■ Family from Singapore drawn to high-tech school for...
World-class study By Casey Neill VIDEO LINK See Seth and his friends visit virtual reality at: dandenong.starcommunity.com.au
Seth at the computer with teacher Kieran Nolan. When the Journal visited, the school was conducting an immutable vote on how to spend some of the cash. Mr Nolan said that rather than making a decision himself, each class could vote on what they thought was worth the investment. “Everything on the list is stuff that the kids came up with,” he said. “I expected it to be wacky stuff but it was all cutting-edge.” He set up a voting system online using blockchain, which is the premise behind bitcoin. Mr Nolan said it distributed secure pieces of information to different computers rather than relying on centralised data storage. “That data belongs to someone else and they can delete it at any time,” he said. “This technology means that can’t happen.” A 3D printer was in the lead, ahead of virtual reality, drones and robotics.
Seth, Immanuel and Hassan delve into virtual reality.

An online search for the world’s best school led a Singapore father to bring his son to Dandenong North. Now eight-year-old Seth is not only excelling in his studies at Wooranna Park Primary School, he’s teaching other students. Principal Ray Trotter said people remembered only a small portion of what they saw and heard. “We remember 95 per cent of what we teach,” he said. “You need to activate for it to stick. “If I tell you that you know things that other people want to know, it builds your self-esteem.” He said teaching coding to other students many older than him - was building Seth’s confidence and social skills. “And to introduce all of our children to the digital world is absolutely crucial now,” Mr Trotter said. “What Kieran is doing is way out there.” Teacher Kieran Nolan started his working life in network engineering, which took him into schools about 10 years ago. Then Wooranna Park was looking for “a computer geek”. His role really took off after he provided a gifted student with books in CISCO - networking - to learn from at home. “The other kids wanted to do it, too,” Mr Nolan said. “They started building virtual networks and then physical networks.” He’d provided them with an old switch and server. They wanted to add a router to the mix but there was no budget for it. Mr Nolan had a family friend who needed help with a virus on his computer. “I had no time but I told him I had some really smart kids,” he said. “They got his data back and got paid $100 for it and bought a router. “It’s sort of been organic from there.” Andrew Kwan is a US-based software developer who mined online currency bitcoin in the early days. He’s been to 200 schools across America, Mr Nolan said, and someone from the Blockchain Centre suggested he check out Wooranna Park. About eight months ago he did just that and told Mr Nolan it was the best school he’d ever seen. He gifted 21 bitcoins, worth about $30,000 at the time, to further boost the school’s technology offering.

Future the focus of China deal By Victoria Stone-Meadows Health, tourism, agriculture, innovation and education will be the focus points of Casey council’s ongoing relationship with Dujiangyan City of inland Sichuan Province of China. The council passed a recommendation to adopt a China engagement strategy without discussion at their meeting on Tuesday 15 August. The newly adopted strategy will see Casey Council bolstering relationships with Dujiangyan City in these areas and encouraging investment in the region by their Chinese counterpart. The strategy was drafted following Mayor Sam Aziz and Cr Wayne Smith’s visit to China in April to establish an economic partnership with a Chinese sister city. The most tangible changes brought about by the strategy will be on the innovation stage with Casey council committing to working hand-inhand with Chinese tech companies to bring their
business to the region. As part of this strategy, council will create a Casey Cardinia Account on WeChat - the most widely used social media application in China - to engage prospective investment from Dujiangyan City in a familiar environment. The Casey-Cardinia Business Hub will have a dedicated China desk to assist local businesses in dealing with language, cultural and business barriers. Casey council will also establish a dedicated Chinese language investment portal that will provide information and assistance to help stakeholders secure investments in the region. The council’s China Engagement Strategy will inform ongoing development at the Berwick Health and Education Precinct that incorporates the new St John of God Hospital, Chisholm TAFE, and Federation University. The strategy will also encourage representatives from the precinct to be involved in any future trade missions made by the council to China
and is included in the itinerary for any visiting Chinese delegates. Federation University will also play a major part in the council’s relationship with Dujiangyan City by providing Chinese-focused courses and partnerships. Included in the strategy is the forming of an official partnership between Federation University and a Chengdu-based university to support language and cultural courses in local schools and community learning facilities. Casey council will also audit schools in the Casey-Cardinia region to assess levels of Chinese language teaching as part of the strategy. The focus around agribusiness in the strategy will see the council actively assisting local food exporters to take advantage of export opportunities to their Chinese partner. The main focus of the China Engagement Strategy in this space will have council assisting Casey-based food businesses to navigate Chinese export rules and regulations.
Casey council has outlined a whole host of ways to encourage more tourism and sport from China into the Casey Cardinia Region in the strategy. A Lantern Festival for City of Casey to be held in the first week of October is set to be the centrepiece of the council’s tourism focus of the strategy. The council will look to partner with established tourist attractions such as the Botanic Gardens in Cranbourne, Puffing Billy and the soonto-be-revamped Gumbuya Park to specifically attract tourism from China. It will also look into utilising Casey Fields as a resource for Chinese sports teams in their offseasons and look at sporting exchange programs for athletes between Casey and Dujiangyan City. Further to its own China Engagement Strategy, Casey council has also committed to working closely with State and Federal governments into the future to establish closer economic ties to China.
Works milestone but delays go on The Monash Freeway upgrade has hit a major milestone but there’s more disruption ahead. The final beams were lifted into place to widen bridges along the thoroughfare, over Dandenong Creek. Eight bridges have been widened using 73 concrete beams that weigh up to 82 tonnes each. Over the coming weeks, motorists will also experience some delays as concrete is poured at the bridges over Dandenong Creek and Eumemmerring Creek. During this time, the speed will be reduced to 40 kilometres an hour for 48 hours at each bridge to allow the concrete to set with minimal vibration. The Monash Freeway is being widened by an extra lane in each direction between EastLink and Clyde Road to increase capacity. It’s due to be completed next year.

20 years ago 1 September 1997 Designing women Talented dressmaker Mrs Pat McDonald, 69, has been plying her trade for 50 years in Dandenong. Two articles in the Journal have prompted Mrs McDonald to turn back the clock. One was of Mrs Vera Edwards in the bouffant pink tulle ball gown with she wore many years ago in the Dandenong Town Hall when
she took out the coveted Belle Of Belles title. The other was about the 93rd birthday of Mrs Marie Prendergast. “I helped make Vera’s gown which we literally all worked on at the time,” she said. “We worked at the shop in Vanity Fair and Mrs Prendergast, who owned the shop, was my boss. “Mr Stan Prendergast built Vanity Court and Mrs Prendergast’s boutique and dress making salon was opposite the town hall at the front of the arcade in Lonsdale Street. “That is why Vera literally stitched into her gown, had such a short distances to go to face the judges. “Mrs Prendergast used to design and cut out all her gowns with, their eye catching grace and style.” Over the decades Mrs McDonald made hundreds of debutante gowns, evening gowns, cocktail gowns, wedding gowns, and
bridesmaid gowns. Her bridal album is a mannequin parade of fashions through the eras that reveals “nothing in the fashion world is really new under the sun”. She made gowns for many of Dandenong’s elite, including the wives of MPs, doctors and pharmacists and mayoresses. Mrs McDonald did her training at the Emily McPherson College of Domestic Economy and started making dresses for dolls at the age of 10.

Chipping away Freemason history What’s in a Name delves into the fascinating stories and personalities behind some of the city’s bestknown street names and locations. This week the Journal looks at the new Freemasons Lane. Freemasons Lane came to be through the Revitalising Central Dandenong project. It runs off Mason Street, near the Masonic Hall. Greater Dandenong councillors gave the green light to its name in February after receiving positive community feedback on the idea, including a 117-signature petition. It recognises the 1923-built Masonic Hall’s community, social and architectural significance and strong links to Dandenong’s history. Freemasons Victoria Grand Master Don Reynolds said markers that acknowledged the past in a changing urban environment provided future generations with an opportunity to gain knowledge of a local area’s history, adding to the quality of the social environment.
WHAT’S IN A
NAME The 1919 Dandenong township plan shows a cottage on Lot 12, the site where the Masonic Hall is now built. No documentation could be located on the date of its demolition. The history of the Masonic Lodge started in 1876 when the Lodge of Sincerity was consecrated. The first meeting to consider forming the Lodge of Free and Acceptable Masons was held on 3 September 1876 but the lodge was closed in 1881.

On 16 August 1924 a ceremony of dedication was held and the foundation stone was unveiled. In 1991 the Dandenong Masonic Temple as well as those in Springvale, Mordialloc and Chelsea closed and amalgamated to use a new building in Keysborough. In 1992 the building was used by the Recycle Workshop and by September 1996, Mick and Rosa Valenti had acquired the building. In December 1996 they leased the building to the Spanish Christian Church for three years with Guillermo Esquivell as the Senior Minister. The building is now vacant. Greater Dandenong Council will transform the space into an art gallery.

It wasn’t until 1896 that re-opening the lodge was considered. Members from the original lodge joined this new Lodge of Sincerity and brought with them regalia, furniture and money. It was consecrated on 24 August 1896 and meetings were held monthly at the lodge room of the Mechanics Institute at the Shire Offices. In December 1907 members decided to set aside part of the membership dues and initiation fees to build a Masonic Temple. In the 1920s the lodge was struggling for space due to a large increase in memberships and on 7 September 1922 the lodge held a meeting to discuss the possibility of building. A contract was entered with Brother G Snell to have plans and specifications drawn up for the cost of £2800. Tenders were called and a building contract was signed with Brother N A Taylor for the total sum of £2530. The building was completed in 1923, with all

No and low-interest loans could be helping 35,000 people in the Greater Dandenong area. Dandenong’s Good Money store celebrated its fifth anniversary on Monday 21 August. Since opening in 2012, the Lonsdale Street site has provided nearly $3 million in safe and affordable loans to people on low incomes. Good Shepherd Microfinance CEO Adam Mooney said a partnership between Good Shepherd Microfinance, the State Government and National Australia Bank (NAB) brought the concept to life. “We know around 35,000 people in the Greater Dandenong area would be eligible to access the No Interest Loan Scheme (NILS) through Good Money,” he said. “That loan could be used for vital whitegoods, medical treatment, a computer or school supplies which can make a significant difference to a person’s life. “Good Money is a better alternative for people who are struggling to pay for things like furniture, washing machines and fridges.” Mr Mooney said a rental contract for a $550 washing machine could cost more than $2000 over four years of repayments. “But through NILS you don’t pay a single cent more than the purchase price,” he said. Dandenong woman Rachel Adams is a single mother on a disability pension. “There’s no savings,” she said. But through Good Money she’s bought two couches, a bed, a computer, a fridge and a washing machine. “It’s just fantastic and I hope they stay around forever,” she said. Ms Adams said using credit cards to buy such items could land people in a debt cycle. “I had to declare bankruptcy because I got credit cards,” she said. “That’s how I discovered the NILS program. “I couldn’t get any credit because I’d declared bankruptcy. “Even to buy a second-hand washing machine it was like $250, but they break down so fast you need to come up with the money again and you
Police are appealing for video footage from the public following an assault on a Pakenham man outside Dandenong Hospital. Greater Dandenong CIU investigators are looking into the circumstances of an affray outside the David Street hospital about 3.30pm on Tuesday 22 August. A 47-year-old man suffered minor injuries during the incident and was released from hospital after observation. Police declined to speak further on what exactly took place. Investigators are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident or has CCTV or mobile phone footage to come forward. A Monash Health spokeswoman said the incident occurred outside the hospital, and police were handling the matter. Call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 with any information.
Isaacs MP Julian Hill, Good Money general manager Corrine Proske and Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams at the celebration. may as well have bought a new one to start with. “I definitely tell everybody about it.” Ms Adams said her daughter turned to Good Money to buy a pram, and her mother and son had also used the service. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said strong communities needed to be financially resilient. “People in Dandenong are using Good Money to access loans to buy a new fridge, to pay for car registration or repairs, or to buy a washing machine,” she said. “These are essential items that enable people to get around and support their families.”
Bruce MP Julian Hill said the Good Money store in Dandenong was a welcome addition to the local shopping strip. “It’s easy to see that Good Money has the potential to reach many more locals in our community,” he said. “Residents who need a small loan can call the store or drop by and have a chat with the customer service team and it makes sense to check this option out. “Sometimes it’s hard to talk about money but I’ve found the team really friendly. “They provide information and referrals without any judgement.”

This underweight greyhound was seized from a property in Casey in 2015.
Accepting Enrolments By Victoria Stone-Meadows Casey has an animal abuse problem according to the RSPCA, whose statistics show the area is the second-highest in the state for animal cruelty reports. In the 2016-’17 financial year, 435 reports of animal cruelty were made to the RSPCA in the City of Casey out of the 10,180 across the state. The only local government area with more reports of animal cruelty in the 2016-’17 financial year was Greater Geelong with 584 reports. Included in the reports from the Casey area were 199 reports of animals with insufficient food, water or shelter and 136 concerns about hygiene, grooming and housing conditions. Other reports made to the RSPCA about animals in Casey were about underweight animals, sick or injured animals not receiving vet treatment, animals being beaten or wounded and abandoned animals. According to the RSPCA both the City of Casey and Greater Geelong had 69 reports of animals being beaten, wounded, tormented or otherwise terrified. Dogs, cats and horses were found to be the animals most likely to be abused or mistreated in the Casey area. 2016-’17 statistics show 255 of the reports
from Casey involved dogs and puppies, 64 involved cats and kittens and 67 involved horses. The City of Casey had only marginally improved in animal welfare from the 2015-’16 financial year, when the region had the highest number of reports in the state. CEO of RSPCA Victoria Dr Liz Walker said more owners were reported to the RSPCA for not meeting their animals’ basic needs than any other concern. “It’s disappointing to see that, for the second year in a row, too many Victorian animals were reported to us because of concerns about very basic issues,” she said. “Food, water, shelter and vet care when they’re sick or injured; these kinds of problems are so preventable.” However, Dr Walker said a majority of the cases bought to the RSPCA are quickly resolved after a visit from their inspectors. “Concerns reported to us are quickly resolved by our Inspectors educating the owner or person in charge of the animals involved, and reminding them of their legal obligations to care for their animals,” she said. “This year, RSPCA Victoria has started working more closely with local councils to understand local animal welfare issues, and to put in place tailored local initiatives to educate owners and better protect animals.”

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST In Brief Auto supply chain moves on
Laiba and Zoann from Noble Park Secondary College with South East Water graduate engineer Marzieh Lotfollahi at South East Water’s Frankston headquarters as part of the Women in the Pipeline work experience program.
Girls get into the flow of water career options By Casey Neill Noble Park students are partnering with South East Water to guide a steady stream of girls into STEM careers. The Women in the Pipeline program is a first for the water authority and is encouraging female students at Noble Park Secondary College to consider jobs in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM). Two students from the college completed a work experience program. “The girls thoroughly enjoyed their time there and will reflect on it as a positive experience to help them make decisions towards their future careers,” Noble Park Secondary College careers and VET co-ordinator Sandra Vaina said. She said South East Water’s Shellie Watkins was one of the speakers who were invited to the school’s Future Pathways Expo. “The students were totally captivated by her honesty and sincerity about her journey towards her current career,” she said.
South East Water education officer Mandy McDonald said a group of VCE chemistry students toured the Mount Martha Water Recycling Plant. She said more than 40 per cent of the organisation’s employees worked in engineering, science and technical roles. “STEM skills are crucial to our ability to deliver safe, reliable water and wastewater services,” she said. “South East Water’s Women in the Pipeline program enables us to take traditionally male careers into secondary schools and promote them to female students.” Ms McDonald said two thirds of children aged nine to 11 who were asked to draw a scientist drew a man. “We need to remove the bias and stereotyping, and show that it’s fine to see a woman with steel cap boots, a hard hat, overalls and a high-vis vest taking water samples at water treatment plant, and providing analytical data to our teams,” she said. “We want to demonstrate that the water in-
dustry provides excellent career opportunities for females as well as males. “Noble Park Secondary College is similarly committed to getting girls excited about roles that may be traditionally thought of as male, so we naturally wanted to work with them.” Ms McDonald hopes the students will develop a deeper understanding about particular STEM careers and appreciate that opportunities in these fields are inclusive to all, irrespective of gender. “It’s also about thinking anything is possible. Career pathways are rarely linear so if you really want a career in something, consider both traditional and non-traditional ways to get there,” she said. “It’s ultimately about widening our talent pool to ensure that we are securing the absolute best talent to work in our industry. “We want to employ high performing people - regardless of gender or culture - who are truly passionate about our vision of healthy water for life so that we can deliver the best outcomes for our customers and community.”
The opportunities and challenges in manufacturing will be the key theme of the Transforming Manufacturing Industry Forum at the Drum Theatre on Tuesday 12 September. The free event will demonstrate how automotive supply chain businesses are transitioning into new industry sectors like rail, defence, specialty vehicle manufacturing, building and construction, as well as embracing global market opportunities. Speakers will also highlight new opportunities for the automotive sector through new business models, innovation and diversification. There’ll be a morning of case study presentations followed by an afternoon of workshops on future trends in manufacturing. Registration starts at 8.30am and the event concludes at 5.30pm following a networking function. Industry and Employment Minister Wade Noonan will provide the opening address. Morning speakers will include Robert Bosch Australia president Gavin Smith, Nissan Casting Australia managing director Peter Jones, Holden Special Vehicles managing director Tim Jackson, Nitto Denko Australia managing director Michael Finn, MtM managing director Mark Albert, Venture DMG CEO Dean Lomas and Prodrive Racing Australia CEO Rod Nash. There’ll be question and answer panel sessions with these speakers. South East Melbourne Manufacturers Alliance (SEMMA) executive officer Adrian Boden will launch the afternoon sessions, which will feature speakers from CSIRO, Swinburne, Industry Capability Network (Victoria) and more. Visit sep12forum.eventbrite.com.au to register for individual or multiple sessions. For more information, call Rozi Parisotto on 9938 0115 or email rozi.parisotto@ecodev.vic.gov.au. The Drum Theatre is at the Lonsdale and Walker street intersection in Dandenong.
Connecting with job seekers Dandenong companies took part in a fair to connect jobseekers with job opportunities. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams launched the Melbourne South-East Jobs Fair in Caulfield on Friday 17 August. Among the 47 companies involved were 10 from Dandenong - Adecco, Mission Australia, Skilinvest, Skills Plus/AMES, The Bridge Employment, Ventura Bus, Bar Crusher Boats, Chromaflo Technologies, Extrusion Profiles Australia and Jayco. About 4100 jobseekers, including auto industry workers, attended to hear about 1900 job vacancies. They got to speak to exhibitors, including Victoria Police, Department of Human Services and the Level Crossing Removal Authority to learn about local job and training opportunities. Participants also received information and attended sessions on resume writing and developing strategies for finding a job that suits their skills. “Dandenong is proudly one of the nation’s biggest manufacturing hubs. “There are jobs out there.”

Kitchen helps with daily bread By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Narre Warren soup kitchen has a unique perspective on life on the fringes of the world’s most liveable city. While Melbourne basks in the sought-after honour bestowed by The Economist magazine, Transit Soup Kitchen’s Keith Vethaak says life isn’t so liveable for many families hit by soaring rents and power costs. “If mortgage rates go up, it will be disastrous for a lot of families. “People are right on the limit.” He tells of a single mum living with seven kids in a van for the past 12 months. “She was told (by Department of Housing) they didn’t have a house big enough for them,” Mr Vethaak says. “You’d think a three-bedroom house would be better than living in a car.” Mr Vethaak has referred several recent families who’ve fled their homes due to domestic violence. They have also been living in cars for weeks. Mr Vethaak and his tireless, cheery band of 100 volunteers help feed more than 1100 registered families with hot meals as well as fresh groceries. That equates to about 3000 people seeking help, Mr Vethaak says. More than 40 new families strapped by living costs have joined that list in the past month. They include refugees and migrants from a diverse range of religions and nations. “The demand is enormous,” Mr Vethaak says. “And I’m expecting that will keep on growing.” There is a growing cohort of working families feeling the pinch, including contractors whose work dries up. Mr Vethaak hears of the shame of a truckie who said he could not feed his family and tried to hang himself. They get referred to him by Centrelink, doctors, police as well as schools with students skipping essential meals. “There’s a huge number who don’t have breakfast and lunch. “We later find out the family has to pay the rent, mortgage or electricity bills and there’s
Transit volunteers Gerard Ferron, Koula Vavasis, Keith Vethaak and Dot O’Neill. 171910 Pictures: CAM LUCADOU-WELLS just no money for food.” It cooks or gives away about three tonnes of food a week, sourced from the charities Second Bite and Avocare as well as generous local supermarkets, market gardens and bakeries. On Thursdays, the hall turns into a food market stocked with tonnes of fruit, vegetables, canned food, cereals and dairy. About 80 families are greeted heartily and
made to feel welcome as they collect a week’s worth of food. It makes you wonder what would happen if Transit Soup Kitchen wasn’t their safety net. Mr Vethaak doesn’t have an answer. “It’s really, really tough especially in this area.” Donations and volunteers are welcome to Transit Soup Kitchen. If you can help, call 0438 398 594.
Groceries volunteer Dot O’Neill says she helps to give back to the community. 171910

29 JOURNAL NEWS Monday, 4 September, 2017
SPORT Could’a, would’a, but just didn’t With the local football finals well and truly underway for many local sides, there are other clubs who now get the chance to ponder what went wrong as they watch on from the sidelines. In the Journal’s football wash-up, NICK CREELY takes a closer look at how the season panned out for the teams who missed out on coveted finals positions. SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 SPRINGVALE DISTRICTS POSITION: 10th (6-12) BEST WIN: The Demons defeated finalists Skye in a five-point thriller at home in Round 9, 12.6 (78) to 11.7 (73). After trailing by 14-points at three quarter time, the Demons stormed home off the back of four goals by Stefan Feehan. LEADING GOAL KICKER: Stefan Feehan (42) B&F CANDIDATES: Todd Wills, Matthew Thompson, Tom Cooper COMMENTS: 2017 was always destined to be another tough season for the developing club, but they managed to win one more match than they did last year. In a major positive, they were competitive in every game bar one against premiership favourites Chelsea Heights despite finishing second last. With a little more luck, who knows what they can achieve. DIVISION 3 LYNDALE POSITION: 7th (9-9) BEST WIN: Can’t go past the Round 1, 163-point demolition of Sandown at home, in which the Pumas were clinical with 44 scoring shots. LEADING GOAL KICKER: Trevor Kumetaitis (65) B&F CANDIDATES: Jordan Toole, Liam Toole, Trevor Kumetaitis COMMENTS: Despite having finals ambitions heading into the season, the reality is the Pumas couldn’t better their 10-8 record of 2016. Despite a mountain of goals from Kumetaitis and some handy inclusions such as former Cora Lynn pair Jordan and Liam Toole, they were unable to capture a finals spot. But it wasn’t a complete disappointment, with some terrific performances at different stages of the season. LYNDHURST POSITION: 8th (7-11) BEST WIN: A ripping Round 4 win over finalists Black Rock away from home by three-points was one of the highlights of the season for the Lightning. After a tight affair all day, the Lightning pulled away in a three goal to two final term. LEADING GOAL KICKER: Hamish Browning (37) B&F CANDIDATES: Charlie Gardiner, Matthew Spargo, Cory Willshire COMMENTS: Improvement was the key going into the season, and improvement is what they got. They had more wins and fewer losses than last year, so the developing club is tracking well. If they can attract some more experienced talent, they have every opportunity to surge into the finals in 2018. SANDOWN POSITION: 11th (1-17) BEST WIN: The club’s only win of the year came against Dandenong by six-points at home. It was a great day for the struggling club who are doing everything they can to rebuild. LEADING GOAL KICKER: Jamie Proctor (11) B&F CANDIDATES: Matthew Dickson, Josh Hurford, Lucas Ligt COMMENTS: The Cobras - under new coach Ange Sammaratino - have certainly freshened things up, and it was unlikely they would be able to be competitive for some time. Although they climbed off the bottom of the ladder, three 200-plus losses suggests they haven’t quite bridged the gap. They conceded the most points by almost 400 and scored the least amount of points. The talent is there, it’s now up to them to take the next step. 30 JOURNAL NEWS Monday, 4 September, 2017

DANDENONG POSITION: 12th (0-18) BEST WIN: The Redlegs failed to win a game in 2017, but came within six-points of Sandown in a bottom-of-the-table thriller. Failed to get that close in a match again. LEADING GOAL KICKER: David Barrie (17) B&F CANDIDATES: Stephen Young, Scott Moody, Bo Freeman COMMENTS: Despite not being the worst side statistically, the Redlegs won three in 2016 and none in 2017 so the season hasn’t been successful at all. Nothing quite worked all season and Dandenong was competitive in very few matches. The team needs to find more experience while the youngsters develop. The list is inexperienced so the turnaround isn’t going to be easy. EASTERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE NOBLE PARK POSITION: 7th (10-8) BEST WIN: The Bulls dispatched premiership fancy Balwyn by 37-points in their own backyard, and made them look second rate. It proved to be the last win they had for the season with the Bulls failing to qualify for finals after losing their last two matches. Their incredible record away from home against Balwyn continues into another season. LEADING GOAL KICKER: Tim Harper (36) B&F CANDIDATES: Kyle Martin, Tim Harper, Jackson Sketcher COMMENTS: The reality is that the Bulls entered the 2017 season as one of a bunch of clubs who could contend for a premiership after finishing fourth in 2016. But they failed to fire in the second half of the season and subsequently couldn’t find the momentum to find a spot in the finals. They possess a uniquely talented list but one that underperformed most of the season. The inconsistency would be the biggest concern for the coaching staff and players. But there were great seasons from the likes of Kyle Martin, Tim Harper, James Gwilt, Jackson Sketcher and the development of highly prized former TAC Cup star Tommy Glen means a bounce back is very possible.
Sandown had another tough season, but climbed off the bottom of the ladder. 154246 ROWVILLE POSITION: 10th (5-13) BEST WIN: A fantastic win over finalists South Croydon by 22 points only a matter of weeks ago was the Hawks’ best win of the season. They managed to kick an impressive 108 points in their biggest scalp. LEADING GOAL KICKER: Lachlan McDonald (26) B&F CANDIDATES: Daniel Zajac, Steven Georgiou, Jordan Bastinac COMMENTS: Rowville finished in the top three in 2016, and then the bottom three this season. Despite having a talented list, they were arguably the biggest underperformer of the year. They can easily bounce back next season, but need to work on maximising the talent they have.

Big dance just one step away By Nick Creely JOURNAL FOOTBALL REVIEW SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 - QUALIFYING FINAL Keysborough is inching one step closer to an inspired first premiership in the Southern Football League after dispatching Caulfield to the tune of 28-points at Meade Reserve on Saturday, 13.7(85) to 8.9(57). Coming in as warm favorites, with a host of stars in top touch, the Burra wasted no time in stamping their very powerful authority, putting the game away with an absolute clinical first quarter. After the Bears kicked the game’s opening major, only minutes into the contest, a bag of Timmy Werner goals within just two minutes of eachother got the ball rolling, with the Burras slamming on another four unanswered goals to hold a lead of 32-points at quarter time. With young Sandringham Dragon star Jacob Bakes (two goals), Jake D’Atri and Daniel Morland helping fill the void left by champion midfielder Ryan Goodes (jaw), the Bears couldn’t close in on the deficit in the second and third quarters, with the Burra kicking seven goals to four to further stamp its dominance, before taking the foot off the pedal in a lackluster final term. But it was the brilliant Werner who once again turned heads, pulling out yet another brilliant best afield performance in a win even more impressive considering Chris Bryan missed for personal reasons. Burras coach Matt Ferguson was thrilled with the brilliant first quarter from his side, but said the focus is now well and truly on their next opponents, a red-hot Chelsea Heights who have tasted defeat just three times this season. “We really built ourselves up for a strong start, we have been the best first-quarter side this year so we focused on doing what had worked throughout the year,” he said. “We are confident our best footy is good
Keysborough marched through to a second semi-final showdown against Chelsea Heights with an electric win over Caulfield on Saturday. enough but we respect Chelsea Heights strengths which are many,” Ferguson said. “We go in as underdogs but will give it a red hot crack.” DIVISION 3 - SECOND SEMI FINAL Finals always bring out the best in teams and Endeavour Hills may just be this year’s true contender in a wide open premiership race. Extraordinarily, the Eagles pulled off one of
their greatest wins in recent memory, knocking off dominant minor premier Hallam in a stunning performance that now sees them advance to the grand final, 7.5(47) to 9.9(63). The hot-starting Hawks banged through four first quarter goals to lead by nine-points at quarter time, before a brilliant team defensive unit held the competition’s most powerful attacking side to just 23-points in the final three quarters to

seal a huge momentum booster. Midfielder Daniel Batson was instrumental in yet another win for the Eagles, while Manny Peresso did all he could to revive a Hallam side that must now bounce back in next week’s preliminary final. The Doveton Eagles and Ashwood played off in the other semi final on Sunday, after the Journal went to print.
Versatility the key as Dundee Calypso moves into Speed Star calculations Dundee Calypso rounded out her Speed Star preparations with a brilliant win at Sandown Park last Thursday night. Drawn favourably in box two, Dundee Calypso began well and was soon in pursuit of early leaders She’s Got Grace and Lektra Forrest. It wasn’t long before she made her presence felt howver, leveling up to She’s Got Grace before running home the better to win by two lengths in 34.17. “Once she drew near the fence she was a big chance. I didn’t expect her to go that quick but I know she’s more than capable of it, just hasn’t done it for a while,” said Pakenham South trainer Geoff Scott-Smith post race. Dundee Calypso is renowned for her consistency and versatility, having won or placed in 19 of her 26 starts over all three distances at the track. She will now head towards next Sunday’s Speed Star, greyhound racing’s most exciting format made up of match races that will ventually decide the winner. For the first time matches will held over all three distances Speed Star (515m), Galactic Diamond (595m) and Stayers Challenge (715m), with Dundee Calypso’s versatility providing ScottSmith with a headache or two over the coming days as he decides on the best option for his star.
Dundee Calypso rounded out her Speed Star preparations with a brilliant run last Thursday at Sandown Park. Dundee Calypso’s time escalated her to fourth on the Galactic Diamond (595m) standings. She’s also eligible for the Stayers Challenge (715m) which opens up two options for Scott-Smith come the time of nomination. “I’m not sure which way we’ll go,“ he said. “She’d be a good chance in either of them though, she can break 42 (seconds) over 715m.”
Scott-Smith is no stranger to the Speed Star series having won the feature event last year with champion greyhound Dundee Osprey. Later in the night dual group-1 winner Lightning Frank won in just his second start since returning from a serious achilles tendon injury. His winning time of 29.55 took him to 22nd on the Speed Star (515m) standings. Trainer Matt Wright said he will consider next Sunday’s Speed Star for Lightning Frank, who has needed some tender loving care since his injury concerns. “We are going to wait and see how he pulls up then make a decision,“ Wright said. “After his injury we take extra care during his recovery. Speed Star is definitely something we’ll think about. He’s very happy to be back racing which is the main thing!” Speed Star will take place on Sunday 10 September and will be a truly packed evening both on and off the track with plenty of entertainment throughout the night.. Be there for your chance to win a Ford Mustang, receive free giveaways and enjoy a live band, plus after party. Eight greyhounds attempted to trial their way into Speed Star calculations on Sunday 3 September.

Golden boy’s got his boots on By Nick Creely If one thing is for certain, it’s that Dandenong Thunder striker Brandon Barnes is going to strive in the NPL’s top tier in 2018. There is perhaps no striker currently not at an A-League club who is having a more profound impact on the soccer landscape of the south-east. After an astonishing 40 goals in 25 matches last season, Barnes took out the NPL2 Victoria best-and-fairest last year as well as the Golden Boot as the competition’s leading scorer and the Player’s Player award in recognition of his fine work by opponents and teammates. And if all goes to script - and it should - he is likely to walk away with the same awards this season. With talk continually ramping up about the south-east obtaining an A-League licence, Barnes’ form continues to go to another level. He has scored another 35 goals this season making it 75 in his last 53 games - more than 30 goals ahead of the next best striker in any of the three NPL divisions. Despite perhaps not being as ruthless as previous seasons, Barnes’ consistency shone brightest with just nine scoreless matches. But the scary part of it all for opposition goalkeepers and defenders in the NPL is that Barnes believes he can only get better. “I look back on this season, and I’m probably a bit harsh on myself, but I’m not really happy with how I’ve done - I’ve had a bit of a target that I’ve kept to myself this year and I’m a little bit off at the minute,” Barnes told the Journal in a recent interview. “I feel like my form has not dropped, but I haven’t got to where I’d like it to be - I’ve obviously had a baby recently so I’ve had a few things on my mind there. “But I’m obviously the top goal scorer by about 10 goals even though I’m not in the best form which probably shows a lot, so I’m still doing what I can for the boys.”

“If they tick all the criteria and get that licence, I’ll be banging on their door and try and be a part of it,” he said. “Around this area, football is constantly getting bigger and bigger - that’s why I reckon the A-League licence could sway towards this area,
Although his main focus is lifting the Thunder to glory in the club’s exciting push into the top tier in 2018, Barnes himself admits he would do anything to earn a professional contract if the south-east does indeed earn a licence to play in the A-League.
just because of how many clubs are in the area - it would bring a lot of youth and a lot positive things to the area.” The Thunder - which is the 2017 NPL2 East champion - is set to put rest up in this off-season as it gears up for a tilt with the big boys.

The Ford Mustang is a contrary car: beloved of Baby Boomers yearning for a re-run of a misspent youth; or 14-year-old schoolboys fuelled by raging hormones wishing they could own one. Wrong. Having spent time with a new ‘Pony 34’, (it's rego number) most interesting was the appeal of the red GT Fastback shown by young adult females, snapping selfies and sitting behind the wheel, perhaps dreaming of cruising Rodeo Drive. Mustang’s impact goes well beyond the nine million-plus cars sold in its 50 years of continuous production. The latest iteration comes in two versions, Fastback (coupe) and Convertible, powered by either a 5.0-litre V8 or four-cylinder 2.3-litre EcoBoost turbo-petrol engine. The former a nod to the 20th century gas guzzling muscle machines, the latter Ford’s gift to environmentally conscious modern motoring. As the maker says, no Mustang engine lineup would be complete without a great V8 engine at its core. So our test vehicle was a 5.0-litre V8 Fastback with six-speed manual gearbox, notably with Race Red paint, the most popular Mustang colour. The new Mustang has a muscular, long bonnet, shark nose and signature rear lights. A chromed ‘pony’ in full flight takes pride of place at the centre of the radiator grille. The cockpit, says Ford, carries an aircraft theme with a plain design for instruments and controls. A high-resolution 8.0-inch colour touch screen presents information including satellite navigation. Seats are laterally supportive but lack of rear legroom has the Mustang deep in 2+2 territory. However, the added width and a new rear suspension make for more shoulder and hip room for rear-seat passengers, and a more usefully shaped boot that can accommodate two golf bags. Cargo space can be improved by folding the rear seat backs, but the Mustang has not been able to throw off the titchy boot opening, which limits the ability to transport even medium-size luggage. One major beef: positioning of the 8.0-inch colour touch screen low on the central dash means the driver has to take their eyes off the road for longer than with high-set screens found in many other vehicles. The 2017 Mustang has Ford's SYNC 3 system that features Apple Carplay, Android Auto and Ford Applink 3.0. It offers increased functionality and improved responsiveness, depending on the user’s mobile connection. Mustang GT continues with the latest edition of the deep-throated 5.0-litre V8, featuring an upgraded valve-train and cylinder heads that help boost output to 306 kW of power and 530 Nm of torque. Active safety includes Ford-developed stability control system, which is tuned to make the best of Mustang’s dynamic capabilities. In case of the unexpected, debuting in the Mustang is an Emergency Assistance as standard. A front passenger knee airbag is part of a standard comprehensive safety system that includes a more robust package of sensors and seatbelt anchor pretensioners. Mustang only gained two stars (out of five) when tested by ANCAP. Six-speed manual transmission provides smoother shifting than previous Mustangs. However, the changes are pretty heavy and almost cumbersome at times. An optional a short-throw shift-kit for the sixspeed manual Mustang is there for driving enthusiasts. With a Ford Performance gear knob, the kit reduces throw distance by 19 per cent for swifter gear changes. The well-sorted Mustang GT suspension ironed out some pretty ropey roads on a drive out of town, while the Brembo brakes were equal to the task of slowing the 1600 kg-plus coupe. Fuel consumption here recorded 9.0 litres per 100 kilometres, while back in the suburbs it ‘tapped on the door’ of 18 litres per 100 kilometres. At close to five metres long, the Mustang is a big car and needed some close attention in heavy traffic, although manoeuvrability is surprisingly good. Mustang V8 is ‘totally Trump’. Like the strident, self-opinionated leader of the free world, what you see is what you get, and what you get, above all, is an old style muscle car.
