Aqua Movers swim club members have been marooned by a lack of car parking. 174775 information on traffic signs and phone apps was part of the Bunjil Place project. The sensors will help manage parking demand, ensure fair access to short-stay parking with the ability to add future car parks into the system, he said. Installation of the sensors in 904 parkingbays began on 6 November. But swimmer Dianne was sceptical on whether the technology would help the crush especially ahead of Christmas. “It’s just there to make them feel better. “The whole thing is there’s not enough parking and that’s all there is to it. “You can drive around as much as you like but there’s no spaces. That’s the whole problem.” Other swim club members suggested the council should “shuttle” in their staff from a

City of Casey”. “As part of Casey’s journey towards becoming a smart city, we’re installing this new sensor technology to help make finding a car park quicker and easier,” Cr Aziz said. “This technology will assist our residents and visitors coming to Bunjil Place by alleviating the need to drive around in circles looking for a parking space.” Lloyd Klaman, the YMCA-appointed centre manager of Casey ARC, said he was in “communication” with Casey Council about the parking issues. “(We) are monitoring to ensure everyone has somewhere to park. “We support the initiative that the council has just released.” The sensors' installation is expected to be finished this month.

remote car parking site, or build a multi-level car park on the former council offices. “Make the people (using the facilities) the priority.” Mr Tyler said 100 extra parking spaces had been planned at the soon-to-be-demolished civic offices. However, no decision had been made on the future use of the former civic offices and library, he said. Traffic signs displaying available parking will be installed on Patrick Northeast Drive and at the entrance of the Bunjil Place basement car park. The old civic centre’s car park would also be equipped with sensors after the civic centre was demolished, the council announced. Casey mayor Sam Aziz said the parking initiative was an “exciting step forward for the

Casey Council is installing parking sensor technology as it tries to overcome car parking complaints at its flagship arts-civic precinct Bunjil Place. Since the precinct’s opening on 29 October, Dianne - a member of Aqua Motions swim club at the adjoining Casey ARC - told Star News that extra council staff at Bunjil Place had moved into the old car parks. More than 350 spaces in the eastern car park are taken by permit and all day parking spaces - most of which were filled by council staff well before 9am, she said. “There’s no room for us.” Other members - some in their seventies say they are parking up to 200 metres away at neighbouring businesses in Fountain Gate. Some cancelled their swims out of frustration. Casey Council has moved an extra 431 staff to Bunjil Place - on top of the staff that had been based at the former civic centre next door. It built 470 extra parking spaces - including 160 extra parking spaces at Casey ARC and 85 in Bunjil’s basement. It also retained a 225-space gravel car park at Max Pawsey Reserve, which was built for construction contractors at Bunjil. Casey chief executive Mike Tyler said it was too early to assess the impact on Bunjil and Casey ARC’s patronage. He noted not all of the 431 extra council staff worked at the same time. “Car parking at any new facility will take some time to settle as customers/community members become familiar with the availability of spaces and understand patterns of use. “For example there is public car parking in the basement at Bunjil Place that the community is not yet familiar with.” After feedback from ARC’s managers, Casey will rezone 22 two-hour car spaces next to the former civic centre to a three-hour limit, he said. Mr Tyler said the Smart Parking sensor technology - which would provide real-time

Bollards aren’t helping By Cam Lucadou-Wells Bollards have been installed at hoon-plagued parkland in Narre Warren - but residents say the barriers are in the wrong place. After a residents' petition, Casey Council has added bollard and rail fencing to stop hoons tearing up the park and mini-sports field at the end of Prospect Hill Road, Narre Warren. David Richardson, the council’s city presentation manager, said the council brought forward works to renew the reserve’s fencing due to “recent issues highlighted in the area”. “The bollard and rail fencing installed is a commonly used fencing standard for reserves, to assist in reducing the risk of vehicles accessing and damaging the reserves, while allowing the area to still be open for the community to use.” Mr Richardson said there was no need to consult with residents because the council had already been planning to replace the reserve’s old fencing. “Consultation is not undertaken for works of this nature, as the bollards are put in place to place to protect council assets and parks/ reserves.” He did not comment on whether the council would follow-up on the residents’ desire to close off the adjoining turnbowl, not just the park. Resident Michael Presta says he and his neighbours’ request to close off part of Prospect Hill Road would require fewer bollards and less cost. It would also be a more effective deterrent against 10 years of regular hooning, he says. The council’s park fences will do nothing to stop the loud, smoky burnouts, drug deals, romps in cars, incinerated stolen vehicles and shredded tyres in the turnbowl, he says. “It’s not what we want.

Michael Presta and Rod Macdonald inspect hoon vehicle damage caused to the park's footbridge. 174020 “Listen to the people, listen to the residents. None of us have had consultation from the council. “But we will happily meet them to discuss at any time and look forward to hopefully get-

ting the opportunity.” Mr Presta said neighbours had not observed any extra police patrols since recently meeting with Victoria Police at the site.

“We feel like nothing has changed, except (the hoons) can’t get in the park.” Inspector Alison Crombie, who oversees the region’s traffic policing, said the site was listed as a “task” for patrols “as often as we can”.

Watchdog clears Melbourne Water over wetlands works By Cam Lucadou-Wells The State Ombudsman’s office has refused to intervene on residents’ complaints about the draining of Troups Creek West wetlands in Narre Warren. Resident Ray Darbritz had called on the Ombudsman to investigate the lack of public consultation prior to Melbourne Water undertaking the works. He says the project had transformed the bird-attracting lake into a wetlands “swamp”. Melbourne Water describes the project as “resetting” the water level to improve the filtration of stormwater into Port Phillip. Mr Darbritz says the first he’d heard of the project was a letter-drop in June to notify him of the project’s imminent start. “It is worth noting that there were a significant number of local residents who signed a petition opposing these works as soon as they became aware of them,” he said.

“And that none, not one, had been consulted prior. “Therefore no specific form of consultation process was done at all.” Melbourne Water only met with residents after the petition - and after the works had been contracted, Mr Darbritz said. The Ombudsman investigator said in a letter to Mr Darbritz that the wetlands consultation consisted of customer surveys, submissions, a panel and university study for a 2015 Melbourne Water waterways plan. The level of public consultation “though targeted on more than the wetlands and basin” was “in line” with Melbourne Water’s community policy, he stated. There was no “administrative error” in Melbourne Water’s decision to go ahead with the works or its consultation, he stated. “I appreciate that you may be disappointed by my assessment, however I do not consider

further action by us will produce a different result.” Melbourne Water stated its consultation found the community wanted the upgrade of 50 per cent of its underperforming wetlands, including Troups Creek West. It also states that prior to the works, it delivered project bulletins, door knocked residents, installed project signage, created a webpage and a 1800 number for the project. Its project manager Jason Brown said the size and shape of the wetland had not changed. “The Troups Creek West wetland has been prioritised for upgrade works to reduce nitrogen levels entering our waterways further downstream. It’s critical the wetland performs this core function. “We appreciate the community values this site and we believe it will continue to provide benefits for local residents after the works are completed.”

… BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE The editor’s desk

GO TO STARCOMMUNITY.COM.AU FOR…

This is a week where racing takes centre stage. Most of the focus is on Flemington for the huge Melbourne Cup Carnival, spearheaded by that race that stops a nation. People who take scant interest in racing throughout the year are happy to play a part in one of the four big race days this week - the Derby, Cup, Oaks and Stakes race days. It now also showcases what the racing industry brings to the South-East region, which has become an epicentre of the racing industry. Cranbourne and Pakenham have been part of the carnival action. Cranbourne hosted a meeting on Melbourne Cup Day for the first time in its 150-year history and Pakenham continues to build on its big Pakenham Gazette Oaks Day meeting. Both racing centres provide enormous benefit to the region. Racing Minister Martin Pakula said on Tuesday that the government was proud to support the new Cup Day race meeting at Cranbourne “because it attracts visitors, boosts the local economy and supports jobs”. Cranbourne has the largest training complex in the Southern Hemisphere, creating hundreds of long-term jobs for the region, and has bold plans for a 100seat convention centre and accompanying hotel complex in the pipeline. Pakenham built Victoria’s newest racecourse a couple of years back and is on a similar path, with some of racing’s biggest names looking to establish satellite stables there. Racing is an industry that draws its critics, but this region would be poorer without the benefits it brings in many areas. Garry Howe

Ablett wants mayor’s job By Cam Lucadou-Wells and Brendan Rees Casey councillor Geoff Ablett has put his hand up for his third term as mayor, with a plan to revegetate some of Casey’s lost remnant ecology. Cr Ablett was expecting to nominate for the election at a council meeting at Bunjil Place on 13 November. He thought two other councillors may rival him for the job. “I’m not sure where it all sits at the moment but I’ll be putting my hand up. “If it’s me, good. But if it’s someone else I’ll be the first person to shake their hand and say

well done. “I’ll support them 100 per cent.” If successful, Cr Ablett would pursue many of the big-ticket items of the council, such as the Smart City push, more local jobs and engagement with China. His other pet issues will include mental health, homelessness and restoring some of the large-scale loss of natural environment in Casey. Just two per cent of Casey’s environment remained from 40 years ago, he said. There was a need to balance the urgent need for more jobs with maintaining the environment, he said.

Cr Ablett also would lobby for the State Government to pursue a Western Distributorstyle partnership with a private consortium to fast-track road upgrades in the South-East. A double-rail line between Dandenong and Clyde’s growth corridor was also high on Cr Ablett’s agenda. Meanwhile incumbent mayor Cr Sam Aziz backed Cr Ablett as a “man of tremendous integrity” to take over the helm. “He is the most active councillor in terms of putting forward ideas and initiatives. “He would be a fantastic person to continue the stability and teamwork we’ve established in Casey.”

Geoff Ablett, left, with Turning Point pastor Phil Cayzer, wants an urgent and massive upgrade of Casey’s roads. 171604 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS

Stacks to explore in new library facility By Cam Lucadou-Wells If it was a book, Bunjil Place’s new library could be described as a real page-turner. But libraries are so more than being aout books these days. And the three-level library at Casey Council’s freshly-launched civic-arts precinct is a multi-media and social wonderland. Officially opened on 6 November, the 1920-square-metre library includes free wi-fi, an inviting childrens zone with fantasy chairs and reading grottos and a youth zone with audio-visual and gaming facilities. There’s also a tall amphitheatre, an outdoor reading garden, an audio-visual art wall, community meeting rooms and a 50,000-strong borrowing collection. Casey councillor Wayne Smith said libraries had “evolved” into an interactive space for people to meet, chat, learn and be inspired. “Council couldn’t be prouder of this incred-

“The team at Casey-Cardinia Libraries are delighted to be bringing this beautiful space to life and creating visitor experiences that will engage and inspire our community. “We want to share the space and help people discover what is possible in a contemporary public library.” The State Government contributed $750,000 towards the library, which is expected to attract 25 per cent more visitors than the replaced Narre Warren branch. Narre Warren South MP Judith Couacaud Graley said that the library would “delight the hearts of our local book lovers, young and old”. “I have long advocated for a new library for our community and I am so pleased that the government has delivered this facility for our growing community. “Libraries are often the heart of our community and I have no doubt that the new Narre Warren library will deliver for all community members.”

SOCIALLY SPEAKING

Pakenham Berwick Cranbourne Drouin

On 1 November, The Berwick Cranbourne News Facebook Page shared a story of the Casey Residents and Ratepayers Association being labelled as “Losers in Exile” by mayor Sam Aziz, after they reiterated their criticism of Bunjil Place. CRRA spokesman Brendan Browne described the $125 million civic-arts precinct as a “nice building, but you would expect that when you spend ($115 million) of ratepayers’ money.” The story brought forward some strong opinions. Here is how reaction went online:

Sue Baldizoni: I have to go outside of the City of Casey to access affordable community courses! In the city of Dandenong I can do exercise classes for $5, anything in Casey would cost between $15-20 per session! The fundamentals of community access and participation are all wrong!

Glenn Latch: Having recently moved back to Melbourne, my head almost fell off when I discovered the cost of rates in my adopted suburb ... more than double the cost I was paying in North Western Sydney, with monthly hard waste collection and loads more. Something’s not right with Casey Council, which should be looked at closely. Brett Fitzgerald: You know first impressions

on the place are a precedent on how you see the place. The grass area around the TV is a complete balls up, levels in the grass don’t allow people to stand and see the TV or watch things from the back. And we pay millions for a botched up front yard? I did like the library and a few other places. The theatre (small) was good, but I think overly done, must have cost a squillion - was it to battle “The Drum“ theatre in Dandy? The gallery was OK, but failed to show anything other than the construction pieces of Bunjil - didn’t see one bit of heritage or native ideals, seeing it has a native name and all. Could have had old images of the past, showing what we’ve come from, you know. Aziz has a case of “one upmanship“ mentality and used Bunjil as an excuse to justify his new age world of council offices. Though it is an interesting building with European contemporary design to it, but it didn’t feel like or see any design feature, to show off or live up to its native name. As a ratepayer, I feel jibbed on its initial opening. Rhys Harrop: Happy to put in as many estates as you can, but can’t update the roads. The roads should have been updated way before all these 10s of thousands of homes have been built. $168 million on this s*** is a joke.

Kerry Bennett: You have a new building; why not use it for the annual AGM instead of in Hampton Park, another waste of money, hiring a building when one was just built, bloody waste of money. Belinda Burford: Just trying to outdo Cardinia Council! No rate rise. Still can’t figure out why my rates are double that of Mount Waverley where properties are more than double the price. Rick Brown: Why not spend $168 million on housing for the homeless? Damian Chapman: Sam Aziz is the mayor of ad hominem attack. Very Trumpian. Judie Hedrick: I agree with what has been written, very on point! Steven Breen: Where does this Mayor of Casey really get off here? Here we have $125 million of ratepayers money, yes ratepayers money so the mayor, his CEO and his councillors can now live in BRAND NEW OFFICES. Brand new offices all decked out like the Burj Al Arab Jumeirah - DUBAI.... This guy his CEO and his councillors are so out of touch with reality it’s not funny anymore.

Rosalie was at Beersheba By Cam Lucadou-Wells Casey councillor Rosalie Crestani has described a 100-year commemoration service of the Battle of Beersheba in what is now Israel as an “experience of a lifetime”. Cr Crestani, who paid for the trip “out of my own pocket”, is pushing for closer ties between Casey and Israel. She joined a travelling convoy from her church Catch the Fire Ministries and political party Rise Up Australia at the service. “I will remember this day forever,” she said of the service that marked the charge of about 800 Australian Light Horsemen during the battle on 31 October, 1917. The cavalry charge is known as one of the most miraculous. Thirty-one Australians of the 4th and 12th Light Horse Regiments were killed, 36 were wounded as they charged on enemy lines defending the town of Beersheba. They captured more than 700 Turkish soldiers and enabled Allied forces to break enemy lines near Gaza and forge into Palestine. “In this battle, the Australians were truly placed in an almost impossible situation but their resolve truly inspires,” Cr Crestani said. “I believe our Beersheba victory should have a more prominent place in our children’s history books than currently. “Our children should know the victories as well as the losses.” Cr Crestani noted the crowds of Beersheba school children who gathered around the Aussies, shook hands and yelled “We love Australia". She was also reassured by Israel’s “worldclass” security - which had foiled and killed 11 would-be suicide bombers that had tunnelled from Gaza the day before the service. “There was palpable relief that day. “Ironically I’ve never felt safer than when here within her borders.”

Rosalie Crestani and Rise Up Australia leader Daniel Nalliah at the Battle of Beersheba comemmoration. She was more impressed with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s “many layered sensitivities” than his Australian counterpart Malcolm Turnbull’s performance at the service. Mr Turnbull’s attempts to inject humour at the service received “golf claps” and “chuckles” from the predominantly Australian crowd, she claimed.

The battle is also a factor in Cr Crestani’s push for Casey to forge a sister city relationship with Ofakim in Israel. It mirrors Rise Up Australia’s policy for close ties with Israel. “The bonding between our two countries is inevitable,” Cr Crestani said. “The Israelis seem to understand this more than Australians currently.” She said a formal friendship between

Casey-Ofakim would be a “natural extension” of Israeli’s “profound appreciation for our allied support”. On her return, she said she’d like to be Casey mayor “with the city’s best interest at heart”. “I’m ready to be mayor,” she said. “I’m just not sure my colleagues are ready for me to be as yet.”

Jasmine, Chloe, Hayley, Josh, Amelia, Brigette and Melissa (artists) and Mia stand proud in front of their mural. 173076 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS A rare Rambler Royce - its 'Oneof2' number plate says it all.

Car city Speaking of nostalgic vehicles, Akoonah Park Men's Shed’s recent classic car show was blessed with brilliant weather. A 30-degree pearler drew more than 4000 to take in about 900 exhibits - including some of Peter Brock’s most significant vehicles. One of the eye-catchers was a two-of-akind Rambler Royce made in 1976. It used to be owned by former Gold Coast mayor Bruce Small, who introduced Surfers Paradise’s famous Meter Maids.

Got the munchies Police executed a drug warrant on Von Nida Drive in Cranbourne North on Tuesday 31 October, but not only were there a number of police vehicles in the area, a Domino’s Pizza car was also spotted pulling up in the street. A person, believed to be the occupant of the house who waited as police searched the property for several hours, decided it was past his lunchtime and had pizza delivered to the house.

What’s in a name? Not sure if this will catch on, but comedian Charlie Pickering dubbed an alternate name for Casey’s new arts centre on opening night

on 28 October. Obviously taken with the magnificence of the Bunjil Place architecture, he ventured the site will be known locally as Nazza Wazza Opera House. Quite the mouthful.

Picking up the pieces A Berwick reader gave the ‘thumbs up’ to a quick-thinking shopper at Fountain Gate shopping centre. The young lady ran up an escalator to pick up a small girl who’d fallen and couldn’t stand up. She made it just in time before the girl reached the top.

Slow out of the blocks A local driver has been priming up a 50-yearold muscle car across 4000 kilometres of outback bush-bashing. All for a good charitable cause, he lined up a photo shoot to publicise the spectacular vehicle and his mission. The only catch was he couldn’t get the car to start. After 10 minutes of fruitless trying, he phoned his co-driver. He let rip some colourful language when he was asked: “Did you remember the immobiliser?”

Portrait of the king As the song goes: “Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree, merry merry king of the bush is he.” But at Tooradin, this was not exactly the case. A kookaburra is now king of Tooradin Primary School where he sits atop a school timber sign, laughing all day long. Just one thing - he can’t fly because he’s one part of a mural painted by students across the school on Tuesday 17 October. Tooradin Primary School well-being coordinator Rachel Davis said the school was privileged to work with the artists from Melbourne’s Murals, Brigitte Dawson and Melissa Turner, to create a large school mural. “Students from across the school entered a drawing competition to work with Brigitte and Melissa to design and paint two large murals that captured the wonderful coastal environment of Tooradin,” Ms Davis said. She said the students were asked to use the local coastal or bushland environments as their inspiration, with bunyips, fishing platforms and Sawtell’s Inlet included. “Tooradin Primary School will position these two wonderful murals for the community to enjoy and for students and families for many years to come to share in the pride we all feel about our special coastal community and school.”

THE LOWDOWN Q&A

with Sarah Litchfield, youth services librarian at Cranbourne Library

What is something people don’t know about you? I used to be terrified of phones! What was your most memorable moment? There were four ... each of my beautiful children being born.

THREE … ways to pay respects on Remembrance Day

1

Join the minute’s silence at the Remembrance Day service at the High Street memorial, Berwick, at 11am on Saturday 11 November. Guest speaker is Berwick author Michael Madden who is compiling a comprehensive book on Australia’s 100 Victoria Cross recipients. The service, organised by Berwick RSL, starts at 10.40am.

2

Observe the minute’s silence at the Cranbourne war memorial. The service starts at 10.55am on Saturday 11 November.

3

Buy a red poppy. The red crepe poppy is rich in symbolism on Remembrance Day - the 99th anniversary of the end of World War I. It represents the flowers that first took bloom during the war’s battlefields where many thousands of soldiers perished. The Poppy Appeal is one of the RSL’s major fund-raisers for veterans' welfare and services. Lest we forget.

What would your last meal be? Fish and chips. What event, past or present or future, would you like to witness? I’d love to have witnessed Queen Elizabeth I’s coronation. What is your favourite television show? I’m loving Outlander at the moment. What is your favourite book? Too many to answer but my favourite author is Diana Gabaldon, who wrote the Outlander series. What six guests, dead or alive, would you invite to a dinner party? John Lennon, J.K. Rowling, Stephen Fry, Bill Bailey, Jamie Oliver (to cook) and Beyonce. What was your first or best concert or theatre experience? I saw Queen live at Wembley Stadium in 1986. Most embarrassing moment? Dressing up as Fiona the Ogress for Book Week, including a green face, was pretty embarrassing. What era would you like to live in? Medieval England has always fascinated me but perhaps just for a visit not to live.

Long battle By Cam Lucadou-Wells It takes a lot to stop inspirational 26-year-old cancer survivor Daniel Margariti in his tracks. After raising more than $7000 in 2017, Daniel will be back for more laps in the Casey Relay For Life event in March. Since he was 18, the Dandenong resident has beaten two serious attack of testicular cancer, serious infections and had large tumours removed from stomach, spine and liver. Far from bowed, Daniel has in the meantime finished a business and commerce course at Monash University, volunteered at a Tanzanian orphanage and at the charity Riding Develops Abilities. He’s also founded and led the Young Adult Cancer Support (YACS) group, and starting to mentor foster-care children through a Pyjama Foundation program. It should be little surprise that Daniel walked 13 kilometres over the last two-day Relay for Life. Despite just having 49 per cent lung capacity. He remembers fondly the support of so many including his family and friends. His 2017 team directed the funds to Monash University research into using the body’s “natural killer cells” to detect and destroy cancer cells. “Hopefully one day, the natural killer cells can defend the body without the need for chemo. “Chemo is such a hard thing - it kills your body slowly while hopefully killing the cancer before it kills you. “But it’s the only thing we have at this stage.” Daniel is no stranger to chemo treatment. But he also prospered from a stem-cell transplant trial as a last resort option in 2015 when his chemo was no longer effective. In the past few months, he’s been recovering from surgery to reattach his herniated

Daniel Margariti with his dad Bruno in the Relay for Life colours. 174397 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS abdomen muscles. There are also the mental battles of post-traumatic stress from the whole eight-year ordeal. “I’m not sure what life has going forward for me. “I’ve spent so much time in hospital, I’m just appreciating the chance to live my life. “To be able to do things for myself, to go out to the beach and go for a big drive means a lot for me.” His YACS group - made up of 43 young members around Australia - has been a key part of his life for the past year. At the same time, Daniel’s pitching in to promote Relay For Life in the hope of attracting 100 teams. The Casey event is close to raising $4 million during its 10-year history. The event’s theme this year is ‘Community Coming Together’ to fight cancer, remember and celebrate life. WHAT’S ON Tamble - The Australian Creedence Show can deliver. Fountain Gate Hotel, Narre Warren at 8.30pm on Saturday 18 November. Tickets from $30. To book phone 9704 7922.

’Sensory Gardens’ Come and explore with us the joys of creating a sensory garden. While all gardens can have healing effects, the idea of ‘sensory gardening‘ goes beyond. The environment created within a sensory garden aims to stimulate and engage the five senses so that they are accessible, interactive and have appeal to all age groups. This is a hands-on day that will also offer you the opportunity to learn how to propagate a variety of plants to help you start your very own sensory garden. Experienced horticultural therapist Steven Wells will be the keynote presenter. He is qualified in nursing and horticulture and has achieved a number of awards for his work. A.B. Bishop an experienced horticulturist and co-author with Angus Stewart of “The Australian Native Garden”, will talk about sensory aspects of the Australian flora and enlighten us on those extra special plants that we can use in our own gardens. Attendees will discover how a visionimpaired person experiences gardens from Vision Australia, as well as learning how to guide and explain gardens or bushland to someone with little or no vision. Cranbourne Gardens’ Manager Horticulture John Arnott and horticulturalist Nikki May will explore sensory features of the Peppermint Garden of the Australian Garden with participants. All-day Workshop: Australian Garden Auditorium, RBGV Cranbourne Gardens corner Ballarto Road and Botanic Drive, Cranbourne, Sunday 12 November from 9.30am to 3pm. Cost: members $60, non-members $75, and students $30. Register and pay via the booking form available at: www.rbgfriendscranbourne.org.au For further information contact Chloe Foster: 0420 504 367.

When Miles is in a mood By Nick Creely When Devon Meadows star Brad Miles is in the mood to score, there is arguably no other player in the West Gippsland Cricket Association more unstoppable. And in the Panthers’ District Division clash with Tooradin at Glover Reserve on Saturday, Miles not only surpassed previous records, but completely flattened them. The left-handed power hitter smashed his way to an extraordinary 260 - a knock that included 24 fours and 12 sixes - all in just 223 balls, as his side posted an utterly formidable 8/441. That makes it a total of 168 runs scored solely in boundaries. And he was only in the 91 at tea, making it even more mind boggling that only hours later almost tripled his score. It could have been a completely different story, however, with Miles dropped when he was just on six. Miles’ feat is now the highest score in Devon Meadows Cricket Club history and the highest score ever made in the District Division, surpassing Ben Maroney’s 201 against Nyora in the 2009/10 season. From the Panthers’ perspective, it is the highest team score ever made in their first XI, while Miles’s 162-run partnership with allrounder Lucas Carroll (31) is the club’s record for the fifth wicket. Since joining the Panthers for the 2016-'17 season, Miles has scored an incredible 1277 runs at 70.94 - including Twenty20s - from just 20 matches and 21 innings, with three centuries and seven half centuries.

Brad Miles winds up for one of 12 sixes during his record-breaking knock on Saturday. 174661 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS Previous to this, Miles has dominated with both Beaconsfield when they were in the WGCA and Aura Vale when they were in the FGDCA. Tooradin skipper Kane Latham - who was in the field watching Miles send the ball to all parts - explained from his perspective how it

was to witness the innings, and how he approached the day as captain. “It wasn’t as tough as you would imagine (fielding),” he said. “We had a chance that we should’ve taken when he was on six, and he’s a class bat that you don’t give chances to.

“He hits the ball clean and hard, it’s actually great to watch. “It was really about trying to stop him scoring, more than getting him out once he got going. He likes to score, so our best chance to get him out was to tie him down and wait for a mistake.” While Miles feasted on the Gulls bowlers in an astonishing display, Latham praised his side for never giving in and keeping the energy up in the field, and said that youngsters such as Mitchell Tharle, Connor O’Riordan and Ned Harrison led the way with their enthusiasm. “Keeping our boys in good spirits was actually pretty easy,” he said. “Often, we talk about these are the types of games that make you who you are. It’s all good to laugh and joke around when you’re flogging sides, but real character is built when you’re on the other end of these innings. “Our boys were in great spirits all day, having a bit of a laugh and I’m really proud of the kids in particular. They kept their heads up and their voice high all the way until the last ball.” Latham said that with players such as Miles, taking the chances when they present them is vital. “(There) wasn’t really a lot to learn from it to be honest, other than to take the chance when a batsman gives one early,” he said. “But our boys toiled hard all day and should be proud, but Brad just showed how good he is. He didn’t give a chance from six until he was on 220.” The Gulls face a daunting task of trying to chase down the record breaking 441 when play resumes on Saturday.

Bloods just dominated By Nick Creely DDCA TURF 1 REVIEW - ROUND 3 (DAY 1) Springvale South is in prime position for a massive win over Cranbourne, with the Bloods dominating the opening day at Alex Nelson Reserve. Sent in to bat, Bloods openers Nathan King (54) and Michael Vandort (33) got the home side off to an 82-run opening, setting up the day perfectly for the middle order aggressors. After being 1/95 at tea, and losing two early wickets almost immediately after the break - including the key scalp of former Eagle premiership captain Steve Spoljaric for a quickfire 22, the Bloods were merciless, ploughing almost 200 runs to declare at 5/277 off 70 overs. Dylan Quirk (77 not out) and Jack Sketcher (77) combined for an entertaining 130-run partnership to completely dominate, with the pair combining for 17 fours and three sixes. Steve Miller (2/72) was the only Eagles bowler to take multiple wickets in a tough day out in the field. Gun spinner Jarryd Straker (2/0) then struck two late wickets for the Bloods - including a wicket off the last ball of the day to leave Cranbourne 2/40 at stumps. Jakeb McVicar (0) and skipper Lucas Ligt will resume next week with a big task at hand. meanwhile, Berwick’s golden recruit Matt Chasemore struck his first century as a Bear in the Saturday/Sunday match with Dandenong West at Greaves Reserve. In what turned out to be a thumping win for the Bears, ‘Cheeks’ came in after two early wickets, and struck eight sixes and six fours to anchor the innings with brilliance, and brought up his century with a trademark boundary over cow corner - it looms as the first of many at the journeyman’s latest club. The faultless century lifted the Bears to 236 off just 50 overs, with skipper Jarrod Goodes chiming in with a brutal 31 off 21 balls. Brad Sheehan (5/45) was brilliant with the ball for the Bulls, in what was the youngster's first game of Turf 1 cricket. At stumps at the end of day one, a brilliant berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

Berwick skipper Jarrod Goodes claimed a hat-trick on Saturday. 165558 hat-trick by Goodes (5/25) saw the Bears have the Bulls 6/48, and hanging by a thread. The Bulls returned to the crease on Sunday, and with club legend Greg Siwes (69 not out) carrying the bat for 68.2 overs in an extraordinary display of concentration, they survived another 40 overs to crawl to 106. Goodes was the star, and bowled 13 maidens in his 21 overs, but Jarrod Armitage (2/16) was a class above and Cory Bevan (2/0) finished off the innings. With 33 overs to go in the day, the Bulls managed to survive only two wickets down to avoid an outright defeat, finishing on 2/70. loss to Narre Warren, with the Magpies just 47 runs away from victory. Batting first, the Cobras’ top order was dismantled, with Hussain Ali (2/12) and skipper Craig Boswell (2/30) taking three early wickets to leave the score at 3/14. In-form pair Kaushalya Weeraratne (38) and Michael Davies (27) took their time to resurrect the innings, and eventually helped lift the Cobras to 136 off 47.1 overs. Talented spinner Imran Laghmani (5/38) took an exciting step forward in his development with his first five-wicket haul at Turf 1 level. In reply, the Magpies are 5/90 and in the mix for a shock early season upset, with Lagh-

mani (31 not out), Janaka Liyanabadalge (25) and Jarrod Russell (23) all among the runs. Weeraratne (3/27) is in fine touch with the ball, and looms as the key if the Cobras are to defend the small total. In other matches, Dingley (150) president Kent Waring (57) saved the day against Hallam Kalora Park (0/45) on Saturday at Souter Oval, to leave the Dingoes in the contest heading into day two, mind-boggling bowling displays by Mitchel Minhas (6/19) and Gayantha Wijethilaka (4/20) saw North Dandenong (126) steal the show in an extraordinary day of cricket against St Mary's (39 and 0/18). Day one of the clash between Buckley Ridges and Mordialloc at Park Oval was washed out, with the game to be a one-dayer next week.

Lessons for the winless By Nick Creely

Austin Heldt was impressive on debut for the Swans. 174659 Serong, the 16-year-old spinner from Longwarry, was brilliant on debut, using his flight and variations perfectly to finish with 2/24 as the Swans mounted a late comeback in the middle stages, but ultimately the Cats found

BERWICK BOWLS Low, dark clouds greeted Berwick bowlers as the weather made an unwelcome return to wintry conditions. Rain held off however leaving reasonably good conditions for play. Three out of our four home sides posted a win this week, with the seventh side delivering a strong result against Ferntree Gully to maintain top position on the ladder. The eighth side also scored an impressive win on home turf against the team from Carrum. On the downside only one of the travelling sides bought home a victory. Results - Home sides Berwick 3 (66-4) were defeated by Beaumaris 1 (82-14). Berwick 5 (87-14) defeated Mooroolbark 4 (80-4). Berwick 7 (119-18) defeated Ferntree Gully 5 (51-0) to make it 5 from 5. Berwick 8 (101-18) defeated Carrum 3 (56-0). Travelling Sides Berwick 1 (75-3) were defeated by Mulgrave Country Club 1 (84-15). Berwick 2 (105-16) defeated Heathmont 3 (60-2). Berwick 4 (72-3) were defeated by Oakleigh 1 (78-15). Berwick 6 (72-0) were defeated by Pakenham 3 (97-18).

Casey-South Melbourne captain Lachlan Sperling is the first to admit that his side has severely under-performed in its winless start to the season, but will continue to back his team in to find a way to break out of a form slump that threatens to not only derail the season, but end it. After his side put up a more competitive performance in a five-wicket loss to Geelong on Saturday at Casey Fields, with young debutants Austin Heldt and Jonah Serong impressing, Sperling said despite the disappointment, there was plenty to take out of the game. “(There was) definitely more positive signs as a group, still not the result we were after but we showed a lot more fight despite scoring a sub-par total,” he said. The Swans were sent in to bat on a tough batting deck, and despite starting steadily, only managed to post 9/169 off their 50 overs. Heldt (31) at the top of the order was particularly impressive - particularly square of the wicket - and managed to survive a nasty spell by Cats’ spearhead Dom McGlinchey (2/23) to get the 19-year-old’s Premier career off on the right foot. He was ably backed up by Chris Benedek (34), who continued his strong form in the middle order, while Dylan Hadfield (35) and Brendan Rose (26) helped guide the Swans to a competitive total after being 5/70 midway through the innings. Casey spearhead Nathan Lambden (2/42) picked up the key scalp of Tim Ludeman caught behind for a duck to get the home side off to a perfect start, but a 74-run partnership between skipper Eamonn Vines (74) and Josh McDonald (61) saw the Cats climb into a winning position.

reers at Premier level. “Both debutants were super impressive Aussie at the top of the order stood up well to some quality bowling when the ball was seaming around a bit,” he said. “Jonah was also fantastic with the ball, showing great control and bowling to a plan. “For a 16-year-old kid to come in and do what he did was really exciting. “Both boys showed no signs of nerves and it gives us great signs moving forward.” Sperling again lamented the batting effort, with the Swans once again losing too many quick wickets, but backs his side to find a way to score heavier runs. “Obviously the intent and building up of dot ball pressure has contributed to (our) poor shot selection,” he explained. “But we have great faith in our top seven to get the job done and hopefully a few big scores as a group aren’t far away.” And the club will only move forward as they look to climb off the bottom of the ladder, with a winnable game against Frankston on Saturday the perfect chance to get their season back on track. “We’ve got quite a bit of cricket to be played before the longer formats begin but I’m confident we have a core group that will be competitive and put the results on the board that we’re after,” he said. “The boys are upbeat. It’s not ideal that we’re 0-5 but we know there are a lot of points on offer over the next three weeks where we can start pegging our season back on track. “We know Frankston has a very talented side and we will have to be at our best to knock them off. “We know 0-5 isn’t ideal but we will embrace the challenge to put the results on the board to get our season back on track.”

SPORT

It was two for the books By Russell Bennett It was a feat no-one at Kooweerup’s Denhams Road ground on Sunday could remember happening before - two outright victories in as many rounds in the WGCA’s Premier Division. The round-five result for Mark Cooper’s men showcased their ruthless side as they claimed 20 Merinda Park wickets for just 182 runs in a comprehensive smashing that pitted the competition’s best side against one of its biggest battlers. This simply isn’t the Cobras side of recent times that vied for, and competed in, finals year after year. Instead, this is a much more inexperienced group - one taught somewhat of a cricketing lesson by the rampant Demons - 97 and 85 to 1/132 (dec) and 1/52. While the Merinda Park boys struggled to take the game on in the face of some imposing bowling by quicks John Bright (6/29) and Jess Mathers (3/39 and 3/19), the home side had no such trouble with just two Demon wickets falling all game. The result came in the round straight after Kooweerup secured a stunning outright against a disappointing Bulls outfit at Cardinia. Bright was particularly lethal on Saturday and at one stage was on a hat-trick before finishing with a six-wicket haul from his 15 overs. Demons skipper Mark Cooper scored an unbeaten 63 in the first innings and followed that up with 4/11 off 14 overs in the Cobras’ second dig. Lachie Ramage (11 not out), Paul Bright (17) and Mitch Davey (18 not out, including a towering six over the carpark) were the only three Kooweerup batsmen needed in their second innings. “In both of our last two games we’ve lost the toss and bowled first, and things have just fallen in place,” Cooper said of his side’s consecutive outright wins.

Brett Reid was in ominous touch early for Clyde against Pakenham. 174660 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS At Clyde, meanwhile, the clash between the Cougars and Lions is evenly poised after the opening day’s play. Despite starting strongly with a 40-run stand at the top of the order after being sent in to bat, John Simpson’s Clyde was dismissed for 206 in 75 overs with Lions champion Dom Paynter snaring 5/51 from 19 overs - including the wickets of both openers, Brett Reid (32) and Dave Denton (12). In the wake of the opening day’s play,

“We’ve bowled and fielded well in both games whereas I don’t think either of those two sides (the Bulls and Cobras) batted to their potential.” Cobras opener Daniel McCalman was the side’s only batsman to reach 20 in the second innings. The Round 5 clash between Kooweerup and Merinda Park took place over both Saturday and Sunday on the weekend - contrasting to every other game across the association.

Simpson acknowledged that “we didn’t make as many runs as we wanted to, or probably should have”. A 51-run stand late in the innings between Pat Lawson (36) and Nick Sadler (23) played a key role in the Cougars advancing past 200, but Simpson - who top-scored with 48 before falling to Zac Chaplin - said his side should probably have made around the 250 mark given their start. “But 200, while it’s not a big score, still gives our bowlers a real chance this week,” he said. Emerald, meanwhile, will be looking to stave off outright defeat when they resume their clash with Cardinia at home this week. The Bombers were rolled for just 82 in their first innings with Kallan Braid-Ball claiming 6/56 from his 18 overs in the face of some attimes questionable shot selection. Emerald’s batsmen took the game on at stages but just didn’t have the application to stave off the likes of Braid-Ball, Matt Welsh (2/6 from nine overs) and Dwayne Doig (2/18 from nine). Bombers left-armer Trent Rolfs was particularly impressive in the Bulls’ reply, snaring 4/50 from his 14 overs, but the visitors ultimately reached 6/176 off the final 44 overs of the day’s play off the back of some strong hitting from Te Ahu Davis (38 not out) and Pat Nolen (46). The Bulls could well declare early on day two in search of outright points that could prove vital in their push for the finals later in the season. In the other game of Round 5, the Seagulls rolled through Upper Beaconsfield for just 103 in 49 overs at Tooradin with Kade Burns (2/31), Russell Lehman (2/26), Josh Lownds (2/3) and Bailey Lownds (2/7) all snaring two wickets apiece. The Gulls will resume this week at 2/82 with Tom Hussey (40) and Josh Lownds (7) the notout batsmen.

Big news for upcoming tournament NARRE WARREN BOWLS There is big news from Narre Warren Bowls Club with President Eric Sydenham announcing the sponsor for the upcoming monthly Aggregate Triples tournament (Berwick Mazda) will provide a Mazda MX5 for a weekend to a lucky bowler. Participants in the monthly event (held from December 2017 to April 2018) will be given a ticket for the draw to be held on the final day (11 April 2018). The draw is only one of many changes for the tournament which should be part of the opening of the new synthetic green. Only 32 teams can be accommodated so be early. The Club will also be holding a “skins” tournament for teams of triples on 18 November 2017, the weekend of the Vic Open with no pennant. For information on both events bowlers can contact the Club on 9704 9702. It was a slightly better day for Narre Warren Midweek pennant teams, as they had a win and two close losses. Division 2 travelled to Cranbourne RSL for a comfortable 19-shot win. Wilma Haringsma, Jos van Hout, Peter Hayden and Jim Millar led the scoring with a 19-shot win, 36-17, while Geoff Ampt, Reg Young, Judy Naughton and Rod Lane fought back late in the game for a 1-shot win (20-19), while Tina Courtin, Philip Howard, Alan Mark and Keith Mark just missed, going down by 1 shot (15-16). Narre Warren (1) 14-71 defeated Cranbourne RSL (1) 2-52. Division 3 just missed the win by eight shots at Cardinia Waters. Arthur Fitt, Nancy Pugh, Peter Castricum and Enid Gibb won 22-18 and

sults with little to smile about. Division 2 visited the strong Clayton Club and despite losing had an “honourable’ 15 shot loss. The only winning rink was Joe Selfridge, Reg Young, Bryce Dexter and Rod Lane who won 19-15. Geoff Ampt, Carl Lapham, Erik Luyers and Wilma Stevenson only faltered in the last few ends to go down 16-23, while John Wright, Jos van Hout, Peter Hayden and Zak Storm made a late charge to go down 1824 and Tim Joyce, David Wilkinson, Percy Herath and Jim Millar also made late inroads to lose 15-21. Narre Warren (1) 2-68 lost to Clayton (2) 16 83. Division 5 was at home for another win, this week against Mulgrave CC. Mark Groom, Alan Mark, Graham Dodd and Keith Mark won 25-17, Wilma Haringsma, Tracey Storm, Zade Bulmer and Ralph Devonshire won 26-20 and Paul McNamara, Ernesto Vergara, Eric Sydenham and Peter Lister won 21-15. Nancy Pugh, Philip Howard, Aaron Ottoway and Stan Robinson went down 15-23. Narre Warren (2) 16-87 defeated Mulgrave CC (8) 2-75. Division 6 had a trip to Eastwood Gold, and also returned with a victory. For the second week the charge was led by Wayne Grimsey, Jen Sherry, Peter Castricum and John Zanon with the same score line as last week (34-10). The three other rinks all had close losses. Darren Moore, Sharon Bull, Rose Rasmussen and Brent Grigg (15-17), Leo McGeary, Joe McGuire, A Peters and Reg Johnstone (16-22) and Len O’Brien, Stan Bulmer, Robert Beare and Geoff Miller (10-21).

Eric Sydenham played a key role in Narre Warren’s 87-75 win over Mulgrave. Len O’Brien, Pam Uren, Rose Rasmussen and Ernesto Vergara won 18-17 in a close game, but Stan Bulmer, Pauline Kempf, Truus Henneman and Micki Horton went down 9-22. Narre Warren (2) 4-49 lost to Cardinia Waters (2) 12-57. The Division 1(six a side) make big improvement with a close three shot loss to Edithvale at Fountain Gate. Jeanette Cox, Helen McCarthy and Andy Tobler won 20-14, but Denise Peters, Diane Peterson and Graham Peterson lost 9-18. Narre Warren (3) 2-29 lost to Edithvale (5) 12-32. Saturday pennant saw the promising re-

Wilma Haringsma joined Tracey Storm, Zade Bulmer and Ralph Devonshire for an impressive 26-20 victory over Mulgrave. Narre Warren (3) 12-75 defeated Eastwood Golf (3) 16-70. Division 7 was at Fountain Gate against Burden Park. Arthur Fitt, Glen Cadman, and Andy Tobler was the only winning rink (25-14) but Dermott McConville, Dawn Baker, Laurie Baker and Michael Graham (17-26), Stan Birkett, Ruth Tobler, Diane Peterson and Rudi Pompe (11-21) and John Green, Helen McCarthy, Dale Collins and Graham Peterson (8-30) all lost. MOTORING

New Renault style change By Derek Ogden, Marque Motoring Model range Renault Zen EDC automatic sedan $27,490 Renault Intens EDC automatic sedan $31,990 Sunroof Pack (Zen) $1990 ADAS (Zen) $700

With sleek and sporty looks, the new Renault sedan plays down the performance side of its hothatch siblings. While the Zen model misses out on mood LED lighting and a standard Multidrive experience, there is plenty of design features to put occupants at ease. The dashboard is sleek with a non-scratch soft-touch finish while the steering wheel can be optioned with a rich Nappa full grain leather wrap. Renault’s own R-Link 2 multimedia system controls multiple functions via a seven-inch landscape touchscreen (a larger 8.7-inch tabletstyle screen in the Intens model). R-Link 2 allows the choice of personal home screens, varying the size and position of maps, radio, contacts, navigation and other functions. As with a smartphone or computer, the Megane Sedan’s home screen can be adjusted to prioritise information.

Up to six user profiles are available, so multiple drivers can have the system pre-set to their preferences. Turbocharging and fuel injection give the engine the capability of 97 kW (130 hp) at 5500 rpm and 205 Nm from 2000 rpm, the same performance, says the maker, as a two-litre naturally aspirated motor. The seven-speed Efficient Dual Clutch automatic transmission combines the comfort of an automatic and responsiveness of a manual gearbox. Zen driver and front passenger enjoy the benefit of adaptive and lateral pelvis and chestlevel airbags, while front and rear curtain airbags are included for added safety. Active safety features include electronic stability control, ABS anti-lock braking, emergency brake assist, electronic brake-force distribution

and hill start assist. The higher-spec Intens model offers standard Multi-Sense personalised driver modes and interior ambience LED lighting with five settings to match the mood. The first thing to be said about the Megane sedan is how quiet the engine is at idle - silent almost, requiring a quick look at the tacho to see if it’s even running. Even under hard driving the engine manages to keep the noise down. That’s not the only pleasant surprise. A hands-free card has the doors unlocking and locking automatically while the boot lid opens via a kick motion under the rear bumper or by a button on the card. This opens up an expansive 503 litres of boot space, which with the 60:40 split rear bench seat folded frees up to 987 litres of loading space over almost two metres in length. The seating is said to suit five adults, but four would be more comfortable on a longer journey. Leg room in the rear is good, while head room is surprisingly satisfactory considering the sleek coupe-style slope of the roof. As mentioned, the turbo-charged technology of the engine errs on the side of economy rather than out-and-out performance, the Megane moving off the mark at a somewhat steady pace. We are told the best time to 100 km/h comes up in 10.9 seconds. For more information contact Barry Bourke Renault, 755 Princes Highway, Berwick. Phone 9707 2222.

Renault has created a modern dynasty of hot hatches on the back of a formidable Formula One motor racing record - think Megane and Clio. Now the French automotive giant has added to the Megane family Down Under with a wagon and sedan. In comparison to the performance-based Megane hatch with which it was born and bred, the new sedan is a stylish, premium packaged, practical vehicle, which is, once the steepish initial outlay is overcome, economical to live with. It comes to Australia in two models - Zen and Intens - priced from $27,490 and $31,990 respectively, plus on road costs and both featuring Renault’s seven-speed Efficient dual-clutch transmission. Power comes from a 2.0-litre Energy TCe 130 turbocharged petrol engine, the ‘130’ referring to the horsepower (97 kW) it puts out. The Zen sedan can be optioned with an Advanced Driver Assistance System Pack, which consists of advanced emergency braking interurban and lane departure warning, as well as a Sunroof Pack with electric sunroof, automatic dimming rear view mirror and sun visor with illuminated mirror. Front and centre is a bold chrome grille wearing the Renault badge and linking headlamp units wrapped in C-shaped LED daytime running lights. The emphasised horizontal rear light treatment almost meets in the middle, giving the sedan breadth to its looks from behind. In profile the Megane sedan takes on the sleek form usually associated with a two-door sports coupe, its flared wheel arches adding to the effect wrapping around the latest design 16inch Silverline alloy wheels.
