Corey party plan By Cam Lucadou-Wells

Corey Worthington, pictured in 2015, has endorsed a 10-year revival of his infamous Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS street party. 143712 “It will be more tame than last time - bring a partner and kids, bring a plate because we can’t provide for all those people.” Ironically, with entertainers such as Operator Please, The Potbelleez, Sam Sparro, Gabrielle Climi and DJs “locked in”, there could be a number of gate-crashers. More than 8300 Facebookers have responded that they are “going”. Another 17,000 were “interested”.

Tony was surprised by the response, but said organisers could cater for such a 6000-strong crowd. “We were thinking of a backyard somewhere with barbecues or in a park somewhere. Just a small area. “There will be a lot of security measures and crowd control. “We’ve done the Falls Festival and occasional events.”

Celebrity agent Max Markson is keeping mum ahead of an advertised 10-year reunion of his client Corey Worthington’s notorious street party. Corey wasn’t “doing media” until closer to the event, Mr Markson said. However, Corey has given his own endorsement to the plan via his official Facebook page, posting the event with a comment: “Who is ready to party???!!!???” According to the revival event organisers, they are hoping to reunite for “a little catch-up” on 8 January - 10 years after the “rager at Corey’s place”. “In regards to location, we’re still waiting on confirmation from Corey that this is actually happening, but it’ll be somewhere in Narre Warren again.” The reunion was posted by a Facebook page, ‘I saw a UFO and nobody believes meme’. Page administrator ‘Tony’, who had ‘raged’ at the original party, said he hadn’t had a direct response from Corey, but “it seems he’s down with it”. “It’s the Corey we know and love.” Worthington, as a then 16-year-old, threw a party at the family house while his parents were away in 2008. After posting the event on MySpace, it went viral. The party attracted more than 500 partygoers, and got out of control with police cars smashed. On a live interview on A Current Affair, Corey said he’d apologise but refused to take off his large sunglasses. Because “they’re famous”. “Best party so far that’s what everyone has been saying,” he said during the interview that polarised the country. Tony has “hazy” memories of the original party, but says it was a “fun event”. He was 29 at the time, but had done nothing like that again. He was looking forward to catching up with Corey for the first time in 10 years. Tony has since settled locally with a wife and kids, and hopes for the reunion to be a “relaxed affair”. “It’ll be a little catch-up for the people who went last time.

Car rammed into house By Cam Lucadou-Wells A man has been charged after allegedly ramming another car at high speed, causing it to spin across oncoming peak-time traffic and into the back of a house on Pound Road, Hampton Park. In what was described as a family violence dispute, police said the man allegedly chased another male driver and then pulled a “pit maneovre” in which he rammed the rear corner of the other car from the side. It is normally a trained tactic employed by police, Narre War-

ren CIU’s Detective Sergeant Chris O’Brien said. The cars reached speeds of about 100km/h on the busy, built-up thoroughfare, about 4.30pm on Wednesday 4 October, police say. When struck, the victim’s car allegedly spun backwards across an oncoming traffic lane, into gravel, through a back fence and struck the two-storey townhouse. The crash caused the collapse of a pillar, windows and roof section of the house. The victim walked away from the crash. He was assessed at the scene by paramedics but

required no further treatment, an Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said. “It’s miraculous that no-one was injured or killed,” Det Sgt O’Brien said. Due to the damage, the home has been declared unsafe for habitation. The house’s occupants have been sheltered in emergency accommodation. A 19-year-old Hampton Park man was charged with offences including conduct endangering life and dangerous driving. He was bailed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 28 November.

We’ve all heard the story of the emperor’s new clothes. Telling the truth was something the officials and those in high places were not able to do. It took a small child to break the deception. It reminds me of what is occurring in our nation right now. We are being told by the politicians and those in high places that redefining the definition of marriage will have no consequences. We have been told this by Mr Turnbull, Mr Shorten, Mr Pyne, Senator Wong, Mr Alan Joyce and so the long list goes on. And we are not even allowed to have sensible a discussion about this without being called a bigot, homophobe and worse. This raises some very big red flags for me … red being very significant! Do we need a child to break down the furphies we are being told? There are huge consequences if the nation changes the Marriage Act. We only have to look at other nations that have made the change and see how this has changed these nations. Canada has had same-sex marriage legalised for 12 years and just recently in Ontario they passed a bill that has struck out the terms “mother and father” from law and legislated for a child to have up to four legal parents. Is this what we want for our children and grandchildren? Already we are seeing some frightening things happen even before there is a change. Julian Porteous, the Catholic Archbishop taken to court in Tasmania for actually telling his congregation (and no-one else) that marriage is between a man and a woman. And this is before any changes are made to the Federal Marriage Act. Only one example of free speech being shut down at a rapid rate in the nation. Then we have Father’s Day ads refused to being aired, people losing jobs and being forced from positions on boards just because they believe in traditional marriage and say so … all in the past 12 months and this is here in Australia! Loss of freedom of speech, freedom of religion and what will be taught in our schools are all very serious consequences that will occur if the Marriage Act is changed. To those who are yet to vote, please do and make sure you are very thoughtfully indicating your response to the question we have been asked. Look carefully Australia … the emperor is wearing no clothes. Jane Foreman, Berwick.

A huge number of pre-loved and new books were on offer at a book fair held at St Andrew's Uniting Church, Berwick on Saturday 7 October. The proceeds of the book fair went towards the community services of the Uniting Church. 173679 STEWART CHAMBERS abandoned for months, “emergency“ breakdown procedures and police incidents that results in the closure of lanes for spurious reasons. Rob Salvatore is right - it is potentially dangerous and not just for motorcyclists. Obviously Ray Peterson has never ridden or driven on tram tracks either - rutting the asphalt surface causes you to over-correct and increases your chance of hitting “permanent" concrete barriers. Thanks for the signs and driving to conditions Ray. What used to be a 45-minute drive in recent years to say Box Hill has now become a 1.5-

hour journey and that’s not in peak hour either. No doubt some students of risk management will be wanting to use this project as an example of what not to do in their thesis. VicRoads and Fulton Hogan would do well to revisit the idea behind their risk analysis for this project, including its appropriate management, co-ordination and timely maintenance and rectification of identified risks. My best wishes go out to the long-suffering public who have to go about their lives and have to navigate this never ending nightmare story. Charles Harris, Pakenham.

SOUTH EAST TATTOO REMOVAL

One can only empathise with Todd Curtis (lead article, News, 28 September by Cam Lucadou-Wells). Why anyone either wants to ride or drive the nightmare that is now the Monash Freeway from Cardinia Road onwards to the city must have some sort of psychological death wish or are oblivious to chaos and confusion. Am I surprised that VicRoads and Fulton Hogan are playing pass the parcel? No. They are responsible for: a deteriorating road surface for all users, a route inundated with conflicting signs - their attempt to justify safety, inordinately long works (now well into a second year - their contract must be on a monthly basis), a proliferation of road line markings which in some places converge, merge and cross especially which on dark or wet days have lead to numerous near misses, tail-enders, side swipes and “road rage". Restriction signs in areas where there is no work being done or where work is five to 10 metres away from what used to be the breakdown road, protruding flexible conduit, poorly arranged bollards (with graffiti “tags" readily visible), recently and original installed noise barriers with damaged panels, poorly positioned temporary bollards placed by “contractors“ that result in traffic being reduced to one lane with their “work" (if you can use that word when you see four or five blokes in high-vis watching another driving a piece of equipment metres from the road) well out of traffic and harm's way, trucks and cars travelling in convoy especially in the outer lane such that you can’t lane change, fluctuating speed signs for no apparent reason - great for stop start cha-cha style motoring. Banks littered with construction materials and items, obscured/damaged direction and warning signs, concrete humps with projections in service lanes, incomplete works left

Socially speaking On Wednesday 4 October the CranbourneBerwick Facebook Page shared the story of a Cranbourne East family who won a twomonth fight to free their impounded dog Sophie, after Casey Council dramatically dropped allegations that the dog had killed neighbouring sheep. The eight-year-old rottweiler, hobbled by a damaged hip, joyfully reunited with Allan and Angela Duffield and their six children after spending weeks on a potential death row. The story sparked great relief from readers. Here is how they reacted online. Angela Duffield: Thankyou to everyone. We are very pleased with the outcome of all this. We are all so happy to have her home and Sophie is happy to be back home. It took a couple of days for her to eat and

actually come and sit with us, but she is getting a lot better as you can see. Chris Sellers: I have been following this debacle. So, so happy for you to have your four-legged family member back. Mirabelle Bielinski: Council really need to take a good hard look at themselves! Jan Riley: So very pleased to read the fantastic news of Sophie’s freedom. She will treasure the time with you all again. Take care everyone. Nicky Steve Thomas: That’s great news. Jackie Blowes: Great to hear she is home. Sandrina Gregory: Awesome news. Donna Lansdowne: That’s fantastic. Claire Hoskins: About bloody time! Betty Hannagan Jan will be happy Nicky. Carol Carr: Great news.

Bad history beats bail option By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Narre Warren man has been refused bail after being found in a stolen car while he was on bail and a community corrections order. Daniel Dawson, 28, escaped on foot after police found him rummaging through the car - fixed with stolen number plates and with a blown tyre - in Hemmings Street, Dandenong, on 22 August, a court was told. The car had been stolen during a house burglary in Berwick in August while the victim was away overseas. When arrested three weeks later, Dawson told police he was unaware of the burglary and that the car was stolen. His version of events “changed throughout the interview and was inconsistent,” police informant Sergeant Chris Marlow told the court. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said Dawson had a bad criminal history, having spent 35 days in custody and re-offended on CISP credit bail and treatment corrections orders in the past.

Dawson’s current corrections order covered 39 charges, including indecent exposure and an indecent act on a phone, Mr Vandersteen said. “There’s not much you can trust,” the judge said. At the time, the accused had a warrant for his arrest for failing to appear on bail for possessing GHB and possessing cartridge ammunition without a licence. The items were allegedly found with Dawson slumped in a car parked at Casey Central shopping centre on 27 June. On his phone was a message to an unknown number: “have you got wheels got sales out my asssss,” according to a police submission to the court. Defence lawyer Adrian Dessi told the court his client’s criminality started in 2015 after a relationship breakdown. In refusing bail, Mr Vandersteen didn’t think Dawson was engaging with his corrections order, and wasn’t “as honest as you could have been”.

Police chase By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Narre Warren driver of a stolen car has reached speeds of up to 130 km/h and disobeyed several red lights during a police pursuit through several Casey suburbs, a court was told. Madison Riley, 20, pleaded guilty to several charges including dangerous driving during a police pursuit. Riley had accelerated from police when they tried to intercept the stolen VW hatch with stolen number plates on Belgrave-Hallam Road, Hallam, about 2.30am on 26 September. The pursuit, with the help of the police air-wing, spanned Endeavour Hills, Narre Warren, Cranbourne and Frankston. After puncturing a tyre, Riley continued driving for two kilometres until the car was “boxed” in by police. The car, which was stolen from Berwick the night before, was used in a petrol drive-off.

Riley was on parole at the time of the offence. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said that it would be presumed that Riley would serve further detention time in a youth justice centre on top of her cancelled parole period. “I don’t want you walking away from here today thinking you’ll be getting a free kick for this.” Mr Vandersteen said another traveller hit sideon at 130km/h at an intersection would be unlikely to survive. “This is very serious offending on a whole range of bases. “It’s just an absolute miracle no one was seriously injured or killed. “Will it take someone to be seriously injured or killed for you to stop it?” Riley will be sentenced at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 16 October, pending a youth justice order assessment.

Holiday stalker is refused bail A man has been refused bail for allegedly stalking his Emerald ex-partner, including following her during a Queensland family holiday to “pee them off”. The man allegedly booked into the same Gold Coast apartments as the victim and her children, after he had been uninvited from the trip, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard. During the mid-August holiday, he allegedly taunted the family as he swam at the apartments’ pool. On one occasion during the night he reportedly yelled from outside the woman’s unit: “Are there any water facilities? F*** you and your family.” She reported the incident to Queensland police. Victoria Police informant Sergeant Chris Marlow told the court that prior to the holiday, the vic-

tim received 23 “harassing” texts from the man. One stated: “You’re going to regret getting me out of your life, believe me.” Another threatened that she’d need to dig a hole for her pet dog, the court heard. “I thought I’d have a chance to explain matters at Queensland,” the self-represented man told the bail hearing on Monday 9 October. He allegedly breached a court intervention order to protect the victim and her children after the holiday. In defiance of the order, he allegedly sat in a car nearby as one of the children caught his school bus several times, and approached the expartner on a Croydon hotel dancefloor. “Nice top,” he told her as she walked past him on the way to her car. “It’s the one I bought you.” However he told the hearing: “I was not aware I’d have to have left (the venue). “I thought I was there first.”

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen told the man: “You’re the respondent to the intervention order. It doesn’t work like that.” The man replied that he was living a stable life, just going to work and coming home. “I’ve moved on. I’ve got no ties to (the complainant) and her family,” the man said. “I’m happy. I’ve no intentions of bothering the ... family anymore.” Mr Vandersteen noted the two months of alleged recent offending “and you’re saying as of last month that you’re over her?” he said. He refused bail, noting that the man had been found guilty of dousing petrol on another expartner and child’s beds and threatening to set it on fire in 2012. The man had failed to show cause for his release, given the risk of re-offending and interfering with witnesses, Mr Vandersteen said. The man was remanded in custody to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 17 October.

Jail term for faker By Cam Lucadou-Wells A man has pretended to have been kidnapped and tortured in an elaborate plot against his business partner, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court has heard. Christopher McKai, of Endeavour Hills, had earlier struck a deal with the 52-year-old male victim to provide eight motorcycles at a highly discounted price. However, after being paid $10,500 for the goods, McKai failed to provide them. He told the victim they went missing, on the same day that the victim asked for the paperwork. The victim then received texts from McKai’s mobile phone, from an apparent third party, that McKai had been kidnapped over a missing firearm, the court was told on 9 October. “He is going to die” and “you’re the next one”, the stream of messages read. The victim rang McKai’s phone. An unknown male told the victim that he’d stabbed McKai, who would be killed if the firearm wasn’t returned. The victim, who had no knowledge of the weapon, reported the matter to police - which led to a costly and unnecessary Armed Crime Squad major investigation. McKai was located “safe and well” in his home by police, arrested and interviewed at Cranbourne police station. McKai also faced charges over thefts of motor vehicles as well as failing to stop and exchange details

after crashing into the back of a car in Endeavour Hills on 27 March, and again in Victoria Street, Melbourne, on 24 June. He had never held a driver’s licence, the court heard. McKai’s lawyer said the victim and the accused were both involved in a “dodgy deal” with a lot of “back story and factors” not presented to the court. McKai had previously committed 145 prior thefts and obtaining property by deception offences since 2008, and served two jail terms, the court heard. He’d been victimised and threatened while in jail, the lawyer said. “There’s not much I can say to mitigate his role given his priors.” Magistrate Jack Vandersteen described McKai as “quite an intelligent individual - potentially” whose crimes with varied levels of sophistication were a “real concern”. “You have a significant prior criminal history. “I’d have to be guarded as to his prospects of rehabilitation.” He noted McKai’s diagnosed depression, but also his lack of engagement with counselling and treatment. McKai was jailed for 21 months, with a minimum period of 14 months. He was also fined $1500 and disqualified from driving for two years. He was ordered to pay restitution costs of $4958.40 to Victoria Police, and to pay $10,500 compensation to the victim.

$30,000 ice in man’s car By Cam Lucadou-Wells A man with a string of suspended driving offences and found with up to $30,000 worth of meth in his car has been placed on a community corrections order. Matthew Christopher Edwards was found with 40 grams of ‘ice’ after his car was intercepted speeding at 101 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on South Gippsland Highway, Dandenong South, on 10 July, a court heard. Edwards told police at the time that he had a NSW driver’s licence but couldn’t produce it. He then gave a false name and address to police. During a search, his suspended Victorian driver’s licence was found in his wallet. His mobile phone contained several messages relating to drug trafficking, prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Kate Kirk said. Edwards was caught driving suspended another four times in Mulgrave, Melbourne, Hallam and Narre Warren between May and July, the court was told. On 2 September, he was found with two prohibited butterfly knives when arrested with a known criminal associate in a car in Narre Warren in the early hours of the morning. He told police after an ensuing strip search: “I don’t trust you. I don’t respect you. I won’t tell you anything.”

Edwards, who sat with his wife of 12 years in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 10 October, had gone in a downward spiral since losing his job in March, the court heard. He had also been under strain due to his father’s death and his own ulcerated leg. Defence lawyer Sarah Pratt said it had been a short period of offending, without prior criminal history apart from driving offences. Edwards had since landed work. Imprisonment should be the last resort, Ms Pratt said. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said Edwards’ remarks to police showed he “didn’t know when to pull his head in”. “It’s clear you’re leading two different lives, two different personalities. “You’ve got stability, but then look at your behaviour driving cars when you shouldn’t be driving.” He estimated the drug’s street value to be between $20,000-30,000. He said Edwards was on the “cusp” of imprisonment, but opted for a longer than usual CCO. Edwards, who had spent three days in remand custody, was put on a two-year supervised CCO with 350 hours of unpaid work as well as drug and mental health treatment and judicial monitoring. He was disqualified from driving for 16 months.

Something’s fishy alright By Cam Lucadou-Wells Melbourne Water has defended its wildlife welfare practices during its works to create a wetland at Troups Creek West reserve, Narre Warren. Nearby resident Ray Darbritz said he’d seen fish trapped and gasping in pools of “10 inches of water” as a result of the retarding basin being drained and infilled. “They can be seen swimming close to the water surface which is a behaviour I have not seen before. “They would be distressed as the water is significantly lower and much, much smaller. “The water body is also a lot more shallow so the body of water will be a lot hotter.” Melbourne Water has hired an ecologist and an environmental adviser to ensure that aquatic species and birds are “appropriately protected and relocated”. “A large number of European Carp have been found in the wetland area,” Melbourne Water project manager Jason Brown said. “Carp are considered a noxious species under the Fisheries Act and cannot be relocated, so these fish will be euthanised in a humanely manner by an ecologist.” Mr Darbritz said Melbourne Water had only acted to euthanise the carp after he raised his concerns this month. He also heard of reports of pelican having to be freed by workers after it was stuck in the muddy banks. “I don’t know how you manage adult and young pelicans. How do you catch them and relocate them? “There is a bulldozer pushing mud in a wetland area. It’s a huge disturbance. “I don’t know how you can work in wetlands without impacting on wildlife. There’s not a chance in hell.”

Troups Creek West is drained during the wetlands creation. Picture: SUPPLIED The upgrade is designed to help the wetland better filter stormwater, which flows through the local drainage system and into Port Phillip. Melbourne Water also states that the increased habitat complexity will support more native animals. The project includes new drainage lines, silt removal and a new pedestrian footbridge. Mr Brown said works to protect the retarding basin’s embankment were almost complete, with topsoiling and seeding of the area to come. Most of the upgrade will be finished by Christmas. “Once the grass is at a suitable length, fencing will be removed from this area and it will be reopened to the public.” Vegetation would be planted within the wetland in early 2018.

Maas relocates to Casey By Cam Lucadou-Wells Labor’s newly endorsed candidate for Narre Warren South is set to ward off calls that he’s not a local by moving into the Casey-based electorate. National Union of Workers state secretary Gary Maas told Star News he plans to soon move from St Kilda East into a local rental property, with a view of buying a home if he wins the seat in the 2018 State Election. Though growing up in Springvale, Mr Maas, 47, admitted he was a newbie to the area. But he was willing to move in and to listen to the community. The Australian-born son of Sri Lankan migrants plans to meet with migrant community groups and schools as a starting familiarisation point. “One thing is I’ve got to be able to speak for this community and find out what’s affecting them. “I plan to make myself available over the next 13 months and hopefully after that as well.” Mr Maas, a former music teacher and lawyer - as well as a drummer in a “dad’s band”, has a platform of secure jobs, affordable houses, roads, education and representing union members. “People wake up in the morning, and they get the kids ready for school. They want to ensure that their kids are going to a good school, and that there’s a good result at the end of their education. “When they get in the car on the road they want those roads to be good roads and leading out to where they work.” He defended the union background of himself and current MPs. “As a union official I actually run a small business. “I’m the head of a branch that turns over $4.5 million a year, a member-based organisation that employs over 50 employees. “I operate under some very stringent regulation put in place by conservative governments and it ain’t easy to do that. “And I have to balance that with advocating so strongly for our members. Mr Maas said to call him a unionist was a mere label. He said people should consider what union officials had done in their roles and the types of

The State Government has recently announced it will introduce such a bill into parliament later this year. South-Eastern Metropolitan Liberal MP Inga Peulich said Mr Maas’ candidacy showed that Labor thought Casey and Narre Warren South residents weren’t worthy of a local Casey candidate. It was “another case of plum jobs for union mates”, Ms Peulich said. “Having an MP who lives 35-45 kilometres away means that Casey and NWS voters will continue to be short-changed when it comes to representation if Mr Maas is elected. “(They) deserve better than an another union organiser on three to four times the earnings of many people in NWS getting another plum job.” Narre Warren South MP for 12 years Judith Couacaud Graley announced her resignation in August, effective at next year’s State Election.

More pokies By Cam Lucadou-Wells Casey Council has called for a review of gambling regulations after Zagame’s Berwick Springs Hotel won approval for 10 extra poker machines. On 2 October, the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation found the proposal to increase the hotel’s poker machines from 95 to 105 passed the ‘no net detriment’ test. It instead found there were likely to be small, positive social and economic impacts. The decision follows the VCGLR’s recent approval of a Dan Murphy’s liquor super-barn in Cranbourne East, despite opposition from Casey Council and Victoria Police. Casey mayor Sam Aziz said the Gambling Regulation Act 2003 - as well as liquor control laws - needed to be reviewed to consider more broadly the views of the community and the “wider societal impacts” of gambling and alcohol. “Council is disappointed in the VCGLR’s decision; however, it was consistent with what the legislation asks the commission to consider.” The Berwick Springs venue is the fifth most lucrative pokies venue in the state, collecting $17.8 million in 2016-’17. At least $393,665 will be generated by the extra machines in the first 12 months. Some of that new expenditure will be associated with problem gambling, but there was only a low risk of an increase in problem gambling, the commission found. “The commission finds that the catchment area of the hotel exhibits low levels of socio-economic disadvantage and generally lower vulnerability to risks of problem gambling.” Cr Aziz said the council urged a precautionary approach to limit the impact of problem gambling on family violence rates - a link that was dismissed by the commission. He said the council would continue to advocate to the State Government to reduce harms

from gaming machines and to extend a cap limiting machine numbers in Casey. The commission put “nil-to-marginal” weight on opposition by City of Casey, a 274-name petition from the Alliance for Gambling Reform and individual submissions. This was due to a “relatively low” community response to the council’s survey on the issue, as well as many opponents not living in Casey and not specifically arguing about the application. Alliance for Gambling Reform board member Tom Cummings, of Berwick, led the community objections. “While not unexpected, this is an incredibly disappointing decision,” he said. “The VCGLR got this one badly wrong. “They are almost predisposed to accept the submission.” He cited the venue’s “huge profits” and the widespread harm of pokies addiction as reasons to knock back the application. “It’s never over. There’s the potential for someone to take it to VCAT (on appeal), which is a costly exercise.” Casey was lower than the metropolitan Melbourne average in gaming machine numbers and per-capita losses on pokies, the commission noted. The hotel’s surrounding area was not considered to be at significant levels of disadvantage, and the increased machines were only a “small proportional increase” in machines in Casey. Zagame’s tied up to $2.6 million of improvement works, including a larger bistro and relocated kids play area, to the proposal. The hotel also planned to install a community service booth with responsible gambling pamphlets. It pledged to increase its annual community contributions from $75,000 to $100,000, including a donation towards a part-time gambling support worker at Berwick Salvation Army. Zagame’s didn’t comment by deadline.

Ice knife bandit jailed By Cam Lucadou-Wells A 32-year-old ice-addict who wielded either a machete or a knife during five armed robberies on “soft target venues” in Melbourne’s South-East has been jailed. Steven Joshua McQueen pleaded guilty to the series of robberies and thefts over four days in March 2016. McQueen’s targets were a Tooradin servo, an Upper Beaconsfield supermarket, general stores in Frankston South and Langwarrin and a Frankston milk bar, Victorian County Court judge Carolene Gwynn said in sentencing on 2 October. He had been disguised in a raised hoodie, sunglasses and on one occasion a ‘Scream’ mask. Before and amidst the robbery spree, he stole three sets of vehicle number plates, which he affixed to disguise his car and his partner’s car during the hold-ups, Judge Gwynn said. The disguises, the choice of small-scale shop owners, the number plate thefts and forearming of weapons made the crimes “not entirely opportunistic”, she said. “Your offending was brazen, aggressive and

serious.” The victims, who declined to provide impact statements, were no doubt terrified by McQueen, the judge said. In one incident, a store attendant was observed cowering from a machete-wielding McQueen as he removed a cash register drawer from her store. Judge Gwynn accepted McQueen, who had been in the throes of a severe meth addiction at the time of offending, had since shown genuine remorse. McQueen relapsed into drug use and reoffended late last year after a positive start to a CISP bail program, the judge said. He is still to appear at a magistrates’ court on those offences. Still in the early stages of recovery, he had returned clear urine screens for several months, she noted. Given he had no criminal history, his age and his therapeutic supports, his prospects of rehabilitation were “good if not high”. McQueen was convicted and jailed for up to five years and nine months, with a non-parole period of three years and four months.

La Trobe MP Jason Wood has engaged in a media offensive amid the biannual Council of Australian Governments meeting, spruiking his plans to toughen pre-emptive terrorism powers. As Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, state ministers and local government leaders prepared to table issues at the 5 October meeting, Mr Wood took to various national media outlets - as well as social media - to raise the profile of his proposed changes. Most significant among the proposals is giving police powers to request court ordered restrictions on any person of interest. This would include enforcing counselling and curfews, restricting internet usage and any associations with other extremists. In addition, foreigners on a visa would be given one month to enrol in a de-radicalisation program, or face being deported. Mr Wood said the threat of terrorism cells being active in the region was a real concern, particularly in the south of his electorate, which includes Gembrook-Cockatoo, Officer, Beaconsfield, Berwick and Narre Warren. “At present, it’s a wait and see approach - police don’t have the resources to constantly monitor anyone they have serious concerns about,” Mr Wood said. “We don’t have those kinds of resources in Australia. “Under these changes, these people of interest would face a court and potentially face community protection orders. “It’s no good waiting until they’ve committed a terrorist attack. I believe this will make a positive difference to Australians.” Mr Wood is a former police officer and member of the counter-terrorism unit. He said the preventative detention legislation

Jason Wood is calling for more powers to fight terrorism. - as it stands - is inadequate and further powers need to be enacted. Mr Wood has cited the case of Abdul Benbrika, who was convicted of leading a terrorist network and is believed to have considered targeting the MCG. Previously, Benbrika was ordered out of Australia three times, but eventually allowed to stay in the country. Mr Wood spoke on Sky News, Channel 7 and wrote a detailed opinion piece in the Herald Sun. Reports have indicated terrorism is high on the COAG agenda, including making it an offence to possess instructional terrorism material and to make terrorism hoaxes. 12367750-LB41-17

Crime victims given an ear By Cam Lucadou-Wells A victims-of-crime forum could become a yearly event at City of Casey. A successful event with victims as well as police and community safety representatives was staged at the civic centre in Narre Warren on Sunday 8 October. A moving presentation was given by Susy Ratcliffe of Leave A Light On organisation, which represents families with missing loved ones. It was formed in memory of Ms Ratcliffe’s older sister Joanne, who disappeared with another girl after a football game in Adelaide in 1973. Ms Ratcliffe wasn’t born at the time, but grew up knowing her parents’ anguish. Every night, her parents would leave an outside light on, in the hope that Joanne would return. She remains missing, with no answers as to what happened to her. Forum organiser Janine Greening, of Cranbourne, has been fighting for victims’ rights since her 75-year-old mother was bashed and strangled by two juvenile intruders in her own home 17 years ago. The offenders, now in their thirties, still can’t be legally identified. Stricter consequences should apply to juveniles committing the most serious crimes, she said. “The only way is to get the laws changed. “If they’re not sorry for it, they can’t be rehabilitated. They should name and shame them. “There’s got to be some consequences,” she said. She fumes at the gang of young offenders who swamped Casey Central shopping centre recently. They did it because in one of their words, “they can”, she said. Other speakers included Betul

State Opposition front-bencher Gordon Rich-Phillips, Acting Inspector Jacqueline Poida of Victoria Police and Rob Ward of Casey Neighbourhood Watch were among the other presenters. There were also speakers from Victims of Crime Victoria, Crime Stoppers Victoria, Healing Wounds Together, the Family Law court and Hope Organisation. Cr Amanda Stapledon said it was an “uplifting” event, with amazing stories and advice from victims and groups. It should become a regular fixture for the scores of victims concerned

about law-and-order in Casey, she said. “It showed that first we should speak to the victims of crime - they have a powerful story to tell. “As councillors, we’re better informed to speak to law-makers to make sure their voices are being heard.” There was a common feeling among victims that they were being bypassed by lawmakers and the justice system. There was also a need for stricter penalties to deter people from the most serious crimes. Perpetrators seemed to get better support and protection than their victims. “It really seems the system is upside-down.”

One-way screws fix Face of crime is still ugly By Cam Lucadou-Wells

By Brendan Rees

About 100 number plates were secured with one-way screws during an Operation Safe Plates event at Casey Central shopping centre. Volunteers from Casey Neighbourhood Watch and Sikh Volunteers Australia installed the screws on shoppers' vehicle plates as a means to prevent rampant numberplate theft. During the event, Assistant Commissioner Robert Hill and Acting Inspector Terry Rowlands of Victoria Police helped handout pamphlets at the centre. Casey Neighbourhood Watch chairman Rob Ward said the police senior officers were “blown away” by the community support for Neighbourhood Watch and the work of police. About 14,000 number plates are stolen in Victoria each year. They were often used in petrol drive-offs, robberies and other offences as a means of hiding the offender’s identity. “While we cannot fit anti-theft screws to every car, every one that is fitted is one less car that can be a victim of this particular crime,” Mr Ward said. “If nothing else, fitting these screws reminds people that they can take action themselves to avoid becoming a victim of crime. “Let’s not make it easy for the bad guys.” Mr Ward said CNW would pro-

The number of public nuisance offences has soared and overall crime in Casey is up, but police say they are working hard to keep the community safe. Latest Crime Statistics Agency Victoria data showed crime in the City of Casey had increased 3.3 per cent with public nuisance offences rising to 43.8 per cent, up from 73 offences to 105. The data also recorded a 5.6 per cent jump in burglaries in the year to June, increasing from 2432 offences to 2567. Southern Metro Region Commander, Acting Superintendent Tom Nairn said police were pouring in efforts to reduce residential burglaries. “We believe that any number is too high which is why we have dedicated operations focusing on this type of offending,” he said. The figures also showed crimes against the person were also up 8.3 per cent from 3929 to 4254. Acting Supt Nairn said the rise in assaults was primarily as a result of an increase in the reporting of family violence incidents. “We believe this is partially due to increased confidence in police responses as well as an increase in community awareness and understanding that family violence is a crime,” he said. Robberies in Casey were down 18.9 per cent which Acting Supt Nairn said was against a state-wide increase. “We have seen commer-

cial locations such as service stations, milk bars and restaurants targeted to obtain cash and cigarettes. Street robberies focusing on mobile phones have also been prevalent. It is pleasing to see that the combined efforts of the Southern Metro Region Crime Team and local operations by the Casey Crime Investigation Unit have impacted on the reduction of robberies.” Acting Supt Nairn said a link between vehicle theft and aggravated burglary continued but added: “Rest assured we are not complacent.” “Police across Casey will continue to work hard to prevent, deter and investigate and arrest offenders in order to keep the community safe. We want to see further decreases in the crime rate overall, with both crimes against the person and property as the major focus,” he said. Among the victims of criminal damage was Cranbourne East resident Sharyn Murdoch, who was disgusted to find her car rear window smashed on the morning of Monday 2 October. “Whether or not we were targeted or it was just somebody wanting to steal it and couldn’t get in so they smashed it, I don’t know,” she said. Ms Murdoch said she had planned to sell her car, a Kio Rio hatch. “It means we’ve now got to repair the window just to sell it,” adding “It’s disgusting. I hate vandals.” State Member for Gem-

brook Brad Battin said home invasion and aggravated burglary were a major concern for local families where they would “not feel safe in your own home”. Mr Battin said Premier Daniel Andrews had his “head in the sand” if he thought the crime statistics were positive. “Enough is enough. People want more police, tougher sentences and better protection in their own homes,” Mr Battin said. “A governments priority should be to protect the community, and Daniel Andrews has failed.” Member for Cranbourne Jude Perera said while more work needed to be done, the State Government would provide Victoria Police with the resources and powers they need to keep the community safe. “We have heard the Casey community’s concerns and have responded with a significant investment in new police and crime prevention funding for the area. “The first 300 of our over 3135 new police will see 31 police allocated to the Casey PSA - which have already started to be deployed in these communities with more coming each month. South Eastern Metro MP Inga Peulich slammed the State Government for a 34.33 per cent surge in crime in Casey since taking office in December 2014. Ms Peulich said public crime statistics revealed a 6011 increase of offences

Cranbourne East's Sharyn Murdoch was devastated to find her car rear window recently smashed by vandals. 173713 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS reported in Casey since the election of the Andrews Labor Government. “Daniel Andrews promised to smash the violent youth gangs running rampant across our state, but these statistics prove he hasn’t even made a dent,” Ms Peulich said. “This isn’t just a crime wave, it is a crime tsunami. The culture of lawlessness in the City of Casey under Daniel Andrews must end.” Police say the public can play their role in reducing crime such as locking their cars and not leaving tools visible in work vehicles and trailers when unattended. Also, locking home doors and keeping garages closed. Anyone who sees suspicious behaviour should contact their local police or call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 of via crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Fashion shines on High Street By Rebecca Skilton It was a night of fashion, food and a whole lot of fun at the Berwick Business Group’s annual VIP Fashion Festival. The event took place on Friday 6 October when more than 200 guests were treated to champagne, sweets and a live DJ as the evening showcased late night trading, fashion and beauty workshops, a catwalk and a number of exciting sales and special offers. And as Berwick Business Group Co-Secretary and owner of iBare Giftware Berwick Magda D’Abaco explained, the jam-packed night was the ideal opportunity for locals to experience the unique and exciting stores Berwick has to offer. “It was a fantastic night,” Magda said. “We had over 200 ladies attend on the night and got so much positive feedback. “All the retailers came together to put on a really great night out in Berwick. “(These events are) extremely important. We have to be competitive against other larger big retailer precincts like Chadstone and Fountain Gate so that the community knows they don’t have to go elsewhere to shop - they can stay in Berwick.” With workshops such as styling sessions at iBare Boutique and Little Black Bag, a hair and make-up session at Victoria Belle and a catwalk presented by Little Blackbird, Magda explained that the night also presented the diverse range of fashion and beauty products that local traders can offer the public. “In Berwick, we make sure each boutique complements each other,” she said. “We have different styles that cater for all age groups and demographics. “So we have the young mums and more mature ladies and we’ve got our older customers as well. “There’s about 12 or 13 boutiques in Berwick and we all make sure everyone is catered for and anyone can find something in one of our stores.” More than $1100 worth of prizes were up from grabs as well and featured winnings including two $100 vouchers from Little Black-

AGENCY TAKES HOME REIV AWARD FACEY Industrial Commercial was recognised for innovative marketing, winning Best Marketing Campaign by a Medium Agency at the 2017 Real Estate Institute of Victoria (REIV) Commercial and Industrial Marketing Awards. The agency, which won the award for Best Office Site Sales Campaign under $20,000 at last year’s REIV awards, has been celebrating 100 years in real estate this year. The winning entry was an Expression of Interest campaign for a multi-listing site at 1485 South Gippsland Highway and 1-4, 13-27 and 29 Cameron Street, Cranbourne. The unique site comprised five buildings with four established tenancies and a separate land parcel ready for development. The properties were marketed as available to purchase together or separately. A multi-channel marketing campaign targeted at investors and developers resulted in 85 inquiries and a number of expressions of interest resulting in the sale of all five properties for a combined sale price of $3,652,000 to a private investor. “We aimed and succeeded in selling the properties as a package, pushing the appeal of a strong existing income while the buyer planned development of the additional parcel of land,” said Facey Industrial Commercial’s Richard O’Callaghan. The campaign included a mix of traditional and digital advertising with highlights including a social media campaign on Facebook and LinkedIn generating over 200 clicks to the website and a drone video promoted via internet

Berwick the Place to Shop

A Star Advertising Feature

Paint to perfection Some people say it is ‘old fashioned’ to be a little paint shop, instead of being a big warehouse, but if customers want personal service where experience matters then the staff at Paintright Berwick share more than 40 years of knowledge in the paint industry. “Unfortunately when you go to a warehouse you usually find a different person each time and most have only completed a basic course,” said Paintright owner Wayne Young. “They use a computer to colour match paint but the computer can only deliver the nearest formula. “Artists do not use a computer to restore artwork, they eye match the colour needed. “We allow for variations in the sheen level and the texture in our paint colour matching. Ask a warehouse for a stain match and they will tell you to pick one off the shelf.” Paintright, which has colour consultants available for site inspections, has been helping the Berwick community for 25 years.

Mr Young said Paintright’s prices were competitive too. “We have access to many Australian suppliers that do not want to sell in the warehouses. They feel only experienced people can explain and sell their products. “In Berwick we stock Haymes paint, one of the last Australian owned paint manufacturers since 1935, along with Quantum Timber finishes, Nutech sealers, Viponds leather and vinyl paints and many other specialists manufactures. “Our wallpaper range consists of over 15,400 designs, not just the dozen you see at some warehouses. We have wall murals, borders and decorative stickers that can change the theme of a room in a minute. “Although we have had ‘chalk’ paint for 15 years, a new range from Haymes with other ‘special effects’ and waxes is due in stores shortly,” Wayne said. He said evening information classes may commence soon.

They’ll spin you a yarn By Cam Lucadou-Wells Six of Casey’s elders reveal the extraordinariness of their lives in a one-off performance, Tale Tellers, at Bunjil Place. The ‘tale tellers’ made their homes in Casey from far-flung corners of the world - New Zealand, England, Fiji, Tasmania - and a little closer nearby. One was a Fijian Indian urged by his parents to give back to the world, who worked with Maori youth in New Zealand. He is now a film-maker and radio presenter driven to reach a wider audience. Another was one of seven kids who travelled down from Deniliquin, photographed lying on a mattress in a back of a ute gazing at stars above Swanston Street in the 1970s. She is now working with children as an Aboriginal co-operative leader. Actress and director Evelyn Krape, with the help of oral historian Dr Vivienne Nicholson, scripted the stories. She will join the six on stage with an Afghani performing group, leading them like a pied piper

as they tell their stories. Many of their life stories were forged by profound moments of tragedy, Ms Krape says. “What’s driving these tale tellers has been a determination and resilience, and to contribute to the community.” Ms Krape has staged a number of tale teller performances. Audiences are inevitably moved. You will hear “sighs of recognition” from the crowd during the show, Ms Krape says. “Everyone finds something that makes them think ‘Oh my God, that’s my story’.” And for the elders - that generation that often feels invisible, is wracked with ill-health and isolated - this is a chance to be embraced. “We’re celebrating their lives,” Ms Krape says. “It’s extraordinary when the grandchildren and great-grandchildren are in the audience and they see their gran or their pa. “They have seen them as these ordinary, frail people and it’s marvellous. It’s a great feeling.” Tale Tellers is at Bunjil Place Studio, Magid Drive, Narre Warren on 3 November, 1-2.30pm. Tickets: $7, including afternoon tea.

our aim. “Doveton is a very long established community and they some of the elderly people who don’t use the pool would fight to death to keep that pool so it’s very important to improve it,” he said. He said council was looking at revitalising the water play area. “It’s not adventurous enough. We want to expand it and make it more interesting. And make that a destination so you’re not just coming just because of the pool. Young families would come because of that play area. “We need to do something to revitalise it. We need to work collaboratively with the community,” Cr Smith said.

Doveton pool’s future remains in limbo until Casey Council embarks on another round of community consultation next year. The City of Casey is reviewing the options and opportunities to upgrade the facility in line with community needs, and “maximise what the site can achieve”. Councillor Wayne Smith told the council’s meeting on Tuesday 3 October that the concept of closing the pool had been raised over the years and “never been received well.” He said council would ultimately like to make the pool indoor heated. “If we can attract some state and federal funding that would be

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST

Skills align for awards By Kyra Gillespie Some of the South-East region’s best businesses are vying for this year’s Casey Cardinia Business Awards. In the lead up to the gala presentation dinner on Friday 27 October, Star News will profile the nominees in each category, this week focusing on new business and people’s choice. New Business: Aligned Leisure Managing Cardinia Life health club since 2015, Aligned Leisure is a 100 per cent owned subsidiary company of the Richmond Football Club, established as a vehicle to manage the operations of Richmond’s health, fitness and leisure business activities. From the Olympic Way centre in Lakeside, Pakenham, Aligned Leisure’s primary goal is to align programs and services with unique community priorities as outlined in the local Municipal Health and Wellbeing Plans. “Our programs and services are not about us, they are about our partners and they will, at all times, be in total alignment with the needs of the specific community that we are servicing,” Aligned Leisure Pakenham’s Simon Bryson said. “Supported by the people and business systems of the Richmond Football Club and the AFL, Aligned Leisure can deliver unprecedented additional value to our community partners.” Part of its services include provision of a health, fitness, nutrition and resilience program to every primary school in the region at no cost to the school, implementation of anti-bullying programs to primary schools and establishing youth leadership programs in local sporting clubs to identify the next group of young local leaders. Davey Marine Pakenham’s Davey Marine has built a reputation as South-East Melbourne’s premium Honda dealership. The company prides itself on quality, whether it’s for an engine service, electronics upgrade or custom fit up of a new vessel. Staff are fully qualified and their mechanics are highly trained using the latest in diagnostic equipment. Davey Marine’s Electrical Technicians are also trained on the latest in marine electronic systems. “We’re retail and service specialists for a select range of new and used recreational boat brands and accredited dealers for Honda Marine, Blackdog Cats (New Zealand) and Edencraft Boats Australia,” Davey Marine Pakenham’s Adam Davey said. “We also operate a Compleat Angler franchise from our retail outlet and sell an extensive range of boating accessories and safety gear.” Ideas Ministry Ideas Ministry specialises in making brands do the selling for its clients. Natalie Birch is the creative director of the Casey-based business. “We combine our great ideas with expert skills

in graphic design and marketing and collaborate with other creative professionals like photographers, web designers, copywriters and printers to offer a complete branding solution which reels in your dream customers,” Ms Birch said. Ms Birch has immersed herself in graphic design and creative art for more than 15 years. She was taught by the same lecturer who taught children’s book illustrator Graeme Base of Animalia fame. “We see things differently at Ideas Ministry. Anyone can design but it takes personality to come up with great ideas. We’re boundary pushers. Alternative explorers. Your business think tank.” People’s Choice Enhance Yoga Berwick’s Enhance Yoga offers Pilates, yoga and barre and prides itself on embodying all that is health, and with that, all that its members form part of its Enhance Tribe. The yoga and wellness studio is the first of its kind in Melbourne’s South-East to offer the unique styles of barre fusion, calligraphy flow and vinyasa flow yoga as well as workshops in a purpose-built studio. Director at Enhance Yoga and Qi Gong and yoga teacher Adam Beardsley was a multiple Australian National Wushu title holder, compet-

ing abroad in the World Championship representing Australia from his years training kung fu / wushu. Adam with his wife and director Suyinh Beardsley call their operation a family business. “We always had vision to not have just a studio but to have a wellness centre and to share our knowledge with others,“ Adam said.

Award by Westfield. “Over the years this inspired us to push the boundaries of business to see what we were capable of. We put everything we had into the business and worked harder than ever before,” Mr Di Silvo said. “We are offering something new and unique in casual dining.”

Twisted Sista Founded in 2011, Twisted Sista has put a twist on expectations by combining a modern cafe with a gelateria. Launching their first store in Fountain Gate Shopping Centre, Sam and Martha Di Salvo wanted to create an original and authentic place to indulge the senses. “Twisted Sista was born from a vision to create an atmosphere of fun and excitement with a menu based on the freshest ingredients delivered with exceptional personalised service,” Sam said. “Twisted Sista is renowned for incredible gelato displays, a welcoming atmosphere and a customer experience that is as visually exciting as it is delectable. “In short, creativity, amazing presentation and damn good food is at the very soul of the Twisted Sista brand.” In its six years of operation, the family-run business has won seven retail excellence awards, including the prestigious Best Retailer in Victoria

Village Way Cafe Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of busy Lakeside, Village Way Cafe offers everything needed for relaxing brunch with friends. Conveniently located a stone’s throw away from Cardinia Road Station in the Lakeside Shopping Centre, Village Way Cafe is renowned for its welcoming staff and generous meals. “I was really quite shocked to hear that we had be nominated,” cafe owner Laura Celona said. “I really think it’s because of the excellent staff, they create such a welcoming atmosphere. Because of that it’s not just a normal cafe, it’s a place where people open up about their day or any problems they might be having.” With two chefs on site, Village Way offers catering and hosting for events and birthday parties, as well as all-day breakfast, lunch, coffee and cakes. “It’s all made with love and served with a smile.”

Striding out at last An exciting new running event in Cranbourne called the Casey Stride Series, officially ran its first of three race series at Casey Fields on Sunday 8 October. The events - which feature a 5km or 10km run or walk, along with a kids’ 2km or 1km run or walk, were well received in the local area on the weekend. Dion Jelley, the founder of the Casey Stride Series, explained how the event came together. “I moved into the Casey area at the start of the year, and there was just no events around - I went and had a few runs down at Casey Fields, and decided to set up an event,” he said. “It’s been a pretty short turn around - we’ve managed to pull it off in a matter of months and get it up and running which is good.” “It was our first event and had just over 100 people turn up which is pretty good - we had lots of families, and lots of kids which is one of our main targets. “We want to be more community-based rather than racing, and we had some amazing feedback from the locals - it will be awesome to see how it grows.” If anyone is interested in getting involved, head to the Casey Stride Series website for more information on how to register and for racing schedules.

By Nick Creely VICTORIAN PREMIER CRICKET REVIEW - ROUND 1 Casey-South Melbourne skipper Lachlan Sperling has lamented his side’s inability to stay in the game for long enough, with the Swans losing their opening round match to Ringwood on Saturday by 93 runs. Sperling and his Swans were bowled out for 109 off 36.3 overs in the pursuit of the Rams’ par total of 202 at Casey Fields, and were suffocated by the relentless pressure the opposition applied. “It was pretty disappointing - we weren’t good enough for long enough in all areas and that showed on the scoreboard,” he said. “We had some periods (in the field) where we thought we were on top - they had a couple of good partnerships in the middle that turned it a little bit but I thought later on we pegged them back after they were looking at around 240.” “We thought it was gettable, but we just didn’t execute with the bat - but we took some learnings from it for sure. “It was the dot ball pressure, and the lines they bowled we couldn’t score off - the main thing we got from the game though was the intent of our batsmen.” After sending the Rams in to bat, spearhead Nathan Lambden snared two early scalps courtesy of some tidy work by Dev Pollock behind the stumps, leaving the visitors 2/13. An 85-run partnership between

Nathan Lambden cleans up the tail as he bowls Matt Fotia on the last ball of the innings. 173653 Jackson Freeman (61) and Joseph Loorham (47) helped lift the Rams into a strong position at 4/185, looking at posting a score of 250 or more. But Lambden then tore the middle to late order apart with raw pace to take four quick wickets to keep the Rams to just 202 - a favourable total considering the Rams were at one point 4/173 and eyeing a massive score. The Swans’ quick - who made his Victorian Futures debut last season -

took 6/16, his third five-wicket-haul at First XI level, while Brendan Rose (1/44), Dylan Hadfield (1/31) and Sperling (1/38) all chimed in and did their job. In reply, the Swans just couldn’t rotate the strike enough, and were bowled out for just 109 despite some resistance by aggressive batsman Jordan Wyatt (42). An early maximum that cleared the ropes by the returning Kasun Su-

riaratchie (12) had the Swans up and about, but the wickets of Suriaratchie, Michael Wallace (2) and Sperling (6) dented the home side’s ability to keep the run rate up. But despite the loss, Sperling said his side aims to move on quick and are unlikely to make any changes, with an important clash against an Essendon side fresh off a strong win over Greenvale a chance to bounce back. “We didn’t execute what we set

ourselves to do, but we have this week against Essendon to rectify that so we move on from there and start again,” he said. “We’re likely to stick with the same group 100 per cent. “It’s going to be a really good test, they have a really good side and we’re keen to get out there and test ourselves - we’re looking forward to the challenge.” Casey will travel to play the Bombers at Windy Hill on Saturday.

Cranny wins without ’em By Nick Creely REVIEW - ROUND 1 (Day 1) Cranbourne has proven they are capable of scoring a match winning total without Matt Chasemore and Steve Spoljaric after an excellent day’s cricket against Dandenong West at Greaves Reserve. Sent in to bat by Bulls’ skipper Shanuka Dissanayaka, the Eagles got off to a tough start losing David Pratt’s stumps to Peter Atkinson for a duck, before a string of middle order partnerships saw them bat through the day to finish on 8/238. Eagles’ skipper Lucas Ligt (39) led the charge with a classy innings batting at four, while the likes of Cameron Kelly (46), Nivin Sathyajith (55) and Jake Harrington (35) all worked in partnerships to frustrate the hosts. Ligt was proud his young team could start the season so positively after a string off on-field departures put a hole in their side. “What we worked for all pre-season, and the plans we put in place was virtually 100 per cent executed on the weekend,” he said. “We talked about batting in partnerships and setting some goals, and we achieved virtually every one of them - we wanted to be three down at lunch and we were four down which was okay, and then Harro (Jake Harrington) and Niv (Nivin Sathyajith) set the whole day up for us really. “Cam Kelly batted quite low in previous years, and used to open back in the day and when he started his senior career at Cranny, and he put his hand up and said he was keen to open, and it’s given us some depth - he took his opportunity and delivered.” Looking ahead to Saturday when the Eagles attempt to defend what was the opening weekend’s highest team score, Ligt has confidence his bowlers will be hungrier than ever. “Our bowlers have worked all pre-season to 80 over plans and we want to execute that - I’ve said the whole way that whoever bowls the most disciplined areas will bowl the most overs and

A familiar face - former Cranbourne premiership player Steve Spoljaric bowling for Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS Springvale South on Saturday. 173652 our guys have happily taken on that challenge,” he said. “I think if we execute our plans with a strong fielding side too we’ll be right - we bought Harley Miller in who hasn’t played for a few years and

his fielding is exceptional and if we are sharp in that area we will shock a few teams this year.” Meanwhile, Berwick is in a commanding position on a dominant opening day of cricket at Souter Oval against Dingley, with the Bears need-

ing just a further 68 runs for victory. Sent in to bat on a tricky wicket, Dingoes coach Matt Hague (76) stood tall at the top-ofthe-order, with quickies James Wilcock (5/49) and Jarrod Armitage (1/64) snaring early wickets. A 69-run stand between Hague and all-rounder Christo Otto (42) got the Dingoes back on track, before Wilcock shredded the middle to late order in a devastating spell that included three wickets in a matter of three overs. Eventually, the Dingoes fought their way to 174 after a late cameo by Marc King (34 not out). The Bears wasted no time in moving towards a match-winning position, with opening bats Darren de Souza (32) and Adam Watson (51 not out) sharing a faultless 69-run partnership. Spinner Dinuka Hettiarchchi (1/28) picked up the late wicket of de Souza, but the Bears ended the day 1/107. Down at Hallam Reserve, Hallam and Springvale South are playing out a fascinating day of cricket. Hallam skipper Steve Gilmour elected to bat, and despite no batsman able to capitalize on starts, the likes of Ben Hillard (35), Jagveer Hayer (42) and Jordan Hammond (47) ensured they posted a competitive total of 200 off 75.1 overs. In reply, the Bloods lost star opener Nathan King (7) caught behind off Gilmour, and are currently sitting at 1/9 off four overs. In other Turf 1 matches, Mordialloc posted 216 and have North Dandenong on the ropes at 3/17, Narre Warren’s Janaka Liyanabadalge inspired the Magpies to a competitive total of 213 against Buckley Ridges with an excellent 93, while HSD is in the box seat after scoring 234 and having St Mary’s 1/3 at stumps. In Turf 2, Beaconsfield are 1/73 in pursuit of Coomora’s under par 9/153, with captain/coach Matt Golding starring with 6/48, while Scott Phillips belted 125 as Narre South racked up 7/276 against Lyndale, who are 2/52 at stumps.

AFL-bound midfielder Hunter Clark has claimed the Dandenong Stingrays’ Best and Fairest, running away with the award by almost 100 votes. Clark - who is firming in the race to be a potential top-10 pick in this year’s draft, polled 192 votes from just 13 TAC Cup matches in 2017, in a season in which he averaged almost 30 disposals per match.

Top-age half-back flanker Mason De Wit finished second on 100 votes after a consistent season, while hard-nosed inside midfielder Mitch Cotter was just behind him in third with 92 votes. All eyes will now turn to the draft, with up to seven Stingrays - Clark, Luke Davies-Uniacke, Aiden Bonar, Tom De Koning, Oscar Clavarino, Aaron Darling and Riley D’Arcy - all a live chance of being on AFL lists in the coming months.

Lehman’s winning ton By Russell Bennett A practically flawless unbeaten century from Tooradin opener Russell Lehman delivered his side an impressive first-up victory over the reigning champions and West Gippsland Cricket Association (WGCA) Premier powerhouse Kooweerup at Denhams Road on Saturday. Impressive Kooweerup 16-year-old all-rounder Mitch Davey top-scored for his side after skipper Mark Cooper won the toss and elected to bat. Davey was unbeaten on 61, guiding the Demons to 7/220 from their 40 overs. But it was an unbeaten 132-run stand for the fourth wicket between Lehman (105 not out) and Josh Lownds (68 not out) that guided the visitors home as they reached 3/222 in the 38th over. The two were simply superb - giving a lesson in building an innings, but more importantly, capitalising with bog knocks in a crucial win. Tooradin’s talent as a core group has never been in question, but in the past there have been some questions surrounding their application - particularly with the bat. A few early wickets

could have a snowball effect, but not on Saturday. Lehman looked for runs in all corners of the ground, while Lownds used his feet superbly - particularly against the Demons slower bowlers. They stayed confident, and stuck to the task at hand - putting the responsibility of winning the game on to their own shoulders. At Cardinia, meanwhile, a new-look Bulls outfit brushed off the cobwebs and showed plenty of upside in the process of a composed win over Merinda Park; Pakenham was forced to toil hard for its win over Upper Beaconsfield at Toomuc Reserve; and Clyde began the new Premier season right where it left off on the final day of the last District season. Clyde lost just five wickets on the way to reaching 224 from their 40 overs with Gavin Britt (76 not out) and Shane Webster (52) top-scoring. In reply, new Emerald skipper Mitch Daley (58) notched a half-century of his own while Mitch Thomas (32) and Aaron Brooks (38 not out) also added valuable contributions with the willow, but it wasn’t enough as the home side was dismissed for 160 in 33 overs.

Tooradin star Russell Lehman finished with 1/35 against the Demons, but it was with the bat that he really made his presence felt - recording a brilliant unbeaten century in reply to Kooweerup’s 7/220. 173655 Picture: ROB CAREW In District, Nar Nar Goon/Maryknoll broke a 33-game first XI losing streak dating back almost three years when the Marygoons brilliantly defeated Tooradin by four wickets at the Seagulls’ nest on Saturday. The boys from Nar Nar Goon last won a game back in Round 9 of the 2014/'15 season against Officer, when they defeated the Bullants by three

wickets. But a newly energised Marygoon outfit - featuring seven changes from its last game in 2016/'17 - sent the ‘Gulls in to bat in captain-coach Kyle Dorman’s first game for his new side. The home side posted a competitive 7/153 from its 40 overs, but the Marygoons (6/155) broke their drought with four wickets and 7.4 overs to play.

Narre bowlers even-handed on the greens NARRE WARREN BOWLS The bowls season is in full swing with Narre Warren winning three, losing three and recording a draw from its seven teams over the two days. On Tuesday, Division 2 travelled to the Dandenong Club for its second win. Jos van Hout, Reg Young, Geoff Ampt and Rod Lane led the way, winning 25-10, and were supported by Tina Courtin, Ernesto Vergara, Alan Mark and Keith Mark (28-16). Wilma Haringsma, Phil Howard, Peter Hayden and Jim Millar, failed to fire losing 10-33. Narre Warren (1) 14-63 defeated Dandenong Club (1) 2-59. Division 3 was at Fountain Gate against Pakenham, but suffered another loss. The rink of Nick Filius, Pam Uren, Pieter Castricum and Eric Sydenham was the only winning one, 22-11, while the rinks of Nancy Pugh, Rose Rasmussen, Andy Tobler

and Wally Finlayson (15-23) and Pauline Kempf, Janice Moran, Micki Horton and Enid Gibb (726) both lost. Narre Warren (2) 2-44 lost to Pakenham (4) 14-60. Division 1 (six a side) was also at home against Pakenham for an honorable draw. Diana Peterson, Jeanette Cox and Truus Henneman won 23-21, but Jac Moody, Graham Peterson and Helen McCarthy lost by 2 (1921). Narre Warren (3) 7-42 drew with Pakenham (5) 7-42. The start of Saturday pennant saw the Division 2 team travel to Beaumaris for a disappointing loss. Joe Selfridge, Reg Young, Rod Lane and Cameron Lee was the only winning rink (22-14) while John Wright, Percy Herath, Peter Hayden and Zak Storm fought hard all day for a 16-21 loss and

Philip Howard, Carl Lapham, Eric Sydenham and Erik Luyters (13-32) and Geoff Ampt, Tim Joyce, Bryce Dexter and Jim Millar (13-27) also both lost. Narre Warren (1) 2-64 lost to Beaumaris (1) 16-94. Division 5 was at Narre Warren against Cockatoo for a comfortable win. Jos van Hout, Tracey Storm, Zade Bulmer and Ralph Devonshire led the scoring with a very strong 37-7 win, while Wally Finlayson, Jen Sherry, Alan Mark and Keith Mark also led all day to win 19-9. Ernesto Vergara, Sharon Bull, Brent Grigg and Peter Lister drew 19-19, but Tina Courtin, Wilma Haringsma, David Wilkinson and Stan Robinson went down 14-24. Narre Warren (2) 15-89 defeated Cockatoo (1) 3-59. Division 6 travelled to Armadale for a tight win. Leo McGeary, Janice Moran, Micki Horton and

Aaron Ottaway scored best, winning 26-8, while Rudi Pompe, Craig Moore, Colin Groom and Reg Johnstone won 23-21. Darren Moore, Pauline Kempf, Paul McNamara and Graham Dodd just missed out, losing 21-23, while Arlene Peters, Rose Rasmussen, Jim Kempf and Geoff Miller went down 16-33. Narre Warren (3) 14-86 defeated Armadale (5) 4-85. Division 7 was at home against Berwick and had a close loss. Len O’Brien, Helen McCarthy, Pam Uren and Michael Graham won 21-12, and Stan Birkett, Stan Bulmer, Laurie Baker and Andy Tobler held on to win 17-16. Arthur Fitt, John Green, Steven Boyd and Robert Beare finished strong to draw 13-13, but Ruth Tobler, Dale Collins, Gail Bowman and Pieter Castricum lost 13-27. Narre Warren (4) 5-64 lost to Berwick (8) 13-68.

Win for father-son combo at bowls CRANBOURNE BOWLS Cranbourne’s own father-son combination took on Keysborough for the first win of the season in pennant bowls. Skip Frank Byrne teamed up with his dad, Joe, to contribute to a 20-shot win against Keysborough on Saturday’s first round of pennant bowls for the season. SIDE 1 DIVISION 2 Playing away at Keysborough, new Skip, Frank Byrne, finished with a draw on his rink despite getting away to an early lead, and Skip John McKenna went down by two shots in a close finish.

But an outstanding performance by Skip Ron “Two Dogs” Lyfield and his rink of Paul O’Day, Peter Coulthup, and Tony Collins won by 10 shots, however fill-in skip Peter Elgar and his merry men and woman team of Lynne Wood, Hans Worstelling and Noel Hardy went two better with a 12-shot win. All in all a very satisfying start to the season with a 20-shot victory over strong opposition. Asked after the game if Frank got all his bowling skills and coaching from his dad, Frank answered “not entirely”. Perhaps

a man of few words, but it was great to see the two of them enjoying a beverage after the game and thoroughly enjoying each other’s company during the day. What a great opportunity for a son to play a sport with his dad, pure gold. SIDE 2 DIVISION 3 In a bit of a shock loss, home team Cranbourne were outplayed by Ferntree Gully by 27 shots despite being unbeatable in preseason form. The rinks of Hudson, Farrington and Dudink had narrow defeats, but Cranbourne just could

not get going and any chance of a win slipped away. Hopefully, this week was just a slight hiccup with better form expected next week against Mount Waverley. SIDE 3 DIVISION 5 Skip John Kent and his rink had a one shot win, but the remaining rinks went down in close contests to record a 20-shot loss to Churchill Waverley. SIDE 4 DIVISION 8 Cranbourne defeated Highett by walkover.

Gurpreet Bhamra, meanwhile, inspired Cranbourne Meadows to a crushing victory over Carlisle Park with an astonishing seven-wicket haul. In his first game for the Rebels, Bhamra skittled the Vikings with the figures of 7/23 off eight overs - including the first six scalps - with the home side ending the innings in just 24.4 overs and with 73 runs on the scoreboard. It took just 19 overs for the Rebels to chase down the lowly total, with former Kalgidhar batsman Sunny Paul (43 not out) enjoying his first outing with his new side. In other matches of the round, Devon Meadows easily accounted for newly relegated Pakenham Upper/Toomuc by seven wickets, with young batsman Nathan Worstelling (50 not out) scoring his maiden First XI half century, while Officer couldn’t quite reel in Clyde’s 196, falling just seven runs short. Cougars batsman Brett Reid unluckily fell for 99. Rounds 2 and 3 will be played this Saturday and Sunday from 1pm on both days in what will be the last batch of one-dayers until just before the Christmas break.

Bowls boost for Parkers with a win HAMPTON PARK BOWLS Round 2 of mid-week bowls gave the Hampton Park Division 2 side a boost with wins on two of the three rinks for an overall win of 14 points. Rhonda Diaper, Gary Gilchrist, Helen Lambert and skip Denise Eastick were right in it, but faded towards the finish (17-25). Geoff Ladner, Ian Kitt, Ellen Smith and skip Christine Hendrie led all the way to win by eight shots (18-10). Lou Soligo, Brian Diaper, Toni Sutton and skip Neville Hendrie stayed in front all day to win by nine shots (27-18). Division 1 (six a side) also had a good win while playing away. Ann Westwell, Gwen Clough with skip Stuart Tokley playing a tight game to win by two shots (18-16) while Jim Westwell, Ron Beverly and skip Ray Wood bolted from the start to finish 24 shots up. Saturday Pennant Division 2 travelled to Pakenham and only picked up two points for their effort. Val Moore, Trevor Harbright, Sean McDonald and skip John Nunan came from 10 shots down to miss by six shots (14-20) while Geoff Ladner, Ian Kitt, Christine Hendrie and skip Steve Barnes missed the win by one shot on the last end (1718). Mat McLaverty, Ellen

Jim Westwell gives Ray Wood another shot. Smith, Neville Hendrie and skip Warwick Hardy stalled on the last few ends to win by just one shot (19-18). Stan Hatch, Ken Cobden, Mark Paton and skip Larry Simpson had a day to forget with nothing going their way (11-28). Division 4 also picked up two points with Lou Soligo, Janice Collins, Craig Richards and skip Gavin Wilson holding off a big late charge by their opponents to win by three shots. Val Simpson, Dave Clarke, Rob Woff and skip Ron Beverly slipped a bit in the middle game to finish eight shots down (13-21) while Garry Perrin, Helen Lambert, Toni Sutton and skip Denise Eastick faltered near the end (14-22). The game was decided on the last two ends with Vince Kovacic, Stuart Tokley, Brian Diaper and skip Ray Wood missing by two shots (17-19). 12351514-EPJ19-17
