This week we return our attention to the hot topic of the Warwick Saleyards and options for the future of Warwick as a major livestock selling centre. It’s clear we have the potential to grow this important part of our regional economy - the questions are how, where, and managed by whom? It’s a complex issue and it won’t be going away in a hurry, and will be up for discussion at a public meeting for rural producers at Freestone this morning. Other contentious issues we take a look at this week include plans for a new Bunnings outlet in Warwick and the thorny issue of the Warwick Town Hall toilets. Also making news this week is a forum for Granite Belt producers to connect with rural industry service providers tomorrow - details inside and plans for a new operational model for the Stanthorpe YMCA. There’s a big weekend coming up in Killarney with the 2017 Rodeo - spread over Friday, Saturday and Sunday - and we know a good time is guaranteed for all. And with spring on the way well, nearly - bull sale season is here, and that’s also a reminder for readers to keep an eye out in next week’s Free Times for the August edition of our monthly gloss rural magazine ‘Rural Links’. - Jeremy Sollars

- tried unsuccessfully to gain financial support for her legal bid from other local property owners but in the end was forced to go it alone. “I don’t have a spare $250,000 in my back pocket to keep fighting - if I did, I would,” she told the Free Times. “Had I lost Bunnings could have sued me for their costs, which would have been double that. “It is going to be catastrophic. “But I sincerely hope that I’m wrong and that no child (at Warwick East SS) loses their life or suffers an injury in a future flood. “But you don’t expect any compassion from big businesses, it’s all fluff and bluster and it’s all about who has the dollars. “I just don’t get it that the council spent all that money on a flood study that recommended no further building in the floodplain - it’s crazy. “Only time will tell now.” A Bunnings spokeswoman said the company could not yet comment on when construction of the new store might commence, as the court process had not been formally concluded at time of printing this week. ● Jeremy Sollars

HERITAGE DOWN THE TOILET? The State Department of Environment and Heritage Protection (EHP) has recommended against heritage listing of the toilet block behind the Warwick Town Hall. The fate of the toilets has been hanging in the balance since the Southern Downs Regional Council voted earlier this year in favour of demolishing them, with mayor Tracy Dobie describing them as “unsafe” and “an eyesore”. The council was later forced to apply to the department for approval for the demolition as it was discovered the toilets fell within the heritage “footprint” of the town hall, without being specifically named as a feature of the building. The council withdrew the demolition application after the Southern Downs ‘RANGE’ resident’s action group applied to EHP to have the toilets specifically cited as part of the Town Hall’s State Heritage listing. The decision by EHP - made last Thursday 3 August - will come as a blow to the RANGE group and many community members who believe the toilets both have heritage significance and are wellused by locals and the travelling public alike. The final decision on heritage listing of the toilets will be made by the independent Queensland Heritage Council (QHC), expected

at its next meeting on Thursday 24 August. The QHC will have the option of going against the EHP recommendation. If the QHC goes with the recommendation, the council is expected to re-apply to EHP for demolition approval. Heritage advocates have had a win with the QHC State heritage listing the Leslie Centenary Memorial Gate in Leslie Park at its July meeting. The Glengallan Homestead Trust had sought the return of the gate to the homestead for its 150th anniversary later this year. Helen Harm has reluctantly withdrawn a legal bid over the proposed new Bunnings development in Warwick.

The Stanthorpe YMCA has decided that they will open the way for a new operational model for the facility and have asked the Southern Downs Regional Council to support the facility until new operators are found. A council statement released this week said a tender process “will be developed to find an operator for the facility”. “Council envisages that the forthcoming tender will incorporate both the indoor recreation facility and the operation of the Stanthorpe Outdoor Pool,” the statement said. “Council has agreed to support the facility to ensure the service remains in place for the benefit of the community. “The Stanthorpe YMCA will work with council to transition the indoor sports facility as part of the tender process. “To ensure a seamless and harmonious transition, the project management plan has been developed to meet that need. “Council will place staff within the facility to get a better understanding of the services and the business, which will assist in informing council when preparing the tender documentation. “Over the next six months council will fix issues in the building that are either related

Construction of a new Bunnings in Warwick has moved a step closer with the withdrawal of a court appeal by real estate agent Helen Harm and the granting of approval by the Southern Downs Regional Council for filling of the proposed site. As previously reported the council late last year approved a new Bunnings outlet at the corner of Canning and Condamine streets, behind KFC and in the Condamine River floodplain. The plan involves bringing nearly four metres of fill onto the vacant site to raise the new building out of the flood zone, but critics have warned this could potentially worsen the effects of future floodwaters in the vicinity. Mrs Harm lodged an appeal in the Planning and Environment Court of Queensland in February in a bid to overturn the council approval - and have the new Bunnings built on pylons but has reluctantly had to withdraw the action due to legal costs. And in another kick at goal for Bunnings the council issued an ‘operational works’ approval for filling of the site on Thursday 11 May, despite Mrs Harm’s court action being current at that time. The operational works approval was issued to Acor Consultants, who have confirmed to the Free Times they are working for Bunnings. As well as the impact on her Fitzroy Street business premises and those around it, Mrs Harm is particularly concerned about the flood impact the Bunnings development could have on nearby Warwick East State School. WHERE’S THE BEEF ON

SALEYARDS? BY JEREMY SOLLARS tephen Cullen and his family have a long association with the Warwick Saleyards and have seen a lot of changes over nearly 55 years of its operation. The Cullens hail from Karara, west of Warwick and Stephen’s grandfather Tom was the first foundation president of the Warwick and District Municipal Saleyards Board back when the facility opened in 1962, serving in that role until 1974. Plaques inside and outside the saleyards office commemorate Tom Cullen’s legacy there, along with other key local figures who were part of the creation of the Warwick Saleyards, which was a joint project of the former Warwick, Rosenthal and Glengallan shires. As the debate over the future of the saleyards continues to gain heat, many in the community are questioning who should run them into the future - along with questions over the options for future expansion and growth. Like many others, Stephen Cullen - who works for Kevin McMahon and Sons Stock and Station Agents - has seen the Warwick Saleyards grow and evolve down through the years. “We’ve got a lot of family history here - I started here when I was 17, working for McDougall’s,” he told the Free Times this week. “There’s been a lot of changes- a new drafting complex, new catwalks and scales and the sheep pens. “At the end of the day, the saleyards were built by the ratepayers.” The Southern Downs Regional Council is currently assessing Expressions of Interest (EOIs) for the potential leasing out of the saleyards to a private operator, and is yet to put a timeframe on a final decision, while still retaining the option of continuing to manage the facility directly into the future. But a council spokeswoman told the Free Times this week the EOIs would be discussed by its Saleyards Advisory Committee at a meeting due to be held “in three weeks”. As reported in the Free Times, the inaugural meeting of the Saleyards Advisory Committee was held last December, at which future options for livestock sales in Warwick were discussed. Along with the leasing option, the committee also considered a suggestion by Les Fraser of Frasers Livestock Transport to demolish the existing facility and build a new saleyards on a nearby ‘greenfield’ site. Mr Fraser - who spoke to the Free Times at this week’s

S

cattle sale on Tuesday - said his family had not submitted an EOI to lease the saleyards, contrary to what many in the community had been expecting. But he was adamant in his view that the existing saleyards were too small and there’s not enough room on the current site for future expansion. He said the Fraser family had “no interest in building or running a saleyards” but also said Warwick had huge potential for future growth as a livestock selling centre. “We’re ideally situated for a new, state of the art, undercover selling facility,” he told the Free Times. “The closest other selling centres are Dalby and Casino and Toowoomba’s which is in a densely populated area. “And we’re the only weekly sheep selling centre in Queensland. “This is the ideal time for Warwick, and we’re not starting from scratch, but this facility is too small and there’s no room for expansion, and there’s not enough holding capacity. “We’d need 60 or 70 acres to build a proper facility to handle the potential future growth.”

Mr Fraser denied suggestions a parcel of land owned by Frasers Livestock Transport near their depot off Kenilworth Street was being put forward as a potential new site. “We didn’t buy that block to build a saleyards on,” he said. “There’s the old dump site that’s just sitting there, and it’s all industrial land in the area. “We need to look at all of the options for Warwick’s growth as a selling centre.” Others who spoke to the Free Times at this week’s cattle sale expressed concerns about safety for employees handling livestock inside the yards complex - including difficult beasts - pointing out that the design of laneways with overhead bars meant moving stock around on horseback was not possible. Concerns were also raised about drainage within the existing complex, which slopes down towards the north from Bracker Road. Weekly cattle yardings have been consistently over the 1100 mark in recent weeks. ●

BIG NUMBERS EXPECTED AT MEETING TODAY

TopX Warwick agents, from left, George McVeigh, Morgan Harris and Jim Ross believe more information is needed about the implications of leasing out of the saleyards.

OPEN MINDS - BUT MORE INFORMATION NEEDED? The consistent comment made by producers and others in the local agricultural sector about the current Warwick Saleyards debate is a lack of information from the council about the current Saleyards operation - and what leasing it out to a private operator might mean. Concerns also exist over confidential meetings of the Saleyards Advisory Committee this year, with the Free Times last week having been unsuccessful in obtaining the minutes of those meetings through a Right To Information (RTI) application to the council. Agent George McVeigh of TopX echoed those sentiments this week, but also has an open mind about the future of the facility. “I think as agents we’re interested in anything that improves and maintains the Saleyards and attracts new clientele,” he said. “At the moment, we have people selling cattle here from everywhere - including Goondiwindi and places like

Mungindi in northern New South Wales - this is a great selling facility. “We were told at a meeting of agents last year with (council CEO) David Keenan that the saleyards don’t make a profit, the income is taken up by labour costs. “I think the concern is that an outside operator could increase the fees and charges, they could double the agents’ affiliation fees and sellers could be charged more per head. “Everyone needs to have more input and more of a say, whether it’s about leasing or building a new saleyards.” Mr McVeigh said a bigger - or a new saleyards - in Warwick could “capture” new livestock business from western areas of Queensland, but pointed out that the current facility works well for many local producers. He also rejected the view held by some that saleyards everywhere would eventually be made redundant by online livestock sales. “Online really only works for the really big lines of cattle, where you’ve got two or three decks on the trucks, with the cost of freight the way it is,” he said.

Producers and other interested landowners and parties from across the Warwick and Stanthorpe regions are expected to turn out in force to a meeting this morning – Thursday 11 August – at the Freestone Memorial Hall to discuss both the future of the Warwick Saleyards and the council’s new ‘Invasive Pest Control Scheme’ (IPCS). The meeting will commence at 11am at the hall on Freestone Road, and has been organised by former deputy mayor Ross Bartley and will be chaired by former mayor Ron Bellingham. A council spokeswoman would not confirm if mayor Tracy Dobie and councillors would attend the meeting, saying they would “respond directly to the organisers”. Mr Bartley told the Free Times Cr Dobie had confirmed she would be in attendance, as had Cr Vic Pennisi. ● “The saleyards here work well for the smaller lines of cattle, and you might have six different weights. “The smaller sellers will sometimes get a better price than they would online, depending on the day.” TopX trainee Morgan Harrison said while online livestock sales were part of the market these days, face-toface selling in a physical saleyards environment was still integral to the industry. “You’ve got to look at the clearing rates with online sales - AuctionsPlus has only cleared around 30 per cent in the last couple of weeks,” he said. ●

NEWS JURY IS STILL OUT ON WHAT’S IN OUR WATER

STUDENTS GIVEN A CHANCE TO SHINE At Warwick West State School, the staff work together to give all students the opportunity to shine. The school’s culture is built around the values of Security, Healthy Relationships, Integrity, Nurturing and Excellence (SHINE) and permeates throughout the classrooms and playground alike. The leadership team and staff work hard to ensure the continuation of a wellearned reputation for being an educational leader in the region. They confidently progress the school by building on quality past experiences. As partners in education, they look forward to support from parents and working together in the most important task of nurturing children’s development and potential and helping them to understand how it feels to ‘SHINE’. The Warwick West State School campus comprises the George Street complex, servicing Prep to Year 7, a Special Education Unit (SEU) and an Early Development Centre (EDC). The P-7 complex, bounded by George, Pratten, Clarke and Hudson streets, is set in an attractive environment covering 2.446 hectares. ●

An investigation by the Southern Downs Regional Council into contamination of the Leyburn town water supply due to “pharmaceuticals” is still ongoing after two months. The council announced the investigation in a statement released on Wednesday 7 June which said the Leyburn town water was safe to drink despite detecting “very low levels of pharmaceuticals” in the town’s bore water supply. The council’s manager of Water and Wastewater Renee Wallace told the Free Times this week Leyburn’s water supply “continues to meet Australian Drinking Water Guidelines”.

COURT DATES SET FOR APPEARANCE Stanthorpe Police reported a quiet week with only a few minor incidents. Overnight between Saturday 5 August and Sunday 6 August two New South Wales registration pates were stolen from a Toyota Prado parked on Archibald Street Stanthorpe. Last Tuesday 1 August, about 6pm, a 41-year-old male from Severnlea was detected speeding on the New England Highway. Police will allege he was also found to be unlicensed and was issued with a Notice to Appear for the Stanthorpe Magistrate’s Court.

“Testing for giardia and cryptosporidium is routinely undertaken and test results continue to show an absence of both protozoa. “E.coli and coliform testing also continues to comply with the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines.” In June Director of Engineering Services Peter See said while the chemicals in the water will not cause harm to people “the source of their presence needs to be further investigated”. Pharmaceuticals in water supplies can infiltrate from human waste which enters the underground water source from septic systems. ●

“Council is working closely with Queensland Health on an ongoing basis,” she said. “Council have increased the frequency and range of water quality testing.

Also on Tuesday 1 August, about 1.30pm, a 41-year-old female from Stanthorpe was intercepted on High Street and was submitted to a roadside drug test and as a result the female provided a further positive sample and was issued with an Notice to Appear for drug driving to appear in the Stanthorpe Magistrate’s Court. Crime information can be reported anonymously to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. ●

NO HELP FROM JOH I have long had a love for Glengallan Homestead. When I was at school, many years ago, I wrote a letter to the then Joh government, asking for them to restore the homestead for the bicentenary. Of course this did not happen. I’m also proud to have been one of the first volunteers to turn the soil and plant the round garden in front of the homestead. A photo of the homestead in its early days in a recent edition with its gates and picket fence showed just how magnificent it was. I believe the gates should be reinstated in their original site at the homestead. Yes their gift to the city of Warwick is an historic event, however, if the homestead had not been in a state of disrepair they would probably still be standing in their original site. It is my view that the history of the homestead and its significance to our local history and settlers outweighs that of the gates significance in the park. I’m sure that they would be appreciated and acknowledged more if they were at the homestead than at their current position. I read in today’s issue (3 August), that they have been included in the heritage boundary of Leslie Park, so they will not be removed. As with many historical buildings not only in Warwick, they are never given a great deal of attention, if any at all, until someone plans to move or demolish them. So now the gates have been in the limelight, I hope those who wanted them to remain in the park and the council push to highlight them in their current position with relevant landscaping, lighting and appropriate information of their history and how they came to be in Leslie Park to educate locals and visitors to our city. At present, I believe

most people have no understanding of their history and walk through them without a second glance. Until their recent celebrity status in the paper, I’m sure most people would not have been aware of them or where they were located. Duanne Karle, Warwick.

WAIT ON THE DATE Well, well, well, the election for the State of Queensland could (possibly) be held as late as 5 May, 2018. This has now become painfully obvious as the Queensland Premier appears to have promised miners such as Adani, now on their way for take-off! No-one will stop us now is Adani’s boast! However the election might have given Queenslanders a voice via the ballot box, and that would be a big no-no, so there goes the starter’s gun! The election will please those who must be well on their way to please themselves with Queensland’s coal to enrich themselves. Adani is promised to be the first of many mines to destroy the Galilee Basin. This writer asks if coal is the way to prosperity for Australia, why is the country dead broke? More time for the government is less time for our state. The three named candidates for the seat of Southern Downs, one each for One Nation and the Liberal National Party, plus an independent will be too late to save Queensland if the Premier’s 5 May 2018 date for an election is the miner’s gift from the ALP. Will this wake up Queensland and Australia? Our country belongs to the highest bidder, it appears! Melba Morris, Allora.

Focus on Killarney WHEN THE TORNADO TORE THROUGH The Killarney and District Historical Society is hoping to reprint the history of the tornado which devastated Killarney on 22 November, 1968, as part of the 50-year anniversary in 2018.

“MIRACULOUSLY, IN THE CIRCUMSTANCES, MOST OF THE RESIDENTS HAD BEEN AT THE LOCAL THEATRE FOR A SCHOOL SPEECH NIGHT, ONE OF THE FEW BUILDINGS THAT DID NOT COLLAPSE…” The society is hoping to include some new stories in the reprint, so anyone who would like to contribute is asked to email killarneyheritagecentre@gmail. com or drop into the Killarney Heritage Centre during opening hours, 10am to 2pm from Friday to Monday. The 1968 tornado resulted in the fatality of a local girl, and just 27 of the town’s 250 or so homes at the time were left standing. Miraculously, in the circumstances, most of the residents had been at the local theatre for a school speech night, one of the few buildings that did not collapse. To view a historic video of the tornado visit https://vimeo.com/40577586 ●

GARDEN TIME

BEATRICE HAWKINS

MAGNOLIAS A REAL BEAUTY IN BLOOM In travelling the country lately I have seen many beautiful Magnolia x soulangeana trees in flower. They are another favourite with happy associations of childhood for me. As a very small child I used to walk past a beautiful old specimen in the front yard of a very humble home. The elderly lady that lived there was an exschool teacher and had in fact taught my father. She had a few kerosene tins under this tree and I finally plucked up the courage to ask why. She was a dear kindly soul who took the time to explain to an inquisitive little girl how she was propagating new trees by layering. The tins were filled with dirt and the lower limbs pinned down and covered with soil until they took root and were then cut off and she had new shrubs to plant or give away. This lovely tree was under planted with a range of jonquils, daffodils and violets and old fashioned highly perfumed, freesias and was a garden of delight to a small girl. Recently at the Leafmore Garden School, horticulturist and entertaining presenter Brian

Samms, reminded me of this with his far more technical description for achieving the same result. About 10 years ago I drove up the street and the tree was still there and flowering beautifully in very early spring. These magnolias are deciduous and the beautiful goblet shaped flowers appear on the bare limbs and are then followed by the leaves. The one of my childhood was a deep burgundy but now they come in a wide range of colours. These are commonly known as Chinese Magnolias and originate from Asia and Western China. They were brought to England

in 1789 but were considered to be too “sensual” and flamboyant for conservative English gardens of the time but, these days, few large English gardens would be complete without one. They need protection from frosts for the first few years and need protection from wind and to be well watered and mulched twice a year. Etienne Soulange-Bodin (1774-1846) whose name is commemorated with this lovely tree was a French biologist, botanist and army officer. He was a very well educated and honoured army officer, diplomat

and botanist having been awarded the Legion of Honour and Iron Cross by none other than Napoleon. The equally beautiful, but very different, evergreen Magnolia grandiflora is native to southeastern United States. These spectacular, very large and long-lived trees also have happy associations for me as the large cream, lemon scented flowers were used in my mother’s horseshoe-shaped wedding bouquet in the 1930s. As a child I knew just where the tree that supplied these blooms was growing and as far as I know it is still blooming beautifully in the gardens of an historic home on the central coast of NSW. It is now a very old and very large tree having been planted in the late 1800s by an American lady who built the house. These are the bull bay trees of the American South that you envisage when you think of plantations and Scarlet O’Hara. They can grow to be 60 to 90 feet high and 30 to 50 feet wide and live to be 80 to 120 years old given rich, moist, well-drained soil and humid conditions.

SOME MAGNOLIA TRIVIA TO AMUSE: · Magnolia officinalis bark has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries to treat anxiety and improve lung health. It may also have uses in treating Alzheimer’s disease. · In the Disney movie “The Princess and the Frog” the character Tiana is said to be “as pretty as a magnolia in May”! · A white magnolia with a deep red centre is the national flower of North Korea. · A magnolia campbellii specimen growing in Clyne Gardens in Swansea is regarded as the tallest in the UK at 26 metres. · Magnolias do not produce nectar but have protein enriched pollen that bees use as food. · Magnolias have few pest and disease problems. · Lastly, who can forget the cast of feisty ladies in the film “Steel Magnolias”!

Well-known local artists Naomi Trotter and Juanita Faint will open their exhibition ‘Different Perspectives’ at 2pm on Saturday 26 August at the Warwick Art Gallery. The duo will exhibit their recent work at the Warwick Art Gallery on display from Thursday 24 August until Saturday 23 September. Naomi and Juanita are also mother and daughter, and ‘Different Perspectives’ will showcase the similarities and differences in their work. A variety of media have been used which include oils, acrylics, inks, watercolour and pastels. The paintings cover a wide range of subjects drawn from their imagination as well as the world around them, the imaginative work being what they enjoy the most. Both artists find inspiration in similar subjects, but their approach is very different. Naomi works in layers of broken colour and Juanita works Alla Prima, which is blocks of colour. This is their first mother and daughter exhibition. Naomi and Juanita don’t paint together but their subject matter is surprisingly similar

FOCUS ON … Southern Downs Angus THREE … Angus vendors

The Southern Downs Angus Bull sale combines three local vendors.

1

Clunes Crossing Angus - 13 bulls Clunes Crossing Angus was established in 2008 by Andrew Bryant and Francesca Webster. Based at Dalveen, on the cusp of the Southern Downs and Granite Belt, Clunes Crossing is ideally located for producers to view the potential of quality Angus cattle raised under local conditions.

2

Lode Creek Angus - 14 bulls Ken Hollingsworth Lode Creek Angus is a small Angus stud located about 10km East of Stanthorpe, backing onto the NSW border. Foundation cows were all sourced from the highly regarded Wattletop herd of Lock Rogers. Lode Creek has a cow herd of around 30 cows and most will calve to AI sires.

3

Destiny Angus (DSF) - five bulls Peter Crisp Destiny Angus has been operating on the Granite Belt for over 20 years with around 100 cows mated each year. Clients using Destiny sires have been successful in receiving top price at the Blue Ribbon Stanthorpe Weaner sales on numerous occasions as well clients receiving success at the Warwick carcass show.

SIRES ARE READY FOR SERVICE The second annual Southern Downs Angus Bull Sale will be held at the Warwick Saleyards next Saturday 19 August, from 1pm. The sale combines vendors Clunes Crossing, Lode Creek and DFS Angus Studs, with Andrew Bryant of Clunes Crossing Angus saying that with the demise of the Sunstate Angus Bull Sale “we believe this sale offers breeders the best opportunity to access quality Angus bulls sired by some of the best Australian and USA sires”. “All three studs have similar breeding philosophies and focus on producing the best genetic package to commercial and stud breeders looking for fertile, structurally sound progeny with high growth and excellent carcass qualities,” Andrew said. “Replacement heifer production is prioritised and when strategic joining of genetics has this as a primary focus, the bull progeny benefit and ultimately so do the

“All bulls come with a vet certificate including semen testing. “The line-up of bulls has some outstanding stud sire prospects and are well above the breed average when it comes to structure, phenotype, performance, indexes and temperament. “The bulls are bred locally which gives some assurance that there will be no excessive travel to get them home and no dramatic climate or environment shock for the bulls which are bred locally to excel in local conditions.” “All buyers wanting to view the bulls are welcome to attend our open day at Clunes Crossing, Dalveen or at Lode Creek Angus on property the week prior to the sale on 12 and 13 August, from 10am to 3pm.” Information is also available at www. southerndownsangus.com.au and www. clunescrossing.com.au ●

astute buyers of the carefully prepared bulls offered in the Southern Downs Angus Bull Sale. “We intend to hold the sale annually so you can rely on accessing top genetics next year and beyond. “Your commercial outcomes are taken seriously and we will continue to seek the very best genetics from Australia and overseas for AI programs to offer genetic improvement year on year.” Andrew said the bulls being presented at this year’s sale range in age from between 18 months and 30 months and will also included four yearlings from Lode Creek. “We are very happy with the preparation of the bulls and how they have developed,” he said. “They will not be rolling fat and unfit for work or melt when they are taken home. “We aim to present bulls with a fat score of around four.

THE SPIN

CHAMPION BOLT SHOULD TAKE A BOW In sport as in life, the outcomes are not always the fairy tale endings we yearn. In the past few days, we have certainly seen that in the world of athletics. At the World Championships, we all expected to farewell the best we have ever seen - Usain Bolt with another gold in the 100 metre sprint. It was written in the script and what should happen. Enter stage right, the villain, twotime drug cheat Justin Gatlin out to prove the party pooper, and so he did. Bolt was slow out of the boxes, and despite the huge crowd in the stadium and those watching around the world willing another win, he had to settle for an unfamiliar bronze. While the fans expressed their dismay loud and clear towards Gatlin, Bolt as always was the class act. As we tried to digest why the sporting gods had served us up that disappointment, Australians and athletics followers around the world were saddened to hear that our greatest ever athlete Betty Cuthbert had lost her long battle with illness. Like Bolt on and off the track, Cuthbert proved she was a true champion. While her extraordinary courage on the track is well documented, it is for the courage she showed in her on-going struggle against multiple sclerosis that perhaps best defined her. She was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 1984, for her campaign to raise awareness of MS after she was struck down by the disease not many years after retiring from athletics. An enduring memory for many will be her appearance as one of the final torch bearers at the Sydney Olympics with fellow sprinter and close friend Raylene Boyle. It had many reaching for the tissues. Boyle perhaps best summed it up earlier this week saying Cuthbert’s medals were won with “humility and distinction.” She also voiced what many of us were thinking when she added, “A lot of athletes today could take a great deal of learning out of the way she did it.” How true that is. - Casey EVENTFUL DAY ON THE RANGE It was certainly an eventful day at the Inglewood Range with Cattle Rustlers and an attack of Clay Pidgeons. Thank heavens the cattle thieves were despatched by the winner Pat Himie, second placegetter “Wild Billfisher“ and Doc Solomon who finished in third spot but a big hand in the outcome. The rights to the remaining cattle were decided after a series of shoot-outs - “Sure Shot Simon“ won the bragging rights. Further down the range, it was the battle of the birds. Stephanie Dudgeon sent the clay feathers flying. Greg Page and Michael Dudgeon filled the minor placings. After regrouping, they were back at it again, but this time it was Michael Dudgeon who won the event with Tom Donald and Greg Page place getters. This week members face different challenges with Single Action and Rimfire Rifle 50m and 100m events scheduled on Sunday. A reminder that visitors are always welcome. COMFORT LEVELS IMPROVE Mallet players found themselves in much more comfortable surrounding this week now that the new storage shed has been completed and the playing equipment relocated. Additional covered space will also provide extra room outside to shelter from inclement weather or to simply enjoy good conditions. The association croquet players certainly 26 SOUTHERN FREE TIMES

Pat Schnoor played an excellent game and had two breaks of five while on the losing team Grace Howard also played well, scoring a break of three. Andrea Denkewitz and Sharyn Roser scored a 26-16 win against Val Shephard and Can Richardson. This was the first time Sharyn pegged out since taking up the game not too long ago, a great effort. RUNNERS ANSWER THE INVITATION Runners from across the Southern downs region enthusiastically responded to the invitation from Bullecourt Bounders to join the first of a series of street orienteering events last weekend. Last weekend’s event was held in Federation Park Warwick and this Sunday the club will host their second street run Killarney. The run will be based out of the Killarney State School. The Killarney event will be followed by a bush event on property north of Dalveen off the Old Stanthorpe/Warwick Road. Organisers are anticipating a big roll up of a good roll up of orienteers from the Southern Downs and Toowoomba will join Brisbane Orienteers for Sunday’s event. The Bullecourt Bounders Club in conjunction with Toowoomba’s Range Runners Club, is busy organising the Queensland Orienteering Championships which will be held in the Amiens Forest, on 9 and 10 September. Competitors are looking forward to the change to challenge themselves on the granite terrain this weekend in preparation for the Championships. Once again, organisers of both events welcome newcomers to join them at both of this weekend’s competition. There will be suitable course for beginners as well as the experienced orienteers and there will be suitable instruction for those new to the sport. Further details of both of these weekend events are available by visiting the website www.oq.asn.au/event-calendar or by calling 4683 6374. TRAVELLERS WELCOMED BACK Chilly conditions once again greeted gateball players on Friday morning. Back from their recent travels were two of the regular players, Bill Golding and Val Fancourt, The white team played with four players against a Red team of five. Andrea Denkewitz, Margaret Dickenson, John Draper and Val Fancourt made up the White team while their opponents on the Red team were Sharyn Roser, Bill Golding, Jenny Tunbridge, Pat Schnoor and Heather Widderick. Games throughout the day were generally close. The White team was successful in the opening game, winning 13-9 but the winners only gained the upper hand in

the final minutes of the game. Game Two was also a tussle and a low scoring game in which the Red team won 9-6 In game three, the Red team scored a one point win (11-10), thanks to some accurate shots by Heather Widderick. In the final game of the day, the tables were turned with the White team grabbing a one-point winMargaret Dickenson was the star in the final game for the White team. WIN LOCKED IN Marg Locke scored a win at Sporters on Sunday ahead of runner-up Angelo Maugeri. Run-downs went to Ian Anderson and Terry Byrnes. Ian Anderson scored the Best Gross. Paul Armstrong and took the pin shot on the third. There were no takers for the pro pin. The meat trays went the way of the winner, Marg Lock and Terry Byrnes. Players will be hoping for more pleasant conditions next Sunday when they tee off at the normal time of 8am- 8.30am. PYNE WELCOMED BACK Golf croquet numbers were bolstered by the return of Teresa Pyne who has been on vacation. Despite not having played for several weeks, Teresa was in good form and had the top two game combined score of 14. Other players who stepped up and played very well were Bev Sullivan (13), and Shirley Page (12). Both of these ladies also shot a hoop in one. Pauling Inglis, Liz Ellway and Sharyn Roser combined to play triples, and despite playing well they were defeated 11-9 the winning combination of Bev Sullivan, Dianne Wren and Justin Liddy 11. In the second game, Teresa Pyne and Elaine Brown had a 13-9 win in their game against Shirley Page and Marian Castles. Several players withdrew from the later games because of other commitments; those remaining played doubles. Sharyn Roser and Shirley page won the first game 13-8 and defeated Dianne Wren and Pauline Inglis. In the final game, Bev Sullivan and Marian Castle had an 11-8 win in their game against Teresa Pyne and Liz Ellway. TOP SIX STILL UNASWERED The TRL competition has been filled with twists and turns all season and Round 18 the final round was no different. In a sensational finish to the regular season, the top six places were not decided until the last few minutes of the round and a playoff is still needed on Wednesday night to stitch up the final spot. Valleys win bagged the Minor Premiership after they snatched a win over Wattles in a thrilling game at Platz Oval. Souths win over Gatton gave the Cowboys a chance to force their way into a playoff for the last spot in the finals, but Highfields stalled the Cowboys tilt at a finals spot when they rained on the home side’s parade at Fr Ranger Oval on Saturday

night. Gatton and Souths will now take part in a playoff on Wednesday night after both finishing the season with Wednesday night play off after Souths snuck into the finals. The TRL Ladder looks like this at the end of 18 rounds of fixtures:Toowoomba Valleys 28; Dalby 26; Pittsworth 24; Highfields 22; Wattles 18; Gatton 16; Southern Suburbs 16; Cowboys 14; Brother; 4; Oakey 4; Goondiwindi 4. The draw for week one of the TRL final series is: WATTLES DOWN BUT STILL IN WITH A CHANCE Wattles took on the competition leaders at Platz Oval on Saturday and the minor premiers put a halt to Wattles recent winning run in what was not the prettiest game of the season. The first half was a scrappy affair with both sides failing to secure the ball. Despite some poor ball handling, it was a thrilling game as the lead changed five times throughout the game. In the latter part of the second, the Roosters began to exert their authority, forcing some real coach killers from Wattles. Roosters lock Hnaloan Budden won the Hutchies Player of the Round and proved a real headache for the home side. He scored to level the game at 20-all deep in the second half, and it was the start of a try-scoring spree for his team. Lock Luke Menhennitt touched down in the 58th minute; it not only levelled the scoreboard at 20-all, it was the first of a three-try rush across a 13-minute spell that shot Valleys to a 32-20 lead. Captain Ryan Stevens slotted a field goal to put the game beyond the Warriors reach. Jake Johnson scored a late consolation try for the Warriors. The final score 33-20. The win for Valleys gave them the Minor Premiership and their ninth win on the trot. They head into the finals as warm favourites for the premiership trophy having beaten all of the top sides this season. Wattles are certainly not out of contention- they finished the season in fifth place, and this weekend take on Highfields in a replay of their round 17 clash. In a blow to their finals chances, Matt Duggan appeared to suffer a season-ending knee injury in the game, and there are also serious concerns for Gardner, Jarred Bradfield and Brodie Frizzel. The visitors made it a clean sweep with wins in both Reserve Grade (56-4) and under-18 (78-6). A GRADE: Valleys 33 (Luke Menhinnitt, Johnson Viane, Anisi Finau, Marc McGrady, Steven Rodgers, Jacob Ryals tries Brett Seymour 4 goals) defeated Wattles 26 (Ty Gardner 2, Matt Duggan, James Johnson, Brenden Wilson tries Matt Duggan 3 goals) KILLARNEY SAVE BEST FOR LAST The BRL double header in Killarney last weekend saw the home side pull out their best performance of the season for their last home game as they upset the more fancied Tenterfield side 30-26 in a thriller. Jamie Watts was perhaps the best on ground but found plenty of support from his team mates. If Killarney can field a similar team throughout the upcoming finals series, they will ask some serious questions of their opposition. In the earlier game on the programme, the Gremlins were simply outclassed and outplayed by the more experienced Inglewood side. The young Gremlins outfit to their credit kept tyring, but the roosters put on a master class sending an ominous warning that they are serious about defending their premiership crown as they marched to a .90-0 score line. freetimes.com.au

This weekend the double header action moves to MacIntyre Oval at Inglewood for the last fixture round of the season. Tenterfield will play Stanthorpe in the first game, and Inglewood will test Killarney in the main game. The finals series begin in two weeks with the grand final to be decided on 26 August. COWBOYS BOW OUT IN THRILLER Warwick Cowboys took on Highfields in front of a big home crowd on Saturday night, but the Hawks proved the party spoilers and ended the Cowboys hopes of a spot in the finals. After a scrappy performance against Wattles in their previous game, Highfields made amends on Saturday. Highfields winger Aaron Hooper opened the scoring using pace to and pit the visitors on the board after only four minutes. Warwick was quick to hit back with the first of three tries to winger Kai Etherington. In an entertaining clash, the score was 8-all after 26 minutes, but Highfields showed plenty of class, scoring three quick tries and led 26-8 at half-time. Highfields looked to fall into a flat spot in the second half, and with their season in the balance the Cowboys hit back to get to within six points of Highfields. The scores 26-20 in Highfields favour with seven minutes left in the game. Speedster Aaron Hooper showed plenty of fancy footwork in the game and crossed for this third try soon after to give the visitors a handy lead. Cameron Sweedman put an end to the Cowboys dreams of a finals berth when he closed out the game, scoring a late try taking the score to 36-20. The Cowboys never stopped trying and winger Kai Etherington was one of the side’s best, scoring a hat-trick in the final game of the season. Darren Pettiford, Craig Donn and Paul Cantwell also worked hard for Warwick.

The Cowboys had wins in the two other games, defeating Highfields in the under18s, 20-10 and a win in Reserve Grade sees the team playing in a knock out game against Souths on Wednesday night as they fight for a spot in the finals competition. A GRADE: Highfields 36 (Aaron Hooper 3, Nick Bainbridge 2, Josh Birch, Cameron Sweedman tries Jarrod Lee 4 goals) defeated Warwick 20 (Kai Etherington 3, Mick Bloomfield tries Dan Watson 2 goals) TIES ALL ROUND The August monthly medal and putting competition was decided last weekend in Stanthorpe, and golfers played in nearperfect conditions. Thanks to Gino’s Floor Coverings for their ongoing support of this event. Ties (and not the neck variety) were the order of the day. Keith Barnett and Hayden Smith both returned nett 67 for the round. It was Keith Barnett who swooped on the main prize after a countback and Smith had to settle for the runners-up spot. There was another Smith featuring in the next tie for best gross. Wes Smith and Stephen Kay both returned scores of 78 for their rounds and shared the balls on offer. The ties continued as Tom Fittock and Matt Watterworth shared the spoils for the best pitting performance of the round - 26. The pin shots were a little more straight forward - Richard Reardon at three, Hayden Smith at 12 and Keith Jones at 17. Pro-pins claimed by Hayden Smith at 1/10, Rino Piovesan at 5/14 and Matt Waterworth at 9/18. The Ladies event was more individual as Madeline Jarman collected the ladies medal with nett 72, Lyn Ludlow accepting best gross of 96 for her round. Newcomer Annelle Batterham who has only recently joined the club and was playing in her first Saturday competition returned the least putts of 31 for the round. There were no takers for the ladies pin at

three but Lyn Ludlow held 12 and Madeline Jarman had best approach at 17. In the run down, a ball to scores of nett 71 and better for the men and nett 79 for the ladies. This Saturday Tom and Tric Fittock combine with Madeline Jarman to sponsor the club’s single stroke event. There is a time sheet on the board at the clubhouse and tee off is from 11am.

Bluey Pup – I’m QueBlu – I’m with the Gladiator – what do you mean you don’t give a damm – how about the “Blue’s mascot”? RUSTY WHO? WOOF We don’t often read of Senior NRL football clubs, their boards or their owners supporting junior rugby league unless, of course, it is to raid their enviable war chests of $$$. Bunnies’ owner Russell Crowe showed recently that he is cut from different cloth, rocking up unannounced to a junior league game at his local suburban ground in Sydney. He might be the owner of the Bunnies, the Gladiator, an uber successful movie star, but it didn’t cut the mustard with the gate official at Mascot Oval. Crowe was in the company of QueBlu, a blue heeler pup. The stern super officious female gate official turned away Crowe and his trusty

CASEY O’CONNOR

companion at entrance apparently not recognising him. As the pair got the cold shoulder at the gate, a fellow dog owner waltzed past the official and Crowe declaring her poodle was a “team mascot”. Embarrassment was averted when a friend came to the rescue, pup sitting while his owner watched the game sans dog. Crowe quipped later that he preferred his car upholstery without bite marks declaring the blue from the bush was a bit small to leave unattended in the car. (The official would probably have called the RSPCA in that case). Crowe said later, “He’s a blue heeler. That should be revered in this state. Especially in league circles.” And NSW wonder why they can’t win Origin. Now if you rocked up to a QRL junior league game with a cane toad on a lead, I doubt you would have to leave it in the car. Wonder if the official has been busy watching reruns of Gladiator and Beautiful Minds committing Crowe’s face to memory. JOCKEYING FOR POSITIONS IN EARNEST Just four rounds of NRL fixtures remain, and the fight for positions within the eight is on in earnest while those who have missed the cut look likely to make nuisance value of themselves to tipsters. But could someone at the NRL “please explain” to fans why we have to endure 6pm starts to Friday night games. If you are in Sydney, you would be no chance of getting there for kick off. Even if you are at home on the Southern Downs, it’s hard to be settled in front of the TV in time for the game. ●

K&S Water narrowly beat Southern Downs Realty by 3-2. The Warwick Colts had a narrow win with 2-1 vs Garden City, and that was enough to claim the minor premiership. Reserves lost 4-0 to Rockville. Everyone is invited, which includes present and past bowlers and friends, so let’s hope to see you all there. These morning teas are in place of the Monthly Ladies meetings the club was used to have before it became a One Tier Club. It would be very nice to catch up socially once a month.
