Most Puffing Billy trains commence their journey from Belgrave and the township, which is only a short walk away offers an abundance of shopping and dining options. It’s a well-kept secret that many locals have tried to keep hidden. Horatio Jones’ cottage, just outside of Belgrave was built in 1917 and is an incredible architectural feat, being made of flattened four-gallon kerosene tins on a frame of roughly-hewn eucalyptus trees. Nestled in the Dandenongs, the cottage tells a good old-fashioned Aussie spirit story about Mr Jones’s return home from WWI and upon returning his conviction to build a house. The location of the house is not generally known but those interested in visiting can call 9754 4936 to make a booking.

TESSELAAR TULIP FESTIVAL

ALIVE WITH COLOURS OF SPRING This year’s Tesselaar Tulip Festival will have more tulips than ever before.

BACK with more tulips than ever before, the Dandenong Ranges will once again transform into a burst of colour for the 64th annual Tesselaar Tulip Festival this September. From Thursday 14 September to Tuesday 10 October, visitors are set to be amazed by the beauty of almost a million tulips across 25 acres of spectacular Silvan farmland. But while over 130 varieties of tulips are bound to be the stars of the show, there’s something for everyone at the floral festival which caters for children, grandparents and everyone in-between. Among the events for this year’s Tulip Festival is a celebration of cultures with Turkish, Dutch and Irish Weekends featuring throughout the festival’s 27 days. While Turkish weekend will celebrate the origin of the tulip, Dutch weekend honors Tesselaar Tulip founders Cees and Johanna Tesselaar’s emigration from the Netherlands on their wedding day - and the tulips they brought with them. Finally, Irish weekend delights in the ‘greening of the tulip’, and like the Turkish and Dutch weekends before it, the event will feature traditional art, music, dance and gourmet food and is bound to be a colourful and exciting time for all involved. Over the Rainbow Week will also feature from 18 to 21 September and will treat audiences to live performances of the Wizard of Oz twice daily. Wizard of Oz holds a special place within the Tesselaars’ hearts, as it was released the same year as the couple landed in Oz (Australia that is). And while the Tesselaars’ know that it was a field of poppies in the movie, they like to think tulips are prettier anyway. Children’s Weeks will also take place throughout the festival, with a huge variety of activities to keep the kids entertained. And for the big kids, there’s the Food, Wine and Jazz Weekend that invites guests to ‘meet, greet and be merry among the Tulips’. Based at The Tulip Farm at 357 Monbulk Road, Silvan, the Tulip Festival will take place from 14 September to 10 October and is open from 9am to 5pm daily. A VISIT to Grants on Sherbrooke is always a pleasure. Located in the Dandenong Ranges this well known refreshment icon has catered to tourists and locals since the 1950s. NOON After a brisk walk to the waterfalls and back it’s time to head back to Olinda to reinvigorate those muscles and treat the tastebuds. Established in 1893, Coonara Springs is one of the oldest restaurants in the Dandenong Ranges and if the saying ‘experience breeds excellence,’ rings true, then Coonara Springs is nothing short of excellent. The twoacre kitchen garden influences an al la carte menu, with the restaurant offering dishes of deeply classic meals draped in local produce from the Yarra Valley.

The floor to ceiling windows in the restaurant allow patrons to view the natural Australian bushland with rosellas, kookaburras, lyrebirds, cockatoos, wallabies and even the occasional echidna wandering around. Grants is the only place in Victoria where visitors are permitted to hand feed the native birds. 9am to 5pm in feeding area only.

LAKE MOUNTAIN

WHERE THE WONDERS NEVER CEASE

THROUGH the colder months of the year Lake Mountain transforms into a snow-covered winter wonderland. But as the warmer weather kicks back in, the mountain offers a totally new experience; giving visitors the opportunity to escape to a cooler climate and take a walk through an amazing alpine environment. After being ravaged by the 2009 wildfires, Lake Mountain allows tourists to experience another wonder, with the once severely burnt plateau being transformed by the natural phenomenon of regeneration. As Lake Mountain environmental officer Sue Parry explained, from a blackened landscape to regrowth of all descriptions, Lake Mountain is well on the way to recovering. “The first signs of life were the ferns which showed green shoots within weeks, but the real delight was the first spring as the snow melted and a carpet of tiny seedlings appeared,” Sue said. “First it was the snow gums, then the alpine ash and finally the wattles which all appeared within a couple of months. Mixed in with them were a myriad of other seedlings and reshoots. “Now eight years later, the spring and summer wildflower display is well worth a visit. Over 90 species have been identified since the fires so the recovery has been spectacular. No matter what time you visit over the spring and summer you will find something in flower to admire.”

LAKE MOUNTAIN Sue said Lake Mountain offered exceptional experiences for walkers and mountain bike riders alike, allowing each visitor the opportunity to immerse themselves in the unique environment. “For walkers, as well as the ski trails and the walk to Keppel’s Hut, the mountain also has a day walk from the resort over the summit, Snowy Hill and Mt Arnold, all the way to the entry station on the Marysville Road. A distance of 12km takes you from the sub-alpine environment, to alpine ash forest and pockets of rainforest; both of which survived the fires. “The trail was built as a shared path for mountain bikes and walkers and is working well as such. It connects a number of pre-existing tracks, and the strategic firebreak constructed after 2009 to protect Melbourne’s water catchments in case of future fires.” Lake Mountain will be offering guided wildflower walk on 20 and 27 November. For more information visit www.lakemountainresort.com.au or contact Sue at sue@lakemountainresort.com.au Right: Returning to it’s former glory, Lake Mountain offers walkers the chance to experience a unique environment throughout the warmer months. DISCOVER THE YARRA VALLEY

A SUNSET SPECTACLE BY KENDRA SPENCER A SEVEN Acre Rock sunset is easily one of the most incredible things to witness in the local area, and it’s a spectacle that makes for amazing photo opportunities. The Rock is a large granite outcrop located 8km from Powelltown, a small town 15km south-east of Yarra Junction with a mere population of 200 people. Positioned 743m above sea level, completely unobstructed, panoramic views are provided of the Yarra State Forest and Bunyip State Park ... on a clear day, you can even get glimpses of Western Port. Accessed via Learmonth Creek Road, the 45-minute return walk is well worth the time and effort. The untampered, winding pathways, surrounding tea trees and the typical mountain ash are just part of the experience. When you reach the top, the views are utterly breathtaking.

Sunset at Seven Acre Rock. Spring is the perfect time to visit Seven Acre Rock, because the weather provides supreme views and you don’t have to deal so much with the potential danger of slippery, snowy pathways. In any case, the tracks are just that, tracks, so be sure to wear sturdy shows and rug up if you are planning to visit on a colder day. Even when the weather is chilly, as it can be in spring, the views are still incredible. There’s a feeling of utter awe as you stand on the rock, looking out over the valleys below. The seemingly endless landscapes allow you to feel safe yet amazed at the same time, and the isolation encourages total relaxation and the opportunity to simply admire. Seven Acre Rock is the perfect place to head out into the bush for an adventure, a winding walk and perhaps even a picnic, making it a perfect day trip. HAPPY TRAILS BY EFFIE CALOUTAS THE trail begins at Lilydale Railway Station and follows 40 kilometres of the historical railway line through the diverse landscapes and interesting townships along the Warburton Highway. At various points along the way you’ll find yourself surrounded, or immersed in, vineyards, farm land and forests, with the magnificent mountain range that surrounds Warburton, always in the picture. Along the way you cross restored bridges and meander past remnants of former station platforms. Plan your trip to be on the trail on a Wednesday or Sunday and you have the opportunity to stop in at the original 1882 railway station now operating as the Upper Yarra Historical Museum. The trail’s gradients are ideal for all fitness levels including families and there are well-defined sections that range from 2.5 kilometres, between Launching Place and Yarra Junction, to the longest stretch of 6.9 kilometres between Lilydale and Mount Evelyn. For more information visit www.yarraranges.vic.gov.au, or contact Recreation and Active Living on 1300 368 333.

HISTORIC TRUCKS GO THE DISTANCE EVOLVED from the formation of the Sydney-based Historic Fire Engine Association of Australia in 1972, the Historic Commercial Vehicle Club of Australia (HCVC) is this year celebrating its 45th anniversary. Since the Victorian branch of the Historic Commercial Vehicle Club became the federal body in 1977, the club has gone from strength to strength, resulting in a well-respected motoring club with over 600 members. As president of the HCVC Alan Taylor explained, the club is an opportunity for Australian car and history buffs to come together and celebrate their interests. “Our club caters for vehicles 25 years and older with a commercial application and includes trucks, buses and fire engines just to name a few. The aim is to promote the preservation, restoration and operation of these vehicles for use at shows, displays, parades and assisting charities,” Allan said. “Our vehicles bring history to life and provide an educational link from Australia’s road transport beginnings to the rigs seen on our roads today. “Our club now holds four historic commercial vehicle displays annually including the display day held at Yarra Glen Racecourse in November, the Broadford ‘Spirit of the Hume’ display weekend in February, the Ballarat Branch’s Clunes Showgrounds display weekend in March and the Northern Branch’s Wangaratta historic vehicle show weekend in September.” Allan said these shows attracted thousands of people including fleet operators, owner operators, service providers, exhibitors, enthusiasts as well as other mutual heritage transport groups as they experienced a variety of vehicles with a rich history. “Historic commercial vehicles create interest across a broad section of the community and this is especially evident by the excitement they provide for children, and adults alike, wherever we go,” Allan said. “We appreciate all (vehicles). Our trucks span over 100 years of history with restored trucks built before the First World War still coming out to play. But it doesn’t matter what make or type of vehicle we have, we all have one thing in common: we love to preserve our heritage through road transport and has proved to be a common bond.” To find out more about the Historic Commercial Vehicle Club of Australia visit www.hcvc.com.au

MUSIC MAGIC HITS THE STREETS

Melbourne band, The Royal High Jinx who write, play and sing music inspired by European traditions are among a huge line-up set to perform at this year’s Healesville Music Festival.

FOR the eighth year running, the community of Healesville will be transformed into a centre of local, national and international music for this year’s Healesville Music Festival. The Healesville Music Festival has become a tradition of the Yarra Valley, one that began as a single-afternoon, pay-as-you-feel affair, but is now a three-day, multi-venue and all-ages event. Across November 10, 11 and 12, magnificent music will emanate at pop-up street-side performances, as well as the town’s many cafe venues and of course at the cultural hub of the Town Hall. Canadian troubadour Scott Cook will front the evergrowing festival line-up, which this year will also feature a variety of acts from solo singer-songwriters to full-blown orchestras complete with ukuleles. Other performers on the bill include the brass-laden big sounds of the Northern Folk, the piercingly sweet tunes of the Frencham Smith Trio, and barnstorming locals The Humbuckin’ Pickups. But it’s the extra, left-of-centre events that have made this volunteer-run music festival stand out from other annual events. A classic, whip-crackingly good bush dance will once again turn any shy child (or adult) into a heel ’n’ toe aficionado, and, for the first time, the Barking Spider Visual Theatre will be workshopping their unique ‘Scratch and Trash Orchestra’. What’s more, the town’s picturesque racecourse grounds will again accommodate campers staying for the weekend. It’s a setting that’s proved itself perfect for impromptu acoustic sessions and is only a free shuttle bus ride away from the centre of town. The 2017 performance schedule, ticketing information and other essential details can all be found at healesvillemusicfestival.com.au

HARVEST TRAILS The trail is a great way to view Steavenson River.

TRAILS TO ADVENTURE BY PETER DOUGLAS WITH so many beautiful trails enticing hikers to Marysville, where do you start? One inspiring, yet convenient option is the Tree Fern Gully Trail, which snakes through the hills of Marysville and finishes up at the stunning Steavenson Falls. Though either direction is fine, you can start from the middle of town at the back of Gallipoli Park, then follow the wellmaintained gravel trail to Steavenson Falls and back. Popular among local hiking groups, this relatively easy trail is about 8.65km in length and takes around one hour and 15 minutes to complete one way, with very few steep gradients to conquer. There is no need to hurry your journey, either. Take time to enjoy the manna gums, the mountain ash and tree ferns, as well as the sound of water rushing over the rocks as the trail leads you alongside Steavenson River. The walk itself can only be described as a peaceful environment in which you can enjoy nature at its finest. The trail is lined with beautiful old trees and colourful flora, as well as energetic birdlife ‘zipping’ around the forest setting. There are plenty of points along the way where you can take a breather, or to take same nice photographs, such as the little bridges that cross the river. One enticing aspect is the trail can be as challenging as you make it, given it’s perfect for some trail-running or mountainbike riding. Of course, waiting for you at the top is one of the most inspiring views in the region, Steavenson Falls. While the bottom viewing platform is great, if you want to take the extra hike up to the top platform, you’ll see not only views of the waterfall, but beautiful Marysville, too. If you choose the Gallipoli Park option, allow about three hours for a return journey. However, you could always ask a friend to pick you up at the car park at Steavenson Falls, which is only a few minutes drive from the town centre. If you have never ventured to Marysville before, this is one way ‘Tourist News’ recommends you can uncover its natural charm.

The gravel trails are wellmaintained and easy to trek. Pictures: PETER DOUGLAS

FRESH PRODUCE

FRESHNESS FROM THE FARM GATE BY KATH GANNAWAY YOU really don’t get any fresher from the farm than when you go to the farm gate. Spring and summer in the Dandenong Ranges and the Yarra Valley is ripe for the picking when it comes to getting out into the orchards, among the vines or down in the strawberry patch. The U-Pick season varies according to the fruit resulting in a limited window of opportunity to indulge with some fruits, so planning your forays is the best strategy to be sure to get a taste of all that’s on offer. Don’t despair if you don’t have time this season to pick for yourself, there are lots of farms and orchards that offer fresh-picked fruit direct from their bins. Fruits and berries on offer include strawberries, blueberries, boysenberries, currents, raspberries, cherries, loganberries, youngberries, a wonderful variety of stonefruit ... even lemons. Each farm has its own flavour, and you may find yourself, having spent an hour or two picking the old fashioned way, keen to take advantage of some of the other attractions on offer. Take time to linger in farm cafes and take home some home-style jams, sauces or chutneys to extend the experience, or as a unique gift for family and friends. Some farms even offer bottling workshops. You’ll find that different farms have different payment structures so it’s a good idea to phone ahead to be sure of what you can expect to pay, and what payment options are available.

Picked fresh for great taste. 1191487-ACM37-15

Be sure too to wear sensible footwear, take a hat and sunscreen, and, whether you’re picking or buying fresh, an esky or cooler bag is a must to ensure that the fruit is in peak condition when you arrive home.

ROMANCING THE BOTTLE

BY DEREK SCHLENNSTEDT HOW to convey the meaning of the name James Halliday? A savant, renaissance vigneron, and pre-eminent wine critic - all are titles which could be associated with Australia’s most senior and well-known wine writer. For those who have endeavoured on a serious study of understanding wine he is a teacher, but to the many who stare vacantly at the wine list wondering which best matches our meal he is also a guiding voice. When it comes to choosing a wine to accompany your cheese platter, or to complement your seared barramundi there’s only one book that can help decipher the riddle and with over 700 pages filled with various wines and their respective flavours, James Halliday’s Wine Companion has become a wine bible. His most recent book, the 2018 Halliday Wine Companion, was released on 2 August and Tourist News spoke with the critic on his life as a wine-critic, the new book, and what’s in store for the future of Yarra Valley vignerons. “I am really proud of this edition, my 12th, and love that Australia is returning to produce the classic varieties of chardonnay and shiraz, with pinot noir the rising star.” Featuring more than 1200 wineries including 78 new ones, the book contains around 6840 individual wine ratings and is considered the definitive guide to Australian wines. Each year a new edition is released with completely new wines and James said that while wine tasting and writing may seem like a lavish job he works six days a week from seven in the morning until seven at night. “I used to taste 140 wines, now being older I taste 70 wines a day,” he said. “People think it must be the best job in the world, but I get up every morning in time to be down and starting tasting at 7am in the morning.” “I taste through unbroken until 12.30pm when I have lunch and then I return to the tasting room at 1pm and taste again until 3.15pm ... then Touristnews

at 5pm I go back down to the tasting room and taste through until 7pm.” Having completed over 70 books all relating to wine, it was no surprise that James, a Sydneysider from birth would eventually move to the glistening Yarra Valley in 1983, and set-up his own winery in Coldstream thereafter. Of the move he said he always expected Yarra Valley would become a contestant in the world stage of wine and always wanted to create pinot. “In ’83 I came to Melbourne for my law firm, but the other reason for my coming was it gave me an opportunity to get close to the Yarra Valley and make pinot.”

“I USED TO TASTE 140 WINES, NOW BEING OLDER I TASTE 70 WINES A DAY…” “It was while researching books in the early 1980s that I came down here and looked at around 16 or so wineries that were in existence in the Yarra Valley - now there are around 170.” “From quite early on I had a reasonable shred of an idea that it would - I think I knew the opportunity in the Yarra Valley was and remains virtually unlimited,” he said. At 78 his phenomenal dedication to the wine industry is yet to deteriorate and his phenomenal body of works continue to grow. As the industry becomes mechanised and Australian wine exports to China continue to surge James said he predicts the Yarra Valley will become a pre-eminent wine producer. “They (China) certainly should be aware of all the upsides of the Yarra.” “The Yarra Valley is only about making very good to great wine, it’s far too difficult here to make ordinary wine,” he said. “IT’S THE OPTIMAL CLIMATE WE HAVE HERE WHICH IS SO FANTASTIC FOR WINEMAKING…”

Q&A WITH GIANT STEPS HEAD WINEMAKER STEVE FLAMSTEED Where do you start with a Q&A with Giant Steps head winemaker Steve Flamsteed? No question really ... although Steve’s first qualification was in food ... now it’s all about the wines. For that fortunate turn of events wine lovers can thank the French. Steve developed a number of culinary passions, including cheese making, which would take him to France to study his trade. It was after working at Chateau du Bluizard in Beaujolais that he was inspired to become a qualified winemaker. After working for Leeuwin Estate in Margaret River (1999-2002) he moved to the Yarra Valley working at Yarra Burn Winery in the Upper Yarra (2002-2003) before joining Giant Steps in 2003. Named Gourmet Traveller’s Wine Maker of the Year in 2016, chairman of judges Peter Forrestal described the Healesville winemaker as having a finely-tuned palate, instinctive flair for winemaking and fastidious attention to detail. “This shows particularly in the stunning single-vineyard chardonnays and pinots of Giant Steps: distinctive wines that reflect their sites and glow with impeccable finesse,” Mr Forrestal said. Tourist News put some questions to Steve at the landmark building that is Giant Steps winery, cellar door and restaurant in Healesville’s bustling East End. So, Steve ... what’s your story? We’re an independent small winery making Yarra Valley wines and single vineyard wines with a focus on chardonnay and pinot noir-syrah wines. What are three things you’d like people to know about your wines? They’re hand-made; we have the advantage of a cool climate here in the Yarra Valley; and making in small batches we create “more personality of wine”. 30 SPRING 2017

What excites you about this year’s vintage? It’s been a really good year; the weather has created slow, even ripening optimal conditions for making wines. What varieties are you particularly looking forward to bottling ... and tasting? Definitely our pinot noir and syrah. You’re a smaller winery ... who is on the Giant Steps winemaking team? We have three people in winemaking, myself as chief winemaker, Tony Fikkers and Bernie Morey, and five people in our vineyards. What do you love about living in the Yarra Valley? Love the climate, the diverse wine community and the great team of winemakers throughout the Valley. What are the top drops to enjoy in the cooler months? New release syrah and single vineyard pinots. Why do you think cellar doors are so inviting for tourists? The tasting experience and the unique menus to complement the wines. At Giant Steps it’s also the setting with our 1000 oak barrel room used for tastings and private functions. What can people learn from visiting a winery? It’s a great way to learn about wine, and about the story and people behind Giant Steps. What do you think is so special about the Yarra Valley wineries? DRINK IN THE BEAUTY

BY WENDY WILLIAMSON IT IS always the right season to sample the spectacular beauty of the Yarra Valley, but spring brings something special to this wine lovers’ paradise just one hour’s drive from the Melbourne CBD. Anyone looking for a cellar door to taste wine that is celebrated throughout the world will be spoilt for choice. Drive the highway, wander the back roads - there are vineyards as far as the eye can see, interspersed with orchards pretty with spring blossom. Drink in the beauty, then take your pick of places to pause. The Valley boasts award-winning wineries galore, most with a cellar door where you can enjoy an informed friendly tasting. While the region is famous for its chardonnay, sauvignon blanc and pinot noir, there’s also a stunning selection of sparkling wines and full-bodied reds to enjoy. What you can be sure of is intensity of flavour and superb quality. At many of the wineries you will be able to order a platter of the freshest local produce to graze on while you sip your wine. Some wineries feature splendid restaurants, where you can dine in comfort, perhaps beside a blazing fire if there is still a nip of winter in the air. In many cases you will find much to admire in the buildings themselves. The wineries range from gorgeous old buildings in the Tuscan or French provincial style to stunningly modern architectural creations, all soaring ceilings and sharp angles. Whichever cellar door you choose, you can be sure of one thing - a backdrop of the gorgeous Yarra Valley. It’s an ideal location in which to relax, taste some exquisite local produce and soak up the best that nature - and a talented vintner or two - has to offer.

WINE COUNTRY

DOORS OPEN ON SMALLER SECRETS BY KATH GANNAWAY SHEDFEST Wine Festival is the perfect time to discover for yourself the hidden secrets and pure delight of the smaller wineries of the Yarra Valley. The Yarra Valley is home to some of the most inviting smaller wineries in the region and Shedfest, held annually on the second weekend in October and now in its 16th year - was established to showcase the unique charm of family-owned wineries and vineyards in the Valley. Originally showcasing the Warburton Highway wineries, the success of Shedfest has led to the inclusion of smaller wineries from along the Maroondah Highway to Healesville and the Melba Highway to Yarra Glen and beyond. The result is a two-day festival, this year on 7 and 8 October, that provides a much wider festival experience and a broader experience of all the Yarra Valley’s smaller wineries have to offer. So, why SHEDfest? Well, all wineries have sheds. Usually they house crushers, barrels, tractors and other equipment vitally important to the production of fine wines. But, on Shedfest weekend, the shed doors are flung open and turned over to two days of food, fine wine, live music and entertainment.

It’s the type of festival where you can take it easy and enjoy the best that the Valley has to offer. Taste local produce, experience the charm of small vineyards, be captivated by stunning views, chat to the owners and winemakers, tap your toes to some fine tunes, play petanque, take croquet lessons, lawn games and watch the kids have fun, all while sipping delightful wines. Purchase your souvenir glass for just $15 ... it’s not only your ticket to taste all the wines on offer at all the participating wineries, it’s a great way of helping a local community group, CFA or SES with well over $30,000 raised since 2009 from the sale of glasses. There will be plenty of food on offer and moderately priced at all the wineries during the course of the day, you only have to decide where, when and what you want to eat. Once you are in the Yarra Valley you can use the map to pinpoint the wineries you would like to visit, so why not tempt yourself, your family and friends and come to the Yarra Valley and enjoy the Shedfest Wine Festival. For details visit www.yarravalleysmallerwineries.com.au/events/ shedfest-2017 Tokar Estate winemaker and vineyard manager Martin Siebert checks out the ‘shed’ ahead of Shedfest 2017. HOMESTEAD WHERE HISTORY COMES ALIVE TAKE a step back in time and discover what it was like to live in the 1800s on the spectacular 80-acre Wandin property known as ‘Mont De Lancey.’ Monte De Lancey founder Henry Sebire first came to Melbourne in 1850 from Guernsey in the Channel Islands. After working around Melbourne as a stone mason for about 17 years, he then took up the 80 acres of land in Wandin Yallock which would become the historical property known and loved today. He first built a temporary wooden house until his family became established, made the bricks from the clay on the property, built a kiln, and the homestead in the late 1880s. Several generations of the Sebire family have lived in the homestead until 1993, when the family donated it to a not-for-profit trust, which now is available for guided tours, wedding and other events. The property is entirely run by volunteers. The guided tours tell the history of the district and Mont De Lancey, which highlight the comparisons between a modern home and the pioneering

GARDENS ARE AN OPEN SECRET

Through the Secret Gardens, passionate garden lovers can experience first-hand a selection of beautiful, privately owned gardens throughout the Dandenong Ranges.

THE Secret Gardens of the Dandenong Ranges is opening the gates to some of the finest gardens in Melbourne. Passionate garden lovers will experience first-hand a selection of beautiful, privately owned gardens throughout the Dandenong Ranges, not normally accessible to the general public. A not-for-profit community event, the concept of The Secret Gardens of the Dandenong Ranges sprouted and grew through the dedicated work of the Dandenong Ranges Tourism Network. Their mission is to showcase the Dandenong Ranges as the premier garden region in Australia and a destination with a myriad of reasons for visitors to enjoy any day of the year. Now in its second year, the 2017 Secret Gardens of the Dandenong Ranges will offer a selection of day packages across October 12, 13 and 14, 20 and 21. Each package will showcase a range of four to five gardens, starting at Karwarra Australian Plant Garden and Nursery in Kalorama for morning tea, coffee and a short presentation on the history of gardens in the Dandenong Ranges. Guests then board a bus and tour through the hills to each garden destination with expert guide, Eddie Wasbutzki. Delightful picnic lunches with wine from local producers are provided in a selected garden each day and sometimes include a guest speaker or presentation. During the tour the stories behind notable private gardens are highlighted in casual presentations from garden owners themselves. The day is finished with Yarra Ranges sparkling wine and canapes back at Karwarra Australian Plant Garden and Nursery. This exclusive event offers only 50 places each day. Tickets are $135 plus booking fee for single-day packages and include transport, garden entry, meals and refreshments, with further discount available for multi-day bookings. OPEN DAYS ARE HEAVEN-SCENT BY KATH GANNAWAY FROM September through to November, Warratina Lavender Farm in Wandin Yallock is a bee-hive of activity. The farm started as a hobby for lavender enthusiast Annmarie Manders more than two decades ago, is now a thriving and exciting lavender experience all year round. The Warratina spring experience starts on 2 September when the earthy aroma of fresh wood shavings mixes with the sweet smelling lavender as Warratina hosts the annual Wood Working exhibition. Members of local woodturning groups will be demonstrating their craft and there will be wood items including furniture, salad bowls and beautiful decorative pieces for sale. The Wood Working exhibition runs through to 17 September.

From 14 to 22 October the Mount Evelyn and Yarra Valley Art Society Art Show takes over the drying shed at Warratina showcasing an extensive and diverse collection of works by talented local artists. Take the opportunity to view beautiful works of art in a unique ‘gallery’ and support local artists with a purchase. Return to Warratina in November when the focus is on the garden and the beautiful lavender. Enjoy strolling through the rows of lavender and wander around the original homestead gardens on Open Garden Weekend - 18 and 19 November. Craft demonstrations, stalls, music, lavender scones and ice-cream, a sausage sizzle and other entertainment will fill the weekend. The Open Garden and Wood Work events support the local CFA. SPRING GARDEN Superb Steavenson Falls. Right: Great views from Snob’s Creek Waterfall out of Rubicon. Picture: DELWP

THE SEASON WHEN FALLS AT THEIR BEST BY KATH GANNAWAY SPRING rains make for wonderful waterfalls. Walking along a picturesque forest path, often the first thing to excite your senses is the thunder of the water in the distance. Whether it’s huge volumes pounding down over towering cliffs or pounding rocks over a series of mini-falls before swirling into pools of crystal-clear water, the first sight of a waterfall, and the touch of fine mist on your face is magical. In the mountains throughout the region there are numerous of these natural wonders, some easily accessible, others requiring a bit more stamina, but all in amazing moss-covered, ferny glades or magnificent forest settings. Be sure to check out the topography before you head out, dress for the weather, get a good map, and if you’re heading into more remote bushland always let someone know where you’re heading and when you’ll be back. Oh ... and take your camera. Waterfalls are lens-magic.

SPRING RACING Racing up close at Healesville.

RACING THRILLS WITHOUT THE CROWDS BY PETER DOUGLAS WHO needs the hassle of getting to Flemington on race day when you can enjoy the picturesque surrounds of the Yarra Valley instead? This year, you can forgo the overcrowding of the city racetracks and experience the country racing carnival at its absolute best. Yarra Valley Racing has spectacular events organised at the Yarra Glen Racecourse for the biggest days of the racing calendar with Healesville Amateur Racing Club starting its spring/summer racing season with their Derby Day meeting. Among the big-day events planned for Yarra Glen this year are the Cox Plate Day at Yarra Valley Race Track on Saturday 24 October. Healesville’s relaxed atmosphere is perfect for Derby Day on 4 November leading up to the big one at Yarra Glen, the Yarra Valley Melbourne Cup Day on Tuesday 7 November. Just two days later will be the major Yarra Valley Pacing Cup Day on Oaks Day, Thursday 9 November. The Cox Plate event represents the perfect occasion to dust off your finest frock and enjoy some great company and a few glasses of top-notch Yarra Valley Chardonnay. The day will include a full event line-up, including Fashions on the Field, live music and a big range of dining, marquee and hospitality packages. Meanwhile, for the race that stops a nation, why not celebrate the nation’s biggest race Yarra Valley style.

In what is traditionally the ‘ultimate style day’, the blokes and ladies are encouraged to bring their ‘A-game’. Enjoy a full race-day program, on-stage music and catch all the Flemington action with the big race streamed live on the big screen. The action doesn’t finish there, though, with the crowds certain to be dressed to the nines for one of the club’s biggest annual harness events. Traditionally, this one goes off with a bang. Live bands will entertain the masses, while punters can grab themselves a chef-prepared picnic hamper. Custom-dining and hospitality packages are available. Fashions on the Field are back on Oaks Day and there is a huge range of dining and hospitality packages, as well as live music options. At Healesville, Derby Day embraces Spring Racing with marquees, picnic tables beneath the pin-oaks, live music and lots of free activities for the kids. A courtesy bus will run from Lilydale train station for the Yarra Glen meetings, so no need to worry about taking the car. There is no shortage of style, drama, or sophistication when it comes to race days in the Yarra Valley. Visit country.racing.com/yarra-valley for information on the Yarra Glen events and www.healesvilleraces.com.au for Derby Day and the summer program.

MARKETS

MAKE IT TO MARKET BY DEREK SCHLENNSTEDT IT’S very easy to hibernate in winter when all the outdoor events that got you out and about for the past few months are off the calendar ... and the sofa is extra comfy. Don’t succumb. Nobody wants to spend months with a grumpy hermit - with a Vitamin D deficiency.

12359473-PB35-17

Spring, it’s scientifically proven that spring is the most charming season, with lovely weather, beautiful blooming flowers and leaves, and delightful doses of warm Vitamin D, it really is the season to come out of the house and begin exploring. And as you make your first steps out of the house which you have hibernated in over winter, markets are the first on the list to explore ... and there is no shortage of interesting and diverse country markets around the hills and valleys It’s not all about the spend ... although a little retail therapy can also do amazing things to lift the spirits. It’s about getting out, discovering new places, unearthing new (or old) treasures, catching up with amazing artisans and craftspeople, finding that book you’ve always wanted to read (The Old Man and the Sea?), gathering fresh produce for a hearty soup, or just browsing, and who doesn’t love browsing?

Fresh produce, clothing, jewellery, homewares, and a wide range of food. Local, handmade, handcrafted, -grown and -baked with love from the artists, crafters, designers, seemstress’, builders, wood workers, potters, growers, cooks and artisans of the greater Warrandyte region and beyond

Throughout the region there is an abundance of markets to suit every niche from farmers’ markets selling gourmet produce, to community markets where everything from knitted baby clothes and baked biscuits to fresh seedlings for the garden, bric-a-brac, and second-hand books help raise funds for local groups. Commercial-type markets are also great value and very often have a greater array of stalls, including clothing and shoes to homewares. Farmers’ Markets too are becoming increasingly popular as awareness of the benefits of a healthy lifestyle grows.

Additional Christmas Market on December 16

First Saturday every month 8am to 1pm

If you have the luxury of a greenhouse, now is the perfect time to snap up seedlings and grow them on for a fabulous spring display.

Spring is also the perfect time for get the most delicious produce and fruit and veg and for very reasonable prices - the growers of course are always up for a chat and suggestions on how to cook their hand-raised produce.
