TICKET TO ’SHORT’ SCREENING

How good would it be to be able to travel from the Sunshine Coast to Brisbane by train in 20 to 30 minutes? High-speed rail travel was put on the agenda this week by the State Government Opposition. It’s not rocket science. Plenty of countries including Europe and Japan have had high-speed rail for decades. For those who commute to work in the capital as I have done, it would be a great time saver. It would make it possible for more people to live at the coast and work in the city having the best of both worlds. Then there is the consideration of the cost of construction, and the increased visitors it may bring to the area. Last week at the Wallum Festival, there was discussion on the fight against developments hard won in order to retain the natural beauty and biodiversity the area had to offer. Margaret Maccoll

Manhattan Short is not a touring festival - rather, it is an instantaneous celebration that occurs simultaneously across the globe, bringing great films to great venues and allowing the audiences to select their favourites. If the Film Festival experience truly is about getting great works in front of as many eyes as possible, Manhattan Short offers the ultimate platform - one that sees its films screened in Sydney, Mumbai, Moscow, Kathmandu, Vienna, Cape Town to cinemas in all 50 states of the United States and beyond. Held at The J on Wednesday 4 October, at 7pm, this will be an evening film buffs must see. Tickets are $19 or $16 concession. To win a double pass to this special evening, simply email newsdesk@ noosatoday.com.au with your name and phone number. Winners will be contacted by Thursday 7 September.

THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT…

POLITICAL ROAD JAM BY MARGARET MACCOLL The upgrading of Beckmans Road, Noosaville, deemed “a matter of urgency” in the Noosa Traffic Study to 2036 has turned from a construction requirement into a political football. The study completed in January 2016 by Holland Traffic Consulting under Noosa Council contract recommends that the council pursue a duplication of the road by the State Government because “there is a Deed of Agreement in place for DTMR (Department of Transport and Main Roads) to undertake such works”. Last week with a State Government election looming, candidates were making claims on the funding of the road which in carrying about 19,000 cars a day is considered by the study to have reached capacity.

And last Friday a 12-year-old boy was hit by a car while trying to cross the road. Noosa MP Glen Elmes said with no money in the government budget for the project “the only way for it to be built is for it to be a political decision”. Parents taking their children to school at Noosaville State School on Beckmans Road last week had mixed reactions to the road ranging from great concern to indifference. “It’s ridiculous. People don’t slow down to 40km/h. I’ve been concerned about it for a couple of years,” parent Rachel Lutherborrow said. Ros Stothart agreed “it was an issue” but doesn’t regard it as dangerous. Several parents including Fiona Whitmore said they considered it too dangerous for their children to ride or walk to school along. “It’s quite impossible to walk across the road at school (pickup and drop off) times,” Heidi Madeheim said. “Sometimes if there are no parks you have to park across the road.” Kel Burn disagreed about it being dangerous but said “you get so much traffic at a certain time accidents can happen”. Another parent, who didn’t want to be named, said in comparison to her home city of Melbourne it wasn’t “a big deal but was less than ideal. The upgrade is well overdue”. With new houses being built in the area the traffic is expected to increase. ●

BOY SEVERLY INJURED IN ACCIDENT A boy is on the mend after suffering a fractured skull and severe concussion after he was in collision with a vehicle on Beckmans Road. Police said the 12-year-old and his sister were walking their dog when they decided to cross the road about noon on Friday. He was airlifted to Brisbane’s Lady Cilento Hospital with serious head injuries and placed in an intensive care unit and put on a ventilator. On Monday the boy was breathing on his own and with his condition improving doctors were considering moving him from the intensive care unit to a hospital ward. The boy’s sister was not injured in the accident. ●

PRE-ELECTION TENSIONS AIRED: RIVAL PARTIES TRADING BARBS BY MARGARET MACCOLL The Queensland State Election is yet to be announced, but both Noosa LNP and Labor candidates are on the warpath blaming their rival parties for issues raised as needing attention in the electorate. Sitting LNP MP Glen Elmes said Labor should be upgrading Beckmans Road, have

Noosa TAFE buildings “brimming with new life and purpose” and have secured the future for the Noosa Hospital. “The Labor Party’s track record on delivering for the communities of the Sunshine Coast is appalling and cannot be denied. Next year, Labor will have been in power for the past two decades, (with the

exception of two years and nine months) and we still don’t have the basics,” Mr Elmes said. Labor candidate Mark Denham said when LNP was in power under Premier Campbell Newman it “slashed local funds to Noosa Hospital” and closed the TAFE, “then wanted to sell it off ”.

“(Mr Elmes) has been promising this upgrade (the Beckmans Road) for 14 years, even before he was elected and still there is nothing,” Mr Denham said. Elections have been widely tipped to take place in November 2017, but the government could call the election any time before 5 May 2018. ●

NOOSA TODAY 3

COVER STORY BY RON LANE

D

espite some people being surprised and even shocked, it is really nothing new, women have been fighting for centuries; ever since way back in 58AD when a swinging Pommie chick named Boudicca climbed on to her trusty chariot and went headhunting Romans. But as I sat and talked with Ella Boot, this very attractive 17-year-old young lady with long blond hair and a quite pleasant smile, I still found it hard to believe that she was indeed the newly-crowned amateur boxing champion on the Youth Commonwealth Games; Bahamas July 2017. Mark Evans, her coach and mentor at the Cooroy Amateur Impact Boxing Academy, calls her the Smiling Assassin.

However, during the three years that she was to be a part of the Nippers, she had occasion to go along to the Noosaville Budokan Karate club with a friend; this is what can only be described as the start of a total love affair with the combat sports of karate and boxing. After several years of hard training and discipline, she had been up-graded to Black Belt 2nd Dan. In competition she was also successful winning three Queensland titles, two National as well as two National bronze medals. Then of course there was the travel. “While attending karate tournaments I had the opportunity to travel all over Australia; learning all about the country and competing that was great. When I started my boxing career the karate training definitely gave me a head start,” Ella said.

Once the decision to change to amateur boxing was made, she joined coach Mark Evans at the Cooroy Impact Boxing Academy and very quickly fitted in. “I could see right from the start that she was a very determined young lady,” Evans said, “but as to be expected it took some six months to adjust her footwork, punching and most important her balance.” At the end of this time she was allowed to compete in her first tournament; she won - and this was the start of big things to come. “I was very worried because she was a girl,” her mother said. “I knew she was very tough but most important, it was what she wanted to do. However the first time as a parent you really feel it.” In a short period of time she won her first title that of Queensland Novice Champion.

ELLA’S THE

’SMILING ASSASSIN’ With a record of 22 fights for 21 wins, the nickname is I think, quite appropriate. “I have always believed that girls should be allowed to do what they want. And not only that, we should also receive the same opportunities. Just look at what Rugby 7s has done for women’s contact sport.” This was the answer she gave when I asked the obvious question, “Why boxing?” Born in Essex, she had her first introduction to the world of sport when at three years of age her parents took her to a local gym, where she started in gymnastics. “Turned out she was extremely flexible,” her mother Michelle said. “But most important of all it was a very friendly gym, so despite her age she started learning to mix with other children.” Ella was just seven when her family migrated to Australia and settled in Cooroibah. Once settled they enrolled Ella in the Noosa Nippers as an Under 8. ‘ “We wanted her doing something that was typically Australian and at the same time give her the opportunity to start learning some of the Aussie traditions,” her father Jeff said. “What could be more typical than the Nippers in a lifesaving club?”

“At the Dojo I learnt to accept discipline and to meditate; in competition the meditation taught me to clear my mind and concentrate on the bouts that lay ahead. It is the same principal in boxing; a clear mind and the ability to focus on what my coach Mark Evans tells me.” After her years in karate, Ella started to feel she needed a change. Also, she had started to think about boxing. Regarding her time at the Budokan her Sensei (teacher) Rick Hislop said, “Despite her youth she really had it here (tapping his head with his fingers) she was incredibly tough and her concentration was unreal.” “Deciding to step away from the Budokan I took a break. Because I was getting interested in boxing my dad used to take me out in the backyard to show me some of the basic differences between karate and boxing.” “If she was going to change,’’ Jeff said, “I wanted her to understand that things were different in boxing. In karate the stance is wider, the hands are lower and the punch is different. However I emphasised that there were two very important things that were the same - focus and discipline. “If she could accept that then well and good. I had some gear so we started to do some basic punching and it went from there.”

By January of this year, with a string of titles to her credit and an undefeated record, she was picked in an Australian Podium Team for a two week development training camp in the Philippines. Then in June, along with clubmate Chloe Halley, she was chosen for a three-week tour of the UK and Hungary as a member of the Boxing Australia Future Team (Female). On this tour she had three fights for three wins - all against National Champions. In the UK she won both the Hull and Haringey Cups and crossed over to Europe where she won the Wild Cats Hungarian Tournament. Two of these three wins were by TKO. On returning home she fought for the ultimate, the right to represent her country at the July Youth Commonwealth Games in the Bahamas; she won and this gave her the biggest thrill of all, the rite to wear her country’s colours. “Oh to wear those colours at the Commonwealth Games was the biggest thrill ever. This was really something; we had great coaches - Kevin Smith - head coach, Shara Romer - female coach and Kel Bryant. I owe those people so much.”

“I HAVE ALWAYS BELIEVED THAT GIRLS SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO DO WHAT THEY WANT…” Her next major tournament will be the Female Youth World Championships. These will be held in Doha India in November and will indeed be tough on the family as they are self-funded. “Fighting for Australia in the World titles, it would be good if a sponsorship deal came available,” her father said. Now eighteen months into her boxing career her life is definitely full on. Her day starts with morning road work, then off to school as a student in Year 12 at Sunshine Beach High, then five nights it’s into the gym. Also having finished her Certificate 3 in Fitness, she has now moved on to Certificate 4. Despite all this she still manages to fit in a part-time job in a coffee lounge. With great family support anything is possible. What lies ahead after the boxing career I asked? “Who knows - however I can always go back into Martial Arts - that’s something I could spend a lifetime perfecting.” “Regarding her future,” her mother said, “Ella is not one to sit back and wait for handouts; she has set up her own website and for those wishing to know her better she is contactable on sportsbrand.com.au. Like all young girls she likes making new friends.” Despite her success at local, national and international level, this young lady is still relatively unknown within the shire of Noosa. However with continued good coaching, family support and management, there should be no reason for this well-mannered young athlete to remain unknown. ●

ROSSES ON ROLL OF HONOUR

MAKERSPACE IN PIPELINE Cooroy is set to gain its own makerspace. Noosa Library Service won a grant to fund and develop its own makerspace within Cooroy Library. The traditional training room will be re-designed into the makerspace and will include areas for making, learning and socialising. “The makerspace will be a place where people can gather and share ideas and use emerging technologies to explore, tinker, invent and discover, and through this exploration new ideas and new ways of thinking will emerge,” says Literacy and Learning co-ordinator Tracey King. The makerspace, developed in partnership with local tech groups, will be established over the coming months. The library hopes to open it to the public in early 2018. ●

ART INSPIRES ACTION ON PLASTICS

Local artists Pam Walpole and Yanni Van Zijl have installed an artwork ‘Australis

BY MARGARET MACCOLL

Artwork spreads its anti-plastic message. Plasticus’ under and around the Coolum Surf lifeguard tower. It is a morphed marine species from Noosa with tentacles up to 10 metres long, who has come ashore in Coolum and wound itself among the tower and Pandanus, to be part of this year’s Horizon Festival. We all know how plastic in our oceans is swallowed by marine life and sea birds, which leads to an early death. Pam and Yanni - (Art forARTsake) hope their art will encourage discussion about these environmental issues and inspire change. Pop along and have a look and read the jaunty poem that accompanies the creature until 3 September. ●

Olive Donaldson’s uncle Ben Ross was shot through both thighs during the Battle of Passchendaele in 1917 in World War I. Olive, a former Noosa Councillor said Ben lay in no man’s land for two days before the Germans picked him up and took him to hospital. In 1918, he was repatriated, and her father Bill Ross joined up. When Bill came back, the brothers rounded up the returned soldiers and formed the Tewantin RSSILA (today’s RSL). It was well positioned between two hotels, Olive said. Bill Ross and Ben Ross are named on the Shire of Noosa Roll of Honour among 344 names of local men who enlisted in WWI. The monument, one of 11 statues and memorials built in towns across the shire, is included in a new book which documents the history of Noosa’s WWI memorials and pays tribute to the community’s efforts to create them. Noosa Remembers: a history of the World War I memorials of Noosa Shire is the work of Noosa Library Service heritage librarian Jane Harding and researcher Joe Hextall. The memorials include halls, cenotaphs, honour boards across towns in the shire and includes the Pomona rotunda. Some memorials including a memorial

bath on Tewantin’s river bank, a memorial avenue of trees in Pomona and a memorial hall in Tewantin no longer exist. Joe said the book looked at what the memorials meant to the people and why they wanted to create them for the community. At the time, there were only about 4500 people living in the area. “The money raised from 1914 until the 1930s for the memorials was quite amazing,” he said. “People wanted something, but didn’t necessarily agree on what shape that should come in.” Looking at newspaper clippings and council minutes they found towns competed against each other for the best monuments. Some wanted halls that would be useful for returned soldiers, their families and the wider community, but others thought they would need too much maintenance. What struck him most was the expense incurred to honour those who served in the war and to serve as a reminder of the enormous effect the war had on the community. Noosa Remembers will be launched at a public event at the Pomona Rotunda, Joe Bazzo Park, Pomona, at 10.30am on 8 September which marks the 100-year anniversary of the unveiling of the Noosa Shire Roll of Honour. ●

NEWS THE GO-TO PLACE FOR AUTISM ADVICE The Autism Treehouse is one of seven Noosa organisations to receive a Gambling Community Benefit Fund grant. The Autism Treehouse will use its State Government grant of almost $9000 to rebrand its organisation to better define its purpose to be a go-to resource for people wanting information on autism. Previously called The Treehouse Initiative, the organisation was established in 2013 by Claire Gilmour following the autism diagnosis of her son Cooper and her own need to source information. “There was no one organisation to go to - to find out what resources are available,” she said. The organisation operates online with participants from Noosa to Caloundra but hopes with future funding to obtain its own premises from which to base itself. “It would be somewhere to go to when your child has been diagnosed. We’d have resources, brochures, someone to talk to, someone who understands, who has been through it,” she said. They currently host workshops with expert speakers, parents’ get-togethers, children’s activities and an annual Christmas party attended by 700-800 people. Other organisations to receive grants were: · Cooroy Memorial Hall Association - $32,140. · Noosa District Softball Association $33,494.55. · Noosa Model Flyers - $7500. · Noosa Tennis Club - $32,790. · Noosa Trailblazers Mountain Bike Club $35,000. · Cooroy Horse and Pony Club - $4560. Applications for the next round of funding close on 31 August.

The Queensland Koala Crusaders are hosting a crowdfunding campaign to plant 10,000 koala food trees in Noosa Shire over the next year to aid the survival of the area’s remaining koalas and future populations. The group aims to raise $30,000 toward the cost of planting and hopes to achieve a quarter of the amount during the launch of the campaign at a DoodleJam event on Tuesday 5 September. QKC president Meghan Halverson said it was an opportunity for the Noosa community to show it cared about doing something valuable for future generations while we still have some koalas in this region. “Our ultimate goal is to help create protected areas and connecting corridors that provide sanctuary and allow the koala to thrive and regenerate - areas that would also help maintain the quality of the air we breathe and the water we drink - and support the 1000plus plants and animals that live in the forests under the wild koala,” she said. The event begins with a passionate presentation to explain the reasons why wild koalas need your support, followed by refreshments and the opportunity to mingle with lots of interesting people. Local talented artists including the Kitty Kats will perform and guests will be invited to participate in a fun, collaborative, community painting experience hosted by DoodleJam. The event to be held at Noosa Arts Cafe, 205 Weyba Road, Noosaville, from 5pm, is restricted to just 160 attendees. For more information phone Meghan on 0449 255 989. ●

THE LOWDOWN THREE … Things to do while the surf is flat

It feels like summer is coming here in Noosa. There’s just one thing missing - waves. Waiting for a rideable summer swell to come through can feel endless, but here are a few things you can do with that newfound spare time that still involve the ocean and surfing at some degree.

1

Snorkel - at the right time of tides, the water clarity is near perfect. When the oceans are flat, there’s a good chance it’s decent snorkelling conditions, so grab a mask, snorkel and fins and get submerged. It’s a whole new perspective.

2

Teach someone else to surf - It’s hard to teach someone to surf when the waves are good. You’re stuck standing next to a Wavestorm pushing your pal into waves while everyone else is scoring, but on a small day you’ve got nothing to lose. Be selfless and share the gift of surfing with that friend who has been asking you to teach them for months.

WORD ON THE STREET Noosa Today asked people if they had an opinion on marriage equality in a street poll conducted on Gympie Terrace, Noosaville, on Monday 28 August. “I think people should be able to marry who they want to marry.” - Wil Tovey “I think it’s a great idea. I’ll definitely be voting for it.” - Sharon Dell

“I’m all for it.” - Jean of Noosaville “I have a gay partner and I come from Surrey Hills. Yes, I agree with it.” - Justin Avery “I think there should be equal legal rights across the board but I don’t think a union between two men and two women should be called marriage.” - Liz who refused to be photographed ●

Q&A

Charmaine Steer

Worlds apart, Eumundi and Melbourne? They sure are! I was tired of the ratrace and had always wanted to be on the Sunshine Coast. My family are from the Coast and after 10 years working in Melbourne, I was ready to move back home. Do you miss anything from Melbourne? Of course my friends, but I have old friends up here and I will go back from time to time. The shopping is the best you can get everything and anything in Melbourne.

What do you think of our winter? Ah ... what winter? True. Are you a beach girl? At heart, yes. I got really into the urban life in Melbourne, shopping, cafes, going out ... but I’m in love with Noosa and the Hinterland. There’s lots to do if you hunt around and then there’s the beach. What are you addicted to watching right now? Girl Boss on Netflix. Sitting tight for the next season is agony. What’s on your CD player at the moment? Adele.

Charmaine has lived in Eumundi for the last year after relocating from busy Melbourne and has never looked back.

Skateboard - In case you’ve been under a rock, there’s a new board in town and it’s supposed to be the next best thing to surfing. It’s the SmoothStar. Touting themselves as the number one best surf trainer, voted by the best surf coaches all over the world, this is a killer core workout and cheaper than surfing. Check out the new Ripcurl shop in Noosaville - they stock SmoothStars. Google what the board can do and get cracking.

IT’S NONE OF OUR BUSINESS BUT … BINS DELIVERED - LIKE IT OR NOT The delivery of green waste bins by Noosa Council last week created plenty of Facebook chatter both for and against its introduction. Most of the talk focused on residents’ inability to reject the green bin service if desired. Resident Bart Jenner said he applied unsuccessfully for an exemption to the green because he has no use for it. “I was rejected because I don’t have a gardener and my land size is over 400 square metres,” he said. Bart said he composted everything, leaving him with no green waste. Kathya Hirt is also a composter, never putting green waste in her bins but said she burnt some palm fronds that didn’t fit in the bin and was criticised for it by other Facebook followers. “Burning your garden clippings is not environmentally friendly,” Jacqui Clarke said. “Better they are recycled through council as mulch.” Some on the Noosa Community Noticeboard Facebook site said they would prefer to have a second yellow bin or a weekly yellow recycle bin collection. Resident Bill Ridderhof praised those who composted garden and kitchen waste but questioned the requirement for a service for non-users. “It’s so great that some people are able to compost all of their garden pruning and organic kitchen waste. The rest of us should be like you,” he said. “Compost made correctly will not spread weeds as seeds are killed by the high temperatures that the compost reaches. “As ratepayers we shouldn’t have to pay for a service we don’t use so let’s bring this to council's attention and see if people who show that they use all organic waste on their property, don’t have to pay for another service.” But Judy Barrass disagreed, saying some people have worm farms or compost bins but you have to

the right thing in the first place? Is a big green plastic bin and diesel truck service better for the environment than a nice quiet productive compost bin?” According to the Noosa Council website, residents who live in single houses and duplexes in urban areas will automatically receive a garden waste recycling bin but they are optional for commercial, industrial and other premises. Rural properties, units and properties less than 400 square metres are automaticall exempt. People who have all garden waste removed by a professional gardener for recycling may be exempt if they meet the criteria and complete an Application for Garden Waste Bin Exemption form. ●

THE JOY OF TOUCH

admit for the vast majority and for the environment this is good policy. “Should I ask council to give me a discount or something because they are overservicing? Government at all levels has to make policy for the majority not the minority,” she said. “I don’t use bike lanes, sports fields, aquatic centres, libraries, playgrounds, hinterland roads or holiday buses. Should I get a part refund of my rates?” However Bart Jenner feels penalised for using good environmental practices. “Why should we not have a choice if we are doing

Can feelings of joy and happiness with a light touch to certain areas of the head? According to organisation Access Consciousness it can. The group describes a set of 32 points on the head as Access Bars which when lightly touched stimulate “a range of positive effects, including greater mental clarity, increased motivation, a significant increase in joy and happiness and fewer signs of anxiety and depression”. The treatment has been supported on YouTube video by neuroscientist Jeffery Fannin who tested the neurological effects of the treatment by measuring brain waves of people before and after a Bars session and found it had “a positive neurological effect similar to that experienced by advanced meditators”. On RUOK Day on 14 September an Access Bars facilitator Lauren Marie will hold free Bars sessions for people wanting to try out the energy treatment. The session will be held at the Ivory Palms Resort, 73 Hilton Terrace, Noosaville, from 6.30pm-9.30pm. NEW TWIST ON LEVEL PLAYING FIELD Turning the concept of inclusion on its head was the aim of a new University of the Sunshine Coast program that invites able-bodied individuals to try their hands at wheelchair basketball. Run in conjunction with the Suncoast Spinners, the innovative Reverse Inclusion program will offer dozens of workshops and lectures over the course of a year to university students, school students and members of the public. The program run by USC researcher and Paralympic wheelchair basketball medallist Bridie Kean was launched last week during the university’s Diversity Week. “People with physical disabilities are

often excluded from participating in typical team sports, whereas everyone including the able-bodied - can have a go at wheelchair basketball,” she said. “In these workshops, the wheelchair is simply a piece of sporting equipment to play the game. “Through reverse inclusion we are creating an environment where no-one is left on the sidelines, and siblings, friends and workmates can play sport together.” Coaches and athletes from the Suncoast Spinners will help lead the workshops, including USC student and Australian wheelchair basketball representative Steven Elliott and Hannah Dodd. ●

Teeland Architects, Little Cove.

Robinson Architects, Pomona. Architectural design in Noosa will once again be the centre of widespread attention this coming weekend when the Australian Architecture Association (AAA) focuses on quality contemporary residential building in the shire. “The association promotes an understanding and appreciation of the value of modern architecture,” Noosa councillor Ingrid Jackson said. “As a supporter, appreciator and advocate for local architecture, I’ve been participating in its Noosa tours since they started in 2011,” she said. “The tour attracts architects and aficionados from

across Australia to view the latest developments in Noosa and Sunshine Coast regional architecture. “Each time it is a delightful weekend of visits to new and renovated houses where the architects tell what underpinned the design, how it was developed to marry with the environment, and what issues were encountered in construction. “This year’s Noosa hosts are Lindy and Stephen Guthrie of Bark Design Architects, Joylon Robinson of Robinson Architects, David Teeland of Teeland Architects, and Dan Sparks of Sparks Architects.” Another event for architect enthusiasts to mark in their diaries is the inaugural Sunshine Coast Open

DANGEROUS DRIVING

ROAD SAFETY WEEK

A 19-year-old man was arrested in Sunshine Beach on Sunday after police received multiple calls about his dangerous manner of driving. The man was reported driving towards oncoming traffic and colliding with traffic bollards at Peregian Springs before heading northbound on the wrong side of the David Low Way. Police located the man in Solway Drive, Sunshine Beach, where he got out of the car and tried to run off. The empty vehicle he left rolled backwards and damaged traffic lights. The man struggled with police before being restrained and transported to the local watchhouse. He has been charged with dangerous driving while adversely affected by drugs, obstructing police and driving while under the influence of a drug. ●

Last week was Road Safety Week and a busy time for all Queensland police on the road. Unfortunately people still continue to take a chance and drive under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. There were seven drink-drivers this week in Noosa with the highest reading being from a South Australian tourist returning a reading of 0.206 per cent. On top of this three drug-drivers were detected. ●

BIKE RIDER HIT BY CAR On Friday afternoon a 37-year-old bike rider was hit by a car in Selkirk Drive. His injuries were not serious but he was transported to Nambour Hospital as a precaution. ●

SWIMMERS TARGETED BY THIEVES As the weather heats up, so are the thefts from our beaches. Thieves are targeting swimmers who take a swim and leave their belongings unattended on the beach. Noosa Main Beach had three thefts while the Sunshine Beach stretch had two this week. Police suggest you only take what you need for a beach visit. Electrical equipment such as iPads and lap-tops, passports and large amounts of cash are not really needed when visiting the beach and should be left at home or secured elsewhere. It’s also advisable to think about your ‘spot’ on the beach, avoid being close to or next to pathways as this gives the thief an opportunity for a quick getaway. ●

COAST FESTIVAL MAKES GREEN STATEMENT BY MARGARET MACCOLL The Noosa Wallum Festival held over the weekend was hailed a great success. Presented by Noosa Integrated Catchment Association (NICA) and funded by Noosa Council, the festival brought together a range of guest speakers on topics affecting the wallum country or ecosystem of coastal south-east Queensland. Organised by a working committee led by Stephanie Haslam, the festival covered a range of topics from geology and research to

art and landscape architecture. On Sunday, Vivien Griffin spoke about a 40-year-fight from 1961 to 2001 by environmentalists against developments to obtain and conserve the 3000 hectares of wallum that make up the Noosa National Park. In 1962 it was only 835 acres of landlocked park, she said. In 1986 Dr Arthur Harold, a medical doctor and active conservationist, proposed a permanent continuous green belt from Noosa National Park to Peregian

Environment Park at Coolum. “That was eventually achieved, but we should never take that for granted,” Vivien said. Development proposals fought off over the four decades included ones for a motorway through the middle of the national park, a residential and retail development on Marcus high dunes and a space park. The Peregian Space Park proposal, nicknamed The Big Rocket, included a

100-acre theme park, with life size shuttle, restaurants, residences and shops over a 420-acre property. Vivien said there were 1400 objections to the proposal and protest marches in the streets over what became known as the battle for emu swamp. “Righteousness prevailed, and government agreed to buy the land and put it into permanent protection in 1993,” she said. Stephanie said the talks from the festival would be put together in a book. ●

QUALITY BEERS ON TAP BY HOLLIE HARRIS Attention beer lovers! The much-anticipated Eumundi Brewery at the iconic Imperial Hotel Eumundi will officially reopen on Friday 25 August, with the new beers available on tap. The beers will be available at many great pubs and clubs across the Sunshine Coast from the long weekend in late September. Brewed on site in the home of the original Eumundi Brewery, the new Eumundi Brewery’s first beers are a reinvented Eumundi Brewery Lager and a mid-strength Eumundi Brewery Pale Ale. Lion’s master brewer Chuck Hahn has steered the Eumundi Brewery project along with Head Brewer Chris Sheehan. Both brewers are excited to see the revival of a much-loved local craft beer for Queensland. “Eumundi is unquestionably an artisan village, and we’re thrilled to add our own craft to the mix - in the form of a great range of flavoursome craft beers,” Chuck said. “These are beers that will be appreciated by locals, as well as the many visitors who flock to Eumundi, and indeed the Sunshine Coast. Our beers are brewed to international standards, but with loads of local input.” Head brewer Chris Sheehan said this was just the beginning for the Eumundi Brewery. “Our first Eumundi Brewery lager brew and pale ale brew came out right where we wanted them to, and we’re excited to share them. We’ll now start looking at our first seasonal beer a Ginger Pale Ale, which should be a heap of fun partnering with local ginger growers,” Chris said.

Manager of the Imperial Hotel Paul Thomas said it was exciting to be partnering with Lion to bring back a truly local beer to Eumundi and the Sunshine Coast region and to be able to share an authentic brewing experience with visitors. “Visitors to the hotel can watch the brewers at work and see where the brewing takes place through big glass windows,” Paul said. “From October, we’ll be offering Brewery Tours so people can learn more about the brewing process and our flavoursome yet very drinkable beers.” ●

KIDS AND PARENTS IN FESTIVE MOOD The sun shone as did the smiles from the very beginning of the Pengari Children’s Festival last weekend. To kick things off, teachers sang for the crowd, highlighting the harmonious faculty. One parent, Arzu Cleary summed it up best by saying, “It was amazing to see the school come together in a celebration all we share”. More than 3500 people enjoyed the wide

variety of spaces, activities and delicious food. From the quiet and relaxing cake house and tea cosy, listening to a range of garden talks and inspiring stories, to the afternoon grooves provided by local bands Thump and Annie J and Fusion. Some hung out in the Chai Cafe and were entertained by students performing in an open mic format, while others wandered

through the beautiful grounds, following as their children found even more wondrous yet simple activities to enjoy. Noosa Pengari Steiner School prides itself on providing an example of connected community in action and the festival aimed to provide an opportunity for guest to experience the harmony and beauty created by Steiner education. ●

NOTHING TO LAUGH ABOUT

LENSCAPE

The premise by Case Smit that low income families are being disconnected from the electricity grid because of a future shift from coal fired power stations to cleaner renewable energy is laughable. One way to bring prices down would be to renationalise Australia’s electricity grid. Many well-informed people have written to this paper giving facts and figures about why man is contributing to climate change and why renewable energy is the way of the future, but Mr Smit and others keep trotting out the same old tired arguments praising coal. I am not sure who they are trying to convince. Certainly not all those people who were at the Eumundi School of Arts hall who listened to learned people like John Sinclair, Professor Jon Brodie and Dr Tanzi Smith talk about the perils of having a coal mine on our doorstep. If the New Hope Colton coal mine goes ahead, then millions of litres of untreated mine discharge will flow into the Great Sandy Strait, and I don’t think there would be too many people in the Noosa Shire who think that would be a good idea. Bruce Hallett, Tewantin.

THEY’VE GOT IT COVERED Some of you may know, council-funded professional lifeguards already provide the bulk of services on our beaches, seven days a week from May to September holidays and five days a week from September to May. Noosa Heads Surf Club provides lifeguard services on Peregian Beach one day on weekends from September to May and pays for a lifeguard to do the other day on the weekend during this period. While we’re grateful for all Noosa Heads Surf Club has done for the Peregian Club, if they choose to withdraw, Surf Lifesaving Queensland has committed to covering the weekends during the summer months and taking over the lease on the surf club. There would be no need for extra patrols by council-funded professional lifeguards nor any extra cost to ratepayers should NHSLC withdraw. Frank Wilkie, Deputy Mayor, Noosa Council.

‘GLAMPING’ WILL BE ROUGH The transfer of the Elanda Point lease represents for many of us a dramatic step back for conservation and affordable camping and

Club Med in a sacred nature reserve, designed to increase the existing stress on a fragile environment. Mr Batty’s bland assurance that he intends to maintain the current prevailing purpose of Elanda, an affordable, low-key camping and environmental education facility, fall on deaf ears, given his own admissions in his original submission to council.

He fails to mention his company’s admitted damage to the environment of the Noosa River, caused by the wash and fuel emissions from the current Discovery Tours highspeed vessels. Nor does he refer to his expressed wish in that submission to control 100 per cent of commercial access to the fragile Cooloola region. How can we trust Mr Batty to safeguard what is so precious to many of us when his application to downgrade a vital fish habitat at Elanda in order to construct a 70-metre jetty to service his Everglades tours is after more than four months deliberation still awaiting the decision of Dr Steven Miles, the Minister for National Parks. Does Mr Batty know something we don’t? Perhaps the report that he has relinquished

the lease on his current jetty at Noosaville has some bearing on the matter. It seems that Discovery Tours buses and other vehicles are already accessing Elanda via Lake Flat Road, according to local users. While we have no reason to assume that this increased commercial traffic is responsible for the tragedy, we learn that a mother swamp wallaby with a surviving baby was discovered dead on the Elanda Point road last week, one thing is certain: any increase in high-speed or heavy vehicle traffic in this quiet natural habitat can only increase the risk of more needless slaughter, unless measures are taken to reduce speeds and increase drivers’ awareness of wildlife. Noel Bird, Boreen Point.

A WATCHFUL EYE ON INFANTS Families with babies born in April and May are being asked about their infants sleep routines for one of the largest studies in Queensland into sudden and unexpected infant deaths. Researchers at the University of the Sunshine Coast are sending surveys to parents as part of the study led by USC Professor of Nursing Jeanine Young who said despite public health campaigns Queensland had one of the highest rates in Australia of unexplained infant death. “By better understanding how parents use advice and public health recommendations to care for their babies, we hope to reduce the rate of fatal sleeping accidents and sudden infant deaths,” she said.

Thursday, 31 August, 2017

“The Infant Care Awareness and Routines Evaluation Among Queenslanders study is the first of this kind in 15 years, and is supported as a priority by the State Coroner and Red Nose, formerly SIDS and Kids.” PhD candidate and paediatric clinical nurse Roni Cole said the findings would be used to shape future public health campaigns and safe sleeping messages. “Each week, around two babies under the age of 12 months die suddenly and unexpectedly in Australia,” she said. “Previous research clearly demonstrates that some infant care practices are associated with increased risk of babies dying; while others may protect babies.” For more information email Roni Cole at roni.cole@research.usc.edu.au ●

MORE THAN YOU BARGAINED FOR WHEN IT’S ALL RELATIVE YOU’VE got an investment property that needs a tenant and you’ve got a second cousin in need of a property - seems like a perfect fit, right? Renting a property to a family member can seem like a good idea on the surface but there are some issues that need deeper consideration before you jump in and significantly alter the relationship from a simple familial relationship to a more complicated one that involves financial considerations. Top five tips if you’re considering renting your investment property to a family member: Be prepared Before you go ahead with the tenancy, make a plan for how you want to handle things if they go wrong. What instructions will you give your property manager on delinquent rent or damage to the property? How will you manage the relationship if it deteriorates and how will you manage the relatives in common if they choose to speak up on your tenant’s behalf? Lease Make sure you have a written lease agreement, just as you would any other tenant. A verbal agreement between cousins who grew up together sounds simple and hassle-free. However, rental agreements spell out all the conditions so both parties are aware of the details of the agreement. Don’t risk any misunderstanding down the track. Make sure your cousin knows what is required when they agree to the rental.

Property manager Have someone do all the nitty gritty stuff, such as receiving rent, carrying out quarterly inspections, and organising maintenance for the property. This removes you from the face-toface transaction and helps you keep your family relationship intact. We also recommend that the property manager carries out a standard tenancy check so that you are presented with all the facts about the potential tenant before you sign the agreement. Keep things professional When things get tricky, it can be tempting to use your inside knowledge of the tenant to appeal to a common relative, such as Grandma or Aunt Melissa. Don’t. This is where danger lies. Let your property manager handle it, just as they would any other tenant. This is why you pay a professional to manage the property on your behalf. Remember, tenants have rights Your tenant has the right to privacy, so don’t think you can drop in unannounced to have a sneaky peek at how well they’re maintaining the property. If you’re invited over for a family event, great. If not, it’s best to keep your distance. Renting to a family member can be a tricky situation but with some careful planning it can work. Just be prepared and know what your contingency plans are before you begin and you’ll be fine. ●

AIRBNB’S popularity continues to grow and the opportunity to make some extra cash is appealing to many, whether they are home owners or renters, which leads to the question - can a tenant legally sub-lease part or all of their rented property on AirBnB? And if so, under what circumstances can they do it? When a tenant arranges to rent out part or all of a property they are renting this is called a sub-lease or sub-letting. The legislation The Act that governs rental accommodation in Queensland is the Residential Tenancies and Rooming Accommodation Act 2008. If a tenant wants to sub-let the property they are renting, they must seek written permission from the landlord, usually via the property manager. The Act states that the lessor/ agent must not unreasonably refuse permission to sub-let or transfer the agreement from one person to another. What does this mean? Well, according to the Act it means the lessor must act reasonably in failing to agree to consent to sublet, and will be taken to be acting unreasonably if they behave in a “capricious or retaliatory way” in failing to agree to the sub-let. Like most things in life, it’s probably down to the tenant and the landlord having a good, mutually respectful relationship. If the tenant has proven trustworthy, reliable and to have taken good care of the property then the landlord may be more likely to grant this request.

Landlords are likely to value good tenants who maintain the property and protect its value. It’s important to understand that this sub-lease does not remove the original tenant’s responsibility for the property. So, for example, if Jane is renting a property from Bob and she’s going away for a fortnight, she may ask Bob if she can put it on AirBnB for the fortnight she’s away. If Bob says yes, Jane is still responsible for the property, even while she is away, so if the property is damaged by the AirBnB visitors (the sub-tenants), subject to any other agreement Jane and Bob may have in respect of this arrangement, Bob will still likely have recourse against Jane under their lease agreement in respect of that damage. If Bob says no, then Jane doesn’t have permission to sub-let the property. If Jane believes Bob has acted unreasonably in failing to agree to a sub-let arrangement then Jane can apply to a tribunal to obtain a determination. However, this is extremely rare. In the REIQ’s view, a landlord is more likely to say yes to a sub-lease arrangement that is a longer-term arrangement and where the normal checks and balances are in place, such as the normal vetting of the potential sub-let tenant. With AirBnB those checks and balances are not in place and this may, understandably, make some landlords nervous because they have no idea who is residing in their property. ● Source - REIQ

IT’S FRIDAY FOR SETTLEMENT OF THE DEAL risk minimisation strategy you may want to consider changing the locks. REIQ Top 5 Settlement Tips: · Hiccups: The number-one reason that it’s a good idea to schedule settlement early is to build in some time to manage any hiccups that can arise in the leadup to settlement and still achieve the same move-in date on the Saturday. There is a broad range of reasons why settlement may not take place as scheduled, with the most common being human error or simple postal delays. In fact, some research suggests up to 20 per cent of settlements don’t occur on the scheduled day due to an error

on the forms - a signature is missing, someone’s name is misspelled, or some other detail is incorrect. · Cheaper removalists: Another excellent reason you may want to schedule your settlement on Monday to Wednesday and potentially move during the week is that often removalists will charge cheaper fees. Saturday and Sunday are the biggest days for movers, so they tend to use premium pricing structures. · Pre-settlement inspection: Prior to settlement is scheduled to take place it is a good idea for the buyer to conduct a pre-settlement inspection. If the contract doesn’t contain a pre-inspection term, then it’s a good idea to request it. This will allow you to ensure everything in the property is as described in the contract. If there is an issue, having the presettlement inspection on, say a Monday, with settlement scheduled for a Tuesday, gives all parties a few days before the weekend to negotiate an outcome. This pre-settlement inspection won’t allow you to change your mind on any elements of the contract, it will simply allow you to ensure that the property is being handed over as per the negotiated terms. Fittings and fixtures are the most obvious elements to check here, with dishwashers and curtain rails being commonly overlooked. · Insurance: Don’t make the mistake of thinking that insurance is only required from the time you become the owner. Depending on the terms of the contract you may need to get insurance for the property as soon as you have signed the contract or shortly thereafter. The REIQ standard residential contract states that the property is at the buyer’s risk from 5pm on the first business day after the contract date. This gives the buyer an adequate opportunity to obtain insurance.

· Faster (mid-week) conveyancing: The busiest days for settlements are Thursdays and Fridays and some firms can be doing dozens of settlements in one day. Reduce the risk of being impacted by the domino effect (where if something goes wrong in someone else’s settlement yours may not happen on time) by choosing a less busy day. You should also consider choosing a solicitor who is registered for electronic conveyancing. Queensland is now a state that allows fully electronic conveyancing. If you would like your property purchase to be conducted electronically, then both the buyer’s solicitor and the seller’s solicitor must be registered for electronic conveyancing. ●

THE most common day to settle a property is Friday, chosen by purchasers in order to move into their new home over the weekend - however, the REIQ advises that purchasers may want to consider a settlement in the early half of the week. Settlement is the day when the property ownership passes from the seller to you and the day when the balance of funds is due in full. Settlement is when the purchaser receives the title to the property. It is also the last day the seller is responsible for outgoings, such as rates, water and sewage. The purchaser takes over the outgoings after settlement. Settlement is also the day when you can collect the keys from your agent. As a

FAMILY CONNECTION COMES UP TRUMPS BY HOLLIE HARRIS Talented husband and wife team Rory and Janneke Williamson star in the Noosa Arts Theatre production of Jack of Hearts patron of Noosa Arts Theatre and master playwright David Williamson’s 50th stage play. Reviewed by Sydney press as one of Williamson’s funniest plays, Jack of Hearts is sure to tickle the funny bone and this husband and wife team are hilarious. Rory, a NIDA graduate, has worked as a writer, director and producer and actor in the USA, New Zealand and Australia. As an actor he has starred in productions on ABC’s Paper Giants and Nines, Underbelly Badness and has a regular role on the New Zealand popular series Shortland Street. He may be recognised from an old Bundy Rum television advertisement that ran many years back where he and Janneke met and acted together for the first time. In Jack of Hearts, Rory has been a local realtor for Richardson and Wrench Noosa for the past two years. Playing real estate agent, Stu in Jack of Hearts, Rory has something in common with his character in the play, but that’s about where the similarities stop. Stu is a real sleazeball in this classic Williamson romp. Janneke has worked successfully as an editor, director, actor and producer for the past 15 years. As an actor she has worked

locally and in the US in film and television from indie to large productions. For food lovers she writes a food blog called www. mothernourish.com. Janneke plays Nikki in Jack of Hearts, mistress of Stu and major gold-digger. “So let me get this straight“ says island Resort Manager Kelli to the titular Jack, who has quit his high-pressure job, scuttled his marriage and now works - not very effectively - as a bellhop. “Your friend is here with a lady who is definitely not his wife... and your ex-wife is here with her new man?“ This is a quick-stepping romantic comedy with more than a touch of screwball to it. And, yes, the apple does not fall far from the tree; Rory is David’s son. Jack of Hearts is directed by Noosa arts legend Jane Rivers and is sure to be another smash hit. Cut-price preview 6 September, at 7.30pm, all tickets $22. Gala Opening Night 7 September, at 7.30pm, all tickets $50, includes light supper and drinks. Evenings 8, 13, 14, 15, 16, 20, 21, 22 and 23 September at 7.30pm. Matinees 9, 10 and 17 September at 2pm. Tickets are $31 for adults, $27 concessions, $25 member/group, and $22 for under-18s. Hearts That Strain by Jake Bugg

Police at the station and they don’t look friendly, by Adrian McKinty

VICTORIA, BBC FIRST Tuesdays 8.30pm, Foxtel

With four records under his belt, Englishman Jake Bugg has checked the swagger that accompanied him on his earliest releases at the door, instead channelling Paul Simon and Donovan to brilliant effect on Hearts That Strain. Bugg is an excellent songwriter and the slight vibrato in Bugg’s voice is eerily similar to The Decemberists singer, Colin Meloy. And while Bugg’s songs are not as sweeping in scope as those of The Decemberists - the 11 tracks come in at just over 35 minutes in total - the structure of the album’s highs and lows make it a great way to spend that time. Relatively straightforward production is utilised, arrangements are guided but always leave plenty of room for the stars of the show: Bugg’s lyrics. ●

Sunday 3 September Sunshine Beach Surf Club 3pm Mo Swagger. The Imperial Hotel Eumundi 2pm Benny O and Esteban. Noosa Marina Market, Tewantin, 10am PlanB Modern Jazz Quartet. ●

McKinty is an excellent writer with a stylish touch of cynical lyricism. The setting is troubled Belfast in 1988. Inspector Sean Duffy is called in to investigate the death of a suspected drug dealer shot in the back with a crossbow arrow. It ain’t Injuns and it isn’t Robin Hood, but is it a rival or could it be related to IRA activity. As Sean probes more deeply he finds himself in danger from unknown assailants, investigated by Internal Affairs, and his relationship with his partner, Beth, on shaky ground when violence threatens their home. Then Sean is kidnapped, and taken at gunpoint to a lonely clearing where he is forced to dig his own grave. This is a cleverly plotted, fast and thrilling story, and available at the Noosa Library. ●

The new season of the acclaimed series Victoria goes to air next Tuesday night – following straight on from the repeat screening of series one. Victoria draws on real-life events and the Queen’s own exhaustive diaries to paint a vivid portrait of her transformation from an impulsive eighteen-year-old to her early years as wife, mother and head of a global empire. The second series will pick up six weeks after the first. Victoria is now a mother, trying to juggle both family and monarchy – a Victorian era working mother. She also has to deal with a young husband still trying to find his place in the monarchy, the world and the family. ●

FOCUS ON … Women's Health

IN SHAPE AFTER THE MOST SCARY FIGHT swimwear have also gone ahead in leaps and bounds. No more do you just have nude, black and white to choose from. There are many beautiful colours and designs available for breast cancer survivors to try on and look great in. The other good news is that the Federal Government will cover the cost of your breast prosthesis up to $400, per breast, every two years for the rest of your life. Many private health funds also cover the cost of post-mastectomy bras, so its worth giving them a call. The key to success, and looking beautiful in your clothes, is to have a professional fitting by a trained lingerie and prosthesis fitter. You don't have to settle for second best. At Tracey G Prosthetics and Lingerie Maroochydore and Auchenflower, the team are Amoena trained and certified, and won’t be satisfied with your new look, until you are. The Big C, the dreaded C word ... breast cancer! The words that no woman ever wants to hear but unfortunately so many do. The good news is survival rates are on the up due to medical advances, so that leaves you to focus on recovery after you’ve had a mastectomy, and to look great in your own clothes again. Gone are the days where a mastectomy patient has to settle for second best in the breast form and lingerie department. No more filling the breast cup with tissues or fabric, or being uncomfortable all day in a poor fitting bra. No more “frumpy” lingerie ... ever. Firstly, breast forms have come a long way in recent times. There are literally dozens of shapes, weights and sizes to choose from, which will match as closely to your remaining breast as possible. There are also breast forms that can be used while swimming or exercising, so your lifestyle doesn’t have to change. For ladies who have had bilateral surgery, picking the breast size you’ve always wanted to be, is now an option. Post-mastectomy wear such as bras and

Hormones don't have to rule your life.

WHEN HORMONES ARE OUT OF BALANCE HELP IS AT HAND Hormonal support - PMS to menopause Out of balance hormones can leave women experiencing symptoms such as feeling moody, weight gain, irregular cycles, heavy or painful periods, headaches, sugar or chocolate cravings. Menopause can bring other symptoms such as hot flushes, restless sleep, weight gain, mood changes, brain fog and the feeling of not recognising this person they have become. There are high potency, effective specific herbal medicines that can help balance hormones naturally with no side effects. Herbal medicine has been a women’s craft, helping women for many generations across many cultures and there are herbs that can help almost every hormonal imbalance. Combining ancient wisdom with modern knowledge, there is no need to “put up with” unpleasant and life disrupting hormonal imbalances and the associated symptoms.

Thyroid support The feeling of being tired all the time, gaining weight, losing a lot of hair, feeling flat and no motivation are symptoms

that could be associated with low thyroid function. Even after a thyroid check that has come up “normal” a thyroid could be in the range known as “sub-clinical” which means it is not bad enough yet to need prescription medicines. However this is where natural medicines can help support thyroid function to stop the downward spiral and help get energy, vitality and health back on track. FOCUS ON … Health, Wellness & Beauty THINK AHEAD FOR SUDDEN CARDIAC ARREST SURVIVAL BY HOLLIE HARRIS

Any employers who are unsure of their obligations can visit www.worksafe. qld.gov.au to understand and make sure their business is meeting its duty of care requirements.

Imagine a Monday morning like any other, walking into the office and making a cup of coffee while catching up with the team about the weekend. All of a sudden there is an unexpected sound of a cup smashing and one of the employees falls to the ground - unconscious, not breathing and with no pulse. · What should be done? For anyone who says “I don’t know,” the tragic reality is that without immediate CPR and a shock from a defibrillator (‘AED’ or ‘defib’), the victim could likely die within minutes. St John Ambulance Queensland CEO Alex Hutton said: “As an employer, you’re responsible for the health and safety of your employees and it is important to understand the number one risk facing Australia today sudden cardiac arrest.” What is a sudden cardiac arrest? Isn’t it the same as a heart attack? Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is the largest cause of death in Australia and is far more lethal and unpredictable than a heart attack. A heart attack occurs when the blood supply to part of the heart stops and thus causes a section of the heart muscle to begin to die whereas a cardiac arrest occurs when the heart stops beating. In other words, the heart attack victim is awake, and the heart is beating. In contrast, the sudden cardiac arrest victim may be unconscious, and the heart is not beating effectively. Every minute without CPR and Automatic External Defibrillation (AED) reduces the victim’s survival rate by 7 to 10 per cent.

· Get first aid ready Ensure there are enough trained first aiders in the workplace at all times. It’s also important to make sure that there is an adequate number of readily available, fully stocked first aid kits.

· Why is it then that so many workplaces don’t have a defibrillator? While every office is required to have a fire extinguisher, it’s not compulsory for employers to have a defibrillator in the workplace. This is a shocking fact, indeed, when it is realised how many Australians died last year due to sudden cardiac arrest (33,000), compared to fire emergencies (56). Employers want their staff to feel safe at work, and it’s well documented that safe and healthy workplaces boost staff morale, lower levels of absenteeism, reduce job stress and encourage higher organisational commitment. But when it comes to investing in first aid equipment such as defibrillators, most employers have a ‘it will never happen to me’ mentality, a typical response when the majority of staff are young, fit and healthy, or

· How do I get prepared? Understand the duty of care. By law, employers must provide a safe working environment so far as is reasonably practicable - this includes having an adequate number of trained first aiders, equipment, procedures and facilities needed to create and uphold a safe workplace for all employees at all times. Failure to provide adequate first aid facilities exposes businesses to financial liability and reputational damage.

· Invest in having a defibrillator on-site While a defibrillator is not compulsory in the workplace, it is a vital piece of emergency first aid equipment and the only definitive first aid treatment for sudden cardiac arrest. In the event of cardiac arrest, the correct response follows the ‘DRSABCD’ (Danger, Response, Send for help, Airway, Breathing, CPR, Defibrillation) model with CPR administered before a shock from a defibrillator. While using a defibrillator is simple (the user follows audio instructions), and anyone can use one in an emergency, having the knowledge and confidence to perform CPR and administer a defibrillator shock correctly is crucial to ensure the best outcome for the victim. While the incidence of sudden cardiac arrest cannot be controlled there are simple steps that can be taken to ensure employees’ lives are not at risk in the event of a workplace emergency. Don’t be one of those businesses that wishes it was prepared earlier. ●

LIFESTYLE

NATUROPATHS

‘I’ll get around to buying one eventually’ thinking, a typical response for most workplaces with older staff, or ‘low risk’ workplaces. When it comes to SCA, there’s no such thing as a ‘low risk’ workplace. Regardless of a person’s age, occupation or health status, cardiac arrest can happen to anyone, anywhere, at any time.

TRY THIS …

GIVE SOMEONE A LEG UP Attention business owners who would be willing to provide work experience in any of the following areas: · Warehousing · Logistics · Picking or packing · Farmhand · Nursery work The Sweetest Job Program assists Sunshine Coast locals to get skilled and work ready in the food and agribusiness sector, and they are seeking the assistance of local businesses to provide work experience opportunities for participants. This program really helps our local job seekers to get a leg up into this industry and at no risk to you or your business. Delivered by Regional Development Australia Moreton Bay (RDAMB), The Sweetest Job provides accredited training in Certificate II Logistics (food processing) and Certificate II Horticulture along with employability skills and work experience, all with the aim of supporting locals into a career in this exciting field. Logistics / food processing participants have gained competencies in the full certificate II qualification, including some of the following units; Deliver a service to customers, Shift materials safely using manual handling techniques, Implement the food safety programs and procedures, and Follow work health and safety procedures. Work experience is unpaid and can be any number of shifts over a one week or two- week period. Insurance is fully covered through RDAMB. The aim of the work experience is to give participants experience in the industry and to develop their skills and knowledge to assist in enhancing their work readiness and employment prospects. local participant a leg up into the industry. If you can assist, contact Angela Bueti on 0432 824 634 or angela@stonesthrowgroup. com.au. ●

THREE... reasons to consider an apprentice

1

Affordability Taking on new employees - be they full time staff or apprentices - can be a time consuming endeavour. Organising paperwork, off-the-job training and wages and entitlements can become a significant cost in time and effort. With a Group Training Organisation, you get all the benefits of a new apprentice with no administrative burden.

2

Flexibility Taking on an apprentice through a GTO gives added flexibility and adaptability, in comparison to taking on an apprentice or trainee directly. In an everchanging economy it can be difficult to predict what your business requirements will be one year, six months or even one month from now. This can make business owners apprehensive when it comes to signing on to a 3-year training contract.

3

Convenience Finally, working with a GTO is a far more convenient and productive way to take on an apprentice or trainee, as the GTO will be able to take care of all of the time-consuming paperwork and administrative duties. Time-poor business owners can then take on new apprentices and trainees and offer them valuable education and skills, while maintaining the efficiency of the wider business.

Dravit Syndrome is a rare catastrophic life-threatening paediatric epilepsy with no known cure. Jasmin’s mother Susan Paynter said Jasmin was born a happy, healthy baby who had a seizure at 12 weeks of age. The next five years of Jasmin’s life was spent in a mix of seizures, hospital visits, tests and medicines. “An average seizure for Jasmin was a minimum of 35 minutes requiring medical intervention, ambulance and hospital,” Susan said “At the age of one and two years old she had seizures that the emergency medicines would not stop. The doctors were given no 46 NOOSA TODAY

choice but to put her into drug-induced coma and helicopter her to Royal Children's Hospital ICU. “At two years of age Jasmin regressed. Talking and walking became a real challenge.” Jasmin was diagnosed with Dravet Syndrome at four years of age and over the years has tried numerous different combinations of seizure medications but seizures still persist. “We have learnt the many triggers for her seizures and do our best to avoid them,” Susan said. “Even with these precautions she can still have a seizure. Last year alone Jasmin broke her front teeth, cut her eye, grazed her face and back along with bumps on her head. Someone has to watch Jasmin 24 hours a day. Her activities have to be limited as she can’t regulate her own body temperature. She overheats very quickly and with that comes a seizure. We have to live minute by

minute as every decision is made depending on the time of the day, the temperature and Jasmin’s ability to cope. Despite these challenges Jasmin, now 13, is a miracle to her family. “Every day is a blessing as many other Dravet’s children have moved on to heaven way before their time. She is our shining light. She is loving, forgiving, affectionate, social and enjoys every minute of her life. She has never complained, ever. She brings a smile to my face every single day.” The inaugural 5k 4 Dravet walk on 7 October will raise money for Molly’s Fund to support research into Dravet Syndrome and assist families of children with the syndrome. Molly’s parents set up the fund in honour of their daughter, Molly, a friend of Jasmin’s who died at the age of 12. The volunteer-run walk which will begins at Noosaville State School hopes to raise $2000-$4000 through its entry fee of $20 per person, $40 per family, sponsorship

AROUND THE GROUNDS

IT'S ALL ABOUT PACING YOURSELF It is really important that the Year 11 students pace themselves to the finish line. There are looming deadlines for assessment across all subject areas and it is the students who are organised and who have planned and prepared well for the end of Term 3 that will succeed. The best approach to each term is to view them like an athlete would a marathon (or in my case, a half marathon). Preparation and readiness is important and saving some energy for the final sprint is vital for a sustainable and efficient journey. I applied these principles to the first half marathon I took on a few weeks ago. I put in the time and ensured I had done enough groundwork in the months and weeks leading up to the Sunshine Coast half marathon, familiarising myself with the track and training my body to prepare for the 21.1 kilometres ahead. I knew I could do the distance, as I had practiced it as a part of my training and I put measures in place to ensure that I was physically and mentally prepared, resting up and easing off on the training in the days before the event. Year 11 students should apply a similar philosophy with their assessment and

classwork. If they put in the hours in the lead-up to the deadlines or exam, they can then afford the very important time to rest and take a break prior to the assessment due date. Approaching a task or deadline with a well-rested mind and body by having enough sleep, taking breaks from study and socialising with friends, and ensuring the right kinds of sustaining foods are put into your body, will lead to optimal results. From the start of the half marathon, I paced myself. Unlike many of the competitors in the event, I did not race up Alexandra Headland like a startled rabbit. Many of my fellow competitors reached the top of the hill, vomited and hit a mental and physical roadblock; their legs slowed and buckled as they had burnt off all their nervous energy in an instant. Other competitors had similar issues later on in the event as they had not left enough energy in reserve to continue at the fast pace they had set off with. It is interesting looking at my pace per kilometre breakdown of the event. My strategy is evident in the numbers. As every kilometre passed, my pace steadily increased. I ensured that I had enough energy in reserve for a fast finish and gave it

Pace yourself - and you will finish too! my all in the final few kilometres, when it all mattered. The first five kilometres of the event were done in 4:46 minutes per kilometre and the final 1.1 kilometres completed in 0.16 minutes per kilometre. I finished with nothing left in the tank and this is how I hope the Year 11s pace themselves this term. Cross that finish line knowing that you

have given it your all and be proud of the effort you have put in, knowing it was your personal best. I will be cheering for you at the finish line along with your parents, teachers and friends who have supported and coached you along the way. ● - Bridge Muir, Year 11 co-ordinator, Noosa District State High School

TEAGAN’S OUR GOLDEN GIRL Teagan McGowan was a standout performer at the Queensland Short Course Championships at Chandler swimming pool in Brisbane this month. The Good Shepherd Aquatics member took home gold medals in the 50m butterfly and 50m backstroke plus three silver medals in 100m backstroke, 50m freestyle and 100m butterfly. Teagan also broke the 11-year-old girls Queensland record in the 50m backstroke with a time of 30.74 seconds. Teagan was one of 17 swimmers to attend the competition from the club. GSA swimmers achieved a total of 44 personal bests. SURPRISE IN STORE FOR CROQUET PLAYERS NOOSA CROQUET We surely live in a tough world, be it Donald Trump, parliamentarians with dual citizenships, or even the croquet handicapping system. The Noosa Croquet Club pennant team travelled to Coolum this past week where the competition is supposed to be limited to players with handicaps of fewer than eight free turns. Imagine the Noosa team’s surprise when it faced Coolum players rated a total of 48 free turns over the eight matches to be played. Despite this strange set of circumstances, the Noosa team won the day six matches to four. The individual match scores follow with Noosa players listed first. Stewart McConnell defeated Patricia Smith 6:5; Niven Gugich lost to William Yip 3:5; Stewart McConnell also lost to William Yip 1:7; Niven Gugich won against Patricia Smith 7:3. In the other four singles Galina Marakova won against Lionel Silbery 6:4; Peter Richardson defeated Lorraine Stott 7:2; Galina defeated Lorriane 7:3; while Peter fell to Lionel 2:4. In the doubles, Stewart and Niven lost to Patricia and William 5:9 while Peter, pairing with Ray Powley defeated Lionel and Lorraine 7:6. In hoops won, Noosa garnered a total of 51 against Coolum’s 48, so the handicappers might claim that the system works, providing an even playing field across the teams. ● DAVE AND RAY WIN AMBROSE EVENT NOOSA PAR 3 SATURDAY August Ambrose - Winners: Dave Kalbrunner and Ray Edgar 46.75; Runners-up: Ed Tann and Wanee Tann 48.75. RIVER DWELLERS FIRE UP With the breeze up a little the past week, only the larger craft ventured out. For those that did get out, the reefs where really firing. There were good numbers of snapper being taken on Micro Jigs on North Reef. The 40g-50g sizes seemed to be doing the job. There are some good schools of bait showing on the sound at the moment so make sure you have a good supply of bait jigs. The Barwon banks and the Hards have been fishing extremely well for pearl perch, snapper, cobia and jew making the long trip from the bar well worth it. A little closer to home mixed reef species like parrot, sweetlip, cod and squire have been keeping anglers happy at Sunshine Reef along with some quality coral trout still hanging around. Good sized mackerel are also in good numbers with both spotted and school mackerel taken around jew shoals and Sunshine, pilchard floaters seem to be the best of the baits. For the fisherman who can’t get offshore, the Noosa River is really starting to fire up as we move into the warmer months. September means two things which are big flathead and the start of the mangrove noosatoday.com.au

jack season: this is when those two species start to show up and excite river anglers. Flathead you’ll find will start schooling up as we move into their spawning season, the larger females start cogenerating on the edges of the deeper channels on low tide and the shallow sand flats on the high tide, these big girls attract many young male suiters so it is not unusual to pick up a good feed of flathead from the same spot. This is also the time of year we start to see the mangrove jack fire up, as the water temperature and humidity rises. The upper reaches of the Noosa River is a great place to start your hunt with the area between the lakes really firing in the low light periods. Live bait is one way of tangling with a jack so having a good cast net and collecting some herring or poddy mullet will help the cause. Cast these lives into structure and if there is a jack living there it won’t be long before all hell breaks loose and you are in touch with one of these thought fighting fish. Whiting have been in good numbers along with bream, plenty of quality fish have been taken from the river banks over the last week, prawns, worms and yabbies have

Surface walker and poppers have both claimed some good fish in the low light periods. On the beaches, tailor are still around with the later tide seeming to be the time to target them, pilchard, mullet and bonito have been the go-to baits, whiting are in good numbers and have been more prevalent on the mid run out tide, bream and flathead are also in the gutters, so prawns and small baitfish have proven there worth. COULD THIS BE THE YEAR OF THE PIRATES? For the Noosa sporting fraternity it would have to be the success story of the year. For the first time since 2008 the Noosa Pirates A Grade Rugby League team has made the grand final. In what some fans are describing as their best second half for several seasons, the Pirates last Saturday defeated Kawana 20 to 8 to put them into the final. “The defense shown by our players for the full eighty minutes right across the field,

was truly outstanding,” Club President Greg Christerson said. "But not only that, the fact that we have made the final is something of a fairy tale. It has been one of those seasons during which everyone in our club has really put in a great effort. Coaches, players, supporters, the Sunshine Coast Falcons and sponsors combined to turn our fairy tale into a reality.” It all started in the first months of the season during which time the Pirates were definitely in doubt as to whether or not they would be able to field an A Grade team.

But owing to the combined efforts of President Greg Christerson and CEO of the Sunshine Coast League James Ward, this was not only addressed but also resolved, much to the satisfaction of all involved. “At one stage it looked as though there would only be five teams in the competition,” said Pirates Secretary Lexie Mawn. “However with Falcons offering to supply players to our club it meant a full team for us and this enabled us to furnish a sixth team for the competition. It was a win/win situation for all involved.” While this was being organised, Pirates head coach Ron Greentree was performing miracles. Not only was he fulfilling his duties as coach, but he was leading in such a fashion, that despite going through a tough season, he also maintained high morale amongst his players. As a result of his all-round performance,

not only has he taken ther Pirates to the grand final, but he has finished the season with a good solid group of players for the season ahead. “On looking back on past achievements,” said one supporter, “this could be the return of the Magnificent Seven. We won the premiership in 1977/97 and 2007 - this year is another seven so Maroochydore had better be careful.” Add to this in the junior ranks Pirates Under 15s will also play in their grand final at Gympie on Saturday. From the man who runs the gate to the ladies behind the bar - to the ball boys who run the line and the ever-present RSL and Hang Loosa, it has definitely been the Year of the Pirates. This Sunday it will be Pirates vs Maroochydore grand final at Kawana - good luck to all.

MATCH REPORT – DIVISION 1 RESERVES QUALIFYING FINAL Noosa Tigers v Mayne FC he Reserves secured a spot in the Semi-Final stage of the inals competition with a hard fought and convincing win over long-time rivals Mayne. Trailing by 20 points early in the irst quarter, the Reserves hit back late in the quarter to even the game and started playing an exciting brand of football.

on the football. Coach Danny O’Brien was lively up forward as usual with assistance from Adam Curry and also veteran Brett Duke. Full forward Seb Clit provided a great focal point for the team and had plenty of space to work his opponent round. At half time the Reserves had a slight lead of 9 points.

In blustery conditions at Fishermans Road, it was diicult for both sides to ind targets by foot and hand and made for a ‘hot’ football in contested situations. Mayne deinitely came to play and put their best foot forward early, however it wasn’t long before the Reserves started to ind their groove.

From there, it was all the Tigers as we piled on 9 goals to 1 in the second half. Patty Harris played a sublime game a centre half back taking numerous intercept marks and repelling Mayne’s forward attacks. he Reserves ran out 62 point winners and earnt themselves a match-up against 1st place Maroochydore in a semi-inal. he winner heads straight into the Grand Final. 2. Is your pool green? – According to the Healthy Pools Survey, 57% of pool owners experienced a ‘green pool’ in the past 12 months. If your pool has taken a turn for the worst then it’s time to call in a professional. Make sure you get a qualified pool technician to restore the health of your pool water, otherwise it may end up costing you a lot more to rectify the problem.

3. The pool LOOKS clean, but you’re not really sure if the water is healthy? – Taking the time to vacuum and skim the pool frequently is only part of the battle when it comes to keeping your pool water clean, healthy and ready for family fun. To maintain optimum pH and chlorine levels, make sure you’re doing water tests once a fortnight, or even weekly in heavy use periods. Be sure to clean filters and basket regularly to ensure maximum efficiency.

LIFE OF BRINE

PHIL JARRATT

A TALE OF TWO RESTAURANTS Back “home” in Bali last week, I plunged straight into another film shoot, this one about the island’s rich surfing history for a Singapore-based TV program. For me it was a great excuse to catch up with old Balinese surfing mates like G-Land camp pioneer Bobby Radiasa and Bali’s most successful pro surfer Rizal Tandjung, but over the course of the shoot I was taken back to another fascinating aspect of Bali’s recent history - a tale of two restaurants. Ironically, in male-dominated Balinese business, it was two young women who created the iconic restaurants that paved the way for Balinese fare as we know it today, and both started with nothing, selling food on the street. Born in Kuta in 1949, Zenik Sukenny began selling soft drinks on the beach at Kuta in 1970. Soon there were many drink sellers competing with her, but Zenik’s point of difference was that her drinks were icy cold, because she would collect them from her supplier early in the morning and break up a block of ice to wedge between the bottles of Coke and Fanta. This, combined with her sunny nature and incredible ability to remember almost every customer’s name, soon gave her a thriving business, which evolved into a warung - or food stall - under the trees at the beach end of Jalan Pantai. Having moved rapidly from drink-selling to warung management, Zenik went to her mother and asked if she could sell a pig on her behalf. When her mother agreed, she grabbed a squealing piglet from the family compound and took it to the stepmother of a young friend, Made, who cooked and sold babi guling in a small warung near the crossroads that the tourists had nicknamed ‘Bemo Corner’. At a time when the US dollar bought 210 rupiah, Made’s stepmother offered 225 for the piglet. Zenik took the money back to her mother and asked her how much she could keep. Her mother asked, “Why do you want money?” “Because I want to start a proper business,” she replied. “Give me the twenty-

five and keep the 200,” her mother said, “but make it a good business.” Thus Zenik started her warung with less than one dollar in capital, but soon she had a name for the best pancakes and fruit salad in Kuta, and decided to create a proper restaurant in her family compound in a gang behind Jalan Pantai. A regular English customer named John who had worked in landscape design offered to make a pool garden at the front of the compound, around which the tables would sit. An American customer suggested she call the restaurant “Poppies”, after his own establishment in California. Poppies Restaurant had its soft opening at Christmas 1972. The first menu was handwritten and Zenik had decorated it with drawings of flowers. She also put her own name at the bottom so that her warung customers would know it was still her. The big opening was 8 January 1973. Mick Jagger, about to start the Rolling Stones’ Pacific Tour if the governments of Japan and Australia would let him in, came

over from Tandjung Sari for the evening. Zenik recalls: “I gave him Table One.” Poppies had arrived. The restaurant has evolved over the years, but I can still sit by one of John’s ponds and channel 1974, when my friends and I would argue and laugh into the night, and Geoffrey, who’s still the barman today, would fuel our excitement with double Black Russians. The brown door still leads into the small room where Zenik was born and her mother died. And when I sat down with Bobby Radiasa last week to film an interview for the cameras, it was Geoffrey who brought us our mojitos. When Zenik sold her mother’s pig to finance her business, a pretty fifteen-year-old girl with hair down to her waist took the animal off into the family compound to be slaughtered while Ibu Gede counted out the rupiah. Made Masih had left school at thirteen to help out in the family business, and by 1970 it had become known to the hippies

and surfers who frequented it as “Made’s Warung”, because the vivacious, laughing teenager gave the place its character. By the time Zenik opened Poppies, Made had successfully converted her warung into a small restaurant. Her father sold a cow and they used the money to buy some tables and chairs and kerosene lamps, but they had no refrigeration. While Made opened up to serve breakfast each morning, her mother would walk the six kilometres into Denpasar markets and then walk back with the day’s food on her head. In 1973 a young Dutch musician and antique dealer named Peter Steenbergen arrived in Bali and rented a room behind Bemo Corner, strode down the dusty Jalan Pantai to eat at a warung, and immediately fell in love with the gorgeous young girl who served him. Peter started filling the restaurant with Dutch colonial antiques and tribal masks, and it soon developed the look and feel of an Amsterdam coffee house, which made it the “it” place of Kuta. In those days you could sit in the front row at Made’s for a few hours and the world would come to you. Our filming finished, Arthur Karvan whisked us off to the 48th anniversary of Made’s Warung, held in the far more expansive Seminyak branch, which has its own dance floor. In the centre of a vast crowd, that included just about every Bali vagabond, rogue and restaurateur still standing, Peter and Made, married now for 43 years, cut the cake and held court. Only Zenik and John sent their apologies, too busy running their Poppies franchise in Thailand. ●

BETWEEN THE FLAGS

SWAG OF WELL-DESERVED AWARDS In what can only be described as a night to remember, the captain of the Sunshine Beach Surf Life Saving Club, Scott Summers, came away from the Annual Queensland Surf Life Saving Awards of Excellence Dinner on Saturday evening as the recipient of three state awards - with two of them being considered amongst the most prestigious. The awards were Operations Support Person of the Year, Life Saver of the Year and the Clive Hammond Gold Medal; the latter two were awards most coveted by lifesavers and there can be no doubt that both were well deserved. Summers, who comes from a military background, told me when discussing life in the military as compared to life in his surf club, “There are three similarities to both - advanced training, self-discipline and above all mateship. With life saving being a rescue organisation, these are the three basic essentials needed to build a strong and united club. At the recent Sunshine Coast Life Saving Awards Dinner where Scott received similar acknowledgement, he remarked that in the military he served his country - now he serves the community, and both services were to the people of Australia. It is quite obvious that in both, his leadership capabilities (in particular when working with the young) is a major factor. Another member from Sunshine Beach to be recognised was club president Craig

Clint Swanton SLSQ with Scott Summers and Hon. Mick de Brenni. Law who received the Surf Sports Manager of the Year. With so many surf carnivals and still water events, the summer season is always full on and with the importance of surf sports in our clubs these awards are always well-deserved. Sunshine veteran Max Pettigrove received the Life Guard of the Year. This clubby has been a major member of

Sunshine for many long, hard years and it is good to see his continued input receive recognition. With men of the calibre of Craig Law, Scott Summers and Max Pettigrove, we know that the youth of our clubs is in good hands. Noosa didn’t come home empty-handed as Alison Pegg received the Masters Competitor of the Year.

It is that time of the year again. The Seahorse Nippers are back on the sand and Saturday saw another good attendance with thirty two children and sixty-plus helpers. The Saturday morning sessions which are conducted from 8am-9am will continue for another two Saturdays, 2-9 September. â—?
