■ Council funding suspension challenged...

Radio shock waves “This misunderstanding has caused confusion in the discussions and relationship during funding negotiations.” Casey councillor Wayne Smith, who has been a council delegate on the radio station’s board for two years, said the radio station’s management was making decisions without input from the board. “There were decisions being made in plans to employ people, and council felt that it was reasonable management couldn’t do that without board approval and that has happened without board approval,” he said. “We are funding a not-for-profit organisation and a lot of community money is going into it, and we can’t be part of an organisation that is not open and transparent.” “The management the leadership has to consult with the board, and major decisions have to be come before the board and that hasn’t been happening.” While the current funding for Casey Radio is in limbo, both parties are willing to keep an open dialogue to continue their partnership. “We are always open to Casey Council or any other councils to approach us with funding proposals that respect the fact that we are an independent not-for-profit organisation servicing residents in many councils within the South Eastern Melbourne region,” Mr Morton said. While Cr Smith has resigned from the board of the station, he will stay on as a member of the station’s committee to oversee council recommendations. “Council hasn’t cut them adrift, and they still have to come back and prove they have a much better governance model; hopefully that will happen,” he said. “The radio station is a benefit to Casey, and we just need to make sure they are governed properly.”

Casey Central helped raise more than $300 through donations and the sale of Daffodil Day pins and pens. The state total raised was more than $55,000. Customers had their windows washed and tanks filled by team members at Coles Express, with money raised going to Cancer Council’s support services in the community. Coles Express Casey Central site

Since Coles Express’ partnership with Cancer Council began in 2011, customers and team members across Australia have helped to raise more than $4.4 million for Cancer Council Australia. All money raised will go towards supporting cancer councils from funding world-class cancer research, prevention and advocacy campaigns and providing ongoing support and information to people impacted by cancer.

Casey Radio has hit back at council for its decision to pull funding from the station. City of Casey Council voted to cease funding arrangements with Casey Radio until June 2018, citing conflict with the radio’s management for the decision. Council voted to hold funding for the radio station in abeyance and pull its membership from the radio’s board until council is satisfied management at the station improved. However, 3SER president Adrian Morton said the radio station had met all demands made by council in relation to funding. “The funding decision cannot be in any way associated with any compliance issues at South Eastern Radio Association,” Mr Morton said. “The association has been fully compliant in every area of its operations.” Mr Morton said the council had “fundamentally misunderstood” the station’s operations and the station had no obligation to abide by council’s demands. “South Eastern Radio Association is an independent not-for-profit association with revenue streams from multiple sources such as sponsors, benefactors, grants, membership fees and revenue generating projects. Casey Council funding falls into the sponsorship category,” he said. “The association is independent from sponsors or benefactors; it reserves the right to consider all recommendations without any obligations.” “It appears that Casey Council’s misunderstanding of the association’s governance structure has led to a view and recommendation that the committee of management should be sacked and replaced by paid professionals.”

Tech focus in China deal By Victoria Stone-Meadows Health, tourism, agriculture, innovation and education will be the focus points of Casey council’s ongoing relationship with Dujiangyan City of inland Sichuan Province of China. The council passed a recommendation to adopt a China engagement strategy without discussion at their meeting on Tuesday 15 August. The newly adopted strategy will see Casey Council bolstering relationships with Dujiangyan City in these areas and encouraging investment in the region by their Chinese counterpart. The strategy was drafted following mayor Sam Aziz and Cr Wayne Smith’s visit to China in April this year to establish an economic partnership with a Chinese sister city. The most tangible changes brought

about by the strategy will be on the innovation stage with Casey Council committing to working hand-in-hand with Chinese tech companies to bring their business to the region. As part of this strategy, council will create a Casey Cardinia Account on WeChat - the most widely used social media application in China - to engage prospective investment from Dujiangyan City in a familiar environment. The Casey-Cardinia Business Hub will have a dedicated China Desk to assist local businesses in dealing with language, cultural and business barriers. Casey Council will also establish a dedicated Chinese language investment portal that will provide information and assistance to help stakeholders secure investments in the region.

Council’s China Engagement Strategy will inform ongoing development at the Berwick Health and Education Precinct that incorporates the new St John of God Hospital, Chisholm TAFE, and Federation University. The strategy will also encourage representatives from the precinct to be involved in any future trade missions made by council to China and is included in the itinerary for any visiting Chinese delegates. Federation University will also play a major part in council’s relationship with Dujiangyan City by providing Chinese-focused courses and partnerships. Included in the strategy is the forming of an official partnership between Federation University and a Chengdubased university to support language

and cultural courses in local schools and community learning facilities. Casey Council will also audit schools in the Casey-Cardinia region to assess levels of Chinese language teaching as part of the strategy. The focus around agribusiness in the strategy will see council actively assisting local food exporters to take advantage of export opportunities to their Chinese partner. The main focus of the China Engagement Strategy in this space will have council assisting Casey-based food businesses to navigate Chinese export rules and regulations. Casey Council has outlined a whole host of ways to encourage more tourism and sport from China into the Casey Cardinia Region in the strategy. A Lantern Festival for City of Casey

to be held in the first week of October is set to be the centrepiece of council’s tourism focus of the strategy. Council will look to partner with established tourist attractions such as the Botanic Gardens in Cranbourne, Puffing Billy and the soon-to-be-revamped Gumbuya Park to specifically attract tourism from China. They will also look into utilising Casey Fields as a resource for Chinese sports teams in their off-seasons and look at sporting exchange programs for athletes between Casey and Dujiangyan City. Further to their own China Engagement Strategy, Casey Council has also committed to working closely with state and federal governments into the future to establish closer economic ties to China.

Bunjil entertains in city fashion By Victoria Stone-Meadows As the opening day for council’s behemoth Bunjil Place project looms on the horizon, tickets have gone on sale for the first performances to be held in the brand new venue. Shows for adults and kids will see big names in the Australian entertainment industry take the stage in the opening months of Bunjil Place. Tickets are available to see funny man Sammy J in his hilarious autobiographical stage show ‘Hero Complex’ on Thursday 9 November. In the show reflecting his reallife experiences, Sammy J abandons his law degree to travel the world and sing funny songs for a living. Sammy J said he was excited to be one of the first comedians to perform at Bunjil Place. “I look forward to sharing a great night with the locals,” he said. “I’m also honoured that they created an entire new entertainment space just for my performance. As I said to the mayor, you can’t put a price on laughter.” Australian comedic Royalty Dave O’Neil will be bringing his biggest hits to Bunjil Place on Thursday 14 December with tickets on sale now. International guests are also on the menu with the US-based Glenn Miller Orchestra bring their unique brand of swing music to Bunjil on Tuesday 31 October.

Fun for all ages will be on offer when Room on the Broom comes to town with music, laughs and scary fun for kids aged three and up. The team behind The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo’s Child will be bringing their stage show to Bunjil on Thursday 2 November. With more music and events to grace the halls of Bunjil in the coming months, ticks are also available for Telling Tales, a theatrical odyssey which will celebrate and share the stories of some interesting local residents, and Casey Sings, which will see some of the best local choirs come together for an incredible mass choral event. City of Casey Mayor Sam Aziz said Bunjil Place offered so much for musicians and entertainers, residents of Casey could expect world class entertainment right on their doorstep. “With such a diverse mix of facilities, Bunjil Place will offer unprecedented entertainment options for the region from professional shows and live gigs in the theatre and studio, to vibrant outdoor events in the community plaza and interactive exhibitions in the gallery,” he said. “The first tickets going on sale marks a momentous occasion as we prepare to usher in a new era entertainment and bring city-style experiences to the south-east.” For further details about events and to purchase tickets, visit www. bunjilplace.com.au.

Bank crashed By Cam Lucadou-Wells

12363156-JV35-17

A 27-year-old Hampton Park man escaped with minor injuries after he crashed a car into the front of a bank on 22 August. The Ford Falcon squeezed past a parked car and rammed a front pillar of the Commonwealth Bank branch at Somerville Road about 5.50pm. The impact caused bricks and a beam to cascade from the bank’s facade onto the footpath. Media have reported that two people using an ATM dived away from the vehicle and were not injured. A Victoria Police spokeswoman said the driver was believed to have lost control of the vehicle. He is assisting police with their inquiries. Paramedics treated the man’s minor injury at the scene. He was not taken to hospital.

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Creativity comes to Berwick artist Glo Edkins in sweeping, colourful brush strokes. But the energetic painter, who has entered six portraits into the prestigious Archibald Prize, says creativity seems to be a dying art. Ms Edkins has had her third portrait accepted at a state-based Salon des Refuses - a select exhibition of paintings that didn’t make the Archibald final cut of 42. Or also known as the ones that got away. This year’s painting was of a treasured friend and arts volunteer Jill Page, who recently received an Order of Australia Medal. “I tell all my friends they should do something special, and I can put them in the Archibald,” Ms Edkins jokes. “I drew (Jill) as if she’s on stage holding a sheet of music in her hand. “She’s sort of smiling at us like Mona Lisa.” It’s what Ms Edkins calls a traditional portrait, something different to this year’s controversial Archibald winner. “I thought the aim of the Archibald was to get a likeness of a person,” she says of the winner. “If that’s what they want, next time I won’t make the effort!” Ms Edkins says the skill of portraiture - which requires studying human beings - is being overwhelmed by photo realism. Even among Archibald works. “People are tracing and colouring in their photos. It’s all the rage and look lovely.” It points to a dying in creativity, she says. “It’s extremely important that

Halsall, McMahon and Waxman were subsequently selected for the Salon des Refuses. A great inspiration was working as a PA to the late Dr Joseph Brown, a prolific Australian art collector whose collection was donated to the National Gallery of Victoria. Staring at the genius of Arthur Boyd on a daily basis was both intimidating and inspiring, she said.

Hidden Faces: The 2017 Victorian Salon des Refuses is on from 28 August to 10 September at Pan Pacific Melbourne, South Wharf, 2 Convention Centre Place, Melbourne. Ms Edkins is also guest portrait artist at Prominence Art Society and Berwick Art Society’s “The Greatest Art Show” at Nossal High School auditorium, 100 Clyde Road, Berwick, on 23 and 24 September, 10am to 5pm.

I recently received an invitation from the State Member for Narre Warren North Luke Donnellan to attend a morning tea next month at the Narre Warren Bowls Club. At the bottom of the invitation was a suggestions slip. It said if you want to make a suggestion, share an idea, or raise a concern, just return this slip. Silly me, I should have known that this meeting is really only intended for Labor Party supporters. I returned the suggestion slip to Luke Donnellan’s office with a comment for his agenda. It read “Melbourne is not the most liveable city in the world because governments are not accepting responsibility for an unsustainable population growth rate. Victoria’s underemployment rate is at a record high of 9.5 per cent; a key measure of economic health. Growth should be moderated to better reflect the capacity of the Victorian economy” at this time. Shortly after, I received a call from Robyn Hale, Luke Donnellan’s office manager and adviser. She informed me she could arrange a “private meeting” for me with Luke Donnellan, but my comments could not be placed on the meeting agenda as this was not the point of the meeting. I replied that growth and underemployment are public issues that are interconnected and impacting on the south-eastern area. But according to Robyn Hale, it is not appropriate to place them on the agenda of Luke Donnellan’s pending public meeting, even though I was invited to do so. This meeting is, therefore, not really about listening to the concerns of local people, in public, it’s about promoting failed Labor Party policies and Luke Donnellan. In my opinion, Luke Donnellan should now follow Judith Graley’s decision and not seek to stand again for the state seat of Narre Warren North. Both Judith Graley and Luke Donnellan appear to believe that the only policy solution for problems created by high growth is more and more infrastructure. Wrong.

Alcohol action Whenever issues of family violence occur, inevitably concerns of alcohol tend to raise their ugly head. There is a part answer to this problem, namely lessons and reduced alcohol advertising. Government legislation similar to tobacco legislation can be readily implemented. Yes, it can be done and needs to be done as a part means of reducing family violence. Ron Roberts, Cranbourne.

Socially speaking On Wednesday 23 August, the CranbourneBerwick News Facebook Page shared the story of nine-year-old Rottweiler Sophie who had been placed in the pound after being accused of attacking sheep. Sophie’s family were fighting to get their dog back after she had been kept in the pound for five weeks. The story bought forward a lot of strong opinions from readers and here is how they reacted online. Claire Hoskins: Unless there is proof let her back home to her family. How unfair! Just

12361401-CB34-17

because she was in wrong place doesn’t mean she did it! These people need to get a brain. Makes me so cross! Renee McLaren: There’s no proof. I have a placid Rottweiler. Placid Rottweilers don’t ‘kill’! This is nothing but a judge of breed. Give this heartbroken dog back to her devastated family you small minded idiots. Jan Riley: Christ Casey council! You have so much to answer for. Not only the poor dog Sophie either. Such an incompetent council. Sally Toussaint: You need proof. This is a member of a family just like the kids. You

cannot just grab any dog and blame it for something. What about foxes? Were the sheep seen being attacked? Kelly Warren: Resolve as quickly as possible? Five freekin’ weeks is too long. Give the poor family back their dog. Judie Hedrick: Hope this is resolved soon, five weeks is a long time for an infirm older dog to be away from its family! Sharmila Austin: Ridiculous! Let this dog go back to his family. Grow up Casey council! Belinda Burford: Hope they are not charged for the impounding once the dog is cleared!

Green light for bowls roof By Cam Lucadou-Wells A spectacular, state-of-the-art roof could elevate Narre Warren Bowls Club into one of Victoria’s premier bowls venues. On the verge of the club’s 30th anniversary, the proposed light-weight translucent canopy with LED ceiling lights across the club’s two greens is part of an ambitious “game plan”. It’s a far cry from the friendly club’s early days when members drank ‘tinnies’ in an under-construction clubhouse with a bare building frame and no roof. It also points to a reversal of the club’s dwindling membership since a new board took over 15 months ago. “Our charter is to become the premier small club in Victoria,” president Eric Sydenham said. “We want to be the first club that people in our community think of when they want to have a function, join a bowling club or attend a bowling club. “We want to become a community hub and we’re working towards that in various ways.” Without resorting to pokies, the 175-member club has been recently accredited the lofty Lighthouse Club status from Bowls Victoria for its high performance and innovation. Participation in bowls is generally on the rise even if some clubs are folding due to a lack of members, Mr Sydenham said. “So many young people are attracted to the game. Most of the top bowlers are under 30. “It’s a changing scene.” Long-time member Stanley Birkett said the sport’s appeal is its accessibility to all-comers. “It’s the only sport I now that

Eric Sydenham, John Uren, Stanley Birkett and Micki Horton ahead of the club's 30th anniversary. 171909 Picture: CAM LUCADOU-WELLS The club's quirky weather-vane. 171909 strength and speed is not a requirement.” “You just have to be wily,” adds member Micki Horton. The club plans to take advantage of its prime location within metres of Fountain Gate Shopping Centre and Bunjil Place. It is opening its doors to disability bowls players and school students and launching a junior academy. It drove up members with a stall at Fountain Gate and a come and try day. It’s also marketed itself - with its

floodlights, kitchen and outdoor barbecue gazebo - as a venue for work functions, barefoot bowls and Christmas parties. Major renovations such as more synthetic greens, a semi-commercial kitchen and upgraded clubrooms are on the way. The club will celebrate its 30th anniversary at its Magid Drive clubrooms on 2 September from noon. The event will be marked by first president Bob Roff rolling the first jack to mark the start of the bowls season.

Getting closer By Narelle Coulter Villawood Properties launched construction of a $5 million residents’ club at its Delaray estate in Clyde North on Wednesday 9 August. Club Delaray is the fifth residents’ club financed by the development giant. When completed the club will include a cafe, swimming pools, function space, tennis court, gymnasium, community garden and parents’ room. Villawood executive director Rory Costelloe said the club would ultimately become the property of those living at the estate and managed through an owners’ corporation. He hoped the club would help foster a sense of community among Delaray residents. “The belief at Villawood Properties has always been that there’s more to creating a living, breathing community than housing allotments - there must be opportunities for people to get to know their neighbours and build a sense of connection," Mr Costelloe said. “People come from from all different suburbs and many from overseas to this community. They don’t know their neighbours. Our job is to form that community. “One in five residents in Casey are immigrants. That they can belong to a community is a real drawcard to these buyers.” Among those looking forward to the completion of the club are Max and Pat Janssen. The Janssens moved into

Delaray residents Max and Pat Janssen with Pat's mum Doreen Woolley and dog Pepper. their new home at Delaray in January. They were the sixth residents to move into Delaray. “We saw the land from the highway and knew we wanted to live here,” Max said. “When they told us about the club and what we would be getting we thought it was fantastic.” “We are looking forward to the completion of the club with a real sense of anticipation and excitement,” Pat added. The couple said they would definitely use the gymnasium and were looking forward to enjoying a cup of coffee in the cafe. Max has already thrown himself into the Clyde com-

munity as a new recruit to the town’s fire brigade. He said a sense of community was already forming at Delaray as more and more residents moved into the estate. “People are already helping each other and making contact through the Delaray website.” Pat said she and Max also enjoyed getting to know new neighbours at “slab parties” which were held whenever a slab was poured. “It is a nice community and a new page in our lives,” Pat said. Club Delaray is expected to be completed by the middle of next year.

Woman killed in collision A 51-year-old woman from Clyde North is the latest victim of the Victorian Road toll after being killed in a car crash in South Dandenong. Police said the woman and another female passenger were traveling on the South Gippsland Highway at the Pound Road intersection, about 5.30pm, on Sunday 27 August. It is understood her car clipped another car that was attempting to turn onto the highway. Police said it appeared the woman’s car was pushed into a traffic-light pole before spinning out-of-control across the north-bound lanes of the highway. The car finally came to a rest on the grass

They released CCTV images of two men who might be able to assist with their inquiries and appealed for anyone with information to come forward. Police allege two men broke into a locked garage in Caribbean Pine Court between 7pm on 22 February and 8am on 23 February, and stole wallets and credit cards from the victim’s vehicle. Someone later that night they used one of the credit cards to spend $250 at a nearby petrol station. The men in the CCTV are perceived to be Caucasian in appearance and were wearing black hoodies with black baseball caps at the time of the offence. Enjoying last year's Casey Cardinia Foundation Charity Dinner are, from left, Matt Van Dam, Elly Van Dam, Ash Henry, Bess Henry, Dan O'Loughlin and Amy O'Loughlin. 160334

12363126-HM35-17

Dinner to help those in need Here’s the chance to have a great night out and help the community at the same time at Casey Cardinia Foundation’s Annual Charity Dinner at the Cardinia Cultural Centre on Friday 13 October. It is one of the local events of the year and in 2017 has an even greater local flavour. As well as being able to sample the best local produce, guests will be entertained by the predominantly local 13-piece band Big and Horny. And the night will all come together with the polish provided by MC Dave Whalen, who hails from Tooradin. “You can be entertained by a local band, enjoy the best of local produce and help local charities at the same time,” Casey Cardinia Foundation executive officer Therese Howell said. The charity dinner is the foundation’s major fundraiser with all money raised being ploughed back into the local community. Ms Howell said the foundation last year received grant applications from local groups to the tune of $240,000 which far exceeded its grant capacity. She said that demonstrated there was a real need for help in the Casey Cardinia region. “We need help more than ever, we simply can’t meet that need,” she said.

The 13-piece band Big and Horny will entertain guests at this year's Casey Cardinia Foundation Annual Charity Dinner. “We have more great projects out there than we have money to support them.” Ms Howell said that over the past decade and a bit the foundation had donated in the vicinity of $400,000 to local groups and projects. Last year it was able to help food relief projects like 4Cs and the Cranbourne Food Truck, disability access programs through Outlook and Livvi’s Place and a range of projects like mental health camps and camps for abused children. “We have been able to make a real difference but there are some very worthwhile projects out there that can’t get funding

at present, so it would be great to increase our capacity,” Ms Howell said. “People can come along to our charity dinner and learn about the grants we announce, learn a bit about the foundation, have a great night and contribute to the community at the same time. Tickets to the charity dinner are $135 per person or $1350 for a table of 10. They can be bought online through Trybooking at www. trybooking.com/271401. Corporate booking inquiries can be made through admin@ caseycardiniafoundation.org or by phoning 0439 905 533.

PERFECTLY positioned in sought-after Narre Warren North, Brundrett Heights offers nine slightly elevated allotments ranging from 2030 square metres to 3716 square metres. This peaceful estate is just a stone’s throw from the Narre Warren North Village, Westfield Fountain Gate, primary

CHANGES, challenges and new horizons ... As 2017 rolls on, this month, we once again look back to the significant events which have shaped the last century for one of the South-East’s most productive and successful Real Estate Agents. Some 100 years after Frank Facey opened his first office in Dandenong, the company has earned its enviable reputation through an extraordinary history of success. In previous editorials we covered the early 1900s; so we now look to the significant events of the late 1900s. By 1994, Frank Facey First National was operating from offices in Dandenong, Narre Warren, Mulgrave, Endeavour Hills and Berwick. Major land development sites, residential sales and commercialindustrial opportunities in the South East region were successfully transacted through Frank Facey First National. By 1997, Andrew Facey, (grandson of company founder, Frank Facey), together with Peter Watson, Ross Neilson and Michael Hall were partners in the business. The combined experience and enthusiasm which they brought to the table had a great influence on furthering its success. In 2002, Frank Facey First National Real Estate expanded further with an office in Glen Waverley. By now the company was entrenched in the growth of the South-East and the popularity of the area continued to soar. Always looking for innovative ways to improve the service on offer, First National Neilson Partners established its own finance department. Now run by Tom Smith, this department has access to a wide range of leading banks and lending institutions and offers free advice for

vendors and purchasers to ensure they are kept informed of the most up-to-date financial requirements and opportunities. By now Frank Facey First National/First National Neilson Partners had attracted a loyal and dedicated staff, many of whom are still as committed to the company today as they were decades ago. This is a huge achievement and testament to the quality of the company. In 2000 First National Real Estate Neilson Partners embraced ‘Quality Assurance’ and have been proud to be a ‘Quality Assured’ company since that time. It is policy of First National Neilson Partners “to give our clients the highest standard of service that they expect and deserve, whether they be vendors, purchasers, landlords or tenants”. Clearly, the last 100 years of success and loyalty owe much to this commitment. Next month we focus attention on the expansion of First National Neilson Partners into the ever-popular Pakenham area. ● 12363201-LN35-17

Offering super-fast tax returns Alan Boyd and Associates is a Berwick firm that prides itself on delivering quality, professional accounting and taxation services to clients in Berwick and surrounding areas. This time of year it’s all hands to the keyboards as principal Alan Boyd and his team work to maximise quick turnaround tax refunds for their many clients. Mr Boyd said most individual returns were prepared during the initial consultation and lodged with the ATO on the same day. “This allows for super-fast processing and many returns come back much quicker than the ATO’s 14 day service standard,” he said. The firm is also proactive in educating clients on changes in the tax framework and deliver an informative newsletter to clients at tax time, summarising issues such as ATO audit targets. Checklists are also provided to help taxpayers maximise their claims. Mr Boyd and his team can prepare returns for employees, contractors, investment property owners and investors. They also specialise in small business and have extensive experience dealing with sole traders, partnerships, companies and trusts. “We can be with you throughout your business journey” Mr Boyd said.

“Whether it’s structuring a new business or optimising results and minimising tax or refining and tuning an existing business or assisting with preparing for and exiting the business, we can give timely, accurate advice on what to do.” Self-managed super funds are also a key part to the offering at Alan Boyd and Associates, whether it be at the establishment phase, through the accumulation stage and on to pension mode. The firm’s knowledge in this area is extensive. Mr Boyd has more than 30 years’ experience in the accounting profession and is a registered tax agent and CPA. His wealth of knowledge on all things business, tax and accounting provides a solid framework for an outstanding professional advisory business. During tax season, the practice is open extended hours to help clients get their tax affairs sorted with minimal interruption to their normal daily routing. Appointments at Alan Boyd and Associates are available on Monday and Thursday evenings as well as on Saturday mornings in the heart of Berwick at Suite 2, 28 Gloucester Avenue, on the corner of Richardson Grove, next to Aussie Home Loans. For an appointment contact 9796 933 or email admin@alanboyd.com.au.

More degrees at campus Federation University Australia (FedUni) opened its doors to the students of tomorrow, attracting 600 visitors to the new Berwick campus’ open day. The Sunday 27 August event was the first for the new campus which was acquired from Monash University last year, as FedUni continues to expand its education programs in metropolitan Melbourne. The Berwick open day also coincided with the launch of six new degree programs, bringing the total number on offer at the campus to 21. The six new undergraduate degrees include: BioMed, Mechatronic Systems Engineering, Criminal Justice, Psychological Science, Social Science and Health Science. A FedUni spokesperson said the day gave secondary students the chance to see the university, ask academic staff questions and meet current students to get a taste of what life is like at university to set

Seven students from a Narre Warren dance studio have leapt onto the podium - so to speak - in a recent national dance competition. The team from Cathy-Lea Dance Works won awards in six sections at the Australian Teachers of Dancing Australasian Scholarships in Sydney. To qualify for the event, the dancers were rigorously assessed during technical dance classes and then performed two solos at NIDA in Sydney. Studio principal Cathy-Lea Smith was proud of the students’ “remarkable achievement”. “This competition is a real test of technical dance ability as well as performance skills as it has both the class component and the solo performances on stage.” The place-getters included Ella Morrison, 11, of Narre Warren, who won the sub-junior jazz scholarship and Holly Neale, 17, of Narre Warren South who won the senior jazz section and came second in the senior tap scholarship. Emily Woolcock, 14, of Narre Warren South, and Zoe Smith, 14, of Narre Warren North, placed third in their sections. Cari Weybury, 11, of Berwick, received an

Dance highlights tragedy Education

matters ROB KELLY multimedia teacher at Berwick Lodge Primary School

What does the Hillsborough disaster in England on 15 April,1989, and the 2017 mid-September Berwick Lodge Primary School dance event have in common? The answer is Wakakirri - an Australian national story-dance festival for primary and secondary school students. Every year, the Wakakirri festival inspires and motivates hundreds of schools to tell - or retell - great stories in the form of dance. From fairy tales to swashbuckling adventures, Wakakirri has it all. But this year, Berwick Lodge Primary School’s Performing Arts teacher Lorraine Montgomery decided to do something a little different. In consultation with her Grade 5/6 student dance committee and colleague Jacqui Quelch, the team choreographed a story-dance about an event that transpired long before most of the team were born – that of the infamous 1989 FA Cup semi-final game between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest. The Hillsborough disaster – as it is known resulted in 96 fatalities and 766 injuries. Fans were crushed to death due to overcrowding in the Hillsborough football stadium and eventually – after a lengthy trial – the courts determined that the victims were unlawfully killed. Mrs Montgomery, a wife and mother of two eager soccer fans herself, wanted to tell the story in memory of the 96 perished souls. “After watching a documentary about the disaster at home, and the disgusting way the innocent fans were blamed and labelled as hooligan drunks by the tabloids and authorities, I

Teacher Lorraine Montgomery and Wakakirri student Ben at Frankston’s Arts Centre. felt passionate about promoting the truth about what happened.” After learning about the tragic events surrounding the disaster, the school students felt equally passionate about promoting the truth and worked hard for months rehearsing and building props in preparation for their emotionally charged Wakakirri dance at Frankston Arts Centre on 24 August. It was a story they were ardently engaged in

and when it was time to perform ‘96’ in front of an audience of over 500 people - including judge and regular presenter on ABC TV’s Play School, Alex Papps – everyone was left spellbound. The performance was expressive and eloquent. It articulated the sadness of the tragedy, but elevated the morality and justice of the final court ruling. It was - as Mr Papps announced – “beautifully performed”.

The performance earned a lengthy applause from the audience and a special award for “Best Historical Story”. It also won a “Best T-shirt Design” award – a design that was drawn by an artistic and imaginative Grade 6 student. And to top it all off - and much to the excitement of the 92 students who performed – it was announced that the performance was to progress to the State Finals at Hamer Hall in Melbourne on 18 September. From an educational perspective, the performing arts can be overlooked in the curriculum as literacy and numeracy often take centre stage. Tests and assessments are important teaching and learning tools, but so too are opportunities for students to showcase their skills and talents in other areas of the curriculum. Wakakirri - a word that deprives from the Wangaaypuwan people meaning “to dance“ - is one such opportunity. “Wakakirri is one of those priceless learning experiences, the value of which, cannot be measured in a test, yet leaves everyone with memories of a time well spent” wrote Berwick Lodge principal Henry Grossek in his weekly newsletter to the school community on 24 August. As Berwick Lodge prepares for the next stage of the Wakakirri competition, it is important to remember for whom this tribute is for. Mrs Montgomery is proud of her students and pleased that their story-dance will be performed again to an even bigger audience in September. “To paraphrase the famous song, this is for the families of the 96 perished souls, who walked through a storm together, held their heads up high, and were not afraid of the storm. It was their determination that gained justice for the people who died on that terrible day.” To coin a Wakakirri phrase, “Chookas” to all the students – from around the state performing at the State Finals before 2661 attendees at Melbourne’s Hamer Hall on 18 September.

Connecting people with the local sport they love.

Stanton joins Stars By Russell Bennett Garfield is the first side in the West Gippsland Football Netball Competition to make a senior coaching change for 2018, with Hayden Stanton replacing former player-coach Joel Morgan at the helm at Beswick Street. Stanton, who has previously coached at Officer, Mulgrave, Doveton, the Monash Blues, and South Belgrave, this year served as the Under 19s coach at Noble Park and the defensive coach for Mick Fogarty’s senior side. He said he’d had an interest in coaching the Stars since he and his family lived in Garfield years ago. “Always in the back of my mind I’ve wanted to coach the club,” he said. “I really enjoy the company of the people there and I thought that if there was ever a club in the outer fringe, that’d be the one I’d look at.” Garfield finished the inaugural WGFNC season in eighth on the ladder with five wins and 13 losses, but Stanton sees plenty to be optimistic about in both the near and long-term future. The Stars will be active in recruitment - looking for a spearhead up forward and more quality through the engine room - but central to Stanton’s planning will be the club’s young brigade. “I talked about bringing a stronger, bigger focus around club discipline and structure without it being too mechanical,” Stanton said about his meetings with the Stars so far. “I talked with them about strategy and set-ups, and opportunity as a non-playing coach to see the game evolve and make the necessary changes throughout it. “We want to collectively drive standards around the place, but now that we’ve had a year and seen that the competition has good viability for the club, we want to be stronger again with a real emphasis on player development when it comes to the young kids. “We want to really focus on teaching them and not throwing too many of them in there when they can’t cope with it. “At Garfield we’ve got a lot of natural pace and talent but defensively, and probably physically, we’re not very strong so when we were challenged in games this year we might have been in for a quarter or two, when the whips were cracking we were found wanting. “We’ve certainly got to try and manufacture the right game plan that suits the way we need to play in that

Each of them has moved interstate, but the club looks set to retain Morgan as a player. Gun ruckman Tom Marsh is another key component that the Stars will be looking to hold on to next season, and to play more regularly. “You put Tom Marsh full-time in our side, recruit three or four gun players and develop your kids in the preseason you’re going to win another five or six games minimum,” Stanton said. “They won five this year so that’s going to put you in that bottom part of the (top) five.” Stanton and the Stars are realistic

on their expectations for 2018, but see incredible potential throughout their playing stocks. “I think the untapped ability is there and that we need to structure that in the right way - setting up a program and a process where I think guys will naturally develop and evolve,” he said. “The club has that junior base pushing through all the time so our points won’t seem to be an issue like it may be for other clubs going forward. “We’ll have a strong mindset on being really composed centre-back, and really electric centre-forward. We’ll move the ball to our forwards, but we’ll also learn how to defend the ground better. “There’s no excuses for us not to get the best out of our group. this competition - we are a destination club.” Garfield Football Director John White said the club did its due diligence during the interview process and Stanton “came highly recommended from everyone we spoke to”. “He knows his footy and how to get the best out of people,” he said. “He’s already done his preparation and homework on the playing group and presented to us a really good plan for the future - not just on game day, but for the culture and growth of the club too.” One of Garfield’s existing drawcards when it comes to player recruitment is the quality of its Beswick Street ground - one of the best playing surfaces that the Gazette’s Football liftout covers.

Clubs, governing body at loggerheads Fractious MPNFL clubs will withdraw their request for a special general meeting to remove AFL South East as their governing body after a meeting of the MPNFL clubs on Tuesday night. AFLSE informed the clubs that their request did not comply with the rules and, as a consequence, would not convene the meeting as originally requested. The clubs have until 5pm, Friday 1 September, to withdraw their request for the meeting.

The News understands the disgruntled MPNFL clubs will still challenge AFLSE’s final recommendation to have a full-divisional structure in place between the Nepean, Peninsula and South East Football Netball League’s in 2019. The disgruntled MPNFL clubs want nothing to do with the SEFNL clubs under a divisional structure. But the remaining MPNFL clubs are open to the concept, as are the SEFNL clubs who held a meeting at Bea-

consfield on Saturday to discuss the way forward. Cranbourne president Shane Baker chaired the meeting and is still confident a full-divisional structure will go ahead, and maybe as early as 2018. “We’ve been open and honest from the start, that we are united and open to anything that will assist in the betterment of football and netball in the region,” Baker said. “We’re not giving up on this. We

know AFL South East has released plans for a full divisional structure in 2019, but as a collective we’re still pushing for 2018. We think there are some great opportunities to grow, and it will be even better if those opportunities present themselves next year.” While the disgruntled MPNFL clubs are still steadfast in their resolve, a small collective of the remaining clubs is open to the idea of hitting the negotiating table with both AFLSE and the SEFNL clubs.

Redbacks back league change By David Nagel Hampton Park president Mick O’Brien is confident his club will return to its glory days after its members voted 88-7 to make the move from the South East Football Netball League (SEFNL) to the Southern Football League (SFL) in 2018. The Redbacks have had sand kicked in their face since the beginning of 2012, winning just four of 96 games, and were relying on their governing body - AFL South East - to implement a full divisional structure between the three leagues under its governance. But the full divisional structure to take place between Nepean, Peninsula and SEFNL - will be delayed for 12 months and phased in for the 2019 season. The Redbacks just can’t afford to wait any longer, with AFLSE previously suggesting that divisional football would be in place as early as this season. “We would have loved to have stayed in SEFNL, which would have been our ideal scenario going forward, to play divisional football with Nepean and Peninsula, and keep some of our local rivalries,” O’Brien explained. “But it’s been a tough road. We were promised divisional football for 2018 and now that’s just another broken promise. We just can’t keep getting belted the way we have been, it’s not good for the club, not good for our members, and certainly not good for morale.” O’Brien said SFL CEO David Cannizzo had been supportive about making the move. The SFL board will meet on Monday 11 September where it will vote on Hampton Park’s application. “The most likely scenario is that we find ourselves in division two, and that’s a standard that we’re comfortable we’ll be competitive in going forward,” O’Brien explained. “At the end of the day, we just want to enjoy our footy again and move forward in a competition structure that’s suits where we are at right now. “This year it was difficult to recruit, we spoke to 80 players and didn’t get one across the line, but already we’ve had interest in players returning for next year. We’ve got good supporters, but some have left because of the massive losing margins each week, and some of those have already committed as well.” O’Brien said it had been a tough conclusion to come to, considering the historical connection with SEFNL clubs and having a netball club that was comfortable in its current environment. “It’s been difficult for the netballers because they’ve put so much time and effort in to what they’ve been doing as well,” O’Brien said. “But this is not just about football, and not just about netball, it’s about a whole club perspective and doing what’s best for it going forward.” Hampton Park still has a few hoops to jump through, with its existing affiliates - AFLSE and SEFNL - and the SFL all needing to approve their application.

Stingrays take it up to Dragons By Nick Creely The most notable sight of the Dandenong Stingrays’ ninepoint win on Saturday was the abundance of quality out on the field at Trevor Barker Beach Oval. Combined with their high quality opponents - Sandringham Dragons - the 'Rays played a part in one of the TAC Cup’s most impressive games of the season. More than half of the players from both sides represented the wave of AFL talent set to grace the field in 2018, and they sure put on a show. In a game of ebbs and flows in momentum, the 'Rays were the much better team in the first half, leading by seven at quarter time before a dominant six goal second term saw them lead by 29 at half time. The cream of the crop Hunter Clark in the midfield, Mason De Wit off half-back, Luke Davies-Uniacke both on ball and up forward as well as composed skipper Oscar Clavarino had all the answers. But the switch in momentum by the Dragons’ star power in Andrew Brayshaw, Charlie Constable and dual athlete Ed Newman saw the home side draw within four points at the final change. Clark opened the account for the 'Rays in the final term with a classy second goal at the seventh minute mark and the 'Rays didn’t relinquish the lead after that.

Stingrays co-skipper Oscar Clavarino - who played a strong intercepting game down back - was pleased that the group played such a strong team game against a high quality opponent. “It’s great to see the boys come together at this time of the season and continue to play some good footy,” he said. “It reassures us that what we’ve done pre-season and during the early stages of the season is really paying off. “(The) Dragons are a great side and certainly have some very talented players. “At the same time, we knew as a team that we were full of talent and had an even greater asset, being team footy which I thought really showed on Saturday.” With the Stingrays having now won five of its last six matches as it gears up for a finals campaign, Clavarino identified the area of the game that has stood out the most. “I think the most impressive part of the team’s play in the last month or so is our ability to get the game on our terms and play to our strengths,” he said. “With a lot of running players we’ve become a great handball receiving team and have found a way to use that as a weapon to create attack of the half back line.” Despite playing as a strong, collective team unit, the form of inside midfielder and Morrish Medal smoky Hunter Clark turned heads once again.

In arguably his third bestafield performance in a row, Clark was incredible with his vision by hand and foot, racking up almost 30 disposals and pushing forward to kick two classy goals. De Wit and Bailey Morrish were others to play strong running games, while Clavarino and Davies-Uniacke showed their abundance of class throughout the match. The Stingrays will warm up for the finals with a final homeand-away clash against Geelong Falcons on Sunday.

VICTORIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE REVIEW - ROUND 19 The incredible home record of Casey continued on Saturday night, with the Demons finishing in fourth spot after a gritty 15-point win over Werribee. With both sides needing to win for their own finals ambitions, the Demons - who have now finished the home-andaway season with an undefeated record at home, professionally curtailed a fired-up Tigers team. An Angus Scott goal only two minutes into the match gave the Dees the early jump, before holding onto their lead at quarter time by eight-points. Scott - combined with the likes of ball magnet Ben Kennedy, Corey Maynard and rangy forward Bailey Fritsch, ran hard both ways in the second quarter to kick four goals to two and take a vital 21-point lead at half time. Light rain set in across Casey Fields throughout, and the Tigers clawed their way back into the contest. A six-goal third term to the visitors saw the margin slowly reduce, leaving the critical clash in the balance heading into the last quarter. Coach Justin Plapp asked his side to respond and do what they need to do to win - and they did. “I put a lot on our leaders,” Plapp said. “There was nothing going to

praise, but we just did what we needed to do.” Jack Trengove, Josh Wagner and Declan Keilty played fantastic games for the Dees and were named among the best, while AFL-bound Fritsch kicked three goals. The Demons face Williamstown at Burbank Oval on Saturday in the qualifying final. Meanwhile, in the Development League, the Casey Demons absolutely belted Werribee, 23.13(151) to 4.3(27). They face Port Melbourne at Box Hill City Oval in this Sunday’s qualifying final.

Race is now on for soccer finals By Nick Creely FFV STATE LEAGUES REVIEW - CATCH-UP ROUND There was just one local catch-up match played in the south-east area over the weekend, with the state league season just a fortnight away from its conclusion. Here is how each league stacks up as the season enters the business end. STATE LEAGUE 1 - SOUTH EAST While the Casey Comets currently sit mid-table with eight wins, four draws and eight losses, they are in the midst of a terrific momentum swing. Last round saw them belt South Springvale 4-0 in a comprehensive display, while the round before they toppled Mooroolbark 1-3 at Esther Park Reserve. The Comets will play fellow mid-table side Warragul United in what is a huge test for the club. At this stage of the season, the race is down to Langwarrin SC and Mornington SC to take out the State League 1 title, with only two points separating the two sides. STATE LEAGUE 2 - SOUTH EAST Last week’s disappointing 1-2 loss to Eltham Redbacks means Berwick City is likely out of the promotional race.

With three sides - the Redbacks, Doveton and Beaumaris all occupying the top three spots - it would take an almighty miracle for City to push up to the top-of-the table considering there is two matches left to play. Doveton, however, is equal on points with the Redbacks, and continue to find ways to win. The Doves are highly likely to earn promotion and just need to do enough in the final two rounds to enter the top league. STATE LEAGUE 5 - SOUTH Pakenham United capped off a month of hard with a 0-2 victory over Somerville Eagles in the only catch-up match played around the leagues. In Saturday’s match at Somerville Secondary College, United were far too strong from start to finish, in what was their eighth win of the season. With two rounds left to play, the two promotional spots have come down to three teams - Sandown Lions, Rowville Eagles and Dandenong Warriors, with the first two the most likely to jump into State League 4 next season. Pakenham sit in fifth spot, Casey Panthers in eighth, Bunyip in ninth and Drouin sit last on the table.

Cranbourne ready for mega-merger By Nick Creely VICTORIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE - WOMEN'S REVIEW - ROUND 14 After a tough and gruelling last three months, Cranbourne now finally has the chance to reset itself under the new merger with the Casey Demons and Melbourne Football Club. In their last VFL match as the Eagles, Cranbourne stood no chance in an 84-point thumping to the fourth-placed St Kilda, a

side gearing up for a finals campaign. The signs were ominous early, with St Kilda banging on their first three goals in 15 minutes, before storming out to a commanding 27-point lead at quarter time. Another five goals to the Sharks in the second saw the lead increase to almost 60-points, with the Eagles simply unable to match them in the contest. The margin looked set to be over three figures early in the fi-

nal quarter, with the Sharks leading 90-0, before a goal to Cranbourne’s Nicole Garner meant the margin wouldn’t blow out any further. There were positives for the Eagles however - skipper Kirsten McLeod enjoyed another strong game in an excellent second half of the season, Garner provided a presence, Holly Whitford took further steps in her development and Breann Moody was consistent all game. McLeod ended the season

as the club’s leading goalkicker with seven majors, closely followed by Bianca Jakobsson, Jasmine Grierson and Stephanie Brown with six goals. Jakobsson, McLeod, and the likes of Garner, Kim Cunico and Breann Moody will likely battle it out for the side’s best-andfairest award. The VFL Women’s finals get underway this weekend, with Melbourne Uni, St Kilda, Darebin and Diamond Creek the remaining four.

Eagles left shellshocked in nail-biter By Nick Creely SOUTH EAST WOMENS REVIEW - SEMI FINALS DIVISION 1 Cranbourne’s season has come to an untimely and shock end after a painstaking two-point loss to Seaford at Shepley Oval on Sunday, 5.2(32) to 5.4(34). In a crunch clash against the Tigers, the third placed Eagles came into the match as favourites after beating their opponents twice throughout the home-andaway season by comfortable margins. The Tigers managed to kick two goals in the opening quarter to surge out to an eight-point lead into the wind. Despite having that advantage in the second term, the Eagles couldn’t quite capitalise, kicking just 2.0 to 1.1 to have a deficit of three-points at the major break. Seaford’s midfield got right on top in the third quarter to bring their margin out to 15-points, with the likes of Kelly O’Neill, Claire Weiss and Naomi Brisbane starting to dominate. With everything left to play for, the Eagles - inspired by Amanda McDonough (two goals) and the brilliance of Kayla Ripari in the middle, almost pinched victory after keeping the shell-shocked Tigers scoreless while kicking two goals themselves. It ends a largely positive season for the Eagles in the first season of Division 1, who ended with seven wins and six losses. In the other semi played at

Shepley, Eastern Devils were too strong for St Kilda Sharks, running out 28-point winners, 7.8(50) to 3.4(22). DIVISION 2 Endeavour Hills is one step closer to the maiden Division 2 premiership after qualifying for the grand final in their 26-point semi-final win over Mornington on Saturday, 7.1(43) to 2.5(17). After a scoreless opening term, the Eagles clicked into gear, kicking seven goals to one after quarter time to comfortably earn a week off. In the other match played on Sunday, Beaconsfield has stunned Chirnside Park to advance to a preliminary final, 3.4(22) to 4.5(29). The Cougars went in as favourites, but the Tigers had other ideas, playing a brilliant defensive game. Beaconsfield will play Mornington for a spot in the grand final this week at Shepley Oval. SOUTH EAST DEVELOPMENT Not even a strong performance from Warragul could stop the all-conquering Bass Coast, with the Colts falling short by 25-points at Shepley on Saturday, 8.5(53) to 4.4(28). Off the back of a five-goalhaul to Tayla Stahl-Smith - who has kicked 41 goals in just 13 matches - the Colts battled admirably and drew within a kick early in the last before the Coasters stamped their authority to book a grand final spot. The premiership dream is not over yet for Warragul, who will play Tyabb in a preliminary final on Sunday at Shepley.

Call out for more cricket umpires Dandenong District Cricket Umpires Association is again putting out a call for new umpires for the coming summer season. Umpires Association President Rory Ludowyk said it’s a great way for players who may have recently retired to stay involved in the game. And dads who enjoy umpiring their son’s junior games might want to step up and officiate at a higher level. The association offers training and ongoing guidance for new members, and there is good remuneration paid in all turf grades. “Our Umpires Association has great social facilities based at Shepley Oval in Dandenong, and it’s a really welcom-

ing group,“ Ludowyk said. Most matches are on Saturday afternoons with some Sunday fixtures as well. Own transport is a must as the competition covers the cities of Casey and Greater Dandenong and also spreads into Kingston and Cardinia. Although a senior competition, a Working with Children’s card is also required for the role. The Dandenong District Cricket Umpires Association is holding its annual “Rules for Rookies Night“ at Shepley Oval on Thursday 6 September starting at 7pm. Eagles’ finals dare By David Nagel Berwick and Cranbourne will battle for the first ticket to the South East Football Netball League grand final after the Eagles rolled arch-rival Narre Warren in Saturday’s qualifying final at Holm Park Reserve. Costly turnovers hampered the Eagles in the first half, but a brilliant second-half display - where they kept the most potent forward line in the competition to just three points - saw them waltz away with victory. Cranbourne coach Simon Goosey was a very proud man after the match, praising his side for its relentless pressure over four quarters. “I’m super proud of the boys, I think we’ve been building and building to something like this and finals football is all about pressure,” Goosey said. “You only play good sides in finals, so to keep a good side to no goals after half time was extremely pleasing. Shaun Marusic’s smother, Maxy (Gearon) did a tonne of work through the midfield and Cheekers (Ryan Davey) responded well after getting a bit of a bake at half time. I couldn’t be prouder of that effort.” The Magpies led by six points at half time, but the Eagles played inspired football in the second half, not allowing the Magpies any breathing space with a relentless brand of pressure perfectly suited to finals football. The Magpies began to turn over the footy, with players like Marusic, Mat Fletcher, Davey and Gearon providing a pacy forward line with ample supply of the ball. Zak Roscoe kicked two third-quarter goals, backed up by another to Luke BeeHugo, before two to Ryan Jones, and another to Marc Holt put the issue to bed in the final term. Roscoe finished with four for the Eagles, Jones three and Holt two,

while Brandon Osborne added another scalp to his outstanding collection by keeping Magpie sharpshooter Nick Scanlon to no goals. Aaron Wilson was dangerous early for the Magpies, kicking four, while Michael Collins and Jordyn Flannery were solid over four quarters. The Magpies will take on Beaconsfield in Sunday’s first semi-final at Berwick after Leigh McQuillen’s team ended Doveton’s season in the elimination final. The young Eagles - burdened by the loss of star ruckman Scott Meyer and emerging midfielder Connor Guley - frustrated Doveton in the first half, before unleashing three goals in three minutes at the start of the third to earn their advance. And it’s the third consecutive year that the Eagles have ended Doveton’s season at this juncture. Troy McDermott finished with four for the winners, Riley Verbi three and Lachie Modica two, while Michael Misso and Daniel Galante played starring roles through the midfield. Fill-in ruckman Jordy Roberts was brave and resilient against Russell Gabriel, who was still Doveton’s best performed player. Berwick coach Stewart Kemperman is confident his team will translate its all-conquering season into a silverware-winning September. “It’s a bit cliched, but I think we’ve continually got better as the season has unfolded, we’ve improved on a weekly basis and made some tweaks recently that I think will hold us in really good stead,” Kemperman said ahead of this week’s big clash. “I’ve also got confidence that the week’s rest will help us; it’s given us the opportunity to put some work into some players to try and have everyone hitting their straps at the precisely the right time.”

Doves downed in sweet revenge By David Nagel The old saying goes that a week is a long time in football - well we can add netball to that vernacular after Cranbourne produced a stunning turnaround against Doveton in Sunday’s elimination final at Berwick. Even on face value the Eagles 45-32 victory over the Doves was impressive, but when you take into consideration that Donna Wilson and her side were coming off a 28-47 loss to the Doves in round 18 - well it gives even more substance to the win. Sure the Doves were without their number-one strike weapon Rahni Samason, who was playing in a grand final for Heatherton, but Wilson was still circumspect taking a five-goal lead into the final quarter. “No matter who is on the court, Doveton is a very good side and they’ve done it to us before, coming from behind to beat us,” Wilson said. Cranbourne started impressively, opening up a 10-5 lead at the first break, with Alanah Hardy (goal attack) on fire and Tara Cecil (goal keeper) and Sharni Lambden (goal defence) proving tough nuts to crack in defence. The Eagles retained that five-goal lead until three-quarter time before opening up the turbo boosters with a 14-6 final term. Midcourters Nat Sparks (wing attack) and Darcy O’Donnell (wing defence) were amazing, but it was the impact of captain Steph Ryan (centre) that gave the Eagles the biggest boost heading in to the contest. The skipper was cleared to play by her physio on Thursday night, ending an agonising stint on the sidelines. “Steph has been injured for nine weeks and the plan was to always bring her back for this weekend,” Wilson said. “It’s hard to explain what she means to this

team, she’s the captain and having her back lifted the girls unbelievably. They’ve all been through the journey with Steph and the whole mentality changed with her back on the court. “She’s basically done nothing for the entire nine weeks, but she’s an incredibly fit person, and I’m not surprised by what she produced on the weekend. Having her back really switched the girls on.” Doveton should be proud of its efforts, with players like Shae Gee (GS), Chelsea Imanisani (GA), Hayley Stewart (C) and Liz Edwards (GK) working hard to narrow the gap in the second term. But this was Cranbourne’s day, who will head back to Berwick this Sunday for a cut-throat eliminator against Beaconsfield. Beacy will need to regroup after wasting a fast start against Tooradin in Saturday’s qualifying final at Holm Park Reserve. Beacy led by two goals at the first two breaks before the Seagulls well and truly clicked into gear, scoring 30-11 after half time to score a runaway 50-33 triumph. Beaconsfield’s great start emanated from the midcourt, with Briana Pratt (WA), Brit Tyers (WD) and Ash Gill (C) doing a great job in the absence of Rylee Nelson. But the Seagulls seized control and were a brilliant combination in the second half. Sara Duncan (C) and Emma Iacovou (WA) seemed to have the ball on a string, feeding Jess Cox (GA) and Alex Maher (GS) with some wonderful balls into the circle. The Seagulls turned a two-goal deficit into a five-goal lead at threequarter time before running away with a 17-5 final term. Kelly Andrews and her side now face the massive challenge of conquering Narre Warren who toyed with the Seagulls in round 18. Defenders

Cranbourne captain Steph Ryan was back in a familiar pose on Sunday, leading the Eagles to victory over Doveton. 172179 Pictures: ROB CAREW Jess Maher, Bec Kinna and Ebony Dolan will have a key role to play in trying to stop the Magpies advances when the second semi-final takes place at Pakenham on Saturday. We’ll go for the Magpies to progress to the grand final with a six-goal victory, and for Cranbourne to continue on its winning ways with a two-goal win over Beacy.
