Escape to the stage

A cult Hollywood rom-com is set to make its Australian stage premiere in Hallam. Never Been Kissed - a 1999 film made famous by Drew Barrymore’s star turn - has been adapted by Hallam-based The Escapees Theatre Company. Company director Amy Planner said the film was on her very long list of favourites. “I thought it would be really fun. “The characters are outrageous all the while having a little bit of drama that we could really grab on to.” There were a few hurdles adapting the film to the theatre - not least for the cast to master a “Chicago-esque” accent. “We put it out there that we wanted the cast to try them and we would see how we went,” Ms Planner said. “Everyone has truly surprised me.” The company also delved garages, yard sales, op shops and “those junk drawers” to find 1990s phones, computers and fashions. Never Been Kissed is at Hallam Senior College theatre on 15-18 November. Bookings at escapeestc.com.
Third time lucky? By Cam Lucadou-Wells and Brendan Rees Casey councillor Geoff Ablett has put his hand up for his third term as mayor, with a plan to revegetate some of Casey’s lost remnant ecology. Cr Ablett was expecting to nominate for the election at a council meeting at Bunjil Place on 13 November. He thought two other councillors may rival him for the job. “I’m not sure where it all sits at the moment but I’ll be putting my hand up. “If it’s me, good. But if it’s someone else I’ll be the first person to shake their hand and say well done. “I’ll support them 100 per cent.”
If successful, Cr Ablett would pursue many of the big-ticket items of the council, such as the Smart City push, more local jobs and engagement with China. His other pet issues will include mental health, homelessness and restoring some of the large-scale loss of natural environment in Casey. Just two per cent of Casey’s environment remained from 40 years ago, he said. There was a need to balance the urgent need for more jobs with maintaining the environment, he said. Cr Ablett also would lobby for the State Government to pursue a Western Distributorstyle partnership with a private consortium to fast-track road upgrades in the South-East.
A double-rail line between Dandenong and Clyde’s growth corridor was also high on Cr Ablett’s agenda. Meanwhile incumbent mayor Cr Sam Aziz backed Cr Ablett as a “man of tremendous integrity” to take over the helm. “He is the most active councillor in terms of putting forward ideas and initiatives. “He would be a fantastic person to continue the stability and teamwork we’ve established in Casey.” He nominated the turnaround in “culture” at Casey as one of his most significant legacies. “Eight years ago, Casey was making headlines for all the wrong reasons like councillor infighting. “We’re now making the headlines for Bunjil
Place, we’re making the headlines for planning for a smarter city in the future ... “It’s a great place to be and I’m proud of the contribution I’ve been making.” He will be presented with a mayoral emeritus certificate for three terms as mayor at the council’s first meeting at Bunjil Place on 9 November. Cr Aziz has been offered seven leading portfolios under Cr Ablett, including roads and transport, economic development, innovation and Smart Cities, and advocacy for Casey ahead of the 2018 State Election. “There’s no rest for the wicked,” Cr Aziz said.

Jail for knife raid By Cam Lucadou-Wells A repeat armed robber who threatened to kill a Dandenong North bottle shop worker as he held a knife to his throat has been jailed. Shane Jefferson, 25, of Beaconsfield, pleaded guilty to armed robbery, threatening to kill and breaching a corrections order in the Victorian County Court. About 7.40pm on 22 December 2016 Jefferson, with his face covered by an orange bandana, moved behind the liquor counter. Jefferson raised the 25-centimetre knife against the worker’s throat and told him: “I’m going to kill you, c***”. “Give us all your money.”
Jefferson and a co-robber in a ‘Scream’ mask grabbed money from the cash register, as well as cigarettes and booze, the court heard. During the hold-up, Jefferson’s bandana slipped from his face. The victim recognised him as a previous customer. Before the robbers left in a nearby getaway car, Jefferson pointed the knife at the worker and warned him not to call police. “I’ll come back and murder you, c***. I’ll kill you,” he repeated several times. Jefferson was arrested by police the next day, and denied knowledge of the robbery during a police interview. During sentencing on 9 November, Judge Susan Pullen said she was in no doubt that the
victim was “scared for his life” during the threeminute hold-up. Jefferson had told a psychologist that “I could have killed an innocent man over nothing”, Judge Pullen noted. The “most serious and disturbing” robbery was aggravated by robbing a “soft target” with a disguised co-offender and a level of pre-planning. The accused also had “troubling” prior criminal history, including being on a corrections order at the time for a previous armed robbery. He had been sentenced to the four-year CCO by the same judge five months before the incident. Jefferson was jailed for up to four years, four months for the new offending as well as re-sentencing for the previous armed robbery.
Ambulances are responding eight seconds quicker to code one emergencies in Greater Dandenong. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said latest figures showed 84.7 per cent of ambulances arrived within 15 minutes for code one emergencies in the June to September quarter. This was up from 84.2 per cent compared to the same time last year. The average response time for an ambulance to reach the scene of a code one emergency in Greater Dandenong improved from 11.28 minutes to 11.20 minutes. Ambulance Employees Australia secretary Steve McGhie said there was a substantial improvement across the state. “I’m hopeful this time next year we will see bigger improvements once again,” he said.

A Dandenong North couple is more than $370,000 richer after the TattsLotto numbers they’ve been using for 10 years finally came up. They were on their way to lunch when a Tatts official called with the news about their division one win on Monday 6 November. “Now we will probably go and get something nicer to celebrate,” the man said. His wife said: “You’re kidding me! Oh my God! That is so exciting! You’ve just made my day!” She used to play the same numbers but years ago had a running joke with her colleagues that they never came up. “So they gave me these new numbers and said I would win on these ones and I’ve been playing them ever since,” she said. “It took 10 years, but they were right!” The couple said they didn’t yet know how they’d spend the win, but the cash had come at a really good time. “It’s just going to change our lives. It’s just really going to take the pressure off,” she said. “You have no idea - you’ve just made our day, our month, our lives!” Along with the $369,059 division one prize, the winners’ System 8 marked entry in the Saturday 4 November draw also won division three 12 times and division four 15 times, bolstering the total prize to $378,807. The couple bought the winning ticket at Brady Road Family Supermarket in Dandenong North. Owner Carlos Aboujaber was thrilled to have sold another division one-winning entry. “It is the second division one-winning entry we have sold in two years,” he said. “We hope we can sell another one again soon. “Congratulations to our winners. We hope it really helps them out.” The winning numbers were 22, 7, 30, 4, 17 and 26. The supplementary numbers were 41 and 44. Across Australia there were 11 division one winning-entries, including six from Victoria.

… BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE The editor’s desk If you’ve read our story this week of a local Aussie and a Sudanese immigrant and their ‘crash-bang’ close encounter, then you’ve been exposed to yet another reason why Dandenong is such a successful multi-cultural melting pot. It’s about as heart-warming as it gets. Those of us who drive in Dandenong regularly are well aware that while the city might be a textbook multi-cultural community, is it is perhaps not home to the finest drivers in the nation. So when the Aussie’s car had an unfortunate encounter with another vehicle driven by a Sudanese immigrant there could have been every reason for a lack of optimism as to the outcome. But, as they say in the classics, you won’t believe what happened next. The Sudanese lady gave her victim a lift immediately. And while her circumstances didn’t permit the $3500 damage bill to be paid all at once, it was paid ... and ahead of the schedule, too. As Aussie Vin Johnson said in bringing the yarn to our attention: “If you’re prepared to get up at 3.30am to go to Hungry Jack’s to work a cleaning job, you deserve a break as far as I’m concerned.” Well said, Vin. And well done too. It’s a powerful example to us all of what a little trust and co-operation can achieve. And while members of Dandenong’s immigrant community might not match the local product in regards to skill behind the wheel, there seems little doubt that they shine in the honesty and integrity stakes. IN BRIEF Fire destroys warehouse
Trapped by lights By Casey Neill A partially-blind Noble Park man says new traffic lights have made him a prisoner in his own home. Brian Fernando, 68, lives alone in the Athol Road address he’s called home for about 35 years. “I was looking after mum for 17 years and she passed away a few years ago,” he said. He said Greater Dandenong Council installed traffic lights outside his Noble Street earlier this year. “I’m partially blind at the moment because of my diabetes,” he said. “I have to see the doctor about three times a month. “I take a taxi. “They toot or they abuse because the taxis stop there. “There’s no parking in front of the house. “If you’re lucky you can get a parking spot on the side road.” Mr Fernando said it was now difficult to turn into his driveway from either direction. “I’ve lost so many friends. My friends won’t come to see me now,” he said. “I can’t get out of the house because of the traffic. They toot you. “I’m imprisoned in my own house.” Mr Fernando said a council representative told him that residents received notification of the proposed project by mail. “I never got a letter,” he said. “They never consulted us. “They said it was because of accidents. “Sure, there were accidents there, but the thing is, the traffic lights are not going to stop the accidents. “Speed humps, they would have stopped the accidents.
A Noble Park man says these lights have trapped him inside his home. 174601 Picture: GARY SISSONS “Traffic lights have nothing to do with the speeding.” He said the lights remained green at night. “That doesn’t stop them from drag racing,” he said. The council’s engineering services director, Julie Reid, said residents were advised of the proposal and invited to comment prior to the council installing the lights. She said some residents did comment on the proposed project. “Access to any private property has not been impacted, and the property referred to has on-site parking available,” she said. Ms Reid said the Federal Government fund-

ed the lights. “It was identified as a black spot with a history of casualty crashes,” she said. “The project design was assessed by an independent road safety auditor and the result is now a much safer outcome for the community.” Ms Reid said the council considered a roundabout, and in September 2015 the Journal reported that the Federal Government Nation Building Blackspot Program had contributed $293,000 for just that. “However due to constraints this was not determined to be the most effective treatment,” she said.
Fire engulfed a Hallam warehouse on Thursday 9 November, causing the roof to collapse and sending smoke over surrounding suburbs. Grace Removals said the fire broke out at its Decor Drive site just before 9.30pm and was contained to a mechanic’s garage. No one was injured. “Grace reports that the removals and storage warehouse remains unaffected and open for business,” a statement from the company said. “Grace is currently working with authorities to evaluate the cause of the fire.” Managing director Steven Brown thanked the responding fire crews for containing the flames. “All of their efforts to keep the damage to a minimum are greatly appreciated,” he said. A CFA spokeswoman said firefighters arrived to find a 50 metre by 20 metre steel and concrete shed at the rear of the property fully alight. The intense blaze caused the roof to collapse so firefighters were unable to enter the building. About 30 firefighters attended in 15 vehicles from brigades including Hallam, Narre Warren, Hampton Park, Narre Warren North, Dandenong and Frankston. They deployed Dandenong’s aerial ladder and the teleboom - small ladder - from Frankston, and firefighters wore breathing apparatus.
Laundry thieves should come clean Four thieves think they made a clean getaway following a Dandenong burglary, but police hope the public will prove them wrong. They’re appealing for help to identify those responsible for the coin laundry heist at 2.40pm on Saturday 14 October. Investigators believe that three men and a woman broke into a rear store room at the Hemmings Street business and obtained keys to the coin-operated machines in the front. They allegedly used the keys to steal money from each machine before fleeing.

10 November 1997 Green waste Greater Dandenong residents are likely to have a green waste collection service in the new year. The council is expected to adopt a proposal to collect garden refuse form residents four times a year. The proposal, which will be presented to the council at its meeting tonight, recommends $300,000 be referred to the 1998-‘99 budget. The council officers were asked to inves-
12 November 2012 Chimney gone in a flash Despite the popular saying, last Tuesday’s lightning strike on the Dandenong North historical homestead may not have been the first time. The bolt on Melbourne Cup day caused $70,000 damage to the circa 1889 home ‘Rossmoyne’ after striking its middle brick chimney about 4pm. The top third of the chimney’s bricks were propelled by the strike, smashing roof tiles, a window and landing in the back yard.
Turkish for tasty treats By Casey Neill
EAT LOCAL, DINE GLOBAL like eyes, and this is the reason why it is called gozleme.” Only spinach, salt and pepper feature in the traditional gozleme. Dough Works serves up spinach and feta; chicken, spinach and feta; chicken, mushroom and feta; lamb, spinach and fetta; and createyour-own options. “It is a dream come true for savoury lovers,” they said.
“Cheese melted with absolutely fresh spinach and deliciously spiced meat or, if you are vegetarian only, a mix of vegetables melted with cheese. “It tastes amazing, it looks beautiful, it smells divine - you just need to try.” The Dough Works team opened its caravan shutters at Dandenong Market in early 2008.

Gozleme is a traditional Turkish village food with a crispy pastry outer and a melting savoury middle. Ismet ‘Izzy’ Ozyurek and Emel Yilmaz run Dough Works Gozleme and Kebabs. They explained that the authentic way to cook the filled pastry dish was on a hot plate fired by fresh wood. “A few ladies from the village usually gather and make large batches for family members,” they said. ‘Goz’ translates to ‘eye’ in Turkish. “Although there’s no exact translation to gozleme it sounds something along the lines of ‘to make eye’,” the Dough Works team said. “When the gozleme is cooked, small round darker circles appear on the pastry and looks
“Gozleme was a food our mothers and grandmothers made on weekends in Australia to continue the Turkish village street food tradition,” they said. “We decided that this food was getting ever-popular in Sydney and not many people in Melbourne were providing it to food-loving people around, so we were here to start the gozleme craze in the South-Eastern suburbs. “Even where people don’t have much money in Turkey, they still eat like kings and queens. “Gozleme is so tasty and it isn’t well known like some of the other traditional street foods of other countries like pasta, pizza, kebab etcetera so we wanted to sell something that’s not like anything else.” Dough Works also serves up traditional Turkish kebabs with lamb, beef or chicken, garlic sauce and salad.

Greater Dandenong Highway Patrol found a plate-less motorbike parked on the grass outside Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Friday 4 November. Officers made a few inquiries and established that the owner, from Broadmeadows, was inside the court house. Further checks revealed that the hearing cancelled and disqualified the rider’s licence for 12 months back in February and that the bike was unregistered. Police impounded the bike for 30 days at a cost of $1038 and the owner has another date with a magistrate.

A $400,000 makeover is on the way for Dandenong Primary School’s heritage-listed building. “I was incredibly pleased for the school and the school community,” principal Daniel Riley said. “A lot of our money goes into maintaining the building.” The State Government announced the funding on Thursday 9 November as part of its planned maintenance program along with $173,767 for Noble Park North’s Carwatha College. Mr Riley said the well-known Dandenong Primary School building on Foster Street dated back to 1881 so was almost 140 years old. He said there were cracks in walls and holes in floors. “We’ve got windows that we can’t open because when we try to close them bits of wood fall off them,” he said. “The other challenge for us is, given its age, it was built at a time when they would have used lead in the paint. “It’s not a straightforward job here if we want to paint. “We need to get specialist painters in to remove the old paint and dispose of it. “It does put pressure on the school budget. “If we can get that all fixed up, it really takes the pressure off looking after the building so we can focus on teaching.” He said the building was “incredible” and “a big source of pride for the staff and the students”. “We still get, from time to time, people who attended the schools years ago coming to the school who want to look at their old classroom,” he said.

THE LOWDOWN Q&A
with Loretta Binder, Keysborough Fire Brigade 1st Lieutenant
What is something people don’t know about you? I’ve always wanted to fly to space. What was your most memorable firefighting moment? Going on my first long-haul strike team. My crew were deployed to Gisborne and Riddle’s Creek where we were assigned to asset protection, meaning protecting people’s property from the threat of fire, and after that ended up all the way down at Hazelwood Mine. It was a really rewarding experience knowing that I was working alongside the team to protect the local communities. As a newer member at the time it was a rather eye-opening experience in terms of fire behaviour and changing conditions. What would your last meal be? Enchiladas.
THREE … crafty ways to find new friends
1
The Social Knitwork meets at the Dandenong Library each Wednesday morning from 10am during school terms. Members make new friends while developing new skills, sharing patterns, stories and good times.
2
The Noble Park Country Women’s Association (CWA) meets on the second and fourth Mondays of each month at Noble Park’s Paddy O’Donoghue Centre. The second Monday is dedicated to craft, and runs from 10am to 1.30pm. Call 9547 7261 for more information.
3
Dandenong’s University of the Third Age (U3A) holds classes in knitting and crochet, oil painting, parchment craft and more. It meets at the Paddy O’Donoghue Centre in Noble Park and welcomes new members. Call 9546 2997 for more information.
What event, past, present or future, would you like to witness? Man landing on Mars or watching Collingwood win another premiership live. Whichever comes first I’d be happy. What drew you to the CFA? I was really drawn to the opportunity to contribute to the community in which I live and gain the skills and knowledge to ultimately work as part of a team to assist the community in an emergency. I am always up for a challenge and being a CFA volunteer challenges you in many ways, under a variety of adverse conditions.
What six guests, dead or alive, would you invite to a dinner party? Jimi Hendrix, Oprah Winfrey, Malala Yousafzai, Buzz Aldrin and my mother’s parents Nancy and Dominic. What has been your most embarrassing moment? There’s a few to choose from. When I was probably about 10, my aunty took me to meet my AFL hero Nathan Buckley.
I waited for what seemed like forever in line and when I finally got to meet him I froze and all I could manage to squeak out was ‘hi Nath’. At school I ... Could be found hanging out in the music room. What was your first or best concert? First concert was Carlos Santana back in 2003 with my high school friends.
12371555-RC46-17
What are you watching on TV? I’m currently binging on Stranger Things on Netflix.

WELCOMING TOUCHES FOR NEW RESIDENTS WHEN residents join a new community often their first encounter with their new neighbours happens after the move, but at Berwick Waters, Frasers Property Australia and Mondous Property Australia are changing that. At the Berwick Waters joint development in Melbourne’s south-east, prospective new buyers are receiving welcome messages, tips and advice from residents through the innovative Greenshoots Project installation. In all, the installation features 80 messages written by Berwick Waters residents, with each individually designed and handcrafted by artist Rosie Woods before being transposed onto pots, forming a welcoming display around the sales office and stretching to the new Waterside Park. The messages provide unique first-hand insights into life in the new community. “While communities have changed 2 DANDENONG JOURNAL

substantially over the past few decades, one thing that hasn’t changed is the sense of wellbeing that comes from having a strong neighbourly network and community,” said Sarah Bloom, General Manager - Residential VIC, Frasers Property Australia. “The Greenshoots Project is about welcoming people to the community and giving them a sense of what it’s like to live in Berwick Waters before the slab on their new home is even poured.” “Moving into a new community can be a daunting and sometimes lonely experience. “This is one way to break down some of those barriers and make people feel at home in their new community from the very first day. “Anyone visiting our display village or looking around the already flourishing Berwick Waters community will be able to wander through the garden and read these messages to find out what people love

Ms Bloom said the messages range from people simply wanting to say “hi” to their neighbours, to people talking about how they use the community’s many amenities and enjoy its natural attractions. Enjoying the open spaces at Berwick Waters features prominently among the messages. There is now even more open space for residents to enjoy with the now open new Waterside Park. The park features a children’s playground, expansive green open spaces, walking paths and picnic areas as well as a half-size basketball court. “We know that integrating inviting spaces to enjoy outdoor activities makes a big difference to people’s health and wellbeing. “The new Waterside Park completes another part of the bigger plan at Berwick com.au

Bill Toogood dies aged 89 The Dandenong community has lost longtime resident and businessman Bill Toogood. He died at Dandenong Hospital on Tuesday 24 October, aged 89. Sister-in-law Val told the Journal that he celebrated his final birthday in hospital before succumbing to heart failure. “He was very agile right up until he went to hospital,” she said. “He was a very keen gardener. “He had macular degeneration but it didn’t stop him from doing handyman jobs at home. “He had a wonderful vegie garden, and also pot plants.” Val said that Bill worked in Dandenong for
“a good 30 or more years” and was well-known in the community. “He first worked in Cadles Arcade, which was near Dimmies,” she said. That was in Henry Hicks’ butchery. “Then he worked for a boss up in Thomas Street and then he bought the business himself and he was there for many years,” Val said. “He was very friendly when the Journal was in (neighbouring) Scott Street. “Their back door backed out onto a square there and so did his butcher shop.” He renamed the shop Toogood Meats when he took it on. Bill married Val’s sister, Gwen, back in 1956.
“He lived all his married life in Alexander Avenue in Dandenong,” Val said. It was a dirt road with very few residents when they moved in - in a caravan. Bill built their home. Last year, when celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary, Bill told the Journal that marriage was the “best thing in my life”. Family and friends celebrated Bill’s life at Bunurong Memorial Park on Wednesday 1 November. Bill had Gwen had three sons, Gary, Michael and Phillip, and five grandchildren. Welcome scroll list grows The Welcome Scroll rolled into Greater Dandenong as a message of support for refugees. It landed at Dandenong Civic Centre on Thursday 2 November as part of a national tour. The scroll contains the names of more than 110 local governments who have declared themselves a Refugee Welcome Zone. Greater Dandenong has been a Refugee Welcome Zone since 2002. Councillors welcomed the scroll with a special event and pledged the council’s continued support for refugee and asylum seeker communities.

It takes a lot to stop inspirational 26-year-old cancer survivor Daniel Margariti in his tracks. After raising more than $7000 in 2017, Daniel will be back for more laps in the Casey Relay For Life event in March. Since he was 18, the Dandenong resident has beaten two serious attack of testicular cancer, serious infections and had large tumours removed from stomach, spine and liver. Far from bowed, Daniel has in the meantime finished a business and commerce course at Monash University, volunteered at a Tanzanian orphanage and at the charity Riding Develops Abilities. He’s also founded and led the Young Adult Cancer Support (YACS) group, and starting to mentor foster-care children through a Pyjama Foundation program. It should be little surprise that Daniel walked 13 kilometres over the last two-day Relay for Life. Despite just having 49 per cent lung capacity. He remembers fondly the support of so many including his family and friends. His 2017 team directed the funds to Monash University research into using the body’s “natural killer cells” to detect and destroy cancer cells. “Hopefully one day, the natural killer cells can defend the body without the need for chemo. “Chemo is such a hard thing - it kills your body slowly while hopefully killing the cancer before it kills you. “But it’s the only thing we have at this stage.” Daniel is no stranger to chemo treatment. But he also prospered from a stem-cell transplant trial as a last resort option in 2015 when his chemo was no longer effective. In the past few months, he’s been recovering from surgery to reattach his herniated abdomen muscles. There are also the mental
battles of post-traumatic stress from the whole eight-year ordeal. “I’m not sure what life has going forward for me. “I’ve spent so much time in hospital, I’m just appreciating the chance to live my life. “To be able to do things for myself, to go out to the beach and go for a big drive means a lot for me.” His YACS group - made up of 43 young members around Australia - has been a key part of his life for the past year. “The Cancer Council asked me if I wanted to step up and create a support group. “I was really in need of meeting other young people - there were zero around while I was having treatment in hospital. “Friends and family are amazing, but people can’t understand the perspective of someone unless they’ve been through it.” Daniel connected with other young people with the same health battles. They shared a similar view on life and giving. Most are volunteering for charity, focused on helping others through social work, nursing and education. “My psychologist said you’re never going to have a justification for what has happened but for me, this gives me some meaning. “To get a negative and make it a positive.” At the same time, Daniel’s pitching in to promote Relay For Life in the hope of attracting 100 teams. The Casey event is close to raising $4 million during its 10-year history. • He’s particularly keen on involving young people and school groups, and spreading awareness of teenage cancers. The event’s theme this year is ‘Community • Coming Together’ to fight cancer, remember and celebrate life. For details and to register, go to the Face• book page of Casey Relay For Life.

Learning the signs Welcoming a child into the world is a lifechanging experience. The perinatal period (pregnancy through to a child’s first birthday) will bring smiles, cuddles and fun, but also tears, lost sleep and stress. Even the healthiest person will take time to adjust and some women will have more difficulty adjusting than others. With Perinatal Mental Health Awareness Week from 12-18 November it’s important to know that perinatal anxiety and depression can happen to any expecting or new parent - it does not discriminate. According to PANDA (Perinatal Anxiety and Depression Australia), one in five expecting or new mums and one in 10 expecting or new dads will experience perinatal anxiety or depression. Fortunately, new parents in the Casey Cardinia Region have access to St John of God Berwick Raphael Services which works tirelessly with new families who are suffering from perinatal depression and anxiety. Staffed by a multidisciplinary team of mental health clinicians, Raphael Services provides specialised perinatal mental health (including psychiatric) care to mothers, fathers and families during the perinatal and infancy stages of life. This includes assessments, individual therapy and group therapy. More importantly, these services are available to all members of the community and are offered free of charge or at minimal cost as part of St John of God Healthcare’s commitment to social outreach in the local community. With a GP or medical referral these services can be accessed from conception until the child is four years of age.

Perinatal anxiety and depression can happen to any expecting or new parent. Although it is normal to experience a degree of anxiety and ups and downs when expecting a baby, at times some expecting or new parents can develop a more pronounced anxiety or lower mood (depression) which affects their daily life. However, there are treatments, supports and services available to help sufferers through this experience and St John of God Berwick Raphael Services is a great place to start. Signs that someone may be experiencing antenatal anxiety and depression can include: Panic attacks; Persistent, generalised worry, often focused on fears for the health or wellbeing of the baby; The development of obsessive or compulsive behaviours; Abrupt mood
swings; Feeling constantly sad, low, or crying for no obvious reason; Being nervous, on edge or panicky; Feeling constantly tired and lacking energy; Sleeping too much or not very well; Losing interest in normal things that usually bring joy; Being easily annoyed or irritated; Withdrawing from friends or family; Engaging in more risky behaviour; Finding it difficult to concentrate; and Having thoughts of death or suicide. Anyone who experiences these symptoms for more than two weeks should contact St John of God Berwick Raphael Services on 9707 3988 or see their GP. In a crisis situation, call triple zero.
Dandenong Dermatology Centre has been providing dermatology care and laser therapy to the area for many years. The centre is headed by Dr Peter Fergin, Dr Olivia Milne and Dr Stephen Gilmore. The trio were recently joined by Dr Rebecca Nguyen. Laser treatments are provided by dermatology and cosmetic nurse Marie Lebrasse. Marie has many years of expertise with laser treatments and techniques. She regularly updates her laser knowledge and skills and adheres to all new standards and regulations. Dr Fergin says that with summer over, now is the perfect time to repair the freckles or pigmentation that appear on exposed skin on the face, chest and hands. “Photo rejuvenation is one of the newest therapies in laser, and gives great results with minimal down time. “Photo rejuvenation with radio frequency technologies applies small amounts of heat safely into the dermis.” Dandenong Dermatology Centre is at 1/110 David Street. Skill and effort makes it he has crafted on and off the field. “I try and think I can play a similar role at AFL level to what I do now - a key defender that has the ability to intercept and be that attacking defender who can hurt the opposition,” he said. “Leadership is something I’ve always grown up wanting to do, and I’ve always had the passion to do it. “If I’m lucky enough to play AFL it will be something I naturally bring, rather than try too much. “With a couple of leadership roles in a couple of teams this year, it really brought the best out of me and it was a great learning curve for me.” Being one of eight potential draftees in the upcoming draft, he is excited and thrilled to be sharing a journey with his mates. “It’s awesome to see guys that I’ve come up with in the under-16 really develop and finally start to get a lot of reward. From the club’s point of view, it’s just exciting,” he said. “We probably haven’t had a draft quite like this probably ever, so eight possible draftees is an incredible effort.” The draft will be held at the Sydney International Showground on 24 November.
By Nick Creely Dandenong Stingray captain Oscar Clavarino possesses genuine leadership, an ability to read the ball in the air as well as anyone, and razor-sharp foot skills. These traits will ensure the Berwick youngster will be a valuable commodity when he lands at an AFL club on 24 November. The 18-year-old enjoyed a strong season for the Stingrays, Haileybury College and Vic Country marshalling the defence, and averaged 16 disposals and six marks a game in his eight TAC Cup games. He believes he has done everything he can possibly do, as the AFL draft looms closer and closer with each day. “I have no regrets this season, I put everything into it, and got a fair bit out of the year. “While some games weren’t as good as others, I think it was a big learning curve and in this stage of my footy life, it was good to have those games to see where I need to get better,” he said. “I was happy with how I performed and how the season panned out.” While unsure about where the next phase of his footballing journey will take him, Clavarino explained his level headed approach to the draft. “I haven’t thought about it a heap (the draft), but people still ask me about it so, of course, it’ll be in the back of the mind. “When people ask me I say I’m nervous but I haven’t really thought about it,” he said. “Not a heap of my friends are into footy so it’s good to hang out with them and get a bit of a break about it, to be honest. “As it gets closer, it’ll get a bit more nerveracking each day.”
Oscar Clavarino, here tackling for Vic Country, will add valuable leadership to any AFL club. And with the possibility that he may need to move out of his comfort zone to forge an AFL career, Clavarino will relish the challenge “Speaking to interstate clubs and most clubs that will mean I have to move out of home, opens me up to what path comes next. “My family supports me and is open to the
possibility that it could happen,” he said. “I don’t really know what will happen so I’m just open to what can happen, and I’ll take it on with everything I have.” The key defender believes he can play a similar role to that of Melbourne’s Jake Lever at AFL level, while also blending in the leadership

Jockeys take a moment to drive for dream A squad of talents By Mick Floyd
The race that stops a nation has been run and won for another year, but for a growing number of jockeys their Melbourne Cup dream is just beginning. Several prominent hoops including Jye McNeil, Harry Coffey, Ben Allen, Mark Zahra and Patrick Moloney have formed a syndicate with Ben Thompson, son of leading trainer Seona Thompson. They purchased two beautifully bred bitches by Kinloch Brae, now 15 months old, and should hit the track in the first half of 2018. Ben Thompson, who has ridden 25 winners this season to lead all Victorian apprentices, has already enjoyed success in the TAB Melbourne Cup having handled 2012 winner Got A Moment when just 15 years of age. “Dad had two runners in the Cup and he gave me the longshot, Got A Moment and she happened to win the race,” Thompson said. “I had just started riding track work at the time and had a few of the racing crew there. To say I strapped the Melbourne Cup winner is any jockey’s goal.” Being the son of one of the country’s most prominent greyhound racing families has naturally led many fellow hoops to inquire about his parent’s team. “You’d be surprised at how many of the other jocks follow the dogs. “Sometimes they’re more up to date than me with how the team is going. I get to go to the dogs every now and then, it’s a good night out.” Syndicate member Jye McNeil is looking forward to seeing the pups get to the track and being part of a day at the greyhounds. “It’s going to be cool once they get to the races,” he said. “Obviously we’ll try and get there to watch it and get amongst it.” The heats of the TAB Melbourne Cup will be run on Friday 17 November with the winner of each heat progressing to the final of the world’s richest greyhound race on Friday 24 November. 36 STAR JOURNAL

By Nick Creely The Dandenong District Cricket Association has named its annual VMCU Neil Wright Under-21 side, with 15 of the most talented youngsters in the association selected. Once again the side will be coached by DDCA legend Craig Slocombe, with the association looking to claim its third shield in just four years. In last year’s Neil Wright Shield, the DDCA lost its semi-final against Ringwood CA by 59 runs after a brilliant opening three rounds. Eleven players have been picked from current Turf 1 clubs, with highly touted youngsters such as Jakob Woinarski, Imran Laghmani, Jack Jessiman all part of the final squad, while North Dandenong youngster Caleb Millman will captain after impressing in the last few years for the Maroons. HERE IS THE FULL SQUAD: Berwick - Jack Phillips Buckley Ridges - Zack Martin Coomoora - Joel Robertson Dandenong West - Riley Siwes Doveton North - Bryce Dinger Hallam Kalora Park - Jack Jessiman Lynbrook - Ryan Lowe Mordialloc - Jakob Woinarski Narre Warren - Imran Laghmani North Dandenong - Caleb Millman Parkfield - Riley Payne Springvale South - Liam Hamilton, Brayden Sharp, Callum Sigaras and Nathan Villella
The heats for the TAB Melbourne Cup will be run on Friday 17 November.
Monday, 13 November, 2017
The DDCA will kick off its campaign on Sunday 19 November with a clash with North Metro CA at Rowley Allen Reserve, Keysborough, and will also play Eastern CA at Rowley Allen on 26 November and Diamond Valley CA at Hallam Reserve on 10 December to round out their matches. Sunday 17 December will be the spare day if any games are washed out. dandenong.starcommunity.com.au

A pair of perfect Panthers By Nick Creely VIC PREMIER CRICKET REVIEW - ROUND 6 It’s common knowledge in Premier Cricket that breaking up Dandenong opening duo Tom Donnell and Brett Forsyth can win or lose a game of cricket - except no one seems to know how to do it before it’s too late. And on Saturday at Shepley Oval, Kingston Hawthorn found out the hard way, with the duo compiling their 14th century stand as an opening combination to guide the Panthers to a comfortable four-wicket win. Winning the toss and batting, the Hawks got off to a swift start courtesy of aggressive openers Ramneet Dhindsa (45) and the stylish Shorye Chopra (27), reaching 56 before medium pacer Peter Cassidy (3/27) forced Chopra into an errant shot that was swallowed at midon by overseas recruit Steve Mullaney, playing his first game for the club this year. Cassidy broke through twice more in consecutive balls - after the visitors steadied - to shatter the stumps of Dhindsa and catch the edge of Ryan Ninan (0), leaving the Hawks 3/101 at the half way mark. Some outstanding power hitting and timing from Jack Taylor (61 from 45 balls) got the Hawks into a strong position for a formidable total, before Mullaney (4/53) crafted four wickets with his class despite coping some flack early to help peg back the visitors. Despite seemingly having momentum, the Hawks managed 8/234 off their 50 overs - perhaps 30 runs short considering the form of the home side with the bat, and in particular, Donnell and Forsyth.. As they have done for the best part of a decade, Donnell (63) and Forsyth (74) combined class with brute striking power to carve their way to 126 runs for the first wicket, squarely putting the game in the Panthers’ court with
Dandenong recruit Steve Mullaney steams in during his four wicket haul on Saturday. 174918 textbook limited overs batting. Although the Hawks regained some momentum by picking up the scalps of Donnell, stumped by spinner Yaisru Herath (3/42), Forsyth and then Mullaney (3), the damage was well and truly done by the legendary pair. The Panthers found the runs with ease, with
James Nanopoulos (24 not out) and Jacques Augustin (4 not out) guiding the home side to victory with one over to spare. The win leaves the Panthers entrenched into the top two with a 5-1 record, with the Twenty20 portion of the season to begin on Saturday against Melbourne.
Picture: ROB CAREW Meanwhile, in the seconds, Comrey Edgeworth’s mind boggling season continued on Saturday at Walt Galt Reserve, with the top order bat scoring his third century of the year. After top scoring in his only ones appearance last week, Edgeworth ploughed 103 runs to see the Panthers to a comfortable win.
Bucks proving that they are the real deal By Nick Creely DDCA TURF 1 - ROUND 3 (DAY TWO) BUCKLEY RIDGES continued on with its irresistible start to the Turf 1 season with a crushing victory over reigning premiers, MORDIALLOC, at Park Oval on Saturday. Winning the toss and batting, Daniel Watson (51) and star recruit Greg Todd (110) got the Bucks off to a perfect 79 -run start, slamming the boundaries and putting the brilliant Bloodhound bowling line up under the pump. Todd made a wonderful century- anchoring the innings and seeing the Bucks to a formidable 6/235 off 40 overs. Watson (4/19), Wes Nicholas (2/41) and Matthew Goodwright (2/26) then all combined with the ball to roll the Bloodhounds for just 166 - Peter McDermott top scored with 43. The also undefeated SPRINGVALE SOUTH, rolled CRANBOURNE with ease at Alex Nelson Reserve to sit second on the ladder.
After setting 278 for victory, the Eagles stood very little chance after being 2/40 as play resumed on Saturday, and were rolled for just 146 off 55 overs, with skipper Lucas Ligt (29) battling hard for his side. But it was spinner Jarryd Straker (7/41) who completely stole the show to cap off a dominant opening three rounds. At Lois Twohig Reserve, NORTH DANDENONG narrowly escaped an embarrassing reverse outright loss to ST MARY’S, claiming the points after a drama filled day two. After rolling the Saints for just 39 on day one after making 126 themselves, the visitors rode their luck with the bat in their second dig, as Rhys Serpanchy (102 not out) and skipper Kaushyala Gajasinghe (86) somehow lifted them to 6/262 off 55 overs before declaring. With the Maroons needing 175 off 33 overs for outright, or simply to survive for first-innings points, Syed Mehmood (12) and Sanjeewa De Silva (31) started steadily enough.
But spinners Ruwantha Kellepotha (4/6) and Kaushyla Gajasinghe (2/23) combined beautifully to rip apart the Maroons and leave them 8/79 with four overs left. But Gayantha Wijelithaka and David Bell managed to survive the tense last 15 minutes. Finally, a second consecutive century to HALLAM KALORA PARK star Leigh Booth saw the Hawks to a thrilling win over DINGLEY. Booth (106 not out) struck a faultless century and stood tall, with the Dingoes pushing the Hawks right to the brink after setting just 151 for victory. While other batsmen fell victim to Christo Otto (3/57) and Dinuka Hettiarchchci (5/51), Booth stood tall to guide his side home with two wickets to spare. And a dominant all-round display by Kaushyala Weerarate (6/37 and 103*) saw HEINZ SOUTHERN DISTRICTS (136 and 3/214) win over a competitive NARRE WARREN (110).

Hawks through with Booth By Nick Creely DDCA TWENTY20 CUP ROUND 2 REVIEW Hallam-Kalora Park star Leigh Booth stole the show with a stellar match winning century in last Wednesday’s Twenty20 thriller with Mordialloc at Hallam Reserve. In an entertaining clash between the two powerhouses, the Hawks escaped with an incredible one run victory. After winning the toss and batting, Booth struck a brutal 106, a knock that included seven fours and seven sixes and, combined with Jagveer Hayer (55), lifted the home side to a formidable 3/176. Although plenty Bloodhound bowlers took a belting, their professionals in Ian Daniel (1/20) and skipper Chathura Athukorala (2/20) kept the score within reach. The Bloodhounds did their best to crash the boundaries and despite terrific knocks to Brendan Morris (63), Peter McDermott (29), Damith Mapa Ralage (26) and Ian Daniel (24), fell just one run short on 7/175. Down at Perc Allison Oval, North Dandenong put in an impressive performance to win its second straight match against Beaconsfield. Off the back of in-form skipper Matt Golding (70), the Tigers could only muster up 7/136 off their 20 overs, as Clay McCartney (2/31) and Mitchel Minhas (3/29) did terrific work with the ball. Marquee man Adam Amin struck a terrific 59 to help the Maroons overtake the Tigers’ score with two wickets left in the shed. Narre Warren also gave Berwick a run for its money, with only a late hat-trick to Cory Bevan helping the Bears over the line. After Matt Chasemore (60) helped guide the Bears to 8/142, the Magpies looked in a strong

The Magpies eventually fell short by 10runs, finishing on 9/132. Narre South (5/132) also notched up a win over Doveton North (6/128), despite an attacking 63 to Jackson Freeman, while Springvale South (8/141) pulled away from a highly competitive St Mary’s (8/128) at Carroll Reserve.

With sleek and sporty looks, the new Renault sedan plays down the performance side of its hothatch siblings. 16-inch Silverline alloy wheels. While the Zen model misses out on mood LED lighting and a standard Multidrive experience, there is plenty of design features to put occupants at ease. The dashboard is sleek with a non-scratch soft-touch finish while the steering wheel can be optioned with a rich Nappa full grain leather wrap. Renault’s own R-Link 2 multimedia system controls multiple functions via a seven-inch landscape touchscreen (a larger 8.7-inch tablet-style screen in the Intens model). R-Link 2 allows the choice of personal home screens, varying the size and position of maps, radio, contacts, navigation and other functions. As with a smartphone or computer, the Me-

Renault has created a modern dynasty of hot hatches on the back of a formidable Formula One motor racing record - think Megane and Clio. Now the French automotive giant has added to the Megane family Down Under with a wagon and sedan. In comparison to the performance-based Megane hatch with which it was born and bred, the new sedan is a stylish, premium packaged, practical vehicle, which is, once the steepish initial outlay is overcome, economical to live with. It comes to Australia in two models - Zen and Intens - priced from $27,490 and $31,990 respectively, plus on road costs and both featuring Renault’s seven-speed Efficient dualclutch transmission. Power comes from a 2.0-litre Energy TCe 130 turbocharged petrol engine, the ‘130’ referring to the horsepower (97 kW) it puts out. The Zen sedan can be optioned with an Advanced Driver Assistance System Pack, which consists of advanced emergency braking interurban and lane departure warning, as well as a Sunroof Pack with electric sunroof, automatic dimming rear view mirror and sun visor with illuminated mirror. Front and centre is a bold chrome grille wearing the Renault badge and linking headlamp units wrapped in C-shaped LED daytime running lights. The emphasised horizontal rear light treatment almost meets in the middle, giving the sedan breadth to its looks from behind. In profile the Megane sedan takes on the sleek form usually associated with a two-door sports coupe, its flared wheel arches adding to the effect wrapping around the latest design
