Feat of the feet Hampton Park cancer survivor Denise Lyons says we need to hear more of the good stories about cancer. Ms Lyons is one of those good news tales, completing a 32-kilometre walk from her parent’s former Nar Nar Goon bakery (pictured) to Hampton Park on 9 September. The fundraising walk was in memory of her late and dear sister and father who both succumbed to the “forgotten cancers”. For more on the story, turn to page 5. Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS

Unborn baby killed By Cam Lucadou-Wells

Ms Allen’s unborn child, Milarniah Oscuro, died as a result. Prosecutors submitted that Thomas was attempting to illegally cut across and turn right via a gap in the highway’s median strip. She had disobeyed give way and left-hand-turn only signs at the intersection. On 6 September, County Court of Victoria judge James Parrish said he didn’t accept Thomas’s assertion that she honestly and mistakenly thought she could turn right. The intersection with “obvious” signage was designed “unambiguously” for traffic to turn left only, Judge Parish said. He found Thomas, who’d turned

left at the exit at least four previous times, acted in “wanton disregard for the law”. Her version of events was “overwhelmed” by other witnesses’ statements. The level of danger was reasonably high, her moral culpability was at least mid-level. In a statement submitted to court, Ms Allen stated that after Milarniah’s death, “the pain and suffering are too much”. Ms Allen felt “alive but doesn’t live”, “existing but ... empty” and not knowing how to live in the world without her daughter. “Our family should have been complete but now will be forever broken.” Milarniah’s father Chris Oscuro

Thomas “suffered remorse” for Milarniah’s death, but didn’t think she accepted “full culpability” for the crash’s circumstances. In mitigation, he noted Thomas’s early guilty plea, previous good character, unblemished driving record and lack of criminal history. Thomas was jailed for two-and-ahalf years with a minimum non-parole period of 15 months. She was disqualified from driving for two years from 1 December 2018. Outside the court, Ms Allen told reporters that the sentence “can never take back the fact we lost our daughter”.

stated that the hardest decision was to turn off the baby’s life support. He’d “give up anything and everything” to bring her back. Thomas needed to be held responsible for her actions for causing the family so much pain, Mr Oscuro stated. The court heard that Thomas herself suffered a miscarriage months after the crash. A friend stated that Thomas regarded it as an “act of God” for causing another person to “leave the Earth”. Thomas wrote two letters to Ms Allen, who felt they were focused more on Thomas’s own miscarriage and distress than on the victim’s family, Judge Parrish noted. The judge said he had no doubt that

A Cranbourne South woman has been jailed for causing the death of another driver’s unborn baby during an illegal driving manoeuvre on South Gippsland Highway, Cranbourne. Dimple Grace Thomas, 32, faced cancellation of her visa and likely deportation to her homeland, India, as a result of the jail term. Thomas drove across three lanes of oncoming traffic as she exited Cranbourne Home shopping centre’s car park about 1.30pm on 8 August 2016. Her car struck an oncoming wagon driven by 28-week-pregnant mother Andrea Allen with her two-year-old daughter on board in the 80 km/h zone.

Caught with cash and drugs By Cam Lucadou-Wells An accused drug trafficker has been bailed after being allegedly found with a stack of cash and drugs, as well as a ‘tick book’ of $37,000 worth of drug transactions, at a Narre Warren service station. Chris Stavrinidis had been allegedly fuelling up a motorbike without a rear number plate at the Vesper Drive outlet shortly before 3am on 21 August, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told. Stavrinidis tried to flee as police ar-

rived, nominal informant Acting Sergeant Garrett Sandeman told the court. Police seized $5825 cash, 17 grams of a “rock, white substance” believed to be meth and the tick book from Stavrinidis. The bail applicant had prior drug offences, Act Sgt Sandeman said. His criminal history including disqualified driving, cultivating a narcotic plant, illegally possessing a handgun and ammo, and importing tier-two prohibited steroids, the court heard. Stavrinidis’s lawyer said the illegal handgun was a BB gun and the steroids

were to assist the applicant’s recovery from a workplace injury. The applicant had been approved for a drug-rehabilitation CISP program, if granted bail, and no priors for failing to answer bail, the lawyer told the court. The applicant had previously complied with a two-year suspended sentence and a community corrections order. Bail conditions such as a night curfew, fixed residence, drug screening and CISP would reduce the risk of reoffending, the lawyer said.

“If he were to be bailed and engaged in treatment to a high level, imprisonment is not the only (sentencing) disposition open to the court.” Stavrinidis’s stay in remand had been a “sobering experience” marked by an incident in which a young person died in prison, the lawyer said. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said Stavrinidis was leading a life hidden from the gaze of his family. The suspected meth found on the applicant could be worth up to $8000, Mr Vandersteen noted. He granted bail because of Stavrin-

idis’s youth, his stable residence, a written offer of employment, family support and drug treatment program. The prosecution case “at its highest” didn’t necessarily lead to a jail term but if bail was breached, Stavrinidis would be back in custody, Mr Vandersteen said. Stavrinidis was bailed subject to the CISP program, drug tests twice a week, daily reporting to police and having a fixed address. He is set to next appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 11 October.

Sex offender hired teenage girls for work

Warm but raw chicken nuggets bought by Sarah Dougherty from a McDonald's outlet in Berwick.

Nugget nightmare as chook not cooked By Cam Lucadou-Wells A four-year-old girl has fallen ill after being served with raw chicken nuggets from a McDonald’s outlet in Berwick. The girl’s mother Sarah Dougherty said she’d bought the nuggets as part of a Happy Meal treat from the store on Clyde and Homestead roads on the evening of 8 September. Her daughter ate several of the nuggets before saying the nuggets were “funny” and “a bit soft”. On inspection, the meat within the warm nuggets was bright pink

and raw. The girl suffered “the runs” for at least the next four days. Ms Dougherty described the store’s response - in which she was initially offered a free cheeseburger - as a “disgrace”. She said her child could have suffered much worse illness. A McDonald’s staff member assured her their chicken products were “treated” for salmonella. “I was told mistakes happen with 16-year-old kids operating the fryer,” Ms Dougherty said. “They said I was the second customer to report raw nuggets that night.”

After lodging a written “tick-abox” report at the restaurant, she didn’t receive a promised call from the store manager. So she called the outlet again. A staff member offered her free Big Mac vouchers - at another McDonald’s outlet, if she’d prefer. “(They said) if you haven’t worked at a McDonald’s, you don’t understand how chaotic it could be and that mistakes happen.” Ms Dougherty has since reported the incident to health authorities. “They say they’re taking it seriously, but what are they doing to ensure this doesn’t happen again.

“I don’t plan on eating there ever again,” Ms Dougherty said. “I just wanted to let people know to check their food before letting a child eat it.” She is still awaiting a pledged follow-up call from McDonald’s head office. A McDonald’s spokeswoman said: “We are obviously disappointed that this has happened. “Incidents such as these are rare. “We have reinforced cooking procedures with this restaurant and we will continue our discussions directly with the customer.”

A registered sex offender has pleaded guilty to hiring four teenage girls at his Beaconsfield restaurant without notifying police. Anton Mai, who owns Tulip Thai restaurant, faced Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on five charges of failing to comply with his reporting obligations. Mai was registered as a sex offender for life, with two prior convictions for breaching reporting requirements in 2015, the court heard. On the latest charges, he failed to disclose that his restaurant hired a 15-year-old and three 16-year-old girls between November 2015 and March 2017. Mai, who represented himself, told the court on 11 September that his wife was “always the supervisor”. He had also failed to notify police of a delay in coming home from a trip to the US in late November. Mai had told police he’d return on Christmas Day. He emailed them with plans for a 17-day extension to his trip only after police made inquiries with his family on 5 January. In a later police interview at Pakenham, Mai said he had been unable to travel home as planned due to not having a valid visa, the court was told. It had been due to “an error and a mistake”, he told police. Mai was registered for life on the state’s sexual offenders’ registry after being found guilty of offences in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court in 2008, the court heard. Police prosecutor Senior Constable Jaimie Jeffs told the court that since then, Mai had reported multiple changes of personal circumstances, such as business details, internet service providers and travel plans. Magistrate David Starvaggi said Mai faced possible jail if he again breached his reporting obligations. “You need to understand that this is incredibly important legislation and it’s important you comply with it.” Mai was convicted and placed on a 12-month community corrections order with 150 hours of unpaid work.

Fighting ‘forgotten cancers’ By Cam Lucadou-Wells With just one blister on her foot and departed loved ones in mind, walker Denise Lyons crossed the line arm in arm with brother Steve. Ms Lyons had trekked 32 kilometres from her childhood home in Nar Nar Goon to Hampton Park on 9 September, just six years after she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She walked with the well-wishes and cheers of family and friends and in memory of her late sister Anne on the 15th anniversary of her death. Along the way, she has raised more than $3500 for research into the ‘forgotten cancers’. These cancers are the rare strains that receive little publicity, little research funding and five-year survival rates as low as seven per cent. Both Anne and Ms Lyons’s father have succumbed to ‘forgotten cancers’. Ms Lyons, now an avid walker, says she didn’t feel the pinch until she was just three kilometres from the finishing line. Her brother Steve who flanked her for the whole journey was in more acute agony by the end, she said. Along the way, they had a chance to catch up on life, talk about their kids and their journeys. Meanwhile walkers from her keen support crew, including other cancer survivors, kept her company on various stages. Her nieces and nephews spruiked the cause to strangers along the journey, raising $200 on the day. Childhood friends from Nar Nar Goon, where Ms Lyons’s parents ran a bakery, reminisced. ‘It was a really good energy. People were really buzzing and ready to take it up.

Denise Lyons and supporters set off from Nar Nar Goon past the bakery her parents once owned. 172601 Pictures: STEWART CHAMBERS “It couldn’t have gone better.” She says we need to hear more of the good stories about cancer. “We hear all about the horrible stories, the troubles with chemo, the unfortunate deaths, how fast some people pass - but we don’t hear much about the good outcomes. “People like me have been through it. I wouldn’t imagine I’d be doing a 32-kilometre walk in a day.” Being open about her own illness opened up conversations with work

colleagues at Dandenong Hospital, she said. “Not every cancer story is the absolute worst thing.” After the walk, inspired supporters were pressing to join in a repeat event next year. Ms Lyons said she would “absolutely” do the walk again. “Anything to find a cure for cancer.” To donate to the cause, go to myownway2017.everydayhero.com/ au/annie-s-way

And so it continues, the incarceration of these powerless humans on Manus Island and Nauru. Every week the situation worsens. I am a mother and a grandmother and can only imagine how the loved ones of those locked up on Manus must be suffering along with their sons, brothers, uncles and grandsons. They are gradually being transferred to Lorengau on Manus Island which is a transit centre that can house 280 people - their number is 700+. What is to become of these people? No work, no healthcare, no protection, no future. PNG have made it clear that they don’t want them. The government can choose to end people’s suffering in detention and allow them to live safely in our Australian community while being processed. Act compassionately, bring them here. Socially speaking On Monday 11 September, the Cranbourne Berwick News Facebook page shared the story of a youth gang that stormed into a Coles store at Springhill Shopping Centre. It is alleged a group of about 15 to 20 youths entered the supermarket, located at a shopping centre on the corner of Thompsons and Narre Warren roads, shortly after 6pm. They went through and grabbed a range of items, leaving the store soon after without making payment. The teenagers were perceived to be of African appearance and a number of them were wearing hooded jumpers and backpacks. The story sparked some strong opinions online. Trish O’Grady: No one was injured, maybe not physically, but I’m sure a lot have been injured mentally. How terrifying.

Peter Collins: Enough is enough. Jas Singh: A huge price to pay for multiculturalism? Got to hit back hard boys or else you risk Victoria turning into Somalia. Matty Mahar: Sick of the law!!! Does nothing, about time the people took back this country. I’ll proudly stand for the little man and defend him with whatever force is needed. Doug Hopkins: If they not born here, send them back from where they came after they've been locked up for what they have done, enough is enough. Michelle Smith: These suburbs are turning into sewers because of these no hopers. Round them up and get rid of them. Vee Loca Gazza Moite: The racism in these comments... kids non-violently stole lollies and soft drink, and a phone and people are

calling for deportation. Julia Thomas: Just catch them, justice will be served. Laticia Wilson: Deport them all. Ankit Mistry: Guys, please stop making the issue between black and white, find out the way on how to stop this problem...Whoever they are, there is only one place for them. Behind the bars for the rest of their life. Julie Gifford: Eradicate. Our community has had enough. Graeme Hanigan: Sickened by the comments. We have a multicultural society, and we have an obligation to make it work, rather than resorting to primitive tribalism. Joanne Van Rijn-Portelli: Did they get out of jail to do it all over again?

Two years for drug burglar By Cam Lucadou-Wells A drug addict who terrified occupants as he broke into two Cranbourne homes has been jailed for up to two years. Daryl Kelly, 41, of Cranbourne, frightened a young mother with two sleeping children as he stared at her through a kitchen window, tried to open a rear security door and then smashed his way into a backyard bungalow through a window on 15 August. Kelly ransacked kitchen and bedroom cupboards inside the bungalow, then fled over the backyard fence when police arrived, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard on 11 September.

Less than 30 minutes later, he entered another home by lifting off roof tiles. The occupants were woken by the sound of Kelly over the roof cavity. The residents called out to Kelly that they were calling police and heard Kelly strike at the roof or ceiling. When police arrived, Kelly’s leg was hanging through the ceiling plaster in the kitchen. He escaped via the home garage’s roller door and was chased down by police on foot. During his resisted arrest, Kelly was sprayed with capsicum foam. In Narre Warren police cells, he hurled a filled bottle of water at a po-

lice officer, saying “You’re supposed to have ambos here ages ago.” Kelly was also charged over a 120 km/h police pursuit on South Gippsland Highway on 14 February. He was unlicensed, recorded a 0.033 blood-alcohol reading and was breaching his bail night curfew at the time. From his car, police seized a centre punch modified into a hammer as well as a Bear Grylls survival knife, the court was told. He was also charged with unlicensed driving and ice and cannabis possession in March and May. A former interstate truckie, Kelly had been unemployed for three years

since injuring his shoulder, his lawyer told the court. Kelly’s 27 days in remand custody were the “first time he’s been clean since the age of 11”, the lawyer said. His “significant” drug issues included cannabis, GHB and ice, “using as much as he get. “For his most recent and serious offending, he couldn’t remember anything that happened. “He thinks he hadn’t slept for 19 days prior to the offending.” The lawyer conceded Kelly’s adherence to an 18-month supervised community corrections order at the time was “extremely poor”.

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted Kelly’s “unusual” and escalating offending reflected his extensive drug use. “He would have struck terror in all of the complainants. He is so intent on getting that property to get that next lot of drugs. “He doesn’t remember it, but they certainly do. “What do you do when you’ve got someone so intent on entering your home?” Kelly was jailed for two years with a 10-month non-parole period, fined $500 and disqualified from driving for 12 months.

Works start on roundabout at site of multiple crashes Hampton Park will be home to Victoria’s newest roundabout as works begin to upgrade the intersection of Pound Road and Shrives Road. Member for Narre Warren North Luke Donnellan and Member for Narre Warren South Judith Graley attended the site on Friday 1 September to officially announce the beginning of the $7.5 million project. The current give way signs at the intersection will be replaced with a two-lane roundabout and new walking paths, guard rails and street lighting will also be installed. Between 2008 and 2016, there were 27 recorded crashes

at the intersection, with nine people suffering serious injuries as a result. With Pound Road carrying more than 30,000 vehicles a day and drivers risking their lives at the intersection, the new roundabout is expected to improve traffic flow and safety. Mr Donnellan said the roundabout had been a long time coming. “The community has remained patient while we’ve worked through the land acquisition and planning processes and it’s great to see construction starting,” he said. “This vital upgrade will improve traffic flow for the more than 30,000 people that use

Pound Road every day.” Ms Graley said the new intersection will be a boon for local road users. “We’ve listened to locals every step of the way, and now we’re getting on with this important safety upgrade,” she said. “Locals know how hard it can be to get through this intersection during peak times; the new roundabout will make it safer and easier for people to get to where they need to be.” The project will be complete by mid-2018 and drivers, cyclists and pedestrians are asked to take extra care with reduced speed limits in place and road workers on site.

A crowd of 1500 followers packed a Hallam church to greet the spiritual leader of the Coptic Orthodox Church on 8 September. At the service at St Mina and St Marina’s Church, Pope Tawadros II - one of just two sitting popes in the world - received the keys to the City of Casey from mayor Sam Aziz. Cr Aziz, a member of the Coptic community, said it was believed to be the first key to any city in the world bestowed on the Pope. It recognised the Pope’s “outstanding efforts in promoting love and peace between all people, and his wisdom in leading the Coptic Orthodox Church to spiritual revival and triumph”. “It was an amazingly beautiful service and fitting that His Holiness received the keys to the City of Casey. “It really demonstrates that Casey is very capable of operating on the international stage.” There were mass cheering and clapping from the “delighted” flock, Father Abanoub Attalla later said. His Holiness gave “peace” to parishioners, some who had lost their children and other family members to targeted violence in Egypt. “It was a wonderful blessing. People were full of joy seeing him.” Fr Attalla said the message from the ‘Pope of Hope’ was for parishioners not to worry about Egypt and the safety of their mother church in Egypt. “Live the life of Christ, and forgive those who kill us.” During the Pope’s tour of Australia, he has been feted by Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop, Premier Daniel Andrews and Governor Linda Dessau.

Driver’s a walker By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Berwick pensioner has been warned he could be jailed if he’s booked again for drink-driving at more than four times the legal limit. Garry Roy Manning told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court that he’d been returning from a Welshpool fishing trip when he was pulled over by police at Princes Highway, Tr-

aralgon on Saturday, 13 May. He recorded a blood-alcohol reading of .216; his driving licence was immediately suspended. The court heard that Manning admitted drinking “half a dozen” stubbies of full-strength beer before his drive. He’d gone to bed earlier after having a “big day”. “For some reason I woke up one

hour after I went to bed and drove home.” Manning told the court that during the trip home he drove into a wombat, causing $3000 damage to his car. Magistrate David Starvaggi noted Manning had previously been charged with breaching an alcoholinterlock condition, as well as drinkdriving at .16.

“I can’t stress enough - don’t do this again. “If you come back a third time with a higher reading, you’re almost asking a court to put you in jail. “No-one wants to do that to you.” Manning was convicted and fined $1500. He was disqualified from driving for the statutory minimum of three and a half years.

A Cranbourne East family is seeking legal advice after being charged over an alleged dog attack on neighbouring sheep. Their nine-year-old rottweiler Sophie has been seized and impounded for more than six weeks by Casey Council since being captured in the sheep paddock on 23 July. Casey Council has alleged that two sheep were killed and three seriously injured by two dogs. The other dog is yet to be found. Sophie escaped the family’s yard when a fence was damaged by a tree during storms the night before the incident, owner Angela Duffield said. She says Sophie is placid, old and unable to run due to “two bad back hips”. The dog is incapable of attacking sheep, Ms Duffield says. “It’s gone on for too long, and Sophie has lost a lot of weight compared to when she went in.

“I just hope that anyone who is going through the same thing gets onto it straight away.” The council has charged a 44-year-old Cranbourne East man with five counts of serious dog attack, one count of allowing a dog to be at large, one count of an unregistered dog wearing registration tags and one count of failing to renew dog registration. He faces fines of up to $6342 for each count of serious dog attack and $3171 for failing to register. In a statement, the council stated that the dog remained in “council care” until the matter was resolved in court. The matter is listed for mention at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 21 September. Casey is requesting any information on the whereabouts of the second dog - described as a white-andbrown mastiff cross - to call 9705 5200.

An exasperated magistrate has bristled at a serial offender’s pleas for a second chance at a community corrections order. Dandenong-based magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted Corey Ian Simmons, like many others, had already breached and re-offended on a community corrections order and a drug treatment order. “You sit here every day and hear people who say they will comply with orders. You put them on orders and we deal with an awful amount of breaches. “Why keep bringing someone onto the same order when it’s not working? “The chances of him complying with a court order are very low.” Simmons’ three months in jail before the CCO had “little effect”, Mr Vandersteen noted. “On many levels he’s an uncompliant individual.

“Why does he think he’ll be walking out now?” Simmons’ offences included a police pursuit in Cranbourne, which was abandoned due to public risk, and making a false report to police that his vehicle was stolen in November. Simmons made the report to avoid prosecution for failing to stop at a random-breath-testing station at Beaconsfield the previous day, police prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Gary van der Poel told the court. In November, Simmons was intercepted in a damaged car with smashed rear indicator lights, bald rear tyres and a dangling rear bumper. On the dashboard was an ice pipe, with containers of cannabis and meth elsewhere found in the car and a co-accused’s sock. At the time, Simmons was driving while suspended. Simmons was also charged with breaching a family violence intervention order, and

with other counts of possessing GHB and cannabis, driving without number plates, driving unlicensed and driving suspended. Defence lawyer Bernard Keating said Simmons’ chief problem was the “quantity” of crime rather than the seriousness of the offences. Mr Vandersteen noted that Simmons had good family support and “relatively limited” priors until recently. He offered a sentence indication of five months’ jail with a 12-month community corrections order. Simmons, who appeared via a custody video link, told the court: “I’ll take it.” Police submitted for Simmons’ car to be forfeited due to his multiple driving-whilesuspended charges. Simmons told the court the vehicle had been “crushed” in a car accident and towed away. “The vehicle is gone.”

Celebrating the cultural diversity of the Casey region, Nossal High School has teamed up with Berwick Rotary Club in order to celebrate the first ever South East Feast on Saturday 16 September. In what was envisaged to become an eagerly anticipated annual community event, the South East Feast will combine and celebrate the authentic cuisine and entertainment from a range of cultural groups that make up the thriving Berwick community. The event will feature locally produced gourmet products, craft beers and wines, as well as a number of entertainment options including multicultural cooking demonstrations, performance artists, buskers and stage performances. Principal Roger Page promised the day will have something for everyone. “We’ll have three stages running throughout the day,” he said. “The large performance stage will be surrounded by food trucks and gourmet food sales areas. “People can watch performances from a range of local community, school and cultural bands and we also hope to run some lessons so people can have a go at cultural cooking and dancing. “There will also be a petting

station or the Monash Freeway. He encouraged community members to head down and experience what is sure to be a festival to remember. “We have room to accommodate lots of people with plenty of parking on site,” Mr Page said. “We hope it becomes a big annual event and are hoping we have a wide variety of people coming from the local area and beyond. Invite all the family and friends, the more the merrier.” The South East Feast will be held at Nossal High School, 100 Clyde Road, Berwick, on Saturday 16 September and will run from 10am to 4pm. To find out more, visit nossalhs.vic.edu.au or find the school’s event page on Facebook by searching for ‘South East Feast 2017.’

Kids author finds solace By Cam Lucadou-Wells Writing children’s books is both a service and therapy for Clyde North author and illustrator Chris Mawson. His children’s tales such as Rocky the Roo And The Big Bush Fire reveal little of his painful recovery from posttraumatic stress as a former paramedic in Perth, WA. The stress was “part of the job” that wore him down for 15 years. He and his colleagues endured violence from ice-affected patients, attended murder scenes with the strain of mixed late shifts. There was little wellbeing support for WA paramedics at that stage, he says. It led him into a dark, isolated place: constant night terrors, hypervigilance, sleepwalking and three suicide attempts. “I hated myself,” Mr Mawson says. “I didn’t want to be here. “I lost five colleagues to suicide.” Looking back, he urges emergency workers to speak up if they’re not coping. With the help of his wife, the way back for him was through a year of trauma therapy with a psychologist. He then used art therapy and wrote a powerful, honest memoir on his traumas, Broken: A Paramedic’s Battle with PTSD. It’s taken him three years to claw himself to the stage where he can take part in daily life. He now paints caricatures on commission, paints and writes childrens books, as well as writing an update sequel to Broken. The self-published memoir, now on its second print run, has “pretty much gone worldwide”, Mr Mawson says. “I’ve had a lot of interest from paramedics, police officers and fire-fight-

A disqualified P-plater has been slammed by a judge for his “clown’s behaviour” in fleeing a police pursuit at speeds of up to 164 km/h in Nar Nar Goon. Jake Matthew HamptonCollins, 24, pleaded guilty after a sentence indication at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 11 September. Just a week before the pursuit, the boiler-maker’s licence had been cancelled for six months by the same court. A white Colorado ute was seen by police at a speed camera operation on Princes Highway, speeding at about 120km/h past slow-moving traffic on 24 May. The vehicle accelerated to an “extremely high speed” when pursued by police, with lights and sirens blaring, prosecutor Senior Constable Jaimie Jeffs said. As the ute approached within 400 metres of a roundabout, its speed was detected at 164

km/h on the police’s mobile radar. The ute turned at high speed, then boarded the Princes Freeway on-ramp. On the freeway, the ute overtook vehicles and kicked up dust and debris from the emergency lane at estimated speeds of up to 140 km/h, Sen Const Jeffs said. Police called off the pursuit due to the ute driver’s “reckless” behaviour. The ute was registered to a female co-resident of HamptonCollins. She told police that Hampton-Collins usually drove the ute, but believed a workmate picked up and drove him in the ute at 4am that day. After several attempts to contact Hampton-Collins, police were sent a letter from his lawyers to arrange an interview three weeks later. Magistrate David Starvaggi said unless an alternative driver gave evidence in court, he would find Hampton-Collins guilty.

“I accept it’s not (the female partner). It’s Hampton-Collins or possibly a workmate.” Hampton-Collins was a father, who worked 15 hour days at his own business, the court heard. “His sole purpose is working for him and his young family,” his lawyer said. Mr Starvaggi said HamptonCollins, as a young offender, was entitled to a rehabilitationfocused sentence but faced jail for repeat wrong-doing. “You’re old enough not to be acting like a moron. “This is the conduct that frequently sees people in the County Court for culpable driving and dangerous driving causing death. “It’s clown’s behaviour.” But for his guilty plea, the accused would have been jailed, Mr Starvaggi said. Hampton-Collins was fined $2000 without conviction. He was disqualified from driving for 18 months.

Celts to kick it up By Cam Lucadou-Wells A world-class Celtic dance, magic and acrobatics spectacular is set to land at Bunjil Place in December. Celtic Illusion, with a stellar cast of internationally-acclaimed dancers from Riverdance and Lord of the Dance, will be one of the first acts to be performed at the soon-to-open venue. The show will feature some of the “fastest tap dancing in the world”, says director and lead dancer Anthony Street. It also boasts an “incredible” soundtrack from a team of composers including Angela Little who co-composed for Baz Luhrman’s film Australia. “Celtic Illusion has enjoyed great success, regularly performing to sell-out audiences since the show

premiered in 2011. “We have people contacting us all the time asking when Celtic Illusion will be coming to their town, and so we’re really looking forward to bringing the show to the City of Casey to perform in this brand new venue.” Street, who is also the producer, choreographer and “creative mastermind”, says he secretly took Irish dancing lessons while growing up surrounded by footy, motorbikes, racing cars and hunting in Melbourne. It’s a story akin to Billy Elliot, which has seen him rise to world heights as an Irish dancer. The show is on 3 December, 8pm, at Bunjil Place theatre. Further details are avilable at bunjilplace.com.au

Should the law be changed to allow same-sex couples to marry? The Australian Marriage Law Postal Survey is your chance to have your say on whether Australian law should be changed to allow same-sex couples to marry.

Learning the art of origami has become second nature for students at Alkira Secondary College who reached their target of making a thousand paper cranes. Students participated from all year levels, barring VCE students, in making paper cranes over a three-week period to mark the 72nd anniversary of the US atomic bombing of Hiroshima. Alkira Secondary College Library assistant Leanne Fox said she provided support for all students involved, adding that the final paper crane display in the library looked “fantastic”. “Students and staff contributed their own time at recess, lunch and at home, as well participating during pastoral care time to complete this mammoth task as an acknowledgement of their wish for peace in a world free from nuclear war. In this time of heightened alert, a peaceful future is a concern for us all,” she said. She said the students challenged themselves to make the smallest paper crane as well. “We’ve got some that are less than half a centimetre. We had large ones that we hung up around the library, and we also discussed the story linked to it so that really engaged them.” The students used recycled paper to fold the cranes which is based on the story of Sasaki, a survivor of the Hiroshima bombing who died from acute leukaemia 10 years later. “She heard of a Japanese legend that if she folded a thousand paper cranes her wish would come true to be healed,” Ms Fox said. Ms Fox said the students were enthusiastic about the project and were determined to make a thousand cranes before the 6 August deadline in commemoration of the anniversary. “We did it at lunchtime and pastoral care group. Each of the students had a group that met twice a week for activities and worked together as a group,” she said. “Students of all ages were helping each other which was really lovely to see. There was a lot of co-operation and persistence,” she said. Ms Fox said she admired the efforts of all participants, particularly how well students shared their thoughts and ideas with each other. “We’re going to leave them (paper cranes) up, so they’re attached to the book shelf in the library, and there’s a big display up on the board. We’re going to keep them up for the year. Towards the end of the year, I’m going to offer students to come take them home.” “I was really impressed. We made our target by the date, so we were really happy to achieve it. It was a great project. There have been lots of teachers and people who have commented on how well it went, and it’s a visual reminder too for students.” Ms Fox said the project was a great collaborative effort and all students were highly engaged. “There was a contribution from each level. We had participants from all year levels other than the Year 12 who were a bit busy. Some students made cranes at home and brought them in.”

School plans kids of steel By Cam Lucadou-Wells Students and rugby players will be working out in a refurbished gymnasium at Fountain Gate Secondary College. The school will receive $200,000 from the State Government’s Shared Facilities Fund for the upgrade of the gym’s weights room. The gym will be shared by players at the Fountain Gate Secondary College Rugby Academy. Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan said the upgrade would encourage teachers and students to be active and take pride in “this wonderful school”. “We don’t just want our young peo-

ple to learn in the classroom at school,” Mr Donnellan said. “It’s important that they participate in healthy activities and get the most out of themselves.” Victorian Rugby Union general manager Chris Evans said the rugby academy had achieved “wonderful outcomes” including the college recently winning three of four secondary school state titles. “The investment from the State Government will improve the rugby facilities and allow more boys and girls to participate in the program.” The State Government has aimed for a 20 per cent increase in students exercising one hour a day, five times a week by 2025.

Casey cash helping find a path to jobs By Cam Lucadou-Wells Adult learners in Casey have been targeted with a $1.5 million program from the State Government to help them get a job. The Community Solutions Casey project aims to boost training numbers of disadvantaged adults, especially those with poor English, literacy and numeracy skills.

It also aims to increase the number of training venues in Casey, with job pathways aligned to local industries. According to the State Government, the fast-growing Casey is identified as an area of marked skills shortage. The project will be delivered by Learn Local organisations and Chisholm Institute, and promoted by

local community ambassadors. Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan launched the initiative at Hallam Community Learning Centre on 11 September. “It is great to see Learn Local organisations connecting with their local TAFE to deliver outcomes and pathways to the adult learning needs of the Casey community.

“We recognise how crucial Learn Local providers are to communities across the breadth of Victoria, often providing valuable pre-accredited training opportunities to some of the most disadvantaged learners.” The program will be supported by Department of Education and Training, the Department of Health and Human Services, City of Casey and other community organisations.

Kids keeping the show spectacular Berwick College students have been deep in rehearsal for the upcoming Victorian State Schools Spectacular. Among the 3000 performers from across the state, three Berwick College dancers Emily Sebastian, Jaycee Kerslake and Shaylah Westwood have been invited as principal and ensemble performers. Anthony Nicholls will play bass guitar with the 64-piece orchestra. The spectacular includes music, dance, singing and puppetry under the tutelage of top-notch industry professionals. It is on at Hisense Arena at Saturday, 16 September at 1pm and 6.30pm.

More than 200 species of orchid will be on bloom at Berwick Orchid Society’s annual show. Despite a difficult growing season, spokesman Murray Harding promised a spectacular display of up to 400 plants., including the native dendrobium speciosum. The Devon Meadows grower said Melbourne’s winter had offered few minutes of necessary warmth, although many orchids were used to cool highland climes. “There’s been reasonable tem-

peratures during the day, but it has been only briefly.” One of the member exhibitors is prize-winning grower Jonathan Lae, 16, who Mr Harding said “grows a pretty mean orchid". Jonathan recently won the champion junior grower award at Australia’s largest annual orchid show, the Melbourne Orchid Spectacular. He said it was not too hard to grow a prize-winning cymbidium just add fertiliser at the right time and shelter them from Melbourne’s weather under shadecloth. He has been growing for the past

three years, inspired by his mother’s interest at the orchid club. By showtime, he hoped to have his best examples of speciosum ready. The orchid show includes morning and afternoon teas, floral art displays, growing accessories and plant-care demonstrations. Several flowering orchids will be up for grabs in a raffle. The show is at Berwick Senior Citizens Hall, 112 High Street, Berwick on 23 and 24 September, 9am4pm. It has been sponsored by Berwick Pottery for the past 26 years.

Red light trucks danger By Brendan Rees Truck drivers are driving at “frightening” speeds through red lights, Casey Councillor Amanda Stapleton says. Speaking during a council meeting held on 5 September, Cr Stapleton said the Cranbourne community was concerned about trucks running red lights at major intersections of Cranbourne. “This is long over-due. I’ve witnessed some very, very scary driving,” she said. Casey council voted unanimously to seek police assistance in monitoring major roads in Cranbourne, particularly the corner of South Gippsland Highway and Sladen Street, High Street shopping precinct, and intersection of Berwick-Cranbourne Road and Casey Fields Boulevard intersection. Cr Stapleton said she valued the work of truck drivers but a “very clear message” was needed improve road safety. “Whilst I’m not generalising of all truck drivers, I’ve seen enough that’s a really great concern and the community really are concerned as well. I’m just wondering if there’s any reason why we don’t think we can engage with the police over

this,” she said. Cr Stapleton said more trucks needed to be monitored as she witnessed a double low loader speeding through a red light on the corner of Berwick Cranbourne Road and Casey Fields Boulevard. “I was stopped at a red light, and this truck didn’t slow down. He just kept going. It’s so frightening. The next one I saw was just a truck coming down South Gippsland Highway pass the race track and it went straight through a red light down the hill,” she said. “Can you imagine if he ploughed into the oncoming traffic which could have happened so easily. It’s about our safety. The outcome should it go wrong could be disastrous.” She said more trucks were travelling from Gippsland through Cranbourne. “We also got lots of trucks in the area because of the development. So it’s about monitoring those trucks and making sure they’re obeying our road rules.” “The one thing we’ve been trying to do on High Street for example is lower the speed limit down to 40km/h. VicRoads has assured that they won’t put any money behind it. They want us to

Show judged a beauty

Sgt McGavigan said failing to obey a red light was currently $396 and three demerit points. “Like speed, we do not discriminate on the offender’s vehicle - truck or car - we will enforce,” he said. “A few extra minutes travel by slowing down to the speed limit or stopping for a red light could stop road trauma or as a minimum save a person money - better spent than donating it to the government through fines. Sgt McGavigan asked people to obey speed limits, red lights and other road rules for everyone’s safety. “In Casey PSA, there have been eight lives lost on the road in 2017. Eight people have died and many more affected by their involvement in road trauma. For Victoria, it is 180 lives as of 12 September 2017. We aim for zero,” he said. Cranbourne police Acting Senior Sergeant David Fyfe said road safety was an important component of ensuring a safer community. “On any public road within the City of Casey, any time of the day or night, motorists may be subject to random breath testing. Safer roads lead to a reduced toll from fatal motor collisions,” he said.

performed Shout, accompanied by dancers from Alkira Secondary College. They were later announced as open division winners for their take on Singing In the Rain. “This year I am thrilled that the students have had the opportunity to perform their musicals with a live orchestra, which in some cases was the first time that these students have performed on stage,” Cr Smith said. “As an audience, we were treated to an entertaining night, watching exceptional talent that makes for a very promising future for the arts in Casey.” The contest has been run by City of Casey for seven years.

St Francis Xavier College has come up trumps at a Casey-wide musicalstage competition. The college production of Beauty and the Beast won the Schools On Stage premier division on 7 September, followed by Kooweerup Secondary College’s performance of Fiddler on the Roof. Eleven schools competed across two divisions, exhibiting hours of hard work and dedication, said Casey councillor Wayne Smith. “It thrills me to see young people pursuing their interests in the arts, and Schools on Stage is a fantastic opportunity for young people to reach their full potential.” The event’s host Tim Campbell

invest the $120,000 to get those shopping strip speed limits during certain times. It’s VicRoads’ responsibility,” she said. Casey Highway Patrol Sergeant Pat McGavigan said speeding was one of the major contributors to road trauma and would target motorists with the use of laser speed detectors and mobile mode radar speed detectors. “We also have input in the rostering of mobile speed cameras to deter and detect speeding vehicles. When targeting speeding traffic, we target all traffic, trucks included,” he said. “We recently targeted the South Gippsland Highway near the scene of the double fatality as speed was a contributor to this collision.” “When looking through the aiming reticle of a laser speed detector we look at all vehicles not just trucks or just cars.” Sgt McGavigan said the Highway Patrol wanted to stop road trauma, but could not be everywhere all the time, and needed the support of community to obey road rules. “Many vehicles are taking the risk and running red lights including trucks. If this is observed by police, we will intercept and prosecute for the offence,” he said.

No word yet on civic centre plans By Cam Lucadou-Wells Casey Council is yet to announce future plans for its soon to be demolished civic centre and library in Narre Warren. The council and library are set to relocate to the $125 million Bunjil Place in October, with the vacated buildings demolished next year. Mayor Sam Aziz said the circa1970s buildings were in “poor condition”. “Both the civic centre and library buildings have outlived their usefulness,” he said. “It’s simply not practical or eco-

nomically viable to invest a significant amount of ratepayers’ money to bring them up to a standard suitable for any tenant.” Cr Aziz said no decision had been made on the future of the demolition site. In the short term, part of the area will be a 75-space car park and a linking park between Bunjil Place and the Westfield shopping centre. “Our preference for the site (is) to remain in council hands. “To recognise the potential of the existing council office and library site, council is working towards a plan to build off the success of Bunjil Place and

provide maximum value to council and the community.” Cr Aziz said the council was planning for the Narre Warren and Fountain Gate precinct to be the “premier CBD of the South-East”. “With a catchment of 355,000 people, the area is a regional shopping, entertainment, employment and community destination with Bunjil Place and Casey ARC at its heart. “The community will have opportunities to have its say about the site in the future through the planning process.” Demolition works will start in early 2018.

Four of the best (roads) Four of the busiest roads in Cranbourne will receive a safety boost for pedestrians and cyclists. Member for Cranbourne Jude Perera announced safety improvements at key local roads to reduce the risk of people getting hit while crossing the road, with works to start next July. Traffic signals with push buttons, pedestrian lanterns and lines will be installed at Cranbourne-Frankston Road near Lurline Street, Cranbourne, Thompsons Road west of Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road, Cranbourne and the South Gippsland Highway near Waverley Park Drive, Cranbourne North. The $2.5 million investment for the project comes from the state government’s Growth Areas Infrastructure Contribution program, which funds key projects in Melbourne’s growing outer suburbs. “Thousands of vehicles use South

Gippsland Highway and CranbourneFrankston Road every day, which is why we’re installing these new crossings - to make it safer for pedestrians and cyclists to cross the road,” Mr Perera said. “We’re investing to keep people safe in our growing South-East whether they are getting around on bikes or on foot,” he said. All of the crossings are close to schools, shopping centres or sporting venues, and are well used by pedestrians and cyclists. The intersection at South Gippsland Highway near Station Street in Cranbourne will also have its pedestrian operated signals upgraded, which is expected to be completed mid-2019. The new improved crossings will also encourage residents to get around Cranbourne on bike and on foot, and provide better access to bus stops and train stations in the South-East.

Relax into rehabilitation The Oncology Rehabilitation Outpatient program at St John of God Frankston Rehabilitation Hospital is a six-week, twice a week program incorporating information sessions, meditation, tai chi, exercise and hydrotherapy, which is tailored to suit individual needs and goals. As St John of God CEO Lisa Norman explained, the information sessions are interactive and discuss topics to assist in day-to-day life such as healthy food choices when people aren’t feeling their best, tips on managing stress, the benefits of exercise and providing instruction to partici-

pants on how to pace themselves to get through the day. “The meditation session will help you wind down and refocus and the tai chi session is great for balance, posture and breathing,” Mrs Norman said. “Exercise is an integral part of rehabilitation and plays an important part in reducing cancer related fatigue and improving quality of life.” Hydrotherapy is new to oncology rehabilitation, but early research shows it is an effective method of exercise. “The water is 34 degrees and while the water resistance provides a great

workout, we let you float around as part of your ‘cool down’, so it is a very relaxing session,” Mrs Norman said. “Whilst we encourage everyone to participate, we understand hydrotherapy is not for everyone, so an alternative gym session can be provided.” Those who want to get started can just ask a specialist or GP for a referral to one of St John of God’s rehabilitation physicians who will complete a medical assessment to enter the program. For further information, contact either Rebecca or Sam on 9788 3333.

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST

Disability jobs on the line By Casey Neill A Dandenong disability enterprise is reeling after the City of Casey ended its eight-year relationship. Gateway Industries CEO Alan Warwick said it was “a kick in the guts more than anything” to miss out on the contract to provide mulching, weeding and planting throughout the municipality. He said the decision would affect two supervisors and eight to 12 employees. “We’ve had a contract for eight years,” Mr Warwick said. “We worked with them prior to that through Fulton Hogan (as a subcontractor). “We’ve never had anything but positive feedback. “I’m deeply hurt.” The registered charity that offers employment, training and support for adults with disabilities in Greater Dandenong and Casey started more than 30 years ago as a Rotary Club of Dandenong initiative. Mr Warwick said the council told him the decision was based on price but did not provide further explanation. “Our guys average $4.80 to $6 an hour plus a supervisor,” he said. Mr Warwick said he was now looking for other outdoor gardening work “to keep these guys employed and having a meaningful life, basically”. “I understand they’ve got a business to run as well,” he said. Gateway president Russell Smith said the news had “really hit us hard” and would have a big impact on the budget. “It’s going to cause us quite a lot of challenge,” he said. “It’s pretty devastating for us.” City of Casey city presentation manager David Richardson said Gateway Industries was previously one of a panel of contractors on a fixed term. “The contract was let in July 2013 for two years with an option of two

Gateway CEO Alan Warwick.

one-year extensions,” he said. “The expiry date of the contract was fixed and known for all contractors with the final extension of the contract in 2016. “Gateway Industries would have received 12 months’ notice that the contract would expire in July 2017.” Mr Richardson said the tender for the service was publicly advertised on 6 May and closed on 31 May, and the council received 25 submissions.

“Following a rigorous evaluation process against established criteria, including price and quality considerations, the recommendation was for the contract to be awarded to a panel of six providers,” he said. The council endorsed the decision on 15 August. “Due to the competitive and transparent process in tendering, previous contractors may miss out on the new contracts,” he said.

“We understand that the process may cause disappointment for the old contractors when they have previously delivered a good service. “Council would like to acknowledge the work previously undertaken by Gateway Industries. “The energy and enthusiasm Gateway staff approached their work made them a pleasure to work with.” Councillor Amanda Stapeldon said she was a long-time supporter of Gate-

way but was totally removed from the tender process. She said she was pushing for more council engagement with disability groups. Gateway Industries has provided street furniture cleaning and litter pick-up services to Greater Dandenong Council for more than 25 years, and garden maintenance to Greenways Retirement Village in Seaford for more than 15 years.

More work and more members the plan for Gateway By Casey Neill Gateway Industries is seeking more work and more members. The Dandenong-based disability enterprise held its annual general meeting at its Progress Street headquarters on Tuesday, 12 September. President Russell Smith thanked Gateway’s customers, which include Greater Dandenong Council, Greenways Retirement Village and Pacific National. Gateway workers have disabilities, and complete jobs including gardening, maintenance, woodwork, and processing and packaging. Earlier this month Gateway learnt that its second-biggest customer, the City of Casey, had ended its eight-year relationship. This will cause a shortfall of about $180,000. Overall income from work completed was up about $1000 to $876,988 in the 12 months to 30 June. “More and more the government are saying that we have to get the funds from our customers,” Mr Smith said. “It’s very important that we run Gateway as a business. “Our employees not only work very, very hard, they enjoy Gateway as a place where they belong. “It’s a family.” Mr Smith said the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) involved huge amounts of bureaucracy, money

Gateway president Russell Smith delivers his report. and complex detail. “It has affected us and will affect us more, particularly in the next couple of years,” he said. “It’s something the board will have to really look into and investigate.” In his written report he said: “Because each employee will be considered on a case by case basis it is un-

clear as to how many of our people will remain at Gateway. “We hope, of course, that most if not all of our employees will stay at our industry.” Mr Smith told the AGM that Gateway needed new members and membership cost $5. “That means you can vote on any-

thing and nominate to be on the board,” he said. “Think about our future. “We’ll do it for our wonderful employees.” In his written report, Mr Smith said the “enthusiasm, loyalty and work ethic of our wonderful employees continues to inspire us all”.

“To see the diligence of our employees, to hear of their superb work from our customers, to witness their cheery demeanour in the parks and gardens as well as in our factory is something that very few workplaces could emulate,” he said. CEO Alan Warwick said the year had been a trying one for everyone involved in Gateway, particularly losing the Casey contract. “That’s only given us another challenge to go on, to find something new,” he said. The report from employee representatives Nicci Guttery and Peter Christoforou highlighted a graduation ceremony for certificate one in work education. “We have had some people that have celebrated a milestone of 20 years working here at Gateway and some celebrating their 10-year anniversary,” they said. Board member and Peter’s father, Conn Christoforou, told the AGM that people didn’t realise the pressures the place had been under during the past year. He said the supervisors were not just a great support, but great people. “They cover for everything and there’s never anything missed,” he said. “When your kids come home happy it tells you something.”

Madi medal motivation By David Nagel Berwick skipper Madi Andrews will be hoping history repeats itself after claiming his second Norm Walker Medal for best and fairest in the South East Football Netball League on Monday night. Andrews took ‘Normie’ home in 2015 before leading the Wickers to a drought-breaking premiership win against Cranbourne. He will lead the Wickers into battle once again against Narre Warren in Saturday’s grand final at Holm Park Reserve. On what was a great night for past winners, Andrews polled 28 votes to win by eight from three-time winner Scott Meyer. The Beaconsfield ruckman was a surprise leader after Round 5, polling a near-perfect 14 votes to lead by five from Doveton’s Russell Gabriel, and eight from Tooradin’s Aisakie O’hAilpin and Berwick pair Bryce Rutherford and Andrews. The Berwick skipper drew within one of Meyer after round 10 and charged to the lead in the latter rounds of the season. Gabriel would finish second, on 24 votes, but was ineligible to win the award. Andrews, who finished equal-second last year, despite playing only eight games, said he thoroughly enjoyed a full season of footy in 2017. “I had a bit of time off last year, and I think doing that really worked well for my footy,” the 26-year-old said. “I just wanted to get away, and I think doing that really re-energised my footy and I just feel a lot more motivated this year. I just felt like I needed to get fitter to move with the game, and I probably felt like I was getting a little bit too heavy and the game was going past me a bit. “I just wanted to take my fitness to the next level and that’s helped my footy a lot.” Andrews is widely regarded as the best gutrunner in the business, breaking down opposition tags with an unquenchable work ethic. He said it’s the part of his game that is the key to his success.

into the count. “No to be honest, there’s a lot of amazing players in our league, and I went away for a few games, so I honestly didn’t think I was a chance,” Cecil said, before explaining why she loves playing in defence. “I love playing goal keeper because I play with Sharni Lambden and she is absolutely incredible to play with and I love teaming up with her.” SEFNL AWARD WINNERS

Berwick skipper Madi Andrews, left, won his second SEFNL best and fairest award on Monday night. I never had the most talent, and I just prided myself on working harder than anyone else,” he said. “I would like to give a big thank you to the footy club, to Stew (coach Stewart Kemperman) for coming on board - he put a lot of faith in me this year - and a really big thank you to my old man (Bruce Andrews). “He’s played a really big part in my footy ca-

reer, he’s driven me all the way, and I wouldn’t be half the player I am right now without him.” And the A Grade netball best and fairest award was also dominated by past winners, with Cranbourne defender Tara Cecil now a three-time winner after a three-vote victory over Narre Warren’s 2014 winner Erin Clark. Clark charged through the pack to finish second, unable to catch the 2011 and 2013 winner who didn’t give herself much of a chance heading

Johnson’s rise to the top By David Nagel A switch from the floorboards to the football fields has paid off handsomely for Beaconsfield ruckman Samantha Johnson who took home the South Eastern Womens Football division two best and fairest award on Wednesday night. Johnson was joined by division one winner Amy Harrison from the Gippsland Maroons, and Development League winner Sophie Bolding from the Bass Coast Breakers, as the big winners on a night when the league celebrated its inaugural season of competition. Johnson’s rise to prominence has been most impressive, with the 25-year-old playing her first season of football after playing basketball since the age of seven. A shoulder injury was hampering her basketball career, so she decided to switch sports - a great move that has well and truly paid off. “I’m pretty shocked to be honest; it’s my first year of football so I wasn’t really expecting something like this to happen,” Johnson said, before explaining how she first became involved in the sport. “A couple of friends from school asked me to go the Narre Warren Football Club, but that didn’t end up going ahead. One of the guys from Beaconsfield - I’m pretty close with his sister - he asked me down to training and it all went pretty much from there.” Johnson, who played in Sunday’s grand final

win over Endeavour Hills, said she had enjoyed the roller-coaster ride of a football season. “With any sport you get the highs and the lows, but with football the massive part for me was just learning new things in a new sport that I’ve never tried before,” she said. “Mark Hornstra and Nicky Eakins, they got me there in the first place, and Scott Hilton my coach has been a massive support for me. He’s always had my back and believed in me and pushed me to my limits ... I just want to keep learning and see where it all takes me I guess.” The sky would appear to be the limit for the talented tall, who only truly believes now the words of those who have encouraged her along the way. “A lot of people have told me I have potential, but I’ve never really seen it in myself until tonight, being awarded the best and fairest. I’d love to see where it goes, but I’ll probably stick at Beaconsfield next year, I absolutely love the club and the support they’ve given me this year. But we’ll see what happens; I’m pretty much open to anything right now.” Harrison’s division one win was also surprising, given the Maroons missed out on a finals berth this season. But it’s not surprising given the football apprenticeship she has served under one of the greats of the women’s game. “I’ve only played footy for two or three years, but I had the best exposure imaginable, playing at the VU Western Spurs under Debbie

I’m a little bit overwhelmed to have won this actually, it’s something I wasn’t expecting considering the finish we had as a team.”

Extraordinary win to ’Rays By Nick Creely TAC CUP REVIEW - ELIMINATION FINAL On famous Victoria Park, a ground that is iconic in the landscape of Australian Rules football, the Dandenong Stingrays pulled off a comeback for the ages on Saturday afternoon to advance through to a preliminary final next week. Against arch rivals Eastern Ranges, the ‘Rays came from the clouds to clinch a famous 13-point victory after being down by as much as 51-points early in the third quarter. In a truly forgettable first half, in which the ‘Rays were made to look second rate, the Ranges punished their highly fancied opponents with potency in attack, destroying them on the outside to almost put the contest to bed. Star midfielder Hunter Clark didn’t mince words when describing his side’s first half, but said in the rooms during the long break there was a steely resolve about the group. “Heading into half time we were a bit down because we knew we were playing some pretty weak footy and not playing for each other, but the coaches and the players were full of encouragement and belief for one another,” he said. The comeback show began with the brilliance of Luke Davies-Uniacke, who roved a contest 35 out from goal, before steadying to kick a team-lifting goal. Davies-Uniacke - combined with Clark and Mitch Cotter in the guts lifted their rating, and Bailey Williams in the ruck started to win some crucial contests against Sam Hayes as the

Jai Nanscawen booted two clutch goals late for the 'Rays on Saturday. 168489

With the game on the line, the last half of stars such as Davies-Uniacke and Darcy were inspirational - Clark certainly agreed. “Lukey was huge all day and just kept playing for his team-mates and showed everyone why he is one of the best players in the country with his dominant game today. “Darc was also huge using his physical pressure and being a real presence and leader in the forward line for the younger boys down there and got his reward that he deserved. “They were both awesome for us.” The Stingrays were also well served by Oscar Clavarino, Josh Bateman and over-age pair Bailey Morrish and Mason De Wit.

TAC CUP game shifted in momentum. Despite dominating the territorial battle in the third term - kicking five goals to just one - the ‘Rays still needed to chase down a 23-point deficit in the final quarter. Davies-Uniacke once again got the ball rolling in the opening minute of the final term, chopping off a scrambled kick out of defence to set up a clever soccer goal from Jai Nanscawen in the square, and suddenly the margin was slashed to just 17-points. A relatively simple miss to Ranges youngster Jamieson Rossiter directly in front, only 15 seconds later, opened the door once again, and the ‘Rays

made them pay with another Nanscawen snap only five minutes later as a result of some fanatical forward line pressure. The ‘Rays didn’t stop there, with Jamie Plumridge eventually putting his side in front after some sublime evasion work from Davies-Uniacke in the pocket to set the goal up. And with powerful forward Riley D’Arcy (three goals) - who turned heads the most with a brilliant second half in the forward line - looking ominous in attack and with the midfield well and truly on top of the game, the ‘Rays kicked another two goals to ice an extraordinary victory that will go

down in folklore at Shepley Oval. Clark - who was once again outstanding through the midfield - said the turnaround came down to the simple things in what was a huge momentum builder coming into the prelim. “Not too much changed structurally (but) a few players were moved around but we just knew we needed to play as a team more and keep to our structure to give ourselves a chance going into the last,” he said. “It’s huge for our confidence because we rated Eastern as one of the top teams all year and to come back from 50 odd points just gives us belief against anyone.”

Cranbourne Football Club’s seniors may not have gone backto-back in 2017, but the Eagles brought home two pieces of silverware to ease the pain in Sunday’s Vic Metro Superules grand finals. With the Eagles going down to a brilliant Narre Warren lineup by 48-points the previous day in the SEFNL preliminary final, the pressure was on the old fellas to finish the season off on a high. Cranbourne’s Southern Supers met Mordialloc at Casey Fields on Sunday, looking to claim the flag with a rare, undefeated season after getting through the home-and-away season and first final flawless. Conversion was the key early for the Bloods, with the Eagles making the most of their chances in front of goal, and despite having equal the amount of scoring shots, was able to surge to a 10-point lead that couldn’t be surpassed. With star forward Shannon Deszcz (four goals) winding back the clock, the Eagles toyed with the Bloods, extending the margin at every change to claim an in the end cruisy victory, 12.15(87) to 3.8(26). The last quarter was particularly stellar - with a 35-point lead heading into the final change, the Eagles made sure there were no late scares, keeping the opposition scoreless while piling on an impressive but wayward 3.8 Apart from Deszcz, Adrian

Demons driven out By Nick Creely

VICTORIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE

In finals, nothing short of a four quarter effort ensures victory. And for Casey, they learnt the hardest lesson of all on Saturday against Richmond at Fortburn Stadium, going out in straight sets after a second quarter onslaught saw them unable to reel back a match-winning deficit. After taking a narrow two-point lead into quarter time, the signs were positive when Tom Bugg slotted a goal in the opening moments to give the Dees the dream start to the second. But from there disaster struck, and with it came a flurry of Tiger goals courtesy of a zippy small forward line containing names such as Shai Bolton, Connor Menadue, Sam Lloyd and Tyson Stengle, with the Demons conceding eight of the next nine majors to open up a 39-point half time deficit. It took just 15 minutes of the third quarter for Richmond and it’s 18 AFL-listed players to continue on their merry way, booting a further four goals to open up a mammoth 61-point lead. A couple of quick goals courtesy of Declan Keilty - who floated forward on ruckman Ben Griffiths - and Yillber Zijai, saw the Demons gain a little bit of momentum, and with it, the Casey that has graced the field for the majority of 2017 returned to its line breaking best.

Richmond's Jayden Short runs away with the footy on Saturday. Picture: COURTESY OF ADAM MCFARLANE Slowly chipping away at the deficit, another major to Keilty and a goal to Bugg saw the margin slashed to 37-points, as the Tigers struggled to slow the play down and get the ball into their prime ball movers’ hands. With only minutes remaining on the clock, Billy Stretch instilled a faint flicker of hope into his team-mates, kicking a ripping goal out of a stoppage from 45, before coolly slotting a set shot on the three quarter time siren only moments later to reduce the margin to a gettable 26-points. All-in-all, the Demons had kicked six unanswered goals in stoppage time. After Bugg converted his third of the match early in the third after

taking an uncontested grab only metres from goal, the Tigers managed to stem the flow and defensively stand their ground despite a trio of near misses late in the game weren’t converted. In the end, the deficit was far too great for a side that could only manage three finals-like quarters. “I’m frustrated, I’m annoyed, but at the end of the day you get the double chance for a reason but we just weren’t able to capitalise on it,” Casey coach Justin Plapp said. Despite the result that sees the Demons bundled out of the VFL premiership race, Plapp is proud of his side’s resolve to fight back.

Top honour goes to Fritsch By Nick Creely Rising Casey Demons forward Bayley Fritsch has capped off an outstanding breakout season in the VFL with recognition at Monday’s VFL Best and Fairest night at Crown Palladium. On Monday night, Fritsch was awarded the prestigious Fothergill-Round Medal as the best young VFL player in the league. The 20-year-old young medium forward was a shining light for the Dees throughout 2017, kicking 42 goals from

19 matches and became one of the best contested marks in the competition. Fritsch was plucked from Division 4 Eastern Football Club Coldstream and has endured two injury ravaged years at Casey before finally making his VFL debut this season. The last nine recipients of the award, including the likes of Michael Barlow, Michael Hibberd, Kane Lambert and Robin Nahas, have all gone on to be drafted to AFL clubs the next season. Fritsch - who will also be

attending this year’s AFL State Combine as AFL clubs take notice - was also named on a halfforward flank in the VFL Team of the Year. The Demons also snared another major award for the evening, with former Sandringham Dragon and now Casey jet Goy Lok taking out the A.Todd Medal as the Development League’s best-and-fairest. Last season former Casey ruckman Oscar McInerney took out the award and was subsequently rookie-listed by the Brisbane Lions.

Falcons aim to break drought By Nick Creely

Service awards at season opener BERWICK BOWLING The official opening of the Berwick Bowling Club for the 2017-'18 season took place on Saturday 2 September. The turnout was impressive with nigh on 150 members attending, most being resplendent in their freshly laundered uniforms. The event was opened with an address by the chair of the Bowls Section, Jeff Janetzki, after which a delicious lunch of barbecue chicken, potato salad and coleslaw was provided by the very organised and hard-working team of volunteers in the kitchen. Board of management chairman, Ed Wilson, then introduced the director of Bowls Victoria, Marilla Rootsey, who presented 90th Birthday certificates to Harold Hack and Rino de Bastiani, both of whom still play regularly and with great commitment. Jim Blewett was also a recipient but

Saturday’s Southern Football Division 3 grand final at Jack Barker Oval is set to be a significant milestone in the history of the Endeavour Hills Football Club. Not only will the Falcons play off for their chance at glory against local rivals Doveton Eagles, but the club will be playing for its first piece of senior silverware - ever. Coming into the 2017 season, the Falcons had never played a senior final - let alone book a ticket to the big dance. Senior coach Rob Dipper is trying to keep a lid on things at Barry Simon Reserve despite the obvious excitement, and said that they are trying to approach the massive contest in the same manner they always do. “We haven’t changed too much - we did P3 recovery in Berwick last Tuesday, and the guys just got into the pools and threw the balls around,” he said of the side’s preparation for the biggest game in the club’s history. “This week it’s business as normal - we won’t change our preparation too much I wouldn’t have thought.” The Falcons and Eagles have squared the ledger this season, with both sides tasting success against the other at different stages. Dipper said past results mean nothing now, with finals football a completely different kettle of fish. “Come finals footy it’s a different ball game - if you try and draw something from a homeand-away game it’s probably not going to be the same,” he said. “The first time we played them was early in the season, and they (Doveton Eagles) really did a number on us, and it was about nine-goals, but our side from then is completely different, and when we beat them later in the season we understand they had a few missing - they are a really great side. “We have to be on from the start or they will run all over us - they are a really strong side with big bodies.” Season 2017 has been nonetheless a major success for the club - after finishing third on the ladder, the Falcons defeated Ashwood by 21-points in the qualifying final, before an incredible semifinal win over Hallam saw them earn the week off and direct entry into the biggest game of the season. “We set some rules and standards that we wanted to deliver on this year, and that’s on and off the field - one of our main goals was to play finals, and to finish third on the ladder and to win our first and second finals was probably not where we thought we’d be,” Dipper said. “We were confident we would make finals we feel we’re in a good enough position now and what will be will be (on Saturday). “We’ve played some great footy over the last month, the boys are in good form and we owe it to ourselves to finish off our hard work.“ 12351514-EPJ19-17

Underdog vs invincible By David Nagel The irresistible force versus the immovable object - it’s a match made in heaven when a frugal Berwick and a free-scoring Narre Warren collide on grand final day for the first time in history at Holm Park Reserve on Saturday. Talk about precious - the silverware on offer is such a seriously precious commodity for both clubs. Berwick, a club that has existed since the 1890s, has won just seven flags, while the Magpies, formed in 1953, have nine. Just 16 joyous days have been celebrated between two clubs that have an overall existence of roughly 190 years - it’s bloody incredible when you think about it! Berwick average a premiership every 6600 days, while the Magpies are cruising in comparison about one every 2500 ... told you - they’re hard to win. And this week will be no different. Narre Warren coach Heath Black will take the underdog into the contest; he likes it that way and especially so when the opponent has not tasted defeat this season. Black has felt that type of pressure before, and can’t wait for the opportunity to strike. “That’s what it is, an opportunity, and I’ve been involved in a team that has gone through the year undefeated, later in my career, and the team we played didn’t get within 10 goals during the season and beat us by eight points in the big one,” Black said.. “We won’t tap into that too much, but I do love being the underdog and that’s what we are this week. What happens during the home and away season means nothing this week ... we both start from scratch.” And starting from scratch has been the Magpies one-wood in recent times, burying Beaconsfield

with a 7.2 to 1.2 first quarter in the first semi-final before backing that up with an even better 7.2 to 1.0 opening onslaught against Cranbourne last week. And it was their former skipper Michael Collins who has twice led the way. Cranbourne paid Collins absolutely no respect last week and paid a very heavy price indeed, with Narre Warren’s greatest ever player racking up some incredible first quarter numbers. He had 17 possessions in the first term alone, gathering seven kicks and 10 handballs - also taking five marks and kicking two inspirational goals from outside 50. One man who had a perfect view of the action was Berwick coach Stewart Kemperman, who must have been astounded with the latitude, afforded the Magpies star. Collo wins probably 75 percent of his one-on-ones - but expect Kemperman to make him earn those possessions this week, because a repeat of that 17-possession first quarter would spell some serious trouble for the Wickers. Give players like Nick Scanlon, Aaron Wilson, Jake Richardson, Luke Cody and Stewie Scanlon some galloping room and the Wickers will be right on the back foot. But they’re an amazing football team Berwick - and certainly no one-trick ponies. Their defence, led by Michael Johnson, Riley Heddles, Michael Riseley and Luke Sheppard is the most attacking in the league, attacking in the way they defend, and even more attacking with ball in hand. Players like Ash Smith, Micky Harold, Luke Sheppard, Andrews, Johnson and Riseley - deserve to go down as greats of this footy club, and will take a significant step on that journey by claiming a 28-point victory.

League MVP Bryce Rutherford will be a key player for Berwick on Picture: ROB CAREW Saturday. 170315

Eagles pecked out of sight By David Nagel Narre Warren’s watershed moment has arrived after the mighty Magpies ended the brave run of Cranbourne with a 42-25 victory in Saturday’s preliminary final at Pakenham. The dominant team of the last two years, the back-to-back reigning champions will now face their nemesis of 2017 - Tooradin-Dalmore - in a grand final that looms as the landmark moment in their recent history. But hold that thought for a moment - first we need to dissect the Magpies advance to the big dance. Cranbourne came out firing, taking the early lead, before the Magpies settled to take an 11-6 advantage into quarter time. Their first-quarter dominance stemmed from precise ball-movement through the middle of the court from the likes of Erin Clark (wing defence), Leigh Taylor (wing attack) and Britt Mashado (centre). That last feed into goalers Chloe Phillips (goal shooter) and Tayla Shannon (goal attack) was crucial, with Eagles’ defenders Tara Cecil (goal keeper) and Sharni Lambden (goal defence) the best in the business at picking off the loose ball. But, despite the Eagles fight, there was an air of inevitability about this one after quarter time, the Magpies gradually pulling away with a superior brand of netball. They stretched

their five-goal lead to eight by half time and had a grand final berth assured with a 10-goal break at the three-quarter time. “We went in with a game plan, and there were definitely times when we strayed from those plans, but we got the job done,” said Magpies cocoach Jade Heinrich. But the Magpies now face clearly the biggest challenge of their threeyear journey under the leadership of Jade and her husband Greg. The Magpies have been the masters of performing at their absolute best on the big stage, thumping Hampton Park 59-34 in the 2015 decider and having a comfortable 44-31 win over Beaconsfield last year. But they won’t be the red-hot favourites this time around! This year they’ve suffered backto-back losses for the first time over the journey, and were dealt a savage blow by the Seagulls in the second semi-final. Kelly Andrews’ girls came out firing, producing a physicality that led to a commanding 43-28 victory and a direct passage to the only game that truly matters. And it also gave them a 2-1 advantage over the Magpies this year. Jade knows this is a massive challenge, but is confident her girls are up for the fight.

“They set the tone last time, but we learned a lot and we know what Tooradin will throw at us this time around,” Jade said. “It’s definitely our biggest challenge, but we want the competition to get better and we’re ready to throw everything at this game. If we win, we deserve all the accolades that come our way, and if we lose, so be it. It should be a great game and a huge challenge for both clubs. We’re hungry to take them on again.” This is a genuine 50-50 contest, where every possession and every sacrifice for a team-mate could make all the difference as to who has their name inscribed on the 2017 premiership cup. The Seagulls, chasing their first flag since 2006, the Magpies facing the moment of truth that will define them as either a dynasty - or just a very, very good netball team. Who will win the war of attrition through the midcourt? Will Sara Duncan, Emma Iacovou, Jess Cox and Ebony Dolan be able to sustain their effort over four quarters or will the grand final experience of Clark, Taylor, and gun-defender Tracey Dell, get the Magpies home in a close one? Questions, questions, questions ... and they’ll all be answered by 4pm on Saturday.

Narre Warren midcourter Britt Mashado will look to hurt Tooradin with her precision passing in Saturday's grand final at Holm Park Reserve. 172643 Pictures: ROB CAREW

Motoring

 Reviews and news…

Astra’s a timeless classic By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring Holden is very serious about its smallto-medium Astra range. In December 2016 it launched a five-door hatch; a four-door sedan - the subject of this test in topline LTZ format - came out in June this year, and a station wagon will be added to before the end of the year. Sales of the hatch weren't as high as GM-Holden anticipated and weren't helped by the traditionally slow January/ February holiday and back-toschool periods so recommended prices were dropped a few months after the launch to try and kick things along. Astra sedan prices probably started lower than originally anticipated, from $20,490 through to $29,790, putting them right into the thick of the fray in this class. Dealers are under pressure to get the Astra range up and running ASAP and can often be talked into picking up some, maybe even all, of the on-road charges. The Astra sedan is built in a GM factory in South Korea. It's finished to the very high standard that has impressed us in vehicles from that country in recent years. Holden Astra sits on all-new vehicle modular architecture that trims weight by as much as 120 kg compared to the old model. This adds performance at the same time as fuel consumption decreases. The shape of Astra sedan is neat

Model range Astra LS sedan: $20,490 (manual), $22,490 (automatic) Astra LS+ sedan: $22,740 (automatic) Astra LT sedan: $25,790 (automatic) Astra LTZ sedan: $29,790 (automatic)

Neat styling that's likely to remain timeless is a feature of the new Holden Astra sedan. enough but doesn’t really break any new ground in its rear end. A sporting rear lip spoiler is fitted to the two topline models, the LT and LTZ. Infotainment is centred around a colour touchscreen that’s neatly integrated into the stylish dashboard. It uses the latest Holden MyLink system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There’s USB input with iPod connectivity. A clever design feature is the thumb rest to steady your hand while reaching the screen with your forefinger. There's a comprehensive range. The entry level Astra LS has 16-inch alloy wheels, a 7.0-inch colour touchscreen, steering wheel mounted controls, a six

speaker audio system and cruise control. Astra LS+ adds a leather-faced steering wheel, automatic high beam, LED daytime running lights (DRLs), Holden Eye forward facing camera, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, forward distance indicator, and forward collision alert. The Astra LT features 17-inch alloy wheels, an 8.0-inch touchscreen and DAB+ radio. Heated door mirrors are handy in wet weather. It also has front park assist, side blindspot alert, passive entry, push-button start, advanced park assist, and automatic wipers. The topline Astra LTZ we tested had 18-inch alloy wheels, climate

controlled air, an electric sunroof, chromed exterior window surrounds, chromed interior highlights combined with piano black (the latter, as usual, picking up dust within minutes of it being brushed off…) and heated front seats. The only engine offered in Holden Astra sedan is a 1.4-litre turbo-petrol producing 110 kW of power and 240 Nm of torque in the six-speed automatic we tested. Astra hatch comes with this engine, but has the option of a more powerful 1.6 unit. This may, or may not, be offered in the sedan later. On the safety front, all models have six airbags, electronic stability control (ESC), automatic headlights, a rear view camera and rear park assist. Features are added to as the model grades increase, for details the Models section of this report. The front seats are a good size, and comfortable in normal driving, there's less side support than you may like if you do hammer it along. Try for yourself on the sort of roads you normally drive on, and perhaps take some potential passengers along for the ride.

Rear seats have space for two adults and they will have enough legroom unless those in the front like their seats well back. A third grown-up can fit without too much hip and shoulder rubbing. Three kids is a more likely load. The boot is well shaped and a good size, its added volume being an advantage in any sedan when compared with a hatch. However, the coupe-like slope at Astra's rear does mean it can't carry very bulky items. The 1.4-litre turbo engine is a lively unit that’s a real pleasure to sit behind. There’s some turbo lag, but once that has passed there’s plenty of torque to provide good hill climbing and to safe overtaking. Fuel consumption was in the fives and sixes during motorway sections of our drive route. This rose to seven to nine litres per 100 kilometres around town. Perfectly acceptable in this class and a sign that the reduced weight of the car certainly plays its part. GM-Holden engineers and stylists were heavily involved in the global scene from the earliest days of this Astra’s design. So it doesn't surprise that its steering and ride are very much tailored to Australian driver tastes - and harsh Aussie road conditions. Commodore buyers moving down to an Astra will have plenty to like. Contact Barry Bourke Holden, 755 Princes Highway, Berwick. Phone 9707 2222.
