MORE TO LOVE The editor’s desk What’s happening with our koalas? Next week the council is expected to make a decision on its Koala Conservation Plan to ensure the future population of the much-loved wildlife. As their habitat diminishes, koalas are residing more often on privatelyowned properties and needing to meet the challenges that come with human habitation. Car hits, dog attacks, disease and tackling fences are major obstacles to koalas’ survival. In June Koala Action Group coordinator Michelle Daly attended the second National Koala Conference. One message that stood out for her at the conference was that to ensure the survival of koalas we need to hone in on source populations and focus on holding these - focus our efforts on areas of habitat that support the remaining populations, and put our conservation and planning efforts into these important populations, to help the recovery and long-term viability of koalas in our region. She said the utimate goal was to have healthy, breeding and connected populations of koalas in 100 years. ●

THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT… FESTA BACK UNDER TOURISM ROOF Tourism Noosa announced on Monday it will be running the Noosa Food and Wine Festival in 2018 taking over from the 2017 Event Organisers, Under One Roof. Tourism Noosa’s Chairman Steve McPharlin says Tourism Noosa has made the decision to resume management of the event and is optimistic that, with the support of Noosa’s food and tourism industry it will grow the event to new heights. “We thank the team from Under One Roof for their efforts in the delivery of the 2017 festival and wish them all the best in their future ventures,” he said. Maria Crews from Under One Roof said that her team was proud of the results delivered for the 2017 Festival, which delivered a significant step change on the 2016 Festival. Steve said next year’s event, which will take place from 17-20 May, will continue to build on the new format of the festival introduced in 2016 and 2017 by collaborating with Noosa restaurants, visiting chefs and hosting events in key Noosa locations. “Noosa has long been known as one of Australia’s leading food destinations and Tourism Noosa will ensure this reputation is protected and enhanced,” he said. “Tourism Noosa is excited to work with key partners to deliver a successful festival for Noosa in 2018 and beyond.” The festival program will be released via www.noosafoodandwine.com.au in the coming months. ●
EROSION GONE TO THE DOGS Noosa Council will next week decide on measures including dredging to reduce erosion at Noosa Dog Beach, the sand dune that sits between the Noosa River mouth and Noosa Sound. The proposed measures include a survey to determine sand lost to erosion and application of dredging permits from the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection (EHP). In conjunction with the permit process, council will call tenders for dredging and nourishment works at this site under the canal operational budget. Council plans to update the Noosa River flood model in relation to the changed conditions and assess solutions for remediation in 2017'18. Council says changes to the Noosa River

mouth and the erosion of the sandbar running adjacent to Dog Beach has led to the shoreline receding 11 metres in the past year, 80 per cent of which occurred in the past few months. As a result of the erosion there has been consequent undermining of trees and pathways along the beach. A number of complaints have been made to Noosa Council regarding the erosion and safety concerns about falling trees and vertical sand scarps. In 2012 a geotextile sand container groyne and submerged training wall was constructed to redirect water flows away from the beach and reduce erosion and sand was placed along the beach to form a sandbar. The sandbar has reduced in size over the past 12 months and a channel has returned running adjacent to the Dog Beach. ● - Margaret Maccoll
RUBBISH SERVICE GETS GRILLED Noosa Council says it is attempting to obtain information from Visy on the handling of its recycled items after revelations on ABC Four Corners Monday night the company was dumping recycled material in landfill. Mayor Tony Wellington said the council pays Visy a fee to take sorted recycled waste from the Materials Recovery Facility at Bli Bli where it is trucked after being collected by council’s kerbside yellow lid bin service. “The council has no authority under the contract to direct Visy regarding the handling and final use of these materials,” the mayor said.
Cr Wellington said as owner of the Eumundi-Noosa Road landfill and resource recovery centre, Noosa Council enforced tight controls over the site. “We do not have interstate waste being dumped at our landfill. In fact, our Towards Zero Waste initiative commits the council to both reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill and increasing our recycling efforts,” he said. He said recycling at the resource recovery centre on Eumundi-Noosa Road included garden waste which is mulched and made available free of charge to the public. Cr Wellington said residents should continue to divert recyclable materials from the general waste stream. ● 201721004-LB21-17

COVER STORY Kerry Sorensen with his book Bush to Beach.
PENCIL
WRITES HIS NAME BY RON LANE
I
t was in the early summer of 1967 that lifesavers of the Noosa Club, on an early Saturday morning, spotted what they described as two cowboys sitting on the rock wall to the left of the clubhouse. Wearing big sombreros, check shirts, jeans and riding boots and with bed rolls between their boots, they sat quietly talking. Later in the morning they approached the club and after identifying themselves as the Duggan brothers, Tommy and Liam, they quietly asked to speak to someone in charge. Little did we realize that the conversation that followed was to be the start of what to become one of the true legendary periods in the history of the Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club - the Murgon-Wondai Invasion. With the surf club doors securely opened by these new members, the Duggan Brothers (with the third brother Tim to join a year later) the Murgon-Wondai boys started to join. Then in 1969 among the new boys was a young skinny kid named Kerry Sorensen who was tall and incredible thin - so thin, in fact, that he soon became known as Pencil. Now some 49 years on he is still a member and still known as Pencil but above all he is now a Kerry Sorensen Life Member. An honour well earned. Situated some 50km west of Gympie, this farming and cattle district, known as South Burnett, was to be the provider of many young men who were destined to become proud patrolling members of the Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club and in all reality it could have not have come at a better time. “The club was in desperate need of new members,” Kerry said, “so now, when we sometimes get together for a few quite drinks, we jokingly refer to ourselves as the boys from the bush that saved the Noosa Surf Club from going under.” Now this Saturday, 12 August, many of these now middle aged old boys, along with others, will assemble at the Noosa Club to celebrate their 50 years since the start of what can only be described as a fantastic, exciting and somewhat different period in the history of the club. Two other Murgon members who, along with Kerry, have received the club’s highest honour of Life Member, Tim Irvine and Mike Horner will be in attendance. Members such as Murtagh, Postle, Mickan the Duggans and Mills, just to name a few, will also be present.

Members of the South Burnett contingent who joined the club in the 1960s. and downstairs a kitchen, dining room and toilet block with showers. “Meals for juniors cost 10c and for seniors 50c and we were always rostered to prepare the meals. “All our money was raised by chook raffles at the reef and house to house collections in Brisbane and Noosa. “All this plus patrols kept us busy. Discipline on patrols and in the clubhouse was strict. Any serious violation of patrolling or clubhouse rules and they wouldn’t hesitate they would throw you out. This created a very strong united club - all doing their bit.” After obtaining his bronze and learning to handle the long hours of travel every weekend, Kerry soon started to

show his true colours. After several seasons he was appointed to the position of club Vice-Captain. Then moving further up the ladder he was voted club Vice President and finally when the position of President became vacant he was elected to office. However in the year 2003 came one of his biggest honours when he was awarded the prestigious Lobban Cup. This is the most prestigious award any member in Noosa can receive. To do this the member has to stand head and shoulders above all others. When nominated all aspects of his club life (except competition) comes under scrutiny; if no one is seen as eligible the Cup is not awarded. Other achievements include Secretary of the Supporters club and President of the Old Boys Association. But perhaps Kerry’s greatest achievement came in 2003 with the publication of Noosa’s official club history, Bush to Beach. Written by Robert Longhurst, this hard back publication was well received and provides documented records of the Noosa years, right from 1928 to the present time. From start to finish it was Kerry’s project and the club will be forever grateful. The title, which he instigated, is indeed appropriate not just because of the Murgon-Wondai period, but because from the very start it was definitely a country boys club. When on Saturday the bushies who rallied to save the Noosa Club gather for their reunion and a well-earned drink, their hair may be grey but their memories will be forever young and standing among them, Kerry Pencil Sorensen Life Member will take pride in their achievements and remember forever their mateship and, above all, their loyalty. ●

Despite coming from the bush, a lot of the boys were members of the very strong Murgon Swimming Club, so not only did the club get a lot of new members but also members who were top swimmers. On receiving their bronze medallions they quickly fitted into the patrol routine with some, including Kerry, moving on to the Jet Rescue Boat Service as either drivers or crewies. Others moved into the carnival life of surf sports. “Our biggest problem was, of course, distance. To drive from Murgon was something like three hours,” Kerry said, “so we had to pool our car resources. “Then, with so many of the boys getting their bronze, the people of Murgon got behind us and, along with some of the fathers and businessman, chipped in and bought us an old electrician’s van. “At the time I worked at a place called Clifton Motors so I would service it and fill it up; on the trip home with a van full of blokes we paid a $1 each for fuel. “Also the driver never drank and the van was painted in the club colours - white with a big wide red stripe down the centre of the roof and down the back. “To give some of the boys comfort one of the fathers donated a king size mattress which we sat on for the trip. “However on Saturday nights we went to the Noosa Drive In and the driver would hide us under the mattress so we got in for nothing. “But this came to an end when our club captain Laney got a phone call suggesting that the driver would be well advised to leave the mattress back at the clubhouse. “For us bushies, life at the club was good; a big dormitory upstairs which could bunk some 30 members in a pinch

NEWS IT'S JUST NOT ON Noosaville-Tewantin police beat Senior Constable Steve Fitzpatrick said police regularly patrolled this beach in marked and unmarked vehicles. “Foolhardy driving such as figure eights, donuts and dune climbing is just not tolerated,” he said. “While police are tolerant of novice beach drivers and their subsequent apprehensiveness, we will not tolerate dangerous driving, hooning and recklessness. “Fines of more than $1000 are now applicable for certain offences and the offending vehicle could be seized under the Queensland Government’s anti-hooning legislation.” ●

Its next meeting is 13 August at 10am in Victory Park, Lorikeet Drive, Peregian Beach. PBCA was formed over 20 years ago, prevented high rise at South Peregian and advocated successfully to have south Peregian become part of Noosa Shire. INQUIRY DRAWS THE LINE ON SHARK NETS The Senate Inquiry chaired by Greens senator Peter Whish-Wilson into shark mitigation and deterrence measures in Queensland waters last week heard from Sunshine Coast marine scientist Chad Buxton and shark advocate Tony Isaacson. The senator said a range of researchers and community members raised concerns “about the archaic practices being used in Queensland in the name of community safety, where there is no evidence that drum lines or shark nets make swimmers and surfers safe, yet there is a lot of evidence of the damage they do to whales, dolphins and turtles.” Chad Buxton told the inquiry that since the program (of netting and drum
lines) was implemented in Queensland in 1962 reports showed 84,000 sharks, whales, dolphins and turtles had been killed. The member of Coolum and North Shore Coast Care was most concerned about the critically endangered grey nurse shark. “There’s a population of 500 to 1500 left in Queensland. In the last 15 years 23 have been caught on the Sunshine Coast, most on Rainbow Beach in nets. These are breeding adults. Only one lost is too many in this critically endangered species,” he said. Tony Isaacson of DiveCareDare told the inquiry that sharks were not only essential for healthy land and water, they were good for tourism. He also highlighted the effectiveness of new technology in detecting and warning of sharks and the
ineffectiveness of the current program. CLEVER BUOY is a smart ocean buoy that uses technology to detect sharks by recognising their unique movement and sends instant alerts to lifeguards via the Optus Network. He said tests with the smart technology devices with bull sharks in the Bahamas have shown 100 per cent success and it was effective in low light and extreme weather conditions when other measures were not. Last Thursday Tony swam under and between the shark nets to demonstrate their inability to stop sharks. “Many of the sharks that are caught in nets are on their way out to the open ocean after they have foraged for food on the bottom near the surf zone and in the gutters,” he said. The Queensland Government did not appear at the inquiry. ●

The good thing is we can do something about that.” Dr Ralph has walked bushlands following fires, destruction paths following cyclones and roadsides to treat injured. He advised the carers to be aware of the dangers of any situation. “I’ve lost at least one friend whose been smashed on the road while caring for wildlife,” he said. The day-long workshop was attended by all Wildlife Volunteers Association (WILVOS) carers. WILVOS chair Sylvia Whiting said education was of such importance to carers the organisation regularly organised training and covered the costs.

Rachel Aspinall and Rebecca Armstrong brought their joeys along. Wildlife carer Rachel Aspinall brought along a red-necked kangaroo joey, named Karlie, and a wallaby joey called Gemma. Both had been in their mothers’ pouches when the mothers were struck by cars and killed. One incident was on the KenilworthEumundi Road and the other in Hervey Bay. “Luckily someone looked in the pouch,” she said. The young macropods require fourhourly feeds. Karlie was pink, without fur and weighed only 150gm when she arrived. She is now over 2kg and will stay with Rachel for 18 months until she is released. Gemma will stay for about 13 months. Baby possums and wallabies accompanied more than 100 wildlife carers who came from across the Sunshine Coast for a training day with one of Australia’s leading wildlife veterinarians Dr Howard Ralph. Dr Ralph is a medical doctor, anaesthetist and veterinarian who operates the Southern Cross wildlife clinic and hospital. “I treat everybody. I make no differentiation between one species or another. The same principles apply to all species,” he said. Dr Ralph told carers the assessment of sick or injured wildlife was a critical and ongoing step in determining the outcome for sick or injured wildlife. “You may be called out in the night to an urgent situation. Often you’re the first responder. The wildlife may be dehydrated, cold, bleeding. Maybe it can’t breathe. It might have been hit by a car and have fractures,” he said. “I’ve seen some horror and not all accidental. There’s some cruelty out there.” Dr Ralph said immobilising fractured limbs or wings, keeping wildlife contained to reduce further injury and pain relief were among important measures. “Thirty years ago people thought they’re wildlife they don’t feel pain,” he said. “We know that’s not true. Due to the perfect weather, police anticipated high crowds camping and lots of day trippers. The vast majority of visitors were fantastic - however police had to issue a multitude of tickets for unrestrained passengers, speeding, people sitting on laps, unregistered motor vehicles and four for drink driving. A 26-year-old truck driver from Ningi was charged with driving a motor vehicle without due care and attention when police caught him drifting the vehicle and performing a series of donuts and figure eights on the sand. He won’t be driving the vehicle for the next 90 days and faces court next month. A 50-year-old site foreman also faces the Noosa magistrate next month for drink driving and driving a vehicle without the required interlock device fitted. He returned a reading of .081 per cent at 11.30 in the morning. ●

He said the next seniors forum to be held next year would discuss cost of living issues. ●

Noosa Council will next week decide whether to call for Expressions of interest to manage the Cooroy RV Stopover after it made a loss on the site last year. The stopover was established in 2015 at 17 Mary River Road to address an identified need to cater for RV travellers, but the site’s location within the floodplain of Cooroy Creek and close to industrial premises constrains its development potential. Council said the accommodation market had changed and a private facility at nearby 154 Holts Road operating as the Cooroy No Worries RV Stop received about 80 per cent occupancy and good customer feedback. The council-run site had 1607 visitor nights in the 2016-’17 year at $10 a night. Council said running costs were $8,800, the manager’s retainer was $18,250 and commission $8030 resulting in a loss for council of $19,015. Council said potential management submitters had already been identified and would be notified of the EOI. The current management agreement expires in December. ●

Seniors called for a review of legislation and the introduction of a national contract for retirement villages when they attended a forum at Twin Waters last week with Federal Aged Care Minister Ken Wyatt. About 150 seniors from across the Sunshine Coast attended the forum organised by Fairfax MP Ted O’Brien. Residents identified multiply problems with retirement villages they wanted addressed. They said there were too many lease models with too much complexity. Contracts should be simpler and more flexible, they said - and calls were made to nationalise retirement village contracts. There needs to be a review of exit fees, reinstatements and refurbishments as transition costs are prohibitive, they said. The seniors said a review done 10 years ago had done nothing to change the situation. In 2007 a review was undertaken by a Federal Parliamentary Committee and a report written which recommended: * Federal, state and territory consumer protection ministers look at whether a statutory supervisor would be appropriate. * Federal, state and territory attorneys-general look at how they could harmonise legislation. * And the ACCC and state and territory fair trading offices form a working party to examine the nature of retirement village contracts, including reviewing all aspects of exit fees and other fees including whether they should be abolished. Senator Wyatt said he would discuss the matter with Minister for Small Business Michael McCormack but legislation governing retirement villages was a state government responsibility. Maroochydore MP Fiona Simpson who also attended the forum said the Retirement Village Act needed to be addressed in a review. “There needs to be a rewrite of the act and it needs to be done urgently,” she said. The seniors also discussed medical issues. They said

IT’S NONE OF OUR BUSINESS BUT … SNAKES FIGHT FOR LOVE Walking her Labrador about 8.30am on Monday morning on The Esplanade in Sunshine Beach, Caroline Cresswell saw two large carpet pythons. The snakes were wound around each other, their heads more than a metre off the ground and swaying two and fro. At first Caroline thought they were mating but a snake catcher told her they were actually in combat - fighting to impress a female. Spring is here. ●

SITE IS WELL GROOMED A website geared to the groom has begun in Noosa to bring about some equality in the wedding industry. Begun by Paradise Arcade Noosa head chef Glen Tilly and his wife, wedding celebrant Kath, Groomology is the first of its kind.
Kath said she has always believed a wedding day should be just as much about the groom as it is about the bride. “After all it is his day too and these days more and more guys are wanting to be more involved in the wedding planning process but just don’t know how to go about it,” she said. “We made something just for them with
only the information they need to know in the one place ... without all the fluff.” The website promotes itself as a “no BS wedding resource for the modern groom” and in its first week gained 2000 hits. For more information visit groomology. com.au ●

NEWS SHOW HOLIDAY PROPOSED
THE FACE OF COURAGE
Council has proposed the show holiday for Noosa Shire in 2018 will be Friday 7 September and the date will be made official at the ordinary meeting on 17 August. The Noosa Country Show has traditionally been held annually on the second weekend in September but this year is an anomaly with the show being held on the third weekend due to a direction by the Queensland Chamber of Agricultural Societies. For 2018, the Noosa Country Show is proposed for 7-8 September. ●
Janet Kake, 53, has been diagnosed with breast cancer three times. The Eumundi resident was first diagnosed with cancer at 33-years-of-age and lastly three years ago. “The first time I was diagnosed, I only went to see the doctor because I had a pain under my arm - luckily, he was very experienced and sent me for a mammogram straight away,” she said. “My most recent diagnosis came only two weeks after I had told my parents I had decided to have a double mastectomy. It was while I was going through that process that I was told I had cancer again.” Despite five surgeries and taxing treatments she regards her cancer experience as a gift. “Every time I had breast cancer I learnt more about myself and prioritised what was truly important, such as spending time with my children,” she said. In honour of her resilience, positivity and passion for raising awareness, Janet has been named the Face of the 2017 Sunshine Coast Walk For Women’s Cancers. The walk will be held on 2 September in Alexandra Headland to fund-raise for the Cancer Council Queensland. “I had a great network of friends and family which made all the difference; the reason I like to fund-raise and spread the word about the Cancer Council’s work is because I know not everyone is as lucky to have that strong support base,” she said. “If by sharing my story someone is more vigilant and learns to listen to their body, it will be worth it, as early diagnosis gives a better chance of survival. “My message to people is to take the fear out of the disease, by informing yourself and getting checked.” To register for the 3km or 6km Sunshine Coast Walk For Women’s Cancers visit cancerqld.org.au/ walkforwomenscancers or call 1300 65 65 85. ●
KERBSIDE WASTE GONE AND GREEN BINS ON THEIR WAY This year’s kerbside collection involved the collection of more than 1000 tonnes of material which was greater than last year’s collection and included 32 tonnes of recycled metal. Council said for the first time, e-waste and reusable goods were recycled during the kerbside collection and the mattress collection service was well used. Council said a significant amount of wasted did not meet collection criteria including prohibited items and excessive volumes and cost council an extra $28,000. In addition council is expecting to deliver the new green bins in the last two weeks of August. To date 121 exemption requests have been approved out of 173 requests from residents whose premises are less than 400 square metres in area, or where a gardening contractor undertakes to collect and recycle all garden waste from the premises. ●

TRY THIS … Cook up a storm
COOK LIKE A PRO IN KITCHEN TO GO BY HOLLIE HARRIS As an average cook at best, whose only knack in the kitchen is burn things, I trotted off to cooking school. I literally went to class for the day and learned how to cook. This was no ordinary class room though - state-of-the-art kitchens and equipment- with the very gifted Zeb Gilbert from Wasabi, sharing his endless knowledge of all things culinary to our small group of seven gave me the assurance that I would be taking home with me some mad cooking skills. The Cooking School Noosa is nestled in beside the Noosa River in Quamby Place, and they offer a wide range of classes to suit your needs led by Wasabi Restaurant chefs or guest chefs from all over the country. My favourite style of cooking is Asian, without a doubt, so the Modern South East Asian class was right up my alley. The table was piled high with fresh pickings from Honeysuckle Hill Farm as Wasabi and The Cooking School Noosa believe in paddock to plate food tastes best and is responsible to the planet as well as our local economy. The endless fountain of knowledge of owner and executive chef Zeb Gilbert was worth its weight in gold. He chatters along the way, throwing out tips that blew me away every time. I learned how to bone fish, section a chicken, make a curry paste from scratch, smoke fish and most importantly I learned who to use every single piece of meat off the bone of chicken or a fish, including the frame. I learned how to make my own real ice cream, fresh stocks, roll dumplings and how to plate up a variety of foods. The list goes on, but you get the drift. Zeb is made for this stuff. He is as passionate about teaching it as he is committed to being sustainable and mindful of how we buy and cook. “When using fish, spread the love. Use different fish to keep sustainable. If we all buy the big fish all of the time, it throws things off balance. We have a huge variety of great fish in our local region,” Zeb says. The seven of us worked together to create a menu that scared us all in the beginning, to say the least. Each process is broken down so simply and with everything at our finger tips and expert help on hand, every dish with perfection.
Ready to create with fresh produce of their very own farm - Honeysuckle Hill Farm in the Hinterland. a doubt, this was a food moment that would last a lifetime, surrounded by the most exquisite azure waters and fish swimming below we sat and indulged in our creations. We rolled out of school with the fullest bellies and pocket loads of knowledge and a huge sense of accomplishment that we nailed everything on that table to perfection. The Cooking School Noosa is hosting a range of classes coming up - Classic French is on this Sunday, then there will be Dumplings and Buns, Artisanal Bread Making, Contemporary Japanese. Jump online at www. noosacookingschool.com to find out dates. This is something everyone should experience. I have my eyes on the Japanese class ... or the breads ... ●
Our task was to make Spanner crab and pork dumplings in a star anise and ginger broth, smoked fish with sichuan pickled cucumber salad, Massaman curry with fragrant rice and monkey ear mushrooms with seasonal greens. The decadent palm sugar and coconut tarts were almost played up by the most beautiful orange and cardamom ice cream. After hours of kitchen hustle and bustle, loads of laughs and plenty of excitement and noise, we sat over the glistening water of Noosa River. The silky sake warmed our bellies and we breathed in the feast of food before us. The flavours were out of this world. Sweet, salty, sour, hot, cool - it was all there. Balanced and delicate, every bite was a truly special moment and we all fell silent. Without

NO VILIFICATION Sydney Evans, I have no wish to vilify you however there are some points in your letter (NT 3 August), that require a reply. You mention that the council did not have a referendum prior to making their stance known, in support of same-sex marriage. Yet in 2004, the then PM John Howard did not have a referendum when he arbitrarily changed the marriage act from the original section in the Marriage Act of 1961. Prior to the Marriage Amendment Act, there was no definition of marriage in the 1961 Act. He then changed it to marriage means the union of a man and a woman to the exclusion of all others. You mention that children of same sex couples will ... “go without the stabilising influences of a mum or a dad." In 2015, the divorce rate in Australia was equivalent to one in three couples. And given that we are yet to legalise same-sex marriage ... well, you get my drift.

You have mentioned that true marriage has been around for thousands of years. I wonder what you mean by that. From just a simple Google search, it is easy to see what true marriage has been like. For instance, child marriage was common throughout history, even up until the 1900s in the United States in the state of Delaware, the age of consent for marriage was seven years old. Still, in 2017, over half of the 50 United States have no explicit minimum age to marry and several states set the age as low as 14. And I make an assumption here that you would believe that 'true marriage’ is the monogamous kind. Seems you’re wrong there. Monogamy may seem central to marriage now, but in fact, polygamy was common throughout history. From Jacob, to kings David and Solomon, biblical men often had anywhere from two to thousands of wives. And you only have to study the papacy in the Borgia period from the mid-1400s to see how marriage was political and about power and riches, nothing to do with 'true marriage’. And for myself? I actually don’t believe in marriage in any sense. However if the law of the land discriminates against same-sex couples as it does now in the Marriage Act, I believe it should be changed with a free vote in parliament. But true equality will be achieved when we see the first same-sex divorce in the Family Court. Brett Richards, Peregian Springs.
A SHOCKING THEFT I dropped off several bags of clothing, linen and shoes all in good condition to the hospice charity shop in Cooroy. Unfortunately the shop is closed on Thursday unbeknownst to myself. I went out to have lunch only to see my goods had been stolen. Shoes left but the other items stolen.
Thursday, 10 August, 2017
My God. Really ... who would steal items that potentially help to service the dying? Whoever did this may your conscience never rest. Unbelievable. N. Dewhirst , Cooroy.
WILL AND A WAY Saddened to hear of Garth Prowd’s passing. He has been in our thoughts since hearing the news and it reminded me of a time several years ago when my wife and I were chatting with Garth at Noosa Main Beach. My wife Charmaine had recently broken her leg in three places skiing in the states. She was comparing scars with Garth who had broken his leg in his younger days. He told how on being discharged from hospital on crutches with full leg cast, his mates took him to a nearby pub for a few celebratory beers. During the afternoon he left his mates to find a toilet which was down a long flight of stairs. Up to this time he had no cause to go up or down stairs in crutches. He said “how hard could this be" and started down. By the time he had bounced to the bottom, he had cracked the cast, rebroken his leg and had to be readmitted to hospital. He told the story with deprecating good humour. To me it epitomises the man who was always willing to have a go and faced life challenges head-on. Bob McCormick, Noosaville.
GREEN-LEFT IDEOLOGY Noosa citizens be afraid - be very afraid when we are told our Noosa mayor is investing half a million dollars of your money into a ‘green-left ideology’ partnership with Professor Tim Flannery. Readers will remember every one of Flannery’s totally wrong predictions such as his
‘guaranteed’ permanent Australian drought and our dams certain running dry to never fill again; demanding immediate government borrowing of billions of dollars to build desalination plants each which today cost over half a million dollars a day, on standby, while delivering zero potable water to its community. Following Flannery’s catastrophic projections, the dam built for Brisbane flood mitigation, was changed in function to water storage and, when the rains came, the overfilled dam failed in its intended function and unnecessarily flooded Brisbane. It is disturbing that this man appears to have no shame as he has neither publicly admitted to his gigantic errors nor apologised to Australia for the damage he has caused and has the cheek to preach to Australia on matters about which he knows nothing and presents his nonsense as science. In this context, we have this pair of leftgreen ideologues telling us of the need to ‘reduce emissions’ - the English translation being “reduce the carbon dioxide generated by man” with the irrational objective for Noosa to reached “zero emissions by 2026” - no street lights - off to bed when the sun goes down and then ‘stop breathing’ - true Orwellian ‘eco-tourism’ - follow this insanity and we are on the road to economic suicide in slow-motion - tell your councillors to focus on real council business and stop wasting ratepayers’ money and leave the crazy stuff to Tim and his UN mates. As an example of the dangers, the present energy crisis and your skyrocketing electricity bills is just one manifestation of implementation of the United Nations Paris Accord, Agenda 2030, that Tim and Tony are promoting. AGENTS TO GAIN HIGH-TECH EDGE THE Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) is helping agents get ahead of the curve and learn more about how technology is going to shape the real estate landscape. The REIQ is bringing the latest technology trends and products relevant to the Queensland real estate market to its inaugural Real TECH Conference with the hope of arming agents will the tech know-how they need to stay on top. REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella said the latest innovations and technological advances that had direct application to the real estate market would be available for conference visitors to touch and experience for themselves. “We want to bring the technology to
our members, we want to put it in their hands and help them get ready for the future by showing them what’s possible and how technology can help them be more productive, more profitable and ultimately more successful,” she said. “Technology moves at a dizzying pace and keeping up with the latest advances that are relevant to you can be challenging, so we wanted to help our members by putting them in a room with the leaders in this field so they could talk to them and get real insights into what the future holds.” Ms Mercorella said the REIQ have brought some of the best thinkers to the Real TECH stage, such as the two scientists and futurists known as Future Crunch.
The REIQ wants to help agents learn more about technological advances that can help them work within the industry. “These guys are incredible and have some amazing ideas about where we’re all headed and how technology is going to get us there,” she said. “I’m looking forward to hearing from them.”
The Real TECH Conference will be held at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, on 30 August, and agents can find out more at www.reiq. com ●

ART
TUGS AT HEARTSTRINGS Noosa Open Studios is showing locals and tourists there’s more to Noosa than fantastic beaches, cafes and boutiques. As the name suggests, the event invites guests into the homes and worlds of artists living across the Noosa Shire. Spokeswoman Sarah Therese said the event, now in its second year, was a way for artists to meet the public, tell them what they do, how they gain their inspiration and perhaps sell them some art. Noosa Open Studios was created by established Noosa painter and sculptor Tricia Bradford. After running Tewantin’s Harbourside Gallery, Tricia gathered together some artists to find a way to bring people to the artists. “The artists are spread right across the Noosa Shire from Noosa Heads and Castaway Beach to Cooroy and right across the hinterland,” Sarah said. “There are all different sorts of art painting, photography, textile, ceramics. “It’s a lovely way for people, particularly if they’re tourists to see the region. “It gives them a good reason to get out and about and drive through the hinterland and see areas they may not have otherwise thought of going.” “Lots of the artists have creative spaces, and people can ask them about what they do and how they do their art.” Sarah said many artists held workshops throughout the year that people could find out about and be
involved in. There are 48 artists involved in Noosa Open Studios, and many have interesting lives outside their art. Rob Roy McKeown of Ringtail Creek spent many years teaching art to young people at risk and even taught for a time at Port Phillip prison in the maximum security section.
IT’S A LOVELY WAY FOR PEOPLE, PARTICULARLY IF THEY’RE TOURISTS TO SEE THE REGION. Painter and printmaker Michele Knightley of Boreen Point is a passionate environmentalist who uses her art to capture the local fauna and flora. Ceramicist Carol Watkins of Black Mountain is a State Emergency Services volunteer who, in 2014, was awarded the Minister’s cup for being the services member of the year. Sarah said Noosa Open Studios follows a tradition of other open studios in the US and Margaret River in Western Australia which have become significant events on the art calendar. Sponsored by Noosa Council and Tourism Noosa, the free event will be run from 18-20 August, and programs can be obtained from the Tourism Noosa office, Noosa Council and various galleries. Across (4) - A sign that helps find the answer. Down (5) - A suffix from Ancient Greek. Across (5) - Sculpture by Michelangelo. Down (5) Dictionary man from SBS’s “Letters & Numbers”. Lovers of the weekly crossword shouldn’t miss Cluetopia: The story of 100 years of the Crossword, by David Astle. It’s a masterpiece to be deciphered while readers are beguiled by the history of the black and white grid of boxes that have entertained and taught puzzlers for over a century. Each of its 100 chapters contains a hint to David’s giant crossword that is sure to stump the best. - Review by SuzAnne King, of Friends of Noosa Library ●
For a band that sounds like no other, three distinctly different albums on the trot is exceptional. On Run Kitty Run, The Bombay Royale dive further into their exotic influences, such as revisiting the nervous, rubbery funk of classic ’70s kung fu classics like Enter The Dragon. Bhediya could be an alternate James Bond theme - one where his vodka Martinis are heavily spiked - while the title track is pure joy and one of their niftiest earworms to date. This is loads of fun and a fun addition to any playlist. Time to get lost on another daring adventure through an imaginary Bollywood. ●
This one dropped to huge excitement Charlize spying on the Russians in 1989 Berlin with a pumping ’80s soundtrack. Tailor-made for the average child of the Cold War butting up uncomfortably against the reality of middle age, glasses and non-stop Islamic terrorism. Plot-wise, she’s seeking “the list” - the name of every double-agent in the battle of East vs West. If the Russians have it, it will fuel the Cold War for another 20 years or so. There are some high stakes ... but the simple truth is this: with a plot so convoluted that I swear I saw a quintuple-agent, this may be the moment the indomitable Charlize jumps the shark. ●

A DAY TO PLAY Local artists, Tania Nash and Toni Wills are conducting a workshop in Eumundi for budding writers and performers aged 13 to 17. ‘Play In A Day’ workshops set the challenge of devising, writing and performing a 10-minute one-act play within a fun-filled 24-hour period. “The workshops are a way to get teenagers to engage with their own stories and learn skills on how to share those stories as a performance. It’s an opportunity for them to explore the issues relevant to them within the safe space of theatre”, playwright and producer Toni Wills said.

EVERY PLATE A PLEASURE TO THE PALATE BY HOLLIE HARRIS “I love to eat! As far back as I remember when I was a child the first thing I asked mum was ‘what’s for dinner’." Chef Hugh McDonogh loves his job. He’s one of the very few who genuinely found his calling in life and if you’ve tasted some of his fare coming out of the kitchen at the Cooroy RSL lately, you would’ve tasted the ‘happy’ in his food. Hugh has worked in over 60 professional kitchens throughout his career and although he thrives in the RSL’s fast paced environment, he takes a calm approach to everything. Working throughout Australia, Canada, South Korea has honed Hugh’s craft and it all comes together on the plate. His whole seared hot mustard roast bolar blade is cooked to perfection for five hours with star anise. Why rush things? The Cooroy RSL is known for great value roasts of the day, but there’s so much more to it than that. “We spend a lot of time and effort to ensure the roast is 100 per cent perfect every day, from seared mustard, beef blade slow cooked, to perfect pork crackling, it’s a process,” Hugh said. Time and time again the kitchen turns out tender, juicy beef. Taking the time to cook each meal to perfection is an art-form in a busy kitchen. They seal the whole blade with salt and pepper on a hot grill until a

dark sear is reached - the darker the better, chef says. Then into deep cooking tray with red wine, star anise, bay leaf, onion, celery. Then it’s slow cooked in stock and hot English mustard for five hours. After all that, the beef takes a well-earned two-hour rest before serving. No short-cuts here.
The RSL make what the community requests. Over time seasonal dishes come and go but they love change and frequently change the menu to suit the constantly evolving food scene. Being winter now, the menu is geared to more hearty dishes, such as the 350g
yearling beef schnitzel with homemade sourkraut and mushroom jus. So what makes the Cooroy RSL home for veteran chef Hugh McDonogh? “I love the fast-paced environment, making the customers happy and meeting all the good people.” ●

Head chef Tony Rogers prides himself on the club’s good wholesome food and with $13 lunch specials there’s no denying the prices are good as well. MEALS AND MORE WITH THEM Just a year after taking over the kitchen at Tewantin Noosa Bowls Club, head chef Darren Pyle and his wife Kym are adding on a coffee shop and reporting record attendance. “People must be liking what we are doing, it’s really increasing,â€? Darren said. The past month has been very busy for the club’s bistro with 2500 meals served in July which is an increase of 750 from the previous year. And it’s no wonder with a selection of homemade cakes on offer in addition to bistro meals prepared by Darren and his team of eight staff. Darren said the new coffee shop with alfresco seating will open in September with a new coffee machine and bring with it a menu change and an increase in the range of homemade cakes. “It will have a bright new look and we’ll have more snack type food for members,â€? he said. “There’ll be homemade pies and sausage rolls and wraps.â€? Darren said the bistro menu would also be changed to co-incide with the coffee shop opening. He said the bistro specials were very popular with bowlers and pensioners and would be continuing. The club is very popular with bowls played every day and regular tournaments. “We have a lot of people up from down south. It’s a very busy time. Most of them are members of the club. Some come for four weeks and others for three months,â€? he said. Barefoot bowls is also popular with corporate and social events and will be more popular as Christmas approaches, Darren said. Tewantin Noosa Bowls Club is at 65 Hilton Terrace, Tewantin. Phone 5449 7155. â—?

BEST RESULT FOR NOOSA ALIVE Noosa Alive president Johanne Wright has confirmed the date for next year’s festival as 20-29 July and festival director Ian Mackellar and his team are hard at work to secure entertainers and activities for the event. This year’s event was the festival’s most successful ever, fulfilling its program of delivering more than 250 artists and 130 events - including 18 free events. Festival spokeswoman Giorgi Ciot said a number of shows were sold out and it had the largest box office sales ever. “Noosa Alive proved itself to be an important asset to the Noosa business community as hotels and restaurants were full as tourists mixed with locals to enjoy the experience,” she said.
Georgi said about 10,000 people flocked to the Lion’s Park on Noosa River for the an afternoon of free family fun and fireworks display which opened the festival and ended with a fabulous four-day party on Noosa Main Beach. A number of the events were being presented to Queensland audiences for the first time. There were six premieres in all, including Luke Kennedy’s opening night show at The J, titled His Voice, the Queensland Ballet’s new work by choreographer Amy Hollingsworth and cabaret act by Olympic diver Matthew Mitcham. To be involved in the next festival email info@noosalongweekend.com or phone 5474 2544. ●

THE SECRET LIFE OF BATS The Sunshine Coast hinterland’s renowned natural scientist, zoologist Dr Les Hall has spent an academic lifetime studying bats both here and in bat-rich Borneo where he has trained many budding zoologists in that country. He is passionate about raising the public profile of bats which have received a battering in recent years with the emergence of the Hendra and Lyssa viruses attributed to the country-wide flying fox. Les said the public fear and wariness of bats goes back centuries when bats were associated with vampires and witch's brews. “Most people have always been fearful of these black leathery things that fly around at night,” he said. EAGLES SHOW HOW TO BY BEK PETRIE NOOSA EAGLES Noosa under-9 Gold built on last week’s win with a 3-0 victory over Stella Maris. An early goal from Bella started the scoring. Great work from the defence and midfielders kept the ball with our forwards. Prolific goal scorer Joel scored a cracking chip over the goal keepers head. Oliver continued his great work in the midfield to earn player-ofthe-match. Joel then got his double with the only goal in the second half. What a tough close game for under-9 Black. They were up against some big strong defenders from opposing team Coolum. Each player kept going determined not to give the game away. Alexander absolutely shone, stopping some outstanding hard kicks as goalie then came out in the second half and backed it up with fantastic defence. The game came to a close finish with the score being 5-4 after Noah belted in two goals before the whistle blew. Well done to Noah and Lenny kicking the goals, and to Baden, Jaymie, Cooper, James and Kallum for their defending on field. Player-of-the-match went to deserving Alexander who was exceptional. Cooper also won a voucher for his great play.
Under-9s player of the week Alexander Mulholland. The under-6 Black team came away very happy with their win against Coolum Stingrays with the score 5-0. Every player put in 100 per cent on field. Eli stopped every ball from our opposing team in goals and Emily, Charlie, Max, Zach, Isaac and Myles all showed great defence. Congratulations to Max scoring his first goal for the season, and to our other goal shooters Charlie, Myles and Isaac. Isaac took home the player-of-the-match for his outstanding play. ●
GIRLS ARE KICKING GOALS ALL OVER BY MARGIT CRUICE It was a nail-biting finish to the semi-final of the Queensland Junior Girls Schools AFL competition last week. St Teresa’s Catholic College and Cleveland State High had scores locked at the full-time siren. It took two periods of extra time for a result to be determined with St Teresa’s coming up the winner with a score of 29-22. The best on ground were Maggie Harmer, Lili Clifton and Lauren Vaughean. This puts the team into the top four in Queensland with the girls competing in the preliminary final in October for the right to play in the grand final. ● Tigers have the height on Burleigh.
TIGERS POUNCE AGAIN FOR A WIN BY MITCH WOODS The Rococos Bar and Bistro Noosa Tigers bounced back from their second loss of the season with a commanding 22-goal win at Weyba Road over a fairly lifeless Burleigh Bombers outfit last Saturday. The first half was a scrappy and untidy affair, although the Noosa boys were always in control and if not for some wayward goal-kicking, quite possibly should have blown the game away a tad earlier. The big win keeps the Tigers alone at the top of the Hart Sport Division 1 QFA ladder, with two rounds to play out. The usual suspects were again among the best, with ruckman Coleman and McDonald feeding the on ball brigade the entire day. The grunt of Nick Hill and Barry Smeeton released stars Templeton and in particular Fitzpatrick whose skill and movement through traffic wowed the crowd on several occasions to be adjudged best player on the ground. Down back it was Laskey again who shone with his strength and precision with helpers Lambourne, Maher and in particular Woods who again made himself one of the stand-out players on ground with another near faultless display of skill and team orientated play. Up forward it was great to see Kent Delbridge back in some top form, bagging six goals with big Ryan Jeffries and coach Sam Faure chiming in with eight between them in a very dominant performance. So with two fixture rounds remaining, I’m sure Sam Faure and his coaching staff will be fine-tuning selection and training with some very big games coming up within the next month. ● noosatoday.com.au

PLENTY OF EFFORT POMONA BOWLS Friday 4 August - Twilight Bowls with plenty of keen bowlers on the green. Winners on the night were Denise Debus and Sam Hands, and runners-up went to Peter Read and Wayne Coonan (a visitor to the club). The jackpot was not won and carries over. Wednesday 2 August - Ladies Mixed Triples Championship round one - the team of Elizabeth Dewhirst, Bettina Winkler and Joselyn Rabjohns (s) defeated Katie McInnes, Denise Debus and Jeanne Price (s) with a comfortable margin. In the game between Sharon Foale, Gaye Bible and Veronis O’Connor (s) against Judy Muir, Marie Robertson and Linda McDougall it was a battle to the finish. With the score at 24-25 it was up to Veronis to take two points on the last end in a great display of controlled bowling. The final round will put Team Rabjohns against Team Veronis. ●

Great work from the defence and midfielders kept the ball with our forwards. Prolific goal scorer Joel scored a cracking chip over the goal keepers head. Cooper also won a voucher for his great play. on the same surfer. Anyone who’s surfed Huntington Pier will know that drop-ins, snakes and collisions are not uncommon, but Toledo, number seven on the rankings after his sensational win at Jeffrey’s Bay where he truly raised the bar for pro surfing, really should know better. If you’re going to split the peak, you’d better be sure of what the other guy is doing, particularly if it’s Igarashi. Toledo’s interference call against Kanoa in Brazil a couple of months back led to a subsequent blow-up with the judges and a suspension from the Fiji event. Now, back in contention for a deserved world title, he’d better brush up his act, and if there’s bad blood with Kanoa, leave it in the locker room..
Meanwhile, your correspondent spent the week in chilly Melbourne, or “Antarctica with trams”, as the delightful social diarist Cassandra used to refer to it. No offence Melbourne, but eight degrees maximum is just not cutting it, especially when your rented downtown apartment’s airconditioning has had the fritz! Coming home after a long, hard day of meetings and blah-de-blahing on the wireless, I did a couple of pirouettes around the vast and fridge-like room, and unable to shake the icicles off, had no option but to repair to the warm and cosy whisky bar next door. In fact the whisky bar scene caught me by surprise, not having spent much time in the Melbourne CBD in recent years. Flinders Lane is just one long parade of barely-signposted doorways leading to tiny caverns of delight where you are served endless flights of whisky and cheese. Nothing better for the winter blues ... except coming home to our endless, near surfless, blue sky winter. Footnote: Tonight’s the night at Halse Lodge - the first tour stop for the Life of Brine, with special guests Band of Frequencies’ Shannon and OJ Unplugged. Tickets at the door, but you’d better let Annie know you’re coming on 5448 2053. ●

HOLY TOLEDO! HE’S DONE IT AGAIN! Across the pond at Huntington Beach, the women’s US Open world tour event saw all the Aussies knocked out in the quarters as Sage Erickson posted her first-tour victory. This still leaves the Aussie girls with a stranglehold on the rankings, with Tyler Wright and Sally Fitzgibbons one and two, but Courtney Conlogue has edged Steph Gilmore out of third. In the men’s QS event, Huntington local Kanoa Igarashi was a popular winner, but the sensation of the event was Igarashi’s semi-final when Brazil’s Felipe Toledo, the fastest surfer on tour, was called for his second interference in three events, 12352455-LB20-17

With due deference to avid reader Big Wave Bob, this column is going to be mainly about live people surfing now, and there’s been a lot going on. In sparkling little righthand runners at Cabarita, just a few hundred metres from where we farewelled Joe Larkin the week before (sorry Bob), the Australian Longboard and Logger Titles played out, with the Noosa Malibu Club all over it. As I write there are still a few divisions to be decided, but last Sunday was a great day for Noosa, and for the Sunny Coast generally. Let’s start with the girls first, just for a change, and the standout performance of Noosa junior star Emily Lethbridge, who made three individual finals over the course of the day, and took out the Australian junior women’s title ahead of Noosa’s Felicity St Baker. Emily also finished a tight second to Sydney’s Tully White in the open women’s, with Noosa’s Kirra Molnar a creditable fourth. To top it off, Emily also finished fourth, just behind Noosa’s Zac Brewer, in the open gender junior logger. Still with the women, I mentioned in this column a few weeks back Noosa’s Kristy Quirk’s stellar performance at the Whalebone Classic in Perth in sketchy conditions, and in great conditions at Cabba she backed it up with a second in the over35 women. This girl has come such a long way in a relatively short time, trading the Isadora Duncan scarf and the arabesque for straight-up, solid surfing with style. Great work, gal. Turning to the blokes, most of the glory went south, with Gold Coast veteran Dane Pioli taking out the open men’s title and scoring a fourth in the logger, where Sunny Coaster Clinton Guest finished second to a blazing Ben Considine. In the over-35 men’s, Brisso Dean Bevan (who was also strong in Perth) took out the title from Buderim’s Jason Caldow, while in the junior ranks the aforementioned Zac Brewer finished just behind second-placed Aidan Feeley of Caloundra in longboard and logger. With some good results also coming through in the old bloke divisions as I write, well done Noosa Mal Club. It’s great to see such strength right through the ranks. And I bet it was fun too, all those sun-drenched winter peelers.

SILKY SKILLS ON SHOW AND ON TARGET BY LUCY WHITEHILL
try. Then he did it again. And again. And again. But Noosa’s under-10s is not a one-man team, oh no. These boys work together like a box of “M n Ms” - once one gets started, the rest are soon to go. It didn’t take long before Daniel scored. And Max. And Atticus, Cooper and Harry. And they kicked a fine collection of conversions. Captain Finn led the forwards ever onwards, and Mackie, Oliver and Oscar the Wrecker wreaked havoc. Joey made impressive surges and Will battered into the opposition like a red-haired demon. Backs such as Clay and Clancy were quickly fed the ball, selflessly passing to Tom and Jamie who gained vital metres. Great ruck-work, great passing and great backing up led to a wonderful result for Noosa. ●
NOOSA DOLPHINS JUNIORS UNDER 7 The under-7 crew were on target this week after a fun training at Pirate Park, Noosaville showing off to the public all their skills they have learnt this year so far and that continued at both of their games on Saturday playing at ’Saints’ grounds at Peregian Springs. Outstanding play from Eli this week, his skills are really shining through in his first year of playing, Oliver was showing his speed and breaking through defence in both games and Conor was equally as impressive sharing the ball to his team-mates. Sam was showing his speed and getting around the field pretty quick landing him a couple of tries. Dominoes players of the day this week were Eli Hammersley and Sam Archer. ● UNDER 9 Round 13 was another cracker of a game this week played at our home ground. Once again the Noosa White under-9 team did not disappoint the spectators who ventured out into another spectacular winters morning on the Sunshine Coast. The team ended up beating Flinders fairly convincingly, however the result could have gone the other way early with Flinders the first to score. The forwards continue to show progression with good structure around the ruck, providing good quality ball for the backs to work with. Excellent technique was shown by a number of players in defence, pulling off some quality tackles. ●
NOOSA WEATHER FORECAST
Sam Archer scores a goal against Eumundi in the under-7s . UNDER 10 Noosa 51 def Caloundra Gold 10 The Under 10 Dolphins continued their entertaining and flamboyant style of football with a convincing win under Saturday’s beautiful blue skies. Like the monster rising from the Black Lagoon, Finnbar powered over in the second minute, stunning the opposition. Oscar wove his way into Caloundra’s nightmares, and the backing up of Atticus hammered home the nails in their coffins. Tom’s try had Caloundra fleeing from Godzilla, and our hard-hitting forward defence left them running for sanctuary,
not from goblins and ghoulies but from screaming 10-year olds chasing them down like swarming bats after fluttering moths. The precision goal-kicking was the final stake in the opposition’s heart, and they fled into the sunset, not to return (this year, anyway). Dominoes players of the match: Joey Carroll, Harry Caspers, Tom Longhurst. ● UNDER 10 Noosa 60 def Saints 0 Saints began this week’s game strongly, until Oscar broke through for a 50-metre
HOOK, LINE & SINKER
UNDER 13 Noosa 57 def Caloundra 5 Noosa took control from the kick-off, scored an early try with a good finish in the corner from Harry Heppell, and then continued to dominate the rest of game in one of their best displays this year. They racked up another eight tries including one solo move from Max Ruster who caught the ball from a restart and ran through half of the Caloundra team to score under the posts. This team has worked hard together in training all season on their fitness, skills and game plan so that they can put in performances like this for the whole 50 minutes. Thanks for the effort and entertainment boys. Keep it going. Tries: Max Ruster 4, Harry Heppell 2, Jason Burns 2, Oliver Holmes. Cons: Jarrah Charlesworth 6. ●

IT’S ALL ON FOR EARLY RISERS ON RIVERFRONT If you’re anything like me you are finding it harder and harder to get out of bed early but believe me it is worth it. The Noosa River has been bursting with flathead, trevally, tailor, bream, queenfish and if you’re good enough maybe a nice jew. The flathead have been thick over the last month with Weyba creek, the sand bars near the mouth and of course the lakes all producing trophy fish. Trevally have been the big news with some thumper golden and giant trevally caught on lures in the early mornings and late afternoons in Woods Bay, the back of the Noosa Sound and the top of the Tewantin ski run. Most of the bigger trevally have been taken on prawn profile lures and soft plastics. Big tailor are on the prowl inside the river mouth and around to Woods Bays at night with pillies on a ganged hook rig fished unweighted working best when fishing around the river mouth. Some bigger queenfish made short visits into Woods Bay crashing the schools of unsuspecting mullet with some of the Noosa regulars having their lures destroyed. Plenty of whiting have also been on offer with some good fish landed around the frying pan and along the dog beach - as usual peeled prawns, worms and those freshly

With some very special offshore conditions over the last week anglers have made their way out in pursuit of some big knobby snapper. North Reef has been worth a look with nice snapper, sweetlip tuskies and some thumper cobia. Chardon’s Reef has also produced snapper and sweetlip while close in on
Sunshine Reef you can expect mostly squire sized snapper, sweet lip, Moses perch and maybe a coral trout. There have been plenty of good jewies taken from most of the reefs along the coast with fish up to 14kg being caught. For those that have been doing the run out to the Barwon banks there have been plenty of quality fish on offer, large pearl perch, snapper, cobia, mori cod, kingies and amberjack have all hit the decks. On the pelagic side of things there are still some good tuna, spotted mackeral and school mackeral to be had with plenty on offer around Jew Sholes and Sunshine Reef. On the beaches, Sunshine and Sunrise beaches have been doing well in the early evening with big bream, tarwhine and tailor all on the chew. Tailor are doing better than last season with some good captures coming from Teewah camping grounds north. The bigger tailor are still just south of Double island with the morning and afternoon tides the prime bite. Good bream are also in the mix with plenty of larger breeding fish just about to spawn. Whiting have also been in numbers with plenty of fish on offer on the run out tide. So on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures. ● noosatoday.com.au

SURFING RESULTS ON CLOUD NINE Over the last week, and with finals on last Sunday the Noosa Surf Board Riders were ecstatic with the very successful results from all the juniors who competed recently in the Queensland School State titles held at Coolum. Cooper Davies, 17, of St Andrews Anglican College won the prestigious U19s Boys’ Event over some of Australia’s top Junior surfers. Noosa Surf Board Riders president Paul Peterson said previous winners of this elite event had been World Champions Mick Fanning and Joel Parkinson. “His performance throughout the event was impeccable and he deserved the win with his gutsy determination, supported by
his coach Dean Brady,” he said. To complement the many trophies, Emily Lethbridge, also of St Andrews, was runnerup in the closely fought-out final of the U19 girls’ event. Georgia Lorentson of St Andrews was a member of the winning Mark Richards Shield U19 girls team. All of the surfers are now destined for the Australian titles to be held at Culburra Beach/Shoalhaven, NSW in late November 2017. “We are so proud of all and every one of our juniors that compete - our groms are destined for continued success,” Paul said.

Tewantin golf celebrates 80 years.
TEWANTIN GOLF IS 80 NOT OUT First conceived 80 years ago, the then Tewantin Noosa Golf Club has developed from the original nine-hole course, then 12-hole and finally 18 holes. The Noosa Golf Club marked its anniversary with a range of events. General manager Allan Harris said the club was fully booked for the Friday dinner with more than 200 members in attendance, all commenting on the great food and service. And members draw prize winners were Rayner and Alan Summers and James Lonie. On Sunday the club hosted a jazz band put together by local jazz identity John Murray. “The afternoon was well patronised, with everyone enjoying the mood,” Allan said. ●
RON LANE’S PEOPLE
RON LANE
QUIET ACHIEVER IS REMEMBERED BY ALL WHO KNEW HIM As I lay awake in the pre-dawn hours of Monday 31 July, I was finding it very hard to come to grips with a harsh reality of life my clubmate and friend Garth Prowd OAM and club patron had passed away. My only comfort was that I was not alone, for every long-serving old boy of our beloved Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club was going through the same emotion. Grief. It just didn’t seem real-or for that matter right, but it was a definite. I first walked through the doors of the club in October 1957 and down through the years in both my capacity as a patrolling member and member of management, I have met many people from all walks of life: and on reflection I have no hesitation what so ever in agreeing with old boy Russell Harrop when he said, “Mate there was only one Garth Prowd, he was something special - he was unique”. Down through the years we have seen many people come and go but he was always there. Sometimes in his later life his overseas business interests, as well as his sporting commitments would keep him from our doors, but he would always return. After obtaining his bronze in the mid’70s this former Gympie boy, served his time on the beach, as a patrolman and was always held in high regard by his clubmates - someone who didn’t say much but always got things done. noosatoday.com.au
In the late ’70s when he and Sunshine Beach member Gordon Clements were appointed to work Noosa and Sunshine beaches by Noosa Shire, they were in fact the first lifesavers to be employed as paid lifeguards. “His attitude and his leadership in the area of fitness had many of his clubmates pulling their hair out,” said one of the old boys. “If he wasn’t swimming he was on a board or ski; come on you blokes lets go. And of course we would follow; and he always led quietly from the front.” However his biggest contribution to his club had to be in the business sector. This was right up his alley, for by the late ’80s many lifesaving clubs were taking a very serious look at the formation of supporter clubs. Realising that the chook raffles were no longer sufficient to supply the necessary funding for a rescue organisation that was expanding beyond all expectations, he took a good look around and with assurance, based on his own success within the world of business (USM Events) and sponsorship gave some very serious advice - which happy to relate, we listened to and accepted. The restructure of our management committee, rebuild of our clubhouse and above all becoming more involved in our community - our world would no longer
Garth Prowd OAM - a quiet achiever. be just between the flags on Noosa's Main Beach. With the passing years, his absolute commitment to the community never wavered. His work and loyalty for his surf club was just the tip of the iceberg. His tireless efforts to take the Noosa Tri to the very top plus his involvement with other organisations, is now legendary. Here again his relationship with people (sponsors, competitors and coaches in particular) was a telling point in reaching his goal. However it was not just from our
community that we saw the respect, but also from the elite of the international sporting world who came to visit; legends like Dawn Fraser, Mark Webber, Loretta Harrop and Steve Moneghetti - just to name a few. His outstanding contribution to both sport and tourism and above all his respectful attitude to all who passed his way, resulted and rightly so, in his being the reciperant of many coveted awards; awards which we both acknowledge and salute. In the world of business his seat on the Queensland Tourism Board speaks volumes. With the lifesaving movement now being a necessary part of tourism, to have Garth, with his support of surf club life, taking a chair was gratifying. When asked by the serving Premier Campbell Newman, how he felt about taking the seat Garth replied, “Well Mr Premier, I am not the type of person who will tell politicians just what they want to hear.” “That Mr Prowd,” replied the Premier, “is exactly why you are here.” To me Garth’s greatest achievement has to be his family; wife Robyn, daughters Sally, Megan and sons-in-law Matt and Ben. To all of you the doors of his surf club will be forever open and our help and support is, and will always be just a phone call away. Vaya con Dios, my friend, Vaya con Dios. ●
