MORE TO LOVE The editor’s desk I had been anticipating a story in this week’s edition on the announcement of the next Queensland election, but as at time of printing of the Free Times this week no such announcement had been made. It could of course happen this coming Sunday, with time now starting to run out for ALP Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk to go to the polls before Christmas. The business sector in Queensland is crying out for an election and who can blame them? When the political climate is unstable, which it has been in this state since the last election, business confidence falls and key decisions are often put off until an election is held, if indeed the result creates at least some political certainty. Locally in our own state seat of Southern Downs we will have an interesting scenario to say the least, with veteran MP Lawrence Springborg to leave state politics. So far we have three candidates James Lister for the LNP, independent Rob Mackenzie and One Nation’s Josh Coyne, with the ALP yet to announce its candidate. History shows us that even in a safe seat, when a long-standing MP leaves the whole show opens up. Bring it on Annastacia Queensland needs to speak. ● Jeremy Sollars

THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT… LIFE BAN, HEFTY FINE A prominent Queensland harness racing driver has been fined $5000 after being convicted of three counts of match fixing in the harness racing industry. Barton Cockburn, 28, of Limestone Ridges in the Ipswich area was convicted last week in the Brisbane Magistrates’ Court of the offences, which the court heard were committed at Brisbane’s Albion Park Paceway in November 2016. He has also been banned for life from the racing industry and had his
licence cancelled. Cockburn was one of three people charged with match fixing offences in April this year by detectives from the Queensland Racing Crime Squad, after an investigation of match fixing allegations in the harness racing industry. The offences carry a maximum penalty of 10 years imprisonment. Cockburn was fined $5000 for all three offences and his convictions were not recorded after the court heard he had no previous criminal history, was remorseful and had been “a prominent
The Southern Downs Regional Council says it cannot provide a timeframe for assessment of a tender for the leasing out of the Warwick Saleyards to a private operator. As reported late last month the leasing out of the saleyards moved a step closer after the September meeting of the Southern Downs Regional Council. Councillors voted to move to a “refined tender process” after calling for expressions of interest (EOIs) for leasing out of the saleyards. A council statement issued on Friday 22 September referred to a “preferred respondent” from the EOI process who had been chosen to move to the next stage and submit a formal tender to the council. The statement did not name the interested party. The Free Times this week asked the council if it could provide details of how long the formal tendering process was likely to take and when a final decision on leasing out of the saleyards was expected to be made. A council spokeswoman said the “process between the preferred responder and council is ongoing, and therefore no specific timeframe can be given”. “A formal tender document will be required to be submitted,” the spokeswoman said. The move to the next stage of the process followed a meeting of the council’s Saleyards Advisory Committee on Thursday 7 September, the minutes of which were adopted by councillors in a confidential session of September’s council meeting. Mayor Tracy Dobie has continued to reiterate that the saleyards “are not for

The Warwick Saleyards. sale”, but many producers and livestock industry operators believe leasing the saleyards to a private operator represents an equal level of control of the facility by outside interests. Cr Dobie has also stated that the council can choose not to award a lease and continue to directly operate the saleyards. She said in September that while the council has run the saleyards effectively to this point, “professional experienced management is necessary to ensure best practice”. “Competitive pricing remains a priority for council, as competitors to both the north and south of Warwick are undertaking major upgrades to their facilities, including a $14 million facility upgrade at Casino,” she said. “Council also believes the saleyards have a unique opportunity to demonstrate the high quality of local produce on display, supporting the agricultural sector, which is the biggest contributor to the local economy. “Over the next few months the preferred respondent in the Expressions of Interest process will be requested to respond to issues raised by the council and the Saleyards Advisory Committee. “At the end of the tender process, council can choose to issue the tender, or cease the process. “It is important that the Warwick Saleyards function effectively, and remain competitive." ●

the mine’s future potential, it says the project will be approached “with caution”. “All of our test work and trials to date indicate these assets are highly prospective, and the upside we feel is significant,” the company’s statement on 3 October said. “However, given the prior issues with the site and commodity prices, we will be seeking to have a very cautious and constrained view at entry and advancement, to ensure the site can sustain the economic cycles of metals prices and exchange rates. “One of the most rewarding positions this (lease) grant has put us in, is the ability to seek to employ a raft of local and regional staff, having recently undertaken a recruitment campaign in Mackay and Dalby, and seeking to employ those staff throughout October 2017, for our January 2018 production ramp-up. “In line with the ethos of its parent company, MRV Metals will be seeking to hire local, and utilise local infrastructure and services wherever possible. “We have already made a significant impact in the day-to-day business community within Texas and more than 60 per cent of our current staff have all been recruited from the local area.” ●

The mining company which plans to re-start the formerly defunct Twin Hills silver mine at Texas says its testing and trials show the mine is still “highly prospective”. As reported last week, the silver mine has moved a step closer to re-starting operations, with MRV Metals having secured a Queensland Government mining lease over the site this month. MRV Metals is a wholly-owned subsidiary of stock exchange-listed company Moreton Resources. A company statement released on Tuesday 3 October says MRV Metals plans to develop “a mining precinct that will look to advance silver, copper, zinc and gold metals”. “The operations are scheduled to be fully operational by January 2018 and (we) seek from that stage, immediate positive cash flow,” the statement said. The mine is located six kilometres from Texas and was previously operated by Alcyone Resources, which went into receivership in 2014. Locals have held concerns over potential run-off from cyanide holding ponds at the defunct mine during heavy rainfall, but the State Government has issued repeated assurances the Dumaresq River catchment has not and will not be affected. The site also has abandoned mining infrastructure and stockpiles of unprocessed ore, and has been monitored in recent times by the State Government’s Abandoned Mines Unit. GIBBO BRINGS
THE BRAINS BY JEREMY SOLLARS

unters are in for a special treat at this year’s 2017 Warwick Cup, with Queensland racing identity Blair ‘Gibbo’ Gibson the special guest at Allman Park. For the ‘once a year’ punter or just the uninitiated, Gibbo is the brains behind popular racing website brissyraces.com.au, and he’ll be sharing his insights on the 2017 Cup field on Saturday. As well as tips for midweek and Saturday races in ‘Brissy’, Gibbo’s website is also packed with general news and views from the world of thoroughbred racing and boasts around 700,000 ‘page hits’ a year. Gibbo started the website six years ago at the behest of his wife Sascha - who decided it was time he put his racing interest and knowledge to practical use - and its following has ballooned since then. And it’s not his day job either - Gibbo has a full-time gig in the horticulture department at Brisbane’s Griffith
University, with which he juggles around 30 hours per week managing the website. You’ll be able to meet Gibbo at the Warwick Cup Calcutta tomorrow night - Friday 13 October, perhaps lucky for some - and he’ll be meeting race-goers throughout the day on Saturday and offering his Cup tips after reviewing the form. “I was a bit flattered to be asked to be the special guest this year,” Gibbo told the Free Times this week. “I have a big family connection with Allora - my dad was from there and my grandma Joyce Gibson still lives there. “The family is pretty scattered these days and I don’t get down there as often as I should. “It’ll also be my first Warwick Cup so I’m really looking forward to it. “Obviously I’ll be at the Calcutta and I’m looking at maybe doing a ‘best bets’ tip sheet we can hand around on Saturday.” Gibbo’s love of the horses began in childhood, growing

up in the Murwillumbah area with racehorses owned and trained by his dad. “My best mate’s dad is Bernie Quinn - he’s the longest serving turf club chairman in New South Wales, he’s still the chairman of the Tweed River Jockey Club after 40 years,” he said. “Racing used to be on a Monday and my mate and I would skip school and head over to the track.” Gibbo says the plan for the website was never to be “just about tips”. “A lot of websites ‘talk at you’ - my aim is to have tipping info but also general racing information of interest to punters,” he said. “The punting info is opinion-based but I also have press releases and interviews relevant to the racing industry. “It’s more of a knockabout kind of approach. “Melbourne Cup is coming up and obviously that’s where the interest is going to be.” Visit Blair ‘Gibbo’ Gibson’s website at www.brissyraces. com.au ●

The list of awarded contracts worth more than $200,000 each on the council’s website was recently updated after the Free Times queried why contracts awarded since October 2016 had not been publicly listed, as required under local government legislation. SES VOLUNTEERS GET AMONG THE MEDALS Warwick’s Roslyn Newley is among State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers across Queensland whose dedicated service has been formally recognised. SES South West Region personnel attended an award ceremony in Toowoomba last Saturday with Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Commissioner Katarina Carroll. She said SES Week - 7 to 15 October - provided an opportunity to recognise “the outstanding contribution of staff and volunteers”. “In times of crisis, the state turns to its more than 6000 SES members,” Ms Carroll said. “These volunteers selflessly donate their time and energy to assist their communities and SES Week is our chance to thank them for their wonderful service and dedication.” The South West Region is supported by more than 700 active SES volunteers from 45 groups. ‘Regional Unit of the Year’ was awarded to the
Warwick SES Unit for its co-ordination and execution of several search and rescue operations in conjunction with other emergency service agencies including the Queensland Police Service and Queensland Ambulance Service, resulting in the rescue of missing persons. SES Regional Manager Bob Bundy said the Warwick SES Unit “is a well-managed and highly trained unit which actively engages all its valued members”. “As a result, their members are always willing to put up their hands and provide a comprehensive service when their community needs them,” he said. SES Week certificates were presented to Roslyn Newley and other regional volunteers for “displaying exceptional dedication to their SES Units or Groups and their community”. A number of National Medals and clasps and SES Meritorious Medals and clasps were also presented to dedicated and deserving SES volunteers at the ceremony. ●

All smiles - Cody Cook, Emma McCallum, horse and dog physiotherapist, Barbara Schmoelzer, Warwick Arts Council representative and Luke Cook ready to take on Warwick Arts Council’s Kids, Pets and Art day on Saturday at the Cowboys Clubhouse. It was a big day of activities for all the family and their pets. Cody and Luke were on hand to keep everyone laughing. Robyn Monaghan, art co-ordinator, said they were “lovely down to earth young men”. “I got the biggest hug from both of them at the same time,” she said. “They are lovely young men and helped me to set up the art table and pitched in when necessary. While they were here, Luke adopted a dog from ARK Animal Welfare.” ●
The Southern Downs Artists Exhibition opening night was held at the Warwick Art Gallery with John James, Warwick potter, and Jason Gard from Rose City Shoppingworld, a sponsor of the ehibition. John James received a commendation award for his beautiful bowl on display now in the Southern Downs Artists Exhibition. The judges comments were: “This ceramic bowl from local clay has a timeless elegance. The hand of the artist is evident adding to the integrity of the piece. There is a reverence in the bowl that acknowledges pottery’s relationship to earth, fire, and water translated through the artist’s vision” John James Pottery will hold an open day Saturday 21 October from 9am at 99 Kurrajong Road, Warwick. John will be happy to show visitors how it all works. There will be pots for sale including some nice seconds. Morning tea is available. ●

NEWS NEW TOWER, MORE SIGNAL POWER Yangan and Emu Vale Optus customers will have mobile reception following the ‘switch-on’ of a new tower in the area, as part of the Federal Government’s Mobile Black Spot Program. The site - at Careys Road just south of Yangan - signals wide-area mobile and data reception for Yangan and Emu Vale. This forms part of a greater network investment program being undertaken by Optus with the Federal and State Government to deliver coverage in 21 locations across regional Queensland. Optus has co-located its equipment on the existing NBN tower at Careys Road. Optus vice-president of Regulatory and Public Affairs Andrew Sheridan told the Free Times Optus was “pleased to be a part of the Federal Government’s Mobile Black Spot Program and to be able to deliver crucial telecommunications infrastructure to regional and remote areas across Australia”. “Optus remains committed to coand individual investment across a range of townships and locations in regional Australia that helps us provide coverage and reach in areas that we otherwise may not have been able to,” Mr Sheridan said. Meanwhile, Optus Warwick licensees Scott and Lynelle Reimer are thrilled to have opened their new store in Rose City Shoppingworld. The Warwick-based couple - who are also licensees of the Optus store in Inverell which they opened back in 1997 - took over the Warwick outlet in 2001. It operated as a ‘kiosk-style’ outlet in its original digs in Rose City Shoppingworld, and now the new fully fledged store offers customers a larger and more comfortable space and

GARDEN TIME
BEATRICE HAWKINS
THIS ONE’S PLUM GORGEOUS I recently helped a friend plant a loropetalum “plum gorgeous” as I am told they are extremely hardy and I know how beautiful they look in full flower. Where it is planted it will have to prove very hardy as there has been a number of casualties of so-called hardy plants previously! As with most plants they respond to good soil and good drainage and will thrive if given care and attention. However I am told they will also grow quite happily in clay and are not too fussy in their requirements. Once established they take little water to keep them going but do not like to dry out over extended periods of heat. As with most things, mulching is very beneficial and will help with water retention and a dose of slow release fertiliser in Spring will be helpful. They are also frost hardy so will suit a very wide range of areas. As they grow nicely in a dense dome shape naturally, they require little pruning other than to keep them neat or shaped to your pleasure. They will grow to about 1.5 metres high with a spread of about two metres, liking full sun but will tolerate some shade. A remarkably easy care plant, they can be used trimmed as a hedge, their weeping habit makes them ideal in an Asian inspired garden and they are a stunning feature plant and are even suitable for growing in pots. Two in pots either side of my front door on my front patio would look really nice. I may have to give that idea some
consideration and search out some good pots to complement them! I have seen one in a front yard near where I live that has been pruned into a ball about four-feet in diameter. In full flower in Spring it looked absolutely spectacular! These hardy shrubs were first found in Hun an province of China and are native to Japan. They are closely related to witch hazel. Their common name is “Chinese Fringe Flower” and the Australian bred ‘Plum Gorgeous’ is the best of the loropetalums for foliage colour. Even without the spectacular raspberry coloured flowers in Spring and Autumn, they are a great addition to any landscape with their year-round deep purple foliage. A common complaint about these hardy shrubs is that they lose some of their lovely foliage colour in summer but it would appear that Plum Gorgeous is not as affected as some others, maintaining its

I am at home again and my garden has not fared too badly while I have been away thanks to the ministrations of a lovely neighbour. I have been mowing, dead-heading and cutting back and things are much better than I feared they might be! I couldn’t resist a trip to the nurseries and came home with some lovely beefsteak and grosslisse tomato plants and some “blackberry” vinca plants. After the great show the vincas gave last summer and the amount of self-seeded plants that are appearing, I thought this spectacular - almost black - variety would give a nice contrast to the white, pink, red and purple ones I expect from last year. I also found some black and white muscat variety grape vines and think I am going to have to find a spot for them. Black Muscat grapes are my alltime favourite table variety and so hard to get with the public’s current liking for seedless varieties. They are the variety I grew up eating from an uncle’s vineyard at Mudgee in NSW. My uncle used to send them down by the case on rail to the coast for us. ●

deep purple colour year round. While Plum Gorgeous may be the most spectacular for flower and foliage colours, loropetalums come in a range of colours from white to pale yellow flowers with green leaves, through varying degrees of pink with bronze or purple foliage right up to Plum Gorgeous! I really like the name and whoever came up with it deserves credit as it really is very evocative and describes the shrub beautifully in the Australian vernacular. I hope the one planted thrives as it will be the first thing seen as you enter the house yard gate. Garden Competition entries closed on Friday and by the time you read this the judging of the 35 gardens will have been completed. Entries came from the Warwick town area, Leyburn and Allora so it will have been an interesting trip around with the judge, Barry Murphy, from Stanthorpe. Although entries are down on last year it was to be expected given the dry and discouraging year we are experiencing. Thankyou to all those who have braved the elements and entered the competition. Don’t forget St Mark’s rose show or the Horticultural Societies Spring Flower Show next week. Entries are free and will be accepted on Wednesday morning from 8am until 10am, with judging then and the show open to the public from midday. Or come and enjoy a light lunch and cuppa and catch up with friends. ●

$11M IN FLOODING FUNDING POURS IN
BARNABY BACKS CHAMBER The Stanthorpe and Granite Belt Chamber of Commerce this week received a letter from Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce supporting the chamber’s desire to become the new proponent for the Emu Swamp Dam feasibility study. Chamber president Ian Henderson said the chamber was “very excited at this prospect and will be working on strategies to become the proponent and fast-track the feasibility study project”. “The Deputy Prime Minister, through the National Water Infrastructure Development Fund (NWIDF), committed funding of $3.97m for this feasibility study,” Mr Henderson said. “Some of these funds have already been spent on initial investigations by the Southern Downs Regional Council. “Emu Swamp Dam is a priority for irrigators and key to growing the economy of the Southern Downs. “Barnaby Joyce is a strong advocate for advancing agriculture in Australia and developing water infrastructure is critical to the development of a more prosperous and resilient agricultural sector. “Projects like Emu Swamp Dam, that can provide increased economic benefits, and stronger regional communities are what the NWIDF was established for.” Mr Henderson said Mr Joyce was “keen that a new proponent can be established quickly to allow the remaining $3.52m of funds allocated to be spent on the engineering design, business case and
Barnaby Joyce planning approvals”. “The council has expressed to Mr Joyce that they do not propose to advance the study and were open to a third party taking on the grant for this work, thus allowing another proponent to be appointed,” he said. “The Stanthorpe Chamber of Commerce is thrilled to be granted this opportunity by the Deputy Prime Minister. “The opportunity to take on the detailed business case came as a result of a submission to him from the chamber and the Stanthorpe Community Reference Panel. “A subsequent meeting with the Deputy Prime Minister and the leaders of these two organisations was also recently conducted where Mr Joyce offered his support to this project continuing with the remainder of the existing grant. ●
LETTERS
The Southern Downs Regional Council will receive $11 million in funding from the Federal and State Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA) to fix flood damage from Cyclone Debbie earlier this year. Mayor Tracy Dobie said this week that while our water supply benefitted from the heavy rainfall associated with Debbie “some of our local roads did not, sustaining significant damage”. “Due to the high level of damage, and the opportunity to receive support through the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA), council did not attempt to fix all the damage immediately, instead undertaking only sufficient remedial work to enable the continued use of the damaged roads,” she said. “I would like to pass on my thanks and appreciation to those residents who have shown such patience, driving on these roads that have undergone only temporary repair. “However if council had undertaken to fully repair these roads immediately, it would have been at our ratepayers’ expense. “All levels of government - local, state and federal - are fully aware of the cost of restoring roads damaged by flooding and know that it is beyond the capacity of local councils and ratepayers.
Flood debris from the Cyclone Debbie rain in March, trapped under the Victoria Street bridge in Warwick. “Over the last six months council staff in conjunction with NDRRA representatives have undertaken an extensive damage assessment of the region’s road network and found that approximately 300 kilometres of roads sustained damage from ex-Tropical Cyclone Debbie. “Council has now received advice that the Queensland Reconstruction Authority, which has oversight of NDRRA, has approved reconstruction work projects in the Southern Downs. “Council has received approval for $11 million in funding so far, and council has made further submissions for which approval is expected in the short term. “This is in addition to the funds that council expended immediately after the disaster to restore critical road infrastructure and connectivity.” ●

GOD'S WORD REJECTED It would appear that freedom of speech, freedom of thought, freedom of conscience and freedom of religion are already being outlawed in Queensland. A Stanthorpe Church had legally displayed on Queensland Rail property, a sign stating that in Mark 10:6, Jesus said “God made them Male and Female.” Evidently same-sex marriage activists pressured Queensland Rail to have the message removed. It is deplorable that in 2017 in Queensland and the ‘free’ country of Australia, the words of Jesus are no longer permitted to be written or spoken or broadcast. What will happen next? Will Bible-believing Christians no longer be permitted to publicly remind people that “God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life” (Jn.3:16).
God’s word is being rejected, disregarded and considered to be offensive. Let’s have some backbone and commonsense. May we vote ‘NO’ to a contempt for God’s word -the Bible. And may we vote ‘no’ to changing our Creator God’s institution of marriage, which is between a man and a woman. Peter Wiggins, Warwick.
LET'S BE BLUNT In response to Peter Wiggins’ letter to the editor on the same sex marriage survey, and others in recent weeks, I’d like to make my own view on the topic clear. More than anything, I feel strongly that spending $122 million on a non-binding postal survey - as opposed to a referendum held in conjunction with a federal election is a scandalous waste of public money. One only needs to look at the state of national highways in this region, let alone the state
of other infrastructure and public services here and elsewhere, to realise that. It’s also a waste of money because it’s 2017 for goodness sake, and same sex marriages should have the same legal and social status as straight ones, including what happens with children, property and assets should the marriage come to an end. And as far as children are concerned, the idea that children cannot be raised to be happy and healthy individuals by a same-sex couple is as absurd as suggesting that children from single parent families, or those whose straight parents split up, will somehow have less of a shot at a successful and fulfilling life. Despite the progress our society has made in accepting difference, there is still stigma attached to being gay and it is felt particularly by young people. Rates of mental illness and suicide are still too high among young gay people, and that is to our shame as a society and to the families of
young gay people who distance themselves from them, or cut them off completely. And don’t tell me there aren’t gay people out there masquerading in a ‘straight’ marriage because for whatever reason they haven’t come out, including those with children. Is it really better - for everyone concerned - for that person and parent to be living a lie? I am politically conservative - although I probably lean back towards the centre and I have voted ‘Yes’ in the survey, as will a lot of other conservative straight people. The end result may of course be closer than many ‘Yes’ voters are expecting, but I believe the ‘Yes’ case will get over the line. And if it does, we can only hope the Turnbull Government will act accordingly and make it law, and then we can all move on to far more pressing issues. Jeremy Sollars, Free Times editor.

THE AUCTION PROCESS EXPLAINED AUCTION clearance rates are improving with the numbers of registered buyers and crowds also increasing across Queensland. If you’re planning to bid at auction, the REIQ strongly recommends securing preapproval for your finance and organising a building and pest inspection on the property beforehand. While the numbers of homes sold by auction in Queensland may only be relatively small when compared to NSW and Victoria, it is an increasingly popular method of sale which requires buyers to fully understand the process. A very important part of the auction process is that the successful bidder on auction day will be required to sign the Contract of Sale and pay the required deposit on the spot. There is no cooling off period when you buy a residential property at auction in Queensland. Open house days and inspections by appointment are the best time to make inquiries, get a copy of the Contract of Sale, take a good look around the property and clarify particulars. It is also the time when building and pest inspections should be conducted. A reminder though - inspections can only be carried out with the permission of the owners and will be at the prospective buyer’s cost. The REIQ recommends buyers consider obtaining inspection reports, as properties sold under the hammer are unconditional. It’s also important to arrive early on auction day. This gives the buyer the chance to review the terms and conditions
of auction and make sure there are no late changes to the Contract of Sale and get themselves ready to bid. The auction process itself is strictly defined by legislation to ensure fairness for both buyers and sellers. Legislation requires all people bidding at auction to provide their names, addresses and proof of identity prior to bidding. This information must be provided for a bid to be accepted during an auction. The bidder will be provided with a number, which must be displayed if you make a bid during the course of the auction. It is important to remember that you don’t have to bid just because you have registered, but you must be registered if you intend to bid. Tips for bidding at auction include: · Position yourself to that the auctioneer can see you; · Hold up your bidder number and call out your bid in an audible voice; · You can either call out an exact amount, or indicate the increment you wish to increase the previous bid by (this increment may be suggested by the auctioneer); · At the start of the auction, the auctioneer will announce if the property is to be sold with or without a reserve price. · The auction may refuse to accept a bid It is also important to keep to your budget during the auction because if you are the successful bidder, you will be the new owner of the property. ●

MICK BRINGS OUT ALL THE BIG GUNS BY JEREMY SOLLARS
12366975-CB40-17
Mick Bradford’s beloved Clydesdales will delight once again this year.
The rolling Swanfels Valley east of Warwick will once again be the backdrop for this year’s Heavy Horse Charity Day at the property of popular local identity Mick Bradford. The 17th Heavy Horse Day is on this Sunday 15 October from 9am, and will feature a packed program of working old-time farming displays including blacksmithing, wheelwrighting, hay-making, chaff-making and corn-shelling - and all done with true horsepower. Mick’s Clydedales are something of a local icon and never fail to impress, and this year they’ll again be joined by two teams of bullocks who will haul timber and wagons, recalling the region’s rich timber industry heritage. And visitors to Mick’s property could be treated to a fly-in by an RACQ LifeFlight helicopter, with all proceeds from the day going to the airborne medical rescue service. The day is also run in conjunction with the Killarney Lions Club. “Bring the kids for a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see how things used to be done, without all the show and shine,” Mick said. “The Killarney Lions will again have food and drink in the big blue tent. “There will also be pancakes, ice-cream and syrup, Sno Cones, camp oven damper, an ice-cream van, market stalls, jumping castle and an animal nursery. “Displays will include axes, whips, horse bits, harness making, and a local blacksmith and wheelwright.” Mick will be working his famous “horse works” which pumps water, threshes corn and slices pumpkin. THE SPIN
SPOTLIGHT ON REARDON'S DAY DUTY Whether you are a Holden or Falcon tragic, motor sport enthusiasts normally put a great deal of planning into their Bathurst weekend - be it a stay-at-home barbecue or the annual pilgrimage many locals make to the mountain. Then there are those of us who are once-a-year enthusiasts and have no great allegiances but who regularly tune in for the latter stages of “the race" confident we can hold our own in a conversation. Last weekend was more enthralling than normal and had many glued to the coverage as Warwick product Matt Campbell took up the co drivers spot beside Shane van Gisberg in the Red Bull Motor Racing car 97. Mount Panorama never fails to deliver up some extraordinary twists and sometimes even fairytales. Sunday was no exception as the weather rolled in across the mountain, making conditions in the opening laps treacherous. Matt Campbell had an early scare when he spun out at the cutting early in the day, but recovered well and showed plenty of fight and ticker. The attrition rate at the back end of Bathurst is always high, and Sunday was no exception. Van Ginsberg and Campbell worked hard all day, and with 20 laps remaining our number 97 had the lead and a legion of local supporters dared to dream for the 23-year-old. With conditions on the mountain and in the straight changing constantly, errors were playing a big part. After an extraordinary drive which saw Van Gisbergen clock one of the fastest laps of the day - there was heartbreak as he speared off down the escape road at a restart on lap 144, then had a massive off at the Chase trying to recover. With just laps to go, Van Gisberg drove the ears off the 97 car to get back to fifth as the team and their supporters were left like many others in pit lane to ponder on what might have been. Hats off to winning drivers David Reynolds and Luke Youlden and Betty Klimenko and the small Erebus team seems that the fairy godmother of Bathurst does make some dreams come true while for others it becomes another tough day at the office. Van Gisberg and Campbell will be out to make amends at the Gold Coast this weekend, and once again Campbell will have plenty of local support. My TV will be tuned to watch. - Casey REARDON ON WORLD STAGE Stanthorpe golfer Luke Reardon had an excellent round in Saturday’s local club competition finishing with the Best Gross of 71 in the single stableford competition. For Reardon, it was a nice segue between international flights and the heady scene of International Golf. Only four days earlier he was shaking hands with former US Presidents Bill Clinton, George Bush and Barack Obama and current President Donald Trump. Mixing it on the world stage with the best in the golf business including Jordan Speith, Dustin Johnson, Ricky Fowler, Brooks Phil Mickelson, Adam Scott, Louis Oosthuizen and long-time mate, Jason Day. So how did all of this transpire. It began with Reardon’s enrolment at the Hills Golf academy as a promising young golfer and the start of a lasting friendship with his roommate Jason Day. 22 SOUTHERN FREE TIMES
|
Luke Reardon, pictured with his father and captain of the Stanthorpe Golf Club, at the completion of last Saturday's competition. Recently when Day’s mentor and long-term caddy opted to cut back on the demands of tour, the former World No 1 had no hesitation in seeking out Reardon who he has often said was the better player between them, to take over the caddy role. Since then, Reardon has carried the bag for his mate in three tournaments in the US including last week’s President’s Cup played at the Liberty National Golf Club in Jersey City where the Statue of Liberty is the backdrop. Twelve of the best US players compete against a 12-player International Team selected from all countries outside of Europe. Tradition is, that the US President attends and speaks with the 24 players and their caddies, and this tradition continued this year. Reardon reflected on what was a great moment in his life meeting the Presidents, saying it was on a par with the friendships he has established with people such as Tiger Woods, Adam Scott and Cameron Smith. Not the footballer but another young Australia making his mark on the US PGA tour. Because of Jason Day’s world ranking, both he and Reardon get plenty of TV exposure. Reardon’s entry into the international golf arena has been well documented on Foxtel’s Golf Channel with viewing audience of millions, and he has not missed the opportunity to plug his hometown. Luke Reardon said of his home course, “The golf course here is more challenging than it looks, and has its own quirks and challenges and it would have been a tragedy if it was lost to the community. “I always look forward to playing here when I come home, and each time I can see the improvements that have been made around the course by the volunteers”. Reardon said it was encouraging to find four school-aged juniors playing in Saturday’s local competition. He encourages juniors to take up any sport saying, “Look where it has taken me.” Luke’s father Richard is captain of the Stanthorpe Golf Club and when asked if he was proud of Luke’s achievements, he answered simply “I am proud of all of my children”. This week Reardon finds himself back on another international flight headed for China as Jason Day prepares for the Asian Golf tour. Following the Asian competition, he will take a break and will be back in Stanthorpe enjoying a hit on the local course where he holds the club record of six under par 66 and spending quality time with his family. He will return to the USA in 2018 for the

nationwide PGA tour circuit which includes the Masters at Augusta and the US Open at Shinnecock Hills where he will be working with his former roomie to recapture that sought-after and lucrative No 1 world ranking. MATURE TEAM SHOW THE WAY The final of the Tannymorel club selected bowls pairs was played on Saturday 30/09. Joel Farmer and Darren Rabbit took on Gordie Assay and Grumpy. After completing 21 ends of great bowls the 2017 winner were the more mature pairing of Assay and Grumpy. They gave their younger opponents a few lessons on the green winning 21-12. The first round of the new Tanny Classic competition got underway. If you did not get to play in the opening round, you can still join the fun - nominate by 6pm this Friday night or call Thommo (0458 016 539) or Gordie (0427 289 680). Bowlers and non bowlers are welcome, with organisers, declaring the more the merrier. PREPARING FOR STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS The Single Action shoot held at Inglewood saw Ross Jackson claim a win. Minor placings were claimed by Ray Dudgeon and Stephanie Dudgeon. While the competition blazed away, two of the locals, Tom Donald and Scruffy Morgan took the opportunity to brush up Qld Muzzle Loading State championships. Preparations are well underway for the State Championships which the Inglewood Club will host next weekend. S.S.A.A. Muzzleloaders use all types of original and replica muzzle loading rifles, shotguns, pistols and cap and ball percussion revolvers. Most of the excellent replicas available are made in Italy, with others coming from the USA, Spain, Japan, England and other European countries. The Championships get underway from Friday when the range on Bosjnaks Road will be open for practice. The official program gets underway on Saturday with the championships running over two days. Admission to the event is free and spectators are welcome, however, nominated shooters must be members of the SSAA. Camping is available at the site. Further information is available on the Inglewood Club’s Facebook page. CLOSE FINISHES IN GATEBALL There was plenty of activity on the Stanthorpe croquet court on Friday morning as the gateball crew organised themselves into teams for the morning’s play. Team One, Andrea Denkewitz, Sharyn Roser and Les Williams took on Margaret
Dickenson, Jenny Tunbridge, Joy Newman and Val Fancourt, Team Two. The first game was a closely fought affair until Team Two scored late points in the final minutes of the game and came away with a 12-8 win. The second game could not have been closer with the game finishing in an 11-all tie. On cutback, both teams had the same number of one and two point scores. A ’shoot-out’ was necessary to break the deadlock, and it was Team One who won with a 4-3 score. After the break, Bill Golding joined Team One and in another very close game it was Team One who snuck home with a 12-9 win at the end of the 30 minutes. Team One went on to win the final game of the day scoring a run away 17-8 win. A reminder that there will be no gateball or croquet sports over the next couple of weeks as the court undergoes some running repairs. Two of our Stanthorpe’s regular gateballers, Andrea Denkewitz and Margaret Dickenson, are heading off to Bateau Bay (NSW) to play in the Australian Gateball Team Championships, and will join the Toowoomba team. Twentyfour teams from around the country and six international teams play in the Championships this weekend. RAWLINGS ON THE PODIUM On a busy Bathurst Sunday, Phil Zikan got the chequered flag ahead of runner-up John Rawlings. Figuring in the run downs were Jim Mitchell and Terry Roser who also scored the Best Gross but missed out on a podium finish. Wattsy was on song on the 12th and 17th picking up both pin shots. Paul Armstrong claimed the Pro Pin. Angelo Tee off this Sunday is at the normal time of 8am, however, a reminder to Sporters to mark Sunday 28 October in their diaries as a day off as there will be no Sporters due to the Stanthorpe Golf Carnival. BUSY WEEKEND FOR LOCAL GOLFERS A busy weekend for Stanthorpe golfers culminated with the mixed foursomes championships on Sunday. The championship event is played over 27 holes and the alternate shot format saw the trophy going to team Waterworth, Matt and Nikki. Things were tight at the top of the leader board, with just one and two shots between the top three finishers. Lyle Bryant and Edith Stewart used their combined handicaps well to earn the best nett score on the day. Saturday’s competition sponsored by 4 Waters Supplies was for the October monthly medal and putting competition. David Burgess returned nett 69 to claim the medal, and is the last qualifier for the Medal of Medallists event which will be decided next month. Bob Watts, managed to take out the runner-up spot despite playing under some duress with a badly swollen hand. Luke Reardon returned from his golf duties overseas and after brushing shoulders with the biggest names in the game. He returned the best gross score of the day, 71, had the least putts for the round (24), and added the pin shot at three and a ball in the run down. He may have to pay excess luggage fee when he next leaves for overseas. Matt Waterworth and Max Hunter held the remaining pin shots at 12 and 17. Pro-pins went to Chris Fittock at 1/10, Rod Werner at 5/14 and John Spiller at 9/18. freetimes.com.au
email: wickets-stpe@bigpond.com
The ladies event was won by Lyn Ludlow with nett 75. Lyn also had best gross score of 93. Margie Locke’s score of nett 76 saw her take the runner’s-up spot. Helen Jones had the least number of putts, 29 for her round and Madeline Jarman held best approach at 17 for the ladies. In the run down, it was a ball to all with scores of 71 and better. Special award given to Neta Thouard who was unable to complete the round due to an injury to one of her nails. Hope you get better soon. This Saturday is 'Tee off for Breast Cancer Research.’ Funds raised during this special event will be donated to this charity. The single stableford event is sponsored every year by Heritage Bank. Prizes are awarded for the Best Dressed Golfer and Best Dressed Buggy. The event is a single stableford with a shot gun start at 11.45 am. Registration should be completed by 11.15am, allowing adequate time for judging the fashions and best decorated buggy. This is always a popular and fun event - there is a time sheet on the board at the club house if you wish to nominate. TACTICS PLAY THEIR PART Two games of golf croquet were decided last week. Both were shortened nine because of time constraints. As players become more adept at the game, they are becoming far more tactical in their games which has the domino effect of making each game longer, however, it adds to the challenge and intrigue of the games. Dianne Wren, though not fully recovered from recent illness, was back in action and
Stanthorpe's Luke Reardon is enjoying the opportunity that has come his way after being called on to caddie for long time mate and former World No 1 Jason Day.
The whips will be cracking on Saturday at Allman Park for the running of the Warwick Cup.
in good form and finished with the best two game score of 10 hoops. In the opening game, Dianne Wren, Bev Sullivan and Justin Liddy had a one-point win over Marian Castles, Elaine Brown and Shirley Page in a tight game. The final score 9-8. In the second game, Dianne Wren teamed with Bev Sullivan and Elaine Brown and defeated Justin Liddy, Shirley Page and Marian Castles 9-7 in another close encounter. Work has begun this week on improvements to the court surface and arrangements have been made with the bowls club for the use of one of their greens for the golf croquet games. Special thanks to Justin Liddy and the bowls club for arranging this interim solution which means players will not miss three weeks of play while the work on the court is completed. DIAMONDS SPARKLE The Samsung Diamonds have bounced
after their recent loss to the New Zealand Silver Ferns to claim a three-goal win in the opening game of the trans-Tasman clash, Constellation Cup. After losing the Netball Quad Series trophy against the Ferns in September, the Diamonds played with renewed vigour and passion leading by eight goals in the second quarter. The Diamonds led 29 - 25 into the main break. A nail-biting final term saw the Silver Ferns hit back, but the Australians came away with a three-goal victory. Captain Caitlin Bassett was full of praise for the Diamonds’ midcourt players, saying their efforts were fantastic and make the job of getting the ball moving much easier. The final quarter developed into a real arm wrestle, both sides putting everything on the line. The Diamonds were able to maintain their composure under pressure to hold onto a three-goal final margin.

The team travel to Christchurch on Friday, before the second Constellation Cup test on Sunday 8 October at 2pm local time. AT THE STARTING GATES FOR WARWICK CUP MEETING Excitement is building as the committee of the Warwick Turf Club gear up for a bumper crowd at the seven-race Warwick Cup meeting on Saturday. Nominations for the meeting have been outstanding. One of the top fancies for the $25,000 2017 Warwick Cup is sure to be the well credentialed Grafton Galloper Belflyer. The six-year-old gelding who has a win on the track to his credit recently won the 1400 metre Comm Cup at Ballina. Prior to that he won the Moree Cup and was second in the Casino Cup. Twenty-four runners have nominated for the Cup, so a full field is all but assured. The Frasers Transport Newmarket is also another popular race on the club’s signature weekends meeting. Toowoomba-based Ben Currie, Queensland leading trainer in 2016 has Captain’s Angel nominated for the Newmarket and several other runners in supporting races. The meeting has also attracted interest from several Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast-based trainers as well as regular country Queensland and NSW trainers. While there are plenty of racegoers (men and women) putting together their race day outfits for the Fashions on the Field competition, race club officials are putting the final touches on the course which after recent rain should be in top condition for the meeting. ●
