Steep power price rises putting heat on business By Luke Voogt Geelong businesses are struggling to cope with rising power costs according the city’s chamber of commerce. “The lack of confidence around energy and energy pricing is causing a lot of angst around the business community,” said the chamber’s chief executive officer Bernadette Uzelac. “A lot of our members have (raised that concern) from the point of view of their day-to-day operations.” Ms Uzelac said many local businesses were already operating on tight profit margins due to “global competitive pressures”. “Any change in the cost of doing business is going to have severe consequences to businesses (and their ability) to survive ... and employ people.”

Ms Uzelac called for a national energy policy after industry advisor Tennant Reed last week warned that rising prices could cost Geelong 2500 manufacturing jobs. “I would hate to think that was the case but I think, potentially, it could be,” she said. “I don’t think we want to underestimate this.” The price rises affected a number of local small to medium business as well as hospitals, Ms Uzelac said. She warned that rising power prices impacting large, energy-intensive businesses could have flow-on effects for local suppliers. “When bigger businesses have to cut costs to accommodate energy price rises there’s obviously going to be impacts on their supply chain,” she said. Ms Uzelac called on the Federal Government to impose export controls on gas and introduce

more renewable energy sources. “It’s something that needs to be addressed as a matter of urgency,” she said. “Business needs certainty of supply. We’re at a critical stage where for some businesses it might be too late.” But she declined to comment on the State Government’s memorandum on gas. The State Government has banned onshore gas exploration until 2020 while the opposition has planned to lift the ban if elected in 2018. The Geelong Manufacturing Council had lobbied both governments and held workshops on energy saving options, said chief executive officer David Peart. “While it’s positive to see a level of uptake of energy saving measures by local industry, no one likes to see costs increase as it does go to the business bottom line.”

Mysteries and remedies leading the way for science Creating forensic crime scenes for primary school sleuths is just one way award-winning Highton scientist Luke Henderson makes science interesting. Associate Professor Henderson won a statewide award on Thursday for his treatment breakthroughs for diseases like tuberculosis and cancer - and his unique talent for communication. “I believe that making science accessible should be a part of every scientist’s life,” he said. “Great science needs to be well communicated if it is to provide the evidence-base necessary to shape critical policy decisions and industry investment choices. “For young Australians, science, technology,

engineering and mathematics education is critical for the nation’s future.” The Victorian Young Tall Poppy Science Award recognised Assoc Prof Henderson as one of the state’s most promising scientists for his work in minimising harm from cancer treatments. “Sometimes, undergoing treatment for cancer is as painful and crippling as the cancer itself and is only the slightly lesser of two evils,” he said. “This is because cancer treatments do not see a difference between cancer cells and healthy cells.” The Deakin University professor’s research focused on using “the destructive nature of cancer cells against themselves”. “Cancer cells divide very quickly,” he explained.

“This means they are unable to manage simple processes like ‘taking out the garbage’.” These characteristics allowed him to develop treatments that specifically targeted cancer cells and minimised the painful side-effects of cancer treatment. Assoc Prof Henderson graduated his PhD in 2007 and completed a postdoctoral fellowship with Oxford University before joining Deakin in 2008. He meets regularly with groups of high school students and hosted teachers and students in his laboratory for supervised lab work. Assoc Prof Henderson has attracted more than $13 million in funding to translate research into concrete outcomes.

A group of Drysdale residents has lost its fight against a special charge scheme seeking more than $250,000 to seal roads near their houses. The state planning tribunal ruled that the objectors’ nine dwellings on Station, Bridge and Crimea streets would benefit from improved driving conditions and less dust form the existing gravel road surfaces.

Torquay residents are up in arms over the threat of five-storey buildings in the beachside centre of their once-sleepy town. Fair enough, too. The Gold Coast can stay where it is. But has the horse already bolted on the town now referred to as Point Cook By the Sea? After all, the past decade or so of Surf Coast councils have overseen phenomenal residential development at Torquay. And a fair bit of commercial as well. Just last month the council squeezed extra allotments into plans for housing at Spring Creek, the very development of which most residents vigorously opposed in the first place. And then a few years back was the quiet introduction of the Surf Coast’s first high-density zoning - the same allowing skyscrapers in Docklands. Watch out Torquay north! All this has delivered a regional-city-sized population of 18,000 - and, according to forecasts, 28,000 by 2040. Hopefully they also sign petitions against high-rise development! With summer fast approaching, the usual flood of warnings about everything from fire danger to sunburn will get their annual run. But the flood began this week with a trickle of advice that was probably redundant for anyone with at least a shred of brain tissue between their ears. Yes, the Vision Eye Institute was on hand with its timely tips on … safe handling of champagne corks. Some readers will be surprised to know it’s not a good idea to open a champagne bottle pointed at the face of anyone nearby. And pointing the bottle at a wall is another no-no because, as the institute cleverly warns, “a cork can ricochet off a surface and

propel itself into someone’s eye”. Sheesh, talk about killjoys. Maybe the liver institute can follow up with a warning on the dangers of consuming the bottle’s contents! FIND ME: Five to find in the ads of today’s Indy. Plus we’re giving two $100 cards each week for five weeks.

And to finish with a question that nobody’s asking, but which might be worth answering whatever happened to the cannon recovered from the Light of the Age shipwreck in 1976? That’s what former scuba diver Marilyn Archer wants to know after a friend came across a picture of said cannon and its bearded retrieval team. “At this time diving and knowledge of shipwrecks was in its infancy, so it was a great discovery,” says an intrigued Marilyn. “What happened to this canon after all their effort? Was it restored, lost? “Someone out there might know.” Double Take checked the Victorian Heritage Council website, finding only that the cannon was “removed”, but not to where. Blast! A consolation at least was the council’s description of how the vessel came to be wrecked. “Captain drunk, ran ashore at night.” Not a bad effort considering he was on water at the time!

Big ‘yes’ vote for equality By Luke Voogt Moriac’s Sharyn Faulkner can finally look forward to her son tying the knot after Australia voted to legalise same-sex marriage this week. Her son Ned has been with his partner for three years and got engaged in April. “He’s already rung me and said ‘you’d better start planning a wedding’,” she said. Sharon joined hundreds of ‘Yes’ campaigners and revellers at the Piano Bar in Little Malop St on Wednesday night after the Australian Bureau of Statistics announced the result that morning. “It’s an awesome result,” she said before the champagne flowed. “I think it will be a great night.” Almost 72 per cent of Corangamite residents and 68 per cent Corio residents who voted in the survey supported same-sex marriage, well above

the national average of 61. “That’s a resounding result and Sarah Henderson needs to take note of that,” Sharyn said. “She definitely needs to be pushing for a nondiscriminatory Bill in Parliament. They need to be completely equal with the rest of Australia.” Australian anti-discrimination laws would protect religious leaders from being forced to marry same sex couples, she added. Stonehaven farmer Dave Formosa-Urquhart was thrilled with the vote, which further “cemented” his family as “socially acceptable”. “Who isn’t?” he said. “Well ... there’s probably a minority.” The 35-year-old had been with his partner for 15 years and together they had three children through surrogacy in India. “I’m glad (the vote) was positive,” he said.

“I don’t know how we would have told (our children) everyone voted against it.” The couple had been in a registered relationship, aka a civil union, for eight years but still lacked the same rights as married heterosexual couples. “(The Yes vote is) one step closer to getting the same rights,” Dave said. But, more importantly, the vote provided recognition of his family, he said. “There’s many different types of families at school now - families where parents have split up, where children are raised by their grandparents. “Our family’s a little bit different but the same.” The Indy was unable to obtain a comment from the Geelong branch of Coalition for Marriage.

From page 1 “I am sure that the Geelong community will draw their own conclusions from her refusal.” Mr Morris said the State Government had appointed monitors to “intimidate a democratically elected council”, given it had wanted to delay the election. The Opposition and the Greens blocked the government’s efforts to delay elections until 2020 in Parliament. “By keeping (the monitors) in office, the government is signalling that it doesn’t trust the community’s elected representatives,” Mr Morris said. Former mayor Darryn Lyons described Ms Kairouz declining to welcome his replacement as “incredibly disappointing”. “The government is threatening the mayor already - this is a major problem,” Mr Lyons said. “I’m absolutely appalled that the government keeps fighting Geelong because it doesn’t get what it wants.” The re-election of four sacked councillors reflected ratepayers’ “obvious” sentiment about the sacking, Mr Lyons said. Mr Lyons threw his support behind Cr Harwood, saying he would “fight for every dollar” from the state and federal governments. “Bruce is a great community man for Geelong and has much-needed experience.” Mr Lyons said he envied his former deputy’s new council. “It’s a great spread of views from Labor to Greens to conservative.” He also ridiculed the government’s appointment of ratepayer-funded monitors Peter Dorling and Jude Munro. “They’re getting paid exorbitant sums, more than the mayor for goodness’ sake! They’re all getting on the Labor gravy train.” The appointments set up the new council for conflict with the government, Mr Lyons warned. “That’s going to cause a lot of angst and people will be literally petrified. City’s debt a concern, says mayor By Luke Voogt Geelong’s future debt could delay or stop City Hall projects, new mayor Bruce Harwood has warned. “Any debt concerns me,” he said on his first day on the job, in response to reports City Hall’s debt would triple in four years. The Indy revealed in September that the Geelong administrators’ final budget planned a loan balance of $125 million in 2020/2021, up from $45 million in 2016/2017. Mr Harwood said he would meet with the City’s finance department to determine what infrastructure “we can and can’t finish, and to what level”. “We’ll look at what the numbers tell us.” Geelong’s new councillors elected Mr Harwood and Peter Murrihy, who were a part of the council that the State Government sacked in 2016, at its first meeting on Tuesday night. Mr Harwood stood for mayor despite telling the Indy he was only interested in the “supporting role” of deputy mayor in September. But his election result and the response to his campaign motivated him to run for the position, along with “personal factors” he would not elaborate on. “That then gave me the confidence to discuss it with my colleges,” he said. “I think they saw myself and Peter as safe hands.” Mr Harwood pledged to be a “full-time mayor” and use his experience from previous terms as mayor to Geelong’s advantage. “I really want to help the newer councillors get up to speed really quickly. We’re 12 months behind ... we’ve got a lot of work to do.” Mr Harwood said his priorities would be economic growth, infrastructure and the Geelong Conference Convention Centre. “We’ve not been able to have a look at (the business case) yet but I’ll certainly be trying to get as much detail and information as I can.” Mr Harwood said international delegations could help Geelong to sell itself following the city’s admission to UNESCO Creative Cities Network. “We’re not just bound by Geelong anymore.”

City Hall chief executive officer Kelvin Spiller has announced his resignation for 31 March despite a further six months remaining on his contract. Mr Spiller announced the resignation on Wednesday, saying March was the right time “for a new beginning” for the council. “November next year was too late for the next CEO to commence,” he said. He said the timing would allow his replacement to work on the City’s next budget and major projects with Geelong’s new council, which took up office on Tuesday. “My decision to resign should in no way reflect negatively on the new council. “In fact, I had given confidential notice of my intentions to the Local Government Department well before last night’s swearing-in process.” Mr Spiller started as acting CEO in June 2015 to fill the position left by the departure of Gillian Miles. “I decided to stay longer because I could see the organisation was in a period of instability and turmoil.” He held the position for more than two years and worked under Geelong’s administrators after the State Government sacked the council citing a “culture of bullying” in April 2016. “I know I am leaving the organisation in a much improved state compared to when I arrived,” he said. Mr Spiller looked forward to “taking a break in Italy or France for a few months” and said he would continue his work with a number of Geelong boards. He declined to reveal if he was moving onto another job.

Wolfgang back on wheels By Luke Voogt Bell Park pensioner Wolfgang Klemenz has returned to the pedals after two knee replacements, thanks to a Geelong-based electric bike (ebike) trial. “I’d prefer to ride that bike rather than a mobility scooter,” he told the Indy on Tuesday. Wolfgang picked up the ebike from a Malop Street shop six weeks ago and rode 8km to his home after several years away from the pedals. “I was blowing like a stream train by the time I got home,” he said. “I was swallowing bugs because I had my mouth open.” But soon the 69-year-old was riding all over his suburb, enjoying bike tracks and back roads. “After the six weeks it was a lot better,” he said. “It was just a good feeling to get a bit of fresh air and get a bit of exercise at the same time. It was exercise which I could do with.” Wolfgang joined five other locals in the sixweek trial which was the first of its kind in Victoria, according to the RACV. The ebike used a small electric motor, with three levels of assistance to amplify the cyclists’ pedalling, Wolfgang explained. “It’s not a motorised bike - if you stop pedalling it will stop going,” he said. “It really goes pretty well up steep inclines.” Wolfgang had a knee replacement five years ago and another two years ago, which limited his cycling to an exercise bike in rehab. He discovered the trial in an RACV newsletter and thought “that sounds like, fun I’ll give it a go,” he said. Wolfgang recently handed back his ebike, which he credited for rebuilding his fitness enough for him to return to his normal bicycle. “If you can afford it I reckon they’re great,” he said. The RACV’s Dave Jones said data from the trial would help the insurance company better understand how customers could use ebikes.

City to get smart with wi-fi seating “Smart street furniture” with high-speed wifi will be among new high-tech amenities soon rolling out across Geelong, the Federal Government has announced. Streets lights that brighten to deter criminals and sensors indicating available parking spaces were some of the other upgrades to “switch on” Geelong as part of the city’s Smart Technology Project, the government said. Cities and Digital Transformation assistant minister Angus Taylor announced federal funding for the project on Wednesday, linking it to Geelong’s transformation from a “traditional manufacturing” city. Geelong’s council would “partner” Canberra and private operators to deliver the upgrades, Mr Taylor said. The Federal Government had contributed $415,000 from a Smart Cities and Suburbs Program to build on $518,000 so far from City Hall and its “private partners”, he said. “Smart street furniture will literally switch on the city, meaning residents and visitors can easily plug into a range of technologies (such as) charging your electric car, digital signage to assist the all-important tourism sector, street lights with sensors that react to anti-social behaviour,” Mr Taylor said. “The Smart Cities and Suburbs Program wants to support clever ideas that fix local problems like street crime and lack of connectivity and that can be replicated in other places, particularly in the outer suburbs of our cities and the regions. “We’re actively looking at projects to support the Geelong region transitioning from traditional manufacturing to a more diverse digital economy.” Federal Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson said the Smart Technology Project would “help drive innovation in Geelong”. “The Geelong region has a proud history of innovation, creativity, and smart technology, as recognised by Geelong’s recent induction into the UNESCO Creative Cities Network.”

Symphony of collision a sure hit By Luke Voogt Geelong Revival organiser Nick Heath remembers a time when the waterfront car races were notorious for nasty crashes. “In those days there were just a few hay bales on the track - there were no safety barriers or anything,” the 52-year-old said. “The old man and I, and sometimes my brother, would just cruise down there to have a look.” Nick would watch cars zoom down the makeshift course in the Geelong Sprints from the waterfront lawns alongside hundreds of locals. “(I was) slightly bored, to be honest, because I was 12 and didn’t know what was going on.” But safety had come a long way since the shoddy standards of decades past, he said. “The cars are better, the barriers are better and safety is a long way better.” Nick was the right man to bring the event back in 2012, after a nine-year absence - racing runs in his veins. His father Daryl, who died last year, was a long-time racer and local Ford dealer. “Being the son of a car dealer you’re always around cars,” he said. Nick has followed in his father’s footsteps and still races today. He spoke to the Indy fresh off competing in the Historic Sandown race meeting on Friday. “I’m no great shakes as a racer, but I didn’t crash so it was a good weekend.” After the racing stopped on the waterfront in 2003, David approached the previous organisers to get it going again. But after a few years liaising with them he realised “I had no option but to do it myself ”. A year of planning went into reviving the iconic event, Nick said. “Just putting the event on is huge - it’s a bit crazy. If I had known then what I know now I probably wouldn’t have done it - so it’s lucky I didn’t.” But it was worth the effort to again take to the track in his Jensen Interceptor.

REVHEAD: Geelong’s Nick Heath gets ready to race in his Jensen Interceptor. “It sounds like an angry god, and that’s in street-legal form.” The racing genes have passed on to Nick’s only son James, who recently acquired a racing licence. “He likes cars,” Nick said. “His favourites are the 1969 Mustang and Ford GT40, both of which

are pretty acceptable cars. “He can race the Jensen, he just can’t drive it on the road due to P-plate rules.” V8 Supercar driver Dean Canto will join Nick on the track in a Renault Megane Trophy during this year’s Geelong Revival Motoring Festival.

Canto will put the V6 through its paces on the quarter-mile track for the Saturday and Sunday of the event. The motoring festival runs from 24 to 26 November and features food and vintage cars, caravans and outfits for revheads and the general public alike.

It’s a run for their money By Luke Voogt Nelson Park students joined the partner of Cats captain Joel Selwood and new Run Geelong ambassador, Brit Davis, raising money for sick children on Monday. “They loved it,” she said. “It was hot though there were lots of red faces.” Ms Davis, who is a teacher at the special needs school, described the day as an “awesome initiative” to bring Run Geelong to the kids. “A lot of them can’t make it or it’s too overwhelming for them,” she said. “It gives them a chance to participate at a community event but at their school where they’re comfortable.”

Ms Davis will join walkers and runners from across Geelong at the waterfront on Sunday raising funds for Barwon Health’s paediatric rehabilitation services. “It’s really important we look after our future generation and give them the best care that they can get,” she said. Fellow Run Geelong supporter Stacey Ciach joined Ms Davis at Nelson Park. Her daughters Ava and Mia are long-time child ambassadors for the event due to their rare health condition. “It’s my first year coming out,” she said. “The kids are so excited - it’s just a really beautiful thing to be a part of.” Nelson Park had run the event since 2015,

teacher Rachael Souter said. “Because we’re a special school a lot of kids have come through (Geelong’s) special care nursery,” she said. “All our families have been very generous and supporting - the first year we raised about $700.” Ms Souter hoped a bit of “star power” would help the school reach its largest total yet. “Having Brit definitely helps,” she said. “A lot of staff have been sponsoring kids and a lot have been chasing their own sponsorship outside of school.” About 80 teachers and staff monitored the students as they ran laps of the school’s oval. “We’ve got a lot of kids who need extra support - so it’s all hands on deck,” Ms Souter said.

Two people died and two others were fighting for life after four crashes in Geelong and the Otways last weekend. A Nissan 4WD rolled at Gellibrand just after 2.30pm Saturday, killing Barwon Heads teen Sarah Crimmins. The 4WD was travelling along Frys Road near Colac-Lavers Hill Road when the driver lost control of the vehicle, police said. Sarah, 16, was a student at Bellarine Secondary College and had just begun performing as a guitarist. She died at the scene despite her sister Louise, who was the other passenger, attempting to revive her. The driver, a 20-year-old man from Clifton Springs, and Louise sustained minor injuries. Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives interviewed the driver and released him pending further inquiries, a police spokesperson said on Monday morning. About the same time as the Gellibrand fatality a South Geelong crash claimed the life of a 36-yearold Warrnambool man. A white Holden Commodore station wagon was travelling east along Barwon Terrace near Bellerine Street just before 2.30pm, police said. Police believed a Toyota Lancruiser utility attempted to turn right into Bellerine Street when the collision occurred. Paramedics took the Warrnambool man, who was a passenger in the station wagon, to hospital where he died a short time later. No-one else was injured. Two other road users suffered critical injuries in unrelated crashes. That morning a car hit an elderly cyclist in Breakwater, throwing him from his bike. And that evening a car hit a pedestrian at high speed at Ocean Grove. ‘Fun’ design just missed Cup first By Luke Voogt Bell Park designer Ali Rauf narrowly missed top place at the Melbourne Cup in a prestigious, invite-only fashion competition last week. Ali’s equine-themed outfit beat more than 100 entries from across Australia to place second in the Fashions on the Field Design Award. “It was an absolute surprise,” he told the Indy. Highton model Alex Hecker wore the outfit, which featured 3D horses complete with clips and ropes for the reins and bridle. “I thought it was a really fun way to tie fashions on the field in with the actual reason the public gather for this occasion,” Ali said. “It’s a cheeky update on classic racewear with the traditional peplum and pencil skirt silhouette, reminiscent of the works of Dior and Chanel.“ Alex, who regularly models for designers at the Cup, cautioned Ali not to get his hopes up. “She’s been doing it for six or seven years,” he said. “To be honest we were really happy just to be showcasing.” So Ali was shocked when his entry beat eight of the 10 finalists in the prestigious competition. The Saudi-born fashionista’s love of horses inspired the unique outfit. He had painted the “majestic and powerful” creatures since he was a child, he said. “My first ever proper painting was a horse. I’ve just been obsessed with them.” Ali and business partner Luke Perkins spent a month creating the dress and hand-embroidering the shoulder pieces. “At the start it was too plain - it was just two white horses,” he said.

But even after he added the bridle and reins it still sometimes took people a while to remark “Ah, they’re horses”, he said. Ali spent another fortnight on the feathered headpiece, which featured two ceramic horses. “People either go for a very extravagant headpiece and the outfit is simple, or the other way around,” he said. “But we wanted to do an outfit where you couldn’t tell which one was louder.” The Melbourne Cup introduced the designer-only award as they preferred entrants in the main event to select their own outfits, he explained. Ali spoke to the Indy’s sister publication, the Geelong Coast Magazine, earlier this year about his upbringing and fashion inspiration. He moved to Pakistan with his family when he was young and his father’s army career saw him travel the world. Ali studied in the US after high school, before earning a scholarship to Deakin and moving to Geelong to study architecture eight years ago. He launched his Bird Skin fashion label three years ago and had won several times at the Fashion Awards Australia since. More recently he was one of two Australians to make the final 32 of a fashion competition for the 250th anniversary of UK embroidery brand Hand and Lock. He came runner-up in the competition’s fashion hand embroidery category. Ali looked forward to “maybe relaxing a little bit” after a hectic few years. “We’re gearing up to get our next collection out for next year because (it’s been) so chaotic.”

Letters 2500 jobs too much to pay Every day the media is saturated with glowing reports of how wind and solar are getting cheaper and that fossil fuels soon won’t be needed anymore for electricity generation. In the real world increasing amounts of renewables are destroying our once robust, reliable and cheap electricity system. In last week’s Indy, Australian Industry Group adviser Tennant Reed warned of Geelong losing 2500 more manufacturing jobs if prices continued rising. Geelong’s oil refinery recently forecast price rises of more than half, or $25 million, which would significantly impact its viability. Mr Reed said gas prices had doubled since 2014 and that closure of power plants and subsequent reliance on gas was responsible for the price increases. However, Mr Reed said not a word about highly subsidised renewables making fossil fuels less viable. Ten Australian coal-powered electricity plants with an output of around 5500MW have closed since 2011. This is equal to one quarter of total east coast electricity demand! Our reserve electricity generation is now critically low and blackouts are possible this summer. Around the planet China, India, Turkey, Vietnam, Japan, Indonesia, Philippines and the like are building nearly 1000 new coal plants that produce low-emission, low-cost, reliable, quality electricity while we build windmills churning out intermittent, fragile, junk electricity. In 2015 the Victorian wholesale electricity price was $30/MWh. In October it was $73/MWh and is projected to be $92/MWh next year. Mr Reed said: “Renewables coming online could help relieve prices”. While Jukka Tuisku (Letters, 10 November) tinkered arithmetically to support the fraud that human-induced carbon dioxide is warming Earth, Luke Voogt’s front-page Indy story showed the damage to industry and its workers caused by sky-rocketing energy prices. That these prices are the result of intermittent and unreliable wind and solar energy forced onto the grid by the demands of green activists is well-known, and demonstrated by South Australia. The Victorian Government is not quite as brazen as our neighbouring state, which demolished its last coal-fired plant by blowing it up. The Victorian Government merely forced the closure of Hazelwood by tripling coal royalties and raising the renewable energy target to 40 per cent, the rate at which South Australia produces its blackouts. That the green demand for de-carbonisation means the end of base-load energy production from coal and gas, and therefore the end of all industry, is a feature of the green vision for the future. Dispatch with greenie folly The Indy caught my eye with the front page story headlined, ‘Power shock to 2500 jobs as costs rise’. Thanks to environmentalists’ unproven assumptions, governments have been panicked into taking action on climate change. The direct result - the squandering of billions of dollars on renewable energy - has not only increased power costs but power supply has become less abundant. There is no gain to the nation by going ahead with any emissions reduction target, which will place a severe stain on the economy while perpetuating expensive green power and widespread power outages. When will renewable energy supporters understand the word ’dispatchable’? Wind and solar are not suited for baseload power and cannot power a modern economy. No Australian government plans to take over existing fossil fuel power stations or to build new ones. Until this is done we had better get used to inadequate power supplies when further coalfired power stations close because of preference given to renewables. Why do we continue the folly of funding renewables, which undermine our own economy? A good start for Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull in reducing energy costs would be to follow President Donald Trump’s lead in ditching the Paris Accord in the national interest. knowing they will rise always because of closed generators and so on. From a quick calculation based on a power company having one million customers it is easy to see that the company might have a fairly massive fortnightly income, which could yield substantial interest when placed on the overnight money markets or other investment options. The company would also be able to generate substantial credit, on top of actual monies on hand, for investments elsewhere. It seems obvious then that power companies make money hand over fist. Given the money in advance they receive, power bills should really be on the way down. Our power generators are majority foreignowned. Price gouging and over-the-top billing should not be allowed, especially since governments’ privatisation propaganda was based on the now seemingly false premise that “competition” would force prices down. That has turned out to be a falsehood, with the governments abrogating their constitutional contract to provide “peace, order and good government.” And no-one can say that good government means thousands of people in Victoria alone should have their power cut off over their inability to pay ridiculously expensive power bills. Forcing the point Jukka Tuisku made his own logarithmic calculations on atmospheric CO2 in order to prove me wrong. Let me quote the late Professor Bob Carter, of James Cook University: “The first 20ppm causes warming of 15.3 watts per square metre; (the) next 20ppm causes warming of 2.9W/m2; (the) next 20ppm causes warming of 1.7W/m2 … (so) the first 60ppm produces a strong cumulative ra-

diation forcing of 19.9W/m2. “This pattern continues such that even at the relatively impoverished (CO2) level of 180ppm that marked recent glacial episodes, more so at the 280ppm level that marked the pre-industrial atmosphere, and even more so at today’s 390ppm, further 20ppm increases in (CO2) produce only a tiny .2W/m2, and successively lessening, amount of extra radiation forcing.” I prefer the word of one who spent his entire career investigating the subject; that the effect of any further increase in atmospheric CO2 is trivial. Tide will turn back to truth I am disappointed that a major change to the definition of marriage has been proposed following a ‘yes’ vote by a minority of registered voters in Australia. While it is claimed that the question was fairly presented, the bias in the argument was evident. This was the case when all major political parties, followed by major commercial and even industrial bodies, accompanied by sporting groups, supported the ‘yes’ case regardless of the views of their clients. The ABC was evidently in favour of same-sex marriage in all its programming. Newspapers had many photos of the beautiful people and celebrities denied their rights. The many on the other side who dared to voice an opinion were hounded as bigots. The brave stand of Israel Folau was a case in point. The majority of churches in Geelong sadly chose to remain silent, failing to make a stand for what their scriptures clearly teach. The current difficulty in attracting priests and ministers might have resulted in a diminishing of the strength required for leadership. In her poem The Tide Will Win, Priscilla Leonard pictures successive waves being resisted by a cruel reef but, despite constant opposition and the noise and crashing conflict, the relentless tide silently succeeds. The lessons of 6000 years of recorded history cannot be set aside by what will prove to be a modern aberration, and the Bible will prove to be the rock of truth. Special solution to lack of sense I recently read that the “average" household was spending $260-plus a week on food. Pure extravagance! I know of any number of families who spend less than half that amount but do not go without. Try buying meat specials when they are on offer and prepare meals around them. In the same way, it makes commonsense to buy fruit and vegetables when they are in season and at their lowest price. I guess the problem is that commonsense is not common. Michael J Gamble Belmont

Supporting Geelong locals to live well at home Heather Shearer, a proud Geelong local, believes she is fortunate to have the support she needs to keep living independently in her own home.

A complete package of home care When Heather's husband died four years ago, she found herself in an unfamiliar situation. “I was caring for Keith in his ﬁnal years, but when he passed away, I went from being a carer to someone who needed care. I’ve always been physically limited because I have rheumatoid arthritis, but I really went downhill at that point. I was struggling,” she says. Following an aged care assessment, Heather was assigned a Home Care Package, which meant she could receive government-funded services to help her live at home. Rockers will Kisstroy you By Justin Flynn There are two cities in Australia that Kisstroyer front man Andrew Kyriacou says “just get” rock ‘n’ roll. Kyriacou, who plays Ace Frehley in the popular Kiss cover band, says Newcastle and Geelong punters are as knowledgeable as anywhere in the country. “Geelong is a special market for us,” he says. “They understand rock music, they just get it. They know their stuff. At other venues it sometimes takes a bit of work for the crowd to get into it, whereas in Geelong they’re into it from the very start.” Kisstroyer will play at the Sphinx Hotel on 18 November and Kyriacou says the band is showing no signs of slowing down after 16 years in the business. “It’s a really good release,” Kyriacou says. “It’s crazy - when we started it was all just a bit of fun. When I get on stage it’s just a release and an adrenaline rush.” The band has even had the blessing of Paul Stanley after playing in front of the legendary KISS performer in Melbourne. “We were asked to do a private party at the Mercury Lounge,” Kyriacou says. “Paul was there and we met him afterwards and he said the show was brilliant.” With a stack of media attention, Kisstroyer has grown into one of the largest touring rock tribute acts in the country. The band has toured internationally, including the UAE and Bahrain. “When we started I couldn’t have imagined we’d even leave the state with it,” Kyriacou says. “It’s pretty amazing - it’s my little baby and something I’m very proud of.” Kyriacou says the band is constantly evolving. “We’re always thinking about ways we can change areas of the show,” he says.

Kisstroyer will hit the Sphinx on Saturday 18 November. “The band is like family. We actually enjoy each other’s company.” And it’s not surprising that the favourite tracks with crowds all over the world are ‘I Was Made for

Lovin’ You’ and ‘Rock and Roll All Nite’. “In Geelong, they’ll know the words of the obscure songs, though,” Kyriacou says. “Geelong for us is a very special niche market.”

Harmonies all over the globe Sing Australia Geelong’s members have brought back harmonies from across the country and the world, says group leader Mary Simms. “We have had a few Geelong members travel overseas - one sang with Sing Australia in Gallipoli on Anzac Day,” she said. The Geelong choir brings its latest show, Harmonies on the Hill, to Newtown this month. The choir is one of 600-plus in national group Sing Australia, which runs three overseas tours and a national gathering of up to 1200 singers. Sing Australia Geelong performs at the Point Danger Dawn Service on Anzac Day, aged care homes, weddings, funerals, nationalisation ceremonies and other events. The love singing was what brought the group together, Mary said. “It is not an auditioned choir - it is very much a community choir. Everyone in the group just loves to sing.” Singing was great for health, Mary said. “Singing brings you pleasure, it increases your self-confidence and is very beneficial to your physical health increasing stamina and creating feel-good endorphins.” Harmonies on the Hill starts at 2pm on 26 November at the St Joseph’s College Performing Arts Centre. Entry is $10, including afternoon tea. Sing Australia Geelong meets on Wednesday night from 7.30-9.30 at the Belmont Senior Citizens Hall. “We have many members who have been with us for in excess of 10 years and welcome others joining us at any time,” Mary said. Disco beats are for all-abilities By Luke Voogt North Geelong cafe owner David Leary wants his new all-abilities disco to become a regular part of his business. “We don’t want to do one or two of these,” he told the Indy on Monday. “We want to do this once a month forever.” David came up with the monthly dance after speaking to his customers. “I’ve met quite a few friends through the cafe that have disabilities, and I’d ask them where they go to dance,” he said. David was surprised to discover many only danced “once or twice a year” at special events. So he decided to create “safe, comfortable and relaxed environment” for people of ages and abilities to “express themselves”. “Who doesn’t love to dance?” he said. “People with disabilities just want to be able to do what everyone else is doing.” David ran his first all-abilities disco on 20 October, with people as young as five and as old as 65 showing up. “A lot of it came out of my pocket the first time, but the joy of doing it probably overrides that,” he said. He hoped his second go on Saturday would help make the disco a regular gig. “I need to get the message out there, so we can at least break even - so it’s sustainable,” he said. “If someone was sitting at home because they

Ryan, who has cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair, has built a mobile DJ business with the help of his family. “We’ve become really good mates,” David said. “He’s an excellent DJ and we like having him in.” The all-abilities disco kicks off at Club Mule kick at 6pm on Saturday. Entry is $15 per person, which includes entertainment, supper and soft drinks. “It is inclusive and makes everyone that walks through the door feel like they are the most important people on the planet,” David said.

Performing half-naked on the streets was Jax Human’s first dance-step to a career as a male stripper. “I started off as a busker on the street dancing topless and I knew that I just wanted to entertain, I loved it,” the Magic Men performer explained. “I started to YouTube male strippers and knew I had what it took to be up on stage and entertain for a living. I’m now closing the shows and teaching the new strippers that come on board with Magic Men.” But after five years with the troupe, Human’s become more than just musclebound eye-candy for his mostly female audience. Along with stepping out alongside the other performers, he now also choreographs their solo and group routines. “I help the guys with their music, their moves and they’re able to then put their own style into it. I think most of my routines are influenced by Chris Brown and I love my rock music, too, so there’s a good mix for all the ladies. “Every woman expresses themselves differently, so I try to incorporate a range of moves into my routine; from hard and rough, to more slow and romantic. Carmel just can’t shake travel bug Active senior Carmel Helman is one of the thousands of over-sixties who have been firmly bitten by the travel bug, completing the gruelling Camino de Santiago, an 800km pilgrimage across Europe. The Ingenia Lifestyle Lara resident said the trip was very liberating, and the first time she was travelling part of the trip on her own, which fuelled a sense of excitement. “I found the Camino Trail very liberating and rewarding - I came home feeling calmer and with a great sense of achievement,” Carmel said. Model range Question: When is an SUV not an SUV? Answer: When it’s an Audi SQ5. The phrase ‘sports utility vehicle’ may seem an oxymoron when applied to most vehicles of the type but this is one that takes the title like no other. The second-generation SQ5 is the successor to one of the most popular Audi performance models to have made it Down Under and at 130kg lighter and 20kW (260kW) more powerful is a worthy combination of performance and practicality. With the SQ5 sprinting to 100km/h in just 5.4 seconds ‘sports’ certainly gets a big tick; with the new Audi offering an additional 10 litres of luggage space over its predecessor, between 550 and 610 litres, depending on the positioning of the sliding rear seat bench. Finally, with the seat back folded a cavernous 1550 litres of cargo room is available. ‘Utility’ indeed. The SQ5 comes in at a whisker under $100,000, while test car options on our vehicle added $12,000 to the price. As sports cars go, the SQ5 is no looker, relying on what’s under the skin to tempt the performance-car buyer. While said to boast an exclusive styling package - no swoopy silhouette with jagged cut-outs - it’s left to a bold stance, 21-inch alloy wheels and red brake calipers to wave the get-up-and-go flag. The latest in adaptive LED headlights and dynamic rear indicators weigh with a touch of prestige and kick-motion operated electric tailgate adds a useful gimmick that is likely to attract onlooker comment. Front occupants get sports seats, they and the rear pews are upholstered in fine Nappa leather. The now familiar Audi virtual cockpit focuses on a 12.3-inch high-resolution dashboard, which can be reconfigured to a sports-specific ’S’ mode at the touch of a button. Privacy glass adds a touch of mystery to passengers, while acoustic glazing allows occupants to enjoy conversation or take pleasure in the highend audio system without undesirable external influences. In technological terms, the new SQ5 leaves its predecessor stuck in a bygone era with infotainment and connectivity being the new benchmark in the premium segment. MMI Navigation plus with MMI touch, an 8.3-inch high-res screen, DVD player (often absent these days) with two SDXC card readers, 3D maps, live traffic info and natural voice recogni-

tion are all standard. The SQ5 comes with Audi Connect, which enables a high-speed 4G LTE connection via a regular data SIM card. There is Google Earth and Google Search. Audi smartphone interface allows use of via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 petrol engine in the SQ5 is an all-new design from the ground up. The new engine produces 260kW, while peak torque of 500Nm is available from as low as 1370rpm. The new SQ5 has achieved a five-star Euro NCAP and Australasian NCAP safety rating, thanks to an impressive array of standard safety features. Included are Audi pre-sense city with autonomous emergency braking and pedestrian detection, up to 85km/h, exit warning, cross rear traffic assist, side assist and blind spot warning. If the car senses a crash may be imminent Audi pre-sense basic has automatic belt tensioning and window closing. Also on hand were Audi pre-sense rear (warning following traffic if they are at risk of running into the rear of the car), parking system plus with 360-degree surround and rear-view camera, adaptive cruise control with Stop & Go, turn assist, Audi pre-sense front (collision warning up to 250 km/h), predictive efficiency assistant and high-beam assist. The sports side of the test car was taken care of by a new 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 engine mated with a quick-shifting eight-speed tiptronic automatic transmission and the iconic, Audi quattro all-wheel drive technology. Such lightning reflexes were made possible by positioning the turbocharger in the 90 degree ‘V’ of the cylinders, thus ensuring the shortest paths for exhaust gases to take. Fuel consumption on the official drive cycle is 8.7 L/100km. During our tests we registered 14.9 litres per 100 kilometres in city suburbs and 6.7 litres per 100 on the motorway. The quattro drivetrain worked in with the newly developed five-link front and rear suspensions, further complemented by the standard adaptive dampers that came up with a comfortable ride, dynamic handling and everything in between via the Audi drive select system.

SPORT Hard knocks power Cats’ comeback: three in a row LOCAL CRICKET Jim Timberlake Three wins on the trot has moved the Geelong Cricket Club into the top eight, a result that seemed a million miles away a month ago. The Cats knocked off Melbourne University last Saturday in a terrific all-round performance with both bat and ball. Taking to the field first, Brenton McDonald (4/28) showed his class, while Keiran Jamieson (2/24) and Josh Cobb (2/40) did their bit, as the visitors were restricted to just 9/196 from their 50 overs. In reply, Geelong were in big trouble early, falling to 2/5, before captain Eammon Vines (83) was joined by Angus Boyd (88), the pair building what was to be a match winning 174-run partnership. Unfortunately both fell before they were able to see their side over the line, but the result was in doubt, a crushing five-wicket win was great reward for the hard work the entire club has been putting in. This weekend sees a double header, away to Kingston Hawthorn on Saturday, before hosting

Melbourne on Sunday. A good weekend of cricket could really cement the club’s spot in the top eight. In the Geelong Cricket Association, Division 1 has a crucial round of games scheduled. The two undefeated teams in North Geelong and East Belmont play the two sides in fifth and sixth position in South Barwon and Lara, meaning the top four could really break away if results go as expected. Meanwhile third-placed Grovedale takes on Geelong City which is fourth. Of course, all of this could still be turned on its head, with the round-three match between Grovedale and South Barwon still under investigation, after Grovedale were later found to have gone over the allocated 40 points allowed for their side under the GCA’s players points policy. Both sides still must wait for the result of an appeal hearing before the winner of the match will be determined. Geelong City v GROVEDALE, ST JOSEPH’S v Leopold, NEWTOWN & CHILWELL v Murgheboluc, NORTH GEELONG v South Barwon, Lara v EAST BELMONT. In Division 2, the match of the round pits topplaced Marshall against third-placed Bell Post Hill,

Season of the easy snapper ON THE BITE Chris Pitman With snapper season in full swing, Clifton Springs was a solid choice last week. Anglers anchored up just out from the Point Richards Channel boated well-conditioned fish to 7kg. Silver whiting was the standout bait. Pike numbers were well up on the nearby spoil grounds, with anglers casting plastics or trolling lures in 5m to 6m, boating fish to 80cm. The same area also produced pinkie snapper and flathead to 45cm. Whiting were widespread along the Bellarine Peninsula, with anglers taking baglimit captures when fishing into the evening. The key was finding the right ground, which was mostly water of 4m to 5m with a mixture of weed and sand bottom. Swan Bay was the place for pinkie snapper to 2kg on soft plastics and bait. The run-in tide was best due to the reduced amount of floating weed. Anglers fishing Swan Bay into the night boated gummy shark to 8kg. Tough baits such as eel worked well. Queenscliff Pier was a hot spot for large squid. Long casts with 3.5-size artificial jigs worked best. A similar approach was also productive on Bell Reef, just around the corner. Queenscliff Harbour continued to fish well for pinkies. The Barwon River estuary had no shortage of smaller King George whiting, salmon and mullet. Small amounts of pippie or prawn on a running sinker rig were ideal. Anglers who put in the hard yards on the estuary boated mulloway to almost 1m. Offshore anglers again enjoyed success on snapper and gummy sharks in 30m, with fish holding from Point Lonsdale to Torquay. Trelly’s Geelong’s Kevin Hunter caught and released a magnificent blue devil fish taken as bycatch. The western estuaries offered plenty of bream, with a wide range of lures and tactics successful. Curdies River had reasonable numbers of bream on the chew when the traffic on the water was light. Trout fishing continued going from strength to strength despite the warming weather. All Western District lakes continued producing brown and rainbow trout. Trolling Tassie Devils in pink #55 with assist hooks was the best approach. Some fish reached almost 3kg and the average was nearly 2kg. Lake Purrumbete fished well for anglers using either mudeye under a float or downrigged lures. A mixture of rainbow and brown trout and redfin were boated. Redfin were also taken from the Barwon River around Queen’s Park. Walking the banks and casting small hard-body lures helped anglers grass reddies averaging 30cm. Next week should provide opportunities for targeting a wide range of species on the spoil grounds off Clifton Springs with soft plastics. Freshwater fishos could keep heading west for trout at the Lakes Bolac and Tooliorook and Deep Lake.

Enjoying the break: Groms enjoy a swell advantage Barwon Heads surfers Ellie Harrison and Zeph Lamperd used their local knowledge to dominate the waves in tricky conditions at Ocean Grove over the weekend. Harrison and Lamperd claimed the under-14 girls and boys titles at the Surfer Groms Comp on Saturday. Harrison used her superior wave knowledge at the break to finally take out top honors, locking in a heat total of 11.40 points. “Every time I have got second at this event, so it’s nice to finally win,” Harrison said. “The waves weren’t very good, but it was a fun event.” Lamperd and Harrison will receive an allexpenses paid trip to the Surfing Australia High Performance Center in north NSW for their efforts. 34 GEELONG INDY Friday, 17 November, 2017

“I can’t wait to get up to the High Performance Centre again and go on their massive skate ramp,” Harrison said. Lamperd was dominant in the final, throwing down massive power turns on his way to a 14.86 heat total. “It’s awesome to win here at Ocean Grove,” he said. “All that time surfing here when it has been windy has paid off. “I have never been to the HPC before, but I’ve heard its epic. I am looking forward to surfing in some warm water and learning from the coaches up there.” Placing in second in the under-14 boys final was Willis Droomer (of Jan Juc) who finished on 12.14 points. Mia Huppatz (Jan Juc) and Elise Franzose (Point Lonsdale) finished in third and fourth. Other winners throughout the event included Willis Droomer (Jan Juc) who impressed judges with his aerial game in the under-12 boys and Isla Huppatz (Jan Juc) in the girls. Remy Filer (Jan Juc) and Ruby Trew (Seaforth, NSW) won in the under-10s and Teal Lamperd (Barwon Heads) won the under-8 mixed competition. Lucas Hickson (Rye) and Sarsha Pancic (Bairgowrie) won the best-and-fairest award for the event, taking home a $250 Woolworths voucher each.
