Missed it by that much ...

Ocean Grove’s Division 3 netball side suffered a heart-breaking one-goal loss to Geelong Amateur in the grand final at Drysdale on Saturday. Beaten, but far from disgraced, the Grubbers can hold their heads high. For more JAMIE CULLUM pictures, see page 31.

New candidates New candidates have emerged to contest the council ward of Bellarine at October’s election. Ocean Grover Stephanie Asher confimed on the weekend she would be contesting. The two-time mayoral candidate is determined that the Bellarine Peninsula is properly considered in council decisions. Ms Asher finished second to Darryn Lyons in the 2013 mayoral election and has also stood at federal

and state elections. “For too long, this area what is now the Bellarine Ward - has played second fiddle to Geelong,” she said. “It’s time the coastal communities, as well as central and northern Bellarine, were considered properly. Decisions for this region should not all be about the city of Geelong. “Many people who live on the peninsula cherish what makes it

special. It is not Geelong.” Drysdale resident and Girl Guides stalwart Anne Brackley and Marcus Hill’s Jim Mason AM have also announced that they will be nominating for the upcoming City of Greater Geelong elections. Ocean Grover Stewart Webb and Portarlington resident Trent Sullivan have also declared they are in the running. “A lot of Bellarine residents have lost faith in the council and

I think we need to give back to the residents a sense of ownership and mutual respect," Mr Mason said in a statement. “I will remain mindful of a balanced approach and the needs of the whole Bellarine. I will work hard for you, listen, and consult." A postal vote will decide the Bellarine Ward’s three councillors and 11 councillors in total for Geelong on 27 October. Jim Mason

Cycle master takes a well-earned bronze William McConnell regularly cycles from Torquay to Ocean Grove to have coffee with friends at the Mint Cafe. He is 78 and recently won a bronze medal at the World Masters Cycling Classic at St Johann, Austria, in the 75 to 79 age group time trial. He estimates that he rides around 16,000km per year, more than most people drive. McConnell only took up the sport 10 years ago at the age of 68. “It gets the blood pumping and the heart beating and you can sustain it for longer than, say, running," he said. “It’s also a wonderful sport menatlly - it clears your mind and keeps you active." The Classic was always on McConnell’s bucketlist. His medal came out of the blue. “It was unexpected given the strength of European cycling," he said. “St Johann was completely awash with cyclists." McConnell will keep riding to Ocean Grove several days a week, but when the Voice caught up with him, he was enjoying a nice piece of cheesecake. “I’ve been looking forward to this for a while now," he said with a grin.

William McConnell came third in the 75 to 79 age time trial at the World Masters Cycling Classic. 172320

Stephen’s shed load of support By Justin Flynn Ocean Grover Stephen Meaney is a keen woodworker and plies his skills every Tuesday at the Men’s Shed. Stephen is accompanied by support worker Ryan Coombes and the guys at the shed love having him there. Stephen is a picture of concentration when the Voice visited. Keenly painting some model wooden planes, Stephen is hard at work. Stephen’s story is a result of the work from Bellarine Connections, an initiative of Karingal St Laurence (KSL). “It’s great to see Stephen getting involved in such a wonderful group as the Men’s Shed and the members being so supportive and welcoming,” Bellarine Connections’ Lee Considine said. “People come to Men’s Sheds from a whole range of backgrounds, Stephen is just one of them.” KSL is a disability support organisation with branches and spaces locally and beyond. Bellarine Connections aims to support, develop and facilitate community inclusion by supporting people to become involved in and contribute to their local community on the Bellarine Peninsula. It’s a new initiative and is growing steadily. “We currently are involved in some fantastic connections and partnerships with the Ocean Grove Men’s Shed, Ocean Grove Senior Citizens, a photo project entitled ‘People of Ocean Grove’, the Bellarine Aquatic Centre, Ocean Grove

Neighbourhood Centre, the Ocean Grove Community Garden and the Ocean Grove Park Association just to name a few,” Mr Considine said. “Our focus is on people being able to access and belong whatever their ability it’s about building communities where all are welcome. We have started with a focus on Ocean Grove but will be looking to other communities on the Bellarine also.” Participants like Stephen have been involved at: Ocean Grove Men’s Shed. A photography project ‘People of Ocean Grove’ towards becoming more connected with the local community, developing partnerships and contributing by highlighting important local community members. This will culminate in an annual calendar and photo exhibition, possibly at the Ocean Grove Neighbourhood Centre. Involvement in the Ocean Grove Senior Citizens. Membership of the Ocean Grove Community Garden. Development of a new Community Kitchen based at the Ocean Grove Neighbourhood Centre. Planning toward community planting days and a possible local arts trail. Planning towards community focused adventure/recreation and community art activities in the coming months. Mr Considine said Bellarine Connections appreciated and value the support of the Bellarine community and that participants were very excited about the future.

When Ocean Grove veterinarian Charlie El-Hage got kicked by a horse, wrecking his knee, he feared he would never run again. “I was on the ground in a lot of pain and I saw my leg and it was grossly mis-shapen,” he said. “It was just swinging in the breeze. I didn’t think I’d run again.” Three out of four knee ligaments were severely damaged. Only the lateral collateral ligament remained intact. After a year of rehab, Charlie will run in the 10km event at the iconic Melbourne Medibank Melbourne Marathon on Sunday 15 October. It’s been a long road back. For a while, Charlie didn’t know how to feel about the stallion that smashed his knee. “I did dream about euthanasing it one day,” Charlie laughed. “But I guess part of that stallion’s persona was that he was his own man and hated vets. Lighting up for this fight By Justin Flynn Ocean Grovers, get ready to light the night. Light the Night Bellarine will aim to help raise much needed funds for the Leukaemia Foundation, so they can continue to support the battle against all types of this horrible disease, that over 60,000 Australians are dealing with today. Held at Ocean Grove Park on 6 October, Light the Night will feature market stalls, food trucks, performers and more. Tomorrow, another 35 people, will be told the heartbreaking news that they will also be joining the fight against blood cancer. This makes a total of around 13,000 Australians who will be told that this year. The shared goal is to raise funds to enable the Leukaemia Foundation to continue providing free emotional and practical support to all those living with, and affected by blood cancer, as well as investing in research to improve treatments and find cures. “This is such a great event for such a wonderful cause," organiser Maddy O’Malley said. “We are hoping for around 300 people at this event, with people already signing up for the walk at the end of the night." Maddy said she decided to organise Light the Night Bellarine after organising the Geelong event last year. “My Nanna’s best friend passed away from leukaemia early this year and that affected her quite badly," she said. The walk is to 'light the night’ in support of all those affected by blood cancer. There are three different lantern colours for people to purchase. If someone is carrying a blue lantern, that’s for support, someone carrying white has had a battle with blood cancer and someone carrying gold has lost a loved one to it. Light the Night kicks off at 5pm with the walk expected to commence at 8pm. For more information, go to lightthenight.org. au/event/ocean-grove or search for it on Facebook.

Cubs earn top achievement Four Ocean Grove Scout Group Cubs have been awarded the prestigious Grey Wolf award. Jacob Lee, Alexander Walker, Eleanor Watson and Reuben Venables were the well-deserved recipients. The Grey Wolf Award is the pinnacle of the Cub Scout Section and one that not all Cubs will be able to obtain. It is the Cub’s equivalent to the Queen Scout Award. There are several requirements involved in earning this big achievement. Gold Boomerang The Boomerang badges are the major part of Cub Scout training and aim to develop skills and awareness in self-responsibility, outdoor Scouting, Scouting values and principles, creativity, personal pursuits and interests, and awareness of the Cub Scout’s local and global community. There are three levels of Boomerang: Bronze, Silver and Gold. In the past 12 months, have participated in a minimum of four outdoor activities. One of which must be an overnight camp. One should be an interpack activity. Using a map, plan and lead a hike/ day walk of at least two hours duration with a leader and a group of three to six Cub Scouts. Make sure everyone has appropriate equipment, clothing, food and a personal first aid kit for the chosen walk. In the past 12 months, have attended two Pack Councils. Rotary’s monthly market is moving to Ocean Grove Park from Sunday 1 October. Previously held at Kingston Park, the new venue will be more obvious to shoppers, browsers and holidaymakers, with an easy walk through from the main shopping area. There has been much interest from stallholders, old and new, in the new location. As well as craft, check out the food, fresh produce, clothing, books, coffee, plants, etc. More than $40,000 was fed back by Rotary into the community last year so come along and support your local market. An opportunity for local organisations to raise money is being offered - voluntary donations at the entrances via tin rattling could earn needed dollars. Rotary will not be collecting for itself so any funds collected will be directed into the local community. If your organisation is interested, please contact the market manager on 0401 606 036 to discuss this. Markets are held on the first Sunday of the month from October to April.

Barwon Heads Primary School Grade 5 students once again were involved in learning more about our amazing local natural environments. The recently held Barwon Estuary Project science day, engaged students in wildlife detective work. The workshop was run by Barwon Coast to create understanding of some of our wildlife’s unique abilities to survive in the local area. Students started at grass roots, studying a particular animal to list its visual features, discussing how these adaptations assist the animal in its daily life. They then worked through classification providing additional information for students to develop a dichotomous key for the species they were working on. As most of our wildlife is nocturnal and generally not seen during the day, it is challenging for many to know what may be out there. So students learnt field techniques that they could apply in the school yard, at home or while visiting the coast to identify what animals may have been in the area during the night. These field techniques included looking at nest structures, skull identification, reading tracks in the sands and the wonderful world of poo - or scat analysis. “The Barwon Estuary Project schools program provides unique opportunities for students to delve deeper into our natural worlds, providing them with skill sets that lead to making informed decisions that will lead to positive change. Only together can we make a difference,” Barwon Coast's Maddie Glynn said. If you would like to learn more about the Barwon Estuary Project and how you can contribute to Citizen Science, visit https://barwonestuaryproject.wordpress. com/about-the-barwon-estuary-project/

Drysdale. The Ocean Grove forum is being facilitated by the Barwon Heads, Breamlea, Ocean Grove and Point Lonsdale community associations. We encourage residents to attend and participate in the forums. Traffic issues VicRoads is about to commence the planning/design process to duplicate Grubb Road, which we believe will entail community consultation. We will commence lobbying both levels of government for the funds to actually duplicate Grubb Road from the Bellarine Highway to The Parade. Any such duplication will be on the basis of maintaining and enhancing the native vegetation along Grubb Road and installing all power lines underground. Our aim is to have construction works commence in 2020. We have a traffic meeting with

VicRoads and the council in late September 2017, so let us know if you have any other traffic issues that you want us to raise. 2017 Community Forums We want your suggestions as to what community forums you would like us to organise in 2017. Some suggestions have been: Developing walking/bicycle tracks within Ocean Grove and connecting to other towns. Establishing a cultural/education facility. So let us know your ideas. New committee members We welcome our new committee members Jo Hawthorne and Noel Emselle. The OGCA encourages people to become committee members and assist in facilitating community forums and lobby all levels of government for specific projects that will

benefit Ocean Grove. The committee meets at 7pm on the first Wednesday of each month at the Ocean Grove Bowling Club board room. You are welcome to attend one of our meetings prior to becoming a committee member. Ocean Grove Bowling Club We thank the Ocean Grove Bowling Club for providing the venue for our monthly committee meetings and the community forums that we hold during the year. We would encourage people to have a meal at their restaurant prior to our community forums or any other time that suits. Bellarine Landcare Group newsletter More connections More great work from Sophie, Louise and Kate has resulted in a $15,000 grant for a koala (and other wildlife) corridor. Its final location is yet to be decided, but it’s all about connections. Making it easier for koalas, birds and other wildlife to access their natural habitat and food sources. Indeed a national policy exists where north-south corridors are actively being encouraged by parks and reserves authorities. By using private and public land, serious attempts are being made to link Australia north to south, allowing natural migration of birds and other wildlife.? Wildlife resilience is the aim. This will be especially important over future decades when the climate will alter from its current patterns. Wildlife will continue to seek the habitat best for them, and linking habitats provides the best chance for long-term survival.? So in “thinking local, we are acting global“.

If you want see more information on this, please google: North South Wildlife Corridors Australia or visit one or more of the following links: www.wildlifelandtrust.org.au/index.php/member-resources/corridorprograms; www.urbanecology.org.au/ topics/wildlifecorridors.html; www. environment.gov.au/biodiversity/conservation/hotspots/national-biodiversity-hotspots. And by the way, though the Flat Earth Society still has members, the number is rapidly dwindling. Gorse, the BLG arch-nemesis It’s a joy to drive the Bellarine roadsides and see and smell the wattle in flower! One can observe the succession of wattles blossoming - first the sweet wattle (Acacia suaveolens) in June, followed by the golden wattle (A. pycnantha) - now showing it’s vibrant colour, then the black wattle (A. mearnsii), later the blackwood (A. melanoxylon) and lastly the lightwood (A. implexa). Spring is here at last.

But amongst the golden wattle flowers we can observe other, not so welcome, flowerings of the gorse or furze and the flax-leaf broom - invasive weeds to the Bellarine. Gorse, in particular, is a scourge on the Bellarine’s landscape, introduced as it was from England as hedging in the very early days of farming. It has the ability to infest areas making them impenetrable monocultures - a characteristic which for some reason was not evident in its native environment of western Europe. The Landcare Group has long had its sights on encouraging and supporting the control of the gorse. Persistence is the key, as seeds of this shrub are long-lived, existing in the soil for many years (up to 50 years) after the parent plant has been removed. And there can be as many as 100 million seeds per hectare in the soil. So, treatment must be on-going. The Landcare Group recently applied for and received $6500 from the Gorse Task Force to support private

landholders committed to ongoing control of the weed in cases where they need some advice and a little financial incentive to undertake the work. While most of these funds are now committed, we are keen to hear from any landholders who have gorse, are committed to its removal, but would like to receive a bit of a help along with the job. It would be great to drive the Bellarine and enjoy just the yellow flowers which belong. Getting rid of gorse is definitely achievable, and so we’d like to encourage everyone to be vigilant against this nemesis of biodiversity and agriculture productivity on the Bellarine. For more information about gorse and gorse management, see agriculture.vic.gov.au/agriculture/pestsdiseases-and-weeds/weeds/a-z-ofweeds/gorse. If you are interested in this grant, contact facilitator Sophie Small on 0457 333 727.

15 Aydan Calafiore will play Justin Bieber at the Sphinx.

freetime The Voice guide to arts and entertainment

Aydan brings the full Bieber By Justin Flynn AYDAN Calafiore is a young man on the rise. The 16-year-old is currently portraying Justin Bieber in a tribute show - The Bieber Experience - that brings him to the Sphinx Hotel in Geelong on 28 September. Aydan got his big break at the tender age of 12 on Australia’s Got Talent, where he reached the semi-final stage. It will be the first time Aydan has performed in Geelong. “I’ve been performing since I was seven and one of my good friends who I’ve done acting classes with, she recommended me for the audition,” he said. “I was really lucky, but I was also well prepared. I know every single word of every single Justin Bieber song.” So how does an almost 17-year-old handle the screams of teenage girls when he is on stage? “I’m used to it as it’s pretty much all I’ve known since I was 12,” he said. “It’s pretty normal for me now, but I had people asking me ‘how does it feel to have comments on your Instagram from people you don’t even know?’ and I’m like ‘well, it’s a great feeling to know that people are interested in what I do’.” Concertgoers to The Bieber Experience can expect a full-on experience. “It’s going to be awesome,” Aydan said.

I was really lucky, but I was also well prepared. I know every single word of every single Justin Bieber song…

“We have some amazing dancers who are there to support me and big screens. We’ll do 12 songs and then a meet and greet afterwards. I’m really looking forward to getting to Geelong and putting on a show.” The Bieber Experience is a fully choreographed extravaganza that includes Bieber hits such as ‘Sorry’, ‘Beauty and a Beat’, ‘Baby’, ‘Despacito’ and ‘Love Yourself’. Aydan will meet his fans after the show and assured us that nobody would miss out. Aydan Calafiore will perform The Bieber Experience at live at the Sphinx Hotel on Thursday 28 September. Doors open at 10am and tickets are available at $18 for ages three and above. See www. sphinxhotel.com.au/events for more info.

Winged variety on northern tour It’s now spring but it definitely does not feel like it - as I write this it’s freezing and hailing outside - great weather for ducks. I’ve fortunately spent a large portion of the last few weeks in Darwin for a family wedding, where it was fine and 35 degrees every day. It was certainly hard to jump on the plane and come home to the big freeze. As I haven’t been around the Bellarine I can’t write with any confidence about what has been seen around these parts over the past couple of weeks. I can however reveal the fabulous birds that I did manage to spot in Darwin. For the second year in a row I did a bird watching tour of Darwin with Luke from 'NT Bird Specialists’ and it was even better the second time around. The first stop was Fogg Dam, which last year was little more than a trickle due to the very poor wet season rains. This year there was water galore and thousands upon thousands of birds to view. The highlight was definitely seeing an Australian pranticole. The Australian pratincole is a medium sized, slender shorebird with long legs, long pointed wings and a short bill. It is 19cm to 24 cm long, has a wingspan of 50cm to 60 cm and weighs 55gm to 75gm. This bird is found close to water, in open inland plains, sparsely wooded plains and grasslands. The next highlight was my first ever sighting of a barking owl. I heard the barking owl at Fogg Dam, but to lay eyes on one was just something else. We saw 85 species of bird on the NT bird tour, including a common sandpiper, rufous owl, grey goshawk (grey morph) on a nest, red-headed honeyeater (male), rainbow pitta, glossy ibis, brolga, black-necked stork,

Australian pratincole.

Kevin's picture of grebes at Blue Waters Lake. and four species of kingfisher (redbacked, azure, sacred and forest). I tried in vain to spot a little kingfisher everywhere I went to no avail. I also was lucky to partake in the Yellow Waters sunrise tour at Kakadu National Park, where we saw similar waterbirds and kingfishers. I think the highlight was my closest ever encounter with a magnificent white-bellied sea eagle, and also close observations of comb-crested jacana. There were also wild pigs, water buffalo, and many crocodiles. Many shorebirds will be making their way to Australia from the Northern Hemisphere. I hope they don’t stop too long in Korea where they might encounter a nuclear bomb. The Yellow Sea, shared by South Korea, China and

BAITING PROGRAM FOR THE QUICK BROWN FOX

12363272-RC37-17

Did you know that “a quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog” is an English-language pangram? A ‘pangram’ is a sentence that contains all of the letters of the alphabet. Did you also know that we have a real problem with foxes here on the Barwon Coast? The problem is that these foxes are quick and they also have a taste for our local indigenous wildlife, including the threatened Hooded Plover. To tackle this problem, Barwon Coast have been running a fox poison baiting program for over 20 years. The baiting is undertaken within careful biosecurity protocols in the sand dunes along 13th beach and on the Barwon Heads Bluff. Barwon Coast staff also fumigate fox dens when discovered. These actions keep fox numbers down and go a long way in helping vulnerable local wildlife. Barwon Coast is a Committee of Management appointed by the State Government with responsibility for the management of 13km of coastal crown land from 7W Collendina to 42W Blue Rocks, Barwon Heads covering our beautiful beaches in Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads and 13thBeach. Our Committee members are local residents appointed with consideration of the skills and experience that they have to offer in the management of this important piece of coastline.

Harriet’s in da house Look out! Here comes Horrible Harriet. She’s wicked, wild and wonderful! And she’s coming to Geelong Performing Arts Centre these school holidays. A tale of identity, friendship and Mr Chicken, Horrible Harriet is a CDP Kids production, adapted by Maryam Master from the popular children’s books by author Leigh Hobbs. Horrible Harriet lives in the roof of her school and keeps teachers chained in the cellar to do her homework. Harriet and the other children don’t see

eye to eye - but all Harriet really wants is a friend. When Athol Egghead lands in his hot air balloon, Harriet finally meets someone who understands her. Then Mr Chicken arrives to disrupt the whole show. Fortunately, Horrible Harriet knows how to handle him ... or does she? Join Harriet’s search for identity and friendship, with songs, laughs, mischievous fun - and not least Mr Chicken himself.

The team behind the hit stage productions The 13, 26 and 52-Storey Treehouses, The Gruffalo, and Mr Stink bring the works of Australian Children’s Laureate, Leigh Hobbs, to life on stage. Horrible Harriet comes to Geelong as part of the Love Central Geelong Family Magic Program, for two performances only, on Saturday 23 September. Tickets are $22 each or $20 each in groups of four or more. Book at gpac.org.au or phone Box Office on 5225 1200.

Cobras gave it their all Ocean Grove Collendina Cobras 3 went down by nine points in their Under 14 Division 6 grand final decider against Geelong Amateur 3 on 2 September. Final scores were Geelong Amateur 5.4 (34) to Ocean Grove Collendina Cobras 3.7 (25) at Grenville Oval in Torquay. Despite trailing by 13 points at quarter time, Ocean Grove Collendina Cobras recovered and kept ladder-leader Amateur scoreless in the second quarter to lead by three points at half time. After the main break Geelong Amateur continued to press forward and booted 3.2 compared to the Cobras' score of 1.2. Max West, Flynn West and Oscar Morphet all kicked one goal for the Ocean Grove Collendina Cobras. The Cobras had a successful season and finished in second spot with a 9-7 record. Grubbers off to early lead, then down by just a point Ocean Grove 2 was gallant but suffered a shattering one-point loss against Queenscliff in a tense Under 16 Division 3 grand final on Saturday 2 September. Final scores Queenscliff 7.4 (46) to Ocean Grove 6.9 (45) at Spring Creek Reserve, Torquay. Ocean Grove got off to a flyer with a three-goal opening term and led the Coutas by 13 points at quarter time. Queenscliff fought back in the second quarter and held a six-point advantage at half time. In a thrilling last half, both sides went goal for goal, with Queenscliff in front when the final siren sounded. Mitchell Clark kicked two goals for the Grubbers, while team-mates Xavier Hayter, Jake Hargreaves, Ben Gillians and Pheonix Bowers all kicked one goal apiece. Despite losing twice to Queenscliff in the finals, Ocean Grove 2 finished the regular season as the ladder leader with a 15-1 win-loss record.

Runners-up for season 2017 Ocean Grove came out of the blocks firing to take on Ammos in the Division 3 netball grand final on Saturday. There was little separating the teams at all breaks so it was going to be team composure and the one percenters that were going to make the difference in what proved to be a tight game. Full credit to all players for such a high standard final, especially goaling superstar Jesse Sutton, centre court specialist Amber Binns and ‘never say die’ defender and coach Tam Splatt. But it wasn’t going to be Grove’s day and it was a heartbreaking one-goal loss at the final whistle. The red and white

army was there in full voice to support the girls. Division 3: Ocean Grove 24 def by Geelong Amateur 25. Best: Jesse Sutton, Amber Binns, Tamara Splatt. Scores were level at quarter time and half time and Grove took the lead by two goals going into the last term. But Ammos got in front and held on in a heartbreaking loss for the Grubbers. Despite the loss, the Grubbers had an excellent season and could hold their heads high. 17U Section 1: Ocean Grove 22 def by Drysdale 28. Best: Gemma Bell, Sharni Thebes, Kimberley Hart. Grove lost its first game of the season

in the second semi-final, but rebounded in the preliminary final to earn a deserved grand final berth. However, the Hawks were too strong in the decider with an eight-goal to five third term. Drysdale hung on to its six-goal three-quarter time lead. Gemma Bell was Grove’s best. 15U Section 2: Ocean Grove 15 def by Geelong Amateur 26. Best: Taia Young, Lucy Teese, Caitlin Harris. Ammos were too good, but Grove was far from disgraced. The Grubbers were still a chance going into the last term, just four goals down, but a 10-goal final term was enough to see Ammos home. Taia Young was good while Lucy Teese shot 12 goals.

Girls getting ready By Mark Heenan Ocean Grove Cricket Club has unveiled plans to field its first ever junior girls cricket team this season. The Grubbers confirmed they will register one Under 15 side in a Geelong Junior Cricket Association all girls competition in 2017/18. Club president Peter Hart said the exciting format required seven female players per side using softer composite balls in a reduced overs competition played under three hours. Hart said the first six-week competition block runs from 12 November to 17 December with another four weekends of cricket to run from 4 February to 25 February. “It is all shorter, it is about having fun and about getting the girls started,” Hart told the Voice. “It is a different format with cricket.” The Grubbers junior girls cricket program is aimed at 10-18 year olds with the club keen to add more girls cricket teams in future seasons. Locals Abby Richardson, 13, Charlotte Teague, 12, and Chloe Thompson 15, got a taste of the Grubbers ‘Girls Cricket Come and Try Day’ at Shell Road on Sunday 10 September. All three girls are eligible to play in an Under 15 girls competition. Abby, who has trained with the club’s top male juniors, is an enthusiastic participant of the Milo in2Cricket program at Ocean Grove. She has two brothers - Cody and Will Richardson - both star Grubber junior cricketers. For more information email ogccjuniors@ gmail.com about the Ocean Grove Cricket Club junior girls cricket or log onto www.oceangrovecricket.com.au. In other news, the Grubbers held a junior cricket registration day last Sunday at Shell Road. For any junior and senior cricketers wishing to play at Ocean Grove in 2017/18 go to playcricket.com.au for online registrations.

Anna is among the best - that’s official Ocean Grove VFL players Hannah Burchell, Anna Teague and Lara Williams.

Ocean Grove-raised Geelong VFLW footballer Anna Teague earned a top three finish at the club’s best-and-fairest award count on Saturday 2 September. Teague, 29, who turns 30 in December, came third with a total of 280 votes. She finished behind winner Lily

Mithen (294 votes), a Melbourne AFLW footballer, and runner-up Cassie Blakeway (287 votes). Teague played in Geelong’s VFLW first fixture - in Ocean Grove over the Seaford Tigerettes - at Ray Menzies Oval on 13 May. Teague booted an exciting running goal from half back and was named in

the best players against Seaford. The ex-Geelong Lady Supercats captain made a successful transition from basketball to football after she was named in Geelong’s VFL women squad in November last year. Teague’s brother-in-law is Mark Neeld, an Ocean Grove four-time

premiership winning coach who played 74 AFL games with Geelong and Richmond.Ocean Grove pair Hannah Burchell and Lara Williams both finished in the top 10 Geelong VFLW best-and-fairest count. Seventh-placed Burchell polled 244 votes, while Williams finished equal eight with 241 votes.
