The editor’s desk The arrival in Warwick of a new disability support service - Quality Lifestyle Support or QLS - as we report on pages 4 and 5 today is great news for people with a disability and their family carers. The need for flexible and individually-tailored supported living is high and local services are struggling. And not to mention parents who care for a child with a disability, many of whom today are ageing and in many cases find it hard to look after themselves. We are an ageing population and these older parents - many of whom are on their own - find it all but impossible to meet the high care needs of a disabled child. As well as the need some clients have for 24/7 supported living, respite care is also vital, to give family members a break when they reach breaking point. We must acknowledge the wonderful work done by support workers in this sector. Their dedication helps people with a disability to live with dignity, receive genuine care and to reach their full potential as individuals. - Jeremy Sollars

THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT… MP IN ICE FIGHT Ice: It’s one of the most destructive and addictive drugs of our time and Maranoa MP David Littleproud has made it his mission to fight this scourge by securing funding to deliver targeted local action on the Granite Belt. “Tackling ice has always been a strong commitment for me as drug and alcohol addiction destroys families and our communities,” Mr Littleproud said. “That’s why the Coalition Federal Government has joined forces with the Community Development Services to deliver targeted local action to help tackle drug use and addiction by forming the Granite Belt Drug Action Team. “Under this program, the Granite Belt Drug Action Team will receive an initial $10,000 in funding to deliver support services in the region.” Across Australia, the Coalition Federal Government will invest $19.2
million in funding to the Alcohol and Drug Foundation for the Local Drug Action Team (LDAT) program and, over the next three years, 220 LDATs will be rolled out. “In Maranoa, an LDAT is active in the Balonne and Blackall-Tambo regions and today the Granite Belt and Paroo Shire teams were announced but I’m also working to secure other targeted local action in other regions in my electorate,” he said. Interested community groups can apply for the next application round, which opens in late 2017. For more Local Drug Action Teams information, visit: www.adf.org.au/ldat A new, web-based toolkit has also been launched providing tailored information for those affected by ice and addiction (including users, community groups, families, friends, teachers and frontline service providers). The Southern Downs Regional Council is facing two new legal battles over planning decisions relating to farming industries. At their August meeting councillors refused an application by Allora’s Layton and Sharalyn Free to develop a feedlot on Warfields Road, on the basis its impacts would be incompatible with the surrounding area. At the same meeting councillors voted in favour of a free range poultry farm on Jack Smith Gully Road at Freestone, applied for by Mark and Rebecca Kinsella, despite a raft of objections from surrounding property owners. Both decisions are now the subject of court appeals against the council’s decisions, with Layton and Sharalyn Free appealing against the council’s refusal of their proposed feedlot, and neighbours of the Kinsellas at Freestone, Matt and Belinda Walker appealing the approval of the poultry farm. Coincidentally, both appeals were lodged with the Planning and Environment Court of Queensland last Wednesday 20 September, and both are represented by Brisbane legal firm QuDA. Layton and Sharalyn Free have declined to comment on their appeal.
Mark and Rebecca Kinsella. The Walkers of Freestone have previously told the Free Times their objections - shared by many of their neighbours who also formally objected to the Kinsella poultry farm and who have spoken to the Free Times - include concerns about the impact of noise, odour and dust from up to 3000 laying hens approved for the Kinsella property. Mark and Rebecca Kinsella told the Free Times earlier this month they would fight any appeal from their neighbours “all the way”. The council normally seeks to resolve planning appeals through negotiation, to avoid a full-blown hearing in the Planning and Environment Court of Queensland. ●

marriage, but utterly eradicating any opinion that does not endorse the radical rainbow agenda. “Our freedom of belief and expression is already under threat, and will be even more so if we let these intolerant thugs win.” Brendon said QR had demanded on Monday 18 September the message be removed “immediately” but that billboard owner Bishopp had negotiated with QR for time to send a crew of workers from Brisbane to remove it. At the time of printing of the Free Times this week it was unclear if the billboard message had been removed, but a statement from QR chief executive officer Nick Easy suggested that it had. Mr Easy said billboards were “managed independently by third party operators, on behalf of Queensland Rail”. “We only became aware of the content on this billboard after receiving a complaint,” he told the Free Times. “Due to the content being outside of our advertising policy, it has been removed.” ●

A Stanthorpe church pastor is furious at a demand by Queensland Rail that the church remove a pro-traditional marriage message from a highway billboard on QR land. Brendon Dunn of the Granite Belt Baptist Church told the Free Times that Queensland Rail ordered the billboard message “supporting biblical marriage” be taken down after QR received “pressure from gay marriage activists”. The billboard, on the New England Highway south of Stanthorpe, reads “Jesus Christ said: God made them male and female - Mark 10:6", and has a graphic of two wedding bands. “On Monday (18 September), just 10 days after being erected, the church was notified that it must be removed,” Brendon told the Free Times last Friday 22 September. “Queensland Rail, on whose land the billboard stands, has allegedly received complaints about the sign, and cites their policy of not permitting political or religious advertising on their property. “However, the church has had a bible verse - Genesis 1:1 - on that same location for two and a half years without any issues. “It is a sad reflection on the state of our nation when the words of Jesus are no longer deemed fit to be displayed in public. “There is no doubt that if it had a rainbow and a “YES" there would be no problem. “This is just another example of the same-sex marriage bullies silencing and intimidating those who hold opposing views. “People need to realise that this is not just about dismantling traditional

“One of the things we’re doing is transitioning young people into independent and shared living. “But under the NDIS it’s all tailored to the needs of the individual, the support we provide is based on whatever their plan covers. “As well as the accommodation and respite and the core supports and community access, we provide activities for the clients. “One day it might be some art and craft, or fishing on a Sunday out at Leslie Dam, swimming or a visit to the park or going for a drive to Stanthorpe or the beach or the movies.“ Donna says she loves learning how to cook, particularly spaghetti Bolognese and loves meeting new friends through QLS activities and “going uptown” for a spot of shopping, and even a disco or two. Gill Totman told the Free Times the service is currently recruiting more support workers in line with its plans for future expansion. ●

sk Donna Shields what she likes the most about supported living service Quality Lifestyle Support and she hoots with laughter and says, “Everything”. Warwick’s new supported living service for people with a disability is helping to fill a growing demand for such supports both here and nationwide. Quality Lifestyle Support (QLS) is based in Toowoomba and is currently providing support through the National Disabilty Insurance Scheme (NDIS) for eight local people in the Warwick area, including Donna. But QLS has big plans for expansion in Warwick great news for people with a disability and their families, particularly those ageing parents who often struggle to care for themselves, let alone adult children with a disability. As it stands now, a lack of such support services in Warwick means families often can only access them in Toowoomba.
QLS is currently on the hunt for suitable properties in Warwick to provide both 24/7 and respite accommodation - including the possible purchase of a small rural property just out of Warwick to develop as a fresh air ‘farmstay’ supported living facility, complete with cows and chooks. The service also assists with things like transport to appointments, ‘core’ supports such as cooking meals and cleaning and helping to find clients employment. For those unfamiliar with the NDIS, the scheme in a nutshell puts the individual first and comes up with a support package to suit individual needs, rather than a ‘one size fits all’ approach to supported living common in the past. Warwick QLS co-ordinator Gill Totman - pictured on our cover today with client Donna Shields - told the Free Times this week the service assesses an individual client’s NDIS ‘plan’ and comes up with a budget which allows their needs to be met through the service with the client’s NDIS funding package. “This includes the hours per day each week they’re supported by us,” Gill explained.

‘ONE OF THE THINGS WE’RE DOING IS TRANSITIONING YOUNG PEOPLE INTO INDEPENDENT AND SHARED LIVING’
n a sunny day in late 1998 on the back steps of a large Toowoomba service’s office, a conversation occurred between two service providers in relation to a lack of support to an individual living within supported accommodation in Toowoomba. The conversation centred on why this individual was unable to receive support due to the fact that they fell outside of pre-determined criteria. Their disability did not match the entry criteria to receive support from one service - even though their needs were identical to many others already in receipt of support. The question posed was - “Wouldn’t it be nice if there was a service that just supported people rather than their disability?” From this simple conversation, Quality Lifestyle Support (QLS) as a concept was born. Within a year, QLS as an organisation was operational and now provides services across the Darling Downs, the Greater Brisbane, Sunshine Coast regions and Gympie regions and Cairns. The plan is to continue to expand in Queensland and northern New South Wales. ●
HOW DOES THE NDIS WORK?
T
he National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) is an independent statutory agency. Its role is to implement the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) which aims to support a better life for hundreds of thousands of Australians with a significant and permanent disability and their families and carers. The NDIS is expected to bring peace of mind for every Australian who has, or might acquire, a disability. The priority is to ensure people with disability continue to get the support they need. The changes that are required to existing disability support systems are significant. Arrangements are being made to ensure the scheme can be introduced gradually, ensuring a smooth transition for people with disability and support providers. For information call the NDIS contact centre on 1800 800 110. The contact centre is open from 8am to 11pm, Monday to Friday and visit www.ndis.gov.au and www.carersqld.asn.au ●
WHO ARE OUR CARERS? · In Australia in 2014 there were 2,694,600 carers, or 12 per cent of the population. · Of those 769,800 were primary carers, and 70 per cent of primary carers and 56 per cent of all carers in Australia were women. · 12 per cent of carers were aged under 24 and eight per cent were aged 75 and over. · In 2014, some 4,234,200 Australians had a disability - almost one fifth of the population. ●

INLAND RAIL ROUTE SLAMMED BY MP BY JEREMY SOLLARS Federal member for Maranoa David Littleproud has broken ranks with his political colleagues to denounce the proposed inland rail route through Millmerran. Warwick will, as predicted, be bypassed by the Melbourne to Brisbane inland railway, with the final route announced last week by the Federal Government. As was expected - and more than likely decided on by the government a year or more ago - the line will run through Millmerran and across the Condamine River floodplain and on to Toowoomba, including Wellcamp Airport. This is despite warnings from farmers about the fragmentation of prime agricultural land and devastating future flooding resulting from the building of massive embankments to carry the line over the floodplain. David Littleproud slammed the decision, telling the Free Times he’s the only federal politician to oppose that section of the route. Federal Infrastructure Minister Darren Chester has written to residents informing them of his decision, which he officially announced in Toowoomba last Thursday 21 September. Mr Littleproud said neither Mr Chester’s department nor project driver the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) had an engineering solution to the
floodplain issue, claiming they would have to look overseas as nothing of this scale has been done before in Australia. “I don’t support the decision, and I’m disappointed with it,” he said. “I was able to negotiate for the opportunity for supporters of the Warwick corridor to put their case and a route through Karara and Leyburn and then north of Warwick would have less of an agricultural and environment impact.” An announcement on the final inland rail route had been expected earlier this year, but landholder concerns prompted a Federal Government ‘review’ of the Millmerran and other proposed routes. But many believe the review was merely window dressing, and the Millmerran route - preferred since 2010 by the ARTC Corporation - was always going to happen, even though their original route bypassed Wellcamp Airport. The Wagner family, which owns the airport, had promised to invest millions to create a road-rail-air transport hub geared towards food and agricultural produce if the rail corridor was shifted closer to their airport, which it now has been. Toowoomba’s Mayor Paul Antonio has again been drawn into the issue, with farmers claiming he stands to make millions from the inland rail, thanks to a quarry he owns in the Millmerran area- claims Cr Antonio has denied. Last year, when questioned by the Free Times he said his interests were “available
for all to see on council’s pecuniary interests register”. “The Australian Rail Track Corporation has been given a task by the Federal Government to deliver the most efficient route between Melbourne and Brisbane,” he said at the time. “They are using international expertise in engineering and hydrology to ensure the best possible outcome.” Minister Chester has said the relative cost and transit time of the Millmerran route were factors in making the decision, but he acknowledged “this decision will be disappointing for some“ and “has not been taken lightly". “While cost is not the overriding factor in decision-making for the preferred alignment, the Wellcamp-Charlton option has the lowest incremental cost," Mr Chester said. “It also offers the shortest transit time." Warwick’s inland rail proponents had favoured a loop on existing lines from Inglewood to the east through Karara to just north of Warwick - in the Toolburra Plains area between Warwick and Allora - rather than the Millmerran option. They also argued taking the route this way would enable the existing line north of Warwick and through Clifton, Greenmount, Cambooya and Wyreema to be extended to take in Wellcamp Airport and then on to Gowrie. Comment on the announcement was sought from the Southern Downs Regional
Council by the Free Times, but none had been received before printing deadlines for this week’s edition. ●

Councillors at their meeting in Stanthorpe on 20 September voted to move to a “refined tender process” after calling for expressions of interest (EOIs) for leasing out of the saleyards. A council statement issued last Friday 22 September referred to a “preferred respondent” from the EOI process but does not name the interested party. The move to the next stage of the process follows ameeting of the council’s Saleyards Advisory Committee on Thursday 7 September, the minutes of which were adopted by councillors in a confidential session of last week's council meeting. “At (the September general meeting) Southern Downs Regional Council confirmed its commitment to the Expressions of Interest for the management of the Warwick Saleyards process by adopting the minutes of the Saleyards Advisory Committee,” last Friday’s statement said. “The recommendation of the committee means that the Expression of Interest process for the management of the saleyards will now move to a refined tender process. “Council reiterates that the saleyards are not for sale. “This process will allow the committee and council to further explore how the private sector might be able to improve efficiency and ensure competitive prices to producers and sellers.” Mayor Tracy Dobie said in the statement that
The Warwick Saleyards. while council had run the saleyards effectively to this point, “that professional experienced management is necessary to ensure best practice”. “Competitive pricing remains a priority for council, as competitors to both the north and south of Warwick are undertaking major upgrades to their facilities, including a $14 million facility upgrade at Casino. “Council also believes the saleyards have a unique opportunity to demonstrate the high quality of local produce on display, supporting the agricultural sector, which is the biggest contributor to the local economy. “Over the next few months, the preferred respondent in the Expressions of Interest process will be requested to respond to issues raised by the council and the Saleyards Advisory Committee. “At the end of the tender process, council can choose to issue the tender, or cease the process. “It is important that the Warwick Saleyards function effectively, remain competitive and continues to prosper.” ●
CORRUPTION ACCUSED RESIGNS FROM CREDIT UNION BOARD Warwick Credit Union has confirmed that Jim Lindsay has resigned from his role as a board member. As reported in the Free Times Mr Lindsay was earlier this month charged with official corruption in his role as chief executive officer of Ipswich City Council following a Crime and Corruption Commission probe. Up until Monday 18 September Mr Lindsay was a serving member of the board Jim Lindsay. of Warwick Credit Union, with a spokesman confirming to the Free Times that Mr Lindsay resigned from that position on that day. Mr Lindsay - who has been stood aside from his role as CEO of Ipswich City Council - was arrested by CCC investigators on Thursday 14 September and charged with one count of official corruption. Mr Lindsay was the assistant general manager of Warwick Credit Union from June 2003 to December 2006, prior to which he was director of Finance and Corporate Services with the former Warwick Shire Council from 1995. He is due to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates' Court on Wednesday 11 October. The CCC investigation into Ipswich City Council has so far also resulted in extortion and other charges being brought against former Ipswich mayor Paul Pisasale and a misconduct charge against Ipswich City Council’s chief operating officer of works, parks and recreation Paul Mausley. Former Southern Downs Regional Council chief executive officer Andrew Roach is Ipswich City Council’s current chief financial officer. ● Jeremy Sollars

NEWS AFP HATCHED FROM THE EGGS HURLED AT PM BY JEREMY SOLLARS They’ve found a Billy Hughes - but organisers of the upcoming re-enactment of Warwick’s famous ‘egg-throwing incident’ are still looking for a number of other performers. The Warwick Community Performing Arts Group is behind plans for the reenactment of the incident 100 years after it took place, on 29 November at the Warwick railway station. For the non-local or the uninitiated, Prime Minister Billy Hughes was pelted
with an egg at the Warwick railway station on the date in question in 1917 over his pro-conscription stance, during a whistle stop tour promoting the ‘Yes’ vote for the second conscription referendum in December 1917. The culprit was Patrick Brosnan - an egg thrown by either his brother Bertie or a mate missed its target - and the incident led to the formation of the Australian Federal Police, after local coppers refused to come to the aid of an incensed Hughes. Peter von Stieglitz will play Billy
Hughes and the role of Senior Sergeant Kenny will be played by Vic Foote, with Guy Gibson set to hurl the famous egg as Pat Brosnan. Jessica Goodlet is the narrator, but the organisers are still seeking an extra policeman and non-speaking crowd members. Those interested in performing are asked to contact Clare McHugh Von Stieglitz on 0437 863 886, or email claremcvs@gmail.com, or message the Facebook group ‘Warwick Community Performing Arts”. ●

ALPACAS SLAUGHTERED Wallangarra police are continuing to investigate what is believed to be the point-blank shooting of a group of alpacas on a Lyra property south of Stanthorpe on the night of Sunday 24 September. Police say seven dead alpacas were located on a property on Curtin Road, with six of them found in a nearby creek and one near the residence on the property. The animals in the creek had to be removed by a tractor to avoid contamination of the watercourse. The owners of the property were away at the time. Other animals on the property were unharmed. No arrests have yet been made, and anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or the Wallangarra police on 4684 3120. ●

STASH OF FIREARMS UNEARTHED A huge stash of unregistered firearms was discovered last week on a Tenterfield property after a cross-border police operation. New South Wales Police Force’s Firearms Squad executed a search warrant at a property at Tenterfield, about 7.20am on Wednesday 20 September. The search warrant related to a Queensland Police Service investigation, and was executed on their behalf. During the search, police located and seized 73 long arms, a crudely manufactured .22 calibre bolt-action pistol, a replica revolver, and 200 rounds of ammunition of various calibres. Police also searched a vehicle at the location, where they located and seized three further firearms, one of which was loaded. None of the firearms are believed to be registered and not being safely stored. A 67-year-old man was spoken to at the location, and his firearms licence has been suspended pending further inquiries. ● freetimes.com.au

Introducing Kerry and David Fearby of Warwick Sand and Gravel are pleased to offer local garden enthusiasts the ‘Earthlife’ range of soil conditioners, manufactured in Toowoomba. The business is now a ‘one stop shop’ for your garden soil, compost, mulch and soil conditioning needs.
THEY’VE GOT THE LOT IN THE SOILS Whether you’re a weekend warrior on the hunt for materials for the next backyard blitz or a commercial contractor, Warwick Sand and Gravel is the one-stop destination of choice. And they now stock a popular range of ‘Earthlife’ Garden Care Rock Minerals to complement their existing gardening products, which include garden mulch, garden bed soil and compost. Earthlife products are microbial rock minerals-based soil conditioners which contain more than 30 beneficial microbe and fungal strains, plus enzymes, humates and organic acids added into the mix. Earthlife’s microbial rock minerals represent “time in a bucket” - in nature, glaciers pound rocks to dust to replenish lost minerals and nutrients in the soil. Microbes, enzymes and organic acids then solubilise then feed the nutrients and minerals to plant life. Earthlife’s products do the same - only faster. The Earthlife range now available at Warwick Sand and Gravel includes conditioners tailored for general garden application along with Aussie natives, fruit and flower blends, a lawn blend and ‘Veggie Mate’, along with a ‘Mulch Mate’ and a
weed-fighting application. One notable local Earthlife devotee is well-known and much-awarded rose grower Annette Russell, and the products are also used by local landscapers. Warwick Sand and Gravel owners David and Kerry Fearby are pleased to offer Earthlife products to their customers, with Earthlife having previously been available at Baringa Nursery. David and Kerry and their staff will help attend to all of your sand and gravel requirements - and they offer truck and loader hire. They also have a tip truck for the “smaller” delivery jobs and those in tight spots, with the truck affectionately dubbed ‘Watty’ after former owner of the business Peter Watt. Warwick Sand and Gravel is a quality supplier of pine bark, garden blend, various garden mulches, mushroom compost, building supplies, landscape supplies, bagged cement, quarry products, and decorative pebbles. Contact David Fearby on 0428 648 095 or visit Warwick Sand and Gravel just off Yangan Road at 11 Briggs Street, Warwick. ●

FLASHBACK TO THOSE SWINGING ’60S The Swinging ’60s display of clothing and memorabilia by Deanne Selle had Cynthia Willi, an old school friend and Gail Campbell her former Inglewood neighbour, reminiscing about life during the ’60s. All the dresses on display at the Pringle Cottage, Eastwell Hall on Dragon St are either handmade in Inglewood or by Australian designers. Deanne Selle and her husband made 1968 the year to travel by ship to see the world. All the outfits were chosen for formal wear on board. Many have been altered over the years to wear at different occasions. There is a safari linen suit on display, very typical of the ’60s and I wonder why such a sensible outfit did not stand the test of time.

White flowers in a garden make all other colours appear more vibrant by contrast. At present the stand out flower in many gardens in the area is the African daisy with its bright white, blue-centred flowers. One of the other common names for them is the blue eyed daisy. The name explains their origin and flower type well. It does come in a range of other colours from cream though orange and red and these days also in frilly centred doubles seen in catalogues recently. My favourite would have to be the profusely flowering common variety. It seems to thrive everywhere and can be relied on to put on a great show at this time of year. The surprise element of not quite knowing where they will pop up in the garden each year and just what colour they are going to be, delights me. ●

THE SPIN
SENSATIONAL ENDS TO BOTH CODES He was public enemy number one during the India /Australia series several years ago after the “monkey" taunts directed to Andrew Symons. Now veteran off spinner Harbhajan Singh is again rubbing Aussies up the wrong way. This week he mocked the current crop of Australian cricketers declaring the Australian side lacked “quality". His suggestion to fix the immediate problem was a call for former Australian captain Michael Clarke to “come out of retirement". On Monday he said the era of producing top class batsmen Down Under is over. “Mate u need to come out of your retirement and start playing again. I think era of Aussies producing top batsmen is over. I feel no quality," Harbhajan tweeted. Not a tweet as momentous as some of Donald Trump’s, but sure to attract the ire of some past and present Aussie players. A subtle reminder that the summer of cricket must be just around the corner. - Casey FINALS FLLED WITH FAIRYTALES The dress rehearsals are over and now we are left with the best we are only a couple of sleeps away from the main dance in both AFL and NRL. What grand finals we are in for. There is more than the hint of a fairytale around whoever wins the AFL flag on Saturday. It's 30 plus years since the Tigers roared in victory and for the Adelaide Crows reward for coming out the otherside of a tragic year in 2016. On Monday night the best and brightest of the AFL attended the Brownlow Medal and there was little doubt who would win according to punters and players. Dusty Martin started as short as Winx in a mid week maiden with his main rival Patty Dangerfield ruled out of the race after copping a suspension at the back end of the season. In the end the tipsters were correct and Martin polled highest - in fact one of the highest votes ever polled to take the prestigious award. He adds the Brownlow to a swag of awards this season and there is just one missing and that is a premiership. Perhaps, on Saturday his set will be complete. The Tigers could not have been more impressive against GWS last weekend. Almost as impressive as the form team of the competition the Crows were in savaging the Cats. The Tigers fans were an awesome sight at the “G" last weekend but won’t have it all their own way on Saturday. In a tight game my heart is hoping the Tigers - form leans towards the Crows. With an early deadline, we do not know the result of the Dally M as this column is finalised. I am hoping as in the Brownlow, the Dally M goes the way of the favourite, Cameron Smith. On Sunday it is the last waltz of the season for Melbourne and the Cowboys. And wow the stories and sub-plots here are amazing. Will it be Cooper Cronk’s swansong? will Billy hang up the boots in favour of his beloved thoroughbreds? There is the battle of the Innisfail boys - Slater v Bolton. Can Cam inspire and lead this champion side of champions to just one more win this season or will the fairy god mother sprinkle more fairy dust on the Cowboys and deliver the impossible? In a game where the score line was not 18 SOUTHERN FREE TIMES

a reflection of the quality of the game, Melbourne held Brisbane scoreless in their preliminary final. Brisbane coach Wayne Bennett declared the Storm just “too good" and anointed them as premiership winners. But are Paul Green’s brave men from NQ set to be the first team to come from eighth (some say outside the eight) to hoist the trophy? One thing you can be sure of they there are 17 Cowboys players and a couple of champions on the sideline who believe anything is possible. The Cowboys win over the Roosters must go down as one of the bravest games of football I have watched. It was heart in your mouth theatre. Full of guts determination and a never say die attitude. There were many heroes in this battle, Michael Morgan of course who may have had a transfusion of some of that ice that runs through Cam Smith’s veins. Try scoring whiz Kyle Feldt, the Big JT, Justin O’Neill, Scott Bolton and my personal favourite the Gundy born Ethan Lowe who would not look out of place in a green and gold jersey in the coming weeks are but a few. In fact count in the whole 17. Who will win on Sunday - I daren’t even contemplate. On paper you would say the Storm should. They will wear the favourites tag for a good reason, but it would be a foolish person to write of the NQlanders. Both would be worthy winners and I may be proved wrong, but I doubt we will see a runaway winner. If the Cowboys can stay in the grind, they are the best finishers I can recall. Melbourne if they bring their A game are almost unbeatable. My heart says Cowboys - my head says Storm and really I don’t care either way. The prospect is mouth watering. Unfortunately, there has to be a winner and loser but whoever wins there will be enough magic to go around. What a sensational way to end the season in both codes. KERRSISTENCY Consistency was the key to Alan Kerr’s round in the Single Stableford at the Stanthorpe Golf Club on Saturday. Kerr scored 23 points on the outward nine and almost matched that with 21 points on the back. It was a steady score that earned him a win in the event. Three players returned scores of 42 points for the runner-up position, and after a countback Keith Allen got the decision. Mark McCosker was also hitting the ball well. He claimed the pin shot at three, a pro-pin at 9/18 as well as the birdies nest at 15. Mick O’Brien held the pin at 12 while 17 went unclaimed. Mark Hendry held the pro-pin at 1/10. Kay Webb returned 41 points to win the Ladies event. Her score was just enough to hold out Lyn Ludlow who returned 40 points. Webb also had the best second shot at 5/14 to claim that pro-pin. Shaneen McLellan won the ladies pin at 12 and Rachael Hendry held best approach at 17. Greg Yap (42), David Burgess (42), Trevor Ludlow (41), Tom Fittock (40), Tric Fittock (39) and Lorraine Evans (38) each collected a ball in the run down. Thanks to the sponsors of the day, Eric McLellan and Shaneen McLellan who returned to Stanthorpe in time for the day. The scores for 'Golfer of the Year’ have been updated. They were posted on the notice board at the club last weekend. As the next issue will be at the end of the current

season, players can check the current standings to see if they are (or aren’t) in the running for the award. A reminder that the Mixed Foursomes Championships will be held on Sunday 8 October, so there is still plenty of time to arrange your partners for the event. Unlike other foursomes, this one will most likely be played over 27 holes. This Saturday a Canadian Foursome is scheduled and play will be for the Howard and Sons Cups. The event will be sponsored by Howard and Sons and Mitre 10. It is the last weekend of the month therefore tee off is a shot gun start at 11.45 am. Registration must be completed by 11.30 am. PLENTY HAPPENING ON THE TANNY GREENS The Tannymorel Bowls Club celebrated a big week of bowls with the Tanny Triples and Burmester memorial decided. The successful team in the Tanny Triples was Greg Dent, Don Clouten and Gordie Assay. Mike O’Leary, Matty Shepherd and Pete Gynther finished runners-up. the eventual winners had a big win over John Griffiths, Alan Buse and Jean Calam. The final score 21-6. The runners-up defeated Marg Martin, Yvonne Campbell and Wendy Nerney 1713. In other results, Barb Cross, Gazza Penn and Greg Cross drew 12 all with Brian Walsh, Marg Thompson and Myrtle Wagner. P. Supelt, I. Campbell and Ed Welsh had a 12-6 win in their game against V. T. Seinger, P. Wagner and M. Holder. The Summit crew defeated Sue Butz, Geoff Creighton and Grumpy 11-9 while the team of Prickles Geoff Davis and Johno Johnson had a 23-6 win over Tuck M. Wright and Pete Collis. In the second round, skips only, the skip of the winning crew, Greg Dent continued on the winning path and defeated Myrtle Wagner 12-8 to wrap up the overall win for his team. Jean Calam had a win over the Summit skip while Johno Johnson posted an 18-9 win over Ed Welsh. Mick O’Leary comfortably defeated Pete Collis 11-6, while Greg Cross had a 15-10 win over Grumpy and Wendy Nerney showed Max Holder a clean set of heels winning their game 13-5. It was a great day with some great bowls played - well done to everyone who made this another successful Tanny event. On Saturday, the club celebrated the Vern Burmester Memorial day. It was another successful event with a full green of players and the teams selected by the Burmester family. Eventual winners were the team of Kim Creighton, Kev Creighton, Brian Walsh and Gordie Assay. The runners-up were Cam Larfield, Di Walsh, Leanne Smith and Gazza Penn. The “horses rear" award went Dave Crump, Jenny Crook, Myrtle and Geoff Creighton. The overall winners defeated Dave Crump, Jenny Crook, Myrtle and Geoff Creighton 22-13. Cam Larfield, Di Walsh, Lenny Smith and Penny also had a 22-13 win over Deb Brown, Jeff Kay, Jane Domjahn and Francis Lyons. In the remaining games Lyn Coleman, Rossco and Burt defeated Hugh, Shazza, Gav O’Leary and Crocodile 20-12. Courtney Millelsen, Mitch Smith and Thommo had a 16-12 win over Shane
Roberts, Al Buse and BP. In a tight game Kenny, Julie Buse, Shep and Don Clouten scored a narrow 16-15 over Rebecca, Kacie Kay, Dave Butz and BP. Daniel, Quinton Coleman, Rob Lechmer and Jack Peasnell had no answers to counter their opposition and went down 21-9 to Jane Walsham, Kerry, Ron Washbourne and Mavis Lawarden. Courtney and Cory Burmester, Tim Crook and Sue Butz has a 14-8 win over Thomasin Keogh, Ben Matty and Ash Coleman. Following the fun on the green, players enjoyed a beautiful meal, raffles, plenty of hilarity and some not so good singing which indicated a few people should stick with their day jobs. The club extends a big thank you to the Burmester family; it was a day Jean and Vern Burmester would have been proud of. A reminder that the next round of the popular Tanny Classic gets underway on 6 October. Be sure to get your name in and have six weeks of fun and games and the chance to win some great cash prizes.
Ebony Privitera of Coolmunda shows her style last weekend on the Inglewood range. TWO DAYS OF COMEPITTION ON THE RANGE The Inglewood Sporting Shooters held two days of competition last weekend with Pistol and Rifle competitions held on Saturday and Sunday. In the Pistol event on Saturday, honours went to Monika White outscored Richard White and Wal Shepherd. In the Benchrest Rimfire, it was Ray Dudgeon who was on target. He outpointed Wal Shepherd and Ross Jackson to take out the event. On Sunday the Rimfire event was won by Peter Jones who relegated Saturday’s winner Ray Dudgeon to a minor placing with Lynne Shepherd filling third spot. Monika White continued her good form from the previous day to win the Centrefire. Once again it was Richard White and Wal Shepherd who filled the minor placing. In the Benchrest event, Ray Dudgeon got a win over Wal Shepherd and Tom Donald. This Sunday is the club’s scheduled clay target shoot followed by pistol practice of Rimfire Benchrest. A reminder that on 14 and 15 October the Inglewood Sporting Shooters will be hosting the Qld State Muzzle Loading Championships. Visitors are most welcome but the range will be open only to those shooters competing in the championships. You can keep up with all the action on the club’s Facebook page. freetimes.com.au

WIN FOR WATTS Bob Watts scored a well-deserved win at Sporters in Stanthorpe on Sunday after returning a winning round. John Rawlings finished just a few shots back to the balls on offer for the runner-up. Paul Armstrong returned the Best gross of the round scoring 40 for the nine holes. Armstrong also collected the prize for the pro-pin at 14. In the run down, Ian Anderson and Phil Zikan went home with a ball for their efforts. Pin shots were won by Aaron Simmers at 12 and Jim McPherson at 17. Both Phil Zikan and Aaron Simmers can host a barbecue after collecting a meat tray each in the raffle. Sporters golf is held each Sunday with tee off at 8am, and all are welcome to come along and have a hit and a laugh. TOURMENT CONTINUES The torment that is cricket on the subcontinent continues for the Australian cricketers. A five-wicket win in the third game of the current ODI series has handed India an unassailable 3-0 lead over the Aussies. On one hand the win also stretches India’s winning streak to a record 12 matches across all formats. India have won 10 of their 13 Tests on home soil in the 2016-17 season. The current results are a worry for the Aussies and their fans as they continue their losing streak in the ODI format that they not long ago dominated. With the upcoming Test series around the corner, there are plenty of raised eyebrows and questions to be answered around the form and make-up of the side. Australian spinner Ashton Agar will return home after it was confirmed he suffered a broken finger in the last game. Steve Smith’s arch rival Indian Captain Virat Kohli has called on his players to be
“ruthless" after the crushing one-day series win over Australia took India top of the world one-day rankings to add to their number one Test status. The Indian side has been on a roll for the past year since regaining the number one Test spot with a 3-0 home whitewash of New Zealand. Kohli has led from the front with 1137 runs in 21 50-over matches this year, the highest one-day scorer in 2017. Kohli praised his team after the latest win against the once mighty Australians, who have been outplayed in India. The Aussies have some soul searching to do after also losing a 1-2 in India this year and their recent loss to Bangladesh in the first of the two game series in that country. COMEPTITIVE GAMES A small but competitive group of association croquet players enjoyed great conditions on the court last week. Jenny Tunbridge won her game against Grace Howard and Val Shepherd with a score of 26 which included two breaks of three. Andrea Denkewitz and Heather Widderick played well, but lost in a tight game to Pat Schnoor. The final score 23-22. Pat played very well and had one great break of seven. Margaret Dickenson, meanwhile, took on a coaching role showing new comer Peter (Barney) the ropes. Numbers were also down last week at golf croquet with several players suffering ill health or other commitments and two shorter games were played. In ideal conditions, the first game was won by Elaine Brown and Teresa Pyne. They had a win over Justin Liddy and Shirley Page. After the break ,the group swapped partners and Teresa Pyne and Justin Liddy combined for a narrow 6- win over Shirley Page and Elaine Brown. Teresa Pyne had
the best combined score of nine on the day. BIG SCORES IN GATEBALL GAMES There were some big scores in several of the gateball games played on Friday. Bill Golding, Les Williams, Sharyn Roser and Grace Howard formed team one and played team two, Pat Schnoor, Val Fancourt, Jenny Tunbridge and Margaret Dickenson in four games. It was Team Two who got off to a winning start opening with a win of 16-8. Margaret Dickenson starred in this game, playing some great shots. Unfortunately for Team Two it was all one way traffic for some time after that game and they were in the wrong lane. Team One clicked into gear to win the second game 17-8. They then scored 13 points to their opponents 10 in the following game. The final game was the closest of the day. It bounced back to take a 10-6 win. Bill Golding was the Player of the Day taking every opportunity to spark opponents out and making some very excellent long shots. he competed in the Australian Sprint Championships at the Charles Sturt University at Bathurst finishing third in the M20E class in a field of 39. He followed up Saturday’s run with a fifth in the Australian Middle Distance Championships at Hill End, north west of Bathurst. Burrill a member of the Bullecourt Bounders is building an impressive orienteering resume having competed in three World Championships and several Australian and State Championships. Another member of the Bullecourt Bounders, Jaiden Fidge also competed last weekend finishing ninth in the M16A class at the sprint championships. In a field of 40 Fidge finished in 11th place in the middle distance event. Fidge will be competed in the Australian Schools Individual Championships on Tuesday in Cowra, the sprint championships in Bathurst Wednesday and the relay championships on Thursday. ENGLAND SELECTORS CONUNDRUM While the Aussies battle India and the conditions on the sub continent, the Poms are set to announce their Ashes squad this week. Despite recent wins over South Africa and the Windies there is still a state of flux over the make-up of the side to tour Australia. England have had a season of crushing victories and heavy losses. Often winning because of their ability to bat so deep in to the line up. Stokes and Moeen Ali have had stellar season and are shaping as two of their best-ever all-rounders. The top order has been less convincing. Alastair Cook and captain Joe Root are certain to play in the first Test at the Gabba on 23 November, but aside from that there are plenty of question marks. ●
