The editor’s desk No festival takes over Noosa like the Noosa Tri. It was a sea of lycra as about 12,500 athletes pushed their bodies to the limit and beyond during five days of events. For me one of the most enjoyable events was the Tingirana Special Tri held in Chaplin Park on the Noosa river. You could see the joy on the faces of participants as they threw themselves into the action and delighted at the cheers from spectators egging them on. And full marks to their buddies who made sure it was a great experience for them. In a change of pace, aged care waiting lists are growing as the population ages and increasing incidence of dementia. It can be a difficult decision to place a husband, wife, mother or father into aged or dementia care. They want them close by where they can see them, they want them to be well cared for and happy. THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT…

PRE-EMPTING THE TERROR BY MARGARET MACCOLL For the first time in the Noosa Triathlon Multisport Festival history, police this year included the risk of terrorism in their management plans. The local force was boosted to about 30 officers for the duration of the event, with extra numbers seconded from around the northern patrol area. This was in addition to a police event liaison officer working with Noosa Tri security staff which has been standard practice for many years. Noosa Heads Senior Sergeant Ben Carroll said a major operation was undertaken to mitigate a possible terrorist attack. “For the first time, we have made a safety and security vulnerability assessment for the event,” he said. “We looked at the route of the triathlon and projected if someone was to do something where would be the best spots. “It’s such a hard thing to service. We’ve tried to reduce the risk and secure the area

through measures like bollards.” Sen Sgt Carroll said given today’s climate and recent terrorist incidents, it was

something that just had to be considered. “I think we will see more and more of this for these large scale events,” he said. ●

WELL-EARNED PRIDE IN SPECIAL ACHIEVEMENT BY MARGARET MACCOLL Their laughter, cheers and smiles showed the joy and pride felt by participants in this year’s Tingirana Special Tri at Chaplin Park, Noosaville held on Saturday morning as part of the Noosa Triathlon Multisports Festival. For more than a decade Year 10, 11 and 12 students from Rockhampton North Special School have travelled to Noosa to join others competing in the Tingirana Special Tri. “They look forward to it all year,” physical education teacher Aaron Lacey said. Each student is buddied with a partner for the event. For Brendan, 16, it was his second tri and he was prepared after a few nerves his first experience. “I’m going full on this year,” he said. Smiling for Smiddy charity, the official charity for this year’s Noosa Tri, had about 335 athletes participating in the main triathlon on Sunday and raised about $350,000 for cancer research along the way. Spokeswoman Brooke Rose said about 30 of the group, who travel from across Australia, Singapore and New Zealand to be involved, buddy with participants in the Special Tri. The buddy job varies greatly depending on participants needs. Some need only a bit of encouragement, while other volunteers

CUP CARNIVAL NOOSA-STYLE BY HOLLIE HARRIS Noosa stepped out in style for the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday 7 November, with a host of local venues offering lunch, bubbles and plenty of fun for the annual event. The storm felt like it might hit the Coast right on race time but held off long enough for Rekindling to take out the truly spectacular win. The rain drops cooled everyone down and in true Aussie style, the fun continued on throughout the afternoon.

All hands on deck for the bike ride leg of the Tingirana Special Tri. carried their buddies to the water and helped push their special bicycles around the track. The charity has been involved in the Noosa Tri since 2010. Smiling for Smiddy buddy Rhiannon German came from Mackay “to help out” at this year’s Tingirana Tri. “We’ve all got family and friends that have been affected by cancer,” she said. “This is a good way to stay active and raise

some money for research.” It was the fourth Tingirana Tri for Anthea Boyd of Biloela who became a member of the Smiddy family after billeting riders on Smiddy’s annual cycling fund-raiser. For Anthea it is connecting with the Smiddy family and helping others to be involved in an event they could not otherwise do that draws her to Noosa each year. ●

CASTLE

IN THE AIR Adrienne's tranquil beachside retreat is a godsend to carers needing a break. Pictures: Dave Gleeson, surfshots.com.au

BY HOLLIE HARRIS

S

unshine Beach resident Adrienne Penny began doing Airbnb in 2015 when her children had left home. With an empty self-contained apartment downstairs which had previously been used to host homestay students, Adrienne decided to take her love for meeting people from different parts of the world one step further and earn an income as well. With more than 100 visits and many returning a second or third time, Adrienne’s Airbnb apartment had become a success - but something was missing. Two years ago Adrienne opened her door to a very special group within our community and not from a want of profit, but from the good of her heart. “I wanted to do some form of community service, but having unscheduled, varied workdays and hours, I was unable to commit to a regular timeslot for volunteering. A good friend suggested using my downstairs self-contained apartment of my house.” Inspired by the example and legacy of her mother, Adrienne decided to use the apartment to help carers who desperately need a few days' respite by offering them a few days' break for free. There are approximately 45,000 unpaid carers providing support to family members or friends who have a disability, mental illness, chronic condition, terminal illness or who are frail aged on the Sunshine Coast.

At a Sunshine Coast Carers Forum held in April this year, the number one concern expressed by carers attending was the need to increase available respite options. Lack of access to regular and emergency respite was a great concern to many of the participants. With the help of Carers Queensland putting Adrienne in contact with carers who were most in need of a few days' break, The Carers Project had begun. Adrienne has provided much-needed time out for about 14 carers over the past two years. The carers that have been able to take up an accommodation offer have been extremely grateful to Adrienne for her selfless support. “My eyes have been opened, getting a glimpse into the world of a carer. I am in total awe of the resilience, unconditional love, enduring support and selflessness shown to others in the role as carer, on a daily basis,” she said. “I have learned there are more than 2.5 million largely unpaid carers in Australia looking after family members with chronic physical and mental illnesses, disabilities, aged care.” Adrienne is hoping that by spreading the word about The Carers Project, the many people in our community who are letting a space on Airbnb could perhaps consider the idea of giving a few days' respite to carers. “What is needed now is for there to be awareness - an

awakening, followed by a call to action. I want to start the ball rolling and get it out there, so others can get on board and many more people - carers and respite givers alike - can reap the numerous benefits and make a positive difference to community and the world,” Adrienne said. “What I have learned from carers who have stayed here, is that this opportunity for some time out has made a huge difference to them. “It has inspired me, meeting such wonderful, selfless people and knowing I can help to make a positive difference in someone’s life.” Many carers have had to give up work to look after their loved ones and financial circumstances mean paying for some time out for themselves simply isn’t an option. “Each and every one has been so very appreciative of the opportunity for a break, which they otherwise wouldn’t have had and tell me how much a difference it can make to their ability to go on,” Adrienne said. One of the carers who stayed at Adrienne’s said: “I felt acknowledged and supported by taking up this (Adrienne’s) offer. Having a few nights' holiday was so refreshing and relaxing and it uplifted me immensely. It was a wonderful gift that was so much appreciated.” Adrienne has recently been named as the winner of the Regional and State Carers Queensland, Carer Friendly Business Awards, in the Great Service Category.

Adrienne offers her Airbnb space to carers who really need a break free of charge. Even the furry friend can enjoy a beach break.

She has made it her mission to get this initiative out there and inspire others who may have a similar space available to get on board and offer carers a few days' break from routine spent in a quiet, relaxing environment to recharge and refresh. “The carers coming to me are mostly from the Sunshine Coast, but have also been referred to me from other regions in Queensland, such as Toowoomba, Ipswich and the Gold Coast. I gather there is a waiting list of carers who would love to have a break and are given priority according to need. “It is ideally suited to people doing Airbnb because they are well set-up and used to having people to stay and will often have times when their space is free. It could also work with anyone who has a spare room or part of their house not being used,” Adrienne said. The process is simple. If you are interested in finding out how to get involved in The Carers Project, contact Carers Queensland on 1800 242 636. They can refer carers who need some respite the most and then it’s up to you to create a schedule during your Airbnb quiet times for carers to take a break. “What you get back from being able to help such deserving people is immeasurable. “Learning I have in some way helped to make another person’s life a little better. It may only be for a short time, but I’m told it has some continuing benefit. It’s made a difference to them.” ●

WAITING LIST FOR CARE BY MARGARET MACCOLL Rhana Morton of Noosa Heads has just put her husband on the waiting list for a place at Noosa Care’s dementia unit but is uncertain when one may become available. Noosa Care has 27 people on the waiting list for its dementia unit and 53 on its waiting list for supported care, making a total of 80 across its aged care accommodation places of Carramar at Tewantin and Kabara in Cooroy. The not for profit aged care provider is in the planning stages of expansion with an aim to enlarge its dementia unit by 48 beds. “The reason to expand is to meet the needs of the community,” spokeswoman Danah Wood said. “Most of the time they don’t come in here until they’re ready. It’s 24-hour care, it’s high needs care. “The memory unit is such a lovely unit. There’s a men’s shed, herb garden, chickens and diversional therapy working with art, craft and cooking. There are lots of outings. Whatever they want to do, we foster that. There’s no set itinerary. If they’re up at 2am and want to bake cookies there’s a staff member ready to cook cookies.” Rhana’s husband had run an architectural practice for 60 years before he was diagnosed with alzheimers in 2011. His doctor said he probably had the

illness for several years prior. “Looking back now there were signs,” Rhana said. “Just odd things that didn’t sit well with him as a person. His vocabulary lessened, his comprehension lessened.” Rhana and her daughter Samm want their husband and father at home for as long as possible but have reached a point where he needs more care than they are capable of. He is a very social, outgoing man with a love of music, having played clarinet in a jazz band. They worry about his happiness. Rhana and Samm have visited several aged care providers. They like the feel of Noosa Care and its closeness to their home. It has the recommendation of carers they know. Danah said research showed there were 400,000 people living with dementia in Australia and by 2025 there will be an expected half a million. With this prediction of a “wave of dementia” Noosa Care wants to act now to expand within the constraints of council requirements, under the direction of the local board that governs it and being responsive to the community. Danah said they hope with approval to have completed construction by the end of 2018 and have residents moving in in 2019. ●

Rhana and Samm Morton hope to secure a fitting place for their husband and father.

BOATS OVERTURNED, THREE PEOPLE RESCUED BY MARGARET MACCOLL Coast Guard Noosa came to the rescue of two boats that had overturned on Noosa Bar Crossing on Sunday 5 November. Coast Guard spokesman Dave Gillies said at 2am fishermen on Noosa North Shore alerted Coast Guard to an overturned boat and three people in the water being washed out through the bar. “John Waddams left Munna with Coast Guard crew and collected the people, bringing them safely back to shore,” he said. “Low water over the bar had prevented the boat from crossing.” Later that morning, the Coast Guard boat was able to cross the bar when the tide had risen. The boat was located and towed back to base at Munna Point where the owner reclaimed his damaged boat. Again at 2.30pm, the Coast Guard responded to a call for help from an overturned boat that tipped in shallow water

The upturned boat recovered from Noosa North Shore Monday morning. as it attempted to cross the bar. The two occupants of the boat managed to walk to shore, and were picked up by John Waddams Coast Guard vessel and

delivered to base. Arrangements were made with the owner for the Coast Guard to retrieve the boat early Monday morning. Dave said these

incidents showed how dangerous the bar could be. “All boaties need to take extreme care while crossing the Noosa Bar,” he said. ●

DEMO DAY

There are very few people with a more diverse resume than motivational speaker, adventurer, athlete, pilot, Paralympian, mountaineer, dancer, triathlete and chocolatier Gerrard Gosens. Whether it is climbing Mt Everest, “Dancing with the Stars’, running marathons or creating a quality chocolate in his two Brisbane retail stores, there are literally no limitations in Gerrard’s world. What he has accomplished is outstanding by any standard, even more so when you consider he is congenitally blind. “It is all about persistence and the opportunity, more than genes. And my wife Heather always says, ‘Don’t ask him, because you know he will say, yes’. I am sort of a yes person.” Gerrard has a strong background in athletics competing in three Paralympic Games and six World Championships in events ranging from 5000m to the marathon. Triathlon really wasn’t on his radar until one day he found himself in the pool recovering from a twisted knee and an opportunity presented itself. In his typical style Gerrard said, ‘Yes’ and since then has embraced triathlon with all his might. “I used to hate swimming because it is boring and I was swimming up and down and one of the guys in the lane said, ‘Have you ever done a triathlon?’ and asked if I wanted to do one with him. I said ‘OK’ and that was 20 months ago. I did the Luke Harrop Memorial and it went from there.” Last year Gerrard made his Noosa Triathlon debut and not one to do anything by halves, he quickly followed it up with the Edmonton World Cup, qualified for the ITU World Championships in Rotterdam and is

now focussed on competing in triathlon in the PTVI class at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics. Gerrard makes a welcome return to Noosa this year with his guide, Ultraman winner David Kalinowski, and the pair are in town for a hit out before they embark on yet another challenge. To compete in IRONMAN Western Australia in December and attempt to break the unofficial world record for a blind athlete of 10:44:37 set by John Domandl at Busselton in 2016. Gerrard is quick to remind us that his achievements are about the team effort and not about one individual. He is keen to see an increased number of sighted athletes making themselves available to work with vision impaired athletes. “There is a lot in it for the guide as much as the athlete. For example when I go to Noosa or to Busselton, it is not Gerrard Gosens aiming to break the world record, it is the team of David and Gerrard. It is not about me, it is about the teamwork and we need each other to break the world record,” he said. ●

LANDING HANDOVER DELAY Johns Landing camping ground has been given an extension until 21 November to close, with all but two residents having been found accommodation and the clean-up nearing completion. Camp grounds owners Pat and Ben Johns sought an extension of the Noosa Council takeover scheduled for 31 October to move a lifetime of their own possessions after they helped tenants move. “It got a bit hectic,” Ben said. “There were a lot of people who left a week ago”. Only two tenants remained last week

waiting for accommodation to become available. “They didn’t kick anybody out that didn’t have a place to go,” he said. Last month council workers helped shift cars off the property. Ben said Gagaju Bush Camp had shut, pulled down their building and sold the cabin to his brother who was in the process of dismantling, moving and rebuilding it. Ben said he and Pat would be retaining some land at John’s Landing but moving to a unit in Tewantin. ●

NEWS BRIDGE NAMED FOR TRI TRAILBLAZER The Garth Prowd Bridge named in honour of the man affectionately known as the Godfather of Australian triathlon is the last bridge runners and cyclists cross as they finish the Noosa Triathlon. Affectionately known as the Godfather of Australian triathlon Garth was a pioneer of sports tourism in Queensland and a passionate advocate for sports participation. Garth played a key role in the birth of the Noosa Triathlon, which he ran through his event management company USM Events for more than 30 years. Under his stewardship, the Noosa Triathlon became the world’s largest Olympic distance triathlon. The Noosa Tri holds many memories for Garth’s family who were at the bridge naming on Saturday. His daughter Megan spoke of her

father’s vision for the triathlon which not always clear to everyone around him at the time but has now been realised, and of her surprise at his effect on others. “It’s amazing how many of dad’s friends have come out and said what an inspiration he was,” she said. “Garth was an amazing individual who has made outstanding contributions to the Noosa community,” Cr Jess Glasgow said. Following his sudden passing in July Noosa Council received a request to name a local landmark in his honour. “Over the years many thousands of athletes taking part in the Noosa Triathlon, including Garth himself, have run and cycled across the bridge, making it a fitting local landmark to name in his honour,” Cr Glasgow said. ●

MULTI SPORT WAS SUPER The Noosa Triathlon Multi Sport Festival’s “Super Saturday” lived up to its name with the massive crowd lining Noosa Parade treated to some the most exciting and closest cycling and road racing in the event’s history. Four new names went into the Noosa record books with Melbourne athletes Jordan McWilliamsz and Melissa Duncan taking the honours in the ASICS Noosa Bolt and Bora Hansgrohe professional Jay McCarthy and Specialized’s Lucy Bechtel triumphant in the gruelling Subaru Australian Open Criterium. Noosa was at its stunning best with glorious sunshine and a light breeze making for ideal race conditions. Melissa was stoked with the result

and totally smitten with Noosa and the Multi Sport Festival. “I came here on a family holiday quite few years ago, so I recognised parts of it but I love it. I want to come back and I want to stay longer too. It is beautiful,” she said. The “Super Saturday” grand finale was the men’s criterium that included many of the best European tour riders and in-form local riders fresh from the National Road series. Overcoming a mechanical issue that saw him limited to two gears it was clearly Maryborough’s Jay McCarthy’s day. He was just too strong and snapped up his first Noosa title. ●

ON CALL AND READY TO ASSIST A mixture of doctors, nurses, paramedics and first aiders from Assist First Aid were on hand across events during the Noosa Triathlon Multisport Festival to deliver first aid whenever and wherever needed. First responder Ashley Lloyd said the organisation had supported the event for a number of years and this time brought a team of about 25 members. “We cover all aspects of the course,” he said. “We’ve got people everywhere for the whole five days. We’re prepared for all eventualities. “We love doing this event. There’s so much fun.” ●

TRUCK CARDBOARD FIRE RAISES ALARM BY MARGARET MACCOLL Environmental damage was the major concern for Noosa firefighters when they were called to extinguish a cardboard fire in a Cleanaway truck at the service station on Poinciana Avenue, Tewantin, on Monday 6 November. Fire station officer Don Wilson said a large bin being picked up by the truck came in contact with the power supply, causing a fire. “We had to wait for Energex to disconnect the power, and then used water to contain it,” he said.

Officers contacted their scientific branch because they were going to flood the truck, but were concerned about the potential of toxic material entering drains. However, word came back there was no environmental risk from the cardboard that caught fire. Don said a smouldering fire remained inside the truck. They estimated the truck contained about six tons of cardboard, so they got it to a stage where Cleanaway could take it back to its yard to empty the truck and extinguish the smouldering contents. He said there was no risk to the service station. ●

KIDS FACES OF … the Noosa Triathlon

KIDS GIVE RIVER TRI

“It’s Peter’s third and my first. Once you’ve been here once you bring friends and family and it becomes a yearly holiday,” Catrina Pritchard said. Catrina raised Peter and Catrina $1500 to enter alongside 15-20 other Pritchard. RSPCA fund-raisers. “I had a rescue dog and thought it was a good charity to support,” she said. After breakfast and a check they had everything they needed for the race the couple arrived early to pump up bike tyres and attach their helmets, shoes and kit to their bikes before the bike transition area shut at 6am. It was then a wait for Peter’s age race at 7.15am and Catrina’s turn in the charity section at 8.53am. Peter and Catrina Pritchard of Brisbane. It’s my seventh Noosa Tri but I’ve been doing triathlons for 10 years. Once I did the first one I thought it’s great. The atmosphere at Noosa is great. It’s very congested here Andrew Angus. to take photos but I prefer the course at Noosa. It’s the best tri in Queensland. The volunteers are amazing. Everyone is so upbeat. Where we waited for

the shuttle bus there was tea and biscuits and a sausage sizzle. Andrew Angus of Brisbane. Twenty years ago we came up here for our wedding anniversary. We didn’t know it was on but we wound up doing some races. I’ve just run the Berlin Marathon. I’m just doing the Peter Doherty and run in a team event. Jan Swinhoe. Peter is doing the whole thing. This is my first time in a team. A friend from high school who lives in Brisbane is here and my nephew is doing it too. Jan Swinhoe with Peter Doherty of Sydney. The Australian Defence Force was well represented at the Noosa Tri with 70-80 personnel competing. Among them was former Navy paramedic Mikaela Millin and Mikaela Millin Jonathan Hough. taking part in her first triathlon in her first visit to Noosa. Having left the Navy three months ago to begin work as a civilian paramedic based at Jimboomba, Mikaela brought together the chance to compete in a triathlon with some sight seeing of Noosa and plans to visit again soon.

BY MARGARET MACCOLL Thousands of children charged into Noosa River at Chaplin Park on Saturday to begin their swim leg of the Kids Tri followed by a cycle and run. Connor MacLeod, 9, of Sunrise Beach was “nervous” at competing in his first Tri. Connor had never swum in the river before but he was well prepared for the event with a stack of sports experience under his belt. As well as being a nipper at Noosa Connor plays AFL, basketball, soccer and cricket. First timer Laila Moloney, 10, of Noosa was “a little bit nervous”. “I’ll probably get kicked in the head (in the swim),” she said. Her friend Alyssa Dinnage, 10, who competed last year was “excited”. “Last year it was pretty fun,” she said. There were plenty of smiles at the end of the event. Alexander Nicholls, 11, of Peregian Springs said “it was very fun”. “The worst part was the swim,” he said. “My arms tired out.” But that won’t stop Alexander coming back. “I’ll do it every year,” he said.

TOO CLOSE TO THE ACTION There were more than athletes taking a dip at the 1000m Ocean swims at Noosa Main Beach on Friday. With the tide coming in quickly one photographer got in a little too deep

while taking an action shot and one expensive camera and lens took a dive. Lucky he had a dry cloth on hand to wipe it dry and in true professional style carried on across the event. ●

With 8500 athletes competing in the Noosa Tri on Sunday morning a few items were bound to go missing. There’s no better way to locate your lost thong than by sending in the retriever. However for the other athletes volunteers were on hand to help athletes keep track of their bike pumps, bikes and gear. All were numbered and minded by teams of volunteers. ●

All pumped.

MARKETS MAKE-OVER The Eumundi Markets upgrade is completed and is proving to be a welcome improvement for both stallholders and market visitors. The project was a joint initiative by Eumundi Combined Community Organisation, Eumundi and District Community Association, Eumundi Historical Association and Sunshine Coast Council and Experience Eumundi. The work included new pathways, lighting and retaining walls, new garden areas and trees, improved drainage, refurbished seating and new water bubblers and dog bowls. Division 10 councillor Greg Rogerson said the improvements ensured the market site remained safe and welcoming for its many visitors. “Throughout the project, council worked closely with representatives from Eumundi’s community groups and the contractor to ensure minimal disruption to the markets and ensure significant trees were cared for and considered within the design.” Experience Eumundi general manager Anthony Wynne-Hoelscher said the markets were an international destination and the Sunshine Coast’s biggest cultural tourist attraction with some 1.2 million visitors each year. “And, with more than 600 local microbusinesses taking up stalls each market day, the markets are one of the Coast’s largest private employers,” he said. ●

LEGACY IN ART, CULTURE Pomona recently lost one of its treasured residents and long-term volunteer of the Majestic Theatre, Robyn Jones. Robyn worked tirelessly in the community for many years as the president of the Majestic Theatre and PAI (Pomona Arts Inc). She is credited with establishing the Old Pomona Railway Station Gallery after securing the discarded Pomona platform buildings from Queensland Rail, and for retaining community ownership of the Majestic Theatre after working tirelessly to secure a record grant for the vital funding of its restoration. These remarkable achievements were achieved over two decades as a result of an ongoing collaborative partnership between Noosa Council and Sunshine Coast Regional Council, the Queensland Government and the Federal Government. ●

NOOSA TODAY 17

NEWS Noosa Today asked all seven State Government candidates for the seat of Noosa if they were elected how they would address three issues previously raised that are affecting local residents. Here are their responses: NAME: PHILLIP JENKINS NAME: GLEN ELMES MP (LNP) Suburb: Noosaville 1. Reduce traffic on Beckman's Road: We already have sensible plans to upgrade both ends of Beckman's Road. Nothing will happen until we force the state to act. I am willing to grab hold of the balance of power and use it to ensure that Noosa gets its fair share of state services. As a Green I don't often advocate road building, but in the case of Beckman's Road there's no alternative. The congestion and danger created by the inadequate road plus the extra housing forced in by bad state policy leaves us no choice. 2. Find a use for the Tewantin TAFE: Let's make the abandoned buildings into a Small Business Development Centre. Let's give people the core business, trade, and technology skills they can carry with them through several different occupations. Let's teach specific skills and also the core talent of knowing how to learn new things. Let's elect an independent advocate for Noosa who will swing the balance of power to get things done. I'l do the job. 3. Ensure adequate health care for Noosa residents: Two services essential to any decent society--maternity and mental health-

Phillip Jenkins. -simply don't exist here. We deserve these. Noosa-based orthopaedic services have already disappeared. Stand by for more services to go whenever Queensland Health needs to solve a budget problem. We can only get guaranteed permanent health services here in Noosa by DEMANDING them. We can only do that by electing me, because I promise to use my cross bench influence to secure the permanent health funding we deserve. ●

Suburb where you live: Noosaville If you were elected to State Government what would you do to address the following three issues: 1. Reduce traffic on Beckman's Road: I will fight for the upgrade that has been needed for decades. Labor have been in Government and in charge of Beckmans Road for the past 20 years, with the exception of 2 years and 8 months of an LNP government. An LNP Government will prioritise road and bridge upgrades and I will fight for Noosa to get its share. 2. Find a use for the Tewantin TAFE: The TAFE campus was built on a highly sensitive piece of environmental land with little accessibility by public transport. The community decided that it would be an arts-based facility with little emphasis on job creation. The LNP closed the TAFE because very few people used it and it clearly needed to be re-purposed. The Labor Government set up a review into TAFE which was finalised 12 months ago, the results of which the Minister steadfastly refuses to release. I want to see the TAFE used as it should have been from the start, a learning place that delivers jobs. 3. Ensure adequate health care for Noosa residents: The LNP Government started

Glen Elmes. negotiations with Noosa Hospital to give it certainty. Three years under Labor and nothing has been achieved. I announced in June 2016 the LNP's Noosa Hospital Guarantee to deliver an additional 30 year lease extension from 2020 when the current lease expires. This gives certainty to hospital owners to modernise, expand and create more local jobs. In addition the LNP will commit an additional $5 million indexed each and every year to increase public services in the Emergency Department and to provide greater access for public patients. ● Continued on page 20

Suburb - In the beautiful Cooroibah bushland 1. Reduce traffic on Beckman's Road We probably can't reduce traffic but we certainly can manage it better, as well address other critical road issues in the electorate. A rapidly increasing population to our immediate south will increase the burden on our roads. Despite many promises no local politician has yet delivered the duplication of Beckman's Road. I'll use my vote as an independent MP in Parliament to negotiate with the minority government to deliver the funding our community needs to get these overdue works done 2. Find a use for the Tewantin TAFE Noosa's economy is built on a billiondollar tourism industry underpinned by world-renowned environmental management. The next stage is to diversify our economic base, and the TAFE site provides a wonderful opportunity. I've been working with local business organisations and community innovation leaders to develop a plan backed by stakeholders to develop a hub at this mothballed site incorporating key emerging sectors like IT, education, hospitality, health and creative industries. This will deliver significant benefits to Noosa and be instrumental in product, enterprise and job creation under the iconic Noosa brand. 3. Ensure adequate health care for Noosa residents

Suburb: Buderim - but we are excited to be moving close to family soon . 1. Reduce traffic on Beckman's Road If elected I would endeavour to rectify this conundrum as a matter for immediate attention. This has dragged on too long and Noosa deserves better than constant red tape . Not being privy to main road survey results I can only assume that the hold up is the lack of state funding . So that being the case I would lobby hard to get these funds released asap and the roadworks to start ASAP 2. Find a use for the Tewantin TAFE As per One Nation policy I could see a viable option for the Tewantin TAFE as an under utilised government asset that could be used by a "not for profit "community group. Applicants would assume responsibility for upkeep and maintenance with little or no charges. There have been some ideas worth considering and one of those would be a strategic plan to recommission the old TAFE put forward by Oz Bayldon. If elected I would support this idea and the steps necessary towards this viable community interactive educational facility. It also happens to be a selfsustainable model that works well toward addressing the unemployment and "youth at risk" issues . 3. Ensure adequate health care for Noosa residents Healthcare is a top priority and major concern for many Noosa residents. There should be state funding (of our

Sandy Bolton. The new university hospital is a great asset but we must have our own modern, well-equipped hospital in Noosa; after all we have an ageing population and host a million visitors a year. I’ll use my influence as an Independent with a minority government to secure increased funding for public hospital services guaranteed for the foreseeable future. I'll also encourage the development of a medical precinct close to the hospital so seriously ill patients do not have to travel a long distance for urgent medical tests. ●

Reduce traffic on Beckman's Road: I'd use my leverage as a Noosa independent to pursue funding for duplication of Beckmans Road in the next budget. The State Planning Policy to dump 9000 more people in Noosa, before provision of adequate road infrastructure is an outrage. I'd also work in collaboration with Council to provide a public transport solution to peak hour traffic on Beckmans road and through Tewantin. It's common knowledge Noosa's existing roads aren't coping with current congestion and both major parties have taken us for granted by failing to adequately fund infrastructure, including on our hinterland roads and bridges. 2. Find a use for the Tewantin TAFE: After the LNP and ALP allowed the TAFE to sit abandoned, the State should accept Noosa Council's offer to take control of the site. Purpose built for education, ideally it should be utilised for job training, relevant to Noosa's next generation. Alternatively, with the recent announcement of a Noosa Council/ CSIRO partnership, the site is perfect for a Noosa Institute of Sustainability, tenanted by CSIRO's Data 61 Research Unit. 3. CAPITAL GAINS ARE RUNNING HOT HERE

David Conolly, Caroline Schleppegrell, Amy Gayford and Mike Hay celebrate the opening of Century 21 Conolly Hay Group's Tewantin office.

EXPERIENCE AND PRESENCE A hammer of a different kind fell at the charity auction to mark the official opening of Century 21 Conolly Hay’s newest office at Tewantin. The agency, with six years presence in the Noosa real estate scene and decades of combined industry experience, opened the new office at 97 Poinciana Avenue on Friday. To celebrate, the group held a fundraiser in support of Diabetes Australia. The latest opening was a testament to the success of the group, led by directors David Conolly and Mike Hay, now boasting four offices in Noosa Heads, Sunshine Beach, Peregian Beach and Tewantin. Mr Hay said the new office was a strategic win for the business. “Staying ahead of the game is our

priority, and by growing our business in key locations on the Sunshine Coast, we hope to make it as convenient as possible for people to get in touch and get to know us,” he said “We want the greatest successes for our clients and believe it is essential to be close to the local community to achieve this. “Whether it’s helping find the best schools for their kids, giving tips to spend time on and around the coast, or being there for anyone who needs us after a sale is complete.” The team of 24 local real estate professionals will continue to service the burgeoning local residential and holiday rental market.

Mr Conolly said the support of the Century 21 head office had been invaluable in driving the Conolly Hay Group’s rapid business growth. “The incomparable reach of the global brand and network has allowed us to develop a strong market presence as well as giving us the opportunity to work with agents from all over Australia and the world to exchange knowledge and ideas,” he said. “We are proud to be part of a network with such strong future vision and commitment to innovation, and feel these values strongly align with our own aspirations to consistently grow and improve.” ●

CAPITAL gains growth has slowed in the property market across the capital cities and the country, but not here. The Sunshine Coast experienced the highest growth rates in Queensland in the past year, at 6.6 per cent, according to CoreLogic. Growth rates on the Gold Coast were the next strongest in Queensland, at 5.4 per cent. CoreLogic director of research Tim Lawless said the September quarter had revealed the slowest pace in quarterly gains across the capital cities and regional markets since June 2016. “Despite the overall weaker performance, growth rates have been remarkably strong in some regional markets,” he said. The median sale price in Noosa Heads rose by 13.7 per cent in 2016/17, to $895,000, in Cooran it rose by 11.8 per cent to $397,000, Doonan 10.6 per cent to $785,000 and Sunshine Beach by 10 per cent to $1,160,000, according to CoreLogic. With the continued growth and infrastructure across the region as a whole, the local property market is expected to remain strong. South East Queensland’s climate, lifestyle and property prices continue to attract interstate buyers, according to the McGrath Report 2018, with increasing inquiries from young Sydney families who felt priced out of the market and investors looking for more attractive capital growth prospects and rental yields. ●

SPOTLIGHT ON TEWANTIN Noosa’s founding suburb, Tewantin is home to cafes, restaurants, shops and many locals who work in the booming tourism trade.

BY TESSA MAPSTONE SET around the winding Noosa River, Tewantin is a town on the rise. House-prices in the leafy suburb of Noosa have grown by almost 9.5 per cent in the past 12 months. With a tight rental market, a drop in housing supply and a strong 4.7 per cent yield, Tewantin was last month tipped as being one of the nation’s hottest suburbs in which to buy an investment property under $600,000. Originally a timber town, Tewantin was the first settlement and river port in the

Noosa area, established in 1871. Today it is the Noosa region’s administrative centre and launching point for the pristine Noosa Everglades, Noosa North Shore, the Great Sandy National Park and Fraser Island. It’s home to shops, cafes, a hotel and the Noosa Marina, and many locals who own businesses or work in the bustling tourist destination that is Noosa. The top employing industries for people who live in Tewantin are hospitality and accommodation, followed by supermarket and grocery stores, residential aged care services and hospitals.

Just under a third of homes in the suburb are rentals, with just under two thirds owner-occupied. Living Here Tewantin property manager Jo Pruss said Tewantin offered affordable house prices compared with other Noosa suburbs, and decent rental returns. “Tewantin is one of the hottest spots to invest in property,” she said. With its open spaces, glorious river vistas, forest surroundings and bustling main street with all the services you would hope to find in any town, Tewantin is in a prime location while remaining affordable. ●

BUILD AWARDS CAPTURE IMAGINATION BY TESSA MAPSTONE NESTLED in a bushland clearing at Verrierdale is a contemporary home, all square lines and shade sails, that has captured the imagination of the nation. Sparks Architects’ Tent House has won the People’s Choice Award at the Australian Institute of Architecture’s 2017 National Architecture Awards. Architect Dan Sparks said it felt wonderful for his work to be singled out by the Australian public. “I think it (the Tent House) allows people to appreciate how different, and perhaps ‘striped back’ our understanding of ‘house’ and ’shelter’ can be,” he said. “It perhaps plays with a certain romanticism of living simply (though very comfortably!) on a platform, under a tent, in a rainforest. “I think there is also an awareness that various systems explored in this building to respond to changing climatic conditions - are replicable in different building sizes and typologies.” The Tent House was one of three Noosa and Sunshine Coast buildings to be recognised at the national awards. James Russell Architect’s Mitti Street House in Little Cove and the Sunshine Coast University Hospital - designed by Architectus Brisbane and HDR Rice Daubney as Sunshine Coast Architects both received national awards. The Mitti Street holiday house - like the Tent House - embodied the spirit of camping, testing new ideas about ways to live and site-sensitive and climateresponsive design, blurring the indoor/ outdoor lines. Recognised for its sensitive response to Sunshine Coast culture and its vernacular architecture, the Sunshine Coast University Hospital received a National Award for Public Architecture. The jury said that hospitals were

local work came as a younger generation of architects built on the incredible work of the lineage of quality Sunshine Coast architects that came before them. “This coupled with our incredible climate and natural environment has, and hopefully always will, generate appropriate and highquality architectural responses,” he said. “I would hope that such recognition will give those considering engaging local architects the confidence to do exactly that rather than engaging architects from elsewhere in Australia. “Local architects would imbue their designs with a deep understanding of local climate and culture, support local economies and help build on a tradition of quality architecture on the Sunshine Coast. “Ideally it would also inspire all of us to think more progressively about our built environment, to reject what doesn’t work and embrace new ideas and forms.” ●

Recycling just got easier with council’s new Recyclesmart app, launched in preparation for National Recycling Week from 13 to 19 November. Available from the App Store and Google Play, it takes the guesswork out of recycling. It offers advice on what can and can’t be recycled, and explains the correct bin for different types of waste. Deputy mayor Frank Wilkie said the app also listed nearby recycling points for items that aren’t accepted in council’s general waste and recycling bins. A free outdoor movie night, free e-waste and battery drop off day, landfill tours, preloved clothing market, plus recycling and composting workshops are among council’s 2017 National Recycling Week activities. “This year’s focus is on taking recycling a step further by thinking of our waste as a resource and perhaps purchasing items made from recycled materials,“ Cr Wilkie said. “Although we are recycling more than ever in Noosa, we are still sending more waste to landfill than ever before. Being a bit more discerning with our purchases, and in the way we think about waste, can make a difference,” Cr Wilkie said. One of the workshop’s focuses on composting and if you’ve ever wondered what happens to your rubbish, take a landfill tour on 14 November, meeting at The J, Noosa Junction, at 9.30am. Council’s Waste Education Officer Emma Menzies said residents could all help preserve the life of council’s current landfill cell. “In March 2016 Noosa Council opened

Lachy Doley fronts a group of huge talent. This is a performance to see.

KEYS TO INTENSE BLUES Dubbed the Jimi Hendrix of the Hammond Organ, Lachy Doley is Australia’s most celebrated blues soul rock organ player. As the frontman of The Lachy Doley Group, he’ll be bringing his musical magic, energy and good times to The Imperial Hotel on Friday 17 November. Doley pumps, pampers and pounds the most unbelievable sounds from a keyboard: sounds that are intense, ferocious and sometimes transcendent. His keyboard has powered acts as diverse as Bernard Fanning, Jimmy

Barnes, Powderfinger, The Beautiful Girls, Jimmy Little, and The Widowbirds. Supported by hard-hitting Jackie James Barnes (son of Jimmy) on drums and Joel Burton on bass, Lachy performs with his treasured 1957 Hammond C3 organ and the incredibly rare custom-modified 70 stringed Hohner Whammy Clavinet - the only such machine in the country. Add Doley’s screaming passionate powerful blues vocals and you’ve got one mesmerising and unforgettable live show.

The Lachy Doley Group are a truly unique sound in the classic and sometimes very traditional genre of the blues. Their latest album Lovelight, released in January, is on track to surpass their previous album by debuting at number 40 on the Australian National Charts the ARIAS. It has reached number one on both the Australian Blues and Roots Airplay Chart 2017 and Australian iTunes Blues Chart 2017. Their previous album Conviction reached number one on the Australian

iTunes Blues Charts, number one on the Australian Blues Roots Airplay Charts and number five on the UK Blues Broadcasters Charts. The Lachy Doley Group will hit The Brewery after a massive 2017 that has included a tour of Europe and the UK as well as Canada. Bridges Not Walls, by Billy Bragg

Ashley Bell, by Dean Koontz

The Good Doctor

For decades now UK troubadour Billy Bragg has straddled the divide between firebrand political polemic and more personal affairs of the heart, but new mini-album Bridges Not Walls finds him firmly back in protest singer mode. The six songs were released online as singles at regular intervals over the northern summer to ensure that the narratives were immediate and topical; their message not diluted by usual physical production constraints and release schedules. The songs as such cover disparate ground but still hang together well: Not Everything That Counts Can Be Counted skewers market accountability, and piano-and-voice lament Full English Brexit closes with a state of the nation address. ●

The world is made up of people who go to psychics, and those who do not. Those who go want to be told what to do. Heroine Bibi Blair is most certainly not that type. She writes stories. She writes about people’s lives. And when faced with a grim prognosis about her own life she decides a re-write is in order. Dean Koontz’s gripping thriller Ashley Bell draws you along so many random threads from Bibi’s imagination that you are not sure what is real or where her story really started. With a twist of fate, what begins as a therapeutic massage turns into a clairvoyant session and Bibi’s world begins to spin with a quest. - Review by SuzAnne King, of Friends of Noosa Library. ●

Channel 7, 8.35pm Tuesday and Thursday

Having autism and savantism is trendy - very trendy. The latest autistic hero is Doctor Shaun Murphy (Freddie Highmore), a surgeon with autism and savant syndrome who starts work at San Jose St Bonaventure Hospital with the support of his mentor and friend Dr Ira Glassman (Richard Schiff). Based on the 2013 South Korean series of the same name - this version is from the person (David Shore) who brought you House. It’s entertaining and both Highmore and Schiff are great at what they do - and while the first episode is kind of meh there is plenty of scope to grow and it may become something more. ●

BY HOLLIE HARRIS Racing cars from the 1920s through to today are set to tackle the fearsome Noosa Hill Climb over this weekend in the famed Noosa Summer Hill Climb 2017. The event marks the 20th year of the hill climb, widely regarded as the toughest in Australia with its 14 testing corners through Tewantin’s State forest, fringed with unforgiving concrete barriers, rock walls and gum trees. Over 140 racing cars are expected to take the start line, ranging from a near century-old Austin 7 through to a pair of modern Toyota 86 racers with customised turbocharged engines. Cars are divided into numerous classes and launched up Tewantin’s Gyndier Drive at roughly 30-second intervals. The drivers race against the clock up the 1.5-kilometre climb, with spectators able to enjoy the action from grandstands and numerous other vantage points along the route. An open pit lane also gives spectators the chance to see the racing cars up close and talk to drivers as they wait for their next run. Highlighting the eclectic range of cars in action from all eras, the entry list features a 1937 Chevy Sedan, 1949 MG TC, 1959 MG A, numerous Ford Escorts and Mustangs, modern classic fourwheel drive Subaru WRXs, Mitsubishi Evos and Nissan Skylines, plus Porsche 911s, Jaguar XJSs and the fastest of all: the single seater hill climb specials. Standouts this year include a 1963 Watson Indy 500 replica with 5.7-litre Chevy

NOOSA TODAY 35

COOK

THE FEED CRACKLING TIPS

Woodfire Grill chef Marcus Denby shares his tips to perfect pork crackling. METHOD: Score your skin without cutting into the meat below. Try to do this the day before you plan to cook, and then leave it uncovered in the fridge to dry out. Heat your oven to 225 degrees Celsius Boil some water, and then pour over the scored skin. Dry the skin and meat with paper towel. Rub salt and oil into the skin and place your meat onto a tray (with shallow sides - if you only have a deep roasting dish, place the meat on crumbled aluminium foil to raise the meat, otherwise it will steam the side). Cook on 225 degrees Celsius for 30 minutes. The skin will start to crackle, and this is where most of the crackling process will happen. Reduce the oven to 170 degrees Celsius and cook for the required time according to weight (30 to 35 mins per kg). It’s OK to serve pork medium with a little pinkness, this is when it’s at its juiciest. The longer you cook the meat, the dryer it will become. And always remember to rest your meat for at least 20 minutes so all of the juices go back into the meat, and relax the meat so it’s juicy and tender.

MENU CHANGE TO SUIT THE SEASON If you’re looking for the freshest quality local produce this summer season, then head to Noosa Boathouse. This absolute waterfront bistro, bar and events destination on the Noosa River is now open seven days and chef Shane Bailey has a fantastic fresh new summer menu coming soon. He believes that a good menu should change with the seasons and reflect the place in which it was created. The modern Australian menu, with an Asian influence utilises the super-fresh tropical ingredients this region has to offer, including the abundance of fresh seafood, quality beef and locally harvested produce. Shane has created a great relationship with local farmers and fisherman, sourcing his produce from over 30 suppliers, giving him the best quality product available and a menu that is enhanced by what they have to offer. Soulfish Seafoods operates from the neighbouring jetty and delivers fresh locally caught fish every day, which goes straight on

the fresh fish menu boards, including four or five daily changing fish. Wherever possible, Shane will always source locally first, then Queensland produce. Noosa Boathouse is gearing up for a huge festive season, with Christmas lunch almost sold out. On Friday 24 November, at 5.30pm, on the Boathouse Lawn, they are presenting lighting of the Christmas tree again with Christmas carols. On New Year's Eve there are four events across all three levels including the early bird three-course feast at $49 per person, four-course dinner at $99 per person, sunset seafood and tapas in Sunset Bar at $79 per person and the “Let’s Get Nauti” nautical cocktail party at $49 per person in the River Room with live music and fireworks at 9pm. SHEDLOAD OF TROUBLE Fisheries patrol shed - call for removal of existing and new shed. Munna point is not the place for an industrial shed. Not only should the council refuse the application by the Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol for development approval for the partly constructed new shed but council should insist on removal of the existing shed and replacement of the trees and landscaping that have already been destroyed. The Queensland Department of Housing and Public Works cannot just ignore the Noosa Plan in such a cavalier manner. This facility should be located in the industrial area. Adequate boat launching facilities currently exist on the Noosa River. D. Castledine, Noosaville.

management plan (consultants engaged), implementation of transport strategy (project officer and consultants to be employed). I haven’t spoken about possible conflicts of interest or council’s promotion of NBRF but in conclusion could the mayor explain why he hasn’t corrected his estimate of electric bus trial costs (his $19,000 conflicts with another councillor’s estimate of $400,000) and why he hasn’t clarified Atmail’s involvement with Digital Solutions’ original appointment to manage the P.B. Digital Hub. John Lobb, Peregian Springs.

NOOSA'S TOO SAFE

HERE WE GO AGAIN Once again I find myself writing ad nauseam in regard to the lack of a suitable and safe crossing for pedestrian access across the notoriously busy Eumundi-Noosa Road somewhere between Eenie Creek Road and Rene Street Noosaville. I have been advocating for a safe crossing for many years and have written to Noosa Council and Sunshine Coast Councils (SCC) on many occasions and have written countless letters to local newspapers but to date I have got nowhere and I feel it has now become very much an election issue for our state candidates to address and I challenge them all to address this urgently. Since Noosa’s de-amalgamation from SCC I have written on two separate occasions to Mayor Wellington dating back to November 2016 when I requested he bring this matter to the attention of his council in conjunction with the State Government, my understanding being that this is a state road, to build a pedestrian overpass/underpass or anything at all for that matter which would enable pedestrians including the many schoolchildren and mothers with infants in prams to cross this ridiculously busy road safely, all to no avail. Mayor Wellington responded inter alia, “While roundabouts most certainly increase traffic flow, they unfortunately do not enhance pedestrian capability”. He went on to write “I will ask our staff to consider this issue in relation to the Eumundi-Noosa Road and “I am happy to raise the matter of a pedestrian crossing on the Eumundi-Noosa Road with my fellow councillors”. He further stated that “Whether or not it gets prioritised, through either the budget process or the forward capital works program, will be a decision for all councillors to make”. The matter rested there and I heard nothing further from council or the mayor until I wrote once again to Mayor Wellington in late June 2017 requesting he provide me with an update on where the matter currently sat with his council. A week later I received correspondence from the Infrastructure Planning and Design Department, presumably after Mayor Wellington had handed the matter over to council staff, stating that they were “continuing to investigate my request” and noting “it is of a complex nature and will take some time to be completed and I would be advised of the outcome once completed”. In late August I received a reply from the Technical Officer - Traffic and Transport stating that “An overpass is not supported in this case as this would be visually obtrusive on a major entry road into Noosa”. The council officer went on to state in bureaucratic language which when deciphered meant at the end of the day it was all too hard for council to ensure the safety of its pedestrians and was a matter for the State Government. He concluded his letter by stating that noosatoday.com.au

Marcella Barton sent in this snap of a happy visitor. “After the recent torrential downpours we found Freddy enjoying his spa day.“ If you would like to send in your lifestyle or wildlife pics from our Noosa Shire please email Lenscape at newsdesk@noosatoday.com.au “an overpass was not a viable option” before handballing the matter to the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR), adding, “Council understands TMR are considering the upgrade of Beckmans Road as part of the demaining with Noosa Council which in part includes an upgrade of Eumundi-Noosa roundabout”. As many of us locals would be aware this so called Beckmans Road upgrade saga has been ongoing since 2000 when the council came to an agreement with the Beattie-led Labor State Government that TMR would carry out the upgrade. To date nothing has been done since the Beattie Government promised to upgrade this busy road. To this day we still have schoolchildren and mothers with babies in prams and other pedestrians still trying to safely negotiate access across Eumundi-Noosa Road with neither Noosa Council nor our State Government prepared to take ownership of this by ensuring their safety as according to council to do so would be “visually obtrusive” and it is a State Government issue therefore it is not our problem and the State Government in turn not living up to its previous agreements and promises. A tragedy in the making no doubt and it will be on their collective heads. Michael Shaw, Noosaville.

MELBOURNE CUP FIELD Looks like we have a Melbourne Cup field for the Noosa Handicap Classic on 25 November. Favourite, but only just, after appropriate weighting from knowledgeable tipsters, is Elmes G, aboard the grand old (renamed) warhorse Let’s Not Pretend, out of ConsterNation and Gliberal. Elmes, along with his steed, is showing little current form, but who knows what could happen on a very sticky track and with so many competing nags. Edging into possible second favourite position is Denham M, aboard Annastacia’s Last Promise. Another familiar team, but lacking lustre these days as a result of too many recent engagements in India. This pair continue to battle on despite their lamentable local track record. A very close second or third, if the weightings follow expectations, is Jenkins P - a new rider to take over from that stalwart Shlegeris J who gave Elmes a close run at their last outing. His trusty steed Eat Your Greens is showing recent form in the big city and should at

least place, may even surprise the tipsters with a late dash to the line. Watch this one. The rest of the field appear to be rank outsiders, lacking known backers and will probably just represent a nuisance factor, which may upset the clear running if the other riders fail to dodge any involvement with them on the track. Pauline’s Peril has a start with jockey Whiteside E, but once again this nag is only likely only to attract the desperate and be a nuisance to the rest of the field. My tip? Fill out every space on your racecard with your own preferred choices and hope for the best. Noel Bird, Boreen Point.

JUST A FEW FACTS I’d like to remind the Noosa mayor of some pertinent facts. Many believe NSC is under-resourced and under achieving - asset management, capital works and transport strategy are prime examples. Rejection of developments for NoW, Noosa Fair and Noosa Civic have reduced community well-being. Projects like ZEN, New Democracy Community Jury, Keep it in Kin Kin, Bring Back the Fish, Dr Pages Road, Free Bus Service and Electric Bus Trial are seen by many as a waste of ratepayer funds. Council has a 'confidential session’ at the conclusion of every committee and general council meeting. There is a lack of disclosure surrounding councillor debates and media reports. The agenda for the next services and organisation committee meeting (Melbourne Cup afternoon) has some interesting quarterly reports: Carry over work from the 2016-'17 capital works budget has resulted in a 2017-'18 budget of $30.9 million (significantly higher than LGAQ protocol). Only 12.5 per cent (should be 25 per cent) of actual work has been completed (eg two per cent of $1.5 million allocated for Bridge maintenance, 0.8 per cent of $7.1 mil for pathways). The infrastructure services quarterly update shows council’s asset management plan and transport strategy are still incomplete. The CEO’s quarterly operational plan shows seven of 30 projects are behind schedule, eg Noosa River Foreshore Plan, asset

Noosa is seen by the major parties as a relatively safe seat and both sides of the parliament have put its infrastructure needs well down the priority list to fund projects in minority seats to improve their vote. The best change we can make at the moment is to make Noosa a marginal seat with an Independent member so whoever wins government will pay us some attention. I am supporting Sandy Bolton in her campaign to win Noosa because I think change is overdue and she is the right person to do it. Sandy has the commitment and energy to get the job done well. I have known her for many years and I can guarantee that her energy is boundless and she won’t be brushed off by the flick of the Ministerial hand. She will follow every rabbit down every burrow until she gets satisfaction. Noosa is what it is today because of the energy and attention to detail provided in the past by consecutive councils and local businesses as well as the constant scrutiny of the Noosa community. I think it’s time we got the same level of energy and attention to detail on our major infrastructure and economy from our local member of State Parliament and that’s why I am supporting Sandy Bolton. It’s time for some serious footwork to be done on the Beckman’s Road issue at a State level, and not just calling a petition the week before an election after six years of inaction and futile excuses about why it couldn’t be done. It’s also time for some serious pro-active pressure to be brought to bear over the fiasco of the Tewantin TAFE site, and not just writing a letter to the Minister and blaming everyone else for its demise. It’s time to look closely at Noosa’s economic future from a state perspective and not just sit on hands and leave it to the tourism industry and Noosa Council to build sustainability into our economy. Bob Abbot, former Noosa mayor.

Working from the Inside-Out.

1. Memory loss or a short attention span. Changes in cognitive behaviour can be a tell-tale sign of a mental health condition. If someone you know starts to experience frequent memory loss - such as forgetting appointments - this could be a sign of depression. Likewise, if they begin to have difficulty concentrating at work or school, thinking clearly and making decisions, it may be time for them to make an appointment with their local GP who may refer them to a psychologist. 2. Weight gain or loss. Most people are aware that weight loss and a loss in appetite could be one symptom of a mental health issue - but it’s not well known that overeating and a lack of willingness to exercise could also be an early symptom of depression. In many cases, the weight gain itself is caused by depression, not the other way around. 3. Irritability. Sadness is associated with depression and anxiety, but irritability can also point to a mental health issue. While everyone can be irritable at times, frequent or easily provoked irritability can be a sign of a deeper issue. If you’re noticing a lot of conflict at home especially, it might be time to talk to a mental health professional to see if something else is going on. 4. Fauxcialising (or social withdrawal). If you have a friend that starts to cancel plans with you in favour of staying in (fauxcialising) or they become less willing to participate in social activities, it may indicate that something is up mentally. It’s worth making an extra effort to talk with any of your friends who exhibit this behaviour, as it could be a silent cry for help. 5. Anhedonia. A lack of enjoyment in activities that once gave a person pleasure (anhedonia) is another subtle but common change we see in sufferers. It’s advisable to speak with your doctor if you start noticing

Early intervention makes the road back to a healthy mind easier. these changes, as they can recommend a variety of treatment or lifestyle changes which can make a big difference, like trying yoga or meditation. 6. Conflict in the workplace. Employees who instigate conflict in the workplace can be suffering from an underlying mental health issue. Businesses should work towards providing mental health support to employees, especially with regard to stress. 7. Loss of productivity. The number one cause of reduced productivity at work is mental health, which costs the Australian economy more than $12 billion per year in lost work and has significant impacts on staff morale and organisational performance. There are simple techniques that a local psychologist can explain to you, to help employees cope and boost morale. 8. Insomnia. Difficulty sleeping can also point to wider mental health issues, such as stress, anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and depression. It is estimated that 60-90 per cent of patients with depression have insomnia, with the cost of depression and anxiety attributed to sleep disorders thought to be more than $170.8 million. - Ochre Health Medical Centre Noosa is at 24 Sunshine Beach Road, Noosa Heads. Get your grateful on: Every morning when you wake up, before your feet have even hit the bedroom floor, think of three things that you’re grateful for, and try to make them three new things every day. Get your kids to join in at the dinner table or tell your cat. Just put it out there.

2

Just breathe grasshopper: Daily meditation has been proven to decrease stress and increase your happy hormones, but can also bring clarity. Life can be hectic, so take just 20 minutes a day to focus on breathing to quieten the mind.

3

The power of three - exercise, sleep and vitamin D: Put away the electronic devices well before going to bed. During the day, get moving - just 30 minutes of exercise, preferably outdoors, releases endorphins, to feel better instantly.

RETIRED OR ABOUT TO RETIRE?

BOLD LAUNCH FOR A LIFE Queen of Australian television KerriAnne Kennerley will be coming to Noosa on Wednesday 15 November for the launch of her book, A Bold Life. Over a lunch event at Noosa Waterfront Restaurant Kerri-Anne will discuss her life and book with Annie Gaffney of Annie’s Books, Peregian Beach. She has laid bare her public and private lives in her book, telling her tale of the girl from Sandgate who chased her dream of being a cabaret star to New York. It’s the journey of a unique and driven woman who built a remarkable 50-year career in a fickle and male-dominated industry. She was inducted into the Logies Hall of Fame in 2017, has been a successful businesswoman and tireless charity worker. Kerri-Anne has served on the Council for the Order of Australia and currently sits on the board of Golf Australia. Away from the spotlight Kerri-Anne has stared down a series of personal crises with grace and dignity including the latest in 2016 when a freak fall left John, her devoted husband of 33 years, a return it to a fully functioning and welcoming centre for visitors and tourists. Located at the entrance to the Upper Noosa River National Park, the information centre at Kinaba was built in 1978, and opened to the public in 1979. The centre was originally permanently operated by Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) rangers, however Kinaba has not been staffed for many years, despite visitor numbers continuing to be high. AROUND THE GROUNDS CHAMPION TAYLAH’S UP FOR GAMES GLORY BY RON LANE When the referee at the Australian Armature Boxing Championships in Sydney, raised the hand in victory of Cooroy’s Impact Boxing Academy fighter Taylah Robertson, it announced to the boxing fraternity that not only was this 19 year old now the national 51kg champion, but also she would represent her country at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. After contesting three fights in three days to win the championship it was in Taylah’s words, “amazing, simply amazing; all the hard work and now lots of things are happening.” Regarding the fight Taylah said: “My opponent was very tough but I felt in control throughout the whole fight and at the end I felt confident that I had won.” Much to her credit she immediately took the opportunity to thank and acknowledge her coach Mark Evans. “It would have been impossible without him; been together a long time, it’s been great.” For this student and coach team it has been something of a seven-year journey; first with her as a junior, then as a youth and finally as an elite. “This is her first year as elite,” Evans said. “Some time ago when she was setting her goals she worked out that her first year as an elite would be the year of the Commonwealth Games so she made that her goal. Now she has won she realises this is her year, she will fight in front of millions; the stadium crowd plus the TV viewers. “It will definitely be a tough tournament, fighters from all over; there will be so much riding on it.” Another hot contender for a position on the Games team was Impact’s Tyler Blizzard. Boxing in the 56kg division he was very unlucky, fighting his way through to the final only to lose on a split decision. In the semi-final he was up against the red hot favorite but caused a sensation by winning a points decision. “This was his best performance,“ oach

Taylah Robertson. Evans said. “He was all over his opponent; but I think that maybe it took a little bit too much out of him so that in the final he had lost just a little of his edge. “Unfortunately that’s the way it goes in boxing.” However for this young man it has been a good year for early on he made the Australian team to box in the World Titles in Germany; definitely no mean feat. Interesting to note that for coach Evans, his two big success stories have both been girls. First was Ella Boot who won the gold medal at the Youth Commonwealth Games in the Bahamas and now Robertson’s win in the Australian Titles. Just think about it; all these achievements have come out of a little tin shed at the back of his house among the trees in Cooroy. Later this month Evans and Boot will fly to India where in Guwahati, Boot will represent her country fighting in the Women’s Youth World Championships. As I said before, move over boys the girls are back in town.

Commonwealth Games team members Ashleigh Gentle and Jake Birtwhistle shut down all challengers and recorded stunning victories in the 35th running of the iconic Noosa Triathlon. Gentle made it four Noosa titles in a row and five overall, equalling Emma Snowill’s record, while Birtwhistle had his breakthrough race, improving on his third and second places of previous years. Gentle’s fifth title had far more significance than her previous wins and she dedicated her race to her long-time supporter and friend, the late Garth Prowd. “Garth will always be a part of Noosa tri and I am so happy that I was able to race well and race for him as well,” she said. Emma Snowsill shared the moment with Ashleigh at the finish line. “All credit to Ash she has really come through and like a lot of us in Australia we have used this race as a platform to the international stage. Ash has shown that this year being number two in the world, qualifying for the Commonwealth Games team and coming away with her fifth win at Noosa,” Snowsill said. Gentle will return in 2018 to defend her title. After making the podium for the past two years, Birtwhistle’s victory was very satisfying and a childhood dream come true. “Noosa is a race that everyone wants to do and everyone wants to win. Especially for us Aussies who grew up watching it and idolising the champions of this event,” he said. Birtwhistle’s win didn’t come easy and he had to call on all his resources to hold off challenges from former winners Aaron Royle and Dan Wilson, and Olympian Ryan Bailie. “It was good conditions but a bit hot for a Tasmanian,” he said.

Joy for Jake Birtwhistle as he crosses the finish line. “But I was happy to hold it together. This was the most stacked field I have raced in at Noosa, a quality field and that makes it all that sweeter to get the win. “Commonwealth Games is my focus now. I do take a bit of confidence from this and I am ready to prepare for early next year on the Gold Coast.” ●

KING AND QUEEN OF SEA BY MARGARET MACCOLL Noosa local Nick Sloman and Alexandra Headland’s Lani Pallister are the newly crowned Arena Noosa 1000 Ocean Swim champions, with stunning displays of controlled open water swimming in front of a packed Noosa Main Beach. It was fifth time lucky for Sloman, the 19-year-old Noosa Aquatic Centre swimmer, finally taking out the coveted Noosa 1000 title considered one of the most prestigious races in Australia. The pace was on from the gun but Sloman was able to use the conditions to his favour delivering the final blow at the last buoy and heading for the finish line to record a stunning victory. “It was definitely fast. It always is and I just tried to stay as easy as possible for the first 500m and try and gas them at the transition. That is exactly what I did.” “The run in the middle of the course is what makes it so hard because it is a different type of cardio and it really gets the heart rate up. It was also a little bit choppy and that makes it difficult, especially when you are trying to pick up the pace. You hit a chop and slow right down, so it is hard to maintain pace but they are also good

Swim winners Lani Pallister and Nick Sloman. conditions to break the opposition.” Fifteen-year-old USC Spartans swimmer Lani Pallister made short work of the 1km swim dominating the open female race despite not enjoying the choppy conditions. “I thought it was going to be a lot smoother and because it was choppy I swallowed a lot of water. It was a great race but a little bit over what I normally do with 800s but I really enjoyed it.” “I was nervous the whole way through but once I crossed the line it was a great feeling. this is the second year I have done the swim so it was great to improve on that result. It is fantastic.” ● noosatoday.com.au

LIFE OF BRINE

PHIL JARRATT

Sitting at tenth on the Qualifying Series rankings, current World Junior Champion Macy Callaghan made a huge leap towards making the championship tour in 2018 with a hard-fought equal third at the Port Stephens Toyota Women's Pro at Birubi last weekend. With a handful of qualifiers still to go, the exciting 17-year-old has a big chance to become one of the youngest qualifiers ever.

Blokes night out at Cronulla. From left: Terry Richardson, the author, Graham Cassidy, Steve Core, Terry Brown. Picture: JOHN VEAGE

ON THE ROAD AGAIN The world’s longest book tour finally concluded last week, back in Sydney where it began three months ago. Well, when I say concluded, I mean for the moment. There’s every chance we might rev up for another function or two locally before Christmas. It’s been a wild and crazy ride these past few months, with three overseas trips squeezed into the mix while doing more than a dozen Life Of Brine launches and functions around the country and in New Zealand. Over that time the book has sold out its first print run and is motoring through its second, far exceeding the expectations of its publishers, its author and many of his skeptical friends. It was fitting that the tour should end with two events in Sydney that reflected the beginnings of a lifetime in surfing that started nearby. In Cronulla I was absolutely thrilled at the turnout of local legends, including Terry Brown, whose brother, the late Bobby Brown, was my first surfing mentor. Then a couple of nights later in Avalon, at the opposite end of Sydney’s long and wave-rich coastal strip, Kirk Willcox, one of my successors as editor of Tracks a long time ago, hosted a great evening in front of a packed house that started with a roast from Thruster guru Simon Anderson and ended with a 1975 2SM morning surf report

reprised by Shane Stedman. In the middle of all of this, I managed to squeeze in a longish lunch with old publishing cronies Philip Mason and David Dale, the former my publisher at Tracks and Playboy, the latter my editor at The Bulletin. The scene for the debauch was a fabulous Turkish restaurant called Anason in Sydney’s new waterfront dining district, Barangaroo. Since Dale had just completed a book with the owner and chef, we just sat down in the spring sunlight and let food and wine absorb us. And it kept coming all afternoon! Thank God I don’t do serious lunching too often these days, but this was a rare gourmet treat.

NOOSA FESTIVAL OF SURFING AND SUPS Unfortunately there’s been a lot of misinformation in some sections of local media about the Laguna Real Estate Noosa Festival of Surfing decision to leave stand up paddle surfing off the program for 2018. Let me set the record straight. Over recent years SUPS has become dominated by paddle racing, an exciting sport that attracted many competitors and big crowds in 2017. But it is not surfing. The festival management took on board the sentiment expressed by many stakeholders that a derivative sport was taking over what has been, for 27 years, the world’s leading

celebration of surfing’s roots and spirit, and decided to either cut it loose to create its own festival, or find an entrepreneur who could develop it independently as a standalone event under the umbrella of the surf festival. The entrepreneur who put his hand up for that role entered into a development agreement with the festival with various milestones leading to a deadline for producing a business plan and proof of funding. The entrepreneur failed to deliver at any point and the deal was cancelled. Standard business practice. The entrepreneur is now presenting himself in the media as a disappointed competitor who has lost his accommodation deposit. This is misleading, to say the least. And, to correct more fake news from the same source, there will be dogs! The VetShop Australia Surfing Dog Championships will return in pride of place.

BRIDGE OF SIGHS

Publishing lunch at Anason.

The renaming of the Sound Bridge to the Garth Prowd Bridge was a timely and fitting tribute to a fine man, gone too soon. I’ve written about Garth in this space before, so let me just say here that when I heard the news from Tony Wellington last week, my first thought was that Garth would forever be remembered by the thousands upon thousands of entrants in the Noosa Triathlon each year as they set out on their

quests for glory, personal bests, or just the challenge of completing this iconic event. Garth gave them that opportunity, and he will never be forgotten. Nice one! For me, long past entertaining any such aspirations, I’ll remember him with a sigh every time I ride my old cruiser bike over the hump, heading for the beach, where he should be swimming, surfing, sipping coffee and happily getting old like the rest of us. ●

TOP GONG FOR JORDAN MERCER World champion paddleboarder and elite surf lifesaving competitor Jordan Mercer has been named USC’s Sportsperson of the Year for 2017. The talented endurance athlete and Education student received her trophy from USC’s Director of High Performance Sport Professor Brendan Burkett at last week's USC Sports Awards ceremony. Mercer, 23, of Marcus Beach, became the most decorated International Surfing Association competitor in history this year after earning her ninth and tenth individual world championship gold medals at the ISA World SUP and Paddleboard championships. As well as individual wins in the

Technical Paddleboard event in Hawaii and the 20km marathon paddleboard event in Denmark, Mercer was also part of the victorious Australian relay team in September. Mercer said after recovering from injury earlier this year, she jumped at the chance to take part in USC’s High Performance Student Athlete program. “I’m so thankful for the opportunity to be studying here and achieving my goals in sport,” she said. “It’s actually been a huge motivation to be surrounded by so many great athletes who have achieved so many incredible things across such a wide range of sports. “I’m really humbled - this is very special,” she said of receiving the award. ●

TEED UP FOR TRI The Noosa Triathlon Charity Golf Day is one of the favourite events of the five-day Noosa Triathlon Multi Sport Festival, bringing together golfers of all standards, celebrities and sporting elite. Among the guests at the Noosa Golf Club event were AFL superstar Scott Selwood and dual international Mat Rogers representing the football codes, while former butterfly World Champion and Olympian, Jessicah Schipper represented the swimmers. Noosa has been a tradition in the Selwood family for years, all except Scott, and this year the Geelong favourite was keen to rectify that anomaly. Swimming superstar Jessicah Schipper described the event as her favourite weekend of the year, having been involved in six or seven Noosa multisport festivals. “It definitely gives me the motivation to keep fit throughout the year and to come up and spend the weekend up here and be with the great Noosa family. It is a great

experience,” she said. Queensland legend Mat Rogers’ connection to Noosa goes back decades and he welcomes the opportunity to continue the tradition and introduce his favourite sporting destination to his own family. “I have been to Noosa probably 20 times plus. I love just being a part of an event that is so all encompassing and the whole week is a family affair. We all love it and it is our favourite week of the year.” Mat said the highlight was having his son Max, who is autistic, putting his hand up to do the Tingirana Special Tri with his sister. ●

BIG EFFORT NEEDED NEXT WEEK BY RANDALL WOODLEY TEWANTIN-NOOSA CRICKET First Grade: At stumps on day one of TNT’s match against Glasshouse Rangers finds the home team on 1/75 needing another 205 runs to take first innings points. Rangers won the toss and after being in trouble at 5/84 at lunch turned the tables and took control of the match in the afternoon. They scored another 195 for their last five wickets finishing late in the day on 279. If the TNT team is to pass Glasshouse Rangers’ score next Saturday, a tremendous batting effort will be required by the boys. Four of the team’s top batsmen will be away next Saturday with the Sunshine Coast Rep side playing in the Schaeffer Shield competition in Toowoomba. Their places will be taken by four second grade team members. Best of the local bowlers were Codey Rzeszkowski who bowled six maidens of leg spin in a row and finished his 30 overs with 2/79. Other wicket takers for TNT were Jarrod Officer 3/79 (22 overs), Rowdy Thomson 2/36, Stephen Shaw 2/44 and Robbie Payton 1/30. With nine overs of play left in the day some may be forgiven to assume TNT would try to get through to stumps without much excitement, but Steven Shaw had other ideas, scoring at a rapid rate to unfortunately to be dismissed 46 NOOSA TODAY

for 49 off 18 deliveries. Congratulations to local teenager, Darcy Morgan and TNT's English import, James Beesley, who both played their first matches yesterday in the top grade. Second Grade: Playing Glasshouse at their home ground, the TNT team fielded first and spent a long hot sun and humid afternoon chasing leather. Unfortunately, the Thunder’s fielding and catching was not up to par and the home side finished with 255. William Gear cleaned up the tail taking four wickets. When TNT batted, opener Alexander Bennett got a howler lbw first ball and

Caloundra started the innings with their big hitting opener, fresh from his century last innings, and he continued that form to punish anything short or loose straight to the boundary, finishing on 72 not out. At stumps Caloundra were 2/106. Justin Latimer easily the best of the bowlers taking 1/22 off 6 with Anstey taking the other wicket. The match is in the balance but TNT are confident they can win the contest. ●

captain Chris Wright was bowled for a quick-fire 30. At stumps the TNT boys were 2/45 with a big job ahead of them next week. Like the First Grade team this team will lose four players, including nightwatchman, Nick Bennett, all promoted to First Grade next Saturday. Fourth Grade: Batting first in the match against Caloundra at their high school oval, TNT lost two early wickets until Craig Moore and the welcome return of Luke Anstey put on a 96-run partnership to steady the ship. At tea, TNT were 5/166 off 39 with Craig Moore finishing on 78 and Anstey scoring

TRI EFFORT IS UNSURPASSED What can we say, congratulations to all those involved in the running of the 35th annual Noosa Triathlon. From the organisers, the stewards, right through to the volunteers - you did us proud. To top it off, attended by family members and friends, the unveiling of a plaque naming the Garth Prowd Memorial Bridge in memory of this great man, has indeed made this the 2017 Triathlon unsurpassable. As always our local surf lifesaving clubs Mudjimba, Coolum, Sunshine and Noosa were involved suppling patrol boats and experienced water safety personal for all swim events. The big one - the swim leg of the Triathlon - was held Sunday morning on Noosa's Main Beach. With the biggest entry ever, 8500 swimmers taking part, the role of the lifesavers was more important than ever. With swimmers going off according to their categories, the large number ensured that they would be stretched right across the bay. This only emphasises the important role of the duty lifesavers who manned the radio towers. All aspects of water safety were well covered. The conditions on the day were good. For this event said Noosa IRB Captain Chris Grandemange, we supplied the boats and rescue boards plus patrol members as observers in the radio towers. The other three clubs supplied the personal for board patrols and the whole event went over well. Summing up the swim, race director Joe Cirillo (veteran member of the Noosa Surf Club) said: “It was fantastic, a great success, probably the biggest Triathlon swim ever held, internationally or in Australia. The

Scott Summers, Kathryn Summers, Mel Pettigrove, Max Pettigrove. swim was held over the official Olympic Triathlon distance and only a small number of swimmers needed attention. Regarding the surf clubs, to see them all working together as one in service to the community, was very good indeed.” When we speak of annual events a second one occurred for the Noosa club immediately after the Triathlon. For the last four years the Noosa club has had

the privilege of playing host to a group of American students doing their gap year travel of the Fijian, New Zealand and Australia region. Known as the Rustic Pathways it is a team of 14 students, eight boys and six girls. Just graduated from high school in the 18/19 age group, they are sponsored by the parents. The main objective of the trip is to visit those countries, involve themselves in

community service, learn different life skills and also experience the adventure of foreign travel. Travelling under the supervision of program leader (International Guide) Amanda Dalsgaard from San Francisco, they will while in Noosa undergo the basic lifesaving bronze medallion training. “All the reports from the other teams who visited held Noosa in the very highest regard,” Amanda said. “I support this as I was a team member some years ago and really loved the place; beautiful and friendly. We spend five weeks in Australia and I think Noosa is their favorite stop. “On arriving back they will return to their home states and then enter university to commence their degrees.” We wish them a safe trip home. As some would say it is always good to keep the best news until last. On Saturday evening at the Sydney Art Gallery the Australian Surf Life Saving Association Awards of Excellence was held; and once again a club from the Sunshine Coast was prominent. Sunshine Beach Surf Life Saving Club was overjoyed when club captain Scott Summers was named Australian Surf Life Saver of the Year and his club mate and lifemember Max Pettigrove named, Lifeguard of the Year. To have two such prestigious awards come to the Sunshine Coast is indeed outstanding but to have both go to members of the same club is unbelievable. Well done to both men; your achievement is second to none. ●

ANGLERS HIT THE WATER UNDER THE FULL MOON With a perfect weekend, last weekend plenty of anglers hit the water. Heading offshore, there have been some reports of Mack tuna in the bay and the closer reefs. Casting small slugs and soft plastics and letting them sink through the schools has been the key, there has been the odd larger long tail holding underneath the school picking off the scraps. There has been a fair bit of currents due to the full moon so we expect to get some bigger pelagic fish around the pressure edges of the reefs. Jerk shad style soft plastics are one of the best for distance casting. For anglers that are working the bottom, snapper, grass sweetlip and gold spot cod all came from North Reef, while Sunshine Reef has been good for trout, sweetlip and squire. For those that headed wide there were good snapper, pearl perch and jew from the Hards and the Barwon Banks. On the river we have seen giant, golden and big eye trevally as well as tailor around the mouth, Woods Bays and Munna Point. Fishing the surface has been the way to go and fishing between first light and sunrise and sunset and last light has been the most productive. Best way to target them has been with smaller slugs or surface lures like poppers and surface walker. Make sure you up your leader as the tailor are very toothy and are noosatoday.com.au

snipping those light leaders. Whiting have been showing up in good numbers for the bait fisherman, fishing those run out tide with live or cured frozen worms has seen some good results. Mangrove jacks are out and about during the night, target them with slow trolled paddle tail plastics around 4-6” another great way to do battle is to use live baits or fresh strip baits on heavier gear. Fishing around structure is the key but you will find them on the flats at night as they come out to feed. Fishing the run out tide is very productive for flathead with the edges and drop off the most productive. Plastics

in prawn profile are dynamite as well as brighter fish profiles. For the bait anglers small pilchards on ganged hooks worked close to the bottom have also claimed some nice fish. On the beaches, plenty of four wheel drives were on the shore on the Noosa North Shore. We have seen plenty of dart from the closer gutters as well as quality whiting. If you are up for a night fish then there is still some good tailor about. Jewies are also around and love cursing the deeper gutters or behind the breakers looking for small bait fish. Fresh mullet, squid and tailor fillets are all top baits for a jewie. In the fresh, Lake Macdonald is producing bass around the bubble trail and edges of lily pads. Having a range of weedless plastics, spinnerbaits and vibes will be sure to keep your options open. For the surface angler looking to land a few, fishing first light has been the better option. For anglers headed to Lake Borumba in search of Saratoga, it really will be a case of getting started early to avoid the noise produced from recreational boats. Those fish that have been caught have been sitting lower down in the water so going a little heaver on the jig heads will help. So on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures! ●
