The editor’s desk The much-awaited election has been called and the number of candidates vying for the seat of Noosa is growing. Speculation the two major parties may struggle to gain the majority vote has fuelled the interest of minor parties and independents who hope to achieve their aims by their hold on the balance of power. The potential they see is in what they can achieve for their electorates from major parties bargaining to gain their support. We’ll watch with interest how the election campaign progresses over the next four weeks. In other news the Noosa Tri is back and few teams would be more inspiring than the Bloody Old Buggers. In speaking to team member Jan Picton - who at 81 years of age rides 150km a week - I couldn’t help but feel the need to do more. Look out for them on Sunday.

NOOSA’S QUALITY

2 NOOSA TODAY

A billion dollars! Plenty to boost our progress into a clean and prosperous future by developing and supporting profitable enterprises, deliver real career employment, and create real wealth.

Let’s re-purpose Noosa’s abandoned TAFE site as the Tewantin Small Business Development Centre for re-skilling, retraining, and business skills. We can’t predict what job skills will be needed in the future, but we sure can help people learn to be nimble and acquire new skills along the way.

It’s amazing how some technologies are developed. John O’Sullivan, an astrophysicist at CSIRO, needed a wireless communication system. He came up with WiFi. WiFi has since generated over $750 million in license revenue for Australia’s Future Fund.

WOODHAVEN WAY

A lovelorn guy at university wanted a girlfriend so he developed a peer to peer communications system. Facebook. Its early incarnation was regrettable but it now plays a big role in the lives of many of us.

By real wealth I mean enduring intellectual property: software and technology, and technical and technological skills which people can carry forward through a lifetime of career changes.

WE ARE HERE

Our Federal government has committed $1 billion to subsidise Adani’s train line. That $1 billion is guaranteed by Queensland so we should consider what else we could achieve with that much money.

Small and medium business is already the largest employer group in Australia. Let’s build on that into the future. It’s already great to live in Noosa. Let’s make it an equally great place for those clean and forward-looking businesses which will create real careers.

THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT… OLD BUGGERS HIT THE ROAD Despite their combined age of 233 years, two Noosa Triathon legends and a Noosa Tri first timer have teamed up to tackle this year’s competition under the title Bloody Old Buggers. Markus Hanley, 85, thought he’d retired from triathlons after 25 individual Noosa Tris, the first of which he attended at 58 years of age and the last on his 83rd birthday in 2015. However this year he decided to give it another try, but not alone. It took little convincing to enlist fellow legend Jan Picton, 81, who will take on the cycling leg and compete in her first Tri in five years. The youngster of the group at 67 years is Rod Brown who will tackle the 10km run. Markus entered his first Noosa Tri when a friend suggested they take a look at the event that was then a “newfangle thing”. “I did my first Noosa Tri and I was hooked,” he said.

Jan Picton takes to the road.

Rod Brown and Markus Hanley are ready for the Noosa Tri.

Jan’s last triathlon was at Mooloolaba five years ago when she was 75 but it was marred by a cycling crash two weeks later. The crash may have caused a few difficulties for the woman who founded the Mooloolaba Sunshine Coast

Triathlon Club in 1990 and worked with Garth Prowd to support the Noosa Tri but it hasn’t slowed her. Jan rides 50km from Mooloolaba to Caloundra and back three times a week. A home economics teacher in her younger days, Jan also coached

students in sports, joined in the running and, having also taught physiology, she knew how to keep her body healthy. “I fed it well and exercised and I’ve just kept going,” she said. “I don’t feel any older. When I had the accident they tested my bones and said they were like those of a 40-year-old.” This will be Rod’s first triathlon in 30 years although he had competed many while living in Mackay. He didn’t expect to compete in a Noosa triathlon but took up the opportunity when Markus put it to him. He just hopes he doesn’t slow his team mates down. “I’ve been a runner all my life. I go for a run three times a week for about an hour so I can handle 10km,” Rod said. “I’ve never done a team triathlon before. It puts more pressure on you. You’re running for other people.” The Noosa Triathlon on Sunday 5 November is the premier event of the five-day Noosa Triathlon Multi Sport Festival running this week from 1-5 November. ●

VOTE TO FIGHT MINING

The Sunshine Beach Surf Club finally gets the nod on a face lift.

CLUBROOMS WILL SET A NEW STANDARD A packed meeting in Cooran Memorial Hall votes to act against mining in the region.

Cooloola Community Action Group spokeswoman Bronwyn Marsh.

said their aim was to educate communities. She told the meeting about national trespass laws which enable landowners to say no to exploration teams and said some communities had succeeded in declaring themselves coal and gas mining free. “There are places for appropriate mining and places where it should never happen,” she said. She said mining leases existed locally and were listed on the Department of Mines website with some leases coming up for renewal in 2018.

Cooloola Community Action Group spokeswoman Bronwyn Marsh shared the story of how 1200 community members around Goomboorian and Wolvi had declared their region coal mine and gasfield free in September 2014. About 50 people attended a second meeting on Sunday to discuss taking ongoing action. Helen said their aim was to stay informed of any local mining progress and keep people informed and abreast of their rights. ●

Fantastic news for Sunshine Beach Surf Lifesaving Club this week with Noosa Council approving a muchanticipated Development Application. Councillors and council planning staff not only approved the application but went to lengths to applaud the design as fitting with the build environment and the ethos of the Sunshine Beach community village feel. Sunshine Beach architect Andrew Bock in conjunction with Brisbanebased Push Architecture have listened to the club’s design brief brilliantly to conceptualise what will become an iconic part of the Sunshine Beach landscape while providing state-of-theart club facilities of restaurant and bar with a modern yet funky approach that is the latest trend around the country.●

12369905-HM44-17

A packed hall of Cooran residents voted overwhelmingly in favour of fighting off any attempts at mining in the region. More than 250 people crowded into the town’s Memorial Hall to watch the film Undermining Australia which was produced by anti-mining lobby group Lock the Gate and join in a discussion that followed. The meeting was organised by Cooran Earth Rights, a local group that formed only six months ago after learning of the existence of mining exploration permits in the region at another meeting called to discuss the threat to the Great Sandy Strait from the re-opening of a mine near Maryborough. Spokeswoman Helen Moffat told the crowd that the group was affiliated with Lock the Gate Alliance but had no political affiliations. She said they wanted to educate people about the effects of mining across the county which resulted in acquisition of private property, loss of farmlands, the destruction of communities and environments. “Some of us decided enough is enough,” she said. BY RON LANE

I

t was the year 2016 and nine-year-old boy Rohan McDonald was sitting on a jet ski just 10 meters from the water’s edge. Sitting behind him, his helper and minder, a qualified and highly experienced Noosa Heads lifesaver was laughing and shaking his head in admiration of his little mate. Born without tibia bones, amputation below the knees had been required. Standing on the beach watching was his proud father Justin. “Look at him,” he said, “he is out there having the time of his life, not frightened, laughing, having a ball and, you know what, it’s all because of the Seahorse Nippers.” It was back in April 2013 that it all started. A member of the management committee of the Noosa Heads SLSC, Steve Mawby, with the full support of his wife Nikki, tabled a concept that would, with club support, start an organisation, the sole purpose of which would be able to cater for children with specific needs. Little discussion was needed and total support was forthcoming. For Steve Mawby and the soon to be formed Seahorse Nipper Club, what they created would not only exist on Noosa’s Main Beach but would, in the years ahead, spread throughout the country and also into the hallowed halls of Australia’s governing body, the National Council. For Steve his career in lifesaving had started at the North Cronulla club in Sydney when he obtained his bronze in1979. It was during his time with North Cronulla that he built a reputation as a competitor, when on several occasions, he successfully took part in the gruelling George Bass Marathon Ski race. Years later, by then a married man living in Threadbo, Steve and his wife Nikki would travel to Pambula, near the Victorian border, on the weekends. “Nikki and I met on a tourist bus on our way to Perisher for a skiing holiday when we were just 20. Eighteen months later we married.” In Pambula, Steve had joined the local surf club and was doing patrols. It was during this time that Steve and Nikki got their first look at lifesavers caring for little children. “However,” said Steve, “it was just a small concern with patrolling members helping the kids.” After some time they shifted to the Sunshine Coast. Nikki joined the Peregian Nippers, worked as an age manager and also obtained her bronze medallion. During this time Steve joined up with the Noosa Heads surf ski team for training sessions. “They were a friendly mob so eventually Nikki and I joined Noosa.” On joining the club Steve soon became a member of the Management Committee and while in office, started discussions regarding the possible formation of a pilot club to help children with special needs. Back at Pambula, two former clubmates, Peter and Michel Boots, had formed a nipper club for these special children and it was going strong. When Steve’s request for a similar project got the go ahead, he immediately suggested the Boots be flown up to Noosa for discussions and guidance. This was agreed to and the foundation meetings were

held. The Noosa Seahorse Nippers were under way. The basic structure was that Noosa would conduct two programs a year for the children, one in April the second in September, at no cost to the parents. However, as with the start of any project, there would be questions building up in the minds of the founders. Will the families support the project and, above all, what would be the reaction of the children? Now all involved know the answers. From the parents it is total support and the kids - they absolutely love it. Financial support was obtained through the Surf Club, Floral Shirts (a private group of professional businessman) and $10,000 grant from the C.B.A. These funds were to be used primarily in the purchase of the necessary equipment and the building of a custommade gear trailer. “Support from our surf club members was outstanding,” said Steve. “To me this was the most important factor of all. With a ratio requirement of two minders to one child, a large membership was vital. “For a project such as this to succeed it needs team work. “Lorna Gardner was with us right from the start as were many others, in particular family groups - the Lansdowns, the Dokons the Glassocks all stepping in to help. “Also, obtaining both Dawn Fraser and Jordan Mercer as Patrons added prestige to our club. Their ongoing support has been great.” Not content to be just figurehead patrons, Jordan can sometimes be seen working as a minder and Dawn walking among the children, chatting and offering words of advice. With the Seahorse Nippers now a reality, more surf club members volunteered and various groups consolidated. “As the background of volunteers became known,” said Steve, “we utilised the capabilities of all people. “It was these people who made our Seahorse Nippers a success - locals who became dedicated or, in the words of Activity Leader Donald McKill, ‘took ownership of their duties’.” One body whose support was vital was the Noosa Council.

Their involvement gave Vietnam vets the opportunity to arrange transport and parking for parents on Seahorse days. The vets, patrolling members of the surf club, working as parking stewards, enabled the parents to get the children, some in wheelchairs, quickly and easily to the beach. Indeed a major contribution. Word of what Noosa had achieved spread quickly and it was not long before clubs, not only in Queensland but interstate, began to follow suit. Now some four years later there are more than 50 clubs throughout Australia with some working under different names. Of these, nine are in Queensland and all use the Noosa Seahorse program. With the success and expansion of the clubs, it was only natural that new ideas regarding all aspects of their work would be forthcoming. As a result a major think tank was organized and in April of 2016 was held in the Noosa club. Attended by club delegates from Queensland, Victoria, N.S.W, Sport and Recreation, Queensland State Centre (our governing body) House with No Steps and several government (local and interstate) representatives, it was an outstanding success. Among the speakers was a young doctor whose address to the delegates regarding the care and welfare of the children was outstanding. For Steve and his team this was to be the first of many such meetings. “We now meet every two or three months,” Steve said, “and this enables the clubs to have their programs and ideas put forward.” Then in November the club, with a major contribution from coach Tim Mandeville, introduced a new concept integration. This was aimed at giving the older and more experienced members the opportunity to be integrated into the Noosa Nipper Club. Parents were handed photographic manuals and these would play a major part in the visual training for the children. Personal coaching techniques were explained and a successful board and swim clinic was conducted on Main Beach by the coach. Parents in attendance were happy with the program. This concept would now give the Seahorse Nippers a great opportunity to move up into the mainstream Nippers. Indeed a major step forward. As a result of the good work of those who have taken ownership of their duties the word has spread. Surf Life Saving Australia is now setting up a parallel committee for special need children. On 20 October, after Steve Mawby had stepped forward at an official function in Brisbane to receive the QBank Award of Ownership (one of five categories in the very prestigious Everyday Heroes Awards) he said: “The Seahorse Nippers is successful because everybody owns it it is not about me.” The coaches, minders, parking attendants, mums and dads, the beach medics and the Noosa Council have all taken ownership and, proud to say, they are all Our People. ●

HUNG PARLIAMENT KINGMAKERS? Independent Noosa candidates former Noosa Shire councillor Sandy Bolton and former Greens candidate for Nicklin Aaron White this week joined five endorsed political party representatives vying for the seat of Noosa in the upcoming State Election on 25 November. Both Independents said they aimed to represent the community without the influence of a political party. “The result of the upcoming election will probably be a hung parliament, and this will provide Independent MPs real leverage,” Ms Bolton said. “Noosa’s vote will count like never before. “This will give me, as an Independent, an opportunity to negotiate beneficial outcomes for some long standing and unresolved issues.” Mr White said having been involved in local, state and federal campaigns,” the resounding message I’m hearing is people have had enough of party political games, hollow promises and the disconnect between the community and the political decisionmaking process”. Also expecting a closely divided contest between Labor and the LNP, Greens candidate Phillip Jenkins urged Noosa voters to choose a Greens

Independent Sandy Bolton. representative on the cross bench. “We’re likely to hold the balance of power, and I hope to use it for Noosa,” he said. Local building designer and well known equality activist Robin Bristow is representing the REASON Party he described as “a party that will challenge the ‘same-old, same-old’, and take a lot of the hot air out of political debate”. “What I like about REASON is that it seeks creative, evidence-based solutions to complex problems solutions that have been held back for far too long by squabbling major parties,” he said. Under the redistribution of electoral boundaries this election, the seat of Noosa gains Pomona and Kin Kin from Gympie and loses Eumundi, Peregian Springs and parts of Coolum to the new seat of Ninderry. Incumbent Glen Elmes will be

Independent Aaron White. contesting the seat he held since being elected to it as Liberal Party candidate in 2006. Mr Elmes was reelected as the LNP candidate in 2009, 2012 and 2015. At the 2015 election, Mr Elmes won the election with 48 per cent of the vote despite a 12 per cent swing against LNP at the time. Greens claimed 21.4 per cent of the vote with then candidate Joe Shlegeris, and Labor were just behind Greens claiming 20.5 per cent of the vote with candidate Mark Denham. Mark Denham will again represent Labor. “This election is a choice between Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, who has restored frontline services or Tim Nicholls, who will again cut jobs and services and sell Queensland assets” he said. Eve Whiteside will be representing the One Nation Party and aims “to ensure Noosa and the region receives a fair share of resources”. Candidates have until 7 November to nominate for the election. ●

The latest addition to the Runaway Marathon Series is Runaway Noosa Marathon to be held on Saturday 26 May, 2018. IRONMAN Oceania, managing director Dave Beeche said Runaway Noosa Marathon was about running a social event with a flat, fast and friendly multilap on road course that starts and finishes in the heart of Noosa. “Athletes can choose from five different race distances from the half lap 5km fun run, the 10km, 21.1km, 31.6km or the full four lap 42.2km marathon. Or grab some friends and take up the two or four-member Team Relay option and share the fun,” he said. For more information, visit www. runawaynoosamarathon.com.au ●

GYM OWNER'S RICHES Sunshine Beach fitness mogul Brendon Levenson has joined the 2017 Financial Review Young Rich List, ranked #47 with wealth of $47 million, rising from #59 in 2016. Brendon, 37, established Jetts 24 hour fitness in 2007 after opening a gym on the Sunshine Coast with his wife Cristy. Brendon is pushing ahead with expansion plans for his Jetts 24 Hour Fitness overseas, a year after selling the business to Quadrant Private Equity in a $100 million deal. TOPS AS A TEACHER

The house was saved from the fire by quick-thinking neighbours.

NEIGHBOURS SAVE HOUSE BY MARGARET MACCOLL The quick action of neighbours to phone the Queensland Fire and Emergency Service saved a house in McAnally Drive, Sunshine Beach from certain destruction on Friday. Noosa Heads acting fire station officer Greg Abbott said they were called to the fire in a shed at the rear of a house about 11am. A neighbour across the street said she’d gone inside to make a coffee when she smelt something burning. She

looked out from her front deck to see black smoke across the road. “My neighbour had already rung for the fire brigade,” she said. Luckily a friend had just arrived to visit the neighbour, so they were out the front. They called triple-zero and called the owners of the property who had left earlier. She said they were discussing getting a hose when firefighters arrived. “They sprang into action and put it out quickly,” she said. Greg said thick black smoke was

billowing from the shed when they arrived and some paint cans stored inside were exploding. He said the owners, having been alerted to it, were right behind them following from the Junction to their house. Greg said three units attended the fire and managed to contain it to the shed without it spreading to the house. With a large quantity of items stored in the shed, it took firefighters a while to extinguish it, he said. “They were really lucky,” he said. “It could have been a different story.” ●

Sunshine Beach State High School teacher Brendan Burgess last week won the National Excellence in Teaching Award after being nominated for it in the community. This year there were 60 NEiTA award winners from 1450 nominations across the country and winners will now compete for 12 national prizes of $5000 each. Mr Burgess has taught English and Humanities at Sunshine Beach for the past 20 years and has co-authored two textbooks for English and History. Mr Burgess likes to create classrooms that are fun, safe and where music is included as background to study, in group participation or where students show up “for a jam before school”. He promotes the idea of being gifted and dedicated, involving hard work to gain success and has a theory that each class develops its own sub-culture that should be embraced by teachers. ●

COUNCIL HALTS PATROL

MAN CHARGED WITH WOUNDING A man has been charged with wounding and possessing property suspected of being used in connection with a drug offence following investigations into a wounding incident in Noosa Heads on 23 October. Police allege about 3pm a verbal altercation outside a unit block on Katharina Street turned physical. Police said during the altercation, a 17-year-old Peregian Springs man received stab wounds to his head and hands.

BY MARGARET MACCOLL Construction of a replacement Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol (QBFP) shed being built by the State Government in Russell Street, Noosaville, has been halted by Noosa Council. A council spokeswoman said the council only became aware of the proposed shed when complaints were received from residents. Neighbours living opposite said the twostorey building blocked their views, caused glaring from the sun and was not consistent with surrounding buildings. A council spokeswoman said it had received advice from the State Government that the shed required development approval from the council and was subject to the Noosa Plan. “Council officers met last week with officers from the Department of Housing and Public Works, who are overseeing the project, to review the plans for the shed,” the council spokeswoman said. “The department has been advised that, based on the information council has received to date, they should cease works and make an application for the Boating and Fisheries Patrol shed. “The application will be required to be publicly notified for comment from the community.” Noosa MP Glen Elmes said the building showed “little or no regard for due process nor has any interest in the community of

Noosa and what it values most - its natural assets”. “No consultation with the community, with local residents and no contact at all with Noosa Council,” he said. “This building resembles a warehouse, contravenes the Noosa Plan and is completely out of character with the Noosa River Foreshore,” he said. Mr Elmes said he could not fathom why this building needed to be so big when he was told in 2016 by then Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries Bill Byrne that QBFP conducted just one patrol of the Noosa River a fortnight.

Noosa Labor candidate Mark Denham said the shed was required to replace an old shed built in the 1960s that was in “a bad state of repair”. “The replacement needed to meet the current and into the future requirements for the fisheries officers,” he said. “This also needed assist in the operation of their equipment in an environmentally safe manner and be able to fit the right size vessel for the protection of this pristine area.” Mr Denham suggested the issue of sun reflection “was possibly caused by the removal of some trees”. ●

Tewantin man Taylor John Moore, 22, was charged with two counts of serious assault and wilful damage following a violent confrontation at Tewantin on Sunday 30 October. Police allege two Noosa police officers were seriously assaulted while investigating a domestic violence matter after responding to reports of a disturbance at a Tewantin address about 6.30am on Sunday. Police said there was an altercation between police and a man at the property. Police used both OC (capsicum) spray and a Taser to restrain the man. ● 12370206-ACM44-17

THE FRIENDLY FILM FESTIVAL BY MARGARET MACCOLL The second Noosa International Film Festival (NIFF) was hailed a success with about 2000 people, including 50 filmmakers, attending four days of films and events across five venues. Some notable events included the Inside Cinema Q&A with film director Rolf de Heer (Bad Boy Bubby, Ten Canoes) and award-winning sound designer James Currie (Ten Canoes, Charlie’s Country). They spoke about their various journeys along different career paths before they found their way into film making during the 1970s and '80s and the challenges of making a career from feature films. “We made it up as we went along,” James said. “We didn’t play by the rules. know what the rules were.” Rolf said it was important to him to make a film he cared about. It took him 10 years to create Bad Boy Bubby, financing it through different jobs and its acclaim gave him the credibility to progress. Other highlights included the screening of The English Patient presented by Academy Award nominee cinematographer John Seale and the Friday night blue carpet opening party. Festival president Campbell Corfe said he was humbled by feedback from James Currie who described it as the “friendly festival” saying he and Rolf were “enamoured by the festival, excellent venues and we were both impressed by your hard-working squad of volunteers that contributed to the festival”. ●

NEWS SENIORS SAFEGUARDS

Promis team Fabio Gagno, Alexander Kohl, Cameron Lawrence, and Neil Rogers.

PROMIS IS KEPT Noosa Junction business Promis Network aims to use a $99,550 State Government grant in its bid to market its automated bill payment platform nationally and globally. Established by Cameron Lawrence and Alexander Kohl, the platform allows invoices to be sent directly into client accounting systems such as Xero, MYOB, Quickbooks and Reckon. By connecting software systems together it reduces the steps in bill paying to a single click or can be fully automated. Cameron said the idea for the platform sprang from his own dislike of the tedium of bill paying and from friends who after working all day in cafes and trades were forced to spend their evenings doing bookkeeping and bill paying. “Promis can be completely managed

from a mobile app or our website. For cafe owners this means that they can operate without being tied down to a computer,” he said. Cameron said their plan was to focus on marketing the business to the Sunshine Coast hospitality industry, as well as developing interest in Sydney and overseas. “We have already spoken with some of the most innovative food suppliers on the Sunshine Coast and they are keen to see this project succeed,” he said. “The business owners can focus on creating more value for their clients and on creating a great business instead of being stuck in paperwork,” he said. Promis Network received their grant from the Advance Queensland Ignite Ideas program. ●

The State Government last week passed new laws to strengthen protections for Queensland seniors looking at retirement options, as well as those already retired. Changes to the Retirement Villages Act 1999 include: · Enabling simplified, standard contracts; · Requiring ongoing fees and charges to be clearly declared upfront; · Introducing a minimum 21 days to evaluate the contract before signing; · Limiting the time for payment of a resident’s exit entitlement; · Making unit reinstatement arrangements before resale fairer; and · Introducing enforceable behaviour standards for village operators and residents. · Changes to the Manufactured Homes (Residential Parks) Act 2003 include: · Limiting rent increases to once per year; · Making the legislation easier to understand; and · Introducing enforceable behavior standards for park owners, staff and residents. COTA Queensland CEO Mark Tucker-Evans said the provision of more transparent information in a plain English format with regards to fees and charges and other aspects of these living arrangements would

ensure that those considering moving into these forms of accommodation have full knowledge before making a major financial and lifestyle commitment. ●

GRANTS RECEIVED Community organisations Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club, Sunshine Butterflies, Smart Pups Assistance Dogs for Special Needs Children and The Board Meeting, will receive $10,000 in grant money. The grants, awarded as part of the 2017 Westpac Foundation Community Grant Program, were given in recognition of their work helping to improve the quality of life for those who are experiencing disadvantage. ●

CASH FOR FARMING The National Landcare Program’s new Smart Farming Partnerships provides multi-year grants of between $250,000 and $4 million to establish new and innovative sustainable land management practices, and to protect and improve the condition of soils, vegetation and biodiversity. Innovative and talented organisations and individuals in the agriculture, fishing, aquaculture and farm forestry industries are invited to apply for the $60 million Smart Farming Partnerships, which opened 19 October and closes 21 December. NOOSA TODAY 15

THE LOWDOWN THREE … Cool ideas for dogs

1

Exercise in the cool Since these are the cooler parts of the day, this will make the walk more comfortable for both you and your dog. If your dog is used to vigorous exercise, this is the time of year to back off on exercise intensity.

2

Hydration Different dogs have different needs when battling the heat. Keep in mind that darker coats absorb more heat than lighter coats. Also, overweight dogs are at higher risk for dehydration. Carry a bottle of water when going on a walk with your dog. Better yet have your dog carry it for you in a backpack or a vest.

3

WHAT A QUACKER OF A DAY The annual Noosa Nipper Duck Race fund-raiser was a huge success, with many ducks heading out on the water last Friday night, a beautiful Noosa sunset behind them. Congratulations to the winning duck #31, who took an early lead and sprinted home to finish first. In conjunction with the Duck race, Noosa Nippers celebrated their 50-year anniversary. It was a delight to have many past Nipper committee members and coaches sharing in the celebration which included the unveiling of the newly refurbished honour board. To have them present alongside current Nipper members was paramount, because without the support of these dedicated founding volunteers, Noosa Nippers would not be what it is today. ●

Digging Your dog may resort to finding his own way to avoid the heat. Dogs in nature dig their dens not out of frustration but to find food, hide, give birth - or keep cool! If it’s possible, locate a shady area where it’s OK for your dog to dig. And remember folks, never never - leave your dog in the car during the day.

The fastest duck on the water is in this box.

Ron Lane, right, ponders who will take out the title of fastest duck.

Crowds gather to send out the ducks as the sun goes down.

What did you want to be when you were growing up? A soccer star. What was your first job? My first job was when I was 14 and was able to ride a little motorcycle. What is your next challenge? Business: My next challenge jobwise is to bring Bio Shop to the next level. Private: My next challenge will be to raise money for an orphanage in Nepal which I support and built a house for the 22 children I am supporting. Another challenge is

already locked in for 2019 to visit Antarctica and write my third book ... by saying that my second book will be about this orphanage and the first one, which is out now, is about Cuba before the Death of Fidel Castro ... I love challenges. What is your favourite dish at the moment? My favourite dish at the moment is turmeric scrambled eggs with smoked salmon and sauerkraut from Vanilla Foods in the Belmondos Organic Market. What is the most important thing in your life? IT’S NONE OF OUR BUSINESS BUT … WINE BY THE GLASS A WINNER

PEREGIAN BEACH GETS A NEW SEAT

A study by University of South Australia’s Ehrenberg-Bass Institute researchers Professor Johan Bruwer and Dr Justin Cohen found making wine by the glass available increased customers’ desire to try new and more expensive wines. “People are keen to try different wines, but they get anxious about buying a whole bottle of a wine that is unknown and untried,” project leader Professor Bruwer said. “The availability of single-servewines helps to overcome this anxiety and encourages customers to be more adventurous with their choices. The research discovered customers who buy wines-by-the-glass tended to choose different wines to those they’d select by the bottle and that opened an untapped market that restaurants could leverage and capitalise. The research also showed that the majority of wine-by-the-glass consumers were female (58 per cent), aged1834 years old (52 per cent), most had a post-secondary education (74 per cent), and an above national median household income (+ $84K per annum). Professor Bruwer said engaging this market might require restaurants to invest in educating their staff about wine and food pairings, as well as providing detailed descriptions of winesby-the-glass on menus.. ●

The Peregian Beach seat saga continues with the arrival of a new, blue bench seat at Beach 51. The seat which marks one residents 90th birthday now joins one placed at Beach 52 by Noosa Council following community upset over council’s removal of a former seat at Beach 52, which had been a popular spot for locals to view the beach and passing whales. ●

NEWS STIFF COMP FOR ADELE CONCERT More than 60 women and girls in Pomona want to be Adele for a day in a competition that will now see 16 females aged from nine to 51 take to the stage for the Adele Tribute Concert. Competition organiser Cherry Bright said whittling down the numbers was a difficult choice with so many amazing performers all vying for prize money of $500 donated by Bendigo Bank. Among the talent is the oldest contestant Di Brown from Tinbeerwah who discovered the joy of performing on stage in her fifties. After discovering a love of music at the age of eight when her parents swapped a caravan for a steel frame upright piano, this led to her playing hymns at church. When she hit her teens, hymns were gone and hims were in. After about 37 years without playing music, at the age of 50 she picked up a ukulele. One thing led to another and she found her way back to the piano. Now she is set for the Adele Tribute “seriously terrified”. One of the youngest contestants is Morgan Lough, 10, who loves singing and is in the school choir. Morgan won the Pomona’s Got Talent Competition this year and will be singing solo at Pomona in the Park

in November. She plays the ukulele, often busks and also sings at the Youth Open Mic Night at The Imperial Hotel Eumundi. The talented Morgan also acts and is involved in drama with Farmhouse Theatre and musical theatre at Dance Form Studio, Cooroy. The Adele Tribute Concert on Sunday 12 November at 2pm is a fundraiser for the Majestic Theatre, an independent community-fun theatre. Tickets on line at www. themajestictheatre.com.au or trybooking.com. Adults $20 or A Class seats at $25, concession $15, students $10 and under 5 is $5. Come along for a fabulous afternoon. ●

Joe Wikaira is a young man going places fast, literally having qualified as the fastest 12-year-old boy in the State over 100m at the recent Queensland Schools Sport State Athletics competition. Joe, a Year 7 student at Good Shepherd Lutheran College, will now travel with the rest of his Queensland teammates to Adelaide for the National Pan Pac School Games competition from 1-5 December. Joe was also chosen from more than 200 athletes to be captain for the Sunshine Coast team. Joe is particularly determined to win the 100m for Queensland this year, as last year he also qualified for the National competition for 100m and 200m, but was unable to compete due to a serious hip flexor injury. Joe hopes to win Nationals and one day be the fastest in the country over 100m. ●

MEDICAL INCIDENT I would like to publicly acknowledge the wonderful assistance I received recently, when I fell ill at Bistro C. One of the staff members ran to the tower at the surf club, and Keating, a lifeguard, came to help. Bistro C staff found an area for me to lie down and called an ambulance, while Keating regularly took my blood pressure and temperature, as we waited for the ambulance to arrive. His ‘bedside’ manner and encouraging conversation was much appreciated and helped me feel much calmer about the situation in which I found myself. To the friends with whom I was lunching, Bistro C management and staff, Keating and the ambulance crew, I say a big thankyou to all. Dawn Kalbrunner, Peregian Springs.

and not be censored or ignored. One would have to think that comments, criticisms and expectations of accountability and transparency of a government, councils or any other organisation should be a beneficial thing. I believe that appropriate comments and criticisms would improve these organisations in the long-term, while banning and censoring writers only shows arrogance and ignorance. Dom Massoni, Verrierdale.

GREEN NEED

HIDDEN SITE I am not a betting person but I would be tempted to put money on the fact that if the Noosa TAFE College was situated on the main road and not hidden behind the cemetery, every effort would be made to fulfil its purpose and definitely not allow it to be seen as the tragic, unwanted establishment it is at the minute. The so-called “Noosa Pride” just would not allow it to be seen in its present state by visitors to our area. Politicians can blame one another, as they have done and always will, for the current situation, but at the end of the day, somebody has to bite the bullet and get on with the job of fulfilling the obvious potential this place has to offer the young people of the wider Noosa area. If it is not to be used for its original purpose, then perhaps those in “power”should call for purposeful suggestions from the community to capitalise on its obvious potential. Whoever is responsible for the building’s future, either government or council, stop the blame game and do something about it now. Name withheld on request, Tewantin.

KEEP LOOKING, KEEP SEARCHING “Search on to end parking woes”. Has this just started? What are their wonderful ideas? Paid parking; at least that will make people move away quicker and spend less time in Noosa. No more lunches in Hastings Street or Gympie Terrace. May turn them away altogether, so is that what you want? Park and Ride; where are we to park? To make the suggestion someone must have ideas. Parking still needed whatever shuttle

Les Lloyd from Noosaville captured a shot of these egtrets sitting on a branch over the top of a fast running creek after the recent heavy rains. “I thought it was unusual to see the two of them together," he said. bus. School students walking; good idea but not very practical in holiday times! Priority Transport Lanes; which Noosa Shire roads are adequate width? Electric vehicles also need to be parked. Not much chance of elderly population taking up cycle. There have been many reasonable solutions put forward by myself and others, not all of which I agree with, but the current mayor is not prepared to consider. Parking will be just as bad, and it is not just Hastings Street, if not worse, by the time the next council elections come around. Ian Lawson, Tinbeerwah.

FREE SPEECH I will quote French writer and historian Henri de Voltaire’s saying on freedom of speech: 'I disapprove of what you say, but will defend to the death your right to say it’. That quote was the standard that most honorable newspapers built their reputation on for generations, but unfortunately things are changing in this wonderful democratic country of ours. Only a few gutsy newspapers have the courage to print everyone's opinion. This sort of authoritarian behaviour reminds me of the communist and fascist treatment of dissidents before wartime. We do live in a free democracy and everyone should have the right to express their opinion

How hard can it possibly be to live within the ecology that gave rise to our existence? Not having the environment in our economy seems to me to be the most stupid bit of blasphemy. They say that human collective intelligence peaked during the Stone Age. Collective intelligence most notably expressed in a harmonious relationship with the ecology that gave life, and on top of this, for all you resource counters, often an abundance of life-giving resources. Scarcity was a function of ecology and was always planned for. Scarcity as realism not the monumentally destructive and completely abstract and fabricated concept it is now, not to mention spiritually annihilating! Another reason it was the peak of human intelligence, corroboree, a time of peaceful discussions/resolutions, exchange of ideas/genes, and possibly some of the biggest parties on earth! Now we have the the pejorative ... economy. It means destroy, hoard, oppress, the height of non-factual non-truth, a completely non-intuitive expression of human drive. The destruction of forests for money is absurd. Bite the hand that feeds you why don’t you, humans. I afraid the Idiocracy is becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy. Dylan White, Doonan.

FEDERAL FUNDS In reference to Greens candidate Phillip Jenkins’ comment about State Government money being used to fund Adani mine, this is incorrect. The Palaszczuk State Government is not providing a cent for this project. It is the Federal Turnbull Government that is planning the loan. Pamela Ashby, Noosaville.

After months of renovations, Good Shepherd’s Little Lambs Early Learning Centre was abuzz with excitement last week with the launch of their new nature playground. Centre director Michelle Hoskins said the playground offered the children a wonderful environment in which to learn and play. “The launch has been met with great enthusiasm and excitement,” Ms Hoskins said. “We are just so thrilled and excited to be able to offer our little ones the chance to explore this new, custom-built area which has been designed as individual outdoor “rooms” that all combine together to create something really magical.” The new playground has spaces such as the creek bed and water pump, mud kitchen, fort and chalkboard, sustainable garden and rock climb. ● noosatoday.com.au

NOOSA TODAY 25

RENTALS FEW AND FAR BETWEEN BY TESSA MAPSTONE “GOOD luck getting into a rental”. That was the message from Living Here Advantage principal Jo Pruss as the Real Estate Institute of Queensland released its latest rental vacancy rates. The latest data revealed that the Noosa rental market was among the tightest in the state, behind Caloundra, the Sunshine Coast hinterland and the Sunshine Coast. Noosa rental vacancy rates dropped from 3 per cent in the June quarter to a tight 1.5 per cent in the September quarter. With a vacancy rate of just 0.6 per cent, Caloundra has become the tightest rental market in Queensland, while the rate in the Sunshine Coast hinterland sits 1.3 per cent and 1.8 per cent on the Maroochy Coast. Ms Pruss said there were few homes available for rent in the Noosa area, and any that came online were being snapped up quickly - one property listed on Sunday night attracted five inquires by Monday morning - and high prices were putting pressure on prospective tenants. “I’m finding quite a few people coming to look at properties who want to be in share housing, because the rates are quite high,” she said. Ms Pruss said 60-70 per cent of prospective tenants she met were locals moving within the area. “The rest are mostly people moving into town from outside the area, from Sydney and Melbourne, Bundaberg and places like that,” she said. HANGloosa Property Noosa business manager Sammii Stjernqvist said the tight

Megan McCaughey and Jo Pruss are faced with more renters than available properties. market would be good for investors. “We have noticed there has been a lot of lease breaks in the past month or two months; a lot of people are moving around or moving interstate,” she said. “All of the properties are leasing quite quickly. “We’ve got heaps of people on our books still looking and we don’t have enough listings.

“It’s a good time to list your property if you have an investment.” REIQ chief executive officer Antonia Mercorella said rental demand was outstripping supply across the Sunshine Coast Statistical Division, which incorporates the Noosa and Sunshine Coast local government areas. “Tenants may struggle to secure rental accommodation in this region, and it is

fair to say this area would benefit from additional supply being built to help improve market conditions,” she said. Ms Pruss said with the limited supply of new housing within the Noosa shire, she did not expect vacancy rates to ease significantly in the near future. “I think long-term for us it (Noosa) is still going to be a good place to invest - for owner occupiers or landlords,” she said. “Tewantin is probably a more affordable place to buy and get decent rental returns. “Anything an investor will buy in Tewantin or Noosaville that is going to return $600 a week will sell very quickly.” The latest data showed a general tightening of the rental vacancy rates across regional Queensland as employment opportunities attract workers, while vacancy rates eased slightly in and around Brisbane. In regional Queensland, the number of weak markets fell from 10 in the June quarter to six in the September quarter. Overall, the Brisbane local government area moved from 3.3 per cent to 3.6 per cent, just crossing into weak territory. “Brisbane has undergone an incredible transformation, with unprecedented levels of apartment supply coming onto the market in the inner and middle rings over the past few years,” Ms Mercorella said. “We are starting to see the impact of that supply as it finally catches up to high levels of pent-up demand. “We are confident that this will be brief because Queensland’s population is continuing to grow, particularly in the southeast corner, and growing population means growing demand for housing.” ●

REAL ESTATE A BOOMING PROFESSION FOR WOMEN BY TESSA MAPSTONE

After winning the HIA Wide Bay award for this Agnes Water Hamptons Style statement home Gibson Building hopes their Verrierdale build will be the next in contention.

PRIZED HOME MAKES GRAND STATEMENT GIBSON Building took out the prize for House of the Year in the Wide Bay region, and now owner Kieran Gibson is turning heads in the Noosa region with an innovative hinterland home, complete with shipping container pool. Faced with a steep and sloping block, the brief was to build a grand, yet ecofriendly home utilising the Verrierdale site’s elevated position and stunning hinterland views. Gibson Building partnered up with a shipping container pool builder to offer an innovative, eco-sensitive and cost effective solution to help the owners beat the summer heat. Mr Gibson said he hoped the firm’s design and build of custom homes would shift the mid-range luxury home market on the Sunshine Coast. “When we’re planning a new custom home build for a client, we favour functional environmental design - design

that is sympathetic to the shape, size and orientation of the block of land, dictated by the direction of the sun, shade and breeze,” Mr Gibson said. “We’ve also partnered with suppliers including a pool builder who uses recycled shipping containers for above ground pools - which is both functional and environmentally friendly, but also adds a unique element to the property that people haven’t seen before.” A multi-award winning home builder, Gibson Building took out the House of the Year award for Queensland’s Wide Bay region at the October HIA Housing Awards for a statement home in Agnes Water. Mr Gibson hoped the Verrierdale home would be the next in contention for the prestigious HIA Award, once complete. “We really focus on a unique style of home that is designed and built to suit the type and location of the land, which varies for every client,” he said. ●

THE property market within Noosa and the Sunshine Coast has boomed in recent years, and the number of real estate professionals has boomed along with it. Census data has revealed a 22 per cent growth in the number of real estate agents working in Noosa and the Sunshine Coast since the 2011 census - rising from 2272 to 2775 in 2016. And women make up 59 per cent of all workers in the property operators and real estate services category in the region. Century 21 Conolly Hay Group agent Rachel Sellman is among those women making their mark in the soaring industry. Coming from a family (the Clout family) heavily involved in building, design and development, Mrs Sellman was always interested in the industry and worked in a range of roles from sales administration to permanent rentals, holiday rentals and as a personal assistant, but she never imagined she would become one of the local industry’s most sought-after agents and top performers. “I’ve been very fortunate since starting in the role of sales,” she said. Mrs Sellman said her success as a sales agent came after learning every aspect of the business over many years. “I do think that you need to have a background in real estate and the property market,” she said. “I’ve always been encouraged and supported by my principals and colleagues. “It is very important to have the right mentor to guide you in this industry.” Real Estate Institute of Queensland chief executive officer Antonia Mercorella said the growth in agent numbers aligned with expectations, considering how well the market had been performing.

“We know that the profession grows when the market is performing well and the over the past five years the Queensland real estate market has delivered steady, sustainable growth, particularly in the southeast corner,” she said. “It’s a great job for communicators and generally speaking, women are considered to be great communicators. “It’s a career that can fit around the commitments of kids and family and this has proven especially attractive to women. “Equally, this is a career that is very well suited to men, who find that it is a career that rewards the effort that is put in - basically it’s a great career choice for both men and women!” ●

LIVE

DANCE CRAZY

AT VERRIERDALE BY MALCOLM PRENDEVILLE When the moon is full and sits high in the night sky, hundreds of like-minded individuals gather in an arty eclectic hall to celebrate their love of first class live original music and foster a vibrant community spirit. On 4 November we are proud to present the fabulous jazz/reggae act KOOII on their national tour. Following this we have the amazing Darren Percival with his soul group Funkalotamus and then the great sounds of the NZ reggae band PAUA (pronounced pawa - the Maori name for abalone). In addition to this we have an awesome live DJ Favourite Son mixing up the grooves in the outdoor garden area. This year marks the 30 year anniversary of the Full Moon Dances at Verrierdale noosatoday.com.au

Hall. The first dance was kicked off by the fabulous local musician Barry Charles on 14 November, 1987. As a local Verrierdale resident at the time, Barry called the first show “The Lost Lamington Show” and they were soon known as the Lamington Shows, then for a while the Bunya Beat Ball until eventually they were named the Full Moon Dance. These early shows were high energy and possessed the wicked humour and eccentricity of their host Barry. They were instantly iconic in the eyes of many. Eventually Barry wanted to tour more so Steve Tracey stepped in to run them for the next few years presenting mostly local bands. During this time they continued to be the best night out for many. While I was there operating the sound for all the early Lamington Shows it wasn’t

till 2008 that I picked up the mantle to run the events myself. I started with the intention to bring a fresh range of awesome acts to the Coast. I took the stand that if I could build a trust with the patrons, that whatever band is playing, even if people hadn’t heard of them, they would always be quality ... then it would succeed. This has proven to be right. It’s a feather right out of Bill Hauritz’s cap (CEO Woodford Folk Festival) for whom I worked for over 20 years as the festival’s technical production manager. The only thing missing from the old days is the huge bonfire we used to have in the bar garden area, that provided a great atmosphere. However with all the strict insurance regulations this became unsustainable. I haven’t given up on the

dream of getting the fire back though. It will come again one day! The Full Moon Dances held at Verrierdale Hall are regarded by many local residents as being one of the Sunshine Coast’s best kept secrets. It is hard to say these amazing dances are still a secret however, as every event attracts great crowds with patrons flocking in from all over Queensland. Anonymity was actually never going to be sustainable for the Full Moon Dances, with red hot national acts, such as, OKA, King Tide, Tijuana Cartel, The Upsteppers, Dubmarine, Jeff Lang, Band Of Frequencies, Bombino (to name but a few) headlining these events in recent times. As a consequence the Full Moon Dances have gained attention throughout our region and beyond. ●

Pacific Daydream, by Weezer

Daughter of Empire, by Pamela Hicks

Red Dog at Cooroy Library Rooftop

By now you either like Weezer or you don’t. Their 11th album, Pacific Daydream, sounds suspiciously young, the audio equivalent of a couple of kids in a trench coat or one adult band wearing a teenager’s T-shirt. Honestly, the bulk of the tracks feel more like a Weezer musical as written by One Direction, like they were aiming for top of the pops by way of paint by numbers construction and bland overproduction. What was once a boyish proto-geek genuflection is now a group of 40-somethings crooning over pyrrhic rhythms about beaches and heartbreak while the world gently burns. The results feel a little off-putting and perhaps forgettable so this one is really just for die-hard Weezer fans. ●

Brought up by two remarkable parents, Pamela Mountbatten, straight from school, found herself swept up in the historical events taking place in India when her able father was appointed last Viceroy of India, with the task of smoothing the way to partition and selfgovernment. Despite riots, bloodshed and turmoil during which her mother’s bravery was very evident, warm friendships were established. On returning home Pamela became Lady-in-waiting to Princess Elizabeth and accompanied the Royal Party on the 1952 Commonwealth Tour. ● - Jenny Carter, of Friends of the Noosa Library

Head along to the Cooroy Library Rooftop for 'Red Dog: True Blue’ on the Starry Nights outdoor movie screen on Friday 3 November. When 11-year-old Mick (Levi Miller) is shipped off to his grandfather’s (Bryan Brown) cattle station in the remote Pilbara region of Western Australia, he prepares himself for a life of dull hardship. Instead, he finds myth, adventure, and a friendship with a scrappy, one-of-a-kind dog that will change his life forever. It’s always good to get there in time to get yourself a comfy spot and set up your blankets and picnics, in preparation for the screening to start around 6.30pm(ish). Entry to the movies is by donation. ●

WHAT’S ON NOOSA’S BIGGEST PARTY ON WHEELS

The Lipstick Dreams cast prepares for production.

Picture: TRAVIS MACFARLANE

Come on guys, take your lady out to the best party in town - on wheels. If you are looking for something fun to do at night in Noosa, then you must try this - Men and Women’s Roller Skate Night. The next one is on its way, so find a pair of skates and join the fun on 11 November. The theme of the night is Rocky Horror Picture Show so dress up if you dare. All abilities and all ages over 18 (kids can watch) come together for three hours of laughs, games, tunes and fun from 6.30pm to 9.30pm as the Noosa Leisure Centre is transformed into a huge skating rink. This is like one big party on wheels and is a must-do Noosa experience. The cafe and bar is open and the cost

is just $15 entry, so grab your partner or friends, BYO roller skates (no inlines) and try something different for a Saturday night. If you are trying it out for the first time or haven’t skated in years, be assured, you won’t be the only one. Rocky Horror dress up is optional but feel free to get creative with your skater flare. If you can’t make it for the skate night, check out the regular Sunday morning Over 18 Women’s only skating sessions from 10am to noon for $12, byo roller skates* at the Noosa Leisure Centre. *A small number of skates are available to hire at an extra $5 if you jump onto Tewantin Noosa Rollers Facebook page and request a pair. ●

FUN AND GAMES ALL IN LIPSTICK Noosa Art Theatre’s next production is Lipstick Dreams written by Simon Hopkinson and Helen O’Connor, and is a light-hearted look at the lives of four very different people, each with their own dreams and disappointments. The play is set in the Blue Heaven ladies hairdressing salon in a small country town. Jo, the manager, is advised by the bank that the salon is no longer a viable concern. Since ‘Brett and the boys’ opened a salon across the road, Jo and her employees haven’t been taking enough to cover the tea bill let alone the interest repayments

to the bank. So, with the help of her employees, Jo enters a talent quest at the local Chinese restaurant in the hope that if they win, the publicity would start bringing the customers back. Cut Price Preview - 16 November, all tickets $22. Evenings - 18, 23, 24, 25 November at 7.30pm. Matinees - 18, 19 November at 2pm. Sunshine Butterflies Charity Performance - 22 November at 7.30pm, all tickets $40 includes a light supper at interval. Tickets $31, Concession $27, Member/Group $25, Under 18 $22. UPSIDEDOWN MINI BLACKBERRY CHEESECAKES

COOK

INGREDIENTS 1/2 x 300g packet frozen blackberries. 1/3 cup caster sugar. 8 butternut snap biscuits. 1 small lemon. 250g tub spreadable cream cheese. 300ml tub thickened cream. METHOD 1. Place blackberries in a bowl with two tablespoons sugar. Toss mixture gently to combine. 2. Using a food processor, pulse the biscuits until roughly chopped. 3. Finely grate lemon, then juice. Using an electric mixer, beat cream cheese until smooth. Add lemon rind and juice. Beat for 30 seconds or until smooth. Add remaining sugar and half of the cream, beating until just combined. 4. Whip remaining cream to soft peaks. Place half the blackberry mixture in the base of six one-cup-capacity glasses. Dollop with half the cream cheese mixture. Repeat layers. Sprinkle with biscuit crumbs. Serve with whipped cream. Note: Fresh or frozen raspberries or blueberries can be used instead of blackberries. You could use almond biscotti in place of the butternut snaps. Enjoy your Melbourne Cup Day beside the spectacular Noosa River this year at Sirocco.

BE A STARTER AT CUP LUNCH Sirocco Noosa invites you to join in the excitment and colour of this year's Melbourne Cup. Located on the beautiful Noosa river, they have created a stunningly orchestrated four-course luncheon for just $79.90 per head. With only the best and freshest produce, local seafood and quality beef, Sirocco’s Melbourne Cup menu has been perfectly paired with the sophisticated Highgate Wines. Enjoy a glass of bubbles on arrival and indulge in the scenery while watching the race on the big screen. Starting off with your meal to share with Sirocco marinated olives, spice roasted nuts and hummus, served with za’atar flatbread, matched nicely with the Highgate bubbles, highlighting green apples and citrus

supported by a subtle creaminess. Entrees will be served with your choice of a local spanner crab and celeriac remoulade with apple, walnut and gazpacho dressing or quail saltimbocca with sweet and sour peaches, radicchio and vincotto jus. Choose from a glass of Highgate chardonnay full of generous and round fruits, carried by elegant and restrained oak with a refreshing crispness to finish or a tropical sauvignon blanc with a palate of passionfruit and guava, finishing crisp, fresh and dry. While you’re savouring the flavours of the menu and wine, the talented kitchen team will be preparing the mouth-watering Melbourne Cup mains meals. Decide between a sticky glazed 'Cape Grim’ beef short rib with soft goats cheese, polenta and braised cavolo nero or crispy

skin barramundi with Israeli cous cous, blood orange, medjool dates, mint and Persian fetta. Suggested with our mains is the cabernet sauvignon; a soft, rich red berry fruit flavour with blackcurrant and layers of dark chocolate with a deep lingering finish. Finishing off this decadent four-course meal, indulge your sweet tooth with a white chocolate and champagne bavarios with fresh cherries and black forest crumb. Now that’s a winning menu. With sensational flavours on showcase and Highgate wines flowing all day, lucky door prizes, sweepstakes, and a prize for the best dressed male and female, Sirocco Noosa is the place to be this Melbourne Cup. Bookings are essential on 5455 6688. ●

Rani Wilkinson created the ella & sunday label after years of searching for beautiful clothes that can be worn every day. As a mum of four she was always looking for fashion that is affordable and stylish and, most of all, versatile outfits that can be worn to work, school drop-off, and out to dinner. “I like my wardrobe to work hard, without too much effort,” Rani said. At ella & Sunday, the focus is on classic styling with a contemporary feel to create a perfect fit for modern women of all shapes. It is inspired and motivated by Rani’s love of family and friendships with travel memories and experiences inspiring the colours, patterns and textures of the natural fibres she chooses. Beginning her career in the clothing industry in the early ’90s by studying fashion production in custom clothing, Rani worked in both haute couture and mass production companies in wholesale fashion and online sales. Her talent lies in made-to-measure patternmaking and sewing which truly are the building blocks of her collections. Linen, cotton, cotton/ linen and cotton/ silk are used extensively throughout Rani’s designs. Designed to flatter and fall comfortably on the female form, ella & sunday clothes are created with every woman in mind.

LOVE THE SKIN YOU'RE IN It’s baffling that we are still a nation of sun worshippers and are still needing those reminders to slip, slop and slap after all these years. New data shows skin cancer and sunburn are one of the top 10 reasons Australians visit their GP every year, prompting an urgent sun safety warning from the Cancer Council. The data shows consultations for skin cancer and sunburn were the ninth largest cause of GP consultations in Australia, with sunburn alone among the top 30 reasons for an appointment annually. Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift said the figures reinforced the need for Queenslanders to get more serious about sun safety. “Sunburn and the majority of skin cancers are preventable through taking care in the sun - it is vital for all Queenslanders to take sun safety more seriously. “Many Queenslanders still don’t realise their risk of skin damage and sunburn is still high when we head into cooler months - it’s imperative we don’t become complacent about being SunSmart. “Sunburn is a serious sign of skin damage, which increases the risk of skin cancer. Queenslanders should avoid sunburn at all costs. “Your lifetime tally of UV radiation

THREE … tips on choosing suncream There are a few things to keep in mind when choosing your sun protection:

1

While higher SPF sunscreens do offer more protection, there is little difference in the protection offered by SPFs higher than 50. Sunscreen also cannot fully protect you from potentially harmful UVA radiation, no matter how high the SPF is. You should still take other protective measures, like staying in the shade, minimizing your time in the sun, and wearing protective clothing.

2

Look for complete UV protection. The sun emits ultraviolet (UV) light in longwave (UVA) and shortwave (UVB) rays. Both can cause skin cancer, but not all sunscreens contain UVA protection. Check the front of the packaging for terms like “Broad Spectrum.”

3

Choose mineral sunscreen for sensitive skin, formulas for oily skin if you’re prone to breakouts and if you have dry skin, look for terms like “cream”, “lotion” or even “ointment” to get that moisturising effect.

exposure, together with the number of severe sunburns, increases your risk of skin cancer. “Once skin damage occurs, it is impossible to reverse, which means sun protection is key to a cancer free future.” Cancer Council further warned that the symptoms of sunburn can be so severe that medical attention should be sought. “Third degree sunburn requires medical attention. You should see your doctor if you experience blistering, headaches, nausea, vomiting, dizziness or severe pain.” The Cancer Council has warned of the increased risks of sunburn and skin damage over holiday periods, with more Queenslanders spending time outdoors on public holidays. “Queenslanders should make the most of the public holidays and enjoy the sunshine state - while staying SunSmart and protecting themselves from the sun,” Ms Clift said. “Follow all five recommended sun protective behaviours - Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek and Slide - when the UV Index is three or above - which it is all year round in Queensland. More than 3600 Queenslanders are diagnosed with melanoma each year, and it is estimated that over 350,000 nonmelanoma skin cancers are treated. ●

FRIDAY FORUM In the mid-1960s, a somewhat unusual frog from Mt Glorious near Brisbane was described. Because it was active during the day it was named Taudactylus diurnus. Subsequently the same frog was located on the Sunshine Coast. Another new species, found in Kondallila National Park in 1973 called Rheobatrachus silus proved to be a most unusual animal because its tadpoles developed not in water, but in the female’s stomach. Other populations of those were found on the Blackall Range and on Conondale Range. Sometime between 1976 and 1981, the two species 'went missing’ and have not been seen since. What happened to these frogs, even though they inhabited safe and sometimes inaccessible terrain, will be the subject of discussion by Queensland Museum’s Greg Czechura at Friday Environment Forum on 3 November. AROUND THE GROUNDS

SOFTBALL SEASON OFF TO GREAT START All dressed up for breast cancer research.

GOLFING LADIES IN THE PINK COOROY GOLF

Once again Cooroy Golf Club women held their annual Tee Off for breast cancer research. The day was sponsored by Noosa River and Canal Cruises who also provided the club with an evening cruise where all proceeds from the sale of tickets go to breast cancer research. The club is very fortunate to have among their members, a former member of the Australian National Women’s Cricket Team from 1968 to 1976 in Patsy Fayne (nee May). Patsy gave an extremely entertaining account of the joys and pitfalls of being a woman competing in a sport which was considered to be the domain of males. The Australian Cricket Association - of which she is a member - very generously donated $500 to the cause. Thanks to the generosity of women members, the small Cooroy Golf Club was able to raise $716 on the day with another $630 coming in from the cruise.

Results of the Novelty Stableford: Winner: Shay Zulpo (48 c/b), 1st Runner-up: Chris Michael (48), 2nd Runner-up: Aileen Morton (45 c/b); Rundown: Tina Thomas (45), Mary Miller (44), Juanita Langford (44), Eve Hunt (44), Helen Coogan (43), Deb Nelson (42), Sue Piggott (41), Patsy Fayne (41), Barb Taylor (41), Wendy Morse (41), Joyce McKay (40), Fay Wiggins (40), Jocelyn Rabjohns (39), Terri Cairns (39). NOOSA SOFTBALL Noosa’s junior softballers from Little Leaguers to Under 17s are settling in to the summer season after a week off last week due to the rain. The Little Leaguers - with boys and girls aged from 4-10 years - are continuing to develop their ball skills, with many of them new to the sport and quickly learning the skills to help them progress into higher grades. In the Under 13s there was strong batting by both Redsox and Slammers teams but Slammers’ fielders had the upper glove as they allowed only three Redsox players to get home, while scoring 14 runs themselves. Liam, Ethan, Tex and Lewis had strong hits

to the outfield. Ethan and Erin bagged good fly catches. In the Under 15s, Redsox lined up against Dodgers 2 in a close game where both teams were evenly matched. Alana struck four strong hits and Ethan scored a three-bagger. Nick was consistent with good pitching. In the second Under 15s match, Slammers and Dodgers 1 played a ‘friendly’ which saw some strong hitting, especially from Sami who scored a home run, and Ashton. The Under 17s had a strong match where fun was definitely the name of the game. Seniors also played on Saturday, with a social game and a men’s match in the afternoon. Softball is played every Saturday at

Softball action in Noosa. the Noosa District Softball Grounds in Tewantin and new and experienced players are still welcome to join the competition. Training is held in the afternoons Dodgers on Monday and Thursday, Redsox on Wednesday, and Slammers on Thursday. If you would like to join the club, please search for “Noosa softball” on Facebook where there is a link to sign-up, or email noosasoftball@gmail.com ●

NOOSA PIRATES WELL PREPARED FOR 2018 BY RON LANE In preparation for the 2018 Rugby League season, Noosa Pirates held their Annual General Meeting on Sunday morning. Before a crowd of thirty club members which included local member and club patron Glen Elmes and seven life members - club president Greg Christensen welcomed everyone. He extended his thanks for their attendance and contribution during the past season. “Last season it was our goal to turn this club around and set it on a successful path, I am sure that you will all agree that results show we achieved our goal in more ways than one. Not only did our players, under coach Ron Greentree achieve the impossible by winning the premiership, but also in the business side we showed a marked

improvement in all avenues of club life. “We started by upgrading club facilities, thus creating a welcome atmosphere to members, sponsors and visitors. Our work in the area of promotion, fundraising and hospitality was good and well supported by our work force. “The successful running of our annual rodeo, the first ever Legends of League and private functions within club premises, was not only a financial success, but also a success in as much that we provided a premises for family entertainment for the people of our community, many of who supported our club. In these areas the work of secretary Lexie Mawn and Greg Furner, both life members was exceptional.” The executive for the forthcoming

Ben Christensen, MP Glen Elmes, Jess Goldthorpe, Gary Christensen and Greg Christensen. season is: President Greg Christensen, Vice President Ben Christensen, Secretary Jess Goldthorpe and Treasurer Gary Christensen. Best wishes to all. ●

TENNIS STAR IN SHOWDOWN

Ladies give golf a go.

GIRLS LEARN BIRDIE SKILLS Cooroy Golf Club had the good fortune of receiving a small grant from the Sunshine Coast, Burnett and District Women’s Golf Association to put on a Get Golfing Girls program to encourage more women to play golf. The weather behaved itself beautifully while Women’s Captain, Shay, welcomed 22 women - who had either never played golf before or not played for a long time - to our friendly club. The club's resident coach Cyril took the women through the basics of golf, ably assisted by the girls in blue - members of the Women’s Golf Committee. The session came to a very pleasant ending with morning tea and animated chatter in the club house. Each of the participating women were presented with a cloth bag (cleverly produced by Carmel) containing information, golf ball and bits and pieces to help them in their new sport. It was generally agreed that a good time was had by all and they would return for the next three weeks to complete the program. ● 44 NOOSA TODAY

Christian Caldwell from Noosa Tennis Academy is off to Melbourne in December to attend the Under 12 Australian Championships held at Melbourne Park. The competition is part of the championships where the country’s best players assemble at Melbourne Park for the December Showdown. Over 16 days, more than 1500 matches are played to find out who is the best player across each age group. The Australian Open Play-off is the centrepiece of the December Showdown. The play-off sees players from around Australia battle it out for a golden ticket into the Australian Open. The Year 5 Sunshine Beach student gained direct entry into the Australian Championships after an impressive year, including titles at the recent Queensland Clay Court Junior Championships, Victorian Grass Court Championships, Tasmanian State Age, NSW Clay

Court Championships and many other tournaments around the country. Christian only recently turned 11 years old, but has already been selected to attend the National Academy training program in Brisbane, which is run by Tennis Australia’s Performance Unit, to train with the best 11 and 12-year-old boys in the state. He trains five days a week at the Noosa Tennis Academy which is part of the Noosa Tennis Club. Christian’s father, Nick Caldwell, coaches at the Noosa Tennis Academy where he keeps a watchful eye on his development. “Christian’s dedication and hard work is paying dividends and although he does miss out on some social activities, I can see that Christian is dedicated to the sport and that he is constantly striving to improve so he can continue his progress,” he said. Christian will also attend the Brisbane International in January as part of the Sunshine Beach State School team who are

SPORT TODAY

A SMASHING INNINGS BY CHRIS BY RANDALL WOODLEY The highlight of the weekend’s TewantinNoosa cricket matches was veteran Chris Wright’s magnificent 145 scored against the Caboolture team at Read Park. Chris returned full time this year to captain the Second Grade team which includes a number of teenage players. First Grade: The team played last year’s premiers Caboolture at their home ground in a 50 overs-a-side match. Caboolture, batting first scored 253 off their 50 overs. TNT bowlers were on top early and had the home side 3/70 but a fourth wicket partnership of 114 saw the Snakes build a very solid score. The best bowling figures for TNT were from Stephen Shaw 3/45, Jarrod Officer 3/51 and Rowdy Thomson 2/48. Although it was a long day for the team chasing leather the catching was classy with young Alex Bennett taking three outfield catches. Batting second, TNT lost wickets regularly and failed to build partnerships even though many of the batsmen got starts. This has been the trend for the team and they will need to mend this problem quickly if they are to be a force in the competition. The one pleasing feature of the team’s innings of 155 was captain Stephen Shaw’s return to form with a solid and patient innings of 64. Only other batsmen to lodge a score was Ben Gear (24). Next weekend the team will play Glasshouse Mountains at Read Park. Second Grade: The team were home at Read Park to the Caboolture Snakes and after winning the toss batted first. Losing their first wicket early, captain Chris Wright and teenager Darcy Morgan set about building an innings. What followed was a superb match defining partnership of 185 in 26 overs. Their score was aided by

Chris Wright hitting another four in his innings of 145 at Read Park last Saturday. poor bowling and sloppy fielding. Morgan departed for a well compiled 61 and Kent Officer scored some late runs (24 not out). Wright finished on 145 in the closing stages with 120 runs in boundaries highlighting the poor field placements and bowling. The Caboolture innings was restrained by a good opening spell from Keegan Bean, with Jye Baker 2/21, Mitch Brown 2/17 and Kym Sims 2/20 reaping the rewards to close the Caboolture innings for 175 in a good team effort and a great win over the Snakes. Onto another challenge next week facing Glasshouse away. Third Grade: The Thirds were away at Caloundra in a reduced 35 over match. TNT got off to a very positive start before Tony Watson (17) unfortunately played a

HOOK, LINE & SINKER

loose shot to have the team 1/27 after six. However, the team battled and ended up with 144. Top scorer was Mike Sobey (44) and Kieran Dunning enjoyed hitting the first six of his career. Unfortunately, TNT’s bowling was a bit wayward and only Harry Wilkinson (1/15 off 6) and Ayush Chamoli (0/27) really were consistent and able to tie up the batsmen. Dropped catches and poor fielding didn’t help when pressure was needed. Caloundra chased down the runs with six overs to spare but it was a top effort from an under-strength team. Next weekend the Thirds will be at home at Dale Officer Oval playing Coolum. Fourths - TNT’s match against Palmwoods was played at Dale Officer Oval but ended in a loss to the visiting team.

Graeme “Chappie” Chaplin bowling his spinners in last Saturday’s match. Palmwoods batted strongly and ended up with a huge total of 246, losing six wickets in the process. The TNT boys did their best to reach this target but fell short on 5/154. Outstanding innings were from the Australian “Veteran’s” batsman, Gary Madsen who scored 72 and teenager Max Cooper 42. Next Saturday the team will play Caloundra at Caloundra High School. ●

NOOSA WEATHER FORECAST JACK MANGROVE

THURSDAY Sunny

GREAT RESULTS, FAIR WEATHER With a great improvement in the weather, plenty of anglers were out in force last weekend, heading offshore things greatly improved last week with a couple of cracker days to head out. Plenty of anglers did the run out to the Hards, Barwon banks and the reef off Double Island with some outstanding results - venus tusk fish, maori cod, moses perch, pearl perch and good bags of snapper all hit the decks. Sunshine Reef has started to see the return of the pelagics with some nice sized spotted and school mackerel taken on live bait floaters and trolled high speed lures, schools of Mack tuna have also been in the area and have been targeted with high speed chrome slugs. For the bottom bouncers, there’s also been some nice sized snapper, sweetlip and coral trout in the area. Up on North Reef there has been some bigger cobia, pearl perch, and snapper, micro jigs around the 30-40g have been very effective with live baits also getting their fair share. Mangrove jack have been plentiful in the Noosa River, good numbers of jacks have noosatoday.com.au

Alexander Milne with a nice bream. come from the lower reaches of the river, the ski runs and between the lakes. Live baits have been the most productive. Paddle tail soft plastics in the 4-inch size have also been doing the trick. Families have been enjoying the river with plenty of quality whiting from the lower reaches. Gympie Terrace, the dog beach and the Frying Pan have all produced. Live worm baits, yabbies and pealed prawns have all been securing some good catches.

Good numbers of big eye trevally and giant trevally have come from Woods Bays and the back of the Noosa Sound area early morning and late afternoon. There has been the odd jew coming from the deeper stretches of the ski run on lures with the larger paddle vibes seeming to be the most productive. There have been good numbers of flathead on the outgoing tide from around the Frying Pan and in the Woods Bays. Prawn profile soft plastics have been doing most of the damage, for the bait angler small pilchards, whitebait and hardy heads have claimed some big fish. On the beaches - Noosa’s North Shore has been busy with plenty of anglers making the most of the offshore winds last weekend. Whiting, dart and bream have been in the closer gutters, with more predatory fish like tailor and trevally moving in on the bigger tides. The beaches north of Teewah have been the most productive with the odd jew and larger tailor reported. For the rock hoppers the Noosa National Park has been producing pan-sized snapper and sweetlip, and the odd tuna. ●

LIFE OF BRINE

PHIL JARRATT

From up on the cliff it doesn’t look that big, does it? Well, competitors in last weekend’s WSL Big Wave Tour Pe’ahi Challenge at Jaws on Maui might beg to differ. Jaws absolutely pumped for the event, with the women going drop for drop with the men. There were gutsy performances from Aussies Ryan Hipwood and Jamie Mitchell, and Felicity Palmateer in the women’s, but the titles went to Hawaii’s Ian Walsh and Paige Alms, seen here dropping down a bomb. Pictures: WSL

IN PRAISE OF

THE LAND OF THE LONG WHITE CLOUD If the weather was a bit better and the water a bit warmer, you’d have to give serious consideration to spending more time in New Zealand, even though they don’t speak very good English. What a green and pleasant land it is, and what a sensible outlook the Kiwis have on life. Even their politicians seem quite reasonable, as evidenced last week by their election of the reformist Jacinda Ardern as their third woman PM. Ms Ardern is going to have to tax the bejesus out of the country to implement her reform agenda, but leaving that aside for the moment, as well as the fascist teenager who just took over Austria, at just 37 Ardern joins the ranks of a new generation of world leaders, like Canada’s Justin Trudeau and France’s Emmanuel Macron, who are charismatic, youthful and exciting. The Australian media has been so preoccupied with trying to work out just how many of our own pollies are actually New Zealanders themselves, that they seem to have given Ardern short shrift, but the rest of the world is paying attention, and I think it’s part of a general trend towards increased recognition of the two little islands at the bottom of the world. I’ve been going there quite a bit over the past few years, for work and play, and I’ve come to realise that there’s a lot more happening in NZ than just sheep shagging a hoary old joke that the Kiwis keep fuelling by telling it against themselves (or at least I think they’re joking!).

So here’s just a few snippets of what I liked about this trip: 1. Their appreciation of culture. All kinds of culture, even that which revolves around a crusty old surf dog from Noosa talking about his latest book. In our second trip to the Tauranga Arts Festival, my first favourable impressions were improved upon. At music, theatrical and literary events, audiences were warm and enthusiastic, and well-informed. 2. Maori architecture and design. Although we didn’t get to Rotarua this trip, we saw plenty of examples of the whare whakairo or Maori meeting houses - old and new in country towns. I love how such simple structures can be made so beautiful. 3. Their sense of humour. One Kiwi journo introduced me to the New Zealand public in a weekend feature article in this way: “The voice has a broad Aussie twang and is surprisingly calm, given that he’s in a hotel room in Bali and a massive volcano is threatening to blow its lid just up the road. His body, I imagine, is tanned, leathery, as wrinkly and tough as a rhino’s scrotum, and lightly crusted with salt.” Rhino’s scrotum indeed, and how did he know so much about them? 4. Mount Maunganui. We spent a few days at a mate’s beachfront “bach”, and although there wasn’t much surf about, we loved walking the long beach, and even tackled the Mount itself in a vain attempt to dust off the pinot gris cobwebs. 5. Their pinot gris. Tassie pinot gris is pretty good, but the Kiwi variety tops it easily for

that wonderful combination of earthiness and fruit, particularly the Marlborough ones. I liked The Ned, but they’re all good. 6. Their restaurants. Auckland is full of good ones, whether you’re after a bowl of mussels on the pier or a full-on dining experience. We didn’t really know what to expect when we stumbled down a flight of stairs in the old brothel district of Fort Lane and discovered Cassia, a beautifullyappointed basement where a vast wait-staff looked after a full house of happy punters as the smells of modern Indian cuisine drifted from the open kitchen. We squeezed onto stools at the bar until we lucked into a small table just being vacated. What followed was the best, most succulent and most innovative Indian food I can remember eating. Anywhere.

The author and mate Jamo after dusting off the pinot gris with a Mount climb.

HOME FOR A NANO-SECOND But that’s enough about them. What about us? Well we managed to spend enough time in Noosa to put a load of washing on and pack the bags for the next trip. Oh, and present Men of Wood and Foam at The J last Saturday night as part of the Noosa International Film Festival. The screening was one of those rare treats in which the Band of Frequencies plays parts of the original soundtrack live on stage. We’ve only done a handful of these, and I’m always a little worried that the band will miss the critical cue, but being consummate professionals, of course they never do. And the energy they give to performing

Band of Frequencies rock The J. their songs that track our surfing history is always incredibly exciting. If you were there, I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. ● 12352455-LB20-17

BETWEEN THE FLAGS

RON LANE

LIFESAVERS KEEP THINGS UP-TO-DATE It was another great weekend for our local beaches. Over at Sunshine Beach club spokesman reported a busy weekend for the training team. Proficiencies were conducted and the bronze squads continued their basic training. The proficiency is the test that all qualified lifesavers under go at the start of the season; this ensures that all patrol persons are up to date in all aspects of patrol work, including physical fitness. Also good to see club captain Scott Summers continuing his progress back to good health - careful of that beachfront restaurant food! At Noosa, big crowds and safe conditions ensured our beach goers of a good weekend of sun and surf. New SRC members - now on patrol rosters - continued their basic training with board work and patrol regulations. Next weekend will be a big one for our town and our clubbies. Once again our lifesavers will assist the running of the Noosa Triathlon. Sunshine will be providing IRB crews and water safety board paddlers as well as manning a water station for runners. Now that the swim is in Laguna Bay area (Noosa's Main Beach), the role of the duty lifesavers becomes more important than ever. With the swim being over a good

distance, strict surveillance is required, in particular for those not experienced in open water swimming. Wednesday morning we will have the Kids Tri on Main Beach; Noosa will provide two IRBs plus rescue boards and Friday evening the traditional 1000 metre eyeliner swim will again be held on Main Beach. This will also be covered by lifesaver water patrol volunteers from the various clubs. Remember the old saying, "you can't

keep a good man down.” Well this definitely applies to a young Noosa clubbie named Robert Lemon. Despite his youth - only 18 years old - and his short time in lifesaving (he joined in May 2017) he is already starting to make his mark. Last June he was flown to Canberra where he received the Life Saving Award of Excellence for his rescue of another youth in the waters off National Park. Last Saturday this young man sat for the

Rescue Water Craft Certificate and happy to relate he passed with flying colours. This is the test for the Jet Rescue Ski patrol and as the driver who mans this, is a one man patrol. The test which includes helicopter coordination, is very tough and not all pass. News of his success was well received by veteran members for it is this type that is considered to be not only the backbone of lifesaving but also our future. Apart from his attitude to all aspects of surf club life, his conduct in private life is a credit to his family. Last year our support body, the Surf Club, had the honour and privilege of playing host to a return serviceman’s organisation known as Mates for Mates. This is an organisation that caters for returned personnel who, as a result of their service, have received severe wounds. On their visit to the Surf Club they were accompanied by a team of British servicemen in the same situation; they were visiting our men to promote their cause as well as endeavoring to kick backsides on the golf course. Happy to relate Soldiering On - an Aussie team - accompanied by a similar British group known as Battle Back, will this year visit the Surf Club thus giving us a chance to again show some good old Noosa hospitality and say thank you for your service. Both teams will consist of ten men and they too will be meeting on the local golf course to contest the Clyde Pearce Cup. We wish them welcome. ●
