THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT… FEAST OF THE SCREEN Noosa International Film Festival (NIFF) begins today with filmmakers and enthusiasts from around the world converging on Noosa for all things cinematic. Festival president Campbell Corfe said the festival, now in its second year, had built on last year’s success to grow interest in Noosa to become a filmmaker destination. “We’ve had an excellent platform that we’re building on,” he said. “It has an aspiration to create a film industry in Noosa.” The festival is designed in three parts including international films, a series of workshops and the screening of some outstanding feature films including a world first with the release of the Australian thriller Jungle starring Daniel Radcliffe. Felix’s wife Lizzy said the real location for the screening was her mum’s home on Witta Circle, Noosa Heads, and the inspiration came from friends and family who have moved away from the city to a more relaxed lifestyle. “So many of my friends are doing it now, moving up to the Sunshine Coast,” she said. “Rory (Williamson) did the seachange. COVER STORY Leanne Walsh and son Curtis at Our Backyard. Pictures: Dave Gleeson, surfshots.com.au

SPREADING

SUNSHINE BY MARGARET MACCOLL

W

hen Leanne Walsh’s son Curtis was born 13 weeks premature and diagnosed with cerebral palsy and epilepsy it was “heart-breaking, lifechanging and challenging”. Curtis is now a 22-year-old man whose greatest loves in life are music, motorbikes, sport, the Noosa Tigers Australian Football Club and his friends at Sunshine Butterflies. Giving Curtis the life he now enjoys was the driving force behind the establishment of disability support service Sunshine Butterflies of which Leanne is founder and CEO and which currently assists about 500 members and employs 55 people. During Curtis’s pre-school years the family lived in the border town of Albury Wodonga where they could access services from NSW and Victoria. Leanne was very involved in and on the committee of a small educational playgroup, which gave her an insight into setting up such an organisation. On moving to Noosa to be near family when Curtis was about five years old Leanne found it lacked support, respite and information. “I got some families and friends together to create a

board so we could start a not for profit charity and disability service to provide everything I wished I could have accessed when I was a new mum,” she said. Leanne had a very clear vision to create a “one-stop shop” for individuals living with disability and their families to provide information, support, resources and programs from a network of services. “There was no flexibility within the sector,” she said. “I wanted that to change. I wanted to create an organisation that had family values and a real sense of community surrounding it. We have achieved that. As Curtis became older, I could see the gaps in service delivery and saw the need for creative life skills programs. I also discovered that there were so many young people without a service to attend during the week due to not receiving funding when they left school. “Curtis didn’t particularly enjoy school so it was important that he didn’t join a traditional post-school service that lacked flexibility and would only allow him to attend a couple of days due to his funding. I wanted him to enjoy programs and activities that were fun and interesting and mostly I wanted him to be kept busy every day of the week. We made it our mission to make sure everyone out there could come to Sunshine Butterflies.” The day programs started with Curtis and two other

members, whose families agreed to pool their post-school funding so they could all have a five-day program and employ two staff to kick the day program service off. “Our programs gradually increased starting off with swim clubs, support groups and family care support and case management,” Leanne said. “Our growth has been quite rapid with many new programs being offered which increased our membership. “Opportunities to grow have increased with sponsorship and fund-raising opportunities and community support has been overwhelming to help us construct Our Backyard.” Three years ago with $50,000 won in a Dick Smith Foods competition and another $50,000 raised with the help of the community Sunshine Butterflies had the $100,000 deposit they needed to buy a five acre property, Our Backyard, at Cooroibah, where they could achieve their vision. “It is a learning, education and recreational facility, which provides life skills and learning opportunities to people of all ages and abilities,” Leanne said. “Once completed, Our Backyard will allow us to provide existing services as well as many new exciting programs including job creation opportunities and animal enrichment programs for our members and the community.” The programs already operated by Sunshine Butterflies are staggering.

Leanne said while their core business was to assist families when their children go through different life changes and when difficult challenges arise the list of programs continues to grow to meet the needs that arise. “We have two swim clubs at Noosa and Kawana, three family support groups throughout the Sunshine Coast, an early intervention program for the little ones, social clubs, siblings programs, social enterprises, job and business creation, puppet disability education programs, in home and community based respite, post-school programs that include woodwork, art, drama, music, cooking, gardening and farm programs and after-school sport and fitness programs,” she said. “We are lucky to have amazing staff and volunteers who facilitate weekly fitness, yoga and tai-chi sessions for our members to enjoy. We also have a fabulous fortnight of fun held between each term.” The activities and programs at Sunshine Butterflies that Curtis enjoys have given him the confidence and social skills to enjoy a fabulous social life and learn new skills at his own pace. Curtis now oozes confidence and cheekiness. It’s not only Curtis who has benefitted from Sunshine Butterflies. A variety of people use Sunshine Butterflies services, from parents attending a support group or someone accessing the swim club to a school leaver joining a postschool program. Also on offer is a personal fund-raising platform on the organisation’s website where families can reach their fundraising goals to purchase essential items that can’t attract government funding. “We have families all over Australia using our fundraising platform,” Leanne said. “Volunteers and student placements are also a massive part of our organisation - they use Sunshine Butterflies to learn, connect and get their foot in the door of the disability workforce”. There are many stories of success among the organisation’s 500 members. One young man with Aspergers who Leanne is very proud of joined the service a few years ago after moving from interstate where he was home schooled and suffered severe anxiety. “He could not engage or socialise and was often physically sick with nerves. Our music program coordinator introduced him to the drums, which he became very interested in which helped him with his confidence and social skills to get over his anxiety,” she said. “His drumming ability is amazing and he now gives other members lessons each week. His confidence and social skills have improved beyond anything we ever imagined. We have now employed him as a landscape labourer in the Sunshine Gardens Landscaping team. His family is so proud of his achievements and the young man he has become. “Unfortunately his mum passed away a couple of years ago. She would have been so happy to see how far he has come and that everything she wanted for him has happened.” One program the organisation is excited about is their animal enrichment program being design and developed to offer animal assisted therapy. The benefits of animal therapy are increasingly documented and the program has already gained attention from people across Australia and media outlets with TV show Totally Wild to screen a segment on

their farm later in the year. “Animal therapy is very special,” Leanne said. “The animals love being with our members who brush, stroke and pat them.” Sunshine Butterflies does not receive any government funding, so an income stream was created to pay for all operational costs and program expenses. This has been achieved with the setting up of a first aid training business, Allability Training, and a landscape and maintenance business they call Sunshine Gardens. Both social enterprises employ qualified and experienced staff who are paid above award rates. The businesses return 100 per cent of profits back to the organisation. With no reliance on government funding, Sunshine Butterflies is well-placed to transition to the NDIS and help families to benefit from the opportunities it may bring. “(We) no longer see ourselves as providers who deliver programs and instead see ourselves as innovators who create new products and services that deliver specific life outcomes for our members,” she said. “It’s been exciting empowering families and helping them to think outside the square and see their excitement knowing their sons or daughters will have a life full of endless opportunities.” While Leanne admits to underestimating the amount of hard work needed to set up Sunshine Butterflies to her “it has been worth every single battle and challenge to do so when I think of my son’s happiness and other members and families who all benefit from what started with a vision.” ●

So many choices.

TWO MINUTES WORKS OUT BY MARGARET MACCOLL Stealing two minutes to exercise as part of her daily chores helped get Lizzy Williamson moving again when she hit rock bottom with post-natal depression, and has resulted in a book she will bring to Noosa next week. The wife of Felix Williamson (son of Noosa’s favourite playwright, David), and the mother of two young daughters, Lizzy had stopped doing any form of exercise or anything for herself. “I went to see my doctor, and she gave me some treatment options. She said when you get on a plane they say to put your oxygen on first before helping others. I thought what can be my oxygen,” she said. “I used to be a dancer; I needed to move my body.” It was easy to find excuses like lack of time or equipment to not take any action. Lizzy started fitting two-minute workouts into her day. It was just a few lifts of the washing basket while hanging out the laundry, squats while brushing her teeth or wine bottle lifts. She realised other people would be struggling to fit in exercise in their days, so she started filming her workouts and sharing them with people on YouTube. “I realised those two minutes are better than nothing, and it propels you to do a little more,” she said. “You notice how much exercise benefits your mental health.” In her book, Two Minute Moves, Lizzie

U-TURN ON KIN KIN AUCTION BY MARGARET MACCOLL State Government-owned land beside Kin Kin Creek No.3 Bridge which was scheduled for auction on 27 October, has been taken off the market and an announcement made of safety upgrades to the area. The 4128sqm property at 966 PomonaKin Kin Road was listed as surplus land for sale on the Department of Transport and Main Roads website and with Harcourts Noosa. However, last Friday a Transport and Main Roads spokesperson said the land was no longer for sale. The move follows concerns raised by residents and letters written by Noosa MP, Glen Elmes, to the Minister of Road Safety, Mark Bailey. “Kin Kin Creek Bridge is a single lane bridge and is especially dangerous because of the hairpin approach to it on PomonaKin Kin Road, which could be addressed by using the State-owned land which is currently up for sale,” Mr Elmes said. “The Department’s ability to use this land to straighten the existing road and upgrade this notorious one lane bridge is a gift and should be an integral part of their master planning and design that will ultimately address the community’s long-standing safety concerns.” The government spokesperson said there were “no plans or funding allocated to straighten the road alignment or upgrade the bridge near the property (Kin Kin

The one-lane bridge follows a sharp turn. Creek No.3 Bridge). “We are progressively replacing/ upgrading the single-lane timber bridges across the state. Funding for this is carefully prioritised to ensure it is directed to locations demonstrating the greatest safety and capacity needs,” she said. The spokesperson said an upgrade to the signage at the Kin Kin Creek No.3 Bridge to improve motorists’ awareness of the

single-lane structure and tight curves as well as vegetation clearing on the southbound approach to the bridge to improve visibility, would be included in a $1 million project scheduled to start later this month. The project of improvements will be made to a 40km section of Kin Kin Road at prioritised locations through the Pomona, Pinbarren and Kin Kin areas, focused on identified and potential crash locations. ●

GARDENS IN LOCAL HANDS The transfer of Noosa Botanic Gardens to council will put the popular attraction back in local hands. The ceremony to celebrate the handover was attended by representatives from Seqwater and council, plus members of the Friends of Noosa Botanic Gardens. Mayor Tony Wellington said the transfer formalised council’s role in the day-to-day management of the gardens and gave the authority to start planning its future. Seqwater acting CEO Dan Spiller said the handover was part of Seqwater’s commitment to work with the Noosa

Council and the community to deliver a number of key projects that include a major upgrade of the Lake Macdonald facility. Mayor Wellington and council CEO Brett de Chastel joined Mr Spiller and Seqwater chairman Dan Hunt to plant a tree at the gardens today, to celebrate the occasion. “Watergums are native to this area," the mayor said. “As it grows, this one will attract butterflies and birds, which all add to the beauty and charm that have made the gardens such a special place to visit over the past 27 years," he said. ●

Planting a tree marked the changeover of the Noosa Botanic Gardens.

AGED CARE APPEAL WITHDRAWN

Your first stop before buying a home. View the whole picture.

An appeal against council’s decision to refuse an aged care facility for a site on Eenie Creek Road has been withdrawn. Council’s Development Assessment manager Kerri Coyle said council welcomed the applicant’s decision to discontinue the Planning and Environment Court appeal and consider other Noosa sites. Council refused the application for the 90-bed aged care facility in June, concerned the site, adjacent to national park land, posed a great a bushfire risk for an aged care. “Council recognises that Noosa needs more aged care beds, but council resolved that the risk of placing a large number of elderly and frail people on a site that may face fires from the national park, or need to be evacuated quickly, was too great,” Ms Coyle said.

SECURITY GRANTS AVAILABLE Grants of up to $1million are available for local councils and community groups to install security to help beat crime and anti-social behaviour. The Federal Government’s Safer Communities Fund encourages organisations to take up security projects, such as installing fixed or mobile CCTV cameras, security lighting and bollards. Applications for the Safer Communities Fund (Round 2) are open now until 14 November. For more information, visit https:// www.business.gov.au/assistance/ safer-communities-fund

JENKINS HANDPICKED FOR GREENS BY MARGARET MACCOLL Techno wizard Phillip Jenkins is projecting his dreams through politics in his new role as Noosa and Hinterland Greens State Government candidate. Voted in unanimously, the former Western Australian entrepreneur who admits to being a disillusioned Liberal voter was compelled to enter politics after seeing the destructive environmental scars being left on the landscape by mining. “I used to live in Gladstone, used to go crabbing. Now it’s two gas ports. It brings tears to your eyes to see what they’re done, what they’ve done to the waterways. It’s upsetting. “I’m all for development, but if we don’t have clean water and clean land we don’t live.” Phillip was born in 1953, and he and his wife, Carol, have two daughters. In 1990, Phillip began a business known as Audio Visual Consulting from his home, and based his business on experience rather than formal training. In 2000, he established a software development business, PIVoD (Permanent installation Video on Demand), making control systems to manage multimedia presentations in museums and libraries. The company won contracts for controlling and distributing multimedia to kiosks and exhibits at cultural institutions such as the Ontario Science Centre in Canada, the King Abdul Aziz Historical Centre in Saudi Arabia, and Museum Victoria’s Scienceworks exhibition. Phillip built PIVoD up to be one of the most prominent players worldwide in the media streaming and control business. The business employed more than 80 computer scientists and had three offices in Australia as well as offices in the USA, the Netherlands, and Dubai. Phillip sold the company in 2007. Over the past 10 years, Phillip has served as a director of the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research, the SciTech Discovery Centre in Perth, and the Alternative Technology Association in Melbourne. Here in Noosa, Phillip provides management consulting services to both large and small businesses. Regarded as one of the world’s highest profile designers, Phillip dreams up an audio visual concept for clients, then makes the contractual arrangements with

He’s an avid golfer and plays weekly. He’s also a keen cyclist who rides with a number of groups in Noosa. In June this year, he rode his bike, solo, from Rome to Paris via the Alps. Campaign manager Ahri Tallon said the party needed people like Phillip with real life experience able to listen to the concerns of the people of Noosa and have the ability to problem solve. Phillip believes a Greens representative in government would be in a position to use the balance of power to Noosa’s advantage. Phillip believes that the next Queensland government will once again be closely divided with neither major party being able to form government in its own right without the support of the cross bench. “This creates a great opportunity and great leverage for Noosa,” he said. He aims to use the balance of power to bring state resources to support major local issues identified as the hospital, the TAFE, Beckman’s Road, local small business, and the Noosa River. ●

LITTLE SEED, GREAT PRODUCE Hot on the heels of sell-out performances of Fiddler on the Roof last weekend, Little Seed Theatre Company has taken home nine awards at the Noosa Arts Theatre’s inaugural Shakespeare Festival. Little Seed director Johanna Wallace says the wealth of talent on the Sunshine Coast is “truly inspiring”. “So many of the young actors in Fiddler backed it up the following day with incredible, award-winning performances, which is just phenomenal,” Johanna says. “On Saturday night, Virgo Nash played Golde, a mother of five daughters in preRevolutionary Russia. The next day, she transformed herself into Tybalt Capulet, the main antagonist in Romeo and Juliet. “This shows a level of skill that is far beyond what we would normally expect from someone her age,” Johanna explains, adding that 14-year-old Virgo and her fellow actors took home the best dance and movement piece for Romeo and Juliet. Among the other stand-out performances, 16-year-old Harper Ramsey was presented with the award for best overall senior performer for his take on Mercutio from Romeo and Juliet. “Harper is 100 per cent committed to every role he plays, which is why he has won multiple awards for acting,” Johanna explains. The best open duologue went to Jacqueline Elley and Tallow Montague,

Harper Ramsay, right, in Fiddler on the Roof. who reprised their roles from Romeo and Juliet. “Jacqueline is only in Year 8, but took out the adult category with her mature performance.” Sixteen-year-old Abigail Waugh, who played Hodel in Fiddler on the Roof to much applause, was presented with the best monologue in the open section for Lady Macbeth’s famous sleepwalking scene from Macbeth. “Abigail stepped in with just two days’ notice, so this recognition is extraordinary,” Johanna explains. “Little Seed is doing rich, full-length versions of plays and musicals. These young performers are so talented that the memory of the work they’ve done can be called upon with very little rehearsal. I’m so proud of each of the performers

Virgo Nash. for their efforts.” Little Seed’s next production, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, plays at The J in January. www.little-seed.com.au ●

'SMISHING’ THE LATEST IN SCAMS Police are warning residents to be wary of smishing scams. The scams are like a phishing email but sent via SMS. Smishing is a security attack in which the user is tricked into downloading a Trojan horse, virus or other malware onto their phone or other mobile device. The SMS messages are short and to-the-point, containing URLs that direct the recipient to fake mobile websites which are almost indistinguishable from the real thing. Most ‘smishing’ attacks provide a link which if clicked, may take you to a dangerous website, asking you to complete personal information which can be used to hack your online (email or banking) accounts. Police are saying to be wary of SMS messages urging you to “act now so you don’t miss out” or “click on this or you will get locked out”. Cybercriminals often create a sense of urgency to get you to click the link. Do not click on any links contained in an SMS message unless it is from a trusted source. ●

THE LOWDOWN

FRIENDS GATHER IN THE GARDENS

THREE … NBN tips for new provider

1

Assess usage first, then look at plans and providers that can meet those needs. Those who are only emailing or browsing the web, using the internet for Facebook or online coursework, or live alone, a moderate speed plan and upload-download allowance may be enough.

2

Think about phone needs. When connecting to NBN residents will no longer have a normal landline phone so they will need to decide whether they want a regular phone service over the internet to replace it. They may be content with services such as Skype, Apple FaceTime and Viber.

Q&A

Noosa Council’s Jackie Kelk and Glenda Cassidy with NBG Friend Joan Challenger.

Paul Thomas is the manager of the Imperial Hotel and Eumundi Brewery.

What is your earliest childhood memory? Holidays by the lake staying in the “bach” (that’s Kiwi for holiday house) in Lake Hawea near Wanaka on the South Island of New Zealand. What did you want to be when you were growing up? A policeman. What was your first job? My first full-time job was as a bank officer with the National Bank of New Zealand (now ANZ). What is your most treasured possession? My wife. Enough said! What’s your favourite book? Anything by Lee Child. I good a good bit of escapism with Jack Reacher.

What do you do to relax? Walks along the Noosa River or through the Noosa National Park. Pretty hard to beat. What music or program have you been listening to/watching lately? I’ve been playing lots of ’70s and ’80s vinyl lately - which can now be heard in the Tasting Bar of The Imperial Hotel. There’s nothing like the sound of vinyl and the grooves of one’s youth. What is your greatest fear? I dreamt last week that we ran out of beer. More of a nightmare than a dream. I certainly hope this doesn’t ever become reality. The popularity of our new Eumundi Brewery Lager and Eumundi Brewery Pale Ale is certainly seeing them selling fast

WELCOME TO A NEW KIND OF PREVENTIVE DENTISTRY

(thankfully our brewers are keeping up with the pace!). What is your next challenge? Launching our Eumundi Brewery Tasting Tours in the weeks ahead. Members of the public will be able to take a 60 minute tour of our 100-year-old hotel and new brewery. They’ll hear about the history of brewing in Eumundi, discover what makes our craft beers so great, learn about the beer making process and enjoy a ‘tasting log’ (Eumundi is an old timber town after all!) of our new Eumundi Brewery Lager, Eumundi Brewery Pale Ale and other seasonal beers. What is the most important thing in your life? My health.

3

Consider technical support. Those who are not confident about their technical skills may prefer a provider that offers better technical support ... some just contract their support to overseas call centres. Make a long list of questions and call them to get answers before committing to a contract.

Friends of Noosa Botanic Gardens, along with senior staff from Seqwater and Noosa Council enjoyed a picnic lunch in the shelter at the Gardens after a tree planting to commemorate the handover of land from Seqwater to Noosa Council this week. ●

TENNIS CLUB GETS A FREE FACELIFT

Skills Alliance students busy sprucing up the club.

An offer from Skills Alliance trainees to repaint their clubhouse inside and out for free was an offer Peregian Tennis Club accepted with much gratitude. Court manager Andrew Veale said the small, three-court not-for-profit club needed to put aside any surplus funds towards re-surfacing its courts so members were thrilled to receive the repaint. “This is not something the club had within its budget and it means our

clubhouse is back to its best. It looks great,” he said. The club welcomed the Skills Alliance Community-Work-Skills Project team trainees from 9 to 13 October, along with their supervisor Gary. The team is about to graduate after completing their Certificate I in construction by working on recreation spaces and facilities across the Sunshine Coast.

The clubs and facilities supplied the paint and materials and Skills Alliance did the rest. The work team’s members also used their building skills to construct a new bench seat and re-furbish the club’s tired old noticeboard. Peregian Tennis Club thanked the members of the crew for their hard work with a barbecue and drinks at the end of their final day. ●

HINTERLAND’S HISTORY OUT IN THE OPEN BY MARGARET MACCOLL It was a case of being in the right place at the right time for Ron West when he discovered Pomona’s Majestic Theatre while looking for a venue to stage the Sydney Film Festival’s travelling film festival in 1974. Ron, the festival’s technical officer and organ player, got a call from film critic David Stratton to find a location on the Sunshine Coast to stage the travelling film festival, giving him only 10 days notice. “Someone told me about a theatre in Pomona. I got hold of the man who owned it and begged him to say yes,” he said. Crowds of 180-200 people turned up for each session making the venue the most popular of all visited by the travelling festival. Ron bought the theatre that year and owned it until 2006. He almost shut it in 1985 when competition from the newly opened cinema in Noosa Junction took away their customers. Just in time he got a call from the entertainment officer at the then Hyatt Coolum looking for something with a touch of nostalgia for a group of travel agents. “I put on a screening of Rudolph Valentino in Son of the Sheik and played the organ,” he said. “I just made it up as I went along. They all fell about laughing.” Word of the act spread and Ron continued running silent movies for the next 26 years. The Majestic Theatre was one of 30 buildings to be viewed on Saturday as part of the inaugural Sunshine Coast Open House. The theatre is now being operated and restored by volunteers, including Ron, from Pomona Arts Incorporated. The group has three committees, responsible for the theatre, railway station gallery, and arts and crafts market. Theatre volunteers Don Clark and John Brooks have spent the past five years restoring the theatre’s organ. Don who retired from Channel 7 technical department brought the organ to the theatre from Brisbane to replace one that had been destroyed in a flood in 2012. “It came from the Royal Theatre in Chester in England,” Don said. “It was imported to Australia by Blair Linnet and put in his garage. He passed away 10 years ago. I knew about the organ and I negotiated with his family who donated it to the theatre. We began to take it out of the garage five years ago and bring it up here. “It had to be pulled apart to the last screw and restored.” There are some pipes still to replace and Don expects it to be completed early next year. Also open to the public in town was the Pomona Fire Station opened in 2015 but built with a traditional facade to fit in with the historical buildings in the quaint town. The crew at the high tech station have multiple roles fighting fires, attending to road crash rescues and assisting ambulance officers. Captain Sam Spink said extreme drought conditions earlier in the year had made for a very busy time and a crew “on tenterhooks” fearing for disastrous fires but recent rains had alleviated the situation. constructed in 1930 to replace a demolished timber factory. Built at a cost of 10,000 pounds and comprising a butter roller, churn room, cold storage and pasteurising room it quickly became one of the model factories of Queensland. Increasing production costs and a decline in the dairy industry forced the factory to close in 1975. Bought by Noosa Council in 1991 it became an arts centre, and in 2016 management was handed to the community Cooroy Future Group. Visitors to the Open House had the chance to tour a range of architecturally diverse, well-designed and historic buildings and were able to learn more about them thanks to informed volunteers. ●

SOCIAL SCENE

A RIGHT ROYAL TREAT IN CLASSIC CARS BY MARGARET MACCOLL The Combined Coastal Car Club was counting its blessings on Sunday when the rain cleared for the annual Cooroy Car Show and Swap meet at Johnson Park. Club spokesman Brendan O’Brien said more than 100 cars and some serious money in the form of Ferraris, Jaguars, Porsches, classics and vintage cars attended the event. The royalty claim definitely went to Lindsay Price for his 1934 Daimler which had been used in the coronation parade for King George VI. Bought by the marine engineer in 1999, the Daimler even boasts a doily containing the crocheted HRH emblem. “It gets so many lovely comments,” said Lindsay, who has no plans to part with the vehicle. And for enthusiasm you couldn’t go past Rob Jeffs and his 1948 Ford Mercury. A motor mechanic by trade Rob has spent countless hours returning the car named Miss Emma to its original glory. Rob said parts can be sourced from America where they are still being produced but it has taken him a bit of research to find people skilled to replace glass and take the little bumps out of its chrome strips. Rob treats his restoration as an ongoing puzzle. “The greatest enjoyment is in solving the different problems you come across,” he said. ●

IT’S NONE OF OUR BUSINESS BUT …

Occi and Mischa need a home.

CUTE PAIR LOOKING FOR LOVE At Noosa RSPCA dogs come and go, but every now and then a really special dog or two comes along. Two German shepherd crosses Mischa and Occi have become the darlings of Noosa RSPCA but after a two month stay staff are wondering why no one has taken home the dogs they have grown to love. RSPCA spokeswoman Kitty O’Brien said the challenge was to find someone willing to take both dogs as after spending their lives together they are inseparable. “They’re quite dependent on each other. They play tug-o-war together. It’s quite sweet," she said. The pooches are very friendly and very social and being middle aged are not high energy. “We just love them. They’re just beautiful. They just want to be part of someone’s family.” Mischa has hip dysplasia but having been put on a diet to lose some excess kilos and pain relief she has greatly improved. Both dogs are vaccinated, desexed and microchipped. Anyone wanting two delightful older dogs should go and visit them at the RSPCA at Hollett Street, Noosaville.

WHICH DIY JOB DO YOU HATE THE MOST? A recent survey of 1700 customers conducted by find-a-tradie site ServiceSeeking.com.au revealed some surprising differences in attitude between men and women and their thoughts on do-it-yourself jobs around the house. When asked “What trade skills do you most wish you had”, men seem to be jealous of tradies with technical skills, whereas women admire tradesmen that are good with their hands.

In response to that question 42 per cent of men answered electrical skills compared to 33 per cent of women while more than a quarter of women wished for landscaping skills compared to just 18 per cent of men. Men and women hate DIY for different reasons. Women are less likely to complain about wasting their time than men (34 per cent v 40 per cent). Men are 50 per cent less likely to complain about being physically exhausted than women. Men are 46 per cent more likely to try DIY before hiring a tradie, while women are less likely to hire DIY, men more often (42 per cent more) find that their DIY job doesn’t turn out how they picture it. Not surprisingly, everyone’s most despised DIY job was the blocked toilet. ●

Back in 2003 he was tagged by local media as the surf art guru and Owen has always been recognised for his surf art sprays. These have been large murals like the one on the motorway, canvasses and corrugated iron paintings, even spraying surf art on refrigerators. This month he has curated the fourth Surf Art Expo on the Sunshine Coast and the first one to be held in Noosa. It will feature the longest list ever for the expo, over 30 local artists and a series of live art demonstrations. Owen has pulled together some extraordinary artisans who work with fairly unconventional tools and unusual mediums. The public can expect to enjoy live art demonstrations from some of the best artist in their known trades, including chainsaw sculptor Shane Christensen, timber stain mural artist David Hardy, and surfboard shapers Tully St John and Andrew Warhurst. Owen Cavanagh and Ron Tickle will be demonstrating live surf mural art. Two competitions will be held on the day. For children The Kids Surf Art will have two categories and for adults there is the Best Surf Style Vehicle. Kids can bring along prepared artworks and vehicles can show up on the day. Lots of great prizes to be won. The fourth Surf Art Expo will be a charity event to support locals with funds raised from a simple gold coin donation. All proceeds will go to the Wishlist Foundation and The Surfrider Foundation. It’s all set to be a fun, family event on 28 and 29 October at Noosa Surf Works at 1/11 Bartlett Street, Noosaville, at the Shotgun Factory. Visit www.solearte.com.au. ●

AIRBNB FOR RESPITE CARE Adrienne Penny’s simple but effective way of giving carers a well-earned break by offering up her Airbnb studio in quiet times has earned her both regional and state Carers Queensland awards and inspired her to take it further. The Sunshine Beach resident was recently presented with the Carer Friendly Business Award in the Great Service Category which led her to set up The Carers Project. “It’s a very simple concept, which involves giving a few days respite to carers, free of charge,” she said. “I have a self-contained apartment below my house Iisted on Airbnb Natural Rainforest Beach Studio - which for the last few years I have made available to carers in the quieter times, mainly midweek. “Carers Queensland put me in contact with carers most in need of a few days break and dates are organised. “I am set up and used to having guests to stay, so it is an easy ask. “What I have learned from carers who have stayed here is that this opportunity for some time out has made a huge difference to them and helped them to go on. “In turn it has inspired me, meeting such wonderful, selfless people and knowing I can help to make a positive difference in someone’s life.” Adrienne said with more than 2.5 million largely unpaid carers in Australia she is encouraging other people in the community who let space on Airbnb to consider giving a few days respite to carers. “It’s so easily doable and is such a great fit. A positive spin off from the new sharing economy, which can meet a need which exists in every community, with one in eight people acting as carers for family members. “From what I’ve seen and heard, most carers have had to give up work and financial circumstances mean paying for some time out for themselves is not a viable option,” she said. “I am reminded how fortunate I am and that one of life’s best things is to give service to others. “It leaves you feeling warm and happy inside and full of gratitude.” ●

LETTERS

Post your letters to: 36 Mary St, Noosaville, 4566 or email: newsdesk@noosatoday.com.au

DO UNTO OTHERS I was prompted by your letter last week, from Frances of Cooroy, to look for the Bible I was presented with as a scripture prize almost 60 years since. It was a nice Bible, made suitably enticing to a young fella by illustrations and gold edging to the pages, but it seems to have been thrown out. So then I googled Genesis 19. What a shocking story of incest and sodomy! It seems a “good” church can’t resist threatening punishment and damnation using salacious material written perhaps 500 to 1000 years BC. Only God knows what Christ would have made of that. One hopes he would have understood that sexual orientation is not something we necessarily choose and that love is to be treasured when it is validated by reciprocity. Adrien Le Voyant from Peregian Springs was prudent enough to choose an innocuously ambiguous quote from Isaiah. Select your evil and, bingo, your prejudices validated - Old Testament style. One wonders what Christ would have made of such tosh written 750 years before his birth. I am no longer religious but I do have faith that a true christian does unto others as they would be done by, and lives and lets live. Chris Hindmarsh, Tinbeerwah.

READ YOUR BIBLE In response to “Frances“ of Cooroy, “Search for the Spirit“ (Letters, 19 October). Frances is totally correct, as a true christian, we must adhere to all that is in the Bible, which is damning of homosexuality, whether male or female. My personal view of gays is that they are beautiful people, many of whom are talented and have many beautiful gifts, and highly intellligent too. They are born gay, which comes out as they get older in many a case, and many very young. They cannot help being gay whatsoever, and should be treated decently by society. Marriage though should not be given as law, for their sake especially, nor in intimate relationships. Read the Bible correctly. Thelma Williams, Tewantin.

BUBBLE, TOIL, TROUBLE The witches’ cauldron of Elanda Point continues to bubble, seemingly unattended. Mark Denham, applicant for the ruling coven has the guts to come out and state his view that it should come off the fire, meanwhile Glen Elmes from the rival clan is content to leave it to those who he assumes are

LENSCAPE

If you are up before the sun, you are privy to the wonder of it rising over the Noosa River just as Stephen Grail was. With the last of the morning fog over the water, the morning sun gives our river an even more magical feel. If you would like to send in a photo to Lenscape, simply email newsdesk@noosatoday.com.au in charge, despite his recent assertion that he has a deep respect for the pristine waters of Noosa. The word from aforesaid experts is that they are still waiting, after six months, for even more fuel to add to the flames before they can make a decision. What is really going on here? It all seems quite simple to me - will any possible overriding public good be served by the proposed downgrade of a key environmental resource which is at the heart of the Noosa Biosphere, purely for a commercial interest? Noosa Council looked closely at the issue back in April and were unable to find any such justification on the part of the proponent. If he can come up with a last-minute show-cause, why is it taking so long for him to do so? Answers please - there’s another uncontrollable fire ready for ignition - it’s called the State Election. Noel Bird, Boreen Point.

NBN OUTAGES I refer to the article titled ‘Heed NBN warning’ (NT Oct 19). The article states, “All NBN services will cease to operate during blackouts unless individuals install their own back-up power services.“ While NBN customers need to be aware of the need for back-up power for NBN to function in a power outage, it is arguably misleading. NBN have informed council that, where fibre is connected to the node, the node will not operate during a prolonged blackout, thus impacting on all lines feeding from a node to connected premises. Nodes typically service around 400 services and are supplied with a battery back-up power supply, but that will only last between three and eight hours. NBN advise that mobile back-up generators may be delivered to nodes where power has been lost, but this assumes that NBN can get generators to the nodes during an emergency situation such as a flood event. The proposal also assumes that the back-up generators will be regularly refuelled. During Cyclone Debbie, we are informed that some of these generators were stolen.

Thursday, 26 October, 2017

Plainly NBN’s emergency plan and its potential failings have implications for disaster management and our disaster team’s ability to communicate with residents, particularly where power is cut for a day or more. Council and district disaster management groups have been in discussion with NBN over this issue for some time and have highlighted the potential inadequacy of the service. The issue has been raised at state and federal levels, and while some progress has been made, there is still much concern. NBN has also advised that, where fixed wireless broadband services are being utilised, as in much of our hinterland, the old telephone copper cable may be able to be utilised for phone services. As yet, NBN have yet to clarify how this may occur. Meanwhile, for those in urban areas on fibre to the node system, having a back-up power service at home will be of no use if the node runs out of power. Joe Jurisevic, Noosa Shire Councillor and Deputy Chair Noosa Disaster Management Group

RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT As your readers would be aware I have been working closely with a number of State Government Ministers and departmental staff together with Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington to simplify and improve the co-ordination of management responsibilities of the Noosa River. I read with interest in Noosa Today (19 October) comments from Noosa Council’s Jan Maddin about the Noosa River Plan and the status of negotiations between council and the state that need clarification. The ‘Boats Dumping Waste Into River’ is a perfect example of what is not happening with regard to state and local government management coordination - a matter the mayor and I have been fighting hard to resolve. In answer to a question on notice I recently asked of the Minister for Environment and National Parks, Steven Miles MP about the inspection of pump-out facilities on the Noosa River he said that in 2016, the Department of Transport and Main Roads’

Maritime Safety Queensland officers conducted just four patrols of ‘live aboard’ vessels on the Noosa River; and in the same year the Boating and Fisheries Patrol conducted only 14 boat inspections and no breaches of pump-out regulations were detected. This information shows clearly the need to formalise an agreement between the council and the state to vastly increase inspections and ensure compliance. Of the five State Ministers involved, the Minister for Main Roads, Road Safety and Ports, Mark Bailey MP has the most responsibility and as such the mayor and I have met with him and written to him on a number of occasions. He has only just returned to his portfolio in the past few weeks following a politically triggered hiatus and we will be seeking more meetings with him to progress this as a matter of urgency. I will continue to fight for a formal and binding Memorandum of Understanding between the State and Noosa Council that will ensure the comprehensive protection of SEQ’s cleanest and busiest waterway. Glen Elmes MP, Member for Noosa.

NATURE OF WORK It was inspiring to read Hollie Harris’s article about the “Powerhouse Collective“ and its founder Aimee Sheriff. I wish Aimee and all the mothers who attend the collective the very best. The importance and recognition of a mother’s bond to her children has been recognised within this collective. One point which I do cringe about though was the wording on the front page describing the collective “Women at Work“. Then Aimee describing “work“ as that which is paid for. Surely mothering before a paid job is work. All mothers work in rearing their children. It is a very hard job at times. Because mothering is unpaid work it should still be regarded as work. Until all work outside of mothering is described as “paid work“ then mothering will continue to be seen as worthless. Susan Russell, Eumundi. noosatoday.com.au

A THIRD TIME WINNER NOOSA building designer Gerard Smith has won the coveted Building Designers Association of Australia’s national Design Excellence Award for the third time. The BDA Australia National Awards judging panel chose Gerard Smith Design’s Air Residence, built on the coast south of Wollongong, for its balance between creativity and clever product utilisation within proposed budgets. “The Air Residence design stood out because it seamlessly incorporated sustainable building design and construction throughout the entire home, while still looking elegant and refined,” a BDA Australia spokesperson said. “The home has a seamless connection to the outdoors as all living areas have a spectacular view of the (Great Dividing Range) escarpment, beach, and the swimming pool, yet still providing privacy for its occupants. “The sense of space and volume afforded by the high raking ceilings and abundant glazing together with the high quality finishes and workmanship combine to give a feeling of opulence to this home

which enjoys an enviable beachside location very close to the cosmopolitan city of Sydney. “In addition, the home wonderfully features the following sustainable building design elements: passive solar design principles of natural light, cross flow ventilation, a photovoltaic system for solar energy generation, and energy efficient appliances. “All these make for an innovative and well-thought-out design that showcases fine craftsmanship and high quality finishing.” Mr Smith, who designed the home for a long-term friend and his young family, said the win was “totally unexpected”. “Many people strive to win this award throughout their career so to win this award for the third time is overwhelming,” he said. “I am extremely grateful.” Mr Smith said the brief was to design a tasteful, unique contemporary home, and the finished house had grabbed a lot of positive attention. ●

The Air Residence was built on the south coast of Wollongong for a young family.

The brief was to create a comfortable family home taking advantage of the suburban beachside block while maximising spectacular ocean and mountain views.

DESPITE persistent rain, visitors eager to get a glimpse inside some of Noosa and the Sunshine Coast’s architecturallydiverse buildings came out for the inaugural Sunshine Coast Open House event. More than 2500 visits were logged at 30 buildings, from historic homes like Bankfoot House, to local landmarks like Caloundra Lighthouse, to innovative public buildings like the Cooroy Library and futuristic homes, as well as Open House’s associated events. A Sunshine Coast Open House spokeswoman said the opportunity to hear first-hand from architects or others involved in the building process, was a big pull for visitors. “Inherently we’re all very curious people, we like to have a little bit of a stickybeak, for want of a better phrase,” she said. “I think the prospect of being able to go into particular buildings you can’t ordinarily visit is quite appealing. “I think (people liked) the opportunity to go in and have a proper guided tour - a lot of the tour hosts were architects or people who worked at that particular building so they knew about the history and the stories behind the buildings and how they are used today.” This year’s Open House project was the first of what organisers hope will become an annual event celebrating the region’s architecture. Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington has said every building contributed to the quality of life of its specific users and the broader community. It should come as no surprise then, that locals and visitors to the region have embraced the chance to learn more about the buildings that surround them. The Sunshine Coast Open House spokeswoman said giving people access to the stories behind the buildings that

The Gregson and Weight Buderim Chapel Complex overlooks a coastal paperbark forest. shape the region was important. “It fosters a lot of pride in our place and where we live,” she said. “There’s a lot of people who are very passionate about the Sunshine Coast, whether they’re locals who call it home or visitors who come on weekends and holidays.” At the Sunshine Coast Open House Architecture Forum on 14 October architect John Mainwaring said it was community passion that shaped the Noosa landscape decades ago. “When Gabriel (Poole) and I opened office in Hastings Street there was this incredible community passion about anti high-rises,” he said. Anyone who attended Sunshine Coast Open House events can provide feedback at sunshinecoastopenhouse.com.au or by emailing info@sunshinecoastopenhouse. com.au. ●

SO, WHAT’S INSIDE? 1. Boiler House and Kilns The Cooroy Lower Mill Site Kiln was built in the late 1950s to dry timber for the local sawmill. It enabled faster seasoning of hardwood timbers, allowing the mill to increase productivity and expand its markets. The kiln was heated with steam generated from the adjacent boiler, which was fueled with sawmill waste, operating until 2000 when the mill closed. Nine years later it was restored and redeveloped as a visitor interpretive centre. 2. Pomona Railway Station Gallery Pomona Railway station operated for 100 years from 1891-1991, and in 2000

the dilapidated station buildings (the information room, signal room, station master room, banana shed, carriage exhibition room and blacksmith shed) were moved to council land and transformed into the Pomona Railway Station Gallery, becoming unique spaces for artists and craftspeople, as well as for events. 3. Cooroy Library The vision for Cooroy Library was to create a place to capture the heart of the community. Constructed in 2010, the building was designed by architect Brewster Hjorth, which was last year voted one of Six of the World’s Coolest Modern Libraries. ●

BUYING QUESTIONS BUYING a home can be exciting, a little bit frightening and incredibly confusing. From what kind of home to buy, where to buy it, how to find it and, once found, how to make sure everything checks out, there are so many questions to answer and so many unfamiliar processes to navigate. One of the big questions is “how are we going to pay for it?” Borrowing to buy a home is often the largest investment a person will make in their lifetime. Diverse Lending Solutions mortgage brokers Brooke Davies and Pete Lever offered some of their insights into the process in this quick Q&A. Q. How much of a risk is taking out a home loan? A. There is always an element of risk associated with any lending. Those risks can be mitigated by ensuring you set up the right loan structures and strategies for your personal risk appetite. Knowing what you are comfortable with and having that conversation with a professional is essential. Q. What is the first thing people need to think about when looking for a mortgage? A. Think about how much you can really afford to borrow. Understanding your budget, financial needs and what your new repayments will look like as well as the associated costs for the life of the loan is important. Q. What’s the difference between using a mortgage broker and going directly to a bank? A. Choice. Mortgage professionals

SHOPPING CENTRE SOLD STABLE income and strong development opportunities have attracted investors to a Peregian Springs retail centre.

Pete Lever and Brooke Davies share their insights into the home financing industry. (brokers) have access to a large number of lending institutions, all with different specialisations and niches. A bank will generally have one set of products which may or may not suit your needs. A broker will position you with the most suitable lender and product. Q. How has financing property changed over the past 10 years? A. The Australian government has introduced many regulatory changes in the past decade. The majority of these have been proactive approaches to encouraging responsible lending practices. The most recent change has been a strong focus on true living expenses and full transparency of personal spending. Q. What changes do you expect to see in the next 10 years?

A. The advancement of FinTech and cloud-based software will streamline the loan application process meaning less delays on overloaded bank approval systems equating to faster turnaround times. You will still need to talk to your broker about your needs, but the time to approval will be much quicker. Q. Mortgages are often repaid over decades. Are there things people can do to change their current mortgage to take advantage of changes within the industry? A. The competition between lenders is high and this can provide big benefits to customers who have a good relationship with a savvy broker who routinely reviews their loan structure and ensures that it meets their current goals and objectives. ●

LIVE A true Aussie icon of rock - Ross Wilson makes his way to Noosa next week.

ROSS STILL ROCK SOLID Ross Wilson is coming to the Villa Noosa Hotel next week! With a stellar career spanning more than 45 years and showing no signs of slowing, Mr Eagle Rock Ross Wilson is one of Australian rock music’s most enduring and lauded talents. Twice inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame (1989 solo and 2006 with Daddy Cool), Wilson continues to win acclaim. Eagle Rock has been included in the National Film and Sound Archive 'Sounds of Australia Collection’, his latest three singles from his new album 'I Come In Peace’ have been added to playlists at over 50 commercial stations nationally and the title track is released as a single accompanied by a hot new video, the 1st RW studio vid since 1990!!! Ross again sets new records for a performer of his generation with his '5 Decades of Cool’ concert series was nominated for the 2010 Helpmann Award for 'Best Contemporary Australian Concert’. Wilson released two albums in 2010, the contemporary 'I Come In

Peace’ and a new 'Best Of’ entitled Mr Eagle Rock, both released independently through Shock Entertainment. From Daddy Cool to Mondo Rock, as a solo artist, or as songwriter of A-grade classics such as Eagle Rock, Cool World and A Touch of Paradise, or producer of the legendary Skyhooks, Jo Jo Zep, The Johnnys, and more recently The Screaming Jets, Ross’ involvement with success has continued unabated. He fronted Daddy Cool and exploded out of the '70s playing rootsy 50s sounds. Then formed Mondo Rock who surfed the contemporary scene with chart topping singles and albums from the mid-70s to the late '80s. As a solo performer and major songwriter, he continued to achieve success and make his mark during the '90s and beyond with his songs being recorded by artists as diverse as Jimmy Barnes, John Farnham, DEF-FX, Custard, Jennifer Rush (EU), Troy Cassar-Daley, Leslie Avril, Hey Gringo, You Am I, Uncle Bill, Keke (Spain), Renee Geyer, Christine Anu,

Duane Jarvis (US), Elkie Brooks (UK), Ann Kirkpatrick and Lee Kernaghan, Sovereign, Pleasantville, Beccy Cole, Sonic Jihad, and The Wiggles! On trips to Europe and the USA, he collaborated with O/S writers and concluded the millenium as a special guest performer on John Farnham’s “I Can’t Believe I’m 50" tour and live CD/DVD. On top of this in the 'noughties’ Ross kept a busy tour schedule of his own with his live action band Ross Wilson and The Peaceniks, including national appearances on the successful 'A Day On The Green’ series with Chris Isaak and also Crosby Stills and Nash, then began sessions for 'Tributary’ (Liberation Blue) released mid-2008), a semi-acoustic project that revisits songs from his career catalogue resulting in sometimes radical rearrangements of the hits plus fresh airings of worthy lesser known works. Reactions from both critics and fans have been overwhelmingly positive. Late 2008 found Ross in Nashville with producer Mark Moffatt directing

sessions for an album full of brand new songs. These tracks were temporarily shelved while he took the 2009 '5 Decades Of Cool’ concerts to Melbourne and Sydney and released the resulting filmed footage as the debut RW solo DVD 'Ross Wilson Live At The Palais’ showcasing RW’s long and diverse catalogue with guest performances from members of The Pink Finks, The Party Machine, Daddy Cool, Spectrum, Mondo Rock, Skyhooks and a three-song duet with national icon Jimmy Barnes. Now with the 'I Come In Peace’ album being his most successful solo album since “Dark Side of the Man” Wilson continues to expand his horizons globally with Joe Cocker recording, 'I Come In Peace’ on his latest global hit album. He still regularly performs over 100 shows a year and has a touring schedule mapped out into 2018. Don’t miss an Aussie icon next Thursday 2 November (opening 7pm.) Tickets are only $34.70 from www. villanoosa.com.au. ●

Colors, by Beck

The Break, by Marian Keyes

At the very start of his career in his early twenties, Beck’s voice blistered and cracked just thinking about the pop zeitgeist. “MTV Makes Me Want to Smoke Crack,” he declared, on account of everyone being so bright and perky. About a year later, in 1994, Beck scored his first and biggest hit with “Loser” and became the toast of MTV. From that moment on, he’s been the weirdest guy in music. He has spent a lot of time trying to get the balance of Colors “not retro and not modern” just so. He more or less nailed that bit, but what’s lacking from his Big Happy Pop Record is some kind of strong emotion that could elevate these songs above the “well crafted but innocuous” camp - something more than an idea. ●

Amy’s husband Hugh isn’t really leaving her. At least, that’s what he promises. He is just taking a break - from their marriage, their children and, most of all, from their life together. For six-months Hugh will lose himself in South East Asia, and there is nothing Amy can say or do about it. Yes, it’s a mid-life crisis, but let’s be clear: a break isn’t a break up - yet . . . It’s been a long time since Amy held a briefcase in one hand and a baby in the other. She never believed she’d have to go it alone again. She just has to hold the family together until Hugh comes back. But a lot can happen in six-months. When Hugh returns, if he returns, will he be the same man she married? ●

MAD TO MISS THIS DINNER BY HOLLIE HARRIS The Mad Hatters Gala Dinner is here, and on Saturday 18 November Cafe Doonan will host a very special three-course dinner to support our Coast Guard Noosa. colour artists - as well as raffles and quizzes. There will be plenty of opportunities to win some great prizes at the Mad Hatters Gala Dinner, with all proceeds going toward Coast Guard Noosa. Each year Coast Guard volunteers perform thousands of rescues ranging from assisting sinking vessels, vessels with flat batteries and other mechanical problems, vessels that have run aground and often towing these disabled vessels back to safe

harbour as well as medivac responses. As you can imagine, the vessels must be maintained to commercial standards and be ready to respond 24 hours per day, every single day of the year. This takes a great deal of dedication from our volunteers to fund-raise the money needed to keep these vessels ready to respond at any time. The Gala Dinner is helping our Noosa branch raise some much needed funding.

Why not put together a table with a bunch of friends or family and help support our Coast Guard at this fun evening out at Cafe Doonan? Phone 5471 0781 to book your seats and be sure to get in early as seats are limited. The Australian Volunteer Coast Guard Mad Hatters Gala Dinner is on Saturday 18 November, 6pm to 9.30pm. SAUCE 2 cups oat milk. 1/3 cup shiso miso paste. 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg. 2 tablespoons olive oil. 1/4 cup spelt flour.

METHOD 1. Preheat oven to 180C. Heat oil in a frying pan on medium. Saute onion, garlic and chilli for 2-3 mins until onion is tender. Add mushroom, pumpkin, capsicum and herbs and saute for further 3-4 mins. 2. Stir in lentils, tomatoes, stock and paste. Cover the bottom of a 10-cup ovenproof dish with half vegetable mixture. Arrange single layer of pasta over lentils and cover with half miso sauce. Repeat layers. 5. D. Yet, other scientists disagree. What about vitamin E? “The new evidence says, no, don’t take it,” Professor Tucker said. A decade ago there was a big push for people to take vitamin E, but then scientists realised it actually wasn’t that helpful and might even increase the risk of some kinds of cancers. Finally, we know that eating a diet full of fruits and vegies packed with different nutrients can help us live longer and prevent heart disease. But what happens when these vitamins are put into one big multivitamin? “There’s been some big studies that show they didn’t really have major effect,” Professor Tucker said. One large study recruited 14,000 older men and gave half multivitamins while the other half were given a placebo. The men were tracked for more than a decade. And, after all that work? There was no difference in rates of heart attacks and heart disease between the two groups. Curiously, the men who took the multivitamins had a slightly reduced risk of cancer. But the researchers said this was not significant because other large studies have been mixed. But Professor Tucker wasn’t ready to throw out the multivitamins just yet as she said a few large studies into multivitamins have been done in doctors and they might have better diets than your average Joe. So, for people who aren’t eating so well, “it doesn’t hurt to take a multivitamin for insurance,” she said, Overall, it doesn’t look like vitamins in a pill do all that much. But studying the benefit of taking vitamins in large groups of people is really tricky, and all the research can’t really tell if particular individuals should be taking vitamins or not. ●

Physiokey is latest in the well known and researched medical technology in the field of bio-feedback controlled non-invasive neurostimulation. The development of Physiokey is now characterised by a significant increase in treatment efficiency, speed, and more importantly, positive patient outcomes. What will Physiokey do for you?

12365766-DJ38-17

The big question is: do vitamins have healing power? The jury is still out on that one. In a recent study, scientists tracked large groups of people to see if taking vitamins reduced the risk of getting certain diseases. When vitamin B supplements are put under the microscope researchers find “no evidence” that they prevent heart disease, strokes or cancer. Vitamin B also “does not appear to improve cognitive function” in healthy people, or those who are starting to go a little dotty. As for helping people with depression? It wasn’t particularly useful for that either. But when it came to improving depression, or dementia the researchers say more work is needed. There is evidence that taking vitamin C and zinc lozenges could help people get over a cold a bit faster. “The evidence for zinc lozenges is very strong,” said Harri Hemila at the University of Helsinki in Finland. But, there’s not good evidence these supplements will keep people from getting sick in the first place. To know if people were low on vitamin D, scientists would have to agree on one thing - exactly how much vitamin D people need. And, perhaps surprisingly, scientists are still debating this. “There is a lot of animated discussion right now,” said Professor Katherine Tucker, a nutritional epidemiologist at the University of Massachusetts in Lowell. Part of the debate is that it’s unclear what vitamin D is beneficial for. A team brought together by the Institute of Medicine in the US several years ago wrote that vitamin D was important for bone health. But, they said, other conditions, like diabetes, depression or cancer, could not be “linked reliably or consistently” to vitamin

The German developed Physiokey Scenar has revolutionised a therapy method that was initially used in Russia since the early 1980’s. It specialises in the fast relief and sustained recovery from both acute and chronic pain as well as loss of function. The physiokey has been medically approved to do just that.

FRIDAY FORUM Much of the landscape of Australia is suggestive of an ancient history that involved erupting volcanoes, but we do not generally think of Australia today as having been volcanically active, even within the past few thousand years or so. Yet it has been, and it is probable that a volcano will one day erupt again on mainland Australia. While geologists are reasonably knowledgeable about the recent history of Australian volcanism, some significant mysteries remain. This week’s guest speaker at Friday Environment Forum on 27 October, Professor Patrick Nunn from the University of the Sunshine Coast, will explain what science knows about young Australian volcanoes where they are, when they last erupted, and what effects these eruptions had - and then goes on to talk about Australian Aboriginal memories of volcanic activity. Friday Environment Forum is held at the NPA Environment Centre, 5 Wallace Drive, Noosaville starting at 10.30am. Coffee and tea available from 10am. Visit www.noosaparks.org.au for more information. Experts suggest this would be the wettest start for a cricket season for many years. This week all the players will be watching the forecast closely, hoping that next Saturday they can actually pick up a bat and have a hit. All of the abandoned two-day senior

Carlton are the latest club to announce the Sunshine Coast as its AFL pre-season training venue in the hope to join the last five premiership teams who won the competition after holding their pre-season camp in the region. Tourism, Sport and Major Events Portfolio Cr Jason O’Pray said it was great to have the Blues join premiers Richmond, Western Bulldogs and Melbourne as clubs confirmed for camps prior to the 2018 season. “Our region seems to have become a winning formula for professional football teams, with the last five AFL premiership winners all holding pre-season training camps on the Sunshine Coast,” Cr O’Pray said. “The high quality sporting facilities we have in our region, along with great weather

conditions provides a fantastic combination for professional sporting teams to prepare ahead of the start of their competition. “These camps also provide our community with great economic and social benefits by contributing to the Sunshine Coast becoming known as a high-quality sporting destination, and adding to the $440 million per year in economic activity that comes from the sports economy.” Carlton will be on the Coast for one week in mid-December, with details of a community open session still to be confirmed. Along with Carlton, Sunshine Coast will also host pre-season training camps for the 2017 premiers the Richmond Tigers, Western Bulldogs and Melbourne football clubs as they prepare for the 2018 competition. ●

SPORT TODAY

GIRLS SHOW THEY’RE BOXING CLEVER BY RON LANE Move over boys, the girls are back in town. These were my thoughts, when on Saturday evening, I sat ringside to watch the ninth annual Young Guns Amateur Boxing Tournament. Held at Noosa District State High Cooroy, before a crowd of some 500 fans, I sat and watched girls representing some 20 boxing clubs from around the state indulge themselves in, dare I say it, the manly art of self-defence. In what can only be described as some of the best bouts on the program, the young ladies showed us that they possess great skills in this toughest of sports. Sitting next to me, former Australian Olympic boxer Benny Pike remarked as we watched local girl Ella Boot, holder of the 60kg Youth Commonwealth championship, “We could be watching a future Olympian.” Where as many young men consider the three by three minute rounds to be a slugfest, many of the girls gave us a good example of exactly what the sport is all about. In her bout, Ella displayed good footwork and combination punching. Taylah Robinson again boxed well for a points win; snappy punching and good combinations put her in front. It is interesting to note that the few local ladies that were beaten lost on split decisions. Following this sportsmanship shown by all, was a credit to coaches involved. With a program of 38 fights, it was indeed a busy night and happy to relate our three local clubs were involved; NBO under the guidance of Israel Kani, Impact Academy under Mark Evans and the smaller club Noosa Ringside run by Mick Hamilton. Mick’s gym, which is situated in

NOOSA WEATHER FORECAST THURSDAY

Mick Hamilton with daughter Ruby. Tinbeerwah, apart from teaching the manly art also does a lot of good work with small children. Among our locals - Lachie Proctor boxing at 75kg and Taylah Robertson at 51kg (both of Impact) - scored wins as did Jackson Thomas and Keane Welsh NBO. Welsh, who has a total of 13 fights for 11 wins with five KOs, is definitely one to watch. Representing Noosa Ringside, Zane Grogan 64 kg, was unlucky to drop a split decision to Arjun Arop. Despite Zane taking the fight to his opponent, Arop received the nod, however in all honesty, Arop proved very elusive with a long lead that kept his opponent at bay. Also from Ringside, Ruby Hamilton lost on a split decision, but like her gym-mate Zane, Ruby boxed well. Speaking on the night Paul Thompson, member of the Commonwealth Games committee, said: “This type of tournament is a great lead-up for the Australian titles which will work as selection trials for the Games' boxing squad; so all involved should be congratulated.” To organiser Mark Evans and his support team - well done to all. ●

GOOD RESULTS IN FRESHWATER FISHING With the recent freshwater influx, whiting have been more prevalent towards the mouth of the river. Live worms and live yabbies have been the prime baits. The sandbanks near the river mouth have also been the place to target flathead on the run out tide. Three to four inch plastics and shallow running hard bodies have been the lures of choice. The hot and humid afternoons have fired up the jacks for the evening and night fishermen. With the recent rains a lot have pushed down river in the pursuit of small bait fish. Successful locations have been Woods Bays, the back of the Noosa Sound and river mouth rocks. Fresh mullet has been the bait of choice as the oily flesh lets off a lot of scent in the dirtier water. Fishing Woods Bays in the early morning has been rewarding with quality trevally hitting surface lures. Mud crabs are making themselves known throughout the system after recent rains. Get the pots in around the deeper stretches of river that are close to mangroves. Weyba Creek has also been a successful crabbing haunt for quality bucks. Fresh bait like mullet seems to be the main drawcard.

Thursday, 26 October, 2017

On the beaches, the big swells we have had over the last couple of weeks has really created some great gutters and holes. Whiting, bream and dart have been the mainstays but with more gutters and more bait the jew and big tailor will be on the chew. Dedicated night fishermen should see some good results. Flathead have also been in good numbers with plenty of fish also feeding in the gutters. Those lucky enough to get out in a window of fishable weather last weekend have been rewarded with good numbers of good eating snapper on the close reefs. The rain has stirred up the bait in the rivers so the closer reefs like Jew Sholes and Sunshine should be good for some good reef species. With the onset of the warmer currents coming from the north and some better weather conditions the pelagics are sure to be on fire once again. Some of the larger craft made there way to the Hards and the Barwon Banks over the weekend, plenty of outstanding fish were boated with snapper, cod, cobia, sweetlip, hussar and pearl perch just to name a few. In the fresh water, in Lake Macdonald the bass are holding deep with the great

John Naughton with a couple of nice sweetlip. influx of fresh water, fishing blades and jigs is your best. Saratoga have been worth targeting in the upper stretches of both the Yabba and Kingham arms of Lake Borumba. Bass are best targeted closer to the main basin of the dam, and around the timber at the junction. So on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures! ● noosatoday.com.au

DARING PIRATES RISE TO THE TOP BY DAVID ARNOLD The annual general meeting for the Noosa Pirates was upon us yet again, and with it came hope. A crowd not seen at an AGM for as long as I can remember, was on hand to witness the rebirth of the Noosa Pirates. The crew assembled to give the club a new-look in early January, keen for a fresh start to things on and off the ground. While the exterior was shiny and new, the ongoing enigma of whether we could survive in a grade as a solo entity was forever lingering. Players came in dribs and drabs as we struggled early in the preseason desperate for some ray of hope with numbers. New leaders were appointed to try and persuade troops to once again suit up for the good of the cause. Things didn’t look good at the start, we barely had enough players to field two teams, yet here we were aiming for three. A lifeline from a source you wouldn’t call reliable was thrown to the Pirates and many were skeptical. One man showed enough foresight to say 'yes we could do this'. And so began the season of 2017. A new group of Pirates came on board to join tried and trusted players from previous seasons. The young crop of Under 18s - under the guidance of newly-appointed coach Michael Duff - showed enough in a small space of

A Grade - First home game 25 March 2017. time to convince old campaigners that this may in fact be a good thing. Our second string of Pirates - under the tutelage of coach Anthony Zipf - saw many familiar faces prepare for one more season of pillaging. Head Pirate Ron Greentree had to assemble and mould a machine the likes of

which had not been seen before. A perilous task met head on by not only the coach but his new-look band of cutthroats loyal to the very end. Early signs were promising. The Pirates were treading water yet keeping themselves afloat for the time being. Something was missing. On the horizon

came a vessel bringing with it past Pirates thought to be lost forever. From across the Tasman and from the other side of the world they came to answer the call to help their brothers in need. The crew was complete when a young Pirate on his maiden voyage, showed that he has the right stuff to mix it with the big boys. What happened when this juggernaut took off will remain instilled in all Pirates forever. The team that nobody gave a chance and a club crippled to the edge, had risen like a Phoenix from the ashes. Sunshine Coast Gympie rugby league 2017 Division 1 premiers Noosa Pirates. This isn’t a dream, it happened. President Greg Christensen said 'yes' when many around him were saying 'no'. It was said in the closing weeks of the season that we were ticking off the boxes one at a time. To every player that pulled on a Pirate jersey this season we thank you. To the committee that gets things done even when you don’t want to do it, we thank you. To the supporters that came along week in, week out we thank you. This year certainly tested us out. From personal tragedy to on field success we have had it all. And yes we have come out of all this adversity with a sense of pride that cannot and will not - be matched anywhere else. ●

FACES OF THE PIRATES

RON GREENTREE Head Coach Ron Greentree started his involvement in rugby league when as a nineyear-old he commenced his career playing as either a centre or lock in the Brisbane and Innisfail districts. His involvement with the Pirates started in 1995 when he coached the Under 18s, then in 1997 as coach of the Under 19s when they won the premership. Since then he has remained involved with the Pirates. Speaking as Head Coach he said, “I want to get us into a position whereby, we will in one or two years, again have a team back in A Grade”. ●

LEXIE MAWN It was back in the year 2000 that Secretary and Life member Lexie Mawn first became involved in the Pirates club. Educated in Roma, at 17 years of age she experienced her first involvement with the game of rugby league. “Our Roma Cities Gladiators Football Club is the home of the great Darren Lockyer.’’ After several years of country life, she moved to Noosa. For Lexie, her commitment with the Pirates Rugby League Club started when her two sons Nick and Mitch joined the juniors. They played in the juniors, then played Under 18 and Under 20. “They were happy times, the parents were great people, so it was good for both the boys and I. By 2009, they were old enough, so I thought why not keep doing what I liked, so I went into the senior club.” On moving into the seniors, Lexie started helping in whatever way she could. Lexie’s move into the senior club was the period known among some of the old hands as the golden years. ●

GREG CHRISTENSEN President of Pirates Rugby League Club, Greg Christensen, has been a long-time member of Pirates Rugby League Club. During his younger years as a player in the various grades - and in his dealing with club-mates while serving Pirates in an administration capacity - his loyalty and honesty has never been questioned; thus his integrity. For Greg, the year 1995 was one to remember, for it was during this time that he was to meet a lady Rugby League touch footballer named Jaye Wales; the lady who was to become his wife. "Some years ago my wife and her family were involved in the Noosa Nippers so I suppose you could say that we have both been involved in community affairs,” Greg said. As President of Pirates Rugby League Club, Greg's main goal became to reestablish the A Grade team. “Then I want to create an atmosphere of one - the senior club and the juniors all in together. This will do wonders for the family environment.” ●

Tewantin Noosa RSL & Citizens Memorial Club

GREG FURNER Greg was asked in the late 1980s to put his hand up for a seat on the management committee of the Pirates. This he did and in the process spent several years as treasurer; and his commitment and loyalty since then has never wavered. As the Pirates' delegate, for 20 years of service on the Board of the Tewantin Sports Complex, which includes the Pirates facilities, the Council awarded Greg a Certificate of Appreciation for his services; an award well-deserved. Prior to this, in 1998 Greg received his highest award - Life Membership of the Pirates Rugby League Club; the honour which for him, takes pride of place. ●

JUNIORS TAKE TO THE FIELD There are lots of good news stories to share ... in particular receiving the grant from Qld Government and Noosa Council for new lights on Field 1 was one massive highlight for all that were involved in that project. The lights are bigger and brighter than ever and all players love playing Friday night games under them. The NDJRL is extremely grateful to both Government and Council for such a generous boost in funds. Last year, 2016, saw the introduction of Under 6 year olds being involved in the greatest game of all. Boys and girls as young as four have been playing rugby league this year. In a modified game on a smaller field with a reduced number of kids on the field, this allowed so many more kids to get off the lounge and away from screens and out on the paddock. So awesome to watch! The Girls League also went from strength to strength seeing the Under 14s team making it into the finals. Female team numbers are starting to grow and NDJRL hope to field three full teams from Under 14s to Under 18s in 2018. Something that has caused a big buzz around the place is the amalgamation between the Juniors and the Seniors Pirate Clubs. This is a necessary venture to grow rugby league in this region and provide positive pathways for all players. Lastly, NDJRL could not have achieved

Under 7s Pirates team. all of the above success without the generosity and support of their sponsors: - Bendigo Bank and Eumundi Sport & Recreation Club funded the Richie Johnston Mini Mod Carnival. A huge carnival that saw teams come together at Cooroy from as far south as Bribie Island and as far north as Roma and Maryborough. Kennards Hire Noosaville also generously donated all the equipment needed for this carnival. - Davos Tackle World in Noosaville for their generous support and barbecue fundraising opportunities.

- IGA Cooroy and Pomona were brilliant in providing all the grocery goods for barbecues and in the canteen. - Mountain Dew Cooroy for providing all the water needed to keep kids hydrated. - Tewantin Noosa RSL offered up their facilities for functions and support for our events that were held throughout the year. - Anytime Fitness Cooroy provided training facilities for the club's Young Guns, with Tyrepower, Hargraves Real Estate, Suncoast Waterproofing and North Coast Batteries providing much-appreciated funds

Under 8s Pirates team. throughout the year to help the running of the club. NDJRL are looking forward to 2018 already, its going to be a cracking year! ●

Ben was recruited to the all-conquering Melbourne Storm where he played in 2016 in their Under 20s side before succumbing to a shoulder injury midway through the season. A shoulder reconstruction in the off season did nothing to dampen his enthusiasm and when given the opportunity to play back at his beloved Noosa Pirates (a member of the Sunshine Coast Development Squad), he did so with open arms. His maturity for someone so young in years, Ben plays like a seasoned veteran. Respected by all and sundry at the Noosa Pirates, not only was Ben the Division 1 Best and Fairest , he was also co-captain of the Premiership-winning 2017 Noosa Pirates.

Ben Henderson - The sky is the limit for the man affectionately known as Hendo. praise on the player, who although has not been at the club for an overly long time, seems like he has been here all his playing career. Ben’s main attributes are his speed and the ability to find the try line whenever he wants to. Not a rookie by any stretch of the imagination, every year is going to be his last - if you believe what he tells you! However, with two stellar seasons behind him with awards such as Best Back in 2016

Ben Butler is one player to watch next season. to go along with his Best and Fairest award for this season, you would like to think that Ben will continue to play into the future. BEN BUTLER UNDER 18’S BEST AND FAIREST Ben is a home-grown product of the Noosa Pirates, beginning his journey at the tender age of seven years old. He has played all his junior football with the Noosa Pirates, culminating in his first season of Under 18 football in 2017. Still eligible for another season at the

Under 18 level, Ben’s love for the game and his commitment to training sees this young man with a very bright future. It would not surprise anyone involved with the club to see this young man make his debut in senior level in the not too distant future. A quiet individual who lets his playing do the talking, he is well liked and respected by his team-mates. His goal-kicking is just an added bonus to his vast array of skills. ●

12369526-ACM43-17

BEN HAYES DIVISION 2 BEST AND FAIREST Ben is one of those guys that you just love having around the football club. Some would say that he is a bit of a rough diamond, yet a more loyal person to his team-mates and club you would struggle to find. Astute people around the club often heap

With Ben Hayes’ experience in the game he would have no trouble venturing into coaching.

Legends of League.

LEGENDS OF LEAGUE The Legends of League game held in February 2017 saw some of the greatest players in rugby league taking on the might of the mighty Noosa Pirates. The three day extravaganza commenced on the Thursday with a bowls day which took place at the Tewantin Noosa Bowls Club. This gave the public a chance to rub shoulders with the greats of yesteryear. It was a fantastic day of sport for the whole family as the biggest names in rugby league made their way to Tewantin where local legends in the making took on the big boys of league in an All Star game. Legends Robbie O’Davis, Dale Shearer, Cliff Lyons, Petero Civoniceva were among the long list of players that tackled the Noosa All Stars.

Matt Black, Ben Christensen, Darren Lothian, Ben Swan, Peter Schulte and Dean Carroll are just a few of the local legends who made up the All Stars team. Friday evening played host to a gala dinner for 600 people, while Saturday evening saw a crowd of about 4000 people converge on Pirate Park to watch the game between the two teams, which was played in great spirit. The Sunshine Coast Butterflies were the recipients of a donation made to them as well as some youngsters from that organisation who were presented with replica jerseys. A fabulous night was had by all that attended and will take place again in early February 2018. ●

FOCUS ON … Pirates Rugby League

PIRATES HONOUR THEIR TOP GUNS Seaton Reid - 2017 Player of the Year A genuine larrakin, Seaton Reid is blessed with God-given ability. Playing the majority of his rugby league with the Noosa Pirates as a junior, he made the transition to senior level rather hesitantly - often questioning his own ability - to make the grade. 2017 saw the transformation of his playing career. Starting the season in Division 2, Seaton was given the opportunity to play in Division 1 and he grabbed that chance with both hands. Very often playing two games each Saturday showed the level of dedication Seaton brought to the table. He was runner-up in the League’s top points scorer in Division 2 playing six games less in that level than the winner and being only eight points behind in total. His efforts on field saw him reach the pinnacle of team sports being a vital member of the 2017 Premiership side. With new-found respect from his opposition, Seaton is one of those guys who can do it all, and let’s hope he continues to do so for many years to come. Russell Britten - 2017 Pirate of the Year Russell Britten started his career for the Noosa Pirates in 1984 at the tender age of six. Countless representative honours in both his junior and senior years, has earned him the respect of players and spectators alike.

Blake Wilson - an important cog in the team.

Seaton Reid - A more deserving recipient of the Player of the Year would be hard to find. A two-time premiership player in A Grade - as well as playing in many other finals fixtures in both A Grade and Division 2 - Russell’s longevity in the game is something to behold. A serious knee injury In 2014 saw him miss the majority of the season and Russell believed that his career had come to an untimely end. After a comeback in 2015, he was chosen as the Best Player in Division 2 for the league. Russell had the distinct honour of playing in the same team as his oldest son during the 2017 season.

Some 35 years of service to the Noosa Pirates saw him a worthy recipient of the Chris O’Grady Medal as the 2017 Pirate of the Year. Blake Wilson - 2017 Captain of the Under 18s side At just 16 years of age it was a huge achievement for Blake Wilson to be named captain. Just two days before a knockout semifinal clash against Caloundra in Division 1, there was a ruling stating a player must be 17 years of age in order to play senior football.

Russell Britten, left - His actions on the field speak louder than words. Coach Ron Greentree gave Blake the best birthday present ever when he named him in the starting line-up for this all important clash. The youngster scored a hat-trick on debut, helping his team continue on their quest for premiership glory. Blake became an important cog in the team which was rewarded with premiership success in 2017. ●

LIFE OF BRINE

PHIL JARRATT

John John Florence, remembering how to ride Supertubos, Peniche. Picture: WSL

With Russell Smith in Tauranga, remembering Peniche.

PENICHE, PORTUGAL -

THEN AND NOW It’s funny how the world goes round. Here I am in Tauranga, New Zealand, as a guest of the wonderful Tauranga Arts Festival, catching up with a bloke I haven’t seen for 44 years, since we free-camped at a lonely beach in Portugal for weeks on end back in the northern summer of ’73, and Russell Smith says, “I wonder what it’s like in Peniche now.” I pull out my phone and switch on the live stream from the MEO Rip Curl Pro in Peniche, Portugal, where ten foot bombs are exploding close to the shore and thousands of people are lining the beach, screaming for their heroes. Occasionally the camera, in following the arc of the surfer on a left, will pan across the distant rock wall that separates Supertubos from our old camp and the fishing village beyond. “It’s a bit like this,” I say, handing him the phone. Russell shakes his head in wonder, I’m not sure if it’s at the changes “progress” hath wrought in Peniche or because he doesn’t own a smart phone. (It is New Zealand!) Maybe it’s a bit of both. We sip on our Hawke’s Bay pinot gris, contemplate the delicately assembled plates of delicious food on our table at Tauranga’s best restaurant, Macau, and grin at each other as we recall that wonderful, carefree time. Russell was a successful hairdresser who

had established a chain of salons in New Zealand and decided to take a year off and travel across Europe in a campervan with his Dutch-born wife Maria and their tiny daughter Mia. I was a 22-year-old surfing vagabond hitching rides from beach to beach with my mate Neil, both escapees from the gritty newspaper world of Newcastle, Bilbo surfboards under our arms - the legacy of the high summer season spent working in Cornish guesthouses - and very little money in our wallets. If July and August had been the high season for tourists in Cornwall, September and October was high season for surf tourists on the Bay of Biscay, and beyond, along the surf-rich coasts of Spain and Portugal - the season when Atlantic swells gathered force and pounded rocky headlands that stretched into long bays with lined up waves of chilly grey-green water. We were travelling with an Australian couple in a beaten-up campervan. Well, they were travelling in the van, we had a leaky pop-up tent we’d erect nearby in fair weather, or in foul we’d lay it beneath the van and roll out our sleeping bags, carefully avoiding the downward trajectory of the greasy chassis when our hosts got amorous. The relationship was getting a little tense when we first encountered Russell

and Maria at a place called Somo in Spain, and we travelled in convoy through Figuera da Foz and down to Peniche, where we all settled into the dust bowl of a free-camp next to the rock wall and Madam Sirly’s shabby little cafe. He might have been a businessman in New Zealand, but in Europe Russell was a long-haired, bearded hippy with an ironic sense of humour and a laidback attitude to life, both of which he needed as we made lame attempts to hit on his gorgeous blonde wife. We all got along like a house on fire that summer, drinking cheap wine out of plastic bottles, eating grilled sardines at Madam Sirly’s, or around a campfire, surfing the friendly waves beside the rock wall or hiking down the beach to the more challenging beachbreaks in front of the sardine processing factory, from which a river of blood trickled into the ocean and the stench was horrific whenever the wind blew hard offshore. This was the break that would later become famous as Supertubos. And then the money ran out. Russell, Maria and Mia headed south, bound for Seville and ultimately Morocco. Russell bought our boards for ten quid each and we started hitching north, bound for London and winter jobs. We never saw them again. Until I dined with Russell and new wife

Susan last week. “You know, I sold those boards in Agadir for fifty quid each,” he dead-panned as we ordered another bottle of pinot gris in the Macau. “Saw you dumb Aussies coming.” Which takes us back to the Peniche Pro, in which the competitors have had to endure waves about twice as big and powerful as anything we ever encountered on our Bilbos back in the day. As I watched boards being creased in every heat, I wondered what we would have done if a Supertubos monster had creased the Bilbo. We were the only surfers in the camp, and it would have been a long haul back to Biarritz to get a replacement. Anyway, as I write, John Florence is on the charge, his nearest rival Jordy Smith eliminated early. Julian Wilson still has a mathematical chance, but John John could close the door tonight. Wherever we’re eating and drinking in Tauranga tonight, Russell and I will be watching it on my phone. Footnote: Noosa International Film Festival is in full flight this weekend. Don’t miss the special screening of Men of Wood and Foam with live soundtrack performance by the Band of Frequencies, Saturday night at The J. This is a rare treat indeed. Tickets at niff.com.au ●

WILD WOMEN HIT THE TRAIL About 140 brave and intrepid women took to the trails on 15 October for the 50km Wild Women Adventure Race in the beautiful Noosa Hinterland. Spokeswoman Jan Leverton said while the weather didn’t come to the party, the women crossed the finish line beaming after completing a 10km trek to Lake Macdonald, 5km paddle followed by a mountain-bike ride. Then they walked a slackline, shot a shanghai and forded a rainforest creek - nothing was too hard for these Wild Women - and all arrived back in Pomona with a few extra freckles from the mud and the experience of a lifetime. “It was great to see women of all ages competing - the oldest being in her 70th year,” she said. “There were some great family combinations as well. Most of the competitors were first-timers and they proved that you don’t have to be an elite athlete to do this sort of thing.” First across the line was the experienced team Mountain Designs Wild Women, followed by ThomTam and Giddy-Up Girls rounding out the podium. The event was sponsored by Tourism Noosa, Mountain Designs, Area51, RACV Noosa Resort, Em’s Power Cookies, Skirtsports Australia, Noosa Springs, Venture Cycles, Adventurethon, Buslink Qld and Rapha. ●

SUCCESSFUL NIPPERS DAY Noosa Nippers had a fun and successful day at the recent Rainbow Beach Junior ‘Banjo Memorial’ Carnival with some great results. The weather forecast leading up to the event was dubious, but the day of the carnival was spectacular. The younger Nippers in particular had a fantastic carnival and the experience has increased both their confidence and their taste for surf rescue competition. The older age groups took the day in their stride and enjoyed catching up with old friends as well as participating in the fierce competition. Special mention to Indie Law who made the final round of every single event she was entered in. As always it is our parent volunteers that make days like this possible - many thanks to their constant effort, support and often overlooked contribution. ●

Ready to run.

Michelle jumps for joy on the track.

BETWEEN THE FLAGS

RON LANE

CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF NIPPERS This Friday 27 October, the Noosa Nippers known as the Noosa Heads Junior Activities (now a branch of the official National body, Junior Activities) will celebrate their 50-year anniversary, the club having formed in 1967. These celebrations will be held on Noosa’s Main Beach with a twilight Nippers session from 4pm-5pm followed by the unveiling of the Honour Board. After this, the annual Duck Race and barbecue will be held and the club is hoping that all involved will join in and make it a day to remember. Celebrate and acknowledge the history, achievements and dedication of those who worked to make the Noosa Nippers a reality. For the club, the initial discussions started in the 1965/66 season and the club was founded in 1967. According to the club history, Bob Kneale was principally involved with the formation and others on record were George Salter, Keith and Lola McDonald, Des Hempsell, Heather Murphy, Ron Gower, Ron and Norm Birrell, John Peach and S and D Devantia. Not having an official name or training manual, Kneale decided to use the USA Lifeguard principal of teaching all aspects of beach work but limited water training. The naming of the club was interesting. “As the new Noosa Senior Club emblem was the sea horse,” said Kneale, “and young horses were often referred to as colts, we decided to call our young people the Sea Colts. As a result, in 1967 the Sea Colts emblem was on our first official flag, Noosa noosatoday.com.au

Redcliffe Under 8s-10s. Heads Sea Colts.” The first people to take major positions were Patron H. Franks, President J Greer, Secretary K McDonald and Treasurer G Salter. Down through the years there have many people who have made outstanding contributions to this great club, simply too many to name; administrators, age managers, the mums and dads who literally drove their little ones to the ends of the Earth, thus enabling them to enjoy the life as a little Noosa Nipper. With regard to competition, it is a proud part of the Nipper history that the first

member of the senior club ever to win a gold medal at the Australian Championships in a water event, came through the ranks of the Noosa Nippers. The former Nipper then competing as a cadet in the senior club was Clint Irwin, and he won gold in the board race at North Wollongong. “I always remember it,” he said with a laugh. “It was a rainy day with choppy conditions and it suited me down to the ground.” Current chairperson Sam Smith said, “I am looking forward to having past presidents at the function to help us celebrate this great occasion and thank them

for their years of service.” “On behalf of not only the senior club but also the community at large we thank all involved through the years for their outstanding contribution. Another landmark occasion for the Noosa club was on 20 October this year. On this day Noosa veteran member Steve Mawby - who along with his wife Nikki and friend Lorna plus a support team were responsible for the formation of the Noosa Seahorse Nippers (an organisation dedicated to helping children with special needs) - was the proud recipient of the QBank Everyday Heroes Award. This award, which covers the ‘“Ownership Category’’ was presented in Brisbane at an official function attended by dignitaries. To Steve and his team an award well earned. At Tullebudgera on Saturday, the surf boat fraternity gathered to bid a boaties’ fairwell to boating legend Ronnie Davidson. Little Davo as he was affectionately known, was a gentleman and highly respected official. We convey to his family our utmost respect. The boat carnival that followed had good results for Noosa. Boat sweep David Tomba said “Our Masters crew - the Condors - won on Saturday and again on Sunday and Boys Under 19 novice performed well to finish fourth on both days. The Girls also did well to finish third and fourth - Saturday being the normal carnival course and Sunday the short course events. ●
