MORE TO LOVE The editor’s desk In talking to political watchers around the traps of late it is clear many locals are far from convinced the State election result in our own seat of Southern Downs is a done deal. On paper Southern Downs is the second-safest LNP seat in Queensland after Surfers Paradise, and the LNP and Lawrence Springborg held it with a 19.2 per cent margin after the 2015 election. But the long incumbency of ‘The Borg’ is now over with his impending retirement and even in a historically ‘safe’ seat, when a longserving member bows out things can sometimes get quite interesting. We have some strong candidates locally and those people who are not necessarily ‘rusted on’ LNP supporters may have a tough decision to make concerning who gets their vote on Saturday 25 November. Democracy may not be a perfect system of government but it’s the best one the human race has so far managed to devise and we’ll be seeing it in action in Southern Downs during this campaign, and in the final result. What is clear also is that at acrossthe-board State level neither of the major parties, LNP or ALP, is expected to command a working majority of seats in parliament. Good times for the political pundits among us. - Jeremy Sollars

THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT… TEEN ASSAULT VICTIM ARRIVES HOME

VANDALS STRIKE AT UNDERPASS

A new shelter shed for Swanfels Pioneer Memorial Park east of Warwick is due to be completed in the next fortnight, according to the Southern Downs Regional Council. The original shelter sheds in the park were demolished in January this year by the Southern Downs Regional Council which deemed them unsafe and an “eyesore”. The timber and iron-roofed sheds had formerly been a tennis shelter and a play shed at the old Swanfels State School and were moved to the district’s Pioneer Park in the early 1980s. Apprentices from All Trades Queensland (ATQ) have been engaged to construct the replacement shelter. Funding of $25,000 was set aside in the 2017/18 council budget for materials and All Trades Queensland is doing the work for free as a project for apprentices. The council’s Community Services and Major Projects manager Michael Bell told the Free Times this week that “dependent upon the weather, this project is underway and will take approximately two weeks to complete”. Locals had voiced concerns that the project appeared to have stalled and timber

Current and former local residents and former students of Swanfels State School were furious when the council razed the shelter sheds to the ground on Friday 20 January, less than 72 hours after announcing the sheds - which the council said were infested with termites - were to go. The park itself is hallowed ground in the Swanfels district, with plaques and trees commemorating early settlers and later families alike, and in some cases marking the site of their ashes, and is also popular with passing tourists such as ‘grey nomads’. After the demolition the council released a community survey asking residents if they want the sheds replaced, and if so with either a “simple structure” or “reconstruction of a structure similar to the previous building”. The overwhelming resolution of a public meeting in the park back in March was for council to construct a timber-and-iron structure as close as possible in size and design to the original sheds. The meeting was told a council report - of which the Free Times obtained a copy - made it clear that the termite damage to the sheds was not insurmountable, leaving many to

NEW SWANFELS 'SHED' IS TAKING SHAPE

A 15-year-old Warwick girl who was allegedly assaulted by two other teenage girls on a Warwick street in October has come home after rehabilitation in hospital and is making strong progress in recovery. The girl was allegedly repeatedly punched and kicked in the head in the early hours of Tuesday 10 October by two teenage females near the corner of Canning and Percy streets, while walking home from a party. She was flown about 9am on the Tuesday morning to Brisbane’s Princess Alexandra Hospital where she underwent emergency brain surgery before being placed in an induced coma. She came out of the coma a fortnight ago and underwent rehabilitation at the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital, and came home to Warwick late last week. The girl’s mother told the Free Times her daughter is “doing really well”. “She is glad to be home and we are all getting back to life,” her mother said. “And we are very thankful for all of the love and support we have received from the town.” A picnic will be held in Leslie Park, opposite the police station, from noon on Saturday 2 December to welcome the girl home. All are welcome to come along and bring a picnic and join in. ●

CAREY BROS

The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) says it will work on a “co-ordinated response” to vandalism of Warwick’s Billy Day Underpass with the police and the Southern Downs Regional Council. The Free Times was told this week of extensive damage to the lifts and balustrades at the underpass which runs under Wood Street near St Mary’s Catholic Church. The underpass was completed in May 2010 following a community campaign to improve road safety on Wood Street, particularly for students of the split-campus St Mary’s School. Glass around the lift structures at both the northern and southern ends of the bypass has been shattered by vandals and the northern end lift was not working at all when inspected by the Free Times on Monday. The balustrade above the underpass next to the northern end lift has also been completely shattered. A spokeswoman for TMR this week did not refer to the lift damage but

Football and coaching are a sustaining passion for Tim. Front page picture: Tim with some of the Academy players heading to Spain next year. Note the Tottenham Hotspur motif on Tim’s ‘sport leg’.

COACH HAS REAL IMPACT T

he evangelist Billy Graham famously said that a coach “will impact more young people in a year than the average person does in a lifetime”. For father of three and much-loved Warwick junior football coach Tim Gaske, that could well be an understatement - but Tim has been facing a test of his own in recent times that’s even more inspirational than everything he’s imparted out on the pitch. Back in August last year - after enduring 13 long years of ankle pain, consults with no less than 22 medical specialists and seven surgeries - Tim was told he had one of the world’s rarest of all cancers, detected purely by chance. One in three million people worldwide are diagnosed with synovial sarcoma, a form of tumour which mainly occurs in the extremities of the arms and legs and in Tim’s case, presented as an ongoing and painful inflammation in his right ankle which had many in the medical community baffled.

It wasn’t until Toowoomba orthopaedic surgeon Dr Anthony Wilson took a look at Tim’s ankle and found a ganglion cyst in the soft tissue and decided to have a sample taken for routine testing that the truth about what was causing Tim’s ongoing pain emerged. What followed was a visit to an orthopaedic cancer specialist in Brisbane - Tim wryly refers to him as ‘The Grim Reaper’ - who bluntly told Tim his “best-case scenario” was losing his leg, as opposed to his life, if amputation became the last resort. For Tim, that night was “the worst night of my life”, and it preceded more than two dozen bouts of radiation treatment in an attempt to destroy the tumour and save his leg. But the radiation didn’t work. Tests were carried out to determine if the cancer had spread to other parts of Tim’s body and when another small amount was found in his ankle area it became a case, to use

Tim’s words, of “going from limb-sparing to life-saving” surgery - the amputation of his right leg below the knee, at Brisbane’s Mater Hospital. “At that stage I accepted it, I basically said, ‘OK, let’s do it,” he says. “When I came out of surgery my leg was gone, but I knew that the cancer was gone as well, and that was the relief. “I’d seen so many doctors, so many specialists for years and none of them were able to help me. “I had surgeries - I had stabilisation and screws put in, but the pain was always there. “I flew to Sydney and saw the top ankle specialist in Australia - he didn’t even take a look at me, he just read the reports and said, ‘No, sorry, nothing I can do for you’. “If I hadn’t finally gone to see Dr Wilson in Toowoomba, I wouldn’t be here now. “I can’t win Lotto - but I could get synovial sarcoma.”

This simple plate modification allows Tim to drive.

Tim and Rachel Gaske.

Not only did Tim have to go through the amputation itself, he then faced brutal, relentless chemotherapy treatments during trips to the Wesley Hospital in Brisbane, to ensure the cancer did not return. “It was five days on, 16 days off, over five separate treatments - 12 hours a day at the Wesley,” he said. “I handled the first three rounds pretty well, but by the fourth one I started going downhill. “I was mentally and physically sick - my body was just drained. “I thought I’d beaten cancer and was going to die from chemo. “The last day of chemo was 17 December last year.” After such an ordeal, the great news is that as recently as Monday of last week Tim was given yet another all-clear, during a three-monthly check-up regimen where he was told he’s “as fit as anyone can be”. After his surgery Tim was fitted with a temporary prosthetic leg to get him mobile, before taking delivery of two customised prosthetic legs - ‘walking’ and ‘sport’ versions. He’s one of only four Australian amputees to utilise the latest in prosthetic leg technology, with the ‘walking’ leg able to be controlled via a phone app and adjusting automatically to inclines and other level changes. Running is still a future goal - part of the ‘pushing of boundaries’ that all amputees go through - but as well as general getting around for the time-being Tim is happy to be able to drive the family car, which has a simple modification to enable left-foot acceleration and braking. He’s working back at Australia Post - who he says have been “so supportive” - and is about to transition to full-time once more, and while riding a postie bike is now out he’s doing “everything else I used to do at work” and he’s hoping to be a part of new delivery technology - still a bit of a secret - coming soon to Australia Post. And football, one of his life’s greatest loves - along with Rachel and their children Macy, 11, Hayden, 10 and Chloe, 9 - is ever-present. While he believes his cancer may have been the result of a youthful football injury - sarcomas can be caused by ongoing inflammation from a physical mishap - his devotion to the game remains endless. As its coaching director, Tim has been instrumental

in the development of the Warwick Wolves Development Academy, an offshoot of the club which nurtures those junior players who have a particular passion for and commitment to improving their game. This year, in a first for the Wolves, some of the academy players will take on teams in the Toowoomba junior competition and next year a group of these players and their families and coaches will travel to Spain for exposure to top Spanish coaches, junior oppositions and Spanish culture in general. He finds coaching deeply rewarding and says while he “might not be able to play a game I can stand on the sideline and yell”. But for Tim, the most important thing is that he’s “still here”. He went to a clinic for amputees at the coast a couple of weekends ago and had his first dip in the ocean since his diagnosis - on his waterproof ‘sport’ leg - and says the experience gave him some perspective and made him realise that others “can be worse off than you are”. “You’ve just got to keep yourself going mentally - after an amputation there’s two ways you can go,” he said. “There’s hard times, when you wish you still had your leg, but I get up in the morning, I put my leg on and I just go for it,” he says. “I’m still the same person, and I probably walk better than a lot of other people I see around. “All you think of is your family, your kids, and being here for them. “It’s been tough on Rachel and the kids but they have been amazingly supportive and there for me. “I got a second chance - that’s more than a lot of people with cancer get.” Tim particularly wants to thank the local individuals and community groups who have supported both him and his family financially and emotionally, including the Stanthorpe Rotary Club - Tim is originally a Stanthorpe boy - and others like the Tannymorel Bowls Club and, naturally, the mighty Warwick Wolves. “I truly believe that if Rachel and I didn’t live here, hadn’t grown up here, we wouldn’t have had anything like the kind of support we’ve had,” Tim said. “You only get that from living in communities like ours, that’s what we’ve learned through all of this.” ●

The Warwick Wolves Development Academy is looking for a major sponsor for a trip to Spain in 2018.

SPONSOR NEEDED The Warwick Wolves Development Academy is looking for a major sponsor for its trip to Spain in October 2018. Tim Gaske describes the trip as a “once in a lifetime experience”. “Many of our kids don’t have or get the opportunity to travel and if we can encourage more to attend in turn it might boost numbers in our club and academy,” he said. “The tour also includes coaching insights so as to learn from professionals - this will then be passed on to all kids training under these coaches.” As well as looking for a major sponsor, local businesses and individuals are encouraged to make a tax deductible donation to the Spain trip, through the Australian Sports Foundation. Visit asf.org.au/projects/wolves-footballdevelopment-academy Potential major sponsors are welcome to contact Tim Gaske on 0434 211 441. ●

There’s just 16 more sleeps to go until the Queensland election on Saturday 25 November. Here in our own seat of Southern Downs for the first time in - well, forever - we have quite an interesting contest on our hands, thanks to long-time LNP MP Lawrence Springborg retiring from state politics. While ‘The Borg’ held the seat with an effectively bullet-proof margin of 19.2 per cent - the second-safest LNP seat in Queensland after Surfers Paradise at the 2015 election - history demonstrates that even in a ‘safe’ seat like ours when a longtime incumbent member quits, the race can open right up for all comers. Replacing Lawrence Springborg in the LNP candidate corner is former RAAF officer James Lister, who will match-up against current Goondiwindi councillor, businessman and former LNP stalwart Rob Mackenzie, who is running as an Independent after being unsuccessful in gaining the LNP endorsement for Southern Downs. Also in the mix is Texas-based Josh Coyne for One Nation and The Greens’ Toowoomba-based candidate Antonia van Geuns. The ALP was yet to name its candidate for Southern Downs at the time of printing of the Southern Free Times this week. Rather than treat our readers to longwinded political analysis at this point - there’ll be time for that later - the Free Times decided to put a series of 10 simple questions to each of our candidates to help our readers get to know them. Here are their unedited responses to our ‘Candidate Q&A’, in name alphabetical order ... ●

NEWS Day when I am proud to march with the other military veterans. Who’s your greatest political inspiration and why? That’s easy - Sir Joh Bjelkie-Petersen! Everyone knew what he stood for, but he wasn’t just talk and bluster - he was smart, governed well, and played to our strengths. When I was in the Young Nationals as a teenager I made a pilgrimage to see him and Lady Flo in Kingaroy. What do you do to relax? There’s not much time for relaxation any more, but I just love spending time with Belinda and our boys - I miss them when I am on the road and around this huge electorate. We often go to the park to ride the kids’ scooters or go to my parents’ place for a ride on the tractor and to feed the cows.

Independent Rob Mackenzie Rob Mackenzie - Independent What’s your full name? Robert John Mackenzie. Where and when were you born, and where do you live now? Goondiwindi, and ... Goondiwindi. Tell us about your family - ie partner/

children etc? Married to Stacey, she owns and runs a hair salon in Goondiwindi. Three children Jackson, Brodie (only girl) and Logan. What was your first job? Stock camps up in the Gulf, had my 17th birthday up there. What’s your current job? AAHH husband /father (they are the tough ones) owner/operator of a home brew business, owner/operator of a security business employing many locals and thirdterm elected member of local government in Goondiwindi/Waggamba. First car? 1973 two-door Falcon coupe. What’s the best thing about the Southern Downs electorate? The diversity and potential of this region and the people who believe in it. What’s your favourite time of the year in our region? Oh that’s tough - country shows and cotton picking in the autumn, winter and all the “cold” festivities in the east and planting time, harvest, race meetings and swimming in the spring and summer ... how about January to December. Who’s your greatest political inspiration and why? Sir Robert Menzies - his ability to listen, compromise and bring the people together from differing political backgrounds and make a successful, operational government ... something some of our present-day leaders could learn from. What do you do to relax? Sitting on the verandah with family and friends with a cold one and '70s/'80s music playing in the background.

Antonia van Geuns 173554 Antonia van Geuns - The Greens What’s your full name? Antonia van Geuns. Where and when were you born, and where do you live now? Born in Kingaroy; now live in Toowoomba. Tell us about your family - ie partner/ children etc? Peter and I have three children. What was your first job? My main occupation was secondary school, teaching science. What’s your current job? I am no longer in paid employment. First car? VW Beetle. What’s the best thing about the Southern Downs electorate? Lots of things but I’ll say the environment. What’s your favourite time of the year in our region? All seasons; probably autumn and spring. What do you do to relax? Go to quiet spaces.

ambulance paramedic in Stanthorpe. She’s having a baby in January. We’re lucky to have family to help babysit while I am away around the electorate. What was your first job? Technically my first job was helping the milko on his milk run when I was 11. For two hours' work I was paid $2 and also had my choice of a 250ml flavoured milk or a strawberry yoghurt. My first real job was at the Wheat Research Station in Narrabri. I helped out in the greenhouses, drove headers and did general farm work around the trial plots and seed increase crops in Narrabri, Moree, Gilgandra, Pallamallawa, Croppa Creek and North Star. It was hard work but great fun. What’s your current job? For the last five and a half months, seven days a week, I’ve been the LNP candidate for Southern Downs. My discharge from the Air Force officially takes effect in October, but I have already hung my military uniform for the last time. First car? A beaten-up old 1973 Volvo 164E. What’s the best thing about the Southern Downs electorate? It’s very hard to narrow this down, but I think it’s the people. Everyone is happy to have a yarn and share their story and concerns. It’s great for political candidates because it makes it easier to understand what people want from me and how to be a faithful representative. What’s your favourite time of the year in our region? I love autumn here in Stanthorpe - the trees blush pink, then red, and then finally go a deep rusty brown. The kids and I play in the leaves together. It’s also the time of Anzac

Stanthorpe Regional Art Gallery presents ‘Separate Realities’ - Denis Brockie ‘Retrospective’ and ‘Response to Nature’, Maggie Brockie - exhibition from 12 October to 26 November. Michael Pospisil, Southern Downs artist said: “It is a great exhibition. Seeing them en masse it is quite powerful". Denis Brockie spoke on abstraction in art. “For me, abstraction begins and ends with paint on canvas. Much of the intrigue is to do with the physical nature or 'presence’ of the material. “Without subject, topic or literal reference, abstracts arise from the realms of disorder, the unconscious and unutterable. “In fact, language itself can be as much a barrier as an entree to abstraction which can

Twenty seven young artists received Excellence or Encouragement awards presented to them by Lewis von Stieglitz, representing sponsor Warwick Credit Union, and Warwick Art Gallery director Karina Devine. Ms Devine was thrilled with the entries received and the talent that the exhibition is able to showcase. “It was such a pleasure receiving each and every entry,” Ms Devine said. “Our young artists were so proud of their entries. This really highlights the value of creative activity to foster self confidence. The young artists are exploring a whole range of media too, including traditional painting and drawing to graphic cartoons, photography, artists books and 3D printing." Among the award winners was sevenyear-old Ella Winfield, who received an encouragement award for her photograph “Lizard on the Tree”. Ella’s mother Sara Winfield told the gallery that Ella was excited to be a part of the exhibition. “For Ella to win an encouragement award it is going to grow and develop her interested in art and photography,” Ms Winfield said. “We are very grateful for the opportunity.” Here is the complete list of all the winners: Excellence Awards Annabel Cory, Under the Sea. Alice Fowles, Breathe. Morgan Gander, Elton John. Amali Millard, Decaying Staircase. Brianna Paradas, Withering Lea. Nuala Pierce, Mrs Potts and Chip. Jacqueline Richmond-Clay, Contemplation. offer us a moment, however brief - to step off the tram-car that is our life. “The method used on most of my abstracts involves a large dollop of the unanticipated, inherent in a fluid medium. This can produce passages of more life and spontaneity than preconceived or deliberate attempts. “Gradually the work becomes an accumulation of layers of small incidents - of visual interest - which must be coaxed into a cohesive whole without being suffocated. “This is the fine line, seeking a balance between the power of chaos and the restraint of imposing an underlying sense of order. “The purpose of the exercise is to concentrate an unruly mind and produce an object for contemplation and maybe delight.” The Stanthorpe Regional Art Gallery is celebrating the 30th anniversary in its current space showcasing the largest regional art collection, from 30 November to 21 January. ●

JOB EXPO CALL Southern Downs Regional Council is encouraging employers in the region to register their interest in exhibiting at the upcoming Southern Downs Job Expo on Tuesday 28 November, from 4pm to 8pm. Held at the Warwick RSL, the Southern Downs Job Expo will provide employers the opportunity to personally connect with job seekers, students, career changers and those returning to work. Southern Downs Regional Council

mayor Tracy Dobie said the expo came at an opportune time, with the region expecting over 1000 new jobs in the next three years. “These jobs will be across a number of industries including retail, aged care, food processing, transport and agriculture. “We are committed to helping our local businesses thrive, and a huge part of that in the coming years is ensuring our growing businesses have access to the employees they need,” Cr Dobie said. “The expo provides the perfect opportunity for businesses to meet face to face with potential employees, and to be on the lookout for new talent.” Local businesses wishing to take a stand at the expo need to register with the council’s economic development and tourism unit by 21 November via events@sdrc.qld.gov.au or phone (07) 4661 0455. ●

PROJECTS IN THE MONEY Innovative and creative projects within the Southern Downs region will come alive as part of the Regional Arts Development Fund, known as RADF. RADF is a partnership between the Queensland Government and the Southern Downs Regional Council

to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland. The council was successful in receiving $55,000 of funding from the State, which will be combined with a council contribution of $50,000 to provide a total funding pool of $105,000 for this financial year’s RADF program. Throughout previous years the council’s RADF grants have included exciting and diverse projects such as street art, workshops in pottery and fine furniture making, development of a heritage mapping concept, and participation of professional cultural artists and entertainers at festivals. The council’s first RADF round opened for applications last Monday 6 November and the closing date is midnight on Friday 8 December. Projects for which RADF grant funds are sought must not start before 29 January next year. This year applications will need to be made online via SmartyGrants. The link to the RADF application form and program guidelines is available on the council website at www.sdrc.qld.gov.au/doing-business/ grants-to-community. For further information contact the council’s RADF liaison officer Zoe Dunlop on 1300 MY SDRC (1300 697 372). ●

CALL FOR FAIR DEAL Doctors are calling for the next State Government to deliver a fairer deal for patients and medical professionals in Queensland’s regional areas. AMA Queensland wants all political parties to commit to appointing an Assistant Health Minister specifically to address the health needs of regional and remote areas if they win office. The AMA says there are just 91 doctors working in remote areas of Queensland and each serves almost twice as many patients as their counterparts in Brisbane and most rural, remote and regional area doctors say it takes six to 12 months to fill new vacancies in their health and hospital services, according to an AMA Queensland survey. AMA Queensland president Dr Bill Boyd said regional and rural patients deserved better. “The voices of regional doctors and their patients are not being heard in the corridors of power - and that has to change,” Dr Boyd said. “Appointing an Assistant Health Minister dedicated to regional health should give those areas a powerful champion in government and start to deliver the funding and policies that are needed.” ●

EMPLO Y Youth W MENT o contac rkers in t wit busine h local sses to create emplo opportu yment nities

The Reserve Bank of Australia last week announced that 'blockchain', the technology behind cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin, has “potential for widespread use in the financial sector and many other parts of the economy” triggering speculation that this could include buying and selling houses. Real estate has been, until now, steeped in tradition, tied to paper-andpen technology and archaic rules, and it would be fair to say that it has been slow to change. However, that’s all in the past, so to speak, as the sector embraces digital technology for a range of functions that are bringing the profession closer to faster, frictionless transactions. Recent innovations include electronic conveyancing through PEXA and completing sales contracts with digital signatures on online contracts. So, are we on the verge of going truly techno, with the buying and selling of property using bitcoin? Well, a Brisbane agent recently said they were preparing to become bitcoin-friendly, a process likely to take more than a year, and a Sydney agency dabbled with the idea a few years ago. However, the ATO and the NSW Office of Fair Trading reportedly had some issues

with it and that Sydney agency abandoned those plans, according to a trade media report. To the best of our knowledge there have been no bitcoin transactions in residential real estate in Australia, yet. A tech entrepreneur in the UK put his house on the market in October for AUD$2.1 million, requiring payment in bitcoin. At the time of writing the property had not yet sold, although it was claimed there was interest. ANZ and Westpac announced they had partnered with IBM to use blockchain, instead of paper, for bank guarantees on commercial property lease deal earlier this year. So, is it possible that the first sale or first rental payment is just around the corner? Sure, anything’s possible. But it’s unlikely that the first residential property purchase in bitcoin is going to happen soon. The ATO and Fair Trading have expressed concerns about bitcoin transactions for residential property. So, for the moment, this is an area where consumer demand for faster, smoother transactions is colliding with regulatory framework. At this stage only time will tell how this shakes out. ●

for a dishwasher, preparing meals would be easy in this functional kitchen. The living room has a wood fire and ceiling fan to keep you cosy and cool all year round. BEATRICE HAWKINS

JOY IN THE OLD JACARANDAS The weekend before last I drove to the Gold Coast and took an unintended detour from Beaudesert out through some beautiful farming country. I am glad I took the scenic route as it is country I would never have seen otherwise. It is good sometimes to get of the beaten track even if it is by mistake! Only small farms but really well kept and productive country that I guess in times past has sustained many dairy farms. Beautiful old Queeenslander homes with huge, spectacular old jacaranda trees in full bloom in the paddocks and house yards. As it was a drizzly day the gorgeous colour of the trees really stood out against the grey sky. I love clear blue skies and the wonderful light we have here in this country on sunny days, but a grey day is really good to showcase certain colours and jacaranda blue/mauve is one of those. They really looked quite wonderful against the vivid green of the grazing paddocks and the chocolate brown of the fallowed country and somehow are just the perfect accompaniment to the Queenslander style of architecture. Jacaranda trees in full bloom combined with the perfume of rock-lilies in flower have a very special place in my childhood memories. I have had great reviews from some people who took the opportunity and time to take a drive and look at some of the winning gardens from the competition. We

certainly have some talented gardeners in this area and I hope next year we have even more entries in the competition. The next item on the Warwick Horticultural Society agenda will be our Christmas get together and then in March 2018 our Autumn Flower Show and a bus trip to the Garden Expo at Doomben ... how the time races by. I was reminded by a friend recently of a gardening practice that I had not thought of for a long time. When I was a small child it was very common and a good source of nutrients for plants. These days with so many liquid fertilisers on the market convenience generally wins out. In those days it was a 44 gallon drum that was used but now a plastic garbage bin with a lid would be ideal. My friend remembered his uncle having ready access

to sheep manure and making a brew with sheep manure and water. Where I grew up cow manure was readily available and used instead. Also back before the commercial seaweed products came on the market, as we lived close to a lake, I remember Dad getting a trailer load of seaweed for mum. Never before or since have I seen or tasted such wonderful strawberries as were grown that year. Unfortunately I am a little far from a source here in Warwick and these days it is also probably against the law to collect it. The extra storm rain we had in Warwick early on Monday morning the week before last was very welcome and has given my lawn a boost. I love a kikuyu lawn and a friend mowed mine for me the Friday before the rain. ●

Take about a third of a bucket of old sheep or cow manure, about the same amount of compost plus a couple of good handfuls of poultry manure pellets. Put this in a 55 litre garbage bin, fill with water and put the lid on. Let it brew for about two weeks and it will be a strong tea coloured solution. Almost fill a 10-litre bucket with this it and add about a tablespoon of fish emulsion, a small amount of liquid potassium and the same amount of seaweed concentrate. This brew will be too strong to be used undiluted so put about two litres in a 10-litre watering can and top up with water. The ratio should be about one part liquid manure to five parts water. Another recipe I found was to use all kitchen vegetable scraps and even egg shells, pureed in a blender with a little water until a smooth consistency. For every blender full poured into a bucket add half a teaspoon of Epsom salts (magnesium sulphate). Stir it up and let it sit overnight. Dilute it at the rate of 1 to 5 with warm water and mix well. Water it around the base of your plants. This recipe uses up your scraps and is much quicker than composting them. Home made liquid fertiliser is easy, environmentally friendly, cheap and a terrific way to boost fertility in your garden. Worth a try. ●

THE SPIN

STAND UP FOR LOCAL LEAGUES If local communities want to see rugby played in their towns then it is time for supporters to get behind clubs and put up their hands to help out. It is AGM time for the four BRL clubs and to date things are not looking good. Killarney have had two shots at their AGM and each time failed to get a quorum and with 2017 president Aaron McKinney not seeking re-election the club is rudderless and in real trouble. James Kelly a former president and vice-president is calling on supporters to get behind the popular Killarney. Kelly is prepared to again take on a committee role but cannot do it without help. However, this problem is not unique to Killarney. The Gremlins are also having trouble attracting a quorum and have also had a couple of attempts at holding their AGM. David Ball the 2017 president is another not seeking re-election and the club is struggling to find people to support and carry on the traditions and work of the club. It is believed that Inglewood also face similar issues while Tenterfield will be in trouble if their core supporters ever decide to walk away. Seems like everyone loves to see footy played in their town, but don’t want to put their hands up to do the hard yards. While it might seem like a tough gig - and make no mistake, running football clubs or any sporting club can be a recipe for some heartache - it can be extremely rewarding. It is time for some new faces to take on the challenge of keeping rugby league in our district afloat. BRL chairman Norman Crisp says that if just one of the four teams fail to form the BRL cannot sustain a competition. Each of the clubs has excellent facilities these days and while attracting players always seems to be a problem early in the season, attracting volunteers to run the clubs is looming as a far greater issue. If you have a passion for local rugby league, don’t leave the job for the bloke next door or down the road. Put up your hand and get involved. Clubs don’t run themselves. Contact Norman Crisp for contact details of the BRL clubs. - Casey FLYING THE WORLD CUP FLAG The Rugby League World Cup rolls on with no real surprises other than a few Scotsmen

Captain of the Stanthorpe Golf Club with a representative of one of the major sponsors of last week's Stanthorpe Golf Open Danny Carroll of City Golf Club.

Australian Coach Darren Lehmann may be on the verge of welcoming son Jake into the Aussie Cricket Squad on the back of some great recent batting performances.

being sent home for over imbibing - the fact that one of them was the captain will not help their cause in coming games. The Tongan and Samoan sides have added colour and spark to the competition and their pre-game rituals are enough to make the hair stand up on the back of your neck. PNG are also proving to be great entertainers. Interesting that Jarryd Hayne has surpassed Billy Slater and Bob Fulton - a couple of superstars of the game - on the try scoring front. While no-one doubts Hayne has ability, his commitment to the game hardly stacks up against Slater and Fulton. Not that commitment or loyalty mean a great deal any longer. The announcement this week that Penrith captain Matt Moylan is flying the coop and heading to Cronulla confirms the stories that circulated like Sharks in a feeding frenzy towards the end of last season. It also appears the ink is set to dry on a deal that will see the Hayne plane making a landing back in the Eels pond after creating havoc at the Titans. If the rumour mill is to be believed Neil Henry must be left with a very sour taste in his mouth while a number of Titans officials left with a large serving of egg on their faces. In the meantime we have a few weeks of the World Cup to go before the finals. We are yet to see any major upsets - perhaps there is still a sting in the tail of some of the minnows of the game. Meanwhile Sydney air traffic controllers have been alerted to keep an eye out for the landing of the Hayne plane. BOOF AND JNR All parents love to see their kids succeed in their chosen field, be it sport or a career, and sometimes they are one in the same. But for Australian cricket coach Darren Lehman

the success of his son Jake in recent Shield games in the lead-up to the Ashes is both thrilling and a bit of a headache. Lehman Jnr has surged into Test calculations for the much-sought-after number six spot after scoring 93 to go with his MCG first innings ton. At a time when Australian cricket has been searching for a batsman to shine, this young bloke looks like someone turned on a neon sign. Fortunately and correctly so, Lehman will not be called on to pass judgement on his son’s selection or otherwise. Cricket Australia has ratified a rule that Lehmann Snr would be forced to excuse himself from the selection table due to the potential conflict of interest. Lehmann Snr has made it abundantly clear in the past when and if ever his son’s name came up in selection conversation he would not want to be part of thee conversation, and if Jake ever made it he’d be so nervous he’d abandon his coaching post and go straight to the bar. Jokes aside, the prospect of Lehmann playing Test cricket has grown from a throwaway line to a serious proposition. The position for a number six batsman and the keeper’s spots are certainly up for grabs and on the back of recent performances we might see a Baby Boof in the middle and Coach Boof at a bar somewhere in the bowels of the Gabba. One thing for certain it is great to see the return to an old fashioned cricket shoot out during pre-Test Shield games to decided shaky Test spots. BACK ON COURT Stanthorpe Mallet players returned to the court last week after a break of several weeks while the court was out of action.

The Association Croquet group were the first to try out the court after the maintenance work. Pat Schnoor partnered newcomer Peter Tunbridge in a game against Jenny Tunbridge. Effey Russell and Val Shepherd played Joy Newman and Val Richardson. Newman played very well in the second half setting up a 24-19 win for she and her partner. Margaret Dickenson and Grace Howard teamed taking on Andrea Denkewitz in a close fought game in which Andrea eventually secured a 16-14 victory. The Gateball players were also keen to get back on track on Friday. Andrea Denkewitz, Joy Newman, Bill Golding and Grace Howard formed Team One to play Margaret Dickenson, Jenny Tunbridge, Les Williams and Val Fancourt, Team Two, with three of the four games decided. In the first game Les Williams and Joy Newman both played well as Team One opened the day with a 12-9 win. It was to be their only victory. The second game went the way of their opponents. Once again it was Les Williams making the good shots as Team Two secured a 14-9 win. After the break, the teams were reduced to three a side. Both of the final games were close affairs but with some excellent play from both Margaret Dickenson and Jenny Tunbridge Team Two secured wins. The final scores in these games 11-9 and 13-9. SPORTERS COME OUT TO PLAY Sporters were out on the course in good numbers last Sunday after a week off due to the Stanthorpe Golf Club Open. Matt Waterworth continued his good form to pick up a Sunday win ahead of runner-up Ian Anderson. Waterworth added the best gross and the pro pin to his tally. John Walsh and Paul Armstrong both figured in the rundowns while Aaron Simmers picked up the pin shot on the third with a nice shot. Owen McPaul and Mark Lynam each went home with a meat tray tucked under their wing. A reminder to all Sporters that as of Sunday tee off will revert to the earlier time of 7.30am-8am in line with the onset of the warmer weather (probably a cue for another cold snap). As we hurtle through November it is time to start thinking about Christmas parties (uuugh) and Sporters are reminded that 10 December is the Sporters Christmas party. So mark your diaries and keep the day free for a liquid and barbecue brekkie, game of golf and barbecue lunch. Organisers will be chasing you shortly for numbers.

bowlers taking 3/32 while Weyland Aldridge chimed in with 2/29. In reply it was Mitch Drayton who was the back bone of thee Wanderers innings with a score of 68 and although the Wanderers tail wagged a little late in the game the loss of early wickets proved costly. In a good sign for the future of Stanthorpe cricket, the best performances so far this season have come from players who are under 20 with quite a few still under 15. At the conclusion of the first round Souths sit at the top of the table followed by RSL, Valleys, Tenterfield and Wanderers. MAX DOING THE HUNTING A good field set out to contest the single stableford competition at the Stanthorpe Golf Club last weekend. The game was sponsored by popular local golfer Max Hunter and he certainly rose to the occasion. Max was far from the hunted, he returned the best score of the day (43 points) and collected the balls for the pin shot at 17 and the pro-pin at 1/10. When Keith Jones, Kev Rowlings and Keith Allen all returned scores of 42 points, a countback was required to sort out the runners-up. Keith Jones got the nod as first runner-up. Kev Rowlings secured second runner-up and Keith Allen was left to settle for a ball in the rundowns. Aaron Simmers carded a birdie at three and not surprisingly won the pin shot at that hole. Matt Waterworth picked up the pin shot at 12 and also held the pro-pin at 5/14. Luke Reardon rarely misses out on taking balls away and collected the pro-pin at 9/18 and the birdies nest at the second. Ian Pickering had a round finishing with a score of 41 to feature in the run down. A countback was required to determine the ladies' winner with Nikki Waterworth and Neta Thouard back in the clubhouse with a score of 37 points. Nikki Waterworth was declared the winner while Neta Thouard took the runner-up prize. Racheal Hendry didn’t have her bet round but managed to win the ladies’ pin at three. There were no takers for

wicket amassed a huge total of 308 losing only six wickets along the way. Two of the Redbacks' batsmen scored half centuries. Coen Slatter (57) and Kerin Politch (55) took to the bowling attack. Redbacks captain Tyhe Clarkson was also hitting the ball sweetly as he scored a slashing 44. Dave Drewery showed all of his experience posting a score of 45. Chasing such a big score always looked a bridge too far for Sovereign Animals and they were all out for 131. Tony Munro (28) and captain Cahal Davis ( 27) were the best of the batsmen. Redbacks bowlers Morgan Gilchrist and Jimmy Underwood both claimed two wickets in their bowling spells but it was the performance of the batsmen that secured a big win for the team. Warwick Hotel Colts and Railway Hotel Rascals also played on Saturday in Allora. In a low scoring game Rascals had Colts dismissed for just 92 and looked in with a good chance of getting the points in the game. Jacob Gross scored a half-century but his 54 was not enough as wickets tumbled under the Rascals bowling attack. Jake Christensen had thee batsmen in a spin finishing with impressive figures taking five wickets for 24 while the medium pace of Joe Morris yielded four wickets for 25 runs. The game was certainly there to be won by Rascals but they capitulated to be all out for 72. Paul Christensen the only batsman to show resistance scored 29. Jacob Gross was the major destroyer for Colts. He followed up a good performance with the bat to take 3/15 from seven overs. ●

the pin at 12 but a good shot at 17 from the eventual winner Nikki Waterworth gave her the ladies' approach shot. There is only one more round to complete the 2017 ’Golfer of the Year’ event; the monthly medal to be played in two weeks. Leading scores in this year-long competition are quite close and the final positions can be influenced by how well some members play in this last single competition. Winners in both the men’s and ladies sections will be announced at the club’s Christmas party and awards night which will be held following play on Saturday 25 November. A number of senior Stanthorpe players (Vets) are playing in the Darling Downs Vets mixed foursomes championships at City Golf Club next Monday. Good luck to those players and hopefully we will see some familiar names figuring in the results. On Saturday the Pierce family is sponsoring the Peirce Trophy, a mixed 4BBB Stableford event. The club is hoping to see plenty of mixed teams registering for the event. For those players not paired in the mixed event, a 4BBB stableford will be played. There is a timesheet for the event on the board with tee off from 11.30am. MARYVALE, REDBACKS AND COLTS WINNERS Round four of the Warwick cricket season saw some big wins and an unfortunate forfeit. The game between Redbacks and Sovereign Animals was moved from Queens Park to Slade Oval after Inglewood forfeited to Wheatvale. Redbacks took full advantage of the move to the turf wicket and with first use of the

SOUTHS TAKE AN EARLY LEAD At the end of round one of the Stanthorpe cricket season, Souths look to be the in-form team and scored another comprehensive victory on Saturday. Three games were decided last weekend with a catch-up game between Wanderers and RSL played on Friday night under lights at C.F. White Oval. Wanderers had first use of the wicket but could only manage 98 runs before they were dismissed in the 34th over. RSL took the opportunity to use several bowlers. Anthony Di Bella continued his good form with the ball and after a stellar performance last weekend claimed another three wickets. Will Dowie also caused the batsmen plenty of headaches and claimed three wickets also. Chasing the small target never looked an issue for RSL who lost only one wickets on their way to a comprehensive win. Jason Lawer (30) and Spencer Jensen (28) guided RSL home in just the 19th over. On Saturday South’s played Valleys on Sheehan Oval while Wanderers played Tenterfield on the C.F. White Turf. On paper there did not look to be much between Souths and Valleys. Both sides have been showing good early form this season. It was Souths who grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck from the outset and thrashed Valleys by 168 runs. Captain Ben Staley (76 retired) and Jordan Lanza (81) set up the win with a blazing innings. At the end of the 40 overs Souths had set their opponents a formidable 241 run target as their batsmen took apart the normally tight Valley’s bowling attack. Souths lost only four wickets in the innings. The Valley’s bowling figures were not pretty and the addition of 31 wides was not helpful. There were no highlights on the Valley’s batting card either. It was a forgettable performance all round for the Valley’s players as they were dismissed for just 73 runs. Youngster Alex Cameron dismantled the Valley’s line-up taking five wickets for just 11 runs. His performance just one of the highlights of a great win for Souths. Wanderers were hopeful of securing their first win of the season when they met Tenterfield on the C.F. White Oval but they will have to wait for that elusive win after a solid performance from Tenterfield who scampered home by 15 runs to grab the points. Wanderers had Tenterfield dismissed for 163 runs in the 29th over and gave themselves a real shot at a win. Four Tenterfield players (Merchant, Koch, Murphy and Swan) managed scores better than 20 but all failed to go on to bigger things. Brock Patti was the pick of the Wanderers
