Can we fit in? By Derek Schlennstedt A big issue facing CFA brigades in rural areas is property access. Some gates are too small for tankers to fit through, and a truck must be able to turn around once in. At three metres wide, seven metres long and another three metres in height, it is clear to see why a fire truck is considered a heavy vehicle and why it requires 30 metres of space to turn around. That space to turn is paramount in an emergency, and if they can’t turn around they won’t be coming down your driveway. CFA captain at Montrose Rob Waters said that fire trucks would enter a property for a number of reasons including bushfire response. “On rural properties, depending on the locality of the house, we may enter the property ... it also depends on the fire and where it is,” Rob said. “The key point is that overheard branches need to be cleared and to make sure that if we have access we have enough to do so.”
At three metres wide, three metres high and seven metres long, can a fire truck enter your property? “If we’re going to enter a property, that’s one thing we always think about, we need to have an escape route ... we’ll also determine how we are going to exit if things do go pear shaped.” For house fires and even bushfires, Rob reiterated the importance of property owners keeping their house numbers clearly visible.
“Make sure your house number is visible, that’s very important,” he said. “Have your house clearly numbered on the side of street, time is crucial in some instances whether you’re going there for a house fire or bushfire of some sort, and it could take minutes to work out where you are, if we can’t see the house number.”

Wildfire bunkers are rated to the highest current Australian Standard (BAL-FZ), Bushfire Attack Level - Flame Zone. Each year in Australia, the weather seems to become more unpredictable, with higher than average winds and extreme temperatures. Forecasts from the Climate Institute of Australia and the CSIRO predict that Australia will experience an increasing occurrence of wildfire events that threaten life and property. The fire season will start earlier and last longer and will be more intense throughout the season’s length. Residents who live in isolated areas of surrounding bushland are at high risk during the bushfire season and may wish to consider the installation of a bushfire shelter. When situations change and the time to execute your evacuation plan has been cut short, a wildfire safety bunker could be a resident’s last option. Anthony Tratt, owner and
A safety bunker could be a resident’s last option. 146331 managing director of Wildfire Safety Bunkers, said it could be a smart option. “We have been in the bushfire shelter business for many years now and our products have been welcomed by residents Australia wide,” he said. “I believe the reasons our units have become so popular is that they have been extensively tested and accredited by

Right fire hose counts Fire Hose Warehouse is based in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, but they deliver anywhere. It’s time to put together the elements required to defend your property from the summer heat or even a bushfire. You may not be able to rely on mains pressure water during a fire, so alternative water supply is crucial. Fire Hose Warehouse doesn’t sell pumps, but make sure yours is a quality Australian made one that won’t let you down. To choose a hose kit,
step out the distances required for the suction line as well as the delivery lines. Remember to look carefully at the fire nozzles. At the end of the day, these determine how much water is used, not the pump. Fire Hose Warehouse has the widest range of firefighting hose and hose kits. For something different, check out the ‘Scotty Water Wall’ on You Tube. Visit www.firehosewarehouse.com.au or call 9770 8886.

Pet safety plan By Derek Schlennstedt When preparing your bushfire survival plan, you also need to plan and prepare for the safety of your pets. Although people may be able to get in the car and leave, often larger animals such as horses have to be left behind. How can owners ensure the survival of their big pets? Whether your horses are located at home or on an agistment property, you must plan and prepare for their safety. The CFA suggests that owners move their horses to a safer location before Severe, Extreme or Code Red fire danger days and remove all gear, including rugs. On Severe, Extreme or Code Red days, it is better to move your horses to a designated safer paddock or area. This could mean a large eaten out paddock or a series of smaller eaten out paddocks with the internal gates left open, as horses are more likely to escape the fire if they have room to move. A large sand manege can also provide protection, provided there are no buildings or vegetation close-by that could catch fire. A horse’s natural instinct is to run from danger including bushfire and they will quickly move to burnt ground to survive so it is important you do not lock your horses in a small area or stable. Finally, permanently identify your horses by microchipping or branding them. If your horse is difficult to catch, consider leaving a leather halter on with identification tags. Finally, CFA urges horse owners and livestock owners to register their property with a Property Identification Code (PIC) through the Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources (DEDJTR).

FIRE ACTION 13 - 20 October 2017 WEEK Putting out the fire Keep garden fire-wise Aiming to install high-performance sprinkler systems economically, expeditiously and with minimum disruption to the client, Blaze Control are Australian suppliers of fixed bushfire sprinkler systems and mobile bushfire sprinkler systems. As company owner Bill Hayes explained, the team at Blaze Control has spent countless hours developing comprehensive sprinkler systems to protect buildings of all styles, methods of construction and size. As trained firefighters, Blaze Control applies their training to continually improve on their products and can help advise their customers on property protection. “South Eastern Australia is recognised as having one of the highest bushfire risks anywhere in the world,” Bill said. “The periodic fires that devastate areas of the state and result in costly property damage and at times loss of life provided the impetus leading to the formation of Blaze Control. “The result of the combined efforts of a master plumber and a production engineer, both CFA firefighters, was to provide the best possible protection for the home owner from the rav-

“We also ensure our systems are as affordable as possible and we’re continuously developing, improving and upgrading our installation methods, equipment, product range and customer liaison with the aim to remain market leaders.” Blaze Control is located at 10 Gardiner Street in Lilydale. Fire. The word resonates with residents throughout the Yarra Ranges and can bring back memories of Black Saturday and Ash Wednesday. Each year as summer approaches, residents in fireprone areas have to clean their gardens and remove plants to reduce the risk of fire. But, just because you may live in a fire risk location, does not mean you have to sacrifice a bright and welcoming garden. The Ash Wednesday Bushfire Education Centre (AWBEC) in Cockatoo has constructed an interactive fire-wise garden to prove not all fire-wise plants are dull and colourless. “No plant is fireproof, and all will burn but some are more resistant to heat,” Graham Simpson, chairperson at AWBEC, said. The new fire-wise garden is designed to help educate the community on how to implement a fire-wise garden and reduce loads. With pebbles offering much more resistance than flammable mulch and various small but bright plants, the fire-wise garden offers a perfect example of how to beautify and reduce fire risk around your property.
A new garden at AWBEC in Cockatoo shows Dandenong Ranges residents that fire-wise gardens can be colourful and inviting, and still reduce fire risk. “It’s to pick plants that don’t readily ignite - what this firewise garden does is that it has signs with a QR code, which will take you to the CFA website which can tell you if your plants at home have a low or moderate fire risk,” he said. “These plants are all designed so they don’t touch each other, so the fire can’t jump to the next one.” All the plants at the AWBEC fall into the low to moderate fire
risk range and many are native indigenous plants, which are perfect for attracting wildlife and birdlife to your backyard. Some of the plants include winter delight grevilleas, birthday candle banksias, bright and colourful lily pillies, and succulent red kangaroo paw. Graham said it was not difficult to create a firewise garden and that anyone could do it with plants readily available and reasonably priced.

Brigade scouting for volunteers By Bonny Burrows Upper Ferntree Gully Fire Brigade is seeking some fresh blood to join its “family”. The volunteer brigade nested at the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges has a coverage area that is one of the most diverse in the state. “We’ve got two totally different areas to manage,” Captain Peter Smith said. “There’s Lysterfield with threestorey multi-million dollar houses and then there’s Upper Gully - there’s not much development here,” he said. With the National Park, which attracts 60,000 to 70,000 people a month, and one of the busiest maternity hospitals around - The Angliss - on its doorstep, the brigade is kept busy all year round. Its team of 36 firefighters and five non-operational members are swept off their feet, responding to an average of 150 call outs a year. These jobs not only comprise residential and bushfires but car crashes, flood control, and assistance to other emergency services. “We’ve all locals, so we’ve know the area inside and out. Our knowledge is used a lot (by others),” Mr Smith said. Being volunteers, UFTG CFA
Upper Ferntree Gully First Lieutenant Darren Johnson practises drills with daughter and rookie firefighter Amber Johnson. Picture: DARYN REDMAN members juggle their firefighter commitments with work and family. As a result, the brigade wants local residents with daytime availability to join its ranks. Mr Smith said this would appeal to
mums and dads with school-aged children or any part time, casual workers over the age of 16. “We have the most shortfall during the day as our members leave the area for work. So that 9am to 3 or 4pm timeslot is our hardest to fill,” he said.
“So anyone available during the day would be fantastic.” For those interested, there is no cost. All gear is provided and volunteers are put through a four to six month
training course prior to their first turnout. For those who join, Mr Smith said they could expect to join “a very friendly, inclusive brigade”. “Everyone knows each other, we all become an extensive of one another’s families,” he said. He said CFA was a great opportunity to learn new skills, develop confidence and give back to the community. While people may be nervous putting their hand up for the job, the proud captain said he was never one to pass judgement on someone walking through the doors for the first time. “I’ve seen my people grow from shy kids to confident men and women. The opportunities you have, you wouldn’t get in other organisations and groups, and it makes you a better person for it,” Mr Smith said. “I sit back smile, and think ‘geez, we’ve got some great people coming through’.” Upper Ferntree Gully Fire Brigade volunteers will be required to undergo a health check, and after the initial training, commit to a minimum of six hours a week of regular training, on Tuesdays and Sundays, along with turnouts. If you are interested in finding out more, phone Peter Smith on 0438 330 361.

Veteran top senior “We don’t always publicise everything we do. A lot of people like to keep it private. But it’s not a handout in our eyes, we’ve got a duty to give each other a hand,” Mr Boness said. During his time as RSL president, Mr Boness has actively sought to engage local youth groups, including Scouts and the Birmingham Primary School. There also has been a push to involve the community as much as possible, with as many as nine community groups regularly using the RSL. This is in addition to the traditional role of the RSL, which has seen initiatives such as installing a memorial at Lilydale Lake, a storyboard at Coldstream; and the RSL’s work in assisting the development of the Seville War Memorial. Mr Boness said he was humbled over the award. “It came out of the blue. I never saw this coming. It’s not just my award, but also for the RSL committee, who’ve supported me and supported many great ideas.” Mt Evelyn RSL Secretary, Anthony McAleer, said it was just reward for some incredible work. “Roger has really turned the club and hall into a community asset, where it’s not locked away from the community, but is part of it,” he said. “He’s very dedicated to the welfare of RSL members and the community. “He had noticed many people in the community were locking themselves away in their homes, so he set this up (the afternoon teas) to help them get out there and mixing with people. “He’s also great at communicating with youth, as well as dedicated to heritage in the area.” The Victorian Senior of the Year Awards took place during the Victorian Seniors Festival, which returned for its 35th year and saw more than 1500 free or low-cost events take place across the state. *If anyone would like to join in the free afternoon tea sessions, simply head down to the RSL around 1.30pm on a Thursday and join in. You don’t need to be an RSL member.

A humble Roger Boness received due recognition on Tuesday 10 October as he accepted the Veteran Community Award at the Victorian Senior of the Year Awards at Melbourne’s Government House. Designed to acknowledge those who make invaluable contributions to the state, the award pays tribute to the Mount Evelyn RSL president’s volunteer work for veterans and their well-being. Minister for Housing, Disability and Ageing, Martin Foley, was among the dignitaries at Government House to present the award to Mr Boness, with Mr Foley saying it was important to recognise the often behind-the-scenes work of many Victorians. Mr Boness, 71, was conscripted for National Service in 1966 and saw active service in Vietnam. Since 2011, he has been deeply involved with the Mount Evelyn RSL, playing an integral role in transforming the RSL into a truly community-based organisation. When he took on the role, Mr Boness said much change needed to happen. “It was while I was at the Mount Evelyn Football Netball Club that I first heard the concept of the community club,” Mr Boness said. “I thought ‘what a great idea’ and we applied it to the RSL. We turned around and asked the community, ‘What can we do for you?’ “Our major role is welfare and there are many ways that is achieved. It’s about ensuring the welfare of our members, many of whom are senior citizens.” Among the many initiatives Mr Boness has helped to implement has been the regular Thursday afternoon tea at the RSL. Along with a free afternoon tea, they also host activities such as carpet bowls and snooker. “It’s just providing an opportunity to get out of the house, for those who may not get much social interaction,” he said. “We’ve also arranged excursions and trips to places such as the Athenaeum Theatre.” Mr Boness has also gone above and beyond in lending a hand when required, only too happy to help the community with more personal issues when required.

This senior can powerlift By Peter Douglas Monbulk senior powerlifter Robert Frost is preparing to display his lifting prowess on a national stage. Frost, 68, is heading off to Tasmania to compete in his second Masters Games, where he will compete in his weight classification while trying to break some personal bests. After rediscovering a love for the gym in his senior years, Frost competed at the Masters Games in Adelaide in 2015, where he won a medal for his age category. This time around, he has been training hard at Monbulk Aquatic Centre, where he has gained much support in spreading the word about the benefits of regular exercise. “I’ve received great backing from the staff at the gym and regular trainers. They’ve been fantastic,” he said. “I encourage all other senior citizens to try some kind of weight training. It’s great for your health, particularly bone strength and digestion. “Lifting keeps you disciplined. You care about when and what you eat, when you sleep. You just feel sharper, fitter all round.” Frost, who also volunteers as a school crossing supervisor, said many people would not realise there were social benefits to hitting the gym. “It’s also very social, particularly meeting and staying engaged with young people. I’ve met many great people through going to the gym,” he said. Frost, who weight 66kgs, will compete against others in his division up to 72kgs. His goals at the Masters Games are to bench press 55kg (his PB is 50kg), complete a 100kg squat (PB is 90kg) and a deadlift of 130kg. In preparation for the event, Frost is focusing on perfecting his technique, rather than just lifting heavy weights. He is also regularly walking throughout the hills region. At the 2017 Australian Masters Games, more than 6000 participants will compete in over 40 different sports.
At 68 Robert Frost is travelling to Tasmania to take part in his second Masters Games. 173785

Rushes on the rise
You got to slow that Mustang down On Sunday 15 October at 2pm, a Mustang lost control on Mountain Highway and crashed into a tree that was down an embankment. Police said that the driver lost control around a corner located below Inverness Road, and as a result drove over the embankment, severely damaging the new car. The car was only three days old and was written off. Sergeant Andrew Herdman said that driver error with a high powered vehicle played a part in the incident.

Peter Quinn lost 22 sheep in a recent dog attack in The Patch in September. In August, two dogs of Husky appearance were also reported loose in Cockatoo by police. A police report on Cardinia Eyewatch stated that dogs entered a property on Boronia Crescent, where they then attacked a ‘victim’s goat before turning on the victim’. Local veterinary clinics around the
Yarra Ranges also share similar stories of livestock being attacked by dogs. Ruth Elliot a dog behaviour specialist in Ferntree Gully said it was always the responsibliy of the owner to keep them in their own property. “You have a legal responsibility to keep your dog on your property,“ she said.
If anyone witnesses a dog attack, they are encouraged to contact the council on 300 368 333 or if necessary, the police on triple-zero. Information that can help authorities identify an offending dog includes breed, hair colour, height and coat length.
Engage to finalise upgrade: Merlino By Peter Douglas MONBULK MP James Merlino has urged the Montrose community to keep working with VicRoads over the Canterbury Road upgrade, as the stakeholders continue to finalise a proposal. Mr Merlino’s comments came after community leaders met at Montrose CFA Station late last month to discuss concerns over the present proposal, which includes introducing a third outbound lane, in addition to replacing the roundabout with traffic lights. Montrose CFA fears the new land will come at the cost of much of its car parking availability for its more than 60 volunteers, as well as raising questions about the accessibility of the site. While many acknowledge an upgrade needs to occur, fears also relate to the safety of students from a nearby
school, the potential loss of trees, as well as a lack of consultation and upgrade options. Mr Merlino said the community needed to stay engaged. “This is a Federal Government project being delivered by VicRoads. We understand VicRoads have been working with the local community to see any concerns they have addressed, and it is our expectation that that continues,” he said. Mr Merlino noted that VicRoads developed a draft design for the traffic signals after initial-discussion input from key stakeholders, including Yarra Ranges Shire, Public Transport Victoria, CFA and the Montrose Township Group. He cited that VicRoads had met with the Montrose Township Group in June this year, which included representa-
tives from the CFA and Yarra Ranges Council. Also, that VicRoads has met with the shire on many occasions. Mr Merlino added VicRoads had met with residents on the west side of the intersection, as well as door-knocked all traders in the area. Meanwhile, those present at the Montrose CFA meeting included Victorian Opposition Leader Matthew Guy, Member for Eastern Victoria Ed O’Donohue, Monbulk candidate John Schurink and Montrose CFA Captain Rob Waters. Mr Guy and Mr O’Donohue said Mr Merlino should be doing more to ensure an appropriate outcome for the community. On the VicRoads website, VicRoads encourages inquiries to canterburyroadupgrade@roads.vic.gov.au.
On 26 October at 2pm, a liquor licence meeting will be held at Olinda CFA. The meeting is to help business owners understand the changes to legislation surrounding liquor laws. Sergeant Andrew Herdman of Olinda police station said the meeting would aim to discuss and highlight new legislation regarding liquor licensing, and invited all current business owners with liquor licences to come along. “The meeting is open to all liquor licence holders, including sporting groups within the townships of Dandenong Ranges,” Sgt Herdman said. The meeting will take place at 547 Mt Dandenong Tourist Road, Olinda, and is open only to those who already have liquor licences. To RSVP, contact Sergeant Andrew Herdman at Olinda police on 9751 1241.
Burglary, theft of Pajero Between 5am and 6am on Sunday 15 October, a man entered a residential house on The Crescent, Mount Evelyn, stealing phones, a wallet and keys to a brown 2013 Mitsubishi Pajero, bearing registration ZYA019. The vehicle was stolen from the driveway and has not yet been located. Anyone with information is urged to contact Yarra Ranges CIU on 9739 2401.
Man charged over graffiti On Sunday 8 October, the Monbulk netball pavilion was graffitied. On Fiday 13 October, Monbulk police arrested a 24-year-old from The Patch who was interviewed at Monbulk police station. The offender was charged on summons at a later date.

YARRA Ranges Council has revealed that so far for 2017 there have been 150 dog attacks in the Yarra Ranges municipality, which is down from 167 for the 2016 period. Though, so far for the year, there have been 87 rushes reported in the Yarra Ranges, in comparison to 76 in 2016. “Rush at“ means the dog has approached a person within three metres in a menacing manner; this includes displaying aggressive behaviour such as snarling, growling and raising the hackles. Council director of Corporate Services Troy Edwards said that many of the dogs, which were identified, were euthanised following the incident. “Once the attack has been reported to council, it is council’s responsibility to investigate the matter,” he said. “A number of dogs have been euthanised voluntarily by their owner this year as the result of an attack.” On the Yarra Ranges Council website, it states that 97 per cent of prosecutions are for dog attacks on people or animals. In September, a dog attack on sheep in The Patch saw 22 killed. The owner, Peter Quinn, said Rangers who responded to the scene identified it as one of the worst they had seen in the Dandenong Ranges. Mr Quinn said it was likely that the dogs were domesticated as they had not returned the following night, and in his 20 years of living there, he had never seen or heard of wild dogs. “The rangers said it was one of the worst he had ever seen,” Mr Quinn said. “Been here on 20 years - never seen anything like that ... a lot of the property is bush, and I’ve never seen stray dogs here.”

Putting puss on the record We’re concerned. Too many cats come through our shelter that have been well cared for, they have clearly been loved, but they have zero identification. We want everyone to recognise the importance of microchipping and registering their cats. In the outer eastern suburbs there is a staggering difference between the percentage of dogs that are microchipped and registered (90 per cent) and the percentage of cats (40 per cent). But it’s hard to be sure exactly why this is the case. Cats are independent creatures. This tendency helps cement the belief that our feline companions are able to fend for themselves. We don’t fret if they are out and about or don’t come home for a couple of days; yet we lose our minds if our dog

A lack of knowledge regarding the microchipping and registration process may also contribute to the problem. The data associated with your pet’s microchip, and registration is managed completely separately. This means when you change your phone number, move house or change animal ownership you will need to adjust both with the local council and the microchipping organisation. Adjusting your details on only their registration, or microchip is not adequate - one database does not impact the other. Kuznetsov has helped many families, flying over 1007 hours to enable patients with a variety of medical conditions attend treatments and return home the same day. Usually, it would take them several days to Melbourne and back from rural and regional towns. Kuznetsov says that his patients are grateful for the services they provide. He said access to medical specialists from rural areas was really difficult. “The patients are really good and grateful for the services we provide. They’re really thankful.” Angel Flights Australia is a charity which co-ordinates non-emergency flights to assist country people access specialist medical treatment. All of the Angel Flights pilots are volunteers who give up their time and the use of the plane to provide free transport to country people who need

Airline Flights Australia CEO Marjarie Pagani says that both volunteers and patients gain great benefits from the flights. “A lot of pilots like to volunteer because it gives them a chance to go out flying,” she said. “The assistance from our volunteers has also made lives so much better while they’re going through medical journeys.” Ms Pagani says that there is a process for passengers to book their flights. “The passenger goes to their doctor and the doctor goes to our website, registers and we send them the paperwork to request a flight,” she said. “Once we have received that request, we put it on our notice board and wait for pilots to have a chance to volunteer.” To request a flight with Angel Flight, visit www.angelflight.org.au or telephone Angel Fight Australia on 1300726567.

Dog show a close comp Canines of all kinds came together over the weekend to take part in the annual St Paul’s Primary dog show in Monbulk. From silky terrier to labradors and dachshunds, all the pooches were prepped and preened and putting on their best puppy dog faces. But it was a close competition, and judges from Mount Evelyn Vet Clinic, Dr Sheree Zirafi and Alison Mealor said it was difficult to choose a winner from all the fabulous competitors. “It’s great, the school community is fabulous and I think it’s great that the school does this,” Alison said. “Definitely looking for the cuteness factor, but it’s also nice to see some training.” That dynamic and cuteness factor was awarded to dog handler Patrick and his dog Polly who took out the ‘Best in Show’ award. Polly is a sky terrier - one of the most endangered dog breeds in the United Kingdom. Lisa Conway organiser for the event said that it was “bigger than last year” and that it was a “really successful” day. “My attitude is that I’m a dog lover and I have kids, so why not bring the two together,” Ms Conway said. “Dogs are quite often shown in the bad light, and I want to show them in a good light after all, they are kid’s best friends, they are adult’s best friends, and they are loyal.” There were certainly only ‘good boys’ at the dog show, with many taking on the jumps course and setting splitting times. Principal Michael Watt said the event brought together the entire community and not just those involved with the school. “Lisa and Ashley have done an amazing job; we have people here from not just the school but also the community, it’s a great event and there are some beautiful dogs here,” Mr Watt said.
The annual Monbulk Dog Show mixed children with dogs, and principal Michael Watt said it was a fantastic success.
Lily and Jack Russell Indigo took out second place in 11-14-year-old handlers.

MAC is holding the second information night, targeted for under 30s. Speaking on the night will be Shane Kelton, a beyondblue ambassador and personal trainer; Chenai Mupotsa, Community Engagement Officer from Headspace and Dr James Collard, clinical psychologist from Narre Warren. This free evening will be held at MAC from 7pm until 9pm, and is open to everyone, however more relevant for under 30s. Bookings are essential; speak to Amanda on 9756 6227.
Some splitting times were set on the dog agility course.
Protest over plight of refugees The local chapter of Grandmothers Against Detention of Refugee Children (GADRC) on 11 October held a protest against refugee detention policies, outside the office of La Trobe MP Jason Wood. The Grandmothers La Trobe members listened to the issues that were to be raised during a meeting with MP Wood and were read poems that had been written by refugees.
Grandmothers and FROGS, (Friends of Grandmothers), while holding placards and banners, then walked through Berwick streets singing in procession. Grandmothers, Irene Day and Virginia Schneiders, met with Mr Wood, at his office, and expressed that support for the ending detention policies had gained momentum, locally, nationally and internationally.

Police believe that a crash at Strawberry Corner along Belgrave-Gembrook Road, between Avonsleigh and Cockatoo may have been caused by environmental factors. On 12 October, around 5pm a ute carrying a trailer with a scissorlift on it collided with a van travelling in the opposite direction, and Emerald Police sergeant David Calkin described the crash as a “head-on collision”. “Somehow, whether by mechanical failure or environmental such as the camber of the road, the trailer has broken away from the vehicle towing it and collided with a van that was Cockatoo bound,” Sgt Calkin said. “On that bend there is a quite a strong camber but once you go over the white line on the side, there is an extreme camber which may have upset the trailer.” The driver of the van, a male in his seventies was taken to Dandenong Hospital for chest and shoulder injuries. The crash comes months after a fatality on the same stretch of road, and calls have been made from local community members in Cockatoo to construct barriers. In August Gerald Shaddock, spokesman for the Cockatoo Road Action Group (CRAG21), said that parts of Belgrave-Gembrook Road had steep inclines and no barriers to prevent drivers from going over the edge. If no action was taken, there would continue to be accidents along the road, Mr Shaddock said, a message which Sgt Calkin also echoed. “It will just keep happening,” Sgt Calkin said. “This section of the Belgrave-Gembrook Road is quite heavily trafficked and has a poor safety history,” Mr Shaddock said. Though evidence suggests attributing the recent crash to the camber of the road, Sgt Calkin reiterated that it was a dangerous section of road and that road users needed to drive to the conditions. He also noted that in the Dandenong Ranges, after periods of rain the roads could become slick due to the residue from gumtrees. “Police have checked the towing weight, all within tolerances ... there’s nothing to indicate the driver has broken the law,” Sgt Calkin said. “This time of the year we have dry periods and then occasional rain which makes the road conditions very slippery ... you have to drive to the conditions and the speed limit is the maximum speed you have to do.”

And combined with their own machinery, Michael and the team have years of experience in order to complete every and any job. “My experience ranges over the past 22 years,” Michael explained. “I started as an apprentice and went from there into domestic work in housing before moving through to the commercial and earth moving industry.” “Being involved in so many areas has given me many opportunities for clients such as the National Australia Bank, the Commonwealth Bank, the ANZ Bank, Lendlease international property and infrastructure group, local councils, insurance work, Telstra and many more. These clients and experiences have made Woody’s Builders very versatile.” For more information about Woody’s Builders or to request a quote, phone Michael on 0419 130 613.

ART DECO JEWEL THE iconic property ‘Moonya’ is a place of beauty and tranquillity - a part of the historic Emerald Country Club Estate that dates back to the 1930s and forms an integral part of the heritage of our area. Purportedly designed by famed architect Harry Norris, and situated in one of Emerald’s most exclusive locations, this Art Deco home is surrounded by a botanical oasis of five stunning acres of established gardens including azaleas, rhododendrons, camellias, Japanese maples, tall tree ferns and a variety of leafy canopy trees creating the most picturesque of settings. Signature Art Deco architecture combines with modern luxuries to create a home of style, grace and functionality. Expansive double glazed windows and high ceilings offer a lightfilled environment and allow garden views from every angle while parquetry flooring, ornate plasterwork and rich tones add quality and warmth. Designed to fit with both family living and entertaining on a grand scale, the upstairs has both formal and informal areas with living room with open fireplace, dining room adjoining the Caesarstone kitchen, family room that has floor to ceiling windows and is heated throughout with hydronic heaters.
The master suite is serviced by a luxurious two-way bathroom complete with spa bath and all bedrooms have quality fully fitted robes. There are four additional bedrooms, one upstairs and the remainder downstairs as well as a sitting/reading area ideal for quiet contemplation. Two sealed driveways provide abundant access and a double garage and carport will house your vehicles or ‘toys’. The romantic setting is worthy of the pages of a magazine and features two trout-stocked lakes with lily pads that are reminiscent of a Monet painting and also has a waterfall and walking trails. Settle back on the terrace with a glass of the best and take in the sights and sounds of an abundance of colourful native birds while basking in the magical surrounds. Just 45 minutes from Melbourne CBD, there are buses to St Margarets, Haileybury College, Beaconhills and a variety of other highly regarded private and public schools, you can walk to the Emerald Country Resort or a short drive will have you in central Emerald.

Nunsense begins when 52 of The Little Sisters of Hoboken have been accidentally poisoned by a vichyssoise prepared by their cook, Sister Julia, Child of God, who, as we learn later on, has an unorthodox taste when it comes to recipes. The order had enough money to bury 48 of the sisters but now needs to raise more to bury the remaining four, who are being kept in the freezer - the reverend mother spending money on buy-
ing a plasma TV, instead of burying the last four dead nuns. And so, we meet the five survivors. Led by The Reverend Mother Sister Mary, the Sisters Mary Hubert, the mistress of novices; Robert Anne, a streetwise nun from Brooklyn, Mary Leo, a novice who is a wannabe ballerina; and the delightfully wacky Mary Amnesia, the nun who lost her memory when a crucifix fell on her head, endeavour to raise money to bury the others through a fund-raiser. Director Trish Carr spoke to The Mail about the musical and could not help but laugh upon retelling the premise. “It makes me laugh every time I think about it,” she said. “It’s a very, very funny show ... lots of inter-
esting and unexpected things will happen and it might just surprise the audiences a little bit.” “It’s mayhem, but very funny.” The musical will interact with the audience as the sisters decide to raise money by putting on a variety show, which Trish said was performed to the audience. “It’s a musical, but it’s the kind of musical that’s a musical as a play ... because of the comedy and storytelling it works really well and the audience who come to the show become the audience of the fund-raiser.” “There’s no fourth wall,” she said. Nunsense will play at the 1812 theatre from 16 November to 9 December. To buy tickets go to http://www.1812theatre.com.au/whats-on/the2017-season/nunsense/
On McLeod nine it’s fine By Peter Douglas Quintessential rock chick and Superjesus frontwoman Sarah McLeod is set to impress local audiences. With a fistful of new material to unleash, fresh from the release of her new album Rocky’s Diner, McLeod will deliver her revamped solo show at the Sooki Lounge on Thursday 26 October. McLeod has re-established herself as one of the hardest-working musicians in the caper, through a heavy touring schedule and a release of new music in August this year. This is in addition to her widely acknowledged, award-winning work with Superjesus. Though, McLeod told the ‘Mail’ she had approached this recent solo release in a completely different manner. “I headed to New York for three months and devoted all my time to writing music,” she said. “I wanted to go somewhere cold. If it’s warm outside, I’m like a little kid. I want to go outside and play with all the other boys and girls. “In New York, I spent up to 16 hours a day writing music.” McLeod said it didn’t take too long for Rocky’s Diner to take shape. “The first two songs I scrapped, but in the third Rocky’s Diner started to show itself and went from there. “The album is about the day-to-day, the mundane which can mean so much to people. It doesn’t matter who you are, or how much you have, it’s about how you feel inside that counts.” McLeod recently released a single and clip, Wild Hearts, from the album. She said local crowds and loyal followers would notice a marked change in her show, although she’s only too happy to pull out some classics if the crowd so desires. Interestingly, she has adapted one of her guitars so it essentially transforms from an acoustic into a bass guitar. “I played around with a few guitars before this one, so I could get it right. Basically it has two jacks, with the second only picking up the bass strings,” she said. “Sonically, the show sounds great and hopefully the crowd at Sooki will love it.” Tickets available from www.sarahmcleod.oztix.com.au For more details, head to www.sookilounge. com.au
Nunsense begins when the Little Sisters of Hoboken discover that their cook, Sister Julia, Child of God, has accidentally poisoned 52 of the sisters, and they are in dire need of funds for the burials.
MOVIES Death was never this fun Happy Death Day (M) Starring: Jessica Rothe, Israel Broussard Playing like a slasher movie version of Groundhog Day, Happy Death Day is a highly entertaining and very well-structured horror-comedy movie. Theresa ‘Tree’ Gelbman (Jessica Rothe), a conceited college student, finds herself stuck in a time-loop on her birthday, wherein she is repeatedly murdered by an unknown assailant, only to wake up alive on the same morning. Rothe delivers a powerful central performance, conveying sassy wit, driven tenacity and an affecting melancholy deep beneath. It’s gratifying to watch
Tree, who is initially quite an unlikeable protagonist, use the constant repeats of her day to examine her troubled life and steadily become a better person.
The tense, cohesive plot contains several motifs that are established early on and culminate in satisfying ways, and even has some well-executed red-herrings. The film and Tree herself both have ample fun with the freedom in her ever-repeating day, but the severity of her situation is always clear, emphasised through disturbing death scenes and a clever ticking-clock element, wherein Tree becomes weaker with every death and ‘resurrection’. Scary, poignant and amusing, Happy Death Day is a fun diversion to bring in the Halloween season. – Seth Hynes

Bumper crowds at field days event Crowds turned out in droves, amid stunning spring weather, for the 2017 edition of the Wandin Silvan Field Days over the weekend of 13-14 October. Living up to its status as the premier farm machinery field days event in the region, the day featured a host of fantastic exhibitions for patrons to explore. Exhibitors came from far and wide, including from interstate, to show off their wares. Mail photographer Greg Carrick was on hand to capture some of the action.

A perfect day for it It was a day of the willow in Round 2 of Ferntree Gully District Cricket Association action, with numerous individual scores with the bat going a long way to setting up victories. Peter Dunlop would be the unluckiest of the lot in Upper Ferntree Gully’s win over Johnson Park. Dunlop ended his innings on 99 not out in the Kings’ innings of 6/225, with the visitors accounting for the Sharks during the run chase. Andrew Devenish provided a strong intent, notching 106 to set the target at 8/222 - Jay Collee with four wickets keeping a hold on the points. Knox Gardens is on the board for the season following a strong showing against The Basin. Batting first, Knox Gardens reached 6/233 on the back of skipper Jarrod Butcher’s 87.
Ben Carnell was the pick of the bowlers for the bears, claiming 3/41. Blake Walter (57) and Scott Vozzo (50) continued their early form during the run-chase, with half-centuries; however, Adam ‘Crystal’ Metherall with 3/32 managed to see the visitors fall short with 9/208. Knoxfield sent a warning to the competition following a commanding team result against Mountain Gate. Matt Train was the pick of the bats with 48 not out in the Knights’ total of 8/276. Tom Boxell and Trent Schofield both fresh from guest stints on The Local Cricket Show on Eastern 98.1FM that morning - had just as good a performance with 43 each. In reply, Trent Fitzgerald provided resistance with 37; however, wickets to Zac Wilson (4/19) and Jack Tay-
lor (3/30) heavily restricted the Gator batsmen to 135. Eildon Park proved too good for Upwey at Upwey Reserve. The Panthers worked hard over the innings to 6/210, Cody Morris again with a solid haul of runs with 97. In reply, Cameron Wheeler was the shining light for Upwey, this time with the bat as he knocked up 90 runs during Upwey’s total of 182. In the final match of Round 2, in Norm Reeves Shield, Ferntree Gully continued on their roll with a win over Belgrave. Sending the visiting team in first at Wally Tew Reserve, Aaron Brunner scored his first half-century for the Magpies, well supported also by Ibrahim Jiva with 44 as Belgrave scored 6/182 in their allotment. A shaky start to the run chase with
skipper Mark Teofilo dismissed with the score at 1/0, however, Jayden Bradbury showed class for a well-made 62 and, along with Harrison Brown’s 47, the batsmen were able to successfully guide past the target, finishing at 7/186. In Decoite Shield, a tipped final preview between Monbulk and Rowville provided a win for the Hawks. Jason Fraser (91no) and Brodie Emmett (84no) gave the Rowville fielders plenty of headaches on their way to 3/208, accounting for Rowville’s 7/207 - Louis Holmes again in the scoresheets with 71, with Alex Walker providing 49no. Craig Broekhof proved the dasher of dreams, claiming 3/54. Lysterfield made light work of Knoxfield, with Nathan Hicks the main culprit at Carrington Reserve for the Beavers.
Hicks ended the day on 75no, easily the majority of Lysterfield’s 0/100 as they chased the Knights total of 96. Nick Bogar had a solid day with both bat and ball for Ferntree Gully Footballers in their win over South Belgrave. The club president produced 64no in the Griffins total of 7/148, then claiming 3/28 in overcoming South Belgrave’s 143. For South, Mark Baker provided a sound innings with 59. Olinda is on the board for the season following victory against St Johns Tecoma. Matthew Oates (4/33) and Peter Dean (3/20) stared with the ball as the Saints got to 173. Olinda, on the back of Dominic Woodfield’s 75, proved too much with 8/187 to claim the six points.
Great start to season for the Hawks MONBULK CRICKET Another great weekend of weather and results for the mighty Monbulk Hawks. After two rounds, the firsts, thirds, fourths, and Under 16s are all undefeated. The Under 12s and Under 13s also played their first match for the season.

Nail-biting wins for bowlers
Hurdlers hit heights By Jamie Strudley YARRA RANGES ATHLETICS The athletes enjoyed some fantastic weather over the weekend, with school back and footy finished. Only thing left to do is athletics! An amazing turnout of future Olympians at Yarra Ranges Athletics Saturday morning's Little Athletics round. They even needed two heats of the little kids' race ... awesome! Well done to everyone who had a go at the various events on offer, great to see so many budding hurdlers showing some outstanding early season form. Don’t forget to confirm your availability for relay events coming up. The seniors competed in Round 2 of AV Shield, with club athletes competing at Werribee and Frankston.
Well done to all who competed and the fantastic performances. Check out the website for results to see if we had more club records broken. Can we have more than the 10 records from last weekend? Next weekend our seniors compete at Nunawading and Meadow Glen while our Little Athletics Athletes enjoy the comfort of competing on our home track at Mount Evelyn. Please remember that Little Athletics starts at 9am sharp with warm-ups from 8.45am. Please get there early to help with set-up. Check timetables during the week to see what events are early starts. For results, news, photos and more, visit www.yarrarangesathletics.org.au or check out the Facebook page.

Omega Automotive Services Centre has been operating in Upwey for 12 years, following 17 years at Wandin North. Business owner David Clark has 30 years’ experience in the automotive industry. Not only is he a qualified motor mechanic, but also a highly qualified automatic transmission specialist. David is a member of the VACC Automotive Transmission Specialist committee, so he receives up-to-date information. Due to the industry changing rapidly, David and his staff attend frequent seminars to keep their training at the absolute peak. They also have the latest workshop equipment to communicate with all modern vehicles. “Most people think having your vehicle serviced includes an automatic transmission service,” David said. “Unfortunately, this is not the case. “Just like you service your engine every six months or 10,000 kilometres, your automatic transmission should be serviced every 12 months or 20,000 kilometres, whichever occurs first.” A transmission service involves replenishing the oil and filter, just like your engine. “As the sump is removed, this generally enables us to recognise a problem before it becomes serious or costly,” David said. “You will prolong the life of your transmission, improve vehicle reliability and save money in the future. “Need a little more motivation? Ask us how much it would cost for a complete transmission rebuild - you might be shocked.” Omega not only provides service for the local community, it also supplies reconditioned automatic and manual transmissions to the trade. Omega Automotive Services Centre is at 76 Main Street, Upwey. Call David and Lisa Clark on 9754 7533.
