Start your plan By Derek Schlennstedt The CFA is warning of a long, dry fire season and is urging Yarra Ranges residents to start planning now. With parts of NSW already affected by bushfire, indicators suggest the fire danger period might be declared earlier this year, as conditions point to a dangerous summer. The warning comes after Victoria experienced its driest winter since 2006, and Emergency Services Commissioner, Craig Lapsley, said the bushfire risk would now depend upon the rainfall Victoria received in spring. “The severity of the fire season will depend on a number of factors, including the amount, location and timing of rain in the months leading up to summer,” Commissioner Lapsley said. “The early forecast shows there is underlying dryness in some areas of the state, particularly across central parts of Victoria and across the east. “While there is a lot of surface water, which means there will be grass growth and a healthy supply of water for crop growing, ground moisture has the potential to dry out quickly under dry and warm conditions. “The level of risk ... will still depend on how much spring rain there is in September.” Summer season preparations across the Yarra Ranges are already well underway, with local brigades and agencies undertaking planned burns. District 13 Operations Manager, Don Tomkins shared Commissioner Lapsley’s concerns and said that even despite recent rain, residents across the region lived in a fire-prone area and therefore should always be prepared for the summer fire season. “The information that we’ve been given indicates that we could potentially have an earlier fire season than traditional times, however we do live in a fire-prone area so it is about being prepared - there will be a fire season in some shape or form,“ he said. “Fire agencies are already going into planned burning phases and obviously while we do this, private landowners also need to take responsibility and clean up their land.” Though preparations may not completely prevent fires from occurring, improvements in facilities by the government ensures fires are extinguished as soon as they are reported to fire services.
Mr Tomkins said one of the most pleasing aspects of this year’s fire season preparations had been the Victorian Government investment in fire-fighting aircraft. Overall, 49 aircraft will be on hand this fire season, including two large air tankers and two orange air-cranes - similar to the existing ‘Elvis’ Erickson air-cranes - will be part of the $13.42 million fleet lease this year.
“The biggest aircraft fleet we’ve seen, with more aircraft than previous seasons,” Mr Tomkins said. “It’s certainly beneficial ... aircraft can be dispatched at a certain trigger mark together with the brigade to get in there early, and hopefully assist us in getting on top of the fire early.” With fire services playing their part to reduce fuel loads, Mr Tomkins said the onus was now on residents and said it was important for communi-
ties to work together and help one another and utilise the information available to them via the CFA websites and apps. “We know there will be a fire season and it’s making sure we are all prepared,” he said. “You can approach local brigades or our community safety department - our district can provide a lot of information to enable people to become prepared for the forthcoming fire season.”
Feel free to touch Fiddle Rugs are all the rage and with over 700 items given away, and two Fiddle Rug exhibitions at Seville Community House in recent years, it’s no wonder that more exhibitions are on the way. Far from the ‘Do Not Touch’ message promoted at most art exhibitions, visitors to the Fiddle Rug Exhibition are invited to stroke the exhibits, the aim of which is to give pleasure to seniors with dementia and children and young adults with intellectual disabilities. The next Fiddle Rug Exhibition will be at Mont de Lancey Historic Homestead from 18 to 29 October. Picture: ROB CAREW

Shop break-in Between 6pm September 22, and 6am September 23, Terry's Meats on Bryce Avenue, Mooroolbark was broken into. It is believed the offenders forced a glass panel at the bottom of the door to gain entrance and stole a sum of cash. Anyone with information is urged to contact Lilydale Crime Investigation Unit on 9739 2300.

a win for the community, a win for Australia and a win for the planet.” Looking to the longer term, Healesville CoRE has commenced talks with Enova Community Energy to explore ways in which a community based power retailer could be established. The hope, says Jeff, is to give the community some control over its energy production and consumption and retain money in the community rather than send it to overseas shareholders.
Healesville CoRE is looking forward to hosting a visit on 2 November from energy efficiency expert Alan Pears. He will talk about conserving energy in the home and how to reduce energy consumption and bills. More information will be available closer to the date. For further information about Healesville CoRE email contact@ healesvillecore.org.au. New members are always welcome.
the houses and their application of renewable energy systems. Several visitors were inspired to sign up to Healesville CoRE. Small scale renewable projects on houses, churches, schools - will be the initial focus of Healesville CoRE. The group envisages assisting through the provision of expertise and perhaps bulk buys of solar panels. “We want as many people as possible to benefit,” said Jeff Barlow. “(It will be) a win for the individuals,
Platypus with a plan for survival By Derek Schlennstedt To ensure the survival of platypus in Victorian waterways, the Andrews Labor Government is calling on citizen scientists to help monitor and track their activity via new eDNA technology. Community water sampling by citizen scientists will be used to capture ‘environmental DNA’ (eDNA) which will help Melbourne Water to locate platypuses and increase their knowledge about their health and where they live. The eDNA sampling system makes use of the platypuses' natural ability to shed cells from their bodies into the water, which then remains present for several weeks after. Once gathered, the data will help guide further environmental works to ensure the waterways around Victoria are free from rubbish, nets or spills that could reduce platypus numbers. This is a key part of the Labor Government’s plan to improve the
New eDNA Technology will help to protect the elusive platypus. Picture: JESSE GRAHAM health of the Yarra River through the Yarra Strategic Plan and Yarra Protection Bill and Minister for Water Lisa Neville said it was a step in the right direction to help to protect this special Australian species. “All of us can now play a part in protecting and better understanding these amazing animals - I urge all
Victorians to get involved,” Minister Neville said. “It’s important we all work together to prevent this iconic Australian native animal from extinction, ensure our waterways are healthy and a place where native animals can thrive.” While the species has not yet
reached endangered status, in 2014 it was declared ‘near threatened’ and there is evidence that the platypus is not thriving as it once was. More work is needed to detect the species within waterways to determine how many are left in local rivers and streams, which will also correlate with the health of local waterways. With platypuses being more active in spring, now is the perfect time to track platypus activity. The Centre for Environmental Stress and Adaptation Research (CESAR) already discovered platypuses at 81 sites across 50 per cent of the waterways they investigated and results showed platypus were most widespread in the Yarra catchment, followed by Western Port and Maribyrnong, but were restricted in Werribee and Dandenong catchments. To become a citizen scientist and help track the platypus, download the PlatypusSPOT app and head to melbournewater.com.au.
Brakes failed An 18-year-old on his probationary licence collided with a house on Yarra Glen's Bell Street at 4am on 16 September after his brakes failed. The driver was travelling east on Symonds Street and was approaching the intersection when the brakes failed and he careened into a house that was under construction on Bell Street. His car, a Toyota Corolla was towed from the site and by his own admission the driver was charged with speeding and given a ticket. Leading Senior Constable Wayne Phillips at Yarra Glen Police said that while brake failure added to the car crashing, a lack of knowledge of what to do under those circumstances meant the driver was unable to respond in time.
New Highway Patrol vehicles will be BMWs Victoria Police Highway Patrol will replace their Ford Falcon and Holden Commodore V8 pursuit cars with a fleet of turbo diesel BMW 5 Series sedans from next year. Vicpol has confirmed that BMW will provide up to 80 of its 530d sedans to be used as highway patrol cars starting early 2018. With the end of local production of the Falcon last year - and the Commodore reaching the end of the line next month - police divisions across Australia have had to source new cars for the highway patrol. BMW is one of the few car manufacturers globally to make vehicles specifically for police work. Police in Germany, Italy and the UK also use BMW sedans for highway patrol duties. The BMW has acceleration and braking to match the Falcon and Commodore - yet uses half as much fuel as a Commodore V8 and has more advanced safety technology. BMW has stripped the car back to basics and it is purpose-built for highway patrol work.

By Wendy Williamson Healesville Community Renewable Energy Project (CoRE) is forging ahead with its focus on equitably delivering renewable energy projects to the community. Achieving incorporation to make it easier to apply for grants is the next step for the group, which got off to a great start with a very well attended community gathering at The Memo in Healesville on 29 June. “The attendance of 225-250 community members, with standing room only for latecomers, really says a lot about the interest in renewable energy in our town,” said Jeff Barlow, who called the meeting and is Healesville CoRE’s interim chair. Thirty-six people have now formed a working group which meets fortnightly, with a similar number of volunteers in a broader Community Volunteers Group and a dozen or so professionals contributing their expertise in an Expert Reference Group. On Sunday 17 September Healesville CoRE enthusiastically supported the Alternative Technology Association’s Sustainable House Day. Four local sustainable houses were on display as part of this national event. They included an underground house in Steels Creek, two off-grid straw bale homes at Moora Moora Co-op on Mt Toolebewong, and a prototype off-grid tiny house from iCue Homes on display in the industrial estate in Healesville. There was great interest in seeing how passive heating and cooling was incorporated into the design of

senses more heightened and can be irritating; these should be limited or avoided if your stress levels are too high. Choosing foods that soothe your nervous system will be beneficial. You want to increase essential nutrients like calcium, magnesium and B vitamins. Seeds, nuts, leafy green vegetable and fresh sprouts contain these nutrients and when eaten on a daily basis they will feed and nourish your nervous system giving you calmer disposition. For those who can tolerate whole grains brown rice, oats and barley are excellent choices also. Take the time to stop working while you take your meals. You have to rest to digest and continuing to do your work is an excellent way to acquire indigestion, it will also reduce nutrient absorption which is something you want to increase in times of stress. So take your lunch outside and share meals with family and friends rather than sitting in front of the box. These are some effective and DIY strategies to help your body in times of stress. Please be mindful that if you have been suffering a stressrelated condition for some time, it may be best to seek help from a qualified health professional.

WHY RENT?
Your nervous system plays an important role in your physical and psychological well-being by virtue of regulating your stress responses. Essentially, there are two main branches of this system - the parasympathetic which is involuntary and slows our heart rate, increases digestive and immune related activity and the sympathetic, which is our fight or flight response, driving our adrenals and increasing heart rate. Unfortunately, many people find themselves in adrenal overdrive, all too often making them feel worse and generally tired. I’d like to share with you a few practical tips that can help switch your nervous system from sympathetic to parasympathetic so that your system has regular opportunities to rest and replenish. I guarantee you’ll feel much better for it. Excessive stimulation of your adrenals can result in many health-related problems. It will lower your immune defences, affect your digestion
and raise your blood pressure to name just a few. If you have trouble switching off at the end of the day, it may have something to do with your nervous system being stuck in sympathetic overdrive. Over time, this can result in night sweats, lower back pain, increased stress and anxiety the feeling of being ‘wired and tired’. Here are some things you can try that will nourish your nervous system rather than exacerbating the problem by more stimulation. Take up regular meditation or yoga class, or consider tai chi. These practices place strong emphasis of cultivating awareness of our breathing. Learning to breathe deeply and fully will slow your heart rate and switch your nervous system to parasympathetic mode. It’s a technique that doesn’t cost you a penny and can be used frequently throughout your day. Shiatsu and massage therapies that are gentle and nonmanipulative are beneficial in calming an overly stressed mind. The foods and how you eat will affect your nervous system also. Stimulants like coffee, alcohol and sugar will make your

Joe and Maria Bast’s first trip to India in 1999 changed their lives. “But, if it just changes our life, it is not enough,” Joe said of the experience that has seen the Wandin couple, Joe, 82 and Maria, 80, return to the land and people they love for 12 years in a row. “We decided to do our very best to change other people’s lives in India,” he said. And they have. Their latest project to raise money for the programs they supported through the Leprosy Mission was to renovate an old caravan, which they were excited to announce had just sold on ebay. Leprosy continues to affect millions of people around the world, with hundreds of thousands of new diagnoses every year and a lack of knowledge and understanding which leads to isolation and stigma. Leprosy is now curable and within 48 hours of being treated, the patient is non-contagious. Jo said however that the misconception that it was spread by contact persisted. “We have been hugging leprosy patients since we first went to India, but the stigma attached to it is still far too great,” he said. Training daughters of leprosy and HIV-affected parents to become midwives and nurses is addressing that stigma and creating opportunities for girls who would otherwise have very little chance in life. Joe said the stigma suffered by each generation transferred to the next. “This is where we are working to get people to look at it from a different point of view,” he explained. “Once they become nurses, they

There’s a bear in there Teddies are precious and they deserve lots of love, care and special attention - just like the wildlife at Healesville Sanctuary! So that makes the zoos the ideal place for teddy vet checks. During the spring school holidays, kids are invited to meet the special teddy check teams and find out about the care that is needed to look after their lovable friends as well as the care the sanctuary’s animals receive, too.
Dr Hart and the volunteer teddy doctors will be attending and mending all sorts of patients in the Australian Wildlife Health Centre from plush wombats, to giraffes and gorillas. Kids too can become a vet, and diagnose their teddy and then of course bandage them up so they are ready to be played with and then kids can grab their teddy vet check certificate to take home and hang on the wall. Teddies of course play a
special role in our lives and the teddy vet checks are the perfect way to nurture children’s kindness for other beings, whether human, animal or teddy bear. The complimentary teddy vet checks will be offered every day of the spring school holidays, from 11am to 3pm, with patients receiving a free Teddy Vet Check certificate for their brave teddy to take home.
Har vey talk The artistic Harvey family will be the subject of the Yarra Glen and District Historical Society’s ninth annual Tetlow Talk on Sunday 8 October. Margo Heeley (nee Harvey) will accompany her talk, ‘Attention to detail - a family of artists,’ with plenty of quality illustrations. World War I veteran Bruce Harvey was a graphic artist from the 1920s to the late 1960s. His wife, Eveline Harvey, was a woman in a man’s world. Despite criticism in the Great Depression and World War II, she pursued a graphic arts career for 65 years from the 1920s.
Margo said of her mother: “Her talent and the need to support her family during very hard times won out, and she produced many well-known designs for Monbulk Preserves Ltd, IXL, Carlton and United Breweries, Sands and McDougall, cigarette companies and others.” In the 1960s Eveline Harvey designed the Crown Lager bottle and label. George Harvey, one of the sons of Bruce and Eveline, is a builder and wood craftsman. Another son is Roland Harvey, cartoonist, children’s book illustrator and author. Daughter Margo is a book illustrator and botanical artist with a particular interest in
plants indigenous to the Yarra Valley, where she lives. She will deliver the ninth annual Tetlow Talk at 2.30pm on Sunday 8 October in the McCoomb Room, Yarra Glen Memorial Hall. Anyone is welcome to attend. Yarra Glen and District Historical Society established the annual Tetlow Talks in 2009 to honour the memory of longtime member Eric Tetlow, a former secretary and treasurer of the society and a passionate history enthusiast. Afternoon tea will follow the talk. Please RSVP for catering purposes. Contact Helen Mann on 0429 006 152 or Jill Sheffield on 9730 1587.
Everyone requires some TLC at some point and while Healesville Sanctuary’s first priority is animals, its second is taking care of toys, specifically teddy bears.

The Rocky Road Choir met for the last time in Healesville’s St Brigid’s Hall last Wednesday, 20 September. Many were sad to see the demise of a choir which for nine years has provided an opportunity for people to sing together in an atmosphere of fun and friendship. Despite this, the dozen or so in attendance still managed to muster the spirit to join together in song under the leadership of effervescent musician Leah Marlowe. Afterwards the choristers enjoyed a shared afternoon tea and reminisced about the good times. It was back in August 2008 that the Rocky Road Choir formed as a partnership between EACH Rivendell and Reclink Australia. Initially it met in the supper rooms of Healesville’s Memorial Hall. Since then, with the help of some Yarra Ranges Shire community development grant funding, the choir has met regularly on Wednesday afternoons during school terms and performed at various community venues. No audition was required for the singers, predominantly women, but together they produced a lovely sound, as the Mail was lucky enough to hear last Wednesday. The choir’s repertoire was extensive, ranging in musical style and tradition. From chants and rounds to songs in two and threepart harmony, the emphasis was on songs which inspire and energise, warm the heart and lift the spirit. The choir certainly warmed lots of hearts, said choir co-ordinator Mitzi Davison. “We have had to call it a day because numbers have been dwindling and it has become harder to get funding. “We’re all sad that it is over, but it has had a great, positive influence on a lot of people over the last nine years. We brought a lot of joy to a lot of people.”

From the shiniest coat to the waggiest tail, there were dogs of all kinds at the spring celebrations.
Volunteers at Animal Aid's spring celebrations played a key part in managing the 600 people who attended.
Animal lovers have a ball By Derek Schlennstedt From the shiniest coat to the waggiest tail, dogs, cats and all manner of animals and people celebrated spring and the opening of Animals Aid’s new facilities over the weekend. The event on 24 September was an opportunity for animal lovers to come together and celebrate those special life companions, come together they did, with around 600 people and pooches enjoying the sunshine. Throughout the day, various competitions were held from choosing the ‘waggiest tail’, to finding the gentlest giant which included a number of towering Great Danes. The celebrations also acted as an opportunity for Animal Aid to show-off their newest facilities, and the animal welfare organisation unveiled its boarding and grooming facilities. “We unveiled 52 new state-of-the-art indoor boarding kennels which can be fully heated in winter and fully cooled in summer,” Community Engagement manager, Elle Ammann said. On the day, three lovable pups were aldo adopted to their forever homes, and Elle said the entire day was amazing and thanked volunteers for their incredible contribution in running the event. “There were heaps of dogs around and heaps of people, plenty of games to play - a scavenger hunt, pin the tail on the pooch, a photo booth, sausage sizzle ... it was just a really great atmosphere,” she said.

Established in 1985, the Yarra Glen and District Living and Learning Centre aims to provide a place for people to come together in an atmosphere of equality, to share their skills and experiences, and to enjoy each other’s companionship. The centre has served the community for more than 32 years, providing various health and wellness classes, work-life-balance through special interest workshops, and facilitating skill development across the wider community through program initiatives. As manager of the Centre Debra Traill explained there is always something happening at the community hub. “Landscape work for our Edible Forest Community Garden has begun and we are excited about the new opportunities this will bring for our community,” Debra said. “Our garden will enable the centre to offer additional training topics related to garden, food and eco-systems that will develop knowledge and skill levels of community and give community a feeling of security in their future food production needs.”. The centre is also busy organising two events scheduled for October to celebrate the Victorian Seniors Festival. Working in partnership with the Yarra Glen Seniors group, the first event is The A-Z of Rock ‘n’ Roll show with ‘Cheek to Cheek’ to be held on Tuesday 24 October from 10am to 11am. Dylanesque returns to Healesville.
Bob Dylan tribute does justice One of Healesville’s finest exports, Jeff Jenkins, is returning for a hometown gig, ready to rock The Memo on Saturday 21 October. Jenkins will bring his hugely popular show DYLANesque to the region in a special one-off concert. So, why not enjoy a brilliant Saturday night out, with a more than twohour narrated concert that explores the life, times and music of one of the 20th
century’s most lauded songwriters, Bob Dylan. The much-loved show has earned high praise from the best in the industry, including top Australian music journalist Glenn A Baker, who saw the show in Sydney recently. He said the show really struck a chord with him. “Jeff Jenkins not only sounds like ‘His Bobness’, but he understands him,
even inhabits him,” he wrote in a review of the show. “DYLANesque was one of the most engaging and enjoyable couple of hours I’ve spend in ages.” Also, ABC radio listeners will recall Lindy Burns saying on air how Jeff Jenkins sounds uncannily like Bob and eerily similar, and what a remarkably talented band he’s playing with. It’s one of those shows that ticks
all the boxes - it’s a biography of Dylan’s life from when he started out as a young 19-year-old busking in New York, exploring his various relationships, his constant reinvention of himself, plus it has all the big hits that gets the audience singing along. The show includes great story telling with a good dose of tongue in cheek humour, and it has that feel good factor - audiences come away on a high.
Jenkins said, “It’s a good feeling to be turning people on to Dylan, people who before seeing the show might have felt they weren’t fans of his. It’s such an accessible show, and I love feeling we’re spreading the word, the word according to Bob.” The show starts at 7.30pm, so grab your tickets early to get the best seats. For more information, visit www. dylanesque.com.au.
Moronic special event bringing the electricity After impressing audiences nationally, high-energy rock musical show ‘The Island of Doctor Moron’ will be screened at a special event at the Cameo Cinema in Belgrave on Friday 29 September. The show has been described as ‘Rocky Horror Show on steroids’ and has been screening to soldout audiences since its launch in March last year.
Producer Chris Dockrill calls it a ‘hybrid film’ of the live show of the same name. “Everyone loves it. Some people returned to see the live show up to seven times. Viewers have also returned to see the film many times,” Dockrill said. Audiences for the live show and film have ranged from seven to 96 years old, with screen-

Mother! is an ambitious, beautiful and harrowing misfire. A housewife (Jennifer Lawrence) becomes increasingly frustrated as her poet husband (Javier Bardem) invites droves of people to stay in their secluded mansion. Mother! was both intriguing and aggravating from its first moments. Much of the cinematography consists of hand-held camerawork combined with extreme close-ups, which makes the first half feel very artificial, and Mother! lacks a
sane starting-point for the drama to truly catch us off-guard. The performances are riveting, and Mother! generates an extremely unnerving atmosphere even before the morbid carnage of the climax, but the intended allegory is very muddled. Mother! is full of Biblical symbolism, with the narrative essentially presenting a stylised, condensed history of Christianity. Representing God (through Bardem’s poet character) as a narcissistic artist obsessed with adulation isn’t a bad interpretation of the Old Testament God, and I initially took the ‘Mother’ character
(Lawrence) to be a redemptive, empowered version of Lilith, a persecuted, littleknown figure from Jewish folklore. But director Darren Aronofsky has explicitly framed Mother as ‘Mother Nature’, with Mother’s distress and trauma symbolising our exploitation and destruction of the Earth. This is an abstract, contrived stretch, and is very incongruous with the often heavy-handed Biblical metaphor. We’re ultimately left with a film full of bloody shock value and allegorical weight that, while morbidly captivating on the surface, says very little.

Grand final fever Sports fans in the Yarra Ranges were buzzing with excitement over the weekend, with AFL Yarra Ranges grand final action at Yarra Glen proving to be an intense scene. Olinda routs Woori Yallock By Cameron Hutchison Division 1 (Seniors) Grand final (Saturday 23 September) Olinda Ferny Creek 18.17(125) d Woori Yallock 3.6(24) Olinda Ferny Creek are the 2017 premiers, and are celebrating their first Division 1 premiership. The game started off with both sides testing each other out and getting used to the windy conditions. Olinda had seven scoring shots to four but both sides only kicked a single goal in the first quarter and Olinda had a slim lead by three points. Olinda acclimatised to the conditions quickly and piled on 6.1 to only three behinds in the second term, and it looked like it was going to be a tough day for Woori Yallock trailing Olinda by 37 points at the main break. Wind or not, Olinda had no trouble and kicked another 6.5 in the third quarter to Woori Yallock’s two goals and the margin had blown out to 66 points at three-quarter time. Woori Yallock had no answers for Olinda’s dominance and could not get their game going at all during the day. The celebrations would have started early, but Olinda put on a clinic in the last term, holding Woori Yallock scoreless and peppered the goals with 5.5 to make the final margin a massive 101 points. Olinda Ferny Creek Best: N. Broomhall (AFL VIC ‘Best on Ground’ Medalist), L. Hill, D. Fitzgerald, M. Hottes, J. Charge, B. Walter Woori Yallock Best: R. Allen, J. Adams, S. Kennedy, C. Smedley, L. Division 1 Reserves Grand Final (Saturday 23 September) Wandin 8.6(54) d Olinda Ferny Creek 7.10(52) Olinda Ferny Creek were playing for back-to-back premierships but were outclassed by a more desperate side in Wandin who have won the 2017 reserves premiership. Olinda started strongly kicking 4.2 to two goals to take a lead of 14 points into the second quarter, and it looked like it was going to be Olinda’s day. Wandin made the most of the wind in the second quarter and jumped Olinda, kicking 3.3 to one behind to take the lead back by six points at half-time. The third term was a torrid 20 minutes of football with Olinda, kicking 2.3 to Wandin’s 1.1 and the lead was Olinda’s just by two points at the final break. This game went right down to the wire - Wandin kicked 2.2 and as much as Olinda peppered the goals, kicking 1.4; they could not jag any majors and Wandin came away with a nail-biting two-point win

Under 18s Grand final (Saturday 23 September) Wandin 6.9(45) d Emerald 6.8(44) Wandin have come away with a surprise one-point win over Emerald and have been crowned the under 18s premiers for 2017. The first quarter was tight as both sides battled for some sort of ascendency. Wandin kicked 1.2 to 1.1 to take a slim lead at quarter-time. Emerald played the blustery conditions well in the second term and kicked away with 2.4 to three behinds to have a lead of 12 points at half-time. Wandin came out in the third quarter and dominated all facets of the game, kicking 4.3 to zip; however, the game was still theirs to lose with a 15-point lead at three-quarter time. Emerald had the aid of the breeze in the last and kicked 3.3, but Wandin battled hard and managed to kick 1.1 against the odds, sneaking home with a one-point win.
Wandin Best: T. Merlino (AFL VIC ‘Best on Ground’ Medalist), P. Bruzzese, A. Baker, T. Smith, M. Smith, B. Stokes Emerald Best: M. Thomas, C. Roma, K. Jordan-Hill, J. Campsell, A. Stuhldreier, B. Division 1 A Grade Olinda Ferny Creek 69 d Woori Yallock 53 Olinda Ferny Creek have been crowned minor premiers and the 2017 champions after a good win over Woori Yallock. Olinda got the jump, shooting 17 goals to 11 in the first quarter and was never really challenged from there as the lead was always going to be a big chase for Woori Yallock. The second term was much tighter, and it was a bit of a goal shooting clinic with 33 goals being shot, but the lead was still Olinda’s by seven goals. Olinda took hold of the game well and truly in the third quarter, shooting 18 goals to 12 and the lead was now 17 with one quarter to go. Again, the fourth term was a tight contest but Olinda had all the answers and is premiers for 2017. Olinda Ferny Creek Best: Peri Stewart (Anita Woods ‘Best on Court’ Medalist), Krista Tomlinson, Georgia Martin
Division 1 B Grade Woori Yallock 39 d Monbulk Hawks 25 Woori Yallock has been crowned minor premiers and the 2017 champions after a win over Monbulk Hawks. The first quarter was tight and it looked like the game was going to be tough from the outset. It was eight-all at quarter-time, with no side giving an inch. Woori Yallock took control in the second term shooting 15 goals to six and set up a handy half- time lead by nine goals. It all tightened up in the third quarter and it was a low-scoring one with only nine goals being shot, but Monbulk could not make any inroads into Woori Yallock’ lead of 10 goals. Woori Yallock played out the last term with an advantage of four goals, and have been the first team to beat Wandin since 2010 and to win their first ever B Grade premiership. Woori Yallock Best: Lauren VanDerWesthuizen (AFL Yarra Ranges ‘Best on Court’ Medallist), Mia Sudomirski, Heidi Summers Monbulk Hawks Best: Olivia Crook, Megan Coad, Sara Zachariah Woori Yallock Goal Shooters: Heidi Summers 21, Madeline Hargrave 18 Monbulk Hawks Goal Shooters: Tahlia Northey 16, Megan Coad 6, Olivia Crook 3
Division 1 C Grade Woori Yallock 36 d Wandin 28 Woori Yallock led from the outset to be the first side to beat Wandin’s C Grade in a grand final since 2014, and to record their first C Grade premiership. Woori Yallock got the early lead by five goals in the first quarter after shooting 10 goals to five. Woori Yallock maintained control in the second term and extended their lead to nine goals at half-time. Wandin rallied in the third quarter and outscored Woori Yallock by two goals, meaning the
lead was reduced to seven goals at three-quarter time. Seven goals is a big margin to claw back and, as tight as the last quarter was, Woori Yallock’s lead was too great. Woori Yallock Best: Kimberley Williams (AFL Yarra Ranges ‘Best on Court’ Medalist), Ellie Van Der Westhuizen, Jordan Kennedy Wandin Best: Alanna Lennie, Ciara Lumsden, Tess Fowkes Woori Yallock Goal Shooters: Jordan Kennedy 20, Abbie Barnes 16. Wandin Goal Shooters: Holly McInerney 21, Brooke Smith 7 Division 1 D Grade Olinda Ferny Creek 31 d Wandin 24 Olinda Ferny Creek have been crowned 2017 premiers after a seven-goal win over reigning premiers Wandin. The first quarter was tight with Olinda getting the slimmest of leads by one-goal. They certainly broke the game open in the second term, shooting 10 goals to three, and it was going to be tough for Wandin to claw this back. Wandin came out and outscored Olinda by a single goal in the third quarter in what was a low-scoring quarter but the margin was still seven goals. Neither side gave an inch in the last as they both shot eight goals and Olinda saluted the judges at the final siren. Olinda Ferny Creek Best: Leah Cody (AFL Yarra Ranges ‘Best on Court’ Medalist), Casey Seymour, Nicole Millwood Wandin Best: Emily Corbett, Alicia Kay, Lauren Ball Olinda Ferny Creek Goal Shooters: Nicole Millwood 23, Michelle Tomlinson 8 Wandin Goal Shooters: Chloe Dickson 13, Alicia Kay 10, Danielle Wolff 1
17 and under netball Grand final (Saturday 23 September) Woori Yallock 39 d Wandin 32 Woori Yallock has defeated reigning premiers Wandin by seven goals to record their first premiership in the 17 and under Competition. The first quarter was an even, tight tussle but Wandin held a one-goal lead at quarter time. The second term was high scoring with 23 goals being shot and Woori Yallock outscored them by three to take a lead of two goals at half-time. Woori Yallock continued with that momentum in the third quarter and increased their lead to four goals at three-quarter time. Wandin could not manage the pressure in the last term; Woori Yallock ran out the game, and is premiers for 2017. Woori Yallock Best: Abbie Barnes (AFL Yarra Ranges ‘Best on Court’ Medallist), Madeline Hargrave, Mia Sudomirski Wandin Best: Madison Rouget, Cleo Minney, Olivia Speelmeyer Woori Yallock Goal Shooters: Madeline Hargrave 27, Abbie Barnes 12 Wandin Goal Shooters: Cailey Nolan 15, Olivia Speelmeyer 13, Sophie Hennessey 4

Barratt wins on a countback
Memorial event shot By John Wood WOODS POINT GUN CLUB A cold day greeted the competitors at the Woods Point Gun Club for the Maori Creek Championships and the Jodie Poile Memorial shoot. A bit of a breeze and occasional showers kept the scores low but did not dampen the competition. In the Eye Opener, Mick Ward won AA Grade outright with 29/30 while Daniel Chinn won A Grade with 30/30. Tony Armstrong took the B Grade cash with 30/30 while C Grade was shared by Shawn Wood and John Winters, 27/30. The first event was the Maori Creek 25 target Continental sponsored by John and Maxine Winters of Phudleys Jewellers. Mick Ward continued his strong start to take the Championship sash and the AA Grade prize with a clean 25/25 to add to his impressive collection. In the AA Grade shoot-off, Phillip Desmond beat Trevor Ewert for second place, 25/27. A Grade saw Daniel Chinn and Ian Findlay go head to head with Chinn taking A first, 33/34 to Findlay second, 33/34. Armstrong again put in a strong performance to take B Grade 24/26 after a short shoot off against Laurie Poile second, 23/26. John Winter’s 31/33 won him C Grade with John Legge second, 30/33. After a warm and hearty lunch we launched into the Maori Creek 20 pair Deauville Doubles with team partners drawn randomly. Fairly constant rain made shooting
Pictured from left: Trevor Ewert with son Lachie, Nick Alimac, Mick Ward, Daniel Chinn, Shawn Wood, John Winters and Laurie Poile (sponsors). 173274 conditions uncomfortable but Chinn and Wood managed the best score of 18/20 pairs to take the event outright. Ian Findlay and Legge took second place, 19/22 after a shoot off with the Michael Bevis/Mick Ward team, third 18/22. Two of the oldies, Dave Hoon and Frank Balcombe, won the fourth place prizes, 15/20 pairs. John and Maxine Winters also sponsored this event. The day ended with the Jodie Poile 25 target Double Barrel Memorial Championship sponsored by Jodie’s husband, Daniel Poile, and Daniel’s parents, Laurie and Jo Poile. Jodie was a vivacious young woman
from the Upper Yarra who passed way in 2016 and left many happy memories in the lives of all who knew her. This memorial event was fiercely contested but at the end Trevor Ewert shot the only perfect 25/25 to wear the sash. Trevor also won the AA Grade prize with Mick Ward second, 28/29. There were shoot offs for all of the other grades as well with Ian Findlay and Daniel Chinn taking A Grade first and second, 41/42 to 40/42 respectively. In B Grade, Geoff Hill, 26/27 beat Tony Armstrong 25/27 while C Grade had Michael Bevis winning, 30/32, from Shawn Wood, 29/32.

The Heritage Family
A new young shooter, Nick Alimac, showed real potential by returning 20/25 in this event. At the presentations, Ewert after a gracious speech gave the Memorial Sash to Kirsten Chinn who was a lifelong friend and best buddy of Jodie Poile. There was hardly a dry eye in the clubroom. Ward also won the Peter and Ellen West sponsored High Gun sash, 74/79, while at the other end of the spectrum Wayne Poole won Rob Bevis Low Gun with 43/70. Next shoot at Woods Point is the Bernie Elstrek Memorial Championships on Sunday 22 October, starting at 10am.
WARBURTON GOLF WEDNESDAY Par: On a day when the weather conditions were kinder than in recent months, club secretary, Ken Barratt, came out on top with a creditable +1. On a countback, Craig Brown snared the runner-up prize with a square round. The ball count actually stopped at square. There were only two NTP winners - Ian Garside 9th and CHB 12th, rounding out a superb day for him. SEPTEMBER Novelty Par and Farrier Plate: Played in memory of popular farrier and member, Mick Cleary, this event is very different to ‘normal’ Par. Mick would have been rapt that long-time veteran member Kevin Kane won the day with a well-managed +5, on a countback. Numerous visitors were in the field, and the winning visitor’s score was +1, by Peter Kerr, also on a countback. The member runner-up was Trevor Porter, also scoring a terrific +5. A full complement of NTPs went to PK 3rd, Steuart Hawke 5th, Crossy Senior 9th, Kevin Kane 12th and Ken White 15th. There were two Longest Drive winners, Garsy and visitor, Tony Quinn. A field of 58 players took part. The Warburton Golf Club Committee would like, once again, to thank the Hatt family for sponsoring this popular annual event.

Motoring Win with Motorclassica
This is a rare opportunity to view a collection of classics at the one venue. In addition to a tribute display inside the Exhibition Building as the featured marque in the Concours d’Elegance, the Ferrari Club will also bring 70 cars to mark this very special anniversary for display in the Club Sandwich on the Saturday. Another major feature of Motorclassica 2017 will be marking 100 years since the first Holden-bodied car was made in Australia, decades before General Motors started making Holden branded cars here. The bitter-sweet celebration coincides with the closure of Holden’s local manufacturing facility. Along with showcasing Holden car making and design, the very first Australian-built Holden 48/215 (FX) prototype from 1948 will be shown, along with three significant concept cars from its history, including the EFIJY and Hurricane, plus a unique display of all eight generations of Australianmade Commodores, the first time such a tribute has been assembled. And to put it all into perspective, Holden has chosen Motorclassica to reveal to the public for the very first time its first fully-imported 2018 Commodore model. Tying in perfectly with the national Lancia Rally, Motorclassica will also pay tribute to 110 years of this innovative Italian marque with a number of iconic Lancia rally cars in original race livery, accompanied by a display of very rare models including one of just two 1947 Lancia Aprila Spyder Grans-

And in something a little different, Motorclassica will recognise Australia’s status as the first country outside the USA to race speedway and celebrate these vintage years with a display of speedway midgets from the 1930s to 1960s. The Australian International Con-
cours d’Elegance will see the country’s premier classic and collector cars and motorcycles competing in multiple classes for the most prestigious show awards on the calendar, while more than 30 collector cars will go under the hammer when Mossgreen conducts the annual Motorclassica auction. Ever popular, the Lorbek Luxury Cars supported Club Sandwich will
see more than 200 car and motorcycle club members attend to display and talk about their vehicles in the areas adjacent to the beautiful Royal Exhibition Building. Motorclassica’s official charity for 2017 is the Peter MacCallum Cancer Foundation. Tickets for Motorclassica 2017 are on sale at: www.motorclassica.com.au

Australia’s premier classic and collector car exhibition, Motorclassica, is set to shine in its eighth year with its largest array of special features yet, when the doors open at Melbourne’s Royal Exhibition Building from Friday 13 October to Sunday 15 October. Motorclassica is Australia’s most prestigious automotive event, uniquely mixing rare, exotic and collectable cars and motorcycles from around the world with the latest contemporary high-end sports and performance models. “Eight years on it feels like Motorclassica is now firmly established on the annual Australian events calendar and is the go-to event for automotive enthusiasts,” Motorclassica event director Paul Mathers said. “For Motorclassica attendees, we annually assemble the very best entries for the Concours, we are oversubscribed with cars for display both inside the venue and outside in the Club Sandwich arena, and we have a number of key automotive manufacturers revealing new products or celebrating significant milestones. “Motorclassica 2017 is going to be hugely exciting because it will combine the very best of all of these elements. It’s already clear this is going to be a very special and memorable show.” Motorclassica 2017 will again play host to ever-popular features such as the Australian International Concours D’Elegance, the daily Club Sandwich car club displays, the VIP Lounge for entrants and special guests, and the Saturday evening Classic Car Auction, conducted this year for the first time by Mossgreen. It all begins with the annual Tour Classica, which will see Motorclassica cars convoy from Alexandra Gardens on the banks of the Yarra River, through the Melbourne CBD to the world-heritage listed Royal Exhibition Building on Thursday 12 October. A major highlight of Motorclassica 2017 will be a celebration of Ferrari’s 70th birthday, one of only a select number of events officially supported and sanctioned by the Ferrari factory in Maranello, Italy.
