Hats off to the unlikely heroes By Cam Lucadou-Wells We all know what Pauline Hanson thinks of burqas. So what do you think will happen if Ms Hanson came face-to-face with a burqaclad woman on stage? And perhaps, throw in a masked Australian ‘hero’ such as Ned Kelly. This charged scenario has been conceived by writer and teacher Kuranda Seyit in his original play The Gang, which will be performed in a one-off show in Dandenong. “I’d been thinking about how Ned Kelly is Australia’s national icon and just about everyone sees him as a hero, yet he was famous for wearing a mask, similar to a burqa. Then the thought struck me why not have Ned, a Burqa clad woman and Pauline Hanson all in the same room, discussing the issues?” In one of the play’s satiric moments, Pauline Hanson succumbs to her “inner Muslim” and indulges in a Halal Snack Pack (HSP), Mr Seyit says. The play is also about two young Muslim characters - Tarik, who is pressured to join a criminal gang, and Nadia, who considers taking off her hijab to avoid Islamophobic attack.

n $35,000 fine for one of the worst food premises...

Filth in the store By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Noble Park food business owner has been convicted for what a magistrate described as some of the worst food safety and hygiene offences he’d seen. Mohammed Naim Azdari, 42, faced 17 charges with a cumulative minimum $680,000 in fines for the filthy state of his fruit and vegetables business, Noble Park Fruit Mart in Douglas Street. In April, a neighbouring business had complained about a strong smell, rotting food, increased flies and rats at the premises. A Greater Dandenong inspector was said to have “gagged” while opening orange garbage bins of waste meat during the first inspection on 20 April.

“I hope Your Honour will go nowhere near those limits.” Mr Scultz said his sentence needed to reflect the “grave public concern”, the need to deter other food vendors but not a fine that would crush Azdari. It showed either a “flagrant disregard” for food standards or that he’d been an “absentee manager”. “Other business owners particularly in the food handling area are under a very onerous obligation to the community in large. “It was there but by the grace of God, no-one suffered a food poisoning incident that we’re aware of. “Mr Azdari, I’ve seen a lot of photos of premises ... yours rank amongst the worst.” Azdari was convicted and fined $35,000.

Magistrate Barry Schultz retorted: “Even with a cursory look at the photos, one would not need an expert adviser. “It’s confronting to say the least. “Blind Freddy would know that couldn’t comply.” Azdari had later told inspectors that the sewerage pipe was fixed but failed to provide a plumbing report as requested. He’d spent $15,000 to repair the pipe, his lawyer told the court. The accused, who had worked in food businesses in Afghanistan and Melbourne since 2000, was “not a wealthy man”. “Those (potential) fines are suffice to give people a heart attack,” he said.

She was told by the person-in-charge ‘Roy’ that the bins had “been like that since Easter” which was four days earlier. The next day, inspectors discovered an orange bin’s contents being turned into the gutter. Among the litany of problems was a broken sewerage pipe on the roof, blood, dirt and meat residue in the cool room and dead insects and food residue throughout the premises. There was also evidence that workers weren’t washing their hands at the basin, as well as uncovered meat stored under a bench. Azdari’s lawyer told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 28 September a food safety adviser had been since hired to fix the problems.

Wheel basketball in hoop dreams By Brendan Rees

It’s not easy for riders By Cam Lucadou-Wells Motorcyclists are up in arms over rough surfaces, potholes and hazardous conditions on the M1 freeway during the ongoing upgrade project. Berwick rider Todd Curtis said the litany of hazards on the road caused different degrees of shuddering and tracking while driving his car. For motorcyclists, the dangers were much heightened. Long gouges in the road that were parallel and divots as wide as a motorcycle’s front tyre could “grab” at a bike’s tyres and re-direct the bike. There are also sections of “tar islands”, uneven levels between lanes and extreme differences between old and new surfaces. Mr Curtis also noted non-textured steel cover plates that were slippery in the wet, as well as potholes. The worst issues were outbound near the Josephine Avenue overpass, Mr Curtis said. It caused cars moving lanes to avoid the worst sections. At worst, riders would have to veer from cars dodging the areas. Mr Curtis had been “palmed off ” between VicRoads and project sub-contractors Fulton Hogan since he raised a litany of safety issues between Hallam and Pakenham early this year. Despite being assured that a safety team inspected the length of the freeway each day, the issues have remained largely unfixed. “There are a number of items that have been attended to but the number of issues being created by the ongoing work are causing more and more problems,” Mr Curtis said.

A patchy section of the freeway during the upgrade project near Josephine Avenue. 173206 “It seems that issues that are raised by car drivers (such as potholes) are attended to reasonably quickly, but those that were raised by myself are still outstanding.” In desperation, Mr Curtis put up a public post on the Netrider web forum in April to alert other riders to the dangers. A rider responded about the “horrible” surface. He was “tracking all over the joint” and slipping on “massive steel cover plates” that weren’t preceded by any warning signs. “They make us pariahs with one hand and then give us roads designed to kill us.” Another complained of his bike being guided into construction barriers by the road’s uneven grading.

Since then, Mr Curtis and the Victorian Motorcycle Council had a receptive meeting with VicRoads and the project’s contractor in July which led to more ‘Rough Surface’ warning signage being installed. A maintenance plan was also created to fix the identified issues. A new asphalt surface is expected to start being installed before the end of 2017. This week, some of the problem sections had been freshly sealed. “There was great surprise about some of the issues raised,” Mr Curtis said. “They assured us that they would look into them, promises were made and to this day none have been actioned.” Victorian Motorcylcle Council’s Rob Salvatore said the conditions were potentially dangerous for inexperienced and unsuspecting riders. The meeting was positive, and follow-up action had been implemented, he said. VicRoads south-eastern projects director Ray Peterson said the top layer of asphalt had been removed in widened sections. It was done to allow traffic to travel closer to the freeway’s permanent concrete barriers. “We have worked with the Victorian Motorcycle Council to install signage and inform all road users of works happening on the Monash. “We encourage everyone to ride or drive to the conditions and obey road signs.” The freeway upgrade project, which widens the freeway both ways between EastLink and Clyde Road, started in September 2016. It is expected to be completed in 2018.

A new wheelchair basketball program in Casey is inspiring people of any age and ability to chase their dreams of becoming a Paralympian. Run by Casey Basketball at Casey Stadium, sessions will include teaching individuals how to pick the ball up, shoot from a sitting position and even try to dribble down the court. Founder of Helping Hand Is Here and Your Ability, Michelle Jankovic introduced the idea of bringing the sport to Casey four months ago after being inspired by her son, who plays competition wheelchair basketball. “I am very passionate about individuals with medical challenges succeeding in whatever dream they have. My 15-year-old son being born eight weeks premature, resulting in cerebral palsy, really gives me the drive to make wheelchair basketball a natural addition all basketball clubs should run,” she said. She said anyone was welcome to play: “People who use wheelchairs all the time: paraplegia, spina bifida, and spinal cord injury - anyone who uses a chair. “People who use wheelchairs some of the time: lower limb amputees, cerebral palsy, incomplete spinal cord injury, muscle weakness. And people who don’t use chairs at all: unrepairable ligament damage, knee or hip replacement, fractures to the knee or ankle joint, multiple joint fusions, knee or ankle reconstructions, anyone with a disability or injury.” Casey Basketball Association spokesperson Ashley Szalek said the Casey Basketball Association was excited to bring wheelchair basketball to the local community. “Working closely with Basketball Victoria, we have managed to secure 10 wheelchairs from Ballarat Basketball on a temporary basis, while we seek funding to purchase 10 chairs of our own. Each chair can cost as little as $1000,” he said. There are several members, he said, that were no longer able to participate in the sport they loved due to disability, injury, age or ill-health. “Wheelchair basketball will give these members of the community the opportunity to get back involved, keep active and in some instances, rise through the ranks of wheelchair basketball as a pathway for the Paralympics.” Casey Basketball will be running training programs and competitions every Tuesday at Casey Stadium. Casey Basketball will run wheelchair basketball training on Tuesday nights. For further information or if you are interesting sponsoring a chair, contact Casey Basketball on 03 5996 6033 or website development@caseybasketball.com.au.

Wheelchair basketball has arrived in Casey and people are encouraged to attend sessions. 173362 Picture: CONTRIBUTED

Big church green light By Cam Lucadou-Wells A church almost three times taller than the Green Wedge Zone’s preferred height limit has been controversially approved in Lyndhurst. The proposed Coptic church at a rural setting in 785 Thompsons Road was passed during a heated debate at Greater Dandenong Council, in which a Greens councillor reacted angrily to an accusation of being opposed to Christian places of worship. The church for up to 500 worshippers would have towers of up to 23 metres tall, with a multipurpose hall, indoor plant nursery, soccer pitch, horse stables, a priest/caretaker’s dwelling and 150-space car park. Its 13-metre main building is well above the zone’s preferred eight-metre height limit. At a 25 September meeting, Cr Matthew Kirwan said the council would further damage its reputation by approving the project after a lot of recent “bad press” of its Green Wedge decisions. He said he supported large churches, temples and mosques and community centres if they are “beneficially” located, such as in a residential zone. “It’s a case of a good church in the wrong place,” he said.

He said places of worship were permitted in the zone but not such a “massive building” that would dominate the area’s rural character. “(This is) something that should be in Springvale or Noble Park or Dandenong North - not in the middle of nowhere in the isolated backblocks of Lyndhurst.” “This won’t just dominate the landscape as buildings in the Green Wedge are not meant to do, it will dwarf everything else.” Cr Kirwan said the council could expect another intervention by state Planning Minister Richard Wynne, who recently blocked the council’s approval of a “produce market” in Bangholme’s Green Wedge. Cr Tim Dark claimed Cr Kirwan had no objection to mosques or community centres “but this is a church” - an accusation that was quashed by a point of order. Cr Zaynoun Melhem told Cr Kirwan: “It’s not up to us to tell the Coptic Church how to design their church”. He said the church - part of the oldest church denomination in the world - was an allowed use, and there were already four places of worship in Greater Dandenong’s Green Wedge. It would be the only Coptic Church in Greater Dandenong to serve its strong following in the

municipality. It would be located near “thousands of people” set to move into nearby housing estates under the Thompsons Road Precinct Structure Plan. Cr Melhem said the applicant had changed the landscaping, car park and siting of structures to provide a less imposing proposal. “It’s a no-brainer,” he said. “We do want community soccer pitches, we do want places to congregate ... we want places with lots of car-parking.” City planning director Jody Bosman told the meeting the Green Wedge’s preferred eight-metre height limit was designed to maintain an appropriate “open sky vista” but wasn’t “proscriptive”. Objector Barry Ross, of Defenders of the South-East Green Wedge, said the group would lodge an appeal at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Triburnal. “We are very disappointed that the officer’s report and those councillors who supported the proposal so readily dismissed the recommendations of council’s own Green Wedge Management Plan. “We believe the bulk and scale of the development would be completely out of place in the open rural countryside.”

CFA tin taken in shop theft spree By Helen Velissaris

Police have released CCTV photos of the alleged thieves. Photo: Victoria Police. Police believe the thieves then made their way to a Dandenong South cafe along Frankston-Dandenong Road and stole soft drinks. 12366766-ACM40-17

Heartless thieves have stolen a CFA collection tin after breaking into three Keysborough shops. At least two men broke into the Keysborough South Shopping Centre late in the evening of 24 September, police said. They targeted a noodle and sushi restaurant first, stealing $500 in coins and an iPad, before moving to a Fish ‘n’ Chips shop. There they took a Keysborough CFA collection tin, a cheque book and a computer before moving to a nearby cafe and stealing $350 cash.

They have released CCTV photos of the alleged thieves and urge anyone with information to contact CrimeStoppers on 1800 333 000.

Spoon bandit is bent on no good By Helen Velissaris A Noble Park man with a penchant for Crunchie chocolates has attempted to rob a service station and a bottlo - with a spoon. The 46-year-old was laughed at when he entered the Caltex service station on Heatherton Road, Noble Park, on 25 September, about 2pm. Brandishing the handle of the spoon to make it look like a weapon, he demanded cash from the attendant. Not having much luck, the man grabbed three Crunchie bars from the front display and made a run for it. But his Crunchie haul wasn’t enough, so he popped into the local BottleMart brandishing his spoon again. This time the attendant hit the duress button which scared him off before police caught up with him at his home in Noble Park. He was remanded and charged with armed robbery and theft. He was due to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 28 September for a filing hearing.

Woman charged after car chase A 20-year-old woman has been charged after leading police on a high speed chase in a stolen car throughout the south east. Police had to use stop sticks to bring the car to a halt on Monday 25 September after the Narre Warren woman drove at speed and ran red lights through Hallam, Endeavour Hills, Narre Warren, Cranbourne and Frankston. The car had stolen number plates, which police connected to an aggravated burglary in Berwick a few days earlier. A man’s car keys were stolen as he slept after someone broke in, police say. The woman has been charged with aggravated burglary and stealing a car.

Swan’s siren song By Garry Howe Former Collingwood star Dane Swan had to postpone planned prolonged celebrations with his good mate and now fellow Brownlow Medallist Dustin Martin. Swan told a gathering of business people at the Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce Grand Final Lunch at the Southern Golf Club in Keysborough on Wednesday that he had blocked out two or three days this week to celebrate his mate’s Brownlow Medal win on Monday night. However, the celebrations were put on hold because the Richmond star had more pressing duties in Saturday’s AFL Grand Final at the MCG. “Suddenly the week became a lot calmer,” he smiled. Swan spoke of the bad attitude that held him back early in his AFL career and the turnaround that led to him being an integral part of the Collingwood premiership side in 2010 and winning the Brownlow Medal the following year. He says he should have three Brownlow Medals though - explaining that he was beaten by Carlton’s Chris Judd as a red-hot favourite in the premiership year, he won it in 2011 and had polled 19 votes before being injured in 2012. “And Bucks (coach Nathan Buckley) suspended me for two weeks for drinking that year too, so I say to people that I really should have three Brownlows.” In retirement, Swan agreed to enter the African jungle in the third series of the television reality show I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here - and was runner-up to former singing star Casey Donovan. He said the hardest thing about being in the jungle was the boredom. “You spend the entire time in a space half the size of this room,” he said. Swan ate up the challenges, literally. He smashed his way through the eating challenges and loves the likes of skydiving and bungee jumping. “You meet a few good people in there, but you also come across some f-wits as well,” he said. Swan says he still keeps in touch with former

Burglar was led astray By Cam Lucadou-Wells An “easily influenced” burglar has been jailed after pleading guilty to thefts during a break-in at a Hallam motel room. Jesse Limb, 22, and two accomplices in a black Magna had been captured on CCTV at Casey on Princes Motel about 11.30pm on 26 August. During the burglary, Limb broke in through a room’s window. A TV, speaker and a laptop were stolen from the room. The next day, Limb and three others in the Magna - which was without a rear number plate were pulled over by police patrolling in Hampton Park. Police seized an ice pipe, a stolen number plate, as well as the stolen TV, speaker and laptop. One of the passengers had a counterfeit $100 note with Asian characters, another passenger carried a deal bag of ‘ice’ and an ice pipe, Limb carried a valium tablet while the driver’s licence had been suspended.

He was also charged over attempting to enter another owner’s vehicle at a Hallam Hotel about 3.50am on 5 September. Limb was seen by police trying to unlock the 1998 Commodore with a key that didn’t fit the car. He claimed he was trying to move his friend’s car but had got the wrong key from his friend. He had recently bought the car but hadn’t had it transferred to his name yet, he told police. The accused was also found with a knife, prescription tablets as well as documents and credit cards belonging to three other people. Limb, who had a backpack filled with break-in tools, also had a receipt for using one of the cards to buy drinks, food and cigarettes at a BP servo. He told police he’d obtained the cards lawfully. He often carried other people’s belongings, he said. Jesse Limb’s lawyer conceded that there was no option but jail because the accused had failed to comply with judicial plans and orders, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard.

“If you place him on a community corrections order, I feel we’ll be setting him up to breach that order in future,” lawyer Emma Strugnell said. The “easily influenced” Limb had struggled with impulsivity as well as drug abuse, homelessness since he was 14, an intellectual disability and an acquired brain injury, she’d said. He’d been recently admitted to Dandenong Hospital with suicidal ideation, but had no diagnosed mental health issue. Limb said that he’d tried, and found various jobs to help occupy himself. When unemployed, he associated with “very bad people”. “I lasted nine months, Miss,” he said. “When it comes to work, I can work like a madman.” Magistrate Pauline Spencer told Limb he was “going around in circles” and struggling to stay in trouble and away from drug users. “I think you know what you need to do.” Limb was jailed for four months without a corrections order.

Hats off to some unlikely heroes of Australian history From front page Mr Seyit says the target audience was initially Muslim youth but hopes the mix of absurd drama, satire, comedy, rap and music gets an airing with mainstream audiences. It’s often underestimated how much young Muslims are impacted by media reports. At school, students hear the word “Islam” and they associate “terrorist”. “They grow up with the feeling that Muslims are terrorists, Muslims are violent and a lot of people don’t want them here. “Though young people are resilient with these terrible things that are happening around them, we can’t completely eschew this negativity.” The play is partly funded by Greater Dandenong Council. It is supported by Mr Seyit’s group Forum on Australia’s Islamic Relations (FAIR). It will be performed at the Castle Theatre in Dandenong on Saturday 7 October, from 7pm. Tickets are $5, with proceeds to support Rohingya residents in Myanmar. Bookings can be made on 0412 318 045 or fairdirector@gmail.com

Fighting the good fight with his life By Cam Lucadou-Wells In just eight weeks, John Yousif changes people. At his Fight Club in Hallam, he teaches “everyday people” how to box. For him, boxing is like life. “Life is a combination of hits. There are times you have got to shield yourself, there are times when you’ve got to hit back. “There’s times you’ve got to sit back and reflect on what’s going on.” Mr Yousif also takes his clients to volunteer at a Berwick soup van to get a new perspective on their problems. “The first stop is in Berwick among $1 million properties. There are between 50 to 85 people lining up each night. “It kind of shocks people. They don’t realise how good they have got things.” His latest set of Fight Club graduates have just completed their eight-week course. They are set to put on a ‘Fight Night’ that raises money to support a charity in Cambodia run by one of the clients. The charity helps provide badly-needed water filters and sturdier huts to thousands of secluded villagers in Cambodia.

John Yousif turns people into fighters and givers.

Looking Back

Compiled by Dandenong and District Historical Society

100 years ago 4 October 1917 Dandenong Methodist Sewing Guild For the six months ending 5 September, 100 garments were made for the Red Cross - 12 paper quilts, 114 new garments, 18 parcels and several articles of leftover clothing for the Home Missions in Melbourne. Donations made to Livingstone Homes for children with the balance of funds kept in hand for buying material to start next year. 50 years ago 3 October 1967 Don’t panic Dandenong City Councillor A. Gately believes that complacency is a greater threat to prosperity of Dandenong shopping centre than the establishment nearby of a regional centre. Concerted action and steady progress for

the next few years would assure Dandenong’s future. Regional shopping centres were the result of both a lack of parking facilities and of road congestion. The main way to meet the threat is to stress the advantages of shopping in a traditional centre and to eliminate the disadvantages. The advantages include more human and personal treatment of customers. The major disadvantage to shoppers is they have to travel blocks to get from store to store and cross streets with a heavy flow of traffic. 20 years ago 29 September 1997 $16.5 million goes on gun returns More than 1800 guns were turned in at the Dandenong Firearm Collection Centre last week.

The figures taken from the week ending last Friday showed a huge jump from the previous weekly average of 260 firearms. As the gun amnesty deadline draws closer, long queues were seen outside the Thomas Street centre, with gun owners waiting up to two hours to hand in their weapons. Dandenong looks certain to be the busiest centre in the state with the latest available figures showing that it had processed 38,000 firearms and handed out more than $16.5 million to gun owners in compensation. Dandenong Collection Centre manager Mr David Smith said the wide area the centre was catering to explained the high return rate. “We cover a huge area. You’ve got all of the Mornington Peninsula and then also the Gippsland area because the Sale centre has not been open all the time,” Mr Smith said. The gun amnesty ends tomorrow at 5pm after which people in possession of illegal firearms could be hit with hefty fines.

5 years ago 1 October 2012 Urban starkness ‘crisis’ An award-winning landscaper says our taste for native greenery in streets and public places is a turn-off for people. Wes Fleming, director of Flemings Nurseries, helped design a public garden in the $1 billion Somerfield housing estate in Keysborough, which was officially opened last week. When complete, the 120 hectares of former market gardens and wetlands will have about 2000 houses. About 20 per cent of it is expected to be open space. Mr Fleming took aim at the common practice of installing native-grass wetlands at open space in housing estates. “It attracts snakes, it’s not inviting to people nor is there any connection to the landscape.”

Engineer worked to build sports What’s In a Name delves into the fascinating stories and personalities behind some of the city’s bestknown street names and locations. This week the Journal looks at Shepley Oval in Dandenong. The sports oval at the top end of Pultney Street officially became the Harry Shepley Oval in March 1953. Shep, as he was known, died suddenly on 7 August 1952 at age 57. His death “robbed this district of one of its finest citizens, and leaves the whole community with a sense of deep personal loss”, the Journal reported at the time. Later that month, the Dandenong Cricket Association (DCA) at its annual meeting unanimously adopted president Frank Storan’s suggestion that the Dandenong Council should name a new oval in Mr Shepley’s honour. Dandenong Council, with approval of the Sports Council, in November 1952 decided to give the name to the Pultney Road sports ground.

WHAT’S IN A

NAME The official naming took place during the afternoon tea interval in the DCA finals on 21 March 1953. In a tribute following Mr Shepley’s death, the Journal said no man had done more for the advancement of sport in the district. “No man devoted himself so unstintingly and unselfishly to so many worthwhile community-projects - in fact, his very willingness to serve undoubtedly took its toll on his health and hastened the end.” The piece revealed that Mr Shepley’s home was on the corner of Clow and Foster streets.

A cartoon of Harry Shepley from the Dandenong Journal. He was born at Balmain in New South Wales and was a ship’s engineer. He saw service with the Royal Australian Navy through World War I and after the war went into the

commonwealth shipping line as a second engineer. Mr Shepley came to Dandenong in 1926 to open a dehydrating factory. Four years later, Swallow and Ariell took over the project and up until his death Mr Shepley was one of the firm’s most valued employees. He was the first DCA secretary and later became its president and a life member. He followed the same path at the Dandenong Baseball Association and was also a past president and founder of the Victorian Province Baseball League. Mr Shepley founded and served as president of the Dandenong Sports Council, too. “Thanks to his foresight and enthusiasm this shire has more and better sports grounds than it otherwise would have had,” the Journal reported. The Community Youth Movement had his enthusiastic backing, he was a valued member and a past president of the Dandenong District Hospital Committee, he was a member of the Mechanics’ Institute Committee, and of the Dandenong Agricultural Society.

It’s back to school for the men By Brendan Rees Hampton Park’s historic schoolhouse - now revived as a Men’s Shed - is set to receive a facelift after being saved from bulldozers last year. Restoration works for the 95-year-old timber building will start in October following its relocation from Hampton Park Primary School to Marjorie Eastick Reserve in April at the expense of the Education Department. Works are set for the extension and restoration of the school building with a new kitchen, store room and accessible toilet to be added, including a heritage-style, all-access entry ramp. Casey Deputy Mayor Damien Rosario said following a public tender process, the contract for the restoration of the school building had been awarded to construction company Mancon Projects Pty Ltd. He said preparatory works had been undertaken but the main restoration works would begin next month and be completed in February 2018. “The Hampton Park Men’s shed is a unique opportunity to bring members of our community together to connect in positive way while preserving an important part of our heritage.” “This is a fantastic example of council stepping in to provide an essential community facility which would otherwise have been lost forever and to retain Hampton Park’s oldest building for future generations to enjoy,” Mr Rosario said. Given the building was historical, he said council was now investing to get it up to scratch and retain it as a Men’s Shed, which was “most important.” “It was just the timing, a bit of luck as well and a lot of hard work but we got a really good result. We’ll be able to retain the building and provide a facility for Hampton Park to be able to use it,” he said. He said the people who built it were very wellknown families in Hampton Park, adding Casey councillor Wayne Smith and himself “jumped in” to ensure the building was not lost forever. “Councillor Wayne Smith and I worked really hard to get that going and the community was backing it. Their support as well was also heard.

A lot of people are very excited about this opening.” “The Men’s Shed will be right next door so if anyone feels sentimental about missing the old schoolhouse they are most welcome to have a look.” Secretary of the Hampton Park Men’s Shed David Maxwell said the refurbished Men’s Shed would be a “huge milestone” for the community. “We’ve been waiting to get a Men’s Shed in Hampton Park for eight years. It’s not a big building but it’s good enough for us to get started with and

grow within the community,” Mr Maxwell said. “I’ve got up to 65 members on the books for the team to go in there. Not all of them have signed up of course, but they’ve voiced their interest of the Men’s Shed.” Currently working out of the community workspace behind Arthur Wren Hall in Hampton Park, Mr Maxwell said the men’s group looked forward to being able to use the historic building seven days a week. “I will be a dedicated building where they can go down there and socialise and to build hobby

toys and things like that for kids. “We’ve got a lot of equipment ready to go in there. We’re just waiting for the amenties block to be added onto it with new toilets, a bathroom and kitchen and storage area.” “We’ll be able to do the gardening and make it really nice. It is a historic building and we do appreciate that we’ve got the opportunity of growing in that area.” “Once we’ve got the Men’s Shed we’ll have a monthly function where people can go there and have a meal and catch-up together.”

A voice for the victims By Brendan Rees Victims of crime will find support for their healing journey in a forum supported by City of Casey. Led by CEO of the Forget Me Not Foundation Janine Greening, victims will hear from police, victims of serious crime and passionate advocates for changes to the judicial system. Ms Greening said the forum, to be held Sunday 8 October at the City of Casey Civic Centre in Narre Warren was an opportunity for the community to learn about the untold truths about crime and its consequences. The forum will host speakers from Crime Stoppers, Adult Survivors of Child Sexual Abuse, and Casey Neighbourhood Watch as well as Australia’s Domestic Violence expert Anita Bentata. Ms Greening, also a victim after her mother was sexually assaulted and killed by two boys aged 15 and 16 in 2000, says she will talk about the consequences of youth offenders.

She recalled a time she received a phone call from a young man, who talked about his struggle to move on in life after being callously attacked one Saturday afternoon when he “was minding his own business.” “All he wanted to do was to go shopping and he got bashed up. He’s got kids. He owns a business. And he just went to go down the street, and now he was afraid to go back to work.” “It’s about being vigilant and it doesn’t mean it’s going to stop something. Sometimes it can if you’re aware of your surroundings and who’s around you.” Ms Greening says the forum will be about community safety and a place where people and victims of crime can learn of solutions and uplifting stories of survival. “When you actually hear from people that have been there, you learn the different processes. It’s the education. It’s about awareness.” “It’s people telling their stories. Then people are getting the information, the messages, to be

more aware and vigilant. For example, you don’t go walking around, you know, how a lot of young people walking in the dark with earplugs listening to music and anyone could be behind them.” Hosted by the National Victims of Crime Awareness Week and Forget Me Not Foundation, there will also be talks on domestic violence, community safety and missing persons. “There will be victims of domestic violence and we’ve got people who are authors and adult survivors of sexual abuse,” Ms Greening said. Casey's Councillor Amanda Stapledon said the forum would acknowledge victims of crime and police who see so much violence and crime in the community. “The day will be a commemorative and uplifting event that will present on ways in which we can work together to make our community a safer place to live,” she said. The forum will run from 1pm to 4pm on Sunday 8 October at the City of Casey Civic Centre in Narre Warren (20 Magid Drive, Narre Warren).

Minister lobbied on new train station proposal

Calls for a new Dandenong South train station have reached the Transport Minister. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said she received a letter regarding the proposal for a station at the South Gippsland Highway and Princes Highway junction and passed it onto Jacinta Allan for consideration. The Journal received an anonymous email touting the idea as an alternative to reopening the former GM Holden station due to lack of access to the residential areas. The writer said the station would service Doveton, Eumemmerring, Endeavour Hills and the Dandenong South factory district and make residents less car-dependent. “Attempting to persuade anyone to give up their car would be extremely in unpopular,” the email said. “However, persuading them to use it a little less often is not such an impossible task. “If more people have access to a station, it is almost certain that there would be at least some occasions when catching the train would be more convenient for them than taking a car. “People who become familiar with the railway system through recreational and social use may gradually become aware of other reasons to catch the train instead of driving.” The writer said this would reduce traffic congestion and road maintenance costs, cut pollution and get people more physically active. “The benefits far outweigh the cost of building a station,” they said. Adult learners in Casey have been targeted with a $1.5 million program from the State Government to help them get a job. The Community Solutions Casey project aims to boost training numbers of disadvantaged adults, especially those with poor English, literacy and numeracy skills. It also aims to increase the number of training venues in Casey, with job pathways aligned to local industries. According to the State Government, the fastgrowing Casey is identified as an area of marked skills shortage. The project will be delivered by Learn Local organisations and Chisholm Institute, and promoted by local community ambassadors. Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan launched the initiative at Hallam Community Learning Centre on 11 September. “It is great to see Learn Local organisations connecting with their local TAFE to deliver outcomes and pathways to the adult learning needs of the Casey community.” The program will be supported by Department of Education and Training, the Department of Health and Human Services, City of Casey and other community organisations.

Support helps out scared family By Casey Neill Nightmares and physical scars are still plaguing a Dandenong North husband and wife who were attacked in their own home. But support from the community is helping Pero and Radmila to recover from the 20 August ordeal in Victor Avenue. Silverton Cricket Club president Shane King presented the couple and their three children with a cheque for $1400. Radmila has had surgery on her broken hand and is recovering slowly. Pero is battling a constant whistling noise in his head due to a fractured skull. But like their three daughters, they’re suffering nightmares and are too scared to leave their house after dark. There’ll be further donations to come, with a GoFundMe appeal having raised $1805 so far. Businesses Waterchem WA, Odour Manage-

ment Seaford, International Chemicals Engineering and Alleys Electrical have made substantial donations. Silverton Cricket Club members and members of the general public have also chipped in. “The sad issue is that everyone has now moved on with their lives but Pero and Radmila are stuck in their torment, trying to face their injuries while making sure their girls are OK and trying to source enough money to stay afloat,” a Silverton spokesman said. The club established a Facebook page opposing violence and the online donation portal. Mr King wants the club to be a safe haven and positive influence for kids in the area. “It’s like something’s broken and I think a positive early influence in their life is a way of fixing it,” he said. Greater Dandenong councillor Zaynoun Melhem asked the council to work with the club to discuss ways to support its initiative.

Radmila and Pero were watching television about 10pm when they heard a window break. “I opened the door. They were already at the door and pushing the door in,” Radmila said. “We tried to push them out.” There were four men, all perceived to be of African appearance and wearing hooded tops and face coverings. During the struggle, Pero was struck to the head and fell unconscious to the floor. He has a fractured skull. One of the bandits hit Radmila with a baseball bat, and she hit back with her hands. Pero came to and instinctively grabbed a candle holder and headed for the door. The men fled empty-handed but the damage was done. Visit www.gofundme.com/care-fund-forbashed-family to support Radmila and Pero.

Pero and Radmilla accept a donation from Silverton Cricket Club president Shane King.

Guide to graceful ageing via event

The Australian Marriage Law Postal Survey 2017 is now open.

The City of Casey’s annual Ageing Positively Festival will run again throughout October, offering more than 100 events and activities to inspire, connect and entertain residents aged 55 and over. Held each year in conjunction with the Victorian Seniors Festival, the festival is a celebration of Casey’s older residents and their ongoing contribution to the municipality. City of Casey Mayor Cr Sam Aziz encouraged residents aged 55 and over to check out the program and get involved. “This year’s Ageing Positively Festival will kick off with an official opening and expo on Monday 2 October, featuring a talk from swimming icon and Olympic champion Dawn Fraser and a range of health and lifestyle exhibitors and demonstrations,” Cr Aziz said. “There are more than 100 other activities and events, information sessions and opportunities for older residents to join in, meet new friends and learn something new. “You might like to learn some helpful selfdefence tips, get moving with some Zumba, line dancing or table tennis or exercise your creativity by taking part in a calligraphy, pottery or mosaic class. “There’s also some great information sessions covering everything from the latest hearing technology and using an iPad to healthy breakfast options, as well as events where you can just head along for a meal or cuppa and meet new people.” Cr Aziz said council was proud to celebrate the valuable contribution of senior residents throughout this festival each year. “Council is committed to promoting and actively encouraging positive attitudes towards and among our over-55s population. “The Ageing Positively Festival is one way in which council celebrates our older residents and works to ensure they feel valued, supported and connected in their community.” Ageing Positively Festival Official Opening will start Monday 2 October at 10am to1pm at Lynbrook Community Centre, Corner Lynbrook Boulevard and Harris Street. Free entry. Check out the full list of events during the Ageing Positively Festival at www.casey.vic.gov.au/ageingpositively or request a copy of the festival program from City of Casey.

No butts, is goat is good

Waste not, want not on China trip

By Casey Neill

By Casey Neill

A Keysborough goat milk business has expanded into a second site in the suburb. NuLac Foods, owner of the Caprilac goat milk brand, intends to install a sachet and can-filling line in the Bridge Road space to pack the goat milk powder it makes at its milk-drying facility. It will be expanding its range into goat infant formula products this year. “It’s an exciting new step in our journey as a food producer in Australia,” CEO and owner John Gommans said. “The market for goat milk products is growing in Asia and we have strong demand from customers to move into formulated products given the goodness of goat milk, which is well known for its digestive ease.” The company has its own goat milk farms in Gippsland, including the popular Gippy Goat Cafe farm at Yarragon. In August last year, Mr Gommans told the Journal that he and wife Penny Gandar started the business in Australia in 2005. “We started off in goats in 1980-something in New Zealand, but our main business was dairy cows,” he said. “It was all a bit early. We allowed that to lapse. “Then we started off seriously again in 2000. We came to Australia in 2005. “We flew 500 goats over in a plane from our New Zealand farm. We bought this factory and a farm.” A 500-year family history in the trade preceded Mr Gommans’ foray into farming. He’s proud to be continuing the tradition that a recently traced family tree dated back to 1470. “We have 12,000 dairy goats ourselves and then we have another eight independent suppliers that supply us milk from their farms,” he said. “Our foundation is in goat milk products. “A few years ago we decided to expand our

A trip to China could inspire a waste-to-energy plant in Greater Dandenong. Earlier this month, a delegation from the council checked out alternative methods for disposing of household waste to see how they could be applied locally. “We believe a waste-to-energy facility would sit comfortably in our industrial zone,” Mayor Jim Memeti said. The Waste to Energy Study Tour included Cr Memeti, other councillors and council officers, a Greater Dandenong industry representative and members from the Metropolitan Waste and Resource Recovery Group and Mornington Peninsula Shire. They visited five waste-to-energy treatment plants in China, met with senior staff and looked at how the plants had been integrated into the surrounding communities. Cr Memeti said China was leading the way in this area with efficient and proven technology and sound environmental measures in place that were far superior to Australian and European standards. “As a council we are committed to taking a lead in this area and believe visiting modern facilities and gaining a first-hand understanding of how these technologies function is an important step moving forward,” he said. 29 JOURNAL NEWS Monday, 2 October, 2017

SPORT Season’s clashes will be fierce Summer’s favourite sport of cricket will return to the local area on Saturday, with another massive season ahead for the Dandenong District Cricket Association. The competition is set to become even fiercer with the quality of sides in this year's Turf 1 raising to another level. Will Mordialloc go back-to-back? Can Berwick or Springvale South make the most of their highly talented squads? Or will another challenger emerge? By Nick Creely BERWICK Coach: Will Carr Captain: Jarrod Goodes Last Season: Sixth Most Runs: Jarrod Armitage, 10 matches, 395 runs at 39.50 Most Wickets: Jarrod Goodes, 11 matches, 27 wickets at 12.44 and Jarrod Armitage, 11 matches, 27 wickets at 16.22 INS: Matthew Chasemore (Cranbourne), Jordan Cleland (Cranbourne), Jye Driscoll (Dandenong), Lachie Lawrance (returning) OUTS: Nil Home Base: Arch Brown Reserve, Berwick Turf 1 premierships: 6 Most recent premiership: 2011-'12 First Match: vs Dingley, 7 October, Souter Oval How far can they go? Despite possessing one of the most talented lists in the competition last year, the Bears fell short in their quest for a finals spot in what could be deemed as an unlucky season. Want to know how they plan to climb back up the top? By recruiting one of the great Victorian club cricketers of all-time in Matthew Chasemore. Add that to Nathan Pilon, James Wilcock, Jordan Cleland, Jarrod Goodes, Jarrod Armitage, Ryan Crawford and Darren de Souza, as well as the inclusion of handy depth players in Jye Driscoll and Lachlan Lawrance, and there is a group that should be aiming for nothing less than a top two spot. BUCKLEY RIDGES Coach: Daniel Watson Captain: Troy Aust Last Season: Fourth Most Runs: Susantha Pradeep, 12 matches, 349 runs at 31.73 Most Wickets: Luke Fletcher, 11 matches, 22 wickets at 14.82 INS: Jurgen Andersen (North Dandenong), Greg Todd (Bentleigh) OUTS: Jake Cronin (Narre Warren), Steve Mullaney, Luke Fletcher Home Base: Park Oval, Dandenong Turf 1 premierships: 2 Most recent premiership: 2012-’13 First Match: vs Narre Warren, 7 October, Park Oval How far can they go? Buckley Ridges are simply a club that knows how to be there at the pointy end of the season, this year is likely to be no different. The two overseas recruits in Steve Mullaney and Luke Fletcher return to the UK for County Cricket commitments, but gaining star pair Jurgen Andersen and Greg Todd are going to ensure they are right in the mix once again. There are very few holes in their side, and they possess a vast array of junior stars that are likely to get a taste of Turf 1 cricket in 2017-’18. CRANBOURNE Coach: Steve Miller Captain: Lucas Ligt Last Season: Seventh Most Runs: Steven Spoljaric, 10 matches, 681 runs at 85.13 Most Wickets: Steven Spoljaric, 10 matches, 25 wickets at 18.40 INS: Kelan Florentine (overseas), Jawed Hussaini (Narre South) OUTS: Matt Chasemore (Berwick), Steve Spoljaric (Springvale South), Jordan Cleland (Berwick), Mitch Hovey (Narre South) Home Base: Casey Fields, Cranbourne Turf 1 premierships: 2 Most recent premiership: 2015-’16 First Match: vs Dandenong West, 7 October, Greaves Reserve How far can they go? It is inevitable that when over 1200 runs and 40 wickets are taken out of any cricket side, that there will be at least some short-term pain. The 30 JOURNAL NEWS Monday, 2 October, 2017

DDCA

DANDENONG DISTRICT CRICKET ASSOCIATION

SEASON PREVIEW 2017-’18 – TURF 1

Springvale South will no doubt have to play with the premiership favourite tag this season. 164417 Picture: ROB CAREW Eagles - rather than look to cover the losses of Spoljaric and Chasemore with outside talent - will back in their developing talent under new skipper Lucas Ligt. It’s going to be a tough season and the Eagles will be desperate to be competitive as they look to introduce some younger players into the top grade. DANDENONG WEST Coach: Shanuka Dissanayaka Captain: Shanuka Dissanayaka Last Season: Tenth Most Runs: Greg Siwes, 8 matches, 207 runs at 25.88 and Shaun Weir, 11 matches, 207 runs at 18.82 Most Wickets: Peter Atkinson, 11 matches, 32 wickets at 19.09 INS: Shanuka Dissanayaka (Footscray) OUTS: Shaun Weir, Jason Dryden (Officer) Home Base: Greaves Reserve, Dandenong Turf 1 premierships: 3 Most recent premiership: 2000-’01 First Match: vs Cranbourne, 7 October, Greaves Reserve How far can they go? The Bulls were extremely young for the majority of last season, and while they didn’t have the greatest season, would have been buoyed by the continual improvement of talented youngsters such as Ethan French and Riley Siwes - son of Westers champ, Greg. The inclusion of 152-game First-Class player Shanuka Dissanayaka - who also won the John Scholes medal for an extraordinary 175 not out for Footscray in the 2013-'14 Victorian Premier Cricket grand final, means they finally have a batsman that can bat all day and pile on mountains of runs. Steady improvement and an ability to push the top sides will be a pass mark. DINGLEY Coach: Matt Hague Captain: Corey Booth Last Season: Eighth Most Runs: Matthew Hague, 11 matches, 507 runs at 46.09 Most Wickets: Jasenthuliyana Umega Chathuranga, 11 matches, 26 wickets at 17.62 INS: Corey Booth (Hallam), Dinuka Hettiarachchi (overseas), Marc King (Oakleigh) OUTS: Travis Sawers (Baxter), Jasenthuliyana Umega Chathuranga (overseas) Home Base: Souter Oval, Dingley Village Turf 1 premierships: 0

First Match: vs Berwick, 7 October, Souter Oval How far can they go? The Dingoes were highly impressive in their first season in Turf 1, and they are quietly confident they can be a force to be reckoned with in 2017-’18. The coup of signing is Dinuka Hettiararachchi is massive, with the 41-year-old having played test cricket for Sri Lanka and has taken 929 first-class wickets with his left-arm orthodox. Corey Booth joins the club from Hallam and will skipper the Dingoes, after averaging 103.33 with the bat in last year’s Turf 1 season. With Matthew Hague, Christo Otto, Andrew Dalby and Calvin Barlow still around, the sky is the limit. HALLAM-KALORA PARK Coach: Steve Gilmour Captain: Steve Gilmour Last Season: Third Most Runs: Ben Hillard, 13 matches, 385 runs at 32.08 Most Wickets: Jordan Hammond, 13 matches, 27 wickets at 16.33 INS: Thalaivan Sargunam (overseas), Dinesh Kumar (overseas) OUTS: Corey Booth (Dingley) Home Base: Hallam Reserve, Hallam Turf 1 premierships: 2 Most recent premiership: 2001-’02 First Match: vs Springvale South, 7 October, Hallam Rec Reserve How far can they go? A few handy additions will ensure the Hawks are battling for a finals spot once more, and the commitment of Steve Gilmour as captain-coach at the club once again means things are pretty stable. The loss of Corey Booth to Dingley does hurt in the short-term considering just how dominant he was with the bat last season, but the inclusion of Thalaivan Sargunam and the continual improvement of Jordan Hammond and the likes makes the Hawks a dangerous prospect. HEINZ-SOUTHERN DISTRICTS Coach: Trevor Davies Captain: Matthew Cox Last Season: Runners-up Most Runs: Kaushalya Weeraratne, 14 matches, 480 runs at 32.00 Most Wickets: Kaushalya Weeraratne, 14 matches, 32 wickets at 16.06 INS: Nil

Cranbourne - under new skipper Lucas Ligt - are entering a new and youthful era. 161940 Picture: GARY SISSONS OUTS: Chadwick Van Estrop (work commitments) Home Base: Reedy Reserve, Hampton Park Turf 1 premierships: 0 First Match: vs St Mary’s, 7 October, Carroll Reserve How far can they go? There are few clubs quite as stable as the Cobras, with just one likely change to the starting side from last year’s grand final defeat. The club is ready to challenge for another premiership but is still committed to the continual development of some of its younger players. Although they may not possess the same talent as a Berwick or Springvale South, HSD are a proud club and one that will be thereabouts at the pointy end of the season. MORDIALLOC Coach: Adrian Jones Captain: Chathura Athukorala Last Season: Premiers Most Runs: Ian Daniel, 13 matches, 506 runs at 38.92 Most Wickets: Ian Daniel, 13 matches, 38 wickets at 9.95 INS: Peter McDermott (overseas), Tim Wighton (returning) OUTS: Nil Home Base: Ben Kavanagh Reserve, Mordialloc Turf 1 premierships: 2 Most recent premiership: 2016-’17 First Match: vs North Dandenong, 7 October, Lois Twohig Reserve How far can they go? The reigning premiers once again loom ominously, but the inclusion of County player Peter McDermott and the returning fast-bowler Tim Wighton mean the Bloodhounds are even stronger than their grand final winning side last year. Chathura Athukorala gets the chance to skipper, with club champion Stuart Squires to step down from the role and just play. The most exciting part of the Bloodhounds’ Turf 1 side is the opening combination of Ian Daniel and McDermott, who are likely to cause some headaches for opposition bowling attacks throughout the season. The club is confident they have what it takes to go back-toback, but know there is a lot of hard work ahead as every side seems to have improved.

Sport

North Dandenong has had a hectic off-season, and will roll out a new-look side come Round 1. 145451

Dingley loom as a dark horse in the Turf 1 premiership race. 162712 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS

Pednekar (Caulfield Grammar), Alex Kerr, Zafar Sheikh (Casey South Melbourne) Home Base: Lois Twohig Reserve, North Dandenong Turf 1 premiership: 2 Most recent premiership: 1997-’98 First Match: vs Mordialloc, 7 October, Lois Twohig Reserve How far can they go? It’s been a truly hectic off-season for the Maroons, who have been busy recruiting some experience into their young line-up. The loss of skipper Jurgen Andersen does hurt, while Zafar Sheikh and Yash Pednekar give the elite level a go, so some quality leaves Lois Twohig Reserve. But the inclusions of Moorabbin pair Asfan Thajudeen and Shehan Fernando, plus overseas duo Gayantha Wijethilaka and Mitchel Minhas add some instant quality. A finals appearance is not out of the question if all goes right, but has too much quality been taken out of the side to remain a legitimate finals chance? Time will tell.

Sri-Lankan international Malinga Bandara. With skipper Craig Slocombe and Michael Vandort going around again, the line-up looks formidable on paper. Competition for spots will be fierce this season, with the Bloods managing to retain its core list while add five players who will expect a Turf 1 berth. A finals appearance is almost a certainty, but they will have to play with the tag of premiership favourites all season.

NARRE WARREN Coach: Craig Boswell Captain: Craig Boswell Last Season: Eleventh Most Runs: Janaka Liyanabadalge, 10 matches, 561 runs at 43.15 Most Wickets: Mitchell Shirt, 11 matches, 22 wickets at 19.91 INS: Caleb Boswell (Jivindick), Leni Van Der Werff (Endeavour Hills), Jake Cronin (Buckley Ridges), Jeevantha Kukatunga (overseas), Dilshan Dharmasena OUTS: Matin Sultani, Mitchell Shirt (Dandenong), Damien Gamage (Dandenong) Home Base: Sweeney Reserve, Narre Warren Turf 1 premierships: 0 First Match: vs Buckley Ridges, 7 October, Park Oval How far can they go? The Magpies struggled to remain competitive for the most part of the 2016-’17 season, and have lost three quality young players in Sultani, Shirt and Gamage for the upcoming season. The inclusion of Jeevantha Kukatunga is handy considering he has international experience in coaching Sri Lanka’s women’s side, but the club will be relying on its younger players to take the next step to remain a threat this year. They may surprise a few sides, but the likelihood is another tough year might be on the way for the Magpies. NORTH DANDENONG Coach: Shane Lamar Captain: Nasrat Malikzada Last Season: Ninth Most Runs: Clayton McCartney, 10 matches, 261 runs at 23.72 Most Wickets: Jurgen Andersen, 11 matches, 28 wickets at 21.29 INS: Asfan Thajudeen (Moorabbin), Shehan Fernando (overseas), Gayantha Wijethilaka (overseas), Mitchel Minhas (overseas) OUTS: Jurgen Andersen (Buckley Ridges), Michael De Kauwe, Shane Clark (retired), Yash

SPRINGVALE SOUTH Coach: Gordon King Captain: Craig Slocombe Last Season: Fifth Most Runs: Michael Vandort, 11 matches, 335 runs at 27.92 Most Wickets: Craig Slocombe, 11 matches, 20 wickets at 10.00 INS: Steve Spoljaric (Cranbourne), Malinga Bandara (returning), Brad Stephens (returning), Matthew Blanch, Aaron Blanch (Drouin) OUTS: Nil Home Base: Alex Nelson Reserve, Springvale Turf 1 premierships: 8 Most recent premiership: 2010-’11 First Match: vs Hallam Kalora Park, 7 October, Hallam Rec Reserve How far can they go? The Bloods look a genuinely frightening opposition in 2017-’18 after the recruitment of DDCA legend Steven Spoljaric and the return of former

ST MARY’S Coach: Kaushalya Gajasinghe Captain: Kaushalya Gajasinghe Last Season: Turf 2 Premiers Most Runs: Rob Peat, 13 matches, 369 runs at 26.36 Most Wickets: Rob Peat, 13 matches, 43 wickets at 12.65 INS: Kaushalya Gajasinghe (overseas), Ruwantha Kellapotha (Keysborough), Dimitri Siriawardena, Shakeel Ahmad OUTS: Jake Needham (overseas), Rob Peat, Charith Anthony, Junaid Kari Home Base: Carroll Reserve, Dandenong Turf 1 premierships: 7 Most recent premiership: 2002-’03 First Match: vs Heinz-Southern Districts, 7 October, Carroll Reserve How far can they go? It’s always a case of the unknown when the Turf 2 premiers step up to take on the big boys, and it’s very much the same when looking at St Mary’s - an almighty powerhouse of Turf 1 history in the DDCA. The Saints have a brilliant history in Turf 1 cricket, and return to the top-grade for the first time since 2011. The inclusion of high quality Sri Lankan firstclass cricketer Kaushalya Gajasinghe as the playingcoach is a massive coup and gives them instantly star quality. The loss of last year’s premiership captain/ coach Jake Needham and all-rounder Rob Peat does significantly hurt them, but the club has put no ceiling on what they can achieve in 2017-’18.

MOTORING Clio affordable and fun to boot By Alistair Kennedy, Marque Motoring MODEL RANGE Although the streets of Australia’s major cities are becoming increasingly congested the demand for small cars such as this week’s review, Renault Clio, has steadily declined, a victim mainly of the growth in sales of compact SUVs. Despite this there is serious competition within the market segment led by Hyundai Accent, Mazda2 and Toyota Yaris. High comparative pricing meant that Renault Clio has barely registered on the sales radar in recent years. This is a great pity because this stylish little French car has plenty to offer. The current, fourth generation, Clio has been on sale since 2012 but can still turn heads especially after a mid-2017 facelift that’s given it a stronger look. More importantly prices have been cut at the same time as extra equipment has been added to significantly improve the value equation. Clio’s model names have also been re-aligned to match those of other Renault models with the more elaborate names such as Expression and Dynamique being replaced with, in ascending order of price and equipment, Life (from $16,490), Zen ($19,990), Intens ($22,990) and GT-Line ($22,990). Driveaway prices range from $18,490 to $25,990. Clio has a slim grille that greatly expands in its centre section to frame the Renault diamondshaped emblem. The doors are deeply sculpted in their lower areas and the side profile of this fivedoor has the look of a three-door coupe thanks to concealed handles at the rear. Clio’s rear end flares in slightly at the side to give a muscular look. Exterior tweaks for 2018 on the entry-level Clio Life include body coloured door mirrors and handles, as well as chrome on the boot lid strip,

Life 0.9-litre turbo-petrol manual: $16,490 (mrp), $18,490 (driveaway) Life 1.2-litre turbo-petrol automatic: $18,990 (mrp), $20,990 (driveaway) Zen 1.2-litre turbo-petrol automatic: $19,990 (mrp), $22,990 (driveaway) Intens 1.2-litre turbo-petrol automatic: $22,990 (mrp), $25,990 (driveaway) GT-Line 1.2-litre turbo-petrol automatic: $22,990 (mrp), $25,990 (driveaway)

Renault Clio is cute in a very French manner. sill inserts and radiator grille. There’s also a new 16-inch flex wheel design. Clio Zen sees the addition of Renault’s newstyle C-shaped frontal lighting signature including Pure Vision LED headlights, front fog lights with chrome surround, gloss black treatment for the lower rear bumper trim and two-tone 16-inch Pulsize alloy wheels. The chrome theme continues with window trim added to Clio Intens which has 17-inch Optemic alloys. The sporty GT-Line gets extra bling through a Renault Sport rear spoiler, satin grey door mirrors, front and rear bumper inserts and 17-inch Serdar alloy wheels. New features inside Renault Clio Life include pushbutton start, automatic dusk-sensing headlights and automatic windscreen wipers with rain sensor, rear view camera, rear parking sensors,

rear power windows and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The second-level Zen adds front parking sensors and satellite navigation with voice control. The GT-Line gets Renault Sport-inspired blue highlights for the upholstery, aluminium sport pedals, GT-Line badging, leather handbrake handle and satin grey for the door mirrors. Boot size is a reasonable 300 litres and the rear seatbacks fold down flat although they do sit at a higher level to the boot floor. In that position there is 1146 litres of cargo space. Clio gets the maximum five-start ANCAP safety ratings, it comes with six airbags, stability and traction control, ABS with brakeforce distribution, parking sensors and a reversing camera. A seven-inch touchscreen is used in all models. Audio systems rise from a basic Classic sound system in the Life and Zen to 3D Arkamys Audi-

torium system in the Intens and GT-Line which also get the option of Bose premium sound. The Renault medium navigation system is standard in Zen with Intens and GT-Line getting an R-Link navigation and multimedia system. All have voice control. Two engines are available, both turbocharged petrol units. The only variant with a true manual gearbox is the Life with its six ratios mated to a three-cylinder 0.9-litre with 66 kW of power and 135 Nm of torque at 2500. All other models get Renault’s EDC dualclutch automated manual and a four-cylinder 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine producing 88 kW at a low 4800 rpm and an impressive190 Nm of torque from 2000 revs. The combination of significant price cuts and extra equipment that came with the recent upgrade should now mean that Clio’s outstanding looks, driving enjoyment and five-year, unlimited kilometre warranty really should soon have its competitors looking over their shoulders.
