MORE TO LOVE The editor’s desk When you have your next latte or pour milk on your morning cereal spare a thought for local dairy farmer Neil Maher who is paying for the privilege of supplying it to you. With the dry weather his bare paddocks aren’t keeping pace with his cows’ requirements so with the extra costs of feed it’s tough times - and not much rain in sight. Of course he’s not the only one caught by surprise with the unexpected dry spell with water tanks across the region running empty. In other news it’s been a week for fund-raising with events from classic motorcycle rides to fashion shows held to raise money for various causes. Noosa is a generous community where helping one another is a daily occurrence. The help being offered to Gavin and Julie Menkens who celebrated their wedding at Noosa Men’s Shed on Sunday is a wonderful example of what happens when mates help each other. ● - Margaret Maccoll

THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT… DESPERATE MEASURES

Neil Maher brings his cows in for milking.

MORE THAN IT’S WORTH Neil Maher is paying out money to produce milk as the costs of the dry weather add up. At milking time at Maher’s Pinbarren dairy the cows jostle to gain a place on the milking carousel, keen for the feed on offer. Dairy farmer Neil Maher milks about 220 cows of his herd of about 500 morning and evening. As he struggles to survive the dry weather Neil has been forced to sell off 25 of his milking cows to the meat works and buy in feed. He said it was costing him money to produce milk and he was digging into savings to buy feed for his cows. “Unfortunately that’s what happens. We’re buying in extra grain and hay and cottonseed. It’s very expensive,” he said. The farm has a winter crop of irrigated rye grass but is running out of irrigation water “very quickly”. As the demand for feed grows the price of grain and hay has been increasing, he said. Neil receives just 55 cents a litre

Cows ride the carousel as farmer Neil Maher attaches the milking machines. for his milk. The dry conditions are stressing the cows and has reduced their milk output from 5500 litres/day to 4500 litres/day. Had his farm not received 9mm of rain in Friday's storm he would have had to this week buy tank water for his family. “We have a quarter tank and we use it very sparingly,” he said. The creek on the property has stopped running but the cows still have water in the dams and waterholes in the creek. ●

Farmers across Noosa are taking measures to compensate for the dry spell and hoping for rain to ease the pressure. Chef Jodie Williams of Black Ant Gourmet at Kin Kin General Store agists droughtmaster cattle and quarterhorses on several properties in the region. She said their cattle get their water from springfed dams and while the dams still had water the springs had stopped flowing and local creeks were drying up. Jodie has weaned calves early to ease the load on the cows, the horses were running out of grain and their business had run out of water several times. “If we don’t get a lot of rain in the next month a lot of people will be affected,” she said. In the past two months Jodie has spent about $2000 on eight truckloads of water for the cafe. She said in comparison she had bought only four loads in the previous five years. Brett Johns of Cooroy Grass Fed Meats said they “were struggling” with their small crops and beef cattle. “We ran out of creek water in July and our cattle are looking at me every day saying 'where’s the green grass?’ ” he said. “We have feed for the cattle and we haven’t had to buy in but in two to three weeks we’ll be in trouble.” Brett said as a third generation farmer they’d been through dry spells before and keep their stock numbers down to deal it. “We always plan for the worst,” he said. “We keep the cattle healthy.

Jodie Williams with four-month-old Norman she is hand-raising after his mother died. We supplement with minerals. As the feed quality keeps dropping the cattle will lose weight and condition.” Maureen Piggott of Country Noosa is optimistic about the ability of farmers to weather the dry. She said people struggled along for 20 years during a drought that ended in 2008. “It will rain. It doesn't last forever,” she said. ●

TWO FACE ASSAULT CHARGES Police have charged two men following the alleged assaults of three people in Noosa on Saturday. Police said about 9pm two men were walking on Hasting Street pushing other people and hitting cars as they walked down the street. One man was pushed to the ground and a man jumped on the bonnet of a car that had just parked. The driver got out of the car and was punched in the face. A second man was also punched in the face.

Police attended the disruption and arrested two men. A 24-year-old Coolum Beach man has been charged with three counts of assault, occasioning bodily harm in company and one count of wilful damage. A 27-year-old Fletcher NSW man has been charged with three counts of assault, occasioning bodily harm in company and one count each of contravening direction and obstructing police. Both men are expected to appear at the Noosa Magistrates' Court on 17 October. ● 201721004-LB21-17

HORSES THE BEST TEACHERS BY MARGARET MACCOLL

S

ally Clayton was only 11 years old when a pony named Dazzler started her on a journey of understanding horses and the lessons they can teach people. “My non-horsey family finally bent to my unyielding pressure to have my own horse,” she said. “He was an Appaloosa, very brightly coloured and was a total gentleman. I had to get a job at the local grocer to help pay for the feed and agistment, and I never looked back.” Sally started riding horses when she was five years old and for the past 20 years she has rescued and rehabilitated horses across Australia, most recently from her property at Cooroibah, and used her positive horsemanship to train horses and people. “My first wild horse was a Welsh mountain pony stallion. He was four years old and had never been handled,” she said.

“We had a few hours to get him off the place before he was going to be shot.” “With the help of a good friend and horse trainer we got him haltered and onto the float. He was terrified, poor little guy. “As I was driving out with him he tried to jump out and got stuck. I had to manhandle him back over the bar and back on our way. It’s never a dull moment with horses. “I have now had Dude, as I called him, for 16 years and I love him so very much. He has taught thousands of children to ride and handle horses and has given so much joy.” Though she’s had many mentors over the years, it’s the horses that have been her best teachers. When a friend asked Sally to take over some of her kids’ lessons while she was away, she discovered she also had a talent for teaching.

“The method that I use when working with horses is a combination of everything I have learned over the past 20 years,” she said. “I am a strong believer in working with the nature of the horse and that using your strength is not necessary when you communicate what you want the horse to do for you clearly . “I use a phase system and work on rewarding the horse for trying which leads towards building the horse’s confidence and self-respect, at the same time as the human becoming a positive and fun leader.” For eight years Sally ran Naturally Horsey in Margaret River, Western Australia, where she taught people horsemanship skills. When she realised how horses could change people’s lives and help them find better ways of communicating she started working with children from the Department of Child Protection. “Seeing these children feel confident and capable was such an honour that when I moved to Mansfield in Victoria

workload and high cost of keeping and rehabilitation it’s just not possible,” she said. “The only reason I keep doing this is to see the horses open up and begin to understand us and trust us. The feeling I get from this is irreplaceable. And to see people understand their role in communication with the horse is a big thrill for me. I don’t care about competing or being the best, I just care about the emotional and physical well-being of the horse and keeping both horse and rider safe. “In saying that I have had Dude for 16 years and Phoenix for 14 years and little Obi has been with me for six years. It’s always heart-breaking for me to have to say farewell to one of my herd, but to know they are going to homes where they will be loved and looked after and bring joy to others makes me happy too.” Not all horses can be rehabilitated, as Sally found out. “I have had a couple that were so badly damaged that they were dangerous,” she said.

“I had a stallion recently that I tried for six months and even got a second trainer’s opinion, thinking I might be missing something, but he was extremely dangerous and I was going to get myself killed or injured. It was a heartbreaking decision but in the end I felt it was the kindest thing to do.” An illness has forced Sally to scale down on her programs with children at risk, but she continues to teach group and private lessons for children and adults and school holiday programs for children including residential horse camps. She also offers travellers the chance to have an Australian farm stay and learn more about horsemanship. For the future, Sally hopes “to continue to help horses and people have a more joyful relationship and keep finding horses in need that I can help to become valued riding horses for people so they will always be safe”. I decided to see if I could do some work with the local youth education program, which turned out to be a huge success. “I love working with people as well as horses and would like to feel that I am good at sharing my knowledge with my students”. After five years in Victoria running her own business, which included horsemanship clinics and working with children for residential clinics as well as teaching at the local pony club, she decided to move to Queensland. From her five-acre property and extra land thanks to the generosity of her “fantastic neighbours” she now focuses on rescuing horses and sharing her knowledge. Sally currently has 11 horses and all have a story. Some have arrived there because of neglect, some are there because they have behaviour issues from being spoilt, which she said could make them dangerous. “If I could I would have hundreds of horses but with the

NEWS NOOSA CRIME TAKES A DIP

WILD ART ON SHOW

By Margaret Maccoll When new Noosa police officer-in-charge Ben Carroll was told by Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington a recent survey showed people perceive crime to be quite high in Noosa, he did his own investigating. The Senior Sergeant conducted a 20-year statistical analysis of the area’s crime and found it to be very low. Sen Sgt Carroll said crime rates had declined in all categories over that time. Assaults have seen a downward trend, property offences have reduced and break and enters have dropped in the past two decades from about 800 to less than 100 in the past year. The exception has been domestic violence rates which Sen Sgt Carroll attributes to an encouragement to report domestic violence and changes in legislation to expand the offence from one between a husband and wife to include de facto, same sex couples and family violence. Drink driving is an issue he identified in the region, and one he tackled at his last post in Rockhampton through a cultural shift. “It’s all ages but not as common in younger people. It’s the older demographic,” he said. “With so many Ubers and taxis, there shouldn’t be a reason for it” This is Sen Sgt Carroll’s second duty round in Noosa. Last time he was straight out of the academy and under the watchful eye of former Bob Atkinson who later became Police Commissioner. It was 30 years ago after police

Tragic for the family. I remember reading it and thinking that’s why I joined the police force,” he said. Sen Sgt Carroll went on to investigate other murders. He has a diverse background which includes time spent as a detective in Brisbane, a tactical officer and stints across Queensland including at Mornington Island,

Birdsville, Normanton, Mt Isa and most recently North Rockhampton where he was officer-in-charge. He grew up in Gympie where his parents still live and holidayed regularly at Noosa as a boy as well as Yeppoon where he was a lifesaver. His father was a police officer for about six years after WWII before switching to teaching. Ben and his wife Christine and their three sons look forward to returning to a favourite place close to family. ●

The $38 million Tinana Interchange upgrade opened to traffic last month. Federal Member for Wide Bay Llew O’Brien said the project supported an estimated 118 direct jobs during the life of the project. “This project has transformed an unsafe monstrosity into a welcoming gateway to the Fraser Coast, enabling the safe movement of traffic and freight between Maryborough and the highway. It will significantly reduce the number of congestion-related crashes, and improve overall operational safety,” he said. Construction began in July 2016 and was completed in September 2017. The Australian Government committed up to $30.4 million and the Queensland Government $7.6 million to fund the project. ●

SHED HELP WITH RECOVERY - AND A WIFE Gavin Menkens credits Noosa Men’s Shed with dragging him out of depression and helping his rehabilitation following a burst brain aneurysm and giving him a new purpose in life. Last Sunday, the garden he had built at the Men’s Shed proved the perfect spot for Gavin to marry Julie Lehnhoff. Members had built an arch for the wedding ceremony, decorated the shed and organised the catering. Gavin, a former chef, met Julie, who was living in Bundaberg, in March 2013 via the Plenty of Fish dating website. Following three months of correspondence, they met in person and were engaged five months later. “When I saw Julie, I knew that was the girl,” Gavin said. Better job prospects in Noosa meant they decided Julie would resign from her administration position at Bundaberg North State School where she had worked for 22 years, and once established in her new home they would get married. In May 2014, Julie landed a job and moved to Noosa to join Gavin. In July, Julie’s mum passed away suddenly. In the same month Gavin required surgery on his foot. Julie said in November she attended a retirement dinner where Gavin was cooking. “After he finished cooking, he said can we go home, I don’t feel well. He had a terrible headache. As we were

Gavin had surgery at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s hospital then was selected to receive intensive rehabilitation therapy at the Princess Alexandra Hospital’s Brain Injury Rehabilitation Unit (BIRU) a unit with only 29 beds. Gavin was at a low point when he returned home and after doctors had told him he wouldn’t be able to work again as a chef in the job he loved. Julie said he needed something to occupy him. She started dropping him off at Noosa

Men’s Shed and Gavin’s mother Bev picked him up. He was unable to speak, had little strength and had difficulty walking and while the other members, mostly older men, were busy building an art studio and then an ex-Army Lysaght Hut they assigned him to hosing duty. A Men’s Shed spokesman said Gavin brought a new garden to life and with it his own physical health and mental wellbeing started to improve. “Some men join at a very low point in their lives, - it could be illness, redundancy or retirement, divorce or the death of a spouse, but most seem to be able to find a sense of purpose again here,” he said.

Cutting the cakes made by Gwen Bain. “Gavin has told us we’ve saved his life and he’s also made a huge contribution to the work at the shed. It’s been very gratifying watching him recover far better than his doctors expected.” Gavin is now at the shed three days a week, and encourages other men to join if only to go and have a chat. “It’s like family,” he said. ●

Katie Rose Cottage Hospice was the recipient of thousands of dollars raised by the efforts of fund-raising events held by Noosa Domain and AVEO of Peregian Springs. The residents of Noosa Domain Village opened their hearts and their Community Centre and welcomed more than 160 ladies to a fashion parade last week in support of Katie Rose Cottage Hospice. Co-ordinators and Noosa Domain residents Carmel Porter and Maidie Low said by planning for months, absolutely everything on the day was generously donated to optimise the financial results for this well-loved charity. “The beautiful door prizes were astonishing, and included baskets of body products, hair products and wine and chocolates, vouchers for cafes, Noosa Arts and handmade jewellery, accommodation in Hastings Street, day spa voucher and a pearl and crystal," Carmel said. “Deborah Judd from Katie Rose Cottage conducted a hilarious commentary on the fashions of the day, all modelled by the gorgeous residents of the Domain and the kitchen fairly groaned under 1200 pieces for morning tea.” Guests included Katie Rose Cottage Hospice directors Carol Raye, Sue Storey and Clytie Glass as well as Noosa Domain directors Stewart Gull and Paul Burke who flew in from Ballarat. “Carol Raye gave an emotional update on the opening of the palliative care facility,” Carmel said. “Can you believe this woman has only

Born out of Noosa’s first major event for International Women’s Day in 2017, WINDO offers women the chance to create connections and collaborate across the region. Founder Jeanette Dal Santo told the gathering of about 50 women the notfor-profit organisation that began around her kitchen table was passionate about becoming an international example of a collaborative society and culture inclusive of women of all ages and from all walks of life. She said it was important for women to hold functions to connect locally, share knowledge and keep their hearts open. “Women need to see other women loving who they are and combining education, knowledge and heart,” she said. Sandy Bolton spoke from her experiences which range from living on a million acre property in the Northern Territory to management consultancy. Sandy said creating change required people to step outside current frameworks, look at tackling issues from multiple aspects and coming up with a different way. After being taken up by a water purifying company, an inexpensive

home water filter has been developed that removes viruses, bacteria, parasites and impurities to meet the US Environmental Protection Agency’s criteria for safe drinking water. She stressed the need for people with ideas to speak up. “The majority of people are like youthey want change but don’t know how or what to do,” she said. TRY THIS … Swimming BY HOLLIE HARRIS

There are so many fantastic benefits to taking up regular swimming. Aquatic Centre in Sunshine Beach and anyone over the age of 18 is welcome to join the club. Noosa Masters Swimming Club swim throughout the year as the two pools (a 25m and a 50m) are heated to a pleasant 26 degrees Celsius. They hold regular sessions on Thursday and Sunday from 7.30am to 9am in the 50m pool. There are so many great reasons to take up swimming: Heart helper Swimming provides unparalleled cardiovascular conditioning, provided you practice consistently and with good technique. While other forms of exercise may be more effective at elite levels (such as running or cycling), incorporating swimming into a

The Queensland Government recently provided $7500 to Noosa Masters Swimming Club to conduct two come and try events with follow up coaching, accredit volunteers in masters’ club coaching and advanced coaching and purchase $2460 worth of equipment to support swimming and to increase Queenslanders participation in sport and recreation activities. Wave goodbye to winter. It’s time to have some fun this spring and re-discover your “happy face” this spring with Noosa Masters Swimming. Head to the Noosa Aquatic Centre for their come and try day Tuesday 3 October, from 9.30am. Do you love to swim, and want to have fun with people your age too? Now you can do both. Our inclusive environment is designed for you to get the most out of your time in the pool and ocean with likeminded people. Challenge your friends to the number one spot, or make new ones along the way at our club. Swimming is an excellent way to build confidence, muscle tone and strength, which means you will look good and feel great all through spring. And our coaches understand you may have work or study commitments, so they’ll always set you realistic targets. We pride ourselves on treating all our members with respect, which means we will listen to you and help you achieve your goals. The group swim year round at the Noosa

cross-training routine and pushing yourself in practice will result in overall improved fitness. Balance your build Swimming builds longer, leaner muscles that complement the shorter denser muscles that develop from weight training. These “swimmer’s muscles” also help boost metabolism to keep calories burning longer. Increased flexibility A heated pool relaxes muscles, increasing flexibility and enabling important stretching. Also, after intense lactic-acidbuilding endurance workouts (running, cycling, weights), an easy swim helps flush out toxins preventing muscle tightness and soreness the following day. Strengthen your core Swimming develops core body strength because it utilises all the body’s muscles simultaneously. Although 70 per cent of a swimmer’s effort comes from the upper body, kickboard and fin workouts can provide an excellent leg workout. Swimming can really add to your quality of life, so why not head along and have a try with the Masters. For the chance to have fun with your mates in an 18-plus safe and friendly environment, why not come and try with Noosa Masters Swimming on Tuesday 3 October or drop them a line at noosamastersswimming@outlook.com or contact Linda 0409 320 286. Noosa Aquatic Centre is at 6 Girraween Court, Sunshine Beach. ●

THREE … fun ways to get wet

1

Stand up paddle: Hire a board and paddle at Main Beach and find your bearings in the protected waters near the beach, or for the adventurous set off around the points towards Noosa National Park’s secluded bays. Alternatively pick up a board at Noosaville and give SUP a try in the river.

2

Deep sea fishing: You can always drop a line in the river but why not get out in the open ocean and join a reef fishing, deep-sea or game fishing charter and check out Sunshine Reef, Jew Shoal, North Reef, Halls Reef, Chardons Reef or the Barwon Banks.

3

Kayak: Whether you have your own paddle craft, want to hire one and do your own thing, or join a guided tour, there are endless waterways to explore. From the Upper Noosa River to the Everglades, Noosa Sound and the beautiful bays accessible from main beach, there’s something for everyone.

THE LOWDOWN FACES OF … Noosaville THE RECENT STORMS DROPPED SOME SIGNIFICANT RAINFALL ON ISOLATED AREAS. WE HIT THE STREETS TO ASK JUST HOW DRY IT IS AT YOUR PLACE.

Gordon, Eden, 11, and Megan Hughes, Sunrise Beach. Sally Horne and Charlotte, 10, Peregian Beach. "We didn’t get much rain out of the storm, not as much as we would have liked," Sally said. We’re on town water, but are conscious when we use water of just how dry it is." "But there was a lot of thunder and lightning," Charlotte added. ●

"We hardly got a drop at our place in Sunrise," Gordon said. "We’re on town water so it’s not having a big impact on us at home, but I run a carpet cleaning business and I’ve got a client out at Cooroibah that I’ll have to take my own water out to. His tank isn’t empty, yet but when they get low there tends to be some sediment and discolouration in the water." ●

Camilla Cullenward. Dubbo.

Daryl and Kathy Burns, Noosaville.

"I’m from Dubbo and it hasn’t rained there for months," Camilla said. "It was very surprising to see how long the wait for water carters here is. We’re on tank water at home, and we can get a delivery the same day. Maybe people there are more proactive about ordering water because we’re used to it. Hopefully it’ll rain while we’re away and filling up our tanks." ●

“It’s very dry,” Kathy said. “We’ve started saving water to use in the garden. They are new gardens so they have to be watered. It’s amazing how much water you lose waiting for the hot water to come through.” “We’ll have to drink more to save water and shower together,” Daryl Burns laughed. ●

Q&A

with Bryce Davis

What made you decide to open a restaurant here? We used to drive past this space that was empty up here for a few years and I thought “that could be a great venture". It’s already got this gorgeous wrought iron fence that encapsulates the whole area. I already had a following with the restaurant I worked in before, and I think to start a business when you’ve already

got some empathy is a good way to hit the ground running. Why Italian? Italian is one of my favourites. I grew up with it and I like the fact that it’s kind of a no brainier. You don’t have to think when you go out and eat Italian, everyone knows what they want, so everyone can go out and enjoy a conversation. It’s a food of the people. What is the busiest day of the week for you? Our Friday nights are massive on takeaways and Saturday night is a great family dining night, and takeaway as well. Friday night is really a rush and it starts about 4.30pm, when we open.

What’s the most popular dish? There’s a strong following for the gamberi tagliatelle I’ve got on the menu. It’s a king prawn pasta with garlic, chilli and saffron thrown in white wine, with capers, fresh tomato, parsley and roquette. It’s one of those classic little prawn pastas. We’ve also got a following for the wild mushroom arancini too. What’s your favourite thing to do on a day off? We close Sunday / Monday; Sunday is family day. We go to the doggie beach for a swim and we come home and have a glass of wine in the backyard and the kids play. Personally, I’d love to be out on the boat fishing. ●

NEWS WATER BIKE APPROVAL FLOODS IN Two Olympic cyclists and their coach gave their tick of approval to Noosa’s new water cycling venture, NautiCycles Noosa, which was officially launched on Noosa River last week. Olympic gold medallist Kathy Watt said the NautiCycles were both a good way to train and a fun way of travelling the river and seeing the sights. “It’s made for everybody,” she said. “You can do a lot of strength work because of the resistance of the water or you can take it easy and have some fun.” Kathy, who won gold at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992 in the 181-kilometre road race then claimed a silver in the 3000 metres on the track in the individual pursuit event, travelled from Melbourne for the launch of the business being operated by Marc and Tammy van der Vegt. Fellow Olympian Ron Boyle also came along after finishing his morning 55-kilometre cycle. The 80-year-old was part of the Australian team at the 1976 Montreal Olympics and 10 years ago won four gold medals at the World Masters Track Cycling Championships at Sydney. Ron said it was “good to see another form of cycling”. Having

Harry Shaw, Ron Boyle, Lachlan Davis and Kathy Watt test out the NautiCycles. moved to Noosa in 1994, Ron said he headed out for a ride every morning along ideal riding spots around Lake Macdonald and Cooroy. Kathy and Ron were joined by their former coach, Noosa local Harry Shaw. Harry, 87, gave up cycling only a couple of years ago but also liked the idea of the water cycles. Sport trainer Andreza Leoncini, who holds a Bachelor of Sports Science, will be conducting ‘spin’ classes using the water cycles. Andreza said she would be

using the same concept used in indoor spin classes, but on the water, and would adapt it for all participants from beginners to advanced. She said the one-hour workouts would be good to improve health, for cardiac health, to tone legs, abs, buttocks and participants could burn up to 480 calories an hour. Noosa MP Glen Elmes officially launched the venture, saying it was a great example of people seeing an opportunity and making it happen. ● - Margaret Maccoll

TALES OF NOOSA Noosa photographer and podcaster Yenny Stromgren is shining a light on Noosa locals through her communitybased podcast show Noosa Stories. Originally from Sweden, Yenny moved to Australia in 1998 to study photography then stayed and worked in Melbourne as a photographer for 10 years. She began recording conversations during photographic sessions, turning them into a podcast called Everyday Light Warriors. “I realised through the Everyday Light Warriors that the true heart of a community is in the emotional connectedness of its people,” she said. She has since set up a second podcast, Noosa Stories. Noosa Stories is where business, beach and community meet. “It’s an engaging, entertaining and uplifting audio exploration of the real-life stories behind Noosa locals; from funny anecdotes of ‘random people on the street’, to the insightful knowhow of our business people, and heart-warming stories from

Podcaster Yenny Stromgren. volunteers in the community. “The podcast show asks residents the questions we all have about living and working in and around Noosa ... what does it really take to stay here? How do we thrive here? How can we make Noosa life even better?” Yenny’s podcasts have gained so much attention, she began teaching others to podcast. Last weekend she held a podcast workshop and hopes to help launch 20 more Noosa podcasters into the online audioscape by Christmas. The revamped Sunshine Beach Skate Park reopened on 16 September, and council is throwing local skaters a party on 30 September to celebrate. The fun will kick off from midday with live music, learn-to-skate classes, best-trick contests and skating demos. Project officer Dallas Bickley said the new-look park catered for skaters of all levels of experience, with the new design providing a range of new challenges. Council redesigned the 13-yearold park in consultation with local skaters. A highlight of the park is the shire’s first in-ground skate bowl which features a taco-shaped corner. The large existing steel half pipe remains and other elements of the design include a mini-half pipe, rollover with A-frame hubba, flat bank and jersey block, love seat quarter pipe and A-frame and flat steel rails. ●

LETTERS

Post your letters to: 36 Mary St, Noosaville, 4566 or email: newsdesk@noosatoday.com.au

EYES WIDE SHUT Margaret Wilkie has her eyes wide shut again saying the government policy gave babies, children, women and men numbers, denying people freedom and hope. The Labor-Green parties’ policies caused the deaths of 1200 children, women and men at sea by drowning when those people attempted to enter Australia illegally. Some 50,000 people were put into camps and/or holding centres around Australia by Labor and the Greens. The government has removed children from detention and all arrivals have been given the opportunity to return to their country of origin or go to any other country that will take them. The cost to the Australian taxpayer has been over $12 billion and rising - time for the truth Margaret. David Wilson, Noosa Waters.

ASK THE PEOPLE Re: Another Marathon on the Cards (Noosa Today, 21 September), perhaps council would like to consult residents rather than business owners about how they feel about their streets being closed and their town invaded by yet another marathon event in May next year? S. Griffin, Noosaville.

THINK ABOUT IT R. Dixon, I was very disappointed to read your rigid views on same-sex marriage and hope you will think more broadly about the issue. You refer to a range of scripture about marriage from the Bible, however I must inform you that marriage not only pre-dates Christianity, it also is present across many religions and many cultures. What this means is that your view of marriage is simply that - your view. It does not apply to me and my wife whom I was lucky enough to marry in London three years ago. I also must remind you that in the last census 30 per cent of respondents indicated they had no religion and 45 per cent had a religion other than Christianity. What this means is that it is entirely unfair and unjust for your personal beliefs to dictate how the rest of Australia views marriage. The reality is that the definition of marriage in Australia makes absolutely no reference to religion or God - it is an entirely legal definition and it is those legal rights I seek. I want my wife to be my next of kin, I want her as my automatic beneficiary in the case of death. And should we have children, I want our kids to be protected by the same laws as kids in other marriages. I urge you to consider the wider implications of your views - same-sex

LENSCAPE

Paul Francis sent in this stunning shot of Coolum s First Bay colours. If you would like to submit a photo of local wildlife, lifestyle or nature for Lenscape, please email your high-res shots to newsdesk@noosatoday.com.au marriage will be a legally binding agreement and will have no relationship to, or impact on your own personal spiritual beliefs on marriage. Anna H, Castaways Beach.

WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS ... I find it a bit strange when people quote passages from The Bible to support their view that same-sex couples should not have the right to marry. The Bible also says that if you work on the seventh day you should be put to death, wives must be subordinate to their husbands, and that people of other religions should be killed (Numbers 25: 1-9). I fully support Christians having their say, but it should be remembered that, according to the last census, when the question was asked about religious preference, the largest single group ticked ’no religion’. Bruce Hallett, Tewantin.

SAY YES Are you going to vote yes or no to same-sex marriage? I am a heterosexual raised as a Roman Catholic. I am voting yes to same-sex marriage. I believe all people should be treated equally, with respect and dignity, and therefore gay/lesbian or anyone on the scale in between should be given the same rights and privileges as everyone else. If we do not, we are discriminating against

them as white people have discriminated against people of different races in the past, and sadly sometimes continue to do so. Once upon a time, people believed the world was flat and as science progressed, it was discovered that it was round. The human race has learnt many new and wonderful things in the last 100 years alone, including research which shows people’s gender is something we are born with. We do not choose to be male or female, it is in our genetic make-up, physically, mentally or both. The Bible was written long, long ago before modern society and in my opinion, a lot that it contains is outdated and not relevant to today’s world. In my opinion, being a ‘Christian’ involves doing what is right and quote: ’Do unto others as you would have them do to you’. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I urge you to be open-minded and give this some thought. Everyone should have the right and privilege to spend their life with the person they believe is their soulmate and they have the right to have that partnership acknowledged in every way, including our legal system. Erna de Bree, Noosaville.

DISAPPOINTING DIATRIBE Re letter (Noosa Today, 21 September, R. Dixon) it was so disappointing to see his diatribe of abuse calling LGBTI people an “abomination” among other names. It is also clear that The Bible says this too R. Dixon. The well-known verse presents what has be-

come known as the golden rule. In the Bible the text reads: “Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you: do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.“ Matthew 7:12 - in other words - do unto others as you would have others do unto you - love is love - everyone deserves equality - it’s a fundamental human right. This “SSM plebiscite” or “SSM postal” vote, instigated by this government, has created much hatred and negative attention that the LGBTI couples don’t deserve - I know many Christians who support SSM as they know quite clearly SSM has nothing to do with religion. It is only about civil law and civil rights for all Australian people - it is about protection for SS couples in their committed relationship - it is about the rights they should enjoy - people should read the letter from Diana Husoy to understand the anguish this SSM voting is causing. Everyone deserves equality - it’s a fundamental human right - the reason Australian same sex couples want legal marriage, is because: * A legal marriage offers equal protection under the law. With a legal marriage, you are immediately the next-of-kin. A legal marriage offers all the citizenship rights of The Constitution. A legal marriage is immediately valid, unlike de facto rights. A legal marriage offers immediate joint property and inheritance rights. A legal marriage offers undeniable rights to benefits and insurance. The rights of a partner in a legal marriage cannot be denied by blood relations. A legal marriage is a sworn, binding contract that can only be broken in a court of family law. It’s wrong that one part of our population cannot and do not have the same legal protection as the rest enjoy and it’s blatant discrimination and causes much heartache. Marie, (address withheld on request).

MINDS MADE UP Yes or no? I do not believe for a minute, that there is anyone out there in our community who has not made up their mind about the postal vote. I believe this is one subject that people feel very strongly about, and it doesn’t matter the amount of pressure from media, political parties, celebrities, sporting associations, councils, rallies, walks, demonstrations and so on, you will not change an individual’s mind on this topic. It is a personal opinion (like this letter) and should stay that way. Dom Massoni, Verrierdale. Sunrise Beach.

MOVE TO ENJOY THE BEST OF VILLAGE LIFE WELCOME to one of Peregian Beach’s most exceptional homes within footsteps of the popular Peregian Village Square and opposite the patrolled beach access. Here, concrete, steel and raw timbers combine to create a home that is striking, bold and beautifully modern yet functional and designed with family living in mind. The floorplan offers four bedrooms, including the master suite with walk-in wardrobe, beautiful ensuite, study nook and floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook the sparkling wet-edge pool. The three other bedrooms all feature built-in wardrobes and study desks, and have easy access to the main bathroom. The pool house features an open-plan bedroom and lounge, plus bathroom, kitchenette and access to poolside the deck, making it perfect for guests. The kitchen boasts high-end appliances and luxury finishes including perlino quartz stone bench tops and 2-pac matt finish cabinetry. There is plenty of storage and a large island bench that overlooks the open-plan living and dining areas that flow out to covered balconies. Beautiful extra-high timber ceilings and polished suspended concrete floors add a sense of drama and luxury to the space, but it is the smaller details that make this home exceptional. From the Queensland spotted gum flooring that flows seamlessly between the indoor and outdoor areas to the beautiful glass breezeway that gives this solid-built home a light, almost fragile aesthetic; it’s clear every inch of this home has been masterfully and lovingly crafted. The use of glass extends to the main living space where the lines between indoor and outdoor living are blurred. What has been created is a bright, welcoming space that makes the most of Sunshine Coast’s sub-tropical climate. Every aspect of comfortable living has been considered. Banks of louvre windows feature throughout the entire home creating excellent cross-ventilation, so while the home boasts ducted air-conditioning, it will rarely be needed. A study with built-in storage, separate laundry, purpose-built media room, utility area with storage and double garage complete the floorplan. Some of the extra features include a Honeywell live monitoring video surveillance system, a fully irrigated water system with 1500-litre water tanks and aluminium garage door frames and facing. ●

TWO stunning Noosa homes inspired by the outdoors lifestyle are among eight houses vying for the accolade of best new architectural homes in Australia. A Little Cove beach house and a rural homage to camping at Doonan have been shortlisted in the Australian Institute of Architects’ National Architecture Awards. Tucked against the Noosa National park, Mitti Street House by James Russell Architect, features a series of pavilions that make camp around the edges of the central gathering space and pool. The architects describe the home, at its essence, as a “large screened verandah in the rainforest”, providing the perfect place for its owner to work and share with friends and family when they come to stay. It requires little maintenance and is comfortable year round without mechanical heating or cooling. Set on a clearing among its own pocket of rainforest at Doonan, The Tent house, by Sparks Architects, teeters on the threshold between the constructed world and the natural landscape. To deal with the challenges of creating a family home in a small clearing surrounded by high canopies, the architects paired an “insulated box for cooler months that allows habitation to a tent-like amenity in warmer months”. The home’s dual mode allows the family to live in an enclosed, sheltered mode, or open up and interact directly with their natural surroundings. National Architecture Awards jury chair Ken Maher said the entries exemplified the positive impact architecture had on Australian cities, towns and landscapes. Launching on World Architecture Day, Monday 2 October, the annual People’s

Wallflower, by Jordan Rakei

Soon, by Lois Murphy

At just 25 years old, Jordan Rakei has battled his inner demons and written an inspirational, soul-stirring record in the process. Wallflower is the latest release from the multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and producer who was born in New Zealand and left Brisbane in 2015 to pursue his work in London. He writes with a maturity and flair that belies his years and Wallflower edges beyond the peripheries of the genial, often sun-flecked sound his fans have come to know him for. On Wallflower the tools and the process have evolved - the focus is on live instrumentation - but the groove and the cadence are unmistakable, framing soul and jazz in a truly vibrant work. ●

An almost deserted town in the middle of nowhere, Nebulah’s days of mining and farming prosperity - if they ever truly existed - are long gone. These days even the name on the road sign outside town has been removed. Yet for Pete, an ex-policeman, Milly, Li and a small band of others, it’s the only place they have ever felt at home. One winter solstice the birds disappear. A strange, residual and mysterious mist arrives. Partly inspired by the true story of Wittenoom, the ill-fated West Australian asbestos town, Soon is the story of the death of a haunted town, and the plight of the people who either will not, or simply cannot, abandon all they have ever had. ●

Kingsman: The Golden Circle (MA15+) Cast: Taron Egerton, Channing Tatum, Jeff Bridges

Kingsman: The Secret Service introduced the world to Kingsman - an independent, international intelligence agency operating at the highest level of discretion, whose ultimate goal was to keep the world safe. In Kingsman: The Golden Circle, the heroes face a new challenge. When their headquarters are destroyed and the world is held hostage, their journey leads them to the discovery of an allied spy organisation in the US called Statesman, dating back to the day they were both founded. This new adventure tests their agents’ strength and wits to the limit. ●

COOK

Best-selling cookbook author Lee Holmes, author of Supercharged Food: Eat Clean, Green and Vegetarian has shared her Muchos Nachos recipe with Noosa Today readers. To veganise - substitute the egg with three tablespoons ground or whole chia or flaxseeds soaked in 125 ml of water for 15 minutes. INGREDIENTS · 2 tomatoes, diced. · 1 cucumber, diced. · Cashew sour cream. · Creamy avocado dressing. · Coriander sprigs, to serve. Nachos chips · 100 g (3.5 oz/1 cup) almond meal. · 1 large organic egg. · 1 teaspoon turmeric. · 1/4 teaspoon cumin. · 1/4 teaspoon coriander. · 1 teaspoon grated orange zest. · 1 teaspoon Celtic sea salt. METHOD To make the chips, preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celcius. Place all the chip ingredients in a large bowl and mix with a wooden spoon to form a dough. Place the dough on a clean work surface between two pieces of baking paper. Roll the dough out until it is 2mm thick. Remove the top piece of baking paper and transfer the dough and bottom piece of baking paper to a baking tray. Using a sharp knife, deeply score the dough every 3cm then do the same in the opposite direction so you form squares. Bake in the oven for 12 minutes. Allow to cool before breaking them apart. To assemble the nachos, place the nachos chips on a chopping board, and top with the remaining ingredients. ●

BRAZILIANS DO A FINE BARBIE BY TESSA MAPSTONE It is a truth universally acknowledged that Aussies love their barbecues. But so do Brazilians and now you can get a taste of how they do it Churrasco-style (pronounced Shoo-Has-Co) in Noosaville. The chefs at Samba Grill skewer prime cuts of marinated beef, pork, lamb, and chicken and grill them over organic charcoal. Cooking over the charcoal barbecue makes the meat tender and gives it a unique flavour. The cuts, which are carved at the table and served to diners, in the tradition of the South American Guarani indigenous people, and then later the Brazilian Gauchos (aka cowboys). Specialty vegetarian dishes are also available, along with Brazilian side dishes and staples like beans, rice, salad and potatoes. Add a splash of traditional condiments like Piri Piri and Malagueta Pepper Oil and you’re ready to eat. If your mouth has already started watering plan to go on an empty stomach. In the Rodizio style, diners pay a fixed, all-you-can-eat price, and the delicious dishes keep coming until you have had enough. A symbol system lets your waiter know if your appetite has been satiated, or whether you want more. A green symbol displayed on the table

indicates you are still hungry, while a red symbol says “I’m satisfied (or maybe even stuffed)”. For those with a small appetite (or maybe you had a late lunch), there is also the option of choosing from the a la carte menu. Both the Rodizo and a la carte menus are 100 per cent gluten free. The bar is fully-licenced, or bring your

own bottle of wine if you prefer (there is a corkage fee). Samba Grill, on the river at 251 Gympie Terrace, Noosaville, is open six nights a week during school holidays - five nights a week outside holidays - from 5.30pm until late. Phone 5449 9577 to book a table, or visit sambagrill.com.au for more information. ●

FOCUS IS ON CLEANER TASTE The discussion around organic and biodynamic wines is relatively new in Australia, but most wines from Europe have been chemical free for centuries. Vinyards on the continent have not faced the need to use chemicals to treat their vines, so have been naturally organic. The introduction of certification has resulted in many seeking the green stamp often found on the back of bottles. Here in Australia and New Zealand, more and more wine producers are moving towards better, cleaner, and more sustainable viticulture. For those who are unsure what organic and biodynamic means in the world of vino, here is a simple breakdown. Organic: Purity of product using nonsynthesised ingredients. Biodynamic: Holistic agricultural health. Sustainable: Mitigation and reduction of wastefulness in winemaking. A wine can be made and tick all categories, or just one, and there are a wealth of certifications around all three. To expand slightly on the term organic when referring to wines, it is important to remember that they are not additive-free, and that organic only refers to the growing practices implemented by the vineyard. While they are not additive-free, they

often contain much less and also exclude chemicals like herbicides, fungicides, sulphur and Mega Purple. Organic and biodynamic wines are a growing trend which is why Embassy XO in Sunshine Beach, as well as its two premium bottle shops, XO Cellars in Noosa Fair and Sunshine Beach have a large range of both on their shelves. Embassy XO has again been awarded a two-glass rating as part of the Australia’s Wine List of the Year Awards by Gourmet Traveller. Embassy XO’s wine list was curated by Chris Burton and sommelier James Alcock, and was created with a focus on premium wines. It includes a balanced range of Australian and international wines with many organic and biodynamic blends included. “When designing the Embassy XO wine list we wanted to create a collection of stunning premium wines from around the world, and have found blends from some incredible small and boutique vineyards,” Mr Burton said. The Embassy XO and Cellars staff are always on hand to answer any questions you may have about organic, biodynamic, sustainable, preservative-free and nonorganic wines. ●

SOCIAL SCENE

GENTS TAKE A VINTAGE RIDE TO BE SEEN Noosa’s Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride was a great success on Sunday, bringing together almost 300 riders and raising about $30,000. Noosa ride organiser Cameron MacGowan said it was a good, safe ride and while it was a bit hot to be wearing a suit, the debonair outfits grabbed people’s attention. Cameron praised the police who assisted with traffic, volunteers who helped out and the riders. “Everyone behaved in a gentlemanly manner,” he said. The worldwide event brings together riders on vintage style motorcycles passing through more than 600 cities in a spectacular parade to raise funds and awareness for prostate cancer and mental health programs on behalf of official charity partner, the Movember Foundation. People can still donate to the cause at www.gentlemansride.com and click on the Sunshine Coast ride. ●

It specialises in the fast relief and sustained recovery from both acute and chronic pain as well as loss of function. The physiokey has been medically approved to do just that. Physiokey is latest in the well known and researched medical technology in the ďŹ eld of bio-feedback controlled non-invasive neurostimulation. Back-Roads Touring has spent more than 25 years crafting small group holidays that delve a little deeper than the usual. These tours do not simply drop by the biggest sights and major cities, but invite you to see a destination through the eyes of the people who know it best: the locals who call it home. These journeys are made for those absorbing, never-to-be-forgotten views, not for darting from A to B. Back-Roads will take you to places off the standard tourist trails, and go beyond the facade to learn more about local food, crafts, history and culture. Each day ends at a cherry-picked boutique retreat loaded with local charm, like country estates, castle hotels, villas and traditional inns. With a maximum of 18 passengers on any one trip, Back-Roads sets itself apart with a more personalised experience and a relaxed, flexible form of touring. Unlike large coaches, the luxury minicoaches can go almost anywhere a car can, meaning travellers can take in scenic back roads instead of run-of-the-mill motorways. Access the smallest town squares, country lanes and medieval villages, all at a leisurely pace. Forget sunrise starts and long days hopping on and off the bus. Back-Roads journeys rarely leave before 8.30am and give each stop the attention it deserves. Long drives are kept to a minimum.

MEET ACCLAIMED AUTHOR Annie’s Books of Peregian Beach is thrilled to be bringing new Australian talent Jane Harper to Noosa for a Literary Lunch and launch of her latest fiction Force of Nature. Jane’s debut novel The Dry claimed the Australian Book Industry’s Fiction Book of the year and overall Book of the Year which is quite an achievement for a debut. Force of Nature follows the mystery of what happened to Alice Russell, a whistleblower who knows all the secrets about the company she works for and the people she works with. Five women reluctantly pick up their backpacks and start walking along the muddy track. Only four come out the other side. The hike through the rugged Giralang Ranges is meant to take the office colleagues out of their air-conditioned comfort zone and teach resilience and team building. Far from the hike encouraging teamwork, the women tell Falk a tale of violence and disintegrating trust. Federal Police Agent Aaron Falk has a particularly keen interest in the whereabouts of the Road, Noosaville, commencing at 10.30am. Clothing is from ’It’s all about Me’ which is under new management. Tickets can be obtained by contacting Jan on 5474 0636.

A REAL IMPACT WITH NINE MEDALS BY RON LANE Boxing Queensland hosted the State Amateur Boxing Championships last weekend at the Eagles Sports Complex in Mansfield, Brisbane. Once again Cooroys Impact Boxing Academy came away with medals. From a team of 10 fighters, the final tally was six gold and three silver. With these titles being a step toward the Commonwealth Games selection, it was the goal of Impact coach Mark Evans to ensure that his top four Elite grade fighters Taylah Robinson, Bryce Hegarty, Luke Martin and Tyler Blizzard made it through to the final selection tournament for the Commonwealth Games- The National Titles. This tournament will be held in November in NSW. At the completion of the State Titles, a new member of the Impact team had made, as the name implies, a real Impact. Her name was Paige Robinson. Boxing in the 38kg Division not only did she win the State Title, but her outstanding performance was

further recognised when she was named as the School Girl Fighter of the Tournament. Her first fight of the evening was something of a sensation when she won a unanimous decision (despite being a relative novice) against an opponent with a 7 and 0 win and loss record. We wish her well for the future. Others to perform well and come home with gold were Ella Boot, Abbey Slavin and Chloe Slavin. Once again the team spirit and, in particular, their code of conduct away from the ring, was very noticeable. Well done to all club officials. During the course of the tournament, coach Mark Evans, who recently returned from the World Championships in Hamburg, Germany, (where he officiated as the assistant coach of the Australian team) took the opportunity to address a meeting of Queensland’s high performance coaches. The reason for the meeting was for Evans to put forward and introduce for discussion a new training concept; a concept which he calls centralised training program for Queensland. Not only did he explain the

program, but he emphasised his desire to “implement the program throughout the state of Queensland.” The program would consist of three squads, Junior, Youth and Elite; selection for these squads would be performance based. During his presentation, he emphasised the importance of all coaches working together as one. “Their main aims would be to get the squads together every six to eight weeks for training sessions and also publicise the program in the media. This would give our young fighters public exposure; but most important of all the opportunity to maintain a high standard of performance. These steps would, of course, create incentive. Those who don’t perform would be removed and other young fighters invited to join. This would give goals for all to achieve and also give them exposure to National officials such as selectors and coaches.” His presentation was well received and those present were unanimous in their support. "This is something that we are badly in need of,” one coach said. Should this be implemented, a side but

very important factor would be that possible sponsors from the world of big business could be encouraged to get involved. The major hurdle at present is finance. With Australia being where it is, lack of sponsorship makes it virtually impossible to attend the major tournaments overseas; and these countries are the learning fields of future Olympic champions. ●

NOOSA ON TOP OF LADDER BY DOUG MCCONNELL NOOSA CROQUET The Sunshine Coast golf pennant competition has one round to go to close the season. Round 10 saw Noosa travel to Headland/ Buderim last week. Given that Noosa had to concede 38 extra turns to the home team, they somehow managed to squeak victory winning six matches to four, taking 53 hoops to 46 overall. The individual match results follow, with Noosa shown first. In the first and second singles Stewart McConnell defeated Mike Owen 6:4 while Niven Gugich won against Martin Atkins 5:2.

In the reverse singles Niven defeated Mike 7:5 and Stewart fell to Martin 4:6. In the 3-4 singles Colin Hindson handily won against Sally Atkins 6:0, with Ray Powley losing to Don Murray 5:6. In the reverse 3-4 singles Colin lost to Don 4:2 while Ray won against Sally 7:3. In the doubles, Stewart and Niven lost 4:10 to Mike and Martin. Colin and Ray defeated Sally and Don 7:6 for the day to end in Noosa’s favour. The ladder board shows Noosa in first place with Nambour second. A Noosa pennant appears very likely as Noosa would have to lose its final match 0:10 and Nambour win its last match 10:0 to create an upset. No champagne just yet! ●

FINALS TIME FOR THE MEN TEWANTIN NOOSA BOWLS SATURDAY On Saturday, 16 September, Tewantin Noosa Bowls Club had five out of six divisions progress to semi-finals in the Men’s pennants. All played extremely competitively, although losses were recorded for three out of the five teams. Division 3 and Division 8 played in the finals in their respective divisions. Division 3 went down narrowly to Coolum Beach in a hard-fought match with only the last end deciding the winner Coolum defeated Tewantin 55-52. Division 8 took on Nambour at Club Maroochy and in another close finish Tewantin Noosa won 46-44. Congratulations must go to all played and also the selectors who close to the end of pennants, had to run around finding replacements when a few more absences than expected were experienced. MONDAY The ladies Division 2 team - who were also minor premiers - travelled down to club Kawana to take on Coolum Beach in the final. A very close and competitive game was experienced by spectators and the support gave the ladies a little bit extra boost and Tewantin Noosa won the game 35-31.

Congratulations to all the ladies who played and those who travelled and supported the teams as well as the selectors. DJ Tom Tilley from Triple J will headline entertainment on Saturday night.

OFF THE FIELD FUN TO BE HAD There’s also plenty of fun off the field for the 2017 IGA Market Place Noosa 7s Festival. Festival spokesman Stewart Nolan said about 1800 competitors were expected at the event and with supporters the event would bring about 5000 people to Noosa. Stewart said the event was hailed the biggest tournament of its kind in Australia, and there was entertainment to be staged at the club.

“New for this year’s tournament is the Noosa Surf Club Beach Bar where we are bringing the Beach to Noosa Dolphins Rugby Club,” he said. “Friday night is the welcome party featuring former Aussie 7s star Jordan Tuapoa as guest DJ along with other top local DJs. Saturday night is the beach party with Tom Tilley from Triple J as the headline act along with other top DJs.

The event will finish off in the Beach Bar on Sunday with a Sunday session after party. The Noosa Rugby Union grounds Dolphin Oval on Bicentennial Drive, Sunshine Beach, offer a first-class oval and facilities, just minutes from beautiful beaches, restaurants, bars and cafes in Noosa Heads and Sunshine Beach. The event is operated in affiliation with the Noosa Dolphins, the largest rugby club on the Sunshine Coast. ●

The Noosa International 7s Festival was established in 2010, and has since grown to become one of Australia’s premier rugby sevens events. The 2013 festival generated unprecedented interest with a high volume of quality International, national and regional teams seeking to secure one of the exclusive positions within our tournament. The core tournament of the event consists of 16 Men’s and 8 Women’s teams competing in pool categories to make it through to the finals. The year 2013 saw the introduction of the inaugural Open School Boys and School Girls tournament, a very exciting development for the growth of our festival. This year for the first time players from the Australian team will be joining Noosa on the field. Australia 7s team members will join the Noosa teams from Oktoberfest 7s in Munich. Rugby 7s remains an Olympic sport Sevens will remain an Olympic sport until at least 2028, after the International Olympic Committee confirmed the sporting line-up for the next two games. The IOC announced this month that all of the 28 current core sports would stay in the Games for the 2024 Paris and 2028 Los Angeles Games, a major boon for Sevens Aussie men’s coach Andy Friend said the confirmation was a sign of the progress the sport is making. ●

NOOSA TODAY 53

LIFE OF BRINE

PHIL JARRATT

BEAUTY CONCEALS THE BEAST WITHIN One evening last week I wandered across the sandy strip from our accommodation in the Gili Isles (which is a bit like saying an ATM machine!) to the rocky shore, and took a snapshot of one of the most beautiful sunsets I have seen in a lifetime of looking at good ones. Gunung Agung, the most significant peak in Bali, below which resides the Hindu mother temple of Besakih, was bathed in an exquisite yellow-red light that made me catch my breath as I looked across the narrow Bali Sea. But later that same evening, as I caught up with the world from my computer, I realised that the beauty of Agung concealed a beast within. The beast is now upon us, with 50,000 of the poorest people in Bali evacuated from their humble homes and sitting on hard earth floors in community halls and sportsgrounds in the safe haven of Klungkung while they wait to see if their former lives will survive the first great eruption in the Ring of Fire for more than half a century. In 2013, on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the last major eruption of Gunung Agung, when 1100 people lost their lives and countless others lost their homes and livelihood, I interviewed a wonderful woman named Lelia Lewis at her home in Sanur. Lelia, then 85, had arrived in Bali in 1953 with her husband Rodger, as members of the Christian Missionary Alliance. I have no truck with Christian missionaries who throughout history have destroyed native cultures to inflict their own, but the Lewises were a different kettle of fish. Rodger had long gone when I first met Lelia, through my friendship with Dick Lewis, their son and a novelist and surfing mate. But as soon as I encountered Lelia I realised that her brand of muscular Christianity was about saving lives first, souls second. Lelia told me about the various theories as to what caused the disastrous eruption of 1963 - the wrong selection of dates for the Eka Dasa Rudra religious celebration, or the more favoured divine retribution for the alleged debauchery of Sukarno, father of the Republic, who had displeased the gods by building a holiday mansion above the holy temple at Tampaksiring and then

Fire in the sky above Mount Agung. entertained young Balinese women there. Whatever the cause, Lelia and Rodger had to house the homeless and tend to them through six weeks of intense eruptions, a year of continued activity, and then years of rebuilding and recovery. Now it’s all coming back. As I write we are expecting a major eruption at any moment, but perhaps it won’t happen for a month or more. The seismic evidence is that it will happen, but when? In the meantime the poorest of the poor sit on the hard ground in Klungkung and wait. For those of you with a special interest in helping the people of Bali, a relief fund has been set up by the Kopernik foundation. More information at kopernik.info/project/ mount-agung-emergency.com A few days of Hope The name of our shabby little villa on Gili Trawangan was “Hope”, one of four in just one two-storey building squeezed between a concrete wall and a dusty lane. The others were “Peace”, “Love” and rather incongruously “Beach”. The young European backpackers above us in Beach seemed to spend most of the

night marching in formation from one side of the villa to the other, perhaps looking for candles, since the power went off at least two or three times a night. Peace was occupied by the owners, two Iranian men who live in Sweden when not hanging around their island paradise, smoking cigarettes and fixing each other’s man-buns. They didn’t seem very relaxed, perhaps waiting for guests to complain about the power outages, or the bathroom rats that ate all the toilet paper, or the broken pool recliners, or the fact that the hammock and the only day-beds in the garden were constantly occupied by them and their overflowing ashtrays. We didn’t complain. Knowing that people were sleeping on the floor and queuing for rice handouts in Klungkung, it seemed churlish to even consider it. We simply ate our cold egg and coffee complimentary breakfasts and pedalled away on the most roadworthy of their junk-heap house bikes, looking for a stretch of beach that offered some protection from the howling onshore wind that blew every day. We also booked very late in school

holidays, and didn’t have much choice. And in any case, we were there to spend time with friends from France, and that was wonderful - a linguistics immersion course over fine food and wine as they tried to reignite their basic Bahasa Indonesia, while we struggled to resume where we left our conversational French a dozen years ago. Another highlight was braving the choppy channel in a small boat to explore neighbouring Gili Meno for the first time. The least-populated and least-developed of the Gilis, Meno is also the island leading the way on environmental issues, with island-wide Sunday clean-ups and most restaurants serving water in glass carafes, rather than the ubiquitous plastic bottles, while across the way on Gili T, the centre of the island is one big landfill dump, and the coast is dotted with luxury beach club construction sites. At least there are still no cars or motorbikes on the islands, other than the odd electric scooter. Transport is still by foot, bike or the horsedrawn cidomo taxis. But I wonder how long that will last. ●

BETWEEN THE FLAGS

RON LANE

BEACH SAFETY THIS SURF SEASON Another happy weekend on our three beaches Peregian, Sunshine and Noosa- no major incidents. Changes of wind conditions on Noosa's Main Beach created minor sea changes which resulted in patrol members giving advice to some tourists. Lifesavers at Noosa were required to call the paramedics when a lady suffered a fall on land away from the beach and the call was made as a precaution. Noosa IRB training team continued their crew training, and their final assessment is almost here; one more Saturday of lectures and boat before they conduct their final assessment. Training team spokesman Chris Grandmange said, “At the completion of this course, it will give us another nine crewies and this is exactly what we need. With courtesy patrols still on the go, we will always need crewies.” With the 2017 surf season now underway, it’s that time of the year again when we at Noosa Today take the opportunity to refresh your mind regarding those all-important facts of beach safety. There are two major areas of concern- our beaches (patrolled and unpatrolled) and that beautiful family walk National Park. Starting at the three patrolled beaches, the

Saving lives this summer. basic rules are the same. Your protectors are the people in the red and yellow uniforms. Their duties are not only to perform rescues, but also to answer any questions you may have regarding beach safety. Remember don’t be too shy or embarrassed to ask- it’s part of the job. Most important for those of you who are planning a family walk through the National Park, talk to the patrol people before you start, be it from Noosa or Sunshine Beach. Those who take off from Sunshine Beach to walk to National Park will no doubt be impressed by the beauty of Alexandria Bay (A Bay). Usually, a beautiful rolling surf with

HOOK, LINE & SINKER

crystal clear waters, and if it is a hot day very inviting, but here in lies the danger-there are no patrols. If you must refresh, knee deep, no more. However, if per chance you possess a stubborn arrogant streak and decide to venture for a swim in this Devils Playground, please do the lifesavers a favour, and leave your family on the sand. For our lifesavers to have to do a body recovery on adults is not nice, but do it for a child or even worse children, is un-forgivable. If when you arrive on the beach and by chance see people in trouble, remember that

there are two Emergency Radio Beacons one at the northern entrance to the Bay and a second at the southern entrance. Follow the instructions on the label next to the button. Don’t panic, they are very easy to follow. Our next reminder is regarding the walk itself. Winding paths along the beautiful cliff tops, proudly well kept by our council and easy to walk; and of course those small beautiful sandy beaches. However, as with A Bay, unpatrolled. As with every season, the occasion will occur that a person, family, or runner on a fitness kick, will see people in the surf in trouble. First rule, grab a mobile (yours or a passerby) stay on the spot and call triple-zero. Then give location, then problem. By this we mean number of people, how far out, are they being supported by someone or board rider and above all- stay where you are. Next grab a towel or your T shirt. This you can wave to attract attention and if need be, help direct the rescue team; but again stay where you are. Remember when talking to triple-zero, stay calm and above all speak slowly. If fast and jumbled, you will have to repeat and this will waste time. Remember response time is the all-important factor. Your safety is our concern. ●

NOOSA WEATHER FORECAST JACK MANGROVE

THURSDAY Sunny

GOOD NUMBERS OF FLATHEAD ON THE BITE Ryan Fox with a 49cm Jacks.

Bream are still on the chew in good numbers throughout the river system providing hours of entertainment for the kids, peeled prawns are a great bait choice.

Dust off those crab pots as the crabs have started to show up in Weyba Creek and the ski run stretches, pots baited with fresh mullet have produced the better sized crustaceans. Most of the good of weather windows have been in the mornings so anglers have been at the boat ramps before dawn and heading back before the breezes pick up. Offshore anglers with larger craft have been catching quality snapper and pearlies from the Hards and Barwon Banks. If you are not wanting to travel big distances try North Reef for snapper, pearlies and cobia or the popular Halls and Sunshine Reefs with the catches of snapper, sweetlip cod and trout at first and last light. For the bait anglers these fish have been taken on pillies, squid and slimy mackeral. Soft plastics and slow fall jigs have also been getting plenty of action. With plenty of mackeral showing up, I would suggest floating a pilchard or small slimy out the back while fishing in these areas. There are also plenty of other mid water species around with tuna cobia - and even the odd dolphin! - all on the chew. So on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures! ●

With reports of water temperatures rising over the last week, good size flathead have been taken on lures and small pilchards with hot spots being around sand banks near the mouth, back of the sound and the entrance to the first lake. Paddle tail soft plastics in the three- and four-inch size have been dynamite on these quality fish, but if you prefer bait, small pilchards on a snooded rigged with two suicide hooks combined when drifting over these areas have taken large fish. Don’t forget dusky flathead have a minimum size of 40cm and a maximum of 75cm with a bag limit being a total of five fish per person. Good numbers of quality whiting have been throughout the river particularly in lower reaches. Surface lures have been the lure of choice for the lure anglers. If using bait live worms and yabbies have been the best producing bait. There has been some Mangrove Jack poking their heads up in a few areas mainly after dark and have been taken on live baits and bonito fillets around the heavy structure. Paddle tail soft plastic in the four-inch size have been perfect for enticing these brutes.
