One with homeless By Wendy Williamson
Cr Tim Heenan, Fr Bob McGuire, Neal Taylor and Lisa who donated a sleeping mat for Cr Heenan's sleep-out. 171413. He got out his cardboard box last Friday, and will sleep in it every night until Sunday. “I estimate I have clocked up around 900 hours sleeping rough - and I am luckier than most, with a cardboard box and even a couple of blankets,” said the brave councillor. This year he will have the luxury of a sleeping mat, thanks to the creativity and generosity of a local woman, Lisa, who made the mat from recycled plastic garbage bags.

Cr Heenan said he was passionate about increasing awareness of homelessness. Homelessness, he said, came in many forms, with a disturbingly large number of people now sleeping in cars. “We know there are lots of people sleeping in cars in the Yarra Ranges. This is a huge shire, covering two and a half thousand square kilometres, so it is easy for the homeless to be invisible, but they are there,” he said. If you would like to show your soli-

rough on Saturday. His contribution pales in comparison to fellow councillor Tim Heenan, who has racked up more than 130 nights of sleeping in a cardboard box. Cr Heenan began sleeping out during Homeless Week in 2008 to raise awareness of the problem of homelessness. This is the tenth year in which he has withstood the winter freeze for nights on end to show his solidarity with those who are less fortunate.

The celebrated Father Bob McGuire was guest speaker at the launch of Homelessness Week at Lilydale on Monday 7 August. The much-loved priest was as entertaining as ever, but the message he had was a sober one - that much more needs to be done to ensure no person is without a home. He pointed out that there are many reasons which lead people to become homeless, and that while federal and state governments could be doing more, “the best natural resource is the community”. “We can’t have community without the five ‘Cs’,” he added, naming these as care, concern, compassion, communication and above all, common sense. He congratulated the Lilydale and wider Yarra Ranges community on taking steps to address homelessness. Monday’s launch at the Lillydale Lake Community Room was organised by Holy Fools and Anchor, two of the agencies which support homeless and at-risk people in the Yarra Ranges. Jay Church from Anchor said that her organisation found that early intervention and prevention were the most effective ways to deal with homelessness. “Homelessness is all around us,” said Neal Taylor from Holy Fools. “We are here today to put a visible face on it, and to recognise that these are human beings who are homeless.” He said he would like to see a foundation made up of agencies working together, with the support of community funding, to create housing solutions. The immediate need, he said, was for a drop-in centre or day refuge in the Lilydale area - somewhere where people would feel safe, where they could relax with couches and TV, free tea and coffee and computers to enable job searches. The Yarra Ranges Homeless Winter Sleepout at Lilydale’s Melba Park aims to raise awareness of the need for such a centre. On Saturday 12 August from 6pm members of the public are invited to come along and get a brief taste of homelessness by sleeping out in the open. Yarra Ranges Mayor Noel Cliff will be among hardy volunteers sleeping

It is the first time the program has been held in Yarra Ranges and Mr Harvey said the range of abilities was impressive and the enthusiasm and excitement for the opportunities being
made available to the young players was wonderful. Students from other areas also take part in the program, providing an additional opportunity for the musicians to meet peers outside their usual network. “To have such an enthusiastic and talented group in our first year in Healesville is exciting, and it means next year it will grow, he said. “Once the word gets out and the

Hands help out on the railway Work on the Yarra Valley Regional Tourist Precinct and Rail Link Project continues and in recent weeks a milestone was achieved by the Yarra Valley Railway, with all bridges now complete in the section between Yarra Glen and Tarrawarra Estate. The last bridge to be completed in recent weeks was bridge 17 at Simpsons Lane, Yarra Glen where it was turned into a concrete culvert to provide unrestricted car access to Zonzo’s Estate under the railway. Retaining wall platforms have also been completed at Yarra Glen and Tarrawarra and the large majority of the work has been accomplished due to help from community volunteers. Over the past 12 months the Yarra Valley Railway has completed 60,000 volunteer hours, with over 500 volunteers from 10 different community groups being involved. Sara Pheasant said the organisation was fortunate to have generous supporters which made the program possible. She included in her thanks local Bendigo Bank representatives attending the concert, and Yarra Ranges Council for their contribution to the Healesville program. As part of their continuing commitment to engage young people in classical music Yarra Ranges Council offers free admission to under 26-year-olds to all Classical Tracks events under the ‘A Minor Tix’ deal.
The Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol has concluded Operation Crusty, which was run throughout the Yarra Ranges from 6 July to 1 August. Targeting unlicensed and drug impaired drivers, the operation detected 137 individuals committing 179 offences. Of those detected, police found 15 counts of driving under the influence of drugs, 28 unlicensed or suspended drivers, 73 speeding motorists, 27 unregistered motor vehicles and seven vehicles deemed unsafe or defective. Police also impounded six vehicles and breath-tested 627 motorists. Although the operation has finished, members of the Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol will continue to target drug-affected and unlicensed drivers.

Drink driving charges A Yarra Ranges woman who blew .11 at Mount Evelyn after a night at the pokies will take her chances on drink-driving charges at Ringwood Magistrates Court. Young music students from across the Yarra Ranges have performed with musicians from Orchestra Victoria in a spectacular symphony concert in Healesville. The students from Year 7 to Year 12 took part in a two-day student workshop in the lead-up to a full orchestral concert on Thursday night, 3 August, as part of Orchestra Victoria’s ‘On the mOVe! Healesville’ education program. The audience was treated to a brilliant and energetic performance with pieces from Strauss, Handel and Haydn to Russian Folk Songs by Liadov, the James Bond Medley by Lopez and The Can-Can by Offenbach. On the mOVe is a regional program that gives students the chance to learn from world-class musicians in their home communities and to play with a full orchestra, an opportunity aspiring musicians in rural areas may not otherwise have. With financial support, including Bendigo Bank as principal regional partner, the program is fully subsidised making it financially accessible. The program itself is intense, rewarding, and judging from the smiles on the faces of the young musicians as they took their final bows, fun! “Putting up a concert in less than 36 hours from a starting point of never having played together before, and to an expectation of delivering a professional concert, it’s just incredible how

Fischer speaks for vets at Warburton By Kath Gannaway Vietnam veteran Tim Fischer AC will be guest speaker at the 2017 Vietnam Veterans Day commemoration at Warburton on Sunday, 13 August. Mr Fischer’s military service came ahead of a highprofile political career in which he rose to leader of the National Party, Deputy Prime Minister in the Howard Government and, on retirement from parliament, Australian Ambassador to the Vatican. Called up in 1966, Mr Fischer served as a platoon commander and transport officer with the 1st Battalion Royal Australian Regiment before seeing active duty in South Vietnam in 1968-'69. Some 20 years later he served as Shadow Minister for Veterans’ Affairs. In conjunction with the Yarra Valley Vietnam Veterans Association, the Yarra Valley community of RSL sub-branches have been sharing the hosting of their annual day of commemoration since 2004. Veterans from Yarra Glen, Healesville, Warburton, Upper Yarra, Mt Evelyn, Marysville, Croydon and Lilydale will be taking part this year. Warburton RSL president Lindsay Fisher said the War-
burton RSL and the YVVVA were pleased to have two excellent speakers in Tim Fischer and Casey MP and Federal Speaker of the House Tony Smith. He said the march got bigger each year, reflecting a changing attitude in terms of recognition of the role played, the sacrifice made and the ongoing legacy endured by Australia’s 60,000 Australian servicemen and women in Vietnam. The march will assemble at 10.10am at the Warburton football ground and head off at 10.40am, led by the Rats of Tobruk Pipe and Drum Band, through the town to the cenotaph for the service at 11am. There will be refreshments in the Mechanics Institute Hall for those taking part in the march and the YVVVA will run a free sausage sizzle for other community members. The Outer Eastern Melbourne Vietnam Veterans Association is hosting an afternoon of music featuring the Yarra River Band at the Alpine Retreat Hotel from 2pm to 5pm. Contact Lindsay Fisher on 5966 5118 or Dennis Reeves on 5966 2667 for more information.

Ladies lunch with a straight-shooter By Effie Caloutas Ladies from the Yarra Ranges flocked to Woori Yallock to see Melbourne Vixens Goal Shooter Mwai Kumwenda talk at the Ladies Lunch on Saturday 29 July. Kumwenda spoke in front of 70 ladies about the challenges she faced in Malawi. Woori Yallock Coach Sarah Hogan who organised the guest speaker and played alongside Kumwenda at the Peninsula Waves in 2013, said it was a pleasure to have the Melbourne Vixens Goal Shooter talk to netballers from the Yarra Ranges. “It was a really nice day for the girls to see what someone like Mwai has been through.” “She had some really good advice to give to regional netballers about staying true to your own roots and to keep working hard to achieve your dreams.“ The Melbourne Vixens spearhead was also pleased by the reception she received at the ladies lunch. “It was really good,” she said. “The people were so nice. I was impressed.” The star Goal Shooter has scored 518 goals for the Melbourne Vixens, with some of her career highlights including ‘Player of the Tournament’ at the 2015 Netball World Cup in Sydney. With a passion for netball since the age of 11 after watching her friends play the sport, the talented netballer was scouted at the age of

2011, the Malawi Queens spearhead was recruited by the Melbourne Vixens at the end of the 2016 season following a standout performance for the national side at the Fast5 World Series and playing for the Mainland Tactix in the ANZ Championships for three years. “Our family has struggled in Malawi.” With a contract at the Melbourne Vixens helping her support her family in Malawi, Kumwenda now wants to continue to work hard at the Melbourne Vixens in hope of the side winning the cup next season. “My ultimate goal is to continue to work hard and for the Melbourne Vixens to win the cup which will be the ultimate dream for me.”
Healesville open space up for sale By Kath Gannaway The open space colloquially known as ‘Healesville Green’ is up for sale and Yarra Ranges Council wants residents to have a say on whether council should buy it. The land, at 13 Green Street and adjacent to the River Street car park, is owned by VicTrack and in recent years has been the subject of a planning scheme amendment with plans for commercial development and an impassioned community campaign to keep it as open space. The land is currently leased to council and used by the Healesville Community Market once a month. VicTrack is pursuing the sale of the land and has offered council and other government agencies the opportunity to express an interest in purchasing the land. Should council not purchase the land, it is expected that VicTrack will seek to have the land re-zoned for commercial purposes and sold on the open market for potential development. The 1716 square metre land parcel has been indicatively valued at $400,000. However, the final sale price will be determined by the Victorian Government Valuer-General. Ryrie Ward Councillor, Fiona McAllister encouraged Healesville residents to provide their feedback on the potential land purchase through the ‘Have Your Say’ section of council’s website. “This part of town has been used by the Healesville Community Market and other community groups for 30 years,” Cr McAllister said. “If the land is purchased by council, it could be rezoned for recreational purposes. If it is sold, it could be developed for commercial purposes by its owner. “Now is the time for residents to have their say about what they would like to see happen to this area of Healesville.” For more information, visit yarraranges.vic. gov.au/haveyoursay, write to Planning Services at Yarra Ranges Council, or deliver to your local Community Link. The online feedback form will be open until 5pm on Tuesday, 29 August.

Last word on hills wines By Derek Schlennstedt When it comes to choosing a wine to accompany your meal, there’s only one book that can help decipher the riddle, and with over 700 pages of various wines and their respective flavours, James Halliday’s Wine Companion has become a wine bible. His most recent book the 2018 Halliday Wine Companion was released on 2 August at the Halliday Wine Companion Awards where once again the Yarra Valley shone. The Valley led Australia’s winemaking regions at the fifth annual Qantas epiQure Halliday Wine Companion Awards, and pre-eminent wine critic James Halliday crowned singlevineyard estate Mount Mary as Winery of the Year. Yarra Yering in Gruyere received the best dry red award for their Dry Red No. 1. Third-generation winemaker Sam Middleton said he was making sure Mount Mary “shines brighter than that of any of the 174 wineries in the Yarra Valley” and he took advantage of a superlative 2015 vintage to secure scores of 97 and above for all four wines in the classic portfolio. Meanwhile, Best New Winery was presented to Shaun Crinion of Dappled Winery who submitted wines for review in the Halliday Wine Companion for the first time, despite several years of working in the region. Dark Horse of the Year was awarded to little-known producer Boat O’Craigo, run by the Graham family with influential winemaker Rob Dolan behind the wines. All the awards were based upon the reviews in the 2018 Halliday Wine Companion book, which feature more than 1200 wineries and around 6840 individual wine ratings.
In his inimitable style, Halliday shares his extensive knowledge of wine through detailed tasting notes with points, price, value symbol and advice Picture: DEREK SCHLENNSTEDT on best-by drinking, as well as each wine’s closure and alcohol content. 171295 Mr Halliday said that his 12th edition of the book included by far his most in-depth reviews, and said that Yarra Valley wines were some of the best in the country and he expected
them to improve over the next few years. “I am really proud of this edition, my 12th, and love that Australia is returning to produce the classic varieties
of chardonnay and shiraz, with pinot noir the rising star.” “The Yarra Valley is only about making very good to great wine; it’s far too difficult here to make ordinary

Warburton post office is one of over 120 post offices to have received a digital upgrade as Australia Post rolls out a new set of identity services across Victoria. More than half of all post offices across the state are now ‘one stop shops’ for digital identity services such as tax file number applications, identity photos, land title ID checks, working with children checks and more. Overseeing the roll-out is Roger Revere, State manager for Victoria, who said many were delighted to see more Victorian customers with access to these services. “Previously, all of these applications had to be done in
hard copy,” Mr Revere said. “For example, customers would have to bring their own photos with them or arrange a separate appointment to have their pictures taken. “This meant longer processing times for some customers and it was less convenient. “We think that local Upper Yarra residents will be really pleased at how quickly and securely they can get things done with this digital upgrade.” For more information on identity services available at your local post office, visit www.auspost.com.au or call 13 POST.

Giraffe with a message By Derek Schlennstedt
Losing out in pokies fight By Peter Douglas
Much to the delight of students, Harold the giraffe visited Woori Yallock Primary School to teach them about healthy Picture: DEREK SCHLENNSTEDT living. 171393 them a story about Harold living under the van somewhere and then she brings out Harold, and the kids get to talk to Harold,” Mr Thockloth said. “They hadn’t seen the big Harold before and I did have a student that said to me that Harold had really grown.” The learning programs cover everything from healthy living, to drugs and even cyber bullying. In May funding was cut from
the Life Education program by the Federal Government, however it was reinstated following strong social media backlash. Mr Thockloth said they had already booked Harold for next year and hoped funding would continue into the future. “I hope the funding continues because it’s a great program and the engagement for the kids is fantastic.” “We’ve already booked for next year.”
Poker machine gamblers in the Yarra Ranges are among the ‘biggest losers’ in the state, with more than $28 million lost on the pokies in the region over the past financial year. This equates to around $77,000 lost each day within the local government area (LGA). Despite relatively few venues in the region, with just nine, the region shows an appetite for gambling that is on par with similar-size regional shires within Victoria, such as East Gippsland ($23 million), Mildura ($25 million) and Shepparton ($31 million). The recent statistics, released by the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation, point towards gamblers gravitating towards Lilydale when wanting to play the pokies. For the Yarra Ranges LGA, 61.4 per cent of losses were recorded from Lilydale venues, with the suburb also possessing the top three venues in terms of money lost on poker machines. In terms of highest to lowest lost on pokies, the venues were the Crown Hotel, York on Lilydale and The International. The statistics also showed there were no signs of gamblers slowing down, either, with the region bucking a state-wide

However, the $28 million dropped into Yarra Ranges poker machines pales in comparison to neighbouring City of Casey, which recorded $127,093,819. This figure was second in the state, trailing only Brimbank Shire ($134,141,671.85). Meanwhile, Cardinia ($27,045,323.57), Knox ($75,061,924.49) and Maroondah ($65,114,897.86) all recorded similar levels to the previous financial year.

Life Education mascot Harold the giraffe visited Woori Yallock on 4 August, to the many screams of adoring students and teachers. Woori Yallock Primary School also held a pyjama party where students attended in their pyjamas and Harold joined them for breakfast - the most important meal of the day. Also appearing for the first time at Woori Yallock primary was fully grown Harold, who hugged and shared the love with kids. Oliver Thockloth, principal at Woori Yallock Primary, said the program had been an enduring part of the school and each year they invited the friendly giraffe back, due to the learning programs they offered and the joy Harold brought to the children. “We promote it every year by having a special breakfast that Harold attends - kids come in their pyjamas, teacher cooks them breaky, and while they’re eating their breaky Harold comes and visits,” he said. Life Education is the largest, independent, Australian, health and drug education provider for school children aged 5-13 years and their most famous representative to spread the message is Harold the giraffe, who has been doing it for over 37 years. The Life Education van usually features a puppet called Harold the giraffe however this time students were able to see Harold as they’d never seen him before, standing upright and over seven feet tall. “When they’re in the life-ed van, the lady that runs it tells

Ms Williams thanked Yarra Ranges Council for their support, along with the many community groups, businesses and individuals who gave their support. “It’s a festival that is still developing, and each year we try to do something a bit different to reach different groups. “This year the focus was on the parade, and it was beautiful,” she said.

Light projections, magical costumes and hundreds of lanterns threw a mantle of light over Yarra Glen as part of the annual Festival of Light on Saturday, 5 August. More than 1200 people came out in the face of warnings of extreme weather, and were rewarded with the spectacle of a ribbon of lantern light trailing from Anzac Avenue to the main street and light
projections that turned the historic little white church into a gallery of colour. Warburton Makers Group led the parade with illuminated costumes depicting the seasons, and there were performances on the main stage. Organiser Beth Williams said the festival was about getting communities and families together in winter to have a celebration.
The Yarra Glen "I Want To Sing" Choir made music in the street. 171416

Do kids need fillings? 48% of Australian children get cavities before the age of 5! Your child should have their first check-up at age 1. Inspiro provide free dental for children under the age of 12. Does the dentist only look at teeth? Dentists look for oral cancer, plaque, tartar and cavities, problems that are under the surface, gum infection and gingivitis. How often should I go to the dentist? People with good healthy teeth and gums can usually see their dentist once or twice a year. People with a high risk of dental disease should visit every 4-6 months. Your teeth should be cleaned at the dentist every 6 months. Can I go to the dentist when I have a cold or cold sores? Yes you can. But if the cold/cold sores are particularly bad we recommend waiting until your symptoms subside. Are dentist’s doctors? The movies and TV often poke fun at dentists, joking that they are not actual ‘doctors.’ Contrary to Hollywood, dentists are doctors, just not doctors of medicine. Who is Inspiro? Inspiro has dentists located at Lilydale and Tecoma and clinics opening soon at Healesville and Belgrave. Our dental team provide levels of client care that are above the state average. Call out for performers By Kath Gannaway It’s been a long, cold winter and the antidote could very well be music and laughter. A free community-building event Soul, Song, Speak, Soup Community Concert, will be held at the Millwarra Community Building in Millgrove, and the call is going out for performers to be part of the program. Organiser Melissa Gunner said the concert on Saturday, 2 September is an opportunity for the community to come together. “We can warm up our souls with songs, writings and music that encourage hope, passion, laughter and community,” Ms Gunner said. Seasoned performers, writers, musicians, creative people and novices trying something new, are all invited to participate in the concert. “We would like as many proposals and people as possible and encourage a diversity of performance styles and material,” Ms Gunner said. She said the performances must be in the spirit of community connection. All songs, music and other written material must be submitted by Sunday, 12 August. Organisers need to know of any special needs or requirements, such as the number of microphones, well in advance to allow the best arrangement of the program. A sound check will be done on the day, and some rehearsal leading up to the concert may be required. For more information, phone Ms Gunner on 0499 863 028.

It’s Ape-pocalypse Now War For The Planet Of The Apes (M) Starring: Andy Serkis, Woody Harrelson By Seth Hynes War For The Planet Of The Apes is a phenomenal conclusion to the rebooted Planet of the Apes franchise. In an apocalyptic future, Caesar (Andy Serkis), the chimpanzee leader of a society of super-intelligent apes, must protect his community from a new adversary: the zealous Colonel (Woody Harrelson). War For The Planet Of The Apes upholds the reboot trilogy’s standard of impeccable plot, tone and
character writing. Driving themes of obsession, hubris and responsibility, every major character has a complex, engaging personality and compelling layers of moral greyness. Caesar finds himself consumed by hate and lust for vengeance, and the sadistic Colonel is given a sympathetic backstory defined by crushing personal loss. The pacing is flawless, with clear objectives and welldefined conflicts. Featuring deliberate nods to Apocalypse Now, War For The Planet Of The Apes has a gripping, intensely grim atmosphere, but balances the oppressive tone with tender character relation-

Doing it for the vets By Kath Gannaway One of the region’s best-loved bands, Yarra River Band, will be at the Alpine Retreat Hotel in Warburton for a Vietnam Veterans Day Commemoration gig on Sunday, 13 August. The band, led by John Seegers, has been together for eight years and played at venues throughout the Yarra Valley and beyond. Joining John, who is the master of guitar and vocals, are Janet Sagebrecht, vocals, Gabe Buller, drums and vocals, Noel ‘Smokey’ Buller, bass and vocals, Daniel Peluso, lead guitar and vocals and Tino Pegoraro on keyboard. “We are honoured to be invited to play for the Outer Eastern Melbourne Vietnam Veterans Association Commemoration,” John said. He also previewed two special aspects of the day with bagpipe players accompanying one of their most popular covers, AC/ DC’s ‘Long Way to the Top’, and an original song penned by Smokey about the Yarra River that gives the band its name, called ‘The River’s Rising’. The band will play from 2pm to 5pm, following the Vietnam Veterans Day march and service hosted by Warburton RSL. For more information phone 0421 658 711.
OUTER EASTERN MELBOURNE
ships and moments of humour, the latter provided mainly by Bad Ape (Steve Zahn), a wily chimp hermit living in the mountains. It’s remarkable how this trilogy has created such charismatic, deeply relatable non-human characters. This is achieved both through unparalleled CGI and poignant, moving motion-captured performances, with Serkis making the best case yet for motion-captured performances to be finally recognised for acting awards. War For The Planet Of The Apes ends the trilogy on a triumphant note and is one of the best films of the year so far.

Wandin perched on top By Cameron Hutchison With three rounds to go in Division 1, Wandin have snuck in to first spot but only by half a game, while Healesville and Woori Yallock share second spot with Olinda just behind in fourth, by two points. Upwey makes up the five on 38 points, and are probably safe from sixth-placed Mount Evelyn, though there’s still a lot of room for movement within the top five. With two rounds to go in Division 2, Belgrave are one win clear on top from Seville, while Yarra Glen holds onto third spot with 44 points but have Alexandra and Powelltown just behind them on 40. The finals race is over for Kinglake. First and second are safe, but it can still be shaped as to who will be minor premiers. Division 1 Seniors Football Upwey Tecoma 15.18(108) d Gembrook Cockatoo 10.7(67) Upwey Tecoma has secured a finals berth with a big win over Gembrook. Gembrook got the jump kicking 5.3 to 3.6 in the first quarter and had a handy lead of nine points at quarter-time. Upwey got back in the game in the second term with five goals to two and took back the lead by 13 points at half-time. Gembrook had gone back into their shell in the third quarter and did not bother the scorers, while Upwey kicked away with another two goals. Gembrook managed to boot another three goals in the final term, but Upwey added to theirs with another five and ended up winners at the final siren. Upwey-Tecoma Best: J. Hackett, D. Waters, R. Van Hoorn, H. Stanley, K. Grenda, I. Krijt. Gembrook-Cockatoo Best: D. Welsh, S. Gramc, R. Causer, L. Henzen, B. Wareham, J. Kruithof Woori Yallock 9.7(61) d Healesville 7.8(50) Woori Yallock has dropped Healesville from the top perch after a low scoring affair on Saturday, meaning they now share second spot on the ladder. Woori Yallock stunned Healesville in the first term keeping them scoreless but kicked 4.2 themselves and a lead of 26 points was theirs at quarter-time. Healesville bounced back in the second quarter, kicking two goals and kept Woori Yallock to just one behind, but the lead was still nine points at half-time. Woori Yallock made the most of the conditions in the third term and put on another four goals to Healesville’s one and the lead had blown out to 24 points at the last break. Healesville outscored Woori Yallock in the last, but they left their run too late and it was Woori Yallock who saluted the judge at the final siren. Woori Yallock Best: L. Boontjes, K. Thompson, H. Smith, M. Wright, M. Baxter, S. Ismail Healesville Best: D. Anderson, D. Plozza, C. Adams, N. Aldridge, T. Costigan, B. Murphy Warburton-Millgrove 15.10(100) d Mount Evelyn 8.10(58) Warburton has notched up their second win for the season, and at the expense of Mount Evelyn who are now out of the finals race. Warburton got the early lead and by kicking four goals to two in the first quarter and Mount Evelyn were left shell-shocked. They kicked away in the second term, kicking four goals to two and had a lead of 25 points at half-time. The third quarter was their best for the season when they piled on six goals to three in the third term and the lead was 42 points. The game was there to be lost for Warburton, but they stood strong and both sides only kicked one goal but Warburton celebrated at the final siren. Warburton-Millgrove Best: T. Walker, L. Barnard, T. Marr, S. Andueza, J. Lee, B. Clinch Mount Evelyn Best: J. Barden, S. Martin, J. Beamish, M. Brierley, M. Gibbons, D. Maunder Olinda Ferny Creek 21.12(138) d Monbulk 7.6(48) Olinda is only half a game out of third position, and one game off top spot after a big 90-point win over Monbulk on Saturday. The first quarter was tight and all tied up at 3.2. Olinda got
their kicking boots on in the second term with a five-goal quarter while Monbulk could only manage one behind. They really impressed in the third quarter with a big eight goals-to-one quarter and the lead was 76 points. They did not let up in the last and put on another five goals to three to secure themselves in the five and finding some form with three weeks to go. Olinda Ferny Creek Best: C. Brown, B. Cooling, J. Charge, N. Keegan, J. Rankin, N. Broomhall Monbulk Best: A. Smith, C. Griffiths, S. Williams, D. White, P. Barge, N. Sargent Wandin 10.13(73) d Emerald 9.10(64) Wandin has jumped back on top of the ladder after a hard-fought win over Emerald on Saturday. Wandin held onto a slim four-point lead at quarter time. Wandin extended that lead to just 10 points at half-time and it was game on. The third quarter was tight with both sides kicking four goals, but the lead had increased to 12 points. Emerald outscored Wandin in the last, kicking 2.4 to 2.1 and wasted opportunities in front of goal which gave Wandin the win by nine points. Wandin Best: R. Ross, M. Polkinghorne, H. Byrne, J. Del Giudice, J. Glenn, J. McInnes Emerald Best: J. Pedder, L. Sheppard, D. Karacsonyi, J. Thomas, P. White, C. Thomsen Division 2 Seniors Football Belgrave 16.11(107) d Powelltown 15.15(105) Powelltown has dropped to fifth on the ladder after a nail-biting loss by only two points to Belgrave on Saturday. Belgrave completely outplayed Powelltown in the first term, kicking a whopping 8.5 to one behind and a lead of 51 points at quarter-time. Powelltown staged a miraculous turnaround in the second quarter, with 8.4 to 2.5 and the lead was now only 16 points at the main break. They continued that form into the third term, outscoring Belgrave in a tight 30 minutes of football, kicking 3.6 to two goals and at the final change Belgrave's lead was reduced to four points. The lead see-sawed in the last, and Powelltown had the lead on several occasions, including at the final siren. It took B. Raaymakers stepping up for Belgrave with a mark on the siren and converting after it to steal the win on a momentous occasion. Belgrave Best: J. Brown, Y. Curtis, M. Sproules, T. Tubley, T. Marks Powelltown Best: G. Newing, M. Pote, N. Moody, W. Dore, J. Moore Seville 18.12(120) d Kinglake 7.9(51) Seville has effectively put Kinglake out of the finals race with a big win on Saturday. Seville got the early jump on Kinglake, kicking 3.6 to two behinds in the first term. The second quarter was even with both sides kicking three goals, but the lead was 20 points at half-time. Seville kicked away in the third term with an eight-goal quarter, Kinglake kicked two and the lead was now 55 points and out of Kinglake’s reach. Seville kicked another 4.4 to 2.2 and has secured themselves second spot on the ladder. Seville Best: J. Young, M. Cecere, C. Suban, D. Groen, L. Casini, K. Mullett Kinglake Best: M. McAllister, A. Whelan, J. Butterworth, J. Crowe, M. Fitzclarence, J. Harward Yarra Glen 15.20(110) d Yarra Junction 5.8(38) Yarra Glen is sitting third on the ladder with a one-game break and have all but secured themselves the second chance, come finals time. Yarra Glen got the early break, kicking 4.2 to 1.3 in the first quarter. They held Yarra Junction goalless in the second term, but were wasteful in front of goal themselves, kicking 2.6 but the margin was 36 points at half-time. Six goals to three in the third quarter and the lead had blown out to 55 points at three-quarter time. Yarra Glen peppered the goals in the last, kicking 3.8 to 1.3 and came away with a solid win, but the margin could have been much more if they were tidy in front of goal. Yarra Glen Best: R. the second term and their lead was 18 points at half time. Alexandra’s second half saw them kick 10 goals to four and at the final siren it was Alexandra’s game. Alexandra Best: R. Norris, B. Healesville edged out The Eastern Region Girls Football competition kicked off its final series on the weekend, with the Healesville under-12s taking on Yarra Glen in the Elimination Final at Wandin. In a dour game, both teams defended hard and limited scoring opportunities. Healesville edged in front in the third quarter, scoring a major to go into the final quarter five points in front. The ball spent most of the quarter in the Yarra Glen forward-line, resulting in Yarra Glen going into the lead; Healesville with a last-ditch effort had the ball in their forward line, but some strong defence by Yarra Glen stopped Healesville from scoring in the final seconds of the game to clinch it.
Healesville now turns its sights to next season, where the club is planning to increase the number of girls teams at the club. Club president Toby Millman said “the club was planning to field under-10s, under-12s, under-14s, under-16s and under18s girls’ teams in 2018. So girls interested in playing should come along to the club’s ‘Come and Try’ session being held in October. Any girls interested in playing in 2018 can contact AnneMarie on 0400 604 164. Set for tight enduro race on speedway By Dean Thompson The annual Alexandra Speedway 3 Hour Enduro event livens up the Speedway world this Saturday night 12 August with 40 teams to compete for the title of Enduro Champions, with any number of combinations a great chance of taking the win if they can stay out of trouble and keep turning circles. The event continues to grow in popularity with competitors from various speedway cat-
egories over the past few years having made purchases of cars just to use in the 100 Lap Derby and the Three-Hour Enduro, and this year we add to them Colin Peadon from New South Wales and Wayne Laverty from Queensland looking to go the distance. Who can forget the finish to last season’s race? Again from the tight finish to the event in August 2016, the combination of defending champions and Eastern Suburbs lads
Lenny Bates and Andrew Jordan will be in the thick of the action, as will Pakenham area Brothers Damien and Brendan Miller, all four racers are Alexandra club members and popular with the fans. Another strong Alexandra combination is Steve Kershaw and Matt Stampfli, both competitors have had wins and top three finishes aplenty during the regular season and hope to gel to be at the finish with a chance to win the big show.
Lap Derby Luke Fallon- they will be very hard to beat. Racing kicks off down Gordon Street Alexandra at 2pm on Saturday with the big three-hour race likely to start about 6pm. Bring your family, some heating wood and a portable fire drum to enjoy the action. Adult entry cost of $20, Aged and Invalid pensioners $10, children between the age of 10 and 16 are $10 with a family ticket of two adults and three children of the age 10 to 16 at $60.
Matt Nelson and Cameron Dike are potentially an exciting combination with Nelson a multiple state champion a number of times and Dike a crowd pleasing racer who loves to go around the high line; Josh Service and Daniel Unternahrer, who is a former event winner form a team, and Brad Warren, who this season again finished second in the 100 Lap Derby for the second year running, has formed a team with Alexandra local resident and four-time champion in the 100

Warburton golf results Wednesday 2 August: Stroke and M. McGrann ‘Bag day’. On a pleasant day for golfing, the largest Wednesday field for ages, 34, played. At the top of the results, there was a tight finish. One of the newest members, David Viney, took out the win and therefore qualified to play off for the bag. David shot a Nett 66, but only won on a countback over unlucky Paul-Kennedy. P.K. I’m reliably informed, had a couple too many three-putt greens! Balls went down to 74. Nearest the pin winners were Rex Ryan (3rd), Kempton Senior (9th) and P.K whose 2nd shot on the 17th was only half a metre from the pin. Good shooting, P.K. Saturday 5 August: Stroke and Monthly Medal. On a Saturday when good scoring became difficult due to the very gusty winds, there were two outstanding results. B Grade, and the medal went to Liam Kay, the newest 11-year-old tyro! He had to shoot a great Nett 67 to get that result. A Grade was taken out by Jai Furness with a Nett 70. ‘But the secondbest daily result was young veteran, Angus Smith, who came in with a Nett 68! Balls got down to 75.The nearest the pin winners were Kevin Conway (3rd), Peter Fox (the 5th and 12th), Mike Plant (12th) and to Adam Patrick (15th).
