MORE TO LOVE The editor’s desk Despite the long dry spell, it’s still hard to fathom how some people now have no water at their homes. Many are queuing for water trucks to deliver and the queues are growing longer. How are they managing to wash themselves, their clothes? And do they have pets or livestock? How are they getting water? What’s happening to the wildlife? Is there some way we as a community could help? The weeks of dry weather are taking their toll. Firefighters have warned of the region’s tinderbox conditions and the threat of fire and now water resources are running low. In other news, estate agent Tom Hoffermann has given a sizeable donation to the Coast Guard and questioned why the association isn’t funded by government. Fair point. Also this week we look forward to the Noosa Country Show which kicks off tomorrow with a wide range of good country fun and entertainment. Enjoy the holiday. ● - Margaret Maccoll

THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT… TEST OF SKILLS ON SHOW The countdown to the Noosa Country Show is almost at an end with only one sleep left for show goers and volunteers keen for the popular country show to begin. Five-year-old Amerie Hilliard loves walking around the show with her family and seeing “the huge cows” and entering competitions “to show everyone what I’m good at”. Volunteer Davina Foster loves being part of a team that is able to pull together a great country show. As a mother of boys she finds that the wood chop is a popular attraction and the whole family likes to stay late until the rodeo ends. The Noosa Country Show on 15 and 16 September is packed full of activities which are set to please including Rooftop Express, the young farmer’s challenge and everyone’s favourite, the loveable Muttley’s Dog Parade. The Rooftop Express, delivered by equine industry identity Dave Manchon, is a first-class arena show that promises good old-fashioned Aussie fun with amazing horse feats and cattle stunts and plenty of laughs. The performance brings together horses, cattle, dogs, stockmen and women as well as trucks and utes in an action-packed event. The young farmers’ challenge was first held last year and will return by popular demand. Through a competitive but fun format, the next generation of farmers will join

A traditional country show, it aims to showcase the variety of agricultural industries within the region and through a variety of competition sections will help celebrate the diversity of people and the talents that live in our community. The animal section includes equestrian, stud beef, dairy cattle and dogs sections. SAME SEX COUPLE SEEKS RESPECT Being married for long-term partners Kirsty Patten and Linda Boyes would mean recognition and acceptance in the community of their commitment to each other. Kirsty said marriage equality wouldn’t change the way they lived but saw it as the last hurdle to gaining equal respect. “Adoption is legal for gay couples. There is access to IVF. It’s just about that recognition,” she said. “To be able to say my wife, my husband, to be able to be called a widow or widower and have that partnership acknowledged.” The couple have a nine-year-old girl, Bonnie, who was unaware before seeing media reports discussing
Kirsty Patten and Linda Boyes with Bonnie. marriage equality that her parents couldn’t marry. “We’ve lived in country Queensland and not once has there been an issue about having two mums,” Kirsty said. “Her life is as ordinary as other families.”
Kirsty can’t see the “big deal” about changing the legislation as has occurred in other countries. “Now society is totally ready for this. I feel totally accepted and I always have. “Everybody is pretty sick of hearing about it. I just think it’s such a simple thing to do. It seems like we’ve done so many surveys what is the justification of spending all this money when the outcome of it is not binding.” Kirsty said if the legislation was passed she would have no issue with churches choosing not to marry gays but would have an issue with discrimination from wedding services refusing her business. ●
Many Noosa residents who are reliant on tank water have run dry and been told they will have to wait for weeks for new supplies. Water carters are flat out trying to keep up with demand with orders now backed up for two to five weeks. Michelle Cain of Weyba Water said she hadn’t seen such a bad situation in the 12 years that she had lived in the area and been in business. “I think people have been waiting for rain and usually we do get rain. I think it’s catching everybody off guard. It’s not just small tanks its people with big tanks of 80,000 litres. It’s quite sad to have people completely out.” Noosa Water Tankers is booked out for five weeks, having increased its cartage from two to three loads a day to eight to 10. “A lot of people are desperate and there’s nothing more we can do,” a spokesman said. Colin White of Blue Waters Deliveries of Cooroibah said that the situation was made worse because the mains point at Noosaville had been broken for a week reducing their water pressure to a third of the normal rate. “It’s taking us 35 minutes to load - it usually takes us 10 minutes,” he said. Some people have taken to social media to seek help and others are paying for water to be delivered from outside the region. Unitywater customer and community executive manager Judy Bailey said the company was aware that a water main had broken under a road last week. “Jobs are prioritised according to a number of factors including impacts to customers, impacts to the environment, rate and volume of leaks and safety of staff and the community,” she said. “The leak has been isolated but, as the break is under the road, we are working with Noosa Council to arrange traffic management and undertake the repair. The repair is planned for Thursday 14 September.” Ms Bailey said the fill station was operating at about two thirds of its capacity and apologised for the inconvenience. “Just eight minutes away is our Tewantin fill station which we invite our water carrier customers to use,” she said. ● 201721004-LB21-17

WILD KOALAS FAST DISAPPEARING Council had encouraged her to “think this community can make a difference.” And there is no time to lose with the situation she believes having become “critical”. “We’re running out of space for koalas and we’re running out of koalas,” she said. She said Queensland was clearing land at a rate of 300,000 hectares a year which is worse than that occurring in the rainforests of South America or Borneo and the situation is becoming dire for koalas. “If you look at the land clearing already, it’s land we can’t replace,” she said. “(Developers) offset the trees but it may not be where the koalas are and it may be seven years before the trees provide food.” Determining the remaining numbers of koalas in the region is a project underway with only gestimates having been relied on to date. The group believes these indicate there has been an 80-90 per cent drop in south east Queensland in the past few years. Meghan said anecdotally people said they used to see koalas all the time but now said they hadn’t seen one in years. The group has been supporting research being carried out at the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) through funding of equipment used with detection dogs. USC molecular ecologist Celine Frere has been mapping the numbers and whereabouts of koalas across the Noosa Shire with their help and funding from the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation (NBRF). Celine said recent research focused on areas where there were no records of koala populations using the dogs trained ability to detect the smell of koala scats (poo). She said the completed field work resulted in the collection of 128 scats that will now be sent for genetic analysis. The analysis will determine whether the koalas are inbred or closely related and from this information, they can deduce where they have come from, she said. Celine’s research has already enabled mapping of the location of koalas in the region. She said one of the surprising results was the finding of koalas in unexpected places. “It is showing us koalas are living in an urban footprint,” she said.
Celine said while people expected to find koalas in pristine native habitat the research found they were living in trees beside roads and in degraded areas. She said much more research was needed to find out more about the complicated species. Celine hopes to continue research with NBRF funding under its big ideas project while other research at USC is also looking for funding. USC microbiologists, Professor Peter Timms and Dr Adam Polkinghorne, have spent years developing a vaccine to fight chlamydia, and after a series of trials in captive animals, they have conducted the world’s first successful trial of a vaccine against chlamydia in koalas in the wild. While the success of the project has shown good immune responses to the vaccine, and importantly, decreased chlamydia infection levels, it relies on more funding to progress. Meghan said the sharing of knowledge was among the aims of Queensland Koala Crusaders. “Ongoing our focus is to work together,” she said. “If we keep working in isolation, we’ll never make a difference. “We need to have a consistent plan where we all work together.” Preserving those surviving koalas depends of several factors including the enlisting of landowners to plant koala food trees, the control of dogs and looking at ways to reduce road kills. “We have to look at the roads,” she said. “There are underpasses on Eenie Creek Road but they’re not well maintained. “The trees hang over the road. The koalas can get on to the road. “It’s not natural for koalas to go underground. We should look at land bridges” During Save the Koala month of September, the Queensland Koala Crusaders are crowdfunding to raise $30,000 to plant 10,000 koala food trees and to encourage more people to join them. She said their website had 28,000 likes, but “koalas don’t need likes they need leaves”. She is urging people to donate the cost of a couple of cups of coffee to their cause. ueensland Koala Crusaders president Meghan Halverson believes without action this may be the last generation to see wild koalas. A New Yorker Meghan arrived in Australia in 2009, and while volunteering with Australia Zoo became aware of the increasing numbers of koalas admitted to the wildlife hospital for illness or injury with not all returning to the wild. Coming from urbanised areas of the US, Meghan and her husband were astounded at their ability to walk through Noosa Heads National Park and see wild koalas. When they first arrived, it was almost a certainty to see a koala on any visit. That’s not the situation now. “In the national park there’s four koalas we keep an eye on, but we’re hopeful there’s at least 12,” she said. “They move around a lot. We’ve seen them on Hastings Street. They go to Laguna Lookout. Sunshine Beach has a couple. It’s still not a sustainable number”. Last week a koala named Hilarie was returned to the park after being treated at Australia Zoo for the sexually transmitted disease chlamydia. Queensland Koala Crusaders was formed by members drawn from existing koala advocacy groups and followed the Sunshine Coast Koala Summit held in 2012. The group’s aims include the creation of safe havens and corridors for koalas, raising public awareness of their plight and bringing together researchers and conservation organisations. A separate ambition is to set up a wild koala habitat combined with tourism and education potential. “The ultimate goal is to have a sanctuary so people can go and see koalas in the wild,” Meghan said. “It would depend on where we could acquire land”. Potential sites identified by the group include the vacant Noosa TAFE which backs on to koala habitat and would be an ideal environmental centre, but this goal requires funds the group is yet to obtain. Currently the group is working to create more communities so koalas can thrive on their own. It has worked with both the Sunshine Coast and Noosa councils on their koala management plans. Meghan said the “collaborative effort” with Noosa

The show will also be open on Saturday 16 September, from 9am to 4pm, and Sunday 17 September, from 10am to 3.30pm. The annual art show is dedicated
to the memory of the late Gwen Blair who founded the Tinbeerwah Art Group in 1997 making it one of the longest running art groups on the Sunshine Coast. “This year the art group has been fortunate to have award winning artists Noreen Flood, Pam Taylor, Victoria Fitzpatrick and Helen Lawson as our guest tutors," TAG art show co-ordinator Jan Cooke said. Tom Offermann with Coast Guard Commander Andrew Leak.
STRONG SHOW OF SUPPORT When real estate principal Tom Offermann donated $82,500 to the Coast Guard on Monday he told members it was a pleasure to support the association and asked why the government didn’t. He said when he saw members asking for dollar coins at the markets and Noosa ferry he felt for them, knowing their time would be better spent in their work. “It’s something I felt government should be funding,” he said. “When I was young the ambulance
had to go out and fund-raise.” Tom said his donation would be only a small part of the money they need to operate the lifesaving service. He said he wondered what they would do if they needed to purchase a new vessel. “I live by the river and see a lot of their work,” he said. “We feel a social responsibility to give back to the community. It’s for a really valuable service that everyone appreciates.” Tom supports several services in the community including the surf lifesaving club, which he has backed for the past 25 years. ●

PRIDE OF SERVICE STOLEN BY MARGARET MACCOLL A split-second decision not to wear a chain carrying her Great Uncle Albert Marlow’s war medallion to work on Wednesday is weighing heavily on Allison Paterson, as it was stolen that day from her Peregian Springs home. “I feel like I’ve let him down,” she said. All five of the Marlow brothers, including her granddad and Uncle Albert, were presented with medallions by the people of their home town of Mologa in Victoria as they went to war. July marked the centenary of Albert’s death on the Western Front at the age of 19. Three of the brothers were killed. Albert is buried in Belgium along with his brother George. Their big brother Charlie is buried in France. This is the second time the medallion was lost to the family. The family believe it must have been stolen a few years ago. They didn’t realise it was missing until Allison was trawling the internet one day for Albert Marlow and saw the medallion for sale in a secondhand store in Brisbane. “It hadn’t been reported as stolen so we had to pay $550 to get it back,” she said. “It felt like we were bringing him home. “I found a fob chain and I used to wear it if I needed courage. I usually

Albert Marlow wear it to work. It was a split-second decision, I wore another necklace.” Allison said when she got home from work at St Andrew’s Anglican College she discovered “someone had been through the house”.
She said other items were taken including jewellery and some food from the fridge, but no amount of insurance could ever replace Albert’s medallion. “If there is just one thing that I can have returned it is this, one of the most precious items our family owns,” she said. To the people who stole it, you know where we live. With all my heart, I ask for you to dig deep and find the courage and way to safely return it to us.” The medallion is easily identified. It bears the Australian emblems of an emu and kangaroo in rose gold with the letters AWM on the shield and on the back the words: “Presented to Albert Marlow from his Mologa Friends”. Allison said the police had been “wonderful and very thorough” in their investigation of the robbery. ●

CONTAINER REFUND ON AGENDA
VOTE ON ARTCYCLE PRIZE
Finalists in Noosa Council’s ArtCycle Art Prize have been named and now it’s up to the community to decide the winner. Inspired by the council’s Toward Zero Waste campaign, the ArtCycle Art Prize challenges entrants to get artistic with rubbish or old unwanted items. The council’s waste education officer Emma Menzies said the fun challenge highlights the importance of re-using, repurposing and recycling to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill. Voting in the ArtCycle Art Prize runs from 9 September to 2 October. To view the ArtCycle finalists and vote visit the gallery or log on to the website at www. noosaregionalgallery.com.au Winners will be announced Friday 6 October and the exhibition will run until 15 October. ●
BY MARGARET MACCOLL Living without plastic bags and the benefits to be gained from cashing in on a container refund scheme will be on the agenda of a forum organised by Noosa MP Glen Elmes on Tuesday 19 September. Hosted by Toby Hutcheon of Boomerang Alliance the forum follows the passing of State Government legislation last week to ban single-use plastic bags and introduce a container refund scheme (CRS) with the law to become effective from July 2018. Toby said South Australia had the CRS for the past 40 years with groups benefitting from the proceeds. He said the SA Scout movement gained about $2.8 million a year from the scheme. “It means about $60 million for the community sector,” he said. Toby said CRS provided a real opportunity for organisations to make some money. He said if organisations had a base like a clubhouse they could set up a cage for collecting cans and bottles and then would need to rely on members of the community to donate them rather than obtain the refund themselves. “In Redlands last year, an MP organised a competition between schools to collect cans and bottles. In one month, schools collected 100,000 cans and bottles. If every can and

Toby Hutcheon of Boomerang Alliance. bottle is worth 10 cents it can be a real attraction,” he said. Toby said the forum was one of many Boomerang Alliance would be conducting across Queensland, but the interest received from Noosa was greater than any other region. In parliament last week, Mr Elmes praised both the Noosa community for its passion to protect its environment and the achievement of bipartisan
support for the legislation. “While we trail other states and many countries around the world, this legislation will not only achieve obvious environmental outcomes; it will arrest a staggering acceptance that waste is an unavoidable by-product of living in the 21st century,” he said. The forum will be held at The J in Noosaville on Tuesday 19 September at 5pm. ●
The region’s food industry will be showcased on a “Favours of the Sunshine Coast” stand for the first time at Fine Food Australia in Sydney in September. The initiative is one of a number that the Sunshine Coast Council and Food and Agribusiness Network (FAN) are partnering on to drive new growth opportunities in the region’s food and agribusiness industry. NEWS SYMBOL OF THEIR SERVICE SHINES “The wonderful thing about public memorials is they are a present and visible symbol of others who have sacrificed their lives so we can enjoy ours.” This was stated by Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington at the launch last Friday in Pomona of the Noosa Library Service’s new book “Noosa Remembers - A history of the WWI memorials of Noosa Shire.” “This book builds on the 2015
project known as “Noosa War Front” which explored the way the Noosa community traversed the war years. “It is significant,” he said, “that today, the date chosen for the launch, represents the 100-year anniversary and dedication of the Shire of Noosa’s Roll of Honour which originally hung in the former shire chambers in Pomona and now hangs in the foyer of the council building at Tewantin. “It’s interesting, also, that Pomona has been chosen for the book launch because it arguably has more historic
buildings than any other town in the shire.” Authors of the book are freelance heritage consultant Joe Hextall and Noosa Council heritage librarian, Jane Harding. “They have created a fascinating book based on solid research. It is an ongoing record of our local history,” Mr Wellington said. Copies of the book are available free from Noosa Library Service branches. It will be distributed to local schools and organisations. ●

NEWS
COUNCIL TO OWN IT Seqwater has given the go-ahead to transfer ownership of the Noosa Botanic Gardens back to Noosa Council after nine years' ownership, and plan for a formal handover ceremony later this year. Seqwater spokesman Mike Foster said the handover resulted from working with the Noosa Council and the community. He said Seqwater planned to deliver a number of key projects in the region over the next few years including an upgrade of Lake Macdonald. Noosa Council Mayor Tony
Wellington said the land had been transferred to Seqwater as a result of a restructure of Queensland’s water supply in 2008. “Despite the land ownership situation, council has continued to maintain the gardens, with considerable help from the Friends of Noosa Botanic Gardens and volunteers,” he said. “Council has budgeted to undertake a master planning process for the Botanic Gardens, so the agreement with Seqwater is very timely. The agreement involves a
reconfiguration of Seqwater’s property (via boundary realignments) to split the lake and foreshore land into separate parcels with council also acquiring, at no cost, Lake Macdonald Park including the boat ramp. As part of the deal, council will also be acquiring the Lake Macdonald Park next to the Botanic Gardens, including the boat ramp.” The Noosa Botanic Gardens were the brainchild of resident Ida Duncan in the 1980s and opened in 1990. Emma Middleton comes to River Read.
DADDY LION PLAYS GAMES Join a special children's book launch at the River Read this school holidays with local children’s author Emma Middleton. Local picture book author Emma Middleton will launch her debut picture book The Lion in our Living Room on Saturday 30 September at The River Read Bookshop from noon to 1pm. Emma will present a fun and interactive workshop involving storytelling, art demonstrations, puppetry, craft and song. The Lion in our Living Room has been receiving excellent reviews; ‘A perfect picture book for reading aloud.’ Thuy On (The Big Issue) The story is entertaining young audiences, from the very first page when Tom and Tilly’s dad
playfully warns them to, ’...Be careful at the door, you never know who might come knocking with his giant paw.’ As we wonder if the mighty lion will come today, Briony Stewart’s detailed illustrations cleverly provide us with clues; the swish of a tail, or a revealing shadow. When the mighty lion finally arrives it is learnt this is no ordinary lion. This is daddy lion, who plays rollicking games and reads wonderful stories. This beautiful rhyming picture book for children from about three to seven years celebrates the love between parent and child, the power of imagination and the incredibly fun-filled delight of anticipation. RSVP to The River Read at enquiries@theriverread.com. au or (07) 5473 0483. ●

IT’S NONE OF OUR BUSINESS BUT … ON A KOALA CRUSADE The Queensland Koala Crusaders raised $2000 last week of the $30,000 they aim to raise over the month to plant 10,000 koala food trees in the Noosa Shire. More than 100 people attended a DoodleJam event at Noosa Arts Cafe last Tuesday to add their doodles and cash to their crowdfunding campaign. Wildlife conservationist Bob Irwin provided the first doodle on canvases that were added to throughout an evening of entertainment with Melony Breasts as MC. QKC president Meghan Halverson said the group’s ultimate goal was to help create protected areas and connecting corridors that provide sanctuary and allow the koala to thrive and regenerate. Author Edward Dregg said he had changed the names in his novel to “protect the guilty” and cleared it with all the criminals - but who will you recognise when you read No One in Particular? The author arrived in Noosa in the 1960s. Originally from Birmingham, he’d been travelling around South East Asia when he needed a break and ended up in his version of paradise. The book tells the story of his journey from the grey, smoky city of Birmingham to the pristine beaches of Noosa that was filled with hippies from the 1940s when he arrived - but how has it changed. “It was fabulous. This town has grown on crime and corruption. I’ve seen it evolve. This place is not what it was,” he said. Annie from Annie’s Books describes the book as “as a rollicking tale”. Annie has organised an author talk with Edward Dregg on the footpath outside Annie’s Books in Peregian Village at 6pm on 28 September. ●

THE LOWDOWN
These school holidays, there is plenty to do with the young’uns, but what about the other half? What about the big’uns? More than anything, the big kids, tweens and teens need to be off the screens as much as possible.
1
2
3
Play fun games in the backyard, like badminton, volleyball, croquet, or bean bag toss. Find a cheap set in an op-shop or hit the shops and buy one or two yard games which the big kids can play. Cook! Don’t let the moans and groans deter you! Just buy up the ingredients and rally them up. Think yummy treats like brownies or chocolate crackles so they are excited to get in and do it. Get creative without finger paints and cotton wool. Big kids will enjoy tie-dying old T-shirts into funky patterns or making their own slime (google how - there’s loads of ways).
Q&A
Cherry Ripe old age
The hilarious and talented Cherry Ripe from the Cherry Ripes Musical Comedy Duo hails from the country in Kandanga in the Mary Valley. Her quirky style and personality have made her a known face in the Noosa Shire on and off the stage. How did you get into music? My sister and Ruby and I used to play at the local church in Kandanga. I played the organ and Ruby played the wash board. The locals kept telling us we should be on the stage but we didn’t realise they meant the last stage out of town. We used to entertain the locals at the pub and they’d pay us to stop. We were both teachers at one stage. I retired due to illness and fatigue - the students were sick and tired of me - and Ruby retired, too, due to all the tantrums and bad behaviour - the students couldn’t put up with her behaviour any longer. Who inspires you? Our dogs. They are so patient and tolerant. They seem to be the only ones who don’t run away when we sing. They inspire me to keeping writing songs and keep belting out the naughty toones. What CD are you loving right now? Our Cherry Ripe CD called Cherryatrics.
Let’s grow food on the footpath, Let’s grow food in the park, No more lawns to mow each week Or trees that drop their bark. Lawns waste lots of water, Sun and good soil too; Better to grow some veges and fruit, Food for me and You.
Cherry and Ruby. We have some great songs I wrote and sing and play ukulele and keyboards and Ruby accompanies me on the drums and with great back up harmonies. They include songs about my Facebook addiction, on-line mating, older ladies, and the comedy version of Hallelujah which would put a smile on Leonard Cohen’s face. Our album is better than a chook raffle. I’m also loving the newest song I wrote called Grow Fruit, Grow Love. A song written for the Buderim Urban Food Street. I like to write songs about local causes as well as the funny parodies. It goes like this -
Most memorable gig? The Adelaide Fringe Festival last February. We performed 18 shows in 10 days. We were lucky enough to be asked to perform live on an ABC radio broadcast to the Scotland Fringe Festival. The next best gig is coming up on 2 September at the Maleny Music Festival. It’s a wonderful festival everyone should get to. We performed there last year and it was a hoot. How would you describe your musical style? Well, some people call the genre of our songs a ‘fusion of folk, country, blues and parodies’, but I tend to think of it as more of a ‘conFusion’. What’s something on your bucket list? To find a fella! I’m lookin’ for one who likes wrinkly, saggy boobed, grey haired old ladies who like to have lots of laughs about growing old disgracefully.

BY DAMIEN MASSINGHAM Noosa continues to increase its impressive share of high-spending international visitors with record growth in spend, visitor nights and numbers. The latest International Visitor Survey results for the year ending June 2017 Damien Massingham. CEO Tourism Noosa reveal increases across the key areas of spend, nights and numbers in Noosa’s key international markets. Noosa’s international spend increased to $101.6 million and visitor numbers are also up 16.6 per cent to 170,000 and nights up 24.4 per cent to 1.103 million”. This is the fifth annual increase in total international visitor numbers for the June quarter, increasing from 111,000 in 2012, while nights and spend also continue to trend upwards”. The UK remains our strongest international visitor market with 39,600 visitors (+1 per cent) and their spend increased 31.48 per cent to $21m. All other major markets increased their visitor numbers with NZ +4 per cent to 25,100, Germany +29.8 per cent to 26,600 and USA +9.7 per cent to 9300. Noosa’s share of Sunshine Coast visitors and nights increased, up 57.3 per cent (from 54.8 per cent) and 36.3 per cent (from 31.5 per cent) respectively, while our share of spend is at 40.7 per cent (was 40.9 per cent). Tourism Noosa had been actively engaged in lifting the profile of Noosa with retail trade partners, international media and brand partners in the UK, Europe, New Zealand and North America as part of our Noosa Global Market Strategy. Noosa’s strong appeal to international visitors, combined with targeted activity and improved access means that the destination is reaping significant benefits from international markets. Noosa has been experiencing sustained growth in inbound tourism since 2012 and these latest results cement Noosa’s position as one of Australia’s must-see destinations for overseas visitors, who love our natural attractions, surf culture, food experiences and friendly welcome. This is great news for Noosa, as the additional injection of dollars into our economy means that local jobs are retained and created. ●

POWER OF THE SEA There are five countries using their oceans to generate power. I am informed (by Dr Google) they are South Korea, Canada, Great Britain, China and France. I am not an engineer but apart from the ACT, every state and territory in Australia has an ocean on their doorstep which with the technology our engineers have could be used to generate the power we need using tidal or wave energy. At the same time, those same plants could also through desalination supply water in times of drought without being reliant on wind or sun and ugly holes left in the ground. Its a never-ending supply - as ice floes melt, those same oceans become more abundant. It's also cleaner than most systems we use now. We are told the desalination plant on the Gold Coast will be in full swing by 2020. There must be a good reason why it hasn’t been attempted before - maybe someone with more knowledge could explain why not. E. Wright, Sunrise Beach.
Harvey Norman staff with NRL Reader Winners: Michael Hines, Gary Hughes (second place), Carlo DiClemente, Michael Shaw (winner), Rod Ayache and John Boyle (third place).
WRONG PRIORITIES We complain about a one-off expenditure of $122 million on a postal survey, so why don’t we scream about the annual spending of $5 billion to support the renewable energy industry? Maybe we should have a survey to see how many of us would like to have more expensive and less reliable electricity. Case Smit, Noosa.
MISSING OUT Despite claims from Glen Elmes that the lack of any State Government funding for major projects for the Noosa area is the fault of Labor, the fact remains that he has been the State Member for Noosa for more than 10 years, but has achieved very little. Townsville is getting a new stadium, the Gold Coast
is getting squillions for the Commonwealth Games, but we seem to miss out. The contest to see who represents Noosa in the next parliament will indeed be interesting, and preferences will play an important role. I don’t think we have anything to lose by giving someone else a go. Bruce Hallett, Tewantin.
SCARLETT’S DREAM RIDE Noosa Pengari Year 7 student Scarlett Glennie has proved that if you’re willing to work hard and strive for your goals, you can achieve your dreams. For the past 12 months Scarlett has been without one of the most important forms of fun and freedom a child has - her bike. It was initially stolen and thankfully returned, but was soon after broken beyond repair after her brother Jasper used it to perform tricks it was not designed to do. Scarlett’s mum Sandy’s budget didn’t extend to the cost of a new bike, but undeterred with a never-give-up attitude, Scarlett set her mind to getting riding again. An opportunity arose through her school’s
Thursday, 14 September, 2017
recent Children’s Festival raffle bookseller’s prize - a brand-new mountain bike generously donated by Cognition Bikes at Tewantin. Through determination, perseverance and the supportive Eumundi community, Scarlett doubled the previous year's record for raffle books sold, selling 16 books. Sandy said Scarlett rang everyone in the family to buy tickets and gained support from people at the Eumundi markets, where she works part-time. She even sold tickets to people in New Zealand. Her brother Jasper, who felt responsible for the loss of her old bike, lent a hand to sell a couple of books. Such was the support that she received
from the community, the news of her success brought much joy and admiration for achieving her dream. “It’s been lovely,“ Sandy said. “Everyone’s been so excited about it, even though they didn’t win. The outcome was really good. “She’s learnt a lot. She learnt you can’t give up. Even when she saw the bike up for raffle was too small for her. “Everyone had supported her so she then felt a sense of responsibility to continue.“ Upon receiving her prize, Cognition Bikes owners Greg Pott and Greg Long recognised that Scarlett was going to be too big for the donated bike and generously fitted her with a new bike, in her dream colour - light blue. ● noosatoday.com.au

PROPERTY prices across the Sunshine Coast region are on the increase, and the upward trend looks set to continue. The latest research from CoreLogic indicated the Sunshine Coast property market had the highest growth in house and unit values in regional Queenlsand, after the Gold Coast. In the June quarter house values increased by six per cent and unit values increased by 4.4 per cent. To the north in Wide Bay values fell while on the Gold Coast house values went up by 7.5 per cent and units values increased by 5.9 per cent. CoreLogic research analyst Cameron Kusher said the Sunshine Coast region also had a three per cent increase in house sales over the quarter. “Some regional areas are enjoying the benefits of buoyant property market conditions due to housing demand rippling outside of the capital city boundaries into regional towns, particularly coastal regions,” Mr Kusher said. “Unfortunately, regional areas closely linked to the resources sector are still doing it tough; while conditions are generally stabilising in these areas we expect relatively soft conditions to continue throughout the year. “With mortgage rates still low, the attractiveness of housing, particularly in some of the larger coastal regional markets, is likely to continue to show further growth over 2017.” During the June quarter 11,068 homes were sold in the Sunshine Coast region; 64 per cent of those were houses and 35 per cent units. Meanwhile in the capital cities growth in real estate activity is heralding in the spring season. An increase in auction activity is expected to continue through September. OWNERS REFLECT ON YEAR OF GROWTH BY TESSA MAPSTONE Pip Whittaker, left, and Leanne Spence.
IT’S BEEN 12 months since Leanne Spence and Pip Whittaker pooled their decades of experience to create their own property management group Elite Rentals Noosa. As the pair celebrates the business’s first birthday, property manager Pip Whittaker reflects on the phenomenal growth and overwhelming success they have enjoyed. What is your background in property and what brought you together? Leanne and I met back in 2008 when I joined a franchise agency where Leanne was working as senior property manager. We have remained friends and work colleagues since. What made you think of setting up the business? I had decided that I didn’t want to work full-time any longer and unbeknown to me Leanne had been contemplating ways to create a better work/life balance. So when I bumped into her many months after I left my corporate job, she floated an idea to me. After several conversations, we decided to move forward with our idea and it all went from there. After a year in business what have you learnt about running this business that you didn’t know before you started? Leanne has been in property management in Noosa for about 14 or 15 years so she’s got a wealth of industry and local knowledge. I had just moved from the ski resort of Falls Creek where I owned a hotel and restaurant so I had the backend skills. We both love that we have the autonomy to adapt to our clients’ needs. Have there been challenges to overcome? Our motto is “we don’t do problems, we do solutions” so it’s all about setting up systems and procedures that help us create the solutions and adapting to each situation as it arises - no two situations are ever the same.
What is it you do differently for your clients that has made your business a success? Good old-fashioned service and communication. We always keep everyone well informed. People just want to be kept in the loop and respected, and we pride ourselves on being up-to-date on legislation and compliance in the industry. How do you go about matching tenants with properties? Leanne is the master - it’s fascinating to watch - she just has this amazing knack of matching tenants to properties.
If you were to start the business again now, are there things you do differently? I don’t think so. We are ethical and honest, and treat people the way we expect to be treated. You get back what you put in, and our success has proven that. We have been surrounded by the most amazing people who have supported and encouraged us since the beginning. Our growth has been phenomenal and we are far exceeding our expectations. We love it - we thrive on being busy and starting Elite Rentals Noosa is one the best thing we have both done. ●

days ago was the day Elite Rentals Noosa began. It was an amazing day for us and every day since has been amazing too. We are thankful for the support and encouragement we have received from our property owners, tenants, tradespeople and suppliers and of course, family and friends. So to all of you who have helped make today and every day amazing, we say

SOCIAL SCENE
QUILTS LINED WITH FUN BY MARGARET MACCOLL Even their name, Patches of Cooroy, is a giveaway as the quilting and craft group is more than a place for serious stitches. Behind the beautifully crafted quilts and diverse range of craft, the group offers fun and friendship and helps local charities through its fund-raising efforts. Group president Margaret Kippen said the quilting group was started in her drapery shop through customers in 1995, but through its popularity “grew too big to handle” and in 1999 was established in its own right. “It’s a good place for like-minded people to meet once a week,” Margaret said. “It’s a nice place to escape to and be in the company of women. We all have a bit of fun. We’ve helped members through personal trauma.” The women meet every Tuesday at the CWA Hall and last weekend they held their biennial Cooroy Quilt and Craft Show. The tiny hall was brimming with quilts of all colours and busy with guests keen to view them. The styles were as diverse as the members who pride themselves on their thirst for knowledge. “People are very sharing with their knowledge and will stretch themselves to learn something else,” Margaret said. “They want to have a go.” Proceeds from the show will go to the Rural Fire Brigade. Margaret said with the dry conditions and recent fires it was the logical choice to donate to the hard working volunteer group. ●

LIGHT SHINES ON
SHORT FILMS BY HOLLIE HARRIS
Gympie is about to shine the light on short film in a big way by bringing award-winning work to South East Queensland where the 10th Heart of Gold International Short Film Festival will take place from 5-8 October. Film lovers of all ages from families, weekenders and students, will flock to the Gympie Civic Centre to watch more than 130 brilliant short films - 90 of them screening in Queensland for the first time. Heart of Gold is the biggest short film festival in Queensland and is known for its unique mission and structure. Films screened at the festival are included because they have the ability to deeply resonate with the viewer in an inspiring, heart-warming or thought-provoking way. This year, Heart of Gold has a special theme not only to celebrate the 10th festival but also the 150th year since gold was first found in the Gympie region. Discovery will play as a major aspect of the festival - Heart of Gold wants to shine a light on sidelined topics, peoples or regions of the world. Heart of Gold also features its films with the taste 12354035-DJ23-17 12355460-HM25-17

of the community in mind using its unique two-part screening system. Films are filtered down through Emily Avila, the artistic director, and are then taken to lounge rooms across the region where local screener groups judge and choose what goes in the festival. This doesn’t mean the films are all the same, though. The program is jam-packed with many different genres. From the Coffee and Comedy and Happy Hour sessions that are set to have their audience in stitches, to the International Festival Highlights session with all the award-winning shorts from around the world - there really is something for everyone. On Sunday, kids are put first and foremost for the Family Day with drop-in drama workshops from Shake and Stir Theatre Company, family friendly sessions and animation meaning it is all set to be the perfect weekend treat for the kids. Saturday’s program has something a little extra in store for its student audience - a music video masterclass with Nick Waterman and a range of stand-out sessions, including Q and A sessions with filmmakers at the festival. Friday also holds a workshop suitable for all - the Folktale handheld devices workshop.

He will stay to help congratulate all the winning filmmakers at the Awards Ceremony celebrations. The energy at the festival will be truly electric filled with eager audiences as well as filmmakers from all around the world coming to this regional arts hub to celebrate their film’s selection and to attend the glamorous Opening Night Gala, held in an immersive gold mine installation that has to be seen to be believed. Sidewinder, by Stand Atlantic
Into the Water, by Paula Hawkins
Female-fronted pop-punk bands tend to get paired immediately with the likes of Paramore and Tonight Alive and it’s been a while since any newcomers truly shook up the scene. May we present, Stand Atlantic. They maintain traditional pop-punk tones with short, fast guitar riffs and high vocal ranges, but their debut EP Sidewinder delivers them with a fresh perspective that’s full of energy, encouraging even the oldest pop-punk fan to get up and mosh their hardest. Powerhouse vocalist Bonnie Fraser’s rough and perfectly on-point vocals rip through songs like Sidewinder and Coffee At Midnight with such blunt force and conviction that it’s empowering to listen to. ●
In the last days before her death, Nel called her sister. Jules didn’t pick up the phone, ignoring her plea for help. Now Nel is dead. They say she jumped. And Jules has been dragged back to the one place she hoped she had escaped for good, to care for the teenage girl her sister left behind. But Jules is afraid. So afraid. Of her long-buried memories, of the old Mill House, of knowing that Nel would never have jumped. And most of all she’s afraid of the water, and the place they call the Drowning Pool. ●
IT (MA15+) Cast: Bill Skarsgard, Jaeden Lieberher, Finn Wolfhard
Author Stephen King seems to be the man of the moment – a least Hollywood movie makers if not with movie goers. The recent adaptation of The Dark Tower failed to excite movie goers and critics alike but gold seems to have been struck with this second adaptation of his book IT. This remake of the 1990s mini-series reads a little like a coming of age movie until the introduction of IT. Suspenseful and well-paced with plenty of jump-scares for the fans this version hits on some dark themes and of course that strange fear of clowns that a lot of people have. The young cast performs well, and though a man of few words Bill Skarsgard puts in a convincing performance as Pennywise. ●

BY HOLLIE HARRIS Every year some trends change the way people eat and plan their meals. These changes and trends are never followed by everyone. But there is usually something that each person can discover and get something out of. It’s all about variety. You need to spice your diet up to keep things fresh and exciting. Now is as good a time as any to start thinking about some of the food trends that might make a splash in 2018. It’s possible to make some predictions by following current trends and seeing where new food discoveries are leading us. First of all, let’s look at the healthy eating trends that are likely to dominate 2018. There are always going to be healthy eating trends because there will always be people looking for a healthier diet. They remain as important as ever, and people seem to encounter more of them than ever before too. The two main offenders in our diet are sugar and carbs. More and more people are opting for food items that are not cooked at all, high protein and fibre drinks that target people who are on the go and meals with plenty of Turmeric. Dehydrated fruits and snacks are starting to make a bit of a comeback. Fermented foods are a trend that’s set to have a significant impact in the near future as are foods that can help with gut bacteria. Dining out people are seeing a root-to-

leaf approach emerging in many restaurant kitchens. This means restaurants are trying to limit waste and make use of every single part of the ingredients that they use. Also, the anytime breakfasts will continue to grow as chefs embrace a greater use of eggs and pork, it makes sense to continue that breakfast theme throughout the day. This

is another thing that can be linked back to people’s desire to have a more low-carb diet, and restaurants will start embracing this more than ever. Korean food has been on the rise for some time and Korean-inspired dishes are about to explode onto the mainstream in a big way next year. ●

There are also mouth-watering bar snacks and pizzas until 5pm. Leashed dogs are also welcome in the outdoor area. The sports bar is the best place to watch the game with two TAB terminals, big screens playing FOX 1, 2 and 3, and Sky 1 and Sky 2. GLASSES RAISED TO WINES Embassy XO in Sunshine Beach has again been awarded a 2 Glass Rating as part of the Australia’s Wine List of the Year Awards by Gourmet Traveller. Taking out the main award this year was Jonah’s in New South Wales, and the awards and glass ratings are decided by a panel of expert judges who explore the most exciting wines, spirits and beers in Australia’s top restaurants. When assessing the Glass Ratings, the judges review five aspects of the wine list to determine its level, rating the list between one and three glasses. This year the judges presented Embassy XO with 2 Glasses, with the following feedback based on content, balance, suitability, presentation and price. “There’s a sense of energy and enthusiasm to this delightful wine list with its amazing array of vinous goodies both traditional and modernist. Listing by weight and style with colourful descriptions adds to the fun, as does the top notch offerings by the glass via Coravin.” Embassy XO’s wine list was curated by sommelier James Alcock and owner Chris Burton, and was created with a focus on premium wines. It includes a balanced range of Australian and international wines with many organic and biodynamic wines included. “We are thrilled to be awarded 2 Glasses again this year, and I have to thank James and my team for representing our selections so well in venue,” Chris Burton said.
LET’S DO … Eat, drink like a king Head chef of The Imperial Hotel, Cale Dempsey’s latest menu was created to complement the brand new beers available - Eumundi Brewery Lager and Pale Ale. There’s a real focus on share plates in this menu and the fresh homemade quality will keep you coming back time and time again. Share plates include avocado and haloumi bruscetta on sourdough; barramundi spring rolls with citrus soy dipping sauce; American-style wings with blue cheese dipping sauce; flash fried salt and pepper calamari and vegetable gyoza with wakame. There’s a fine selection of burger options to go alongside your brew such as: Wagyu beef, chicken and bacon or gourmet vege, a knock-out rib fillet steak sandwich or go for the crispy fried barramundi, vegie tacos, or gourmet pizzas - all 100 per cent housemade with a signature dough recipe. Drop in and sample the new beers available straight out the Eumundi Brewery and grab a tasy feed too! ●
Embassy XO’s restaurant manager Richard Dean. “When designing the Embassy XO wine list we wanted to create a collection of stunning premium wines from around the world, and have found many from some incredible small and boutique vineyards.”
Embassy XO is joined on the list by other 2 Glass Rated Sunshine Coast restaurants Wasabi and Noosa Waterfront, as well as Sails Restaurant which boasts a 3 Glass Rating. ●

STICK TO BASICS OF GOOD EATING BY HOLLIE HARRIS With so many different diets going around these days (many which disguise themselves not as diets but lifestyle) it’s no surprise we are all confused. Sugar is blacklisted, but eggs are back. Coconut oil was the elixir of youth, but now it’s off the list too. Our bodies need fat but the right fat. It seems that nutrition experts are always changing the rules. Here is the latest - sugar. Loading up on added sugar - sweetener that doesn’t occur naturally in food - is a major don’t. As the experts point out, we need glucose to fuel everyday living, but not sucrose, which is the fructose and glucose found in added sugars. The body metabolises all added sugars the same way, causing insulin the hormone that says “store fat!“ - to shoot up without the stabilising effects of the fibre, protein and nutrients provided in natural foods. The American Heart Association suggests that women get no more than 24 grams of added sugar daily. Men should aim for less than 36 grams. To put that in perspective, one 12-ounce can of Coke has 39 grams of sugar, which is more than 150 percent of a woman’s daily recommended amount.
The one rule that remains unchanged - load up on all varieties of fruit and vegies and your body will love you for it.
Fruit versus fruit juice When you eat a medium banana, you’re ingesting about 14 grams of sugar in the form of fructose. That sugar is wrapped in fibrous material that slows down digestion. On the other hand, an eight-ounce glass of apple juice contains no fibre and up to 39 grams of sugar. The liver is the only organ that can process fructose, so too much can overload your system and result in insulinresistant, or Type 2, diabetes. Fruit juice in small amounts most likely won’t be a problem for a healthy, lean individual, but juices have just as many calories and sugar - and sometimes more - as sweetened sodas. Stick to getting your juice from the whole fruit instead.
Processed versus unprocessed Almost all food is processed in some way, but what this term refers to is chemically processed food. “Many processed foods are devoid of fibre, so the added sugar they contain causes blood sugar levels to soar,“ Devries explained. Eggs The cholesterol in your food is not a main influence on the cholesterol levels in your body, so don’t worry about eating those egg yolks for breakfast.
Fat Our bodies need fat, but where we get it is important. Omega-6 fats, the kind found in processed foods, should be limited. Most vegetable oils, including soybean, corn and safflower, are high in these fats and should be avoided. “A diet high in omega-6 fats will likely be lower in omega-3 fats,“ Schultz said. “(Omega-6 fats) may increase inflammation and the incidence of disease. Ideally you should aim for an antiinflammatory diet with a higher ratio of omega-3 to omega-6. A few examples of omega-3-rich foods include flax seed, chia seed, walnuts and wild-caught fatty fish.“
Red meat An offending culprit in red meat is L-carnitine, according to a study by half a dozen US medical centres and published in Nature Medicine. When the body ingests red meat, it provides certain gut bacteria with the resources to make trimethylamineN-oxide (TMAO). Researchers found that TMAO could accelerate atherosclerosis, or the buildup of plaque in your arteries. Stick to grass-fed, sometimes organic, local protein at a reasonable price while supporting good quality farming practice if you can. ●

MARTIAL ARTS MEDAL DETECTORS BY RON LANE For the team of fourteen who travelled from the Sunshine Coast Martial Arts Dojo in Noosaville (eleven students and three parents) to the Budokan in Tokyo for two weeks of intensive training and competition, it was indeed the trip of a lifetime. Team manager and Chief Instructor of the team, Bryan Dukas, said, “We are very pleased and indeed very proud, with what our team achieved in what was really a short period of time. All ten members attended training sessions with Japanese Senseis and when the tournament started, five of the team took part. The tournament was the World Shotokan Karate Federation, World Championships for 2017 held every two years. “Training under the Japanese,” Sensei Bryan said, “was indeed a very learning experience for our students as the discipline and code of ethics was indeed very strict. For example, the training sessions of which there were two a day, went for a two hour period, with a five minute break for water. Perhaps the biggest learning curve is the fact that the training is conducted in complete silence except for instruction and direction given by the Sensei.” Some training was conducted at Yokohama and Kamuraka but the main sessions were in Tokyo at the Budokan. “For the tournament there were some fifty countries represented and the Eastern Block was indeed very strong,” Bryan said. “In this there were two divisions; the Kata, which is detailed pattern of movements, performed either solo or in threes, and Kumite, which is fighting.” In both these categories the contestants

start at 5-6 years old for both boys and girls and progress on to 55-years-old for men and veterans for women. For the first time ever an Australian female, Caitlin Corbett won gold in both the Kata and the Kumite competing in the 8-10 year division. Then in the boys, the Thornton brothers won gold with 14-year-old Ryan winning in the Kumite and 15-year-old Joshua winning in the Kata. For the women’s team Kata, Noosaville’s Isla Corbett was chosen along with a two other girls (one from Venezuela, one from South Africa) for the International Team. Competing against all other countries they
he had the pleasure of meeting up with his father Mike while in Tokyo; he being also upgraded to Black Belt 8th Dan. In November/December he will also visit the Sunshine Coast where he will conduct technical seminars. When we look at the overall results, it shows that the standard of coaching from all the staff must be of the highest order. Good to know that our young and also our veterans are indeed in good hands. Planning ahead; good to hear that on 28 October 2018, the Queensland Interschool Karate Championships will be held in Noosaville, at the Good Shepherd Lutheran School. We wish them every success. ●
won the silver medal. Competing in the Men’s and Veterans division of the Kata, Bryan Dukas won gold in both and backed up by winning a bronze in the 65-year Kumite; another gold when Australia won the Junior Mix Team Kata for 11-year-olds. To know that these young Australians came from our local Noosaville S.C.M.A. Dojo is indeed very pleasing and is only right that their achievements on the international level should be noted. For Bryan, apart from his medal tally, he had the distinction of being upgraded from Black Belt 5th Dan to Black Belt 6th Dan. Then to top off the momentous occasion,

Noosa croquet on top of ladder NOOSA CROQUET With only three rounds to go, Noosa 2 sits on top of the ladder but in the second last round meets Headland sitting in second place. Inevitably Noosa 1 and Noosa 2 met with both playing on their home ground. Noosa 2 ended up the victors winning six matches to four with hoops made 60 to 47. This helps consolidate Noosa 2 as the ladder leader with Headland and Coolum in second and third places. With only three rounds remaining, Noosa 2 and Headland each have won 10 matches and these two teams face off in two weeks' time at Headland. The individual match scores for the Noosa v Noosa contest follow: Susan Powley defeated Kaye Archer 6:3; Wolfgang Bredenfeldt lost to Joan Cordell 5:7. In their reverse singles the tables were turned and Susan lost to Joan in a very tight game 4:5, while Wolfgang won against Kaye 7:4. In the 3-4 singles Julie Terry fell in another nailbiter 3:4 to Ed Boyd while Ted Sayers just got home 4:3 against Cher Boyd. The reverse singles saw Ted lose to Ed 6:5 while Julie won against Cher 6:5. At the end of the eight singles, the match was drawn at 4:4. In the doubles, Susan played with Sheila Moncrieff and won 10:5 against Joan and Kaye. The second doubles again went to Noosa 2 when Julie and Ted defeated Ed and Cher 10:5. - Doug Mcconnell

LIFE OF BRINE
PHIL JARRATT
Author jags a nice one.
View from the pool.
SECRET PLACE OF PARADISE Last week after posting on social media a photo of a nice wave I’d just surfed in Bali, I found myself swamped with requests to reveal the location. I responded with the oldie but goodie: I could tell you, but then I’d have to kill you. When you’re a really ancient surfer, old habits die hard, and the myth of the secret spot is one that we cling to like a life raft in a gale. Of course there’s no such thing as a secret spot in Bali any more, but there are some places less well-known than others, and this was one of them. But it’s all relative. Now there’s a $200 a night boutique hotel with an infinity pool where once were paddocks in front of the rocky point, but I’m very comfortable there, thank you very much, and I can still get my share of the long lefthanders that peel across the reef. A couple of nights earlier we’d been discussing this very same secret spot over a baked fish dinner at a bench in the Kuta night markets - another piece of old Bali that hasn’t changed - with John and Val Haymes, the founders of Tubes Surfers Bar in Poppies II. John and I came to the conclusion that we’d both stumbled on this place in the same dry season of 1980, about the same time our Kuta-based crew also started venturing through the rice paddies to Canggu, where
a single warung proudly bearing the name “Chew and Spew” stood next to the temple at what is now Echo Beach. The difference is that while Canggu has become high density living and the home of the Russian surf schools - God help us! Secret Spot West remains invitingly rural. I can sit in the infinity pool sipping a sunset beer and look out over an endless untouched coastline (apart from scattered fishing villages) stretching towards Java, visible across the channel. I remember the first time I saw this wave-rich coast, back in 1974 as we bounced towards Java on the “express bus” packed with chicken-toting locals. We spied waves as the road dipped onto the coast at Soka, and there were enticing glimpses of reef set-ups through the palm trees for the next 20 kilometres. But for the next six years, with so many perfect waves going unridden every day on the Bukit peninsula, there was no need to mount a mission. I’d previously mentioned in this column surfing this spot for the first time in 1975, but John and Val set me straight on that, and they had the photos to prove it. I can’t recall if it was the arrival of the Brazilians or the Japanese that made us start to think it was time to tuck our boards under our butts and point our motorbikes

in the other direction, but I do remember parking them at a roadside warung and running excitedly down a track to a Muslim fishing village with a long, rocky point to its left. And there they were - long lines of beautiful empty waves, peeling for section after section. Like Crescent Head, Green Island, Greenmount and even Noosa’s First Point, Secret Spot West went out of fashion for a couple of decades, deemed a bit slow and clunky compared with the more recent discovery of slabs and hairy reef passes, but for longboarders all of these places remain a particular kind of paradise. And for me, four beautiful long sessions there over two days last week was a very special therapy. Give me a Corkarita! Our friends Corky and Raquel Carroll lead a wonderful life at their beachfront surf camp at La Saladita, Mexico, punctuated a few times a year by Corky’s need to perform a sellout gig in his role as one of America’s leading surfer/musicians. Such was the case when they flew out of Zihuatanejo last week bound for Orlando, Florida, and a big open air concert as part of the Surf Expo trade show. First stop was Mexico City, where they picked up Raquel’s mum, then back on a

plane for Atlanta, Georgia. Mid-flight they were informed with no explanation that their flight had been diverted to Birmingham, Alabama, and while waiting six hours there for a connection to Orlando, Corky learnt that his gig had been cancelled due to the impending arrival of Hurricane Irma. Ticketed out of Orlando, the Carrolls had to arrive there before they could leave, so they kept heading towards the eye of the storm. Meanwhile, an earthquake hitting 8.1 on the Richter scale rocked Mexico not far from their home, with a tsunami of epic proportions expected to smash the Saladita coast. It seemed like wherever they went, they were heading for trouble. In Orlando after just one day. the Surf Expo shut down as people evacuated Florida. Corky, Raquel and Mum waited another two days before they could get seats on a plane, then managed to get out just an hour or so before the airport was shut down. The good news is that when they finally got home, the tsunami had proved to be a fizzer, their home was untouched, and there was a new swell just starting to hit the point. Every evening around sunset, Corky mixes up a delicious and potent jug of cocktails he calls “Corkaritas”. I bet he had a few that night. ● 12352455-LB20-17

HOOK, LINE & SINKER
JACK MANGROVE
GREAT FISHING IN RIVER With the consistent warmer weather, the water temperature in the river is starting to rise. Fishing the run out tide in the evenings has seen the odd jack being taken on live bait, these fish tend to feed that bit more in those warmer run out currents out of the lakes after the sun has been on them all day so keep an eye on the sounder for those temperature changes. With the water so clearn using light fluorocarbon leaders is accentual for the flathead anglers, plastics have been the way to go with some great fish boated over the last week, reds, pinks or chartreuse have been the favourite colours with prawn and paddle tails the better performing profiles. Trevally have also been in good numbers and as the sun gets a little higher, those plastics have claimed some great fish. Whiting are on the move during the warmer weather so now is the time to try surface fishing for them in the shallow sand flats. Try areas like the Frying Pan, Weyba Creek and sand flats on the Dog Beach. Fishing surface lures like small poppers and surface walkers - making sure you use mono line as a leader as the fluorocarbon is a lot denser and tends to sink thus upsetting the way the lure works. Live beach worms and freshly pumped yabbies have been the best bait for catching a feed. Fishing the beaches has seen bream, whiting, tailor and dart all taken from the

surf gutters. Look for those deeper darker gutters and fishing two hours either side of the high tide for the best results. Lightly weighted mullet strips, bonito and pilchard on ganged hooks have claimed most of the tailor, while fresh beach worms fished on small hooks is a great way to target whiting and bream. The Noosa North Shore has been popular with the 4x4 enthusiasts while the southern beaches around Sunshine and Marcus have both produced good fish. On the offshore scene, it’s all about the snapper. Using pillies, squid and livies fished hard on the bottom as well as a Paternoster rig is working very well, having a lightly weighted pilchard fished in a trail of fresh burley with the reel set on light drag has seen
many anglers getting solid hook ups as they engage more drag and drive the hook home. Make sure you have a burley log or some burley pellets and tuna oil to keep up a steady flow of burley for the best results. Mid water feeders like cobia and smaller mackerel have also been taken using this method. For the anglers that have done the run up to Double Island Reef, the Hard and the Barwon banks have all been rewarded with plenty of quality fish including larger snapper, pearl perch, cobia, jew, mori cod, sweet lip, tusk fish and cod. The closer reefs have also been firing with plenty of pan-sized snapper, sweetlip and coral trout on offer. So on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures! ●

Ron Lane presents an award to Robert Lemon. The event was overshadowed by the loss of former Ironman Dean Mercer whose funeral many were attending on the day. Flags were flown at half-mast in a mark of respect. Club president Ross Fisher said it had been a sad time for the club with the recent passing of club patron Garth Prowd and Dean Mercer, brother of club coach Darren Mercer and uncle to Ironwoman Jordan. “Jordan was to depart to Denmark on Tuesday to compete for Australia. She said, ‘I’m not going’. They said, ‘you are and you’re doing it for Dean’. She went and won gold for Dean,” he said. ●

Noosa Heads Surf Lifesaving Club hosted a breakfast on Friday to highlight its achievements, recognise a lifesaver for his extraordinary rescue and thank sponsors and supporters. SLSQ’s Caitlyn Akers praised Noosa for its “unique” support of Peregian Beach, and said how important their role was for Tourism Queensland to have the bathing public feeling safe. In the past year, there have been 650,000 preventative actions and 2500 lives saved in Queensland, thanks to lifesavers, she said. “That’s 2500 families who have people coming home with them because of the work we do,” she said. The club re-enacted the awarding of a National Rescue of the Month recognition to surf lifesaver Robert ‘RJ’ Lemon that had been officially presented at Parliament House last week. RJ said on 21 June he’d finished work at the clubhouse about 1pm and headed off to flat rock with his mate, Sam White, to go spear fishing. “Five minutes later, I saw him splashing about 50-80m off shore. I thought it was a shark attack,” he said. RJ, who had only been with the club for 12 months, swam toward him to find a stingray had shot a barb through his leg, was still attached and was trying to swim away dragging Sam with it. RJ swam both Sam and the stingray to shore then signalled to a park ranger for a knife to detach it. Former club president Ron Lane said RJ’s actions showed what lifesaving was all about “getting the confidence and training to save a life”.

The Roos do appear a tad wounded but nothing will be taken for granted by the hungry and super impressive Noosa outfit who can’t wait for the siren to sound at 2pm at league headquarters this Saturday. They have been an extremely even team in 2017 with names like Laskey, Templeton, Woods, Hill, Coleman and Fitzpatrick having superb years thus far. The Roos are also boasting star quality with Dzufer, Bevan, Gale, Norman, Simpson and Ainsworth all experienced and more than formidable opponents. The stage is set for a mouth-watering grand final that hasn’t been contested by these two great Sunshine Coast rivals since 1994.

The Rococo Bar and Bistro Noosa Tigers will face arch rival Maroochydore in both senior and reserve grade grand finals at Yeronga this Saturday. Noosa Tigers had the weekend off to freshen up - while having an intense training session on Saturday morning - and waited to see who their grand final opponent would be. The star-studded Maroochydore Roos were too good for a fast finishing Caloundra outfit coming away four goal victors. The Noosa Tigers (both senior and reserve grades) are fully fit and raring to go with all players on the senior list available - what a great position for the match committee to be in.

BETWEEN THE FLAGS
RON LANE
LIFESAVERS READY FOR BUSY SEASON This Saturday, 16 September, our lifesavers will be back on the beaches of Peregian, Sunshine Beach and Main Beach Noosa. With the great weather and big influx of tourists, our beaches are sure to be busy. We take the opportunity to remind our beach-goers to swim between the flags and above all don’t hesitate to talk to our patrol members in the red and yellow uniforms. Don’t hesitate to ask questions, as that is what they are for - to pass on their experience and advice - it’s all part of the job. Most important before you embark on a family stroll through the beautiful National Park - talk to us. To maintain a high standard of patrolling is a never ending job and with a beautiful National Park, which unfortunately has several unpatrolled beaches between Noosa and Sunshine Beach, the temptation to swim at one of these during a hot walk can indeed be very dangerous - thus the need for the ongoing training and maintaince of our IRB teams and their rescue craft. They are the first off the line should an incident occur in the National Park. However, should they be otherwise engaged in duties at Noosa Main Beach (an officially gazetted bathing area) their response time can be delayed, so don’t take them for granted. Not a good start to the season for Sunshine Beach's Club Captain Scott Summers who suffered a health problem last weekend - we wish him a speedy recovery.
To say that the month of September 2017 has been a sad time for lifesaving - not only in the state of Queensland but throughout Australia - would indeed be putting it in the right perspective; for it was during this month that we bid a sad farewell to two of our finest - Jack Dearlove, OAM, aged 93, and Dean Mercer, OAM, aged 47. Both of these men made what can only be described as outstanding contributions to our organisation; from Dearlove, it was
in the fields of administration - at both national and international levels, mouth to mouth resuscitation and carnivals and from Mercer it was Iron Man competition and coaching. However, perhaps their most important contribution has been their public image away from the surf and sand. Apart from his research into mouth to mouth resuscitation, Jack Dearlove, taught us all that despite your position in life, be it
a brain surgeon or a labourer on the side of the road, once you walked through the door of a good surf club, all men were equal. As the young inexperienced club captain of an out of the way lonely beach called Noosa Heads, I was given the same time and respect as that shown to captains of the then Big Three - Maroochydore, Alexander Headlands and Mooloolaba. In later years, during his retirement he would always visit for a meal and a cold beer, and a “How’s everything going mate, all ok?” - still the same old clubbie. From Mercer we took pride in his outstanding achievements in competition at the highest national level. His big heart and fighting spirit during years in Iron Man and other endurance events definitely set the standard for those hoping to achieve success. But perhaps it was his personality that made such a big impact. His conduct and attitude in general earned respect from all levels of lifesaving and as we have said many times, respect in lifesaving is earned - never just given. This young man did that many times over. Being of the Mercer family - one of the most respected families in the hundred-plus years of our organisation, it is easy to see where the pride and dignity of this young man came from. Two of our finest - gone but never to be forgotten. Vaya Con Dios Gentleman, Vaya Con Dios. ●
TRY YOUR HAND AT OUTRIGGER CANOING Noosa Outrigger Canoe Club invites individuals and local gyms and sport clubs to come and try outrigger canoeing, an exciting and action-packed water sport. Outrigger canoeing is a growing sport, and the Noosa club is the second largest in Australia, with only Mooloolaba larger. It is a sport for both men and women of all ages, and Noosa currently has competitive paddlers aged from their 30s to 80s. Noosa competes in the South Queensland zone for one and two person canoes and the separate OC6 racing series, as well as other races throughout the state and internationally. Racing is generally in the ocean, which provides thrilling conditions. In early 2018 Noosa paddlers will also
compete in world and national sprint titles. If this sounds like a sport that you would like to try, then come along by yourself, with a friend or grab your club-mates. You will need to be aged 20 years or older and be able to swim. The Come and Try session will be held on Sunday 17 September from 9am-noon, meeting at NOCC, Chaplin Park, Mill Street, Noosaville (across the bridge from the Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club). Pre-registration for the Come and Try is preferable to avoid disappointment, so please contact Glen at secretary@ noosaoutriggers.com.au. For more information visit www. noosaoutriggers.com.au ●
