Death Bill ‘No’ The assisted dying Bill to be put forward to the Victorian Upper House has failed to win any support from Yarra Ranges’ state politicians. While the move to legalise assisted dying for the terminally ill did win some support among the local MPs, they all viewed the legislation as being significantly flawed. Monbulk MP and Victorian Deputy Leader James Merlino was among the most passionate critics of the Bill, with his views going against many in his party, including Victorian Leader Daniel Andrews. Tensions were so high with his stance that Health Minister Jill Hennessy inadvertently sent Mr Merlino an expletive-laden text message. Mr Merlino voted against the Bill on Friday 20 October, as did Evelyn MP Christine Fyffe, Eildon MP Cindy McLeish and Gembrook MP Brad Battin. Nevertheless, the Bill passed the lower house 47 votes to 37. While early reports suggested the Bill could pass the upper house, there are more recent suggestions the path could be far from easy. During the debate, Mr Merlino put forward five amendments to the Bill, all of which were defeated. Those included measures to address inequality over best practice palliative care, uncertainties about the substances to be used, the risk of doctor-shopping and inadequate safeguards. “This parliament is contemplating ... state-sanctioned suicide, forever changing the doctor-patient relationship,” Mr Merlino told parliament. “The legislation provides for assisted suicide at a 12-month prognosis, not the six months provided for in Oregon. “Ours is not the most conservative model. We have all heard stories about people surviving well past a 12-month prognosis. We all know those stories. Doctors can get it wrong.” Eildon MP, Cindy McLeish, who also addressed parliament, told the

Mail she agreed with the sentiments of Mr Merlino’s arguments and wanted further review of the Bill. Ms McLeish introduced two of her own amendments. Firstly, this included the reduction of access from a 12-month prognosis to six months. Secondly, ineligibility if the person is suffering from a treatable mental illness. This includes the requirement of a referral by an assessing practitioner to a specialist determination of a treatable mental illness (e.g. depression) if the assessor is unable to determine this for themselves. Ms McLeish said: “Although relatively simple, the amendments require a number of consequential amendments throughout the Bill”. Evelyn MP Christine Fyffe said she would not support the Bill, with her major concerns surrounding the drugs to be used. “I’ve got concerns about the cocktail of drugs to be used, there’ve been reports of people vomiting up the drug and not ingesting it all. Also, if the person doesn’t use the drugs and they’re kept on premises - what happens then?” she said. “There’s also been no conversation with the Federal Government about who will pay for these drugs.” Gembrook MP Brad Battin also has an issue with the proposed drugs. Mr Battin doesn’t want to see a new drug enter the market, but wants to consider an option of following the lead of other countries. However, Premier Andrews backed the bill confidently, saying it was long overdue in Victoria. “This (assisted dying) is happening, quietly and violently, in our suburbs and towns. Every year, 50 people experiencing an irreversible deterioration in physical health are resorting to ... the ‘final cry of human desperation’,” Mr Andrews told Parliament. “Fifty people a year are vanishing in lonely, desperate and unspeakable ways - 50 people who the coroner says have made an ‘absolute clear decision’ that no reasonable offer to support or relief could possibly temper.”

Nature comes back to the fore It’s been four years since 500 towering pine trees were removed from the Richards Reserve in Montrose. Now, possums, echidnas and many other various feathered friends are returning to the reserve to call it their home. Read the full story on page 3.

An eye on disaster By Peter Douglas It can become easy to be complacent about preparing for natural disasters. But the local Macclesfield Disaster Recovery Committee (MDRG) has got it covered. The group’s efforts in ensuring its community is as prepared as possible have won them a Highly Commended Award in the Community category of the Victorian 2017 Resilient Australia Awards. Now in its 18th year, the awards program recognises and promotes initiatives that strengthen community disaster resilience nationally. MDRG is made up of a core leadership group of 13 volunteers and a broader membership base of over 50. MDRG co-ordinator Yolanda Slykerman said the award reflected the group’s dedication since beginning in 2013. “We are thrilled to receive this award,” she said. “It’s a great testament to our dedicated group of volunteers and their achievements over the past four years in working to make our community safer, stronger and better-prepared to manage a natural disaster.” The group’s purpose is to manage the needs of the Macclesfield community during the first 72 hours of a serious event, such as bushfire or flood. They also provide a conduit to government and external agencies, should relief and recovery support be required. In addition to developing a detailed procedures manual, Yolanda said they’d raised awareness of the devastating impact that disasters

Grand in the hand for bowls Monbulk MP James Merlino on Thursday 19 October announced the Monbulk Bowling Club would receive $1000 from the first round of the Victorian Government’s Sporting Club Grants Program 2017-’18. Mr Merlino said grassroots sports clubs were the heart and soul of the Monbulk community, noting they brought people together and created happier, united communities. “We’re giving grassroots sports clubs in Monbulk the support they need to grow their ranks and help more people than ever play the sports they love,” he said. “Here in Monbulk, we are proud of our clubs and the vital role they play in bringing together our community.” This grant round saw over 340 clubs successfully apply for funding state-wide. For more information on the Sporting Club Grants program, visit www.sport.vic.gov.au.

Briefly Watch out for snakes Emergency Management Commissioner Craig Lapsley and Parliamentary Secretary for Emergency Services, Harriet Shing, with MDRG representatives Fiona Sewell and Wayne Conroy (centre) at the awards. Picture: DAVID SIMMONDS could have at local level. The group has also built relationships with local and state stakeholders and upskilled members through targeted training. “People like to live in places like Macclesfield for the beauty and serenity but don’t necessarily like to think about the consequences of a disaster,” she said. “However, not to plan for such a scenario would leave our community vulnerable and significantly increase the potential for loss of life and physical assets.” The MDRG meets on the first Tuesday of each month. As the weather starts to warm up, Yarra Ranges pet owners are being warned to be mindful that snakes will be rousing from their winter slumber. The Australian Veterinary Association (AVA) is encouraging animal owners to take precautions to help minimise the risk of snakebites and seek immediate veterinary advice if they suspect their animal has been a victim of a bite. AVA President, Dr Paula Parker, said snakes tended to be most active at the end of the day. “Snakebites often occur in the late afternoon or early evening; however, it’s important for people to be vigilant throughout the day,” she said. Dr Parker said that snakes found in backyards were usually looking for mice or rats to eat. “If you think your animal has been bitten, keep your pet calm and contact your vet immediately. The chances of recovery are much greater if treatment is delivered early,” Dr Parker said. Common signs of snakebite include:

Gut bacteria counts Body

watch Jerome Higgins

Physiotherapist, Dandenong Ranges Physio, Olinda

Twenty years ago, I would have said exercise was much more important than diet for good health. But I would have been wrong. There is much being made of the role the gut, and, more specifically, the mixture of bacteria in the gut, plays in our overall health. One of the least surprising though is the link between food

and mood. Yet did you also know about the link between food and pain? The mixture of bacteria in the gut is called the microbiome, and you can think of it like an ecosystem of organisms all competing for food. If you missed last week’s Catalyst show on the ABC you should check it out on iView, it explains it really well. In a nutshell, our bacterial gut diversity in the Western world is very low compared to our ancestors and other cultures (the Japanese diet is a prime example). Most of us eat way too little fibre, and way too much sugar and bad fats. But in general we also eat a poor

range of food, and all of this can create an imbalance in our microbiome. Not only does this impact on localised gastro-intestinal issues such as irritable bowel syndrome, but it influences many other ‘lifestyle’ diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, obesity and depression. Science has also shown recently that there is a subgroup of bacteria in our gut that helps to fight inflammatory responses in our body, and other bacterial groups who, when their levels are too high, encourage inflammation by attacking our immune system. Inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, asthma and type one diabetes are directly influenced by these latter bacteria, but so is our body’s response to pain.

Functional MRI studies have shown that the brain scans of people with chronic pain have similar patterns to those with depression, meaning that the centres in our brains that deal with mood also deal influence our pain responses. The inference is that our ability to perceive ‘normal pain’ stimulus is greatly influenced by mood, which in turn is greatly influenced by food! Now guess the country with the lowest rate of diagnosed clinical depression in the world, one of the lowest rates of obesity/overweight population (less than half of Australia and the USA), the lowest OECD rate of chronic pain and yet one of the lowest OECD per capita spending on health (combined public/private spend) - Japan!

Real-world social justice in action for college kids By Peter Douglas In a partnership between Mater Christi College and the Food Security Network, Mater Christi College students have been engaged in the realworld application of social justice through the school’s Year 11 and 12 Catholic Action Program. The Food Security Network works with students to maintain garden beds of nutritious vegetables which will assist the provision of meals through the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, a local organisation which relies on the generosity of communities. The vegetables, which are due to be harvested in early November, will be delivered by the students to the centre as a gesture of welcome and solidarity with refugees. “Growing these plants will make a difference to families who are hoping for a healthy and peaceful life,” Year 12 student, Tearnha Porteous said. While fellow student Juliana Begue said; “the smallest things can have the biggest impact in someone’s life”.

Let the creek run free By Derek Schlennstedt Significant erosion at Sassafras Creek caused by stormwater and debris will soon be a thing of the past. Council and Melbourne Water are installing a new stormwater system under the Sassafras Village Green in early 2018. The new system will filter debris and collect stormwater before slowly releasing it into the creek, which will prevent further erosion. Mayor Noel Cliff said the creek was a valuable asset and it was up to council and the State Government to protect it and ensure it remained for future generations. “Council undertook investigations and confirmed that erosion was causing sedimentation of the creek and affecting local fauna and flora,” Cr Cliff said. “Reducing the water volume and flow rate will allow the Dandenong and Sherbrooke amphipod, Dandenong burrowing crayfish and slender tree fern to remain protected.” The Friends of Sassafras Creek raised the issue when they noticed the fast moving stormwater wearing away the creek and forming a deep gully. Friends of Sassafras Creek member Jane Hollands said the ultimate aim was to reduce the flow of water. “It’s causing significant erosion and Sassafras Creek has significant vegetation such as slender tree ferns ... because the water is flowing so fast, it’s not soaking into the ground and the tree ferns are drying out,” she said. “This will significantly reduce the flow of water and speed and hopefully the erosion won’t be as bad.”

Members of The Friends of Sassafras Creek, Jane Hollands, Carol Soloff, Andrew Johnston and Brian Bloomer, and Yarra Ranges Council Mayor Noel Cliff stand above a deep gully near Sassafras Creek caused by erosion. The works will include closing part of the Sassafras Village Green to excavate and install tanks four metres beneath the surface, which will hold

up to 450 kilolitres of stormwater - the equivalent size of two and a half standard household pools. During this time the Black Satur-

day memorial path will be temporarily removed during the works, but will be reinstated with the help of the community on completion.

Students to learn lesson of the feet This October, local primary school students are encouraged to leave the car behind and walk, ride, scoot and skate to school to improve their health and fitness as part of VicHealth’s Walk to School program. Cardinia Shire Mayor, Cr Brett Owen, said there were many benefits to active travel and during October, children could also win some great prizes as part of the annual VicHealth Walk to School program. “Leaving the car at home means there is less traffic congestion around schools, it is better for the environment and it is better for families who get to spend quality time together while improving their health and fitness,” Cr Owen said. For families who live too far to walk the entire distance, there are 19 stop and drop zones in Cardinia Shire. These are designated areas, up to a kilometre away from the school entrance, where parents can drop off and pick up their children, allowing the children to walk, ride, scoot or skate the rest of the way. All children who participate in the walk to school program during October can go into the draw to win prizes from Life of Bikes, either by collecting a raffle ticket at school or by sending in a family selfie to mail@cardinia.vic. gov.au, along with your name, contact details and location of where the picture was taken. Photos may be shared on council’s Facebook page. Students who are unable to actively come to school can still take part by doing other activities during the school day, for example completing laps of the oval or basketball courts. So sustainable James Merlino (right) presents the Emerald Secondary students with the award. 174226

Emerald college shines in action Emerald Secondary College on Wednesday 11 October won a Group Action Award for its innovative, student-led actions to increase understanding of diversity within their school and community. Victorian Minister for Education, James Merlino, presented the award to the students as part of the annual VicSRC Recognition Awards, which recognises students, teachers and schools that demonstrate exceptional leadership in education. The college has developed numerous staged strategies to respond to social in-

clusion and human diversity. These include holding a community information night, Diversity Week activities, wheelchair basketball, blind soccer, a deaf disco and an LGBTIQ 40hour diversity challenge. VicSRC Executive Officer, Nina Laitala, congratulated the school. “Students are positioned in these nominations as partners in education; they are taking action to investigate issues and initiate change,” she said. “As the peak body representing stu-

dents in Victoria, we are thrilled to celebrate best practice in student voice, student-led action and student participation.” They even wrote and published a song, with the support of students from Furlong Park School for the Deaf. They raised more than $10,000 to build an all-access car park and outdoor classroom/amphitheatre. With the $1800 prizemoney, Emerald Secondary College plans to create a sensory garden to continue to promote inclusion and acceptance at their school.

Cardinia Shire Mayor Cr Brett Owen joined local food leaders to launch the inaugural Cardinia Food Forum on Wednesday 18 October. The event is billed as both a celebration and call to action of all wonderful things happing in food and farming shire-wide. Guests shared their ideas and knowledge, with

the aim of ensuring a communityled approach to the local food systems. Among the topics discussed included the importance of a localised economy based on production, and the demand for healthy food. Pictured is Cr Owen with Sustain Australia Chief Executive Officer, Dr Nick Rose.

It's music, so count us in By Derek Schlennstedt Primary school students across the country are busy practising for the Music: Count Us In initiative. Created in 2006 by Music Australia, the Count Us In initiative is celebrating its 11th year and is Australia’s biggest schools program. The program encourages young people to become passionate about music and music education and has students from across the country singing the same song, on the same day. One of the many schools taking part in the initiative will be the Dandenong Ranges' own Upwey Primary School. This is the school's first year taking part in the initiative, though principal Laura Kaddy said music was a big part of the curriculum at Upwey Primary. “In our school music is really important and the kids have an hour lesson each week to participate in music activities and we also run an instrumental program with the Upwey Music Council too,” she said. The students in Grade 2-3 will learn the entire song and then teach the rest of the school before the performance date on 2 November. Ms Kaddy said the students were all excited to come together as a school and perform this year’s song ‘Shine Together,” and that the entire school community would be invited to the performance “Our music teacher is teaching it to the students in her class; with the view that once they're confident with it they'll learn it and they’ll be able to teach it to the rest of the school ... it really empowers them. “We’re going to do a group singing of the song, in a nice spot in the school, and film it and invite parents along to watch,” Ms Kaddy said.

From left: Upwey Primary School students, Dominic, Lila, Gerra and Zak and are excited to take part in the Music: Count Us In initiative. The students said they enjoyed the Music: Count Us In song along with the drumming and percussion which they often partook in. “We do a bit of drumming, it’s fun and exhausting,” they said.

Each year students from all across the country are chosen to write next year’s song. This year’s was written by five student songwriters - Makayla Forbes, Elliena Escott, Marcus Yeo, Tiffany Yeo and Dandenong Ranges'

own Sadie Mustow. Working directly with schools and teachers, Music: Count Us In exists to assist teachers in providing quality music education and to address the gap in specialist music education provision in

many Australian schools. Students from all across Australia will be singing their hearts out in November and the students at Upwey Primary School will be among them.

Night goes down in histor y Projects ranged from Barak to Cathy Freeman. Even Phar Lap was chosen! “The display and projects were the result of a four-week long process which involved a study of the history of the Dandenong Ranges from its use by the Wurundjeri people, to its timber mills, horticulturalists, artists and tourists. We looked at our school using photographs and visits from past students. As well, it included students practising the skills of questioning, researching, planning, observing, writing, drawing, and

using a timeline,” the Grade 2/3 teaching team said. “By including art in the process, our students got an enormous amount of empathy for and understanding of their chosen person.” History allows even very young children to connect with the stories of the past and begin to realise that the stories of their families and themselves form part of something greater and will be remembered and studied in the future. It’s authentic, real learning which is valued by the parent community.

The Patch Primary School held its highly anticipated History Night on Tuesday 17 October. Parents, grandparents and friends at the Grade 2/3 night frequently commented that “I learnt so much I didn’t know about some important Australians.” About 75 students shared their history projects on an important Australian, which they had researched and written. They were also able to share a number of artworks they had created depicting the faces of their chosen subject.

Halloween hits the hills By Derek Schlennstedt For the very first time, Halloween is coming to the hills. So bring the family and join The Dandenong Ranges community to celebrate the Halloween holiday with the first-ever Halloween on the Green event. The inaugural event will be held at Ferny Creek recreation reserve on 28 October and will be a spooky and spectacular celebration of everything Halloween. Organiser Andrew Fillip-Gautier, from the Philanthropic Collective said that as a parent in Sassafras it was difficult to find somewhere where children could celebrate the holiday due to the Dandenong Ranges geography. “It has become evident over the past couple of years that there is no real central gathering point on the mountain to celebrate this occasion,” he said. “We see a lot of pockets of Halloween that break out on the mountain and we see a lot of kids dressed up with nowhere to go.” They might go trick or treating to one place but at the next they’ll be knocked back.” With various isolated areas in the Dandenong Ranges broken up by townships, many children miss out on the opportunity to go trick or treating.

Though the Halloween on the Green ensures everyone gets a chance to dress-up and take part in the spookiest holiday of the year. Offering a mix of dress-up competitions, live music, carnival rides, and all manner of delicious treats, “It’s an event the whole family will enjoy,” Andrew said. “We want to create safe, affordable family-free fun days, where we try and do as many things for free as possible, and really want to create as many happy memories as possible for our kids,” he said. “Hopefully we can build it to become a regular event.” The event is helping to fund-raise for Sherbrooke Community School, Sassafras Primary and Sassafras Preschool with 100 per cent of the funds going to those schools. Among the festivities is also a dunk the pollie and principal event, where students and adults get the chance to dunk the principals of the schools, Fletchers Agents and even Yarra Ranges Shire Mayor Noel Cliff. The event would not have been achieved without the help of local CFA units, Scouts, businesses, the school community, and of course the Ferny Creek Recreation Reserve Committee of Management.

Organiser Andrew Filip-Gautier and Yarra Ranges Council Mayor Noel Cliff are dressed up and ready for the inaugural Halloween on the Green.

Insight into Dame Nellie and her life By Peter Douglas The Yarra Ranges community is getting the chance to gain rare insight into one of its mostloved icons, Dame Nellie Melba. Specifically, the incredible generosity and fund-raising efforts of this internationally renowned export. The Melba Gift Book of Australian Art and Literature exhibition features some of the nation’s most important and well-known artists and authors, and how they helped Dame Nellie Melba create the book. Melba’s Gift Book of Australian Art and Literature formed part of a fund-raising initiative to help the war effort. Published in 1915, the book showcased original works and was a highly successful fund-raising tool. Museum program director for creative communities, Patrick Watt, said many might not know Dame Nellie Melba was recognised widely for her fund-raising efforts, as well as her singing. “All this (the exhibition) came about from a book. To put it in perspective, the book today would be like Kylie Minogue putting together a fundraiser and featuring the work of Tim Flannery, Tim Winton, Paul Kelly and Nick Cave,” he said. “She raised 100,000 pounds, which, in today’s terms, would be around $8 million. “There is plenty at the exhibition for all ages. So if you’re not usually the type to visit an exhibition, this may be the exception. There has been some really positive feedback.” Mr Watt said the exhibition helps to keep alive Dame Nellie Melba’s legacy and offer another perspective on her life. One of the integral themes of the exhibition is the exploration of charity, what it means in wartime and what it means today. Guests will get the opportunity to take part in ‘curator floor talk’, which will enable them to learn more about the exhibition and some of the items. The exhibition includes 15 original artworks from the book, as well as rare pieces form Dame Nellie Melba’s estate. Sculptures and artworks are also a highlight. The Melba Gift Book of Australian Art and Literature exhibition runs until Sunday 4 February. Free event. Yarra Ranges Regional Museum is located at 35-37 Castella Street, Lilydale. The perfect storm hits Geostorm (M) Starring: Gerard Butler, Alexandra Maria Lara, Jim Sturgess Geostorm is a fun throwback to the ’90s style of blockbuster filmmaking, an era defined by archetypal characters, absurd science and earnest, uncomplicated heroism. A global satellite array, nicknamed ‘Dutch Boy’, has been deployed to manipulate the weather and neutralise climate-based natural disasters. When Dutch Boy begins malfunctioning, its disgraced creator Jake Lawson (Gerard Butler) must race against time to fix or disable it before it can unleash a catastrophic worldwide storm. The plot is ridiculous and some of the developments are a little predictable, but Geostorm still generates a strong sense of intrigue and escalating peril. Damning details and cover-ups steadily emerge as the disasters multiply, leading us to wonder who might be behind this crisis. With his trademark gruff charisma, Butler leads an ensemble cast full of chemistry, with the stand-outs being Jim Sturgess as Jake’s tenacious, more level-headed brother Max, and Alexandra Maria Lara as Ute Fassbinder, the graceful, confident leader of the Dutch Boy station. There is also a very poignant subplot involving Jake’s shaky relationship with his daughter Hannah (Talitha Bateman), in which Bateman distinguishes herself as an outstanding young actress. With its scrappy working-class hero, conspiracy undertones and focus on large-scale disasters, Geostorm is a better successor to Independence Day (which Geostorm director Dean Devlin produced in 1996) than last year’s atrocious Independence Day: Resurgence. Geostorm is a moving, well-acted and exciting piece of B-movie cheese. - Seth Hynes

SPRING RACING

A Mail News Advertising Feature

It's a beautiful thing A day at the races - it’s a wonderful thing. A chance to road-test the new frock, polish those cufflinks and soak up the sun, cheering on a winner as the field thunders down the home straight. Squeeze a cheeky breakfast mimosa in there somewhere and it’s a recipe for a perfect weekend. But Yarra Valley Racing isn’t just another day at Flemington or Caulfield. This is country racing with a pinch of glam, which means rural character, proper service, farm-fresh produce, and local wines that’ll have race-goers seriously considering a tree change. And as Yarra Valley Racing’s Jason Taylor explained, Yarra Valley Racing doesn’t do jam-packed crowds, and they don’t do car park gridlock. For them, racing’s better when it’s stress-free, fun and family-friendly. “Spring Racing’s three headline acts are the Cox Plate, the Melbourne Cup and Oaks Day, and we’ll be celebrating each one in style,” Jason said. “We’re talking full local race programs, live music up on stage, free activities for the kids and all the action from Flemington and Moonee Valley streamed live on the big screen.” Saturday 25 October kicks off the spring racing fun with the Cox Plate taking centre state. Partnered with excellent entertainment and some of the Yarra Valley’s best wine, it’s a day not to be missed. “If you’ve been hibernating for the last few months, this is the time to dust off your frock, find the cufflinks and get the gang together for our famous Cox Plate Day,” Jason said.

Yarra Valley Racing doesn’t do jam-packed crowds, and they don t do car park gridlock. For them, racing s better when it s stress-free, fun and family-friendly. “As usual we’ve got a full event lineup, including Fashions on the Field, live music and a big range of dining, marquee and hospitality packages. A track-side work party or a day out with the kids - whatever your style, we’ve got you covered. Flemington may be hosting the main event, but the Yarra Valley Racing Club is celebrating the Melbourne Cup in their own way with ‘the biggest harness meet in the southern hemisphere’ on Tuesday November 7. “It’s still the race that stops the nation,” Jason said. “Except here you can actually find a

decent picnic spot.” Finally, on Thursday November 9, the Yarra Valley Racing Club puts a twist on the traditional Oaks Day, with the event known in the valley as the ‘Pacing Cup.’ “This is Yarra Valley Racing showing off,” Jason said. “The sun’s out, the horses are set, and everybody’s dressed to the absolute nines. The Pacing Cup is one of the club’s biggest annual harness events, and it tends to go off with a bang. “So whatever your track style, you can take it easy: a day at the Yarra Valley Races means you’ve already picked a winner. Everything else is just gravy.”

Cire helps students at risk With over 30 years’ experience, Cire is one of the largest Adult and Community Education (ACE) organisations in Eastern Melbourne and is considered a pioneer of successful education options for young students at risk. Spanning over four sites, Cire runs both VET courses and early childhood education, aiming to ‘support people who want to really live life, whether that’s learning for work, play, school, or just to make life more interesting’. Under the guidance of Tim Broderick from Swinburne University of Technology, Cire Training and seven students from Cire Community School are currently working to rebuild the kitchen garden at the Silvan Primary School. “Silvan Primary School students are engaged in cooking classes each Friday at the school. They are keen to lean about growing food, digging in the garden, picking fresh vegies, smelling and tasting the food they prepare, and sharing the experience with their classmates and helpers,” Cire Services Education and Training Manager Anna-Louise Allen said. “This project will not only provide the Silvan Primary students with pleasurable handson learning about food and good nutrition, but it is also an opportunity for the Cire VCAL students to participate in handson learning with a real sense of

As part of a worldwide Steiner initiative, The Dandenong Ranges Steiner School (DRSS) is introducing its first beehive. As DRSS Business Manager Kylee Grace explained, the aim of the program is to invite schoolchildren to be involved in the caretaking of the bees. The program begins in kindergarten and exists through to class six. “Even in kindergarten it's possible to observe bees with the children - bees working among the blossoms or bee colonies going about their business,” Kylee said. “Children in Kindergarten to Class 3 can witness the harvesting, where the honey, sealed by the bees, is collected, centrifuged, and (very importantly) tasted. These are unforgettable experiences. Observing nature, children can find the inner images they have created. In the classrooms children engage in practical activities with beeswax, and draw pictures of bees and blossoms.” In Class 4 to 6, Kylee explained that the children approached bees with open interest. As spring arrives, it is easy for children to witness nature awakening and the activity of bees. The relationship between insects and blossoms can be observed. This ties in with horticulture and botany classes. As part of geometry studies, children learn to construct hexagons with compass and straight edge, and rediscover these forms in the beehive. “Under the supervision of a beekeeper, children can take a look at the hive‘s storage chamber or the bees'

Imaginations in full bloom A beautiful mosaic marks the entrance of Ghilgai School in Kilsyth. A whole-school community project, every child in the school from Foundation to Class 6 made a mosaic flower for the wall. As Ghilgai educational coordinator assistant Michelle McAulay explains, the flowers are not botanical specimens, but brilliant flowers radiant with the joy of childhood; flowers that have been watered with imagination. Tall flowers shelter smaller ones, little ones sparkle among the tall grasses to make a natural garden where each shines in its own special place. “It is an image of community working together, and represents Ghilgai’s striving to be a sanctuary for childhood,” Michelle said. “The mosaic panel fills the entrance with beauty and the glowing background of yellow warms the space. The dancing flowers uplift the spirits of all who pass through there daily. “Flowers bloom and seed and then new flowers are born, butterflies go through an amazing process of change before they emerge and flutter their

Both these images speak of growth and change and new life possibilities. So, in a way, this flower mosaic wall serves as an emblem for Ghilgai School.” Michelle explained that the work pays homage to Sioux Dollman’s artworks ‘Poppies’ and ‘The Water Wheel steps’ in Warburton. Dollman uses rich colour and her works have an inner rhythm and deep beauty. Sioux Dollman was artist in residence at Ghilgai across 11 consecutive days and her warm vivacious nature inspired all who worked with her - parents, staff and children.

“Even the younger ones were able to participate in the installation - there were many opportunities to help - breaking and sorting tiles, gluing flowers in position, cleaning, grouting and polishing,” Michelle said. “John Keats said ‘a thing of beauty is a joy forever’ and Ghilgai seconds that. The mosaic will shine upon future generations and past students will be able to return and point out to their own children the flower that they made many years ago.” Ghilgai School is located at 295 Liverpool Road in Kilsyth. A magic ton for Buckland FTGDCA Clint Buckland produced a superb century against Belgrave on the opening day of Round 3 to help propel Mountain Gate to a competitive target against Belgrave. Winning the toss and electing to bat, the Gators lost an early wicket then consolidated with Luke Bowyer aiding with 69, before Buckland launched on his way to 103, including eight 4s and two 6s. For the Magpies, Michael Litterbach was the pick of the bowlers with 4/58 as Mountain Gate finished the innings at 7/304 to set an interesting target for the home team next week. Knox Gardens toiled hard with the bat all day in their encounter against

Upper Ferntree Gully. Skipper Jarrod Butcher knocked around with 30; however, Todd Burley finished with figures of 5/45 to keep the Falcons to 164. Starting their innings in the last hours of day one, the Kings will go into next week at 1/14. It was a team batting performance at Upwey with several contributors to the score against Johnson Park. Cameron Wheeler (73) and Jordan Dunstone (71) both scored half centuries as the Tigers spent the day at the crease to finish on 278. For the Sharks, Tom Nash claimed 6/62 to help restrict the target. An interesting state of play at The Basin with Ferntree Gully dismissed

for 144 against The Basin. Ben Carnell (4/14) and Jake Sherriff (4/52) ran riot against the Blues to restrict the total. With a low target to defend, Ferntree Gully made in-roads on setting up an intriguing position at stumps, having claimed 4/98 with next week to play. Knoxfield batted all day with numerous starts in their innings against Eildon Park. Zac Wilson (68), Tom Boxell (58) and Matt Train (50) all made half centuries as the Knights made 295. For the Panthers, Monto Perera lead the attack with 4/88, with Steve Pimm supporting with 3/46. In Decoite Shield, South Belgrave

posted 9/215 in their innings against Lysterfield. Daniel Cormack (59) and Rob Barry (54) were among the runs to set the target for the Beavers, with Adam Kinniburgh staring with the ball with 6/69. Monbulk has already claimed the points against Olinda thanks to a masterclass from Jason Fraser. Olinda was dismissed for 96 - Tim Scott providing resistance with 35 with Fraser claiming 6/21. In response, the Hawks are cruising at 2/104, Shane Cosstick unbeaten on 52 not out. Rowville batted all day against Knoxfield to set a mammoth 6/339, thanks to a Brett Gatehouse century. Gatehouse tallied up 117 across the

day, with Louis Baird’s 79 helping to ensure the Knights were chasing a large target next week. Ferntree Gully Footballers batting line-up was on duty in their encounter with St Johns Tecoma. Nick Bogar provided the goods again with 57, supported by a number of players including Brendan Morris with 50 not out, with the Griffins reaching 8/250 to set the Saints a substantial target. Finally, it can be announced that Saturday’s edition of The Local Cricket Show on Radio Eastern 98.1 FM will feature special guests Jonathon Levell from Belgrave and Peter Dunlop from Upper Ferntree Gully. Join the team on Radio Eastern from 8am on Saturday 28 October.

Six wickets to Jason Fraser - great work! MONBULK CRICKET This weekend saw the commencement of the first two-day matches for most Monbulk cricket teams and the first matches for the club's new Fast 9 and Super 7 teams. The fourths had a bye but all other senior teams are in a commanding position after the first day. Skipper Shane Cosstick took five catches then backed it up with 52 not out. A memorable day in the second XI, with 18-year-old Aaron Gillard making his debut century. He batted the entire 80 overs for 104 not out bringing up a well-deserved ton in the 78th over and helping his team to make 3/300. Junior athletes join in By Jamie Strudley YARRA RANGES ATHLETICS Round 3 of Yarra Ranges Athletics was held on Saturday morning at Morrison Reserve, Mount Evelyn. Light drizzle did not deter the little athletes as they ran, jumped and threw with plenty of smiles and hopes of PBs. Results are available on the LAVIC website or at www.yarrarangesathletics. org.au. The seniors competed in Round 3 of the AV Shield held at Nunawading and Meadow Glen tracks. Most of the athletes were at Nunawading creating a fantastic club atmosphere. Many thanks to Malcolm, James, Kieran, Lucas, Jamie and the many others who shared club-helper duties. Without your help, the club scores zero points. It was also great to welcome some new faces to the team, who all performed exceptionally; well done Ashlinn, Sarah, Oliver and Seamus. Round 4 of little athletics next Saturday has an 8am start for Under 11s-Under 15s javelin; please get there early to help set up and be ready to start on time. All other grades are the normal 8.45am warm-up with competition starting at 9am. Seniors have AV Shield at Knox or Werribee; don’t forget to enter by noon Wednesday. The Spirit of Motorclassica Award was picked up by Queenslander Andrew Torti and his 1924 Lancia Trikappa. Lancia was a feature marque at this year’s event.

In conjunction with Motorclassica, the Mail awarded five lucky readers a double-pass to see this year’s event. The winners expressed their thanks and enjoyment over attending this year’s event.

The keys to adulthood gional areas when it comes to young adults getting their licences,” Mr Prosser said. “In metropolitan areas, younger people are depending less on cars, and are using alternate means of transport such as trains, trams, buses and bikes. “In regional areas, the car is still the most popular mode, however, there are often also fewer alternatives for getting from A to B.” Males are also more likely to hold a driver’s licence than females in the 18 to 24 year range, a statistic which continues in the latest revision of this report, despite the fact that females are catching up with males when it comes to passing their driving test, according to VicRoads. The Licensing Trends Report reveals the importance of RACV’s traditional advocacy work in the roads space, while expanding into new areas of mobility.

A driver’s licence was once the signal of adulthood, but seems to be losing its appeal. Youth in Victoria have recorded an 18 per cent decrease in the average licensing rate for those aged 18 to 24 years. New research by RACV shows that 18-yearolds have the lowest licensing rate in 16 years at 39.6 per cent, down from just over 50 per cent. RACV’s General Manager of Public Policy and Corporate Affairs, Bryce Prosser, said testing was occurring at a later age. However, while there has been a decrease in young drivers obtaining a licence since 2011 in the Greater Melbourne area, there have been increases in rural areas overall, with the exception of regional centres. “What is clear from our research is that there is a great disparity between metropolitan and re-

One of the real ‘head-turners’ of the 2017 Motorclassica Motorshow was media personality David Berthon’s 1913 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost. Berthon’s labor of love took out the Best in Show for the popular car show, held earlier in October. One of just six Silver Ghosts of the same specification remaining in the world, the magnificent London to Edinburgh Torpedo Tourer by Peel of Brisbane was originally built to the same specification as Rolls-Royce’s 1913 Spanish Grand Prix winner. Berthon said it was an “enormous thrill” to have taken out the top prize. “The reaction to the car from the public all weekend has been fantastic, that’s been the thrill for me, and this (the award) is cream on the cake,” he said. The black machine was requisitioned by the British military in World War I, before later being sold to a Sydney doctor, arriving in Australia in 1928. It was used locally, at various times as a funeral mourning car, and even a tow truck, before being abandoned in a Sydney backyard for decades. Rediscovered in 1966 and fitted with its current body, the Best in Show winner was found by Berthon in 2001 and fully restored by Victorian Rolls-Royce specialists, Artisan Coachworks and The Derby Works, over the past 15 years. The Restoration of the Year Award at the Concours d’Elegance went to Terry Smart’s 1970 Mercedes Benz 280SE 3.5 cabriolet, restored jointly by Reinhard Klavers and Associates and Re-Creation Automotive.
