Water into wine By Peter Douglas A recycled water project that would “futureproof” the local wine industry may not be a pipedream for much longer. Minister for Water, Lisa Neville, and Monbulk MP James Merlino on Friday 27 October met with growers and landowners in the Yarra Valley, as well as Yarra Ranges Council representatives, to discuss the $15.6 million Coldstream Recycled Water Pipeline project. Soumah of Yarra Valley hosted the dignitaries, who were also treated to a tour of the impressive vineyard in Gruyere. The Victorian Government has submitted a business case to the Federal Government under the National Water Infrastructure Development Fund and is awaiting the outcome of the
assessment process. The application outlines a strong case for the Federal Government to invest $7.8 million, with the remainder of the project cost coming from local landholders in the region. Viticulture manager at Soumah, Tim Knight, said water security was crucial to long-term viability for winegrowers in the region. “This year, rainfall hasn’t been very good at all. We’ve had small rains of 17mm to 20mm. That gets the ground wet, but we need to get it flowing into the dams,” he said. “Recently, we did have 17mm in 45 minutes, but it ran too fast. We’ve just spent $36,000 to put in more draining to catch more rainfall, because we need more insurance. “With a new pipeline, it would give us security and flexibility for new plantings.”

termination of future investment and things have changed in the last 10 to 20 years in terms of rainfall levels,” she said. “The spring period has been well below average rainfall in Melbourne. Melbourne will see somewhere between 30 per cent to 40 per cent below average rainfall levels over the next 20 years, so security is absolutely a project that stacks up. “We have a number of projects we have funded, and also put in to the Commonwealth, and this is up there as one of our number ones in terms of what we think the Commonwealth should be supporting.” Mr Merlino agreed the pipeline would be a boon for the region. “The Yarra Valley produces some of the best wine in the world - this project will be a win for tourism, jobs and the local economy,” he said.

There are 160 wineries in the region, with the proposed pipeline project to benefit many wellrenowned wineries including Rochford, Giant Steps, Oakridge, Maddens Lane, Soumah and Levantine Hill. Yarra Ranges councillor Jim Child said not only would water security be a win for the local industry, it could encourage further growth. “The biggest win out of this is to get that water security to the farms out here. We’ve got a takeup of 50 growers at the moment,” Cr Child said. “But what we see is that vision for this precinct ... the land could see future agriculture aspects that could be established. And the key to that is water security.” Ms Neville shared the sentiment of water security stimulating industry growth. “There’s no question ... water is a central de-

McLeish wants road action State Member for Eildon, Liberal Cindy McLeish MP has made claims that more needs to be done to address safety issues on the Healesville-Kooweerup Road. In July this year Ms McLeish wrote to Minister for Roads and Road Safety Luke Donnellan calling for immediate upgrades to be undertaken on the notoriously dangerous road. “It has taken the Minister three months to respond to this request made on behalf of our community,” Ms McLeish said. “This just shows the government does not believe this issue is important enough to warrant immediate and significant action.” Mr Donnellan’s response said that
advisory 55km/h warning signs had been installed, while VicRoads was investigating other treatments in consultation with Victoria Police. Although recently VicRoads had been working with local police and the CFA to improve the roadway and had undertaken resurfacing works along the section of dangerous road. VicRoads will also be undertaking a pavement reseal and road widening (where possible) on Healesville-Kooweerup Road between Syme and Dalry Road in early 2018. “VicRoads is working with Victoria Police and the local CFA on ways to improve road safety on HealesvilleKooweerup Road in Woori Yallock,” Vicroads’ acting regional director of metro
south east Savoula Lidis said. “Safety is our number one priority which is why we’ve completed shortterm safety works while more permanent options for improving safety along the road are being considered.” Ms McLeish has also raised the need for electronic 40km/h speed signs to be installed at Woori Yallock Primary School, which she said the Andrews Labor Government had continued to ignore since 2014. “After raising this matter seven times in parliament, separately writing to the Minister and tabling a community petition, the government continues to ignore the need to keep our children safe,” she said.
State Member for Eildon, Liberal Cindy McLeish MP has made claims that more needs to be done to address safety issues on the Healesville-Kooweerup Road.
In brief 107 in a 50 zone A 28-year-old East Warburton man will be off the road for an extended period of time after being intercepted on Warburton Highway, Yarra Junction, travelling at 107km/h in a 50km/h zone. He was intercepted about 11.30pm last night by Warburton police. It was also discovered by police that he was the holder of a disqualified driver’s licence. His Nissan Patrol was impounded, and he will face the Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on a later date.
Bin fires Over the past three weeks, Wesburn and Millgrove CFA have experienced three bin fires in the vicinity of Mckenzie King Drive, Millgrove. The first involved a bin at the Mckenzie King drive playground around 4am on 15 October. The second bin was set alight in the middle of the road on the Mckenzie King Drive bridge around 4am on 28 October. On the same night, two bus stops on Warburton Highway at Mckenzie King Drive and outside the front of the Wesburn/Millgrove fire refuge were vandalised by having their glass panels smashed. The final act of arson was when another bin was set alight on the Mckenzie King Drive bridge around 6am on 29 October. Anyone with information regarding these acts of arson and vandalism is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or Yarra Junction police on 5967 1104.

Most residents familiar with Rotary’s work overseas would be aware of the Milking Cow and Goat Project commenced and driven by the efforts of local Rotarian Wilma Best and her husband, Bruce. Wilma said the project had delivered 60 milking goats to the care of grandmothers in a village and 10 milking cows to feed and provide milk in three sites of Meru County in Kenya. Although primarily funded through their efforts with fund-raisers such as regular raffles and

Goodbye from the mayor From my
desk Noel Cliff
Yarra Ranges mayor/Streeton Ward
This column is my last as mayor of the Yarra Ranges, ahead of the mayoral election meeting on Tuesday, 14 November. From the moment I got this job, I’ve wanted to create a more harmonious feeling between council and the community, listening to residents’ views and representing them and council.
Though I came into the role after a period of massive change, in terms of the council elections, I feel confident in saying that I’ve been successful. We’ve had many achievements during the last year. Our council meetings on the road involved holding council meetings in Healesville, Montrose, Warburton and Upwey, making council more accessible for residents out of our urban areas. Last month’s Mayor’s Big Day Out brought together more than 200 musicians and performers for a free community day, accessible to families and residents of all abilities. There have been achievements in the com-
munity, with successful advocacy for Eastern Community Legal Centre and School Focused Youth Service funding from the federal and state governments, to recently securing an ABC Radio re-broadcasting antenna in the Warburton Valley. The role of mayor is a privileged position and I’ve been able to meet so many community members, groups and young people making a difference in the Yarra Ranges. From the Friends of Sassafras Creek, Project Upwey, to the Hills Food Frontier and the countless groups in the Yarra Valley, there are so many residents and groups doing wonderful volunteer work to help their communities. This year, we released a vision and values statement, developed off the back of 3000 re-

Care to new level By Kath Gannaway Ron Walker’s response to seeing his new room at AdventCare Yarra Ranges was typical of many of the residents. “I don’t want to wait another day. I feel like getting a wheelbarrow and moving myself into my new room right now,” he joked. He only had to wait a day or two after the official opening of Stage 1 of the redevelopment by Yarra Ranges Mayor Noel Cliff, on Thursday, 26 October, 2017. The first stage, started earlier this year, has provided 19 fully compliant resident rooms with ensuite, a new lounge and courtyard, and upgraded decor and the upgraded external appearance of the facility. Advent Care CEO David Reece said new furniture had been purchased, and thanked the many people and groups involved, mainly to a generous grant from the Upper Yarra Community Enterprise - Warburton/Yarra Junction Bendigo Community Banks. “This has resulted in a warm and restful living environment for our residents,” he said. Mr Reece said the decision 10 months ago to redevelop and expand the facility that was at the time under threat of closure was one made possible by tremendous community support. He personally thanked everyone involved from the residents, family and friends to the architects and builders, Yarra Ranges Council, the Warburton Seventh-day Adventist Church members and the Advent Care Board who, he said, had faced many challenges and had made a good decision. Mr Reece had two special ‘thank yous’, for church member Jeff Rippingale “for his dedication and selfless service” and for facility manager Colleen Hilbert who, he said, had been a strong leader throughout the disruption of the building redevelopment. “This would not have been possible without your strong leadership, retaining life as usual for the residents and looking after your staff,” he said. Cr Jim Child said the result was a credit to the community. “This took a solid co-operative approach to get this outcome we see here today,” he said. He thanked the Community Bank for their

The official opening was followed by a tour of the new facilities by invited guests, residents, their families and staff members. The response was joyful. The spacious rooms, modern ensuite facilities, beautiful, locally-produced artwork and outlook to the courtyard all brought enthusiastic accolades. For Personal Care Attendant Nick Licht who showed his parents Alex and Janet through his new workplace, it was about the potential for an enhanced life experience for the residents, and new facilities such as lifting equipment that would help staff achieve that. “It’s about the liveability, the beautiful, light facilities, open showering rooms and other equip-
ment that will make taking care of residents easier,” he said. The second stage, expected to be completed mid-2018 will provide a further 13 new resident rooms, a second new courtyard and upgraded dining and lounge area and reception area. When complete, the facility will increase from 31 to 42 beds and will serve the community of the Warburton and Yarra Valley. “We are fortunate to have an excellent builder in Australian Building Enterprise and the work has progressed smoothly despite some unforeseen challenges in upgrading an older building,” Mr Reece said. “We look forward to being able to provide permanent and respite residential care in Warburton for many years to come.”

Forest and park tracks and roads across Melbourne’s south-east, including those in Yarra State Forest, will re-open on Thursday, 2 November, in time for the Melbourne Cup weekend. Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning Senior Forest Management and Roading Officer, Monica Mains said, “Roads and tracks are closed temporarily to protect them from damage during the wetter months each year as part of our seasonal road closure program.” “These roads and tracks were closed over winter and spring for public safety and to protect track surfaces as well as water quality and the forest environment,” Ms Mains said. “We want all drivers to obey any signs, such as track closures and detours that they encounter in the bush.” “The Forest and Park environment is a wonderful place to visit. However, we want people to be mindful of the camp fire regulations and ensure that camp fires are maintained and left in a safe condition. With the onset of warmer weather, it is critical that we work together to minimise the potential spread of bushfires. “While we have made every effort to ensure visitors have access for the opening weekend, drivers need to be prepared to come across fallen trees and other debris in some places.” “We would like to thank the many Four Wheel Drive Victoria volunteers who put in hundreds of hours of work to assist with the maintenance and promotion of seasonal road closures for the ongoing protection of Victoria’s parks and forests.” Visitors are encouraged to obtain the most upto-date information on access into forest and park areas before they travel. For more information about road closures and changes of conditions go to http://www.parkweb. vic.gov.au or check the Public Access Map at https://www.ffm.vic.gov.au/visiting-state-forests/ forest-and-road-closures.

A pro-show space for all By Derek Schlennstedt Art work from the students at Wandin Yallock Primary school will be displayed at Mont De Lancey until 1 November. Students will have their work displayed at the exhibition area at Mont De Lancey as part of an annual program between the school and the historic homestead which gives students the opportunity to display their work to the general public. Art teacher Courtney Sharp said the exhibition was a “special event for the students as they get to exhibit their work in a professional enviornment. “Because it’s not at school and in a professional exhibition space it makes it more special for the students, she said. “It’s a great opportunity for it to be in a professional space and it takes their work to another level. “They’re proud of their work in a classroom and then they get here and see it up and they’re even more proud of it and it’s really exciting for them. The display includes a range of diverse art work including clay work, photography work and even self-portraiture. The students from Prep to Grade 6 have worked all year towards the event, and it includes all the work the students have done throughout the year. Principal Trevor Vass said it gave students a real thrill to see their work on the wall at a public exhibition. “Student artwork often ends up at the bottom of a kid’s bag smudged and crunched up, so to have it on display is great and we are really lucky to have that relationship with Mont De Lancey, Mr Vass said. “The kids get a real thrill coming up and seeing it on the wall and being able to show it to there families, especially the younger kids ... they don’t often get a chance to show off what they can do so
Part of the student work included self portraiture.
A year’s worth of art work by students at Wandin Yallock Primary School is being displayed at Mont De Lancey. it’s a great opportunity for that to happen. The exhibition will be open to the Public at Mont De Lancey until 1 November.

Fit for a Pallas I write with great interest and concern about the parcel of land called The Green on the corner of River and Green streets in Healesville. It appears that VicTrack is determined to cash this in and to hell with what the residents of Healesville and visitors want. This is a very important parcel of land for our Sunday market and the many people I observe relaxing there with their children. We fought this battle to retain this land for parkland in 2012 and thanks to the then mayor, Cr Jim Child, we considered we had a victory for the people. As for myself I always thought that VicTrack would return to plunder our town parkland. What should be done? My philosophy has always been that 90 per cent of our lives are determined by politicians. Unfortunately I don’t have confidence in our state MP Cindy McLeish to take militant verbal action against the Minister for Treasury and Finance, Tim Pallas, who I believe would have the final say.
College cheers $2 million grant Students in the Yarra Valley will soon enjoy new and refurbished senior school facilities. Minister for Education James Merlino returned to his former school Mount Lilydale Mercy College on Friday to announce that the school will receive a $2 million funding boost. The $2 million investment will support the first stage of the school’s upgrade, which includes a new VCE Learning Commons building featuring a new senior library and two levels of general purpose classrooms. The second stage of the project will involve the construction of a new three-level classroom block, staff offices and associated spaces. The existing library will also be refurbished to provide a new visual arts hub. The new learning space will be of enormous benefit to the college, which allows students to move through Years 10 to 12 at their own pace.

In a recent statement to the parliament (19 October), the Member for Evelyn, Christine Fyffe, managed to reduce comment on the CFA and gender equality to an all-time low when she targeted the Premier, Daniel Andrews, on a matter completely unrelated to the issue. If Ms Fyffe and her Liberal parliamentary colleagues would allow the facts to get in the way of the story, we would likely see the end to the current discord. Pam Vroland, Silvan.

It would take one phone call from the Minister to the head of VicTrack directing him to negotiate the transfer of this land to the Yarra Ranges Council, so I appeal to all ratepayers and visitors who value this public land to write directly to the Minister at his electoral office at the following address: 2/56-58 Watton Street, Werribee VIC 3030. Mayor to make way By Peter Douglas
Cr Cliff also acknowledged the support of his close friend and deputy mayor, Len Cox. Interestingly, Cr Cliff felt a 12-month mayoral term ideal, despite the Victorian Government pushing for a mandatory two years. He said many councillors deserved the experience and it added leadership to council. At the Burrinja meeting, Cr Tony Stevenson was among the most vocal when expressing his congratulations to Cr Cliff. “Your initiative to take council on the road ... has been well received by each of the townships,” Cr Stevenson said. “People may feel that council is quite insular, removed from the public, even though that’s clearly not our aim. I feel what you’ve done will help break down those barriers.” Cr Stevenson said he had not heard a negative word about the initiatives. 12369656-ACM44-17
Cr Noel Cliff is only too content to hand over the mayoral robes next month, satisfied he’s ticked off all his ambitions during his inaugural 12-month term. As Yarra Ranges Council prepares to vote on a new mayor on Tuesday 14 November, Cr Cliff said he had thoroughly enjoyed his first stint as mayor after more than 15 years on council. Chief among his goals included “bringing council back to the community”, which he said was achieved through taking council on the road and via the Mayor’s Big Day Out event. Both exceeded his own expectations, with the travelling council initiative stopping by at Healesville, Warburton, Montrose and Upwey. The Mayor’s Big Day Out was enormously successful, attracting hundreds of guests. Speaking after his final meeting as mayor - at
Burrinja Cultural Centre on Tuesday 24 October - Cr Cliff said he wanted to show a different side to council. “When I got this role, the only thing I wanted to do was bring council back to the community,” Cr Cliff said. “I felt there was a void. I wanted to make the community and staff know that councillors can be warm and welcome. I’m no robot and definitely not about toeing the mayoral line.” Cr Cliff said he wouldn’t have been able to achieve so much without the support of his fellow councillors and Yarra Ranges Council staff. He said the behind-the-scenes work to ensure both initiatives ran smoothly was first-class. “What a ripper the Mayor’s Day Out was. That exceeded my wildest dreams. To have so many musicians and people turn out for the day. It was just fantastic to see,” Cr Cliff said.
It’s hard not to smile when a mountain pygmypossum pops in to see how you’re going. As part of National Children’s Week, Healesville Sanctuary teamed up with the Monash Children’s Hospital on Wednesday, 25 October, to bring smiles and laughter to the hospital’s young patients. Healesville head vet and acting director, Dr Rupert Baker, sanctuary keeper James and rangers Anna and Lotti also took along a barking owl, a stick insect and a tawny frogmouth for the sanctuary’s seventh wildlife visit to the Royal Children’s Hospital. “The magic of children interacting with animals is incredible to see first-hand and it is so rewarding to be able to provide a fun distraction for sick kids,” Dr Baker said. It’s the first time the sanctuary team visited the new Monash Children’s Hospital which opened in April this year. The hospital includes an innovative visiting pet park in the wilderness garden with an enclosed outdoor space specifically designed with appropriate surfaces and water troughs to allow families to bring in their pets from home to visit children who are inpatients. “This would be a great space for dingo puppies to come and visit in the future,” Dr Baker hinted. So, watch that space for some dingo antics next year?

The family of Anne Jones is aiming to reach $25,000 this year for Alzheimer’s Australia Victoria as their Ride to Remember - Yarra Valley comes up to its fifth year. Bryn Jones and daughters Kylie and Kirsty, started the ride on the first anniversary of Anne’s death in 2013 from Lewy body disease. Anne was school secretary at Healesville Primary School for 17 years and involved in many community groups over the almost four decades that she lived in Healesville. “Our fund-raising total has reached $21,000 over the past four years, and this year we aim to extend that total to over $25,000 with the generous assistance of friends, family and anyone who has been touched by the cruel disease that is dementia,” Kirsty said. Lewy body disease is caused by degeneration and death of nerve cells in the brain and there is no known cause or risk factors identified. There are four distances to the ride which will take place along the picturesque Warburton Trail on Sunday, 19 November. Kirsty said the ride, or walk, was geared to suit people or any age or fitness levels.
Ride or walk, The Ride to Remember Yarra Valley is a great way to enjoy the Warburton Trail and raise much-needed funds. “It is an opportunity to enjoy a lovely day out with family and friends and ride with us for a great cause,” she said. A gourmet barbecue lunch will be available at Warburton. The centenary of the publishing of C.J. Dennis’ ‘The Glugs of Gosh’ was marked at this year’s C. J. Dennis Poetry and Short Story Competition weekend with a performance of the highly satirical political work by members of the C. J. Dennis Society. The weekend of celebrations, held at Dennis’ former home, The Singing Gardens, in Toolangi on 21 and 22 October attracted poetry and short stories from poets of all ages competing in honouring the style of Dennis, ‘the people’s poet’. Society member and current owner of The Singing Gardens, Jan Williams, noted it is 10 years since the start of the festival. “Each year we salute the genius who was Den and each year great poets lay their works at his feet,” she said. Commenting on the quality of the writing, and in particular the inaugural short story award, judge Daan Spijer commended those who took up the challenge. “It is not easy to tell a story well in only five hundred words, so I was pleased that quite a number of storytellers took the challenge and carried it off,” he said. The award went to David Campbell for his ‘Constable Og and the Bits and Bobs’, described by Mr Spijer as “ ... a clever and very funny extrapolation of Dennis’ tale of a benighted mythical land.” The festival concluded on the Sunday with Moving Theatre featuring the life and times of Dennis and his contemporaries Banjo Paterson and Henry Lawson presented by society members David Campbell, Stephen Whiteside and Jim Brown, along with a delightful presentation by members of the Cathy Ridley Ballet School performing ‘The Glug Quest’.

An independent woman OBITUARY Lorna Mary Brown (Mahnken)
By Melissa Donchi Lorna Brown passed away peacefully in her own home at the age of 95 on Friday 6 October. She had been a much-loved resident of Healesville for over 50 years. She was perhaps best-known to locals as the proprietor of the historic El Rancho cabin park in Healesville during the 1950s. Over the course of her life Lorna raised four children who knew her proudly as a totally independent woman. Lorna was born in Lilydale, Tasmania in 1922 to parents Rose (O’Doherty) and Jim Mahnken. She grew up on a farm with her younger brother Pat where she learned how to milk cows, ride horses, and skin rabbits. While life was hard during ’20s and ’30s she remembered them fondly as busy in a loving family. She was expected to leave school and take care of the home, but Lorna had no intention of doing that. Lorna moved to Hobart and then Melbourne during the 1940s and worked a range of different jobs. She operated a ticket counter at the Flinders Street rail station and worked as a telephonist on a switchboard. It was during these years she met her husband Donald Brown and had her first two children, Ian and Janene. When their house in North Melbourne was destroyed in a fire in 1950 they moved to a property in Healesville that Lorna named El Rancho. The previous owner had built little cabins on the property for his relatives to stay in, and Lorna saw an opportunity for a business. She subsequently built two more cabins and fitted them out with basic amenities, while managing all the inquiries, tenancies, record-keeping and finances. During the 1950s many migrants, timber workers and a great variety of others came to call Rancho home. As a single mother in the 1960s Lorna faced
enormous challenges and never gave up, no matter how bad things got. When a former tenant refused to pay his rent, Lorna took him to court and won. When she was scraping together funds to build a home for her family she had a battle to get a mortgage approved as she was a single woman. While life was hard, she bravely chose to persist and the results eventually paid off. For 30 years, until he passed, Lorna and her friend Jack Hilet were great companions for one another. They went on many memorable holidays around Australia and to some parts of Asia. Lorna’s grandchildren loved visiting them up at the Rancho property where they kept chooks and Shetland ponies and a wonderful backyard filled with beautiful trees and plants. She lived the last two decades on her own in Healesville, in her last house which she undertook the construction of at the age of 78. She made sure each day counted. She was a stickler for routines - Jon Faine would be switched on first thing in the morning, the house would be cleaned, then there would be a shower and breakfast. She grew her own vegetables, made her own bread, and crocheted special rugs for all of her grandchildren. Lunch was at 12pm and dinner was at 5pm. Her regular visitors always knew there was a pot of green tea waiting for them whenever they turned up. Lunch was some home-made bread with salad leaves from the garden and left overs from her well-stocked fridge. If she wasn’t at home she was down the street paying her bills at the post office, doing her banking at the Commonwealth, shopping at Coles, or borrowing at the library. Often it took her much longer to do these things because she would run into so many people she knew down the street. She loved reading the local Mountain Views newspaper and took a keen interest in local events. The week that she passed away as always had been a busy one for her. She was texting from a hand-me-down iPhone, sending emails from her new Mac computer, taking a day trip on the bus
Lorna Brown - an independent woman. 174458 with her local out and about group, organising for her concrete front yard to be resurfaced, and of course keeping up with all her usual routines. One of her most enduring legacies is a collection of beautifully written diaries that span many decades, as well as perfectly edited memoirs to be collated into a book to remind the future generations of another time and place that was Lorna.
She lived such a full and busy life it was a shock to her family to lose her so unexpectedly, because even at 95 she made it seem as though she would live forever. She will be missed by all who were lucky to have known her, and remain an inspiration to independent women everywhere.

Oh, listen to the music By Kath Gannaway Healesville Musical Festival is almost here ... with more than 30 performances on the bill set to provide non-stop music over the weekend of 10, 11 and 12 November. Now in its eighth year, the family friendly festival aims to support the Yarra Valley’s diverse population of local musicians and its cultural diversity as well as showcasing world-class touring artists in a music festival atmosphere like no other. With performances in multiple venues in beautiful Healesville town, street performers, a bush dance, Saturday community market, workshops, food stalls, camping at the beautiful Healesville racecourse, a fun children’s program and a poets’ breakfast, the festival is a feast of entertainment and fun. Among a spectacular line-up are The Northern Folk, John Flanagan Trio, The Royal High Jinx, Yusupha Ngum and The Affia Band and Didirri. The Black Harrys, Strings N Things, Kurt Gentle, Red Raven Morris Dancers, The Humbuckin’ Pickups and The Anecdote ... just a random pick of the total line-up of exceptional talent that includes international and major national artists, as well as the cream of local talent and up and coming young artists. Workshops add to the festival experience with opportunities to actively participate in the festival, learn and have fun. This year they include singing, guitar, ukulele, harmony singing and songwriting. The calibre of the ‘tutors’ will astound you! Other activities include a massed string band, Platypus Project activities, the creation by visual artist Paul Sonsie of an urban mural in real-time over the weekend, Shadow Dancing and two amazing community choirs.
There'll be plenty of High Jinx at this year's festival. Sounds exhausting! Don’t worry. The festival organisers want to make sure no-one misses a thing with McKenzie's buses and the Rotary
Club of Healesville providing a free shuttle bus between venues. Tickets are through trybooking.com/QTZS.

U3A’s riot of colour in a show with get up and go By Derek Schlennstedt Once again the theatrical group of Healesville, U3A will be opening their new and fourth production called the “Fun Times Musical Skit.” The aptly titled show has everything its name suggests and is full of laughter and riotous fun. With amazing costumes and great props, all shown in brilliant technicolour, Lois Thwaites, writer and producer for the show said it was their best show yet and one ‘not to be missed’. “This year we’ve decided to do a huge musical extravaganza which starts and flows right through to the interval and the big musical production at the end,” Lois said. “It’s got music in it, acting in it and a storyline, it’s got all of that ... whereas normally it’s just a
plain concert but this year it’s totally different and there is a really nice flow happening.” The show itself has many different acts to it and is set in Australia, New York and even Nottingham Forest - where you might see Robin Hood and his merry men. Incidentally, one of the cast members, Healesville’s very own Julia Hadlow has a connection to the real Earl of Locksley. With a comedy skit, pantomime, and various musical numbers all featured in the production, there is something for everyone and Lois said the theme was just to have some fun. “We’ve got excerpts, and musical numbers from show tunes and it’s interwoven into a storyline,” she said. “We use our other U3A groups, not only our

The entire show is two hours long with a 10-minute interval and Lois said the audience could expect laughter, fun and much, much more. “They can expect to have lots of fun, laughter and lots of music; it’s a full-on production.” The production will be held at the Healesville High School Theatre, starting at 2pm on Saturday, 11 November. Tickets are just $5 each - free for children up to 16 years and can be obtained at the door of the Theatre or on Thursday mornings during the line dancing class located at the Senior Citizens Hall corner of River/Green Streets from 10.30am to 12 midday.
Directed by brilliant Kiwi filmmaker Taika Waititi, Thor: Ragnarok is the freshest film from the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a long time. When Hela (Cate Blanchett), the goddess of death, invades the realm of Asgard, Thor (Chris Hemsworth), the god of thunder, finds himself stranded on a distant alien planet. Thor must survive a gladiatorial tournament and assemble a team of heroes to save Asgard. Ragnarok’s characters are exceptionally nuanced. The film features an outstanding culmination of Thor’s steady growth throughout his film series, as he finally sets aside his pride and becomes a truly noble, selfless hero. Thor and Hulk/Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) have endearing adversarial chemistry, with Ruffalo
emphasising Hulk’s childlike nature, and Tessa Thompson is riveting as Valkyrie, a feisty scavenger running from a traumatic past. Blanchett clearly relishes the role of Hela, a haughty, ambitious and entrancing villain who is still slightly sympathetic due to an old betrayal. She’s undoubtedly Marvel’s best, most fleshedout villain since Loki (Tom Hiddleston), who returns as charmingly slimy as ever. Ragnarok is often hysterically funny, with Waititi bringing his proven comedy chops (and clever Aussie in-jokes) to the MCU, but still presents a tight, suspenseful plot with clear stakes and a dire, overwhelming threat to overcome. Dark and poignant yet funny, Thor: Ragnarok’s fascinating villain and the sheer diversity of characters and settings ensure it stands tall both in the Thor series and within the broader MCU. - Seth Hynes

HOME FOCUS
A HOUSE NAMED JEAN NESTLED in a delightful garden - abundant
with natives, succulents, perennials and fruit trees - is this incredible example of Mid Century, Post War Australian Architecture. This home effortlessly blends the original with the contemporary, resulting in an ambience of creativity and, paradoxically, calmness. This home is a time machine, taking you back to a time when we connected, created, and celebrated with each other ... to a time when we would gather around the radio for the latest news and be entertained by The Andrews Sisters latest hit. And then, back again to the mesmerising mountain views ... to the cacophonous chorus from the local birdlife ... to the peace, and the serenity that only Clarke Avenue affords its fortunate residents. Offering two generous bedrooms, a very spacious open plan original kitchen, with a dining and living area that opens onto a covered verandah, perfect for a cup of tea. Additionally, there’s a separate artist’s studio and workshop that provides a multitude of options for your lifestyle enjoyment. The current owners should be applauded for their unparalleled commitment to retaining this home’s integrity, while simultaneously ensuring modern comforts. ●

Rovers still undefeated By Chris Anderson YARRA VALLEY CRICKET ASSOCIATION With a blink of an eye, we are a quarter of the way through the cricket season; and with the unpredictable October weather being favourable, cricket in the valley hasn’t missed a beat. This weekend saw the top grades play the fourth one dater in a stretch of six, while the lower grades will now move into a stretch of two day games. This weekend’s game in the combined topflight saw teams competing against their own bracket for the second time this season. Mount Evelyn and Yarra Glen entered the round with unbeaten records, so their Round 4 clash would end that status for one of the teams. Yarra Glen have impressed thus far after battling through their first season in the top grade last season, and they opted to bat first after winning the toss. In-form John O’Donnell (32) started the clash with a bang, and with a couple of lusty blows gave the Riverpigs the momentum. After losing an early wicket, O’Donnell paired with Brendan Ricci (24), and the pair battled it out against some disciplined Mount Evelyn bowling. Eventually, the Rovers were able to remove the dangerous O’Donnell, and with Ricci battling to hit the scoreboard, the home team were able to turn the screws on the Yarra Glen batsmen. Yarra Glen were able to keep wickets intact, and a late flurry of scoring courtesy of Richard Ellisdon (26) saw them push the score out to a respectable 9/134. Mount Evelyn’s top order have been in sound form this season and have rarely failed, and another excellent opening partnership from Daniel Giblin (50) and Jesse Fraser (33) had them quickly on the path to victory. Despite losing a glut of wickets at the end to the hand of Corey Parrant (3/37), the home side secured an impressive five-wicket victory with 11 overs to spare. Warburton-Millgrove returned to the winners’ list, after a couple of uncharacteristic losses, with a dominant victory over Healesville. Healesville batted first and scraped their way to 139. Opener Scott Hamer gave the innings momentum with an excellent half-century, but the innings stalled through the middle overs courtesy of some excellent bowling from brothers Daniel (3/24) and David (3/30) Lever. Returning young star Dermott Fry (23) gave the innings some respectability with some lateorder runs. The determined Burras weren’t about to let this opportunity slip as their collective batting machine kicked into gear. The home team took their time, but they were always in control of the chase, losing just two wickets on their way to a commanding eightwicket victory. The four batsmen used, led by Liam Barnard (46 not out), spent some valuable time at the wicket as the reigning premiers will view this as the first step in getting their title defence back on track. In the final clash of the Strachan Shield teams, Yarra Junction got their first taste of defeat as they were outlasted by Seville in a low scoring contest. Seville opened the contest with the bat, and lasted the distance against some disciplined bowling from the Eagles. Newly-appointed coach, Ranga Yasalal (30), gave the innings some momentum up front, while some attacking batting at the end from Tom Page (33 not out) saw the total end at a respectable 9/131. Brad Nightingale (2/20) and Nick Lawlor (2/33) were the best of the bowlers in an even performance.
Mount Evelyn opening batsmen Daniel Giblin notched up a well-earned, match-sealing 50 for his team. Picture: GREG CARRICK Yarra Junction have made short work of their chases this season, but this was anything but, as the blow torch was applied early. Seville’s opening duo of Matt Hadlum (3/19) and Mark Sandfort (3/19) had something to prove after missing a couple of games and they caught the Eagles in the hop as they quickly removed an in form top order. Despite some resistance from Pat Ford (32), the damage had been done and the Eagles were dismissed for 97, handing Seville their second victory of the season. In the RA Finger Trophy games, Gruyere put together a dominant display with the bat against Launching Place to secure their first win of the season. Batting first, the Scorpions piled on a blistering 4/311 against an overwhelmed Launch attack. Captain Jared Carroll has stood firm in their run of losses, and he again stood up leading from the front with an impressive century. The difference this week is that he found an able partner, this time in the shape of Jack Blain (63) who paired with Carroll for much of the journey. Launching Place had little hope chasing the mammoth total, but to their credit they didn’t waste the opportunity to have some quality time at the wicket. Despite the score being unattainable, the home team batted out their allotted overs with the loss of just four wickets to gain some sort of respect from the contest. Launch captain Andy Vandervlught (47) was the best of the batsmen in a tough loss for his team. After a tough start to the season, Hoddles Creek proved that they will be a finals contender in RA Finger Trophy if they get things right on the day. Batting first against Woori Yallock, captain Luke Hetherington’s fine unbeaten innings of 90
was the foundation of an excellent team score of 4/188. Liam Rowe (48) was his main partner but he did receive support right through the innings. Woori Yallock possess the batting line-up to chase the total, but they quickly found themselves out of their depth against some disciplined bowling. Will Trotter (4/20) and Aidan Robertson (3/27) were the chief wicket takers in an excellent bowling performance from the Wombats as they wiped aside the Tigers for a disappointing 77. In the final RA Finger Trophy clash, Coldstream continued their impressive early season form with a comprehensive victory against Wandin. Wandin batted first, and they battled against some excellent Coldstream bowling. Led by Daniel Sharp (5/16) and Daniel Whelan (2/11), the Crocs didn’t give the Bulldogs an inch as they bowled them out for a mediocre 73. Coldstream didn’t have it all their own way in the chase as Mitch Sinnott (2/10) and Chaudhry Uzman (2/26) ensured their were a few nervous moments, but the Bulldogs total was just not enough, and the Crocs cruised to a comfortable five wicket victory. DJ Strachan Shield and RA Finger Trophy Hoddles Creek 4/188 (L. Hetherington 90*, L. Rowe 48) d Woori Yallock 77 (M. Dwyer 25, W. Trotter 4/20, A. Robertson 3/27), Seville 9/131 (T. Page 33*, R. Healesville 2 travelled to Mooroolbark to play their sixth side and after a very close tussle, came away with a draw 8/81 to 10/81. The No 2 side is sitting on top of the ladder and the No 1 side is sitting third after four games. Healesville 1 16/87 def Bayswater 2 2/70 - R. Patterson 24/11, T.Pye 22/15, S. Graham 28/10, B. WARBURTON BOWLS Warburton 1 came up against their hardest test so far in Division 1, with Pakenham 1 proving to be too good on their quick green, losing 82 to 92. Rink scores: B. Woods 18/22; J. Brookes 26/21; J. Van Der Zweep 21/25 and P. Woods 17/24. They play Burwood District 1 away next week in another very challenging game. Warburton 2 led at the break before Croydon 3 hit back hard in the second half to create a handy lead. They fought back well towards the end but just fell short going down by one shot, 73 to 74. Rink scores: G. Wynd 16/17; P. Summers 14/25; P. McConachy 20/11 and S. Mahoney 23/21. They play Chirnside Park 2 at home.
Fortunately, the club could field a Warburton 3 side this week against Chirnside Park 5 and won 42 to 26. Rink scores: R. Newing 28/9 and N. Donohue 14/17. Highlights were young Tyler Van Der Zweep getting through a tight gap of opposition bowls twice to trail the jack. Also, Ron Newing took shot at an important time when the opposition were holding 4 shots. Hopefully they get to field a side this week against Glen Eira McKinnon 3 away. The Tuesday Midweek side was defeated by Monbulk 1 away in difficult conditions, 48 to 79. Rink scores: G. Walsh 24/18; S. Mahoney 14/23 and S. Freestone 10/38. They play Ferntree Gully 2 at home this week.
Aussies snare quite the victory WARBURTON GOLF WEDNESDAY Stableford: At Warburton Golf Club, they have a number of ‘dual citizen’ players. One of those members came up with the concept of an Aussies versus The Rest of the World competition. That member, Shaun Nicholl, even donated a unique perpetual trophy for the occasion. On Wednesday, the Aussies came out on top - of course! But, it was a closely run result. The Aussies averaged 30.5 points, aided by a best-on-

day score of 42 from evergreen Ken Barratt. The Rest of the World team averaged 30.3 points. SATURDAY Stableford: Alan Johnson is in a rare vein of form currently, and his 39 points earned him the A Grade voucher. But, that score, as good as it is, pales compared to the B Grade winner. A score of 40+ points is always something to be proud of, but Clint Toohey’s 46 just killed every other score.
