MORE TO LOVE The editor’s desk I’d like to acknowledge Stanthorpe photographer Sandra McEwan for allowing us to print her wonderful shots this week of rescued ‘High Country’ brumbies currently being cared for at the Stanthorpe Showgrounds. Sandra is an extremely talented photographer with a passion for the Stanthorpe area and she’s really captured the human-horse connection as these beautiful creatures prepare for re-homing locally. Fortunately the New South Wales Government appears to be backing down in the face of widespread opposition to a proposed 90 per cent cull of the Snowy Mountains brumbies, which are part of Australian history and folklore. My thanks again to Sandra for her images this week - you’re a real trooper. We hope readers are continuing to enjoy the Southern Free Times in our new gloss format - once again, feel free to get in touch with me with feedback and story tips on 0427 090 818 or drop me an email - Jeremy. THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT… NO SIGN OF SALEYARDS DECISION

JAIL FOR SEX OFFENCES

A potential plan to lease out the Warwick Saleyards to a private operator is yet to be considered by the Southern Downs Regional Council’s Saleyards Advisory Committee. A meeting of the committee had been expected to be held by the end of August, as indicated by the minutes of a meeting held on Friday 4 August, which recorded members agreeing to discuss Expressions of Interest (EOIs) received by the council from interested outside operators “in three weeks” from that date. But a council spokeswoman this week confirmed no further meeting has been held since Friday 4 August and no date has yet been set for the committee to meet next. The spokeswoman told the Free Times the Saleyards Advisory Committee “is required to meet four times a year, at a minimum”. “The date of the next meeting is dependent upon the availability of all

Therefore, there is no further update on the Expressions of Interest received until this meeting can be convened.” The Friday 4 August minutes note that council CEO David Keenan advised the Saleyards Advisory Committee members it was “up to the committee to advise council what to do with regards to the EOI”.

The minutes show the Friday 4 August meeting was attended by members councillors Jo McNally and Rod Kelly, chairman David McIvor, Blake Doro, Les Fraser and Graham Kirkland. Listed as observers were mayor Tracy Dobie, CEO David Keenan and council officers. The council’s September general meeting has been changed from Wednesday 27 September to Wednesday 20 September, and will be held at 9am at the Stanthorpe chambers. ●

Former Warwick Show and Rodeo Society president Neville John Fanning has been jailed after a third conviction for child sex offences. Fanning, 74, was convicted after a Toowoomba District Court trial last week of three counts of indecent treatment of a child under 16. He will be eligible for parole on 31 May, 2018. The jury, made up of six men and six women, heard Fanning had used his position in the community as a respected campdrafting competitor and judge to sexually assault an underage girl to whom he had given riding and driving lessons in 1992. He was found guilty at two previous trials of similar offending involving separate complainants and served a four-month prison term in 2016. Judge Deborah Richards said Fanning had shown no remorse for his actions and that he had taken advantage of his victims’ interest in horses, describing Fanning’s offending as “a gross breach of trust”. ●

After the demolition the council released a community survey asking residents if they wanted the sheds replaced, and if so with either a “simple structure” or “reconstruction of a structure similar to the previous building.“ The overwhelming resolution of a public meeting in the park back in March was for council to construct

a timber-and-iron structure as close as possible in size and design to the original sheds. The meeting was told a council report - of which the Free Times obtained a copy - made it clear that the termite damage to the sheds was not insurmountable, leaving many to question why the demolition was ever carried out. The report by Osborn Consulting says that while “the building does not meet the current regulatory standards framework ... it is generally in good structural condition (and) damaged

and missing elements ... could be remediated and/or replaced which may increase the life expectancy of the structure”. The Free Times also revealed at the time that the last council budget set aside $20,000 for the works referred to in the Osborn Consulting report. The council has declined to comment on a current Federal Court action involving All Trades Queensland Australia’s largest commercial employer of apprentices - which is trying to block a legal ruling that Queensland’s trade trainees should be paid in line with other states. ATQ last month challenged in the Federal Court in Brisbane the latest decision of the Full Bench of the Fair Work Commission (FWC), which has twice ruled apprentices should be covered by a modern award instead of an old state award. Union groups claim the application of the outdated award has resulted in the underpayment of millions of dollars in wages to the some of the state’s most vulnerable employees. A council spokeswoman said: “Council does not make comment on legal proceedings involving third parties currently before the court”. ●

Work is well and truly underway on a replacement shelter at Swanfels Pioneer Memorial Park east of Warwick. As reported previously the original shelter sheds in the park were demolished in January this year by the Southern Downs Regional Council which deemed them unsafe due to termite damage. The timber and iron-roofed sheds had formerly been a tennis shelter and a play shed at the old Swanfels State School and were moved to the district’s Pioneer Park in the early 1980s. A council spokeswoman confirmed this week that apprentices from All Trades Queensland (ATQ) were on site constructing the replacement shelter. Funding of $25,000 was set aside in the 2017-’18 council budget for materials and All Trades Queensland is doing the work for free as a project for apprentices. Current and former local residents and former students of Swanfels State School were furious when the council razed the shelter sheds to the ground on Friday 20 January, less than 72 hours after announcing the sheds which the council said were infested with termites - were to go. The park itself is hallowed ground in the Swanfels district, with plaques and

hey’ve been called an ‘Australian icon’ and the New South Wales Government is set to officially recognise the historical significance of the Snowy Mountains brumby. As reported last week in the Free Times a group of 15 brumbies from Kosciusko National Park - rescued ahead of a feared government cull - arrived in Stanthorpe on Monday 28 August. Since then almost all of them have been found new homes - but there’s still a number looking for a caring and committed new owner while they’re looked after at the Stanthorpe Showgrounds. Brumby enthusiasts Sandy Robertson and Leisa Gillham are the women behind bringing these brumbies to the Granite Belt, and like those vehemently opposed to the brumby cull they’re passionate about Australia’s wild alpine horses. The New South Wales Government appears to be weakening on its original plan to aggressively cull the Kosciusko National Park brumbies and reduce numbers from 6000 to around 600 over the next two decades. The government originally said it was acting on the advice of ecologists and other scientific experts that the brumbies are damaging rare flora in the National Park. But a huge outcry from brumby supporters led NSW deputy premier and Nationals leader John Barilaro to last month appear to back down on the cull, after fielding media questions over the expected timeframe. The cull was expected to start by the end of this year with a range of what the NSW Government described as “humane control methods” including trapping, mustering, fertility control and ground shooting - and trapped and mustered brumbies would more than likely have finished up in a meatworks.

‘WE’VE BEEN FEEDING AND HANDLING THEM THEY’VE BEEN THROUGH A TOUGH WINTER DOWN THERE SO AT THE MOMENT WE’RE JUST GIVING THEM GRASSY HAY, IT’S ALL THEIR SYSTEMS CAN HANDLE RIGHT NOW’ But Mr Barilaro appears to have effectively shelved the cull - for now - and instead will seek to introduce legislation recognising the “cultural significance” of the brumby. Sandy Robertson told the Free Times this week it was pleasing to see people power being taken seriously by politicians. Sandy - who has a brumby nursery at Hirstglen, between Warwick and Toowoomba - and Leisa Gillham are involved with the South East Queensland Brumby Association and have been rescuing and re-homing the wild horses for some time as part of the group’s ‘High Country Rescue Program’. The pair made the trip down south in the last week of August to pick up the brumby group, with Sandy obtaining her medium-rigid (MR) truck licence for that reason. New South Wales National Parks allows the release of some of the brumbies it traps as part of its 2008 Wild Horse Management Plan which remains in place, but which has far more limited control measures than the proposed cull. “They are just a national cultural icon,” Sandy said. “We’ve brought this group here to the Granite Belt as the climate is quite similar to where they’ve come from. “We’ve been feeding and handling them - they’ve been through a tough winter down there so at the moment we’re

just giving them grassy hay, it’s all their systems can handle right now. “But we’re going to start them on supplements like pony pellets - and I’ve been boiling barley so they get a bit of ‘porridge’ on their hay.” The group of brumbies includes stallions - which will be gelded prior to re-homing - and mares of all ages, with the group including weanlings and yearlings up to an eight to 10 year old. Sandy gave her thanks to local volunteers from the Stanthorpe area who’ve donated feed and have come down to the showgrounds to help with feeding and cleaning and businesses who’ve also come to the party with feed and drench and other necessary items like wheelbarrows, including Wilshire and Co. and Jenco. “They’ve all been awesome - we just can’t thank them enough,” Sandy said. The cost for the brumbies all up is $1250 each, which includes gelding, transport, microchipping, vaccinations and other vet bills, and feed. If you’re interested in re-homing one or more of the remaining brumbies call Sandy on 0415 277 145 or Leisa on 0409 721 456. ●

A FEW BRUMBY FACTS Brumbies in Queensland are found in large numbers in the Sunshine Coast hinterland but there are also pockets in our region in range areas and also in the Inglewood and Milmerran areas. The SEQ Brumby Association carries out ‘passive trapping’ including the use of lick blocks after detailed visual observations of brumby ‘mobs’ to ensure foals are not left behind. Brumbies are the descendants of escaped or lost horses, dating back in some cases to those belonging to the early European settlers in Australia, including the ‘Capers’ from South Africa, Timor Ponies from Indonesia, British pony and draught horse breeds, and a significant number of Thoroughbreds and Arabians. The origin of the term ‘brumby’ is disputed some believe it derives from horses left behind on his Mulgrave, NSW, property - by a Sergeant James Brumby, or from an Aboriginal word ‘baroomby’ meaning “wild” in the language of the Pitjara Indigenous Australians on the Warrego and Nogoa Rivers in southern Queensland, or possibly even the Irish word ‘bromach’ or ‘bromagh’, meaning ‘young animal’.

NEWS HISTORY IN THE MAKING

NO FIRE PLAN

Warwick author and researcher Deborah Wheeler is very keen to hear from anyone with historical family connections to Stanthorpe’s Kyoomba Sanitorium. She’s assisting the Stanthorpe RSL Sub-branch with a research project on Kyoomba, which was established for repatriated Diggers suffering from tuberculosis (TB) and those who developed lung damage due to the effects of the German gas they encountered while serving in the trenches on the frontline of combat in World War I. The Stanthorpe RSL was very grateful to recently receive a $20,000 grant from the Queensland Government under its ‘Spirit of Service’ funding program. This allows Deborah, their official researcher, to power ahead with her research, including unearthing details of the many soldiers who were treated at Kyoomba and the many nurses and other staff who cared for them. Kyoomba is a small township some three kilometres outside Stanthorpe. The hospital was known variously as the Kyoomba Sanitorium, Kyoomba Military Hospital or the Stanthorpe Military Hospital. The Granite Belt was known to be an ideal place to recuperate for these patients due to its high altitude and clean, dry air. If you can assist in any way please contact Deborah Wheeler on 0414 852 492. ● - JEREMY SOLLARS

More than half of Queenslanders did not have a plan for what they would do if faced with a bushfire, according to alarming research from RACQ. Bushfire season is underway in Queensland, and the club’s research showed 62 per cent of people had not considered their own safety during this high-risk period. RACQ spokesperson Kirsty Clinton said coming months were traditionally RACQ’s busiest for insurance claims due to bushfire damage. “We’re approaching the peak period for bushfires in Queensland and it’s shocking to see so many Queenslanders have not thought about what they’d do if their property came under bushfire threat,” Ms Clinton said. “This year, with unseasonably warm and dry conditions, bushfires are arriving earlier.” At time of printing of the Free Times this week, a controlled burn at Mt Superbus near Emu Vale east of Warwick was still burning. RACQ’s top tips for bushfire preparedness: · Prepare a bushfire survival plan; · Mow the lawn regularly; · Remove dry grass, dead leaves and branches from yards; · Move any flammable items such as wood piles away from the house; · Trim low-lying branches; and · Keep gutters clear of leaf litter. ●

’CRUISER COMES UP SIMPLY BEAUT BY JEREMY SOLLARS Our local livestock producers weren’t the only ones to have some big wins at the 2017 Brisbane Ekka. Warwick’s Carl Dittman was stoked when his lovingly restored 1972 Toyota Landcruiser ute was declared ‘Overall Winner’ of the 2017 Ekka Ute Muster. Carl bought the ute back in 2014 for the princely sum of $800 from a farmer out at Chinchilla who was leaving the land and originally planned for it to be a “bash car” for the Warwick Scouts, with whom he’s involved, but instead it turned into a restorative labour of love. Along with dad Brian and sister Shanae, Carl spent a couple of years bringing the ’Cruiser back to life - and has since had wins at country shows around the region up until last month’s Ekka. The ute began life as a run-around unit at the RAAF Amberley air base before the move to Chinchilla, and as these pictures reveal Carl and the family have worked wonders. The attention to detail is amazing - right down to the decals in the cab - and Carl also installed a floor heater and radios, two little luxuries the ute didn’t previously feature. Local firms were also extensively involved in sourcing parts and other components and re-machining - including Mal Wood Automotive, Windles, Ray Bunch and Mark Watts, who did the sand-blasting. “Everything was re-built except the front

After: Carl Dittman proudly shows off his Ekka ribbon and silverware.

Before: Pretty much a blank canvas...

The cab of the 'Cruiser has all the mod cons.

'Cruiser! Need we say more?

Beautiful job done.

The transformation is hard to believe...

A work in progress... diff,” Carl explained. “It’s just been a bit of fun going to the shows - you meet a lot of different people at the ute shows, from the ‘ferals’ to the ‘B&S’ ute categories - it’s a really interesting demographic.” We think you’ll agree it’s a stunning transformation - well done to Carl and the Dittman crew on their big Ekka win. ●

THANKS A MILLION

CASH FOR COMMUNITY

A Stanthorpe dad reportedly “erupted into celebration” on Tuesday morning after being told he won the division one prize of $1 million in the Monday and Wednesday Gold Lotto draw. A Gold Lotto spokesman said the man was one of four division one winners nationally in Monday and Wednesday Lotto draw 3692 on Monday 4 September, including two from Queensland, one from South Australia and one from West Australia. The spokesman said the “ecstatic” winner planned to use his new millionaire status to help set his children up for the future. The man, who wishes to remain anonymous, purchased his winning system entry from Stanthorpe Newsagency on Maryland Street. ●

ART IS BETTER IN A GROUP

· Warwick Art Gallery: Naomi Trotter and Juanita Faint - ‘Different Perspectives’, on display until Monday 24 September. · Southern Downs Artists Exhibition Thursday 28 September to Sunday 29 October. · Stanthorpe Regional Art Gallery presents in partnership with Granite Belt Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Corporation Exhibition NAIDOC 2017. Crisps 2017 Youth Art Prize - ‘Transport Through Time in the Granite Belt’, from 7 September to 8 October. · Warwick Arts Council present ‘Kids, Pets & Art’ on Saturday 7 October at the Warwick Cowboys clubhouse in Queens Park.

This week I would like to highlight one of our Southern Downs not-for-profit volunteer groups dotted throughout our region. Groups like these are formed when folk with similar interests come together to exchange ideas and work in an environment which is supportive and fun. If these meetings progress from the odd gathering in coffee shops, homes, schools, under bridges or public places to a point, they will need structure to move forward and to protect those involved. The incorporation of a club, association or group set up with a constitution or set of rules and registered with the Office of Fair Trading is the beginning. Formation of a management committee who organise, with the help of members, a plan for the year or the next five years is the next step. Fortunately those incorporated are able to apply for federal, state, local and private funding. These organisations play a valuable part in fostering the different interests of community members and the social connections which are so valuable for our well-being. I will start with one I am familiar with and over the next few weeks investigate other groups that provide so much enjoyment for residents and give back so much to the community. The Warwick Artists Group Inc (WAG) was indeed conceived under a bridge in 1962.

Portraiture is on the first Monday of the month. Our guest model with artists at our Willi Street Art Studio. The McCahon Bridge was the venue for like-minded artists to meet, paint and draw the Condamine River and the landscape. Dr Judith Best, Betty Newley and Mal Freeman formed the first Art Society Management Committee. After meeting for several years in various locations, they finally began raising money for a permanent home. Following discussion with the councils of that time the group were offered land by the Rosenthal Shire on the old stock route on Willi Street near the railway line. The Swanfels State School principal’s residence was purchased and shifted to this location in 1987. Regular workshops and artists’ talks

The studio has a versatile workspace and gallery. It is used by members and guests each week to work on their art, share, connect and socialise in a relaxed environment. To name just a few, this year WAG has held several workshops with visiting tutors John Wilson painter, Sandra Pearce printmaker and coming up Graham Smith will hold a weekend of acrylics and more on Monday, 30 October. As well as regular classes WAG have co-ordinated the ‘Contrasts Art Show’ during the Warwick Show, a Heritage Week Exhibition in April, children’s classes, the Easter Craft and Art Market in Leslie Park and participated in and supported the Jumpers and Jazz in July event - to name just a few of the activities of the Warwick Artists Group. GARDEN TIME TRY THIS … Shaping succulents Another interesting way to grow these amazing plants is in a ball or as a tower. To grow a ball, get 2 hanging baskets, line with a coir liner, fill well with potting mix and tamp it down well. Insert a piece of poly into the bottom of one of the baskets and push it up to the top so you will be able to water it from the inside out. Use this basket as the top of the ball. Hang them up so you can cut planting holes through the liners and insert the plants. When you have the number and variety of plants that is pleasing to the eye, put a piece of ply or heavy cardboard across the top of 1 of the baskets and invert it over the other one. Carefully slide the cardboard/ply out and wire the two baskets together. Remove the chains that the baskets would normally hang from and attach a chain to the top of the ball. Similarly a cone lined and planted up, then tipped up will make a lovely, decorative spire or “tree”. ●

BEATRICE HAWKINS

FORGIVING SPOTS OF COLOUR This continuing dry weather is starting to get annoying as we move in to spring. Gardens are not looking good. A good deep watering has revived mine somewhat but it is still a long way from flourishing. Maybe it is time to consider a change of direction and put some succulents and gravel in dry areas. I do have one ground cover that is really doing very well in a dry spot so maybe I need to plant some more of these. I saw it for the first time last year at the carnival of flowers in Toowoomba and hunted one down at a local nursery here. It is the Lotus berthelotii “red flash”. I have also seen it in a yellow colour and although the tag says a 30-50cm spread mine is covering about 1.5 metres and flowering beautifully with no special care. Actually I put the pot where I knew it would get a little water but not exactly where I was going to leave it, intending to attend to it later, and it just took off. I have yet to cut the pot away as the roots have gone out through the drain holes and I won’t be shifting it! Good thing it is in a place that needed such a ground cover! As I have said I am no expert gardener and this just goes to prove it ... very neglectful sometimes!

I saw this plant growing in hanging baskets and it looked great but was also told it was widely used in roundabouts as a ground cover and really tolerated dry conditions. I can now vouch for that. It is a soft trailing plant with grey/silver foliage and spectacular red/orange flowers that resemble parrot beaks. Supposedly it flowers in summer but mine is covered with blossoms right now. When I bought mine I was led to believe it was a native. It isn’t. It is native to the Canary Islands but does very well in our

area. It will tolerate light frosts (-1.5) so needs some protection in our area. It likes well drained soil, a sunny position and not a lot of water. It likes to dry out between waterings so the experts say. I would agree. I will definitely try and propagate some of these and that seems as if it will be relatively easy whether by tip cutting or seed. If the seeds are to be collected it is best to leave the pods on the bush as long as possible without them bursting and you losing the seeds. Pick the pods in late morning or early afternoon on a sunny day, put them in a paper bag for three or four days until they have completely dried out then gently open them. If they are not allowed to dry completely they will go mouldy or rot. Sieve or pick the hour glass shaped seeds out from the other plant matter with a pair of tweezers. Put them in a sealed plastic bag filled with peat moss and pop them in the vegie drawer of the fridge or any cool dark place for a short time. They should be planted within three to four weeks from collection. I certainly will be giving it a try but also hoping that some will self seed right where they are. ●

10 GROCERY SHOPPING TIPS… 1. Always go with a list. If you go without a list, you may as well just throw your money away. Better yet, donate it to me; I probably need it more than you. Seriously, though, you need to prepare a list of everything you need, pulling from your weekly menu (next tip) and checking to make sure you don’t have it in your pantry, fridge or freezer. Make sure you’re not forgetting anything. Now stick to that list. 2. Plan out a weekly menu. This is the best way to ensure that your list is complete, and that you have enough to serve your family dinner for the week. I often plan a weekly menu and then duplicate it for the next week; this way I can shop for two weeks at once. Be sure to plan a leftovers night. 3. Don’t go when you’re hungry. This is a common tip, but it’s true: when you’re hungry, you want to buy all kinds of junk. You’ll end up spending a lot more. Eat a good meal first, and you’ll be more likely to stick to your list. 4. Have a budget. When I go to the store, I know exactly how much I can spend. Then I try my best to stick within that limit. If you don’t know how much you can spend, you’ll certainly spend too much. 5. Do a rough running tally. Related to the above tip, if you want to stay within your budget, it’s best to know where you’re at. Then, when you can see you’re going to go above it, you can decide whether you really need that 10-lb. box of bon bons. I keep a running tally on my grocery list, just rounding off so I can do some quick math. An item costs $1.85? I say $2. Then I don’t need a calculator or all those complicated math skills. 6. Keep a list on your fridge, and write things down immediately. When you run out of something, don’t leave it to

7.

10.

your memory. Jot it down immediately, and you’ll never have to run back to the store because you don’t have eggs. Make a pantry checklist. Make a checklist of everything you normally stock in your pantry. Keep it posted on the pantry. Put a slash next to each item for the number of items you have (if you have two cans of stewed tomatoes, put two slashes). Then, when you use something, turn the slash into an x. This makes it much easier when it comes time to make your list. Keep things stocked for quick-n-easy meals. Easy meals for us might be spaghetti or mac-n-cheese or a quick stir-fry. We’ve always got the ingredients on hand, so we can whip something up fast when we’re feeling lazy. Buy in bulk when it makes sense. If you can save money, over the course of a month or two, by buying in bulk, plan to do so. But be sure that you’re going to use all of it before it gets bad; it isn’t cheaper to buy in bulk if you don’t use it. Keep your receipts, then enter into a spreadsheet. This will be your price list. Use it so you know when bulk or sale items are a good deal. It’s also a great way to comparison shop between stores; buy your baking goods in Store A but your fresh fruits in Store B. The spreadsheet can also serve as a checklist to use when you’re compiling your shopping list. Source - Zenhabits.net freetimes.com.au

LETTERS HOSTILE CROWD For the voters of Warwick and surrounding communities, the candidate for One Nation Josh Coyne has requested his observations be heard regarding the SDRC meeting at Freestone Memorial Hall on 10 August, which was attended by too many people to fit into the hall so was moved outdoors. The hostility of the crowd was noted, and since the saleyards has been operating since 1962 the Coyne family have been involved and were familiar with the operations as users of the saleyards, over the years. The real reason for the saleyards controversy unnerves those who have, for 55 years known of no difficulties with its operational methods. Some people were prepared to sign a petition, others were somewhat cautious. How can a responsible farmer be held accountable for neighbours who flout council’s management laws for pest control which is almost beyond understanding for the whole community. The $500 charge has a timeframe built in - it appears tied to the return of the appropriate form. Thanks to Josh for his concerns! Melba Morris, Allora.

REAL REASONS Recently, in a conversation with one of our councillors, I was informed that money was NOT the reason for standing for election. There was already plenty of money on hand ... the claimed reason was to give back to the community. Assuming this to be fact, there are two questions to be answered:

· Why not reject the councillor salary and perks, and leave that money in the hands of the community to reduce the debt or fix roads, etc? · What exactly had this councillor done to the community previously that necessitated “giving back”? Dick Howard, Swan Creek.

SWIFT RESPONSE I would like to commend and humbly thank the volunteers of the Rural and Urban brigades attached to the Stanthorpe and district stations, for the fantastic efforts during Sunday’s outbreak south of Stanthorpe. It came as a shock to all the speed with which the fire jumped both the New England Highway and the railway line, driven by those gusting, ever turning winds. The professionalism and the courage displayed by the teams were outstanding, with the protection of life and property of those frightened locals; startled by the swiftness of the ground covered by the flames. Father’s day lunch may have been spoiled, or postponed for the day as all hands seemed to have been mustered at short notice, making it a very memorable day for the grateful people of Severnlea. I was also floored, so to speak, by those local property owners who jumped on to plant to cut fire breaks and assist in the back burn that finally eradicated the threat. My sincerest thanks, and congratulation to all who have made Father’s Day 2017 one to remember. Roger Smith, Applethorpe.

THE SPIN

LYON HELPS SAVE FACE FOR AUSTRALIA World Cricket is alive and well or so it seems after Bangladesh posted their first win against Australia last week. Australia now face a must win game to save face in the two-game series before the Ashes. While the win of Bangladesh may have raised eyebrows in some quarters, it should have come as no real surprise and announced that Bangladesh have skipped out of the minnow’s pool at last. This has been by far their best season having already notched up wins against the Poms and Kiwis. After all, we should not forget that it was Bangladesh who bundled the Black Caps out of the ICC Champions trophy. Upsets like these can do nothing but enhance the state of the world game. It is not that many years ago we were somewhat surprised at the success of those then newcomers, Sri Lanka. That was before they unleashed the likes of Sanath Jayasuriya, Kumar Sangakkara and that little bloke who had everyone in a spin over his crooked arm, Muttiah Muralitharan. As I finish this column, Nathan Lyon has once again shown his worth bagging five wickets on the opening day of game two, but the job is still all to do for the Aussies as their opponents have fought back again. This will develop into an interesting finish and leaves cricket lovers wondering what impact it will have on our summer of cricket. One thing we do know, International Test cricket is never dull these days. Bring it on. - Casey FAIRYTALES DO COME TRUE United stole the main prize but the Ballandean Football Club who hosted last weekend’s Stanthorpe Football grand finals should take a bow. What a great day. For Ballandean who had teams in four of the five finals it was shaping as a great very special day with wins by their three teams prior to the men’s final. However, it was a fairy-tale finish for Ballandean’s opponents, United Redbacks in the main event. In a thrilling game, the scores were locked at 1-1 at full time. United’s first goal came off a series of errors in the Ballandean goal mouth. The home side hit back with an impressive goal from Tim Carnell who headed the ball past the United keeper to get the local supporters up and on their feet. In a real arm wrestle worthy of any grand-final play swung from end to end with both sides missing opportunities to put the game to bed. In an unusual turn of events, even the referee was feeling the pinch. Going down in the middle of the pitch referee Michael Ho was forced to retire with a leg injury and was replaced by Peter Patti. As the lights kicked in over the ground, United capitalised on an error to put first points on the board in extra time. At the changeover, United held a 2-1 advantage but no-one in the crowd was going anywhere with the result far from decided. In the dying stages of extra time, United’s Ben Manahan produced on the best goals I have seen in a local soccer (football) game. Considering, Manahan had starred in the earlier Senior Colts game, the 16- yearold showed remarkable pace and skill. He gathered the ball from half way running it to the goal mouth beating several defenders with a good step and swerve before landing the ball in the back of the net to seal another premiership for the United Men’s team. It was the highlight performance of a great game. United have a bevy of premierships to their name but the 2017 premiership and 22 SOUTHERN FREE TIMES

The United Men's A Grade side wrapped up a fairytale they dedicated to their manager, the late Angelo Musumeci. the earlier 5-0 win of the Senior Colts side was an extremely special and emotional win for the club. Players, officials and supporters were quick to dedicate their win to the late Angelo Musumeci, a United club stalwart and manager of the Men’s and Colts team who passed away suddenly earlier this year. The day began well for the Ballandean club who were successful earlier in the Fillies and Junior colt’s finals. The Ballandean Ladies took the 2017 title in extra time in their game against Tenterfield. Ballandean’s Anika Spiller showed all of her skill and class finding the back of the net on at least two occasions but was deemed to be offside. It was fitting that the 16-year-old scored the winning goal in extra time. The day was a great showcase of local football talent. JUNIOR SHOWING THE WAY Stanthorpe Junior golfer, Billy Webb, produced one of his better rounds to upstage his more senior rivals in last Saturday’s monthly medal stroke event. Webb played a consistent front nine but a one over par 37 on the back nine closed out the competition. Webb returned a score of 83 off the stick for a winning nett 62. Not to be out shone by the young gun, Keith Allen also produced one of his best rounds - 86 gross for nett 63 to claim the runner-up position. A costly seven on the 10th hole was not very helpful. Mark Hendry had the best gross score of 75 on the day and best putting went to the winner, Billy Webb, 26 for the round. Pin shots went the way of Aaron Simmers at three, Graham Tonkin at 12 and Terry Roser at 17. Pro-pins were claimed by Bill Pyne at 1/10, Matt Waterworth at 5/14 and Trevor Ludlow at 9/18. The ladies medal was won by Nikki Waterworth who also had the best gross score of 90 off the stick for nett 62. Annelle Batterham with nett 73 was runner-up. Racheal Hendry won the putting honours with 28 for the round. Lyn Ludlow claimed the pin shot at 3 and Nikki Waterworth had best approach at 17. The men’s run down went to nett 68 and the ladies to nett 76. Thanks to the day’s sponsors, Aqua Rural Supplies who supplied the prizes for the round and joined members for the day’s play. On Saturday, the club will host a single stableford competition for the Laurie and Val Newley Memorial day which will be sponsored by the Newley family. Tee off is from11am, and there is a time-sheet on the board. A reminder that next Sunday is the men’s and ladies’ foursome championships. The event is to be played over 36 holes and

competition gets under way from 9.30am after Sporters. Any member not playing in the Foursomes who could assist with bar duties on Sunday morning would be appreciated. ORIENTEERS HEAD TO AMIENS FOREST FOR CHAMPIONSHIPS More than 180 orienteers are expected to find their way to the Amiens Forest outside Stanthorpe for the two-day Queensland Orienteering Championships this weekend. The Championships are being organised by the local Bullecourt Boulder Bounders in conjunction with the Toowoomba’s Range Runners Club. Liz Bourne of the Bullecourt Bounders and one of the event organisers said at least eight international competitors from New Zealand, England, Sweden and Russia are expected to join 30 interstate orienteers and a large contingent of Queensland competitors. Ms Bourne said, “We’ve got 37 classes at the Championships, ranging in age from the under-10s to the over 80s, so people of all ages and ability are catered for. “We are expecting some top competition over the weekend with our men’s and women’s elite fields particularly strong.” Special orienteering maps have been produced for the Championships. Competitors are required to navigate their way through the bush to specified control sites on their course using their map and compass. Course lengths vary from 12km for the elite men down to 2.5km for the under 10 age class. The area’s detailed granite terrain provides some of the most challenging navigation in Australia, and many of the orienteers have competed here before and enjoy the challenge. “The Championships will be held in a mixture of a pine plantation managed by HQ Plantations and a natural eucalypt section managed by the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service,” Ms Bourne said. A number of local community groups including the Amiens School P and C who will provide the catering at the site will be benefit from the championships. Ms Bourne also acknowledged the support of the Southern Downs Regional Council who provided funding to help update the maps for the Championships and also to help promote the event. If you would like further details of the championships, head to the website www. oq.asn.au/2017-qld-champs or contact Liz Bourne on 07 4683 6374 WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT The Stanthorpe Croquet Club is holding a ‘Come N Try day’ on this Saturday. Mallet sports often get a bad rap from the

uninformed, so here is a guide to help the uninitiated understand the sport a little better. Mallet Sports - What are they? Mallet sports, include all forms of croquet including gateball, and are played outdoors on a grass court. The history of croquet is clouded in mystery. Some say it was started, 2000 years ago by the Roman Legions using branches as mallets to knock a leather wrapped bag against trees. Others believe the game came from Europe or Ireland. With the advent of tennis, croquet went into a decline but with the introduction of faster games such as golf croquet it has become more popular in recent times. Players use a mallet to score points by hitting balls through a series of hoops. There are a number of games within the sport and all are played in Stanthorpe. Association croquet is the most tactical game, usually played doubles or singles. Golf croquet is a simpler game, but still competitive and lots of fun, also played doubles or singles. Gateball originated in Japan. It is notably different from the other mallet sports being played on a smaller court using smaller balls and mallets. Gateball is mostly played by two teams of five players. Stanthorpe Mallet Sports Club play four times a week. The court is located within the Golf Club grounds, at 50 Amosfield Road, Stanthorpe. The club is hosting a free open day on Saturday 9 September from 10.am to 3pm. All croquet equipment will be supplied, so if you are intrigued to learn more about this unique sport all you need to bring is yourself, a hat, sunscreen, soft shoes and water. Mallet sports are a mentally challenging and provide gentle exercise so why not give it a go and challenge yourself. For further enquiries, contact Margaret Dickenson (07) 4681 0475; mobile 0437 835 708 or email: peakvale@gmail.com HUNTER A WINNER Max Hunter clocked up a win at Sporters on Sunday. A good round saw Max take the bikkies and relegate another regular Sporters, Wattsy to the runner-up position, but he also picked up the pro pin. The run-downs went to Phil Zikan and Angelo Maugeri while Paul Byrnes had the best gross. Ian Anderson claimed the pin shot at the third. Aaron Simmers and Terry Byrnes did not leave empty handed - winning the meat trays on offer. Tee off is set down for the usual time of 8am - 8.30am - fancy a hit? Why not join the Sporters who always make visitors very welcome. 2018 BORDER STATE CHALLENGE The local rugby league season may be done and dusted, but already the Goondiwindi Boars are planning their 2018 Border State Challenge Knockout Carnival. There is plenty of cash up for grabs for senior teams with $14,000 prizemoney for the winners. $2000 runner-up and $1000 consolation prize. Enough to make players get those training boots back out of the cupboard already. Any clubs or players who would like further information on the carnival which will be held on 17 February should contact organisers Jamie Russ 0428 961 225 or Tony Carter 0428 718 199. BATTLE OF BAGDAD A PERSONAL CHALLENGE If you fancy some fresh air and a personal challenge this Sunday, then the Battle of Baghdad at the YMCA Camp, Leslie Dam is the place to be. freetimes.com.au

email: wickets-stpe@bigpond.com

Locals are invited to get along to Leslie dam and take on and conquer the fun, but challenging obstacle and a challenging, yet fun obstacle course is in place at the YMCA Camp, with Warwick residents urged to come and conquer it. The Battle of Baghdad is the YMCA’s latest fund-raising venture, with 100 per cent of the proceeds going to a very worthy cause at Leslie Park. Obstacles have been created for participants to climb over, walk along and crawl under. There are several obstacles placed close together a tunnel and a tyre station among others. Local personal trainer Sarah Bourke knows firsthand what it takes to complete the course. She did the course in under nine minutes last Sunday and is looking forward to the challenge of doing it twice this week. There will be a sausage sizzle and music, and leashed dogs are welcome. Entry is $20 for adults and $5 for children, with funds going towards the New Dais Memorial Walls. This new fixture planned for Leslie Park will commemorate the battles from the Boer War to more recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan involving Australia Personnel. BILLY CARTS ARE BACK It is that time of year when everyone can get in touch with their inner child - the Ballandean Billy Cart Bash is on again this Sunday. Dads, mums and kids have been busy over recent weeks in sheds all across the Southern Downs preparing carefully crafted machines to take on the Jacobsen Road course in the shadow of the Ballandean

Pyramid. There is an event for everyone - if you are five to 99, you can join the fun - entries close on 6 September, and numbers are limited. MCGAHAN BACK WHERE HE BELONGS It’s been quite a journey from a junior rugby league players to assistant coach of the Queensland Red’s but Tony McGahan is looking forward to returning to Queensland and the next chapter of his coaching career. McGahan originally from Warwick has forged a successful coaching career in rugby union although his early roots were with Rugby League. As a youngster, McGahan played for Collegians and went on to play with the Warwick Cowboys before joining the Brisbane Broncos. He was introduced to Rugby Union as a student at Nudgee College going on to represent Queensland Schoolboys. McGahan also won a premiership with Eastern Suburbs in Brisbane. His impressive coaching resume includes a successful stint with Irish club Munster. He joined the Melbourne Rebels in 2014 after a stint as the Wallabies defensive coach and leaves the club as their longest serving coach. McGahan has signed on as assistant

coach of the Queensland Reds for the next two seasons. He will take up his new role beside Reds coach Nick Stiles, and is looking forward to the challenge ahead and to returning to Queensland after a 13-year absence. Stiles and McGahan have a big job ahead if they are to turn around the fortunes of the Reds. It is anticipated McGahn’s appointment will add depth and experience to the Red’s coaching program. COWBOYS UNDER-18S GO DOWN In the TRL under-18 grand-final, the Warwick Cowboys went down to the defending Premiers Valleys on Sunday. Valley’s blew the Cowboys off the park in the opening stages of the game dominating the game and raced out to a 24-0 lead after just 17 minutes. When the Cowboys finally got some possession, they posted their first points in the 20th minute. Shortly after captain Coen Martin-Brown crossed to narrow the margin to 24-8 which was the score at the half time break. The opening minutes of the second half looked to be a repeat of the first half as the defending premiers posted the first points only a minute into the second half. The Cowboys never gave up, and a try to Mitch Watson brought them to within 14 points of Valleys before Valleys Josh Bathgate scored to ensure back-to-back premiership glory for Valleys. Not the season end the Cowboys were hoping for and a repeat of the 2016 result. VALLEYS ROOSTERS 38 (Brock Diment, Coen Hopkins, Zac Miles, Travis Turnbull, Pat Brunner, Josh Bathgate, Kurt

Squires tries; Squires 3, Chris Chalmers 2 goals) defeated WARWICK COWBOYS 18 (Tom Lloyd, Coen Martin-Brown, Mitch Watson, Chris McIvor tries; Kai Etherington goal) WINNING WEEKEND FOR DALBY Dalby wrapped up their first TRL premiership in a dominant display over defending premiers Pittsworth the in TRL grand-final at herb Steinhort Oval on Sunday. The game was all but over when the Diehards scored at better than a point a minute to lead 32-0 after 27 minutes. It was not the defending Premiers day. The Danes have prided themselves on their defence this season, but they had no answers against the Diehards momentum in this game. In the end, Dalby had too many guns and relished their two weeks off as they looked fresh and out-enthused their opposition. It was a massive weekend for Dalby sports supporters. At a time when larger centres than Dalby are struggling to put a team of any flavour on the paddock Clive Berghoffer Stadium proved a happy hunting ground for Dalby teams on the weekend. On Saturday, the Dalby Wheatmen defeated the Goondiwindi Emus in the grand-final of the Rugby Union Rison Cup, and on Sunday the Diehards backed up the win with not only a win in A Grade final but they also took out the Second Division. ●
