Plan now for fire By Derek Schlennstedt The CFA is warning of a long, dry fire season and is urging Yarra Ranges residents to start planning now. With parts of NSW already affected by bushfire, indicators suggest the fire danger period might be declared earlier this year, as conditions point to a dangerous summer. The warning comes after Victoria experienced its driest winter since 2006, and Emergency Services Commissioner, Craig Lapsley, said the bushfire risk would now depend upon the rainfall Victoria received in spring. “The severity of the fire season will depend on a number of factors, including the amount, location and timing of rain in the months leading up to summer,” Commissioner Lapsley said. “The early forecast shows there is underlying dryness in some areas of the state, particularly across central parts of Victoria and across the east. “While there is a lot of surface water, which means there will be grass growth and a healthy supply of water for crop growing, ground moisture has the potential to dry out quickly under dry and warm conditions. “The level of risk ... will still depend on how much spring rain there is in September.” Summer season preparations across the Yarra Ranges are already well underway, with local brigades and agencies undertaking planned burns. District 13 Operations Manager, Don Tomkins shared Commissioner Lapsley’s concerns and said that even despite recent rain, residents across the region lived in a fire-prone area and therefore should always be prepared for the summer fire season. “The information that we’ve been given indicates that we could potentially have an earlier fire season than traditional times, however we do live in a fire-prone area so it is about be-

ing prepared - there will be a fire season in some shape or form," he said. “Fire agencies are already going into planned burning phases and obviously while we do this, private landowners also need to take responsibility and clean up their land.” Though preparations may not completely prevent fires from occurring, improvements in facilities by the government ensures fires are extinguished as soon as they are reported to fire services. Mr Tomkins said one of the most pleasing aspects of this year’s fire season preparations had been the Victorian Government investment in fire-fighting aircraft. Overall, 49 aircraft will be on hand this fire season, including two large air tankers and two orange air-cranes - similar to the existing ‘Elvis’ Erickson aircranes - will be part of the $13.42 million fleet lease this year. “The biggest aircraft fleet we’ve seen, with more aircraft than previous seasons,” Mr Tomkins said. “It’s certainly beneficial ... aircraft can be dispatched at a certain trigger mark together with the brigade to get in there early, and hopefully assist us in getting on top of the fire early.” With fire services playing their part to reduce fuel loads, Mr Tomkins said the onus was now on residents and said it was important for communities to work together and help one another and utilise the information available to them via the CFA websites and apps. “We know there will be a fire season and it’s making sure we are all prepared,” he said. “You can approach local brigades or our community safety department - our district can provide a lot of information to enable people to become prepared for the forthcoming fire season.”

Inspiration - buy the book! Montrose-born inspirational author Heather Hawkins officially launched her book at the Montrose Town Centre on Saturday 2 September. In front of her ‘home crowd’, Hawkins’ book, ‘Adventurous Spirit’, tells the incredible story of Hawkins’ diagnosis with ovarian cancer and subsequent surgery, which she has used as a catalyst to achieve some truly phenomenal feats. At 44, she completed her Surf Lifesaving Bronze Medal, before at 47 putting on an old pair of runners and completing the Mother’s Day fun run with her kids, which proved to be a “light bulb moment”. Hawkins now has 18 marathons under her belt, taking out first place in the Women’s Division - and eighth overall (beating 27 men) - in the 2015 North Pole Marathon, which was held in temperatures of minus 41 degrees. She also became the first Australian woman to be a member of the Intercontinental Marathon Club, when she completed the World Marathon Challenge - an incredible seven marathons in seven days on seven continents. Despite all these incredible achievements, Hawkins told the ‘Mail’ she is “just an ordinary mum from the suburbs”, who just happened to grow up in Montrose. “I feel incredibly blessed for my family and to have been raised by two amazing parents who inspire me every day,” she said. “Putting pen to paper is something that started to come more naturally to me since my cancer diagnosis. Keeping a journal was a way for me to decompress my thoughts and are a

great thing to look back on now.” Hawkins said she never dreamed these precious journal entries would one day be shared across the country. She recalled back in 2007, when she and her husband, Doug, were juggling work and family life, their life was thrown into chaos. Doug said her diagnosis had been a huge shock for the family. “Heather and I were so busy with our business and taking the kids to school, just going about day-to-day life, keeping up with our demanding schedule,” he said. “Heather had been suffering from discomfort and wasn’t quite feeling herself. “With her background in nursing, Heather knew something wasn’t quite right ... by the end of the day, she received the news she had been dreading. “We knew it must be bad, as our family doctor was in tears. “What was a normal day of school drop-offs and work meetings had turned into dealing with a shock ovarian cancer diagnosis.” Through the book, Hawkins reveals how she completely reassessed what was important to her, and that her passion for fitness and health became stronger than ever. Her running spark came after five cancer-free years, in 2012 and aged 47. Entering into the Mother’s Day Classic with her two children, Hawkins said: “I can remember it like it was yesterday. That was a huge light bulb moment ... something clicked for me and I haven’t looked back.” To purchase the book, or to find out more about Hawkins’ journey, visit www.adventurousspirit.com.au.

New highway patrol vehicles Victoria Police Highway Patrol units around the state will replace their Ford Falcon and Holden Commodore V8 pursuit cars with a fleet of turbo diesel BMW 5 Series sedans from next year. Victoria Police has confirmed that BMW will provide up to 80 of its 530d sedans to be used as highway patrol cars, starting early 2018. With the end of local production of the Falcon last year and the Commodore reaching the end of the line next month, police divisions across Australia have had to source new cars for the highway patrol. BMW is one of the few car manufacturers globally to make vehicles specifically for police work. Police in Germany, Italy and the UK also use BMW sedans for highway patrol duties. The BMW has acceleration and braking to match the Falcon and Commodore, yet uses half as much fuel as a Commodore V8 and has more advanced safety technology.

Footpaths to connect all over: it’s in the program Cardinia Shire Council has announced it will connect eight new footpaths throughout the shire, including around the Dandenong Ranges, as part of its 2017-’18 footpath program. The program aims to complete many of the missing links in footpaths across local townships and add to the footpath projects being carried out in council-managed parks and reserves. Some of the projects include a gravel footpath from the service station in BelgraveGembrook Road, Gembrook to Station Street, to complete the pedestrian link from the town centre to Gembrook Recreation Reserve. Also, upgrading the existing gravel path in Macclesfield Road, Avonsleigh, between Belgrave-Gembrook and Fairway roads, which will improve access for all abilities in the township. Meanwhile, a new concrete path will be completed in Fairbridge Lane, Cockatoo, connecting the Cockatoo to Gem-

The 2017-'18 footpath program will add to existing networks. 172792 brook multi-use trail (currently under construction). Also, a new path along Pinnocks Road, Emerald, which will link residential areas currently without a footpath and join the new path, which will be constructed as part of this year’s Pedestrian and Bicycle Strategy program, linking Clematis and the Emerald township. The pedestrian and bicycle program will see two additional footpaths constructed. The Clematis to Emerald

shared path along the Puffing Billy railway corridor (which has also received a $100,000 TAC grant) aims to improve pedestrian access to local recreation reserves. Mayor Cr Brett Owen said council had worked through a list of over 300 paths from across the municipality to select the projects that were delivered each financial year. “Each path is assessed on its strategic value, safety, usage and community demand,” he said. “Working through that list is a long-term priority for us, when we go through the budget each year. “We know there are many footpaths that need to be constructed and existing ones that need to be connected in all townships. “We are committed to delivering more and more kilometres of paths each year, so residents can move around their neighbourhood safely.”

Letters NBN wreckers Recently, with no warning as to when works would begin, our steep, unmade road was suddenly filled with a number of very heavy vehicles while they dug and drilled underground as part of the NBN works. As a consequence, our nature strip and shared driveway entrance ended up a muddy mess, with the road edging flattened completely. When we asked the subcontractor about it being cleaned up and restored, we were told there was no damage. So I talked to the actual contractor representative, a nice person, but he could not act and needed to escalate. Finally, we were contacted by NBN twice. The result was that as we did not have the foresight to photograph our road, nature strip and driveway before the works began, we were told it would be our word against theirs. The moral of this story: If you see the diggers coming, make sure you have plenty of photos before they start dig-

ging and making a mess, otherwise you will have no chance of getting things cleaned up and restored. It looks like it is up to me now to get out there with my shovel and rake and do what I can to repair the road edgings, and stop water cascading onto our nature strip so the beautiful native hyacinth orchids that we have nurtured over many years have a chance to survive. One of the NBN values is ‘listens to and delights customers’. I don’t think so! Jenny Dexter, The Patch

Think of the others In relation to the article ‘Donkey death’, my heart goes out to Haydi Kubrak and May on the tragic theft and killing of May’s new baby foal (‘Mail’, 12 September). Reading about how May was searching constantly for her lost baby, I was reminded of the millions of dairy cows who do exactly the same thing.

Each year, within hours of giving birth, their precious babies are stolen from them. Some try to fight off the attackers, some try to shield their babies with their own bodies, some chase frantically after the transport, some cry pitifully and some withdraw in silent despair. They all beg for their babies in language that requires no translation. They bellow, they cry, they moan. Some stop eating and drinking. Some withdraw in silent grief. Many continue to call for days and nights on end. The dairy industry brings these babies into the world for one reason only - to immediately slaughter them and steal their baby food. Please open your eyes to the cruelty of dairy. The only ones who need cows’ milk - and the only ones with a right to it - are baby calves. Jenny Moxham, Monbulk.

Farewell to a little angel By Peter Douglas and Wendy Williamson Family, friends and community members have continued sending out heartfelt condolences in the wake of the influenza death of an eight-year-old girl at Angliss Hospital. Rosie Andersen, 8, was admitted to the Upper Ferntree Gully-based hospital on the morning of Friday 15 September, but died later that day. In an effort to assist the family, a GoFundMe page has been set up - established by family friend James Bailey - which showed the level of compassion being directed towards the family. The page encouraged members of Ausjeep to support the family, with the organisation being a big part in the life of Rosie’s father, Christian Brealey. “His (Christian’s) family has suffered a loss this week, losing their precious Rosie Andersen to a simple flu in Melbourne,” the post read. “As the family struggle to come to terms with this loss, we are hoping to raise some donations to show how much we care about Christian and his family, and ease some of the burden during this time. “We know this would break the biggest and baddest of men!” Christian replied to the post, thanking the community for their support. “Words cannot describe the depths of our grief. We want to thank our friends and family and the broader community for all the messages of love and compassion,” he wrote. In a statement released last week to News Corp, dad Christian Brealey went on to encourage parents to immunise their children against the flu. “We are devastated by the loss of our beautiful, loving little angel,” he said.

Rosie Andersen, 8, passed away at the Angliss Hospital after battling influenza. 173240 “We urge everyone to get their kids immunised against the flu and ask only that our privacy is respected and our family given time and space to grieve.” La Trobe MP Jason Wood was another to send out his condolences last week, saying: “Heartfelt condolences go out to her grieving parents, family, friends and school community. Thoughts and praise also to paramedics and hospital staff who cared for young Rosie.”

Rosie’s death came as part of what experts have said is an outbreak of flu, with Victoria’s public and private hospitals reaching emergency capacities. About 13,000 flu cases in Victoria have been reported so far this year, nearly twice as many as last year. The flu this month already claimed the lives of several elderly people at an aged care facility in Wangaratta. Eastern Health Director of Emergency Services, Dr Peter Archer, told

the ‘Mail’ this region had seen a sizable increase in influenza-like presentations at its hospital emergency departments, including Angliss Hospital, Box Hill Hospital and Maroondah Hospital. “For example, from 1 May to 14 September 2016 there were 3507 influenza-like emergency department presentations at Eastern Health hospitals. This compares to 4804 influenza-like emergency department presentations from 1 May to 14 September 2017 - an

increase of 1297.” Dr Archer said it was essential for people to be aware of flu symptoms. “These include: fever, cough, sore throat, nasal congestion, body aches, headaches, chills, fatigue and occasional gastrointestinal upset - diarrhoea and vomiting,” Dr Archer said. Meanwhile, Eildon MP, Cindy McLeish, has announced a Coalition Government would provide up to $7 million over four years for free voluntary flu vaccinations for all Victorian children between the ages of six months and five years old. “Given the terrible flu season we have recently experienced, the Liberal Party want to ensure that the youngest in our community are protected from harm. That’s why we are committing to funding flu vaccinations for children up to five years of age,” she said. “Many parents do not have their children vaccinated against the flu, because of the cost. Funding the vaccine for young children will provide a strong incentive and clear message that the safety and well-being of their children is paramount and flu vaccinations are recommended. “Influenza is a deadly disease, with thousands of Victorians suffering from it every year. Tragically, flu takes the lives of many elderly people as well as otherwise healthy young children who can be particularly vulnerable to the illness.” Anyone unwell with flu-like symptoms should consult with their local general practitioner or get in touch with the Nurse-On-Call service (1300 60 60 24). To support Rosie’s family, visit the GoFundMe page at https://www.gofundme.com/support-australias-bestjeeper.

Bells of peace ringing out Developed in the hills, the song ‘Bells of Peace’ - along with the Federation Bells - rang out at Birrarung Marr for the International Day of Peace on Thursday 21 September. The Dandenong Ranges Music Council (DRMC) took centre stage, as students from Tecoma Primary, Belgrave South Primary, Kallista Primary, Upwey High School and members of Vocallista, Tecoma Peace Choir and Southgate Singers, combined in a massed choir, singing the ‘Bells of Peace’. The song was originally developed in 2015 through workshops with students from primary schools in the Yarra Ranges, with professional community music artist John Shortis. In 2017, funding from Creative Victoria has supported the creative development of the song by choral arranger Kate Sadler and bells composer Karen Berger. The Deputy Lord Mayor of Melbourne, Arron Wood, officially welcomed the choir and audience to the performance for the International Day of Peace. “The City of Melbourne is proud to support events such as this, and the work of the Dandenong Ranges Music Council to commemorate and strengthen the ideals of peace within and among all nations and people through music,” he said. “It’s so wonderful to hear our magnificent Federation Bells ringing out this song straight from the creative of minds of our young students. Music is a wonderful way to teach children about the past and inspire them to lead the way for a peaceful future.” Mayor of the Yarra Ranges, Cr Noel Cliff, was overjoyed with the performance and opportunity for Yarra Ranges to take centre stage in the City of Melbourne. “The Bells of Peace song has reached new heights with the beautiful choral harmonies and bells composition,” he said. Chair of the Dandenong Ranges Music Council, Ray Yates, said it was an exceptional day for community music and the DRMC. He highlighted the involvement in the choir of students from the 2015 project, ‘with our creative young people a confidence in our future blossoms’. At the end of the song, the bells of St Paul’s Cathedral rang out to carry the message of peace far and wide.

Solar scammers Scammers who claim to be installing solar electricity systems have been active in the Dandenong Ranges region, according to Cardinia Shire Council. The council has issued a warning to the public after reports the scammers were representing both the council and the Solar Savers program, which the council said was untrue. Council’s Solar Savers program required pensioners who were interested in the program to initiate contact with Solar Savers first to discuss their eligibility. Under the program, installation costs are paid for by council, then residents gradually pay for their panels over 10 years through a special rates charge. Applications for the program are now closed. If you believe you have been targeted, contact council on 1300 787 624, or report to www.scamwatch.gov.au, or call 1300 795 995.

Emerald Museum will finally receive the services of a dedicated museum officer, with the announcement lauded as a win for the icon’s long-term sustainability. Since opening in 1981, the museum has been run by a committee of management and a dedicated team of volunteers, who will now receive muchneeded support in the day-today running of the museum. The museum houses more than 3000 artefacts - including household items, photographs and agricultural machinery and continues to undertake significant research projects. Cardinia Shire Mayor, Cr Brett Owen, said council recognised the need for additional resources. “The committee of management and team of volunteers have done a fantastic job over the years, collecting and cataloguing the many artefacts that make up its valuable collection of local history,” Cr Owen said. “The position has been created in recognition of the significance of the contents of the museum, the resourcing needs to ensure its future sustainability and to support the volunteer committee.” Volunteer and former committee member of 26 years,

For education, and recreation Located at the foothills of the Dandenongs, Belgrave South Community House offers the local community a range of educational, recreational and leisure activities. As centre manager Lyn Taylor explained, with the Seniors Festival quickly approaching, Belgrave South Community House host a number of programs which are targeted specifically at the over-fifties community. “Our Cafe Club is a program where participants hop in the bus and go off on an adventure visiting local cafes for coffee, chat and investigating the area,” Lyn said. “The drivers are regular volunteers and we thank them for their years of commitment to the program. The program is planned each term with suggestions from participants. There are two longer day trips each term. Last week the participants visited Werribee Mansion then took a side trip to Werribee Marina, Sanctuary Lakes and Point Cook.” Lyn explained that the program was a great way for people to meet other like-minded individuals and address social isolation which she says is a growing issue among older people. Cafe Club runs on Monday mornings, leaving Belgrave South Community House at 9.30am. “We also hold Stronger for Longer which is our exercise program for older adults,” Lyn said. “Our experienced, qualified fitness instructors lead participants through a series of exercises aimed at maintaining fitness levels and falls prevention. “All levels of fitness are catered for and participants are individually monitored throughout the classes. Classes run on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 10am. “Some of the participants enjoy a social chat and coffee after the classes and a Christmas break-up is planned at a local cafe.” Belgrave South Community House is located at Gilmore Court in Belgrave South. For more information, phone 9754 2274 or, visit www.bsch.org.au.

60 years of The Cuckoo’s call A hills curiosity with a rich history, The Cuckoo will celebrate 60 years of hearty festivity this October. A traditional Bavarian restaurant, The Cuckoo, as it is known today, was pioneered by Willi and Karin Koeppen. As The Cuckoo history goes, the once modest refreshment stop was named after Karin heard the sound of a cuckoo calling during the night. Nowadays, The Cuckoo seats 450 people in three separate dining rooms and is renowned for its smorgasbords. And as assistant manager Simone Gordon explained, with a warm, ambient atmosphere, The Cuckoo advocates family togetherness and does its best to provide an experience where people forget their troubles and have fun. “We are a strong, generational restaurant that is tried and tested over many years,” Simone said. “We have the winning combination of family, fun and audience participation which creates the magic that attracts people again and again.” Drawing visitors from all over the globe, the Cuckoo combines excellent service, an all you can eat policy for all food buffets with traditional Bavarian entertainment. “We offer value for money where you can eat as much as you want while enjoying the music and floor show,” Simone said. “But our focus is to continue being a part of people’s happy memories ... we want to create experiences where customers feel compelled to come back and experience the magic.” There are a number of upcoming events at The Cuckoo including Oktoberfest which will be celebrated on 14 and 15 October with family fun, games, entertainment and prizes for best-dressed. The Cuckoo Restaurant is located at 508 Mount Dandenong Tourist Road in Olinda. For more information, phone 9751 1003 or visit www.cuckoorestaurant.com.au

Moronic special event has been screening to sold-out audiences since its launch in March last year. Producer Chris Dockrill calls it a ‘hybrid film’ of the live show of the same name. “Everyone loves it. Some people re-

turned to see the live show up to seven times. Viewers have also returned to see the film many times,” Dockrill said. Audiences for the live show and film have ranged from seven to 96 years old, with screening also occurring at the Adelaide Fringe Festival. 12366229-LN39-17

After impressing audiences nationally, high-energy rock musical show ‘The Island of Doctor Moron’ will be screened at a special event at the Cameo Cinema in Belgrave on Friday 29 September. The show has been described as ‘Rocky Horror Show on steroids’ and

The show has won support from many in the industry, including Australian author Matthew Reilly and actor Jack Thompson AM. “ ‘The Island of Doctor Moron’ has breathed new life into musical theatre. I witnessed this show work its magic on a full-house audience,” Thompson said.

“The energy the show produces is irresistible; it is destined to captivate audiences all over the world.” The Cameo screening will start at 6.45pm. For more details, visit www.theislandofdoctormoron.com.

Mother-lode of disappointment By Seth Hynes Mother! MA15+ Starring Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem Mother! is an ambitious, beautiful and harrowing misfire. A housewife (Jennifer Lawrence) becomes increasingly frustrated as her poet husband (Javier Bardem) invites droves of people to stay in their secluded mansion. Mother! was both intriguing and aggravating from its first moments. Much of the cinematography consists of hand-held camerawork combined with extreme close-ups, which makes the first half feel very artificial, and Mother! lacks a sane starting-point for the drama to truly catch us off-guard. The performances are riveting, and Mother! generates an extremely unnerving atmosphere even before the morbid carnage of the climax,

but the intended allegory is very muddled. Mother! is full of Biblical symbolism, with the narrative essentially presenting a stylised, condensed history of Christianity. Representing God (through Bardem’s poet character) as a narcissistic artist obsessed with adulation isn’t a bad interpretation of the Old Testament God, and I initially took the ‘Mother’ character (Lawrence) to be a redemptive, empowered version of Lilith, a persecuted, little-known figure from Jewish folklore. But director Darren Aronofsky has explicitly framed Mother as ‘Mother Nature’, with Mother’s distress and trauma symbolising our exploitation and destruction of the Earth. This is an abstract, contrived stretch, and is very incongruous with the often heavy-handed Biblical metaphor. We’re ultimately left with a film full of bloody shock value and allegorical weight that, while morbidly captivating on the surface, says very little.

Olinda routs Woori Yallock By Cameron Hutchison Division 1 (Seniors) Grand final (Saturday 23 September) Olinda Ferny Creek 18.17(125) d Woori Yallock 3.6(24) Olinda Ferny Creek are the 2017 premiers, and are celebrating their first Division 1 premiership. The game started off with both sides testing each other out and getting used to the windy conditions. Olinda had seven scoring shots to four but both sides only kicked a single goal in the first quarter and Olinda had a slim lead by three points. Olinda acclimatised to the conditions quickly and piled on 6.1 to only three behinds in the second term, and it looked like it was going to be a tough day for Woori Yallock trailing Olinda by 37 points at the main break. Wind or not, Olinda had no trouble and kicked another 6.5 in the third quarter to Woori Yallock’s two goals and the margin had blown out to 66 points at three-quarter time. Woori Yallock had no answers for Olinda’s dominance and could not get their game going at all during the day. The celebrations would have started early, but Olinda put on a clinic in the last term, holding Woori Yallock scoreless and peppered the goals with 5.5 to make the final margin a massive 101 points. Olinda Ferny Creek Best: N. Broomhall (AFL VIC ‘Best on Ground’ Medalist), L. Hill, D. Fitzgerald, M. Hottes, J. Charge, B. Walter Woori Yallock Best: R. Allen, J. Adams, S. Kennedy, C. Smedley, L. Boontjes, J. Coombs Olinda Ferny Creek Goal Kickers: N. Broomhall 6, L. Taylor 3, D. Rohrmann 2, J. Charge 2, M. Bonuda 2, B. Walter 1, M. Hottes 1, E. Greenall 1 Woori Yallock Goal Kickers: J. Williams 2, A. Marsh 1 Division 1 Reserves Grand Final (Saturday 23 September) Wandin 8.6(54) d Olinda Ferny Creek 7.10(52) Olinda Ferny Creek were playing for back-to-back premierships but were outclassed by a more desperate side in Wandin who have won the 2017 reserves premiership. Olinda started strongly kicking 4.2 to two goals to take a lead of 14 points into the second quarter, and it looked like it was going to be Olinda’s day. Wandin made the most of the wind in the second quarter and jumped Olinda, kicking 3.3

Olinda Ferny Creek celebrates a decisive win of 101 points over Woori Yallock to take out the senior 2017 premiership. 173275 Pictures: GREG CARRICK to one behind to take the lead back by six points at half-time. The third term was a torrid 20 minutes of football with Olinda, kicking 2.3 to Wandin’s 1.1 and the lead was Olinda’s just by two points at the final break. This game went right down to the wire - Wandin kicked 2.2 and as much as Olinda peppered the goals, kicking 1.4; they could not jag any majors and Wandin came away with a nail-biting two-point win at the final siren. Wandin Best: D. Ladner (AFL Yarra Ranges ‘Best on Ground’ Medalist), B. Foley, L. McPhee, J. Iedema, D. Bailey, J. Napoleone Olinda Ferny Creek Best: B. Telford, S. Hill, B. Currie, R. Davis, R. Cottam-Starkey, G. Stevens Wandin Goal Kickers: L. McPhee 3, B. Foley 2, N. Crossland 1, T. Adamson 1, M. Shanks 1 Olinda Ferny Creek Goal Kickers: G. Stevens 3, R. Davis 1, S. Hill 1, M. Harris 1, B. Telford 1 Under 18s Grand final (Saturday 23 September) Wandin 6.9(45) d Emerald 6.8(44) Wandin have come away with a surprise one-point win over Emerald and have been crowned the under 18s premiers for 2017. The first quarter was tight as both sides battled for some sort of ascendency. Wandin kicked 1.2 to 1.1 to take a slim lead at quarter-time. Emerald played the blustery conditions well in the second term and kicked away with 2.4 to three behinds to have a lead of 12 points at half-time. Wandin

came out in the third quarter and dominated all facets of the game, kicking 4.3 to zip; however, the game was still theirs to lose with a 15-point lead at three-quarter time. Emerald had the aid of the breeze in the last and kicked 3.3, but Wandin battled hard and managed to kick 1.1 against the odds, sneaking home with a one-point win. Wandin Best: T. Merlino (AFL VIC ‘Best on Ground’ Medalist), P. Bruzzese, A. Baker, T. Smith, M. Smith, B. Stokes Emerald Best: M. Thomas, C. Roma, K. Jordan-Hill, J. Campsell, A. Stuhldreier, B. Stuhldreier Wandin Goal Kickers: A. Baker 4, T. Merlino 1, R. Smith 1 Emerald Goal Kickers: M. Thomas 2, B. Wood 2, C. Roma 1, R. Goonan 1 Netball Grand Finals (Saturday 23 September) Division 1 A Grade Olinda Ferny Creek 69 d Woori Yallock 53 Olinda Ferny Creek have been crowned minor premiers and the 2017 champions after a good win over Woori Yallock. Olinda got the jump, shooting 17 goals to 11 in the first quarter and was never really challenged from there as the lead was always going to be a big chase for Woori Yallock. The second term was much tighter, and it was a bit of a goal shooting clinic with 33 goals being shot, but the lead was still Olinda’s by seven goals. Olinda took hold of the game well and truly in the third

quarter, shooting 18 goals to 12 and the lead was now 17 with one quarter to go. Again, the fourth term was a tight contest but Olinda had all the answers and is premiers for 2017. Olinda Ferny Creek Best: Peri Stewart (Anita Woods ‘Best on Court’ Medalist), Krista Tomlinson, Georgia Martin Woori Yallock Best: Stacey Fleming, Sarah Hogan, Shannon Bailey Division 1 B Grade Woori Yallock 39 d Monbulk Hawks 25 Woori Yallock has been crowned minor premiers and the 2017 champions after a win over Monbulk Hawks. The first quarter was tight and it looked like the game was going to be tough from the outset. It was eight-all at quarter-time, with no side giving an inch. Woori Yallock took control in the second term shooting 15 goals to six and set up a handy half- time lead by nine goals. It all tightened up in the third quarter and it was a low-scoring one with only nine goals being shot, but Monbulk could not make any inroads into Woori Yallock’ lead of 10 goals. Woori Yallock played out the last term with an advantage of four goals, and have been the first team to beat Wandin since 2010 and to win their first ever B Grade premiership. Woori Yallock Best: Lauren VanDerWesthuizen (AFL Yarra Ranges ‘Best on Court’ Medallist), Mia Sudomirski, Heidi Summers Monbulk Hawks Best: Olivia Crook, Megan Coad, Sara Zachariah Division 1 C Grade Woori Yallock 36 d Wandin 28 Woori Yallock led from the outset to be the first side to beat Wandin’s C Grade in a grand final since 2014, and to record their first C Grade premiership. Woori Yallock got the early lead by five goals in the first quarter after shooting 10 goals to five. Woori Yallock maintained control in the second term and extended their lead to nine goals at half-time. Wandin rallied in the third quarter and outscored Woori Yallock by two goals, meaning the lead was reduced to seven goals at three-quarter time. Seven goals is a big margin to claw back and, as tight as the last quarter was, Woori Yallock’s lead was too great. Woori Yallock Best: Kimberley

Williams (AFL Yarra Ranges ‘Best on Court’ Medalist), Ellie Van Der Westhuizen, Jordan Kennedy Wandin Best: Alanna Lennie, Ciara Lumsden, Tess Fowkes Division 1 D Grade Olinda Ferny Creek 31 d Wandin 24 Olinda Ferny Creek have been crowned 2017 premiers after a seven-goal win over reigning premiers Wandin. The first quarter was tight with Olinda getting the slimmest of leads by one-goal. They certainly broke the game open in the second term, shooting 10 goals to three, and it was going to be tough for Wandin to claw this back. Wandin came out and outscored Olinda by a single goal in the third quarter in what was a low-scoring quarter but the margin was still seven goals. Neither side gave an inch in the last as they both shot eight goals and Olinda saluted the judges at the final siren. Olinda Ferny Creek Best: Leah Cody (AFL Yarra Ranges ‘Best on Court’ Medalist), Casey Seymour, Nicole Millwood Wandin Best: Emily Corbett, Alicia Kay, Lauren Ball 17 and under netball Grand final (Saturday 23 September) Woori Yallock 39 d Wandin 32 Woori Yallock has defeated reigning premiers Wandin by seven goals to record their first premiership in the 17 and under Competition. The first quarter was an even, tight tussle but Wandin held a one-goal lead at quarter time. The second term was high scoring with 23 goals being shot and Woori Yallock outscored them by three to take a lead of two goals at half-time. Woori Yallock continued with that momentum in the third quarter and increased their lead to four goals at three-quarter time. Wandin could not manage the pressure in the last term; Woori Yallock ran out the game, and is premiers for 2017. Woori Yallock Best: Abbie Barnes (AFL Yarra Ranges ‘Best on Court’ Medallist), Madeline Hargrave, Mia Sudomirski Wandin Best: Madison Rouget, Cleo Minney, Olivia Speelmeyer

Motoring Win with Motorclassica

This is a rare opportunity to view a collection of classics at the one venue. In addition to a tribute display inside the Exhibition Building as the featured marque in the Concours d’Elegance, the Ferrari Club will also bring 70 cars to mark this very special anniversary for display in the Club Sandwich on the Saturday. Another major feature of Motorclassica 2017 will be marking 100 years since the first Holden-bodied car was made in Australia, decades before General Motors started making Holden branded cars here. The bitter-sweet celebration coincides with the closure of Holden’s local manufacturing facility. Along with showcasing Holden car making and design, the very first Australian-built Holden 48/215 (FX) prototype from 1948 will be shown, along with three significant concept cars from its history, including the EFIJY and Hurricane, plus a unique display of all eight generations of Australianmade Commodores, the first time such a tribute has been assembled. And to put it all into perspective, Holden has chosen Motorclassica to reveal to the public for the very first time its first fully-imported 2018 Commodore model. Tying in perfectly with the national Lancia Rally, Motorclassica will also pay tribute to 110 years of this innovative Italian marque with a number of iconic Lancia rally cars in original race livery, accompanied by a display of very rare models including one of just two 1947 Lancia Aprila Spyder Grans-

And in something a little different, Motorclassica will recognise Australia’s status as the first country outside the USA to race speedway and celebrate these vintage years with a display of speedway midgets from the 1930s to 1960s. The Australian International Con-

cours d’Elegance will see the country’s premier classic and collector cars and motorcycles competing in multiple classes for the most prestigious show awards on the calendar, while more than 30 collector cars will go under the hammer when Mossgreen conducts the annual Motorclassica auction. Ever popular, the Lorbek Luxury Cars supported Club Sandwich will

see more than 200 car and motorcycle club members attend to display and talk about their vehicles in the areas adjacent to the beautiful Royal Exhibition Building. Motorclassica’s official charity for 2017 is the Peter MacCallum Cancer Foundation. Tickets for Motorclassica 2017 are on sale at: www.motorclassica.com.au

In conjunction with Motorclassica, the Mail News Group is giving readers a chance to win one of five double-passes to the high-octane event. To enter, all you need to do is email through your name, address and contact details to win@mailnewsgroup. com.au. Australia’s premier classic and collector car exhibition, Motorclassica, is set to shine in its eighth year with its largest array of special features yet, when the doors open at Melbourne’s Royal Exhibition Building from Friday 13 October to Sunday 15 October. Motorclassica is Australia’s most prestigious automotive event, uniquely mixing rare, exotic and collectable cars and motorcycles from around the world with the latest contemporary high-end sports and performance models. “Eight years on it feels like Motorclassica is now firmly established on the annual Australian events calendar and is the go-to event for automotive enthusiasts,” Motorclassica event director Paul Mathers said. “For Motorclassica attendees, we annually assemble the very best entries for the Concours, we are oversubscribed with cars for display both inside the venue and outside in the Club Sandwich arena, and we have a number of key automotive manufacturers revealing new products or celebrating significant milestones. “Motorclassica 2017 is going to be hugely exciting because it will combine the very best of all of these elements. It’s already clear this is going to be a very special and memorable show.” Motorclassica 2017 will again play host to ever-popular features such as the Australian International Concours D’Elegance, the daily Club Sandwich car club displays, the VIP Lounge for entrants and special guests, and the Saturday evening Classic Car Auction, conducted this year for the first time by Mossgreen. It all begins with the annual Tour Classica, which will see Motorclassica cars convoy from Alexandra Gardens on the banks of the Yarra River, through the Melbourne CBD to the world-heritage listed Royal Exhibition Building on Thursday 12 October. A major highlight of Motorclassica 2017 will be a celebration of Ferrari’s 70th birthday, one of only a select number of events officially supported and sanctioned by the Ferrari factory in Maranello, Italy.
