MORE TO LOVE The editor’s desk A big, warm, Warwick welcome is being extended this week to visitors to the 2017 Warwick Rodeo and Campdraft. It’s a time of year when the younger set in particular - including many from ‘off the land’ further west - descend on Warwick to let their hair down for a weekend and celebrate life in the bush. But it’s also an opportunity for locals and families to experience the adrenalin rush of rodeo competition and to marvel at the horsemanship of our campdrafters - and the economic benefit of the event to Warwick itself can never be under-estimated. All in all around 30,000 people are expected to have passed through the gates of the Warwick Showgrounds by the end of Sunday. Once again a huge team of volunteers has worked ceaselessly to bring us ‘Australia’s Most Famous’ rodeo and as is the case with any major event it wouldn’t happen without them. Congratulations to those volunteers and to the Warwick Show and Rodeo Society once again in 2017 - and all our very best here at the Free Times to all the rodeo and campdraft competitors from out of town this year - we welcome you to the Rose City. THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT…

MILLION BIRD 'FARM'

WATER THE NEW COUNCIL CASH COW A potential legal stoush is brewing between a group of Granite Belt farmers and the Southern Downs Regional Council over contracts to supply recycled treated water from the Stanthorpe wastewater treatment plant. Seven farmers in the Stanthorpe area have contracts running until 2019 to be supplied with non-potable irrigation water from the Stanthorpe Recycled Water Scheme, which began in 2004. But the council recently called for expressions of interest for potential new users of the recycled water, in what is understood to be part of efforts to increase the financial return from council services to improve the budget bottom line. As well as supplying water to the irrigators - who pay a base annual fee of $4180 plus a consumption charge of $108 per megalitre the Stanthorpe Recycled Water Scheme also supplies water to local sporting groups, the cemetery, the showgrounds and the Stanthorpe State High School’s agriculture program. As it stands the scheme uses 100 per cent of the recycled wastewater from the treatment plant, with the irrigators understood to be fearful the council may tear up their supply contracts if the expressions of interest process brings in new customers prepared to make a better offer for the water. The irrigators’ contracts contain five-yearly renewal options, with the last options exercised in 2014.

The Warwick area has been earmarked by the Queensland Government as a prime location for intensive poultry production, largely due to proximity to metropolitan processing facilities. ●

Christmas behind bars after their applications for release from custody on bail were refused by a magistrate shortly after they were charged. Shannon Angela Williams, 18, and her co-accused, a 16-year-old female juvenile who cannot be named due to her age, appeared before the Toowoomba Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 12 October. They are both charged with assault causing grievous bodily harm and remain in custody until their next court appearance on Tuesday 19 December.●

Water supply contracts to a group of Stanthorpe horticultural producers could be under threat. Granite Belt horticulture sources have told the Free Times the irrigators may consider their legal options if their contracts are threatened, and they have met with the council to discuss their concerns. The Free Times sought comment from a number of the irrigators but they either declined at this time or could not be contacted. Expressions of interest (EOIs) for the Stanthorpe Recycled Water Scheme closed on Monday 9 October, with a council spokeswoman saying the council had “received a number of applicants”. “Council is reviewing these applications and will be presented to council for consideration at the November general council meeting,” the spokeswoman said. The EOIs are one of a number issued by the council in recent months, in what appears to be a thinly-veiled effort to commercialise council services and assets, with the council still on the Queensland Treasury Corporation’s ‘watch list’. ●

A meat chicken hatchery at Allora capable of hatching close to a million birds a year is set to start operating next January. The Brisbane-based Darwalla Group is building the hatchery on Bradfield Road just east of Allora, with the site the cause of local controversy due to being located on the Dalrymple Creek floodplain, and local concerns about the handling of an estimated 7.8 million litres of wastewater annually. Nevertheless the project has already employed six people who are working and being trained in hatchery operation alongside contractors undertaking the construction. The latest Darwalla company newsletter states work is progressing, with construction having commenced on amenities and workshop areas. Underground piping is complete, epoxy flooring is being laid and a water treatment plant is due to arrive on-site this month. “It is very pleasing that after more than 160 days there have not been any lost-time injuries,” the newsletter states. “This is a great testament to the calibre of contractors and staff we have on-site. “The project is on track to have construction completed before Christmas and commissioning completed by the end of January 2018.” Darwalla has several breeding, hatching and feeding facilities in southeast Queensland - including on the Southern Downs - and produces meat or ‘broiler’ chickens for the Queensland and interstate market. At full capacity the Allora hatchery will be capable of hatching an estimated 800,000 chicks a year. Eggs will be incubated for 21 days and hatched day-old chicks will then be

The mother of a 15-year-old girl who was allegedly assaulted by two other teenage girls on a Warwick street a fortnight ago has said her daughter is making strong progress after coming out of an induced coma. The girl was allegedly repeatedly punched and kicked in the head in the early hours of Tuesday 10 October by two teenage females near the corner of Canning and Percy streets, while walking

home from a party. She was flown around 9am on the Tuesday morning to Brisbane’s Princess Alexandra Hospital where she underwent emergency brain surgery before being placed in an induced coma. But some good news was forthcoming in the middle of last week when the girl began squeezing the hands of family members and appeared to be responding to noises. She was also moved from intensive care to a general ward. Her mother told the Free Times

he Warwick Rodeo APRA National Finals Rodeo and Pryde’s EasiFeed Warwick Gold Cup kicked off on Monday, 23 October, with the action starting at 5am. The first round of the Vanderfield Hino Ladies Silver Cup Campdraft was followed by the Canning Downs Black Toyota Campdraft. Rodeo action is set to begin with the first round of the Warwick Rodeo APRA National Finals Rodeo from 6pm tonight, Thursday 26 October, and the remaining rounds tomorrow night, Friday, Saturday evening and on Sunday afternoon. Warwick Show and Rodeo Society spokeswoman Kate Christensen said there would “not be a dull moment throughout the event”. “APRA and Miss Rodeo Australia will be teaming up with Hitchley and Harrow to host the former World Champion Barrel Racer, Fallon Taylor, throughout the event,” Kate said. “Fallon can be seen around the grounds at special events and signing autographs. “Having international guests such as Fallon is the perfect

way to put ‘Australia’s Most Famous Rodeo’ on the world stage. “We cannot put such an action-packed event together without the hard work and dedication of our valued volunteers. “Our Grounds committee has been working day and night to get the grounds and arena ready for the event, and have worked tirelessly to bring out the best of our venue. “Our volunteers go above and beyond, not just in the weeks leading up to the Warwick Rodeo APRA National Finals and Pryde’s EasiFeed Warwick Gold Cup, but throughout the entire year. “It is a labour of love, and we are ever so grateful for their efforts. “These hard working volunteers are the backbone of our organisation, and we couldn’t produce such a spectacular event without them.” Also properly geared up for this year’s rodeo is the newly crowned 2017 Warwick Rodeo Queen, Meghan Stewart. Meg, as she prefers to be called, is going to be flat out this weekend, but she wouldn’t have it any other way. She’s already been busy with visits to local schools and

NEWS NEW POOLS MANAGEMENT SOUGHT

ARSON CHARGE A man has been charged with arson after a Wood Street residence caught on fire in Warwick last Saturday morning, 21 October. The 29-year-old was arrested a short time after fire tore through the residence on the corner of Wood Street and Stewart Avenue, next to Roses Chinese Restaurant, shortly before 9am last Saturday. It is understood the man charged is known to the now-former occupants of the home. He was due to appear in the Warwick Magistrates Court on Wednesday 25 October. Firefighters arrived quickly on the scene but the timber dwelling was well alight and was internally gutted, with the fire crews ensuring the blaze did not spread to neighbouring properties. The occupants of the home were a 55-year-old woman - who had lived in the home for the last seven years - and her son, along with another resident who had been living there temporarily for a few days. That person - who spoke to other local media at the weekend - is understood to have his possessions at another local property, while the mother and her son lost everything in the fire, including their beloved Jack Russell terrier cross ‘Visho’ and a pet bird. The woman’s son told the Free Times his mother was “absolutely shattered and shell-shocked”.

The house next to Roses Chinese Restaurant was gutted internally by last Saturday's blaze. “She had only just left the house to go somewhere and I would have been there too but I’d just got out of hospital,” he said. “We could’ve both been in there when it happened. “I got Visho out of there (earlier this week) - we’ll have him cremated and his ashes put in an urn for Mum. “He wasn’t a dog to us, he was like a human being.” The two are staying with friends in Warwick for the time being and their real estate agent is looking for another property for them with urgency. A Police Media statement issued last Saturday showed initial investigations by the Warwick Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) indicated

the fire was suspicious. Police were also wishing to speak with the drivers and passengers of a beige or gold Honda sedan with NSW registration plates, as well as a white Jeep SUV with black and white personalised number plates which were in the area at the time of the fire. The vehicles were driving in Stewart Avenue between 8.40am and 9am and may have seen something that could assist the investigation. Police would also like anyone who has a dashcam and was driving along Wood Street near its intersection with Albion Street between 8.40am and 9am to contact police. Anyone who can assist is asked to contact the Warwick Police on 07 4660 4430. ●

The Southern Downs Regional Council is calling for expressions of interest (EOIs) for the management of the Stanthorpe Fitness Centre and the Stanthorpe pool, and the Killarney and Allora pools. The EOIs close on Thursday 16 November. The October meeting of the council was held at the Warwick chambers yesterday, Wednesday 25 October. Items to be discussed in the confidential section included a request to name an unidentified park in the council area, the August and September reports from the Warwick Indoor Recreational and Aquatic Centre (WIRAC), alleged unlawful use of land at 50 Oak Street at Tannymorel and the October meeting of the council’s Audit and Risk Management Committee. The Queensland Government has approved nearly $4 million for the construction of a new pipeline from Stanthorpe’s Storm King Dam to the town’s water treatment plant. The funding comes under the government’s Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program. The Southern Downs Regional Council will construct the 8940 metre pipeline from Storm King Dam to the Mount Marley water treatment plant with its grant of $3,939,000. The treatment plant was built in 1954. Also funded under the program is $426,435 for the Goondiwindi Regional Council for the Inglewood Effluent Disposal Project. Local Government Minister Mark Furner said the councils would be given until 30 June 2019 to complete the projects. ●

ACTION AGAINST DRUGS, ALCOHOLISM The Federal Government and the Alcohol and Drug Foundation (ADF) have recently announced a Local Drug Action Team for Southern Downs to help prevent harms from alcohol and other drugs, including crystal methamphetamine or ‘ice’. This community partnership is one of 40 selected in the second round of the Local Drug Action Team (LDAT) program, bringing the total number of LDATs

around Australia to 80. The Granite Belt Drug Action Team will receive an initial $10,000 from the Federal Government, and will be supported by the ADF to develop and deliver community-led action plans. This project will centre on preventing drug use, and will be tailored to the particular needs of the local area. The third round of LDAT applications will open in late 2017, with more opportunities to be part of the program in 2018 and 2019. For more information about the LDAT program, visit www.adf.org.au/ldat or call the ADF’s Media and Stakeholder manager Carmel Green on 0430 948 380. ●

DRONE SAFETY RULES RO APPLY Stronger and clearer safety rules governing the flying of recreational drones have been introduced by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority, in response to community concerns about the safety of drones and the rapid growth in drone numbers. Recreational drones must now never be flown within 5.5 kilometres of noncontrolled aerodromes or helicopter landing sites if it is clear aircraft are operating there. Recreational drones must be flown below 400 feet at all times, kept more than 30 metres from people who are not involved in controlling the drone and only one drone can be flown at a time. WARM RECEPTION FOR IRISH Warwick’s Abbey of the Roses was the stunning backdrop for a visit last Sunday by the President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins. Accompanied by his wife Sabina, President Higgins visited Warwick as part of the final leg of a State Visit to Australia and New Zealand - and caught up with Higgins family descendants not only from the Warwick area but also from across southern Queensland and northern New South Wales at an invited reception at the Abbey. President Higgins has numerous family links to the Warwick area, including to the wider Ryan and Cleary families, and he spoke movingly of the waves of Irish immigration to Warwick and to Australia, and the profound influence of Irish people

on the Australian character. He has been in office since 11 November 2011, and is the Republic of Ireland’s ninth president. By background President Higgins is a politician, poet, sociologist, author and broadcaster, and is a former Irish Government minister and president of the Irish Labour Party. He received more than one million votes at his election in 2011, the highest majority of any Irish presidential candidate in history, and further cemented his popularity when he requested after his election that the Irish Government reduce his salary by 23.5 per cent. TAILOR-MADE FOR LEARNING Goodstart Warwick - Wood Street’s kindergarten program has a strong focus on school readiness and ensuring children have the developmental skills they need to make a strong start to school. The centre’s qualified teachers create individual learning plans for each child, based on their interests and their developmental needs, and use play-based learning to build on their natural curiosity. Nationally, one in five children are starting school with a developmental vulnerability, and unfortunately the children who start behind, tend to stay behind.

There’s strong evidence, however, that high quality early learning halves the chances of this happening, which highlights just how important good kindergarten experiences are.●

Little Rascals Child Care Centre in Killarney provides children with an environment to develop a sense of belonging with the aim for them to become confident and involved learners. The Joey room caters for children from 15 months - three years old. The educators have a strong duty of care to make sure that the children in their care always feel safe and secure. They always speak to the children in a caring manner and ask openended questions to encourage language development. Children are encouraged to try new art and craft experiences. Children’s social and emotional development is a high priority to the centre, and this is enhanced by having a strong positive relationship with the children and their families. The centre offers high quality education and care to children aged from 15 months. The Queensland Government Approved Kindergarten Program is very unique as the centre offers Bush Kindy. The children enjoy weekly sessions in a bush setting. There are no toys or added equipment, just what the land offers and our imaginations. The children have great opportunities to play freely, explore, take risks and connect with their environment. The educators have found that children have made great gains in a number of areas

in the bush setting - oral language, social interactions, resilience, independence, risk taking, observational skills, problem solving, confidence, leadership and gross motor skills. It is also a fantastic way to educate the children about the land and how to take care of it for the future. Bush Kindy also invites opportunities to connect more with the cultural history and engage with Aboriginal culture in a way that is meaningful to the children. The centre also offers a fun-packed school holiday program. The centre seeks out places of interest in our local and surrounding communities and enjoy excursions to these places. The schoolaged children also enjoy cooking, art and craft, making new friends and just chilling out. The centre is currently taking enrolments for 2018. If you think Little Rascals may suit you and your family, then drop in and see our program in action. You can contact us on 4664 1800 or email rascalsk@bigpond.com ●

PRESCHOOL HEADSTART PAYS DIVIDENDS Studies in Australia and internationally show the significant benefits children experience from attending quality early learning that improve their success at school, and even later in life. A recent Australian study found that children who attend a highquality early learning program in the year before school are up to 40 per cent ahead of their peers by the time they reach Year 3. A major UK study has been following the progress of 3000 students through early childhood and schooling from the age of three for the last 13 years. The Effective Pre-School, Primary and Secondary Education (EPPSE) research project is a large scale longitudinal study measuring the positive impacts of preschool education on children’s educational attainment, progress and development through to adulthood. The children in the study have just turned 16 and sat for their General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE). The study found that children who attended quality early learning had better grades in English and maths, and had a higher probability of achieving higher grades up to 12 years after they finished the early learning program. The impact was higher when the children spent two years or more in a quality early learning program. Like previous studies in the US, they also found that attending early learning can help to combat the effects of disadvantage, particularly

for students of low-qualified parents, especially for boys. For this group, if they had experienced a high-quality early learning program, they had better grades in English and maths compared to similar students who had not attended any preschool. These improved school learning outcomes are not just beneficial to the students and their families, there are also far reaching benefits for the whole of society. A well-known US study called the Highscope Perry Pre-school study found that disadvantaged children who participated in preschool education were more likely to complete school, find higher paying jobs and own their own homes, and less likely to be involved in crime by the time they were 40, than children who did not get the extra support. Nobel Laureate economist James Heckman’s analysis of this study shows a 7 per cent to 10 per cent per year return on investment for each of the participants who received preschool education. He developed a compelling graph that shows how investing in early learning provides the highest rate of return, when compared with programs for older children and adults. Heckman says, ‘Our economic future depends on providing the tools for upward mobility and building a highly educated, skilled workforce. Early childhood education is the most efficient way to accomplish these goals’.

All children benefit from early learning, but particularly vulnerable children, who experience multiple adversities of poverty, neglect, domestic violence or live with parents with mental illness or drug and alcohol addictions. These are the children who benefit the most from the stability of a safe early learning environment, who are able to get the support they need to understand and manage their emotions and learn good social skills. In the long run, we all benefit because giving these children at least two days of early learning gives them the best possible chance to succeed at school and means that fewer children will disengage, drop out and become low-skilled workers, unemployed or homeless. And we’ll see fewer children end up in the welfare and justice systems as adults. Involvement in quality early learning is therefore one of the most effective ways to break the cycle of disadvantage that many families struggle with through successive generations. Participating in early learning adds to Australia’s future prosperity by increasing our Gross Domestic Product. Research by Price Waterhouse Coopers found that the participation of vulnerable children in quality early learning would add $13.3 billion to our GDP by 2050. Source - www.everyonebenefits. org.au ●

FLOWER SHOW IN FULL BLOOM The Horticultural Society’s Spring Flower Show was a resounding success. Thank you to all the people that scoured their gardens and brought in entries and kept our stewards and judges busy. Given the atrocious weather we had experienced leading up to the show, we were delighted with the large number and quality of entries. There are some truly talented gardeners in our Warwick area. Once again the number of entries in the rose classes proved the aptness of the title “Rose City”. If you missed coming down this year, put it on your calendar for 2018. With the rain that we have enjoyed recently, I hope you have all been inspired to get your summer vegetable gardens underway. I have planted some Beefsteak and Gross Lisse tomatoes, and I’m looking for some Oxheart plants. Recently, I was given and able to enjoy these varieties from plants that had continued to produce all through winter in a protected garden. I have never tasted such wonderful organically grown tomatoes in my life and the quantity from a limited number of vines was amazing. To be eating quantities of vine ripened tomatoes not grown in a hot house in spring was astounding. The vines were starting to look a little worse for wear, so they were pruned back, and I’m told are now flourishing and flowering ready to produce a crop for the

second year. I have planted watermelons and rockmelons in my new garden beds that have been fallowed through the winter. They should really go well this summer and I am looking forward to enjoying the melons in January. As I said in an earlier column, I am not going away in January 2018, I am going to be at home, so I can enjoy the fruits of my labour! “Warpaint” was the watermelon of choice, as I am reliably informed by a fellow gardener that it is one of the best as he grew it very successfully last year. We’ll see as I have also put that old favourite “Klondike Special” in, so the competition is on. Lettuce, radish, beans, cucumbers, beetroot, zucchini and squash have all yet to find a place, along with capsicum, eggplant

V Lost & Found

and, something I have always wanted to grow and cook, artichokes. Radish is a great crop to grow with children as they are so fast to come up from seed and so quick to mature to a size where they can be pulled, washed and eaten straight from the garden. Put a few seeds in every two weeks and you will have a succession of new plants poking their heads up, and the children will be delighted. My three-year-old grandson has planted watermelons and was down watering them each day, but asked his dad, “where are the melons?“ He expected, in this modern instant age, that the melons would be ready to pick immediately! I have suggested that they plant him some radishes! In the flower garden, the sweet peas are finished and have been removed and the posts and trellis dismantled. I have had an idea for some time for a feature for a garden. In a past life, I have tried to describe it and get it in place in a farm garden but had not been able to adequately share the inspiration so it never eventuated. Lately, I have been better able to share the picture and now have the promise of the old wooden gate needed and help in putting it in place so next year my sweet peas should be able to ramble over it as I have imagined. The snails have had a field day while my back was turned and done some real damage to the hippeastrums. ●

THE SPIN

AIM HIGH: WORLD CHAMPION HORN The chance to hear firsthand the story of Jeff Horn World Champion boxer and perhaps even the possibility of meeting him in person was an opportunity too good to pass up on Friday. When I read that Horn was the guest speaker at the SDRC Mayoral function in Warwick on Friday I worked the phones pretty hard to get myself a lift to Warwick as I am not allowed to drive for a few weeks yet. That in itself was not as easy as I anticipated, and I was surprised that there were not a more sporting tragic like myself keen to attend. You certainly missed a great opportunity if you weren’t there and hats off to the organisers at the SDRC for the foresight in bringing such a relevant motivational speaker and sporting champion to the district. Horn’s story has been well covered, but there were special insights he gave during the course of the luncheon which you miss in TV interviews or press reports. The passion he has for his chosen sport and a self belief that has taken him to the dizzy heights of world champion are enough to inspire anyone in business or in life that if you want something badly enough and work hard enough anything is possible. Success doesn’t come without hard work - Horn does 24 rounds per session and that is three to four hours every day. It was particularly impressive to see how much time Horn had for the large number of school kids that came along to listen to him. He answered questions, posed for untold number of pictures and signed autograph after autograph with a graciousness you don’t necessarily associate with a boxer. A former Phys Ed teacher Horn very tongue in cheek said he rated preparing to face a classroom of kids a tougher assignment than getting ready to take on Manny Pacquiao. His simple message for the kids was “Aim high“. I was fortunate enough to meet the man himself after the event, and he is equally as impressive one on one as he is in the ring. It was a real privilege. - Casey RAIN CAUSES HAVOC AND HEARTBREAK Rain caused havoc across the Southern Downs last weekend, with most sporting events cancelled. After months of hard work it was heartbreak for the Stanthorpe Jockey

Councillor Rod Kelly chats with Wold Champion boxer Jeff Horn. Club on Saturday when rain ruined what promised to be the most successful Stanthorpe Cup meeting in recent memory. A huge crowd had book seating in the marquee and over 250 lunches ordered. A good day’s racing was assured with competitive fields accepting for the meeting. The committee watched the weather forecasts anxiously early last week even ordering additional marquees to ensure the comfort of patrons and the big ring of bookmakers. A perfect day on Friday topped off the condition of the track and everything was pointing towards a bumper day. What a difference 24 hours can make. The rain rolled in during the early hours of Saturday morning and for patrons the day went from Fashions on the Field to fielding the most appropriate outfit even if that included gum boots and of course the obligatory brolly. Stewards inspected the track at 10am as showers persisted. The track was downgraded in racing parlance from a slow seven to a heavy eight but Stewards were confident the track surface was safe. As the rain persisted, stewards and a delegation of riders made several inspections of the track with sections of the

Jeff Horn was King of the Kids on Friday at the Warwick Town Hall. His right got a workout of a different kind signing autographs. track from the 800m to the home turn cause for concern among the jockeys. Stewards still however rated the track to be a safe racing surface despite the continuing rain. After another inspection of the track, jockeys declared they were not satisfied the surface was safe and elected not to ride. Stewards therefore abandoned the meeting. With owners and trainers travelling long distances to the meeting it was a devastating decision; many arriving at the track in time to unload and reload their horses and head home. Club President Chips Brunckhorst said that despite the disappointment the welfare of the jockeys was paramount. “No one wants to see a jockey or horse get injured in a fall.“ Brunckhorst was immediately on the phone to the head of Queensland Country Racing in a bid to secure another race date for the running of the Cup. That possibility will be investigated over coming days. Although it was a lot more like an early winter’s afternoon, rather than an early summer there was a real party atmosphere on the course. Ironically, the rain cleared less than an hour later and many of the patrons stayed on enjoying a punt on the Caulfield Cup and a full complement of southern hospitality. While the day was

not as successful as the club had hoped, the committee are grateful for the support of the crowd. CARRYING THE BATON Three well known Granite Belt identities have been chosen to carry the Commonwealth Games Baton - rewarded for their services to the community and to sport in the district. Steve McEvoy, Angie Sims and Michael Hayes. Granite Belt residents will not get to see the baton in their town with the route taking it through Warwick on its journey to Brisbane. That doesn’t matter to this trio who will be proudly carrying the baton for the whole of the community they have all served so well. The Stanthorpe contingent join a group of Warwick-based residents who have also gained selection. Well done. ANOTHER GLASS CEILING GONE Women’s sport and the participation of women in all levels of sport are growing at an unprecedented rate. This Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival yet another glass ceiling for women has been broken with the appointment by Victorian Racing of a female race-day judge. Natasha Radford takes on one of the most important jobs on the course - it will be Natasha declaring the winners. You will find women in all facets of racing these days. It has become a flagship sport when it comes to the inclusiveness of women, but a female in the judges box for the Melbourne Carnival is a first. Radford has plenty of racing experience working for the late Bart Cummings and Graeme Rogerson. She also did a stint as an equine pool supervisor and has worked hard to secure her dream job in the industry. She says the necessary qualities to be a successful race day judge are a fantastic memory, a sharp mind and a good eye to capture a tight finish by sight. Similar to a race caller, a judge must learn the runners’ names and colours in each race and in much the same way as a caller they record by sight to paper the field as it crosses the line. So if in a couple of weeks you are looking for the last place getter in the Melbourne Cup to finalise your sweep payouts or holding your breath to see what has won in a photo finish you will be relying on the expertise of the eagle-eyed Ms Radford.

never forgotten his home town of Texas even coming home to run the water and support the Texas Terriers in local night game some years ago. His NRL career saw him play for the Sea Eagles, Cowboys and Penrith before a stint in the British Super league. Burns played last season for the Wynnum Manly Sea Gulls in the Q Cup but in 2018 will be back at the Wattles Club as player coach of the A Grade side. Although coach of the side, Burns will play outside five eighth Matt Duggan who will retain the captaincy. It is where he played A Grade 16 years ago and began the journey which has taken him across the world doing what he loves, playing rugby league. There is one thing missing from Burns’ CV and that is a senior premiership something he hopes to rectify with his return to Wattles. The only premiership to come his way was a junior playing for Texas. It is a great boost to local rugby league to have a player of Burns calibre return to his roots and to continue playing and giving something back to the sport. Once it was a path well-trodden by successful players, and unfortunately it is something we do not see enough of in this era. Recently appointed president of Wattles, Glyn Rees said the club’s coaching positions were finalised last weekend, and is thrilled with the appointment of Burns. 2017 A grade coach Gary Lawrence did not seek reappointment. Filling the other coaching roles at the club Shaun Henry under- 18s while Garth Lonergan and Michael Crank continue as player coaches in reserve grade. ENGEL BOWLS A WRONG ’N AT CRICKET Respected English journalist and author of cricket’s bible Wisden, Matthew Engel recently shone a light on the poor state of the game of cricket. He has real fears for the future of the game. Engel says what many cricket lovers in Australia and around the world have been lamenting over in past years. “Everything worthwhile about it (cricket) is being destroyed: its culture that the

freetimes.com.au

umpire’s decision is final; the delicate balance between bat and ball as the game degenerates into a six-hitting contest; and that even more delicate balance between individual and team.“ Engel looked at the state of the game in different countries, highlighting the corruption problems at the top in Asia. Although administrators, politicians, businessmen and bookmakers seem to be doing their best to destroy the game, kids across the sub-continent are still playing the game in streets and alleys. In Britain, he says it is a bottom up problem with village cricket disintegrating in much the same way as we see country cricket across Australia struggling. He takes aim at the ICC which he says is more interested in the accumulation of money; its own enhancement and the supposed expansion of the game than the problems of the game. Also in his sights are those that schedule the games and the involvement of Sky broadcasting in the UK. While much of his article relates directly to cricket in the UK, there are many similarities here in Australia and elsewhere. Engel talks of the Test Matches that still draw crowds, highlighting Tests at Lords, The Oval, Sydney, Adelaide, Melbourne and the Gabba. - It doesn’t matter if you are a member at Lords, in a corporate box at the SCG or one of the Bananas in Pyjamas or the Santas in Bay 13 at the MCG, these games have predictability and tradition. It is a time for friends to catch up, watch the games - share a pint if you are in the UK. If you’re in Australia, it’s probably a beer and a pie. It seems that across the world cricket administrators and often players greedy for that next big T20 have forgotten much of what the game is about and like so many other sports the game at grassroots levels . While he has genuine concerns for the future of the game, Embley says it is not

Stanthorpe Jockey Club President Neil (Chips) Brunckhorst and committee man Stephen Kay were disappointed but philosophical after it was announced jockeys would not ride at Saturday's race meeting.

beyond salvation but like many, feels the problems facing the game will never be resolved by those currently running the game in Dubai. There are many involved in the game or simply cricket lovers across the world who agree with his insightful observations. CUP CHAOS AT CAULFIELD Boom Time shot most punters out of the game in Saturday’s Caulfield Cup and proved a bonanza for bookmakers starting at 50/1. The Cup also saw many Melbourne Cup fancies reassessing their options after less than ordinary performances. My Caulfield Cup fancy Marmelo looked better suited for the Melbourne Cup with an eyecatching run and might be the marmalade on the toast on that special Tuesday in November - trouble is he has firmed to a solid favourite. A very roughly run Cup saw no less than eight jockeys handed suspension of 10 or 12. It will see several senior riders benched for Cox Plate Day and Derby Day as stewards handed out 10 meeting penalties like jelly beans. One jockey who had good reason to stay out of trouble was Hugh Bowman who will be looking to rewrite the history books when he jumps into the saddle on Winx in the Cox Plate on Saturday. Even if you are not a racing enthusiast, make sure you turn on the TV and watch this magnificent athlete Winx attempt to claim her third Cox Plate and win no 22 in a row. There are no certainties in life and definitely not in horse racing, but it seems almost inconceivable that she will get beaten. Fingers crossed for her- not that I think that will matter or be needed. SOUTHERN STARS SHINE The Southern Stars made a statement last Sunday at Alan Border Oval when they took out the first series of the Women’s Ashes series. They now take a two-point lead in the series. Playing in front of a full house in a fully televised game, the Australian women and their Pommie counterparts showcased all that is good about the sport and why we should be encouraging more women’s games. An unbeaten half century from Player of the Match and Australia’s most capped ODI player Alex Blackwell sealed victory for the Southern Stars after an impressive performance in the field. Australian Captain Rachael Haynes won the toss and elected to bowl on a field that looked unrecognisable from 24 hours earlier after persistent heavy rain flooded the entire outfield. In a remarkable effort, ground staff worked from 6pm Saturday to 4.30am the next morning to get the ground fit for play and their efforts were not lost on the players or the sold-out crowd. In a thriller, the girls got home with five balls to spare. ●

TANNY CLASSIC - ROUND THREE The third round of the Tanny Classic is one of only a handful of sports that was not affected by the recent rain. On Friday night, 36 bowlers took up the challenge and hit the greens with lots of laughs and plenty of heckling echoing across the Tannymorel greens. Winners, they say, are grinners and it was Kystal Petersen, Brian Walsh and Ken Armstrong with the biggest grins. The winning team notched up a 23-5 win over George Malone Wayne Petersen and Al Buse. Ken, “the Ole Fox“ was good on the night, showing young gun Wayne Peterson a thing or two about bowls. Filling the runners-up slot was the team of Clayton “the Man“ Frank, Brett Grayson and Mick O’Leary. They had a 20-7 win over Terry Roche, Jason Fritz and Sue Butz. The game between Annie Roche Eli McKinney and Thommo and Jessie Wallace Lyn Coleman and Myrtle finished in a 10-all draw. In other results, Damon Goodwin Quinton Coleman and Mavis Lawardon defeated Jake Brookman Ben Islin and Julie Buse 12-6. Taylor Hoffman and team-mates Ash Coleman and Burt had an 11-9 win over Nathan Brown Lloyd Johnson and Aaron McKinney. Rob Price, Gene Lambert and Wayne Frank won their game against Warren Hoffman, Jim Lamb and Matt Shepherd 10-7. Three rounds into the This Tanny Classic, it is Taylor Hoffman leading with 12 points. Circling are Lyn Coleman Brett Grayson on 11 points. Not far afield Aaron McKinney and Ken Armstrong are sitting on 10 points, and still in the hunt with nine points are Mavis Lawardon, Julie Buse and Krystal Petersen. Great to see young gun Taylor Hoffman leading the field. HEALTHY SCORES Inglewood Sporting Shooters held a centrefire and lever action day on Sunday, and several targets were shot. Heading the scores was Tom Donald with Stephanie and Ray Dudgeon finishing second and third respectively. An impromptu standard 25m Pistol competition was also held. Successful in this event was Iain Bowen who outscored Tom Donald and Peter Solomon. Rochelle Privera deserves an honourable mention for her efforts in almost beating Tom Donald with his own gun - a little more practice and she Privera might just have his measure. This weekend Rimfire Benchrest and Service Pistol will kick noon on Saturday and continuing at 10am on Sunday.
