■ Council is now up to plan C but noisy mynas are sitting tight...

Driven bird batty By Casey Neill New netting could give meddlesome mynas their marching orders from a Hallam nature strip. Charles Avenue resident Vera Mezentseff said the noisy Indian myna bird flock was nesting in the tree outside her neighbour’s property, disturbing her sleep and wellbeing. She went to the City of Casey for help and at its 6 June meeting councillor Wayne Smith successfully moved for action against the 150-odd introduced pest species as a “matter of extreme urgency”. Ms Mezentseff said plan A was to set up traps and plan B was to trim the trees. “That didn’t work,” she said. “Now we’re up to plan C.”

“Prior to me, neighbours were trying to hose them down but as soon as you put the hose away they’re back at it. “Rubber snakes in the tree hasn’t worked. Throwing stones at the tree hasn’t worked. “I’ve been using cotton balls to try to sleep and not to be woken by them. “In the afternoon you have to put your TV louder to not hear them.” Cr Smith said the situation was the council’s responsibility because it planted the tree. “I’m just glad that there’s a resolution. We’re working hard to try and fix it,” he said. He said audio recordings of the birds in full voice was “shocking”. “You can’t live with it,” he said.

branch in the tree was covered in bird poo, and the footpath also wore the excrement. “So it is a health issue as well. They do carry diseases,” she said. She said the council pledged to monitor the situation once the net was in place. “We’re hoping that they don’t decide to jump in someone’s backyard and sit in their tree,” she said. “It’s a pretty big project but I can’t do this. “If you have a restless night and then the birds are at it at 5.30am, it’s like they’re ruling your ife.” She said development in surrounding suburbs seemed to be driving the birds into larger packs. “It looks like this area is being invaded, I suppose,” she said.

The council planned to install netting over the tree on Wednesday 16 August but wild winds caused a delay. “It is a major problem,” Ms Mezentseff said. She’s lived there almost two years. “In the morning they’ll come in say 5.30am to 6am and the whole tree is infested with these birds,” she said. “They go to about 7am. “In the afternoon they start up again. They fly in about 5.45pm. “During the night if they’re disturbed they’ll go off again. “It doesn’t matter if you’re sick or it’s the weekend, they just fly in and they will not stop chirping and screeching for that whole hour.” Ms Mezentseff said every leaf and every

Across the generations, family tree’s new branch A Hallam family brought together its eldest and youngest members for the first time on Saturday 12 August. Marie Doucas told the Journal News that Katherine Moustaizis and her husband Aristithe, now deceased, came to Australia from Egypt in the early 1970s with their daughter, Evangeline. Katherine is now 90 and lived in Dandenong for 20 years before moving to the Coptic Village Hostel in Hallam two years ago. She has five grandchildren in Chris, Angela, Alex, Andrew and Michael; five great-grandchildren in Gabrielle, Mary, Helen, Sebastian and Thomas; and one great, great-granddaughter, Ruby. Anastasia Doucas and her husband Sebastian are grandparents to Katherine’s great-grandchildren and great grandparents to Ruby. “They have lived in Dandenong and Narre Warren for 40 years,” Marie said. “They arrived in Australia in 1968 when Chris was one year old and then went on to have Angela, who passed away in 2009.” Marie married Chris, and they’re parents to

Anastasia Doucas, Katherine Moustaizis, and Chris and Gabrielle Doucas with baby Ruby. 171430 Gabrielle and Sebastian and have lived in Narre Warren and Cranbourne North for the past 30 years. “Gabrielle and her partner Michael welcomed Ruby into the family on 11 May 2017,” Marie said. “She was born premature and spent the first 13 weeks in Monash NICU and Special Care Nursery and was finally able to come home on 2 August. “It was a very emotional day and full of happiness for the family to be able to take Ruby to meet her great great-grandmother.”

Weapons uncovered in blitz Police arrested a man, uncovered weapons and fined unlicensed drivers during an operation in Doveton. Endeavour Hills Police Station members ran an automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) site in Doveton with the Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday 15 August. Despite poor weather and light traffic, police checked 1708 vehicles. They impounded one car and identified six drivers who were behind the wheel while disqualified, unlicensed or suspended. Police identified eight unregistered vehicles, arrested a man wanted for breaching bail and driving while disqualified, issued three defect notices and one notice for possessing a controlled weapon, and intercepted 83 vehicles with Sheriff’s warrants.

Car park arrest over robbery A man accused of armed robbery has been arrested by police detectives in a Fountain Gate shopping centre car park. The 24-year-old Dandenong North man has been charged with 16 offences in Melbourne’s South-East over a two-week period, police say. The charges also include aggravated burglary, theft and weapon offences committed between 20 July and 2 August. The man was arrested by Casey CIU detectives about 1pm on 15 August. Police then seized property while executing two search warrants in Dandenong North and Dandenong.

Primary school’s bicycle highways for traffic safety A new traffic course will teach Greater Dandenong kids to be safer near roads and on their bikes. Dandenong West Primary School received $7800 as part of the TAC Community Road Safety Grants Program to build the asphalt course. It has road conditions that mimic real traffic so children can learn about road safety in a simulated environment. Three local kindergartens will also use the course as part of road and bike education programs. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams launched the facility on Thursday 17 August. “It’s a fun way to get our young children active, while teaching them and their families how to be safe on their bikes and our roads,“ she said. “I encourage local community groups and organisations with an idea to promote road safety, to apply for the next round of the TAC’s community grants program.” Dandenong West Primary’s Ivan Araujo said the school had been running a bike education program for older students to encourage them to ride to and from school safely. “A lot of our children walk alone to school as well,” he said. “There’s been a number of traffic incidences around the school. “There’s high traffic volume and because of the factories over the road there was also a lot of industrial vehicles. “We were teaching bike ed but not providing a safe place to practice riding.”

In Brief

Police car rammed A Narre Warren man is facing a string of charges after allegedly throwing a beer can at police and ramming a police car while evading an intercept in Mulgrave. The 20-year-old was seen by police driving erratically in a Magna on Princes Highway, Mulgrave about 9.50pm on 14 August. He then evaded police attempts to intercept him and threw the can at the police vehicle. A police officer received a minor injury when the Magna allegedly side-swiped a police car stopped in the Magna’s path on a service slip road on the highway. The vehicle was again spotted travelling in erratic fashion and entering a take-away drivethrough at Springvale Junction about 10.10pm. When police tried to speak to the driver, he allegedly tried to drive off and struck part of the food outlet and a stationary car.

Three men in road rage fight Horrific vision emerged this week showing an “awful” roadside punch-on in Dandenong South. Glenda Powell told Tom Elliott on radio station 3AW that she was on her way to work about 8am on Tuesday 15 August when she happened across the assault on Frankston-Dandenong Road. “I saw two guys punching the crap out of another guy and thought ‘this is terrible’,” she said. Ms Powell told 3AW that she started taking video and then called police. “I was shaking for about two hours,” she said. Victoria Police was unable to shed any light on the outcome of the incident.

Pictures: STEWART CHAMBERS Junior students were only completely a halfday riding course once a year. “That’s not enough. They need constant practice,” Mr Araujo said. “We’ve got a community hub as well that will have access to that resource. “Kindergartens have accessed it already. They’ve brought their trikes and been around the course.”

Principal’s teaching journey pride By Casey Neill John Hurley started his teaching career 55 years ago at a small school in the Strzelecki Ranges. He was 19 years old. There was no electricity, no phones and 28 students. “It was fantastic. I loved it,” he said. The Thomas Mitchell Primary School principal relied on a scholarship to finish his own schooling. “My parents were not at all wealthy,” he said. “I think it was 50 pounds at the time.” Mr Hurley was “very, very proud” that Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan recognised his subsequent service to education with a presentation at the Endeavour Hills school on Friday 11 August. “It was a surprise - Luke coming out and having an assembly and all that sort of thing,” he said. “He wasn’t asked to do it or anything like that. He organised to come along and he presented me with a lovely plaque and also a personal book on my favourite football team, Collingwood Football Club. “The kids were spectacularly fantastic. “The whole 800 of them were there, as quiet as can be when I went into the assembly area. “After school, the staff got together and I had no idea about it, and put on a lovely party for me at school after school.” Mr Hurley is in his 26th year at Thomas Mitchell, having come on board as founding principal in 1991 after heading up Cranbourne Primary School. “For me the ultimate satisfaction for a job would be to start your own school, so I decided that was what I wanted to do,” he said. “There were three schools opening at the one time. “There was Coral Park, Thomas Mitchell and the other was Maramba. “I did some research and the information I came up with was that this would be the most interesting school to start - most interesting because of the multicultural community.”

Principal John Hurley.

This multiculturalism has kept him at the school. “They’re just wonderful families and kids because they get on so well together,” he said. “There’s more than 70 nationalities. “It’s just lovely to see them getting on so well and learning from each other and teaching me lots of things “There’s so much that I don’t know and I’ve travelled a fair bit - they can tell me so much. “I’ve met wonderful people on the way. “I’m still in touch with kids I taught 50 years ago.”

Looking Back

Compiled by Dandenong and District Historical Society

100 years ago 16 August 1917 Municipal candidates To the Editor Sir, The near approach of the shire elections gives rise to varying thoughts when we consider the appeal made by the director of recruiting, the Hon D McKinnon, to married and single men alike: “That in their dire hour of your nation’s peril we want you men to take your place at the breach and fill the gaps of your comrades who are languishing tired and weary, fighting for home and honour”. Not only is this appeal made with all the grave responsibility of our local authorities, but it is re-echoed by our soldiers, officers and men alike. But, you say, what has this to do with shire elections? That is just where the sting comes in, when

we consider that most of our councillors are old and tried members of their respective councils, men who have done good works, as Cr James remarked at the last meeting of the Berwick council. Here I might draw the electors’ attention to the fact that most of these councillors, who are being forced to an election, are either too old or have been rejected from military service, they have an election forced on them by men who are quite capable to take their place as a unit in the AIF.

50 years ago 22 August 1967 Dandenong to be Fountain City? An attractive fountain in a central park in Dandenong is envisaged by the Rotary Club of Dandenong which is prepared to co-operate with the Dandenong council to build and finance it. The club was prepared to submit a prelimi-

nary design for the fountain and to provide $1500 towards the cost on a dollar for dollar basis. It suggested the fountain should be built in the park on the corner of Foster Street and Princes Highway.

His comments came last Monday when the council adopted its community grants program for 1997-98. The recipients were selected by a taskforce of council officers and six of the city’s 11 councillors.

18 August 1997 Council provides generous grants Greater Dandenong council is the most generous in providing community grants compared with its neighbours. This year it has awarded a total of $1.4 million to 240 community groups compared with Kingston’s $590,000 and Casey’s $223,310. The Mayor of Greater Dandenong, Greg Harris, said the city was totally committed to community groups and would try to increase the allocation each year.

20 August 2012 Danger at level crossing Pedestrians and drivers running the gauntlet at the Springvale level crossing were targeted by police last week. Acting Superintendent Charlie Allen said the level crossing was in the state’s top 15 for injuries. He urged pedestrians and drivers not to cross the tracks when the gates closed and warning signals were operating. Last year a tip truck was struck by a train at the Springvale Road crossing.

No joking, so hot they’re smokin’ By Casey Neill David Freeman the butcher and David Freeman the chef are smoking salmon like no one else. The father and son duo use a process that’s “completely different to what everyone else does”. “It’s ours, nobody else’s, and we’re proud of it,” David junior said. He set up Keysborough-based The Melbourne Pantry after spotting a hole in the smoked salmon market. He worked under Michelin star chef Alan Garth in the UK and from him learnt the traditional smoking methods he employs today. “We do stuff that’s more of the English style,” David junior said. He moved to Australia from Birmingham, England, in 2000. “My sister works in computers. She came over here before all of us. She was offered a job over here,” he said.

EAT LOCAL, DINE GLOBAL He phoned her one Christmas and she’d just been scuba diving and was heading to a beach barbecue. “I’m looking out of a window in an apartment. It’s black, it’s raining, it’s cold. “I made up my mind there and then.” David junior worked at The Big Group for four years while developing his salmon. “When I started to get a little bit of traction, by that point dad was over here,” he said. They added bacon to their product offerings

after David senior spat out a bite of a bacon sandwich. “We produce the best bacon you’ll ever eat,” David junior said. “We do it differently to everybody else.” Another different offering from The Melbourne Pantry is smoked yogurt, developed with chef Matt Wilkinson. It’s closer to a solid than a liquid. “Matthew does a roasted carrot salad with the smoked yogurt,” David junior said. There’s also smoked maple syrup - used on carrots at The Independent in Gembrook - and smoked tomatoes. “Chop them up with spring onions, rocket, cucumber - like a salsa - and put it with some swordfish,” David junior advised. “It rocks the part, I’ll tell you.” The Melbourne Pantry supplies delicatessens, markets and restaurants. Police blitz becomes prominent By Cam Lucadou-Wells Police have launched a major traffic blitz to counter the high number of lives lost on roads in Melbourne’s south-east. Since 11 August, police have pooled highway patrol resources into Greater Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia as part of Operation Prominent. They have also sent a salvo of road safety video posts out on local EyeWatch Facebook pages. The operation comes in the wake of a tragic two-car crash outside Lighthouse Christian College in Cranbourne East on 10 August in which a mother and her teenage daughter were killed. “On a human level, it’s desperately sad,” police southern metro region division 3’s Inspector Tom Nairn said. “You can’t go away from those events without being affected by them. “Professionally it reinforces the importance of what we do in terms of traffic enforcement. “It’s these type of events that we’re working very hard to prevent.” In its first days, the operation has netted three drink drivers, four drug drivers and 15 unlicensed and disqualified drivers. Officers have also detected 157 speeding drivers, including a male P-plate driver allegedly travelling at 179km/h in a 100km/h zone on Ballarto Road, Cardinia, about 4.58pm on 14 August. He is expected to be charged on summons with driving at a dangerous speed, failing to display P-plates and driving a prohibited probationary vehicle. His car was impounded for 30 days, costing him $972. A female driver was also fined $595 and lost six demerit points when caught speeding at 110km/h in a 70km/h zone on Beaconsfield-Emerald Road, Dewhurst, about 5pm on 12 August. During the operation, police booked four drivers illegally using a mobile phone, four for not wearing seat belts and detected 18 unregistered vehicles. In the region, 18 people have died on the road this year - the highest of any police division in Victoria.

Police officers Ben James, Luke Bull, Harry Lazarou and Andrew Cusworth are keeping an eye out on the roads. 171785 Eleven of those fatalities could be attributed to poor decision making and driver behaviour, Inspector Nairn said. Police would use every measure such as impoundment and dragging people to the courts to crack down on these high-risk drivers, he said. They are a different cohort than the organised

drive while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, they’re making a choice to speed or drive when they’re not authorised to do so. “Tragically these choices can result in people losing their lives and leaving families and friends without their loved ones.” The highly-visible police operation continues until Saturday 19 August.

Scholarship in Morland’s honour By Cam Lucadou-Wells Former Casey mayor Mick Morland could be set to be immortalised in an annual community scholarship in his name. Casey council is set to consult with the Morland family on how best to recognise the late councillor, who was fatally struck by a car in Berwick in June. In a motion on 15 August, Casey will also seek to name a suitable facility or feature after Mr Morland. The council will also seek to donate $25,000 to the philanthropic Casey Cardinia Foundation towards establishing a Mick Morland scholarship towards a purpose reflecting his interests. The donation would come from the council’s 2016/’17 surplus. Cr Susan Serey, who was Mr Morland’s most recent ward colleague, said it was an apt way to

recognise his 25 years of community service. Cr Amanda Stapledon said it was the most constructive way to pay tribute. “I think Mick would definitely approve.” Mayor Sam Aziz said the council would discuss the plan with the Morland clan to ensure their wishes were considered. Since 2003, the Casey Cardinia Foundation has distributed more than $430,000 to community groups through its annual grants program. Foundation director Paul Thomas welcomed the fitting tribute to Mr Morland. “It’s a great initiative by the City of Casey remembering a man held in high esteem and who contributed significantly to the local community. “It’s a recognition of all the hard work that Mick did with the community. “It will be a great way to provide more assistance to the community through the foundation.”

Mick Morland celebrated when a $10 million federal grant was awarded for Bunjil Place.

Three community clubs will soon have life-saving defibrillators on-site. Doveton’s Freeway Comets Swim Club, Endeavour Hills Fire Soccer Club and Riding with a Disability’s Doveton Branch were among 301 successful applicants in the Defibrillators for Sporting Clubs and Facilities Program’s third round. The new devices will appear on Ambulance Victoria’s database so triple-zero operators can direct callers to them when emergency strikes. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams announced on Monday 14 August that the clubs would also receive a training package. The State Government is rolling out 1000 defibrillators to clubs and facilities across Victoria, and there are still 100 up for grabs. “This equipment saves lives. If any local clubs do not have a defibrillator yet I encourage them to contact me for details about how to apply to the program,” Ms Williams said. Without a defibrillator close by, the survival rate for sudden cardiac arrest is between two and five per cent. When a defibrillator is used within the first few minutes, the survival rate can rise to 70 per cent.

It’s none of our business but… Greater Dandenong Mayor Jim Memeti rubbed shoulders with movie stars at the governor’s house as part of the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM). He said the house was the biggest in the southern hemisphere. Cr Memeti also attended a red carpet event for the festival alongside a former Miss World and other Bollywood favourites. “I didn’t recognise who any of them were, but I looked them up on Google and saw they were the real deal,” he told the Monday 14 August council meeting. Dandenong’s Drum Theatre screened two films as part of the IFFM - Dr Rakhmabai on Tuesday 15 August and Dangal on Friday 18 August. A hungry driver came unstuck in Springvale for trying to eat behind the wheel. As part of operation Prominent, Greater Dandenong Highway Patrol officers saw a probationary driver traveling on Westall Road, Springvale, on Wednesday 16 August. He was driving at the 80km/h speed limit - but was using both hands to unwrap his sandwich for lunch. Police issued the driver a $238 fine. Police reminded drivers to have both hands on the steering wheel and to pay attention while driving. A lunch with Chyka Keebaugh inspired one Greater Dandenong councillor to check out her reality TV appearance. Cr Tim Dark told the Monday 14 August council meeting that he watch the first season of Real Housewives of Melbourne following Chyka’s guest speaking spot at a SEBN event at Atura Dandenong on Friday 28 July. “It is an excellent show,” he said. “Janet is arguing with one of the other cast members. “It’s a very entertaining show and highly addictive.” Cr Sean O’Reilly said the show “bears no reflection to our community” but Cr Dark interjected, pointing out that Pettifleur Berenger was born in Sri Lanka.

Springvale’s parking meters are no longer in operation, but are still on the streets. At the Monday 14 August meeting, councillor Youhorn Chea asked when they’d be removed. The council decided to abandon the meters and discontinue their use in March following complaints from traders and shoppers. They were installed in November 2015. City planning, design and amenity director Jody Bosman said the council had managed to sell a few of the machines and they’d be going shortly. But the council doesn’t have the storage space for the rest at the moment, so they’ll stay on the Springvale kerbs. Greater Dandenong is in the running for several Keep Australia Beautiful Sustainable Cities Awards. It’s a finalist in the Sustainable City of the Year and Sustainable City Council awards. Athol Road Primary School was shortlisted for the Active Schools Award. The Springvale South school was named the municipality’s most sustainable at this year’s Greater Dandenong Sustainability Awards. The Australian Vietnamese Women’s Association, which is also a finalist at the Sustainability Awards, is in the running for the Community Action and Leadership Award for its Sustainable Living Project. Dandenong business Biofuel Innovations is also a finalist. The Sustainable Cities Awards will be announced on Thursday 21 September. Dandenong’s seagull plague has attracted plenty of attention in the media over the past week. The Journal broke news of the pesky problem in its 13 July edition, reporting that easy access to food and breeding sites appeared to be the cause. Greater Dandenong Council was advising business owners to remove possible food sources, including waste, and block access to breeding areas such as roof spaces.

Future Metals Recycling is investing heavily in its Cardinia operation.

Waste comes under new management As residents become more and more conscious of their personal impact on the environment, it’s important people have confidence in local waste management services. Operated for more than a decade by the local Atkins family, the Cardinia Waste and Recyclers transfer station, located just off the Princes Highway in Pakenham, has been acquired by leading Victorian scrap metal company Future Metals Recycling. With depots in Dandenong, Hallam and Shepparton, privately owned Future Metals Recycling is committed to reducing its environmental impact throughout its comprehensive waste management activities. It is also an accredited carbon neutral business. Managing director Tyrone Landsman said that since taking over the Cardinia Waste and Recyclers transfer station and Pak Bin Hire in late 2016, Future Metals Recycling had modernised

all operating equipment and made substantial efficiency improvements to bring it into line with its sustainability policy. In exciting news for the region, the company has plans to significantly improve the infrastructure of the transfer station over the next 12 months. “We will be spending more than $3 million on the project and, importantly, it will create local jobs during the construction phase,” Mr Landsman said. “The Atkins family was very involved in the community and we’re committed to keeping that local involvement going.” Future Metals Recycling currently recovers and recycles a large proportion of waste coming on site and the planned Cardinia Waste and Recyclers project will further increase its recycling ability to reduce waste going to landfill.

Works have begun on a high-technology school in Berwick to prime about 21,000 high-school students for the future. Deputy Premier James Merlino helped turn the first sod of works at the Casey Tech School site on 15 August. The appointment of experienced teacher and curriculum leader Ben Jenkinson as the school’s inaugural director was also announced. The school will skill-up students from 21 secondary schools in the region in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) for “high-tech jobs of the future”. “Seventy-five per cent of new jobs will require skills in maths and science,” Mr Merlino said. “These are the skills we have to deliver to our young people.” The Casey school will be the largest of the 10 schools built across Victoria as part of a $128 million project. It will be a free-of-charge resource that’s accessible to 21,000 students a year as part of their schooling. They will be taught biomedical technology, health and medical tech, and high-tech manufacturing, with help from Chisholm Institute and industry allies such as Successful Endeavours and St John of God Hospital. VCE students will receive masterclasses in either physics or chemistry, Mr Merlino said. The two-storey building with a biomed lab, virtual reality lab as well as video and digital media studios will be a shared hub built on “neutral turf ” at Chisholm Institute on Kangan Drive. BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST

Power cost rises threaten jobs By Casey Neill New cash to help businesses boost energy efficiency is welcome but “won’t fix the root cause of the issue here”. That issue is electricity and gas prices rising by more than 250 per cent, forcing manufacturers to shed workers or put up their prices and risk losing customers. Energy bills are topping $1 million at South East Melbourne Manufacturers Alliance (SEMMA) member Ace Metal Treatment Services, general manager David Karney told the Journal. Energy, Environment and Climate Change Minister Lily D’Ambrosio announced a $1.76 million Better Commercial Buildings grant on Friday 11 August during a meeting with SEMMA. She said the grants would help to identify and

implement improvements and measure success. Mr Karney said the program was helpful. Ace’s electricity price has more than tripled from its previous contract. “Realistically, when the gas price has tripled, it’s not about using less energy,” he said. “For a small company, a sudden and unexpected rise in energy costs of that amount is very hard to handle,” Mr Karney said. He’s looking to lay off staff to keep the business afloat. “When companies overseas can buy Australian gas cheaper than we can buy it - that is our understanding - simply improving our efficiency isn’t going to make us competitive,” he said. Ace is a contract heat treater. “So we take components that other people

have manufactured, across a wide range of industries, and then we heat treat them,” he said. “We’ll harden them to make them stronger.” Products include bolts, gears, clips and springs. They end up in Tesla cars, Australian Defence Force products and more. Mr Karney said Ace had sought quotes from other electricity suppliers, directly and through brokers, and found very little price difference. “With gas there’s a limited number of suppliers that will actually quote,” he said. “We need a Commonwealth Government long-term plan. “At the moment there is no major investment in new electricity generation from non-gas sources and there’s still moratoriums across much of Australia on gas exploration.

“There’s no bipartisan desire, it would seem, to actually ensure that there is consistent and lowcost supply.” SEMMA executive officer Adrian Boden said Ms D’Ambrosio was “very receptive” as businesses spoke to the 250 to 350 per cent increases in energy costs occurring across the board. “The key issue what that one of the things that worried almost everybody around the table was the potential lack of understanding of the level of crisis that manufacturing’s in with these increases,” he said. On the Better Commercial Buildings cash, Mr Boden said it was nice to have $1.97 million “but I have 11,000 manufactures in my back yard”. “There are businesses that really very clearly said there is no way that they can survive without some form of redundancies,” he said.

Job seekers told how to speak employers’ recruitment language Young migrants have unique capabilities to offer workplaces, employment experts told a recent forum. South East Local Learning and Employment Network (SELLEN) hosted the migrant youth employment forum at the Dandenong Civic Centre on Tuesday 15 August. The panel included Trent Lethlean from Woolworths, Bunnings operations manager Darren Moulder, Hudson Recruitment’s Alice Powell, McDonald’s manager Nikki Peut, Jayco HR manager Donna Paxton, and Bendigo Bank’s Mili Thurgood and Laura McBride. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams served as moderator. SELLEN’s Jennifer Ebdon said panellists told the audience to appreciate that they had unique capabilities to offer, particularly language skills. “Both Bunnings and Woolworths particularly value these qualities,” she said. “Woolworths is now recruiting to reflect the local community - the new Keysborough South store is a showcase of this new diverse recruitment policy.” Ms Ebdon said Bendigo Bank also looked for multi-lingual staff. “None of the companies advised applicants to change their names or make them sound more English on their resumes,” she said. “Exceptions would be if you have a preferred name or to add the pronunciation of your name to your resume.” The panel said to use key words from the vacancy advertisement in applications. “Many larger companies use software to filter and score applications so to have the best chance of getting an interview make sure you include keywords in your resume, cover letter and application forms,” Ms Ebdon said. Ms Powell advised the young people to include a copy of their visa, residency status or work rights with their resume so there was certainty around

Mr Lethlean advised applicants to visit stores with a resume after applying online to show enthusiasm. Ms Paxton advised that interview preparation was critical and urged guests to be on time, prepare questions to ask the interviewer and research the company. For job applicants without workplace experience, Ms Peut said McDonald’s valued eye contact and the ability to have a conversation and at Woolworths Mr Lethlean said a positive attitude, enthusiasm and passion for customer service stood out. On group interviews, the panel advised appli-

cants to get involved with group activity, highlight how they would deal with customers, and demonstrate safety awareness if possible. “They’re looking for team players so look for ways to involve others in the activity, especially if they seem quiet or shy,” Ms Ebdon said. Panellists said they did not officially use social media to check applicants but many recruiters did. “It is common for companies to monitor social media to see what their staff are posting about the company online,” Ms Ebdon said. The advice was to remember that once something was posted online it was discoverable forever.

Guest speaker Rabia Adnan from the City of Greater Dandenong Young Leaders group has only been in Australia for six months. She shared advice for new arrivals wanting to establish themselves in Australia and increase their employability. Ms Adnan said it was important to connect to community, improve English skills and to join organisations and enrol in work readiness courses to make friends and increase skills. She urged the audience to overcome their fear of asking questions. “It’s the only way to learn,” she said. “Do not give up. Do not lose hope.”

In partnership with the Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) and the Australian Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC), the ATO has developed resources that align to the Australian Curriculum for students in years seven to 10. “Understanding tax and super is an important skill for young Australians and we are pleased it is now part of the Australian curriculum,” Assistant Commissioner Kath Anderson said. “We want to make it easy for teachers to help their students learn about the tax and super system, so we’ve designed a range of resources for them to use which are available from our website. “Teachers can learn about how our resources align to the Australian Curriculum through ACARA’s new Curriculum Connections. “Our educational resources include Tax Super and You, an online teaching resource containing lesson plans and interactive activities, as well in-

Partners join up for food relief By Narelle Coulter Dandenong South charity Avocare will handle approximately 80,000 kilograms of extra fresh food a month after entering into a new partnership with food relief charity Second Bite. The announcement was made at a networking breakfast held at Avocare’s Zilla Court warehouse on Friday 11 August. The Mad Hatter’s themed breakfast was organised by work-for-the-dole participants to thank Avocare’s many community partners and sponsors. Avocare is one of the largest job training providers in the city. At any one time 100 people are involved in its many work-for-the-dole training programs. Avocare also supports 100 charities with food relief in partnership with Foodbank, Victoria’s largest and oldest food relief organisation. A massive 1.26 mega tonnes of rescued food passed through Avocare’s warehouse last year. CEO of Foodbank Victoria Dave McNamara said he enjoyed working with Avocare founder Trish Keilty and her team as they shared his organisation’s respect for the dignity of those who receive food. “Trish is someone whose heart is similar to mine. She is passionate about people and the community,” Mr McNamara said. “The number of people she has helped is incredible. “If you want a safe happy community you need to support Trish and her team. Food is a basic human right. Trish is making sure the Dandenong community is well fed.” Pastor Keith Vethaak collects food weekly from Avocare to distribute to “hundreds of families” in Narre Warren. He said many of the people helped by his church’s charity Transit were the working poor who were unable to afford rent, bills, school expenses and food. “We are so blessed in our partnership with Avocare. We collect five tonnes of food every week to

We couldn’t survive without Avocare. “We give $150 worth of food to families every time they pick up. It’s enough to keep them out of trouble.” Greater Dandenong Mayor Jim Memeti praised Ms Keilty and her team. “Trish has made a difference to so many

members of our community since 2003,” he said. “Sadly access to affordable, healthy food is not always available to members of our community.” he added, citing low incomes, lack of transport and unfamiliarity with Western food as contributing factors. “The council is proud to work with Avocare

and we will continue to support this wonderful organisation into the future.” Ms Keilty described Avocare as a “charity with a heart”. “Charity begins at home. Dandenong is our home.”

SPORT Skipper moves to repair damage By Nick Creely Losing two of the great club cricketers that Victoria has to offer in the off-season is sure to cause inevitable short-term pain for Dandenong District Cricket Association powerhouse Cranbourne. The shock defections of premiership skipper Steven Spoljaric (Springvale South) and Matt Chasemore (Berwick) has left a gaping hole of more than 1000 runs and 40 wickets for the 2017/18 season. But under the guidance of the club’s new Turf 1 skipper Lucas Ligt, the club will turn to the future and rebuild the culture from the lowest to the highest grades, and is prepared to stay patient in the course. “The young guys are really excited about the idea of the club being up to them - a lot of the kids were nervous when we heard the announcement (Spoljaric and Chasemore leaving) because they thought the club might be chasing more players again,” he said. “Since they’ve learnt that the club is backing them in and rebuilding over a few years - similar to what Hallam’s done - there has been genuine excitement. “Pre-season attendance has been up there with the best I’ve seen in four years - we’ve had three nets at Icon full and people haven’t been able to bowl because we’ve had too many people - there is a great feeling around the place.” But he admits the loss of the gun duo, as well as keeper Jordan Cleland to Berwick, came as a bit of a shock. “Losing Jordan (Cleland) as well wasn’t ideal but, honestly, that’s fine if he wants to go but Chasemore and Spoljaric are a bit different obvi-

Lucas Ligt is ready to lead the Eagles into a new era. 163598 ously,” he said. And while Ligt, 25, expects there to be growing pains for his young side, the club has set goals for what it expects to achieve in the 2017/18 season in Turf 1.

“We don’t want to get relegated obviously, and we’ve picked about five sides that we feel we can beat if we play properly - the core group has already spoken about the goals this season, and we just want to play a really basic and smart brand of

Stars of the future show off their promise for draft By Nick Creely AFL recruiters got their first glimpse at the Victorian talent available in the AFL 2018 draft with Ikon Park playing host to a Futures Squad match between Vic Country and Vic Metro last Saturday. With the TAC Cup having a scheduled development weekend, many kids went back to local level or had a well-deserved break. But for a select few under-age youngsters, they had the first chance to show AFL recruiters what they are made of. It was a fairly one-sided affair in tough conditions, with Country defeating Metro by 60-points, 4.3 (27) to 12.15 (87). Both sides had a red-hot crack early, with Country leading by four-points at quarter time, before kicking six goals in the second quarter to run away with contest. Metro scored just the single goal after half time as Country continued to carve them up on the outside and bully them at the stoppages. A total of seven under-agers from Mark Wheeler’s Dandenong Stingrays made up the squad, all making impressive contributions throughout the match in limited game time. Beaconsfield product and Dandenong Stingray forward Jamie Plumridge was outstanding, kicking a goal and finding some footy up the ground to finish with 16 disposals. Toby Bedford - another Dandenong Stingray who has played five matches of TAC Cup football this season - was incredible, finding 27 disposals and a goal in limited game time in an inside midfield role which also included a team high eight tackles. Campbell Hustwaite - who has shown immense promise in his first season at the ‘Rays, was another who looked comfortable on the big stage, playing a great link-up role around the ground. Other local TAC Cup players who played were Bailey Schmidt (Dandenong Stingrays), Jai Nanscawen (Dandenong Stingrays), Will Hamill (Dandenong Stingrays) and Riley Bowman (Dandenong Stingrays). The Stingrays returned to the field on Sunday in a match against the GWV Rebels in Ballarat.

cricket,” he said. “We haven’t got a guy like Spoljaric who swings it both ways anymore, so it’s just about being smart with the ball and batting out our overs.” While there are plenty of youngsters across the grades looking to make their mark, Ligt identified a few players he expects to step up to the top level this season after years of development in the lower levels. “Nivin Sathyajith is one who really excites us and we’re looking forward to seeing what he can do - he’ll be given a real shot this year and is aware of that and working really hard at training,” he said. “Jake Harrington had an awesome final game last year against Springy South, and that’s what we’ve seen he is capable of - he is also aware he has a real senior role this season and will need to bat more. “Tim Fathers is a really good bowler but was unlucky we had some big names, and the same with Paddy Boyle as well - they will be our main bowling attack.” And Ligt himself is ready to evolve into a leader he believes the club needs in its rebuild. “I’m going to be a lot more approachable and let them have a lot more of a say, but it just means I will be a lot harsher at the same time - if you want to make your own plans, you have to follow through with it.” Ligt also believes Spoljaric’s Springvale South and Chasemore’s Berwick are likely to be battling it out for this year’s Turf 1 premiership. “I think everyone knows Springy South and Berwick will be in the grand final, unless one of them knocks the other out earlier,” he said.

Texans gouge Rangers to win The Dandenong Rangers’ all conquering SEABL men’s team played host to the Texas Longhorns for an exhibition match last Tuesday at Dandenong Stadium. The Longhorns - a college team from the United States - was just a tad strong for the Rangers, winning 84-96 in front of a packed crowd. Both sides played high quality basketball in an electric atmosphere but the Longhorns got the jump early before the Rangers fought back to be within seven points at half time. The quality Texan side then flexed its muscles with a massive second half to hold the Rangers at bay, eventually outscoring the home side 40-35 in the second half. Despite not grabbing the win, the Rangers played brilliant basketball and matched it with a professional side as they eye off a SEABL championship in the coming weeks. In other news around Dandenong Basketball, the outstanding work by the Dandenong Rangers Victorian Youth Championship women’s side has been recognised with several nominations for the 2017 Big V Awards. The Rangers - who lost just two matches for the season in the championship - were the most outstanding team of the season, but surprisingly lost the preliminary final 42-48 against Ringwood three weeks ago. The most notable nominee is rising Rangers’ star Amy Baum who finished fifth in total assists in 2017 and shot at a brilliant 40.58 per cent from the three-point line. 2017 Big V Award Nominees: Defensive player: Amy Baum Rising Star Nominee: Amy Baum MVP/All Star Five Nominee: Amy Baum and Keeley Patterson Coach of the Year Nominee: Clare Papavs

Fanta Bale our state’s top dog Fanta Bale was awarded the Victorian Greyhound of the Year at Friday’s 2016/17 Victorian Greyhound Awards at Sandown Park following a sensational season of racing that included a phenomenal five Group 1 victories. Trained at Lara by Robert Britton. Fanta Bale is unrivalled in terms of success at the very top level when it comes to versatility. She is the only greyhound to win at Group 1 level as a sprinter, middle-distance and staying performer, having won the Hume Cup (600m), Rookie Rebel (600m), Australian Cup (525m), Sandown Cup (715m) and the Gold Cup (710m) during the 2016/17 racing year. “I don’t think she is the best sprinter in the land or the best stayer in the land, she is just a damn good dog with an enormous will to win,” Britton said. “Fanta Bale has a unique story. She is a daughter of a female greyhound I bought in America called UCME Typhoon, and I bought her in the auctions over there. UCME Typhoon’s other owners, Sandy Mathieson and John Hutchison weren’t interested in breeding with her and neither was I, but I was talking to Paul Wheeler about her, and he was interested in breeding with her and we went from there.” As well as the Victorian Greyhound of the Year, Fanta Bale was also announced the Victorian Stayer of the Year, while Striker Light was awarded the Victorian Sprinter of the Year. All three awards relate to racing between 1 July 2016 to 30 June 2017, and are voted on by the Victorian Greyhound of the Year Panel and revealed via a secret ballot. It was a huge night for Britton, who was also announced the Metropolitan Trainer of the Year and the Ned Bryant ‘Silver Fox’ recipient for showing outstanding achievements in the training of greyhounds and promotion of greyhound racing. There were three new inductees into GRV’s Hall of Fame - Jan Wilson (administration), Barry Smith (breeding) and El Grand Senor (racing

Motivation missing in the City By Nick Creely NPL - REVIEW - ROUND 27 Dandenong City’s promotion-ending loss to the Thunder three weeks ago seems to have zapped the energy out of the men at Frank Holohan Soccer Complex. Albeit with a severely undermanned side on Friday night, the City fell 1-2 at home to the seventh placed Eastern Lions, their fourth loss in the last five matches. With three new debutants and only four regular senior players, the Lions got on the board in the 12th minute via a goal to Shaun Kennedy and took a 1-0 lead into half time. City’s defence broke down once again in the 48th minute when Kennedy once again found the back of the net, essentially ending the match as a contest. But City refused to give in, as their debutants provided a spark, and in the 63rd minute Shaun Filipovic brought the home side back to 1-2 and with a fighting chance of equalising the game with under half an hour left to play. The inexperience on the park proved costly in the end, with City unable to find anymore attacking opportunities, with the Lions able to hold firm defensively and maintain possession in the last 20 minutes. The NPL2 East champions - Dandenong Thunder - drew 2-2 against Melbourne City FC on Saturday, as they continue to blood some players as they gear up for promotion in 2018. The Thunder rolled out debutants Nicholas Ally, Mohamad Feizi and Alil Jeka for the match at Latrobe University, Bundoora. Within the first 10 minutes, the Thunder flexed their promotional muscles to lead 2-0 via impressive goals to Brandon Barnes and Alon Blumgart, leaving City with plenty of work to do to avoid a massive defeat. City were able to contain the Thunder for the rest of the half as the momentum began to slightly shift.

Picture: ROB CAREW

Jordan Seeto’s Dandenong Thunder shared points with Melbourne City FC on Saturday. 170575 The home side then managed to kick two goals to equalize the game and share the points with the champs. Thunder finish their historic home-and-away season with a match against Richmond at home on Saturday afternoon. Admission to the match will be free, to celebrate the championship, with a family day and entertainment provided by the club to say thank

you to its loyal band of supporters. Springvale White Eagles, meanwhile, ended their home season with a disappointing 1-2 loss to Murray United on Saturday. It took just two minutes for United to hit the scoreboard, with Gonzalo Freddi scoring the opening goal. United then tightened its defences as the Eagles pressed in attack, and in the 30th minute the

home side managed to equalise the game with a classy strike to the back of the net. Freddi then struck only moments later to kick the match-winning goal, with no side able to find another point in the second half. The Eagles will finish the home-and-away season with a clash against Eastern Lions on Saturday afternoon.

Luck required for Noble in a late-season running of the Bulls By Nick Creely JOURNAL FOOTBALL REVIEW EASTERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE - ROUND 17 Everything must now go Noble Park’s way if they are to be playing finals in 2017. After another disappointing 24-point loss on Saturday to North Ringwood, 15.9(99) to 11.9(75), the Bulls now remain in sixth spot, one game behind with just a single round to go. It’s a difficult equation, but not an impossible one for Mick Fogarty’s men. The Saints led from start to finish at Quagmbee Reserve agains the Bulls, leading by five-points at quarter time, 12 at half time, 18 at three quarter time before running out strongly in the last. Skipper Sam Monaghan (two goals) did all he could to drag his side over the line but had few other teammates, with Kyle Martin and Brett Dore others to have their moments and James Gwilt was lively up forward with limited supply. SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE - DIV.2 - ROUND 19 Keysborough appear in the box seat for a top-two finish despite only playing one quarter of football on Saturday against Skye. The match at Keysborough Reserve was called off in the first quarter with the Burras four-goals ahead, with a Skye footballer

With one round left to play, the Burras just need to defeat East Brighton (seventh) to solidify their spot as they eye off a premiership.

Springvale Districts, meanwhile, lost narrowly to Hampton by nine-points, 8.8(56) to 9.11(65), as the Dees continue its season of agonizingly close losses. DIVISION 3 - ROUND 18 Endeavour Hills warmed up for finals with a top quality 16-point win away from home against second placed and qualifying final opponent Ashwood on Saturday afternoon, 8.9(57) to 11.7(73). The visitors had all the running in the first quarter with seven scoring shots to just one, opening up a 16-point quarter time lead. Ashwood then stormed back into the contest to take a 10-point lead into the wind at half time, with Frank Martinicchio (two goals) threatening to tear the game apart. But the Eagles gritted out a tough third quarter to regain the lead, before holding firm defensively in an intense final term to take the four points. Dandenong, meanwhile, ended their season with a tough rout from the minor premiers Hallam by 132-points. It was a similar result for the Doveton Eagles, who ended Sandown’s 2017 campaign with a 206-point win, 2.5(17) to 33.25(233). In other results over the weekend, South Yarra 17.12(114) defeated Lyndhurst 8.5(53), Black Rock 14.16(100) captured a finals spot with a win over Carrum Patterson Lakes 7.12(54) and Lyndale 12.20(92) finished the season with a win over Moorabbin 13.9(87).

Countryman is not mini By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring New Mini Countryman is no longer mini sized. At 4299mm long it’s 199mm longer than the Countryman it succeeds. Width has increased by 33mm to 1822mm; height is greater by 13mm, now 1557mm. The Countryman’s wheelbase is significantly greater, being 75mm up to an impressive 2670mm which makes for significantly more legroom inside. There's also 59mm more elbow room, 50mm added shoulder room, even another 9mm extra headroom. Our road test Countryman came in a deep chocolate brownish orange with ‘racing’ stripes and a black roof. Frontal styling follows that of the latest Mini hatch range, with different design for its grilles from model to model. The wagon’s rear has a wide D-pillar and wide tailgate shaped to give it a large style. The standard ‘Elegant’ Countryman exterior theme can be replaced with an optional ‘Offroad’ style. Or there’s the sporty look with the optional John Cooper Works (JCW) Chili Package. Inside it's the same. The large central dial is a carryover from 58 years ago, though these days the central speedo has been pushed aside to make way for the infotainment screen. While the circular central screen housing is huge the screen itself is tiny. It's clear enough, but using the satellite navigation (which impressively is installed in all models) at a quick glance isn't easy. There's DAB+ digital radio, Bluetooth phone and audio streaming and voice control. You can also use the BMW-style iDrive controller. There's

Customisation has always been the name of the game in the Mini. New Countryman is a class act in this area. an Aux jack, but surprisingly there’s just one USB port. Mini’s range features an interesting variety of drivetrain options: two- or all-wheel drive (AWD). Petrol and diesel engines, all turbocharged. The lowest cost model is the front-wheel-drive Mini Cooper powered by a 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine that produces 100kW of power and 220Nm of torque. Mini Cooper S Countryman comes with a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder petrol driving the front wheels. It produces 141kW and 280Nm. Automatic transmission is standard in all models, it has six forward ratios in the 1.5-litre petrol and eight in the others.

Model range Cooper: $39,900 Cooper D $43,900 Cooper S: $46,500 Cooper SD: $51,500 Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go function is fitted across the range as standard equipment. It works from zero to 140km/h in conjunction with the Mini Driver Assistant Package that includes Forward Collision Warning, City Collision Mitigation, High Beam Assistant and Speed Limit Info. Sheer fun in its styling inside and out almost contradicts the fact that this is a spacious family vehicle.
