SAMBA GRILL DINNER FOR TWO
A long dry winter, warm weather and hot winds have turned Noosa into a tinderbox waiting for a spark. It happened on the weekend, when flames engulfed three family homes in a matter of minutes. It was a terrible tragedy for the families, though luckily no-one was injured. The community again showed its strength and compassion by coming to the aid of the victims, providing assistance in every way possible. Fortunately all those who lost their homes were insured and have knocked back offers to fund-raise. Firefighters have been doing a fantastic job and have expressed their concerns about the high fire danger in the area. They are asking people to take care, and act appropriately. Most fires involve human intervention, they say. For months firefighters and National Parks officers have been trying to reduce the fire danger through controlled burns. Here’s hoping it rains soon. ● Margaret Maccoll
Samba Grill is a feast for the eyes, nose and belly. Meat-lovers will love the ‘Rodizio’ style whereby for all-you-can-eat price waiters bring food to their table several times throughout the evening. In the tradition of the South American, Guarani Indigenous people, and then later the Brazilian Gauchos (or cowboys), prime cuts of marinated beef, pork, lamb, chicken are skewered then grilled over organic charcoal before being carved at the table. For your chance to win a Taste of Samba lunch voucher for two (worth $57) at Samba Grill, simply ‘like’ their Facebook page and email us your name and phone number. The winner will be selected randomly and announced on Tuesday 29 August by phone. Samba Grill serves traditional Brazilian cuisine five nights a week. Samba Grill is fully licensed with BYO wine also permitted. Reserve your seat by calling 5449 957 or pop in to Samba Grill at 251 Gympie Terrace, Noosaville.

THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT…
A dog stares bewildered at his destroyed home.
Mike Hancock lost everything in the fire.
Firefighter Brendan Riches assists a home owner who lost his house in the blaze.
Firefighters dampened the smoldering shells for hours.
Smouldering piles of rubble was all that was left of three homes burnt to the ground.
HOMES REDUCED TO ASHES BY MARGARET MACCOLL Three piles of smouldering blackened rubble half buried under collapsed roofs were all that remained of a lifetime of memories for three Noosa North Shore families after fire tore through their houses about 1pm on Saturday. The flames that were highly visible from across the river at Tewantin were fanned by 30 knot winds, and leapt from house to house from a fire, residents believed, started from a power tool. Rural fire officers were first on the scene, describing it as “pandemonium”. Firefighter Brendan Riches said they were hampered by the remoteness of the location, high winds and a lack of water. It took them about 20 minutes to cross the North Shore ferry with three fire units, then travel the dirt road to find three houses totally engulfed. “We thought we were going to one structure, there were three,“ he said. Brendan said they immediately called for
back-up, and pumped water from the only available source, the river. “We made sure everyone was out of the houses and protected what was left,“ he said. Two adjacent houses were saved, sustaining some damage. Neighbours gathered to offer assistance and accommodation to those affected, and were only too aware the fire could very well have taken their homes. “The firemen told me to pack a bag in case the winds changed direction,” neighbour Judith Hayward said. “But what do you pack?” “I’m just thinking no one was hurt.” Judith came to help, but there was nothing anyone could do. “It’s such a frightening experience. You just feel helpless,” she said. Some homeowners were visibly shocked by the event. Mike and Lynne Hancock, who lived in the middle house, were celebrating their grandson’s fourth birthday at Australia Zoo
when they received a call from a neighbour telling them their house was on fire. “We came home and it was gone,” Lynne said. “The only thing that’s really upsetting is the original painting of our son. He was 22 when we lost him. We can’t get that back. “We can get most of our photos back. “At least no one died.” Lynne said they’d been offered numerous places to stay and clothing. Jason Styles of Makepeace Island phoned his boss Virgin Australia CEO Brett Godfrey who offered all affected a room at the resort while they sort things out. Mike is the local Rural Fire service first officer. He felt regret he wasn’t home. With a fire extinguisher on his back deck, he might have been able to put it out before it took hold, he said. Only last week the rural brigade burnt back bushland across the road to safeguard them from the high possibility of bushfire in such dry, warm conditions. ●
One of several cars lost in the fire.
The intense heat continued to cause flare ups after the initial blaze.
Little left to salvage from the fire.
DRY CONDITIONS CONDUCIVE TO MAJOR FIRE Firefighters are bracing for a major fire in the area if the dry conditions continue and are combined with high winds. “We’ve had a long dry winter. It’s just so dry, there’s no moisture content in the air. Until we get rain we have got a lot of concerns. We are in a high fire risk,” Noosa station officer Don Wilson said this week. Crews were run off their feet over the weekend fighting several fires in the area. In addition to the fire at Noosa North Shore on Saturday that claimed three houses and damaged two others firefighters were called to bushfires at Peregian Springs and one behind the Noosa Lions soccer ground. Don said the Peregian Springs fire reignited on Sunday despite officers successfully putting it out on Saturday. “Possibly there were some embers and it reignited,” he said. Minister for Fire and Emergency Services Mark Ryan urged residents to be vigilant under these conditions and warned unattended or mismanaged fires could create sparks and cause fires to spread quickly. “More often than not fires are started by some type of human intervention,” Don said. ● 201721004-LB21-17

DAWN: NO TIME
TO RETIRE BY MARGARET MACCOLL
S
he’s an extraordinary Olympian, a mother, grandmother, patron of many causes and just shy of her 80th birthday is about to embark on a new role - teaching Aboriginal children in outback Australia to swim. Her down-to-earth, humble nature belies the extraordinary person who is our own Noosa resident Dawn Fraser. In sporting terms Dawn is a phenomenon whose international accolades include World Athlete of the Century. Nationally in 1999 she was hailed Athlete of the Century by the Australian Sports Hall of Fame and National Living Treasure a year earlier. She won her first Olympic gold medal in 1956 in Melbourne, winning the100m freestyle in record time, gold in the 100m freestyle relay and silver 400m freestyle. In 1958 she won two gold medals at the Commonwealth Games in Cardiff, Wales and gold at the Rome Olympics in

the 100m freestyle in 1960. She picked up another four gold medals at the 1962 Commonwealth Games in Perth, becoming the first woman to swim 100m under one minute, and won her final gold medal in 1964 at the Tokyo Olympics in the 100m freestyle. She has given back to her sport and other sports by being a mentor for able and disable Australian Olympic Teams. She has maintained an active role in the sporting and wider community as Patron of the Cerebral Palsy Sports Association, the Wheelchair Sports Association of Victoria and of the Ladies Professional Golf Association. She is a Founding Member of the Laureus Sports Academy, a member of the Sport for Good Foundation and Vice President of the World Association of Olympic Winners. Among other roles she is patron of the Save the Bilby Fund, actively involved in the Noosa Heads Surf Lifesavers Seahorse Nippers for children with special needs and is on the board of directors for the Balmain Tigers Rugby League Football Club. The Australian Coaches and Teachers Federation have
recently enlisted Dawn to be ambassador for their learn to swim program. Dawn is drawn to help people in need, something she said stems from her own background. “I was told I’d never swim for Australia because I came from the wrong side of the tracks,” she said. “That was a big challenge for me and I’ve been proving people wrong all my life.” Born in Balmain, Sydney, in a working class and sporting family Dawn was the youngest of eight and with a string of brothers grew up a bit of a tomboy. Her first love was horse riding. She and her brothers used to look after the council horses taking them swimming in the ocean. It was one of three jobs Dawn had while she was swim training with Sydney coach Harry Gallagher who spotted her swimming at the local sea baths. Times have changed enormously for athletes today. When Dawn competed in the Olympics she was considered an amateur and needed to earn a living, something she doesn’t regret.

“I think you really appreciate your achievements more if you strive to get them and you learn a lot from it,” she said. Facilities at the time were limited. “We had one heated swimming pool, the City Baths in Melbourne until 1956 when they built pools for the Olympics,” she said. The Olympics changed Dawn’s life and opened doors for her. “I met some wonderful people and have seen most of my country. That’s fantastic,” she said. “I was meeting the likes of Johnny Weissmuller.” She now counts as her friends Morgan Freeman and Elton John, along with a list of athletes including Usain Bolt and Michael Jordan, some of whom meet annually at the annual Hall of Fame get together. After her swimming career, Dawn coached for many years and became publican of the Riverview Hotel, Balmain, a pub where her father used to drink. In 1988 she was elected an Independent MP for the seat of Balmain until the seat was abolished in 1991. Dawn moved to Noosa from Sydney almost nine years ago to be near her daughter Dawn-Lorraine and grandson Jackson, 14. “I don’t have any memory of my grandparents,” she said. “When I did (family history television program) ’Who do you think you are?’ I found out I had a grandmother I didn’t know. She passed away when I was two. My daughter had a baby and I wanted to spend the rest of my life with him so he knows he has a grandmother. He has a mother and grandmother who love him desperately.” Dawn knew the area well having holidayed at Noosa for 50 years and has been a long-term patron of the Noosa Triathlon. Growing up the daughter of a famous athlete was tough at times for Dawn-Lorraine. She felt she was often expected to perform at sport. When she lived in Sydney she used to take Jackson to the Dawn Fraser Baths but she didn’t want him to feel the pressure she had as a child. In Noosa, Jackson is involved in a variety of sports and his grandmother is ever by his side to support him. Last week Dawn travelled to Perth to speak at the funeral of Betty Cuthbert who passed away after a long battle with multiple sclerosis. Dawn said they met when they were 16. “I was going out with a guy who was training with her. I was training too. “We got on very well together.” She said Betty’s strong will persisted throughout her life and despite having spent 27 years in a wheelchair she still held hopes she would walk again. “I could see the illness was getting to her but she’d never give in. She was a great fighter,” she said. “I don’t think we have seen another athlete like Betty to have an injury and come back and win like she did. No one ever did what she did.” Dawn considers herself to be semi-retired but is always on the lookout for the next project. “I still want to work. I don’t want to retire. I couldn’t think of anything worse than sitting at home watching TV. I’m still thinking what can I do.” ●

FACELIFT MAKES SURF CLUB BY MARGARET MACCOLL Peregian Beach Surf Club director Brett Leckie knows better than anyone why the surf club needs to change to become a viable business to support a life-saving service at Peregian. Having been president of the club for six years before it closed and having had the unenviable task of shutting it down, he understands why it failed. Brett said a mixture of debts and an inability to compete against the restaurants and cafes in the village meant the surf club business became unsustainable. He said the lack of day trading was a major downfall for the club. “If people want to go to a surf club, they’ll go to Sunshine, Coolum or Noosa where they can see the ocean, he said. “The day trade at Peregian was nonexistent. Surf Life Saving came in and advised us to close down. On Tuesday, Wide Bay MP Llew O’Brien and Noosa Surf Club officials gathered to officially open the Peregian club’s upgraded premises. Mr O’Brien said the Sunshine Coast economy relied on beaches kept safe by the lifesavers to bring in tourism. Noosa Surf Club president Ross Fisher said with the help of a Federal Government grant the Peregian club had been able to renovate the kitchen and bathrooms and repair degraded areas to make it usable for lifesavers.
Labor candidate for Noosa Mark Denham.
LABOR'S MAN
Brett Leckie, director of Peregian Surf Club. “We’ve spent about $170,000 to get it up to scratch, he said. “It’s safe, clean and good for our members. “The future is up to the people of Peregian. We think it’s in the wrong place. It’s already failed once. People are wanting more than this building can provide for them. Ross said they’d been a couple of
community meetings, but they were trying to organise more public consultation. He said they wanted to get town planners to come up with computerised model of what club alternatives might look like so people could visualise it. “It’s nor for us to decide. We’re just looking to the future of what is best for Peregian, but the people have to decide, he said.
Mark Denham has been officially endorsed as the Labor candidate for the Noosa electorate to contest the next State Government Elections against sitting member Glen Elmes. Access to better local health care, improved roads, better public transport and the repurposing of Noosa TAFE are issues on his agenda for the election. Mr Denham contested the 2015 election, garnering 20.5 per cent of the first preference vote behind 48.6 per cent for Mr Elmes and 21.4 per cent for the Greens candidate Joe Shlegeris. A Noosa resident for the past 28 years, Mr Denham is a paramedic stationed at the Tewantin Ambulance Station and an SES volunteer. “I’ve lived in the Noosa community for almost three decades - raising my four children and nine grandchildren here, he said. “I understand the pressures on local families and want to make sure they have access to affordable, high quality health care, and the opportunity to find work here in the local area.

DIGITAL PROPERTY WEBSITE RE-BRANDS AND LINKS WITH PUBLISHERS One of Australia’s largest online property portals - view.com.au - has established a new marketing and sales partnership with a group of independent regional and community publishers across Queensland, Victoria and South Australia. The partnership with Independent Media Publishers (IMP) follows a decision by real estateview.com.au Pty Ltd to rebrand as view.com.au and launch its ’Property 360 - Every House in Australia’ search facility. The commercial cross-promotional arrangement with IMP will provide view.com.au with increased exposure across important regional community mastheads including Noosa Today. It will also give IMP a strengthened digital offering and platform to amplify and support digital advertising inventory to local real estate agents. Commencing last Monday 21 August, IMP’s readers will see digital and physical presentations from the relationship across all of the Group’s newspapers and other media assets. These include key publications in Star News Group such as Noosa Today. There will also be an editorial partnership that will allow view.com. au to provide up-to-date property insights and commentary that are
An 18-year-old male from Peregian Springs was arrested and charged this week with public nuisance offences after police located him naked in the streets of Tewantin. The male was under the influence of an unknown drug, became violent towards police and had to be restrained by several officers. He then proceeded to damage the interior of the police vehicle with a variety of bodily fluids and was subsequently lodged at the watch house for several hours. He will face court next month. ●
Noosa Today is excited to be part of a new partnership with view.com.au invaluable to regional living and property investors. Paul Thomas, Managing Director of Star News Group, said he was excited to launch the partnership. “Our extensive portfolio of over 30 weekly and monthly newspapers, and their respective high-performing websites are a vital part of the lives of consumers living in regional markets,” Mr Thomas said. This partnership with view.com.au allows us to innovate, adapt and stay more relevant to the community we’ve been serving for many years.” view.com.au CEO Enzo Raimondo agreed the partnership is exciting and will be very beneficial. “We have a very strong, loyal network of regional real estate agents, this partnership with the regional and community publishers allows us to strengthen our regional exposure even further, and drive more traffic to view.com.au,” he said. DRUG CHARGES A 55-year-old male from Brisbane was located at a children’s playground in Tewantin with a quantity of marijuana and a utensil to smoke the same in his possession. He was charged with two drug offences and consuming liquor in a public place. ●
DRINK DRIVING Another four drink-drivers were charged this week - with the highest reading being 0.135 per cent for a 35-yearold Noosa Heads man. Most people charged with drink-driving believe that the amount of alcohol consumed by them may not have put them over the legal limit. (0.05 per cent). As well as the strength and amount of the alcohol you drink, many things can affect your reaction to alcohol and your alcohol concentration. These include: · Your age, body size and level of
fitness. · Your general health (if you are suffering from a condition such as hepatitis this may determine how effectively your body can break down alcohol). · State of mind (excited, stressed, depressed, happy). · How tired you are. · Your metabolism (how quickly your body breaks down alcohol or food). · Whether you drink alcohol regularly. · Hormones. · Whether you have an empty or full stomach. · Any medication you might have taken. Police advice is that if you are planning on drinking alcohol - don’t drive. ●
BODY CAMERAS ARE AN IMPORTANT RESOURCE The use of body worn cameras (BWC) by police is becoming increasingly prevalent in policing both within Australia and internationally, providing law enforcement agencies with an independent and objective resource to capture incidents and interactions between police and members of the community. Queensland Police officers are authorised to use a BWC to record images or sounds while an officer is acting in the performance of the officer’s duties. Unless impractical, when an officer is carrying a BWC, the device is to be recording prior to and during an incident. ●

NOOSA TODAY 9
NEWS THE FINE ART OF STAGE WRITING By Margaret Maccoll Playwright David Williamson discovered drama in high school from the time his English teacher Alan McCloud acted it out in front of the class and introduced them to the power of language. But he was also good at maths, and after school followed an expected career path to university to study engineering. With no interest in the job, he swapped to psychology where he revelled in the study of people, their quest for love, desire, power, recognition and the use of language to persuade or deceive. His study of peoples’ behavior became what he “was obsessed with in early stage writing”. It was a full house at Noosa U3A on Friday where David Williamson was guest speaker to discuss his work of “putting words into people’s mouths”. David is about to release his 53rd play to a world stage but his first, The Coming of Stork, about a student share house, was written for a little theatre in Carlton where director Betty Burstall was “looking for new writing”. Not long after he wrote The Removalists, which has fond memories for David as it was where he met his wife Kristin. “I saw this vision of loveliness walking toward me,” he said. From then, writing plays became his lifelong career and one his parents were dubious about.
DAFFODIL DAY ON FRIDAY
David Williamson speaks to a packed crowd at Noosa U3A. He said his mother was always having to explain about the son who wrote plays with swear words, but he was encouraged by his father’s warning. “Don’t live the life I’ve had. I’ve worked for 40 years in a bank and hated every day, and I’ve done it for you kids.” David said he’d led a terrific life and while his plays had brought financial success he didn’t do it for the money. “It’s the first premier night when the
audience see it. It’s highly tense and highly exciting - you know what you’ve got. “If it holds their interest, if it relates to their lives, it’s the biggest kick,” he said. David’s play Sorting out Rachel will premiere in Sydney before coming to Noosa in March next year as a forerunner to the Noosa Alive (formerly Noosa Long Weekend) festival of which David is a co-founder.
This week a team of dedicated members from Cancer Council Queensland’s Noosa Branch will be out in force, turning the town yellow, as Daffodil Day blooms for its 31st year on Friday 25 August. The Noosa Branch will sell hundreds of fresh daffodils, pens, pins and Dougal Bears, to support the one in two Queenslanders who will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. Daffodil Day fund-raising stalls will be set up at Bendigo Bank Tewantin, Noosa Village Shopping Centre, Noosa Fair Shopping Centre, on Gympie Terrace (outside Saffron) and Bunnings Noosaville. Among those volunteering will be branch president Kathi Gow who survived two primary breast cancers and wants to contribute towards finding a way to stop the disease and give support to those in need. “I enjoy working with like-minded people, the laughs and friendships shared, as well as the support given when needed. “It’s also my way of saying thanks to all those who were there for me,” she said. To get involved you can buy a pin to show their support, donate online, volunteer on the day or buy merchandise at daffodilday.com.au

ELANDA POINT ECO BOOST
Majestic Elanda Point.
BY HOLLIE HARRIS Many people in our community have been waiting to hear what will become of The iconic Elanda Point campsite. September 1 will herald the end of an era for Brian Mays as he hands over the stewardship to new owner, Wade Batty, managing director of Discovery Group. Mr Batty acknowledged Mr Mays’ 38-year legacy and the responsibility that comes with safeguarding the 65-acre Education Centre and Adventure Park, located within Noosa’s UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, for future generations. "I am pleased to announce we will be progressively upgrading one of Noosa’s largest privately owned camp sites, into a world-renowned eco-tourism destination, befitting Noosa’s brand and community values," Mr Batty said. "We recognise what a privilege it is to live and work in such a unique and pristine environment. Our plans

tremendous interest already from schools. Our curriculum program encourages the next generation to experience this incomparable communion of everglades and forest. Education fosters respect and understanding - key to our sustainability. "Domestically and internationally, we’ll meet a crucial gap in the market. Consumers tell us they want to go exploring ‘off the grid’, but they want to do it with a little comfort and style. Our plan is to deliver an unsurpassed, exclusive, low-impact, luxe glamping experience. "The eco-camp site will complement our existing Everglades eco-tours. We’ve been cruising past Elanda Point for the past 10 years, proudly sharing this incredible wilderness adventure with locals and visitors from around the globe. “We can’t wait to welcome old friends and new. Watch this space," Mr Batty concluded. ●

In the coming months, our focus will be to regenerate native vegetation, swales for water drainage and remove fences that endanger native wildlife," he said. "For our existing community of campers and caravanners, many who have enjoyed the park for decades, there will be improved amenities - new toilets and showers, renovated kitchen facilities and onsite services. "We are open for business. Works will be staged to minimise disruption, and we will be consulting with our camping community along the way. There’s such a lot of history here, we want to make sure it continues to be part of our evolving story. IT’S NONE OF OUR BUSINESS BUT … SENSE OF THE STYLISH Who are Noosa’s best dressed? Five Noosa Shire fashionistas made the Top Ten list of best dressed people in this year’s 10th annual Sunshine Coast Style Awards. Founded and directed by Jacinta Richmond the Sunshine Coast Style Awards began in 2008, with local residents being nominated (or self-nominating) to be named the Most Stylish Person on the Coast. It was held for several years at Noosa Cinemas, attracting crowds of up to 300 people keen to see who the winner was and to watch a movie. In 2014 it was expanded to include The Best Dressed List and the winners' announcements were moved to the Sunshine Coast International Fashion Festival. Individuals make the list when they have shown a constant respect for being well-dressed and wellgroomed. “The Sunshine Coast Style Awards have become the arbiter of style for the region,” Jacinta said. “Good taste and style is in no way dependent upon money and it is far from purchasing fashion. You can be in fashion or you can have style. Everyone on the list has shown a love of fashion and excellent grooming but have they shown true style? The Style Stalkers have voted. To determine the best-dressed, five style stalkers are enlisted to spy on nominees over a couple of months, watching them in their everyday lives. Jacinta selects the style stalkers - they change every year and they never know who the others are. A couple on this year’s list may or may not have been stalkers in the past. “I can tell you that a national magazine fashion editor and national magazine beauty editor, both on holidays on the Coast, were stalkers this year,” she said. Noosa’s best-dressed include Lucia Cumino, Sonja

NEWS DOGS HELP LICK READING DIFFICULTIES The calming presence of dogs is helping students at Sunshine Beach State School to read - and has highlighted the program during Book Week being held from 19-25 August. Teacher Jo Kearney said the Story Dog program was primarily designed for students who have reading challenges with the goal being to make reading fun for children so that they become confident, lifelong readers. “There is much research indicating that children who read extensively have greater academic success,” Jo said. “Many children enjoy reading but need some encouragement and someone or in this case something to listen to them, a
captive audience who will not mind if an error or hesitations are made. Reading to dogs is exactly that. “A dog creates an environment, which feels more relaxing, and welcoming so reluctant readers are more confident and comfortable to give it a go and read.” The practice originated in the US in 1999 with the Reading Education Assistance Scheme and this initiative now extends to a number of other countries. The program is organised at the school in connection with Smart Pups, a program which trains pups to become assistance dogs for children with special needs and which is supported by the school. “Story Dogs is an extraordinary program introduced to Sunshine Beach

DANCE SCHOOL'S BIG DAYS OUT The Dance Centre Peregian Springs was a force to be reckoned with at this year’s Brisbane, Kingaroy, Gympie and Toowoomba dance eisteddfods. Dance Centre director Deborah Preece Brocksom said while they were not “a competition-focussed dance school”, they had “a very strong group of students at the moment who love competing”. More than 45 students from the centre competed during the eisteddfod season and came home with a swag of wins. At the Brisbane Eisteddfod they brought home first in Lyrical and second, third and fourth in Ballet sections against some of the state’s biggest dance schools. At the Kingaroy Eisteddfod the centre won every Ballet section, first and second where two dances competed and won nine of the 10 dance sections entered. At Gympie dancer Talena Cleyn won the Ballet and Contemporary sections and Senior Most Promising Classical Ballet Dancer award while solos, duos and trios won a host of first, second and third placings. At Toowoomba dancer Scarlett O’Rielley won all sections she entered, the juniors claimed first and second in Ballet and the intermediates and
STORIES STRAIGHT FROM THE SOURCE
The Dance Centre Peregian Springs dancers at Toowoomba Eisteddfod. seniors won first and second in Ballet and firsts in Lyrical and Contemporary. “The eisteddfods were masses of fun, the results were wonderful but there were unforeseen challenges that kept us on our toes ... literally,” Deborah said. “At the Toowoomba Eisteddfod, we nearly cancelled the night before. We were down five dancers (flu). Some dances went from a cast of eight dancers down to four (the minimum allowed) and there was simply no time to rehearse the 10 numbers, all of which had to be drastically changed.
CALL FOR FLOATING ISLAND SUBMISSIONS Abstracts are called for submissions to Noosa’s Floating Land, one of Australia’s leading art and environment events, by Monday 4 September. This year’s symposium will provide a forum for artists, writers, academics and researchers to share ideas, engage in practice, provoke discussion and prompt further action. Research papers, creative works, case studies, discussions and workshops will focus on exploring ways to raise awareness about environmental and sustainability issues through arts practice. The symposium will feature a number of artists, but proposals are sought for short papers and creative presentations of up to 30 minutes duration. Other proposals such as panels or workshops will also be considered. Email submissions to Susan Davis of CQU at s.davis@cqu.edu.au ●

The free event is being presented by Noosa-based RIPE Dance. The Sunshine Beach State School Prep Transition program recently welcomed Queensland author and illustrator Shannon Horsfall to one of its free author events. Shannon read Prep and pre-Prep students her books ‘Was Not Me!’ and ‘Nomax’, published by Harper Collins Australia. Shannon drew on her background in graphic design and children’s fashion for her illustrations and demonstrated the skills of drawing people and animals with emotions to the children. The children called out the emotions that they wanted to see drawn, such as happy, sad, grumpy, angry and tired. Shannon shared her secret on how to become good writers and readers - the message was simple - read books every day. The Prep Transition program plans to run an author event each term with the next event scheduled for October. ●
SURF FILM FESTIVAL SUBMISSION ACCEPTED The third annual Noosa Surf Film Festival will accept submissions of films of short to feature length until Friday 25 August. In addition to the film screenings, this year’s event program has expanded to include an art show and photography challenge, and will have a large focus on sustainability and protecting our oceans with an eco-surf panel discussion. The full festival schedule will be announced early September for the festival to take place from 6-8 October. Films can be submitted through the event website. LONG TAN ANNIVERSARY
PARADE BY MARGARET MACCOLL About 40 veterans marched in the parade in Tewantin on Friday 18 August to mark the anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan and pay respects to 521 Australians killed in the Vietnam War. Many dignitaries, friends and relatives watched on. Tewantin-Noosa RSL president Mick Reid told the Vietnam Veterans Day ceremony how Vietnam was a
mostly green palette of paddy field, jungles and army personnel with a splash of navy blue. “The navy was there from day one,” he said. Mick spoke about the HMAS Sydney which ferried troops to and from Australia to Vietnam and the constant threats it faced from the enemy. He also spoke of the HMAS Hobart which was mistakenly targeted by US fighters, killing two and injuring many others. Wreaths were laid and the band played both the Australian and New Zealand national anthems. ●

NEXT OPEN DAY 6TH SEPTEMBER 2017 Situated in a bushland setting in Doonan, we offer a beautiful learning environment that is in harmony with our natural surroundings. The academic education of our students is enhanced by developing strong relationships with peers and teachers in an atmosphere of support, co-operation and commitment. The uniqueness of our curriculum lies in its holistic approach, which recognises the importance of engaging all aspects of the human being in a broad and multi-disciplinary programme. Our teachers are inspired by the work of Rudolf Steiner, which encourages them to guide their students in cultivating a love of learning and a reverence for all life. Steiner education makes extensive use of cross curricular integration, enriching learning experiences by integrating drawing, painting, modelling, drama, movement or music with language work, mathematics, history, geography or the sciences.

FOCUS ON … Noosa Pengari Steiner Festival
SUSTAINABILITY IN ACTION IS A BEAUTY Sustainability comes full circle this year at the Pengari Children’s Festival in a truly remarkable way. Humble chia seeds, harvested from plants that grew in the school garden, will be for sale this year. They were originally planted and cared for by students and nourished with the help of compost that was created from the waste from last year’s festival. So the waste of last year’s festival has now evolved into new life for this year’s festival - this is sustainability in action. The environment is given absolute priority by the organisers, and is evident everywhere you look. Firstly, waste and packaging is reduced greatly by the use of both washable and compostable sugar cane pulp plates, wooden cutlery, coffee cups, drinking straws and even the icy pole wrappers and sticks. All of these are compostable and will be directed to the specially created compost heap in the school garden. No stone will be left unturned to ensure that Pengari Festival will be the most sustainable festival. Children are so at ease with the focus on nature and sustainability and are encouraged by a special free raffle for children who are seen putting their waste in the correct bins; compost or chook food bins, recycling or landfill. Local produce and services are sourced wherever possible including tie-dye kits produced from Gold Coast made non-toxic paints. Other craft stalls will offer a variety of creations and creative activities utilising totally natural products including making juggling balls and poi, swords and a special weaving stall. Cakes, pizzas, burgers and curries will, as always, be lovingly made by volunteers and parents. By creating a truly sustainable event, the Pengari Children’s Festival committee is hoping to make this an example of how mindfulness can truly and easily make a difference in our daily lives. ●

FOCUS ON … Noosa Pengari Steiner Festival
INTEGRAL EDUCATION AT STEINER BY HOLLIE HARRIS Noosa Pengari Steiner School is situated on 25 acres in Doonan, and has been in operation since 1996. As with all Steiner schools, staff endeavour to educate equally the areas of academia, artistic expression and practical skill, (the head, heart and hands) in an integrated way. The teachers are inspired by the work of Rudolf Steiner, encouraging them to assist the children to develop a lifelong love of learning, a reverence for life and the courage to live fully. The social education of children is enhanced through deepening their relationships with peers and teachers with whom they work and grow developing an atmosphere of support, co-operation and commitment. Steiner was a pioneer in the area of developmentally based age- appropriate learning - children of different ages learn in different ways. Thus in Steiner schools not only the curriculum but also the way that information is brought to the child, needs to change to suit their age-related needs. The preschool child learns by doing and by imitating the deeds of those around them. They need rhythm, purpose and time for creative play. Children of this age are not too quickly dragged out of the dreamy world of childhood. They are allowed to be children.
From age seven to 14, the focus changes to the rich life of the imagination and heartfelt feeling. Children study each area in Main Lesson blocks for a solid two hours every morning, enabling them to totally absorb themselves in the excitement and wonder of a topic. Artistic expression of the students is nurtured as an integral part of their
academic learning. The high school curriculum is designed to challenge students, to build skills and knowledge, to encourage a continual love of learning in the young adult. At this age, students deepen their understanding of the world and of themselves. Noosa Pengari’s aim is to guide into the world students- on the brink of
adulthood- confident in their ability to learn in whatever direction they take; flexible and resilient when life takes its unexpected turns and loving and compassionate to those who they interact with in life. “Waldorf education is not a pedagogical system, but an art- the art of awakening what is actually there within the human being.” Rudolf Steiner ●

NOOSA TODAY 21
LETTERS DESTINATION FASCINATION Relax, you’re in Noosa! Tourism Noosa recently launched a new marketing campaign - Noosa, The Relaxation Capital of Australia - targeting the key interstate visitor markets of Sydney and Melbourne during the chill of the southern winter. The campaign positions Noosa as ‘the capital of whatever you need to relax’ while on holiday, whether that’s mountain biking and hiking or sipping cocktails and taking it easy by the beach. The campaign has reached audiences across cinema, TV, YouTube and social media as well as making an impact on Sydney buses, city billboards and wrapped around our iconic Melbourne tram. With the warm winter season we’ve enjoyed in Noosa, the timing of the relaxation message has resonated strongly and our interstate visitor numbers and spend have never been stronger. In tandem with the new campaign, our events calendar also continues to draw visitors to our region to enjoy the best of Noosa, from cycling and sports to performance and art. Tourism Noosa sponsors a range of events throughout the year that are timed to bring visitors to the region outside of peak periods, and to disperse visitors throughout Noosa. Recently, we’ve recognised outstanding young hospitality talent at the national Appetite for Excellence awards, welcomed vintage cycle enthusiasts for Noosa Strade Bianche, followed the art trail with Noosa Open Studios, cheered participants at the Pomona King of the Mountain and witnessed world class performances during Noosa Alive! Right now, the Noosa Jazz Party is in full swing until 3 September and over the coming months we’ll welcome participants for the Noosa International Rugby 7s Festival (13-15 October) and Wild Women Adventure Race (15 October) then take in creative talent during the Noosa Surf Film Festival (6-7 October) and the Noosa International Film Festival (26-29 October). And of course, the Noosa Triathlon Multisport Festival (1-5 November), the world’s largest standard distance triathlon, is back, this year celebrating its 35th year and honouring the incredible contribution of the event’s founder, Garth Prowd OAM. ● - Damien Massingham, Tourism Noosa CEO

VERY IMPRESSED PERSON
SHOT IN THE FOOT
We had a VIP visitor from Sydney here recently and showed him around some of Noosa. His strong impression of the shire was that it is clean and well-maintained; the roads were good, the parks and roadsides were green and trimmed, he saw no graffiti and his comment to us was that he was hugely impressed with the quality of council’s care of the place. We thought we should let you know. Corrie and Case Smit, Noosaville.
Whether or not you believe the hypothesis that carbon dioxide is a major influence on the global climate, surely the utter futility of harming our economy and our lifestyle is obvious to anybody when you realise what is being emitted elsewhere, to the same atmosphere that we are going to such lengths to protect. We are shutting down coal-fired power stations and unsuccessfully attempting to replace their reliability and low cost with wind and solar power. As a direct result low-income families are being disconnected from the grid, small businesses are closing and whole industries are leaving Australia. At the same time there are almost 2000 coal-fired power stations in the process of being built elsewhere in the world. They emit carbon dioxide into the global atmosphere. Is it not totally ridiculous for Australia to commit economic suicide on the basis of an unproven hypothesis, when other countries are building their economies and stealing our jobs, with cheap electricity? Case Smit, Noosaville.
LENSCAPE
WHAT A WASTE I am disappointed with the Noosa Council’s approach with respect to the new green waste bin. I am over 90, with no garden waste, and no need of a green waste bin, and yet I am being forced to pay for one. I do not wish to have this bin on my property, but have been advised that I will be charged $45 to replace the bin if it is removed. I have been advised the only exemption I would be granted is if I employed a commercial gardener - for the garden I don’t have. I feel that I am being bullied by the council with their approach to this, and it is sad to see the council treating the elderly this way. Gloria Balcombe OAM, Noosa.
ON THE MARCH The red-headed pollie and former shop owner is rallying troops for her campaign to win the Kingdom of Ninderry. Overlooked is the one notion plan that civilians “need to be sorted into nationalities” otherwise “you’re going to have civil wars”.
Debbie Fernandez snapped this heron at Lake Weyba recently. “This spot has been the physio healing centre for my dog Sol, who is recovering from cruciate ligament surgery for the past couple months, magic spot," Debbie said. Send your photo in to Lenscape at newsdesk@ noosatoday.com.au
Before the campaign can begin, the recruitment drive requires official proof of ancestry and a supply of regimental colours of white, black, brown, yellow, red, tan, and grey for troop formations. At-ten-shun! Margaret Wilkie, Peregian Beach.
Steven Ledger with his dairy cow Riverwood Coral 3 which produced a record 48.94km milk in 24 hours.
FI-FO GOVERNMENT With all this doubt going on in parliament on citizenship and if they are who they say they are, I am totally confused. In fact when next asked “Is the Pope a Catholic?" I will have to answer “Sorry, I just don’t know." To be sure of a totally controlled “Australian Parliament" the simple solution is to hand it over to the Indigenous Australians, not the FI-FOs we have at the moment. E. Wright, Sunrise Beach.
Eye on the prize - David Morley's winning Ancona Red Cockerel.
PRIZED BIRD AND CASH COW BY MARGARET MACCOLL The Ekka is the final major show of the year for many serious exhibitors including local farmer Steven Ledger of Carters Ridge and hobbyist David Morley who brought home prizes with their animals. Steven claimed first, second and third prizes for his Illawarra dairy cows, and will now take them home to their Riverwood property where the cows are milked to supply Paul’s Milk. David Morley of Pomona took home a swag of awards for his Australorp AOC and Ancona Red poultry including first prize for

his Ancona Red Cockerel. Originally, from the UK where he grew up on a family farm, David has for the past 10 years bred poultry for show from his Noosa Shire acreage. Dedication to the breed and a lot of hard work is what it takes to get a prized bird, according to David. “It doesn’t happen by magic,” he said. Breeding with high quality birds and trying to improve every year is the key. “We all aim to achieve the exceptional,” he said. Both his bird breeds, the Ancona Red, which originated in Italy, and the Australian
breed, Australorp, were designed for the table and egg laying. His poultry live a spoilt live. “They’re free to roam in a natural environment. They have the sun on their backs and the rain or shelter when they need it. We give the best we can afford,” he said. But they’re never pets. “They’re something I enjoy working with. When they become pets it’s a different game.” David said his hobby cost him a lot of time and money. It’s a very scientific process of selective breeding to gain a good bird, he said. When it’s a winning bird you want, every egg is gold. ● noosatoday.com.au

ON THE COVER
ENTER INTO AN OASIS OF PEACE JUST ten years ago Amanpuri Estate was a blank canvas. With a dream to create an Asian-inspired garden, the estate’s owner set out to create a retreat-style oasis where one could escape the city humdrum; a place where they could bring to life the meaning of the Sanskrit word ‘Amanpuri’; place of peace. But with the owner’s frequent commute back and forth from Sydney, the estate had to also be one of low maintenance; a point on which garden designer Phillip O’ Malley successfully delivered. And now that the hard work has been done, it takes very little care to keep the property looking beautifully manicured. Having evolved into one of the most recognizable Noosa hinterland gardens, Amanpuri is 20 acres of level grounds, where one can absorb the scenic two-acre landscaped lake, or walk peacefully without disturbing the numerous kangaroos, wallabies or deer who frequently visit the property. The garden is a combination of tropical, exotic and natives trees, which invite regular bird life such as rainbow lorikeets, rosellas and honeyeaters, just to name a few. In 2016 the rebuild of Amanpuri’s original cottage was completed; a modern, no-expense-spared villa appearing in its place. Making living on the property so easy, the villa is a blend of Queensland and Asian-inspired living where one cannot help but relax immediately upon arrival. Containing one large bedroom with an ensuite finished in bespoke fixtures, occupants are invited to enjoy the private deck complete with outdoor bath and shower. The spacious dwelling is also comprised of large modern kitchen, lounge area overlooking the pool, a relaxing outdoor room with barbecue area as well as dining and lounge areas which all overlook the majestic grounds. Only 15 minutes to Noosa, this private and exclusive property is surrounded by some of the nation’s most beautiful beaches and spectacular state parks and goes under the hammer on Saturday 2 September 2017 if not sold prior to auction. ●

RENTING CAN HELP WITH ‘HOME’ DECISION MOST young Australians would love to own their own home and detest the years spent renting while saving for a deposit. While it may be frustrating to “pay someone else’s mortgage”, there are many advantages to renting while you look for your dream home. No rates Rates can be a nasty bill each year, but when you’re renting there’s no need to worry about having to pay. A renter is also free from worrying about rate rises, too. Save on water costs Not every landlord charges the renter for water consumption unless it exceeds a certain limit or is in their initial rental agreement. So, if you keep your water use within the specified limits, you don’t have to pay - more money to put towards your deposit.
Maintenance free While there are some difficult landlords who may refuse to maintain their rental property, many will be glad to keep their investment in tip-top shape at no cost to the tenant. If the hot water system breaks, no need to worry about the cost as the landlord will take care of the repair bill. But, keep in mind, if the tenant causes the damage they will be required to pay. Find what you like Renting is a great way to learn what features of a property you will want in your forever home. You might think you'd like a large garden, but find spending the weekend mowing is not fun. Renting is a great way to work out what will suit you and your family. ●
Renting on the road to home ownership can have lots of benefits.

MUSIC OF
MAORIS BY HOLLIE HARRIS As part of The Horizon Festival, the award-winning Modern Maori Quartet invites you to enjoy a fresh take on the classic Maori show band. Their signature cabaret-style show ’An Evening with the Modern Maori Quartet’ is a celebration of humour and heavenly harmonies putting their stamp on Kiwi classics and some of today’s biggest hits right here in Eumundi. Maaka Pohatu, Francis Kora, Matu Ngaropo and Jamie McCaskill mix old-
school charm with modern quirk, spiced with Maori culture for an unforgettable evening of waiata (song), stories and fun. A fresh take on classic Maori showbands, the Modern Maori Quartet (MMQ) are a good-looking, suave and multi-talented Maori foursome who love crooning their spin on modern and classic numbers. Suit ’em up in their number ones, comb their hair, shine their shoes, hand them a guitar or two and they’ll have you
melting like golden syrup on a piece of fresh hot fried bread! Horizon Festival connects, disrupts and delights through arts, culture and creativity. Over 10 arts-fuelled days across the Sunshine Coast, Horizon collaborates to deliver more than 200 events in visual art, film, literature, performance, street art, comedy, music, theatre and new media. As the signature multi-arts festival for the region, Horizon’s curated program of
events celebrates local artists alongside Australian and international guests, building the capacity of local creative talent and exposing the audience to unique arts experiences. Join in the fun at the Kira Ora Club - at The Imperial Hotel in Eumundi this Sunday 27 August 7pm-9pm. TICKETS: Pre-sale $25 via Eventbrite, or pay $30 at the door. There will also be a lucky door prize of two complimentary Maleny Music Festival tickets drawn on the evening. ●

Life is Fine, by Paul Kelly
Force of Nature, by Jane Harper
Guitars, organ and backing vocals all mesh together in a huge sound and the album goes tearing out the gates. Paul Kelly’s latest release is eclectic, as is evident even in the first two tracks. Finally Something Good lends itself to Kelly’s songwriting - specifically to his lyricism - as do Firewood And Candles, Leah: The Sequel and Letter In The Rain. In counterpoint, Rising Moon, Rock Out On The Sea and My Man’s Got A Cold highlight a rock-solid band. My Man’s Got A Cold throws something new entirely into the mix with the guest vocals of Vika Bull, as well as a gritty, Tom Waits-esque instrumentation behind her. Don’t Explain sees Kelly once again deferring vocal duties. ●
Lost, cold, desperate ... danger runs deep. What has happened to Alice Russell? Five women reluctantly pick up their backpacks and start walking along the muddy track. Only four come out the other side. The hike through the rugged Giralang Ranges is meant to take the office colleagues out of their air-conditioned comfort zone and teach resilience and team building. At least that is what the corporate retreat website advertises. Federal Police Agent Aaron Falk has a particularly keen interest in the whereabouts of the missing bushwalker. Alice Russell is the whistleblower in his latest case... ●
Doctor Doctor, Channel Nine, Wednesday, 8.30pm
One of the few shows that lived up to its hype is back - and some of us have actually been counting down the days. With a cast led by Mr Everywhere Rodger Corser, Doctor Doctor, filmed predominantly in Mudgee, is a nice return to those very quirky, very Australian shows of the ’90s and noughties - Sea Change, A Country Practice and East of Everything. After a spectacular fall from grace, high-flying heart surgeon Dr Hugh Knight (Rodger Corser) receives a life-changing punishment from the medical tribunal - he is forced to work for a year as a country GP in his former home town of Whyhope. ●

FOCUS ON … Craft Beer
SPOILT FOR BREWERS’ CHOICE BY HOLLIE HARRIS
BY HOLLIE HARRIS Noosa Craft Beer Festival 2017 is set to be massive with 20 breweries and over 80 beers and ciders from a range of local, international and traditional brews. International food stalls are available and live local entertainment is provided to enhance the festive spirit. Beer enthusiasts will have a craft beer event to experience a delightful journey of sipping, sampling and tasting some of the many offerings. Breweries small and large from all over Australia will descend on Noosa ready to put their best brews on show. This event is an interactive event with food and craft beer matching discussions and tastings. Entry to the Noosa Craft Beer Festival is a gold coin donation, and proceeds from entry will go to Breast Cancer and Sunshine Butterflies. The event will run from noon6pm, this Saturday 26 August 2017. ● Which one works for you? being made by the venues. The problem then seems to be the market drivers- the customers. “More than half the venues we spoke to said that it was the lack of consumer demand was the major determinant as to whether or not they put a craft brewer on," Mr Schaper said. So, while beer swillers are drinking
more craft brews, that still isn’t necessarily matching the customer’s attraction to well known, or you could say more traditional brands. Explore the world of craft beers this Saturday and experience this growing trend for yourself - you might just find a new favourite brew! ●
Fun events aplenty at Noosa Craft Beer Festival 2017.

Ever wondered why one pub seems to be all about VB and Carlton Draught and another serves Tooheys New alongside James Boags? For beer or cider brands, the tap at a pub is as highly sought after as the eye-level shelf in a supermarket. The big distribution and brewing companies often compete to get their slice of the action, with companies like Lion and Carlton United getting venues to sign contracts to make sure they take up as much real estate on the icy tap row as possible. But some craft brewers believed they were getting a raw deal by being locked out of the taps. “We’ve approached venues and been told that they’ve been fully contracted," brewer and chair of the Independent Brewers Association, Ben Kooyman, said. “One supplier has effectively locked out another supplier in, perhaps, pale ale ... we assume there is exclusivity on the taps." While craft brewers are gaining market ground, that level of interest isn’t necessarily reflected in what will turn a profit on tap. The ACCC spoke to staff and owners, on and off the record, at 36 licensed venues across New South Wales and Victoria. DINE IN WHITE TO HELP KIDS
the KIDS Foundation, I have seen firsthand the work they do with children impacted by life- changing injuries and burns. “We’ve sold most of the tables of 10 dining experiences, and have one table remaining. The money raised from selling tables goes directly to helping the KIDS Foundation deliver its safety education programs and Burn Survivors’ Camp here on the Sunshine Coast,” Mr McKill said. The 11 restaurants include Wasabi, Aroma’s, Italian Marina, Rock Salt Noosa, Locale, Embassy XO Restaurant and Bar, ARCURI at RACV’S Noosa Club, No. 10 Hastings Boutique Cafe, Noosa Boathouse, View Restaurant on Little Hastings and Maki Moto. Danielle from Wasabi Group is one of the restaurateurs donating a dinner for 10 and is excited by the opportunity to highlight Wasabi Restaurant and Bar, a multi-award winning Japanese fine dining restaurant located on the Noosa River. “This looks to be a really great event and we’re pleased to be part of Dine in White. It would be great if it became a regular feature

Local restaurant owners and enthusiastic bike riders may seem an odd combination of people to support a unique community event, but that is exactly what has happened in Noosa for Dine in White. Eleven local restaurant owners have donated a dining experience for 10 guests as part of the KIDS Foundation inaugural Dine in White event coming up on Friday 1 September, and all but one table of the 11 have been sold. Dine in White marks the conclusion of a six-day, 700km charity bike ride where 20 riders and support crew travel from Coffs Harbour to Noosa. Dine in White highlights the region’s finest restaurants, and raise funds for local preschool safety programs and KIDS Foundation’s Burn Survivors’ Camp, held each year in Noosa. Noosa local Donald McKill, one of the bike riders taking on the 70km cycling challenge, is part of the local organising committee for Dine in White, and is thrilled by the community support. “I’ve taken part in Ride 4 KIDS a number of times now, and am delighted this year to be part of the local group organising Dine in White. A unique fund-raising event that will be lots of fun is also a chance to show off the best restaurants our region has to offer and raise funds to support the KIDS Foundation. “As a local, I know how good our restaurant scene is, and as a supporter of
on the Noosa calendar. KIDS Foundation is a national charity, but I know they do a lot locally, so for us here at Wasabi, it’s not only a chance for people from out of town, some coming from as far as Victoria, to enjoy what we do, but also a great opportunity for us to support some local programs,” Danielle said. ABOUT Dine in White Selected restaurants, located in Hasting Street and along the river, have donated a dining experience for 10 people on Friday 1 September. Guests, dressed in white, will have a wonderful night with their friends at the finest restaurants Noosa has to offer. After dinner, they will be collected from their restaurant and taken to a secret after-party location where they will enjoy an evening of fun entertainment and an auction, featuring exclusive and unique items donated by our sponsors and local businesses. When: Friday 1 September 2017 6pm - 11pm Cost: $100 donation per person Covers food, transport and after party. Drinks will be available for purchase at bar prices. After Party Surprise location Dress White attire Tickets To purchase your table, email events@ kidsfoundation.org.au or call 1300 734 733 ●
INGREDIENTS 500g sweet potato, peeled, coarsely grated. 90g (1/2 cup) rice flour. 50g (1/3 cup) plain flour. 1/2 teaspoon baking powder. 60ml (1/4 cup) chilled water. 2 teaspoons soy sauce, plus extra, to serve. 6 eggs. 120g (1/2 cup) kimchi, chopped, plus extra, to serve. 2 green shallots, thinly sliced, plus extra, to serve. 60ml (1/4 cup) coconut oil. Baby spinach leaves, to serve. Sesame seeds, toasted, to serve. METHOD 1. Combine the sweet potato, rice flour, plain flour and baking powder in a large bowl. Season. Make a well in the centre. Whisk together the water, soy sauce and two eggs in a jug. Add the egg mixture, kimchi and shallot to the well and stir to combine. 2. Heat one tablespoon oil in a large non-stick frying pan over medium heat. Spoon four quarter-cupfuls batter into pan, flattening with a palette knife. Cook the fritters, turning, for five minutes or until golden. Transfer to a plate lined with paper towel to drain. Repeat in two batches with the remaining oil and batter to make 12 fritters in total. 3. Spray the pan with oil. Crack the remaining eggs into the pan and cook for 3-4 minutes for soft yolks or until cooked to your liking. 4. Divide the fritters and spinach leaves among plates. Top each with an egg. Serve with the extra kimchi, soy sauce and shallot. Sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds.

BY HOLLIE HARRIS Juliarna is a jazz singer of great talent and artistry who brings warmth, elegance and humour to all her performances. A night out in a club with her band guarantees punters toe-tapping, marvelling, a few laughs and great memories of a fabulous night of music. The technical command she has over her instrument comes from years of singing many different genres (classical, sacred, Irish, Brazilian and pop), with jazz being her main love for the last decade. Juliarna’s broad jazz repertoire extends from Chick Corea and Jobim, to standards, to French jazz, to jazz of the ‘20s and ‘30s. TRY THIS … boost immunity with yoga THREE … ways to boost your immunity Garlic helps boost your immunity.
1
Best immunity boosting foods are: Citrus, bell peppers, broccoli, garlic, ginger, spinach, yogurt, almonds, turmeric, green tea, papaya, kiwi, poultry, sunflower seeds and shellfish. Load up on these goodies to help ward off the nasties.
2
Probiotics can help. Yogurt, with its 'friendly' bacteria, has a centuries-old reputation as a health food. Now, more research than ever substantiates the claim that the bacteria found in yogurt and other naturally fermented foods can strengthen the body’s immune system and ward off infection, not just in the intestines but body-wide. The latest research published in the Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport found that New Zealand athletes had about 40 per cent fewer colds and gastrointestinal infections when they took a probiotic compared to when they took a placebo. You probably need a minimum of 2 billion CFU to be effective and to consume them for at least two weeks before they kick in.
3
Avoid stress. Studies have shown that chronic stress can affect the immune system and increase the chance of some diseases; so it is important to do what you can to manage stress. The way stress affects the immune system is complicated but explained well by Harrison Wein, Ph.D, in the National Institutes of Health newsletter, “Word on Health.“ In the article, “Stress and Disease: New Perspectives,“ Dr. Wein states that stress produces a hormone in the body called cortisol. The brain recognises cortisol as the “fight or flight“ hormone, and when it is produced, other body functions are halted until the stressful situation has passed. This is the body’s way of taking care of an immediate emergency. The immune system also receives signals to slow down while cortisol does its job. But with chronic stress, however, the immune system stays in low gear, leaving the body vulnerable to infection and disease. Common illnesses brought on or worsened by stress are cardiovascular disease, digestive problems, skin conditions and poor memory function.

In just a couple of minutes a day, you can boost your immune system to avoid or heal sickness with yoga.
YOGA TO BEAT THE FLU BLUES BY HOLLIE HARRIS It’s cold and flu season. We all know it. We’re all a little extra sensitive when someone sneezes near (or on) us in line at the grocery store. But what’s a girl to do to prevent it? I am a firm believer in stacking the odds in your favor in every way possible: get your flu shot, take extra zinc, eat nutritious foods, wash your hands, get lots of sleep - and do yoga. Yes, yoga. Each of the following poses are helpful in warding off the flu and colds, as well as managing the symptoms should you fall prey. They only take a few minutes, so try to do them right before bed three times a week, or every day should you feel something coming on. You’ll not only reap the protective benefits of each pose, but you’ll also reduce stress, which will help keep you healthy all flu season long. Legs Up the Wall All inversions help lymph fluid and immune cells move through your body. Sit sideways next a wall (or the

headboard of your bed). Lie down on one side, facing away from the wall with butt touching it. Using arms, lift legs up the wall as you roll over onto back. Allow arms to fall on either side of you (palms can face up for openness or down for an extra level of grounding). Breathe here for at least 10 breaths. Down Dog Moves white blood cells through your body as well as draining the sinuses. Begin on all fours. Tuck toes and lift hips high, reaching tailbone toward the ceiling. Reach heels back toward the mat without touching. Drop head so that neck is long. Wrist creases stay parallel to the front edge of the mat. Press into the knuckles of forefingers and thumbs to alleviate pressure from wrists. Breathe here for 5 to 10 deep breaths. Bridge Chest opener that stimulates thymus glands, which are a main immunity organ
Begin lying on back, bend knees and place feet on the ground hip-distance apart with arms on either side of you, reaching toward heels. Pressing into feet (especially into the big toe mound), lengthen through tailbone and lift hips. Interlace hands together underneath, and if it feels good, wiggle shoulders closer together one shoulder at a time. Keep the outer edges of feet parallel. Stay here for 5 to 10 deep breaths. Seated Spinal Twist Twists help detoxify the body by getting things moving, as well as activate the secondary organs of the immune system. Sit with legs long in front. Bend right knee and place right foot outside of left knee (you can keep left leg long or fold it in like a half-cross-legged seat). Wrap left arm around right leg and place right hand on the ground behind sacrum. Use each inhale to lengthen spine and each exhale to let stress and worries go. Breathe here for 5 to 10 deep breaths. Repeat on the other side. ● noosatoday.com.au

VEGIES PACK A PUNCH FOR KIDS TOO - SO GET ON 'EM! BY HOLLIE HARRIS Regional and remote kids face unique challenges when it comes to eating the recommended amount of vegetables, new research has found. An Edith Cowan University-led study has found that children in regional and remote Western Australia need a major boost of vegetables in their diets. The study, involving children aged 9-13 years and their caregivers from across the state, shows that only a paltry 13.4 per cent of kids get sufficient vegetables in their daily diets. While many might point to picky eating and a lack of cooking skills, only 11.8 per cent of caregivers indicated that their children didn’t like the taste of vegetables. A majority also reported knowing how to incorporate vegetables into meals. Nutrition lecturer and lead author Dr Stephanie Godrich from the School of Medical and Health Sciences said other factors are clearly at play. “Over half of the respondents indicated they would eat healthier food if their food outlets stocked healthier options,” Dr Godrich said. “And one-third pointed to food quality as being ‘sub-optimal’. “This includes vegetables not being fresh in their local shops or spoiling soon after getting home.” Price was also an issue, with 79.1 per cent believing food was more expensive for them than in other communities. Choice was a factor - people who agreed
THREE … Sneak in some goodness Although our kids should be brought up thinking of vegies as awesome, sneaking more serves into meals is even better.
Juicy corn is ideal for boosting those vegie servings. they had enough food outlets in their town were ten-times more likely to eat enough vegetables than those who felt strapped for options. On the plus side, researchers found healthy eating messaging to have a positive effect on habits; caregivers’ ability to recall messages relating to vegetables was linked to adequate vegetable intake among their children. Promotion and intervention One recommendation included the implementation of a promotional campaign focusing on vegetable consumption. Future messaging might remind families they have options beyond the fresh produce section. “Frozen and no added salt tinned offerings provide more opportunities for children to consume adequate quantities of vegetables, at a more affordable cost
and with fewer quality issues than fresh vegetables,” Dr Godrich says. “These are convenient, and they are usually more readily available when their fresh counterparts are out of season. “However, improvements to regional and remote food supply are crucial. Town planning that facilitates multiple options for families to purchase vegetables and greater support for regional-level food supply could be useful strategies.” Intake of vegetables is particularly important for children, with the vitamins, minerals and fibre shown to help prevent future chronic diseases and moderate weight. The Australian Dietary Guidelines (2013) stipulate that children 9-11 and girls 12-13 should have five serves of vegetables a day, with boys 12-13 needing five and a half serves. ●
1
When cooking pasta: Near the end of the pasta cooking time, add your child’s favourite vegetable to the boiling water, drain and combine it with the sauce. ●
2
2. Finely shred zucchini or summer squash and add it to casseroles. Its mild flavour blends in seamlessly with other flavours while adding important vitamins and minerals. ●
3
3. When you’re making a meal with mince or meat-based spaghetti sauce: Reduce the amount of ground beef and add some finely chopped mushrooms to the mix. The meaty texture of mushrooms is similar to the ground beef, and they absorb the rich flavours of the sauce. ●

DOLPHINS FINISH SEASON SMILING NOOSA DOLPHINS UNDER 7 Wow, what an exciting last round of the season, Under 7s played down at Caloundra for their final games of the year and how awesome were our boys. The first game was just a warm-up against Caloundra Black and we were just giving them a little tease of what was about to come in the second game against Caloundra Gold. It was the boys' first ever game at tackle in preparation for next year and boy did we unleash some sensational play. The sideline was going wild, there was defence coming out of nowhere, tries being scored left, right and centre. We have had a fantastic season from the Under 7 team and we look forward to more of it next year. Domino's Players of the Match: The Whole Team. UNDER 9 Noosa Reds 40 def Caloundra 0 Noosa Reds 30 def Brothers 5 A howling westerly and smoke-filled air set the scene as the Reds' season came down to the wire with two games against quality opposition. The boys have worked hard all season and they weren’t about to let the last two games of the season upset their perfect record as they took to the field with a focus and concentration rarely witnessed in a nine-year-old. Defence was stout in the first game against the Lighthouses as a well-structured forwards' effort set up space for the backs to roam and score several tries. The normally strong Brothers team had been worn down with two hard games against the Noosa Whites and Fins, and although they never gave up, the Reds' attack was relentless and determined with a display that made the coaching staff proud. Thanks for a great season boys! Domino's Players of the Match: George White and Darcy Fairbanks. Noosa Dolphins What a way to finish the Under 9 Dolphins season - it was running rugby all round winning the double against Brothers and Caloundra. Wilkie pounced from the ruck to score early while Ethan again showed his determination as a ball runner and tackler. Rory weaved some magic and MARGIE WINS AT COOROY COOROY GOLF - WOMEN TUESDAY Event: Third Round Club Championships - Stroke. Trophy: Bissett Electrical Contractors, Pomona. Winner: Margie Lucas (61). Josh Whitehill on the attack for Noosa... with Clive Burns. Jaxon had them puzzled as to which way he was going to step. Phoenix charged the ball up with the opposition falling off like flies. Harry and James tackled like Trojans with Charlie zipping up the blind side for points. CJ and Richie applied too much pressure as the day began to lean our way. It would have been easier with Serena on the paddock but they didn’t anyway and finished on top! Well played Fins! Domino's Players of the Match: CJ Connolly and Richie Bourne. Noosa White Super Saturday of Junior Rugby Union this week against Brothers White and also against Flinders. Noosa White beat both teams convincingly by 30 points. Even though the windy conditions at Brothers were not favourable for either teams or spectators, Noosa White once again showed the true meaning of teamwork and sportsmanship for their very last two games of the season. A huge thank you to the amazing coaching team of Chris Fuller, Scott Cairns and Butch Uechtritz who have put their hearts and souls into the Under 9s Noosa White team. UNDER 13 (Undefeated) Noosa 54 def University 17 After a slow start on a windy morning at Eumundi, Noosa put in another superb performance and go into the semi-finals on Saturday with a 100 per cent winning record this season. They finish top of the ladder with 74 points out of a possible maximum of 75. Congratulations Noosa! Jarrah Charlesworth had another great game scoring 3 tries and kicking 7 conversions to increase his seasons tally to 164 points. PIRATES ON TREASURE TRACK Last Sunday saw the Noosa Pirates travel to Caloundra to take on the Sharks in a knockout final of the 2017 season. The winners of this clash would continue their road to a possible premiership. The losers would commiserate with a drink or 20 in the coming days! The Pirates showed their hand by introducing first gamer Blake Wilson straight into the action and it didn’t take long for the debutant to show what he could do, crossing in the corner to give the Pirates a dream start to proceedings. The Pirates showed why they will be a major threat in these finals, appearing in control from the first whistle. Half time saw the Pirates in front by 20 points to four. Coach Ron Greentree knew that the task was only half done, and told his charges like only he can, what needed to be done. The players responded in kind, and with great support from the crowd who came to cheer their team on, the Pirates were relentless in the remainder of the match. When the final buzzer blew, Noosa were victorious by 40 points to 18. Try scorers: Blake Wilson 3, Brent Warr, Zane McCarthy, Zach Friend, Jack Cornford, Dan Murphy, 1 each. Goals: Gus Rangihuna 3, Sam Burns, 1. Last Saturday saw the Division 2 Noosa Pirates travel to Maroochydore to take on Maroochydore in their knock-out finals clash. Maroochydore took control early in the match leading by 10 points after 14 minutes of play. The Pirates dug deep and contained their opponents who had the favour of a strong breeze in the first half which they utilised to their advantage, extending the lead to 16 points at the main break. The second half saw the Pirates battle manfully yet were unable to overcome their opponents, succumbing to a 34 points to four loss.
Get ready to cheer on the Pirates in the grand final. 172072 Although this was not the final result that the players were hoping for, they can hold their heads high on what has been a very turbulent season for all concerned. Congratulations on the efforts shown this year both on and off the field, and let's look forward to the future. Try scorer: Seaton Reid 1. This Saturday sees the Noosa Pirates travel to Kawana to take on the Dolphins in a match that will decide who has the right to play in the grand final against Maroochydore. Pirates support will be needed this week so get along to Kawana and cheer the team on - it is important to you club and your team. The game is at 5.30pm, Saturday 26 August. Bring a jumper and a blanket because it will be cold. All Pirates supporters, wear your team colours and let's create a wave of blue and gold and cheer the boys to victory! ●

AWARDS FOR OUTSTANDING SERVICE At the recent Sunshine Coast Annual Dinner and Awards of Excellence, Sunshine Beach and Noosa Heads both featured in awards for outstanding achievements for the 2016/17 season. Held at the Maroochydore Surf Club, for Sunshine Beach it was definitely a night to remember. Following what was a very successful season in competition, club captain Scott Summers upheld their club’s success by being the recipient of three major awards in the area of lifesaving and leadership. For the second year in a row, Scott was named as the Sunshine Coast Life Saver of the Year. His second award came when he was named Branch Operations Support Officer; and following this he was awarded the Clive Hammond Memorial Silver Medal for his outstanding contribution to surf lifesaving on the Sunshine Coast. Regarding the Clive Hammond Medal, the name of the winner from each of the state branches is forwarded to state centre for final judging as the overall Queensland Gold Medal recipient. When questioned by the Master of Ceremony regarding his attitude to his work as a volunteer lifesaver his reply said it all: “I came from a military background where I was serving my country, now as a lifesaver I am serving the community.’’ Another Sunshine Beach member to receive a major award, the Junior Activities Member of the Year, was Clare Derrington;
From left: Ross and Helen Bartlet, Craig Law, Nick Sloman, Abbie Tolano, Clare Derrington, Tara Lees, Bill and Lyn Twigger, and front: Scott Summers. and for his outstanding contribution to surf sports Nick Sloman was named Athlete of the Year. It was this young man, who after winning a gold medal for swimming at the Australian Titles (early morning) walked straight from the beach to be driven home to Sunshine so that he could fulfill his afternoon patrol obligations. Junior Athlete of the Year was Abbey Tolano and Rookie Official of the Year was Tara Lees. Not to be left out, club president Craig Law, was for the second year named as the Team Manager of the Year; and finally Sunshine Beach was named Aggregate Surf Sports Club of the Year. Over the hill at Noosa, senior member Barry Leek was also amongst the winners

FIRST UNDAY CLUB S 1ST R OCTOBE
when he received two major awards of the evening; the first being the Official of the Year and following this the Volunteer of the Year. In the junior section Under 14, Lifesaver of the Year was Kai Thompson and Masters Athlete of the Year Alison Pegg. All in all it was a good night for both clubs; and well done to all who were acknowledged for their outstanding contribution during the season. To Barry Leek - Volunteer of the Year - and Scott Summer - Clive Hammond Medal, we wish them good luck. Their awards make them finalists in the State Awards to be announced at a gala dinner at the Gold Coast Casino on Saturday night. Last weekend the Noosa club received some sad news with the passing of Life
Barry Leek. Member Keith Skinnerton. Keith, a Gympie boy, was educated at the Christian Brothers College and like so many travelled to Noosa every weekend to fulfil his club obligations. Keith joined in the late ’40s and through the years held several positions including that of club captain. Fellow Life Member Merv Schriber said, “Keith, answered to the nickname of Pussy; was a good club person and was highly regarded - someone you could always depend on. In winter he played for Gympie Brothers Rugby League and was also a member of the boxing club; a great all-round athlete and family man. To his family and friends, our deepest sympathy.
TYLER ON WORLD STAGE BY RON LANE The phone call came in early 2016, and when Tyler Blizzard of Tasmania picked up the phone he was about to retire from the world of amateur boxing. He was getting nowhere he had had enough. But on the other end of the phone, Cooroy amateur boxing coach Mark Evans had other ideas. “No way, mate, you have got too much talent; pack up your bags and come and live with me and my family. Now, some 18 months later, he is in Hamburg as a member of the nine-man Elite Australian Amateur Boxing Team, chosen to represent his country in the biggest tournament in the world; the Elite Men’s Amateur World Boxing Championships. Standing in his corner will be his personal coach Mark Evans. Not only is he Tyler’s coach, but he is also there in his official capacity as the assistant coach of the Australian team; a great achievement for our local sporting community. For this tournament, there will be 289 athletes representing 85 countries and there can be no doubt; our Tyler boxing in the 52kg limit, will be up against the best in the world. Educated at St Patricks College in Launceston, Tasmania, Tyler has an impressive record of winning four Australian Titles and two National Golden Gloves. But, perhaps his biggest achievement was when he boxed as a member of the Qld team in Dungarvan, Waterford Ireland, in the International Celtic Cup Championship. Not only did Qld win the tournament but Tyler along with fellow team member Taylah Robinson, also of the Impact Boxing Academy Cooroy, won a coveted Celtic Championship Belt as the only undefeated fighters in their division. The championships start on Friday and
Coach Mark Evans, Tyler Blizzard and Steve Blizzard. we wish not only Tyler Blizzard but our whole Australian boxing squad all the very best. While this is going on, our other Impact Boxing Academy champion, Ella Boot, gold medal winner at the recent Youth Commonwealth Games in the Bahamas, is in the AIS Canberra, training with the Elite Girls team who are preparing for the Commonwealth Games. For Ella who is still a Youth, this is a great six-day training camp; a major part of her preparation for the Youth World Titles to be held in India in November. Definitely a great week of achievement for the Cooroy Impact Amateur Boxing Club! Well done to all concerned. â—? noosatoday.com.au

Horta, the Nobel laureate who has been president, prime minister and the cornerstone of his country’s long walk to freedom. A hero of mine for decades, RamosHorta in person did not disappoint, a dapper gentleman with a ready smile, whose responses to my questions were a delicate balance between good humour and profound wisdom. At the conclusion of the interview at his seafront offices, the most famous man in the country posed for selfies with filmer Shaun Cairns and myself, then climbed into his Mini Moke and sped off to his next engagement. But most of our subsequent interviews and filming has been with ordinary Timorese with extraordinary stories, because virtually no one in the world’s smallest and youngest island nation has been untouched by the bloody fight for freedom, even those who have been born since the bloodbath surrounding the referendum of 1999, which finally ended the Indonesian occupation, and in whose hands the future now lies. Working with, and on behalf of, Timor
Leste’s leading human rights organisations, we have heard stories that bring tears to my eyes just recalling them now, and yet they are not war yarns of bravado - they are lessons in humanity. Saturday night is party night in Dili, with music in the streets and young people dancing on the beachfront. We were fortunate to be taken to a benefit concert for the pioneering Australian journalist and activist Jill Jolliffe, who is now ailing. People spoke movingly about Jill’s good works, but the night was given over to a constant rotation of Timor Leste’s best and most vibrant musicians and singers. The quality of the performances on a state of the art outdoor stage and sound system was one thing, but what really captivated me was the power of the songs and the poetry, almost exclusively about the fight for freedom. Sung in their native Tetum, the words meant little but the passion of the delivery meant everything, with the big crowd joining in and power-fisting the night air from reggae to rap, ballads to spirituals. It was like a refreshing blast from the ‘60s

Back in 1973 in Portugal I heard from a local friend about the island of Timor at the bottom of the Spice Islands, which had been a colonial outpost the Portuguese were in the throes of losing amidst bloodshed in paradise. I decided I wanted to go there and the following year attempted unsuccessfully to get a visa. I guess foreign journalists were not wanted at that time, and indeed the killings at Balibo followed just a year later. Now I’m finally here, and the independent nation of Timor Leste has been at peace for more than a decade, although just this morning a few blocks from our hotel police fired their guns to disperse a student protest over government excesses. So in some respects it might be an uneasy peace, but everywhere we have pointed our cameras so far, we have seen the smiling faces that are evidence of a new and vibrant culture that is taking the country forward, away from the dark shadows of 40 years of violence. Just hours after our arrival in Dili, we were honoured with a long and expansive interview with Excellencio Jose Ramos-
With Jose Ramos-Horta.
- with less feedback! We’ve been in the mountains too, travelling for hours on pot-holed goat tracks past the one-time hideouts of the resistance movement to reach small villages where we’ve been welcomed into humble dirt floor homes where plates of delicious local foods and pots of home-grown coffee have been laid out for us. Travelling with human rights workers who have been a lifeline for these people has given us a privileged insight into both the poverty of the country and the nobility of those who have next to nothing, but will willingly share it. As I write this, my week in Timor is coming to an end. It has been an eye-opener in many ways I could not have imagined, but I know that long after this trip is over, I’ll have the smiling faces of Timorese children stamped on my brain. As Jose Ramos-Horta told us: “Despite everything that has happened, our people are the happiest in the world, and it is written on their smiling faces everywhere you look." ● 12352455-LB20-17

SOFTBALL SET FOR SUMMER SEASON - LET’S PLAY BALL! Children, teenagers and adults are getting ready to “play ball” in the Noosa softball summer season which starts on Saturday 2 September - and new and past players are encouraged to join up. Boys and girls from as young as four years of age can sign-on on Wednesday 30 August, from 3.30pm to 5.30pm, to play softball, a non-contact sport, in teams from Little League to under-13, under-15, under-17 and adults. Competition is held at the same time every Saturday morning at the Tewantin Sports Complex in Butler Street for beginner and experienced players. Noosa District Softball Association president Richard Wakeham said newcomers could learn ball skills in a fun team atmosphere, while experienced players enjoy friendly competition. “Softball’s a great sport for kids who want to learn skills and have fun, and with teams right through to under-17s, Seniors and Masters, it can be a life-long activity,” Richard said. “Little League for ages 4-9 years is a great way for the kids to learn ball skills and have fun with their team-mates or to build on skills they already have. “They can then go on to play in the older teams, become an umpire or be a mentor for the younger players.” He said three clubs, Redsox, Dodgers and Slammers, field teams in the various age groups and provide playing shirts, bats, gloves and balls. Qualified training is available each week for beginner to advanced players.
FUN AT THE RACES DAY
Softball action in Noosa. “Any adults who played softball when they were younger or who would just like to have a go are also welcome to come along to social softball games on Saturday afternoons,” Richard said. Several Noosa players were chosen for regional representative teams last year at State carnivals and five played in Queensland teams, including Luke Thomas and Shinai Gibbins who were also selected in Australian softball teams and played in
HOOK, LINE & SINKER
the International Friendship Series. “We’d love to see a Noosa player or two in the Australian softball team at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo,” Richard said. Sign-on days for Noosa softball for all ages are at the Noosa District Sports Complex, off Noosa-Cooroy Road, Tewantin on Wednesday 30 August from 3.30-5pm. For information email noosasoftball@gmail.com or phone 0407 532 722. ●

NOOSA WEATHER FORECAST JACK MANGROVE
THURSDAY Possible thunderstorm
IT’S ALL ABOUT THE FLATHEAD IN THE RIVER Quality fish have been caught in the lower stretches of the river with the best results seeming to be on the run-out tide. Whole fish baits like whitebait, hardy heads and frogmouth pilchards have been the best dead bait offerings. For those of you who love chasing them on lures, soft plastics in both the four-inch paddle tails and prawn profiles have been successful. There have been plenty of quality whiting caught around Weyba Creek, Munna Point, the Frying Pan and Gympie Terrace areas. Live worm baits have been securing the better fish. These windy conditions have been perfect for chasing whiting with surface lures. Popper around the 70mm size has been very successful. Some good sized tailor are still around in the lower stretches of the river. Live baits and fresh flesh baits have been the best option to target these fish. The night owls have seen the odd mangrove jack caught. Paddle vibes and live baits have been accounting for some good fish when fished around heavy structure. Trevally catches have also improved over the last week with that morning and rite afternoon tide, poppers and surface walkers have claimed some great fish in the low light periods. noosatoday.com.au
Plenty of anglers have started there pursuit of mud crabs already, some good bucks have been caught in pots loaded with fresh mullet. On the beach live worm baits have been accounting for some good whiting from the gutters along the eastern beaches and the North Shore. Those same gutters have been producing good sized tailor at dusk and dawn. Dart and bream are in good numbers on the high tides. We are still hearing of good schools of tailor moving north with Teewah to Double Island the most productive, for those that are planning the trip to Frazer, good reports of tailor are starting to filter in. Don’t forget to buy your baits locally as bait on the Island can be a bit pricy. For the offshore anglers the wind and swell conditions last weekend were a bit average with both the wind and swell up, for those in larger craft that did get outside, there have been some large cobia caught around North and Chardons reefs. Fishing with live baits like yakkas and slimies on a floater rig has seen the best results on these fish. Sunshine Reef has producing sweetlip, moses perch snapper and trout. Fishing hard to the reef with a size 10 ball sinker

Jonny Beck with a flathead. right down to the hook has been very successful. Mackerel are also really starting to come on line with good schools of spotted mackerel rounding up bait. Both spotted and school mackerel have been taken in close as well as divers reporting small schools of larger rouge Spanish mackerel also cruising the closer reefs. So on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures. ●
