Soccer boils over Parents of Casey Comets players are threatening to quit the club after a junior soccer coach was stood down and suspended in the aftermath of an ugly incident at an under-10s match. Mike Somerville, the ex-coach of the Comets Hyenas side, was suspended for four weeks for misconduct by a Football Federation Victoria closed tribunal on 2 August. He was accused of inciting his players to misconduct by taking them to a kickboxing gym session at Sting gym days before the spiteful, abandoned match on 18 June. It is understood that both the Comets and the opposing side Peninsula

Strikers had sought a life ban for Mr Somerville. The Comets had already dismissed Somerville as coach days after the incident. In a video of the kickboxing session, the instructor taught players how to employ “dirty tactics” out of the referee’s gaze. “Apparently, you’re playing a dirty side this week,” he said as he swung an elbow at a punching bag held to his side by Somerville. “The ref has to be away from your vision,” he told the players. At the subsequent game, a Comets player felled a Peninsula Strikers opponent with a tackle, and then spun and kicked the player in the back.

“What are you doing? Stop it,” he allegedly told the Comets player. “I really think that if I hadn’t got in-between (the two boys) that the boy would’ve kicked (the Strikers player) again in the back or back of his head.” Mr Somerville, who had pleaded not guilty, is believed to have argued at the tribunal that he clarified the instructor’s advice later at the kickboxing session. He allegedly told his players that they ought to stick to playing football on the field. The tribunal is believed to have found Mr Somerville ought to have stepped in and objected to the instructor’s advice to the children earlier.

Mr Somerville had denied to Star News in July that the “bonding” session for parents and children was “training my boys to be violent”. “To blame the kickboxing is just ridiculous. I’ve never had issues with the other boys. “The kickboxing lesson had zero to do with how the player behaved. He knows what he did was extremely wrong, but he doesn’t know why he did it.” Bashar Abuusba, the father of one of Mr Somerville’s players, said up to eight of the side’s 12 families would leave the Comets at the end of the season as a result of losing “trust” in the club. - Continued on page 3

Strikers coach Troy Hicks allegedly ran in from the sidelines and loudly remonstrated with the eight-year-old Comets player at close quarters. The father of the Comets player then entered the fray, pushing Mr Hicks away from his son. Up to a dozen adult spectators entered the pitch, and the game was abandoned at the 15-minute mark. In his submission on the incident, Mr Somerville described Mr Hicks’ approach to the player as “unprofessional”, “disgraceful” and “hurl(ing) abuse and anger”. Mr Hicks submitted to the tribunal that he ran out on the pitch to protect his fallen player from further attack.

Wetland works begin Works on the Troups Creek West Wetland in Narre Warren North are set to begin with Melbourne Water confirming upgrades will commence this month. Senior Project Manager Aaron Broadway said the works will not affect the wetlands’ footprint. “We know the community loves this wetland and we want to reassure them that the size and shape of the wetland will not change as a result of our upgrade works,” he said. “While there will be more plants in the wetland there will still be areas of open water in the wetland after the works are completed.” “In order to improve recreational use of the wetland, Melbourne Water will

also create a new, formal shared use path for across the wetland site.” Melbourne Water will be improving the wetland to allow the excess water in the drainage system will be able to be flushed downstream and water levels reduced. Mr Broadway said the improvements will see a better quality of stormwater in the wetlands. “By adding new plant life to better filter the water and improving the control of water entering and leaving the wetland, we hope to see this wetland treating stormwater as intended,” he said. “These improvements will reduce nitrogen levels, and help reduce pollution

in downstream waterways and Port Phillip Bay.” “Plants are an essential part of wetlands and are used to capture fine particles and trap pollutants. It is important plants are not inundated to excessive depths for too long, as this may kill the plants and reduce the effectiveness of the treatment.” Wetlands have their own unique ecosystem and provide food, water, critical habitat and breeding grounds for a large range of birds, frogs and mammals. The works are expected to take about five months to complete and nearby residents may notice some extra dust and noise in the area while the works are undertaken.

Nossal helps out Fijians By Cam Lucadou-Wells Nossal High School has pitched in to help restore school libraries in cyclone-devastated Fiji. The school recently donated more than 300 academic books to the Director of Library Services of Fiji, to be distributed to the island’s schools. Nossal High information resource centre director Kamla Reddy said the books were surplus to the high school’s needs and better used in Fijian schools. Last year, Nossal High also sent 200 books to Tavua College, which suffered massive damage during Cyclone Winston. Nossal High principal Roger Page and students package books for delivery to Fijian schools.

Council just plows on Soccer row boils over

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Casey Council has voted to support a developer’s proposed roundabout at Berwick Springs Promenade, despite a gallery full of dissenters. At an 8 August council meeting, residents held placards stating ‘I OBJECT’ while their spokesman Michael Ball was warned for interjecting. The council tallied 205 formal objections to the project, which would shift and widen the existing Greaves Road roundabout and lead to the demolition of the Berwick Springs estate’s bluestone wall gateway. The decision means the council will support the proposal at an upcoming Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal hearing. After the vote, residents heckled Mayor Sam Aziz, who mockingly retorted that they were “great political campaigners”. Councillor Rex Flannery, in supporting the project, apologised for his criticisms of the council in his “past life” as a Casey Residents and Ratepayers Association president and a “keyboard warrior”. “I too took to the keyboard and I threw stones at the mayor and the council. “I’m eating a little humble pie. Now that I’m on the inside looking out I need to apologise ... I realise the pressures they’re under.” Cr Flannery said the council had investigated alternative sites for the roundabout to protect the estate’s entry, which would cost up to $9 million. “I can’t bear that cost. My job is to save money, not to waste it.” He said the council’s community consultation was “over and above” requirements, including an informa-

Michael Ball addresses Berwick Springs residents after the council meeting. 171520 Picture: CAM LUCADOU-WELLS tion drop-in session in June. As a result of resident concerns, the developer would have to submit redesigned plans for a restored estate gateway including two tiers of bluestone wall. The outcome would not adversely impact on the area’s amenity, Cr Flannery said. Cr Gary Rowe stressed the need to upgrade Greaves Road so VicRoads could take control and duplicate the essential connector road. “If we don’t have this road in the condition VicRoads will require, council will be responsible for $40

million of maintenance and upkeep of that road.” One option for Berwick Springs residents was to foot the $5 million cost of re-siting the roundabout in a local contributions plan, Cr Rowe said. “It’s not up to the rest of the City of Casey to bear that cost.” After the meeting, Mr Ball called for the resignations of Crs Flannery and Aziz for failing to stand up for their ward. “Both Springfield Ward councilors claim to act on behalf of the community. I ask which community

do they represent? Certainly not their own ward. “If they won’t resign, then next election Springfield Ward residents need to vote for a candidate that will listen, stand up and represent their community.” He said the residents had scored “small victories” with the required reinstatement of two bluestone walls and a reduction in the size of the roundabout. The residents now looked forward to stating their case at a VCAT hearing on the matter.

From front page They were upset that the Comets had sacked Mr Somerville, but failed to lodge a complaint against Mr Hicks’ “violent action against children”. “Does that give me the right to run out on the field and abuse a player? “For us, it’s about the incident on the field. That’s why it has made all of us angry.” Mr Abuusba said the kickboxing session and its social-media publication was a “mistake” that should be learned from. But there was no prepared attack on Strikers players, he said. He accused the Comets administration of seeking to protect itself from sanctions rather than support its coach. In a joint statement from the Comets and the Strikers, Casey denied of having prior knowledge of the kickboxing session. “Neither Casey Comets nor Peninsula Strikers JFC were charged with any offence. “Both clubs are satisfied that the tribunal has now assessed and resolved this issue. “Both clubs are working with the children affected, and will support/work with all local clubs and members to ensure ... a safe and enjoyable environment.” Football Federation Victoria had barred Star News from attending the hearing, and has not responded to most calls, texts and email inquiries from Star on the matter. It did not comment on the tribunal’s findings, nor did it make comment on the outcome. It also did not comment on its investigation of Mr Hicks, who did not return calls from Star News. FFV has a child safety policy, declaring a zero-tolerance approach to child abuse and that all children have a right to feel safe. According to the code of conduct, speaking to a minor in an “overly harsh, threatening, intimidating, shaming, derogatory, demeaning or humiliating” way is prohibited. An upcoming under-10s game between the Comets and the Strikers has meanwhile been cancelled.

Mayor tells Crestani to ‘grow up’ A conservative Casey councillor rift has been laid bare, with mayor Sam Aziz imploring his councillor Rosalie Crestani to “grow up” after a planning meeting on 8 August. During debate on a proposed Berwick Springs roundabout, Cr Crestani appeared to round on Cr Aziz before he successfully struck down her comments on a point-oforder for irrelevance. Cr Crestani was the only councillor to abstain from the vote, although stating the planning process was commendable and that there was a need for more road infrastructure. Her dissent was based on “some-

thing that needed to be said”. Cr Crestani said that she had been sent to a councillor code-ofconduct panel for calling “someone a bully” three years ago. She said she recently apologised to a Berwick Springs resident for behaviour that “put City of Casey at great reputational risk”. She told Star News that she was referring to Cr Aziz’s “disappointing” comments against opposing residents, despite demeaning protest signs depicting the mayor being planted around Berwick Springs. “I removed myself out of the vote in protest. We have to behave and treat our residents better.” Cr Aziz later said that Cr Cres-

tani had not forgiven him for abstaining from support for her “ridiculous” motion for the council to oppose marriage equality the previous week. It was dangerous territory for Casey to steer into issues that had nothing to do with local government, he said. “We can’t be distracted by personal, ideologically-driven agendas.” He said it was “irresponsible” and “appalling” of Cr Crestani to use a planning matter to serve as “payback”. “My message to her is to grow up.” Cr Crestani told Star News that

she was “gob-smacked” by Cr Aziz’s comparison of her motion to taking issue with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and missions to Mars. This ignored the voice of 700 Casey residents who signed to a petition calling for no change to the Marriage Act, she said. “I don’t know if I consider (my abstaining) was payback. We talk about playing as a team and the conservatives that say one thing behind closed doors and then when it comes to the vote they abstain. “I’m hoping people know it’s not being dropped now. There’s going to be more movement because I can’t ignore it.”

Two drug associates and housemates have been picked up by police in a car with drug paraphernalia and suspected stolen goods in Kooweerup, and charged with a string of other crimes. Joe Kovacs and Mathew Leigh Horsfield were found parked in the car with stolen plates on Ballarto Road on the night of 21 July. They both appeared in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 8 August. Cannabis was seized from Kovacs and a meth pipe was found on the floor under Horsfield’s driver’s seat. Elsewhere in the car was a motorbike helmet and 22 fishing lures still wrapped in their packaging. Horsfield told police he found the stolen number plates in his garage and affixed them

because his Astra was unregistered. Horsfield was also charged over pawning off power tools stolen from storage containers in Berwick in 2015, and stealing number plates from a broken-down Mercedes Sprinter van in Dandenong South in 2016. Kovacs, 45, was also charged over using bolt-cutters to cut cyclone fencing open at a Dandenong South factory on 6 August. More than $1000 of tools and battery chargers were stolen from the factory shed that night. Kovacs’s lawyer said their client had fallen back into ice abuse over the past three weeks, but had plans to move out of the area. He was convicted and placed on a 12-month treatment-based community corrections order with supervision.

Horsfield had been treated for declining mental health but “it appears there’s been nothing happening in the last couple of months”, his lawyer said. Prior to a lengthy spate of crime and a prison stint since 2015, Horsfield had been a hard worker and clean living for a long time, the court heard. Horsfield told the court he wanted to be a good father. “This is not the way to go about it,” Mr Vandersteen said. He downplayed Horsfield’s fatherhood as a means of avoiding prison. It had not deterred the accused from a lengthy spate of crime, the magistrate said. Horsfield was told he would be jailed for 14 days, followed by a community corrections order. “It’s up to you what you do when you get out,” Mr Vandersteen said.

Concern over missing teen Police are appealing for help to find 15-year-old girl Holly Feltham. She was last seen in Frankston at 5pm on Saturday 22 July, and is known to frequent Dandenong, Narre Warren and Endeavour Hills. Police are concerned for her welfare due to her age and the length of time she

has been missing. Holly is 155 centimetres tall with a slim build, medium-length black hair and blue eyes. She was wearing black leggings, a dark jacket and white Nike sneakers. Call St Kilda police station on 9536 2666 with any information.

Sam Childers is a man on a mission in Casey in August. churches had to stand up for and defend themselves with arms, otherwise they’d be killed. “How many times did God protect him and save so many children?” Mr Nalliah said he’d encountered persecution of Christians in Saudi Arabia and Indonesia. He at first was affronted by Indonesian Christians not “turning the other cheek” but arming themselves. “It’s a different environment. They were not going to stand back and let them rape their wife

and daughter and kill them.” Joel Cayzer, a senior minister at Turning Point church in Cranbourne, said he hoped Childers’ visit would encourage his church to be more missionary-minded. He said he’d have to think “very deeply” if he was in Childers’ situation in South Sudan and needed to resort to military tactics to protect others. “I admire the man for going over and helping the best he can. ‘He does more than pick up machine-guns.”

Mr Cayzer said he was looking forward to hearing Childers’ heart as he spoke of helping “the broken, the hurt and the poor”. It would be a preview glimpse for Turning Point’s youth mission to Uganda in December. Childers will speak at Catch the Fire church on 20 August, Lighthouse Christian School in Cranbourne on 24 August, 7pm and Turning Point church on 25 August, 6.30pm. The works of ‘Machine Gun Preacher’ Sam Childers have been unorthodox, perhaps violent. But his rescuing of countless children is a source of inspiration for local church leaders. The US-born Childers, who leads the Angels of East Africa aid organisation, is spreading his message in churches and schools in Hallam, Cranbourne and Cranbourne East in August. His life is undoubtedly chequered, as a former bikie and drug dealer. He turned his life around in church, building the largest orphanage in South Sudan and leading armed missions to rescue children from a rebel militia. As he built the orphanage amidst a death zone of murders and kidnappings, he famously slept under a mosquito net with a Bible in one hand and an AK-47 in the other. Despite the perils, Childers’s orphanage blossomed, feeding and housing more than 1000 children. He has since been the subject of the Hollywood film Machine Gun Preacher, and received the Mother Teresa Memorial International Award for Social Justice. His latest tour was held up for 20 months due to Childers’ visa being withheld by Australian immigration authorities. Among his stops will be Catch the Fire church in Hallam. Its pastor Daniel Nalliah said people would be inspired by the former “rough and tough guy” who “lays down his life to save children”. “It’s interesting that some of the

Ray Grainger: Good on you, Cr Crestani, for standing for traditional marriage between a man and a woman. Don’t buckle to those with no belief other than the world revolves around themselves! Hannah Stein: Gay people do not feel the world revolves around them, on this issue the world revolves around everyone but them. Becky Brandle: Do you realise that only 48 per cent of citizens in the City of Casey are Christian? Her opinions represent less than half of the area. Von Hoover: The 'sacred covenant of (biblical) marriage’ includes a man marrying his slave, marrying his concubine, marrying his widowed sister, a rapist marrying his victim, a man marrying multiple women, male soldiers marrying prisoners of war. This is the 21st century....we recently sent a probe to land on a comet! You want to take us back to the time when people cowered at night, terrified that the sun wouldn’t return the next morning. Marriage existed before your god was even invented! Becky Brandle: Marriage is one of the most “sacred covenants in human history”? What a crock! So it’s OK for a husband or wife to have an affair, or to even divorce but two people who love each other but are the same gender ruin the sacred covenant of marriage? It’s hypocrites like the church that ruin marriage. Stop hiding behind a ridiculous book that has been edited so many times over history that it’s not even relevant anymore. Chris McLucas: Historically, marriage was more of a business transaction than anything else, bringing assets together, not a religious ceremony. Many marriages are celebrated outside the Christian tradition or even (gasp!) without a god in sight. May I remind the councillors that many of their constituents are not of the Christian faith? Their personal religious beliefs have no place in local government. Jim Cormack: I just wish Casey Councillors would stick to City of Casey issues. Leave federal issues to federal governments. I’m sure there are enough issues in the City of Casey that their time is best spent on those rather than bringing their religious beliefs in to what is supposed to be a secular position, that of governing. Pamela Thornton: I too am cynical about the way people view marriage. It is certainly not sacred for many, many people. Yet people who do want to say they cherish each other are being denied that right. Belinda Burford: Interesting how people expect equality but show no tolerance or understanding if people don’t share their views. If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all. Lynne Moller: If people love one another that’s all we need. NOT Bible bashing. Good on you all for leaving this matter to the federal government. Kylie Lovett: No place for this debate at a local level, and if this councillor feels so pas-

Walk in the park helps out By Victoria Stone-Meadows A Lynbrook man along with a team of friends and family will be taking a walk in the park later this month to raise money and support people in the community living with Parkinson’s disease. John McKenzie was diagnosed with Parkinson’s eight and half years ago and said he didn’t know much about the illness when he was diagnosed. Mr McKenzie and his wife Maria started their own peer support group for sufferers and their carers and Mr McKenzie said it was one of the best things he ever did. He said getting to know other people who shared common experiences with the illness had helped him deal with his own symptoms. “Most people are as ignorant about Parkinson’s as I was,” he said. “People think of Parkinson’s as old people that shake and while that’s the truth, it’s actually an incredibly complex condition that is intuitive as it progresses.” “I think having information about the condition, what you can do, tips and tricks, advice, and sharing experiences is all quite comforting.” Mr McKenzie will be participating in Parkinson’s Victoria’s annual fundraising event ‘A Walk in the Park’ for

the first time this year at Federation Square on Sunday 27 August. “I haven’t done it before but because I run this peer support group for Parkinson’s Victoria, I thought it was about time I practised what I preached,” he said. “So I tried to get a few people interested and I decided to get a few friends and family together to get us registered.” A Walk in the Park is Australia’s largest community event dedicated to improving the lives of people living with Parkinson’s and brings together those living with Parkinson’s, families, carers, health professionals, friends and supporters to create positive change. It was through running the peer support group and being involved with Parkinson’s Victoria that Mr McKenzie found out about deep brain stimulation. Mr McKenzie will undergo this invasive surgery on Wednesday 9 August, where doctors will implant a medical device called a neurostimulator to send impulses through implanted electrodes specific targets in the brain. He said he would never have considered the surgery as a way of dealing with his symptoms if it weren’t for his involvement with Parkinson’s Victoria. “I went to a seminar they run, a kind of get together for people with deep

Mr McKenzie said there was so much to be gained from sharing experiences with Parkinson’s and encouraged anyone who needs the support to get in touch. “The first thing that struck me when I went to a support group in Frankston was it was such a relief to talk to people who could finish your sentence for you,” he said.

“All these people going through the same thing as you; it gives you a real sense of comfort.” If you are someone who you know want to participate in the ‘Walk in the Park’ or would like to discuss becoming a member of the peer support group, call John and Maria McKenzie on 03 8743 4565 or 0417 525 234 or email majohnm@yahoo.com.au.

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Narre Warren man accused of drug trafficking days after being released on a community corrections order has been refused bail. William Quoch, 39, was allegedly intercepted with 18.3 grams of heroin in a car outside a known Dandenong drug-dealing den by police on 6 August, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told. The unemployed man was found with $8870 cash, as well as garden scissors that he admitted was used to cut drugs, police informant Sergeant Kerry Burke told the court on 7 August. Also in the car was about five grams of prescription tablets and a bottle of suspected GHB, the court heard. Quoch had allegedly told

police he was using up to 4.8 grams of heroin daily - a habit costing up to $250 a day. With a 15-page criminal history, he had been placed on an 18-month community corrections order for drug offences at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court just over a fortnight earlier. He was also on bail at the time for a range of allegations including trafficking methamphetamine. Quoch was allegedly in breach of bail conditions by associating with a named drug offender, who was at the Dandenong drug den where he was arrested, Sgt Burke said. Quoch, who represented himself, told the court he went to the address to retrieve his car and didn’t know the offender was there at the time. He also had no knowledge

of the heroin being inside the car, he said. The thousands of dollars of cash was from Centrelink, he added. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted Quoch was on bail for exactly the same type of offences. The accused had five prior convictions for drug trafficking over the past 19 years and had recently been released from prison for drug offences, Mr Vandersteen said. “I’m not confident you will comply with any condition of bail.” As Quoch was led back into police cells, he asked Mr Vandersteen if there was any chance of getting bail with a surety. “Not a chance,” Mr Vandersteen replied. Quoch was remanded in custody for a later hearing.

A Narre Warren father of three is appealing his jail term for running a red light and crashing during two hair-raising police pursuits within a month. David Francis Lamb, 33, crashed a car into a home’s fence after speeding from police in a “dangerous and reckless manner” at up to 125 km/h in a 60 km/h zone about 4.30am in Wonthaggi, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told. He was arrested after climbing out of a passenger window and hiding in trees next to the crashed, unregistered purple Commodore. Lamb later told police he accelerated from the police’s lights and sirens because he didn’t have a licence. “I just wasn’t thinking straight,” he told police. A month earlier, the still unlicensed driver failed to pull over for police and ran a red light in his Commodore on Bass Highway, Grantville about 6.20pm.

Another vehicle was forced to brake and take evasive action to avoid Lamb’s car at the Pier Road intersection. Police then deactivated their lights and sirens and pulled their divisional van to a halt. It was “stupidity, to be honest,” he later told police. “I don’t have a reason.” Lamb, who pleaded guilty to all charges, had an “unblemished” life up until he turned 30, his lawyer told the court on 7 August. The accused’s life had unravelled due to significant alcohol and drug abuse as well as mental health issues. He had breached community corrections orders and served six months in jail. At the time of the offences, Lamb was using up to two grams of methamphetamine daily. Since then, Lamb had turned his life around. He had taken positive rehabilitative steps with ongoing counselling, medical treatment and clean sets of

urine screens, the lawyer said. He had gained employment and was in a supportive relationship, the court heard. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted there was no suggestion of Lamb being affected by drugs or alcohol at the time of the pursuits. He said there was a need for courts to denounce such dangerous driving that placed the community at “enormous risk”. “You were very fortunate in the last incident you had an accident ... that there wasn’t a tree there, there wasn’t a pedestrian or someone in their front garden. “The impact on victims of car accidents is life-long, whether it’s serious injury or death.” Lamb was jailed for three months, put on an 18-month supervised community corrections order and disqualified from driving for 18 months. Lamb has been released on bail as he awaits his County Court appeal.

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Narre Warren CFA has been rocked by a recent theft and suspicious fence fire at their brigade station. A volunteer member, who had parked his toolladen trailer out the back after doing landscaping jobs at the station, was the chief victim. Landscaping equipment and tools worth nearly $6000 were stolen from his padlocked trailer late in the night of 25 July. The tools were believed to have been placed in two wheelie bins and rolled out of the station south on Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road. The theft was discovered by brigade members when they were called to a fence fire at the station at 1.50am on 26 July. “It’s unfortunate that’s the world we live in today,” the brigade’s captain Paul Hardy said. He reeled off several recent intrusions into the station’s yard - car burnouts, syringes, kids on bikes hanging around at night. “We’ve had CCTV here for about three years. People don’t seem to care.” Mr Hardy said the slow-burning fire had just started to take in nearby vegetation and threatened to spread to adjoining properties. A section of the fence was significantly damaged. He said it was not known if the fire and the theft were related. The brigade has released CCTV footage of an intruder walking towards the trailer about 11pm on 25 July. Any information to Narre Warren police station on 9705 3111 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

New campus, big plans By Bonny Burrows With a new campus and a new leader, Federation University (FedUni) has big plans for its Berwick campus, come 2018. The university, which this year shares Monash University’s Clyde Road campus, will formally take over the site next year. Federation University’s first female ViceChancellor, Helen Bartlett, is overseeing the university during its transition period, and said the procurement of the Berwick campus made sense for the university’s vision. “This campus was a very obvious and sensible acquisition for the university, that’s really trying to build its presence in this eastern corridor,” Professor Bartlett said. “As you know, the area’s expanding so rapidly, and the vision for FedUni here is to meet the needs of this growing community.” The move from Monash to FedUni would be seamless, according to the vice-chancellor, but would result in big changes for the better. Professor Bartlett, who has worked for both universities, said while Monash was “very focused on the school leaver and the high ATAR”, FedUni hoped to make local tertiary study accessible to all. “FedUni is very different. It’s looking much more at learning across the lifespan,” Professor Bartlett said. The hope is to appeal to the area’s large migrant population, as well as mature aged students looking to re or upskill. Courses offered include nursing, business, information technology and veterinary, but will expand “with the needs of the community”. The university also wants to expand its delivery modes into multiple formats. A video that recently went viral of a lecturer on his first day facing an empty classroom was a “clear example” that times had changed, according to Professor Bartlett. She said today’s students expected greater flexibility. “Students now need to engage, they need to do real work, to build team skills, need to do a lot

Federation University Vice-Chancellor Helen Bartlett is leading the Berwick campus through its transition period. 171121 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS more individual learning as opposed to just getting content regurgitated in the classroom,” Professor Bartlett said. “So I think that picture signalled to me something from the past and a transition and that’s another area of focus for FedUni - that blended learning. “We’re not quite there yet, but we’re moving towards a future possibility where students can select what they want to do, where they want to do it, any time and in any mode.

“That is, I think, a very urgent gap for a university like ours to fill, trying to build capability. I think we’re still moving to that greater flexibility of offerings.” While the university is still finding its place within the Casey Cardinia community, Professor Bartlett said it would soon become a local leader. “FedUni has a lot of experience and talent in terms of community engagement - that’s a really great strength,” Professor Bartlett said.

“It very much embeds itself in the communities it operates. And I think we can see already that there’s been quite a good response here to FedUni, and as it gets more established and engage more widely the community, I think you will see the activities here really become about supporting that community, helping it to grow. “So I think that in a nutshell is where I see FedUni, it’s the start of the journey but it’s a very exciting one, not just for FedUni but the local community.”

Don’t have time to put life on hold for orthodontic treatment? No problem. Thanks to Straight Smiles in Pakenham and Invisalign orthodontics, choosing between straightening teeth and enjoying life isn’t an issue - now both can be done at the same time! As Straight Smiles Pakenham Practice manager Casey Bennett explained, Invisalign treatment works to effectively straighten teeth while still letting patients do the things they love. “Invisalign aligners are removable, so it’s easier to clean your teeth and maintain your oral health during treatment,” Casey said. “Unlike traditional braces, there are no metal brackets and wires getting in the way of flossing and brushing. Plus, you can actually remove the trays for eating, which means no more giving up your favourite foods or fear of going around with a head of broccoli stuck in your braces,” she said.

With doctor visits only required about every six to eight weeks, Invisalign treatment is ideal for a busy schedule. “The clear aligners are virtually invisible, and more comfortable than ever before, meaning you can always smile confidently,” Casey explained. “So, whether you’re an adult who has delayed treatment for fear of being the only 30 or 40-something in the office with orthodontic gear, or a teenager hesitant to head to a party with brackets crowding your smile and style, Invisalign clear aligners could be the answer. “It’s time to stop waiting and wishing for straighter teeth, and ask the Straight Smiles Orthodontic team about Invisalign treatment today!” Straight Smiles Pakenham is located at Suite 1/63 Main Street in Pakenham. The motion will see Casey Council making contact with surrounding councils at Cardinia, Bass Coast, Baw Baw, Latrobe, Mornington Peninsula, South Gippsland, Western Port, and Yarra Ranges seeking support from them to establish an equestrian centre in the region. Cr Ablett said after the plan for establishing an equestrian centre at Tonimbuk in Cardinia fell through, he has not given up on funding a new place for a regional centre. “Someone jumped in three days before our offer and bought the land at Tonimbuk, it was the quarry people if I remember correctly,” he said. “As councils we can’t spend money on land we don’t own but that would have been ideal and Cardinia and Casey would be able to contribute to and profit from the centre.” Cr Ablett conceded land in Casey would be too expensive for this kind of project and that is why he wants to establish a joint project with other councils in the region. Cr Ablett says the South-East region is crying out for an equestrian centre and he is determined to make sure one is built to fit the community’s needs. “I am looking for something around the 150 to 200-acre mark that allows us to have cross country, indoor infrastructure, and caters for a huge crosssection of equestrian needs in the region,” he said. “Horses are a bigger industry than

Emma Wolsley with horse 'Noni', Cr Geoff Ablett, Alexander Norris with 'Charlie' the Shetland Pony, Kylie Matz and Lynda Hayes with "Abbey Rose' at Genevra Park in Pearcedale. 171333 Picture: ROB CAREW racing, equestrian is a 20 per cent silent giant of our economy and with the Werribee centre booked out all year round and costs gone up 30 per cent, we need something similar out here.” Cr Ablett was quick to add that a regional equestrian centre in the SouthEast would not take business away from trainers and teachers in the area. “We have a private population who may have show-jumping and arenas, grass dressage, and cross country and

they do a fantastic job of training and coaching,” he said. “But they are all scattered and spread out and we want to build something to complement that, not to replace it.” “We need something on this side of Melbourne that will allow people to come from all over Gippsland and not have to travel through Melbourne with their floats,” he said

He said the amount of money that local governments, including Casey, have spent on other sports in the last few years has been a particularly bitter point for women in the region. “About 70 per cent of people in equestrian are female and not building this centre has been a slap in the face for women,” he said. “They feel they are being looked over ... why not have something that tens of thousands of women are

passionate about?” “I am not giving up on this idea; we are serious about getting something in the South-East; it may cost a million to kick off but long-term we need something like this out here and now is the time to act,” he said. On the back of the motion, Casey Council will write to other councils in the area and a report will be compiled of their responses for presentation at Casey in three to four months’ time.

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST

Barefoot guru bares soul By Narelle Coulter Singer, actor and radio presenter Clare Bowditch took a room full of businesswomen, and a handful of men, back to their childhoods at a women’s business lunch on Friday 4 August. The lunch, held at the Cardinia Cultural Centre, was hosted by the City of Casey and Cardinia Shire. Bowditch, mother of three and founder of Big Hearted Business, spoke about her own journey from shy teenager to ARIA-winning songwriter. “We are in this room as apparent businesspeople from all different areas, all different walks of life but in actual fact, we’re here to build relationships," she said, animatedly walking around the stage in a long black dress and cream crochet cardigan. Settling into her presentation, Bowditch abandoned her flat black shoes in the middle of the stage, padding about in bare feet, her toenails a shade of pale pink. “The most useful thing that I can do for any of you - besides talk about my fabulous life - which is how it sounds on paper, I can tell you the reality is quite different - but the most helpful thing I can do is help you connect to each other." She cajoled the audience into connecting with each other by urging them to reveal their childhood dreams to someone they didn’t know, saying “in that childhood dream of who you wanted to be is a clue about what you’re good at". “What were you good at as a child? What came easily to you? Because in that kernel is the answer to your success as a businessperson and the answer to your success in your career and the answer to your desire to be happy for God’s sake. “Many of us are paralysed by the question ‘what is the meaning of my life, what is the purpose?’ It’s a big question to ask, I get it. I’ve been asking it since I was three, four and five years old.“ Ms Bowditch said she knew even as a child that she “wanted to do something that made a difference in the world“. To achieve that she set her sights on becoming Miss World 1979. Hospitals were the landscape of Bowditch’s childhood, as she and her family spent years comforting older sister Rowena who died of a rare condition aged seven. “I knew that I wanted to save her and I thought that if I became Miss World, I would have power and influence. I only worked that out in the last decade. For a long time I judged my childhood dream, I thought 'what a shallow bitch'. “But really, in that childhood dream was a desire to do more. I didn’t get to save my sister but I did get that gift that she left me which is, carry on, do the best that you can. You can be powerful in a small, tiny, little way - she was." Bowditch said she always had a burning desire to “do something that mattered". After finishing school, she stumbled along a path, which included a PR course and call centre work, until anger drove her to pursue her real love - singing/songwriting. “I thought, I’m angry, why aren’t there people like me out there making music? Why do you have to take your clothes off to be popular in a film clip? So whatever it is that’s burning in you, itching in you, what’s on fire in you, the thing that pisses you off the most is perhaps yet another clue in what your journey is supposed to be in this life. What is the problem that you are yearning to solve?" Her awakening about her own des-

I had no idea why I would need the language of leadership or business, I was just planning to have a hit single, get rich and retire," she said, laughing. “But Fabian taught me what it

days a week on ABC radio so she can devote another day to writing and singing. At that she picked up her guitar and gently played one of her own compositions. “You don’t have to be one thing, but you have to start with something," she sang. “Maybe today is that little start for

means to understand the different parts of ourselves. She taught me something very important early on - we’re just people. There is no work you and you, you that is not interconnected." Ms Bowditch said being a mother “informs everything I know about trying to make a business work". She urged the largely female audience to “work out what you need to stay sane" explaining she works four

you," she concluded. The event also included a panel of local businesswomen - Allison Merrigan from St John of God, Nikki Jurcutz from Hero Headquarters, Vicki MacDermid a partner at Pitcher Partners and Federation University vicechancellor professor Helen Bartlett discussing the challenges and rewards of their industries.

FROM PAGE 1 RMS HOMES Macquarie Streamline 220E is a design which has been tailored to suit smaller blocks which are becoming more frequent in land estates. It is remarkable to think a design that incorporates four bedrooms, including a master bedroom featuring a grand, fully-fitted walk-in robe with a connecting dual vanity ensuite, a butler’s pantry to the kitchen, two living areas, double car garage and an alfresco can fit on a block as small as 350 square metres (12.5m wide by 28m deep). RMS Homes have found a way to cleverly design the Macquarie Streamline 220E to incorporate all of the above, plus their famous Turnkey Essential Inclusions. In August, RMS have launched their revised turnkey essential inclusions which now feature: •฀Euro฀567฀litre฀side฀by฀side฀ice฀ dispensing fridge; •฀Euro฀6kg฀front฀load฀washing฀machine; •฀Euro฀7kg฀front฀load฀clothes฀dryer; •฀Euro฀138-litre฀bar฀fridge;฀ •฀20mm฀Quantum฀quartz฀stone฀waterfall฀ ends to Kitchen Island Benches; and •฀Your฀choice฀of฀15฀bricks. ABUNDANCE OF ART FOR COLOURING COMPETITION FIRST National Neilson Partners was lucky enough to support and be involved in The Big Freeze Festival, an event for children and their families held over the school holidays at Fountain Gate. In support of the nine-day event, First National Neilson Partners ran a successful colouring competition, handing out more than 1000 colouring sheets to all of the enthusiastic young artists who came from near and far to attend the event. With an iPad Mini as first prize, it’s no wonder there was an abundance of entries, though there could only be one winner. Congratulations to nine-year-old Daniela Tapio who’s colouring stood out among the rest. Daniela could not have been happier to be the first prize winner and the recipient of her new iPad Mini. There were other standouts too and as result three lucky runners up were selected. Nine-year-old Lukas, seven-yearold Eloise and eight-year-old Molly all received a $50 Village Movie voucher for their outstanding efforts. First National Neilson Partners extends a huge thank you to our guest judge, local art teacher at Harkaway Primary School Liz Walford, for selecting our winners and thanks to all the wonderful entrants who participated in such a successful competition. Keep a look out for the next competition in the new year.

Charity angels start young By Victoria Stone-Meadows Narre Warren mother and charity entrepreneur Kelly Warren believes more children should be involved in charity work from young ages. Ms Warren was an outreach worker for a national charity until about six weeks ago when she decided to strike out on her own to help homeless and vulnerable people in Melbourne. She started the BK 2 Basics Melbourne charity that collects clothes, blankets, sleeping rolls, and personal hygiene items for Melbourne’s homeless and connects them other support services. Ms Warren’s daughters, Shanleigh, 17, Kaidi, 8, and Rhyan, 9, go along with her to collect donations, make care packs and help those in need. She said at first she wasn’t sure about the girls coming along with her to the city, but found her children had really found a love of helping others. “The girls wanted to come out with

me while I was doing handouts, and I was quite hesitant in the beginning because I was new to running my own charity,” she said. “I didn’t know what to expect, but we never have any trouble, and if there was the slightest hint of trouble, I wouldn’t have the kids there.” The girls themselves say they really enjoy the time they spend with their mum helping others and improving the lives of vulnerable people. “We went down to Batman Park one night, and there was a man who only has a box under a tree,” eightyear-old Kaidi said. “He was sleeping on it, so we gave him a blanket and we gave him a sleeping roll and sleeping bag, and he smiled and he said, 'thanks'.” “We are making a difference.” They said that being involved in charity work had taught them to appreciate what they had and not to judge people. “We go to other people’s houses to

collect things, or they bring them to us and we sort through them,” nine-yearold Rhyan said. “We are going out and helping; working for things for other people.” “I learned to appreciate that I have a

roof over my head and a home, and that I am lucky that I have a family.” “I am happy that I am helping because if we weren’t there they wouldn’t have clothes and would have frozen,” Kaidi said.

Ms Warren said she was so proud of her children for their willingness to help others and said more children should be involved with charities to teach them about compassion and humility. “It should be part of school with any charity like going to the RSPCA or working in rest homes and spending time with elderly,” she said. “More kids should be involved because it opens their eyes that it isn’t a perfect world and there are people that struggle.” “The girls are even concerned others at their school don’t have lunch and they will give their lunch away.” Ms Warren is hopeful she will be able to expand the scope of BK 2 Basics and include getting lunches at local schools and helping the homeless or vulnerable people in the City of Casey as well. To find out more about the charity or to lend a hand, Ms Warren can be contacted via the BK 2 Basics Facebook page.

Master of songs in full voice By Cam Lucadou-Wells Young choristers were given a lesson from a master during a rehearsal for the upcoming Victorian State Schools Spectacular. During the 3 August visit, professional vocalist Rob Latham led a 50-strong choir of students from Narre Warren South P-12 College and Berwick Lodge Primary School. Latham, who has toured extensively as an opera and a capella singer, once sang with the

spectacular’s Mass Choir as a student in 1995. He was the principal vocalist for the spectacular in 2001. Since then he’s performed in opera companies and groups such as the male a capella group Suade. The students have been practising for months ahead of joining 1000 others from 59 Victorian state schools in an enormous mass choir at the schools spectacular in September.

The event hosts more than 3000 students taking part in dance, music, song, puppetry and magic as well as behind the scenes on lights, audio and stage management. “It’s a massive production for all involved and a magnificent experience for students,” a spokeswoman for the spectacular said. The Victorian State Schools Spectacular performs two shows at Hisense Arena on Saturday, 16 September.

Eagles host big dance By David Nagel Beaconsfield’s sparkling facility at Holm Park Reserve will book-end the 2017 South East Football Netball League (SEFNL) finals series after winning hosting rights for this year’s grand final. The Eagles’ home ground will kick things off on Saturday 26 August, hosting the qualifying final, before Berwick and Pakenham take control of further preliminaries before the action returns to Holm Park for the biggest dance of all on Saturday 16 September. Berwick will be the home of Sunday sport, hosting the elimination and first semi-finals on 27 August and 3 September respectively, with Pakenham’s Toomuc Reserve the home of the second semi-final on Saturday 2 September before backing up with the preliminary final on 9 September. Beaconsfield Football Club president Troy Robinson said the club was excited to be hosting the biggest event on the SEFNL calendar. “We pride ourselves on the great facilities we have here at Beaconsfield, and it’s a massive opportunity for us to showcase those facilities on the biggest stage,” Robinson said. “We’re focused on this becoming a great event with a heavy community involvement and we want community groups from around the area to share in the benefits. The Upper Beaconsfield CFA is already on board, and there are plenty of options we need to discuss as we work through our planning phase.” Beaconsfield, Berwick and Pakenham were the only clubs to tender to host finals; a process shortened after the league’s governing body - AFL South East - reversed its original decision to host the grand final under lights at Casey Fields. Pressure from the nine SEFNL clubs- who were unanimous in their

Beaconsfield’s Holm Park Reserve will host this year’s South East Football Netball League grand final. 144227 Picture: ROB CAREW support of a day grand final- forced AFLSE to change its mind. Robinson said the football and netball clubs were hoping to bring the community together for the day. “We want to bring a carnival atmosphere to the day, because it’s not just a celebration for Beaconsfield, it’s a celebration for the community and for SEFNL as a whole,” he said. “We’d love all nine clubs to be in-

volved in some capacity and bring a great family atmosphere to the day. We only have a small window to get ready now, but we intend to bring a point of difference with the sole focus on attracting as many people as possible to what should be a great event.” Officer has hosted the last two SEFNL grand finals - and its expertise has been called upon. “Barry (Officer president Barry O’Loughlin) has been great with his

advice, just advising us of the little bits and pieces that made their experience so rewarding,” Robinson said. “Barry has been brilliant with his support, even to the point of offering us equipment to borrow on the day.” The main issue regarding Beaconsfield as a suitable host for the grand final centred on its ability to segregate vehicles and pedestrians on a busy stretch of Beaconsfield-Emerald Road.

Robinson said the club was taking traffic management responsibilities very seriously indeed. “We will have limited parking at the ground, up to 500 cars, but we have Akoonah Park and Perc Allison Reserve to help us out in that regard,” Robinson said. “Our main concern is getting pedestrians safely to and from the ground, and we will employ a traffic management company to make sure the transition is done in a safe way. We’ve hosted two VFL games this year, so our experience is building, but we expect this crowd to exceed anything we’ve seen before ... the key driver being the weather.” SEFNL Leagues manager Liz Triffitt said the league was confident that Beaconsfield would do an outstanding job. “Firstly, I’d like to thank all three clubs for taking part in the tender process and for offering up three outstanding venues to host this year’s finals series,” Triffitt said. “The Holm Park Reserve facility is a great venue, and we’re confident Beaconsfield will showcase the league in the best possible way.” Triffitt also confirmed that the league will produce a hard-copy footy record for the duration of the finals series. SEFNL FINALS SERIES VENUES Saturday 26 August - Qualifying Final at Beaconsfield Sunday 27 August - Elimination Final at Berwick Saturday 2 September - Second semi-final at Pakenham Sunday 3 September - First semifinal at Berwick Saturday 9 September - Preliminary Final at Pakenham Saturday 16 September - Grand Final at Beaconsfield

Top coaching panel for Swans will spread their wings By Nick Creely Former Victorian quick Jayde Herrick will return to Casey-South Melbourne in 2017/'18 as a bowling coach, as the Swans continue to assemble the most impressive coaching panel in the competition. Herrick, 32, played 61 matches for the Swans between 2008-2013, taking 115 wickets and scoring 829 runs while he managed to take 77 wickets in a 19-game first-class career with both Victoria and Wellington. The bustling quick will combine his time between the Swans and Mornington Peninsula club Somerville, where he has signed a deal to captain the club’s first XI in 2017/'18. It comes after the Swans signed former Sri Lankan test cricketers Prabath Nissanka, 37, as the club’s head coach and Naveed Nawaz as the club’s batting coach, while Dane Harkin has been retained as the development coach. Swans president Ross Hibbins is thrilled that the club has been able to

Jayde Herrick bowling during his Casey-South Melbourne days. Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS land such an impressive coaching panel, and said it would only add to the excitement of his developing club. “Our goal strategically was to get the best coaches - we now feel we’ve landed that, and we are proud and happy about it,” he said.

The input of Herrick is probably the biggest coup for the club this offseason, with the club’s highly talented pace group - spearheaded by Brendan Rose and Nathan Lambden - ready to take the competition by storm. “He’ll be there during Sunday

matches, and through every session of the pre-season which is really exciting for us,” Hibbins said. “He’ll obviously work closely with our younger bowlers, and be a real mentor to our guys, and he’ll just impart his knowledge on the playing group.” Nawaz, the 43-year-old who was head coach of the ‘Futures League Cricket Academy’ in Dubai, is also set to add experience and knowledge to Nissanka’s disposal this season, while Harkin has been busy developing the next batch of Casey-South Melbourne cricketers in the Junior Development Program. “Naveed will focus on the batting, but also with his experience, will work closely with Prabath and provide the structure that we are striving for,” Hibbins said. “Dane has just been outstanding in his role with the Junior Development Program, and has brought it all together brilliantly - we feel there are some great players that hopefully want to play cricket with us in the future come

out of there.” With the Swans in the midst of preseason, Hibbins acknowledged that the culture and vibe around the place - driven from a talented senior group and a legacy left by former coach Brian Keogh - will take his club to greater heights. “Our senior players are really taking ownership and driving outcomes for this club,” he said. “It’s a long-term venture, and we’re really excited about where we are heading.” And although it is unlikely that the club will add any mature players from other clubs, Hibbins said the focus is purely on developing the talent already there. “We are just focused on players that are coming through - we are extremely confident we can grow our young talent,” he said. The Swans will kick-start their 2017/'18 campaign with a clash against Ringwood on 7 October at Casey Fields.

’Rays avenge hated loss By Nick Creely Back at their Shepley Oval fortress, the Dandenong Stingrays expectedly dispatched the bottom-placed Bendigo Pioneers by a whopping 89 points on a windy Saturday afternoon. After last week’s gut-wrenching two-point loss to Gippsland Power, the ‘Rays - desperate to get their top four hopes back on track - were in no mood to muck around right from the start. With a six-goal breeze favouring the ‘Rays in the opening term, the home side were on the board almost instantly through big man Bailey Williams. Quick goals to Finlay Bayne, Jamie Plumridge and Jai Nanscawen, who kicked a ripper out of a forward 50 stoppage, suddenly saw the home side lead 30 to 0 after just 10 minutes of play. They didn’t stop there, with the ‘Rays banging on another four goals and three behinds in the final 20 minutes to almost ice the game at quarter time - 51-points ahead of a clearly dejected Pioneers outfit. The ‘Rays - off the back of their usual suspects in midfield jet Hunter Clark, Riley D’Arcy (four goals), Nanscawen (two goals) and skipper Josh Bateman - added further pain, slamming on another 10 goals in the next two quarters to take an ominous 81-point lead into the final change. After a goal early in the final term to young forward Bayne, the feeling was well and truly out of the game, with the ‘Rays significantly taking the foot off the pedal.

Stingrays coach Craig Black was thrilled that his side not only responded to last week’s tough loss, but played a finals brand of football. “It was pleasing - the way we went about winning it after a disappointing result the week before was good, we had a great intent to compete hard,” he said. “We had 16 shots in the first quarter, and kicked seven goals - it would have been great to maybe convert a few more but we were really pleased to start well, but our work ethic, ability to run and carry the ball in the second quarter really set up the win.” Black was full of praise for two of his elite players, with Hunter Clark (32 disposals, two goals) and Riley D’Arcy (four goals) putting the Pioneers to the sword, but acknowledged the presence of his younger kids in generating some energy. “Hunter has been outstanding - we changed his role up and is relishing the midfield, getting his hands on the footy and kicking goals too - Riley D’Arcy kicked four and had about five scoring assists, and our 17-year-olds were great, like Fin Bayne, Jamie Plumridge and Jai Nanscawen,” he said. “He (D’Arcy) worked up the ground a lot more and got more possessions between the arc which was really pleasing for Riley, and hopefully something he can do more of going forward - we’ve been really working on his effort around the contest, and we’re really happy with that, he had a great game.” Despite banging down the door in fifth-spot with a 10-5 record, Black

STATE LEAGUE 2 - SOUTH EAST The race for the two promotion spots looks like going down to the wire with four games to go as the top five teams are separated by just one win. Doveton lost 2-0 to Beaumaris on the weekend but still remain in second spot closely followed by local rivals Berwick in what is one of the tightest leagues in years.

There is very little separating both Doveton and Berwick Picture: ROB CAREW with just four games to go. 166493 The victorious Berwick City recorded its 11th win of the season beating North Caulfield 3-0. City controlled the game from the outset and its keeper Christian Morales was rarely troubled in difficult conditions at Caulfield Park. A well taken solo goal to rookie Jonathon Ichim in the first half was followed by a brace to veteran Steve Vernon in the second half. Berwick take on fourthplaced Mazenod on Saturday at Jack Thomas Reserve in a crucial game for both team’s promotion hopes. Doveton is also at home against mid-table Heatherton. STATE LEAGUE 5 - SOUTH Friday night football graced IYU Recreation Reserve on Fri-

day night with Pakenham United and Bunyip Strikers fighting out a thrilling 1-1 draw. The local rivals battled it out in the cold weather but the atmosphere was certainly hot. Both sides managed to score a goal in the first half before the game tightened up and the defences locked on their opponents. Despite both teams having their chances in attack, either side could find the back of the net. The Casey Panthers, meanwhile, endured a tough 0-3 loss to Rowville, a team breathing down the neck of the placed Sandown. In other matches, Sandown belted Somerville 5-0, Drouin lost to Lyndale in a high-scoring affair 4-6 and Chelsea FC defeated White Star Dandenong 2-0.

FFV STATE LEAGUES REVIEW - ROUND 18 STATE LEAGUE 1 - SOUTH EAST The Casey Comets were unable to deal with Clifton Hill’s strength in attack and stinginess in defence on Saturday afternoon, going down 1-2 at Comets Stadium. The Hillmen - who are ranked third best for defence in the league - made life tough for the Comets in the first half, managing to hold them scoreless while kicking a goal in the 30th minute via Casey Thomas. Another goal in the 55th minute to Clifton Hill’s Michael Catalano shut the door on a Comets comeback, with the visitors proving a class above. A late consolation prize to Michael Catalano capped off a decent second half for the Comets who, despite being outclassed, fought back admirably. The Comets have a great chance for a win on Saturday night when they travel to face Mooroolbark SC.

Doves get act together By David Nagel Doveton has had its broken heart mended somewhat and gained a psychological advantage over its likely elimination final opponent with a 48-point victory over Beaconsfield at Robinson Oval. The Saturday night fixture promised plenty, providing the Doves with the opportunity to bounce back from consecutive single-digit losses to Berwick and Tooradin - against an Eagles’ side searching for their first legitimate scalp since round three. A desperate home side set up its win in the first half, with coach Aaron Davey kicking two crucial goals into the wind in the first term before the Doves put the pedal to the metal in the second quarter. Two goals to a lively Charlie O’Neill turned a seven-point deficit into a lead, before Nick Battle and Davey put the icing on the cake with some classy finishes. Battle’s trusty left foot had the radar dialled in from close to the boundary before Davey read the play magnificently, hitting the contest at full pace to soccer one through and give his side a handy advantage. But it was Battle’s next piece of brilliance that really did light up the night sky. Pushed in the back by Eagles defender Corey Walker, the league best and fairest candidate found himself 80 metres out on centre wing. He baulked Walker on the mark before running his full distance and launching a bomb from outside 60. The Doves banked a four-goal lead at half time and maintained a 14-point margin heading into a wind-assisted final term. A 5.4 to 0.0 finish rubber stamped a victory that was well celebrated after the recent spate of close defeats. Davey said his side had learnt plenty through the hard times. “What we learned is that good teams respond under pressure, and you can’t afford to drop off at any stage,” he said. “We played good footy for probably 108 minutes against Berwick, but it’s those lapses in concentration that cost us the chance to beat a really good football team. It was a painful loss, but I’m super proud of how the boys bounced back with a really good four-quarter performance against a quality team like Beacy.” Davey kicked three goals and praised the efforts of centre-half back Jake Blackwood and Will Smith, who kicked two, while the midfield dominance of Russ Gabriel, Sam Raru, and the dynamic Battle, held the home side in good stead throughout the course of the evening. The Doves take on a confident Narre Warren this Saturday night after the Magpies kept their double-chance hopes alive with an 82-point victory over Pakenham at Toomuc Reserve. The Magpies had 17 scoring shots to nil in the opening term, kicking 6.11 to 0.0 to lead by 47 points at the first break. The Lions responded with a five goal-to-one second quarter, cutting the gap to 22, before the Magpies ran away with a 12-goal second half. Aaron Wilson kicked six for the winners and Nick Scanlon, five, while midfielder Josh Tonna produced his third best-on-ground performance on the trot. Pakenham midfielder Steve O’Bryan

The run and carry of Reece Piper gave Berwick the edge in a tough contest against Picture: ROB CAREW Tooradin at Edwin Flack Reserve. 171302 was taken to hospital to mend a nasty cut to his forehead after head-collision with Magpie Luke Cody in the second quarter. In other games, Mat Jones and skipper Matt Clarke kicked five goals each in Officer’s 167-point victory over Hampton Park, while Berwick overcame a brave Tooradin effort to down the Seagulls by five goals at Edwin Flack Reserve.

The Gulls closed to seven points early in the final term before the run and carry of Reece Piper turned the game on its head. Piper kicked two goals in the last quarter from half back, capping of an eye-catching display. Michael Johnson did a great job on Tooradin dangerman Andrew Dean while the classy Nick Lang kicked four for the Seagulls. Cranbourne had the bye.

Two on trot for resurgent Doves By David Nagel To back up one great performance with another is the sign of a very, very dangerous sporting team, and Doveton has earned that reputation after defeating Beaconsfield at Robinson Oval on Saturday night. The 57-50 Doves victory is impressive in its own right - but add to last week’s triumph over then topof-the-table Tooradin, and things start getting a lot more serious. Doves coach Liz Edwards believes a lethal combination of youth and experience is the main ingredient behind her side's late-season resurgence. “The girls are really motivated at the moment, and coming back from VNL and rep competitions means they’re growing as netballers,” Edwards said. “Chelsea (Imanisani), Hayley (Stewart) and Mel (Webster) are young ones playing great netball, and when we put experience beside them it really helps. It’s just a nice mix at the moment, but it’s important we don’t get ahead of ourselves and take it one week at a time.” Not surprisingly, Doveton started the better, carrying their form from last week’s win over the Seagulls, compared to an Eagles outfit coming off a lethargic performance against ROC. The Doves led 16-10 at the first break, with gun-goaler Rahni Samason (goal shooter) capitalising on the great work of midcourters Akanisi Seeto (wing defence), Linda Hunt (wing attack) and Stewart (centre). Imanisani (goal attack) was proving a great foil for Samason, while Vanessa San Jose (goal keeper) and Webster (goal defence) were making life difficult for the Eagles goalers. But Beacy, as good teams do, hit back hard in the second term.

The swap of Ash Gill (WA to C) and Rylee Nelson (C to WA) through the midcourt had an instant impact, with the Eagles scoring 17-13 in the second term and cutting the margin to just two at half-time. Doveton extended the lead narrowly in the third and took a three-goal advantage into the last quarter. Samason kept her nerve in the dying stages, shooting 13 last-quarter goals against quality defenders in Dani Cameron (GK) and Brit Tyers (GD), while Webster was superb in defence. Narre Warren made it 11 consecutive victories with a classy and convincing 72-31 victory over Pakenham at Toomuc Reserve. The Magpies dominated the first term, scoring 21-5, before driving home that advantage with an 18-4 second quarter. The Magpies stars were all in ripping nick, with Corrina Emery (GD) and Tracey Dell (GK) taking care of the defensive end of the court while Tayla Shannon (GA) and Gabby Dwyer (GS) were all class in attack. Lions defenders Keely Wright, Jenna Douglas and Amelia McCarthy did well against a torrent of quality supply. ROCs record reads two wins and a draw from its last five games after the Kangaroos won a low-scoring contest, 30-25, against Hampton Park at Robert Booth Reserve. Defenders were right on top on Saturday, with Karli Foster (GD) and Brooke Kiely (GK) terrific for the Redbacks, while Laura Quinn (GD) and Mel Overdyk (GK) played their part for the Roos. The Redbacks led by a goal at half-time, but an 18-12 score-line in the second half lifted the Kangas to their fourth victory for the season. And Tooradin has bounced back to the winners list with a fast-starting 48-27 victory over Berwick at Edwin Flack Reserve.

The defensive efforts of Tooradin’s Bec Kinna allowed Berwick just six goals in the first half at Edwin Flack Reserve on Saturday. 171302 Picture: ROB CAREW The Seagulls were focused and frugal before half-time, allowing the Wickers just three goals in each of the first two quarters. Defenders Jess Maher (GK) and Bec Kinna (GD) will take the accolades, but the midcourt efforts of Emma Iacovou (C), Jess Cox (WA) and Ebony Dolan (WD) cut down the Wickers

supply to zilch. This one threatened to get ugly at half-time, but the Wickers lifted in the second half with players like Emily Pratt (WA), Sarah Nash (WA) and Bec Langford (GD) showing some real pride in the colours. Cranbourne had the bye.

Back in the fold By Nick Creely

AFL great and 350-gamer Doug Hawkins was the starring attraction at GARFIELD on Saturday for the club s sponsors, life members and Star Club day. Hawkins, pictured here talking about his short-lived stint as a member of the Palmer United Party, drew plenty of laughs from those in attendance, who also had the opportunity to bid on a FOOTSCRAY Team of the Century jumper. Hawkins, long known to be one of the AFL s great blokes, lived up to that reputation after the function too gladly posing for photos with anyone who asked. 171307 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS

The Frankston Football Club will return to the VFL in 2018 after having its licence application granted by AFL Victoria last week. The club presented a strong case for a return to the VFL to AFL Victoria Board and Executive representatives on 24 July, with a focus on re-establishing its important role in developing the talent pathway in the south-east region, but also on a long-term management and finan-

cial plan for the club. “AFL Victoria was always committed to continuing to work with key stakeholders in the region - including Frankston FC - to ensure there would be a state-league presence there into the future,” AFL Victoria CEO Steven Reaper said in a media release. “The Frankston FC and all involved have shown their commitment to regain their licence in the VFL, establishing a strong strategic plan focused on governance,

community engagement, sponsorship and membership that will assist the club and the region into the future.” The Stingrays - who have been involved in a long and fruitful partnership with Frankston - are set to be the main TAC Cup club to benefit from the reinstatement of the Dolphins’ VFL licence. Stingrays coach Craig Black is thrilled to have Frankston back in the VFL competition.

“One thing it does do is give our TAC Cup kids an option - a lot of our boys go to Casey, and now there’s another opportunity for the kids who live down south,” he said. “It’s exciting for our area and for our young men to get an opportunity if they don’t get drafted to go back and ply their trade for a couple of years. “It’s just a good result for everyone.”

Beaconsfield’s St Francis Xavier Saints FIDA football team is moving ahead in leaps and bounds, as evidenced by the levels some of its incredible playing talent is reaching. The Victorian FIDA (Football Integration Development Association) Football League exists to provide Victorians with an intellectual disability the opportunity to participate in Aussie Rules at a competitive level. The Saints are this year playing in the Division 4 competition and are focusing firmly on skill development and participation, and each of their players love their involvement with the club. One such player is Shaun Doll, who is new to the club this season. The Saints recently nominated him to try out for the AFL Vic Metro FIDA team earlier this year and not only did he make it through the selection process, he recently took part in the National Inclusion Carnival in Queensland in what was a fantastic personal achievement and one the Saints were supremely proud of. Vic Metro claimed its third straight Inclusion Carnival title after defeating AFL NSW/ACT in the grand final by 53 points on the Gold Coast, 9.7 (61) to 1.2 (8). Metro piled on seven goals in the second half to race away with another title.

A great Benz for the coming springtime. will be joined in Australia by the redhot AMG GT R Coupe. The demonstration session of this 430kW/700Nm AMG monster set a new production car record of two minutes 16.5 seconds during the weekend of the 12-hour race at Mount Panorama in February 2017. Open-top enjoyment is made comfortable by a ‘draught stop’ wind deflector and heated seats.

A 10-speaker Burmester surround sound system and Mercedes' COMAND Online multimedia system add to the package The AMG GT C Roadster not only delivers more output and torque (410kW and 680Nm), it also impresses with numerous technical highlights from the AMG GT R Coupé for even more dynamic performance. Like the AMG GT R, the AMG GT

C Roadster is recognisable by its wide, muscular rear end and large wheels. Other technical measures include active rear axle steering. Positioned between the AMG GT S and AMG GT R Coupe models, the AMG GT C Roadster incorporates standard features including AMG Performance seats and steering wheel, both in nappa leather. Again on the comfort side, it has

heated and ventilated seats as well as AirScarf neck level heating. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the the high-performance AMG organisation, now called Mercedes-AMG, a special ‘Edition 50’ version of the newly arrived AMG GT C Coupe has been created. It features the AMG interior Night Package, Edition 50 detailing in the head restraints and steering wheel bezel, quilted nappa leather upholstery, AMG trim elements in black chrome, LED high performance headlamps and black chromed exterior highlights. It sits on either 19 or 20-inch AMG cross-spoke forged wheels and a choice of two ‘designo’ paint colours - graphite grey magno or cashmere white magno. The enlarged and enhanced Mercedes-AMG GT range is scheduled to arrive downunder in October. To test drive the Mercedes inquire at Mercedes Benz Berwick, 518 Princes Highway, Berwick. Just in time for the southern spring, Mercedes-AMG will import its highperformance GT in open-top Roadster format. In a traditional manner it uses a soft top - a high quality, triple layer fabric roof. This stores neatly using a Z-fold arrangement behind the seats. The roof can be opened and closed in just 11 seconds at speeds of up to 50 km/h. Like the existing AMG GT Coupe, the GT Roadster has a powerful V8 front mid-engine. A torque tube connects the engine to an AMG seven-speed transaxle at the rear for a close to perfect weight distribution of 47:53 per cent. Revisions to the engine will be seen not only in the Roadster but also added to the Coupe. The AMG GT Coupe gains 10 kW (to 350 kW) of power and 30 Nm to (630 Nm). The AMG GT S Coupe received an extra 9 kW (to 384 W) and 20 Nm (to 670 Nm). In an interesting facelift adds the ‘Panamericana grille’ along with styling enhancements to the front apron and air intakes. It certainly looks different. The standard Mercedes-AMG GTs (if ‘standard’ is the right description…)
