‘Theft’ claim rocks ballot By Luke Voogt Allegations of encouraging lamb theft have embroiled the campaign of Geelong’s six Animal Justice Party candidates. Posts emerged online this week of the candidates’ media contact Gary Hall appearing to encourage theft on a private social media page. “As far as farmers go ... just march in and take it if its mother is nowhere to be found or it’s obviously suffering already,” Mr Hall posted earlier this year. “Most often it’s the places that are far away from the farmer’s house.” Victorian Farmers Federation Bellarine secretary Fiona

Conroy slammed the posts, which appeared on the Exposing the Animal Justice Party Facebook page. “I think it’s a disgrace,” she said. “It’s beyond comprehension how irresponsible it is to encourage behaviour like that.” But Mr Hall described the posts as a ruse to oust a fake profile and said no party member would steal livestock. “We thought a lady was infiltrating our group - I was, basically, lining her up.” The Victorian Farmers Federation had recorded cases of livestock thefts in the Geelong area, Ms Conroy said.

In Brief Murder ’witnessed’ A witness allegedly saw Karl Michael Hague murder 16-year-old Ricky Balcombe in Geelong’s mall 22 years ago, a court has heard. Justice Lex Lasry heard at a bail hearing on Thursday that the witness had been too scared to come forward against the now 44-year-old Mr Hague, ahead of murder trial.

Police praise for punters as 13,000 colour the cup By Luke Voogt Police have praised Geelong Cup revellers for their behaviour after making only four arrests in an estimated crowd of 13,000. Officers arrested two patrons in relation to intoxication and two men following a minor fight, Acting Inspector Michael Harvey said. “There were a couple of drunken men who got into a scuffle with another man and the matter is being investigated,” he said. “We only had to speak to four people which out of (13,000) is not a bad reflection on the behaviour of the crowd.” Act Insp Harvey ran a command post at Geelong Racecourse throughout the day. He praised race management and the crowd for the behaviour. “Over the years it has improved quite a lot,” he said. “They all seemed to be there to enjoy themselves and enjoy the races.” Geelong Racing Club chief executive officer Daniel Salter said about 13,000 people watched the race. “But it’s a bit too early to finalise that information. It’s certainly the highest in my time in the past four or five years.” Victorian Racing Minister Martin Pakula attended the cup to announce $1 million for a new sand training track and irrigation system. “Hopefully that’s going in before Christmas,“ Mr Salter said.
Surf Coast’s council wants to squeeze more housing into an residential development that residents widely opposed in the first place. Councillors this week voted to seek a planning amendment allowing 283 more allotments than included in council’s publicly exhibited draft plan for Spring Creek.

“It’s a big boost to all the local trainers in and around Geelong.” Vengeur Masque took out this year’s cup with one punter reportedly winning $80,000. Geelong twins Alannah and Taylah Matchett also had wins, albeit the smaller sum of $100 each, thanks to a bilingual connection. “My sister and I both picked the winner,” Alannah said. “It was a French name and we’re both learning French.” The 18-year-olds attended the cup for the first time after just finishing year 12. “It was an awesome atmosphere and I’d love to go again,” Alannah said.

Double Take
‘OFFENSIVE’: Sarah Henderson reacts to Tim Watts’ appeal for her to “just shut up for two seconds“.
MP told to ‘shut up’ in TV debate A Labor MP has apologised for urging Sarah Henderson to “shut up for two seconds” on national TV. Ms Henderson, the Liberals’ Member for Corangamite, said she accepted Tim Watts’ apology for the live Sky TV incident. But she declined to say whether it was sexist, instead describing her federal counterparts’ words as “offensive”. The pair was debating energy policy when Ms Henderson interjected as the Gellibrand MP tried making a point about the last federal election. “Sarah, if you can just shut up for two seconds,” he said. Ms Henderson immediately stopped speaking and turned toward him with an open mouth, apparently shocked. She later retweeted a Coalition Media post that included a video of the exchange and an acknowledgement of Mr Watts’ “classy contribution”.
Ms Henderson told the Indy she was “very surprised” when he told her to shut up. “It was pretty offensive,” she said. “We were participating in a political debate on Sky News, not a Sunday picnic. “Mr Watts was clearly frustrated that Labor’s plan to increase household power bills by $200 a year had been exposed. But this was no reason to tell me to ‘shut up’. “Mr Watts did subsequently apologise which, of course, I accepted.” Mr Watts, whose electorate office is on Geelong Road in Footscray, confirmed to the Indy he had apologised to Ms Henderson. “Yes, I apologised to Sarah after coming off air,“ he said. In 2014 Mr Watts wrote in The Australian about violence against women and its links to “sexist, patriarchal” attitudes among men.
If the Geelong show’s not costly enough already, consider the 33 patrons an extra $76,000 out of pocket this year after their rides and fairy floss. That was the haul from a Sheriff’s Office operation around the showgrounds on Friday after officers used number-plate recognition gear to identify the vehicles of miscreants with outstanding warrants. And, unlike some of those sideshow games, there was an actual winner, with the sheriff nabbing the owners of a combined 186 warrants. Thirteen people paid more than $12,000 on the day to clear up 35 warrants, which isn’t surprising given 22 warrant-dodgers left the show only to find their wheels clamped. Just as well they bought their show bags first! Anyway, judging by the smile on the uniformed bloke in the accompanying picture, at least someone had fun!
COP THAT: A sheriff slaps another welcome-back sticker on the clamped car of a wanted showgoer.
Local Liberal MP Sarah Henderson gave an interesting insight into her etiquette stand-
ards this week. As reported in today’s Indy, she was shocked when Labor counterpart Tim Watts demanded that she “just shut up for two seconds”. Rude, maybe, but Sarah must have heard worse in the rough-and-tumble of politics. So why the offence? Well, the pair was live on national TV, she explained, “not a Sunday picnic”. Hmm. If that’s the sort of exchange she expects on a “Sunday picnic” then put away the rug and basket! Charity begins at home, but for Geelong it sometimes ends up in a Cambodian cow paddock. That’s the aim of Mark Flanders, anyway, in his efforts to put beef between the chopsticks, or maybe that’s milk in the mouths, of impoverished Asian families. The Bell Park farm supplies business manager is trying to raise $5000 to help Cows for Cambodia after seeing its work during a trip to the country, one of the world’s poorest. The charity gives beneficiary families the job of caring for a pregnant cow each, with the reward being ownership of its offspring. Nice idea: give a man a fish and he’ll eat for a day, give a Cambodian family a cow and it’s beef lok lak forever! Mark’s previously put together $3500 to buy Cows for Cambodia an irrigation system, but now wants to help build a training facility. So he’s donating $50 from the sale of every Ancare cattle product purchased from the local Hewitt and Whitty CRT store. Now Double Take’s aware that the Indy’s urban circulation means few readers need an Ancare cattle product but, hey, it would make an interesting talking point in the loungeroom!

Bribes for dodgy truckie licences By Luke Voogt A Geelong instructor accepted cash kickbacks for issuing false certificates to drive heavy trucks, a court has ruled. Victorian County Court judge Elizabeth Gaynor sentenced Michael Harrington, 65, to four months’ imprisonment with 17 months suspended after he pleaded guilty to eight charges. Harrington pleaded guilty to pocketing $28,560 for 25 certificates without conducting any form of training or testing. Between 2006 and 2012 Harrington issued a further 309 certificates of competency knowing the information was false, relating to fees not received of $283,500, Judge Gaynor found. Judge Gaynor said Harrington’s actions allowed hundreds of people who were not properly accredited to drive “some of the largest and potentially most lethal vehicles”. “I cannot say that any of those persons who achieved false accreditation went out and caused horrendous accidents on the road,” she said. “But the potential for it was very much raised because of your own actions.” Harrington had been in charge of assessors at Linfox’s Anglesea Complex, a contracted VicRoads
provider and registered training organisation for heavy vehicle training. He conducted training at Avalon Airport until August 2009 and then at a Linfox workshop facility in Laverton. In April 2012 investigators from the Linfox Security Group commenced an investigation into Harrington’s activities, unearthing the racket. Harrington admitted to Linfox investigators on 5 July to incorrectly issuing of certificates of competency between 2009 and 2012. He told the investigators he believed he had taken $16,000 for the certificates, which he then repaid, the court heard. VicRoads notified 784 people, who Harrington tested since 2005, to inform them that they required a retest. VicRoads paid for the testing, which Linfox Anglesea Complex reimbursed to the value $90,000. Judge Gaynor said 133 passed the re-test, 144 surrendered their certificate, 267 failed to make an appointment, 117 failed the re-test and 21 failed to attend their appointment. A further 102 did not require a retest for various reasons. The judge described Harrington’s prospects of rehabilitation as excellent.

“I looked up to him my whole life while I was training,” Calum said. Now based in Los Angeles, Calum’s international profile in bodybuilding includes three World Fitness Federation Mr Universe titles.
Corio man Nick Cross faces several charges after he allegedly threatened people with a gun and led police on a car chase through northern Geelong. Police alleged the 30-year-old father of three threatened people known to him with a firearm before leaving in a car from McClelland Street. He allegedly struck three stationary vehicles and committed a number of traffic offences during the pursuit.
Police deployed stop sticks and Mr Cross dumped the car in a reserve near Landale Court before fleeing on foot. Officers deployed OC spray when they arrested him a short time later on Kingsley Drive. Mr Cross appeared in Geelong Magistrates’ Court Tuesday after spending Monday night in hospital under police guard. He was remanded to appear before court on 14 November on weapons and traffic charges.

Vines in the city ‘best local wine’ A little-known vineyard “in the heart of Geelong” has produced the region’s annual wine of the year, organisers have announced. Barwon Banks 2015 Shiraz also won its category at the Geelong Wine Show, thrilling brand owner Tony Pye. He considered the awards vindication of Barwon Bank Vineyard’s siting on a riverside allotment at Newtown. “We’ve been making wine from that vineyard for many years now,” Mr Pye said. “I always thought it was a good site, and this award confirms my belief.” Mr Pye was absent from the presentation night for the first time in 18 years, said a spokesperson for the wine show. “He finally won and wasn’t there, so we all gave him a really big cheer,” the spokesperson said. The spokesperson described the vineyard, sited on heritage-listed property Barwon Bank, as “tiny”. The property had separate owners but Mr Pye had used the vineyard’s grapes “for years” to pro-
duces Barwon Banks wines, the spokesperson said. Oakdene Wines was the show’s other big winner, claiming trophies for best chardonnay, pinot noir and most-successful exhibitor. Terindah Estate won the ‘best other wine’ category for its Single Vineyard Rose. This year’s show fielded 190 entries from 38 local wineries, “making it one of the most eagerly contested wine shows in recent years”, the spokesperson said. The 19 gold, 31 silver and 57 bronze medals awarded to exhibitors reflected the “a very high strike rate” of the “exceptional vintage conditions experienced in Geelong over the past few years”, chief judge Robert Paul said. Pinot noirs had the most entries, with 52 for seven golds, while shiraz accounted for 42 and five respectively. The show also inducted Ken and Joy Campbell into Geelong Wine Associations’ Hall of Fame in recognition of their contributions since helping re-establish the industry locally in the 1960s.
From page 1 “It’s trespassing, it’s breaching the farmer’s biosecurity and it’s theft,” she said. “Farmers don’t know if they’re people who mean well or if they have malicious intent and they intend to steal stock.” Often ewes left lambs by themselves after suckling to graze, before returning, Ms Conroy said. “Just because it’s sitting there by itself doesn’t mean it’s abandoned by its mother,” she said. Thieves could introduce diseases from one flock to another, she said. “Please contact the farmer. You can cause a lot of distress to animals if you go taking calves and lambs from farms.” But Mr Hall, who is in charge of the party’s local social media, described suggestions that members would steal sheep as “ridiculous”. “We’re vegan, what would we even do with sheep?” he said. He said he posted the comments to weed out a fake profile on the party’s Western Victoria Campaign Group page. “I knew she was watching because we talking about the issue of 15 million lambs dying in Australia each year,” he said. Mr Hall deleted the comments shortly after, but not before a member of the Geelong farming community screenshotted them. He accused the Exposing the Animal Justice Party page of attempting to sabotage the party’s council campaign. “They’ve screenshotted what they wanted,” he said. Fellow party member and former Federal candidate Andy Meddick said Mr Hall acted without the party’s knowledge. “They put up some false information to see if they would take the bait. “They’ve since decided that was not a good idea.” Members of the circus, duck hunting and greyhound communities set up the hate page which posted Mr Hall’s posts, because of protests by the Animal Justice Party, he said.

Trains forced to stop for ‘bio-washes’ after cleaning up roos, sheep
Animal ‘hits’ delaying commuters By Luke Voogt Geelong trains are hitting up to six animals a day causing delays for frustrated passengers. Trains on the Geelong line struck six kangaroos on Tuesday morning delaying some services by approximately 20 minutes, according to a V/ Line spokesperson. The high number of animal strikes in spring forced V/Line to perform “a lot of unscheduled maintenance” and bio washes on trains, according to the organisation’s Twitter account. The highest number of animal strikes involved kangaroos, while sheep accounted for
the second highest. “It’s the nature of an operating railway that animal strikes are a possibility,” a spokesperson said. “V/Line has processes in place to return trains to service as quickly as possible after an incident and minimise the disruption to passengers.” Commuters took to social media on Tuesday after a train hit a kangaroo and required a bio wash, delaying the busy 7.40am peak hour service. “When does it start to become about prevention?” Sam Elliot questioned V/Line. “(I’ve) had the unfortunate experience occur twice now. “I’ve never seen so many around the Wynd-
ham Vale area around dawn! Surely the cost of bio wash needs to be weighed up against fencing.” Others questioned the need for bio washes. “A train has to be withdrawn from service when an animal strike occurs so repairs can be completed and staff can ensure it is safe to operate,” the spokesperson said. After withdrawing the train, V/Line would replace its following services with coaches, reduce the services in length or employ a spare train, they said. “Which can lead to delays while the spare train is moved into position.” V/Line trains have hit approximately 250 ani-
mals on Victorian railways this year to date, the spokesperson said. “The figure is less than this time last year, however, as we are getting into the warmer months we usually see an increase of animal strikes.” The spokesperson reminded farmers of their legal obligations to prevent livestock straying into the rail corridor. “Straying livestock may result in stockowners being issued with fines and livestock impounded,” they said. “Trains can come from either direction at any time and being in the rail environment without proper safety measures is dangerous.”

Online hunt for crash-run driver A possibly injured driver has left another motorist with leg injuries after fleeing a two-car crash at Grovedale, according to social media accounts. Hayley Jane chased the man, who “would have to have injuries” from the Barwarre Road hit-run on Sunday morning, she posted on a police Facebook page. Geelong police said the man was last seen running east toward railroad tracks. “I gave chase but by the time I got through the paddocks to the tracks he was nowhere to be seen,” Hayley Jane posted. Benjamin James Calnin identified himself as the victim with the leg injuries. “Thanks to the ambulance and the witnesses that were extremely helpful and kept me safe this morning,” he posted. “No major injuries. Just the owner of a now very beaten up Nissan X-Trail. “If anyone has any information on the guy that hit me that would be great if you helped out.” Images from the crash scene identified the other vehicle as a dark-coloured Holden Calais, possibly about 10 years old. Both vehicles were write-offs after the smash, police said. Police described the man who fled as Caucasian, wearing a red T-shirt and a black cap. Anyone with any information should phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, police said.

City Hall’s Rima Taylor is “petrified of needles”, but that hasn’t stopped her from donating blood in honour of her late mother. “My mother passed away from bone marrow cancer (in 2010) and one of the things that made her comfortable was pints and pints of blood,” Rima said. “She needed so much of it.” The mother of two faced her fears as part of a City of Greater Geelong team that won the Red
Cross’s 2017 Victorian Councils Challenge. Barwon Health completed a double win for Geelong, taking out this year’s health services prize after being ’first past the post’ with blood donations. Employees from both organisations contributed 353 blood donations, which would save 1059 lives according to the Red Cross. Barwon Health chief executive officer Professor Ruth Salom was proud of her team. “Because of the industry we work in, we are very aware how important the donations from
our staff will be for patients facing their own personal challenges,” she said. City Hall’s Shane Hughan helped co-ordinate his colleagues’ efforts and was delighted with the win. “It was fantastic to see staff from many different departments all come together for such a worthy cause - and, of course, a win.” Donors from the two organisations received a heartfelt thankyou from Billy the Blood Drop when they visited the Geelong Donor Centre on Tuesday.

Pesticides down in water clean-up By Luke Voogt
BETTER NOW: Ava, Stacey and Mia Ciach prepare for Run Geelong. 174263 (Rebecca Hosking)
Sisters on the run after ‘early start’ school friends who are super supportive.” Ava had a condition where two plates in her skull were abnormally fused. In September 2014 she had a total cranial vault remodel at the Royal Children’s Hospital, which took more than nine hours. Surgeons removed, shattered and rebuilt her skull using dissolvable plates and screws, then reattached it. Tests four months ago found Ava had some swelling at the back her eye due to intracranial pressure. “We’re now with a neurologist to see what the plan is with her,” Stacey said. Mia has the same condition Ava did but has yet to require surgery. Run Geelong returns to Eastern Gardens on 19 November to raise money for a new local paediatric rehabilitation centre.
By Luke Voogt Ava and Mia Ciach will take on Run Geelong’s Kids Dash for the first time next month to support sick children following health battles of their own. “I’m happy because I like running,” Ava told the Indy after polishing off some chocolate ice cream. Ava, 8, and Mia, 7, were born prematurely at 30 and 29 weeks respectively. The Geelong West sisters were the event’s child ambassadors in 2013 when it raised money for a special care nursery. Their family had walked in Run Geelong each year since but 2017 would be the first time the girls had been healthy enough to run it, their mum Stacey said. “They love it. Now they get to do it with their
Pesticide detection levels in Barwon Water’s catchments decreased by almost 90 per cent in a decade, according to an environmental group’s report. Detections decreased from 29 in 2007 to three in 2016 according Friends of the Earth’s latest report into Victorian drinking supplies. Barwon Water infrastructure manager Paul Northey credited the reduction to the authority’s monitoring program and “communications protocol” with plantation managers. “The delivery of safe drinking water and protection of catchments remain among Barwon Water’s highest priorities,” he said. “Results over a number of years show our monitoring and risk management program is rigorous and robust.” An independent laboratory, accredited by the National Association of Testing Authorities, conducted about 3000 tests for pesticides and herbicides across Barwon Water’s catchments during 2016/2017, Mr Northey said.
Barwon Water had invested more than $200,000 in 2016/’17 to support environmental programs and activities within its catchment areas, he said. But over the decade the authority’s catchments recorded the second highest level of pesticide detections in Victoria, according to the report. Between 2011 and 2013 three of the highest detections of the MCPA herbicide in Australian water supplies occured in Barwon Water’s Matthews Creek catchments. “All samples have been well below health guideline limits in water supplied to Barwon Water customers, including the low level detections for MCPA detected between 2011 and 2013,” Mr Northey said. Barwon Water was the first Victorian Water authority to implement more “rigorous” pesticide sampling in 2004, the Friends of the Earth report stated. The authority publishes water quality data quarterly and detailed data annually through the drinking water quality report on its website, Mr Northey said.
Teen troubles for Westfield centre A tiny teenager allegedly stole two phones and a wallet from a counter drawer in a Westfield shop, according to Geelong police. The male was about 150cm tall, or less than five feet, police said. He allegedly waited for a staff member to serve customers before stealing the items and running off. Police posted his image on social
media this week, calling for anyone who could identify him to contact Crime Stoppers. The post was one of two this week on incidents at Westfield’s shopping centre in central Geelong. The other post, since removed, was about four youths who are wanted for questioning over a separate theft at the centre.
WANTED: The teenager police want to question.

Barriers to safety appear hard-wired to hinder: MP
RISKY: Richard Riordan with wire rope barriers close to traffic on the Princes Highway. est international research but by Victoria’s own Monash University Accident Research Commission (MUARC). “Barriers are being rolled out on our most high-risk roads, as determined by a panel of experts from the TAC and VicRoads and extensive consultation is being conducted with local
communities and emergency services.” Mr Donnellan’s office cited MUARC research that the barriers reduced “run-off-road and headon crashes” by more than 75 per cent. Countries worldwide, including Sweden, the USA and New Zealand, were installing the barriers, his office said.
Boral back in the clinker business The EPA has given works approval to a plant for grinding imported clinker after Geelong lost 90 jobs making the key cement ingredient at Waurn Ponds. Boral wants to run the facility 24 hours a day, 50 weeks a year, unloading the shipped material with conveyor belts for milling at a site on North Shore’s Walchs Road. Boral needed the works approval because of the “potential for significant environmental impact”, the EPA’s Tim Faragher said. After construction the company would need an EPA licence to begin operating the plant, Mr Faragher said. Noise and dust were two major considerations during the approvals process, which included consultation with residents, he said. “These environmental issues are of particular concern in this region, both to the EPA and the community. “EPA has assessed that Boral’s plant has proposed best practice control measures to prevent impact from dust and noise at its operation. EPA has imposed strict conditions on Boral to have monitoring and management plans in place, and will require that Boral demonstrate the effectiveness of their controls prior to issuing any operational licence.” The plant met recommended separation distances from “sensitive residential receptors” and neighbouring industrial operators, Mr Faraher said. Boral announced in December 2012 that it would cease making clinker at the company’s Blue Circle Southern Cement plant in Waurn Ponds. The decision affected 90 jobs, with most gone by 2014. The company initially blamed the decision on factors including the plant’s high fixed costs and a downturn in demand. But Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson later suggested the former carbon tax was the final straw for the plant, adding “some 18 per cent” to clinker manufacturing costs. A Blue Circle spokesperson confirmed the tax was a factor.

A “risky situation” near Winchelsea is part of an MP’s push for answers on a state-wide rollout of new wire-rope barriers. The barriers on the Princes Highway west of Winchelsea were dangerously placed less than 30 centimetres from the road’s sideline, Richard Riordan told parliament. He demanded that Roads Minister Luke Donnellan explain the methodology behind the $1 billion project. Mr Riordan cited “growing frustration” at the installation of hundreds of kilometres of barriers “in inexplicable locations and in quantities that seem to protect no-one”. In many cases the barriers made roads “more dangerous”, the Member for Polwarth said. “In one very risky situation on the Princes Highway west of Winchelsea, barriers have been installed less than 30cm from the sideline, on a fog prone road, providing no emergency pull over space, on a road that carries many thousands of cars and trucks per day. “Minister, Victorians want to know if this rollout is more than government agency madness, or in fact you can prove providing no safe pull over spaces, and protecting people from grass, is a better priority than fixing crater-size pot holes and killer intersections.” Mr Riordan said motorists, trucking companies and others were contacting him “daily” about the barriers, comparing them to the “enormous waste” of the government’s abandoned East West Link project. Luke Donnellan said he “made no apologies” for the project. “We’re rolling out more than 2000km of flexible safety barriers across Victoria because we know they save lives. “This system is backed up by not only the lat-

Letters Help, ads lack clarity The clarity of some digital job advertisements needs to be questioned. For example, employers could provide basic details such as the business name, postal or email address, a contact person, a phone number, and, of course, a detailed job description. Otherwise I can look for old-fashioned ‘help wanted’ signs locally. Billy Deikos Grovedale
SSM campaign absurd, vote no The family unit of mother, father and children has been the fundamental basis of all communities, tribes, clans and societies since time immemorial. Marriage is basically a civil arrangement, or a public declaration that two people are combining as a social unit for the purpose of propagating the human race. Other considerations might include cementing family, business or strategic alliances. In all cultures marriage has only been between men and women, sometimes between one man and many women, which is polygyny, or less frequently between one woman and many men, which is polyandry. Although conducive to stable relationships and personal fulfilment, historically love is not an essential pre-condition for marriage and might have little to do with it other than as an aid to partner-finding. While religions have embraced and celebrated marriage, community rather than faith is the prime stakeholder. In an increasingly self-centred, value-lacking and virtue-rejecting society, the aggressive campaign by some homosexuals and their supporters denigrating those who uphold traditional values was to be expected. However they fail to recognise the absurdity of a position whereby, on the one hand, they stridently demand to know what their ‘marriage’ has to do with anyone else then, on the other, demand public recognition for it! By all means allow civil union and facilitate equality of outcomes for these couples but leave marriage alone! Vote ‘no’. Peter Mackinlay Geelong

The fallout will impose complicated questions regarding our liberty of conscience and many will not support what is to them a Biblically immoral arrangement. The teaching of the Safe Schools program, if it becomes law, will be compulsory in government schools, again raising issues about the extent of its content. Bad decisions foster conflict and remove certainty in society. What sort of society will our children inherit? The mood of protest and rebellion against the established order, evident in all teaching from university to kindergartens, will take us from being a country that has benefited from Judeo Christian values and the certainties of the Bible to selfish demands for personal satisfaction, whatever the cost. Pastor Frank Lowry Aberdeen Street Baptist Church
Church mouses The silence of the Christian churches in the samesex marriage debate is hard to understand. Where are the church leaders in their defence of the ‘no’ case? It’s about time traditional family supporters stood up and were counted. Alan Barron Grovedale
All symbolism, no reality
The folly of transgenderism, where a person denies who they are for a dream of who they desire to be, has led to further problems for society. The request of Hannah Mouncey, a muscular, 190cm, 100kg athlete, to play in the AFLW league is one of the latest questions. The ridiculous nature of the request would be seen in the line-up of boots in the change rooms. Overseas, athletic records are being broken by new transgender participants, effectively denying the worthy achievements of normal binary-rated athletes. One mistaken idea will lead to more problems, often without a solution. This will also be the case if same-sex marriage is adopted as law.
In last week’s Geelong Indy Letters, Vicky Grosser commented on her discussion with Corrina Eccles, saying Ms Eccles wanted Australia Day changed. If Ms Grosser had spoken to an Aboriginal person who didn’t want Australia Day changed, would she have felt compelled to report that as well? Identity politics and ‘reconciliation’ seem to be increasingly dividing us by race and ignoring the real problems affecting so many Aboriginal communities. As Alice Springs town councillor Jacinta Nampijinpa Price said: “Why aren’t these people (activists) as concerned about the Aboriginal

Australians united on their day Vicky Grosser should know that the vast majority of people, including Aboriginals, do not want Australia Day changed. Australia’s history might not be perfect but European settlers grew and progressed our country to what it is today, and Aboriginals have progressed with us. Talking to Geelong’s council should not achieve anything because it does not have the authorisation for changing the day, although I am aware that some Melbourne councils are not recognising Australia Day. Councils are in place to look after their ratepayers, which does not include trying to change things that are the responsibility of Federal Government. Jenny Hasler Highton
Three times wrong on CO2 The argument of Jukka Tuisku (Letters, 20 October), that CO2 keeping us warm proves that its logarithmic impact is irrelevant, failed on several counts. First, he ignored that CO2 is a minor ingredient of an atmosphere in which water vapour and clouds are the major component. As such, he ignored the elephant in the clouds when he said that “without CO2’s greenhouse gas properties Earth’s average temperature would be about minus 18C”. He also ignored natural climate variability, especially the various oceanic oscillations, which have major effects on temperature and no connection with greenhouse gases. Second, there is no long-term correlation between CO2 and Earth’s temperature. We’ve had ice ages with CO2 at 4000ppm. Even the last century shows no precise correla-
Email: editorial@geelongindependent.com.au 78 Moorabool St, Geelong, 3220 Fax: 5249 6799 tion between a steadily rising CO2 and rising or declining temperature. Third, the only accurate correlation we have between CO2 and temperature comes from polar ice cores, which show CO2 following, not preceding, the rise and fall of temperature. The great environmentalist James Lovelock, who was no climate activist, said: “So let us keep our cool as the Earth gently warms, and even enjoy it when we can.” Tim Saclier Leopold
Hope and change in debate What a revelation that our Federal Government has acknowledged that our CO2 emissions have little to no relevance to climate change. Now we are talking about developing new energy. What change has come over the nation to at last realise the minority’s headway in killing off discussion of CO2 affecting climate changes. I sincerely hope for a few more changes to prevent loss of revenue for investors in our coal-fired electricity. The loss of the Hazelwood power station must be reviewed. The Victorian Labor Government must review new practices for delivering clean emissions from the state’s old system of electrical generation. Thomas T S Watson Bell Post Hill
Fear cold, not warmth It was ice, not global warming, that killed and entombed millions of mammoths and woolly rhinos in Siberia and Alaska. It was unrelenting cold and then ice, not global warming, that forced the Vikings out of Greenland. It was bitter winters, not heatwaves, that finally defeated the armies of Napoleon and Hitler in Russia. George Washington’s army also suffered from an unusually bitter winter at Valley Forge in 1778, in the depths of the Little Ice Age. Snowy blizzards periodically kill more cattle than heatwaves in Colorado, South Dakota and Texas. When the Tambora volcano exploded in 1816 it spewed massive volumes of ash and greenhouse gases including carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. There was no global warming from the greenhouse gases but the heat-blocking ash-filled atmosphere and a quiet Sun caused the so-called “year without a summer” when failed crops and famine stalked Europe, Asia and America. Every major geological era has ended with massive volcanism on land and under the seas. Molten lava heats the seas and eruptions on land fill the atmosphere with dust that blocks incoming solar energy. There is rapid evaporation from the warm seas followed by rapid condensation in the cold, dark atmosphere. This process dumps massive snowfalls that become ice sheets on land, starting a new ice age and bringing the extinction of many species. It is lethal global cooling we need to fear, not life-sustaining global warming. Viv Forbes Washpool, Queensland

FINALLY FRIDAY
Geelong gets a heads-up on prize By Luke Voogt The Bald Archy has come to Geelong for the first time to the delight of local five-time finalist Kristen Wiadrowski. “I’m definitely excited it’s come to Geelong and I think it’s a bit of an up yours to Melbourne,” she said. The satirical portrait competition came to the National Wool Museum five days before its more serious namesake arrived in Geelong - a fact not lost on the Newtown mother-of-two. “They definitely planned that to piggyback off the Archibald Prize so that’s some clever marketing by the wool museum,” the 34-year-old said. Kristen’s latest shortlisted entry pokes fun at Nick Xenophon’s concern with cyber-security and Australia’s short-lived obsession with Pokemon Go. “It’s definitely the one I’m least happy with - it’s the one I’ve spent the least amount time on.” Her other entries include then Prime Minister Julia Gillard, or ‘Jules’, updating her profile picture or Clive Palmer twerking for votes. But while Kristen’s Archy paintings were lighthearted, each was full subtle hidden meanings, she said. “If people glanced at that they would just think ‘oh that’s just Clive Palmer twerking’. But there’s always a second meaning there if you dig a bit deeper.” Kristen said the satirical competition was a chance to have a voice. “Being a girl I think we’re underrepresented in politics. It’s good to have a say even if it’s from the sidelines.” She admits she entered the Archibald Prize in 2015 with her portrait of Wouter De Backer, better known as Gotye. “I’m a traitor - I’ve gone both ways. I’m friends with one of (Gotye’s) bandmates.”
But she preferred to avoid all the “politics” associated with the judging of the Archibald, she said. “A lot of it has to do with the artist’s name and their subject. It doesn’t necessarily matter how good the painting is.” The Bald Archy was all about fun “instead of making it all political,” she said. “You don’t have to be the world’s best painter you just have to have an idea and put it out there.” Kristen moved to Geelong 10 years ago to study an Advanced Diploma of Visual Arts. Soon after she got a job at Geelong Gallery. “You always hear about the starving artist,” she said. “I’m not. I’ve always had a day job and done art on the side.” Kristen’s portrait had been on tour with the Bald Archy since February and she was amused to see it in the background of an ABC news snippet covering the launch. “I got a real kick out of it,” she said. Kristen said elderly art enthusiasts loved the Bald Archy despite its sometimes “offensive“ content. “It’s always the oldies who go to the exhibition which really cracks me up.” But the Bald Archy also appealed to younger people and those “not normally interested in art”, she said. The exhibition visited towns across Australia like Temora and Swanpool and, now, Geelong. Kristen invited locals to the National Wool Museum to check out the Bald Archy before it leaves on 11 November. “I’ll be there this Saturday night answering questions or whatever,” she said.

FINALLY FRIDAY FRENCH TRIBUTE: Michaela Burger as Edith Piaf with Greg Wain. (Brendan Dennis)
In the pink for feisty Piaf By Luke Voogt Adelaide songstress Michaela Burger cried when she first heard the music of Edith Piaf, beginning a lifelong obsession with the French icon. Burger was on exchange in France at age 17 when her host mother handed her a boxset of Piaf ’s greatest hits. “I thought ‘why am I crying when I didn’t even understand what she’s talking about?’” she told the Indy. But when she read up on the legendary singer she discovered why. “She gave her whole being to her music and audience,” she said.

Burger will perform as Piaf for the first time in Geelong after seasons at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Leicester Square Theatre and Adelaide Cabaret Festival. “It’s always nice being in a new city,” the 38-year-old said. “We’re looking forward to coming to Geelong.” She sings alongside guitarist Greg Wain who helped inspire the show in 2012. The pair met in Adelaide while busking and Burger asked Wain for guitar lessons. “By the second lesson we were talking about how obsessed with Edith Piaf we were,” she said. They spent months researching Piaf before putting together a tribute to her life.
“We, basically, researched all of her biographies that we knew,” Burger said. “From that we gathered what we thought best told her story. We wanted to tell her story as a human, not just a performer.” They toured for the next four years with the show between their other gigs. Exposing Edith comes to the Potato Shed, Drysdale, on 29 October. Burger tells the story Edith’s life, loves and losses through the songs that shot her to stardom including La Vie en Rose, Milord and Non. She punctuates the songs with tales in the guise of a multitude characters from half-sister Momone and Piaf ’s lovers to the singer herself.
Art fight for cure By Luke Voogt Rockhampton’s Marlene Millard returns to her birthplace of Geelong next month for an exhibition dedicated to family members who lost their lives to cancer. Millard will display decades’ worth of pastel paintings at Aireys Inlet, including The Daffodils, dedicated to her sister who died of cancer in 2000. “Daffodils were Joanne’s favorite flower,” she said. “Joanne and I - right from when we were little children - used to garden and grow things together.” The 55-year-old also lost her father to cancer in 2012 and she painted landscapes of the Otways in his honour. “He loved Airey’s Inlet,” she said. “I think that he just loved the history.” Millard’s descendants Thomas Pearse and Robert McConachy rebuilt the Bark Hut in the mid-1800s, while another ancestor John Wesley Anderson built Mountain House in 1900. The Ash Wednesday fires destroyed both historic houses but locals restored the Bark Hut and renovated it in 2004. Millard joins cousin and fellow artist Jan Harris for the exhibition, who lost both parents to cancer. “Unfortunately there appears to be a strong problem with cancer in (our families),” she said. The Geelong-born Millard grew up in Modewarre and lived in Herne Hill before moving to Queensland. She won her first competition at the Royal Geelong Show in the fine arts category in 1980. “I still have one sister still in Geelong,” she said. “My father was on the Royal Geelong Show committee. My parents were very avid supporters of the Cats - very one-eyed of course.” The exhibition runs at Aireys Pub from 18 to 26 November. The two artists will donate 10 per cent of proceeds to Fight Cancer Foundation.

WILD strides in sharing power I recently had the sad privilege to speak at the Geelong Women in Local Democracy (WILD) Women Sharing Power event held at the Geelong Regional Library. I say sad because I was speaking in place of the late Fiona Richardson, former Minister for Women and Minister for Prevention of Family Violence in the Andrews Government. Fiona championed the prevention of violence against women and children. And nobody fought harder for gender equality in all facets of community life than Fiona; she will be sadly missed. Geelong Women in Local Democracy (WILD) was formed in 2012 to promote the key principles of the Victorian Local Government Women’s Charter - gender equity, diversity and active citizenship - and to specifically work towards increasing representation of women on the City of Greater Geelong Council. I commend WILD and the Victorian Local Government Association for their dedication and hard work to encourage women to run for local government. We understand the significant positive impact associated with increasing women’s leadership and participation in all aspects of our community. Gender equality in public and political life fosters economic growth and contributes to strengthening overall social and community cohesiveness. It is also an imperative in the prevention of family violence. Ensuring women are leaders in local government is especially important. Local government representatives should reflect the diversity of the community they serve. Having a wide range of perspectives in decision-making not only strengthens local governance but also builds cohesive communities. Safe and Strong, Victoria’s first ever Gender Equality Strategy, commits to increasing women’s
Christine with the late Minister Fiona Richardson, Minister for Sport and elite sportswomen at the launch of Change Our Game at Vic Parliament. 174325 leadership and participation in public life as a key component of achieving gender equality. A key target is that by 2025, 50 per cent of councillors and mayors will be women. In local government administration, there is also work to be done. While women make up 55 per cent of all local government employees, they make up just 16.5 per cent of CEO positions and 34 per cent of director positions. However, the most effective gender equality efforts engage people across the many different environments where people live, work, learn, socialise and play. Also a consistent focus in our
institutions, workplaces, not-for-profit and community organisations, local councils and sporting associations - will have the strongest potential reach across society, and achieve the greatest impact on gender equality. Local government need ensure that community infrastructure, land use planning and design, sports and recreation facilities and service delivery all reduce gender inequalities. Building the numbers and diversity of female candidates can only help this. Events, like WILD’s Women Sharing Power evening, provide an opportunity to learn about
what councillors do, and how to stand for election. The workshops that WILD have been running recently are a great example of providing women with the skills, and the mentoring, they need to be candidates. We all have a role to play in shaping attitudes and transforming behaviours to improve gender equality. Only with broad, ongoing community support will it be possible to create lasting change. We have come a long way in improving and promoting gender equality, however there is still much to do.

SPORT Win snatched from Cats, with result on the horizon LOCAL CRICKET Jim Timberlake Geelong Cricket Club suffered a heart-wrenching defeat at the hands of Carlton last Saturday, in a game they will feel was snatched from them at the very last minute. Batting first, the Cats racked up an imposing total of 6/261, the bulk of those runs coming from a superb partnership of 150 between Tim Ludeman and skipper Eamonn Vines. Ludeman showed his class with 86 from 99 balls, while Vines continued to press for higher honours with a masterful 102. Angus Boyd smashed a quickfire 37 to ensure the earlier work was not wasted. In reply, Geelong started brightly, with Boyd starring with the ball to claim 5/49 from his 10 overs. At 7/166, it appeared the Cats were destined to claim their first points for the season. But from there, everything went pear shaped as the strong Carlton lower order pulled off a remarkable comeback, after at one stage needing 90 runs off 60 balls. For Carlton the star was Xavier Crone who bludgeoned 53 from just 27 balls, including five
sixes, to snatch the win and leave Geelong wondering just what went wrong. Tomorrow, Geelong host Greenvale in a game they will want to win, if for no other reason than to simply bury the ghosts of last week. In the Geelong Cricket Association match of the round, East Belmont appears to have the upper hand over Geelong City, although any run chase involving Richie Oliver is always very gettable. The Lions didn’t have it all their own way early with their big three batsman all back in the sheds with just 63 runs on the board. But in a pleasing middle-order fightback, Nathan Frye stood up in just his third first XI game to post a timely century, helping his side to 273 at stumps. For the Sharks, Tom Driver toiled hard for 3/56, while Byron Taylor and Adrian Saltalamcchia both picked up two wickets. The first hour tomorrow will be crucial, East Belmont speed duo Dave Lineen and Alex Willerton will look to throw everything at Oliver and Co. early in a bid to gain the ascendancy. For anyone looking to watch a top class battle, be there from the start tomorrow as local cricket
won’t get much better than this. In Division 2, last season’s premier Newcomb and District is yet to win a game this campaign, and with the rampaging Bell Park up next, it’s hard to see that changing this round. The Dino’s travel to Hamlyn Park with a side that on paper looks weaker than last season, while the Dragons have only added to their depth, meaning they should win this comfortably. BELL PARK v Newcomb and District, MARSHALL v St Peter’s, Highton v BELL POST HILL, Torquay v MANIFOLD HEIGHTS. In Division 3, St Albans Breakwater enjoyed a huge upset win over premiership favourite Thomson, after Jake Spalding crafted a beautiful 114 in his sides total of 9/256. In reply, Thomson fought it out bravely on the back of a fantastic 114 to skipper Adam Bliss, but ultimately they fell five runs short of victory That makes this weekend’s one-day game between St Albans Breakwater and Guild-Saints crucial to both sides’ finals chances. Big Bash clash to draw crowds, with plans for return By Luke Voogt The Renegades have urged Geelong to get behind Kardinia Park’s first Big Bash clash to make the game a regular fixture. The club will host the Sydney Sixers in Geelong on 3 January after Australia played Sri Lanka at the stadium in the city’s first T20 international in February, 2016. Renegades chief executive officer Stuart Coventry hoped to “pack out Kardinia Park”, which would have a slightly reduced capacity of 30,000 due to the sight screens. “We’re expecting a big crowd and great sup28 GEELONG INDY Friday, 27 October, 2017
port from the local community,” he said. “We’ve had strong interest in tickets in the last couple of weeks.” About 10,000 people attended a practice match between the Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades in 2015. But the Renegades had an average attendance of 31,000 for their regular Big Bash League matches in 2016. “Given our average attendance and the number of cricket fans in Geelong, seats will be hot property,” Coventry said. “We know we’ll get great support from both the local community and holiday-goers who are
down on the Bellarine Peninsula for summer.” Local youngsters slimed Brad Hogg and Sophie Molineux to celebrate the Kids Day Out theme of the match as the Renegade stars visited Geelong Tuesday. Geelong Big Bash League tickets went on sale that day for the men’s and women’s double header. The Victorian Government, City Hall and the Kardinia Park Stadium Trust teamed up to bring the clash to Geelong. “Success for the club and the league will be a packed house, huge Renegades support and great opportunity for families to enjoy the WBBL and BBL double-header,” Coventry said.
A huge variety takes the bait ON THE BITE Chris Pitman Anglers bagged a huge range of species over the past week, with everything from trout to tuna on the chew. Corio Bay hosted fantastic soft plastic fishing for pike, pinkies and flathead. The area out from St Helens was the most productive, along with the spoil grounds off Limeburner’s Points. Clifton Springs produced some impressive snapper, especially along the Point Richards channel around tide changes. Allan Brow and John Buckis ventured out on Saturday, with John’s rod soon screaming to life under the power of a 7.6kg snapper. Snapper anglers also reported gummy sharks to 5kg as a common bycatch out from Clifton Springs. Nearby, a handy supply of squid was still available in 3m to 4m along the weed beds on the Curlewis Bank. St Leoanrds’ Bourke Street area gave up large numbers of whiting again in some of the best fishing it’s hosted since perhaps Easter. Pippie or tenderised squid worked well in conjunction with running sinker rigs weighted enough to hold bottom in the stronger tides. Whiting of around 38cm were common, with a few larger specimens to 44cm also taken. Queenscliff remained home to monster squid. Bell Reef was a perfect location for land-based anglers, while boaties snagged a few in the deeper water out from the bight. Queenscliff ’s whiting were harder to tempt but the harbour was on fire with snapper to 3kg spread along the main cut. Casting Gulp Turtleback worms in Pumpkinseed worked very well when the tidal flow slowed. Silver trevally were also taken from the harbour, along with the odd squid. Jae Peters spent a few hours chasing bream in the Barwon River estuary over the past week, enjoying great results on fish to 50cm. Using fresh live bait was key to Jae’s success. Down toward the mouth of the system mullet and smaller King George whiting kept anglers entertained. Gummies remained on the bite in 30m out from Barwon Heads, along with the odd snapper to 6kg. Down the coast, Portland had another run of large southern bluefin tuna to more than 100kg. Trolling skirted lures again resulted in numerous hook ups. On the freshwater scene, anglers enjoyed all-time fishing on western district lakes. An ANSA competition on the weekend allowed anglers to fish various lakes in the area, with brown and rainbow trout to 2kg taken on a variety of methods such as Trolling Tassie Devils and fishing Powerbait or mudeyes. Trelly’s Geelong’s Kevin Hunter boated a well-conditioned Chinook salmon on a pilchard fillet fished just out from Potter’s Point at Lake Bullen Merri. Closer to home, Graeme Findlay banked numerous redfin from Wurdee Boluc Reservoir’s margins while casting Pako spoons. Some of his reddies pushed 40cm.
