Healesville was buzzing on the weekend with hundreds of visitors and locals lining up for their wrist-band passport to more than 70 events as part of the 2017 Healesville Music Festival. Members of the Yarra Valley Musicians’ Collective and the Healesville Music Festival Committee welcomed Yarra Ranges Councillor Fiona McAllister to officially open the festival on Friday night with opening performances by Sarah Carroll, Scott Cook and The Royal High Jinx setting the pace for a weekend of outstanding entertainment. One of the markers of the festival’s growing success was the increasing number of visitors pitching their tents and hauling caravans to the Healesville Racecourse to stay the whole weekend. Music Festival chair Bob Willis said numbers had tripled from last year. “You want to be able to camp on site where the festival is happening,” he said, adding that the Healesville Amateur Racing Club committee had provided a fantastic venue not only for the campers, but for the market on the Saturday and the range of music events over the three days. The racecourse was one of four venues including The Memo, The RSL, the Uniting Church which saw events ranging from a poet’s breakfast and bush dance to workshops and feature local, national and international artists. Street artists brought an upbeat vibe and colour to the main street with performances including Marysville’s Pans on Fire and Healesville’s Strings and Things, and to other venues including local cafes and Healesville High School where U3A presented a sell-out concert. Pushed to nominate some ‘stand out’ performances, Mr Willis said among some of the big names that really pulled the crowds were Opal Ocean and African band Yusupha Ngum and The Affia Band, and the Northern Folk who closed the festival on Sunday. He said the involvement of the Little Yarra (Steiner School) Ensemble and Healesville High School Saxophone Ensemble was a magical display of young talent. Mr Willis said the task ahead for the Yarra Valley Musicians’ Collective was to continue to build on the success of the festival with a short break before planning for the 2018 festival begins. The YVMC is looking for new people to join the 2018 festival committee and particularly keen to build the skills base with people with particular skills such as volunteer co-ordination, team leadership and MC skills. Mr Willis thanked a number of long-standing committee members who stepped down this year, saying they had put in a great effort over a number of years and had set a high bar. Continued on page 3

Seniors sound By Kath Gannaway A Seniors Week activity that brought The Sound of Music to the hills around Warburton has put the local Seniors Club on the map as a ‘can do’ club. More than 240 people attended the Sound of Music Tribute Show by actors Mark and Stephanie Renouf on 26 October ... and they left calling for an encore next year! Warburton Seniors Club president Barbara Mutsaers said they knew they were on a hit when their first show sold out, so they rallied the team and booked in a second show, which also sold out quickly. The Renoufs sang all the favourite Sound of Music songs, with puppets and audience participation adding to the fun. “We had people from all around Yarra Ranges and from as far away as Toorak, Tullamarine, Brighton and Hawthorn who came up to Warburton for the show,” Mrs Mutsaers said.

Time to Sparkle! Get into the Christmas spirit with our range of Christmas decorations including lots of lights, trees, baubles, tinsel, ornaments, and much more.

“I think it has brought more people in to the club and they now know what we do; that we can put big shows on and that we can cater for them.” Yarra Ranges Council funded the event as part of the council’s Seniors Week activities and Mrs Mutsaers said the club was very grateful especially to Janette Scott, council’s volunteer support officer who worked with the club to present the event. “It’s a lot of work, and we’re all very tired, but very happy that everyone enjoyed it and that it was such a great success.” Never a club to rest on its laurels, plans are already being hatched for a similar event next year. Until then, Warburton Senior Citizens welcome guests every week to their Thursday lunch, where a two-course meal is on the menue for $13, served with an optional side of billiards and card games, and to their 50 Shades of Grey Bingo Centre. Wreaths, poppies, glor y By Kath Gannaway At cenotaphs and memorials across the Yarra Valley, at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, people fell silent in memory of those who have died in war. In the lead-up to the centenary of the WWI armistice next year, guest speakers at RSL subbranch memorials at Healesville, Marysville, Yarra Glen, Yarra Junction, Wandin Yallock and Lilydale reflected on significant 1917 battles including Beersheeba and Bullecourt, and the on the 75th year anniversaries of El Elamein and the Kokoda Campaign in WWII. The Remembrance ceremonies were marked with the laying of wreaths, the placing of poppies, and the reading of the poem ‘In Flanders Fields’ and the reply ‘We Shall Keep the Faith’. As with Anzac Day, the involvement of schools and community groups recognised the impact of the loss of thousands of young lives on small, rural communities throughout Australia’s history of involvement in war.

Mr Willis also thanked the 70 volunteers who took on various roles over the weekend, and the sponsors, saying without them the festival could not happen. “We will be looking to include even more volunteers next year, and would also be very happy to hear from any businesses or community organisations who would like to be involved,” he said. The festival is held on the weekend following the Melbourne Cup each year. If you would like to be involved, Mr Willis can be contacted on 0413 383 942. Change your environment Healthy

living Tim Howden

Paediatric Naturopath – Healesville The capacity to improve your health by modulating your environment can be profound. Many people experience health benefits when they change their diet and adjust their lifestyle. Encouraging this is a cornerstone in the practice of natural medicine. I’d like to share with you why this is so impor-

tant and how to go about it so you feel empowered in taking control of how your health evolves. The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare define arthritis, asthma, cardiovascular disease (CVD), diabesity, mental health and cancer as the top chronic health conditions affecting Australians today. As a clinician myself, I would add that beneath all chronic disease lie physiological imbalances that are driven by environmental factors. When we change the environment, we change the outcome. Our well-being is affected by where we live and work, what we eat and how much mental, emotional, creative and physical output we have. Pesticide exposure and off-gassing from plastic and petrochemical based products will adversely affect your health. This has been well documented from Rachael

Carson’s Silent Spring (1962) to Slow Death by Rubber Duck by Smith and Lourie (2010). These are known toxins and endocrine disruptors and have been linked to the top chronic diseases. Similarly, a diet high in processed ingredients and low in whole food is linked to CVD disease, diabesity and cancer. It’s not ‘bad luck’ that gets you sick, it’s that the environment is perfect for disease to flourish and take hold. Here are some general tips that will support a healthy environment and allow your body to develop and maintain an internal equilibrium that is responsive, adaptive and promotive of good health. Drink pure filtered water - to avoid consuming pesticide and plastic residues as other toxins like heavy metals. Eat seasonal organic whole food - all colours

of the rainbow with a minimum of 15 different foods daily. Fast every night, after dinner until breakfast. Ten to 12 hours of fasting helps key detoxification pathways to work more effectively. Look after your digestive system with a fibrerich diet, small amounts of fermented foods, healthy oils, adequate protein and avoid unnecessary (harmful) medications. Exercise intentionally ... we were born to move. It’s excellent for mental health, energy production and metabolic health. Laugh ... love ... and live ... with a curious and open mindset. Have an awesome festive season and I’ll see you in the new year. Remember, the disease is nothing without the environment to support it.

Patricio and the wombat made some memories By Kath Gannaway

Yarra Valley Racing will receive more than $68,000 in jointly funded initiatives supported by the Andrews Labor Government that will go towards a revamp of the harness owners room facilities. Picture: GREG CARRICK

Race for cash By Derek Schlennstedt Yarra Valley Racing is set to launch a new social club package and revamp its harness owners’ room facilities, thanks to more than $68,000 in jointly funded initiatives supported by the Andrews Labor Government. The social club package will bring together locals and visitors to the Yarra Valley, with more than 1200 people expected to flock to the track for three days of racing between November 2017 and February 2018. The funding also supports an upgrade to the owners’ room facilities, with the installation of new timber panelling, air-conditioning and whitegoods, as well as electrical and plumbing improvements. The Labor Government is contributing more than $33,000 from its Victorian Industry Racing Fund to support both initiatives. The club is also providing more than $27,000 for the two projects, while the Victorian Harness Racing Sports Club and Harness Racing Victoria are jointly contributing almost $7000 towards the owners’ room refurbishment. “Country racing events play an important role in boosting the economy and attracting tourists to

our regional cities and towns,” Minister for Racing Martin Pakula said. “Owners are an integral part of the racing industry and the upgraded rooms at Yarra Valley will ensure this venue remains one of the top country harness racing facilities in the state.” Since 2014, the Labor Government has contributed more than $300,000 for eight infrastructure projects and five harness racing events at the Yarra Valley. The racing industry in outer Melbourne generates more than $375 million for the Victorian economy annually and helps sustain more than 3720 full-time equivalent jobs in the region. “We’re grateful for the funding we’ve received from the Victorian Government supporting our social club package and the revamp of our harness owners’ area,” Yarra Valley Racing CEO Brett Shambrook said. “It’s gearing up to be a big three months at Yarra Valley Racing and we encourage all Victorians to come and enjoy country harness racing at its finest.” Yarra Valley Racing also celebrated 70 years of harness racing at its ‘Trots Tradition’ race day on Tuesday, 7 November.

Patricio Soares will have a lot of memories from his time in Australia, and patting a wombat at Healesville Sanctuary will be one of the good ones. Patricio, 9, was brought to Melbourne from Timor Leste by the Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children (ROMAC) program for life-saving surgery at the Royal Children’s Hospital. The surgery was needed to remove a tumour from the right side of his chest that had been identified as malignant and requiring four courses of chemotherapy. It’s a tough gig for a child, and for Patricio’s father Norberto who arrived together late on 17 September and went immediately to the hospital where the operation was performed the next morning. After three weeks recovering in hospital where he was cared for by his Rotarian host parent Dianne Sides and visited by Rotarians and members of the Australian and Timor Community, Patricio was discharged early in October and commenced chemotherapy treatment. Healesville Rotarian, Graeme Chester, said as Patricio had become stronger, he had been given the opportunity to have different experiences, including a visit to Healesville Sanctuary with host parents Kay and Phil Leck.

A warm and fuzzy moment for Patricio, his dad Norberto and little Gem the wombat. Mr Chester, a volunteer guide at the Sanctuary, said the Sanctuary had been very supportive of ROMAC over the years. Patricio and Norberto enjoyed a day away from the more

serious side of life to spend a day in the bush. “They thoroughly enjoyed the outing, and in particular the pat and play session with ninemonth-old Gem the wombat,” Mr Chester said.

Leos’ future vision

Flood overlay changes soon

By Effie Caloutas

Changes to flooding overlays have been proposed by Melbourne Water for parts of the Yarra Ranges which are susceptible to flooding. To help determine these locations residents are being invited to make a formal submission on the new flooding overlay and mapping based on Melbourne Water’s flood study. These submissions will be considered at a council meeting next year. Director of Social and Economic Development Ali Wastie said the amendment proposed to update flood overlay mapping would help better reflect current conditions. “Since the planning controls were introduced, Melbourne Water has developed more advanced flood mapping and modelling,” Ms Wastie said. Approximately 3500 relevant landowners have been notified about the changes and Melbourne Water will assist council to meet affected residents to explain the proposed changes. Those changes proposed by Melbourne Water affect two overlay controls - the Land Subject to Inundation Overaly (LSIO) and the Special Building Overlay (SBO), which were introduced into the Yarra Ranges Planning Scheme in the early 2000s. The overlays are in place to ensure that affected land is developed in a way that reduces the potential for flooding and minimises the risk of damage to properties. The Special Building Overlay (SBO) addresss flooding caused by severe storms while the the Land Subject to Inundation Overlay (LSIO) relates to flooding caused by overflowing rivers and creeks. LSIO is proposed for the Little Yarra River upstream of Yarra Junction to Powelltown, and upstream of Warburton to Reefton; as well as areas in Lilydale in the Olinda Creek catchment. If you would like further technical information about the overlays, for example flooding impacts or flood levels, please contact Melbourne Water on 9679 7517 or land.development@melbournewater.com.au.

Jesse believes that being a part of the Leo Club has enabled him to grow as an individual, and invites other Healesville High School students to get involved. “Public speaking is a big thing I developed especially talking to a group throughout the year,” he said.

“I was really scared about public speaking prior to being a Leo, but being a part of the community group has enabled me to develop confidence in talking in front of a large group of people. “I recommend other students get involved in the Leo group because it is good opportunity to gain more skills in the leadership space, and help out other people in need."

The Leo Club of Healesville High School has been taking part in the Lions International Glasses Collection Project this year. Formed in May, The Leo Club of Healesville is taking part in this ongoing project to collect and send spectacles to those less fortunate. Treasurer of the Lions Club in Healesville, Elaine Dossor, says any money raised in the spectacle project will only help the school and the community. The Leo Club has placed two boxes at the high school and 10 boxes around Healesville including at Coles, Commonwealth Bank and doctors’ surgeries to collect spectacles. The spectacles go to Queensland where they are checked and sent internationally. Leo Club Advisor Lesley Grigg believes the ongoing projects, including Trauma Teddies and Lions Christmas Cakes, help in the achievements of the Leos themselves. “Projects such as the spectacle collection bring a positive outcome to our Leos who through club membership will enhance their social skills and give them an understanding of the needs of the community," she said. The Leo Club is also participating in ‘The Wishing Tree’ at the Ezy Wear Women’s Clothing Shop, which provides a chance for people to write their Christmas wishes on a ticket to be hung on a tree for a gold coin donation. The Leos will also be promoting the major project at Healesville High School and the Lions Den Shop. The Leo Club meets regularly to discuss ongoing projects and to work towards creating new projects revolving around the local community. Leo Club member and Healesville High School student Jesse Strazenbach says that he is proud of being a part of the projects by the local community group that took place this year. “It means a lot to me. I want to help people in need,” he said. “I feel really proud about being a part of it this year. It is about helping other people in need and the community.”

Triumph of the art The final weekend of the Yarra Valley Open Studios on 11 and 12 November showcasing the work of artists along the Warburton Highway was another huge success for Yarra Valley Arts. Hundreds of visitors, including artists from across Yarra Ranges flocked to the studios of 16 artists from Gruyere through to East Warburton. The Warburton Highway artists’ weekend built on the success of the previous weekends, where artists along the Maroondah Highway opened in September and along the Melba Highway in October. Bill Proctor of Launching Place said spreading the event over three months had been a huge success, with more visitors on the Saturday than for

the entire weekend in previous years. “It also gives artists from other areas a chance to visit, and for us to visit them,” he said. “It helps strengthen the network and you can see where people work and what they are doing.” Visitors to the Hoddles Creek studios of Bev Hardidge and Graeme Hardidge experienced two very different artforms, with Bev’s colourful works surrounding her in her rustic studio while Graeme’s monochrome anvil struck a different chord as he turned old car parts into quirky garden ornaments. Both agreed the three-weekend format is a winner, bringing more people, particularly to those artists who are a little off the highways. Visit www.yarravalleyarts.org.au for more information on Yarra Valley Arts events.

The issue of violence against women is set to take the spotlight in the Yarra Ranges. Eastern Domestic Violence Service (EDVOS) Chief Executive Officer, Jenny Jackson, is preparing to deliver a keynote speech to the region, which aims to address men’s violence against women and gender inequality. Yarra Ranges Council will host the free event on Tuesday 21 November at the Box Hill Institute’s Lilydale Lakeside Campus. EDVOS is a specialist family violence service in Melbourne’s eastern metropolitan region, which provides a broad range of services to support women and children who are responding to family violence. The session will begin with a speech from Yarra Ranges Council chief executive officer, Glenn Patterson, as he discusses council’s efforts to address gender inequality. The presentation will start at 2pm in the LB/ LC building. There is free parking available on the campus and a bus service runs from Lilydale station to the campus. The session will conclude with afternoon tea, so make sure you RSVP. To RSVP, or for more information, visit www. yarraranges.vic.gov.au.

Coldstream flying instructor Dick Gower has been recognised for his dedication to the service of aviation. Chief flying instructor with Coldstream Airport, Mr Gower received The Royal Aeronautical Society and Australian Flying Col Pay Award on 20 October as part of the 2017 Wings Awards. Mr Gower has been at Coldstream Airport since 1974 when, he says, he went to the Boundary Road airport to get some flying hours up. “I ended up staying around for more than 40 years,” he said. Over the past 58 years, Mr Gower has served the general aviation community in many roles. Mr Gower was nominated by colleagues and peers in aviation through The Coldstream Flyers Club. The award was presented by David Pilkington, president of the RAS, and his citation recognised not only a passion for flying and aircraft, but a dedicated and professional commitment to teaching others and sharing his knowledge. It said that as a flying instructor and engineering exponent, Mr Gower has nurtured and advised countless flying careers.

“A world-recognised expert in the De Havilland Chipmunk, Dick has lent his expertise to many people, while simultaneously instructing at Royal Victorian Aero Club, supporting many air shows across Australia, serving on the Victorian Regional Airspace Procedures Advisory Committee (RAPAC), writing safety-related articles for several Australia aviation magazines and getting himself involved in issues concerning aviation to a very deep level,” it said. It recognised his roles as an Approved Testing Officer/Flight Examiner, past president of the Antique Aeroplane Association of Australia and a member of the Honourable Company of Air Pilots Australia. He has also served on CASA technical committees and established a consulting company, Australia-Pacific Aviation Services. Mr Gower said his interest in flying started as a child, and sparked a lifelong interest in flying. He said one of the things that kept him passionate is that things are constantly changing, and the passion he sees in young people. “Some of the young people are awesome. They have huge computer skills that my generation didn’t grow up with and that’s a big difference. “You never stop learning,” he said.

Thrills in the air and on ground Whether it’s in the air or on the ground, there’s plenty for everyone at this year’s air show at Lilydale Airport. Taking place on Sunday 26 November, gates are set to open at 11am, with the air show kicking off at 1 pm. Prior to the show’s start, there will be an array of activities and food available, with a modern and antique aircraft on display, a jumping castle and interactive play opportunities for kids, showbags for sale and a variety of aviation exhibits for those who dream or are serious about learning to fly. As Lilydale Airport management team member Neroli Merridew explained, highlights of the air show will include aerobatics by two Australian champions, flypasts from the likes of a Mustang Mk 21, Winjeel and Tiger Moth, as well as a formation of little planes and much more. Skydiving and even model aeroplanes are also included, while programs will be distributed by the Lilydale Squadron of the Australian Air League. And for those looking to snag themselves an early Christmas present, the airport’s popular Christmas vouchers are ideal presents for flying lessons or scenic flights and will be available to purchase on the day. “Lilydale Airport is proud to have served the recreational and flying needs in the eastern and northern sectors of Melbourne for almost 50 years,” Neroli said. “The various flying activities include flying training to airline entry level, business flying, scenic flights over the Yarra Valley and further afield, weekend or extended flying tours and as a base for local aircraft owners. In addition, the airport provides the local community with emergency services such as police and air ambulance and as a base for the water

Quite the adventure Healesville author and adventurer Heather Ellis will share her experiences of a 42,000-kilometre adventure across Africa when she speaks at Yarra Junction Library on Saturday, 25 November. Heather’s book ‘Ubuntu: One Woman’s Motorcycle Odyssey Across Africa’ details her epic journey over 15 months and 19 countries riding a Yamaha TT600 off-road motorcycle from south to north Africa. The book, listed as a ‘best seller’ in travel on Amazon, is a travel memoir about a life-changing adventure into the soul of Africa, where she finds Ubuntu - the universal bond that connects all of humanity as one. The memoir is a survival story which also documents a deeply spiritual journey of personal growth. Tony Davis, reviewing Ubuntu in the Australian Financial Review, touches on a twist to the story that takes the tale even deeper.

The twist, he says “reveals something about Heather Ellis that’s even braver still”. A sequel to Ubuntu, the story of her adventures by motorcycle along the Silk Road, will be out next year so this talk will certainly whet the appetite for the continuing adventure. In an extraordinary career, Heather has worked as a radiation safety technician, motorcycle courier, journalist and in communications for the NGO, Plan International, any one of which would make for an interesting discussion. The mother of three still rides and is an advocate for motorcycle road safety as a member of Victoria’s Motorcycle Expert Advisory Panel. Heather will present her talk and slideshow at 11.30am on Saturday, 25 November. The event is free but bookings are essential. Visit www.heather-ellis.com for more about the book, and 9800 6462 or www.yourlibrary. com.au to book.

Directed by and starring Kenneth Branagh, Murder on the Orient Express is made with passion but stumbles over the finer details. A passenger is murdered on the Orient Express train and world-famous detective Hercule Poirot (Branagh) must find the culprit. Branagh is the stand-out aspect of the film. He plays Poirot with both quirky effervescence and a searing conviction, and, as director, he commands sumptuous visuals and several long single-take sequences that superbly convey Poirot’s tense, unfolding thoughts during the murder investigation. But despite the extraordinary pedigree of actors sharing the screen with Branagh, most of the characters are simplistic and fade into the background.

For that matter, I had completely forgotten about two of the Orient Express passengers, a volatile count and his delicate wife, until they appeared again without warning more than halfway through the film. Save for some very clever deduction toward the beginning, Poirot’s method of cracking the murder case is unconvincing due to all the huge assumptions he makes. The connections every passenger have to one another stretch credibility, and the big twist seems to exist more for its own sake than any organic story reason, with the guilty party leaving clues that deliberately implicate themselves and work against their self-interest. Murder on the Orient Express is a disappointing murder-mystery film unworthy of its sterling cast, director, or Poirot’s magnificent moustache. - Seth Hynes

Lever stars in Burras’ win By Chris Anderson YARRA VALLEY CRICKET ASSOCIATION Another cracking day in the valley saw the teams in DJ Strachan Shield and RA Finger Trophy complete their season-opening stretch of one day games. This round saw the teams compete against their own competition before two-day games kick off next round. The most anticipated game of the round was that of the Strachan Shield grand final replay between the reigning premiers Warburton-Millgrove and the undefeated Mount Evelyn. Mount Evelyn duly accepted the opportunity to bat first, with the in-form pairing of Daniel Giblin (42) and Jesse Fraser (21) giving the home side another solid start. Where the rest of the batting order have capitalised on these starts thus far this season, this week wasn’t to be, as they fell victim against some wellexecuted slow bowling. As Burras captain Daniel Lever made regular changes to his bowling line-up to keep things fresh, it was at the hand of himself (5/31) and Adam Humphrey (4/22) that the Rovers fell victim. After being well set at 4/97, the Mounters were swept aside by the more disciplined Burras for a disappointing 121. The total would prove to be inadequate as the visitors managed to withstand a spirited effort from the home team. The difference between the two sides is that the Burras were able to build their innings around a chanceless, unbeaten half-century from opener Sean Humphrey (59 not out). The visitors weren’t without their wobbles, and the home team their chances, but with a total just not enough, and a cool calm batsman keeping things together, the Burras managed to pass the total fairly comfortable to reassert their stronghold on the competition, despite some earlier failings. Yarra Junction reaffirmed their credentials as the next challenger to the reigning premiers as they swept by Yarra Glen who sit in a similar position as the Eagles. Yarra Glen batted first and jut could not muster any free flowing batting. Young Eagles speedster Jesse Cook (4/8) proved almost unplayable as he led another disciplined and consistent display from the Eagles bowlers. With no batsman scoring beyond 20, the visitors found themselves clinging on to stay in the innings, rather than forging ahead to a significant total, and eventually their innings stalled at 8/107. The Eagles have managed small chases with relative ease this season, with the only blip on the radar occurring a few weeks ago against Seville. Again, it was Andy Taylor who ensured there would be no nervous moments for the Yarra Junction faithful, as his third half century of the season would ensure a comfortable victory for the Eagles who would be well pleased with their efforts thus far, and they have positioned themselves well for a tilt at finals. In the final Strachan Shield game of the round, Healesville defeated Seville in a low-scoring encounter. Healesville batted first and seemed to be always behind the eight ball, due to the fall of regular wickets. Mark Sandfort (5/22) was a constant threat throughout the innings, and he was well assisted by the other Seville bowlers. Brandon D’Amore (32) did his best to shore things up through the middle to lower order, but his efforts only partially rescued the innings as the home side was still bowled out for a disappointing 117 with a few overs still in the bank. What looked to be a mediocre target proved to be Everest for Seville. Dermott Fry (5/20) continues to build his stocks, and he ripped through a limp top and middle-order of the visitors to leave the chase in tatters at 6/17. With the relatively small target, Marcus Smith (28) gave the visitors some chance of winning with some handy late order partnerships, but the damage

Mount Evelyn’s Jesse Fraser again provided good support for opening partner, Daniel Giblin. had been done and the Blues folded for 77 inside 28 overs. In Finger Trophy action, Coldstream have proven across this one day stretch that they will be the team to chase this season, and they enter two day cricket with a four and two record after victory against Launching Place. Launching Place batted first and constructed a consistent innings across their 40 overs. Andy Vandervlught (40), Max Bradley (28) and Stuart Parker (27) all contributed at top of the order, but their biggest failing was their inability to kick on and score a ‘big one’. Daniel Whelan is another young bowler on the rise, and his tidy figures of 4/16 ensured the visitors innings would be kept in check, and a total of 6/141 would prove to be attainable. It was Coldstream’s experienced top order of Leam Doughty (57 not out), Dean Oliffe (37) and Paul Harris (22) that ensured this would not be a missed opportunity for the Crocs. Anthony Sequira (2/31) was Launch’s leading bowler once again with a couple of wickets, but the wickets were just too far between to really challenge the home team. Woori Yallock kept themselves in the contenders spotlight with a comprehensive display against a faltering Wandin. Wandin started the season in a blaze of glory its some impressive early season victories; however they have found things difficult since against one tough opposition. Batting first, the Bulldogs failed to impress against a disciplined Woori Yallock attack. The pressure was heaped upon the visitors for the entire innings, as Jackson Wright (2/13) and Adam Dunn (3/22) applied the screws upfront, and Cal Ferguson (3/12) and Paul Broussard (2/9) ensured the strangulation would not subside. An unbeaten 24 from Jarrod Dobson ensured there was a little respectability on the scoreboard, but a total that doesn’t reach three figures is tough to defend. That it proved to be as Woori Yallock’s experienced top order ensured the target would be reached without too many dramas. Lachlan Sinnott (2/32) kept the home team honest, but the Bulldogs just didn’t have enough in the bank to seriously challenge the Tigers as they passed the total with seven wickets in the shed and more than 19 overs to play out. Georgia wins Healesville on

top of the ladder

By Jamie Strudley YARRA RANGES ATHLETICS The sun finally came out for a round of Saturday morning’s athletics competition. The warmth brought out the competitive spirit in the Yarra Ranges athletes with some exceptional performances, many PBs and lots of amazing smiles. After a very hectic start to the season, the seniors had a weekend off to prepare for next Saturday when the club hosts a round of AV Shield at its Mount Evelyn venue. The club is looking forward to welcoming athletes from throughout Victoria to its fantastic facilities for an afternoon of interclub athletics. There might even be a few Olympians present. Congratulations to Georgia Laven and Tayleb Willis, who secured selection in the Team Vic Athletics team with their gold medal winning performances at the Victorian All Schools track
