The editor’s desk Last weekend I had the pleasure of catching up with one of the descendants of previous owners of Glengallan Homestead, the Marshall family. There’s been a bit of controversy around Glengallan of late, namely to do with the ultimately unsuccessful bid to return the original gates from Warwick’s Leslie Park. Be that as it may, the homestead last weekend celebrated its 150th anniversary and once again we are reminded as a community of the significant work done by many people to restore this historic icon of the Darling Downs, which not so long ago was a ruin. I often make the observation that a lot of Warwick people tend to take our local history for granted. Glengallan Homestead is a symbol of our past, present and future as one of the prime agricultural regions in Australia - and how Warwick as a community led the way in the development of pastoralism on the Darling Downs.

THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT… SECRETS OF SALEYARDS Minutes of a meeting of the Southern Downs Regional Council’s Saleyards Advisory Committee held on Thursday 7 September were due to be presented to this week’s council meeting in Stanthorpe in a confidential session. The 7 September meeting of the advisory committee is understood to have discussed Expressions of Interest (EOIs) received by the council for the potential leasing out of the Warwick Saleyards to a private operator. A separate confidential item on this week’s council meeting agenda was entitled 'Expressions of Interest - Lease of Council premises’, but it is unclear if this referred to the saleyards or to other council property. Minutes of a Saleyards Advisory Committee meeting held on Friday 4 August, which were publicly released, note that council chief executive officer David Keenan advised the committee members it was “up to the committee to advise council what to do with regards to the EOI”. The possible leasing out of the Warwick Saleyards to a private operator has been a hot topic in recent months, with many connected with the rural sector adamant the saleyards make a profit and should continue to be directly managed by the council. The saleyards returned a $264,998 profit in the 2016/17 financial year.

Warwick Saleyards. This week’s council meeting will also formally note the reception of a petition from the community calling for the saleyards to continue to be directly managed by the council. The council’s September general meeting was held yesterday, Wednesday 20 September at the Stanthorpe Chambers. Other items scheduled to have been discussed in a closed session yesterday included the June and July reports on the Warwick Indoor Recreation and Acquatic Centre (WIRAC), and the purchase by the council of two “underground service locators". A Crime and Corruption Commission probe into Ipswich City Council has resulted in a current board member of Warwick Credit Union and a former senior Warwick Shire Council manager being charged with corruption. Jim Lindsay - who has been stood aside from his role as chief executive officer of Ipswich City Council - was arrested by CCC investigators last Thursday 14 September and charged with one count of official corruption. Mr Lindsay was the assistant general manager of Warwick Credit Union from June 2003 to December 2006, prior to which he was director of Finance and Corporate Services with the former Warwick Shire Council from 1995. The Warwick Credit Union website lists Mr Lindsay as a board member and describes him as a “skilled accountant with more than 25 years in the finance sector, (holding) a Bachelor of Business and a Masters of Business Administration”. Mr Lindsay is due to appear in

Jim Lindsay. the Brisbane Magistrates' Court on Wednesday 11 October. The CCC investigation into Ipswich City Council has so far also resulted in extortion and other charges being brought against former Ipswich mayor Paul Pisasale and a misconduct charge against Ipswich City Council’s chief operating officer of works, parks and recreation Paul Mausley. Former Southern Downs Regional Council chief executive officer Andrew Roach is Ipswich City Council’s current chief financial officer. ● Jeremy Sollars

Megan and Alun Stevens, pictured on the Glengallan verandah, beneath the 'lockstone' marking commencement of the homestead's construction by John Deuchar in 1867.

Glengallan Homestead celebrated its 150th anniversary last weekend, with a gala dinner on Saturday night attended by nearly 200, including descendants of previous owners. Among them was Megan Stevens of Melbourne, the great-great-granddaughter of Charles Henry Marshall and his wife Charlotte Augusta Dring-Drake, who owned the Glengallan property prior to the construction of the homestead by John Deuchar. Marshall went into partnership with Deuchar in the mid-1850s, with the pair having established Glengallan’s Merino flock and Shorthorn cattle stud in the 1850s. Marshall retained a financial interest in Glengallan after retiring from the partnership and returning to England in the mid-1860s, later returning to Australia with Charlotte in 1870 due to Deuchar’s financial difficulties. Megan - whose grandmother Charlotte Louisa Marshall was born on Glengallan - made the trip to Warwick with husband Alun for the dinner on Saturday night and to further the couple’s research on their local family connections. The couple are originally from South Africa and came to Australia in 1981, and first visited Glengallan Homestead in 1988 - in the pre-restoration days - after moving to their then-home of Brisbane. While Megan’s own family connection is in the pre-homestead era, she still remains impressed by its

COVER STORY Martin Shepherd of the Rural Fire Service is imploring locals to appreciate the serious bushfire risk at the present time. Martin is pictured on the cover with the local Rural Fire Service ‘Volunteer Community Education’ trailer, which visits events around the region to present bushfire preparedness information to residents.

BONE DRY - READY

ake no mistake - bushfire season is here, and the time to prepare is now. Fuel loads on the ground right now across the Southern Downs and Granite Belt coming out of winter are the biggest they’ve been in recent years, largely thanks to rainfall from Cyclone Debbie back in late March and early April. The ‘Debbie rain’ spurred on significant vegetation growth across our region and combined with an extremely

dry winter and big frosts has meant all that previously green growth is now bone-dry - and ready to burn. Rural fire crews are quietly praying for rain in the coming weeks, but there is no room for complacency, particularly on the part of residents of rural areas and on town fringes near bushland. The Warwick and Stanthorpe regions are currently on a ‘Very High’ fire danger - the third highest designation on the bushfire risk scale, below ‘Extreme’ and ‘Catastrophic’. Rural fire crews themselves are on ‘Wildfire Alert Level 2’, which means any bushfires must be attended by a minimum of two crews.

There isn’t currently a total fire ban in place around here, but rural fire authorities will not be issuing any new burn permits anytime soon and some previously current ones were cancelled in the first couple of weeks of September. The Rural Fire Service’s Martin Shepherd - our Volunteer Community Education Area co-ordinator - cannot stress enough the importance of having a ‘Bushfire Survival Plan’ up to date and ready to execute should the need arise. Martin told the Free Times this week a lot of people still don’t fully understand how quickly a bushfire can move, and how rapidly conditions can change when a fire is underway.

Understand bushfire warning levels and what they mean for you.

And he’s urging people to understand how potentially serious the current conditions are. “The difference between this year and the last couple of years is the combination of high winds and high fuel loads and heavy frosts over winter,” Martin said. “In the past few years, we’ve also been saved by rainfall at the right time, but the dry conditions are particularly severe at the present time. “Even some of the permitted and controlled burns lately have been getting away - that’s an indication of how serious the risk and the situation is. “You need to have a Bushfire Survival Plan if you live in a rural area, and you need to review it and practice it. “There’s the obvious things like keeping your gutters clear, mowing the grass and removing as much flammable vegetation as possible. “And you need to be aware if you’re downwind of a fire of the risk of flying embers. “It can all happen much more quickly than a lot of people realise.” Rural fire crews are also warning of the dangers of ‘hot work’ people may be doing around home - such as welding and grinding - and are encouraging rural people to limit their use right now. “We do get a lot of fires which start from ‘hot work’ if you really do need to use equipment like welders and grinders at the moment you need to at least have a bucket of water handy, or preferably a fire extinguisher,” Martin said. “But what we really need people in rural areas to understand is the need to have a supply of water available to fight a fire or to supply a fire truck. “We also want to emphasise how critical it is to call triple-zero in the event of a fire, not your local brigade. “This is a response time issue.”

STAY OR GO - IT’S YOUR CALL Martin Shepherd says while authorities can act to compulsorily evacuate residents in an extreme bushfire scenario, generally the decision to stay at home or leave is an individual one. “Stay and defend or leave early - it’s really up to the resident,” he said. “All we can do is give out as much information as we can, you need to take all the relevant factors into consideration when deciding to either defend your property or leave. “But what we do want people to do is monitor the conditions and the fire activity - if everybody is looking out, then we are better able to deal with spot fires.” As the Free Times went to print this week, around 30 bushfires were burning across Queensland, with the nearest to our own region being across the range at Maroon, west of Rathdowney. The Southern Downs Regional Council says it has recently completed the construction and maintenance of fire trails in the region. A spokeswoman said a new fire trail has been constructed in the Rosehill-Houghton Heights area just outside Warwick and “maintenance and construction” has been carried out on the following fire trails: · Rathmells Road to Inverramsey Road, Goomburra; · Mauchs Road to Charleys Gully Road, Freestone and · McMasters Road to Spicers Peak Lodge, Upper Freestone, Maryvale area. “Council has not undertaken any controlled burn offs so far this season,” the spokeswoman said. Become a volunteer rural firefighter – for details call Martin Shepherd on 0413 037 965. ●

WHAT TO DO RIGHT NOW IF YOU LIVE IN A BUSHFIRE PRONE AREA ... · Visit www.ruralfire.qld.gov.au and find out how to prepare a Bushfire Survival Plan · Ensure you have sufficient access for a fire truck onto your property - at least 4m x 4m · Ensure you have a supply of water available to fight a fire or supply a fire truck · Clean out gutters, mow grass and remove as much flammable vegetation and material from around your home as you can · Be aware of the warnings and what they mean and that flying embers can be much closer to your property than you might think · Call triple-zero in the event of a fire - not your local rural brigade

WHAT ARE THE WARNINGS? 1. NOTIFICATION - information about basic firefighting operations in the area 2. ADVICE - Monitor conditions and review your Bushfire Survival Plan 3. WATCH AND ACT - Conditions are changing. Start taking action and follow your Bushfire Survival Plan 4. EMERGENCY WARNING - You are in DANGER. Action your Bushfire Survival Plan NOW.

TWO RULES ON PESTS The Southern Downs Regional Council’s new Invasive Pest Control Scheme (IPCS) continues to cause angst among owners of rural property, with many questioning how the scheme aligns with pest control in neighbouring National Parks and State Forests - along with council’s own land. Under the IPCS owners of predominantly rural land will be required to annually demonstrate their control measures for declared pest animals and weeds, and face a ‘supplementary’ rates notice if found to be noncompliant. The council has justified the scheme on the basis of the need for region-wide and equitable pest control requirements for private landowners, but many have labelled the scheme a “cash grab”, saying the council lacks the staff and resources to physically inspect all rural properties for compliance. A council spokeswoman told the Free Times this week around 3700 ‘Control Works’ forms had been submitted by landowners as required, with about 10 per cent of these landowners having so far requested a physical inspection of their properties by council staff. But allegations of double standards have been raised, with community members pointing out noxious weeds on council’s own landholdings and roadworks practices which could potentially encourage pests such as rabbits.

Of equal concern is private land sharing boundaries with non-council government lands such as National Parks, with landholders questioning the effectiveness of federal and state government pest control measures, particularly in remote and often inaccessible locations. The council this month wrote to federal and state agencies asking them to implement controls equivalent to those the council requires from private landowners. The agencies included Sunwater, Queensland Rail, the State Departments of Environment and Heritage Protection, National Parks, Sport and Racing and Natural Resources and Mines, and the Federal Department of Defence, saying it was “vital to the success of the (IPCS) that your department is actively involved as contributors to the ideals of invasive pest control”. Private local landowners whose properties adjoin National Parks and the like are understood to be particularly sceptical about the IPCS, with some vowing to not lift a finger to comply if their state and federal neighbours’ measures are below-par. Concern about a lack of proper pest controls in National Parks and similar reserves has risen in recent years, with such lands seen by many as a safe haven for pest animals such as wild dogs, and an originating source of many pest plant species. One landowner with holdings adjoining National Parks land in the

This week’s general council meeting in Stanthorpe on Wednesday formally noted a community petition rejecting the scheme as an “unreasonable economic burden on landholders”. Some have suggested the council implement the scheme in this, its first year, as a trial with no financial penalties, but the council has to date shown no sign of backing down. The Free Times sought comment from State Environment Minister Steven Miles on the government’s support or otherwise for the IPCS. Instead we received a response attributed to a spokesman for Queenland Parks and Wildlife which said the government “recognises the need for pest control measures and works closely with landholders, lessees, permit holders and local governments to deliver a co-ordinated and integrated

We are exploring opportunities for collaborative projects with council, targeting invasive weeds. “QPWS’s pest control activities include the control of pest plants with herbicide and fire, as well as baiting, trapping and shooting pest animals.” ●

‘THE COTTONVALE STOREKEEPER’ TALE Warwick’s DEBORAH WHEELER contributed these reminisces of her late father, George Francis James ‘Frank’ Wheeler, who passed away on Friday 8 September ... fondly remembered as ‘The Cottonvale Storekeeper’ ... On 21 April 1974, Frank and Joyce Wheeler together with their two youngest children, moved to Cottonvale. They had purchased the Cottonvale Store which was a small mixed business with food, papers and petrol. They were to spend five very productive years in the district. As Kathy was only 10 months old at that time, they were very fortunate to employ Glady Austin. Austin, as she was lovingly called, would come and look after Kathy in the mornings, clean the house and help Joyce get the lunch orders ready for the children at the Cottonvale School. Once the lunches were packed up and ready to go, Frank would deliver them to the school at lunch time. Their daughter, Deborah, presented them with their first granddaughter, Belinda in December 1974. Frank would often be seen with Kathy and Belinda following him around the store. His special treat for them was a chocolate frog each. Needless to say, there was no profit in chocolate frogs. Over the five-year period that they were at the shop, Frank took it from a small country store to a significant business

Joyce holding Belinda and Frank holding Kathy. in the district. At that time, the locals in the district all supported their own local stores, however the reputation of the Cottonvale Store became such that Frank and Joyce served customers from Dalveen, Thulimbah, The Summit, Amiens, Pozieres, Applethorpe, Stanthorpe and surrounds. Frank was always thinking of new ways to supply his customers with products they used, saving them from having to go to Stanthorpe, Warwick or Toowoomba to do their shopping. When they first took over the store, they would buy all of their supplies from the travelling sales vans that would take orders and supply them with products on

the spot. As the store was only small, they could only purchase enough stock to fill the shelves. In order to achieve his goal, Frank undertook a number of new extensions to the store, firstly by adding a store room on the Warwick side of the building. Later he went on to more than double the size of the building by adding a further extension at the back of the original store. This then resulted in Frank buying the vanguard so that he could travel to Brisbane to select a wider range of products. Frank and Joyce were very aware that they needed to cater more fully for the large Italian population that surrounded their store, so Frank included a visit to

ARTS SCENE WARWICK SHIRE WOODCRAFTERS INC KEEP THEIR SKILLS ALIVE The early careers of members John Madsen (president), Nev Yarrow (treasurer) and Ron Bryant, photographer and keeper of the ‘Woodies’ history took them in a very different direction as young men, but they all maintained a passion for woodwork. It was this love of all things wood that has led them to become a vital part of the ongoing success of the now Warwick Shire Woodcrafters Inc, currently housed in the ex-Rosenthal Shire Workshop. Nev Yarrow said it had been 25 years since the group started meeting in garages and sheds to share their skills. Nev Yarrow and Ken Petersen were founding members of the Allora Woodcrafters, set up in 1992 and continue to be active members of the Warwick Shire Woodcrafters today. Relocation of the woodcrafters is a possibly very soon with a successful council

funding application pending. “Thanks to the SDRC we have been very fortunate to have the use of the old Rosenthal shed and we are looking forward to the future in another location with the SDRC’s support,” John Madsen said. “We have been here for 17 years and always knew it was not permanent.” Ron Bryant says the woodcrafters are “a great group and have contributed much to the community over the years”. “You can see our hand-crafted seats in the library, town hall and council chambers.” An old photo was all they had to go by when asked by Glengallan Homestead to make replica furniture for one of their stately rooms. The woodcrafters have conducted many workshops in-house, visited primary schools to share their skills, demonstrated at craft fairs and participated in downtown expos during their 25 years as a group.

Angelo’s Pasta factory at New Farm into his fortnightly run to Brisbane. He would purchase fresh and frozen pasta products here and he also purchased large tins of olive oil and many other specialty items for his customers. These trips to Brisbane every fortnight meant long hard days of work, necessitating him to be up and ready to leave at 4am and he would not arrive back home until around 8pm at night. Truckies were also identified as also being a valuable part of the store’s clientele. Frank purchased one of the new microwave ovens which had not long been on the market, and proceeded to sell hot cups of tea and coffee, pies and sausage rolls. He also had the reputation of making the most delicious, icy-cold milk shakes in the district. Frank was a great supporter of other local businesses. Pat Brady would deliver his fresh baked bread and delicious pies to the store every morning. Frank strongly encouraged Steve and Vera Jakupec with their apple juice factory and was one of the first businesses to stock their Gladhill Apple Juice. Prior to this, all fruit juice needed to be refrigerated. Many years after leaving the district, he continued to show interest in what happened in the local area. When asked what he wanted to be remembered as, Frank would say, “The Storekeeper”. ●

Forget-me-not, morning glory and asters are all listed as your flower for this month and the only thing I can see that they have in common is their basic colour ... blue! While this is the basic colour, all three do come in a wide palate from white to pink through blue to purple. Blue flowers in general symbolise trust and support and a bouquet of blue flowers provide a calming presence in a room. Other related meanings are intimacy and openness. I once had a trellis covered in morning glory that really caused some problems and was extremely hard to eradicate. It is a very invasive climber and in some areas is an environmental disaster and classed as a noxious weed, so be careful where you grow it. They are native to South America but are now grown all over the world. The particular meaning associated with the morning glory seems to be love in vain, unrequited love and death of love. Morning glory seeds have many uses in Chinese medicine and among native Americans for treating disorders of the lungs, kidneys and large intestines. The flowers, leaves, stems and seeds are all used but should all be treated with great

care and caution. It is best to leave it to the professionals. Most forget-me-nots like cool moist positions and so are ideal around ponds and water gardens. Once they are established they will self-seed and reappear in coming years in unexpected places where the seeds have drifted. They will flower in spring and early summer and always add a distinct “cottage” feeling to the garden. One of the origins attributed to the name is the legend of the German knight who was gathering the flowers, fell into the river in full armour, cried “forget me not!” as he threw the flowers to his sweetheart on to the bank and drowned! Myosotis is the genus of these lovely flowers and this unusual Greek name means “mouse’s ears” and desribes the shape of the leaves. In Newfoundland, Canada, forget-me-

nots are worn on 1 July in memory of those lost in World War 1 in much the same way we wear red poppies on 11 November. The meaning for forget-me-nots is fairly self-explanatory and does symbolise everlasting love, just the opposite of the morning glory. Lastly, asters symbolise love, devotion, patience and daintiness. So all three of this month’s flowers have something to do with love. The name aster is derived from the Greek word for star and relates to the lovely shape of the flower. Don’t forget our own Garden Competition next month. Entry forms are available from Bryson’s place at the new address, 66 Palmerin Street. With 19 classes there is a category for most gardens. Entries close on Friday 6 October with judging commencing the following Monday. The Spring Flower show will be held in St Mary’s Hall in Wood Street on Wednesday 18 and Thursday 19 October. While the season has not been kind this year we still encourage the great gardeners of the Southern Downs Region to support us with entries. Businesses have not been forgotten with the Floral Window Display Competition. Some shops are happy for their windows to be decorated if not doing so themselves. Ask around, find a window, think of a theme if you like and promote your group. ●

Save every drop With the dry weather continuing - be water-wise! With water restrictions in place we all need to b e very careful how we use water in our gardens. Here as just a few tips to help keep things going: - Mulching is most important as it will help retain moisture for the plants to use. - Recycle. A grey water system is helpful and fairly easy to implement even if it only is a hose connected to your washing machine overflow and put onto the lawn or a flower bed. - A rain water tank for garden use is a great idea and is on my wish list. - Check all your hose fittings and taps and washers and replace any that may be leaking. Even a small leak can waste as much as 2,000 litres a month. - Timing is essential. Watering early morning and late evening minimises the amount of water lost to evaporation. - Choose your plants with water needs in mind. Natives generally require less water than exotics. - Lastly, put your mower blades up a notch, don’t cut too short. I have found using a mulching mower is a good idea. ●

THE SPIN

RICE PLAN COMES TO FRUITION I picked up the Sydney Telegraph on Monday and was blown away by an article written by respected sporting journo Phil Rothfield. It centred around the Group 19 grand final and the fairytale victory of the Macintyre Warriors over the Narwan Eels. The game played in Boggabilla population 280 - grand final day 2500. Who says bush footy is dead. Not many in our area would know a great deal about either team however if I mention the winners, president Peter Rice, I am sure it will prick the interest of many. Peter Rice bought Goondiwindi into the BRL competition during my time as chairman. Rice may have rubbed some people up the wrong way, but his passion for rugby league was unquestionable. He was then the driving force behind the Boars, and the year following he advocated their return to the TRL. Since then he and the Boars have parted company, and he set out on a mission two years ago to form a club “across the river“ to help get local kids off the streets, away from alcohol and crime. It was a great plan, and Rice once again put his money where his mouth was and sponsored the fledgling club. He was not at the game this weekend to see his plan come to fruition. He stepped down as president just prior to the game after thieves sued sledgehammers to destroy his business Gundy Guns. For Rice that was the last straw. He says he’s done. That is the last straw, and the fire’s gone out of the belly. The grand final was itself a smorgasbord of bush footy “Indigenous style“ to quote Rothfield. It was by all accounts a spectacular game, and in an amazing finale it was the Warriors 26-22. Rothfield writes that after the game “you are thankful that these two great clubs have restored your faith in rugby league“. Big words from the scribe. “Shame Peter Rice wasn’t there to see it“. And so it was. - Casey SO NOW THERE ARE FOUR It was a weekend of triumph over adversity for the Broncos and Cowboys, and now both sides are 80 minutes away from the NRL grand final and potentially a repeat of the thrilling 2015 grand final - Do we as Queenslanders dare to dream? On Friday night the Broncos might have been bruised and battered and down on numbers, but they found a way to win and while they have had their critics you can do no more than win. Coach Wayne Bennett may have a headache to almost rival Corey Oates this week as he tries to sort out his selections. In addition to the sickening concussion to Oates, the Broncos will also be monitoring Jai Arrow (concussion) and Sam Thaiday (concussion). The one thing we do know is captain Darius Boyd will be back in the frame this weekend and will provide a boost for the Broncos when they face what has been the biggest challenge for any team this season, the Melbourne Storm. Melbourne will start short priced favourites for this game and rightly so. They have been described as unbeatable and the best ever in some circles. The Broncos have won just two of their last 12 matches against Melbourne, add to that Melbourne have only lost four games all year. It doesn’t paint a pretty picture for Brisbane. 18 SOUTHERN FREE TIMES

Winners of the Second Division of the Mens Foursome championships are congratulated by sponsor Cal Smith.

Three Times a Breeze - winners of the recent Men's Foursome in Stanthorpe Matt Waterworth and Mick O'Brien made it three wins in three years - the winning team is pictured with sponsor Cal Smith (centre).

However, as we have seen throughout the finals series there are no certainties in 2017 and it would be foolish to write off Brisbane who have a final’s record to rival Melbourne. The Broncos will take some hope from their recent outings in Melbourne, winning two of their past three clashes at AAMI Park, with their only loss a 14-12 nail-biter in Round three. Belief that they can win will be the blueprint Bennet and the Broncos will be looking for to upset one of the best coached teams in the NRL. Ben Hunt was at his absolute brilliant best on Friday night, and looks committed to making amends for the 2015 grand final loss before he parts company with the Broncos. Another inspired performance against will be needed for that to happen. It will be the final time the three Melbourne Musketeers, Smith, Cronk and Slater run out together at AAMI park. You can be sure they will bring everything they have in their bag of tricks to ensure it is not their final game together. If last Friday night was the NRL appetiser, then the main course was absolutely mouth watering as the Cowboys defied the odds once again to book their place in the preliminary final. Although the Cowboys received a heroes welcome on their return to Townsville last weekend, they have bigger fish to fry, or at least Chooks. The Cowboys main man has always been Jonathon Thurston but as a football team they came of age without him against Parra. The man himself describing this team as the gutsiest he has ever witnessed. The Cowboys who were not meant to even figure in the finals have trailed in both their finals wins and shown pure grit and determination to get the job done. While all the talk has been on the injured co-captains Thurston and Scott, Paul Green has been dealing with a huge injury toll to other senior key players throughout the season. The Cowboys ride to this season has been a tale of triumph over adversity, and it is not over yet as the club and supporters sweat on the fitness of Coen Hess for the clash against the Roosters. The Cowboys club have shown on the field how strong their bond is but the sight of Thurston and Matt Scott on clean-up duties in the rooms following Saturday night’s win shows the strength of the club culture and why the pair are both held in such respect by their peers. The Roosters are certainly not invincible and the Cowboys will be full of belief their dream run can continue. The tri colours have shown all season a tendency to switch on and off in games, and if they hit the pause button this weekend they will find themselves unplugged. It’s sure to be a finger lickin’ good game.

SIGN ON FOR LITTLE “A“ Little Athletics Stanthorpe will hold their sign on day on Sunday 8 October 2017, from noon at the Stanthorpe State High School Sports Facility. The Little Athletics FAST Program or Fundamental Athletics Skills Training is a condensed Little Athletics program (designed by Little Athletics Queensland), and will commence on Wednesday 11 October 2017 at the Stanthorpe State High School Sports Facility from 5.15pm. The program will run for one hour each week over an eight-week period, and if successful organisers hope to run the program again in Term One of 2018. The cost per child for the eight-week block is $50. You can fast track your registration on sign on day by printing and completing the registration form on the Little Athletics Facebook page. Organisers are excited to see the Little Athletics program back on the Stanthorpe sporting scene, and if you have any queries email stanthorpelittleathletics@gmail.com PERFECT CONDITIONS FOR THE MALLET The golf croquet crew struck perfect conditions when they played last week. Shirley Page topped the scoring in the singles games with a 10 hoops. Elaine Brown and Teresa Pyne shared the top combined two game score of 14 hoops each and Justin Liddy scored a great hoop in one. In the opening game, Shirley Page partnered Justin Liddy for a close 13 - 12 win over Marian Castle and Teresa Pyne. Bev Sullivan and Val Fancourt both played well to score a 13 - 10 win over Elaine Brown and Sharyn Roser. After the break Val Fancourt and Elaine Brown scored 13 hoops in their game against Justin Liddy and Bev Sullivan 11. Judy Lock and Sharyn Roser had an 11 9 win in their game against Shirley Page and Teresa Pyne. At the association croquet games earlier in the week, Jenny Tunbridge and Val Richardson starred to defeat opponents Pat Schnoor 22-14 when they played association croquet last week. In the other game decided, it was Val Shepherd and Andrea Denkewitz who were in winning form. They finished their game against Effey Russell and Verwey with a 22-17 win. At gateball on Friday it was Andrea Denkewitz, Margaret Dickenson, Grace Howard, Heather Widderick and Jenny Tunbridge (Team One)played (Team Two) Bill Golding, Val Fancourt, Sharyn Roser and Les Williams (just back from his UK travels). The teams proved to be evenly matched (despite the odd numbers). In game one, the scores were locked at 11-all with just a couple of minutes of play remaining. Team two had the final shots of the game

Ladies nett winners of the Stanthorpe Foursomes competition were Neta Thouard and Lyn Evans. and scored a further three points to win a thrilling game 14 - 11. The second game proved even closer with team one scraping home 15-14. In the third game played after the break, Team one scored a hard-fought win, taking out the game 11-9. Team two managed to square the ledger in the final game scoring a win. It was the biggest winning margin of the day 13-7. LOCALS LEAD THE WAY The Wallangarra Golf Club hosted two big days of competition last weekend, and it was the local players who led the way. Steve Hampstead won the single stroke played on Saturday ahead of runner-up Nick Hurtz. Jamie Purcell took the captain stakes. Only two pins went off on Saturday. Eventual winner Steve Hampstead picked up the ninth while it was Jason Hurtz who claimed the hard hitting 11th. Kevin Williams didn’t go home empty-handed, taking the approach on the 14th. On Sunday, players from Toowoomba, Stanthorpe and Tenterfield joined the local contingent on the course for the annual Two Ball Ambrose Golf World Day sponsored by the guys and girls at Golf World Toowoomba. Again it was the locals leading the way. The nett winners were the duo of Peter Butler and Simon Blair. Gross winners were Cameron Bolton and Steve Hampstead. Nett runner-up went to the Tenterfield father and son duo, the Cutmores finished nett runners-up. Rundowns went to Kevin Williams and Tony Murphy, the Hurtz pairing, Wayne Davis and Peter Williams. Jamie Purcell and Andrew Thompson and Stanthorpe pair Lorene Evans and Graham Tomkin. Peter Butler topped off a great day, taking the pin on the 3/15. Michael Cutmore senior took out the ninth and Tony Murphy grabbed the 11th. Lorene Evans took the 3/15 for the ladies and the Ladies accuracy drive. The Men’s accuracy drive went to Michael Cutmore Snr. This weekend the President vs Captain Single Stableford is on the cards and all are welcome. freetimes.com.au

CRAFTY WIN FOR MAUGERI Angelo Maugeri crafted a win in the stableford event played in Stanthorpe last Saturday with a final score of 43 points for his round. He played a well- constructed 26 points on the front nine before coming in with a sedate 17 points on the back nine. The runner-up, Ian Harvey, did the reverse. He went out with 15 points before heading home with 26 points on the back nine. Pin shots were won by Keith Jones at three, Mick O’Brien at 12 and no one bettered the wind to claim 17. Pro-pins went to Ian Harvey at 1/10, Len Leigh at 5/14 and David Burgess at 9/18. In the ladies event, Lyn Ludlow was a convincing winner with 41 points. Like the men’s winner, Lyn had a very good front nine score of 23 points and her 18 points on the back, was good enough to win the day. Helen Jones has been golfing in places north of here and brought some good form back home to claim the runners-up spot after a countback with 38 points. There were no pin shots to the ladies but the winner, Lyn Ludlow, had best approach at 17. The run down for the men and the ladies went to 38 points and better. Thanks to the sponsors Ron and Annelle Batterham. Apparently, the rumour that first prize was to help spread deco at Ron’s place, was just that - a rumour. Several match play games were also played. Junior golfer, Billy Webb was successful over Rob Reeves and now progresses to the final. Mark McCosker had the wood on Alan Kerr and Mark goes into a semi-final match. On Monday, the club hosted the Darling Downs Vet golfers. A big field of 50 players hit the greens and fairways. Flying the flag for the locals was the winning team of Angelo Maugeri and Aaron Simmers. Thanks to the host of volunteers who helped on the day, especially the ladies for the lunches and morning tea. This Saturday Eric and Shaneen

McLellan are sponsors of the single Stableford competition and there is a time sheet on the board at the club house. A reminder that tee off is still at 11am. BRACKIN MAKING GOOD ON MOVE The move for Boxer Chris Brackin from Stanthorpe to Toowoomba and the opportunity to train under renowned trainer Brendon Smith at Smithy’s TGW Gym is paying dividends. Brackin recorded an impressive win when he stopped Warwick boxer Kyle Teerin at the main event in the first Super Sunday Series at Smithy’s, and is building quite a reputation and an impressive professional record. The referee stopped the fight a little over two minutes in to the second round after a strong performance from Brackin. Brendon Smith, Brackin’s trainer and promoter of the event which featured amateur and corporate bouts was pleased with what he saw from Brackin. LOCAL WIN IN ALLORA CUP The feature event of the Warwick Turf Club’s five-event programme last Saturday was the Allora Cup, and honours went to the locally trained Drum Muster. The four-year-old gelding trained by Les Clarke showed his liking for his home track, making it two wins from two starts at Allman Park. Starting at the good odds of $7, Drum Muster ridden by mature-aged apprentice Michael Schrapnel who claimed a kilo and half allowance on the galloper won by two and half lengths on the line. It gave Michael Schrapnel back to back Allora Cups after tasting success in the event last year. Armidale visitor Lover in Flight opened the meeting with a win in the Anthony Parker Painters Maiden, but had to overcome a protest by the fourth horse. Real Dynamite’s rider Fiona Jervis alleged interference in the straight when the winner shifted ground, but the protest was subsequently dismissed.

CASEY O’CONNOR

The six-year-old mare put the writing on the wall with a solid third at Coffs harbour at her last outing, and was the punters popular pick starting $3 favourite. Massie Whisper was a late scratching in the opening event when there was no rider available. Punters were also cheering after the second event the Class B 1350m Handicap sponsored by the Allora RSL Sub Branch and Invergarry Equine Vet Centre. $4 favourite Fine Eyes from the Toowoomba stable of Rex Lipp and ridden by Toowoomba jockey Kenji Yoshida finished a half length clear of Nautical Lad and Journalist. The winner overcame a bump as the field entered the straight but finished strongly to win by half a length. The third event was won by the Beaudesert trained Rocky Halo. Ridden by apprentice Sally Sweeney for Mark Palmer and connections the gelding was having his first start on the track and began awkwardly before finding his galloping rhythm. In a tight finish, Rocky Halo edged out second placegetter Match Day who may have been a little unlucky. His jockey Beau Appo dropped the whip at the 50m mark. The meeting wrapped up with the running of the m Open Handicap sponsored by Pershouse Rural, Allora. Sun Will Shine ridden by Nathan Evans started at the short odds of $2.70 and despite hanging throughout the race and being tightened for room at the 800m mark proved too strong for the opposition. The Warwick Turf club will next race on 14 October for the running of the feature event the Warwick Credit Union Warwick Cup. CHILLY START FOR SPORTERS It might be September, but those who turned out for Sporters in Stanthorpe last Sunday were met with a pretty cool morning. The cool conditions proved no problem for Norm Steele who went home with the winner’s meat tray tucked under his

arm after some hot play. Ian Anderson was runner-up, and had his hands full of golf balls after also collecting for best gross on the day. Best of the rest for the run down went to Bob Watts and Aaron Simmers. Mark Lynam’s tee shot at the third hole was good enough for him to claim the nearest to the pin for the morning. The Propin at the fifth hole was very elusive with no one getting on the green for two. Raffle winners were John Walsh and Dick Hilton. Dick did a good impression of president Ray who is away holidaying, so it was fitting he won a meat tray. Sporters this Sunday is at the usual tee off time of 8am. Why not join the fun. LOOKING GOOD FOR BATHURST 22-year-old Warwick driving sensation Matt Campbell returned from a successful overseas stint to join the Red Bull Holden Racing team in the Sandown 500 on Sunday, and will be part of the team for the Enduro season. Campbell was co-driver for reigning V8 champion driver Shane van Gisbergen. Gisbergen was first behind the wheel at Sandown, and had improved to third position by the first change over to Campbell who drove for the next 64 laps. Unfortunately, shortly after Van Gisbergen got back in the car, a blown tyre ended the pair’s hopes of a podium finish. While that was disappointing, the pair are looking good for the upcoming Bathurst race on 5 October. There is sure to be plenty of local support for Campbell as he makes his way round the Mount Panorama track.

WARWICK BOWLS Jackpot Pairs bowls were played on Wednesday 13 September with 12 teams playing. The beautiful weather is helping the numbers on the Green. The Jackpot did not go off, and the Domino’s Pizza vouchers went to Trevor Wright and Ian Gambrill. Domino’s sponsorship is very much appreciated by our club. Last Saturday, the club’s Special Meeting regarding the constitution was held with 43 members present. We thank the ladies for preparing a beautiful sandwich lunch for everyone. Following lunch, a fun afternoon of bowls was arranged by one of our esteemed members whose hidden talents for entertaining were quite incredible (apron and all). He also invented an original game of bowls - called ‘Snickers and Mars Bars’. It really deserves to be in the Guinness Book of Records - 2017. The club will also have its Members draw which has jackpotted. Our players really enjoyed the day last Sunday which kicked off with a barbecue lunch followed by a game of bowls. Many thanks to Dave Scotney, Clark Davidson and Prickles for sponsoring the afternoon. Results: G. Johnson, L. Hartley, M. Ford, J. Johnson d I. Thompson, Q. Hamer, Y. Reid, C. Davidson 23-15; R. Lawson, A. Buse, C. Hope d L. Marriott, K. Seaby, C. Wickham 23-12; R. Hope, T. Francis, D. Scotney d R. Francis, J. Marriott, C. Sawyer 30-22; Cory, L. Butler, G. Davis, B. Bourke d Gordon, J. Buse, K. Hankinson, W. Foster 22-15. The winning team was B. Bourke’s team and the runners-up were J. Johnson’s team. With prizes for touchers during the game and plenty of raffle prizes most players had a little win. Thanks to Prickles for cooking the barbecue. Winners of our monthly Turkey triples which were played last Wednesday on a countback were P. Gainey, B. Cross and G. Cross on 28 points, the runners-up were R. Lawson, K. Seaby and B. Bourke also on 28 points. Results - G. Assay, M. Shepherd,

WARWICK EAST BOWLS On Saturday the club played two rounds of fours in the mixed social bowls. The result of the first round was: E. Diery, N. Hassum, C. Lawler, B. Lee 10 d P. Dipplesman, D. Hassum, F. Gambrill 5. The random draw for the second round resulted in the same teams, with the same result 10-5. Thus the winners on the day were E. Diery, N. Hassum, C. Lawler and B. Lee. Once again the attempt at the jackpot was unsuccessful. Its value is now over $120. There will be no mixed social bowls on Saturday, as the district pairs competition is played at Warwick East. They will resume as usual on Saturday 30 September. Thursday next week is our monthly Red Rooster mixed triples day. Play starts at noon. Phone the club on 4661 9050 between10.30am and 11.30am if you would like a game.
