MORE TO LOVE The editor’s desk I am extremely ‘pro’ our rural industries but I am yet to be convinced a planned free-range egg farm on a 45-acre block at Freestone, as was approved by the council last month, is in the right place. We cover this issue inside today and of course, there are always two sides to every story. I applaud the young couple behind the proposal for their get-up-and-go attitude, but I can also understand the many concerns of the neighbours. What is more concerning however is the decision-making process which has been employed here. It would appear none of our elected representatives bothered to go and inspect the area in question, which to me would be a no-brainer when a development application draws numerous public objections. But even more concerning are the changes to the planning scheme on the basis of which this venture was approved. Not only have they not been signed off by the State Government as yet, they also potentially pave the way for intensive animal industries to be approved in sensitive agricultural areas and undermine previous sensible planning principles. At the end of the day, the community has the right to expect due scrutiny of and consistency in assessing development proposals on the part of our elected councillors. - Jeremy Sollars, editor.

The possible leasing out of the Warwick Saleyards to a private operator has been a hot topic in recent months, with many connected with the rural sector adamant the saleyards make a profit and should continue to be directly managed by the council. The saleyards returned a $264,998 profit in the 2016-'17 financial year. The council’s September general meeting has been changed from Wednesday 27 September to next Wednesday 20 September and will be held at 9am at the Stanthorpe Chambers on Marsh Street. ●

Terry Dodds of Tura Beach in New South Wales has accepted the role of chief executive at Tenterfield Shire Council after the council unanimously endorsed his appointment last Tuesday 5 September at an Extraordinary Meeting to conduct final interviews. Mayor Peter Petty said Terry was chosen after a search of candidates from across Australia and overseas and following “a very competitive selection process from a high-calibre field of 23 experienced candidates who came from NSW, Queensland, the Northern Territory, Victoria and Canada. “Terry highly impressed all councillors with his collaborative leadership style, his passion for local government and serving communities and his obvious project and asset management experience,” Cr Petty said. “We interviewed eight highly credentialed candidates from the 23 candidates, even one from Canada, an Australian working there as a city manager. “Overall, Terry demonstrated he has the experience, qualifications and desire to do an outstanding job. “With Terry’s leadership and the hardworking staff of the council, Tenterfield is in very good hands.” Mr Dodds replaces former Tenterfield

NEW CHIEF EXECUTIVE FOR COUNCIL

The Warwick Saleyards.

A report from a meeting of the Southern Downs Regional Council’s Saleyards Advisory Committee held last Thursday 7 September will be presented to next week’s council meeting in Stanthorpe. The council would not confirm this week if expressions of interest (EOIs) for the potential leasing out of the Warwick Saleyards were discussed at the meeting or if the minutes would be made public, unlike those of at least two meetings of the committee held earlier this year. Minutes of a committee meeting held on Friday 4 August which were publicly released note that council chief executive officer David Keenan advised the committee members it was “up to

He said the road was carrying increasing traffic volumes due to new residents in the Rosenthal Heights area. “Under the old Rosenthal Heights council, it was re-sheeted and graded a couple of times a year,” Mr Harm said. “In those days the grader drivers knew how to form up a table drain but that’s gone by the board now. “A few years back after the floods this road got right down to clay - we’ve been paying a fair bit in rates over the past 30 years, I really feel this road should be sealed at least part of the way, it’s unsafe the way it is.” Council advice shows the only road in that area to be maintained in the 2016-2017 financial year was Glenvale Road, where both Mayor Tracy Dobie and Cr Rod Kelly have properties. Re-sheeting in 2016-2017 was done on 30 gravel roads across the region. ●

The Southern Downs Regional Council says a list of gravel roads to be resheeted across the region in the first half of 2018 will be announced in the “near future” once its funding share is confirmed following Cyclone Debbie earlier this year. The Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA) is a joint federal and state funding program to fix road and other council assets damaged following high intensity rainfall and other weather events. Gravel roads to be re-sheeted before Christmas this year include Warfields Road at Allora, Warner Street at Rosenthal Heights, Wickham Road at Thanes Creek, Bald Mountain Road at Wallangarra and Derreen and Sladevale roads in Warwick. Not on the list, however, is Kingsleigh Road at Rosenthal Heights, on which long-time resident Ian Harm has been asking for maintenance to

EGG FARM NOD

COVER STORY BY JEREMY SOLLARS

S

Mark and Rebecca Kinsella say they were “shocked“ at the level of reaction to their plan.

outhern Downs Regional Council last month approved a free-range egg farm east of Warwick on the basis of planning scheme amendments yet to be signed off by the State Government. The couple behind the egg farm plan, Mark and Rebecca Kinsella, gained council approval at the August meeting to establish the venture on their property on Jack Smith Gully Road at picturesque Freestone, despite 16 formal objections from neighbours, some of whom have described the proposal as “a nightmare”. Councillors gave approval for up to 3000 laying hens on the 18.3 hectare property, despite the proposal being in contravention of current planning rules which stipulate that a poultry farm with more than 1000 birds must be on a property at least 100 hectares in size. The current council planning scheme also requires a minimum 500 metre setback from the property boundaries - with the Kinsellas only being required to put in place a 10-metre buffer “strip” with tree-plantings around their perimeter. The nearest neighbouring residence to the Kinsella property is just 185 metres from their northern boundary. Properties on Jack Smith Gully Road and nearby areas are classed as being in the “Alluvial Plains” precinct of the Rural Zone, with current planning rules stating “intensive animal industries” - such as a poultry farm with more than 200 birds - are “generally not located in the precinct because of likely impacts on water and scenic values, loss of productive land (and the) existing closely settled character of the precinct”. The current ‘Rural Zone Code’ also states poultry farms with more than 200 birds should be located “on very large holdings in the traprock and sandstone rises areas in the central and western parts of the region”. Neighbours of the Kinsellas have told the Free Times of their serious concerns about noise from the birds, dust, odour, water contamination, disease and rodents and feral animals such as wild dogs being attracted by up to 3000 hens, in an area which is primarily smaller ‘lifestyle’ rural blocks. At least one neighbouring owner plans to lodge a legal appeal against the council approval. In all, the council received 16 objections to the Kinsella proposal and three in support. Neighbours are also concerned the only water source on the Kinsella property is a small dam, and the sloping property itself forms a small “valley” which can be inundated during extreme rainfall. They also claim neither mayor Tracy Dobie or any of the councillors inspected the Kinsella property in person - despite being given assurances an inspection by some or

Neighbours in the Jack Smith Gully Road area have objected to the Kinsella plan and at least one plans to lodge a legal appeal against the council’s approval.

all of the councillors would happen - or if they fully read and understood the report prepared by council officers for the August meeting, which recommended approval of the Kinsella plan with conditions. Cr Marika McNichol did visit the area and met with neighbours - after the council meeting and vote. The Free Times asked the council to confirm if the mayor and councillors had read the report - and the neighbours’ objection statements - and if assurances had been given about an on-site inspection by councillors. A council spokeswoman said the development approval “has been issued” and “council wishes to make no further comment at this time”. The council’s director of Planning, Environment and Corporate Services Ken Harris did, however, confirm that the council “resolved to proceed with the proposed amendments to the Intensive Animal Industry code at its general meeting on 24 May 2017”. “These amendments, and all of the proposed major amendments to the Southern Downs Planning Scheme, have been forwarded to the deputy premier for her approval for council to adopt the proposed amendments.”

CONCERN OVER “LACK OF SCRUTINY”

I

f the amendments are approved by the State Government, properties like the Kinsella’s could potentially gain approval for up to 400,000 laying hens, as part of the council’s bid to encourage new rural industries, including intensive animal industries within floodplains in the ‘Alluvial Plains’ precinct. While neighbours of the Kinsella’s are pro the rural sector - with most having some form of livestock on their properties - they remain unconvinced councillors fully scrutinised the Kinsella application, and are adamant their property is far too small for up to 3000 hens.

They also claim the council gave them no notice that the Kinsella application would be considered at the August council meeting despite being assured they would be notified so they could attend. The application also had to be re-advertised after the council wrongly classed it as ‘animal husbandry’ when initially received. The controversy over the Kinsella proposal highlights decision-making processes over rural industries by councillors, who at their August meeting refused a proposal for a 3150 cattle feedlot on a 335 hectare property on Warfields Road at Allora, on the basis it was too close to surrounding properties and out of character with the locality. Councillors received legal advice about the feedlot refusal during a confidential session of last month’s meeting.

YOUNG COUPLE ASKS NEIGHBOURS TO “KEEP AN OPEN MIND”

M

ark and Rebecca Kinsella say they were “shocked” at the level of concern and objection from neighbours to their free range egg farm plan. The couple have a “passion for poultry” and while they’re currently both working full-time, they’re determined to pursue their dream of commercial egg production as a full-time livelihood down the track. They purchased their Jack Smith Gully Road property in May of this year and say initial inquiries to the council prior to the final sale suggested their plan would be suitable for the location. Their plan involves rotating the laying hens in moveable housing and “strip grazing” to protect pasture. Rebecca told the Free Times they are prepared to go “all the way” to fight any appeal lodged against the council

approval of their plan. “The approval is for 3000 birds, but we may not get to 3000, and we’d be starting with 500,” Rebecca said this week. “We understand stocking densities and we are confident we have well and truly enough room on the property for what we’re proposing. “We are also very confident that the screening we will use on the boundaries will help to reduce any impacts, while the trees become established. “We were quite shocked by the reaction of some of the neighbours - we did think about having them around for a chat and to talk through our plans, but by that stage some had already put in objections, so we thought ‘just leave it’. “This is a farming area and I don’t see how our plan is any different to having cattle. “The council wouldn’t have approved (the application) if it wasn’t following the regulations.” Rebecca said she understood neighbours’ concerns about odour, but said chicken manure breaks down well into the soil and “dries out in the open paddock in the sun”. Mark grew up in a farming family and is passionate about the couple’s mantra of ‘back to basics farming’ and also preserving rare chicken breeds. The couple are keen to tap in the booming organic egg market and plan to sell their produce primarily in the local area, but if successful would expand to supply consumers in Toowoomba and Brisbane. “At the end of the day, we need to grow food for a growing population - where can we do that except in a farming area like this one?” Mark said. “We are in an extended dry period right now - but if we get some good seasons and some good pasture back, I think the neighbours will be surprised. “Chooks are good for pasture - we’ll be keeping them moving, there won’t be any bare ground.” ●

Advanced emissions control and live engine data capabilities are just some of the features of the new Cummins ISX E5 training engine recently delivered to TAFE Queensland in Warwick. The engine is used in equipment such as pumps, tractors and heavy trucks across the agricultural, resources and transport industries, and will give apprentices the chance to learn industry leading skills on innovative new technology. TAFE Queensland Automotive Teacher and Educational Team Leader David Wyvill said as technology advanced, so did industry’s expectations around fuel economy and emissions control. “The companies that we work with are becoming increasingly conscious of fleet emissions, and are looking to make savings through increased fuel economy,” he said. The Cummins training engine features advanced emissions control technology, a computerised diagnostic system, and live engine data capabilities, ensuring that apprentices practise their skills with an engine on the cutting edge of automotive technology in Australia. Apprentices studying Agricultural and Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology in Warwick will all have the opportunity to learn on the new training engine as part of their qualification. With a recent study by the National Transport Commission of Australia predicting continued growth in the road transport sector in the coming years, the updated technology ensures apprentices have the skills required to take advantage of

CALL OUT FOR EGG-THROWERS They’ve found a Billy Hughes - but organisers of the upcoming reenactment of Warwick’s famous ‘eggthrowing incident’ are still looking for, well, egg-throwers. The Warwick Community Performing Arts Group is behind plans for the reenactment of the incident 100 years after it took place, on 29 November at the Warwick railway station. For the non-local or the uninitiated, Prime Minister Billy Hughes was pelted with an egg at the Warwick Railway Station on the date in question in 1917 over his pro-conscription stance, during a whistle-stop tour promoting the ‘Yes’ vote for the second conscription referendum in December 1917. The culprit was Patrick Brosnan - an egg thrown by either his brother Bertie or a mate missed its target - and the incident led to the formation of the Australian Federal Police, after local coppers refused to come to the aid of an incensed Hughes. Peter von Stieglitz, a Warwick local and a Downlands student auditioned for and won the part of Billy Hughes and the role of Senior Sergeant Kenny will be played by Vic Foote. Jessica Goodlet is the narrator but the organisers are still seeking the pivotal roles of the egg throwers, and non-speaking crowd members are also wanted. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has

Billy Hughes been invited to attend this November’s re-enactment, at which the Australian Federal Police will unveil a plaque. The Light Horse, Cloudstreet, Warwick Town Crier Bob Townshend, the Warwick City Brass Band and bush poet Amy Bradfield will also help celebrate the occasion. Those interested in performing as egg-throwers or non-speaking crowd members are asked to contact Clare McHugh Von Stieglitz on 0437 863 886, or email claremcvs@gmail.com, or message the Facebook group ‘Warwick Community Performing Arts”. ●

COUNCIL SPOKE IN BILLYCART WHEELS BY JEREMY SOLLARS The Southern Downs Regional Council has declined to comment on the cancellation of the Warwick Wacky Racers which were to have been held on Saturday 1 October, other than to say it “respects” the decision of the organisers. The billycart event was last week called off by organisers Total Driver after the council advised they would need to cough up $2500 for a traffic management plan and signage. The race day had been organised for William Street in west Warwick, with Total Driver spokesman Gene Corbett saying they would have had no way of recouping that amount of money and their decision was a “commercial one”. He said would-be participants had “bought amazing carts for their kids, sent them to panel beaters and mechanics to build them, paint them and tune them and were keen to go racing in Warwick”. “Imagine my utter frustration, after months of chasing council, submitting the same applications as they kept losing them and having endless conversations to support the event, that they chose not to, and didn’t event tell us until (we) phoned them yet again for an update,” Mr Corbett said. “The road block - they expect Total Driver to pay $2500 for the traffic

management plan and signs. “This is a huge out-of-pocket expense for a community event where last year we made $185 for thousands in outgoings and commitments. “This did not include, time, staff wages and other out-of-pocket expenses. “Last year, this council fee was a

grant, we still had to do all the work, ensure an approved person followed the plan, laid out the signs and packed everything up to return to council. “They literally did not have to do a thing, but provide signs sitting in their yard. “This year, they expect Total Driver to pay $2500 for this.

“It is with regret we have no choice but to cancel the Wacky Racers Billycart Championship in Warwick for 1 October. “This year’s event was going to be a cracker, car show, displays, rocker cover racing, entertainment for young and old and not to mention the Wacky Racers competing down William Street. “This reason for cancelling this year’s event is not the complete lack of council support, but their insistence on making us pay $2500 for the traffic management plan and their accompanying signs. “It just does not make any commercial sense. “I would like to stress, it is not about the money, it is about the council profiting from someone providing a community event that already generates substantial tourism and media that benefits the entire community.” The Free Times asked council to respond to the media release issued by Total Driver yesterday, Wednesday 6 September, in which the cancellation was announced. A spokeswoman for the Southern Downs Regional Council said, “the decision not to run Warwick Wacky Racers has been made by the applicant”. “Council respects that decision and makes no further comment.” Total Driver has said they would now move the Warwick event to Toowoomba. ●

CHIP IN FOR CANCER RESEARCH It’s time to catch up with your favourite ladies to change the lives of women affected by cancer. Thousands of women across the state are expected to attend or host a Cancer Council ‘Girls’ Night In’ during the month of October to raise funds and awareness for breast and gynaecological cancers. Cancer Council Queensland CEO Chris McMillan urges all women to make a date for Girls’ Night In, talk about health and show support for other women impacted by cancer. “Hosting a Girls’ Night In is the perfect opportunity to get together with friends, while raising funds to support the one in six Queensland women who will be diagnosed with a breast or gynaecological cancer in their lifetime,” Ms McMillan said. “Events can be as big or small as you

would like - we’re expecting about 1200 pamper parties, clothes swaps, cooking nights or games nights this year in Queensland alone.” Every event gives hope to around 4200 women diagnosed with a women’s cancer each year in Queensland. Sadly, around 830 women also die from the disease on an annual basis. A Girls’ Night In costs a fraction of the price of going out and Ms McMillan encouraged those who attend Girls’ Nights In events to donate the money they saved to help those affected by cancer. Breast and gynaecological cancer facts: · Every day in Queensland, 12 women are diagnosed with a breast or gynaecological cancer and two die from the disease. · Women’s cancers include cancers of the breast, cervix, ovaries, uterus, vagina and vulva.

· Thanks to advances in cancer research, early detection and prevention, 86 per cent of women are now surviving from a women’s cancer at least five years post diagnosis. Find out more:

WEAPONS CACHE UNCOVERED Police last month allegedly located a large number of illegal firearms and ammunition that had been buried on a property near Stanthorpe. It is alleged detectives had been conducting follow-up investigations in relation to the cold case murder of Philip Carlyle in 1997 when they located 11 handguns, two AR-15 rifles with fully automatic components, three rifle barrels - major components for longarm firearms - and in excess of 10,000 rounds of ammunition. A police media statement released on Monday said the firearms were allegedly located on Saturday 5 August in barrels, buckets and tubing buried on a property 20 minutes outside of Stanthorpe. A 66-year-old Reedy Creek man was charged with major firearms offences relating to the possession of illegal firearms and failure to secure ammunition properly and appeared in the Southport Magistrates' Court on Monday. Mr Carlyle, 47, an IT marketing manager, was found shot dead in an airconditioning plant room inside his Gold Coast office in April 1997. ●

LOTUS RED FLASH TAKES ROOT

TRY THIS …

As the weather has continued dry this week, and with no rain forecast in the foreseeable future, I thought I would continue with some more information on propagating the fabulous lotus red flash as it is really a plant everyone should find a place for. If propagating by cutting, take a tip cutting and strip off the lower leaves and pinch out the tip to make it branch out. They will require humidity to take root so maybe a plastic bag or plastic hot house would be a good idea. Resist the urge to pull a cutting up to see if roots are developing! Wait until roots can be seen coming through the drain holes. Repot to a larger pot and wait again until it is ready to put out in the ground or into a pot or hanging basket in any good free draining potting mix and enjoy a beautiful plant. An all-purpose slow release fertiliser at planting time will be of benefit in a pot or basket but in the ground mine has flourished with no special care. I will give it a feed soon though to keep it performing. I will also be looking out for the yellow flowered variety as a contrast to the beautiful red. As to succulents, if you have a dry area or rockery there is such an amazing range in size, shapes and colours it may be a useful idea to try. In another town in a past life, I had some friends who had just such an area and filled it with a wide variety of these plants and it really looked spectacular. It

I have seen some really different lilies in flower in a friend's garden recently in Warwick. I had never seen them before, but now know they are called “starfish lily” feraria crispa and that is exactly what they resemble. Other common names for this attractive lily are “Black Flag” and “Sea Spider”. From information I have been able to access, they come in two colours being purple and yellow. They are a perennial bulb, grow up to about 18 inches/45cm tall with the most amazing velvety, textured flowers that have three large and three short petals with very intricately frilled edges. They appear to be quite easy to grow. The flowers are only small (about 5cm across) but absolutely stunning, open successively on a multi-branched stem and each corm produces two to three stems. The corms are very unusual in shape, and it may be hard to tell which way is up so just plant them sideways and they will sort it out! They like to be about 4-5cm under the soil and 5cm apart. They come from South Africa and really enjoy hot dry summers and wet winters. Certainly worth trying to find and try. ●

was a dry bank from their high block down to the road, and these plants succeeded where all other options had failed to hold the soil and provide colour and interest as you pulled up kerb side. Colourful pig-face in different colours and leaf sizes provided huge splashes of brilliance and a mixture of sedums and Echeveria of various sizes and colours and different coloured flowers completed the picture and was very easy care. I’ve just had my attention drawn to some beautiful sedems in a catalogue with green leaves with pink edges, pink and mauve leaves and all with pink flowers on red/pink stems. The common blue grey rosette succulents

I have in a pot that seem to thrive on neglect and send up lovely spikes of red and yellow bell flowers are echeveria and come in an amazing range of colours from blues to deep red, bright red and a whole range in between. Some of the hybrids have frilly pink edges to the leaves and others have bright red tips. I have an area adjacent to the house that is probably an ideal place to have some as it is very difficult to keep watered for most other plants. When I was a child, the “Mother of Millions” was a common garden plant until it was realised it really was true to its name! It now presents an environmental problem out in the Goondiwindi area and probably other areas that I haven’t seen, growing freely along the roadside and in adjoining paddocks. They do look spectacular with their lovely red flower heads standing tall as you drive by. As they grow from every little leaf segment, they are almost impossible to eradicate in a paddock where livestock graze or native animals inhabit as they attach to them and spread widely as they move about, so this is one to avoid at all costs! Don’t forget the Garden Competition coming up in October. Entry forms are available as usual from Bryson’s Place at their new address 66 Palmerin Street. Entries close on Friday 6 October with judging commencing on Monday 9 October. ●

THE STORY OF THE POTTERS The Warwick Potters’ Association was formed in 1973 by an enthusiastic group, keen to learn pottery. A permanent home was difficult to maintain until the old Warwick Water Inspector’s residence in Barnes Park became available in 1986. Helen Madsen had the foresight to secure the house for the growing band of potters. Four years were spent renovating the

The Hot Pots Soup Night and Clay Art Exhibition during Jumpers and Jazz is a special highlight for the potters, who volunteer their time to organise this and many other community events. FOCUS ON … School Holidays

LET’S GET PHYSICAL If you are after something a little different, fun and physical for your children these September holidays, then look no further than your local YMCA, based at the Warwick Indoor Recreation and Aquatic Centre (WIRAC). The YMCA is all about empowering young people and promoting healthy living, so feel confident in bringing along your children to any of the following activities. WIRAC has its own internal rock wall and continue to run their world-famous ‘Rock Wall and Swim’ program every Tuesday and Thursday during the holidays. From 4.30pm to 5.30pm participants can pay just $5 and get one hour of rock wall activity and then follow this up with a swim. WIRAC wants to encourage more of the community to give their rock wall a go - there are 12 different rope climbs to choose from - so they are even running a free ‘Belay Instructor Course’ on Thursday 28 Sep so parents and siblings can use the rock wall on their own. You can choose

either 12 noon or 5pm for this 60-minute course and it’s free. Each Wednesday, WIRAC will conduct an all-day sports clinic and children can participate in netball, basketball, futsal or the rock wall. At the end of the day, they can finish with a free swim - they'll sleep well after this day. They can choose their sessions - $12 per session or pay $40 for the day. During the second week of the holidays, WIRAC will conduct a learn to swim intensive program for primary aged children. As part of LTS week, they are offering one session free when you book and pay for the five sessions. First-in, best-dressed - so don’t leave it for too long as this is a great way to progress your child through the learn to swim skills and competencies. WIRAC is also supporting the Anglicare Holiday Program on Monday 25 September. This is a free day for five to 12-yearolds, but you must book through Anglicare on 1300 114 397. For all other details call WIRAC on 4661 7955. ●

THE SPIN

RUNNING WITH A SENSE OF DIRECTION ORIENTEERS TAKE ON AMIENS Competitors from as young as 10 to 85 made up the 180 orienteers from across Australia and a contingent from overseas navigated their way through the Amiens forest last weekend for two days of Orienteering in Qld Championships. Among the winners was Warwick’s Simeon Burrill who won the Men’s Under 21 event. Earlier in the year, Burrill competed in the Junior World Championships in Finland. Orienteering is growing popularity as a sport and on the weekend it was easy to see how and why it is such a family oriented sport. Parents and children can compete side by side and enjoy the outdoors together. Bullecourt Bounders hosted the event in conjunction with Toowoomba club Range Runners. Local representative Liz Bourne was delighted with the event, but had her hands full when one of the junior female competitors injured her knee in a remote location and had to be stretchered out of the forest. Both inter-state and overseas competitors praised the weekend’s courses which are rated by many as some of the best they have seen because of their diversity. FINALS BUZZ There is the fizz of finals football in the air after an amazing start to the NRL finals. What a smorgasbord of great games. If you are a League fan and didn’t enjoy week one of the finals then you are very hard to please. Nail-biting finishes, amazing come-frombehind wins, Cam Smith’s record breaking game and, of course, heart break and losses. You can tell there will be more stings in the tail of the 2017 finals before we get to the GF. The Melbourne Storm still look warm favourites but were not at their very best against the Eels. They still found a way to win and are sure to iron out a few glitches during their week off. Roosters fans were cock-a-hoop after they stole a win from under the Broncos noses. While the Roosters enjoy a week off, the Broncos can expect to be doing plenty of work after copping a verbal caning from their normally tight lipped coach. The Panthers closed the door on the Sea Eagles season in an impressive performance. There was none more impressive than the Cowboys, who it seems don’t mind giving their supporters and coach heart palpitations, leaving it until the last gasp to snatch victory from the Sharks. And so the carnival roles on. This week the Broncos host the Panthers with the rumour mill in overdrive suggesting captain Matt Moylan is set to make a surprise return. Reports suggest it is doubtful that the Broncos captain will recover from his hamstring problem to join the team. Hard to see the Broncos playing worse than they did last week, and I doubt there is much more improvement left in the Panthers. Broncos to redeem themselves at Suncorp. The Cowboys feature in another thriller when they meet the Eels in the second semi-final. No tomorrows if you lose here. The Cowboys go into the game again as underdogs with the Eels expected to win, but that means little to the Cowboys who have shown they fear no side. There are more mouth-watering match ups to look forward to in this game. The Cowboys probably shouldn’t win, but after last week you just have to believe. The impossible they can do miracles take them just a little longer. 22 SOUTHERN FREE TIMES

Ballandean player Tim Carnell gets his side on the board with a header that landed in the back of the net in the recent Stanthorpe Football grand final. Unfortunately, it was not enough to get his side a win. THEY CAME AND TRIED Organisers of the Mallet Players Come N Try Day at the Stanthorpe croquet facilities were pleased with the number of prospective players who attended their open day on Saturday. It rounded out a busy period for club members who have been juggling normal fixtures, selling raffle tickets and preparing for the Come N Try morning. Lucky winner of the annual raffle was L. Hagaman. The funds raised from the raffle will contribute to the costs associated with the coring and sanding of the greens. The golf croquet group pitched in to set up the field in preparation for the Come N Try day while many others were busy cooking up a storm for a special morning tea. The group was joined by an unexpected but special visitor who surveyed the goings on from the safety of a nearby gumtree - a koala. First on the itinerary was golf croquet. Captain Elaine Brown mentored the guests and members. One of the guests even scored a hole-in-one, which he modestly attributed to good luck. Association croquet began at 11.30am, under the experienced guidance of qualified coaches Pat Schnoor and Margaret Dickenson. Three guests and three club members who had not previously played this game joined in the fun. These matches normally run for about two hours, so the players retired well before that and enjoyed the lunch break. Following the break, guests joined the group of experienced players in their first game of gateball. Andrea Denkewitz refereed the game and guided the new players. The novices played extremely well during the three-game match. Some accurate strokes and a bit of rivalry made for interesting and enjoyable play. The club anticipates several will join the ranks shortly. If you have any inquiries, give Sharyn a call on 4681 2186 or drop in to the croquet greens on Tuesday, Wednesday or Friday mornings. ACCIDENT SHAKES RUGBY LEAGUE COMMUNITY The thoughts and prayers of the rugby league community have been with a Goondiwindi family involved in a single vehicle accident as they travelled Clifton last weekend for grand final games. The incident has shaken the entire rugby league community. As a result of the accident the under-14 grand final was cancelled and the Goondiwindi Blue and the MIT Jets/ Gremlins declared joint winners. The girls League Tag grand final between Goondiwindi and Tenterfield was postponed to a date to be decided however on Monday

Thursday, 14 September, 2017

it was announced that out of respect, the Goondiwindi girls would not contest the final handing the premiership to Tenterfield. Two of the scheduled grand finals were decided on Saturday. In the under-12 game Tenterfield defeated Wattles 30-22 and in the under-16 game Goondiwindi Blue had a 24-16 win over Collegians Blue. A Go Fund Me account has been set up by the GJRL to help support the family involved in the accident. All monies raised will go directly to helping with rehabilitation expenses for all involved. Donations can also be made directly to the club’s bank account if preferred. For further details, contact the Goondiwindi Junior Rugby League or visit their Facebook page. BILLYCART WASHUP The rivalry was intense as competitors in each round of the 2017 Billycart Bash lined up in the shadows of the Ballandean Pyramid. Most importantly Billycarters of all ages, spectators and organisers had a great time. The maximum speed clocked down Jacobsen Road this year was 48kmph. In a nod toward the high standard of carts and drivers there were only three minor incidents on the track and most importantly no injuries. Keeping the win “in house” in the opens event was Ballandean State School acting principal, Sue Evans, racing one of the stable of Haynes Racing Carts. For her efforts, Evans took home a trophy and won the V8cuper car driving experience at the Holder performance Driving Centre, Norwell. She is sure to get an adrenalin rush when she takes up the Hot Laps offer. The major prize once again kindly donated by Sirromet Wines. Winners from the 5-7, 8-11, and 12-15 age categories all received a trophy and the first place getters picked up a $40 voucher from Bendigo Bank Stanthorpe community branch. There are some familiar names from previous Billycart Bash events as the youngsters progress through the ranks and improve their skills. Category winners 5-7 age group sponsored by Landmark Ballandean:-1st Lilly Simpson; 2nd Ruby Galvin; 3rd Amelia Perkins 8-11 Age group sponsored by Speranzas Mobile Welding: - 1st Brendan Wells, 2nd Hunter Robertson; 3rd Zane Daley 12-15 Age Group sponsored by Wilshire and Co:-1st Sidney Hollingsworth; 2nd Allegra Daveson; 3rd Mathew Pickham. Opens sponsored by Lindsay Transport: - 1st Susan Evans; 2nd Tom Scott; 3rd Kerri Muller. The Schools Challenge was won by Stanthorpe State High (Sidney Hollingsworth) and the Pride of Eukey race

was won by Kerri Muller. Organisers wish to thanks the many sponsors, the small army of volunteers, entrants and spectators who again helped to make this Ballandean State School fundraiser another success. Photos of the day are available for purchase at www. shaneandersenphotography.net.bash WREN GRABS THE ATTENTION Dianne Wren caught the attention of all her fellow players last week during the golf croquet games when she executed a clever jump Shot from two feet out, and her efforts bought play to a halt. Shirley Page and Justin Liddy each landed a hole in one, and on a day where skills were well and truly on display Elaine Brown and Shirley Page had the top aggregate score of 11. In game one, Val Fancourt and Dianne Wren had a 13-10 win over Shirley Page and Bev Sullivan. Elaine Brown and Justin Liddy, each played two balls and the game ended in an 11-all draw. Both scored six with one ball and five with the second. Game two was a triples game and Elaine Brown, Val Fancourt and Justin Liddy played Dianne Wren, Bev Sullivan and Shirley page. This game also finished in a 10-all draw. Scores in all the games played this week illustrate just how even the competition is at the moment. MCMILLAN BREAKS DROUGHT On Saturday, a good field turned out for the single stableford played at the Wallangarra Golf club. Winner, Brendan McMillian ended a short drought when he finished one clear of runner-up Kevin Williams. Tony Murphy took out the captain stakes and topped off a good day by taking the approach on the 14th and snaring the birdies nest on the seventh. Steve Hampstead didn’t go home empty-handed; he took the pin shot on the 15th. It will be busy on the Wallangarra greens this weekend. A single stroke will be played on Saturday and will be followed by the annual Golf World Day Two Ball Ambrose, on Sunday. Cost of Sunday’s game is $25 per person and lunch is included. Tee off is between 9am and 9.30am. Grab your partner for an enjoyable day. Golfers and non-golfers are all welcome. THREE TIMES A BREEZE FOR WATERWORTH AND O’BRIEN The Stanthorpe Foursomes championships was decided last Sunday, an alternate shot event played over 27 holes. The team of Matt Waterworth and Mick O’Brien returned a winning score of 117 to continue their dominance in this event, taking the title for the third year running. Taking the Second division title was the team of Graham Tonkin and Ron Batterham who needed 134 for the round to take the win. The Best nett scores in A Division went to Tom Fittock and Alan Kerr and in second division it was the pairing of Angelo Maugeri and Aaron Simmers. The ladies event, also played over 27 holes, came down to an extra hole play-off before Lynette Ludlow and Racheal Hendry claimed the title. Neta Thouard and Lorraine Evans, unsuccessful in the play off, did however end up with the best nett in the ladies event. The men’s Foursome event was sponsored by Andersens Carpets and Lyn Ludlow and Mandy Benussi sponsored the ladies’ foursome event. freetimes.com.au

WIN FOR THORN Ray Thorn has been a stalwart of the Stanthorpe Sporters Club for many years, and this week the stalwart of Sunday golf in Stanthorpe bagged himself a competition win. Ian Anderson played well to grab the offering for the runner-up and also shot the Best Gross score of the round. The run-downs went the way of John Rawlings and Phil Zikan. There were no takers for the pin shot on the 12th but it was Brendon Barker who took pin at the 17th and also the Pro Pin. Sneaking off with the meat trays on Sunday were winners Jordy Barker and Peter Goodsir. Sporters tee off at the same time each Sunday - between 8am and 8.30am each Sunday. Visitors and first time players are always made very welcome. HANCOCK NAMED FOR HISTORY MAKING GAME Stephanie Hancock will tick off another box in her long and illustrious career in Women’s Rugby League after her selection in the Jillaroos team this week to play in a historymaking match against the Papua New Guinea Orchids in Port Moresby later this month. With the World Cup on our doorstep, Jillaroos coach Brad Donald sees the game as a great opportunity to showcase the female game in rugby league-crazy New Guinea and a unique chance to test his side against another World Cup nation in an away international. Even for Hancock, one of the most capped Jillaroos in the side, playing in PNG in front of a packed and passionate PNG crowd away from home on 23 September will be a new experience. The Harvey Norman Jillaroos and Prime Minister’s XIII squads will also be involved in a series of events, community

In the men’s event four players retuned a score of 40 points. After a consuming countback, it was Max Hunter who emerged as the winner, relegating Rob reeves to second post while Ian Pickering and Richard Reardon, settled for the run down. Things were a little more clear-cut in the Ladies event where Margie Locke finished the round with 39 points and a two-point advantage over Tric Fittock to claim the prize. Margie Locke had best approach at 17. The run down went to 38 points for the men and 35 for the ladies. The club is hosting the Darling Downs Vets next Monday. Players will be hoping there is no repeat of the outcome of the Vets last visit. The game was over after a couple of holes after a downpour caused play to be abandoned. There is no doubt we would welcome the rain, however after a full 18 holes are completed if the weather gods don’t mind. Next Saturday’s club competition is a single stableford which sponsored by Ron and Annelle Batterham. Tee off is from 11am and the time sheet is on the board at the club. ILL HEALTH PLAYS A PART Ill health impacted numbers playing in the association croquet games last week, but there were a few hearty souls who made it on to the court. Grace Howard began with a flourish during a break of six, but it was Pat Schnoor who came through to take the win defeating Val Richards and Grace Howard 26 - 14 after one break of four and two breaks of three in the game. Margaret Dickenson had a win over Effey Russell after scoring a break of four and one of three. The final score 23-17.

On Saturday, we hosted the Condamine Medical Centre for a charity barefoot bowls afternoon in lieu of our usual mixed social bowls. We had four rinks of fours and one of pairs. Prizes for the winners and consolation winners were drawn from a

hat. The bowls were followed by a delicious barbecue meal, but it was too cold to go out for a game of night bowls after that. Our visitors really enjoyed themselves. The club thank the Condamine Medical Centre for their patronage. To show our appreciation, the club made a donation of 50 per cent of the green fees to their charity. The club also must thank the Warwick East ladies who toiled for several hours doing the catering, as well as our members who cooked the barbecue, manned the bar and helped with setting up the rinks, coaching the nonbowlers in the finer points of the game and putting everything away after the game. On Saturday the club will have mixed social bowls as usual. Play starts at 1pm, with names to be in by phoning the club on 4661 9050 between noon and 12.30pm. There will be trophies on offer, as well as a chance to try for the jackpot, which will be worth about $115, plus $1 per Saturday player. There will be no social bowls on Saturday 23 September, as we will be hosting the district pair’s competition. Finally, don’t forget to add your name to the sign-up sheet in the clubhouse if you would like to participate in our singles competition. ●
