Our Tigerland! With the whiff of perhaps Giantkilling their way into a grand final, Tiger fans in Casey are proudly emerging from the wilderness. Richmond Football Club cheersquad member Dave Coppin, of Berwick, is freshening up the colours of his club-themed tattoo ahead of a sellout AFL preliminary final at the MCG on 23 September. The tatt is on the top of his temple - a Jesus-like figure wearing a Richmond jumper. He wants well-inked star player Dustin Martin to sign the sash on the tattoo, if the Tiges win the flag. “Punt Road will be going off for a minimum of a week!” Mr Coppin’s devotion includes a signed lace-up premiership jumper worn by legendary hardman Robbie McGhie. There’s also a badge-laden jacket with 30 years of cheer squad patches and a full set of WEG premiership posters. Mr Coppin is ready to roar behind the Punt Road goals, encircled by a rumbling colosseum of 90,000 mainly Tiger fans in the high-stakes preliminary against Greater Western Sydney Giants. Pundits predict perhaps 1000 Giants fans to be engulfed in the chorus. As part of the massive ‘Tiger Army’, he said he’d never heard a louder crowd noise than the recent qualifying win against Geelong. It was aggressive, like “going to war”. “They’re starting to roar. They’re getting manic, absolutely desperate for the win. “As an adult you realise what it means. You well up with joy - we were all in tears.” Before that game, he felt a knot

of sickness. It’s a more relaxed team on the field though, led by Dusty, Cotch, Rance, Jack and the ‘mosquito fleet’. “We’ve never been this confident at Richmond. The monkey is off the back.

“I can’t see us losing the prelim. I reckon we’re already in the Granny.” Kim Chante, of Narre Warren South, says she had a premonition at the start of the season that the Tigers would win the flag. From their couch, she and her kids Ashley, Danny and Lyndsay

will be nearly able to hear the Tiger Army, she says. There’s a soothing mass of Buddha statues in her home. But when the Tigers are playing, Ms Chante’s passion flares up. Continued page 14

Walls that speak volumes By Cam Lucadou-Wells Berwick Mechanics Institute and Free Library is one of the few of its types still standing in Victoria. The volunteer-run libraries were the rage in the 19th and early-20th century, once numbering beyond 1000 in the state, historian Ken James told the Berwick library’s AGM on 13 September. Casey used to be teeming with them - in Clyde, Clyde North, Devon Meadows, Narre Warren North, Tooradin, and of course the still-resplendent Narre Warren building. Now there are just 13 in Victoria, including the 154-year-old Berwick institution on High Street. Mr James co-authored a hefty 2.8-kilogram book These Walls Speak Volumes - a comprehensive list of all known past and present Mechanics Institute libraries in Victoria. The prolific Mechanics’ Institute movement was fuelled by a “thirst for knowledge” by inquisitive Victorians, he said. The vast construction of libraries didn’t relent even during the Great Depression of the 1890s. These free libraries built by volunteers doubled as the then rural town’s first community halls. A third of them were also used as state schools. During his research, he discovered an extra 300 unknown halls scattered through the state. Mr James noted the Berwick library was on the site of a 500-year lease offered by Robert Bain in 1878. It still holds the private book and art collection of Lord and Lady Casey as well as a number of 19th-century books. The library is still going strong - with more than 60,000 loans in the

At the same time, there were nearly 100,000 visitors, including 1862 new borrowers.

During the past year, the library also received generous estate bequests of up to $100,000. Its volunteers ventured out to schools, kindergartens and dressed up

as fairies for story-reading in Wilson Botanic Park. Badges for long service were presented to members Judith Dwyer (20 years) and Susan Griffiths (10 years).

No room to inject By Cam Lucadou-Wells Casey Council will press ahead with an “anti-drug injecting room strategy” despite doubts that a rooms trial will be legalised by State Parliament. In a meeting on 19 September, councillors overruled a council report that recommended deferring the strategy. They also voted to lobby the State Government for more drug and alcohol rehab and mental health services in Casey. Proponent Cr Susan Serey said she opposed drug-injecting rooms due to

the importance of “minimising harm to the community not just the user”. She said the rooms attracted 85 per cent more crime, without evidence that drug use was reduced. It was uncertain if a proposed trial of a medically supervised drug-injecting centre in Richmond would be passed through State Parliament, Cr Serey conceded. The State Government has stated it does not support such a trial. Cr Wayne Smith, in dissent, said the council was “putting the cart before

the horse”. He was also requested by mayor Sam Aziz to withdraw the term “scaremongering”. The council didn’t have the power to oppose injecting rooms under the planning scheme, if it otherwise met planning requirements, he said. He said he was “happy to wait” to see if the matter passed parliament first. Cr Rosalie Crestani referenced what a council report described as a “robust debate” in August between councillors and representatives of Victoria Police, CFA, Neighbourhood Watch and Hampton Park Progress Association.

Cr Crestani said a police representative thought it would be difficult to penalise drug use if police were told to keep away from injecting rooms. Neighbourhood Watch was supportive of alternatives other than an injecting room, she said. A council report stated there were opposing views on the findings of research into a medically supervised injecting centre in Kings Cross, Sydney, and its harm-minimisation approach. But there was unanimous support for more alcohol and drug rehabilitation services, it stated.

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A drink-driver distracted by eating chicken crashed head-on into another car on Evans Road, Cranbourne West, a court heard. Damian Gregory Brennan, 55, had veered across into oncoming traffic, causing extensive damage to both his car and a Mazda about 6.30pm on 23 June. With a blood-alcohol reading of .07, the heavy-machinery mechanic told police he’d drunk three fullstrength beers with mates at work. The crash probably wouldn’t have happened if “I hadn’t looked down off the road to eat a piece of chicken”. Defence lawyer Bernard Moore told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court that a “momentary distraction” cost Brennan $10,000 to pay for both cars’ repairs - his drink-driving voided any insurance claim. Brennan, who was convicted for driving offences in 2003, was “incredibly worried” about losing his licence and hence his job, Mr Moore said. The accused hadn’t drunk alcohol since the crash, the court was told. Magistrate David Starvaggi said Brennan was legislatively required to spend a minimum of six months off the road. “It’s a serious case of careless driving and drink-driving. “Obviously this could have been far worse.” Brennan was also fined, with conviction.

Vehicle theft: three netted Then-ratepayers association president Rex Flannery with co-member Brendan Browne opposing Bunjil Place in 2016. 155436 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS He said his view as a former “keyboard warrior” had changed since learning more about the inner workings of the council. He could now see the “whole picture”. “I’m now eating some humble pie. I think the officers are doing an incredible job.” Cr Flannery said his conversion didn’t mean the ratepayers’ association was now redundant. “I believe there’s a place for the ratepayers’ association.

They are there for accountability and transparency, and for the council to continue that way. “They’re our monitor.” Casey Residents and Ratepayers Association president Arvo Talvik said the group held no discontentment for Cr Flannery, dismissing Mr Bryan’s views as that of a “lone wolf”. Mr Talvik said he wasn’t surprised that Cr Flannery’s views had now changed while

“on the inside”. He said that if he himself was elected to council “I expect I’d be in the same boat”. “I don’t see anything wrong with him changing his mind on a few things. “He’s still putting himself out there and helping residents.” Cr Flannery still attended meetings and organised talks between the association and council officers. “The relationship is quite

good,” Mr Talvik said. Mr Talvik said the association remained concerned about aspects of Casey Council, such as the $125 million Bunjil Place project. “Governments should recognise they don’t have any money. The only money they have is ours. “The only thing we expect is when they spend our money it benefits the residents and ratepayers.”

Casey councillor Rex Flannery has denied a rift with the ratepayers association he co-founded, in the wake of a searing letter from a former member. In August, Cr Flannery appeared to publicly disavow himself when he apologised for his past criticisms of the council during his “past life” with the Casey Residents and Ratepayers Association. The position enraged an association co-founder William Bryan, who wrote in Star News that Cr Flannery had departed from his election platform to oppose Casey CEO Mike Tyler and mayor Sam Aziz. “His commitment to the people that supported him has been withdrawn by virtue of his apology,” Mr Bryan wrote. “He is now just another dummy in the Tyler puppet show.” Cr Flannery said he’d lost his friendship with Mr Bryan as a result of the letter, but there was “no falling out” with the association. The councillor conceded he’d changed from his original election agenda, describing both Mr Tyler and Cr Aziz as “quite pleasant”. It was the right thing to do to apologise publicly for his past misgivings, he said. “The thing is Mike Tyler’s got a five-year contract, so there’s no need to rock the boat and cause any dramas about it.” Cr Flannery said his opinion of Cr Aziz had been fuelled by the mayor’s comments towards others. “We’ve since mended those bridges.” “I don’t socialise with the CEO or the mayor. I’m not in their pockets.”

Three men are set to be charged over the theft of a ute in Narre Warren on 14 September. The Titan ute was allegedly stolen from a Webb Street address just after 7am. That morning about 10.20am, police arrested an 18-year-old Ringwood man in Gladys Court, Clarinda. Shortly afterwards, a 28-yearold Bayswater man and an 18-yearold Mooroolbark man were arrested in Sundowner Street, Clarinda. Police say they expect to charge the men with theft of motor vehicle and numerous traffic offences including endangering serious injury. The men may also face breach of parole and bail offences.

No bail for stalker in a car park, the accused allegedly tried to open the locked car doors and then struck on the car windows with his hands. The victim took photos of him next to the car - with confirmation of the geographic location, police informant Acting Sergeant Craig Milne told police. The accused told police the victim’s friend had got out of the car at a McDonald’s outlet and punched the accused several times to the head. “They’re making up stories to get me,” he allegedly told police. That night, he allegedly returned to the victim’s home. “The victim is concerned for her welfare and would be concerned if he would be granted bail,” Acting Sgt Milne said. The man had been previously jailed for seven days for breaching an intervention order in November, phoning the victim up to 130 times a day, haranguing her for money and

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Twice-jailed for family violence, a Doveton man has denied stalking the same victim days after being released from prison. During a failed bail application, the 29-year-old argued in court he had been manipulated when photographed by his ex-partner in a Springvale car park in May. He faces charges including stalking, persistently breaching an intervention order and unlawful assault. He had been on two community corrections orders at the time. The man also denied approaching the woman outside her house in breach of an intervention order, asking for forgiveness and for her not to tell police, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard, She claimed he then followed her in his car and harassed her as she walked by foot to Springvale railway station. As she sat in a male friend’s car

visiting her at work. During an encounter in November, he refused to leave her car. When she tried to drive to a police station, he grabbed the steering wheel and caused the car to swerve into nearby traffic lanes. On 3 May, he was again jailed for a week for a further breach. Three days after being released from jail, he allegedly committed his most recent offences. Defence barrister Roona Nida said the man had never been in trouble with the law prior to November, and had been locked in remand since his arrest on 18 May. “The problems started as a result of having a relationship with the alleged victim.” She said that the man had been confused about the intervention orders. As an Afghani, the man had “moved on” now that he knew the relationship was over. Referring to a psychologist’s report, magistrate Jack Vandersteen

retorted: “He sees himself as the victim, doesn’t he? “He feels that these allegations are a complete nonsense.” Mr Vandersteen said the risk to the complainant increases substantially with physical breaches of intervention orders. “The difficulty is this: I can’t think of any (bail) conditions to reduce the risk of re-offending.” If found guilty, the man’s sentence could well exceed his four months in remand due to breaching two community corrections order, he said. “On the face of it, the prosecution case appears strong given that photo. “It’s the same victim, his third breach of an intervention order ... He’ll be facing a substantial term of imprisonment.” The man will appear at a contest hearing at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 18 October.

Lighting up a village gateway By Cam Lucadou-Wells A new light may be shone on the trees and monuments gracing Berwick’s High Street by Christmas time. Casey Council has approved the use of LED lights on the trees, the Lord Casey statue and footpaths in the picturesque Berwick Village gateway. In a meeting on 19 September, the council approved stage-one works for eight coloured up-lights on four trees and a white spotlight on the Lord Casey statue at a cost of up to $60,000. “The lighting of such elements

would create and dramatically improve the western entry into the village, creating a sense of arrival for people in cars and on foot,” a council report stated. “The lighting would also aid pedestrian safety in this area and improve visibility for people gathering at Anzac memorial services when the area is extremely crowded.” The lights were designed to withstand harsh weather and vandalism. They would be installed outside the trees’ “critical root zones”, and would have no impact on the trees’ health.

Councillor Timothy Jackson said, "it will really make that area come alive at night time.” The council will aim to accede to a Berwick Business Group request that the lights be installed and switched on before Christmas. It ruled out the BBG’s desire to reinstate decorative lights in some of the large trees due to the impact on their health. In the council’s concept plan, there are also future plans to light footpaths and trees at the eastern end of the median strip.

On Wednesday 13 September the Cranbourne-Berwick News Facebook Page shared the story of a four-year-old girl who fell ill after being served with raw chicken nuggets from a McDonald’s outlet in Berwick. The girl’s mother, Sarah Dougherty, said she’d bought the nuggets as part of a Happy Meal treat from the store on Clyde and Homestead roads on the evening of 8 September. On inspection, the meat within the warm nuggets was bright pink and raw. The girl suffered “the runs” for at least the next four days. The story brought forward some strong opinions from readers and here is how they reacted online.

Selda Nunuvero: A few weeks ago two of my girls had two happy meals with a chicken wrap - the chicken was not cooked, was still hard and chewy - she did get sick a day after, this was at Springhill McDonalds in Cranbourne. Greg LeMerle: I’m more surprised that those nuggets weren’t pre-cooked a thousand times before it reached that kid’s happy meal. James Shepley: That is s***, I bet they even forgot the sauce. Actually, did you have to go around twice just to get your raw nuggs? Christopher Emolution Brent: Mistakes happen; the people working there are only human and humans especially kids/ teens make mistakes, but McDonald’s response to the whole situation is a bit ridiculous. Dianne Wickman: Can’t believe people still eat their crappy food. Elma-Mavis Siaopo: Same thing happened to my one-year-old and pregnant sister ate these from Hampton Park McDonalds. Sheree Smith: Alexandra Daboul this happened to you there too. Mark Mathews: This cannot be right, as there is no real meat in McDonalds food. As an independent, Councillor Rex Flannery is elected to the City of Casey Council to represent the people in his ward, which is Springfield Ward. He is on council to look after the 3 R's, "roads, rates and rubbish"; and such other business as local councils take care of. He is elected to represent the interests of the people living or paying rates in the Ward, and not those of any one individual, or any one organisation. Karen Young, Casey.

Not so free The opening phrase of our National Anthem is “Australians all let us rejoice for we are young and free”. Are we really all free? The

Ray’s say

freedoms that so many of us have taken for granted for so long are gradually being eroded: freedom of speech, freedom of religion and freedom of choice. Some people have been taken to court just because others disagree with them or are offended by what they say. I’m glad the we have the opportunity to have our say on the issue of marriage. Former Prime Minister John Howard said recently: "Changing the definition of marriage ... is not an exercise in human rights and equality; it is an exercise in de-authorising the Judaeo-Christian influence in our society.” I agree with him. As a Christian I am concerned with the current trends in our society. Should marriage be redefined there will be far-reaching consequences for families, children and our society as a whole. Fined $8000 By Cam Lucadou-Wells The operator of Hampton Park’s tip has been fined following neighbours’ complaints of a bad stench. Suez Recycling and Recovery was fined nearly $8000 by the Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) for the escape of odour outside its landfill boundaries. On inspection in July, EPA officers found areas of exposed waste that were in breach of Suez’s EPA licence. EPA southern metro manager Marleen Mathias said the waste should have been covered by at least 30 centimetres of soil cover. Covering was also required to reduce vermin, contaminated stormwater issues, odours and litter impacting on the local environment. “In this case, waste outside of the active tipping face had clearly not been covered and was exposed when EPA officers inspected the site.” “This breach was avoidable; Suez Recycling and Recovery is aware of its licence conditions, and in this case correct management and monitoring of exposed litter would have avoided the fine for failing to cover exposed waste.” EPA would continue to monitor the site to ensure Suez’s compliance, Ms Mathias said. Suez state general manager Kelvin Sargent said the company “acknowledge” the infringement.

In 2015, Suez was put on notice for methane levels above the “upper explosive limit”, with a third of its gas extraction wells found to be blocked, too wet, turned off or disconnected or had slow gas flow rates. Last year, Suez installed 22 perimeter landfill bores in response. Nearby residents, as close as 100 metres from the tip,

have long complained of the tip’s stench, Cr Damien Rosario recently told Star News. “At its worst, I have to close all my windows,” Cr Rosario said. “Residents here don’t want to invite people over to their houses because of the smell. “Thank God someone is taking action.” The tip has been the subject of three PANs in the past two years and an EPA enforcement action in 2012. Suez has a planning permit from Casey Council to operate the tip until 2040. The EPA has advised people to call its Pollution Hotline on 1300 372 842 (1300 EPA VIC), if there are ongoing odour issues from the landfill. Suez also has an “environmental feedback hotline” on 1800 368 737.

Fresh reports of thick “sawdust storms” have emerged in Hallam, just ahead of scheduled Environment Protection Authority Victoria inspections of two soil yards. Business owner Zlatibor Prvulovic told Star News that his neighbouring industrial chemist lab continues to be showered by sawdust, four months after the EPA issued Pollution Abatement Notices to the yards operated by Bark King and Folino Plant Hire. Mr Prvulovic said the most recent “storm” was carried by a southerly wind onto businesses in Bolt Court on 8 September. “At times the sawdust storm is quite thick, impossible to breathe and to have your eyes open. “I’ve had enough of breathing sawdust, it’s totally ridiculous. “This problem has been going

on for over a year.” In a statement, the EPA said it had received site layout and dust management plans from both soil yard proprietors - with an extension of deadline requested by Folino Plant Hire. “EPA is currently assessing the dust management plans for both sites, and will inspect both sites in the next fortnight to confirm that appropriate site controls have been implemented.” In May, Bark King and Folino were issued PANs - with a 31 August deadline to prevent dust escaping their boundaries. According to the notices, excessive rates of dust deposits from the yards had coated a neighbouring industrial workplace. The highest reading of dust in nearby Bolt Court was 9.42

grams per square metre per month in January - more than double the four-gram amenity standard in NSW. “Numerous potential sources of dust are present on your premises and likely to be a source of dust emissions,” the notices stated to Bark King Group and Folino Plant Hire. Hampton Park residents living about 300 metres south of the yards have also long complained of dust pollution. The residents in Rowland Close and Glenora Way report regular and severe hay-fever, skin hives, asthma attacks, coughing and sore eyes suffered by children, young and old residents alike. If they fail to comply, the companies face fines of up to $777,300 if prosecuted in court.

Many families doing it tough

Free School Holiday Fun!

By Brendan Rees Soaring power bills and crippling living costs have forced many cash-strapped families in Casey to turn to charities for help. Figures from the Society of St Vincent de Paul show more than a five per cent increase in the number of people in Casey needing support over the past three years. St Vincent’s regional president for Casey and Cardinia Caroline Arnett said rising household bills were hurting families. “Every day there will be calls from people are saying they are in risk of being made homeless or being evicted because they can’t pay their rent. And they might have three or four or even five children,” she said. Ms Arnett said St Vincent’s was visiting on average 497 people per month, adding Cranbourne was “under the pump” with calls from the community as more people were in danger of being evicted from their homes. “We had quite a few incidences recently of people living in their cars. Just providing assistance there and assisting people to get back on their feet.” St Vincent’s had also seen a 30 per cent rise in providing material aid and support delivered to people in the City of Casey and surrounding areas. Ms Arnett said St Vincent’s recently helped a Casey mother of four children who were freezing in their home. “The call came in later on a Friday and they needed blankets and some bedding. Normally we would visit on a Monday. So a couple of people went down and saw the family, found out their circumstances, then went to Target and bought blankets. “She was freezing. Absolutely freezing. Two of kids were very young. How could you walk away from them and leave them a whole weekend to freeze?” Among those in need of help is Jo, of Cranbourne, who regularly uses the Vinnies soup van when it stops in Cranbourne. Jo, who wished not be reveal her surname, has been unemployed since suffering a work injury a year ago but hopes to

She says if it wasn’t for the Vinnies soup van “I’d be very hungry ... probably sick”. “I have friends who appreciate it. They are unable to make it here so I help them out in coming here to get them food. But a lot of people are doing it hard at the moment and if they didn’t have this type of service there would be a lot of suffering.” St Vincent’s Southern Central Council deputy president Michael Quinn said the situation was “getting worse” with people paying up $400 a week for rent, leaving them with not much left for food expenses. “They can’t afford to feed their children. They can’t afford to feed themselves.” “Parents are struggling to pay for school fees. They’re struggling to send their children

on school camps. They’re struggling to pay for uniforms,” he said. Rising gas and electricity bills, he said, were alarming, adding “these things are going up 30 to 40 per cent,” with many on the brink of homelessness. He said all calls were assessed on a case-by-case basis and St Vincent’s was committed to supporting people experiencing poverty and social isolation, face to face. “We don’t get any government funding at all. We have our stores and people can help the society by supporting our stores.” Cranbourne MP Jude Perera said the State Government had invested $799 million in housing and homelessness support, and would deliver more than 6000 social housing units.

Compulsive hoarders, whose cluttered yards become a public eyesore, will be offered help before the long arm of the law under a new policy at Casey Council. Cr Wayne Smith told a council meeting on Tuesday 19 September that Casey needed a new approach, citing the example of unsuccessful action against an “infamous” property in his River Gum Ward. Casey had made many attempts to force the owner to clean up the house, which was regarded as a magnet for vermin and an eyesore for neighbours. “It would be clear for a few weeks or a month or so, then it reverts back to its old state.” Real estate agents would deliberately divert potential buyers in the area from seeing the property, Cr Smith said. Often behind each hoarder, there was however an underlying mental health issue, he said. Casey city planning manager Nicola Ward said its new hoarding and squalor protocol would allow the individual to be referred to support agencies for rehabilitation. She said there were various forms of hoarding, including recycling waste, animals and furniture. Each required a different response.

A notorious hoarding property in Casey. 36052 Picture: LUKE PLUMMER “This is on the assumption that they’re willing to accept that referral or that help. “If not, we will need to go into punitive measures.” According to a council report, Casey had used few referral agencies in the past. Its response was “punitive and reactive in nature” that included organising the removal of offending items and prosecution in the courts. “Where action is taken it becomes a costly and resourceintensive effort,” it stated.

It was a “complex issue with no clear, easy or simple response” requiring the intervention of various agencies Each case could include a mixture of possible heath, hygiene, fire hazards, animal welfare, child protection and building safety issues. Some of the suggested referral agencies include the Department of Health and Human Services, My Aged Care, RSPCA and the CFA. A draft policy is expected to be completed in September 2018.

A Berwick art group has declared the show must go on, despite been ‘robbed’ of funding from Casey Council. Provenance Artists will be staging ‘The Greatest Art Show’ on 22-24 September thanks to the support from another local art group, the Berwick Artists Society. President Calvin Bell said the “shocked and very disappointed” Provenance Artists committee were set to cancel the show after Casey Council withdrew its approved $3000 grant at the 11th hour. The council instead gave the grant to Berwick Business Group for a community Christmas party.

“It is unfortunate that the City gives outstanding support to sporting and performing arts and now to a business group for a Christmas party.” Mr Bell said it was wrong for Casey to overlook not-forprofit societies in favour of a business group, which already received membership fees from traders. “(We) have no income, and rely solely on volunteers and the goodwill of patrons, artists and businesses.” Recently, Cr Timothy Jackson told Star News the decision was unfortunate but necessary. “The Berwick Business Group hosted a wonderful Christmas event for the community and local business

which I attended. This was attended by more than 2500 people,” he said. “While it would be great to be able to fund every event and every community group, it just isn’t feasible to do so. “I hope that should further money become available, we may be able to fund the art group again.” The Provenance Artists’ revived show will feature fine art from Victorian artists as well as top Sydney painter Kasey Sealy and scratchboard artist Carol Gorenko. It is at Nossal High School auditorium, 100 Clyde Road, Berwick on 22-24 September, 10am-5pm.

Sparkle of love By Brendan Rees A Narre Warren South couple have celebrated a milestone occasion - their 60th wedding anniversary. And a special guest, Casey mayor Sam Aziz marked the joyous day by visiting Bruce and Joyce Masters at their home on Tuesday 19 September where he presented them with a certificate of congratulations on behalf of the City of Casey. Mrs Masters said the mayor’s visit was lovely. “Our daughter was behind that. She decided to ring him up and asked to wish us a happy 60th anniversary. So he said he’d like to meet us which was nice of him.” The couple’s wedding anniversary was held on 10 August and they celebrated with family and friends at the Ranges Hotel in Gembrook. The Queen, Governor General and Prime Minister also sent the couple cards as acknowledgement of their anniversary. “We had a special cake and guests. We had a lot of family travel from a long way away. Our son lives in Hong Kong and our grandchildren live in Brisbane.” Mrs Masters said her marriage had been a “great journey”. “We’ve played tennis for all our married life. We would like to be playing still but that’s not possible. We’re getting on a bit,” she said. “We both worked at GMH

Before that we were farmers believe it or not. We changed our occupation from farmers because we were share farming and we weren’t making much money so we came down and started at General Motors together.” Mrs Masters said she met her husband at a dance in Bairnsdale, adding he had a “gentle nature”. The couple married at the Methodist Church in Bairn-

sdale and have lived in the Casey area since 1968. “We started share farming from when we were married and then we moved to Loch in South Gippsland.” “We found it wasn’t worth staying there so we moved to Dandenong and worked at General Motors for 20-odd years which helped us along,” she said. The couple have two chil-

dren, Wayne and Jenny, and five grandchildren - Matthew, 21; Nicholas, 23; Katie, 25; Josh, 23 and Melissa, 25. “We’re a close family. We’ve done a lot of things together,” Mrs Masters said, adding that reaching their 60th wedding anniversary was “amazing”. “My husband, he’s eight years older than me so we’ve done well - he’s doing well and so am I.”

From front page “For the sake of my friendships, I can’t have any friends over while I watch the game,” she says. “It’s like watching your kids play.” Ms Chante says that passion is what keeps fans loyal. “You don’t hear people say they used to barrack for Richmond.” Meanwhile, Darryl Johanning, of Narre Warren South, is flying his Tigers flag at full mast outside his house. Mr Johanning, 54, is old enough to taste the Tom Hafey golden-era four flags in 1967-’74. There’s new optimism after a nerve-wracking 37 years since the club’s last VFL/AFL senior premiership. “As a kid, you just think how easy is it to win one. “It’s definitely difficult to be a Richmond supporter. You’re up one week, down the next. Lose games you shouldn’t lose. “You talk to supporters of other clubs and they say: ‘You poor bastard’.” He wonders if it’s the prominence of Punt Road Oval, the ‘vi-

Then we lost the next four. “But this year seems to be the year.” By bad planning, Mr Johanning won’t be able to make the G for the crucial match. He will be away on a footy trip, watching nervously with 41 Frankston Tiger Shark team-mates in a pub somewhere in Hobart. A Grand Final win would be the perfect present, one day before his birthday. Monday work could be doubtful, he says. His Collingwood-supporting wife Jenny is even riding the wave. “It’ll be a mixture of excitement and relief,” Mr Johanning said. “I’ll go nuts.”

Despite five decades of operation, visitors are still amazed at the 1880s-style village set-up as an old Australian colonial town in the picturesque Tynong North valley. Thanks to the recent partnership with Baptist Camping Victoria, the camp is still going strong with major renovations and a new indoor riding arena on its way. And as Mill Valley Ranch office manager Sue Ellis explained, the ranch has plenty of activities on offer for these school holidays. “School holiday programs, called roundups, cater for children and youth from age 10 to

17. Families can choose between the horse camp or the adventure camp, with both programs running from Sunday afternoon through to the Saturday morning each week of the school holidays,” Sue said. “We still have a few spaces available for the next school holidays, but jump on to our website and register quickly if you want to secure a spot for your child. We also run roundups right across the Christmas school holiday break. “And for the eight to 10-yearolds wanting to experience horse riding at the ranch, we have a pony express weekend in both October and November. “And don’t forget our open day on Saturday 4 November which will celebrate 50 years in the valley. Everyone is welcome!” Mill Valley Ranch is located at 525 Tynong North Road, Tynong North. For more information, phone 5942 8356 or visit www.mvr.org. au.

PROPERTY NEWS

LOCHAVEN BUILT UPON A TRUE LEGACY AS the land on which Lochaven,

Cranbourne West is built transitions from its farming heritage to a new residential community, Dacland is determined to honour the land's previous owners. Just one example of this being the recent incorporation of the McNab family tartan into the design of Lochaven’s streetscapes and parks. This week Dacland and Fleming’s Landscapes, progressed a commitment to honouring the McNab family legacy by planting beautiful Nyssa Sylvatica ‘Forum’ trees along Strathlea Drive. These budding deciduous trees are distinctly marked by their red autumn colour. In the early months of autumn, when the leaves begin to change their colour the red and green will create a unique tartan effect reminding Lochaven residents of the McNab family, who farmed the land for 100 years. Dacland general manager of design Jonathon Fetterplace believes that these trees will create a unique character 2

for the community. “At Dacland we celebrate the original land honouring the past as we build for the future. Across our communities, we listen to the history of the land and work with its natural features to create a legacy for future generations,” Jonathon said. “We wanted to preserve the stories that Laurie McNab and his sister Val shared about their family and growing up on the land, and have chosen to honour the McNab family’s legacy in our design. If you drive past Lochaven on a cool autumn day you will see colours of red and green lining the streets. This will create a unique character for the Lochaven community and have a very special meaning to the residents that live there, both in the past and future.” Lochaven has captured the McNab’s rich family history and stories throughout the community’s identity and branding, which features the colours of the McNab family tartan. These colours will now echo throughout the community design aided by the planting of the Nyssa Sylvatica ‘Forum’

trees that will help shade residents and create a remarkable neighbourhood that they can call home. The street names and landmarks at Lochaven have also captured the McNab’s rich family history to create a legacy for future generations. As a core pillar of all Dacland developments, sustainability and environmental protection has been at the forefront of planning and delivery at Lochaven. The UDIA EnviroDevelopment assessment scheme has reviewed and awarded the community six leaves for its initiatives to reduce energy, water and waste, and promote the preservation of natural ecosystems, communities and materials. “The planning and consideration underlining Lochaven’s sophisticated design helped it meet the UDIA rigorous EnviroDevelopment criteria, this is a community that has gone beyond the minimum compliance standards to further benefit the residents that live there,” Jonathon said. ● com.au

Women’s Health Week aims to put the health of the female population back into focus, given women all too often cite lack of time as a reason they can’t make their well-being a priority. Realising there was a need to put women first in this area, notfor-profit organisation Jean Hailes for Women’s Health decided to run a campaign to highlight the importance of taking a week each year to help women start making the positive changes in their lives that can last a lifetime. Now a permanent fixture in the Australian calendar, Women’s Health Week is held in the first week of September and attracts the support of organisations, high profile ambassadors, businesses, and community, sporting and media groups across the country. This year the event focused on heart health, mindfulness, bone health, physical activity, and sleep and fatigue. St John of God Berwick Hospital is a proud supporter of women’s health and offers services that assist women in achieving an optimal level of wellbeing. According to the 2017 Jean Hailes for Women’s Health survey, more than 60 per cent of the 10,377 female respondents aged 19-89 declared that they trusted health professionals more than any other source to provide reliable and accurate health information. And with more than 500 specialists available for consultation, St John of God Berwick Hospital is well equipped to offer a vast array

Wickers’ winning way By David Nagel Relentless and ruthless domination has been the signature move of the Berwick Football Club in 2017 and the hallmark of its 47-point victory over Narre Warren at Holm Park Reserve on Saturday. Grand final day provided rookie-coach Stewart Kemperman and his side with the perfect opportunity to rubber stamp an unbeaten season in the style it knows best - by sucking the life out of everything! And it didn’t waste the occasion, producing a performance that showcased its eternal legacy of suffocating every living morsel in its path. The Wickers squeezed the life out of the most potent attacking force in the competition, rendering it useless against the best defensive unit in the 13-year history of the league. Some have come close, but no team has bettered the Wickers average concession of 44 points per game this season. Narre Warren- well it had the better of the opening exchanges, looking sharp early, taking advantage of its red-hot form and the Wickers initial rustiness after a week off. Stewart Scanlon led the way in the pressure stakes for the Magpies, who hit the scoreboard first through Dean Kelly. But Berwick responded, and responded in the fashion of a great team, kicking the next eight goals and keeping the Magpies under wraps for close to an hour. Tim Gunn launched the assault with two long bombs, aided by the breeze, followed by Jarrod Kemperman and Bryce Rutherford, before Will Arthurson’s goal made the biggest statement of the first term. Not only did it kick the Wickers out to a 22-point lead, but space was found far too easily the squeezing was starting to take its toll. And Berwick’s second quarter, against a fading wind, was typical of its overall versatility this year. Just as they did against Cranbourne in the second semi-final, the Wickers turned their attention from an open style of play to a more circumspect method around the stoppages. Gun midfielders like Madi Andrews, Bryce Rutherford and James Magner absorbed the Magpies best shot, helped by the ruckwork of Kemperman and Andrew Morozoff, while defender Michael Johnson was starring in defence. In the absence of the injured Michael Riseley - Johnson’s value was immeasurable. Berwick kicked 2.3 to 0.3 in the second term to extend its margin to 35 points at half time and then began to tick down the clock to just the eighth premiership in the club’s history. Rutherford went bang, answered by two quick salvos from Hayden Stagg, before Gunn and Ash Smith had the engravers ready and waiting. Smith’s signature goal - clinical from long range at the 21-minute mark - broke the Magpies spirit, with goals to Arthurson and Harry Money finishing off the job. Gunn finished with four, and Money three for the winners, while skipper Andrews was a thoroughly deserving winner of the best-on-ground medal. The last quarter, well it was the longest of Narre Warren coach Heath Black’s career. “It was a great effort to get there, but that last quarter was the longest quarter of my life,” Black explained. “We tried to get a great team to stumble, we tried to apply external pressure, but their ability to absorb the pressure of going in unbeaten, to stick to their systems and defeat an opposition over 120 minutes, well it was very impressive to say the least.” Black said several things stood out for him about Berwick on Saturday.

We’ve won a premiership together ... and it feels fantastic.” SOUTH EAST FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE SCOREBOARD Mad-Monday celebrations were in full swing for Berwick premiership players at Edwin Flack Reserve. 173063 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS

Berwick gun James Magner produced a powerhouse performance for the Wickers against the Magpies on Saturday. “We felt like we had our fair share of possession in the first half, but their defensive net killed us, they played an open game and built a lead before turning it into a stoppage war, and with two minutes to go they were still screaming at each other in the back line,” he said. “A great defence, the ability to score, great structures and a willingness to work hard ... what more can you say.” As for Stewart Kemperman - well he thoroughly deserves the last word for the season. A premiership in his first year of coaching, the moulding of a team that averaged 99 points for the season and conceded just 44 - eerily similar to Saturday’s scoreboard. And only twice did they have 10 goals kicked against them this season - by unlikely sources in Doveton and Pakenham - while their two biggest challengers could kick no more than three goals against them in a quarter.

Statistically ... the Wickers are as good as any team of the last 13 years. “The defence is probably my little baby, but the credit goes to the players for buying into it,” Kemperman said. “They’ve worked hard and they’ve brought it to life. I view this group extremely highly, that’s my internal view, but I want everyone external to the group to view them that way as well. It was a really good opportunity today to show people how great they are.” The premiership coach said the loss of Riseley was disappointing, but sort of exemplified the importance of the team-first mentality that had been nurtured at the club. “It’s a real shame for Riser, because he’s such a star as you say, and he certainly would have added some real value to our team,” Kemperman said. “But throughout the year, we’ve had a real team ethos on everything we do, the way we defend, the way we attack, it’s all built on team. Our job as coaches has been to give clarity to as many players as we can because at any given time you could be called upon to play a role ... and that’s the boat Joey (Jo West) found himself in today.” And the final message from the coach to his players?

A titanic tussle to the end By David Nagel The curse of the unbeaten season has struck again with Narre Warren’s premiership hopes exploding in a puff of dust in a gripping reserves grand final contest against Berwick, 5.5(35) to 4.3(27), on Saturday. But spare a thought for the Magpies ... because this was no ordinary season. Sure they had defeated the Wickers on three occasions, but wins by three, three and one point - in very low scoring contests - gave the impression that this one would go all the way down to the wire. Neither team had scored more than 40 points against the other heading into the big dance! But it’s a trend that looked like changing after the Wickers gatecrashed the Magpies’ party in the early exchanges. Nick Hillard, who would go on to claim the best-on-ground medal, snuck through the Wickers first, followed by another to Jesse Cirilus, and when crafty goal-sneak Hayden McLardy kicked a third the Wickers were out to a three-goal lead after nine minutes of play. That opening burst - well it made all the difference in the end. The Magpies fought back as expected - overcoming a serious knee injury to key midfielder Michael McGill - to kick the next four goals and take a seven-point lead into half time. Liam Myatt kicked two, and Dean Scanlon another, but it was the celebrations after Rhys Dempster’s quality finish that gave the impression the Magpies were on top. Berwick forward Jordy Andrews

The Magpies had the breeze and looked good to take home the cup. But Berwick refused to buckle, and an opportunistic goal to Trent Thomas gave them an eight-point lead that they would never surrender. Coach Leigh Noonan was understandably proud of

his players after the game. “I just feel like a really proud dad at the moment, it’s an unbelievable feeling,” Noonan said shortly after the siren. “Narre has been the best team all year, but you only have to beat them once and that’s what we did today. They’re a great team, and they brought the best out of us and I couldn’t be happier right now.

“We fought it out like dogs right to the very end and it all started two weeks ago, where we never gave up against them in the second semi and that’s all I could have asked for. I couldn’t be prouder of what the boys dished up today.” Hillard was a sensational performer for the Wickers, while Nick Macente and Trent Van Hout were warriors in

defence and Jake McLardy put his biggame experience to good use. Players like Mitch Tonna, Andy Ray, Jack Wheeler and Chris Collins will be bitterly disappointed in defeat, but can be content that they gave their all for the Magpies until the bitter end. And the final score at the end of the season - Berwick 121 v Narre Warren 120!

A skipper beyond compare

I put a lot of my

heart and soul into the club so it is nice to actually get some reward. These are the guys I grew up playing footy with and that makes it feel even better.” Coach Stewart Kemperman said Andrews was thoroughly deserving of his very-high standing at the club, singling him out first as a key player on the weekend. “Let’s start with the skipper; in my opinion one of the greatest this club has ever seen, if not the greatest player this club has ever seen ... he was enormous,” Kemperman said. Let’s just leave it at that!

Relief and immense satisfaction were etched on the face of Berwick’s champion midfielder Madi Andrews after the inspirational skipper led his side to the most dominant season in the club’s history on Saturday. And Madi’s season - well it wasn’t that far behind! In fact Andrews created his own slice of history, becoming the only player in the 13-year existence of the Casey Cardinia-South East Football Netball League to back up a league best-and-fairest award with a best-on-ground display in the 47-point grand final victory over Narre Warren. The 26-year-old’s impact on Berwick is profound. His two Norm Walker Medals for best player in the league have both co-incided with premiership seasons for his club you don’t get much bigger than that. But, as usual, the affable skipper was far more excited about talking his team up than taking individual plaudits. “Seriously, it doesn’t compare, this is what I play footy for and always have,” Andrews said from the heaving middle of Holm Park Reserve. “It feels great, you work hard for it and it’s been such a good year for the club and it’s really nice to cap it off with a premiership. Our work ethic just continues to grow and that’s something we pride ourselves on and it is nice to get the ultimate reward. We were just relentless, and that was our

Tooradin-Dalmore’s transformation from the ugly duckling to the soaring Seagull of the South East Football Netball League is complete after a commanding 39-32 triumph over Narre Warren in Saturday’s grand final at Holm Park Reserve. The Seagulls secured their first premiership in 11 years, taking control of the contest in the first half before keeping the Magpies at bay after half time. The scale of the achievement is quite remarkable really - especially if we wind the clock back just two years to the day. The Magpies won the first of their back-to-back premierships in 2015, while the Seagulls were licking their wounds after a winless season. Just two years later and how fortunes have changed. Coach Kelly Andrews signed on with the Seagulls and headed into the unknown, not fully aware of the challenge that confronted her in 2016. “I went there not knowing what to expect, being winless, was I going to teach girls how to catch, but I was pleasantly surprised when I got there,” a thrilled Andrews said after the big win over the Magpies. “There was a lot of skill and talent at the club that needed to be nurtured into a team, and that’s all I’ve done.” Four players from that winless season enjoyed premiership success on Saturday, with Ebony Dolan, Alexandra Duff, Stacey Sawyer and club-

stalwart Shona Wells all part of the startling transformation. Andrews brought in some big guns, with Alex and Jess Maher, Jess Cox, Sara Duncan, Emma Iacovou and Bec Kinna all heading to the nest, but it was the coaching of the locals that most appealed to her. “That was big for me, I didn’t want to come in and replace the whole team, I wanted to coach and not just bring in the big guns,” she said. “And I was very picky about the players we brought over, about the personalities and retaining the club culture. It’s a bit of a sisterhood now; we’re really honest with each other, no bullshit, which is great. The players are talented but you don’t win premierships without combining as a team. “I’m rapt for them, all the hard work the girls have put in really showed out today. The girls put in extra work, and when they train they train at 100 per cent which can result in injuries, like happened to Sara (Duncan). “But I’m so glad she got through the game ... she was extremely helpful today.” Andrews was particularly happy for Wells the 300-gamer playing in her first A Grade premiership after missing 2006 for a friend’s wedding. Andrews said her team-mates owed her something after letting her down in her milestone match against Doveton in round 16. “We absolutely stuffed up Shona’s 300th,” Andrews admitted. “Doveton had it all over us and it was one of those selfish games where we probably tried a

little too hard. This makes up for it I think, Shona she said to me before that nobody remembers 300 games anyway ... just premierships.” Andrews said there were no secrets to Saturday’s win, just good old fashioned team work. “Beating your opponent one-on-one, doing the hard stuff, getting to where your defender doesn’t want you to be, and if we turn it over, get three feet hands over the ball, and help the person behind you take a ripper intercept,” Andrews said, before explaining the sacrifice required to be a champion team. “That’s what is sometimes hard to teach people, to do the unselfish work that you don’t get the glory for,” she said. “But I notice it and I’ll pat you on the back for it because the little things are so important. In the games we lost, we didn’t do those things well.” Andrews said defeating a champion team like the Magpies - who were going for three premierships on the trot - made the victory all the more sweeter. “They’re experienced finals campaigners and always very tough to beat, and there was little bit more incentive to play well against a side that has been there and done it before,” she said. “We knew if we played our best we could win it, but it’s been a bit confusing with Narre Warren this year. We won, then lost easy, and then beat them pretty comfortably so we knew we had to play our best to get across the line.” Tooradin Goal Attack Jess Cox won the SEFNL medal for best on court.

When Eagles dared to dream and do By David Nagel Beaconsfield has claimed its first under-19 premiership since 2010 after the Eagles survived a dour and desperate fight for the title against Narre Warren, 4.10(34) to 4.4(28), on Saturday. The Eagles’ six-point victory was built on the back of a dominant - but wasteful - second term, kicking 2.6 to 0.0 with the aid of a breeze blowing towards the netball court end of the ground. Two goals in two minutes to Rhys Nelson and Devon Smith, midway through the second term, gave the Eagles a 17-point lead at half-time. The Magpies, who de-

feated the Eagles by 37 points in the second semi-final, bounced back as expected, cutting the margin to nine at the final break. A late goal to Dylan Webber gave them hope, but the harder-at-it Eagles weathered the storm to claim a well-deserved victory. “Probably since they knocked us off two weeks ago the focus has been to attack the footy a bit harder, we were second to the ball and we needed to rectify that situation,” said proud Beaconsfield coach Luke Young. “We’ve built a lot of trust in this group, to back our team style, and back our team-mates and there’s

a huge expectation on every team member. The boys were just enormous, they’re a great group of young men and they’re set to take this club a long way.” Young was full of praise for beston-ground medal winner Jackson Drake. “Drakey has been pretty good for us over the last six weeks,” Young said. “We put it on him, because he was struggling to hold his place in the side, but we threw him into the ruck and he’s been enormous ever since then.” Young then wanted to thank a few people for their support that

helped win this year’s premiership. “Yeah, it has paid off in the end; my wife has been great, my two kids, the footy club, the president Troy Robinson, Darren Hamilton in Footy Ops, Dave Entwistle for pumping up the kids each week, and it’s just been a great team effort both on and off the field.” Drake was joined by Riley Verbi, Robbie McMillan and co-captains Scott Triffitt and Dan Coinu as best players for the Eagles, while Mitchell Smith did a great job in defence. Patrick Andrews, Lachie Baker and Jake Boccari were solid contributors for the Magpies, who were chasing their first flag since 2014.

Stingrays bundled out By Nick Creely TAC CUP REVIEW - PRELIMINARY FINAL The Dandenong Stingrays battled hard but were ultimately outclassed by a hardened Geelong Falcons outfit in Sunday’s preliminary final at Simonds Stadium. After an even first quarter, the ‘Rays got the jump in the second quarter to take a 12-point half-time lead, but ultimately the likes of Cassidy Parish, James Worpel and Cooper Stephens got on top in the middle, with the Falcons running away with a 10-goal to two last half. Although it ends the season prematurely for the ‘Rays, who finished third at the end of the home-andaway season, coach Craig Black said his side never stopped trying against a class outfit who will go in as favourites in the decider at Etihad Stadium on Sunday. “The initial reaction was disappointment when you make it so far - we gave it every opportunity and we were up by two goals at half time and had the first three scoring shots of the third quarter but just couldn’t capitalise,” he said. “All of a sudden we were 21-points at three quarter time, and we were just coming from a bit too far back against a really good side. “When you make it to the top four, you play some really quality

recruiters on the biggest week on the footballing calender in Victoria. “We’ve got the Futures Game next Friday before the grand final, so we have Bailey Williams, Bailey Schimdt, Riley Bowman, Will Hamill and Mitch Riordan all playing which is great for us, and then on grand final day we have the 18-year-olds in Aiden Bonar, Hunter Clark, Oscar Clavarino and Luke Davies playing on the ‘G, so it’s a great representation of our region,” Black said.

TAC CUP Bailey Williams is one of several first year Stingrays to develop Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS rapidly in 2017. 171054 opponents who aren’t just going to roll over - we had some opportunities but didn’t take them.” It’s been another highly successful campaign for the club out of Shepley Oval, with several young starts emerging out of the season. “The first final, we had ten 17-year-olds playing, and on Sunday we had nine playing - to make it so far, and to give some 17-year-olds an early start in their development is a positive and hopefully it gives them an advantage heading into next year,” Black said.

“We’re really proud as a club of our program; we played a couple of finals in a really tough competition and got to develop our boys so we look at it as a success for sure. “That’s what our program is all about for these young men, giving them an opportunity at TAC Cup and try and develop them to go as far as they can - our coaches and parents put in a lot of time and effort so it’d be great to be given a bit of a reward (on draft night).” Several Stingrays will feature on AFL Grand Final week, looking to make their names in front of AFL

Eagles are true champions in full flight By Nick Creely Only a champion team can lift itself off the canvas when the game looks buried, and find the will to win. That’s exactly what the Doveton Eagles did on Saturday in what was a gripping grand final clash with Endeavour Hills at Jack Barker Oval in Cheltenham. In a game of spits and spurts of momentum for each side, the Eagles found the winner late with a clutch set-shot from the 50-metre arc by Russell Robertson, 13.6(84) to 13.10(88). It took just 30 seconds for the scoring to begin on Saturday, with Nick Gay running into an open goal to give the Falcons the dream start. The Falcons - in their first senior grand final ever - settled into the contest quicker, and with the likes of Daniel Batson and Byron Hoe playing big roles in the first, managed to hold a slender nine-point quarter time lead. A rev up by Eagles coach Simon Caldwell provided the catalyst for a quick response, with the underdogs producing a sensational second quarter, kicking six of the next seven goals to all of a sudden race out to a 22-point half time lead. Eventual best-afield Michael Callinan was causing plenty of headaches through the midfield, often bursting out of a stoppage unopposed to give forwards Russell Robertson and Adam Read silver service. A move to the midfield by Batson - and a tougher, more competitive showing in the middle - saw the Falcons immediately regain the momentum after the major break. After three brain fades that resulted in 50 metre penalties, the Falcons made the Eagles pay for ill-discipline, with goals to Joel Marie, Chris Webber and the brilliant Batson pegging the margin back to five-points.

Saturday's Southern Football League Division 3 grand final saw two tough midfields battle it out for Picture: NICK CREELY the title. 173008 Only moments after Batson sunk his set-shot, Marie - who was helping turn the game on its head - found space to kick a goal to put the Falcons in front. That momentum continued through to the early stages of the final term, with Nathan Strom and Hoe kicking goals to bring the margin all the way out to a game high 28-point lead. A response was needed from the Eagles - and a response they got. All of a sudden - with nothing left to lose - the Eagles started pulling the trigger, with skipper Corrie Wilson in particular starting to lift in the middle and hit his targets. An outstanding bit of play by Jarrod O’Neill saw the margin cut back to a gettable 14-points only nine-

minutes into play, before Robertson eventually stole victory with only two minutes left with a clutch shot that sent the crowd into raptures. Even though Robertson was well held for the most part by Falcons defender Ben Moriaty in an absorbing one-on-one battle, the ex-AFL man’s class shone through. Coach Simon Caldwell was delighted with the victory. “At three quarter time, we sort of just put what I thought was our best midfield in there, and we put some fresh blokes in there to give them a run, and we just stuck fat,” he said. Caldwell was full of praise for his players, in particular Robertson, who shook off a tough day to kick the goal that got them in front with just minutes to play.

“Robbo’s had a few down games this year - in one match he kicked 6.13, but when he got the opportunity he just took it - that’s why he played at the highest level,” Caldwell explained. “When the game needed to be won, he just slotted it from 50 out, and it got us over the line I guess.” Meanwhile, in Division 2 action, Keysborough was knocked out of the premiership race after a surprising 20-point preliminary final loss to Murrumbeena on Saturday at Meade Reserve, 3.11(29) to 5.19(49). After leading by nine-points at three quarter time, the Burra scored just a single point against a harsh breeze to be overrun.

Demons in league of their own By Nick Creely VICTORIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE REVIEW - DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE GRAND FINAL Casey will go down in history as the last ever team to win a premiership in the VFL’s Development League after a hard-fought 12-point victory over Williamstown. With the league ending at the end of the season after almost 100-years of operation, the two sides battled it out for grand final glory in front of a packed crowd at Fortburn Stadium on Saturday. The Seagulls kicked with the wind in the first quarter, and used it wisely to kick ahead to a 16-point quarter time lead despite the Dees kicking a wayward 2.6. Mykelti Lefau got the Demons off to the perfect second quarter start to kick his first goal of the match, and the minor premiers found a spark, kicking three more goals and holding the opposition goalless to take the lead at half time. The game tightened up dramatically in the third quarter, with goals becoming scarce, and the game remained in the balance ahead of an epic final quarter. Daniel Johnston levelled the scores early in the last quarter with a major from outside the 50 metre arc, and the game remained neck-and-neck for the next 20 minutes as both sides traded goals. With the Demons down by a point at the 21-minute mark, James Freeman stood up with a clever snap goal to put them in front, before Lefau kicked the sealer with just seconds to play to win the match. Yilber Zijai (two goals) was awarded the Fred Hill Memorial Medal as best-afield in a classy display on a half forward, while Sean Dwyer (30 disposals), Mitch Cox (three goals) and Perry Lewis-Smith were all among the best for the Dees through the midfield. Saturday’s premiership victory was the first flag that Casey have won since changing its name from Springvale in 2006, and it’s first VFL Reserve’s premiership since 1983.

Subaru races into the lead By Derek Ogden, Marque Motoring It appears Subaru has backed a winner with the new XV, with sales of the small sports utility vehicle up 139.0 per cent for August, pushing the maker to becoming the fastest growing top 10 brand in the automotive industry, according to official VFACTS figures. Subaru took a gamble with the XV, stepping out of the square with its sharper looks over the soft-skinned majority of the segment and augmenting this with technology designed to take on conditions other soft-roaders could only dream about tackling. The second-generation XV comes in four variants - 2.0i, 2.0i-L, 2.0iPremium and 2.0i-S - with a reduced entry-level price of $27,990, plus onroad costs, and is the second Subaru after the new Impreza to make use of the company’s acclaimed Global Platform, designed to provide high rigidity, and strength, together with less weight. Rolling resistance is reduced with the help of specially developed tyres. On the outside the XV uses a design theme based on sharp edges and bold curves producing a solid profile and no soft styling. A strong horizontal bar across the radiator grille is a reminder of a horizontally opposed engine conrod and Subaru’s Boxer heritage, while a sharp windscreen angle, together with a large rear spoiler and bumper, aids aerodynamics. The 2.0i-Premium and lower grades run on 17-inch alloy wheels. The new Subaru Global Platform has given more interior width and height to the XV, with added attention to detail from switches and interactive

displays, and use of quality materials and superior finish. Displays vary from model to model, with a 6.3-inch colour multi-function display across the range at the top of the central dashboard presenting useful and entertainment information such as audio, air-con, fuel efficiency, favourites and settings. The lower part of the screen provides visuals of Subaru’s advanced safety functions, including EyeSight on 2.0i-Premium, auto lights and vision assist. An audio screen shows the audio selection playing, with the wide screen enabling a large amount of text to be displayed, while tracks or radio channels can be chosen by using the steering wheel switch, at the same time viewing the multi-function display screen directly in front of the driver. Smartphones with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, can be connected via an 8-inch screen positioned high on the dash to minimise shifting of the driver’s eyes from the road. Just by speaking commands to Siri or Google Now, users can text also without taking their eyes off the road. Music apps such as Spotify, iHeartRadio and Tuneln can be enjoyed through a sound system incorporating speakers in the rear doors, woofers in the front doors and tweeters in the instrument panel. Power comes from a new 2-litre four-cylinder direct injection naturally aspirated Boxer engine producing 115 kW of power at 6000rpm and 196 Nm of torque at 4000 revs and is mated with a new lightweight Lineartronic continuously variable transmission with a wider gear range than previously.

Sharp looks set the Subaru XV apart from rivals in the small SUV segment EyeSight, in conjunction with adaptive cruise control acts as a second pair of eyes for the driver, keeping a lookout for any vehicle ahead and adapting the speed to match the distance. As with all Subarus, the XV has earned the top five-star safety rating from the Australasian New Car Assessment Program, while top-strength structural design will ensure the car is capable of the highest ratings until at least 2025. The new XV was introduced to the media earlier this year in the Snowy Mountains and on a drive to the NSW Coast. Outside it was brass monkey weather with temperatures in minus singlefigures Celsius. Inside, thanks to cabin highly efficient climate control, the cabin was cosy without being claustro-

phobic. Out on the bitumen, active torque vectoring had the XV turning better than before with improved response and control, while the all-new lane keeping assist and reverse automatic braking when parking underlined the car’s five-star safety rating. Noise and vibration were kept to a minimum, while the four-cylinder engine was refined in its power delivery, roaring only when pressed hard. The CVT, lighter than previously, again worked smoothly and without

fuss across a wider range of ratios, offering the chance for the driver to become more involved with a sevenspeed manual mode. On route there was a stop-off in a quarry where X-Mode and hill descent control were given an extensive workout on treacherous inclines without the vehicle flinching. Under normal driving conditions Subaru constant all-wheel drive makes sure power is directed to the wheels with most grip, while ground clearance of 220 mm and X-Mode makes it easier for drivers to safely navigate bad roads, slippery surfaces and steep inclines at the single press of a button. This co-ordinates the engine control unit, traction control and vehicle dynamics control to improve drivability and wheel grip. VDC also uses hill descent control to slow the vehicle on steep inclines and leave the driver to concentrate solely on steering. Fuel consumption is claimed by the maker to be seven litres per 100 kilometres on the combined urban / highway cycle with carbon dioxide emissions put at 159g per kilometre for a Euro 6 rating. Minimum fuel requirement is 90 RON. The test vehicle topped 12 litres per 100 kilometres in town and half that in motorway cruising Sales figures tell the story, with more and more buyers taking advantage of the XV’s unique styling and high level of standard equipment, especially in the Premium model, which is surprisingly well priced.
