New jobs and job security - that’s the bottom line of a major funding announcement this week for Warwick’s biggest employer, the John Dee export beef abattoir. The Federal Government this week allocated $4.97 million in funding for a new ‘Regional Cold Storage’ (RCS) facility, which has an overall cost of $15m and construction of which is due to start in September. Member for Maranoa David Littleproud announced the massive boost at the plant last Monday, describing it as his “biggest win” for the Southern Downs in his first 12 months in the job. The facility will enable the abattoir to streamline product handling, and is expected to create 150 new local jobs, in addition to John Dee’s existing workforce of 630, along with 80 new ‘indirect’ jobs along the John Dee producer supply chain. The new facility will alleviate chilled and frozen beef product handling and storage “bottlenecks” within the plant, allowing processing areas to operate more efficiently and to increase overall production, with a focus remaining on processing of “high value” Wagyu and long-fed Angus cattle for export. “The Darling Downs is well-renowned as having the highest concentration of feedlots in Australia, and is an intensive region for beef cattle production in the country,” Mr Littleproud said.
“This RCS infrastructure is required to overcome a critical bottleneck that exists in the region’s beef supply chain, and will result in further business investment in the region. “This investment is not only a vote of confidence in the Southern Downs community, but also builds diversity to our economic base to build resilience.” John Dee CEO Warren Stiff acknowledged the assistance of the Southern Downs Regional Council in putting together the company’s application for the federal funding. The new cold storage facility will be build on-site adjacent to the existing plant and will be linked by overhead conveyor systems, with new product handling robotics currently being installed in the product packaging area of the abattoir. Southern Downs Mayor Tracy Dobie welcomed the funding announcement. “From council’s point of view, this $15 million project is an enormous boon for our region,” Cr Dobie said. “150 new jobs are expected to come out of this redevelopment, along with the creation of a state-of-the art facility. “Council’s Economic Impact model suggests that the 150 new jobs will generate an additional 187 jobs in the wider economy, which is why projects of this type are important in regional towns like Warwick,“ she said. Too late to stop the bang? By Jeremy Sollars A last-ditch effort by three Southern Downs councillors to overturn a decision to approve an explosives disposal operation at Karara west of Warwick last week was to no avail, the Free Times can reveal. As reported last week, a majority of councillors at their general meeting in Stanthorpe last Wednesday approved a plan by Ipswich-based firm Extech to establish the operation on the Karara property ‘Waraghai’ owned by Donald and Angela McLeish. The proposal is to establish a site to be used for the disposal of explosives, predominantly from the mining industry with blasting carried out six days a month with a maximum of four blasts a day, with a maximum of 1000 kilograms of explosive to be held on site at any given time. The principal opponents of the plan are Belinda Marriage and husband Tim Rudduck, whose neighbouring property ‘Tillari’ is their home and business. Tillari Trotters specialises in free range pork and lamb and other agricultural products. The couple had also been planning a farm-stay for autistic children which is now unlikely to proceed. Late last Friday, Councillor Yve Stocks - who voted against the Extech approval - lodged a ‘rescission motion’ in an attempt to have the approval overturned. The motion was also signed by dissenting councillors Vic Pennisi and Marika McNicol, but the last-minute move was unsuccessful as the council had already notified Extech of the approval, which under the Local Govern-
ment Act of Queensland meant the approval could not be overturned. Mayor Tracy Dobie last Wednesday used her casting vote in favour of the Extech application after a deadlock of councillors. Cr Cameron Gow was absent from the meeting with councillors Sheryl Windle, Yve Stocks, Vic Pennisi and Marika McNichol voting against the application and councillors Neil Meiklejohn, Rod Kelly and deputy mayor Jo McNally in favour. A council spokeswoman confirmed the rescission motion had been lodged last Friday by Cr Stocks but also that Extech had been notified of the approval “in writing” following the council vote. At our request, the council provided the Free Times with a copy of the approval letter to Extech, which is dated last Wednesday 26 July, the day of the council meeting. An Extech spokesman told the Free Times the company received email advice of the approval prior to the filing of Cr Stocks’ rescission motion and hard copy documentation had arrived by mail on Tuesday. Ms Marriage and Mr Rudduck did not lodge a formal objection to the Extech application - which was advertised in the Toowoomba Chronicle - but are adamant that blasting and associated impacts will have a detrimental impact on their farming operations, including stress caused to livestock by blasting. They claim that mapping and GPS co-ordinates in the application are at odds in showing the exact location of the proposed blasting site and that the council’s proposed approval conditions only provide for a one hundred metre buffer zone from any boundary of the
‘Waraghai’ property. They also claim blasting could affect native animal species in the area and that Extech did not carry out an indigenous cultural assessment of the property. Young farming couple devastated Ms Marriage was granted a fiveminute address to the councillors at last week’s meeting, but it was to no avail. She has described the council decision as “a vote against farming and against tourism” and the couple are now fearful for the future of their farming operation. Along with her husband Tim she has been building up Tillari Trotters as a viable agri-business, and this week said she was still in disbelief at the Extech approval. “Councillors are supposed to vote in the best interests of the community - how is this in anyone’s interests?,” she said this week. “We’re just at a loss, but we’re just going to keep fighting. “And not just for us, it’s for future generations. “There were test blasts done just two kilometres from our house. “I’m also concerned about water and rainwater contamination - and we and the councillors still don’t know exactly what materials will be exploded.” The couple have also made it clear they are not against the Extech operation in principle, but have grave concerns about the proximity of blasting to their livestock and home and the volumes of explosives involved at any given time. In a statement, Extech said the company wished “to thank SDRC for their foresight in approving the application,

Tillari Trotters specialises in rarebreed pigs. in particular the work of the council officers involved in the process with Extech is to be commended”. “They conducted their duties in a most diligent and professional manner, totally impartially and thoroughly to ensure that the councillors had all the
facts before them on which to make an informed decision,” the statement said. A petition asking for the approval to be overturned can be found at change.org and by searching ‘Karara’.
Council remains tight-lipped on saleyards lease details The Southern Downs Regional Council has refused to release minutes of closed-door meetings of its Saleyards Advisory Committee to the Free Times following a Right To Information (RTI) application. The Free Times sought to obtain minutes of meetings of the committee held in confidential sessions in March and May and a meeting understood to have been held in late June, following the announcement by the council earlier this year that it would seek Expressions of Interest (EOIs) for the leasing out of the Warwick Saleyards to a private operator. The EOIs closed on Friday 14 July, and the council is yet to release details of the EOIs received and a timeframe in which a decision on the EOIs will be made. As previously reported in the Free Times, the Saleyards Advisory Committee first met in December last year, when it discussed the leasing option, along with the potential demolition of
the Warwick Saleyards and the building of a new $15 million facility nearby. But the only minutes which have been publicly released to date are those of the December meeting, prompting many rural producers and others in the community to question the transparency of discussions relating to the future of the Warwick Saleyards. In our RTI application the Free Times asked the council to release the minutes of the confidential Saleyards Advisory Committee meetings, along with information relating to the current composition of the committee. The only information the council would release were copies of a number of emails from 2016 when the Saleyards Advisory Committee and other similar committees were being formed, with the emails relating to the interest or otherwise of potential members in joining the committee. Names of recipients of the emails were blacked out, with the only other documents released to the Free Times being the committee’s terms of refer-
ence, and the minutes of the original December meeting, both of which are already publicly available on the council’s website. The December meeting was made up of Deputy Mayor Jo McNally, Cr Rod Kelly, Les Fraser of Frasers Livestock Transport, former Saleyards management committee chair Graham Kirkland, Andrew Williams of Elders and David McIvor of McDougall and Sons. It is unknown which of these members remain current due to the later minutes having been suppressed, but the May council general meeting minutes noted that Blake Doro had been invited to join the Saleyards Advisory Committee, which replaced the former saleyards management committee. The minutes of the December meeting revealed that committee member Les Fraser proposed to the committee “the demolition of the current facilities and rebuilding of the site as per the Forbes and Parkes saleyards (in NSW)”. Mr Fraser told the meeting there would be enough business in the area to

May that EOIs would be called for outside management of the Warwick Saleyards has been mixed, with many producers left asking why this option would be explored if the Saleyards turn an annual profit. Many are also concerned that an external private operator could increase selling costs for cattle and sheep, which could drive producers to online livestock sales which are growing in popularity. The Free Times has previously asked the council for details of the Warwick Saleyards annual profit, but these details are yet to be provided. Cr Rod Kelly has previously stated that while the saleyards deliver a return to council, the return needs to be considered in the “broader context of the need to continually upgrade the infrastructure at the facility”. support such a move and that the current saleyards are inadequate to cope with a forecast increase in livestock sales in Warwick. The minutes then detail that council chief executive officer David Keenan asked Mr Fraser about the “proposed location of the new facility”, to which Mr Fraser replied there was “a suitable parcel of land adjacent to Frasers Transport Depot”. It is understood Mr Fraser was referring to the 80-acre former Warwick Enterprise Park on the Old Stanthorpe Road which Frasers Livestock Transport purchased earlier this year for an undisclosed sum from BWC Developments. Mr Fraser told the committee that throughput at a new and bigger saleyards could be 2500 head of cattle and sheep a week, as well as goats, which are a growing domestic and overseas market. Letters
In brief
Not quite right Council dealings with regard to the saleyards are still not quite right - in fact they reek. The same questions that have been raised in various articles and letters to the Free Times over the last six months remain unaddressed. • Why was the saleyard management committee disbanded and replaced by the saleyard advisory committee? • Who was responsible for the choice of committee members? • Why the need for secrecy? • Why the need to change the existing saleyard procedures and most importantly why lease the running of the yards to outside interests? It just looks like business creation at the expense of the ratepayers and producers who use the yards. Blind Freddy can see that if you have two entities seeking to make a profit from a business which previously remunerated only one, then both entities
nial losers, and who have to wait patiently for four years to kick 'em out, and replace them with another unknown crop in which will be mingled more weeds. Jay Nauss, Glen Aplin.

Mamma mia! Senator Canavan’s mother seems to have been as this writer’s mother was. She insisted upon doing as I was told! She was so mean in that I would be honest, truthful, handy at finding the milking cows, bringing them home and she even insisted I milk them! She even had her way that mischief finds things for idle hands to do, so she even had an endless list of cures for idle hands! Water to carry from the creek on wash day, floors to sweep and endless housework to do after the fence was mended, with her giving the orders! Yes Senator Canavan, mothers can be too helpful at times, however this writer blesses mine each and every day for the standards this remarkable orphan instilled throughout my childhood that remain today. Cold comfort It is cold comfort for those who are faced with spiralling property rates to be told that the SDR Council will look at quarterly payments. When we hear from those on council who, during their campaign for a council seat, promised to hold rates to the CPI or even pegging them at a current level for a year or more, but soon backflipped on that; we can only shake our heads in disbelief. As the Free Times was going to press this week the Southern Downs Regional Council issued a statement announcing that the Leslie Centenary Memorial Gate in Leslie Park had been State heritage-listed. The statement said the Queensland Heritage Council has decided at its July meeting to include the gate “as a significant element within the heritage boundary of Leslie Park”. The four sandstone pillars and the iron gates were gifted to the council by the then owner of Glengallan Homestead, Oswald Slade, in 1940 to mark the centenary of the Leslie Brothers settling in the area. All of Leslie Park is included on the Queensland Heritage Register. The Glengallan Homestead Trust had sought the return of the gate to the homestead for its 150th anniversary later this year. A community member lodged an application for the heritage listing in May.
Refloated The pontoon on the Condamine River at Federation Park in Warwick is expected to be back in place by the end of this week. A Southern Downs Regional Council spokeswoman said the pontoon “experienced significant damage during the ex-cyclone event earlier in the year”. “It was recently transported to our workshop for repair as the extent of the damage was too severe to fix on site,” the spokeswoman said.

Nice to read the reasoned and measured communication of George McConville of Swan Creek (Free Times, 6 July) on the rates issue. Wondering where and why his hard-earned money goes? He is not alone, rest assured within the community. I pay annual rates too, for what? My water supply comes with gravity, off my roof, and my power supply comes from that lucky old sun, so what do I pay for? In old medieval and tribal days of villages, precincts and communities, I might understand how the mayoral system developed as a tier of government, but in this day and age of internet and digital communication I wonder if this system is not an archaic, redundant throwback ... like taxation and death, rates seem to be an inevitabilty, inescapable; always inflationary, never pegged. When I was a young man, it seemed that the mayoralty and councillors were an honorary and altruistic role, for the common good of the common man. Now it seems to be a new age or late age career for retirees before dotage. Since the new mayor took office, I read of an incremental rise already to the custodian. This would have made a nice guesture to decline. I rest my case. C. Blakeman, Wyberba.
will either take a massive cut in disbursed profits or they expect to double revenues, either by halving costs or doubling revenue from fees. So council and the CEO seem to be making a very counter-productive economic decision. Foolish indeed to opt to take a 40 per cent cut in revenue just so they can create a business opportunity for the lessee or provide them with a tax dodge. I just don’t get it - does anyone else see this a good business opportunity either for council or the lessee? Name withheld by request.

Farmers are stewing By Jeremy Sollars
The Southern Downs Regional Council’s Invasive Pest Control Scheme is the only one of its kind in Queensland.
African boxthorn. Landowners who fail to comply and who have parcels zoned Agriculture and Farming categories 1, 2 and 3, and Horticulture 1, 2 and 3 will pay a ‘supplementary rate’ of 0.5 cents in the dollar of the rateable value of their holdings, with the minimum fee of $500 applicable. Owners of land zoned Residential 4, Commercial and Industrial (Town and Rural), Extractive and Special Uses will pay 0.3 cents in the dollar, also with a minimum $500 fee. The council has insisted the scheme is essential to controlling the spread of invasive weeds and pest animals, but many in the region’s farming sector have dismissed it as a money-grab. Mr Bartley told the Free Times this week producers felt strongly that the council was taking a “sledgehammer” approach to controlling pests. “We’re expecting a large turnout at the meeting,” Mr Bartley said. “The vast majority of rural producers in this region have been ef-
fectively managing pests on their properties for decades. “Even the genuine farmers who’ve been controlling pests have taken this scheme as an insult. “There’s also a lot of concern about the ability of elderly landowners to carry out what the council is requiring. “There are a lot of questions also around things like does the council have the green waste capacity to deal with pest plants that are delivered after being removed.” Mr Bartley said invitations to the meeting had been sent to mayor Tracy Dobie and all councillors. Council outlines the scheme The council recently advertised two new staffing positions for administration of the Invasive Pest Control Scheme, with the council’s manager of Environmental Services, Tim O’Brien, telling the Free Times last week that “recruitment is underway for these positions”. “The Control Works forms are being issued with the 2017/18 rates notices and completed forms are due back to council by 18 August,” Mr O’Brien said. “Where applicable, a reminder

Heritage listing for gate As the Free Times was going to press this week the Southern Downs Regional Council issued a statement announcing that the Leslie Centenary Memorial Gate in Leslie Park had been State heritage-listed. The Queensland Heritage Council decided at its July meeting to include the gate “as a significant element within the heritage boundary of Leslie Park”.

A large turnout of producers and other interested residents is expected at a public meeting at Freestone Memorial Hall next week to discuss the Southern Downs Regional Council’s Invasive Pest Control Scheme (IPCS) and the plan to potentially lease out the Warwick Saleyards. Meeting facilitator and former Southern Downs deputy mayor Ross Bartley said concern over both issues among those in the rural sector locally is running hot and petitions would be circulated at next Thursday’s meeting, which will be chaired by former mayor Ron Bellingham. Rates notices issued across the region a fortnight ago to landowners with holdings zoned ‘Agriculture and Farming’, ‘Horticulture’, ‘Commercial and Industrial’, ‘Residential 4’ and others show an amount for the pest management charge based on a cents-in-the-dollar land valuation. But the charge is listed as a ‘concession’ and only payable if landowners either fail to meet their obligations under the IPCS to control invasive weeds and animal pests on their properties, or if they fail to submit a ‘Control Works’ form outlining their private pest management strategy by Friday 18 August. If the council deems it payable the charge will be levied as a ‘Supplementary Rates Notice’ “towards the end of the financial year”, according to a council spokesman. The minimum ‘special charge’ is $500 but some landowners have been ‘granted a concession’ on their rates notices in the thousands, depending on the valuation of their properties.
letter will be sent giving ratepayers a further 30 days to submit the forms. “Fines will not be issued in relation to this scheme. “Rather, where Control Works forms are not submitted or are submitted but the control works are not done, then a supplementary rates notice will be issued towards the end of the financial year. “The supplementary rates notice will be to the value of the concession that was applied in the current rates notice. “The minimal special charge is $500. However, if you have a high valued property as per the general rates then this special charge may be higher than the minimal amount based on the rate in the dollar amount per category. “The Invasive Pest Control Scheme (IPCS) special charge is shown on the current rates notice, as well as a corresponding concession for the same amount. “If a ratepayer does not submit a completed Control Works form within the timeframes noted, the concession will be removed and they will be issued with a Supplementary Rates Notice towards the end of the financial year for the IPCS special charge amount - and this amount will either be the minimal special charge or the higher special charge as was indicated on the current rates notice.” The public meeting open to rural producers and other interested landowners from Warwick and Stanthorpe will be held at 11am next Thursday 10 August at the Freestone Memorial Hall on Freestone Road. Inquiries to Ross Bartley on 0429 637 729.

Making a difference for mums Southern Downs mothers and babies have benefitted from the fund-raising efforts of Warwick Rotaract members, who have donated a Medela breast pump to Warwick Hospital. Warwick Rotaract members have been busy manning Bunnings sausage sizzles and the Rotary chip van to raise funds for this much-needed piece of equipment, valued at $2198. Warwick Hospital associate nurse unit manager maternity services Ross Newton said breast pumps were used by Warwick Hospital’s Child Health program to assist with infant feeding. “Warwick Child Health pro-
vides a service to new mothers and babies, offering home visits, new parent programs, immunisations, clinics and infant feeding support,” he said. “As part of infant feeding support, some mothers need urgent short-term assistance with feeding through the use of a breast pump. “Often this occurs when mothers can’t stay with premature babies, or when either the mum or baby becomes unwell. “In these times the use of a breast pump is important to help mothers maintain their breastmilk supply and provide breastmilk to their babies.
“Our existing breast pump was due for replacement and the donation of the new one allows us to continue supporting breastfeeding mothers in the Warwick community. “I would like to thank to Warwick Rotaract Club for their fund-raising efforts resulting in the donation of this valuable piece of equipment.” Warwick Rotaract Club president Jessica Carey said the club was pleased to make the donation. “We would like to thank the Warwick Hospital, particularly Ross Newton, for collaborating on this project,” Ms Carey said.

CALLS for greater transparency on added sugar in packaged foods has received the backing of Australian dentists. Excess sugar in the diet is not only linked to the obesity epidemic, but has been blamed for the increasing rates of dental decay seen in children as young as one. With new analysis revealing seven out of 10 packaged goods sold on supermarket shelves contain added sugar, President of the Australian Dental Association Dr Hugo Sachs says reform is needed to ensure the oral health of young Australians. “Nationally, over 24,000 children aged 14 years or under were admitted to hospital due to dental conditions - these hospitalisations were assessed as being potentially preventable. Over half of six-year-olds have experienced tooth decay in their baby teeth and up to half of 12-year-olds have experienced tooth decay in their permanent teeth,” Dr Sachs said. Researchers at the George Institute for Public Health analysed more than 34,000 packaged foods - about 18,000 discretionary foods and nearly 16,000 core foods like milk, bread and cheese. A significantly higher proportion of discretionary foods contained added sugar compared to core foods - 87 per cent versus 52 per cent. Soft drinks, cakes, pies, ice cream, pastries and processed meats are the worst offenders. The findings, published in the journal Nutrients, have led to calls for manufacturers to declare the amount of added sugar on their packaging and calculated in the Health Star Ratings. “Good sugars are an integral part of a healthy diet, and we need to be able to separate sugars naturally present in dairy, fruits and vegetables from sugars added during
manufacturing,” said the institute’s Professor Bruce Neal. The George Institute research will be submitted to the Federal Government’s current review of the Health Star system. Professor Neal says only labelling total sugar content as opposed to added sugar can be misguiding. This is particularly so, he says, for discretionary products such as muesli bars, sauces and spreads, which contain a lot of added sugar but get a relatively high star ratings in the current system. Earlier this year, a Choice report found that if consumers could identify added sugars on food packs they could avoid 26 teaspoons of sugar each day. With 50 per cent of Australian adults con-
suming more added sugar than they should, there is a clear need for improved labelling, Prof Neal said. “We’d encourage food manufacturers to start labelling added sugars and government to provide the framework,” he said. “Australians would be much better off if they could quickly and easily see how much sugar has been added.” The oral health of Australians would also greatly improve, says Dr Sachs. “The George Institute’s review shows that the Health Star Ratings are effectively hiding the presence of these added sugars in a number of products; meaning that consumers are inadvertently exposing themselves to increased risk of tooth decay,” Dr Sachs said.

Move makes sense for Mr Rental Warwick’s Mr Rental has a new premises and a whole new look and product and service offering. Owner Sarah Littleproud chatted to the Free Times this week about her big and bold decision to move her business from its original digs on Palmerin Street just a few doors down to the former Bryson’s Place, which began life as Warwick’s second Town Hall. Great coffee is still available front-of-house thanks to ‘Babybird’ - a subsidiary of the Bluebird Cafe - while the main part of the premises houses the Mr Rental range and lots more. As well as being able to conveniently rent with the option to buy - the necessities of life such
as TVs, washing machines and other whitegoods, along with fitness gear and other useful items, Sarah offers customers a new and fresh interior styling service to brighten up the home. She has an extensive range of bedding and linen, general home furnishings and homewares, nursery items and artworks and will even come to your own home to work on that much-needed styling makeover. “As far as we know this is the first of its kind in Warwick as far as styling advice and assistance goes,” Sarah told the Free Times. “We can provide that service in-store or in the home, particularly where homeowners are pre-
paring their home for sale. “We can also do research on products and trends for our customers and we have access to customised furniture - if you want something we don’t have here we’ll get it in for you.” Running her own business has been a change of tack for Sarah, who has a background in law and commerce and is a CPA. She originally bought Mr Rental around five years ago as an investment with friends but recently bought out their shares in the business and took it over as a full-time project, along with being mother to her and husband David’s three young boys.
She also has a love of gardening and in the past entertained the idea of buying and running a nursery, but decided on the retail sphere with her interest in Mr Rental. Sarah said ‘The Print Room’ - a popular feature of the former Bryson’s Place - at the rear of her store would be used for in-house functions, such as new product launches. “We just wanted to do something different in the home-styling area - and what’s really important is to encourage people to buy locally,” she said. Pay Sarah and Mr Rental - and Babybird - a visit today at 90 Palmerin Street.
Mr Rental stocks an extensive range of homewares such as bedding and linen - and if they don’t have it they’ll get it in for you.

OPEN, NOT FOR TROUBLE PLEASE OPEN home inspections are designed to give potential buyers an opportunity to try a home out for size but sometimes, unfortunately, they are also an opportunity for thieves. Taking steps to remove that temptation and limit risk as much as possible will give owners peace of mind and, hopefully, ensure their home and family’s possessions are safe while still welcoming potential buyers. A property is not just a person’s biggest asset, it’s also their sanctuary, their escape from the world, so it pays to be vigilant. If a home is on the market and it is open for inspection, here are some top tips to help with security: Deal with an REIQ agent as members are held to industry best practice in all areas; Ensure agents use a sign-in sheet for visitors and keeps accurate records; Keep valuables, such as jewel-

A conflict with someone who’s a lot like you can make for a difficult weekend. Romantic uncertainties vanish and you get the affection you have been seeking. Sports are favoured on the weekend.
with Beatrice Hawkins
GEMINI—May 23-June 21 New money making opportunites open up and it’s possible that you can take on a sideline of sorts. For singles, it’s a marvellous time for meeting serious prospects. CANCER—June 22-July 22 Mingling with a new group of people can make for a stimulating week. There may be financial strain on the weekend - perhaps an unexpected repair bill can lead to a major monetary decision. LEO—July 23-August 22 This is a rapid fire week, as you move from project to project with speed - and success. Goals seem within easy reach at last. Financial details demand the most careful attention. VIRGO—August 23-September 22 This is a great week for proceeding with creative enterprises - but professional tasks require a much more serious and more positive approach. Be sure that you allocate jobs to the right people. LIBRA—September 23-October 22 Accept very little at face value. A casual remark may have a hidden meaning. A bargain too good to be true is just that. The wokplace is on the upswing, now that moody people have cheered up. SCORPIO—October 23-November 21 It is easy to forget names and dates right now, but on the other hand you are remembering some events and people from the very distant past. One of these people may suddenly step into the present. SAGITTARIUS—November 22-December 22 Friends and family may seem a little possessive and social plans may need rearrangement. Exercise is important. If a friend asks you to consider a new sport, look at the advantages. CAPRICORN—December 23-January 20 You could find yourself doing a lot of explaining. It seems that everyone wants to know the whys and wherefores of your actions. Pets are in the picture - perhaps you will be petsitting. AQUARIUS—January 21-February 19 Friendship is the theme of this upbeat week. Someone from the past could turn up. You know that he/she has changed but are not sure if it’s for the better. PISCES—February 20-March 20 There’s a fine opportunity for alert Pisces to make a career advancement. Confide more in relatives - your oldest and wisest ones. Your sense of humour can be too subtle for loved ones. BIRTHDAY THIS WEEK You have a great love for children, home-life, humanity and sometimes you are too sensitive and too worried about security. This is a great time for entering completely new ventures. 12358361-EPJ31-17
Last week the Horticultural Society held an extremely successful Garden Extravaganza in St Mary’s Hall. The number of stalls was exceptional with everything from beautiful pottery to an orchid display to rival many orchid shows. There were wonderful displays of plants from various nurseries, a range of geraniums from a specialist grower, beautiful Clivias, water wise garden beds and gadgets to help support plants and make gardening easier and fertilisers to make the plants flourish. There was the Fairy Garden fairy from Highfields with all her delightful miniature garden ornaments to set up a tiny garden in a very small place or to organise a “fairy party” for a special occasion. The local native plant people were there with all their varieties on display. Annette Russell from Killarney displayed beautiful photos of her spectacular roses and reminded everyone that her garden will be open to the public for all of the month of October. If you haven’t seen Annette’s garden, be sure to put it on the calendar as it is a delight not to be missed. Local laser-cut metal signs were also there to decorate the garden or put a personalised touch to your house.
One of my neighbours has a great truck on his front wall indicating to all the industry in which he is involved. It looks fantastic! The other interesting display was the rusty barbed wire garden ornaments and recycled timber bird houses from our friends in Allora. Shade Plus also had an interesting array of household and garden paraphernalia. Thank you to everyone who came and exhibited, to those who assisted with the catering and to all those who spent some time with a cuppa or soup for lunch. I am glad you enjoyed something different and relaxing during Jumpers and Jazz. If you missed us, add it to your calendar for the last Wednesday and Thursday of Jumpers and Jazz week next year. The native plant people gave me some seeds for the native “Garland Lily” that will go into my garden along with all the other easy care lilytype plants I have there and add to the colour and allow me to have a display
without too much work or worry. The botanical name is “Calostemma purpureum” and is a longlived perennial flowering plant native to South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales. This lily is part of the daffodil, belladonna and nerine family, but is the only recognised Australian native member. It is well known in the Riverina area growing both on rocky ridges and flood plains. Like nerines, it often sends up its flower stem before the strappy leaves. It is an ideal rockery plant as it adds height to many low growing, rambling rockery favourites but takes up little space. There can be as many as six to 18 flowers on each spike - each being about 2cm long on stems 25cm to 50cm high. I can’t wait for mine to grow and flower although I realise it may take a few years for them to acclimatise and do so. There is also a yellow form that is now recognised as a different plant. It looks very much like a small daf-
fodil or a jonquil in the photographs I have seen. It tolerates clay, loam or sandy soils and acidic, alkaline and neutral pH. It will tolerate light frost, is clump forming and is very tolerant of long dry periods, sounds very much like the ideal flower for a Warwick garden to me! In October the Horticultural Society will again be very busy with the 2017 Garden Competition with entries closing on Friday 6 October and judging commencing on Monday 9 October. Entry is free and open to all gardens in the Southern Downs Region. On Wednesday 18 and Thursday 19 October, the Annual Spring Flower Show will be open in St Mary’s Hall. Entries will be taken from 8am to 10am on the Wednesday and judging will commence then. The doors will open to the public from noon. Our Show last year was the largest flower show in Queensland and I hope we will be able to make the same claim this year. So keep working on those gardens and be ready to enter either or both of these fixtures in the 109th year of the Society. Without you we will have no Show. Following these events we will have the floral window displays during Rodeo Week with judging taking place on Friday 27 October. If any school wishes to be involved but obviously does not have a window in the business area to decorate, please contact me on 0488 470 706 and we will do our best to find a business to let you decorate their window. In years past, schools were big participants in this event. Entry forms for these events will be available from Brysons Place at their new location at 66 Palmerin Street, Warwick.

Tours ahead of Ashes The
spin With Casey O’Connor email: wickets-stpe@bigpond.com
Seems like I should not be trying to offload my Ashes tickets just yet amid news that Cricket Australia and the Australian Cricketers Association are drawing closer to a resolution to the ongoing pay dispute. I guess, the fact the past week has seen both parties behind closed doors and at least talking to each other gives us all hope. Makes you shake your head and wonder if that would not have been the most sensible path to follow earlier in the negotiations. I did, of course, use the word sensible, and there does not appear to have been much of that until now. It appears the tour of Bangladesh and subsequent tour to India before the Ashes will now go ahead leaving a whole lot of people very relieved. The pay dispute however might not be the biggest problem for the Aussies in November December when they face the Poms. England has played some outstanding cricket in their recent series against South Africa. The Proteas are smarting after England gave them a hiding. We will have an advantage on our home pitches and in front of a home crowd, but this series is not going to be any cake walk. At least our players should be well rested and hopefully fully fit after their period of unemployment. Doubt, however, that they have been in the Centrelink queue. Let’s hope by this time next week common sense and common ground has prevailed for the good of the game. Can’t wait to get some perspective on the matter from Ian Healy and John Buchanan on the upcoming Wanderers Tour. - Casey BUSINESS END UPSETS It is generally an indication that the NRL season is getting to the really serious stage when you see the bottom two teams in the competition notching up unexpected wins over opponents who have outperformed them all season. Such was the case in Round 21, and it definitely was the undoing of many tipsters. The Knights have been promising their long suffering fans a win for weeks and last week they caused an almighty upset putting the Dragons to the sword. Yes there were some dodgy decisions, but surely the Knights fans deserve that win. Paul 'Mary' McGregor not so enamoured and after letting his feelings be known on refereeing, officialdom and a few other topics finds himself a little lighter in the pocket. The NRL boffins clearly not impressed. The Tigers then upped the ante in the race for the wooden spoon with a comprehensive win over the Titans leaving their supporters asking where that form has been for the past 20 something weeks and tipsters reeling. The Eels were electric against the Broncos last week, and they will only need to repeat a fraction of that performance to notch another win here. Look for a surge from the Eels as the run towards the finals continues. On Friday night, the Dragons will be breathing fire after their loss to Newcastle and should account for the Bunnies. Michael Maguire will be hoping for a far better performance from the Rabbitohs, and he too was not happy with last week’s refereeing. Might be that some in the Bunnies’ board room are not happy with his performance also. Melbourne Storm led by the mercurial Cameron Smith put on a master class against the Sea Eagles last week. Smith played at his very best in game 350 earning another Man of Match award and maybe on his way to the 2017 Dally M Medal. This week Melbourne take on the Cowboys at 1300 Smiles in a Friday night game and welcome back Billy Slater after “that incident”. The Cowboys looked to be cruising against the Raiders last week before losing their way and the game. Coach Green will be looking for more from
The Bullecourt Bounders are inviting all runners to join them in the upcoming Street Orienteering events which kick off this Sunday at Federation Park in Warwick. them against the premiership favourites. Leaning towards the Storm despite being on Cowboys home territory. The Warriors could not match it with the 2016 premiers at Mt Smart last week, and this week travel to Newcastle to try and bring down the Knights Saturday afternoon, and Newcastle at home after a win last weekend - you must give them some chance. Hope they can go back to back. The Queensland Derby sees the Broncos travel down the M1 to CBUS for their clash with the Titans. The Titans didn’t do enough for me last week. They will lift here, but the Broncos need this win and should get the chocolates. Tough game on Sunday at Shark Park as the defending premiers take on the Raiders. The Raiders do not have a bad record against the Sharks at home, and have been a thorn in their side in recent years, but this is the serious end of the season, and I think the Sharks will aim up here. The Sea Eagles were pummelled by the Storm last Sunday. Is it a form slump to be concerned about or was last weekend purely the occasion of Smith’s 350th. Supporters will be hoping for the latter - I think it might be the former and expect they will get another bath this weekend from the Roosters. It is off to Pepper stadium for the final game of the round - the battle of the Clearys. Panthers coach Ivan Cleary busy this week plotting the downfall of his son’s side the Tigers. Should make for an interesting aside to the game. The Tigers looked good against the Titans while the Panthers were not as impressive against the hapless Doggies. With the home ground advantage, I’m sticking with the Panthers and Senior Cleary to out-wit junior Cleary. GETTING SERIOUS IN TANNY Round five of the Tanny Classic was played last Saturday and following an afternoon of great bowls and plenty of good-natured heckling and banter, it is Matty Shepherd who heads into the final round at the top of the leader board. Shepherd who is taking the role at the top of the leader board far too seriously this week was on Saturday’s overall winning team. Levi Rabbitt, Joe Farmer, Matty Shepherd and Pete Gynther proved too good for their opponents on Saturday defeating Deb Islin, Geoff Farmer, Allen Buse and Darren Rabbitt 21-12. Mavis Lawardon Sue Butz and TB had a 15-8 win over Ash Coleman, Di Walsh and Koala and picked up the runners-up prize on Saturday. The team of Don Neale Gazza Penn and Pete Collis had a 17-11 win over Lyn Coleman Thommo and Mick O’Leary. Pete Collis picked up enough points to be trailing by just one point on the Tanny Classic leader board, but hot on his heels is the young gun Levi Rabbitt who is still in with a chance with 15 points. Quinton Coleman Brian Walsh and Grumpy had a 13-7 win in their game against Julie Buse, Don Clouten and Geoff Creighton. It is going to be a big day on Saturday for the final - who knows what Matty Shepherd has in store for his opponents - there is word he is even practising in the dark this week. We do know it is going to be a bid day on Saturday for the final. BOUNDING AROUND WARWICK If you are a runner looking for a new opportunity to keep fit, then why not try street orienteering. The Bullecourt Boulder Bounders are extending an open invitation to all runners to join them in a series of street orienteering events being conducted on the Southern Downs over the coming
weeks. The first event being held at Federation Park in Warwick this Sunday, 6 August Publicity officer for the Bullecourt Boulder Bounders, Liz Bourne, says street orienteering provided an interesting new way to exercise as it combined running with a mental challenge. Ms Bourne said, “It’s like a car rally on foot with only basic navigational skills required “Our series last year proved very popular with keen runners enjoying exercising their brains as well as their body while walkers and family groups also had fun testing their map reading abilities." The event this Sunday will be held in Federation Park near the bridge over the Condamine River which starts from 2.30pm - 3.30pm. Entry fee is $5, and no special gear is required. Compasses will be available and can be borrowed from organisers. Organisers have planned three street courses - three, five and seven kilometres, be an easy course around the park for juniors. Anyone interested in giving street orienteering a try is encouraged to come along. The Bullecourt Bounders will be holding further street events in Killarney on Saturday 12 August and in Leslie Park on 20 August. Anyone looking for further information should contact Liz Bourne on 4683 6374 or visit the website www.oq,asn.au/events-calendar. OPPORTUNITY FOR YOUNG NETBALLER It seems the Southern Downs may be well on the way to producing another top notch netballer. Talented Warwick player Caitlin Skaines was surprised to receive an invitation to join a group of emerging netballers at a four-day camp in Caloundra in September. The Year 9 Assumption College student is believed to have caught the selector's eye at the inter-district finals and the state age championships. Skaines who plays goal defence in the senior netball competition for The Heat will join a group of around 70 players from across Queensland at the camp. At the conclusion of the camp, a state training squad is expected to be named. A future netball star on the rise, perhaps. O’BRIEN AND REEVES WINNING COMBO Stanthorpe golfers Mick O’Brien and Rob Reeves combined nicely on Saturday to claim a win in the 4BBB stableford end of month medley competition sponsored by club president, Stephen Kay. It was a very closely contested event. The pair combined well returning scores of 23 on the front nine and 25 on the back. There score of 48 just two points ahead of runners-up Alan Kerr and Bob Watts. Having recorded 26 points on the outward nine, they were in a strong position, but a one point at the 12th par three was very costly, leaving them with 20 points for the inward nine. Pin shots went to Angelo Maugeri at three, Len Leigh at 12 and Aaron Simmers at 17. Tric Fittock picked up the ladies’ pin at three and Kay Webb had best approach at 17. Wes Smith collected the pro-pins at 5/14 and 9/18 (almost all three for a second time). Mike McAuliffe claimed the other at 1/10. The Birdies Nest at seven went to runner-up, Alan Kerr. In the run down, it was a ball each to all teams with 45 points and better. How quickly the months roll around. This week play will be for the August monthly medal and putting competitions. Sponsor of the round is local business house, Ginos Floorcoverings. Tee off will be from 11.00 am. There is a Time sheet is on the board at the club house and hope-
Blast from the past - your past is never far away as I discovered this week when I was given a copy of this picture - it is taken at the Stanthorpe RSL after a Darts Championship - if there is anyone out there who can enlighten as to the date of the picture, there are a few grey-headed oldies who would love to know. Sadly all too many once-familiar faces in this picture are playing their darts in a better place. Back row, left to right - Billy Moore, Hank Norman, Neil Brown, Barry Brunckhorst, Peter Pryce, Dean Franklin Casey O'Connor, Ray Reeves. Front row - Tim Page, Paul Cosmo, Chris Batten, Les Reeves. fully all players will be back in the warmth of the club house before it gets too cold. RICHARDSON CELEBRATES MILESTONE WITH WIN There were celebrations all round last week at association croquet as Val Richardson celebrated a great milestone - her 80th birthday. The well wishes flowed and a cake (thanks to Margaret Dickenson) was cut and shared. How better for Val to top off the celebrations than with a win on the court. Partnered by Grace Howard, the pair nailed a 17-15 win over Val Shephard and Heather Widderick. The winners played very well (must have been Margaret’s cake) - Grace Howard scoring a break of six in the game. Andrea Denkewitz teamed with Sharyn Roser in a game against Margaret Dickenson. In a close game Dickenson proved too strong winning 18-16. BUSY BEES Inglewood Sporting Shooters Assoc put competition on hold last weekend to hold an important working bee on the Bosniak Road range. It turned out to be a very productive day with members travelling from afar to get stuck in with a bit of fun and a barbecue after the hard work. You know what they say about all work and no play - so this week the club is hosting Single Action and Shotgun competition. Put on your cowboy hat and boots and check it out. TOUGH WINTER CONDITIONS Numbers for gateball were down on Friday and four games were decided with three players per team. In the opening two games, John Draper, Jenny Tunbridge and Andrea Denkewitz played the Red balls against the team of Margaret Dickenson, Sharyn Roser and Grace Howard with White. Game One went the way of the Red Team 12-8 as Denkewitz perfectly executed a good long “bomb" (knocking two balls out at once). Grace Howard hit a nice long shot to prevent Red from gaining an extra turn with a “gate and touch" but it was not enough to prevent them from taking the win. The White Team hit back in game two, scoring a decisive 16-7 win as Sharyn Roser picked up an extra turn for her team with a “gate and touch". Margaret Dickenson was also in good form, hitting some good long shots to spark opposition balls out. Game three was a dour affair with both teams struggling to take control. Red managed some late points to win 12 - 8. In the final game, White hit back to take a 15-9 win. Andrea Denkewitz starred, scoring two agaris. Players are definitely finding conditions difficult at present. Recent heavy frosts have made the court quite slippery. It is hard to control a spark shot, one of the most important shots in the game. Conditions are also making it tough to stop the ball from slipping under the foot. Spring will be a welcome visitor.

Local Sport PURCELL TOO HOT Members and guests of the Wallangarra Golf Club played a single stableford competition last Saturday. Jamie Purcell was in red hot form and for the third consecutive week came out on top. Not too far off was runner-up Nick Hurtz. Tony Murphy claimed the captain stakes. Kevin Williams held the approach shot on the second hole. Junior won the Jnr comp and is improving every week. This week’s round for the July Monthly Medal will be sponsored by the Wallangarra Railway Way great supporters of the club. A reminder that guests and novices are always welcome to join the Wallangarra crew. SULLIVAN A STANDOUT All players at golf croquet looked in good touch last week, however, Bev Sullivan was the standout performer. Scores throughout the day were fairly even, but Sullivan managed a total score of 13 hoops over her two games, one full “first to thirteen” game and one short game. Dianne Wren and Elaine Brown also played well and carded good scores of 11 over their two games. Sharyn Roser included a hoop in one in her 10 hoops for the day. Shirley Page and Justin Liddy both had nine hoops including a hoop in one from Liddy. Results were: Dianne Wren and Shirley Page had a narrow 13-12 win over Justin Liddy and Sharyn Roser. Bev Sullivan (playing two balls) did well to take a 13-10 win over Elaine Brown and Liz Ellway. In later games, Elaine Brown and Justen Liddy partnered to take a 9-7 win over Liz Ellway and Shirley Page. Dianne Wren played two balls in her final game to score an 8-7 win over Bev Sullivan and Sharyn Roser. There were some very close contests and great play from everyone throughout the day. MITCHELL GETS A WIN One of Sunday Sporters stalwarts, Jim Mitchell nailed a win last Sunday edging out another who has been around the sand traps for as long, runner-up Max Hunter. Ian Anderson scored the best gross. The run downs went to Marg Locke and Jamie Mitchell. Mark Lynam grabbed the pin shot on the 12th and also the pro pin. Jim McPherson took the remaining pin shot at 17. John Walsh and Brendon Hill each headed home with a meat tray. Tee off is at the normal time of 8am - 8.30am - plenty of time for that frost to thaw. TRL RESULTS RAISE QUESTIONS The results of round 17 of the TRL have left us with as many questions as answers. Eight sides remain in finals contention in what is emerging as an intriguing competition. Wattles burst into favouritism for the main prize following a very convincing win over Highfields on the weekend.
Roosters players had plenty to crow about after taking out the Patron’s cup on Saturday in a nail biter. Valleys now sit at the top of the table on 26 points after their win over the Cowboys. Dalby and Pittsworth are each on 24 points. Highfields are now in fourth spot on 20 points followed by Wattles (18), Gatton (16) and the Cowboys and Souths two points back on (14). The line-up for the finals which begin on 13 August depend heavily on results in the last fixture round this weekend. The Cowboys will be desperate to finish their season with a win over Highfields at Fr Ranger Oval on Saturday night. It is a must win game for the Cowboys who also need other results to fall their way of they are to make it to the finals. Last week, they took on the competition leaders and although they still have several of their team sidelined with injury, they were bolstered by the return of Dylan Galloway. Three of the under-18 players Mitch Watson, Kai Etherington and Coen Martin-Brown backed up to play in the A Grade side. The Cowboys opened the scoring, but had problems all afternoon containing the Valleys fullback. Mick Bloomfield, Craig Donn and Mitch Watson all scored for the Cowboys while prolific goal kicker Dan Watson added two more conversions to his tally for the season which now sits at 52. Captain Paul Cantwell again led from the front and had a strong game. The final score against the ladder leaders 52-16. In other games, Valleys had a 42-24 win in Reserve Grade and in a tight game defeated the Warwick under-18s, 30-28. The Cowboys only win came from the second division team who had a 42-18 win.
A GRADE: Valleys 52 (Hnaloan Budden 2, Reggie Munn 2, Dylan Chown, Aaron Sillitoe, Liam Capewell, Emmanuel Cerei, Luke Menhinnitt, Johnson Viane tries Emmanuel Cerei 6 goals) defeated Warwick 16 (Michael Bloomfield. Craig Donn, Mitch Watson tries Dan Watson 2 goals) WATTLES PLAY THEMSELVES INTO THE MIX Wattles enhanced their 2017 premiership credentials with what many saw as an upset win over Highfields last week. Playing on Highfields home turf, Wattles set up their win with a blistering first half. The Warriors came with their game day faces on and scored six answered tries as Highfields struggled to get into the game. It was arguably their best half of footy this season. Matt Duggan was once again instrumental in the win, setting up his back line to score almost at will in the first half as his side went to the break with the score at 30-0. Fullback Jackson Green proved a handful for the Eagles and scored a sensational solo try just before half time, earning himself the Toowoomba Sports Club Player of the Day award. Ryan Duggan who tracked Brother Matt all game scored a double and was named the Hutchies Player of the Round. Highfields had no answers making uncharacteristic and fundamental mistakes as they were dominated by the Warriors. They did hit back with tries in the second half, but the horse had well and truly bolted and they were well beaten. The final score 46-18 Wattles have played themselves into premiership contention in recent weeks, and on Saturday finish their season with a home game against the front-runners Valleys. Valleys are the only team Wattles have not beaten this season and this is sure to be a great game. In other games, Highfields won both under18s (60-12) and Reserve Grade (44-10). A GRADE: Wattles 46 (Ryan Duggan 2, Josh Henry 2, Matt Duggan, Jackson Green, Braydon Wilson, Brendan Wilson tries Matt Duggan 7 goals) defeated Highfields 18 (Wayne Weribone 2, Cooper Bowyer, Aaron Hooper tries Jarred Lee goal) EXCITING FINISH TO PATRON’S CUP On Saturday, the Stanthorpe Gremlins hosted the second of the double header games this season and it was certainly an action-packed afternoon. The Inglewood Roosters defended the Patron’s Cup in a gutsy effort that saw them score in the dying seconds of the opening game against Tenterfield. The Tenterfield Tigers raced away to an early 24-nil lead, but poor discipline allowed the Roosters back into the game and the Tigers paid a heavy price. The Tigers lead narrowed to 24-18 at half time after a raft of silly penalties and loss of possession due to turnovers. Inglewood took full advantage of some sloppy Tigers defence and after the half time break ex-
tended their lead to 40-24 before a late surge from the Tigers got them back into the game. The game looked to be going to extra time, with the scores locked up at 40-all and just a minute on the time clock, but Inglewood seized an opportunity and ran the ball the length of the field as Shane Hooper set up Brent Hearne to score on full time. The final score after the successful conversion 46-40. The converted try handed the Roosters backto-back victories in the Patron’s Cup once again denying Tenterfield as they did last season. It is the third year the Tigers have played in the Patron’s Cup only to come up empty-handed on each occasion. With the Roosters claiming the all-important two points, they now move one point clear on the BRL leader board. It was a costly loss for the Tigers who are now only a remote chance of claiming the minor premiership and a home grand-final. Inglewood would need to be beaten by either Killarney or Stanthorpe and the Tigers win both of their final fixture games. If the Roosters secure the Minor premiership, the best the Tigers can hope for is a home semifinal. It makes their clash with Killarney at Charlie Andrew this weekend in round three of the double headers an all-important game. Captain coach Brendan Minns will be looking for a more disciplined performance from his players when they take on the Cutters who are sure to be strong at home. The Cutters will be bolstered by their performance in game two of the double header last weekend where they toughed out a gutsy win over the Gremlins. Final score 26-12. Playing with only 12 players, the side pulled together and really put in for each other. It was one of Killarney’s best performances this season making good metres up the centre of the park. Hamish Hoffman was named the Cutters Players Player. Another who really stood up in the game was fullback Matt Cole. In an important home game this weekend, the Cutters are expected to be at full strength for their clash with the Tigers while the Gremlins look to have a tough job ahead of them against the Roosters. But as we saw last weekend anything can happen in a game of rugby league.
