Twisted Sista’s popularity with its customers has seen it voted the winner of the People’s Choice award. Sam and Martha Di Salvo launched the first Twisted Sista in Fountain Gate Shopping Centre in June 2011. “With Twisted Sista we wanted to create an original and authentic concept best described as a place to indulge the senses,” Ms Di Salvo said. The Twisted Sista idea was to create a unique twist on a modern cafe combined with a gelateria that would have customers instantly wanting more. The couple’s hard work has been recognised over the years with Twisted Sista winning seven Westfield retail excellence awards including the prestigious Best Retailer in Victoria. “Over the years this inspired us to push the boundaries of business to see what we were capable of,” Ms Di Salvo said. “Twisted Sista was born from a vision to create an atmosphere of fun and excitement with a menu based on the freshest ingredients delivered with exceptional personalised service. “We put everything we had into the business and worked harder than ever before. “We soon knew we had created a recipe for success and, with family at the heart of everything we do, we introduced our daughter Josie into the business. “Offering something new and unique in casual dining, the Twisted Sista brand became well recognised and our client base grew faster than we could have imagined. “Josie is now playing a vital role in expanding the brand and taking the

POWERING AHEAD TO SUCCESS TRADES AND CONSTRUCTION Sponsor

Winner Powerplant Project Services Finalists Elite Building Services, Insulgreen Solutions

Hallam electrical contractor Powerplant Project Services has been surging from strength to strength. The firm has major lighting design contracts on some of the state’s largest road projects, its staff list is ever-growing and recently it appointed its inaugural chief executive. Now, to add to the success, Powerplant has taken out Casey Cardinia Business Awards’ highest prize Business of the Year. Powerplant has been involved in “asset relocation and lighting design” for the Thompsons Road upgrade as well as designing lighting for the Monash Freeway between Pakenham and Tullamarine - except the city tunnels. Other projects include street lighting and asset relocation for the Mernda rail extension and highway upgrade in Traralgon. Powerplant’s staff has grown sixfold to more than 50 in the past five years. Last year it added more than 600 projects.

SUCCESS IS DRIVEN BY HAVING THE RIGHT PEOPLE AND HAVING THE RIGHT CULTURE…

Chief executive John Kelso said Powerplant was part of a growth area providing infrastructure and services for utilities - at a time when utilities were downsizing and outsourcing. “It’s an exciting time to come to the business,” Mr Kelso said. “We’re looking also at how to bring in new local talent, such as through traineeships, as a way of regenerating and building up new skills. “Success is driven by having the right people and having the right culture.” Mr Kelso, a former AusNet national services manager with 38 years in the utility sector, crossed to Powerplant because of its culture and the fact that it was “going somewhere”. He pointed to renewable solutions as

a possible new frontier. “Where I came from (in the utilities sector), they were doing quite a bit in trialling the renewables space. “We’re working hard to take these new technologies and to add those to the intelligent infrastructure solutions we give our clients.” Director Greg Plant used to work for Mr Kelso 25 years ago. “We’re looking to develop the business to best serve those infrastructure needs in this (south-east Melbourne) region and across the state. “We’re also considering new opportunities interstate. “But, despite this fantastic growth, we don’t lose sight of what’s important to people in this area.”

The current M1 widening project ranks as one of Powerplant’s biggest jobs, alongside its lighting design for 300 light poles in the recent Tullamarine Freeway widening. “For us it’s a real achievement as a relatively small company to be participating in these larger projects and to have contact with nearly the entire freeway. “We’re little guys who have got to do big things locally.” Other major local projects include Peninsula Link, Sladen Street, Ernst Wanke Road, Northey Road, Casey Fields BMX centre and Bunjil Place. Powerplant also lands electricity-line contracts for new housing estates, particularly in Casey. Mr Plant said the secret to Powerplant’s success comes from “serving our customers well”. “We develop the most economic idea and we deliver what our client needs from it,” he said.

PRESCRIPTION FOR SUCCESS RETAIL Sponsor

Winner Emerald Village Pharmacy Finalists Framing to a T Framers and Designers, Davey Marine

Emerald Village Pharmacy has taken out the award for the region’s top retailer. Emerald Village Pharmacy is a community pharmacy offering a range of pharmaceutical services as well as specialising in beauty and complementary medicines. Customer service is a priority for business owner Louisa Lammers and her team. This dedication to customer service was never more apparent than in November 2015 when the pharmacy was gutted by fire. A blaze caused by an electrical fault took hold in the early hours of the morning on 1 November, gutting the building and destroying most of the stock. Just six days later the pharmacy was back on its feet in the most remarkable circumstances. The CFA was able to save valuable customer files allowing Ms Lammers and her staff to continue a prescription delivery service - crucial to many customers in Emerald and the surrounding district. They also set up a marquee and served customers from a spot on the footpath. At the time Ms Lammers said it was the resilience of her staff that allowed the business to continue operating after such a devastating blow. Quoted in the Pakenham Gazette in 2015, Ms Lammers said: “I’ve got the most amazing staff. In terrible circumstances, they’ve done everything that’s been asked of them. “I love living in Emerald. I’ve always loved it, this just confirms it.”

WE AIM TO ENSURE EACH CUSTOMER RECEIVES PRODUCTS AND ADVICE TO ENCOURAGE A POSITIVE HEALTH OUTCOME…

That professional service and ‘can do’ attitude obviously impressed the judges of this year’s awards. Pharmacy assist Gabby D’Arcy said the Emerald Village Pharmacy took pride in assisting its customers by offering services such as blood pressure

monitoring, medication reviews and a medicine packing service. In 2015 Ms D’Arcy was nominated as a state finalist for the Pharmacy Assistant of the Year Award. “We aim to ensure each customer receives products and advice to

encourage a positive health outcome,” Ms D’Arcy said. “Our staff have vast experience in all areas of health and wellbeing including diabetes, asthma, vitamins, make-up and specialty skin care products.”

RAISE A GLASS FOR CANNIBAL HOSPITALITY Sponsor

Winner Cannibal Creek Vineyard Finalists Elevation at Emerald Restaurant and Bar, Settlers Run Golf and Country Club

Cannibal Creek Vineyard is the winner of this year’s Hospitality award. Husband and wife team Patrick and Kirsten Hardiker have run Cannibal Creek since 1997. The business took a giant step forward when the couple opened a French themed restaurant at Cannibal Creek in March. “For a long time we’ve been planning to do something like this - somewhere where people could sit and enjoy some food with their wine, and where we could showcase other Gippsland produce as well, not just our own,” Kirsten said. “We’ve got a full commercial kitchen, restaurant, and a cellar room downstairs - we hope to use that as another tasting area and a place for foodie workshops,” she said. There’s a deck for the summer time, a fireplace for the cooler months, and a private dining space for family groups or meetings. “The premium wines we make are really fantastic with food,” Kirsten said. “It’s giving that whole experience, I think. “I think people are looking for more these days, too. “They want to be able to go out and have a lunch and make a day of it. “We’ve been beautifying Cannibal Creek, which is our eastern boundary. “People can walk past the boundary and up to the creek. You can spend a day or half a day with the family.” The move is all about tapping into wine tourism. “The wine industry is quite challenging, it’s been very competitive,” Kirsten said. “It’s taken us a while to get to the

point where we were able to make this transition.” She said the vineyard was becoming a point where friends and family from Gippsland, Melbourne, the Peninsula, and Yarra Valley could meet in the middle. “We’re only a couple of kilometres

from the highway and we’re less than an hour from Melbourne,” she said. “We’re quite accessible. “It’s right at the beginning of Gippsland. It’s a really good starting point for people. “We want to build on our information

for other things to do. “We have a selection of wines from other vineyards in Gippsland, so we’re drawing people down to these other venues as well. “The more we offer in the area, it will become a destination.”

Kirsten and Patrick serve a range of their own wines in the restaurant.

HORTICULTURE SERVICES HELP OTHERS TO GROW AND THRIVE The winner of this year’s Manufacturing award is Powerplants Australia. Powerplants offers a wide variety of products and service to the horticultural industry, manufacturing its technologies and accessories at its Hallam headquarters. Director Carl van Loon said Powerplants Australia provided customers with innovative tailored solutions allowing owners and managers to “focus on growing your business, while we take care of all your service and maintenance requirements”. Powerplants Australia was born in 1994. “I was working for my dad and we

had a plant nursery,” Mr van Loon said. “I used to do all this technical work for him - climate control systems and all that sort of stuff. “I was self-taught. “Whenever I was buying things, we were buying greenhouse equipment from chicken shed manufacturers. “There wasn’t a proper horticulture industry.

“You were buying stuff from people who didn’t know anything about plants. “I realised there was a niche for it and started the business with a couple of family members. “We gradually built it up from there. I had no intention whatsoever of getting into the horticulture industry. “I was going to be an engineer. Somehow it drew me back.”

Today Powerplants Australia employs about 30 people and food production is the major part of the business. “We design and install and service systems for growing food - tomatoes, capsicums, cucumbers, eggplants, lettuce, leafy greens, herbs - basically anything that grows in the ground or grows in greenhouses, that’s our main target now. “People seem to be moving towards better and better quality and that’s what we’re all about - helping growers to produce really high quality crops without pesticides, without fungicides and sprays by giving the plants a really good climate.” Powerplants’ customers include last year’s Casey Cardinia Business of the Year Australian Fresh Leaf Herbs.

DENTIST KNOWS THE GREEN DRILL ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY Sponsor

Winner Beaconsfield Dental Finalist Ten-Rose International Simmental Fleckvieh

Beaconsfield Dental has been recognised as the region’s most sustainable business for the third year in a row. The dental practice has dominated the Environmental Sustainability category since 2015, also winning in 2016 and now 2017. Beaconsfield Dental was established in 1988 by Dr Robert Panjkov. Mr Panjkov said the practice was proud of its green credentials. Beaconsfield Dental has 60 solar panels which are capable of generating up to 100 KWH in one day. Double glazing, full insulation, solar hot water, LED lighting, water tanks for the garden and toilet flush are standard features at Beaconsfield Dental. The garden has more than 500 indigenous plants to complement the surrounding Akoonah Park. Mr Panjkov said he had solar panels at his family home for years and so it was a natural progression to approach

business with an environmental focus from the beginning. “We have solar hot water and 60 solar panels which have a wireless device that displays the electricity generated, carbon dioxide and money saved. “Patients are regularly shown the wireless device to educate them as it is kept in one of the treatment rooms. “The design of the building includes low-allergy paint, double glazing, LED lighting and wall, ceiling and floor insulation. “The water tanks have a capacity of 10,000 litres which are fed into the toilets and the 500-plant indigenous garden drip-sprinkler system.

“I’m also thinking about getting an electric charger port for electric cars in the car park. “We currently have about four or five water tanks and I’d like to double that and maybe get a filtration system so that we could be self-sufficient from the water supply. “We’ve encouraged customers to take it upon themselves to think more about the environment, too.” Beaconsfield Dental also uses biodegradable dental products and environmentally friendly cleaning and kitchen supplies, including a compost bin. Mr Panjkov said staff were educated

about recycling paper and encouraged to reduce printing by viewing documents on the computer. “We do it to be self-sufficient. Solar electricity generates a lot of power and it saves money. “It also gives you that warm and fuzzy feeling that you’re doing the right thing. It’s nice to leave a legacy,” he said. “The dentist isn’t everybody’s favourite thing, so we try to make it a fun place and to make people feel comfortable. “We’re always learning things about the new technological advances in renewable energy.”

TRAVEL AGENTS HAVE PACKED A LOT IN The winner of the Tourism award for the second year in a row is Safir Tours. Nayaz Noor and Suchitra Reddy are the CEO and director respectively of the Berwick based Safir Tours and what they’ve accomplished in just four-and-ahalf years in Australia is impressive. Between them, they have more than 60 years of experience in the travel industry having both spent over three decades with tour operators and travel agencies in the United States, the Middle East and India. But the latest chapter of their story has brought them to Australia - where they had no family and few connections until a few short years ago. But the challenge of setting up their business in a completely new evironment is one they’ve truly excelled at. Safir Tours is a destination management company that customises all its itineraries based on the requirements of its clients. Born in India, Nayaz and Suchitra predominantly work with Indian clients from their home country, the Middle East and the United States who are looking to travel to Australia. “We started operating on 1 March 2013,” Nayaz said. “We were wondering when we were going to get our first client. Our first client was an Indian student studying in Adelaide whose parents were going to visit Australia. “She wanted things set up for them here to visit Sydney, the Gold Coast, and Cairns, so we put things together.” Nayaz and Suchitra were initially excited, yet somewhat sceptical, when

setting up their business in Australia. “It was all new to us - the whole business environment in Australia is very different to what we were used to in India or the US,” Nayaz said. “It took us a little bit of time to understand how it works. We found it easier than doing things in India because people are friendly here - they’re honest

and they’re straightforward. They’re more direct. “The Indian market is very, very complicated. It’s very fragmented nothing is set in stone and even the wealthiest of travellers will check with five different agencies and check everywhere online to try and get the lowest price.

“When most people in India get to know us, they know that once they send their clients to Safir Tours they won’t have to worry. They can sleep easy.” The company’s strength lies in its hands-on approach, the worldwide experience of its founders, and the strong relationship it holds with its partners and suppliers.

BIG IDEAS PUSH THE BOUNDARIES BUSINESS AND PROFESSIONAL SERVICES Sponsor

Winner Ideas Ministry Finalists Direct Management, Successful Endeavours Ideas Ministry creative director Natalie Birch.

Ideas Ministry has edged out heavy-hitters Direct Management and Successful Endeavours to take out the Business and Professional Services award. Ideas Ministry specialises in making brands do the selling for its clients. Natalie Birch is the creative director of the Casey-based business. On her website Ms Birch describes herself as an “ideasmith”. “We combine our great ideas with expert skills in graphic design and marketing and collaborate with other creative professionals like photographers, web designers, copywriters and printers to offer a complete branding solution which reels in your dream customers,” Ms Birch said. “Anyone can design, but it takes personality to come up with great ideas. “At Ideas Ministry we like to find what’s different about you, and use that to your best advantage

across brand development and marketing. Draw a square and we’ll think outside it. “Where many designers will simply take your design brief and follow it, we go a step further and help you to create and fulfil the brief. “We research your industry, market, target customers and competitors, so that we’re starting every project with a really sound idea of what we’re doing, and can deliver you premium results the first time.” Ms Birch has immersed herself in graphic design and creative art for more than 15 years. She was taught by the same lecturer who taught children’s book illustrator Graeme Base of Animalia fame. “We see things differently at Ideas Ministry. Anyone can design, but it takes personality to come up with great ideas. “We’re boundary pushers. Alternative explorers. Your business think tank,” she said.

TAKING HEART FROM JOB OPPORTUNITIES SOCIAL ENTERPRISE Sponsor

Winner Waverley Industries Finalists Kare ONE, Casey and District Multiple Birth Association

Waverley Industries’ reputation as a business with a heart has been firmly cemented with its third award in the Social Enterprise category. Waverley Industries has made this category its own, winning in 2015, 2016 and, now, 2017. The not-for-profit organisation commenced operations in November 1984 with the aim of providing employment opportunities for people with special needs, in particular intellectually disabled adults.

THEIR WORK ENRICHES THEIR LIVES AND BUILDS THEIR SELFESTEEM…

It’s always a team effort at Waverley Industries.

The business employs more than 250 disabled adults at its Waverley Industries Notting Hill site and at its new packaging factory in Star Crescent, Hallam. Waverley Industries opened its 4000-square metre factory in Hallam in 2016, creating 40 jobs for people with disabilities. Director and chief executive Frank Cresia said the expansion enabled the business to develop its accredited training programs to neighbouring special schools.

“We’ve created a lot of new jobs,” he said. “Our success is our people. “That’s our essence and our growth - people with disabilities.” Across its Hallam and Notting Hill locations, workers specialise in packaging solutions, assembly work, manufacturing, mail outs and catering. Mr Cresia said that Waverley Industries was proud to play an important role in the lives of its employees.

“Their work enriches their lives and builds their self-esteem, knowing that they are producing things that we, as a community, need,” he said. “They still receive their disability support pension, so working with us provides a supplement to that.” Waverley Industries makes it a priority to reach out to special needs schools to provide employment opportunities. Working with Waverley Industries

since 2001, Mr Cresia has seen it develop into a thriving business. Assisted by a team of hardworking volunteers, he said the business provided its customers with more than just high-quality products and services at competitive prices. “We’ve gone from an organisation on its knees to a thriving, sustainable, business model,” he said. “Customers see that they’re providing job opportunities for people that wouldn’t otherwise be working.”

YMCA has been an integral part of the City of Casey for the past 19 years and has been recognised as this year’s winner of the Health, Education and Well-being award. YMCA Casey manages the operations of six leisure facilities on behalf of the City of Casey. These facilities include Casey ARC, Casey RACE, Endeavour Hills Leisure Centre, Berwick Leisure Centre, Casey Indoor Leisure Centre and Doveton Pool in the Park. The YMCA-managed centre underwent an $18.3 million redevelopment, relaunching to the local community in June with 10 multipurpose courts including show court seating with a capacity of more than 1000 people. It now has the capability to host major events and, over the initial period, the YMCA has worked closely with a range of stakeholders including Casey Basketball Association and Casey Netball Association to showcase the facility. Problem drags on By Cam Lucadou-Wells Closing down Prospect Hill Road to hoons may just move the problem onto other Casey residents’ doorsteps, says a criminology expert. Melbourne University criminology lecturer Dr Diana Johns said bollards, speed humps and road closures were effective short-term deterrents, as well as increased police presence. “The most likely result, however, will be displacement of the problem. “This means the problem might be reduced or eliminated in one area, yet will spring up at other times, in different forms, and in other areas.” In the long term, community strategies such as identifying the offenders, where they come from and targeting those areas with services and programs such as legal drag racing venues, Dr Johns said. Police enforcement is the best way to de-

ter hoons, but not the whole solution, says Monash University Accident Research Centre deputy director Stuart Newstead. In response to the Prospect Hill Road hooning, Associate Professor Newstead said hoon laws had made a significant impact, particularly the impounding and crushing of offenders’ cars. But it hadn’t stopped a “hard core” of hoons. “It’s particularly effective if you have got cars that they value highly. However, if the car is stolen then that’s not much of an impediment. “If they have a $500 Commodore, which is not unusual, and the impoundment fees can run to many thousands of dollars, they don’t bother getting them back. “Then you have to look at a higher punishment and sentencing regime for the individual.” Punishment should also be followed up with rehabilitative programs, such as road

safety and offender-behaviour programs, he said. For some, legal drag-racing in a controlled environment gave them the necessary outlet but again, not for all. Disqualifying hoons from the roads was becoming more beneficial, especially with automatic number-plate recognition devices detecting many disqualified drivers. Hooning was prevalent in areas of plentiful young males and lower affluence such as the outer South-East, Assoc Prof Newstead said. Stopping them with bollards by closing off Prospect Hill Road might just “send them to someone else’s backyard”. “We know the groups are very mobile and good at using social-media networks to let each other know where the police are. “The police generally want to assist. “They need the community to reach out to them and they need more resources.”

Casey Neighbourhood Watch chairman Rob Ward said “poor environmental design” was a factor at Prospect Hill Drive. “Hoons and others who choose to ignore the law and engage in anti-social behaviour will always seek out places where they feel they can flout the law without risk.” Mr Ward said long-suffering residents should “make a noise” to police, the media, council and councillors. “The hoons make noise, all you need to do is make some noise of your own! Out-pest the pests.” There was also a social issue behind the dangerous offending - disrespect for the law and a lack of adequate punishment in courts, Mr Ward said. “One wonders if we have gone soft on poor behaviour at home, and it is now being played out on our streets? “It may take a village to raise a child, but parents must take the first steps.”

The eagle has landed It’s not too often that a council can pull off an infrastructure spend of well over $100 million and not attract a chorus of disapproval. At the weekend, Casey Council did pretty much that as it unveiled the new Bunjil Place development in Narre Warren. The ambitious $125 million project the largest undertaken by a local government body in the nation - has had its detractors. That was early on, though, and they were mostly the usual suspects. A huge majority of the thousands of people who filed through the new building over the opening weekend activities would have left open-mouthed and impressed. Casey Mayor Sam Aziz referred to Bunjil Place’s “soon to be award-winning design”, which architect Richard Francis said was based on the wings of an eagle and the organic melding of many pathways underneath. The complex has a theatre, art gallery, library, entertainment spaces and council offices - all state-of-the- art. It is spectacular, yet functional and is being touted as an asset for not only Casey but for Melbourne’s South-East and beyond. It gives to the arts and culture community what the equally ambitious Casey Fields has given to the sporting community. Casey is by far the state’s largest council and, as such, has a rates base that allows it to pull off ambitious projects like these. Councils often cop a bad rap - sometimes deservedly so - but councillors and staff under CEO Mike Tyler deserve a round of applause for pulling this one off. Garry Howe

Flag debate fight Debate over flying the Torres Strait Islander flag produced a “bloody disgusting” personal attack in the Greater Dandenong Council chambers. At the Monday 23 October meeting, Councillor Angela Long moved that the council permanently fly it on the third flag pole at the civic centre, which is currently used for a council logo flag. But Cr Tim Dark opposed the motion, and with help from Cr Sampey successfully achieved its deferral. “Cr Long can pot shot me all she likes and she can run around like the socialist left war-

rior she sets out to be ... ” he said. Cr Sean O’Reilly immediately interjected, calling Cr Dark’s language “extremely personal and unnecessary”. Cr Long also responded: “That’s an insult to me and I think that’s bloody disgusting." Mayor Jim Memeti told Cr Dark to “please refrain from any personal attacks”. Cr Dark continued to voice his opposition, reading from the Reconciliation Australia website that it was important to consult with the Torres Strait Islander community before flying the flag. “Instead, we’re going to leap to conclusions and potentially insult the Torres Strait Islander

people,” he said. Cr Sampey said: “Should we defer until confirmation from the Torres Strait Islanders whether they wish to have their flag flown at all? “I think it might be more appropriate.” Crs Dark, Memeti Heang Tak, and Youhorn Chea supported her motion. In opposition were Crs O’Reilly, Long, Matthew Kirwan and Loi Truong. Cr Long said she “just can’t get over the fact that someone’s actually opposed it”. “These are our first people,” she said. “They should have their flag flown. “They’re not under the Aboriginal flag.”

More than 500 people viewed the 330-plus art works on display on Friday 20, Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 October. “I think we had probably about 60 people here on the Friday morning for the schools and all abilities display presentation,” the centre’s administration manager Danielle O’Neill said. “Opening night we had about 230 people attend then across the weekend there would have been between 320 and 350 people.” Ms O’Neill said the show attracted 263 entries in the open section and 70 in the juniors. “That’s almost 100 more entries this year than last year,” she said. “A lot of the new entries came from artists societies outside the municipality as well, so

Last chance By Casey Neill A Noble Park father facing deportation has made his last roll of the dice following a failed appeal to the Immigration and Border Protection Minister. Eranda Ranasinghe, 39, has lodged a complaint with the Office of the Commonwealth Ombudsman claiming Minister Peter Dutton’s decision to send him back to Sri Lanka following 11 years in Australia was unfair. He arrived in Australia as a student on 1 January 2007, completed a hospitality course and worked as a manager at Braeside McDonald’s for three years. But Eranda has failed the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test 22 times. He needs to score six in each component of the test but has fallen 0.5 points short in the reading section. “I attended the classes to improve my knowledge,” he said. Eranda said a teacher picked up something wasn’t right and neuropsychologist Doctor Georgia Lowndes “issued a report explaining that I am having a disorder for reading in IELTS test”. But his attempts to obtain an exemption have failed, including a direct appeal to Mr Dutton in person. In September, he learnt that his latest application had been rejected. Eranda said the Springvale, Noble Park and Keysborough communities had shown support following coverage of his plight in the Star Journal last month. He said people had offered to write to Mr Dutton and suggested a petition or protest. He’s still hopeful he’ll be allowed to stay in Australia. “I don’t think we would be able to start a life back there (in Sri Lanka),” he said. Eranda’s wife is receiving treatment for mental illness. She was recently admitted to hospital for the third time in 18 months. They have a 15-month-old son, Makeyl. He’s struggling to pay rent, unable to work since March last year because his wife and son both need full-time care. A spokesperson for the Department of Immigration and Border Protection said the department and assistant minister had comprehensively assessed Eranda’s case. The spokesperson said the Assistant Minister only intervened in a relatively small number of cases which presented unique and exceptional circumstances.

Woodman was an art show founding member and died last year. “That was actually quite touching,” Ms O’Neill said. “He was a watercolour artist.” A couple of entrants in the junior section took home more than one prize. “Partly that is because we’ve got less junior entries to decide between, but these girls were just standouts,” she said. 100 years ago 1 November 1917 Honour avenue of trees At a meeting of the Dandenong shire council on Thursday, the appended letter was received from Mr R A Pedler hon secretary Ratepayers’ Association, forwarding resolution passed at the recent meeting, asking the shire president to open a fund for the planting of an honour avenue in Dandenong. The association promised to support the proposal. Mr C W Russell, hon secretary of the patriotic league, also wrote in regard to the proposed honour avenue of trees and promised to support the proposal. Cr Abbott said the proposal was a good one and that, in each riding, tree planting should be done to the extent of the number of volunteers who had enlisted, and that brass

plates be attached to each tree, and afterwards to the tree guards. He thought the general public would support the scheme. He moved that the secretary reply, intimating that the proposal would be taken up by council.

50 years ago 31 October 1967 A fire which won’t be lit Preparations by Dandenong West children for their annual bonfire night on 5 November ended abruptly when council men arrived and carted away the material. Council action followed a complaint for fire danger. “We had no alternative but to remove the material,” an officer of the engineering de-

partment explained. The bonfire site, which is about half an acre of vacant land on the corner of Marion Street and Wilma Avenue, was said to be in a built-up area.

20 years ago 27 October 1997 Help with revitalisation Dandenong traders will be offered incentives to dress up their shops in a bid to revitalise the City. A proposal to make the shopping strips look something like Brunswick Street was approved by the council. The Dandenong facade improvement plan will offer incentives to traders who participate in the revamp. However the council will provide just $10,000 for the scheme.

Councillor John Kelly rejected a recommendation to provide $25,000, saying it would blow the budget.

5 years ago 29 October 2012 Asylum seekers’ daily worry Sri Lankan asylum seeker Kumaradevendrar - also known as Kumar - says in some ways he’s better off still being in immigration detention. After 17 months in the Christmas Island and Weipa detention centres, Kumar lives on a government benefit of $1000 a month. More than half of that is paid in rent, leaving him a bit over $100 per week for other expenses. On a 12-month bridging visa, he has full work rights to “support himself”. But getting a job is hard.

WHAT’S IN A

Journal editor Greg Dickson was a freshfaced “boy from the Mallee” in 1939 when he bought the newspaper that would become his passion and his legacy. At his funeral 54 years later, former Dandenong mayor Maurie Jarvis described Greg as “one of Dandenong’s best-loved citizens ever”. “He earned the respect of the community because he was always so unassuming, so quietly efficient and he was always ready to give freely of himself in the service to our community,” he said at the time. He then joked that he would rush to grab the first Journal each Wednesday morning “so I

NAME could read exactly what I had said in the council chamber at the previous meeting”. Greg was an old-style editor/proprietor: he wrote stories, subbed copy, laid out the newspaper, got ink under his nails manning the printing presses and helped distribute the finished product. He inherited his love of newspapers from his mother, Flora. Flora and Alfred Dickson bought the Ouyen and North West Express, a small paper in the heart of the Mallee, in 1918. When Alfred fell

Dickson Lane at the old Dandenong Journal office site. 173387 ill and died several years later, Flora took over. At age 13, Greg was already honing his craft writing all the sports reports for the Express and by 14 he was Ouyen Racing Club’s acting assistant secretary. Greg eventually left school to help his

mother full-time at the Express. When Flora sold the paper in late 1938, Greg decided to buy his own. William Bennett was ready to sell the Journal. “Every reporter hopes for the day when he might have his own paper and run it the way he thinks it should be run,” Greg wrote when he retired as editor in 1964. “I was lucky - I set out to buy a paper in Yarrawonga and wound up buying one in Dandenong!” The Journal’s circulation was 950 when Greg bought it. By 1961 paid circulation had grown to 6500, making it one of the largest circulating provincial newspapers in Victoria. Greg sold the Journal to Rupert Murdoch’s Cumberland Newspaper Group in 1961, staying on as editor. He ‘retired’ in 1964 but continued contributing news, sporting and social items to the paper until his death in 1993.

Syndicate steps in A private syndicate has bought Nissan’s headquarters in Dandenong South. David Aiello and Stephen Adgemis from commercial real estate agency CBRE negotiated the sale following an expressions of interest campaign that attracted more than 80 inquiries. The site at 260-270 Frankston-Dandenong Road is 11.42 hectares and currently houses Nissan’s corporate office and parts warehousing operations. Mr Adgemis said industrial land prices in the area had spiked to record levels during the past six months. “Development and value-add opportunities are becoming increasingly scarce in the South-East, with most of the major sites owned

The former Nissan site. by only a handful of developers,” he said. “This underpinned significant national interest in the Nissan sale campaign from both developers and occupiers.” The Nissan site included a 2.68ha corner site featuring a two-storey office building and an adjoining 8.7ha space at 8-22 Quality Drive

with three buildings. Mr Aiello said only 28 per cent of the site was now used. Nissan Australia chief financial officer Stephen Hope said the parts warehouse facility would relocate to Truganina. “Innovation is at the core of the Nissan brand and we are seeking a new head office facility that reflects this philosophy as well as one that will help to attract and retain the best industry talent,” he said. “Nissan Australia has already had internal workshops to collect ideas, our global team has visited to understand market conditions, and our partners, like CBRE, have helped us prepare for the next steps in the relocation process.”

Changken Chan is a mathematical marvel. The Dandenong 12-year-old was in the top 0.3 per cent of Grade 6 students who completed the 40th annual Australian Mathematics Competition on 27 July, an activity of the Australian Mathematics Trust. The Dandenong West Primary student has been invited to attend the Australian Maths Trust Awards presentation evening on Monday 30 October for the outstanding result. The competition lasts one hour and tests from basic numeracy skills through to advanced problem solving. “I wasn’t really surprised,” Changken said. “I kind of half expected it because I knew I got most of the questions right and only a few wrong.” He found his talent for maths “a long time ago, in Prep”. “I was good at logical reasoning and finding

out ways to do things in a methodical way,” he said. “I started learning some things about maths and I practised some. “I told my mum to buy some books about maths. “I practised and I got faster at it.” Changken said he “accelerated very quickly” in Years 3 and 4. He puts his success down to “just hard work” and a bit of natural talent. “I have fun doing it, but I don’t get that excited when I do maths,” he said. “I just enjoy it. “I like practising and I enjoy trying to solve problems.” Last year he placed in the top 7 per cent in his year level. “I looked at last year’s one, saw what I got wrong ... ” he said. “To be more careful, that was the basic thing.

Two teenage boys ripped a phone from their victim’s hands at a Dandenong bus stop, police allege. Transit CIU detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the Sunday 1 October incident on Langhorne Street. On Wednesday 25 October they released images of two teens they believe could assist with their investigation. They said the victim was waiting for a bus in a shelter about 4pm when two teens got off a bus and approached him. One allegedly tried to grab his phone from his hands, but he held onto it. A short struggle took place and the teen ripped the phone from the victim’s hands. The boys fled on foot, running towards the Dandenong Market area. No one was injured during the incident. Call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at www. crimestoppersvic.com.au with any information.

Suspect arrested over 20 burglaries Student Changken Chan takes another look at the test paper. “I concentrated more and got better results.” This time he got just three questions wrong. “I feel great about it,” he said. Changken’s classmates also performed well in the contest. The school entered 16 students. Four achieved a certificate of distinction for placing in the top 20 per cent. Five students achieved a credit and six students received a proficiency certificate. More than 4000 students from Australia and beyond took part.

Police arrested a Dandenong man over 20 alleged burglaries across the South-East and beyond. Greater Dandenong CIU Senior Constable Heather Whitehead said they took the 26-yearold into custody at his home on Wednesday 18 October. She said the alleged burglaries occurred over the past few months and stretched from Dandenong to the South-East and into the Melbourne CBD. Police did not recover any stolen property at the address. He was remanded in custody to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 2 November.

Diamond of a duo

IN BRIEF A winner scratches big A Keysborough woman isn’t letting her $200,000-winning scratchy out of her sight even while she sleeps. Speaking to a Tatts official to claim her prize, she said she was looking forward to decorating her new house and spoiling her kids. “I was at home in the backyard relaxing, and I actually thought I had won $20,000 and was over the moon with that amount,” she said. “I took a photo and sent it to my son and he told me ‘Mum, that’s $200,000!’ “I ran and got my glasses from upstairs and looked at it again and saw that it was true! I’m really grateful for the win.” The winner said she’d save some cash for a nice holiday next year, too. She said she regularly bought Instant Scratch-Its and had a “feeling” about this particular ticket, and hasn’t let it out of her sight. “It was next to us in bed with us. We were quite happy to share our bed with the winning ticket,” she said. Million Dollar Lotto at Parkmore Shopping Centre in Keysborough sold the ticket. Owner Simon Boctor said he was pleased to hear that a regular customer had scratched a top prize. “We will be telling all of our customers that our store has sold a winner,” he said.

By Casey Neill Allan and Gloria Coggins have shared their lives for more than 60 years, but share different views on what has kept them together. Gloria said patience, working with your family and taking things as they come had helped to keep their six-decade union in good shape. Allan had another take on the key to staying together. “Least said, soonest mended,” he laughed. The Keysborough couple celebrated their diamond anniversary on Thursday 26 October with a dinner at Dandenong Pavilion with their family. They tied the knot at St George’s Presbyterian Church in Chapel Street, East St Kilda, in 1957. “Everything went off perfectly. The weather was fine and we had a great time,” Gloria said. The reception was at The New Alexandra. “It was quite pricey and my father even offered Allan to elope,” Gloria laughed. “I think he was joking. I had two brothers and I was the only girl, you see. I don’t think he would have missed out on that.” Allan still remembers the first time he laid eyes on Gloria, at a Saturday night dance at St Kilda Town Hall in 1955. “Allan asked me for a dance, didn’t he,” Gloria said. “Then he asked me for more dances and then he asked if he could take me home!” He drove an F100 truck at the time. “And it just carried on from there,” Gloria said. They got engaged in 1956 and in 1960 bought their first home, in Noble Park. They moved to Keysborough in 1979. “It was all market gardens,” Allan said. Their first son was born in1960, and two

more soon followed. They both agreed that their children were the highlight of their relationship. “We’re proud of them because they’ve all done well with their jobs and things,” Allan said. “I don’t think any of them has ever been on the dole, have they? “They’ve all kept themselves with work.” Allan worked in the automotive industry, spending 30 years at General Motors after taking a job there “temporarily”. Gloria worked as a secretary, including a stint at the Journal. Allan is a life member at Noble Park Little Athletics and the family was also involved in local football and swimming.

Stalker's slit throat threat

Accelerated & Enhanced Learning Program Years 8 and 9 2018

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Dandenong man has been refused bail while accused of stalking and telling his Mernda expartner to “sleep with one eye open” because he would slit her throat. The man had recently escalated his unpredictability and aggression, police informant First Constable Courtney Milner told a Dandenong Magistrates’ Court bail hearing on 23 October. On 20 October, the man allegedly messaged the victim that “I’m coming over ... I don’t give a f*** about the coppers. You’ve created all this.” He followed that with other messages threatening to kill her and three friends, and to report her to authorities as an unfit mother, First Const Milner said. “I’m not going to stop until I crush you.” Two days later he allegedly warned her to “sleep with one open, c***, because I’ll slit your throat open”. When arrested and interviewed by police, the man denied the latter threat. He threatened to “smash” the victim, not kill her, he told police. Police opposed bail due to the risk of the man re-offending and his threats alarming the “extremely fearful” victim, First Const Milner said. He had inflicted family violence at least five times to two different victims, the informant said. In December, the man had been jailed for 70 days and placed on an 18-month corrections order for a string of violent offences against the same victim last year. The offences included: Slapping the victim’s face in front of her children in her garage; Opening her car door, holding a lighter up to the roof and threatening to destroy her car; Parking outside her home and threatening to kill himself; Driving a car through her fence; Trying to run her over as she walked home, and then crashing into a pole as he sped away from police; Forcibly shaking the victim’s father; Forcibly shaking the victim until she passed out in front of her children; Banging her head against the car window while she was driving. The man told the court he’d gone off his mental-health medication recently so he could go back to work. “No one will employ me with all these drugs in my system.” The man said he stayed in the house most of the time, and it was the victim who “stalks and harasses me” with frequent phone calls. He said that his phone had been seized by police and he couldn’t remember the victim’s numbers. The man was remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 15 November.

Model singer Dandenong High School student Hoseah Partsch has landed a modelling gig. The 18-year-old is about to head out on tour with Boy George and Culture Club after finishing in second place on this year’s season of television singing contest The Voice. As if that wasn’t enough, menswear brand Johnny Bigg has announced him as an ambassador for its spring/summer campaign and unveiled a series of images from a photo shoot with The Voice winner Judah Kelly. Hoseah wowed the coaches and the public with his soulful performances on the show. “I’m just a normal kid from Melbourne trying to chase his dream and make a better future for his family,” he said.

Out of the gutter Greater Dandenong Council has refuted claims that elderly residents are waiting 18 months for gutter cleaning. Councillor Maria Sampey told the Monday 9 October council meeting that “probably at the end of the 18 months they’re in nursing home”. But community services director Martin Fidler said the current wait time was actually about six weeks.

Hoseah Partsch is to be a clothing brand ambassador.

Council’s cat calls “How do the cats know what time they have to come home? How do the owners tell them what time?” Greater Dandenong councillor Sean O’Reilly asked the tongue-in-cheek question regarding a Domestic Animal Management Plan report proposing a cat curfew. City planning, design and amenity director Jody Bosman explained that most cats didn’t wander too far from home and were used to regular feeding times. The curfew suggestion followed a 342 per cent increase in complaints about cat trespass from 2013 to 2016. Officers will research options and bring the issue back to councillors for a vote.

Should Greater Dandenong Council fine residents who don’t keep their nature strips neat? Councillor Sean O’Reilly asked the question at the Monday 23 October council meeting. City planning, design and amenity director Jody Bosman confirmed there was no policy about maintaining nature strips. “If the number of people that don’t mow is substantial, would the council consider passing local laws that would fine lazy and untidy residents that don’t mow their lawn?” Cr O’Reilly asked. THE LOWDOWN Q&A

with Stefan Koomen, electorate officer for Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams

What is something people don’t know about you? I have a heavy rigid truck licence. I was actually a truck driver before I started working for Gabrielle. Quite the change!

How did you wind up working with Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams? I met Gabrielle at the local shops in Doveton when she had a community street stall. I then volunteered on Gabrielle’s 2014 election campaign and after being elected she offered me a job working in the office.

THREE … groups to support your business

1

The Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce has been a local fixture for 70 years. It aims to applaud business success, facilitate networking and promote business in the region. It will present its annual awards on 22 November.

2

South East Melbourne Manufacturers Alliance (SEMMA) has more than 200 members. It advocates on their behalf, negotiates bulk deals on energy and more, and facilitates networking. Its Christmas cocktail night is on 11 December.

3

Greater Dandenong Council’s South East Business Networks (SEBN) is about encouraging businesses to think and supporting them to act. Its role is to bring people together to strengthen knowledge and capability in the region. SEBN holds breakfast, lunch and networking events throughout the year and a golf day on 26 February.

Do you always see eye to eye on politics? We share similar views and values but we both love to debate and challenge each other’s perspectives on issues.

What was your most memorable moment? Getting married to my wife Catriona in 2015.

What would your last meal be? There are so many great options in Dandenong - either a banquet at Afghan Rahimi Restaurant (Walker Street) or a noodle bowl at Banh Mi and Noodle Co (Halpin Way).

What event, past, present or future, would you like to witness? The Socceroos winning a World Cup. Dare to dream!

What is your favourite television show? Have You Been Paying Attention - Channel 10 comedy show.

Was politics a career path you’d aspired to? It was never my intention, however, I have always been passionate about social justice and

Stefan Koomen. fairness. This job is a fantastic opportunity to support our local MP and to also help my community.

What has been your most embarrassing moment? Forgetting to put an event in Gabrielle’s diary! Thankfully she is very understanding. On a personal note - karaoke. Singing is certainly not my forte and I may have been booed off stage once.

At school I ... Studied hard and always tried to embrace every opportunity offered to me in secondary school and at university.

What was your first or favourite concert? Favourite concert - seeing The Panics at the National Gallery of Victoria earlier this year was a highlight for me. They are my favourite Australian band.

Graeme Kershaw’s employer roped him in to helping out at the Dandenong Show. That was back in 1966. The 82-year-old has been to every show since and has no plans to stop. “I’ll always attend,” he said. He and wife Joy moved to Dandenong for his job with Alex Scott and Co as a stock and station agent. “Of course, Mr Scott and other staff members were members of the show committee,” Mr Kershaw said. “Therefore I was roped in. “I’d been involved with other shows, so I knew what was going on. “But the Dandenong Show, of course, was much larger, than what I had experienced before. “I was put onto the cattle committee. That’s where I stayed, actually.” Greaves Reserve will host this year’s show on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 November. The dairy and beef cattle are shown on the Saturday. “They’re judged on their breed, the quality of the cattle,” Mr Kershaw said. “Each breed has different aspects to how they’re formed, and that’s about it.” “They come from the Mornington Peninsula, the Yarra Valley and Gippsland - Warragul, Pakenham, Wonthaggi. “You see the very best of each breed of cattle.” Mr Kershaw was cattle committee chairman for several years and did announcing in the cattle section, too. Last year he was recognised for serving the show for 50 years and received an engraved clock for his commitment and support. “I was honoured as a life member some

She asked to be driven to Dandenong Railway Station and once there, refused to pay the fare. A verbal altercation ensued and, police said, the woman stabbed the 48-year-old in the hand with a syringe. The Dandenong North driver followed the woman to the railway station lift where she again produced the syringe. She then boarded a city-bound train at 9.09pm. Detectives released images and CCTV of a woman who might be able to assist with their inquiries. She’s described as 20 to 30 years old and Caucasian with a thin build and bright orange hair. She was wearing a green jacket, white top and purple and pink three-quarter length leggings. The woman had a tattoo on her right upper arm. Police urged anyone who witnessed the incident or who knows the woman’s identity to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au

HIGHLIGHT PROPERTY

VIEWS ACROSS THE LAKE ON an enormous block of 933 square metres, this home was built about 13 years ago and has recently undergone a renovation to the highest specifications. The double storey mansion has everything anyone could possibly wish for, and then some. The address alone is a ‘double whammy’. Located on prestigious Clearwater Drive, the house backs directly onto the iconic Lakeside Lake. The new owners will be able to walk to shops, cafes, restaurants, medical and dental clinics, schools, the Cardinia Cultural Centre, the amphitheatre, parks and public transport. And don’t forget that the biggest drawcard of this estate, the Lake with 1.5km of walking trail right around it, is just outside the back yard and accessible via a private gate. From the triple upstairs balcony, the view over the lake is breathtaking at any time of day or night. Buy that telescope the kids have always wanted and watch the stars overhead at night and the wildlife during the day. From the private fully fenced and gated back yard, the new owners will be able to swim in their private pool, garden in the veggie patch, or just let the kids play safely on the grass. Inside, the house has five enormous bedrooms with the downstairs master suite which is fit for a celebrity. A large dressing room, enormous ensuite with his and hers vanities and oversized shower will make the new owners think they are in a five-star hotel. Even the large family bathroom has double vanities (the kids will thank you) and an oversized shower! A downstairs entertaining area leads out to an undercover outdoor eating area and pool, and features a kitchenette. Home master chefs will love the enormous upstairs kitchen that has

oodles of storage and bench space, or they can create and serve meals downstairs directly in the kitchenette, complete with its own dishwasher to save carting stuff back upstairs. Games enthusiasts can make full use of the reinforced floor in the ball room (yes, that’s right, this house has its own upstairs ballroom) to put in that full-sized billiard table the family has always wanted. Or use the ballroom for that home cinema, home gym, home dance or yoga studio. There is zoned ducted gas heating, refrigerated cooling, ducted vacuuming, 27 solar panels with 5.13kw input, solar gas boosted hot water, double glazed PVC

windows and 2.7m ceilings throughout. There is Kempas hardwood flooring, solid timber doors, a massive four-car garage with remote-controlled panel lift door with side remote controlled roller door, multiple sheds, multiple power points in and out, taps on all corners of the house, a 4500 litre water tank, double insulated ceilings and insulation between all internal walls to ease noise reduction, a fully wired for an alarm system… the list of inclusions goes on and on. This is Lakeside living at its best with complete privacy and convenience. Inspect now and do not let this dream home get away. ●

MAGICAL CHARACTERS DELIGHT CROWDS THE launch of Arcadia estate’s new display village at Officer proved a huge hit with the local community recently. About 700 people, mostly families, enjoyed the free family event as Arcadia transformed itself into a storybook wonderland - a nod to the book names that feature throughout Arcadia’s streets, plus the four schools within the estate. Flamingos, unicorns, a polar bear, gorilla and an elephant were some of the animals that lined the streets of Arcadia as families enjoyed free food and African drum beats in the jungle tent. Satterley Property Group general manager for Victoria and Queensland Jack Hoffmann said the local turnout and the quality of display homes combined to make the perfect day. “Creating vibrant communities is at the heart of all our projects and it was fantastic to see so many Arcadia residents and the

local community support the event.” Hoffmann said the 35-home display village proved popular with all major builders receiving strong interest on the day and the Arcadia sales team were ‘flat out’ for much of the day. A range of great prizes were also up for grabs. Club Officer donated Spring Carnival tickets for Pakenham Race Course, and Renae Appleby of Narre Warren South won a $6000 Gold Class cinema experience courtesy of Satterley. In true community style, Officer Secondary College ran the sausage sizzle and the Arcadia A-Team, members of a residents’ basketball team which plays at Cardinia Life received their new uniforms thanks to Satterley. Combined with excellent value for money, Greyhounds Entertainment also has a private function room that seats 45 to 50 people. With this space, the entertainment hub can cater for events such as cocktail parties and small wedding celebrations. Countdown to the party

12368205-ACM42-17

It is never too early to book a work Christmas party. Christmas is a busy time with a lot of commitments, the last minute rush at work, finishing up school and other events for the year, planning holiday breaks or for those in retail - dealing with the Christmas rush. Diaries fill up fast with functions - not only for those attending but also for the venues. So the earlier a booking is made the more likely the client is going to get exactly what they want and where they want it. Some organisations have a standard booking each year and some get in as early as six months ahead. However, for most organisations this is either over-kill or not possible and so late September and earlier October is the prime time to make bookings for those Christmas celebrations. First things first. It’s important to establish the type of Christmas party wanted - relaxed, formal, small, large or something out of the ordinary - and look for options. Budget and timing are also key factors in deciding which venue will be perfect. Doing a bit of research is essential. Check out the advertisements in newspapers for any good deals that might be around for favourite venues. This is the time of year when venues will be looking for bookings, too, and will have announced any special packages that they have.

There are often good venue deals at this time of the year.

Soprano Georgia Wilkinson and tenor David Hobson get into the Christmas spirit ahead of their Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS Drum Theatre show. 174190 Talk to friends and colleagues about previous parties - word of mouth is always good but remember some venues may have changed hands or management teams and what was boring last year might be the place to be now. Compile a list of favourite options to be circulated around the workplace, making sure the venue chosen has dietary options for all those attending and that there are public transport or other options available for getting home safely.

Christmas spirit at the Drum Dandenong’s Drum Theatre will host a night of Christmas spirit for all ages. Two of Australia’s top operatic performers will join forces for the From Bach to Bing Christmas Show from 7.30pm on Thursday 21 December. Tenor David Hobson and soprano Georgia

Wilkinson will join with pianist Rhodri Clarke to perform traditional and modern Christmas music and provide some singalong opportunities. Tickets are priced from $55. Visit www. drumtheatre.com.au for bookings or more information.

Leaping at the chance Clark was hampered early in the season by a niggling injury, but bounced back to end the TAC Cup season as one of its most dominant midfielders, while also earning the prestigious honour of playing for Team Enright in the Under 18’s All Stars match on AFL Grand Final day on 30 September. “In the first part of the year I was just trying to get my body right, I missed the most of pre-season with a groin injury and that hung around for most of the year, and in the first half I wasn’t playing full game time,” he said. “In the last couple of months, I’ve played my best footy, but that’s when my body had overcome that, and was able to play full games. “It was just awesome (playing on the ‘G) I’m a Richmond man also, so to play on that day was special - running on the ‘G was surreal, and when I was running out there I was just imagining running out there for an AFL Grand Final, and you just take in the little things.” He also believes the club out of Shepley Oval could be in for a decent draft haul, with up to half a dozen names likely to be taken. “I think we have a pretty strong chance of quite a few drafted - potentially there could be five or six, and maybe a couple of 19-year-olds, we’ve got quite a bit of talent,” he said.

Dandenong Stingray midfielder Hunter Clark is as tough as nails, wins the football relentlessly and leaps for the ball like a key position player. That’s why the Peninsula product is one of the most enticing prospects in this year’s draft pool. After a stunning purple patch in the second half of the year, Clark was the runaway winner in the Stingrays’ Best and Fairest award, averaging almost 27 disposals, half a dozen tackles and almost a goal a game. Life is hectic at the moment for the Stingray who will be juggling his VCE exams over the next month while awaiting draft day on 24 November where he will learn which of the 18 AFL clubs he will begin his journey with in 2018. “Yeah, it’s all pretty busy at the moment but there is still a little while to go (before the draft), so I’m just trying to keep it simple and pretty normal. “Not much has changed with what I’m doing and how I’m acting, but it’s definitely a different feeling getting close to the draft,” he said. “I’ve been fine now that the season is done, it’s definitely become more of a focus (the draft) - whatever happens, happens, and if I’m lucky enough to be picked up, it’s what I’ve wanted to do forever so I’d be stoked. “There’s still a long way to go, I’ve put in a lot of hard work to get here.” After the initial nervousness that accompanies being interviewed by a range of different clubs from all parts of the country, Clark said he now enjoys the process, despite a few differences between Victorian and interstate clubs. “Speaking to the clubs the first few times

Zippy performance upset By Mick Floyd Zipping Hawk caused a major upset at Sandown Park last Thursday night by taking out a TAB Melbourne Cup Prelude at $17. In his first start at Sandown Park since reaching the group two McKenna Memorial final in July, Zipping Hawk began cleanly from box six before carving down to the rail through the first turn. From there he railed under Mepunga Tycoon and powered away from the field off the back straight to score by five lengths in 29.54. It was the 10th win of his career and guaranteed him a place in the heats of the world’s richest greyhound race, the TAB Melbourne Cup. “It’s very exciting,” said Tammy Collins who handled the greyhound on behalf of her father, Steve. “He’s matured a lot. When he first started racing he wanted the rail pretty badly. “Tonight he jumped a lot better and cleared a lot of the dogs underneath him before he got to the rail, which is a lot better to see, but I think he’s just starting to put it all together. “He’s always had the ability but his bad box manners have been his downfall.” Pleasingly for connections, Collins believes Zipping Hawk will improve further off that run. “That was his first 500m since coming back from a spell so, hopefully, he’s going to improve with fitness and can keep pressing on to Melbourne Cup heats.” In the night’s second TAB Melbourne Cup Prelude, Zara’s Entity showed why she is widely regarded as one of the favourites for the series with a stunning victory in 29.26. Returning to Sandown Park after an unlucky fifth in the group one Adelaide Cup, Zara’s En-

tity began fairly but used box one to full advantage to rail beneath her rivals through the first turn. With clear galloping room she drew level with early leader Effective Comet leaving the back straight before unleashing a powerful final section to win by seven lengths. Her run home time of 10.37 seconds was one of the fastest recorded in 2017.

“She’s destined to go over more ground but not when she’s running like that,” said Jackie Greenough, deputizing for her husband, Kelvyn. It was her ninth win from just 16 starts and was the third time she’s broken 29.30 at the track. “She definitely loves this track. She’s an easy dog to train, she doesn’t do anything wrong.” Despite winning some of the country’s big-

gest races, the TAB Melbourne Cup has eluded Greenough. Zara’s Entity has firmed into $14 second favouritism to finally breakthrough for the popular Pearcedale trainer. The winners of each TAB Melbourne Cup Prelude automatically earns a place in the heats on Friday 17 November with the winner of each heat progressing to the $600,000 final on Friday 24 November.

Maroons fail Bloods test By Nick Creely

Springvale South quick Nathan King took 2/50 in North Dandenong’s second innings. 78th over and with three wickets remaining. Kaushyla Weeraratne (2/48) and Lee Brown (2/28) were steady with the ball all day. BUCKLEY RIDGES and BERWICK played out a thrilling final day, with the Bucks managing to steal a magnificent victory by 27 runs. The Bears looked in control at 1/68 as play resumed on day two, still 121 runs shy of the Bucks’ total but totally in command on their

home deck. Quick wickets stunted the Bears’ progress in the early stages with star all-rounder Daniel Watson (4/27) bowling brilliantly, and despite resistance in the latter part of the innings, the home side were bowled out for 161. Ryan Williamson (29) was the top scorer for the Bears, with seven batsmen scoring between 10 and 30.

Donnell shows his class VIC PREMIER CRICKET REVIEW - ROUND 4 Dandenong champion Tom Donnell has feasted on CaseySouth Melbourne for the last decade, so it was only fitting he did it once again in a milestone match. Playing his 200th Victorian Premier Cricket match after starting his career with the Swans, Donnell thrilled his beloved Shepley Oval with a wonderful half century to guide his side to a 4-0 record and on top of the ladder. Two iffy calls gave the Panthers the opening scalps of Casey pair Kasun Suriaratchie (0) and Lachlan Sperling (5), and before drinks, the Swans were hanging on by a thread

at 5/37. Veteran quick Darren Pattinson (4/19) was simply phenomenal in this period, winding back the clock in a stellar spell that saw him bowl his 10 overs straight and worry the Swans with his pace and bounce. As they did last week, Chris Benedek (23) steadied the ship while Dylan Hadfield (43) played the aggressor, and it worked a treat, helping lift the score to 9/155 off their 50 overs - a competitive, yet underpar score. It didn’t take long for legendary openers Donnell and Brett Forsyth to take the fizz out of the contest, with Donnell cracking an early lofted drive straight to the boundary in the second over.

Forsyth was eventually run out 15 runs short of a half century with the score at 93, but it didn’t stop Donnell from aggressively sending the ball to every corner of the ground. The skipper eventually fell for 56, but it simply didn’t matter, with Ed Newman (40) once again showing his abundance of class by playing a crafty knock. A dominant Dandy got the runs in the 32nd over, with LJ Edwards (12 not out) and James Nanopoulos (8 not out) there at the end. The win leaves the Panthers undefeated and atop the Premier ladder, ahead of a Round 5 clash with Melbourne Uni away.

In the round’s other results, MORDIALLOC continues to show no signs of slowing down after an easy win over DANDENONG WEST, with Hari Krishan making twin fifties for the match, while Ruwantha Kellepotha’s stellar 151 guided ST MARY’S to a crushing win over CRANBOURNE, while HALLAM KALORA PARK fell four wickets short of defeating NARRE WARREN outright after dominating both days.

DDCA TURF 1 REVIEW - ROUND 2 (DAY 2) Saturday may have saw NORTH DANDENONG narrowly avoid outright after bravely digging in with the bat, but it also saw SPRINGVALE SOUTH showcase its pure power and get its season off to a perfect 2-0 start. After claiming the points on the opening day, the Bloods re-entered Alex Nelson Reserve hell bent on earning itself some valuable outright points. Resuming at 1/18, the Maroons hung tough after a couple of early wickets, with Syed Mehmood (64) and Sanjeewa De Silva (57) doing an excellent job of putting the pressure back on the Bloods with some counterattacking batting. After sitting comfortable at 3/151, spinner Jarryd Straker (5/36) tore the middleto-late order apart and Nathan King (2/50) bowled some important overs, as the Maroons scratched their way to 202 - 154 runs clear of avoiding outright. The equation was fairly simple, 17 overs and 155 runs to win and earn the extra points. And the Bloods gave it an almighty crack, with Nathan King (25), Michael Vandort (30) and Steven Spoljaric (58 off 28 balls) combining for seven sixes to almost clinch an incredible outright victory, falling just 14 runs short. But the Bloods proved they are a force, and one that has the capability to produce some extraordinary results. Down at Reedy Reserve, DINGLEY clinched a crucial victory over last year’s runners up, HEINZ SOUTHERN DISTRICTS, with the Dingoes winning by three wickets. After a par 146 by the Cobras on day one, the Dingoes sat at 4/45 at one point before vital cameos from Kyle Murdoch (23), Andrew Dalby (30), Brody Balfour (38 not out) and Dinuk Hettiarachchi (33 not out) saw them grind away and eventually pass the home side in the
