Trafficker jailed By Cam Lucadou-Wells A trafficker caught with $25,100 cash in a cardboard box and huge quantities of drugs in a rental car in Endeavour Hills has been jailed. Daniella Del Nigro, 28, told police that she was collecting money from a friend in the residential street before she and the Hyundai Accent were searched on 10 October last year, the Victorian County Court had heard. Police seized a commercially trafficable

quantity of meth (135 grams), as well as large hauls of cocaine (32 grams), Xanax and ecstasy and pharmaceutical tablets. Chief Judge Peter Kidd said the accused who pleaded guilty to four charges of trafficking - was “actively involved in selling drugs”. He accepted the former Chapel Street fashion-store owner’s heavy drug habit fuelled the deals, though that was “no excuse”. By 2016, Del Nigro was leading a “chaotic” lifestyle, using drugs daily while living in the

rented car for a month. Before her arrest she had been charged with drug-impaired driving and drug possession. Del Nigro received some credit at the Victorian County Court for her “in some ways exceptional” rehabilitative efforts while on bail. It included seven months in residential rehab and a transitional house, random drug testing, and complete abstinence from drugs. Chief Judge Kidd was “as confident as I can be” in Del Nigro’s rehabilitation prospects as a

recovering, serious drug addict. Her efforts warranted a shorter than usual non-parole period. Her early guilty plea and remorse, particularly for the impact on her parents, was also noted. But her offending was too significant to warrant a community corrections order - on top of jail, the judge said. Del Nigro was jailed for up to four years, two months with a minimum 22 months.

IN BRIEF Separation tree to live on Greater Dandenong will soon be home to a river red gum with a special place in history. The Victoria Day Council offered Greater Dandenong Council a sapling from the Separation Tree. Victorians gathered at the gum in Melbourne’s Royal Botanic Gardens on 15 November 1850 to celebrate news that the state would separate from New South Wales. The tree is estimated to be more than 400 years old but is dying following vandalism attacks. Saplings from its seed were propagated and saplings are now being distributed around Victoria. The council’s engineering services director Julie Reid will accept the plant on behalf of the mayor on Friday 17 November.

Arsonists strike again

Nemanja Cvetkovic with his medals.

Hungry for success By Casey Neill Nemanja Cvetkovic spent nine months feeling hungry and landed in hospital with malnutrition. But the Dandenong 30-year-old said taking home a gold medal from the ICN Australian Muscle and Model Championships made the sacrifice worth it. “I’m currently ranked number one in Australia for men’s physique,” he said. “You’re starving from the moment you wake up. “The more you eat, the more hungry you are. “Your body becomes a fat-burning machine. “You start slurring words, you can’t function and you get so drained.” But Mr Cvetkovic kept his focus on the iCompete Natural Muscle and Model Alliance (ICN Australia) event, held in Melbourne in October. “I lost 22 kilos. I did not know it was going to be that severe,” he said. “I have no social life. “I balance between training and work and university. “It’s very, very hard to sustain a relationship. “You need a very strong individual next to you, someone who’s going to understand you and be there for you. “You’re always tired, and always used up.” Five weeks out from the competition he broke his finger moving a couch and almost had to bow out. He got sick twice because he was so malnourished. “I couldn’t afford the supplements. I ended up in hospital in Dandenong Valley,” he said. His diet and training regimes were meticu-

Mr Cvetkovic started his preparations for the competition with a high-calorie diet. Each day he’d consume vegetables blended with almond milk, oats and protein; chicken, rice and green vegetables; another shake, with kale, spinach, blueberries, mango, kiwi and water; another chicken meal; a beef meal; and 300 grams of Chobani yogurt with 30 grams of peanut butter and a scoop of whey protein. He’d allow himself a cheat meal once a month up until 14 weeks from the competition and would demolish burgers, fries and donuts. “Your sugar levels would spark up and then drop back down,” he said. “That helped me to burn more fat, believe it or not. “Your body gets used to your diet. “It needs a kick in the butt to get it going.” lously structured. A desire to inspire other spurred the personal trainer on. “Going back to the moment when I’m on the stage and when I received the medal, it feels like all that hard work, saying no to all the other foods, doing cardio when I’m pretty much a zombie, being so depleted and not able to function ... all that goes away and you feel fulfilment,” he said. “There’s no greater feeling on earth than that. “Thousands of people are looking at you, being inspired.” He said people told him he’d changed their lives just by stepping on the stage. Mr Cvetkovic came to Australia from Serbia in 1999.

Post-competition he’s “reverse dieting” to reintroduce the calories back into his body. On a training day he eats three whole eggs with 10 grams of butter; 50g whey isolate protein and 20 almonds; 170g cooked beef, 200g sweet potato with cinnamon and green vegies; oatmeal with peanut butter; and a protein shake. Straight after training he eats two LCM bars and 50g whey protein. “It gives you a sugar fix, but a good sugar fix,” he said. “There’s only 1g fat per bar, it gives you right amount of sugar, and it has 7g of protein.” From there he eats 170g beef, two pieces bread and 100g cooked rice, and finishes the day with yogurt with peanut butter and a scoop of whey isolate.

Man charged with driving at police

“We had a very hard life,” he said. Sport and fitness gave him direction and kept him out of trouble. “My entire life I’ve been an athlete, from soccer to hockey to being a boxer,” he said. “That led to body building. “I had to stop boxing, I got quite a bad hand injury.” He also severely damaged his retina. “I see a black dot under pressure,” he said. “It will get worse as I get older.” Mr Cvetkovic received support from his workplace, Dandenong Genesis, coach Aaron Wood from Core Strength and Conditioning in Hallam, and girlfriend Nadine Planko. Next year he’ll try to defend his title, and said he’d stick with the sport for 10 years at most.

A St Albans man will answer charges of reckless conduct endangering life following an alleged run-in with police in Springvale. Police also charged the 30-year-old with traffic offences over the alleged incident on Westall Road on Saturday 4 November. Greater Dandenong Highway Patrol members on motorbikes were called in to investigate suspected hooning about 7pm. They said the driver involved drove towards them before fleeing the scene and dumping his car. Police have seized a car in relation to the incident. The St Albans man was bailed to face Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 13 December.

Attack on quadriplegic A quadriplegic man was found lying unconscious on the footpath following a robbery in Dandenong North, just metres from his home. Greater Dandenong CIU's Senior Constable Antonio Meleisea said a passing motorist spotted the 39-year-old man near the Monash Freeway off-ramp on Police Road about 10.30pm on Wednesday 8 November. He said it was lucky their headlights swept over the victim. “He doesn’t even know how long he was there for,” Sen Const Meleisea said. Call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 with any information.

A suspicious tyre fire caused $10,000 damage at Iveco in Dandenong South a year after a similar blaze threatened the truck factory. Police and CFA crews were called to the fire at the Princes Highway site just after 4.30pm on Sunday 12 November. Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Senior Constable Damien Wigfield said it appeared someone had deliberately lit pallets containing truck tyres and rims after entering through a side security gate. On 3 December last year, security staff reported a fire at the same site to emergency services about 4.45pm and CFA crews brought the fire under control about 7.10pm. Police also deemed that fire to be suspicious.

GO TO STARCOMMUNITY.COM.AU FOR…

“Why does my court case have to go in the paper?“ It’s one of the most asked questions of any publication that reports the trials and tribulations in our courts. The immediate, obvious, and truthful answer is because court cases are inherently interesting. But there’s more at play than that. It’s one of the oldest principles of justice that it must not only be done - it must be seen to be done. And the reasons for that are obvious. Yes, there’s the deterrence factor. But there’s also the aspect of public confidence in the legal system - for example, are penalties meeting community standards? Ironically, those reading their own court stories in the paper often have a view that the media are actually in cahoots with the courts and the cops to penalise the little guy. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, all those parties are watching each other ... like hawks. And that vigilance is key to providing the kind of democracy we live in today ... where the mighty, as much as the little guy, will find their place in print. And, in defence of journalism, it’s worth making the point that we don’t shield our own - when a journalist has their day in court, the pack will turn on them as swiftly, if not more swiftly, than anyone else. Court reporting doubtless causes pain. But there is a greater good at play. Jason Beck

Flying flags action

Leaping into

By Casey Neill

By Casey Neill Dylan Hodge hesitated for a split second, mobile phone in hand, triple zero entered and ready to be dialled. But hearing a desperate woman shout “fire!” prompted the Keysborough man into action. He didn’t think there was time to wait for emergency services to reach the scene, so he ran into the home in North Rockhampton, Queensland. Mr Hodge found an elderly couple in their kitchen, flames extending to the ceiling from a portable gas stove. “The wife was just in hysterics when I got in there,” he said. “I got them into the back yard, away from the flames. “I grabbed the garden hose and put out the fire as quickly as possible.” Victorian Governor Linda Dessau presented Mr Hodge with a Certificate of Merit at the Royal Humane Society of Australasia’s bravery awards ceremony at Melbourne’s Government House on Wednesday 15 November for his actions. “I felt extremely humbled being in the presence of people who’d risked their lives,” the 26-year-old said. “It was a very emotional ceremony. “I never thought in a million years the moment I ran into that house that any of this would happen.” The auto glazier was replacing a windscreen at a home in North Rockhampton, Queensland, one afternoon in October 2013 when he heard the smoke alarm next door sound. The power was out for maintenance so the couple was using an old butane stove to make a cuppa. Leaking gas ignited.

Keysborough man Dylan Hodge with his bravery certificate. 175162 “The husband was trying to put the fire out with a blanket,” Mr Hodge said. “Unfortunately it wasn’t a fire blanket.” The trio were taken to hospital with minor smoke inhalation. Mr Hodge’s boss picked him up when he got the all-clear and he finished the windscreen replacement he’d started before the incident. He took the following day off to recover, suffering with a sore chest from coughing. “My boss came over mid-morning and gave

me a card from the elderly couple thanking me and making sure I was all better and gave me a box of chocolates,” he said. “I was glad to know they were alright.” His father-in-law is a Queensland police officer and successfully nominated him for a certificate of appreciation from the state commissioner in 2014. He has also received a Commendation for Brave Conduct from then-Australian Governor-General Peter Cosgrove.

Flying the Torres Strait Islander flag isn’t an issue that Greater Dandenong Council should be debating, says one councillor. The blue, green and white flag has joined the Australian and Aboriginal flags at the Dandenong Civic Centre after a motion from Cr Angela Long to do so passed without official opposition at the Monday 13 November meeting. But Councillor Tim Dark abstained. With help from Cr Maria Sampey, he’d successfully moved for the proposal to be deferred at the Monday 23 October meeting. They argued that the Torres Strait Islander community should be consulted to avoid offending them. “There were three websites that you could have a look at that said you did not have to have permission to fly the flag,” Cr Long explained after the latest meeting. “The only thing was the colours. They had to be the right green and the right blue. “I’m just glad that it’s gone through. “It should have gone through the first time it went up. “It’s an embarrassment, as far as I’m concerned. “We have three national flags and we’re only flying two of them.” She said Australia had two ethnically different first people - the Aboriginals and the Torres Strait Islanders. Cr Long is on the Inter Council Aboriginal Consultative Committee and said the proposal was discussed for at least six months. She said that Cr Dark’s choice to abstain was “a no vote, straight off”. “I can’t believe that he still has an objection unless it’s a personal one,” she said. But Cr Dark said that “after consultation I had no issues with it”. “I’ve got no staunch opposition against it,” he said. “I believe that we needed to consult.” He said he abstained because he “came to the conclusion we were arguing over something that’s not important to local government”.

STAR JOURNAL 5

LOOKING BACK

Compiled by Dandenong and District Historical Society

100 years ago 22 November 1917 State Election - Dandenong Electorate Victory for Mr Frank Groves Election Day at Dandenong passed off without any great excitement and the returning officer Mr W H A Rodd JP and his assistants were not “rushed” at any time during the day, therefore the task of taking the poll was accomplished in a quiet, businesslike manner, the whole proceeding without even the sign of a hitch. Mr Keast was, unfortunately, confined to his bed on Election Day, but the organising secretary (Mr Rigg) assisted by the local committee, spent a busy day in the interest of the retiring candidate. Considering that there are more than 15,000 names on the roll, the poll of 6678 votes - less than half - is something in favour

of compulsory voting. Electors should certainly have sufficient interest in the results, and record their vote without the inducement of a “free motor ride”. Within 45 minutes of the time of closing the poll, the figures for Dandenong and Cranbourne were posted. Dandenong showed a majority of 202, Cranbourne lead of 54 votes for Mr Groves.

50 years ago 21 November 1967 Soon to be a hostel Nenagh Lodge in Close Avenue, Dandenong, is in the process of being sold to the Dandenong Mentally Retarded Children’s Welfare Association for use later as a hostel for children whose parents have died. It has been the home of the Sword’s family since 1936 and is one of Dandenong’s most gracious old properties.

Set in an acre of attractive grounds and flanked by a swimming pool, it has been the scene of countless functions to aid various charities in Dandenong and many VIPs have been entertained in its spacious rooms. The reception rooms are panelled in oak and blackwood and the home is thought to have been built at least 50 years ago. “I never visualised Nenagh Lodge being a future hostel but I know the wonderful work the Welfare Association does and I feel this is a further progressive step forward for Wallara.”

20 years ago 17 November 1997 Push for overpass at Springvale Junction VicRoads will consider building a $10 million overpass at Springvale Junction. The authority has told Greater Dandenong Council it will review options for the intersec-

tion, which the council’s infrastructure planning manager Mr Brian Kerr says a VicRoads report named as the State’s worst accident black spot.

5 years ago 19 November 2012 City could lose a bit of history Three 90-year-old cottages at 44-48 Scott Street, Dandenong, could make way for 80 dwellings and a cafe. Since August, the applications has been “awaiting allocation” on the planning minister’s planning application register. The attractive row of circa 1923-’24 cottages are not protected by a heritage overlay. Former Dandenong Historical Society president Carmen Powell said: “When the council did a historical study of the area, they didn’t think they were significant enough to be protected.”

Spotlight on air raid drill The late Jack Johnson was the author of When The Clock Strikes, a fascinating account of growing up in Dandenong, his years tending to the city’s pipes and drains as a plumber and bringing up a family with wife Frances in their beloved home in Macpherson Street.

JACK LOOKS

BACK JACK JOHNSON

During World War II, when the air-raid siren at the police station sounded, we would be drilled by the nuns at St Mary’s Primary School to leave the classrooms and lay on our bellies in the small ditches that had been dug around the fence boundaries of the dirt and grass playground. We also had to clench a rubber between our teeth. “What bloody good is that going to do me if a bomb lands in the middle of the playground, or on old Ned Logan’s dunny?” Snake said. The dunny was just over the fence.

One of our mad mates didn’t have a rubber, so he decided to use the one on the end of a pencil he had taken from the girl sitting next to him in the double wooden desks. But he bit down too hard and the rubber came off and he swallowed it. When he started to panic about having a rubber in his guts, another boy told him “lay down you dumb bastard and forget it”. This earned him a punch in the back of the head from Mother Anthony, who was prowling

along the ditches making sure the kids were doing the air-raid drill properly. Sometimes we were marched by the nuns down McCrae street to the block of land on the corner of Walker Street, where air-raid trenches had been dug, and given instructions by a couple of old blokes in tin hats and gum boots with large gas masks and goggles strapped to their chests on what to do during an air raid. They would light a heap of stuff that went off like a large bundle of damp sparklers, then with a red fire bucket filled with sand tell us this was how you put out incendiary bombs. They were called air-raid wardens and patrolled our streets at night, either walking or riding a pushbike, to make sure everyone had their black-out screens on the windows, doors and walls with panels of leadlight in them. One of these old blokes lived in Stuart Street and when doing the rounds carried a torch

about two feet long. He would shine it everywhere like a bloody search light in case he fell down one of the deep bluestone block drains. Dad was not very impressed when he banged on our window in the middle of the night to tell him that when he stood on our front verandah he could see a tiny pin point of light coming from a wall vent in the brick wall. Those vents were a compulsory building regulation as nearly all heating was by open fires, so Dad was annoyed by his order to cement it up. He suggested to the warden that he thought it far more likely that a bomb aimer in an enemy aircraft looking to drop a few on Dandenong would have a much greater chance of spotting the beam of his bloody great searchlight than he would of seeing this almost invisible speck of light under a verandah.

IN BRIEF

Lights to ease pain By Casey Neill

Greater Dandenong Council has “lost its way”, according to Councillor Tim Dark. The Liberal Party-aligned Cr Dark was elected to the majority-Australian Labor Party council one year ago. He spoke out about “funding programs that we don’t need to fund” after abstaining from debate on flying the Torres Strait Islander flag at the Dandenong Civic Centre. “We fund too many programs within the community service sector,” he said. “If they have no staunch economic benefit, we should reconsider the funding.” Cr Dark pointed to subscription fees as the first spending that needed review and said he’d be contesting the cash allocation in the next budget process. He said the $308,400 bill in this area included an $82,000 membership for the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV). “We need to cut down on the crap that we’re spending money on,” he said. “We seem to be spending with no control. “There’s critical community groups within the City of Greater Dandenong that if we gave them $80,000 - the Springvale Benevolent Society for example - it would do a lot more work than being part of a lobby group that’s a toothless tiger. “In this era of ratecapping we need to be fiscally responsible,” he said.

An elderly woman was knocked unconscious during a string of assaults in Dandenong, police allege. Greater Dandenong CIU detectives charged a 21-year-old Dandenong man with affray and assault following seven alleged incidents on Lonsdale Street and around the Hub Arcade between 10.30am and 11am on Friday 10 November. They said a 76-year-old woman was pushing her shopping trolley when she was allegedly struck to the head and lost consciousness. One of the seven victims was transported to hospital with facial injuries. The man was remanded at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Saturday 11 November to re-appear on Wednesday 15 November.

Traffic lights will soon make it safer to use a key Noble Park intersection. The signals will be installed at Heatherton Road, Memorial Drive and Mons Parade next year, the Level Crossing Removal Authority (LXRA) has announced. More than 2000 vehicles now pass through the intersection each morning peak hour. The lights will help cyclists and pedestrians to access the new 17-kilometre cycle path that will run from Yarraman to Caulfield, and motorists to move in and out of Mons Parade. The existing pedestrian crossing across Heatherton Road will be removed. Devlin, 14, lives in Berwick and regularly travels with his BMX to the Noble Park Skate Park where he’s “made a fair few friends”. He says it’s “awesome” that crossing through to Ross Reserve will be easier. “Noble Park is one of the best built up skate parks around,” he said. “There’s always a problem crossing the main road, either way you come, it is a hassle to cross.” Devlin said anything that could make the intersection safer and reduce the temptation to cross illegally was a good thing. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said the skate park was expected to grow in popularity. “It is more important than ever to have safe and direct crossings in place for kids and young people coming to this world-class facility,” she said. “At the moment, locals and traders tell us they get incredibly frustrated; the connections just aren’t working whether you are driving or on foot. “This is about revitalising the Noble Park precinct into a shopping and leisure destina-

Cycle women’s skills spike By Casey Neill From bike repair to Aussie parenting - Wellsprings for Women has it covered. The Dandenong support service partnered with Good Cycles to provide free bike classes for six weeks from Thursday 19 October. Participants will receive one of Good Cycles’ refurbished donation bikes to keep at the end of the program. “Most of us have learned how to ride a bike when we were young,” Wellsprings CEO Dallal Smiley said. “We easily take it for granted but for these women it doesn’t go without saying.” Bike care is a vital part of the program, with participants learning how to fix tyres, strip parts and repair their bicycles. “It is so rewarding to see them grow with every new piece of knowledge they gain,” Dr Smiley said. “This bike maintenance program is extending women in a different direction - and they’re feeling empowered by it. Valerie from Noble Park said she was taking part so she could help her kids with their bikes. “I’m doing it more for confidence-building and to socialise with other women,” she said. Ellaha, from Officer, and Springvale resident Dipdi were trying to fix a bike’s front brake when the Journal stopped by. “I know how to ride a bike. I just want to be able to fix it,” Ellaha said. “It’s an extra skill which is handy to have. “They key is to have patience and not get frustrated.” Wellsprings plans to repeat the program next year if it can secure funding. On 13 November it introduced another new course, called Parenting Lost in Translation. It’s a four-week look at parenting in Australia for women from multicultural backgrounds.

Valerie from Noble Park learns how to put a bike back together.

Dipdi and Ellaha learn how to fix a front brake.

“The aim is to find a healthy balance between accepting and understanding your children’s environment, but also enabling them to maintain their native culture,” Dr Smiley said.

“We all need a little help and advice with our kids every now and then, but for these women who are parenting between two cultures it is even tougher.”

Participation is free of charge and classes will run on Mondays between 1pm and 3pm. Call Wellsprings on 9701 3740 for course bookings and more information.

IT’S NONE OF OUR BUSINESS BUT…

$2.3m Keno win for man A 79-year-old Keysborough retiree has won $2.3 million on Keno at Club Noble. The man, who wants his identity kept private, was unaware that he held the winning ticket until the club’s general manager Mick O’Toole called him on Saturday 4 November. The first thing he did was call his daughter and tell her he was a millionaire. “And she said back to me ‘no you’re not!’. She wouldn’t believe me,” he said. Mr O’Toole said there was a note that Keno had called with information about a jackpot win when he arrived at work. He called Keno to find out the time of the win and figured out who the winner was. “I rang him and said ‘I think you better come down, I think we might have a bit of

prize for you’,” Mr O’Toole said. “I told him the 10 out of 10 jackpot had gone off and it was a $40 ticket, which his was. “He was expecting to win a couple of hundred bucks. “When I scanned the ticket and it said ‘call the Keno service centre’ I said ‘you’ve just won $2.3 million’. “The look on his face was priceless.” The grandad, who owns his own home, said he would use some of the money to improve his house and to travel. “I might have a trip overseas. I’d go to Europe and see Rome,” he said. The winning ticket was a Kwikpik and the winning numbers were 6, 25, 29, 31, 33, 40, 46, 51, 55 and 57.

Flag waving Wurrundjeri elder Aunty Pat Ockwell is “very happy” that the Torres Strait Islander flag has joined the Aboriginal and Australian flags at the Dandenong Civic Centre. She told the Greater Dandenong Council special meeting on Thursday 16 November that the flags were sisters and “they are supposed to fly together”. Aunty Pat said the blue represented the sea, the green was for the islands, black was for the people, and the white symbol was a male headdress.

Sky rail set for addicts

Greater Dandenong’s new mayor brings 20 years on council and three previous mayoral terms to the role. Councillor Youhorn Chea was elected unopposed to the position at the Thursday 16 November special council meeting. “Greater Dandenong is one of Australia’s most culturally diverse communities,“ he said. “I believe it is one of the most vibrant in our country. “I’m very proud to be representing the community and I promise to always do my best for the people that call Greater Dandenong home.“ Cr Roz Blades nominated Cr Chea, with Cr Heang Tak seconding the motion. “You work tirelessly for the Cambodian community, who reverently refer to you as ’Uncle’,“ Cr Blades said. Cr Chea, who came to Australia in 1982 as a Cambodian refugee, said he would use his years of experience and work hard to “achieve good outcomes for our vulnerable community“. “There is always a lot happening in our city but over the next 12 months I am particularly excited about the Springvale community precinct project,“ he said. Outgoing mayor Jim Memeti said his third term as mayor had been a great privilege and he’d enjoyed every minute. He migrated to Australia as a child and has lived in Greater Dandenong for most of his life. “I will always be indebted to it for all the opportunties it has offered me and my family,“ Cr Memeti said. He said he’d watched many major projects take shape over the past 12 months. “Top of the list is the transformation of Springvale,“ he said.

Drug addicts and dealers will “flood” the open space beneath the sky rail in Noble Park, says the Liberal candidate for Mulgrave. Maree Davenport spoke out after the State Government revealed new designs for the parkland created through elevating sections of the Cranbourne-Pakenham rail line on Monday 13 November. “Other than people engaging in anti-social behaviour, who’s interested in ‘hanging out’ under the thundering, busiest railway line nine metres above?” she said. Premier and Mulgrave MP Daniel Andrews said the project would make Noble Park a better place to live “with more trains, more often and new parks, paths and playgrounds for locals to enjoy”. The level crossing removal project will do away with those at Heatherton, Chandler and Corrigan roads by the end of next year. Mr Andrews said this would create new spaces for locals to socialise and exercise, a 1275 square metre fenced dog park, walking paths and 100 extra car spaces for commuters. But Ms Davenport said claims the project would benefit the community were “outright lies”. “Local residents have told me their concerns about the structure becoming a magnet for drug pushers and crime,” she said. She said “drug pushers” could catch the train to sell their wares to the young people who hung out at the aquatic centre and skate park in Ross Reserve. “People will be visiting the designated youth precinct for all the wrong reasons, deterring locals from using these great existing amenities,” she said. “We will see an increase in local crime, robberies and assaults as addicts flood the area for their next fix.”

Mayor back again

New Mayor Youhorn Chea. Cr Memeti unveiled the refurbished Springvale City Hall in October, as well as Keysborough’s new Tatterson Park pavilion, the Allan Street bridge in Dandenong and the Mayor’s Youth Employment Taskforce action plan. “I hope I made the residents proud and they feel that I have served them well,“ he said. Choking back tears, Cr Maria Sampey said Cr Memeti had always been a leader to her. “You’ve really helped me to be assertive,“ she said. “You’ve really made me get my mojo back so I can really achieve.“ Crs Tim Dark and Zaynoun Melhem reflected on their first 12 months in the role, following their election in October last year as the only two new faces among 11.

“I’ve known Youhorn since I was seven years old,“ Cr Melhem said. “For 20 years he’s been a great leader for the community.“ Cr Matthew Kirwan said it was an exciting time to be a mayor from Lightwood Ward, which has Springvale at its core. “I actually think it’s the age of Springvale,“ he said. “It’s a booming suburb.“ Fellow Lightwood Ward representative Cr Sean O’Reilly said Cr Chea was “one of the most resilient people I know“. Cr Memeti said Cr Chea was “probably the most sincere and decent person I’ve met on council“.

Medical condition probe into flipped car Plea heard By Casey Neill Police are investigating whether a medical condition was behind an Endeavour Hills collision that flipped one car onto its roof. Casey Highway Patrol and CFA crews were called to Power Road about 7.20pm on Monday 13 November. Leading Senior Constable John Diamond said a Honda Odyssey station wagon was travelling south and allegedly crossed the dividing line. Heading in the other direction was a black Volkswagen. “The driver noticed the oncoming vehicle travelling towards her onto the wrong side of the road,” Ldg Sen Const Diamond said. “She has sounded her horn to warn the driver and pretty much immediately took evasive action and steered to the left to avoid a collision.”

He said it appeared the Honda struck the Volkswagen’s rear driver’s side tyre, causing its driver to lose control. The vehicle rolled over near Kennington Park Drive. “We’re investigating whether there was a medical condition that caused the car to cross onto the other side of the road,” Ldg Sen Const Diamond said. The driver received minor injuries and her male passenger was not injured. An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said paramedics treated a man in his 70s at the scene for a minor chest injury and took him to Dandenong Hospital in a stable condition. A CFA spokeswoman said eight trucks attended the scene. It was originally reported to emergency services that there was a car on fire but crews quickly determined that was not the case.

The Education Minister is considering a Keysborough community plea to save their park. Residents contacted Greater Dandenong Council after learning that Chandler Reserve on Chandler Road was considered part of the disused Maralinga Primary School block. Councillor Roz Blades reached out to Keysborough MP Martin Pakula, who said he understood that community members didn’t want to lose the park in the Education Department’s imminent sale of the site. “I’ve been advocating strongly on their behalf,” he said. “I’ve raised their concerns with the Minister for Education and he is looking into the matter, and I will update the community as soon as possible.” Phillip Brown lives adjacent to the park and said hundreds of people used it each day for health, wellbeing and recreation. He said the council had maintained the reserve for community use for more than 40 years through a deal with the Education Department. “The park is used for fitness due to the encircled walking track by many young people, mothers with babies in prams and many elderly persons,” Mr Brown said. “The open area in the middle is used frequently for flying kites, football, soccer, rugby and the walking of pets. “The playground equipment is also used by hundreds of children.” He started a Facebook group to rally residents and asked the council to intervene. Cr Blades said: “The government can still sell the school - which they intend to do - but this is an area that’s separate, outside that the community loves. “That’s why some of the residents bought in that street. “They wanted to be near the open space for their kids.” Maralinga closed following a merger with Chandler Park Primary School and was demolished earlier this year.

Kathy Burgstahler Real Estate has four unique properties including a vacant block of land which are currently for sale in Loch Sport - just three hours’ drive

BUSINESS PROFILES

Facey celebrates its 100th The Facey name has been synonymous with real estate in Dandenong and the greater South East for 100 strong years. Facey celebrated the milestone with an elegant affair, filled with ceremony and nostalgia. Third generation of the Facey namesake Andrew Facey joined Mark Bond and the directors from Facey Industrial Commercial to cut the centennial cake and reminisce about his family’s proud achievements at ARCO restaurant in Dandenong South on Thursday 16 November. Facey Industrial Commercial is honoured to uphold the legacy of what the Facey name has brought to Dandenong and take it forward into the next 100 years and beyond. The stories that were shared on the night by a room full of pioneers delivered real insight into those that are truly responsible for shaping the Dandenong and the South East into the metropolis of today. Mr Bond said: “It’s the people that made and continue to carry on the Facey legacy.” He went on to quote another Facey, Aus-

Free entertainment will keep the kids amused.

Street party has the lot It will be a street party with all the trimmings as the community at Villawood Properties’ Marriott Waters celebrates the launch of its display village on Saturday 25 November with a free family fun event. Visitors are encouraged to take a stroll down Seachange Parade and explore the 23 beautiful homes showcasing what Villawood’s builder partners have delivered in the Marriott Waters Display Village. The village will be a hive of activity between noon and 3pm with each of the 13 display builders providing free entertainment for families - perfect for keeping the kids engaged while parents seek out their dream home. There will be plenty to keep families fuelled including coffee carts, food vans, sausage siz-

zles and more. In addition to kids’ arts and crafts, henna artists, face painters and balloon artists, there will be a range of activities and incentives to entice parents, from a Christmas styling session with Chris Carroll from The Life Creative, thanks to Metricon (bookings essential), through to a suite of generous offers available exclusively to Marriott Waters Display Village purchasers. The Marriott Waters Display Village is located at Seachange Parade, Lyndhurst. The grand opening will run from noon to 3pm on Saturday 25 November. tralian writer and World War I veteran Albert Facey, from his 1981 book A Fortunate Life: “I never worried about trying something different or having a go at something. I have always believed that if you want to do something you usually can.” Such words resonated well with the audience and it speaks true to the culture at Facey Industrial Commercial today. It’s a can-do attitude that inspires team members and engages clients. Frank Facey took a chance in 1917 when he created something from nothing. Director Graham ‘Josh’ Kendall opened his speech with the remark: “Had Frank Facey carried on with his coachbuilding business, we wouldn’t have a business today.” The room erupted with laughter and that set the tone for the evening. Guests from the early days and current, business partners and clients alike, they were all there to celebrate and honour the Facey family.

Enjoying the celebrations with warm words for friends and colleagues were Director Mark Bond, Partners Matt Rice and Andrew Facey, and Director Graham Josh Kendall.

DANDENONG SHOW

The call of the country By Casey Neill “Stop milking! Step away from your cow!” It’s a phrase not commonly heard in suburban Dandenong, but once a year the country comes to town and brings with it these catchcries. The Dandenong Agricultural and Pastoral Society held its 146th annual Dandenong Show at Greaves Reserve on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 November. Dandenong Show cattle chairwoman Melissa Ferris, armed with a microphone, instructed the dairy competitors as they showed off their cattle’s milk-producing ability. There were 27 entries in the dairy section this year, Ms Ferris said, and beef entries were up on last year at about 33. “Every class had four to eight head in it, so it was quite competitive,” she said. “There’s eight exhibitors in the dairy section and there were about 15 exhibitors in the beef section.” Melissa is married to former show president Ricky Ferris. They met at the show as children. Her grandmother, Winsome Anderson from Nar Nar Goon, said her family had been showing at the event for 127 years. Melissa and Ricky brought their son Austin along this year. Melissa’s brother Patrick, 16, won junior champion for the first time. “We have four generations of the same family here today,” Ms Anderson said. In the animal nursery, curly-haired toddler Paddy marches across the pen and abruptly bends over, his short body contorted in half and his head almost touching the hay-strewn floor. “Hello, goat!” he says to a thankfully-subdued kid. Bentleigh couple Katie and Andy couldn’t wipe the smiles from their faces as their son made new animal friends. “He’s already had a go on the rides,” Katie said. “He loved the dogs. He sat there for about 45 minutes watching them.” Andy said: “He was a bit of a fan of the scones as well.” Andy is from Sydney and had never been to the show. Katie used to go when she was little and growing up in Dandenong North, and relished the chance to introduce her son to the event. Asked which animal was his favourite, Paddy didn’t need to ponder. “The chickens!” he exclaimed with a grin. The committee halved entry fees and offered half-price ride ticket periods to entice attendees and bolster declining crowd numbers. Dandenong Show president Sue Glenn said: “There was a very positive vibe out there.” “We’re very, very pleased with the attendance.“ Ms Glenn said police were happy with crowd behaviour. She thanked the show’s volunteers and sponsors.

Cash for the pink cause A sea of pink flooded into Club Noble to raise cash for a good cause. Shirley Bradshaw and Barbara Webb hosted the 12th annual Pink Ribbon Breakfast at the Noble Park venue on Monday 23 October. The Noble Community Tennis Club members have raised about $30,000 for breast cancer research over the years. “We started in 2005. My mother died from breast cancer,” Ms Webb said. “My sister’s had a breast removed because of it. “Shirley’s daughter-in-law also had breast

cancer, and we know so many people with it.” They were having a coffee at a play centre with their grandkids one day and came up with the fund-raiser idea. Fifty people attended the first year, and every event since has sold out. “People re-book for the following year,” Ms Webb said. “Most have come to every event.” About 127 people attended this year’s event and enjoyed a continental breakfast. “We get everything donated,” Ms Bradshaw said.

Entry was a pink note - $5. Ms Webb said they’d considered upping the cost to boost their fund-raising efforts. “But our demographic here is a lot of elderly people,” she said. “This might be their only outing for the year.” Companies donated items for a raffle and silent auction, the Noble Park Football Club donated money from its pink lunch, held in May, and Club Noble donated cash from a Mother’s Day raffle. The organisers expected the morning to bring in about $3000 altogether.

Jo’s Cakes in Keysborough has supplied pink-iced cakes for the past decade. She is a cancer survivor and even continued to bake in support while she battled the disease. Eunice Padfield from Lynbrook has attended almost every breakfast and is known for her bright pink cowgirl hat covered in pale pink feathers. She used to drive for the Australian Open and received it from a player who didn’t want to lug it home. “You wear as much pink as you can,” Ms Padfield said.

Guidance through garden By Casey Neill Quirky, colourful gardens are working wonders for children and parents at QEC in Noble Park. The Queen Elizabeth Centre in Thomas Street is celebrating its 100th birthday this year. The centre provides support, care and guidance to parents with children aged up to four years who are experiencing difficulties from sleeping and feeding to mental illness. Launching its Jona Sensory Children’s Garden on Wednesday 31 May was the first event to mark the milestone. The day featured photo and memorabilia displays and fun exploring the garden. There are tyres that make musical sounds when stepped on, a xylophone and a sand pit. Plastic bottles filled with water of different colours hang from a tree. Kids - and the young at heart - can turn taps on and off and watch water flow through a created mini-creek bed. Mirrors ensure there are no blind spots. Ti tree will grow into a space to explore, fake turf and real grass provide interesting textures, and plants are hardy to withstand little feet. “We want the kids to be able to run through it,” QEC systems and risk manager Janelle Crossett said. The Jona Sensory Children’s Garden was stage one of the QEC Therapeutic Gardens Masterplan. A bequest from the estate of Walter and Alwynne Jona in 2013 prompted the project. QEC refurbished its internal courtyards in 2015. State two will be a family recreation, woodlands and kitchen garden area. A staff retreat area, welcome garden and day program garden are scheduled to follow by 2020.

The newly-painted entryway.

QEC board chair Mary Sayers tests out the new garden features with Victorian Governor Linda Dessau.

A family enjoys the new garden area.

QEC hopes to share the new spaces with neighbour TLC Aged Care and even open it to the public on days when the centre is closed. Staff are being trained in encouraging visitors to make the most of the gardens, and Deakin University is studying the effects. QEC started as a baby health centre in North Richmond in 1917, developed into a nurse training ground and in 1934 became a registered public hospital. Its focus shifted toward at-risk children as nurse training moved out of hospitals and into

Participation in the 10-day residential program is by Victorian Child Protection Service referral. QEC’s outreach program includes 12 weeks of home visits to help with sleep, settling and more. Qualified nurses also triage calls for help and some parents might just need advice over the phone or from the QEC website, while others are referred to more intensive programs. To donate to QEC or volunteer, call Janelle Crossett on 9549 2705.

the higher education sector and in 1986 became QEC. The centre moved to its purpose-built facilities in Noble Park in 1998. Families can live at the centre’s 16-room ward for five days to receive intensive help from nurses, social workers, psychologists and more through group sessions and activities. As well as the five-day residential program, there’s a Day Stay workshop and an eight-week therapeutic playgroup program called Playsteps.

Big man up through ranks By Nick Creely Standing at 200cm, Dandenong Stingray draft prospect Tom De Koning is a towering figure capable of becoming an elite ruckman at AFL level. As he steadily develops his game, putting on size and delivering more consistency throughout matches, the left footed big man could be anything at the elite level. The AFL Academy member - who also represented the ‘Rays at TAC level and Vic Country in the National Championships - utilized his athleticism to get around the ground during 2017, in a season he described as a bit “up and down”, despite enjoying some strong form during the middle parts of the season. “I probably came into the season with a few high expectations, and a lot of improvement through the pre-season with the AFL Academy and programs such as that,” he said. “Unfortunately, I started the season average and I just looked at ways I could improve my overall game each week, and focus on that - I think I’ve improved on certain aspects each week and again, unfortunately, I got injured.” With De Koning viewed as a ruckman with the ability to spend time down forward - similar to that of Sydney’s Kurt Tippett - he believes he has what it takes to adapt his style to AFL level. “I played all my juniors as a ruckman and didn’t really spend as much time down forward this year, and it was new to me when I did play as a forward as a 17-year-old, but I learned really quickly,” he said. “I played more in the ruck this year and it was really good for me. “I already learnt as a younger player how to play that position and I enjoyed getting amongst it more and having an impact in that area.

Tom De Koning is eagerly anticipating 24 November's AFL draft. 168489 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS “I’ve just hit the 200cm mark so I’m bringing my game to a new level. “I think I can be a ruckman at AFL level but need to probably put a bit more weight on but it’s what the clubs see me as, I’ll happily play

any role at that level.” With so much speculation as to where the youngsters sit in the draft pool, De Koning has steered away from the “talk”, rather focusing on things within his control.

Training hard to get into the swing of it By Nick Creely Noble Park teenage baseball sensation Mohi Kahui continues to make waves as one of the most talented players in Victoria. After claiming gold earlier this year at the Under 16 National Championships as part of the Victorian side, the 16-year-old faces a new challenge after recently being selected for Victoria’s Under 18 team in January 2018. Playing his summer baseball with Waverley and winter baseball with Balwyn, Kahui can’t wait to get stuck into the Under 18 National Championships in Sydney from 5 to 14 January. “I’m feeling really positive, and just training hard on and off the field, and I’ve been working really hard for the last 10 months,” he said. “I’m looking forward to it (the championships) - it should be another good experience, and it’s a big opportunity for me playing with the older boys, because I’m under age. “The (Victorian) side is pretty good, all we need to do is play as a team, not as individuals - we will go far if we do that.” While Kahui can swing a bat better than anyone in the side, a certain skill makes him stand out among the rest. “My biggest strength is outfield catching of the ball - you have to work really hard because you don’t know where the ball is going, and you have to check where the wind is going,” he said. Kahui trains twice a week, and is relishing the chance to learn his craft off some of Australia’s elite. “We train two times a week, on Monday and Wednesday, and on Wednesday we train with the Melbourne Aces, one of the best teams in Australia, so that’s really good,” he said. “Training with them is great because you see what level you need to be at to make the MLB.” And he’s also a product of the Hallam Senior College, a famous sporting school that has produced many elite athletes in different sports. “They have a really good sports program there, they have around five sports programs the top one is rugby, because they select all the Melbourne Storm players from my school,” he said. 36 STAR JOURNAL

“I’ve been fortunate to have other things taking up my time, which is school, so I guess focusing on school has helped me this year. “It’s helped me not dwell on how I’m going, or where I fit into the draft pool, which is unpredictable and subject to change every day,” he said. “I think I’ll go to my brothers and take my mind off it (on draft night) - I don’t really want to watch it, and have to sit there and wait, I’d rather just be told if I’m going somewhere.” While De Koning went down with injury in the latter stages of the TAC Cup season - robbing him of the chance to push his case to clubs during the finals, he has discovered a new perspective. “It was unfortunate to go down with injury and the pointy end of the season, and it was a bit hard on everyone at the club, my family and myself. “I did everything I could to get it right and spending six weeks without physical activity was pretty hard on me and it messed up my school and footy routine a bit,” he said. “I’ve spent a lot time studying to get my mind off the injury, and got back into surfing which is something I really love, and it helps me clear my head and remains a big part of me. “The injury feels great, and I’ll be back into full training next week to get my fitness back, it’s all really exciting.” PLAYER PROFILE POSITION: Ruck/Forward DOB: 16/07/1999 HEIGHT: 200cm WEIGHT: 90kg DRAFT RANGE: 40-Rookie

Injury hurts for Blicavs By Nick Creely

The Dandenong Rangers’ worst fears were confirmed last week with star player Sara Blicavs rupturing her ACL in a bitter blow to the WNBL side and the Australian Opals. Scans last Monday confirmed the extent of the injury, with the star playmaker expected to miss up to 12-months as she recovers. Making matters worse, Blicavs will not only put a dent in the Rangers’ attempt to back up their WNBL grand final appearance in 2017/18, but she will also play no part in the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, where she was a big chance to be part of the Opals squad representing Australia. With only about 90 seconds left in the first half during the Rangers’ clash with Adelaide Lightning on Friday 10 November, Blicavs landed awkwardly and played no further part in the match. The Rangers confirmed the prognosis through a statement on their website. “Everyone within the Dandenong Basketball family would like to wish Sara the best of luck in her recovery journey, and will be behind her offering our support at every step of her return to the basketball court,” the statement read. “Always the brightest and bubbliest personality in the room, Sara’s absence will definitely be felt for the rest of WNBL18 but we have full confidence that she will return stronger and better than ever in the very near future. “Sara will begin that recovery journey tonight with a very capable orthopedic surgery team.” Blicavs had enjoyed a strong start to the WNBL season after enjoying one of her finest seasons in 2016/17. dandenong.starcommunity.com.au

Thunder loyalty strikes By Nick Creely

Star Thunder striker Brandon Barnes has signed on for NPL 2018. 164362 the club, who will embark on his first senior coaching role. “Ever since Andy came to the club as an assistant coach, we got on like a house on fire - we had a coffee last week, and it was good to have a chat with him, so I’m really looking forward to learning what I can off him,”

Barnes said. The club has also confirmed the re-commitment of players such as Fraser McLaren, Zois Galanpoulos, Josh Bragg, Sam Catherine, Veton Korcari and Nick Modaffari, as well as bringing in Nick Glavan (Bentleigh Greens) and Josh Pugh (North Geelong) from rival

clubs to bolster their overall depth. “From what I gather, there is a good vibe around the club - not only as a club are we excited to be back in the top flight, but other clubs are excited to know Dandenong Thunder are back,” Barnes said.

For star Dandenong Thunder striker Brandon Barnes, it all came down to loyalty in his decision to sign on for NPL 2018 down at George Andrews Reserve. With the Thunder returning to the top flight of NPL football next season, Barnes - who is widely regarded as one of the finest strikers not playing in the A-League - is delighted to continue to share in the journey with his teammates. “It took a few weeks to get the deal done and get the ball rolling, and I’ve always looked forward to putting pen to paper when the time was right,” he told the Journal. “Loyalty was number one for me - ever since I’ve landed in Melbourne, I’ve had a lot of love from everyone around Dandenong Thunder.” Despite signing on for the Thunder, Barnes admits the outside interest from other clubs was fairly strong. “I had a few offers from other NPL clubs which was nice to know they had interest in me, but it was right for myself, and for my family, to stay where I am,” he said. “I did think about it (leaving), but the Thunder feels like home to me.” After claiming back-to-back NPL 2 best and fairest awards in 2017, as well as the Golden Boot after a 35 goal season, Barnes admits it wasn’t his best year personally, and warned all opposition he is ready to fire in the top tier. “For someone to not feel like you’ve had the best season, and then to just win the lot like I’ve done, shows a lot really,” he said. “People would probably be scratching their heads, and thinking about what I’d be like at my best, but following on to next season, I’m happy to be playing better opposition and teams. Bucks the only bats to fire By Nick Creely DDCA TURF 1 - ROUND 4 (DAY ONE) A flurry of wickets and a storm looming for hours - It certainly wasn’t a day to be a batsman in the DDCA’s top tier on Saturday. With just one team reaching the 200 mark across the grounds on day one, bowlers certainly had their way, no more so than down at Arch Brown Reserve. The star studded BERWICK elected to bat against HEINZ-SOUTHERN DISTRICTS, and were immediately greeted by impeccable line and length from Cobra openers Kashuyla Weeraratne (3/65) and Michael Davies, who orchestrated the early wickets of Adam Watson (2) and Ryan Williamson (4). Darren de Souza (21 off 145 balls) and Matt Chasemore (25 from 60) dug deep, putting on 29 runs in almost two hours, before Jackson Philipin (1/18) found the edge of Chasemore’s bat to leave the home side reeling at 3/37. Despite a solid 25 to Jarrod Armitage, and cameos from skipper Jarrod Goodes (20) and Cory Bevan (24), Davies proved almost unplayable, snaring 6/33 from his 18 overs to roll the Bears for just 146. James Wilcock (3/3) and Goodes (2/15) then tore the visitors’ top order to shreds, leaving the Cobras 5/32 at stumps. Down at Carroll Reserve, ST MARY’S are in the box seat after a dominant opening day against DANDENONG WEST. After the Saints sent the Westers in to face the music, spin twins Kaushyla Gajasinghe (6/30) and Ruwantha Kellepotha (3/23) played the conditions perfectly, ending the visitors’ innings on just 102 in 72.3 overs. The Saints are 1/10 at stumps. BUCKLEY RIDGES were the only team to pile on the runs, with the Bucks slamming on 269 against HALLAM KALORA PARK. After Daniel ‘DJ’ Watson (57) fired early to

Greg Todd continued his fine form for Buckley Ridges with a classy 88 against Hallam Kalora Park. 174919 give the Bucks a perfect start, in-form Kiwi Greg Todd (88) anchored the innings superbly, despite top class bowling performances by Will Whyte (5/67) and Thalivan Xavier (4/75). CRANBOURNE and NORTH DANDENONG is also evenly poised with the Maroons bowling the home side out for 150.

David Bell (4/18) and Asfan Thajudeen (3/38) had the Eagles scratching around the crease all day and hardly looking comfortable. At stumps, the Maroons lost an early scalp, and they will resume at 1/0 as they look to put together a consistent batting performance after some shaky moments in the opening

rounds of the season. In the round’s other matches, DINGLEY (3/58) steadied after a stumble late in the day to be sitting comfortably against NARRE WARREN (139), and SPRINGVALE SOUTH (7/162) and MORDIALLOC called stumps early after the storms set in.

Aston Dee Bee confirms Cup favouritism Series favourite Aston Dee Bee scorched around Sandown Park to qualify fastest for the world’s richest greyhound race on Friday night. Heavy rain before the first race did little to dampen the enthusiasm of the big crowd trackside for what shaped as one of the most eagerly anticipated TAB Melbourne Cup series in recent years. Aston Dee Bee was the shortest priced favourite in the TAB Melbourne Cup heats and didn’t disappoint those who took the short odds ($1.60), overcoming a modest jump to stop the clock at 29.12. It continued a remarkable run of form for the Seona Thompson trained sprinter that has seen him finish in the money at each of his last 14 starts. Kennel mate Bewildering will also take his place in the final after a stunning performance to win his heat in 29.35. Widely regarded as the fastest greyhound in the country, the two-time Speed Star winner

showed fantastic determination after a poor getaway to power away from his rivals. Familiar foes Striker Light (29.37) and Up Hill Jill (29.43) will meet for the ninth time in next Friday night’s final after both recorded impressive wins in their respective heats. Striker Light bounced back to her brilliant best after two disappointing runs, leading all of the way to give her a chance to land her third group one win. Up Hill Jill was made to work had for her victory by 2016 TAB Melbourne Cup champion Ando’s Mac, showing great tenacity to reach her sixth group one final. The ledger between the two great rivals stands at four wins apiece, though Up Hill Jill commands a 3-1 advantage at Sandown Park. The two greyhounds, born just two weeks apart, are separated by just $2,396 in career prize money and a win by either greyhound in next week’s $420,000 to the winner final will catapult them to fifth place on the all-time prize money list.

A year after sharing Melbourne Cup glory with his great mate Jason Mackay in last year’s Cup, Anthony Azzopardi has an opportunity to win the Cup in his own right after Adelaide Cup winner Raw Ability blitzed his rivals in 29.20. He set up his dominant victory with a stunning 4.95 first split - less than a length off the great Fernando Bale’s record - turning in what his conditioner described as ‘the best run of his career.’ Kouta Mayhem delivered his trainer Jason Sharp his biggest thrill in the sport by winning the night’s opening heat in 29.57. With a large group of family and friends cheering him on, he proved too good in holding out last start group one winner Crash Bandicoot in a thrilling run to the line. Glenn Rounds’ powerful sprinter Chasin’ Crackers scored in the night’s penultimate TAB Melbourne Cup heat, railing powerfully to win in 29.40. The baby of the field at just 27 months of age, Chasin’ Crackers has already been placed twice at group one level.

Aston Dee Bee scored a dominant Melbourne Cup heat victory on Friday night.

MOTORING

Hot-blooded Italian racer brake system and lane departure warning. Acceleration is brilliant. Dial up Dynamic mode and our red Alfa screaming off the line after only a few moments of turbo lag. Overtaking is ridiculously easy. The sound of the V6 is muted by the turbochargers, a common problem, but it does reach more exciting levels when accelerating hard in D and R modes. For more information contact Berwick Alfa Romeo, 257 Princes Highway, Hallam. Phone 9554 0800.

Naturally there are traditional twin circular dials on the instrument panel, however they are too small for our liking. Easy enough to read, but not theatrical enough, we reckon. The bright red starter button on the steering wheel is a great touch. We just love the green four-leaf clover badge sitting between the V of the engine. The 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 sits well back under the carbon-fibre bonnet, the peak 375 kW is reached at relatively low revs (low for an Italian machine) 6500 rpm. Redline doesn't kick in till 7000. Transmission is by a sports eight-speed torque convertor automatic to the rear wheels. Alfa's DNA (Dynamic, Normal, Auto) driving modes are crowned by a Race mode - sold only in the QV. An 8.8-inch multimedia screen may sound large, but it's way too skinny and the satellite navigation isn't particularly easy to see be-

cause of that. Satellite navigation and climate controls operate through a centrally mounted rotary dial that's simple to use with minimum inattention. A Harmon Kardon 14-speaker sound system sounds great and it’s almost worth parking the car in a scenic location during the early Sunday morning run on your favourite driving roads to fully appreciated it. It’s no surprise that the all-new Alfa Romeo Giulia has a five-star EuroNCAP rating. This redhot Italian machine is taking on highperformance models from Audi, BMW, Jaguar, Lexus and Mercedes at their own game. Alfa Romeo’s Giulia Quadrifoglio Verde (QV) sports sedan is the real deal. Rear-wheel drive, Ferrari-inspired 500 horsepower (375 kW) twin-turbocharged engine that gets it to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds. It reset the Nurburgring production sedan lap record at just seven minutes and 32 seconds. After getting to the 100 km/h in the threesecond bracket, it gets to a top speed on the far side of 300km/h. Keeping weight down is a major way to increase performance and the QV has hotformed steel, aluminium and carbon-fibre components to keep its mass down to 1525 kg. Having reduced weight the next challenge is to spread it 50:50 front to rear, something else the designers have achieved. Quadrifoglio is Italian for four-leaf clover and has been the symbol for Alfa racing cars for almost 100 years. More recently, the tag has been given to its high-performance road cars. The Giulia Quadrifoglio body has serious sports items that include a large central grille and air intakes, cooling slots on the bonnet and serious side skirts. And possibly the most aggressive rear diffusers on the road today. It sits on19-inch forged alloy wheels Thankfully our test QV was painted in a brilliant shade of red. Inside, black leather-wrapped surfaces with red stitching are used in the upper area with a deep red shade in the lower section. Aluminium and carbon-fibre highlights add to the appeal.
