Charles Stewart was born at the Lilydale Bush Nursing Hospital and spent much of his early childhood in Mt Evelyn. Following enlistment in 1964, he was posted to the Rockbank Signals Receiving Station. Though, soon after in 1966 he was successful in being selected for the Special Air Service regiment in Perth and went on to serve as a rifleman in Vietnam from March 1967 to February 1968. As he lives in Western Australia and is the National Secretary of the Australian Special Air Service Association, Charlie was unable to attend the unveiling of his name on Saturday, but his niece, Shae Sandri who lives locally was honoured to unveil the name in his stead. “We just wanted to say on behalf of ‘Uncle Charlie’ as we know him, that he obviously

would have loved to have been here today, but he was really chuffed to have been reconnected with the Mount Evelyn RSL and was really pleased with the acknowledgement.” Anthony McAleer said they regularly had to add new names to the honour board, but that it was an honour to recognise those that had gone unnoticed and that it was ‘better late than never’. “Because Charles left the area before he enlisted we were unaware until recently of his service in Vietnam and his connection to Mt Evelyn, which is why we missed out putting his name on the honour board, however it gives the Mount Evelyn RSL great pleasure to unveil his name on the honour board,” he said. “It was nice to pay tribute to him and honour him locally; it’s good for the community to know how many residents have served in Vietnam.”

A new name was added to the Mount Evelyn honour board, following the Remembrance Day service on Saturday 11 October at the Mt Evelyn War Memorial Gardens. Hundreds of Mt Evelyn residents came out to pay their respects and commemorate the sacrifices made by servicemen and women and among them was Shae Sandri, from Mooroolbark, whose Uncle, Charles Stewart was being added to the Mount Evelyn honour roll. Anthony McAleer, Mt Evelyn RSL secretary said that Charles Stewart had flown ‘under the radar’ until recently, when the RSL discovered an interview that showed Mr Stewart had lived in Mount Evelyn prior to enlisting in the army in 1964.

Ironically the house he grew up in and spent much of his life at was the exact same location where the RSL building now resides - 49 Birmingham Road. “The criteria for the honour board was that a person was either born or lived in that town before they enlisted,” Mr McAleer said “Recently we discovered, via the internet we found an interview with Charlie talking about growing up in Mount Evelyn. “Just accidentally stumbled across it and he fitted the criteria so his name should be on there. “Iain Townsley, our piper, and who is also with the SAS association knew him personally so within 24 hours we were in email contact with Charlie, and he sent us all the details about his life in Mount Evelyn and his service.”

Nominate your community hero By Peter Douglas Know someone who should be recognised for what they do in the community? The 2018 Yarra Ranges Australia Day Awards are an opportunity for the community to celebrate the achievements and contribution of residents. If you know someone who has inspired you, nominate them for one of the below categories by Thursday 7 December. Yarra Ranges Council mayor Noel Cliff is encouraging everyone in the community to nominate a community member whose contribution to the Yarra Ranges has made a positive impact. “Let’s celebrate those who work hard to make a difference in our community,” Cr Cliff said. “Think about the people in our community who inspire and challenge us to do more ourselves. “The Australia Day Awards provide us with the chance to say thank you for the efforts and achievements of those around us.” This year’s Citizen of the Year award went to Dr Doseena Fergie, an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander woman dedicated to closing the gap in the Yarra Ranges. Dr Fergie has been a leader within the local Indigenous community and a driving force behind the ongoing success of the Healesville Indigenous Community Services Association (HICSA). Also among the 2017 recipients were Chum Creek Primary School, Coldstream strawberry farmer Sam Violi, Healesville school support volunteer, Colin Pierrehumbers, and Tome Steele, a Dixons Creek CFA volunteer with decades of volunteer service in many other forums. The award ceremony will be held on Friday

In brief Police appeal for witnesses Lilydale detectives are still appealing for witnesses who may have seen an incident between two vehicles on Monbulk-Emerald Road on Monday 23 October about 1.20pm, which resulted in a woman being airlifted to hospital. Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit’s Detective Senior Constable Danielle Fleming said police were investigating an altercation between the driver of a Toyota Prado towing a horse float and the driver of a grey ASX Mitsubishi SUV. Police report that the incident commenced on Belgrave-Gembrook Road and continued through Emerald, and then along Emerald-Monbulk Road concluding around Stewart Road. She said a woman was then struck by one of the cars, though it is unclear how she came to be hit. The woman was flown to The Alfred hospital in a serious condition with suspected fractures, abrasions and bruising, and is now in a stable condition and recovering from her injuries. Both drivers are co-operating with police and assisting with the investigation. Anyone with information is urged to contact Senior Constable Danielle Fleming at Yarra Ranges CIU on 9739 2300.

Upwey running star Melissa Duncan has made significant inroads towards overcoming her Rio Olympics heartbreak. After an ankle injury forced her to withdraw from the 2016 Games, just weeks before her pet 1500m event, Duncan, 27, completed her comeback race in the Noosa Bolt, on the Sunshine Coast, on Saturday 4 November. True to form, Duncan took out first place in the 5km event, clocking 16:21 on a hairpin circuit, beating home Australian representative Eloise Wellings. The result represented much more than another victory, though, after Duncan was left unable to walk for four months after foot surgery last year. Duncan told the ‘Sunshine Coast Daily’ after her win there was no hiding her Rio disappointment, although it had made her a “tougher athlete”. “I had my bags packed (and) my uniform kitted out and I never got to see any of it,” she said. “It was absolutely the most heartbreaking thing that I’ve had to experience. “But ... it puts everything into perspective. I enjoy every second of it (running) and I believe it has made me a tougher athlete because nothing can be as painful as having to sit back and watch

your spot be replaced in the Olympics.” Her place in the team eventually went to training partner, Zoe Buckman. Buckman reached the semi-final and finished a respectable ninth. Meanwhile, Duncan has expressed her desire to compete in next year’s Commonwealth Games at the Gold Coast. While she has a reputation as one of Australia’s best runners over that distance, she will turn her attention to 5000m, although is not discounting a tilt at the 1500m, as well. To qualify for the Commonwealth Games in the 5000m, Duncan will need to record a time of 15:20s, so the Noosa result is a great start, although there is some work to go yet. Before her foot injury last year, Duncan had been aiming not only to represent her country, but take it up to the best in the world. To put her times in perspective for the 1500m, at the 2012 London Olympics, the winning time for the event was 4:10.74 (the first two placegetters were later banned over failing drug tests), while Duncan - albeit in different conditions posted a 4:05.56 qualifier in 2015. Australia’s Olympic selectors had enough faith in her ability that her selection came without her running the 1500m Olympic trial in Sydney.

What on Earth? As daily reports of ordinary and extraordinary Australians taking direct action hit mainstream and social media, one must ask what on Earth is going on? Well, this is what is going on. Australians have always prided themselves on a sense of a fair go and decency; and ordinary Aussies feel compelled to take greater action as almost weekly rallies by various groups, letters to MPs, and petitions with tens of thousands of signatures fall on deaf ears. Our government and indeed the opposition appear to be morally bereft, as they play politics with people’s lives. And before anyone calls the aforementioned activists feral greenies or some such pejorative expression, I can tell you that those involved represent a broad range of Australians. The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) has reported a humanitarian crisis is unfolding on Manus Island. This has been backed up by the Moss Report

Children, teenagers and families in the Dandenong Ranges have a new court to use year round, after the completion of the Kalorama Multipurpose Court. The project involved constructing recreation spaces adjacent to the existing playspace at the Kalorama Recreation Reserve, which was constructed last year. The finished multipurpose court comprises a half basketball court, half futsal court with a high fence, rebound wall, skateable surfaces including transition box, slider boxes and rail and seating. Cr Tony Stevenson said the finished project would give children a place to get active in the warmer months. “We know one of the biggest barriers when encouraging children and teenagers to head outside is not having places to go close to home,” Cr

Stevenson said. “The multipurpose court at Kalorama Recreation Reserve gives families a high-quality and entertaining place to spend the day, with sports facilities for teenagers and adults and a nearby playspace for younger children. “One of our goals in council’s Health and Well-being Strategy is that people are physically active, and having spaces like this in the Dandenongs will certainly help to make that happen.” The reserve, located at 1190-1196 Mount Dandenong Tourist Road, includes sports grounds for football and cricket, with toilets and barbecue pavilion nearby. The multipurpose court facility was funded and built by Yarra Ranges Council through its Capital Works Program.

who have worked there. Most reading this will be aware that Australians, good friends of the people of Papua New Guinea, find it necessary to live in secure compounds when working there, for reasons of safety. While the refugees (and yes, most of the men have been found to be genuine refugees by the Department of Immigration), have been advised that they will be safe in the new accommodation, who could blame them for believing otherwise in view of their past experience? So the crisis continues to unfold hour by hour, with use of force by military personal imminent. Therefore, I hope this brief precis will help to explain for those not over the issues why ordinary and extraordinary Australians are saying enough is enough, and responding to the SOS from Manus Island. #CloseTheCampsHumanely #Justice4Refugees. under our watch. And now for the immediate crisis. After more than four years incarcerated, at a cost of billions of taxpayers’ dollars as part of Australia’s illegal offshore detention regime (six young men have died on Manus Island alone in horrific circumstances), the call to #CloseTheCamps has been heeded by the Australian Government ... in the most inhumane way possible. All services including food, water and power have been cut off to the remaining 600 men in the original camp on Manus Island, and they are resisting being forced to move to another centre, due to fears for their lives. Already, locals, who do not want these men on their small and poor island, have attacked the men with machetes and other weapons when in the community. There is even mainstream media footage of the local armed forces firing live ammunition at the refugees. Children and families are still incarcerated on Nauru, others on Christmas Island, and the psychological and physical damage suffered, particularly by the children, is likely to have lifelong impact, according to various psychologists

and the Nauru Files. The situation is being regularly reported on by the BBC, New York Times, Al Jazeera, and other lower-profile media outlets. As an Australian, I find this highly embarrassing and shameful. Should anyone reading this doubt the details, the documentaries Chasing Asylum, and Chauka Please Tell Us The Time, make for riveting but highly confronting viewing. The boats have ‘not’ been stopped, although government restriction has limited journalistic access. Also, the number of deaths at sea due to boat turn-backs is unknown for the same reason. Certainly, people are dying outside of our line of vision. Australia is a signatory to the UN Refugee Convention of 1951. It is ‘not’ illegal to flee danger and persecution, and Australia continues to breach its human rights obligations under this convention. International conventions on the rights of children, among others, are also being flaunted. Children have and continue to suffer terribly

Rally for the parkland By Peter Douglas The Olinda Parkland group is preparing to take their message to the masses, with a staged rally planned for Saturday 18 November at 10am. With posters in hand, group members are planning to descend on the office of Monbulk MP James Merlino, to raise awareness about the future of the former Olinda Golf Course. The group fears plans to develop the popular site into a sports precinct have been completed behind closed doors. Group member Sandra Stephen said they wanted the public to be informed. “This is a rallying call ... people are stunned and cross at not being consulted. We want to explain to people what’s going on, so they can make up their own mind,” she said. “People are angry. It’s not democratic, not very fair.” Ms Stephen said during the initial public meeting about the future of the site, many people offered suggestions, but most wanted the site to remain untouched. “You can see why people are so passionate. This is one of the only places left in the Dandenong Ranges where you can experience absolute and utter solitude,” she said. “We want to preserve that land for perpetuity and we feel this is our responsibility.” The Olinda Parkland group formed not long after that meeting. The group believes plans are well underway to develop the site to include a football oval, basketball courts and multiple car parks. They believe this will include digging out part of the site and the removal of trees. Meanwhile, Member for Eastern Victoria Region, Ed O’Donohue, has leant his support to their cause, recently raising the issue in Victorian Parliament. “The action I seek is that the Minister put on hold implementation of the Olinda precinct master plan until there is further community consultation about the implementation of the (Olinda precinct) master plan,” he told parliament. “The beautiful Dandenong Ranges has one of the jewels in the crown in the precinct in Olinda.”

Fears on too many birds By Peter Douglas

Sandra Stephen has been busy preparing and creating posters for the rally. 174990 Mr O’Donohue said Parks Victoria had undertaken a process to examine the site’s best use, but questioned consultation processes. “The master plan was published in May this year. To the shock of the local community, a very large fence was soon erected along the new boundary of the Rhodoendron Gardens on part of the former golf course land,” he told parliament. “This has led to a great deal of concern about what may be coming next.”

Fruit Fly - Be prepared It’s on the Yarra Valley doorstep

Upwey resident Garry Jones is urging Yarra Ranges Council to consider significantly tightening limitations on the number of pet birds that can be kept on any single property. As the consultation period for council’s local laws review finishes, Mr Jones said council needed to take note of nearby councils such as Knox, Monash and Maroondah, which all have much stricter guidelines in this area. Monash laws specify only 10 birds can be kept on any single property, with Maroondah 20. Knox only permits five large birds, with pigeons falling into that category. In Yarra Ranges, no permit is required for any number less than, or up to, 100 birds. Mr Jones said he submitted his suggestion as part of the review, while also recently objecting to a proposal from a neighbour seeking to construct three pigeon lofts at a residence in Hughes Street, Upwey. Mr Jones was one of 39 objectors to the proposal, which council deferred at its Tuesday 24 October meeting, citing a lack of information. He said as many as 80 pigeons were at the Hughes Street address, with the lofts potentially taking that number to 140 birds. “Compared with most, if not all other Melbourne councils, which have stringent limits on bird numbers, Yarra Ranges does not have limits on birds in its local laws,” Mr Jones said. “We have put in a submission online to the local laws review ... but this is important enough that all local residents should be made aware of it and urged to raise it with their councillor, so that it does not disappear into the bureaucracy and their too-hard basket.”

Mr Jones noted that Yarra Ranges Council placed more defined limitations on dogs and cats (two each) and prohibited other species of ‘noisy birds’. “Other councils take a variety of approaches, with a distinction between large and small birds, and, in the case of Monash and some others, between racing pigeons (quite small) and other pigeons (much larger),” he said. “It would be to most people’s benefit if the provisions in the Monash local law were cut and pasted into the Yarra Ranges local law.” Speaking at the October council meeting, Mr Jones joined fellow neighbour Susan Sypkens in expressing that the pigeon loft proposal was inappropriate for the neighbourhood. Their issues included odour, and the potential for increased vermin and risk of psittacosis, a potentially fatal bacteria passed on to humans from birds. “For some months, I’ve been enduring increasing unpleasant fecal odours from eight or more pigeons currently kept in makeshift sheds,” Ms Sypkens told council. “When wind blows from that direction, it means I can’t even open windows on the affected side of my house. There’s also a risk of pulmonary disease for me and my young grandchildren. “This is intensive poultry farming, not just hobby pets. If this application is approved, it sets a precedent to keep a large number of livestock in residential zones.” However, applicant Chris Shannon maintained smells were not the issue. “Personally, I don’t believe there’s an odour. If anyone wants to come around and have a look, a smell ... there’s no odour,” he told council.

PICTURE PERFECT COTTAGES SET on 27 acres of useable land that offers the perfect mix of natural bush and cleared pastures, ‘Cockatoo Cottages’ will provide you with the ability to live the country lifestyle you crave while earning a living from the two self-contained cottages that are currently operating as a bed and breakfast accommodation. Both cottages are situated well away from the main house to ensure your privacy. The cottages each have a spa bath and are tastefully decorated, offering character and charm with high ceilings and a wonderful picturesque outlook. The ranch-style family home is grand in proportions with high ceilings, polished floor boards, ornate cornices, colonial architraves, and has a huge open-plan living area that adjoins the timber kitchen which has loads of bench space and stainless steel appliances including dishwasher. The rumpus room is at the opposite end of the home, and is ideal as a pool room,

theatre room or oversized children’s play room. There are four big bedrooms, the master is serviced by a full ensuite, huge walk-in robe and sitting room. There is also a separate entrance which can be used as a reception area for the cottages. The wide shady verandah is a wonderful place to entertain your friends and family or just settle back and enjoy the natural beauty that surrounds. The over height garage provides plenty of options for vehicles and ‘toys’ as does the additional double carport, and there is a further machinery/boat storage facility. All of this within easy access to everything that the Yarra Valley has to offer and just moments to the highly regarded Cockatoo Primary School and Emerald Secondary College as well as private school options. It’s a truly unique opportunity for you to pursue your dream of country living while generating a good income.

BANKING ON, FOR COMMUNITY WHAT would our townships look like without a community bank? Dandenong Ranges, November 2017: The Dandenong Ranges Community Bank® Group has just celebrated 19 years in Upwey, and is looking forward to next year’s 20th Birthday celebrations. As the first urban Community Bank® branch in Australia to open, the Upwey Branch is proud of its achievements. Earlier this year, it celebrated $400 million in banking business milestone and has given $4.3 million back to its local communities. This prompts the question - what would Upwey and other towns in the Dandenong Ranges look like if it didn’t have a community bank? In 1998 the Commonwealth bank closed its Upwey branch to leave the town without a bank. This was probably the best thing to happen to Upwey because Upwey and District Community Bank® opened only a few months later, and has been contributing back to its community ever since. Hundreds of community groups have benefited from small to large sponsorships and grants from the bank. Some examples of this are: * 2002 - Upwey South Tennis Courts $3000 for new sprinkler system * 2003 - Upwey Belgrave RSL - $1157 for replacement of Flagpole at Belgrave Memorial * 2007 - Upwey Tecoma Football Netball Club - $4000 - Oval lighting * 2008 - Tecoma Primary School - $1050 - Giant Chess Pieces * 2007-2017 - Upwey Billy Cart Race $30,000 - race sponsorship * 2017 - Upwey Tecoma Community Recreation and Sporting Hub - $250,000 Chairman, John Waters believes that if you are banking with your local community bank, then you are doing your part for your community. The current “Be the Change”

"Would we be looking at a different businesses landscape - would it look the same today? Upwey is currently thriving, and I have no doubt that this is, in part, due to having a bank that services the banking needs of its community as well as putting back in via grants and sponsorships,” Mr Waters said. “Our company expanded to Belgrave and Cockatoo in 2005, and these two branches provide much-needed services to those townships and the surrounding areas. Our

advertising campaign being conducted by the Bendigo Bank, truly demonstrates the impact Community Banking has on a local community. “I have been a volunteer director of the company for three years and I have seen firsthand how this banking model benefits the community we live in. I am proud to say that the company is an integral part of the Upwey community. What would Upwey look like if the community bank had not come to town?

Moving tribute for Fallen By Peter Douglas Emerald residents turned out in force to pay their respects on Remembrance Day on Saturday 11 November. Amid a sea of poppies and a host of dignitaries - including La Trobe MP Jason Wood and Cardinia Shire Mayor Brett Owen- Emerald RSL President Peter Maloney led a moving tribute. Emerald Primary School, Emerald Guides and many other community representatives were onhand for the day, too. Mr Maloney encouraged all to join in the occasion. “Today, we remember and pay our respects. We remember all Australians who lay down their lives for our country,” Mr Maloney said. “We remember those we lost in conflict. We remember the Emerald men and women who didn’t get back to their beautiful town.” Attendees arrived with poppies in hand and ready to lay wreaths, with Emerald RSL member Alan Ashmore delivering a heartfelt keynote speech. “I don’t know about you, but I find it difficult to comprehend the Australian loss of life on the battlefield in World War I and II,” Mr Ashmore said. “Six weeks ago, I was at the MCG for the AFL grand final ... picture that stadium full, the loss of life was greater than that crowd.” Mr Ashmore also shone a light on the troubles modern-day veterans face on a daily basis. He noted many veterans of conflicts such as in Afghanistan are taking their life at a greater rate than any generations of veterans before them. “The annual suicide rate of post 1990 veterans is seven times higher ... so what’s the cause and why,” Mr Ashmore said. “The last one was just last Tuesday.” Mr Ashmore said more support was urgently needed for modern-day veterans, both in regards to their mental health and their transition to civilian life. After the speech and ceremony, guests were invited to tour Emerald’s Avenue of Honour, which tells the story of Emerald’s 32 soldiers who lost their lives in World War I.

House of art reflects on costs of immersion By Derek Schlennstedt Mirror mirror on the wall, which house in Ferntree Gully is the fairest of them all. An art installation by three Swinburne artists has seen a domestic house on Dorset Road, Ferntree Gully transformed into a stunning art display which features mirrors as its main drawcard. The home at 27 Dorset Road has been converted, with art galleries on the inside and mirrored tiles covering the exterior - all part of the Knox Council’s Immerse art festival. Though, the home is more than just a pretty display and the feature conveys a deeper message which focuses on tackling the house affordability debate. Artist Roh Sing, one of three artists from Swinburne University, said the outside was designed to promote conversation around housing affordability in the Knox municipality. Roh said that the ‘Untitled House’ - the name of the private home on Dorset Street - included over 1800 tiles and that the team spent three weeks ‘working around the clock’ to finish it. “Housing affordability - that was the idea with the mirror facade,” he said. With some of the photos you get reflections of the sky and it gives the impression that the building is disappearing to some extent, and that was a symbol for the Australian suburban dream disappearing and becoming out of reach for many of us due to housing affordability.” Inside, the three-bedroom house has five interactive art exhibits, each pertaining to different aspects of the central and pervading theme of ‘what is home’? “The house presented us with an opportunity to create conversations around contemporary art

Swinburne University artists Roh Singh, Larry Parkinson and Morganna Magee have transformed a normal domestic house in Ferntree Gully into a fascinating art piece that features over 1800 mirrors and tackles the housing affordability debate. 174892 and concepts of home and place,” Roh said. One of those exhibits draws upon refugees fleeing from their homelands. The Dorset Road property was donated to the art project by a private owner and the property is believed to be developed when the festival is finished. Across the road, in the reflection of the mirrors, another sign of development is taking place with

several units being built - an apt reflection of the changing housing market, suggested the artists. In the window of ‘Untitled House’ a neon tent sign signifies that transition from permanent home to ‘transitory’ living, Roh said. “The tent symbol ties into that, it’s a transitory home, it’s non-permanent ... it’s something you have to pick up and leave ... we are losing that suburban block that we used to have.”

The festival is across the entire Knox municipality with ‘Untitled House’ only one of the many features. The aim of the festival is to bring art to the forefront, by putting it on display in public areas where people work and live. The festival will run from 11 November to 11 December and bookings to see the inside spaces of Untitled House can be made at stickytickets. com.au

Sun’s out, tons out FTGDCA Play on day one of Round 5 got underway in bright sunshine. In most cases, the batsmen held the upper hand with five centuries across nine games. At Batterham Park, Scott Vozzo’s 108 and Jayden Turcinovic’s 74 not out helped The Basin post 4/277 against Upper Ferntree Gully. The King’s bowlers toiled hard to make inroads but the Bears held firm control. With both teams on 18 points, the winner will take a handy step up. The Kings have the batting line-up to chase the score, although The Basin has the bowling smarts to defend the total. Knox Gardens made 228 on the back of Joe Morsello’s unbeaten 108. Mountain Gate’s Luke Turner returned the figures of 3/35 with the Gators hosting the Falcons at HV Jones. The Falcons may regret the opportunity missed to capitalise on Morsello’s efforts. Clearly Cam Wheeler (5/31) and Dave Carmen (3/26) failed to read today’s script as the Upwey attack dismissed Belgrave for 72. In reply, the Tigers are 3/158 with Matt Mulcahy 70 not out. Wheeler’s 32 made sure his name will be in the votes. Eildon Park’s 253 may be enough to deny Johnson Park their first win of the season. The Panthers were well served by David Smyth (57) and Rasika Tennekumbura (40) while Ben Stallworthy’s 3/61 kept the Sharks in the game. Given Knoxfield’s form with the bat, Ferntree Gully’s 214 may be a little light as the Blues look to bridge the gap between fourth and first position.

Jayden Bradbury top scored for the Blues with 67 and enjoyed a 119-run partnership with Harrison Brown (55), before Ferntree Gully lost their last eight wickets for 90 runs. Matthew Plumridge took the bowling honours for the Knights with three wickets from his 13 overs. In DeCoite Shield, Lysterfield duo Anthony Brolic (154) and Daniel Forster-Jennings (116) helped the Beavers amass 5/357 against Rowville, while Jason Fraser made 113 of Monbulk’s 6/277 against Knoxfield. Aaron Grenda fell four runs short of his maiden century as St John’s Tecoma set South Belgrave a total of 280 for victory. In the final game, Ferntree Gully Footballers dismissed Olinda for 160 with Peter Dean making 47. A century to Aaron West helped a FTGDCA invitational XI to 5/170 as they took on the Ringwood Rams in a Twenty20 on Wednesday night, unfortunately, a devastating knock by David Johnson for the Rams stole the game away. The warmth brought out the competitive spirit in the Yarra Ranges athletes with some exceptional performances, many PBs and lots of amazing smiles. After a very hectic start to the season, the seniors had a weekend off to prepare for next Saturday when the club hosts a round of AV Shield at its Mount Evelyn venue. The club is looking forward to welcoming athletes from throughout Victoria to its fantastic facilities for an afternoon of interclub athletics. There might even be a few Olympians present. Congratulations to Georgia Laven and Tayleb Willis, who secured election in the Team Vic Athletics team with their gold medal winning performances at the Victorian All Schools track and Field Championships last weekend. Georgia and Tayleb will compete at the Australian All Schools Athletics Championships in Adelaide in early December. If you are interested in com-
