Life in hoon hell By Cam Lucadou-Wells The evidence is irrefutable. Inspector Alison Crombie, who oversees the region’s traffic police, sees the swirls of heavy tyre marks in the turnbowl at Prospect Hill Drive, Narre Warren. She is meeting with exasperated residents who have been plagued by hoons for the past 10 years. They describe the close-calls such as when a lout’s car crashed through a neighbour’s backyard fence. Then there are the drug deals, the loud smoky burnouts, the romps in cars and the incinerated stolen vehicles and piles of shredded tyres. Residents tell Insp Crombie they were “dispirited” after years of reporting the lawlessness to police. “It happens day and night,” a resident tells her. “We’re over it. It’s got worse.” Almost on cue, a green sports ute squeals its tyres as it drives around a corner 50 metres away from Insp Crombie. She has a chat to the driver of a Holden sports vehicle who hasn’t moved from the dead-end for the past 30 minutes since she arrived. What residents want is to close off part of the road with bollards to stop hoons parking at the turnbowl or tearing up the adjoining park. Insp Crombie agrees - a combination of posts and concrete bollards across the road and nature strips would be a “relatively inexpensive” solution. Police are meeting with VicRoads and Casey Council to work out possible changes to the road. Insp Crombie said she’d contribute her observations. Six nights before the meeting, nearby households were choked with burnt-rubber smoke from a series of burnouts. Meanwhile, two boys have been outed by a dog-walking resident while tagging graffiti under the footbridge at the road’s park. At first they rush away from Insp Crombie and the adults, crossing the footbridge to the other side of Monash Freeway. Then they summon the courage to inch their way back, detouring for a swing at the spanking new playground. “The old one got burnt to the ground two

While the group’s attention wavers, the boys then scurry home like “little mice” as a witness put it. One of the boys walks back outside. “Stop graffitying!” Insp Crombie says. “We know who you are.” The boy replies: “I don’t know anything about it.” Then there’s a curious encounter with a man who parks his heavy vehicle. He asks if the group has seen his stray poodle. He reckons the drivers convene on an En-

Maree Davenport with Liberal leader Matthew Guy and Kez's Kitchen managing director Michael Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS Carp. 174273 “In 1997 I became the first sitting member to have a baby while serving.” Ms Davenport was not re-elected in 2002. She established a consultancy for not-for-profits and industry peak bodies, took up lobbying
and took places on boards and committees. “I am proud to be a part of the rich fabric of the seat of Mulgrave,” she said. “I saved to buy my first home in Dandenong North at 22 and have lived locally since.”
Dandenong mourns pillar of the church By Casey Neill Dandenong priest Father Anthony Guelen has died. He served at St Mary’s Dandenong from 1986 until his retirement as Pastor Emeritus in 2010. The Foster Street church hosted Fr Guelen’s funeral on Wednesday 1 November. He died the previous Wednesday at age 89 at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne. Fr Guelen arrived from Holland in 1955 and was ordained a Catholic priest at St Patrick’s Cathedral, East Melbourne, in July 1958. He served as assistant priest in the Dandenong, Carlton and St Albans parishes and in 1972 was appointed Parish Priest of Holy Eucharist, St Albans South until moving to St Mary’s. Fr Guelen was in the 59th year of his priesthood when he died. In 2009, celebrating 50 years of service to
the Catholic Church, Fr Guelen said he had witnessed Dandenong change from a country town to a sprawling city. Former Greater Dandenong Councillor John Kelly was an altar boy for Fr Guelen and said the priest was “just a good bloke”. “He was my friend but I know he had many other friends,” he said. “There was an age difference but we got on extremely well. “He was a big supporter of young people being involved in club sports and at the same time was very engaged with the senior citizens of the parish, making sure the church supplied accommodation for some of those who were in need of support.” Mr Kelly said close to 50 priests attended the funeral and the church was “chock a block full of people he’d come across”. “Obviously he’d left his mark,” he said. He said Fr Guelen was buried in Dandenong Cemetery.

A sexual predator who preyed on 11 boys at football clubs and a church in the South-East has been jailed for a minimum of seven years. Darran Scott, 53, groomed boys as young as 11 while he was a junior football coach and Mormon church member, Judge John Smallwood said during sentencing at Latrobe Valley County Court on 27 October. “I can only describe you ... as a sexual predator who, basically, got away with it for 25 years.” Scott - also known as Darran Page - pleaded guilty to 15 sexual offences as well as perverting the course of justice and four firearms offences but showed little remorse, the judge said. The indecent acts happened during camping and surfing trips as well as during visits and overnight stays at Scott’s home over a period of nearly 25 years since 1990, the court heard. He plied his victims with alcohol, marijuana, sleeping pills and pornography. “Don’t tell anyone. It’ll ruin me,” Scott allegedly told one of the victims. It “put the lie” to Scott’s claims that he did not know he was doing anything wrong, the judge said. Scott denied some of the allegations when he was interviewed by police in 2005, the judge noted. The accused didn’t seek treatment at that stage but later sexually abused five further victims. Scott’s letter written to one of his victims shortly before sentencing was “self-pitying”, Judge Smallwood said. “You’ve ruined lives,” the judge said. “The circumstances of all this offending over such a long period of time and the damage you did to so many lives can only be viewed as disgusting, in my view.” Victims typically lost their childhood and their confidence. They felt anger, shame, became anti-social, their education disrupted and they found intimate relationships difficult, the court heard. “They wondered why you did it to them and questioned their own sexuality,” Judge Smallwood said. “They form a fear that others will disbelieve them and the feeling that it’s their fault.”

Dandenong-born Maree Davenport will try to oust Premier Daniel Andrews from his seat at next year’s State Election, the Liberal Party has revealed. The 49-year-old former MP formally announced her candidacy with a trip to Noble Park manufacturer Kez’s Kitchen, the elevated rail site and Noble Park RSL on Tuesday 24 October. “I’m stepping back in to the fray because I am really concerned about the decline in our community fabric, its infrastructure and prospects in the future,” she said. The mother of three pointed to the recent CFA reforms, health figures, crime, cost of living pressures including gas and electricity, and traffic congestion as key concerns. She said Mr Andrews held Mulgrave by 4.48 per cent. “To regain government, we need to win seven seats,” she said. “I am determined to make Mulgrave one of them, despatching Daniel Andrews for good.” Ms Davenport was born at Dandenong Hospital, attended St Joseph’s Primary and Killester Catholic Girls School in Springvale, and worked at a local bakery, jeans store and Myer Dandenong during her school years. Ms Davenport joined the Liberal Party in her late teens. She worked as a real estate agent across Springvale, Noble Park and Dandenong. In 1992, at age 24, she ran in what was then the seat of Dandenong North and lost by 36 votes despite achieving an 8.1 per cent swing. She was elected to the Legislative Council, the state upper house, for Waverley Province in 1996. “I’m proud of the fact that aged 28, I was the youngest woman ever elected,” she said.

Paedophilia was once one of society’s greatest taboos. Dark things grew in dark corners, and it took society decades to drag this disgusting behaviour into the daylight, and expose it for what it was. So it seems incredible that, in 2017, there still walk among us men - and it is almost invariably men - who commit these atrocities, often for decades. To read the story of one such creature in this week’s paper is to be overwhelmed by a sense of sorrow and revulsion. We have to fight them, and we have to win. And because our enemy is so despicable, and so endlessly cunning, we have to be ready for their every move. So parents, watch anyone in a position of trust like a hawk. We’ve largely cleansed the ranks of the education system, and now we need to do the same to our churches and our sporting clubs. Be endlessly alert to the profound danger of these wretches who look and sound like men, but in reality are something completely different. School your children such that if they ever feel they’ve been touched inappropriately or have that instinctive, uncomfortable feeling, then things aren’t right - and they need to tell you straight away. And if they bring these claims to you, make absolutely sure you do not rest until the authorities take action. We once used to say that the price of peace was eternal vigilance. It seems the price of innocence may now be eternal suspicion. But if our sharp eyes and our stern hearts can keep others honest, then we’ve taken another step towards ridding society of this evil. Murder case
Reigning Supreme By Garry Howe Leading 1973 Melbourne Cup winner Gala Supreme up the race and into the Flemington mounting yard in front of 103,000 people was an experience that stays with Ian Hutchins to this day. He still gets emotional when talking about what he describes as an experience of a lifetime. “I am one of the 100 or so people to have led a Melbourne Cup winner,” he said. “Coming up the race that day was like running out on to the MCG on Grand Final day.” Ian acted as strapper that day for his father Ray Hutchins, Gala Supreme’s trainer. His mother Rita grew up in Dandenong. Ian’s son Darren Hutchins is a founding partner of O’Brien Real Estate and is based in the Keysborough office, which he owns. Darren was a toddler at the time and was in the family home at 14 Woods Avenue in Mordialloc, right next door to Ray and Rita at number 12, as the events unfolded. He has grown up with stories of that first Tuesday in November that changed the lives of not only the Hutchins family, but that of veteran jockey Frank Reys, whose victory speech is still considered one of the best delivered in the history of Australia’s most famous race. One of Darren’s most treasured possessions is a photo of him when still “knee-high to a grasshopper” being dwarfed by Gala Supreme’s ample frame. Darren grew up around racehorses and spent the first 13 years of his working life as a stipendiary steward and clerk of scales. Now living in Berwick, he branched into real estate 14 years ago and, having worked for Noel Jones for seven years, then co-founded O’Brien Real Estate with Dean O’Brien. He is still a corporate director of the franchise.

Ian Hutchins leads 1973 Melbourne Cup winner Gala Supreme - one of the greatest experiences of his life. Darren and Ian reminisced about the win this week in a phone hook-up with The Journal. They said Gala Supreme’s preparation followed the tried and true formula, with a bit of a twist at the end. He started in the Liston Stakes, then won the Herbert Power Handicap, was second in the Heatherly Handicap then ran a close second to Swell Time in the Caulfield Cup.
Ray then caused a bit of a sensation when he decided not to give the horse another run between the Caulfield and Melbourne cups. Common belief back then was that a horse needed to top the preparation off on Derby Day - the Saturday prior - with an run in either the Dalgety or Mackinnon Stakes. Legendary trainer Bart Cummings was quoted as saying that Gala Supreme couldn’t win but was among the first to congratulate Ray after the race. What the punters didn’t know was that Ray had given Gala Supreme a searching trackwork gallop on the Saturday, using three stablemates to tag team him to keep the pressure on over a mile and a half (2400m), which he figured was as good as a run anyway. Frank Reys pleaded with Ray - his good mate - to give him the extra run but the trainer held firm. He was proven correct, with Gala Supreme surging home to pip the hot favourite, Kiwi visitor Glengowan, and Daneson to take the race. At 41, Reys was the oldest jockey in the field and had almost given up any hope of ever riding a Melbourne Cup winner. The previous year he was to have ridden Piping Lane and had to watch from home, after being badly injured from a race fall, as John Letts booted him home. He had almost considered agreeing to wife Noelene’s pleas to give the game away, but decided to have one last crack. His victory speech has gone down in Cup folklore. “I kept picking myself up off the ground and hoping I would win a Melbourne Cup. It’s something every jockey dreams about,” he told the huge crowd. “I still can’t believe it. I don’t know what to believe. It’s the greatest thing that has ever happened to me… I’ll never forget this.” Nor will the Hutchins family.
A Western Australian man will answer murder charges over a Springvale woman’s stabbing death in 1987. Ranny Yun’s sister and cousin found the Cambodian-born 27-year-old dead in the front room of her Windsor Avenue home just over 30 years ago, in the afternoon of Thursday 15 October. Thornlie man Meth Mean faced an extradition hearing in Perth Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 2 November over the death. He told the court through a Cambodian interpreter that he did not oppose the extradition request. Homicide Squad Cold Case detectives, with help from Western Australia Police, arrested the 49-year-old in Perth earlier that day. A cold case review led investigators to identify Mean as a person of interest. In June 1988, police offered a $50,000 reward for information about Ms Yun’s death.
Dad ‘broken’ From front page “Things have got out of hand,” Mr Vandersteen said. “They can’t contain it at home. The Prince Mark Hotel is out of the question. “If I was to bail him to come back tomorrow, the chances of him reoffending are incredibly high. “I have to make sure when you’re released, there’s no family violence.” The man pleaded to Mr Vandersteen that police had struck his head against a wall and had threatened to tell inmates that his dad was a “cop” so they would bash the man. Mr Vandersteen told him: “I’m not getting dragged into this.” The man was remanded for a bail and family violence intervention order application at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court the next day.

LOOKING BACK
Compiled by Dandenong and District Historical Society
8 November 1917 Dandenong Brass Band One Sunday afternoon there was a large attendance at the Dandenong Park, when the local brass band rendered a first-rate program of music under the baton of Mr Douglas. The selections were greatly appreciated, and the collection made by members of the fire brigade realised 10 pound 15 and sixpence for the Hospital Sunday fund. The brass band will render a programme at Berwick on Sunday next in aid of the hospital fund. Offers from car owners will be thankfully received to convey the bandsmen to Berwick: so far, two such offers have been made.
Transformation of Greaves Reserve to develop Dandenong’s new showgrounds has been little short of a miracle. It was almost bewildering on Friday morning to drive along service roads past car parks, horse and cattle ramps, new toilets along a new fence to see the creek bank cleaned up and cattle tie-rails erected between two monstrous exhibition halls almost in shape for Saturday’s show. Facilities at the new showgrounds will be found just as spacious as the old one was cramped - they’ll almost need a pack of sheepdogs to round up the lost children. Show patrons will find a good deal of natural shade but there may be some grizzles about the distance between car parks and show attractions.

Greater Dandenong Council will fast track the planning process for the $150 million redevelopment of the General Motors Holden site. The mayor, Councillor Greg Harris, said the new industrial estate was very important to the city’s economy and the council would do everything it could to support it. The land was bought earlier this year by Malaysian Company Phileo Australia. A partial subdivision of the 62ha site is underway. The estate will include GMH’s national spare parts warehouse. The rest of the site will be developed in stages over the next three years. Cr Harris said Greater Dandenong was one of Australia’s major manufacturing centres. “This development will act as a catalyst in bringing other companies and developments to the city,” he said.
5 years ago 5 November 2012 Create a crate idea and win Talk about making a silk purse out of a sow’s ear. Or in this case, a violin a harpsichord guitar or a designer table crafted out of rejected timber. Owner of the Lyndhurst recycling depot Waste Converters has long noticed some of the good quality timbers used in pallets and crates particularly for the US and Europe. That thought grew into an international wood workers prize “Create from a Crate“ offering a $7000 prize pool. It’s one of the most generous woodworking awards in Australia. Woodworkers and furniture designers have 12 months to assemble a masterpiece out of four pallets. Much of the 600,000 tonnes of annual timber waste in Victoria is not utilised and is dumped in landfill.
Country comes to town COMMUNITY
VOICE MELISSA FERRIS DANDENONG SHOW CATTLE CHAIRWOMAN
competition finishing and the showgirl competition starting, meaning that some years we competed in our farm clothes. An early memory I have of attending the Dandenong Show was leading my jersey cow Denision Park E48, who won Champion Dairy Cow. I was invited onto the Dandenong Show Youth Committee as an 18-year-old and then nominated onto the general committee to as-
sist in planning the show. As part of the Youth Committee we organised and held a stockman’s challenge on the main arena. I then became an active member of the cattle section sub-committee and I now hold the position of chairwoman. I continue to be involved in the Dandenong Show because I have the opportunity to give back to the community and assist others to have an experience at the Dandenong Show like I did when I was younger. I also find that the members of the show society are very welcoming and encouraging of young people and they want the show to continue running. The only way this will happen is through the young people on the committee. Over the years the Dandenong Show has changed.
The overall size of the show has become smaller and entries have decreased, but the essence of an agricultural show is still present. The cattle, horses, sheep, animal nursery, show bags, rides, scones, fruit cake competition and fresh produce competition are all on display for the community to view. The community of Dandenong and surrounding suburbs is very diverse and I would encourage those who haven’t attended the Dandenong Show before or who don’t know what to expect to come along for a look. The Dandenong Show is family-friendly, with opportunities for the kids to see and pat farm animals, go on a few rides and maybe be lucky enough to go home with a show bag. It would be great for the community to see what the Dandenong Show has to offer when the country’s coming to town.

I was born into a dairying family, which bred and showed stud jersey cows. My family has also been showing cattle at the Dandenong Show for more than 100 years. Each year my family would take a truck load of cattle to the Dandenong Show to compete, so I have been attending the Dandenong Show since before I was born. The show soon became something my siblings and I looked forward to attending every year. My parents loved the fact that their four children eagerly did the majority of the preparation and they were just the taxi drivers. We were able to enjoy our day showing, winning some prize money in the handler’s class to later spend on show bags. We entered the showgirl competition each year, sometimes not being able to get ‘dressed up’ as there was no time between our cattle

Sleepwear queen By Casey Neill Margaret Gunton removes a sheer, sky-blue night gown set from a change room that’s packed with stock she can’t fit on the shelves. She explains that Lavender Lace Lingerie’s previous owner, Glad McDonald, passed it on with the shop and told her never to sell it. “It’s over 80 years old,” Margaret says. The Berwick resident is the sleepwear’s third custodian. Ms McNamara was the first. She had a store in Lonsdale Street for about 20 years and sold to employee Glad. Margaret bought the business from her in 1987. She’d worked as a fitter years earlier and was unhappy with her job at an electrical store. Glad offered her a job, but had put the business up for sale by the time Margaret made her mind up. “She said ’why don’t you buy it?’” Margaret said. So she did. That was 30 years ago on Tuesday 17 October. She leased a store at 171 Thomas Street, but that was acquired through the ongoing Revitalising Central Dandenong project. “My daughter’s got the shop Big In Black down the road,” Margaret said. “I needed to be near her because she’d give me the fuller figure girls.” So she snapped up a space for sale in the Vanity Court Arcade, also on Thomas Street. “It’s much, much smaller than I had before. I had a huge shop over there,” she said. “My line of business has changed because I don’t have the walking past trade anymore.” But she’s established Lavender Lace as a specialty fitter for “the fuller figure” and for women touched by breast cancer. “Some people when they come in here, they’re a little bit nervous,” she said.
Margaret Gunton has run Lavender Lace Lingerie for 30 years. 174559 “I want them to be happy and feel completely normal again. “It’s as rewarding for me as it is for them.” It’s a service she’s offered since taking on the shop, but the demand has grown from two a month to five or six a week through hospital referrals. Margaret also has reduced store hours so she can travel to nursing homes. “Some of the dear old ladies can’t get out anymore,” she said. “I do home visits for prosthesis, too.” She goes the extra mile to track down stock for customers and it keeps them coming back - all the way from China and Western Australia. “When they’ve gone away they do without until they come back,” she said. Margaret will offer a 20 per cent discount to any customer who mentions this story.
Margaret Gunton is the third custodian of this nightgown. 174559
Endeavour Hills Leisure Centre has been named a finalist in health promotion’s night of nights, the VicHealth Awards. The centre was recognised for its Inclusive Gymnastics Program, which aims to provide accessible gymnastics lessons to those with disabilities. Centre manager Susie Nogic said it was a “tremendous honour” to be named a finalist. “I’m thrilled that Endeavour Hills Leisure Centre has been recognised as a leader in health promotion in this prestigious category of the VicHealth Awards,” said Ms Nogic. “Endeavour Hills Leisure Centre is committed to improving the health of Victorians and our Inclusive Gymnastics Program is an example of our work to ensure nobody is denied access to the sport of gymnastics. “The VicHealth Awards highlight the critical role of health promotion in keeping Victorians happy and well and we look forward to celebrating our achievements with the other outstanding finalists in December.” VicHealth CEO Jerril Rechter said the quality and scope of this year’s nominations were outstanding. “This year’s finalists are to be commended for tackling some of Victoria’s biggest health issues and making a huge difference to the lives of so many Victorians,” Ms Rechter said. “We received a record number of nominations across 10 categories this year, from small community gardening projects supporting disadvantaged families to state-wide campaigns confronting challenging health issues like mental illness, cancer and drug abuse. ” Winners will be announced on Tuesday 5 December 2017 at the VicHealth Awards Ceremony at Melbourne Museum. Top leadership award More than 170 people watched four Venturer Leaders earn the highest leadership award in Springvale. Leanne Morgan, Lorelle Smart, Becky Nelson and Margot James recently finished voluntary advanced training. Scouting, community and family members gathered to celebrate the achievement at 2nd Springvale Scout Group on Friday 27 October. They each received a gilwell scarf and the wood badge in the form of wooden beads. They are a replica of a wooden warrior necklace and the honour dates back to 1888 when Scouting founder Robert Baden Powell was on a military campaign in Zululand, South Africa.
The Springvale Scouts provided a cake and a spit roast and took the opportunity to 'scarf up’ honorary members in the community, include councillors from Greater Dandenong Council. The four Scouts honoured shared more than 45 years of Scouting service. Ms Morgan is from Willara Venturers, based at 2nd Springvale Scout Group. She has been in Scouting since she was eight years old, when girls were first allowed to join, and has spent the past 32 years with 2nd Springvale, including 22 as a leader. Ms Smart is from the Kalora Park Venturers, Ms Nelson the Gabbarra Venturers, and Ms James Wundarra.

OPINION Explosive revelation
Dandenong High School
I believe a claim in the recent Then and Now article on Noble Park needs further explanation. Folk law is often assumed as fact until challenged. In George Fenton Roulston’s book he asks why was Nobel Park changed to Noble Park? GFR was the first editor of the Dandenong Journal. His explanation is quoted from his writing. “When Mr Frank Buckley opened up the big paddock he had hoardings with the name Nobel Park erected as the Nobel Explosives Co, gave many exhibitions of blowing up trees with their explosives. “Personally, I think Nobel Park the better of the two names, but those who had the power to alter the nomenclature thought different.” Another historic point, Mr Buckley’s generosity on donating land has recently been questioned as purchase receipts have surfaced for the various (donated) properties. GA Wachter, Noble Park.
Accelerated & Enhanced Learning Program Years 8 and 9 2018
Recent history Not until 1935 did all the Australian states and territories use the name Australia Day to mark that date. Not until 1994 did they begin to celebrate Australia Day consistently as a public holiday on that date. By all means change it. N. Wyndom, Noble Park.
Vote pre-empts debate The majority of Greater Dandenong councillors voting to pre-emptively and suddenly support keeping 26 January as the date of Australia Day feels like an attempt to quickly silence any respectful local debate about the issues. The choice of dates is important to everyone and I know people feel very strongly about keeping the current date, but many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people find it hard to get in a celebratory mood on the anniversary of the day where their land was stolen, their cultures degraded, and their people pushed from their ancestral lands. As a resident of Springvale I understand how important it is for everyone to celebrate being Australian together, regardless of where their families have come from, but I would like to respectfully suggest that council - and Australia more widely - considers whether another date would be more appropriate so that we can all celebrate together and consult with Greater Dandenong residents as part of that process. Duncan Cumming, Springvale.

Your editorial about Australia Day said so many things I agree with: that Australia is a great nation of warmth and new beginnings, that we embrace people from everywhere around the world, and that our town, Dandenong, is the epitome of these things. I also heartily agree that Australia Day is the day to celebrate this and that Dandenong throws some of the best Australia Day parties around. However, let’s be fair dinkum about this, cobber. Those who protest Australia Day are not against any of these things. We merely object to the date being the same day as Invasion Day. Move the date. I suggest May 8, maaaate! Basketballer Frazer Dawber will represent Australia on the court in Italy this month. The 21-year-old, who works at disability enterprise Gateway Industries in Dandenong, will play for the Boomerangs at the INAS World Basketball Championships. “It’s the world basketball championship for men with intellectual disability,” he said. Frazer was “happy” to be selected for the International Federation for Intellectual Impairment Sport (INAS) event. The 198cm tall centre first picked up a basketball at Hawthorn special school Rossbourne School. “It was a new sport there so I just got into it and fell in love with it,” he said. “When I started I was just playing with the local competition at Rossbourne and then as I went on I just got better and got introduced to more groups. “I tried to go professionally but that didn’t work out. “Nowadays I just play with friends.” The Boomerangs, Australia’s basketball team for men with an intellectual disability,
last played in Loano, Italy, in 2011. The side finished fourth after losing the bronze medal playoff to Portugal 46 to 79. Frazer played for the side at the 2015 INAS Global Games in Guayaquil, Ecuador, where the side also just missed out on the podium. “Hopefully we’ll be able to win the bronze medal. That’s what I’m hoping for,” he said. “The teams that played in that should be coming back in this world champs, plus some new teams.” He’ll fly to Europe on Sunday 19 November and the tournament will run from Monday 20 to Sunday 26 November. “I was happy and excited to go away,” he said. “I’ve been to America a couple of times but I’ve never been to Europe.” There are 10 players, three emergency players and four staff members in the Boomerangs squad. “We have camps, come together and work on the team things that we need to,” Frazer said. “Then our coach gives us programs to help us work on our basketball skills and our physical skills to get better.” 12370105-KC45-17

Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams, her colleague Georgia McCormick, Stefanie Lorenzin from Maurice Blackburn and Sally McCracken from Angel Light Link.
The fourth annual Dandenong Unites event collected donations for a Hallam support service for women, Angel Light Link. The Maurice Blackburn Women’s Network hosted the event on Wednesday 25 October and asked guests to bring along gift cards and stationary items. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams was the guest speaker. The event focused on engaging local women in professional fields, aiming to promote respectful relationships between genders, families, workplaces and the broader community.
Show yarn renews old ties Hallam man Douglas Black called the Journal Star after reading about Graeme Kershaw’s time with the Dandenong Show in the 30 October edition. Graeme was his first boss out of school down at Korumburra, he explained. He bumped into him in Dandenong in the 1960s but hadn’t seen him since. Graeme said he remembered Douglas and gladly received his details with the intention of reconnecting.

Mr McNabb commented that Ms Peulich “knows how to recruit muppets” and Cr Dark replied that he was “still the same sore loser you were years ago”. Mr McNabb disagreed, and said he wasn’t “a blind follower who’s told what to do like some”. That prompted a final bite from Cr Dark. “Tell me, how does it feel to be at an age where your whole political career is non-existent and you’re just a miserable old man?...” Cr Dark has since deleted his Facebook comments.

Dandenong West Primary students are putting their art on display at the Dandenong Show. Every student in the school went on an excursion to an art experience last term as well as being part of a school-based art exhibition. “They now understand what an honour it is to have their work displayed publicly and there is a sense of pride among the students, their families and the staff at Dandenong West,” visual arts teacher Caroline Jones said. The students started their projects for the Dandy Show exhibition last term. “At that stage, they were not aware what it meant to finish their work to a standard for public viewing,” she said. “After their experiences, they now know the importance of finishing their work, and taking extra effort in presentation.” Ms Jones said the students were encouraged to take risks with their work, put in their best effort and have fun.

STAR JOURNAL 11
THE LOWDOWN Q&A
with Club Noble President Barry Bradshaw
What is something people don’t know about you? That I ‘escaped’ from Western Australia around 45 years ago, just before my past was to catch up with me. How long have you worked at Club Noble and how did you get involved? I first got involved in the 1970s and served a total of 17 years as a committeeman/director, the last nine years as president.
THREE … places to get close to nature
1
Coomoora Woodland Flora and Fauna Reserve in Serpentine Road, Keysborough, is home to the threatened swift parrot, hyacinth and prawn green orchid. The threatened grey-headed flying fox and endangered growling grass frog have also been spotted at the site. It’s ideal for bushwalking and bird-watching.
2
Fotheringham Reserve in Alexander Avenue, Dandenong, covers about 16 hectares and is adjacent to Yarraman Creek. It has one of the largest intact remnant river red gum woodlands in Greater Dandenong, and this provides habitat for many native plants and animals.
3
Alex Wilkie Nature Reserve in Mackay Street, Springvale South, hosts ranger-guided bush walks along a nature trail during spring and summer. The 2.56 hectare heathland is one of the last remaining examples in Greater Dandenong of the vegetation that once covered the whole sand belt area in and around Springvale South.
What was your most memorable moment? Being made a life member of Club Noble in 2015 ... or perhaps I should have said our wedding or birth of our kids? How do you respond when debates about pokies crop up? Honestly, I try to ignore the hype and get frustrated with the general inaccuracies made by others. I try to get across the message that community clubs with gaming are really great contributors to their local communities. What would your last meal be? A big medium-rare steak with a glass or two of a good shiraz, followed by a bread and butter pudding with lots of cream just like my mum once made. Where’s your favourite place in Greater Dandenong? I really don’t have one favourite place. Maybe the Macca’s drive-through coffee at Parkmore. Can I say that? What event, past, present or future, would you like to witness? The Fremantle Dockers winning the AFL premiership. I am allowed to dream, aren’t I?
What’s the best thing about Noble Park? Really? That’s easy. Our local community has so many caring people dedicated to improving conditions for local residents. I think that’s fantastic.
Howard and Bob Hawke, who in my time I believe to have been the best PMs for their parties. And finally, Sir Les Patterson (Barry Humphries) to add some decorum, dignity and reverence at the dinner table.
What six guests, dead or alive, would you invite to a dinner party? First, I would invite Bruce Ruxton. Then add Pauline Hanson and African-American comedian Richard Pryor. I would also invite John
What has been your most embarrassing moment? Running out of petrol at peak hour, on a bend, on CityLink near St Kevin’s. It was also a very frightening experience as well.

ON THE COVER
CAPTIVATING MID-CENTURY CHARM A pristine example of mid-century architecture, this impressively renovated single level residence displays a compelling blend of original elegance and contemporary style through superbly spacious and well zoned family dimensions. A stylish column entry is the instant eye-catcher and beyond the solid brick façade there are revealed original timber floors and a generously proportioned L-shaped sitting and dining space which is drenched in natural light. The well-appointed modern kitchen with all the essentials opens up to the private attractively planted garden area where the new owners will be able to cook their barbecue and serve directly to their guests inside. Versatile accommodation comprises four bedrooms, the main with a walk-in wardrobe and well-appointed tiled ensuite. The remaining bedrooms share a central family bathroom with separate toilet. What seals the deal is the second zoned living area at the other end of the home which creates the perfect space for kids to enjoy watching movies, playing games or converting into a quiet study space. It is desirably situated in a tranquil park-side pocket of booming Keysborough, across the road from Bilbungra Kindergarten, near various other elite primary and secondary schooling, local shops and parks. Other features include laundry with external access, oversized double garage with secure gating, ducted heating throughout, downlights and much more. The selling agent said buyers simply cannot argue that this is the perfect proposition for small and growing families, investors, downsizers and first home buyers. ●

PRICE PROVES STRONG AUCTION MARKET THIS property is located at 37 Herbert Street, Dandenong, and proves that the property market in the Dandenong CBD area is still very strong. There were 14 bids on Saturday sale for this old clinker brick on 740 square metres which opened with a vendors bid at $650,000 and was sold under the hammer at $800,000. Price expectations were around $1000 per metre square but there was competitive bidding which took it past that figure. The selling agent said that the sale price confirmed the ongoing strength of the auction system and the confidence of buyers in Dandenong. A large crowd was there which shows the interest in property such as this and there are buyers who missed out and are on the search for another property. Some were looking to develop into town houses but the eventual purchaser is planning to renovate and move in as it is so close to the Market, Plaza and railway station. It is a large investment but one that will see a fantastic home in a central location. McLennan Real Estate is prominent in the central area and has a huge database of ready buyers in this area. NEWS CARMEN POWELL is a life member of the Dandenong and District Historical Society. She grew up in Dandenong with three sisters. In the 1950s late spring was marked by the glitz and glamour of the Belle of Belles Ball.
Belles ring out for the ball There was a period of time in the late 1940s and early 1950s when each spring the Belle of the Ball competitions were held. Various balls were held around the broader districts such as the Hallam Younger Set Ball, the Hampton Park and Lyndhurst Rural Fire Brigade Ball, the RSL Ball, the Hospital Ball, the Stockman’s Ball and many others. The final Belle of Belles Ball was held in the Dandenong Town Hall in November each year. It was a grand affair. Winners would be featured in the local newspapers. The hall was hung with streamers and balloons and a single row of chairs was set out around its perimeter. A wide central staircase leading up to the stage would be built for the occasion. The stage itself was transformed by archways, columns, or Palladian niches and decorated with flowers and potted plants. Anyone was eligible to enter but only about 15 girls would be selected from the entire hall of beauties. These would be escorted onto the stage by two little flower girls from where those chosen, with their partners, would be displayed for all to see and one by one each entrant would be questioned by a panel of judges. The belles would be led back down into the main hall by the tiny flower girls to be introduced to the mayor, mayoress and the judges brought in from Melbourne. The couples would then compete in ballroom dancing. One girl would be chosen as the belle of the ball. In November 1948 my sister Pam was seven and other sister Joyce was six when they were chosen to lead the Belles, with their part-

Carmen's sisters, Pam and Joyce, were the young attendants that year. ners, down the steps off the stage and into the main hall and present them to the judges. They both wore pretty long dresses, carried baskets of flowers and each wore a garland of flowers in their long curled hair. Mrs Len Godfrey was, no doubt, responsible for their selection. Merle Godfrey was one of Gwen’s closest friends and her father, Len Godfrey, was on the committee that organised the balls to raise money for the Dandenong and District Hospital. Over the years that committee organised many elaborate and beautiful stage settings. In the professional photograph taken that night it shows the stage decorated in the centre with an enormous silver bell through which the belles emerged. The bell is flanked on either
side with tall potted plants. On page 12 The Journal newspaper recorded ‘Little Joyce and Pam Cruickshank, in lovely pink frocks, and carrying fragrant baskets of roses, made dainty little flower girls, whom compere Maurie Callard of 3DB described as “future belle of belles”.’ Despite the inclement weather Miss Vera Hartin was acclaimed as Belle of Belles in front of a crowd of 500. The following year Pam and Joyce were again chosen and new long dresses were made. Gwen began studying at McCabes Academy of Dressmaking at the beginning of 1948 so no doubt she made their dresses for both years. The Journal recorded ‘On stage, with a lush background of greenery, was ‘Belles Cottage’ with two lovely little flower girls in pink, Pam
William Matthews Funerals
and Joyce Cruickshank waiting at the gate to open it for each couple. The latticework of the front fence was entwined with roses and the name ‘Belles Cottage’ appeared on the gate. When the first of the escorts arrived, he approached the front door, rang the bell, and waited expectantly. The door opened, and the first of the belles emerged to join her partner.’ In 1949, 16-year-old Gwen began going out with Charlie Masters, a boy she had met at the Saturday night town hall dances. That year Charlie partnered Gwen in the Belle of the Belles competition. One Sunday - with Mum’s approval, of course, - Gwen had invited him to tea. This was the first of what became a special occasion. Gwen now slept in the sleep-out off the back porch and the walkthrough bedroom had been transformed back into the walk-through lounge/dining room. The best cloth was opened out over the best table and the best cutlery was removed from its box and placed alongside the best dinner set. A roast was cooked with crispy potatoes, pumpkin, carrot, parsnips and greens and all topped with tasty gravy from the pan juices. For desert something like a lemon meringue pie with home-made ice-cream and cream was served, followed by iced cakes or cream butterflies. Joyce, who is nine years younger than Gwen, asked if she could have another cake and when told “no you’ve had enough!” replied “well, what about Charlie, he’s had five, you count his papers”. A red-faced Charlie Masters sat to attention. A red-faced Gwen chastised her.

William Jackson In order for young people to succeed in an increasingly complex environment, children need a high quality education; to be taught skills to achieve success, and to think critically, enabling them to become good decision-makers, responsible global citizens and lifelong learners. Maranatha is a safe Christian learning community in partnership with home and church that helps children find true success in life. Through a model of Christcentred education within a safe environment, we seek to inspire children to think Christianly about the world, and so use their God given gifts and talents for the benefit of others. With talented, well regarded and highly qualified Christian teachers who understand children, Maranatha students have the opportunity to learn, develop, serve, grow and excel by participating in a rigorous, challenging and engaging curriculum at either of our two well-resourced Junior Schools at Officer and Doveton or our highly regarded Middle and Senior School at Endeavour Hills. Life is a journey, but with a great foundation in the partnership that is Maranatha, children can become the fine young men and women God intended them to be.

BUSINESS SOUTH EAST
Robot is reactive A Dandenong South business is bringing an intelligent virtual assistant robot to Australia. Sanbot Australia is launching the Sanbot Elf service robot from China’s Qihan Technology at Scienceworks on Sunday 12 November. CEO Chris Scott said more than 60 sensors kept the 90 centimetre tall ’bot aware of its surroundings. “It’s a very engaging and plucky little robot,” he said. He’s let one freely roam his home, asking it to make video calls, check on appointments and play his favourite music. It has animated arms, multi-wheeled feet and a HD touchscreen with long-lashed blink-
ing eyes. Elf can turn to face the person addressing it and be directed to sing, order pizza, change TV channels and adjust lighting, and finds its charging station when it needs to. Mr Scott said the cloud-enabled device could read a person’s gestures and poses and navigate any objects in its way. He said on-board cameras could allow businesses to manage hundreds of Sanbot robots from anywhere in the world. “The ability of Sanbot to translate questions in over 28 languages and to communicate via a touchscreen, speakers and colourful LEDs
makes it very interactive for use in a public situation,” Mr Scott said. “Sanbot is already in service overseas offering flight information to stressed travellers at airports, patrolling warehouses as security guards, providing a telepresence for doctors in patient’s homes, acting as teaching assistants, waiters in hospitality, and acting as fun friends and learning resources for kindergarteners.” Mr Scott has always loved to tinker with toys. He installed early robots back in the 1980s, studied a graduate diploma in robotics, and set up his business almost 30 years ago.
The Sanbot Elf can read human expressions.
Automotive apprentices go to work on donated car Dandenong TAFE students will put their new skills to the test on a donated car. Excited automotive apprentices at Chisholm Institute recently took delivery of a black Holden Commodore SSV, which ACM Parts donated for student training. Last year’s apprentices repaired and restored an ACM Parts-donated Toyota Corolla to full working condition. ACM Parts CEO Mike Kirkman said he was looking forward to the next chapter of the education alliance. “Our first project with Chisholm was a huge hit with the apprentices,” he said. “Students were encouraged to take charge of their own education and it was fantastic to see them get excited about putting the outstanding automotive training they receive at
Cosy in ward Dandenong Hospital’s maternity ward has welcomed a new arrival with a $25,000 price tag. Hitachi Construction Machinery Australia presented a Cosy Cabinet to clinical midwife consultant Willie Dolan on Friday 27 October. The company made the donation with help from the Humpty Dumpty Foundation and received a thank-you plaque from the charity at the event. The Cosy Cabinet is important for first base emergency access for babies who need resuscitation in the postnatal ward. The equipment it will replace is functional but bulky and dated. The cabinet is important for maintaining a baby’s vital signs and stabilising their condition until they can be transferred to the neonatal unit. Humpty Dumpty Foundation founder and executive chairman Paul Francis said Hitachi’s support for families in Dandenong and surrounds “means children have access to medical equipment that is very much needed by the medical staff and, most of all, it is life-saving”.
Chisholm into action and take their learning to the next level. “Investing in these students is the way forward and we are excited to continue working with and supporting Chisholm to create a bright future for the automotive industry.” Chisholm automotive technology senior educator Damien Bitzios said a direction for the car project had not been confirmed. “The learning possibilities for this project are endless,” he said. “Drift, drag, race car or something else entirely - we have a number of options on the table; we can’t wait to get started and see where this project will take us.” Chisholm TAFE apprentices posing with the car, along with ACM Parts Victoria Sales manager Chris Mallon and Chisholm TAFE Senior Educator for Automotive Technology.
Business bus The Small Business Bus will roll into Dandenong in November. Small business operators will be able to access advice from mentoring specialists skilled in marketing, finance, human resources and sales. The experts have extensive experience in operating small businesses and in senior business management roles. The bus will park in Palm Plaza, near the corner of Walker and McCrae streets, from 10am to 4pm on Wednesday 22 November and in Harmony Square on Lonsdale Street from 10am to 4pm on Thursday 23 November. Small Business Minister Philip Dalidakis said the small business community was the backbone of economies across the state. “The Small Business Bus is a fantastic program that brings expert services right to your doorstep,” he said. It’s Bonar, reconstructed “I’ll add versatility whether it’s down back or forward and stints in the middle, too,” he said. “I’m fully fit and ready to go for the preseason.” As the 2017 AFL Draft - which will be held at the Sydney Showgrounds on 24 November - creeps closer as each day passes, Bonar will keep things simple and he hopes to enter his first day at an AFL club in pristine condition. “At the moment, as soon as exams finish I’ll just be with my very closest mates. “I want to be with my family as well and I also have personal training and just get prepared for the pre-season,” he said. And Bonar is certainly excited to see how the Stingrays go at the draft table in 2017, with as many as seven or eight players likely to be snapped in either the AFL draft or AFL Rookie Draft. “The Stingrays are full of talent with Luke (Davies-Uniacke) and Hunter (Clark), but also with other boys like Tom De Koning and the others who went to the State Combine like Tom Murphy and Riley D’Arcy,” he said. “It’s been a really good year for the Stingrays boys,” he said.
By Nick Creely If the draft was purely based on resilience and determination, Dandenong Stingray utility Aiden Bonar would almost be the first player picked by an AFL club. Despite hardly playing any football over the past couple of years, the 190cm power athlete has risen up dramatically into a likely first round draft selection and has finished 2017 with barnstorming results at TAC level and in the Draft Combine. After two consecutive knee reconstructions that have left him consigned to the rehab rooms, Bonar finally got back on the field to play six games for the Stingrays and a historic premiership with Haileybury College. “I was stoked to not just win the premiership (with Haileybury), but just to be back playing with my mates, and just getting out on the field and playing football has made me really happy,” he said. “In my last game and the Combine results, it’s given me a lot of confidence heading into the draft on the 24th - I’m just really happy.” Despite only looking forward to what is set to be an exhilarating month in his life, he concedes there was times where he doubted he would be coming back. “The first knee I did (meant) I didn’t know what was going to happen, to be honest, and my parents didn’t either - but the second one I had my manager, and I thought it’d be a bit more of a smooth process,” he said. “It was the AFL dream (that drove me to come back), I’ve always wanted to, and my family as well - mum would come to all my rehab session and my PT sessions - when I got my licence she still came.” While Bonar is busy digging his heels into his VCE exams, he’s also been sitting in front of
Aiden Bonar has fought his way back from two knee reconstructions to firm as a first-round draft pick. 156050 a range of AFL clubs, all considering drafting the enigmatic talent. “It’s been a really good experience talking to a few different clubs, and I think being yourself during the interviews is important - meeting different people has been great but they don’t give you much,” he said. “You don’t know probably until the night (where you’ll go), but at the end of the day it doesn’t matter as long as you’re drafted.”

Panthers taught a lesson By Nick Creely VICTORIAN PREMIER CRICKET REVIEW - ROUND 5 Dandenong’s sizzling opening month to the 2017/18 season has been disrupted, with the Panthers inflicted with their first loss of the season against Melbourne Uni on Saturday. Uni skipper James McNeil sent the Panthers in to bat, and it took just until the second over for star bat Brett Forsyth (0) to fall caught and bowled to Mark Stafford (1/35) - a massive wicket considering his rollicking start to the season. Skipper Tom Donnell (7) and promoted batsman Comrey Edgeworth (45) steadied on a tough track, before Donnell was caught behind off in form quick Wes Agar (1/24) to leave the visitors 2/18 - an almost unseen scenario facing the Panthers in the opening four games of the season. Edgeworth combined for strong partnerships with Ed Newman (19) and LJ Edwards (24), but quick wickets in the middle stages of innings had the Panthers 7/121, and when Edgeworth was bowled on the brink of a maiden first XI half century, the momentum shifted back to the Uni. But it caps of a stunning first five rounds for the classy top order batsman, who will be hard to remove from Dandenong’s side. Edgeworth has made 87, 38, 110, 110 in the seconds before earning his chance in the top side. Unrecognised batsmen Akshat Buch (28 not out) and Peter Cassidy (19) then ensured the Panthers could reach a competitive 8/178 off their 50 overs with some late hitting. Uni openers James Bett (53) and Andrew Young (19) got off to a swift 49 run start on their home deck, before Peter Cassidy picked up the vital breakthrough of Young. But the Panthers struggled to contain Bett, who made an elegant half century, and when he was finally removed by left arm spinner
Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS
In-form Panther LJ Edwards made 24 in the tight loss to Melbourne Uni. 163545 Buch (2/47), the damage was already done with the score reaching 3/101. Despite a commendable fightback in the middle, with the Panthers reeling Uni back to 6/157 in the 38th over, the home side comfortably passed them seven wickets down. Jak Jowett (2/36), James Nanopoulos (1/27) and Peter Cassidy (1/26) also chimed in with wickets.
The Panthers have also been bolstered by the signing of County star Steven Mullaney for the rest of the season, who will return to the club after a stint five years ago. Dandenong’s seconds were also inflicted with a heavy loss, with the Panthers losing by seven wickets at Shepley Oval. The Panthers were rolled for just 92 in 41.5 overs, before Uni easily passed them in just 21
overs. Down in the lower grades, the thirds won comfortably by three wickets and the fourths lost in a tight one wicket affair at Wilson Oval. In the final round of one-dayers in Round 6, Dandenong will play the struggling Kingston Hawthorn on Saturday as they look to bounce back from an unfamiliar loss.
Maroons make a mockery of poor form By Nick Creely DDCA TURF 1 REVIEW - ROUND 3 (DAY 1) Mind boggling bowling displays by Mitchel Minhas and Gayantha Wijethilaka saw NORTH DANDENONG steal the show in an extraordinary day of cricket by the Maroons at Lois Twohig Reserve. After a tough start to the season, with some lackluster results, the Maroons inflicted ST MARY’S to an embarrassing first innings loss. After being sent in on a “soft wicket”, the Maroons - off the back of a terrific 35 to Shehan Fernando - scratched their way to 126 off 52.3 overs, with Saints’ skipper Kaushyla Gajasinghe (4/31) and Keppler Fernandez (4/34) starring. Syed Mehmood (29) and youngster Caleb Millman (23) also did well on a tricky pitch. It turned out to be a more than competitive total in the end, with Minhas (6/19) and Wijethilaka (4/20) feasting on the Saints’ batting line up like hungry Tigers.
In just over an hour they single handedly bowled out St Mary’s for just 39 in a display that could get their season back on track after heavy losses to Mordialloc and Springvale South in the opening two rounds. St Mary’s are currently 0/18 in their second dig. SPRINGVALE SOUTH is in prime position for a massive win over CRANBOURNE, with the Bloods dominating the opening day. Sent in to bat, Bloods openers Nathan King (54) and Michael Vandort (33) got the home side off to an 82-run opening, setting up the day perfectly for the middle order aggressors. After being 1/95 at tea, and losing two early wickets almost immediately after the break, the Bloods were merciless, ploughing almost 200 runs to declare at 5/277 of 70 overs. Dylan Quirk (77 not out) and Jack Sketcher (77) combined for an entertaining 130-run partnership to completely dominate. Gun spinner Jarryd Straker (2/0) struck two late wickets - including a wicket off the last ball to leave Cranbourne 2/40 at stumps. Matt Chasemore, meanwhile, struck his first
century as a BERWICK player, with the Bears completely flattening DANDENONG WEST at Greaves Reserve. Coming in after two early wickets that left the Bears at 2/11, ‘Cheeks’ struck eight sixes and six fours to anchor the innings brilliantly, and brought up his century with a trademark boundary over cow corner. The faultless century lifted the Bears to 236 off 50 overs, with skipper Jarrod Goodes chiming in with a brutal 31 off 21 balls. Brad Sheehan (5/45) was brilliant with the ball for the Bulls, in what was the youngsters first game of Turf 1 cricket. The Bears currently have the Bulls hanging on by a thread, with a brilliant hat-trick by Goodes (4/5) leaving the home side at 6/48 at stumps. In the other games, HSD (136) could be in for a surprise loss to NARRE WARREN (5/90) and DINGLEY (150) looks set for a loss against HALLAM KALORA PARK (0/45). BUCKLEY RIDGES and MORDIALLOC was washed out at Park Oval.

Having a ball on the table By Nick Creely Noble Park table-tennis champion Heming Hu is one of the highest ranked players in Australia. The 23-year-old Rio Olympian has been steadily building on the progress made at the 2016 games and is in brilliant touch as he looks to qualify for the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in 2018. “Coming back from the Olympics last year and a season in Germany until February this year, my results have been quite good,” he said. “I am currently ranked number two in Australia with a very narrow gap between the number one rank. “I have won all the Victorian Open tournaments that I have played this year, including being the Victorian Open Men’s Singles event. “I won the Australian Top10 Men’s Singles event, beating fellow number one Australian player Chris Yan in the final. “I went on later after this event to win the Mixed Doubles National title with partner Melissa Tapper and come second at the National Championships to Chris Yan in the Men’s Singles Final. “It was tough for me mentally to lose the final of the Nationals so closely but overall it has been a fantastic year for me.” While Hu is yet to qualify for the Australian team for the Commonwealth Games, he is confident he is doing everything it takes to make his dream a reality. “I would really like to qualify for (Commonwealth Games) and do well in it. “We have our Commonwealth Games Trials in mid-January and this is the next thing that I am preparing for. “I will be playing as many tournaments as I can in the meantime and heading over to Europe for one month from November to December to prepare for these trials.”
Noble Park table-tennis champion Heming Hu's exciting career has continued. 156287 Since getting his first taste of life as an Australian Olympian, Hu has felt no need for a rest, instead he has worked on his craft to become an even more rounded player. “After the Olympics last year I went straight to Germany to play professionally for almost a full season and really loved it,” he said. “Since then I competed at the World Championships in Germany and World University
Games in Taiwan. “I would say I have been heavily working on the shots and sets of plays that occur in table tennis matches. “There are always things that I need to improve a lot in but if I had to say one skill or shot that I am focusing most on it would have to be my service.”
Picture: ROB CAREW Hu has also been giving back to the community by providing his coaching services. “I really enjoy bringing other people into the sport and getting them to enjoy it,” he said. “I am currently coaching a fair bit of table tennis and am looking to further expand on it in the near future after the Commonwealth Games.”

MOTORING
Discovery loses its steel When the first Land Rover Discovery was launched in 1989 it was a cross between the tough, almost military, Defender and the upper-luxury Range Rover. Over the next 27 years and four generations it has matured into a more refined vehicle, but retained plenty of off-road capability. Now the fifth generation Land Rover Discovery is here and we’ve just spent an interesting week running in what will be typical conditions to most owners - suburban and city running as a family station wagon. Shopping, sitting in traffic and suchlike boring stuff. There was one exception, our Discovery set a lap record for a luxury 4WD around the temporary racetrack a couple of days before the Gold Coast 600 Supercars race. I won’t disclose our lap time in case it turns into a competition to beat it. But our dog Bailey sitting in the navigator’s seat was pretty impressed with the handling and comfort. (Hint, the time was very long due to hopeless traffic and suspicious police people.) Older Discoverys were heavy beasts, thankfully that problem has been solved and a reduction of 480 kg in vehicle weight achieved to the outgoing Discovery 4. The use of aluminium in 85 per cent of the body is the major reason. New Land Rover Discovery is sold in four levels - S, SE, HSE and HSE Luxury and with the choice of five or seven seats. Our test car was the HSE. The rounded front is too soft for our taste and we feel it may upset Land Rover traditionalists. Then again, this market segment is becoming stylish as almost all buyers are looking for a
Softer styling of the fifth generation LandRover Discovery may not appeal to those who are keen on rugged 4WDs. fancy station wagon not a 4WD or SUV. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so I will wait and see what people say down the track, or should that be down the suburban streets? The interior we do like, it’s neat and straightforward in its design, and in true LR style is very usable. The high quality materials received nothing but positive comments. Three turbo-diesel engines are offered with Discovery in Australia: two four-cylinder Ingenium units and a V6. Our Disco had a TdV6 with 190 kW and 600 Nm. The entry-level Td4 produces 132 kW and 430 Nm; the higher tuned Sd4 has 177 kW and 500 Nm. A V6 Si6 petrol engine is sold in other markets but there are no plans for it to be imported. All engines sits in front an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission and in Australia are sold only with multi-mode 4WD. The 2WD option in other countries isn’t offered here. New Discovery has the latest Jaguar Land
Rover’s InControl Touch Pro infotainment system. The touchscreen is positioned high on the centre console and is easy to use through the series of menus. The clean uncluttered appearance was commented on all who rode in the Discovery with us. Satellite navigation can share directions to a paired smartphone to help you complete your journey on foot after leaving the vehicle. Discovery has 3G WiFi for up to eight devices and there are up to six 12-Volt sockets. S and SE models have an 8-inch touchscreen, HSE and HSE Luxury get a 10-inch screen. The latest in crash avoidance and, if worst comes to the worst, minimisation of injuries to all occupants, is installed in these very safe Brits. All rear seats (five or seven) get IsoFix child-seat mounting points. Getting in and out of the Land Rover Discovery isn’t as easy as in many so-called SUVs that are really only tall station wagons. Discovery is the real deal so the high(ish) seat position is necessary if you’re planning real offroad work. Seven adults can be carried in reasonable comfort. Cramped footroom for taller secondrow occupants when the front seats all the way back possibly requires compromises. The two third row seats are wide, with enough leg and headroom even for tall adults. Access into third-row seats is tricky. With all seats in place there’s a minute 258 litres of luggage space. Lowering the third row seats increases it to 1231 litres. There’s 2406 litres with the second row seats also folded. Hidden cubby stowage in the central console can hold four iPads or a pair of two-litre drinks bottles. A central armrest cubby large enough to house five iPads with a lid that hinges through 180 degrees to function as an
armrest even when open Hidden small-item stowage behind the fold-down Climate Control panel is also appreciated. Discovery’s smooth, comfortable ride makes it an excellent long-distance cruiser. Something that was appreciated when we drove the new Discovery in the Northern Territory a few weeks back as part of the Aust media launch. Around town it’s easy to drive and park despite its apparent bulk. The turning circle is nice and tight for this class and outward visibility is good.
