MORE TO LOVE The editor’s desk I had the pleasure of being part of the ‘Warwick Egg Throwing’ reenactment on Saturday, playing the (non-speaking) part of a reporter, which allowed me to snap the action close-at-hand. Despite a drop of rain and a couple of microphone issues - there’s always a minor problem or two at these events - the re-enactment went brilliantly. It was a real testament to the ability of the volunteer cast - directed by Donna Page of the Warwick Community Performing Arts group to bring this historic event to life for the benefit of the hundreds of locals and out-of-town visitors alike who were in the audience. Months of preparation were behind a performance which lasted around 15 or 20 minutes, but it was all well worth the effort. Well done to the cast and to the Southern Downs Steam Railway for their assistance in making this event happen. It commemorated a decisive moment in both Warwick’s and Australia’s history and those involved did the Rose City Proud. Jeremy Sollars, Editor.

Gina Rinehart’s Hancock Prospecting has quashed a rumour it has purchased the former Parmalat factory in Warwick. Rumours have been flying thick and fast in recent weeks that the former dairy processing facility on Victoria Street in Warwick had been bought by Ms Rinehart, following her purchase of Warwick’s Maydan feedlot back in June. Hancock Prospecting spokesman Adam Giles has told the Free Times that ‘Hancock has not purchased’ the Parmalat site.

It has been speculated locally that Hancock Prospecting might utilise the old Parmalat site as part of its beef product distribution network. Maydan Feedlot accommodates both short-term and long-term custom feeding, and is licensed to carry 8000 standard cattle units, specialising in providing feeding strategies for premium beef producers. Speaking at the time of the Maydan purchase in June, Ms Rinehart said the acquisition “continues the company’s pursuit of integrated investments in the cattle industry focused on optimising the

The Southern Downs Regional Council received more than 100 surveys from users of the Warwick Saleyards sharing their views on its future operation. The council released the survey seeking “opinions on the saleyards future management options” from its users on Monday 6 November, despite already considering a preferred but as yet unknown tenderer for potential external leasing and management of the saleyards. The surveys were due back to the council by last Friday 17 November. A council spokeswoman said council had received “over 100 saleyards surveys back and thanks all those who took the time to respond”. “The Saleyards Advisory Committee will now begin the process of considering that information and will then make a recommendation to council regarding the operation of the saleyards,” the spokeswoman said. Expressions of Interest (EOIs) for external leasing and management of the Warwick Saleyards opened on 30 May and closed on 11 July, with the council announcing it had chosen a ‘preferred respondent’ from among the outside parties who lodged an EOI. The identity of the ‘preferred respondent’ has not been publicly released and the council is yet to put a timeframe on a final decision on leasing out of the saleyards despite being asked to do so on numerous occasions by the Free Times - and it is not known when the Saleyards Advisory Committee is due to meet next. Mayor Tracy Dobie has previously stated that “while council has run the saleyards effectively to this point, professional, experienced management is necessary to ensure best practice”. ●

ttention is rightly focused on this weekend’s Queensland election, but there’s one person around here for whom the outcome is already a done deal. Lawrence Springborg is calling it a day in state politics, bringing to an end his tenure as our region’s representative on George Street in Brisbane, which has spanned nearly three decades. He’s seen all the highs and lows of political life since first being elected to State Parliament at the tender age of 21, on Saturday 2 December 1989, when he won the old seat of

And it’s to home - the Springborg family farm at Yelarbon - that he’s headed after his retirement as an MP takes effect at midnight on Saturday. While speculation in political circles continues over a possible shot at Canberra - specifically, the Senate, should a casual LNP vacancy arise between now and the next Federal election, or at that election itself, whenever it is held Springborg is adamant that politics has lost its lustre for him.

time in their marriage. The Springborgs have four children - Megan, 25, Jens, 23, Laura, 20 and Thomas, 19. “I salute my wife for putting up with me being away - she basically raised our children in my absence,” he says. “I worked out that in the roughly 10,000 days I’ve been in state politics I’ve been away from home for about 7500 of those. “I used to have five conversations on the phone every night when I was in Brisbane - I mean how many times can you have the same conversation about what happened at school today? “The family really haven’t known any alternative.” The Springborg’s eldest three children are making lives for themselves away from Yelarbon - Megan is in Tasmania, Jens is in the army and Laura is a teacher - but Thomas may be the farming hope of the side, he’s at uni studying agriculture and to use his father’s words he’ll “get some experience in ag away from the farm”, but a succession plan is being formulated. When asked if he’s close to his children, Springborg says he’s “not any closer (to them) than any other father”, but regrets missing out on kids’ sport and other activities, thanks to politics. “But I’m no different in that respect to people like truck drivers and people in the military,” he says, while also making it clear none of his offspring have political ambitions of their own. POLITICAL HIGHS AND LOWS As well as stints as Queensland’s conservative leader and as health minister in the Newman LNP government, Lawrence Springborg will also be remembered as the ‘father’ of the LNP in Queensland, having successfully negotiated the merger of the Nationals and Liberals back in 2008.

That was ahead of the 2009 election, which saw the LNP come up just 11 seats short of government - and making Springborg premier. While the conservatives had their largest swing in 14 years, they failed to make enough ground in Brisbane, leading some in the party to speculate if Springborg had perhaps been “too country” for Brisbane voters. The man himself denies this was a likely factor, saying that in the last decade or so in Queensland politics, the idea of a “long-term government” had ceased to exist, with more voters tending to swing between the major parties rather than being “bolted-on” to one or the other - and acknowledging the rise of alternatives like One Nation. He also pointed to the conservative comeback in 2004, an election they went into with the Nationals having just 11 seats and the Liberals a mere three. As for the relatively short-lived Newman Government in which Springborg served as health minister - kicked out of office in 2015 after a history-making victory three years earlier in 2012, Springborg is philosophical, gently dodging a question about whether or not Campbell Newman is on his Christmas card list. But he did admit that some of that government’s decisions - like sacking a lot of public servants while necessary, in hindsight could have been handled better. He believes that after being health minister Queensland Health was “not the page one basket case that I inherited” and is proud of “re-focusing” that department during his tenure. The only non-farming role Lawrence Springborg has accepted for the time being is as patron of Griffith University’s Institute for Glycomics, which is developing a malaria vaccine for international use. Other than that it’s back to the farm. “You’ll see me at the Warwick sheep sale pretty regularly,” he laughed. “Carting a load of lambs every few weeks.” ●

He denied that he was bored with state politics when the question was put to him - after three unsuccessful tilts at becoming Queensland’s premier, in 2004, 2006 and 2009 as the Nationals and later LNP leader - and said the Southern Downs electorate had always been the most important thing to him. But to use his words, the “thought of travelling to Canberra, being away from home again for long periods, it doesn’t really blow my hair back”. At the same time, he refused to absolutely rule out future political options - he’s a politician after all - saying “your destiny, or your destination, is where you end up”. “Look, I’ve had Canberra journalists ringing me asking me those questions, there’s been a lot of speculation,” he told the Free Times. “You get to your destiny through a combination of chance and opportunity. “I’m totally comfortable with my decision to leave state politics, you just know internally when it’s time to go, there’s no regrets. “I didn’t want to end up the way I’ve seen others end up, you know, burnt out and surly. “I’ve still loved the electorate stuff, but I’m a bit over the parliamentary stuff, including the travel. “I’ll see where my mind is down the track, but the idea of federal politics, I can honestly sayw it doesn’t enthuse me in any way, not today, not in six or 12 month’s time. “It’s been a huge privilege to represent this electorate I’m not one of those politicians who uses their electorate as a stepping stone.” Springborg says his immediate plan is to head back to the farm, which, he says, has become somewhat “dilapidated” thanks to his long absences, and do some travelling with wife Linda, who he laughingly says has “mixed feelings” about him being at home full-time, effectively for the first

With this weekend’s Queensland election poised to be a cliff-hanger, the local candidates representing the major parties have outlined their party’s priorities for our local seat of Southern Downs in the event their side forms government. James Lister of the LNP and Joel Richters of the ALP will vie with Independents Rob Mackenzie and Jay Nauss, One Nation’s Josh Coyne and Antonia van Geuns of The Greens in the election this Saturday 25 November. Mr Lister said electricity prices were “number one”, adding families and pensioners were “struggling to pay their power bills these days, and that left people with less money to spend in town”. “And if you’re working hard in small business, say a butcher a retailer, or a cafe, or you’re a farmer pumping water for irrigation, high electricity prices makes it harder to make ends meet,” he said. He said an LNP government “will show genuine leadership on electricity prices” through major reforms including a new lowemission coal-fired power station, scrapping Labor’s 50 per cent renewable energy target and restructuring the government-owned power companies from two into three for greater competition. Mr Lister said LNP priorities for employment would include a $5000 per business ‘Queensland Apprenticeship Boost’, a $500 ‘Tools for Tradies’ voucher

QUEENSLAND ELECTION

COULD THE INDEPENDENT CALL THE SHOTS? BY JEREMY SOLLARS The man with the most realistic chance of causing an upset in the seat of Southern Downs this Saturday says if he wins as an Independent and there’s a hung parliament scenario he’ll “sit down” with both major parties and hammer out the best deal for the region. With the very real prospect of neither Annastacia Palaszczuk’s ALP or Tim Nicholls’ LNP gaining a working majority after this weekend’s Queensland election, the spectre of a hung parliament in the Sunshine State has reared its head once again. And if that’s the outcome, Independent candidate for Southern Downs Rob Mackenzie could find himself and other Independents at the centre of negotiations over forming a new government in Queensland - if he were to get over the line. On paper our own seat of Southern Downs appears rock-solid LNP, with their candidate James Lister at least theoretically the most likely to head to George Street in Brisbane as our next MP, replacing LNP veteran Lawrence Springborg who is retiring from state politics. The LNP held Southern Downs by what would seem to be a bulletproof margin of 19.2 per cent at the 2015 election, and a Lister win seems all but inevitable. At least on paper. But born-and-bred Goondiwindi local

Independent Rob Mackenzie chatting to a voter at Saturday’s egg throwing reenactment in Warwick. and councillor Rob Mackenzie has been campaigning with an energy normally seen in the most marginal of city electorates, and the word on the street is he could cause an upset. The Free Times understands Mr Mackenzie - a former LNP member who quit the party after they declined to endorse him as their local candidate - has the backing of many formerlystaunch LNP voters in Southern Downs, including some currently-financial local LNP branch members. Those LNP stalwarts are understood to be unhappy with James Lister’s endorsement as the party’s candidate,

on the basis he is not a long-term local - having previously been an RAAF officer based at Amberley - and having been, to use their words perhaps ironically, “parachuted” into the ‘safe’ seat of Southern Downs by the party machine. Mr Mackenzie this week considered the hypothetical scenario of being one of a handful of Queensland independents in a new parliament faced with deciding which of the major parties to support, in order to give them a working parliamentary majority. “I can’t answer that at this point,” he told the Free Times. “If that were to happen - and I’m not gilding the lily - I’d be wanting to sit down with both of the major parties and have a good conversation about what’s in it for Southern Downs, if I were to support them. “Obviously I am conservative by nature but would be more than willing to work with Labor to ensure the best deal for this electorate.” Mr Mackenzie is swapping preferences at this weekend’s election with One Nation’s Josh Coyne, the only other locally-born Southern Downs candidate. He said he plans to start election day by handing out how-to-vote cards at Talwood and then “working my way east”. He’s planning to get back to Goondiwindi around 7.30pm on election night and have “a quiet night with the family”, awaiting the local result - and his political fate. ●

Jay Nauss has been cycling the huge Southern Downs electorate during the campaign.

JAY'S POLLIE PEDAL Jay Nauss has been campaigning via pedal-power and while a rank outsider for the seat of Southern Downs, it hasn’t slowed him down. He dropped in to the Free Times office last week after cycling from Stanthorpe and on his way out to Inglewood. When asked how he would direct his supporters to distribute their preferences - if he is their ‘number one’ vote - Jay said it was “up to voters to make up their own minds on how to fill in their ballot paper”. “The voter has the right to number the ballot in any way they want, filling in each square with a number,” he said. “It’s sad that so many people don’t understand how the preferences work.” ●

QUEENSLAND ELECTION

HOW TO CAST YOUR VOTE In April 2016 the Queensland Parliament approved a bill to replace optional preferential voting in state elections with a full preferential voting system - which means numbering EVERY box on the ballot paper in your preferred order. If every square is not numbered, your vote may not be counted. To make your vote count under the FPV system you must number all candidates in order of your preference. You must: Place a one (1) in the box beside your first preference; a two (2) in the box beside your second preference; a three (3) in the box beside your third preference; and continue numbering until all of the boxes are numbered. Instructions for completing a formal vote are always on the ballot paper. Polling booths across Southern Downs will be open from 8am to 6pm on Saturday. For a full listing of local polling booths visit www.ecq.qld.gov.au/ elections/2017-state-general-election. · Keep up to date with the latest local results on election night on Saturday online at www.freetimes.com.au and on the Free Times Facebook page. ●

WHO ARE OUR LOCAL CANDIDATES? The ballot paper order for our Southern Downs electorate is as follows: 1. James Lister (LNP) 2. Joel Ritchters (ALP) 3. Rob Mackenzie (Independent) 4. Josh Coyne (One Nation) 5. Jay Nauss (Independent) 6. Antonia van Geuns (The Greens) ●

ROB(BING) LNP OF SURE WIN? BY JEREMY SOLLARS From a media perspective, the local State Elections campaigning in Southern Downs has been full of interest. Not the least because this time around the electorate has a long-standing local MP in the form of Lawrence Springborg leaving state politics, which opens things up a bit in the otherwise rock-solid safe LNP seat. I am not going to pick the winner of the local contest here. On paper, the LNP looks almost certain to win, but Independent Rob Mackenzie has been campaigning furiously and clearly relishing his underdog status. Some local political tragics are tipping a Mackenzie upset. I guess we’ll find out soon enough if they’re right. I’ll make some genuine observations about our local candidates, and in no way am I suggesting to readers to whom they should award their vote. This is with my impartial journo hat on and in a kind of ‘form guide’ format ... James Lister (LNP) The front runner on paper. The LNP won Southern Downs with a 19.2 per cent margin at the 2015 election. Lister seems unbeatable, but no previous political form and not a ‘born-and-bred’ local, which could work against him. A nice guy and has been everywhere during the campaign. Campaigned with full backing and resources of the LNP machine. Rob Mackenzie (Independent) The ‘roughie’ of this political race. The

Independent Rob Mackenzie.

The LNP’s James Lister.

former LNP member failed to gain endorsement as the party’s Southern Downs candidate and quit the party as a result. Has political form as a serving Goondiwindi councillor. Has campaigned as though his life depends on it. Seems to thrive on the ‘underdog’ status and talks well ‘off the cuff ’. Can he go the full distance on the day? Remains to be seen. Josh Coyne (One Nation) Despite One Nation polling strongly across regional Queensland, local Southern Downs voters may well be asking, “Josh who?” Virtually zero public profile and has been all but invisible during the campaign. Seems like a nice enough bloke though, the couple of times I’ve met him. Into campdrafting and born and bred in the region. Hard to see him going the distance here but the hardcore One Nation voters will help, and he’s

done a preference deal with Mackenzie. Joel Ritchters (ALP) Was endorsed by the party two weeks ago, on the morning of the ballot draw. Reflects the ALP’s normal attitude to Southern Downs, ie find the name of someone with a pulse to put on a ballot paper. At least he’s based in Goondiwindi. The last bloke, as I recall, was from somewhere up the Sunny Coast. Affable and well-spoken. But let’s face it, he has no chance. Jay Nauss (Independent) Veteran political candidate and regular writer of letters to the editors of local media outlets. Impressive cycling ability. May bring in some votes from Stanthorpe but a real outsider. Antonia van Geuns (The Greens) Lives in Toowoomba. Not sure if she’s ever been here. Or knows where Warwick and Stanthorpe are. Enough said really. ●

MARANOA SAYS ‘NO’ BY JEREMY SOLLARS

Visit us every day for the latest news and like us on Facebook “Australians have spoken and resolved the law should be changed to allow samesex couples to marry - it’s now up to elected representatives to organise the legislation and I’ll play a constructive role to make sure it meets society’s expectations. “Religious freedom and if samesex marriage would be included in our education system were consistently raised with me as areas of concerns so, as the Maranoa MP, I will make sure my electorate’s strong voice will form part of this further debate.”

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s commitment to introducing legislation in Federal Parliament before Christmas to enable same-sex marriage was in doubt this week as wrangling over religious protection and parental rights in the legislation began. Conservative federal politicians, including Treasurer Scott Morrison, are insisting the new law incorporate such protections, with parliamentary debate likely to push adoption of same sex marriage legislation early into the new year. ●

The Federal Electorate of Maranoa returned a ‘no’ vote to the same-sex marriage survey, with the results released last week. Member for Maranoa David Littleproud said he would use his vote in the House of Representatives in line with the electorate’s result. “While Maranoa didn’t return the highest ‘no’ vote in Australia, survey results revealed 56.1 per cent of Maranoa voted no, and I will use my vote according to my electorate’s wishes,” Mr Littleproud said. He said his personal decision was to vote ‘no’ but that he had always said he’d “listen to Maranoa and vote according to the majority”. “In Maranoa, I believe the debate was respectful and considerate and, in my electorate, 78.2 per cent of eligible voters returned their survey compared to the Queensland participation rate of 77.9 per cent,” he said. Across Australia, 61.6 per cent voted in favour of same-sex marriage, with a national participation rate of 79.5 per cent. In the House of Representatives, 17 federal electorates returned a no vote out of 150 seats. “Regardless of the result, we stick together in the bush. If there’s a flood or fire - no matter your background or lifestyle - we’re all standing side-by-side filling sandbags or volunteering to help the whole community,” Mr Littleproud said.

PHOTO MYSTERY SOLVED AT LAST BY JEREMY SOLLARS A wedding photo from the 1960s which was unearthed during home renovations at a Swanfels property has been returned to its rightful owner. Last week we published the photo - of a bride with her two bridesmaids and flowergirl - which was discovered in the bottom of a cupboard during bathroom renovations at the home of Kevin Byrne at Swanfels, east of Warwick. The identities of those in the photo were a mystery to the finders of the photo - but no more. It turns out the photo is of Warwick’s Gloria Baker, the bride, and her bridesmaids Fay Lawson and future sister-in-law Janice Baker, and flowergirl Leanne Sanders (nee Chant). Gloria married George Baker at St Mark’s Anglican Church in Warwick on Saturday 2 February 1964, and the photo was taken at the Haig Studio on the day. Gloria dropped in to the Free Times to collect the photo this week and while she is happy to have it in her possession, she has no idea how it ended up at a property out at Swanfels. “I am intrigued - but there were copies of the photo sent to relatives and others who weren’t at the wedding, so there’s any

number of ways it could have ended up out there,” she said. Both George and the bridesmaids have passed away but Gloria’s memories of the day she married her beau and how they met are still as fresh as ever. Not to mention checking him out cruising Warwick’s main street on his motorbike, fresh in from his home town of Texas, before being properly introduced. “They used to have roller skating in the pavilion at the showgrounds and that’s where we first met,” Gloria said. “But before we actually met I used to see this guy on his motorbike going up and down the main street when I finished work at Sabas, next to where Duggans camera shop is now. “I thought he looked alright.” Evidently George felt the same, and he and Gloria were married for 50 years and have three children - Darryn, who lives in Rockhampton, and daughters Paula (Day) and Tracey, who both live in Warwick. Thanks to Gloria getting in touch - a mystery solved. ●

TIPS FOR THAT JOB INTERVIEW

Gateway To Training (GTT) offers one-on-one support for young jobseekers.

PUTTING SKILLS TO WORK Gateway to Training (GTT) and Transition to Work(TtW) can help in the move from school to work, which is not always easy. Maybe you didn’t finish school or maybe you just have a lot of other things going on. Either way, you might need more help to get the right skills to find a job. You might even need support to sort out your other concerns before you can think about working towards your dream job.

The TtW program, supported by the Department of Employment and the Department of Social Services and Human Services, provides intensive, preemployment support to improve the work readiness of young people aged from 15 to 21 years and helps them into work or education. This includes apprenticeships and traineeships and is designed to assist on many levels. GTT has offices in both Warwick and

Stanthorpe and youth workers who are able to work one-on-one with participants to assist with preferred career options. They can also help to address potential employment concerns. If you would like to be part of this exciting program and would like more information to see if you are eligible please contact GTT Warwick on 0456 008 449, Stanthorpe 0456 008 372 or on 4671 2258.

1. Know where you’re going. This one might sound obvious, but many people leave home without the address or their contact’s name. Write down the address and the name of the person you’re meeting (and their phone number if you have it), or put it in your phone. Look up the address on a map in advance so you know exactly how to get there. Make sure you check the timetables if you’re getting there on public transport. 2. Don’t be late! Give yourself plenty of time to get there so you’re not flustered and sweating. Aim to arrive at the interview at least 15 minutes early. 3. Dress to impress. Even if you’re going for a job where you’ll have to wear a uniform or overalls and get down and dirty, make sure you’re wearing clean and ironed clothes. That way you will appear committed and professional. 4. Bring your resume. Take a copy of your resume with you and refer to it during the interview if you need to. Read over it on the way, or while you’re waiting for the interview to start. 5. Do your research. It’s important to know the company and know what the job requires. If you can, visit their website and see what they have to say about themselves. Do a search for them online to see if they’ve been in the news. If you can, try to find other people who work for the company so you can ask them some questions. Source - www.youthcentral.vic.gov.au

The kitchen has a stainless-steel oven and dishwasher, and plenty of bench and storage space. The tiled dining area leads through to the lounge room with reverse-cycle airconditioning. All bedrooms have ceiling fans and vertical blinds, two have built-ins and the main has a great walk-in wardrobe. The double lock-up garage with entrance straight into the house also houses the laundry with access directly to the back yard as well. THE SPIN

PAINE, MARSH NOD AMID ASHES As we put the finishing touches on Spin this week, I have one foot and a new hip half way out the door on my way to the Gabba for the opening game of the Ashes tour. Previously, you would have an eye on the sky trying to read the weather patterns. Now even I can operate the weather app on my phone and have my fingers crossed that there are only minimal interruptions to play if any. For Aussie cricket fans, it has been a week of revelations following the announcement of the side for Game 1. While it is unfortunate that we won’t be seeing Matt Renshaw at the crease, his replacement Cameron Bancroft literally has the runs on the board. I can’t think of a recent selection that has caused as much controversy as the inclusion of Tim Paine and Shaun Marsh. Paine has been for years widely regarded as the best in the country with the gloves and gets a left field call up after struggling with hand injuries for several years. I doubt he will let the side down. Obviously, the selectors see something in Shaun Marsh that many of us are missing. Personally, I think he is fortunate to be there, but that’s probably why I’m spectator and not a selector. This must be make or break for the Marsh who has made more comebacks than Dame Nellie Melba. The likely Australian game breakers at the Gabba, I feel, could be Usman Khawaja and Peter Handscomb, and on the bowling front it is hard to go past Mitchell Starc and, of course, Nathan Lyon. It would be foolish to underestimate the value of Josh Hazlewood who has shown a previous liking for conditions at the Gabba. Don’t doubt that the Poms will be up for the challenge with or without Ben Stokes. There are some top class wielders of the willow in this side if they get going. Ashes series always bring out the best in both sides, there is just so much history involved and every series adds another layer. 2017/2018 will be no exception. So as the batsman takes mark and the umpire calls bowl - the fun will begin and there will be another chapter in the making. My new spare parts and I are hoping we can successfully navigate the grandstand stairs by the end of play and don’t become an unintentional part of this latest chapter. - Casey MEDALLISTS BEAT CONDITIONS AND ALL COMERS Winners of the Month Medal competitions over the past 12 months played off last for the Medal of Medallists. Hayden Smith played another consistent round to claim the win and added his name to the Roy Carnell trophy sponsored by the Carnell family. Smith who won the July monthly medal finished the front nine in Saturday’s competition with a score of 39 and had an inward nine of 40 to wrap up the win. It was a very good score when you consider the entire back nine was played in continual rain. In The ladies’ Medallist of the year, it was Madeline Jarman who handled the conditions best to finish with nett 81. Not only did Jarman have to contend with the rain she also had to last out a countback when fellow qualifier, Nikki Waterworth, also returned a nett score of 81. Madeline, by the closest of margins, collected the honours and the trophy sponsored by Tom and Tric Fittock. Competition for the day was also the first monthly medal of the new season players vying for the Poole’s Produce trophy 22 SOUTHERN FREE TIMES

CLARKIE - GONE BUT UNLIKELY TO BE FORGOTTEN

Clarkie - A good one gone, but never forgotten. sponsored by Howard and Adele Poole. Hayden Smith has started the new season on a winning note ensuring he will be in the firing line in another 12 months. Runner up to Smith was Charles Seeto with nett 69. Jennifer Spark won the Ladies division with a nett score of 76 for the round. Both winners, Hayden and Jennifer, returned best gross scores on the day as well as least number of putts for the round. Pin shots at three and 17 went to Charles Seeto. Max Hunter held the pin at 12. Propins went to John Spiller at 1/10, Angelo Maugeri at 5/14 and Darryl Boekholt at 9/18. Neta Thouard had the best approach at17 for the ladies. It was a day of finals on Saturday with the final of the Captain’s match also decided. It was young gun Billy Webb taking on the more experienced Mark McCosker in the final match of the event. After a very close match, it was Billy Webb who took a narrow 2/1 win over McCosker. There are only two major winners on the Stanthorpe Golf Club calendar that are yet to be announced and they are the Men’s and Ladies’ “Golfer of the Year”. The winners will be announced at the club’s Christmas party which will be held following play on Saturday. Those eligible for consideration are the players who have played regularly through the year and scored consistently according to their playing handicap. The men’s Player of the Year is sponsored by the Apple & Grape Motel and the ladies’ by Gracious Giving. The event this Saturday is the Delaney Family 4BBB medley Stableford. It is a shot gun start at 11.45am with registration closing at 11.30 am. For catering purposes, organisers remind those planning to attend the Christmas party to add your name to the list on the noticeboard at the clubhouse. GREENS IN TOP ORDER The greens at the Stanthorpe Croquet Club are looking sensational following the work

Thursday, 23 November, 2017

Many on the Granite Belt and Southern Downs were shocked and saddened to learn early last week of the unexpected death of Graham Clark or Clarkie as he was better known. If you didn’t know Clarkie personally, but are a regular reader of Spin you would have seen and read of his exploits at Sporters golf in Stanthorpe. He was a stalwart of the club for years, and it is only several months ago that he pulled up his tee and retired his clubs. To say Clarkie was a character is the greatest of understatements. He and his sexy black Volkswagen breezed into Stanthorpe from his home town Murwillumbah in the late 60s and never left. I fondly recall trips to the football in Tenterfield in that black VW with Clarkie. I wonder how many realise that golf loving Clarkie served as secretary of the Stanthorpe Rugby League back when the earth was flat and there was the odd dinosaur roaming the streets. There would not be one acquaintance that wouldn’t have at least one or more that was done on them recently and of course the more recent rain. It was a group of enthusiastic association croquet players who stepped out onto very green greens last week. Pat Schnoor was called on again to coach newcomer player Bron Southgate around the court. Jenny and Peter Tunbridge scored 16 hoops, to win their game against Joy Newman (12). Play was a little slow, as Peter a relatively new player, was ably guided around the court by his experienced wife Jenny. Grace Howard partnered Sharyn Roser to score 17-16 win over Andrea Denkewitz. Grace in great touch, Sharyn not so much, but they combined nicely to claim a narrow win. The keen golf croquet group played last Wednesday. In the first round, Justin Liddy (8) and Sharyn Roser (5) beat opponents Val Fancourt (4) and Elaine Brown (2). Liddy played some outstanding shots scoring hoops from long distances and at acute angles. Shirley Page (8) and Di Wren (2) outlasted Marian Castle (6) and Bev Sullivan (3) in a very tight game to claim a victory. Judy Lock took Val Fancourt’s place after the morning tea break to even up the numbers and partnered Marion Castle in a game against Elaine Brown and Justin Liddy. Brown (10) and Liddy (3) scored a comfortable 13-5 win. Di Wren scored some very fancy hoops in her second game of the day. Her partner Bev Sullivan also had some well-aimed long shots for a total team score of 13. They too had a convincing win over their opponents Shirley Page (6) and Sharyn Roser (3). Another small group of players took to the court on Thursday in the newest format played in Stanthorpe, ricochet croquet. As is to be expected with a newly introduced game, there were a few queries regarding the rules in the unfamiliar situations. Players are learning on the fly but seem to enjoying the challenges of the new format. New faces are always welcome to join players in any of

Clarkie tales - most of which would definitely not make the cut in this column for censorship reasons. Clarkie was certainly not an advocate for political correctness and like the rest of us had his fair share of foibles. He will however be remembered as a bloke with a big heart, fair and helpful in business and a larrikin on and off his beloved golf course. His wife Shirley is herself not in the best of health, and the O’Connor family extend our sincerest condolences to both her and her daughter Fiona, son-in-law Damian and their children. A memorial gathering will be held on Sunday at the Stanthorpe Golf Club from noon where family friends, Sporters and Clarkie’s many customers will have the opportunity to share some of those untold stories. I have no doubt that Clarkie rocked up to the pearly gates last week with his favourite golf club in one hand and a glass in the other asking for directions to the nearest fairway and bar. R.I.P. Mate the formats. WARWICK FIXTURES ABANDONED The weather gods played havoc with many sporting events across the Southern Downs last weekend. In the Warwick cricket competition, all teams shared points as there was not one game where a result was achieved due to the weather conditions. In the game scheduled for Slade Park on Saturday between Wheatvale and Sovereign Animals, Sovereign scored 6/93 off 20 overs before play was halted. Tim Drennert had top scored with 22 while S. Jones had bowling figures of 2/6 from only four overs. Maryvale’s Mitch Drayton was 44 not out when rain interrupted the game and Rascals Jake Christensen had picked up 3/97 from seven overs. Players, officials and organisers will be hoping for a brighter outlook this weekend. ROSER CLAIMS A WIN On a morning where Sporters were equally as keen to beat the rain as they were the scoreboard, it was Terry Roser who did best claiming another Sunday morning win. Tony Steele was next best, claiming the runners-up spot while the run downs went to Rod Pettiford and Dick Hilton. Paul Armstrong also had a good round finishing with the Best Gross. He also took the pin shot on the third hole and the pro pin. Terry Roser topped off the day by winning a meat tray. Dick Hilton didn’t leave empty handed leaving with the other meat tray. All members of the Sporter Golf Club were saddened to hear of the passing of long term member Clarky and attend their sincere condolences to the Clark. (R.I.P Clarkie.) If you do not already have December 10 in your little black book as the Sporters Christmas party then it is time to do so. It is sure to be another fun filled day and if you are planning to attend please advise organisers by December 3. All members of Sporters Golf offer our sincere condolences to the Clark family on the passing of Clarky, a long term member of our Club. R.I.P Clarky. freetimes.com.au

WATTLE BE WILL BE The Wattles Rodeo was another event to fall foul of the weather. A great deal of planning and preparation by the previous and new Wattles committees had gone into the event, but of course there is little you can do if the weather gods are against you despite an army of volunteers being ‘shovel ready’ last weekend, according to club president Glyn Rees, Rees commended rodeo organisers Scott and Chantelle Keogh for their extraordinary hard work in setting up the Rodeo and in particular the very novel ‘Rodeo Clinic’ for youngsters. Despite the conditions, it proved very successful with 60 kids participating in a variety of activities highlighting the popularity of the sport. There were a group of highly credentialed rodeo riders who assisted, providing tuition in the clinic and Rees was full of praise for their efforts. The Junior Rugby league clinic organised by A Grade Coach Travis Burns also proved popular with youngsters despite being forced indoors due to the wet weather. Burns and many of the current A Grade players passed on their skills and knowledge to the large group of young footy enthusiasts. Special guest at the event was former New Zealand International and former Eagles team mate of the coach Steve Matai. Matai and his family drove from Pottsville especially to assist with the clinic and proved a hit with the kids. After much discussion and a great deal on weather watching, the decision to cancel the rodeo was made, however organisers were thrilled so many people stayed on in the clubhouse and enjoyed the evening. The Wattles committee had earmarked this event as their major fund-raiser for the upcoming 2018 season and while it was in some ways a disappointing result, financially a fuel raffle arranged by Travis, Kristal and Mandy Burns in conjunction with Black Toyota provided a welcome spike

CASEY O’CONNOR

early on. However, as the game progressed the ball got wet and muddy and lost a lot of its early venom. The highlight of the Wanderers innings was the return of Andrew Einam who with some uncharacteristic big hitting notched up 51 runs. Wanderers captain Mitch Drayton once again proved a lynch pin for the side scoring 20 runs. Wanderers finished with a creditable 8/122 - in trying conditions. Bowling honours were shared by Steve Martin and Damian Anderson both snaring a pair. It was not all smooth sailing for Valleys and there were some jitters throughout the innings when their run chase looked a little vulnerable. Reliable batsman Alistair Middleton held the innings together, scoring 60 not out while Anthony Marino added a handy 27 runs when they were needed. In the end, Valleys chased down the target in 23 overs losing only four wickets on their way to what turned out to be a comfortable win. HOW THE TEAMS ARE TRAVELLING IN STANTHORPE Midway through the Stanthorpe season, Souths are looking like the team to beat. After a couple of seasons of solid rebuilding, Souths now have a good balance of youth and experience. Star of the Souths show is undoubtedly Jordan Lanza. Lanza poses a threat to all sides with both bat and ball in hand. This is no one man band however. The youngest of the Lanza brothers, Liam was the leading wicket taker last season and has improved with the bat. Another youngster to shine with the ball and gaining a reputation as a game breaker is Harry Williams. Although he is regularly mentioned for his efforts with the ball he is another who is handy with the bat. The side is capably led by Captain Ben Staley whose always somewhere near the top of the table as a run scorer. Paul Carriage is another

who has been a noticeable run scorer at the top of the order. RSL is fortunate to have at the core of their side the experience of the Dowie brothers, Luke Brady and Duane Lihou. Added to that line-up are several younger players who are quickly coming of age this season. Josh Wren is one such player and now opens the bowling for his side. Jason Lawer and Greg Mackenzie when they are available also add strength and experience to the side. As some of the younger players in the side gain more experience through the season, expect to see RSL’s name there when it counts at the pointy end of the season. Valleys have a very strong bowling lineup headed by Damian Anderson and Steve Martin. Sandro Steffanon, Kirby Morunga, Anthony and David Marino ensure that opponents rarely get a reprieve when batting against this side. The majority of the side can hold their own with the bat but with top order bats Alastair Middleton and Curtis Allen someone needs to step up and fill the void. The batting skills of this pair are sorely missed. Tenterfield have been a fixture in the Stanthorpe competition for several years now, and in that time have shown a good deal of improvement. Once considered the competition easy beats, they have progresses to a side that can beat anyone on any given day if they look a little brittle. Wanderers are a side that will need all the stars to align to threaten this season. New captain Mitch Drayton has be very consistent so far this season. There are a couple of youngsters who will in time develop into match winning players. Waylen Aldridge and Brock Patti spring to mind. The return of Andrew Einam for last week’s game added some much-needed starch to both the batting and bowling line-up. Wanderers desperately need a few of their former game breakers to pick up the bat and ball and give the younger generation a hand.

Umpires inspect the wicket on Sheehan Oval before calling off the game on Saturday. in the financial outcome. President Glyn Rees thanks all those who had assisted and there were plenty none more so than past president Neil Phelan who did a lot of work towards the event with the past committee and also provided his own cattle for the event. The committee will consider a rerun of the Wattles Rodeo over the coming months, and promise to keep everyone informed.....It will be a case of “Watch This Space!” VALLEYS PICK UP FRIDAY NIGHT WIN The Stanthorpe cricket fixtures last weekend were just another sporting event to be disrupted by the weather. Saturday’s games were cancelled, however, Valleys and Wanderers were able to get in a catch up game on Friday night under lights at the CF White Oval. After continuous drizzle for most of the week and some heavy showers, players faced a sticky surface that was always going to be tricky. Valleys gambled on the state of the wicket and sent their opponents in after winning the toss. It proved to be a good move with runs proving hard to come by
