Non-perishable food items can be dropped off at Barry Plant, Emerald. 162417
Teamed up for Christmas Barry Plant Emerald has once again teamed up with local community groups to help families in need at Christmas. The drive seems to get more successful each and every year, allowing the event’s coordinators to spread the cheer a little further.
St Mark’s and St Luke’s churches do a fantastic job, packing the collected food into hampers. As always, the wonderful community comes together to help.
Last year, the food drive managed to collect enough food to make up and deliver 61 hampers full of goodies to local families, just in time to make their Christmas a little brighter. This year, they’re hoping to make it
even bigger. With your help, they can make that happen! If you have any non-perishable food items, please drop them into Barry Plant Emerald before Friday 15 December.
We’re proud to be working alongside community groups & helping out local families in need this Christmas!
If you’d like to contribute, please drop off any non-perishable food items to the Barry Plant Emerald office. We will be collecting through to 15th December.

Santa soon By Wendy Williamson The busiest night of the year is fast approaching for Santa Claus and his little helpers. The jolly man in red will soon be gearing up his sleigh and coming to town, but not before he has replied to thousands of Santa Mail letters from children across Australia. Australia Post is urging children to post their letters early to ensure Santa has plenty of time to reply. “Christmas is a very special time of year at Australia Post, and it’s also our busiest as we send thousands of letters to the North Pole,” said Australia Post Head of Media Michelle Skehan. Ms Skehan recommends writing a letter to Santa as an easy way for children to practise their letter writing skills and how to address, stamp and post a letter. “If you get stuck, Australia Post has some
helpful letter writing tips and templates on our website,” she said. To ensure Santa and his helpers receive your letter, send your letters and wish lists to Santa, North Pole, 9999, with a 65-cent Christmas stamp on the front of the envelope. Don’t forget to write your name and return address on the back of the envelope so Santa knows where to send his reply. Letters received nice and early with names and return addresses clearly marked on the back will receive a postcard reply from Santa. Santa Mail letters can be placed in either a dedicated Santa Mail box found at most post offices or any red street postbox. Children can pick up free Christmas postcards and write to Santa on the spot at selected post offices. This year, for the first time, children can track the progress of their letters online via the Australia Post interactive Santa Mail tracker at auspost.com.au/santa-mail.
so if you're thinking of Buying, Selling or Renting, pop in for a chat!
Writing a letter to Santa may be a great way to get on the 'nice' list.

Still giving in our libraries By Wendy Williamson The Christmas spirit of giving and forgiving is alive and well at Casey Cardinia Libraries (CCL). For the second year in a row, in the lead-up to Christmas, the library service has established Forgiving Trees at all its branches. Over the next few weeks, Casey and Cardinia residents are invited to go to their local library and contribute items of food or unwrapped gifts for people in need of support. What is more, if donors have library fines, CCL will waive their fees in acknowledgement of their generosity. Casey Cardinia Libraries CEO Chris Buckingham explained: “This is the season for giving, and we want people across our community to know that if they pay it forward and help out others, we will return the favour.” The Forgiving Tree is a golden opportunity for library members with overdue items or fines to wipe the slate clean and feel good about it. However, anyone is welcome to contribute. All donated items will go to local charities. At Emerald, Barry Plant Real Estate is kindly partnering with the library to distribute goods through Emerald Uniting Church and St Mark’s, Emerald. There is already quite a collection of gifts under the Forgiving Tree at Emerald Library. The campaign continues until 24 December. “We know Christmas is a time where lots of households are under pressure to make ends meet,” Mr Buckingham said. Want to contribute? New and unwrapped gifts for any ages are welcome. Non-perishable food needs to have its packaging intact, with best before dates in 2018.

FOCUS ON ... CHRISTMAS IN MONBULK
The one-stop pooch shop Newly-opened Monbulk pet care service Poochies Pet Supplies, Grooming and Training is the one-stop shop for everything a pooch could need this Christmas. Led by locals Wendy Finlay, Tamika Fairgrieve and Melissa Suppa, Poochies provides grooming, dog training, puppy school, a dog cafe, Bowen therapy and non-sedation teeth cleaning, and will continue to grow their services into natural therapies in the New Year. Having all come from dog boarding backgrounds, Wendy, Tamika and Melissa’s love of dogs can be witnessed through their individual
passions. Wendy, a gentle modern method dog trainer, has studied choker chain and clicker training, but favours gentle leader and reward methods and enjoys ‘training’ owners to train their dogs. Tamika, a former tiger handler from Australia Zoo, has moved her love of animals from big cats to big (and small) dogs and can be found serving ‘puppicinos’ or paw blonde doggie beers in the Dog Cafe. And Melissa, a groomer with 23 years’ experience, takes great pride in her grooming and making her clients look “fab and glamorous.”
The Poochies team is currently raising money for the No Hairs Ark Chinese Crested Rescue and All Westie Rescue Australia groups by hosting a Christmas Wishing Tree in store where customers can make a donation, buy dog food, toys or treats that will support these rescue groups. “We just want to help make it a merry Christmas for those little rescue dogs waiting for their forever homes,” Tamika said. “Danielle from the All Westie Rescue Australia has noted that they currently have over $2500 in vet bills and another three knee surgeries needed which is estimated to cost
$4500, so the funds are really needed.” The ladies are also getting into the festive spirit by holding Poochies Christmas photos on Saturday, 9 December for the celebrations of A Very Merry Monbulk, Talent in the Hills, Monbulk produce market and the new Pet talent on the Hills Christmas events supported by the local businesses of Monbulk. Poochies Pet supplies, Grooming and Training is located at 110 Main Road in Monbulk. For more information, phone 9752 0591 or visit poochies-pet-supplies-groom-room. business.site/. 12372891-LB48-17

It’s easy to feel like the end of the year has come around quickly with the recent warm weather. Summer has well and truly come early and Christmas is right around the corner. The holiday season is a great time to unwind, enjoy some quality time with family friends and take stock on the year that has been. It’s important to remember that, for some, Christmas isn’t always a good time of year. It’s a day to spend with family, but there are a lot of people without families. It can also be a trying time for people, financially and emotionally, and putting gifts under the tree just isn’t possible for some. You can embrace the giving spirit of the holidays by donating to local charities that help locals in need. Organisations such as the Dandenong Ranges Emergency Relief Service (DRERS), Healesville Interchurch Community Care Incorporated (HICCI), Holy Fools, and the Salvation Army are just a few of the many groups doing great work with vulnerable residents year-round. These organisations rely on the generous support of the community, both through donations and volunteer hours. I hope you might be able to spare some time, some food or some gifts this holiday season. It is also important to remember that a gift doesn’t have to be expensive or store-bought; taking the time to catch up with old friends and loved ones, writing a heart-felt letter or

Giving unto the others By Wendy Williamson As we count down the days until 25 December, a beautiful big Christmas tree is once again gracing the Belgrave Library. The tree marks the drop-off point for the annual Christmas Appeal run by Dandenong Ranges Emergency Relief Service Inc (DRERS). This is the 17th year of this hugely successful appeal. Over the years thousands of gifts have been donated to children in need in the local community. “The community has supported this appeal for many years, for which we are very grateful, and we hope to have their support once again,” said DRERS manager Tania Bevan. She is inviting people to pop into the library and take a tag off the Christmas tree indicating the age and gender of a child to buy a gift for. The gifts - new and unwrapped, for children up to the age of 17 - can then be dropped off at the library for distribution to families in need of some Christmas cheer. Ms Bevan said she was very appreciative of library management allowing the library to be the drop-off point for the Christmas Appeal. “Library staff are happy to look after any
gifts that people would prefer not to leave under the tree,” she added. Gifts should be left at the library by 17 December, ready for distribution on 18 December. Belgrave Library is open Mondays to Saturdays, from 10am. For further information check the website.

‘Christmas in the Hills’ Appeal Christmas is a wonderful opportunity to re-connect with those close to us, share with our children the magic of Christmas and enjoy the Australian summer. I feel very blessed that I am able to spend this special time with my family and friends. Unfortunately there are too many people within our community who at this time, rather than feeling joy, will experience loneliness, financial hardship and personal difficulties. With this in mind, I wanted to take this opportunity to let you know about Dandenong Ranges Emergency Relief Service which is once again running the “Christmas in the Hills” appeal. Donations of non-perishable food items and gifts can be made at Dandenong Ranges Emergency Relief Service, 1632 Burwood Hwy, Belgrave. Items will need to be delivered by Wednesday 20th December (Monday to Friday 9:00am—12:30pm). For further information please visit www.drers.org.au or phone 9754 7777. FOCUS ON … CHRISTMAS IN TECOMA
Dazzling light
Setting the mood for Christmas fun
By Wendy Williamson
By Peter Douglas If you enjoy nothing more than singing a few ol’ favourite Christmas carols, then Tecoma is the place to be during this festive season. Tecoma Uniting Church will be hosting their highly anticipated carol singing on Christmas Eve, from 5pm to 7pm. Guests can bring along their best singing voice, as well as some family and friends, and enjoy the atmosphere and unity that only carols can deliver. All are welcome. Also, Tecoma Primary School has its annual Christmas concert at the school on Tuesday 5 December. The children have been busy preparing for the event, with their routines and costumes sure to impress all on the big day. Meanwhile, Christmas in the hills is about to hit the right note, with Knox Christmas Carols at nearby Ferntree Gully sure to deliver something special for this year. Audiences will this year hear from one of the very best in the business, with Karen Andrews (aka Miss Murphy, a finalist in hit TV show, The Voice) set to deliver some Christmas cheer. Miss Murphy will headline a huge variety of entertainment for the night on Saturday 2 December, from 4pm to 10pm (main show from 8pm), at the Wally Tew Reserve (Brenock Park Drive, Ferntree Gully). The Voice favourite will impress the crowds
Time to fire up your best singing voice in Tecoma. 175574 with her renowned soulful voice, which will lend itself just perfectly to some favourite carols. Ms Murphy became a household name back in 2013, with her performances inspiring audiences nationally. The wall-to-wall pre-show entertainment will feature Emotion 21, the now famous Beth-
any Fisher kids show ‘Kidding Around’, a massive ‘free’ fairground, arts crafts and activities, a line-up of exclusive local singers and dancers and a new Christmas market. For more information, visit www.knox.vic. gov.au/carols. Download your carols song book or venue map at the website.
Decking their houses with Christmas lights has become an annual activity for many creative homeowners, providing a source of immense pleasure for people driving by. An after-dark cruise of the streets in the weeks leading up to Christmas can be richly rewarded with some amazing sights. Contrasting with the occasional restrained display of twinkling fairy lights are jaw-dropping displays which put the flash into flashy. Laser lights dazzle, Christmas trees sparkle and giant inflatable Santas and sleighs dash across the rooftops or through a winter wonderland on the lawn. You can find Christmas lights all over Australia. Those for whom touring the lights has become a tradition probably know the best ones around, but if you want some inspiration have a look at the website www.christmaslightsearch.com.au. Listed are several homes in the Yarra Ranges area which have been jazzed up with Christmas displays in recent years. Already confirmed for this year is a house in Patrick Street, Millgrove. Then there are others which have not yet confirmed their displays for this year, but could be worth trying: Number 54 Don Road, Healesville, has “between 2000 and 7000 lights, including moving features, nativity scene, inflatables and roof display”. A house in Miriam Drive at Yarra Glen features inflatables and a roof display. Homeowners invite visitors to show their appreciation with a donation to the Royal Children’s Hospital and “those children who are unable to make the drive around to houses with their families”. A box is out the front for generous donations. Mentioned at Woori Yallock are properties in Keelah Street and Glenwright Avenue. Undoubtedly there are more. Most light up from 1 December and run for a month - plenty of time for you to go in search of a dazzling display near you.
From our OBrien Real Estate family to yours, we wish you a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year. We thank you again for your support throughout the year and look forward to a prosperous and exciting 2018. Rebekah and team. Mid Century Modern, Retro and Vintage Designer Furniture

FOCUS ON … CHRISTMAS IN UPWEY
Merry season to be a bit different By Peter Douglas
As the festive season approaches, The Smith Family is calling on Australians to share their Christmas giving to ensure children in struggling families don’t miss out and can look forward to a better New Year. Launching its ‘Share Christmas’ campaign today, the national children’s education charity aims to raise $3.7 million through its annual Christmas Appeal to provide essential learning support programs for nearly 9000 children in need. The Smith Family CEO Dr Lisa O’Brien said: “For children living in poverty, school is just another place they go without. They go without the right uniform and school shoes; they go without the extra learning support they need to keep up in class”. “Some children can get so tired of failing that they simply stop trying. This can set a pattern for their whole life that becomes increasingly hard to break - unless we intervene early and provide long-term support throughout their education journey,” Dr O’Brien said. Carrying on the traditions of its Christmas origins, The Smith Family is also appealing to the generosity of the Australian public to donate new toys and books for 20,000 disadvantaged children who are supported by the charity’s Learning for Life sponsorship program. Support The Smith Family’s “Share Christmas” campaign by: Making a financial donation to help disadvantaged children access vital learning programs Purchasing a toy or book online to donate to a child in need Registering to host a toy and book collection in your community or workplace Volunteering your time, skills and energy to support The Smith Family’s work. Thinking of checking out something a little different to get into the Christmas spirit this year? Upwey has been a hive of activity over the past 12 months, with numerous projects completed, including four new restaurants to the town and three big gardens built. Add to this, a terrific Christmas decoration display is set to bring the main street to life ... and you’re all set for a merry festive season indeed. Much of this work has come through the work of the local Project Upwey and Upwey Township Group, which have worked exceptionally hard in recent times. Project Upwey president Andrew Peterson said there was plenty to see and do over the Christmas period. “We have plenty of street activities planned on Saturday mornings in the lead-up to this Christmas,” Mr Peterson said. “All our retailers and the township groups have worked hard to source some incredible Christmas decorations, which will be put up throughout the main street. “For locals, or those nearby, it’s worth heading out to see all the work that’s been done. They may hardly recognise the place.” “We’ve painted 10 shops and installed three big gardens.”

Draft of dreams By Peter Douglas
Bayley Fritsch celebrates one of his 42 goals during his 2017 season. 172175 Picture: ROB CAREW ing to the AFL, with Fritsch enduring numerous injury setbacks, as well as the death of close friend and Coldstream team-mate in 2014, Josh ‘Turbo’ Matthews. But, Walsh wrote, Fritsch has continued to defy the odds. “The loss was met with heartache and pain for all. However, for Bayley, the pain was even more obvious,” Walsh said. “(But) just under 10 months later, ‘Fritdog’ ran into Walker Reserve in Mitcham with 23 of his mates beside him and his close friend in his heart to compete against the previously unbeaten Ferntree Gully for a premiership medallion. “With so much to play for the result was a given - Coldstream was holding onto their first piece of silverware since 2001.” Interestingly, Eastern Ranges team-mates Joel Garner and Sam Hayes could run out on the field together as early as next season, with Port Adelaide nabbing the talented duo. Both were rumoured to be drafted higher,

Of Garner, he praised the recruit’s kicking skills and leadership abilities. “He’s got outstanding leadership abilities, he’s tough, he’s a good intercept mark and another clean user of the ball, so we’re excited to see him develop in our program,” Parker said.

Yarra Ranges continues to be a draft haven for AFL recruiters, with an incredible four players finding homes at the top level on Friday 24 November. At the AFL draft in Sydney, Bayley Fritsch (Coldstream), Joel Garner (Wandin), Jaidyn Stephenson (Ferntree Gully) and Sam Hayes (Ferntree Gully) all found their way to AFL clubs, fulfilling long-time dreams for the recruits. During their draft year with Under 18s TAC Cup team, Eastern Ranges, Stephenson, Hayes and Garner had all been touted as potential top 20 draftees. Though, Fritsch travelled the more difficult path, impressing recruiters with the Casey VFL side this season, fighting back from injury worries to compile a stunning 2017 season and 42 goals. From those drafted, the super-quick Stephenson was the most highly rated, yet the discovery of a minor heart condition just last week threw his potential drafting into chaos. Thankfully for Stephenson, Collingwood were satisfied with the medical checks on this condition, picking up the excitement machine at pick No. 6. Stephenson told the Magpies he was confident he could perform at the highest level. “The heart issue actually came up when I was 16. They (doctors) knew about it but I’m not really in a diagnosable area for the disease, or whatever it is. So, they said ‘you can play, no worries’,” he said. “My sister also plays a high standard of sport and she was borderline as well. “I’m on some medication, so I’ve just got to make sure I take that but also be careful about what I put in my own body, which could affect the condition. It certainly doesn’t affect my performance in any way.” Meanwhile, Melbourne showed faith in 186cm forward Fritsch, which already enjoyed a close look at his talent through VFL affiliate, Casey Demons. Upon Fritsch’s drafting, Coldstream Football Club president Paul Walsh posted a heartfelt tribute on the club’s Facebook page, outlining Fritsch’s incredible journey. Walsh noted Bayley’s father was a 360-game player with Coldstream, with Bayley starting out playing Auskick with the club. But Walsh said it was far from smooth sail-

Tony Smith attends the opening of the new classrooms at Mount Evelyn Christian College, and unveils the plaques that will be placed on the new classroom walls. there’s something new happening,” Mr Smith said. “The thing I like so much about this school is the vision and the values that created it continue to sustain and build it - congratulations, well done and very very proud to be with you and see all that you achieved.”
As the school has grown, so too has the need for newer, more refined classrooms, and Dr Beimers said these classrooms would be much better prepared to handle the increasing number of students. “The other thing is the growth of the school - we’ve got two Prep classrooms at the moment
with about 37 Preps,” Dr Breimers said. “For 2019, we’ve got 50 kids enrolled, so of course they have to have somewhere to go as they start moving through the school, that’s why the three classrooms have become the four.”

Mount Evelyn Christian College (MECS) unveiled their new flexible learning classrooms on Tuesday 21 November, following years of planning and construction. The new rooms challenge the traditional concept of classrooms, and are built to be more vibrant and promote creative learning— an approach adopted by many schools. Speaking at the unveiling, MECS Administration manager Dr Gerry Beimers said the classrooms “blessed the creativity of the students and teachers”. “Behind me are buildings that have been here since 1972 ... three classrooms have now been transformed into four classrooms, a shed, piazza space, and a radical colour change,” he said. The classrooms included glass walls and doors, various desk heights and cushion for students to sit on as well as wide open rooms for them to learn, all which Dr Beimers said, promoted a more flexible way of learning and catered to the different needs of various students. “Some kids like to stand-up or sit down, so we have regular height tables, low height tables; there is a large stack of button cushions so they can sit on those, too.” “Some kids do better sitting, some standing ... it’s getting a lot more flexible than just desks.” The $1.7 million construction was helped along by the Federal Government which funded $770,000 — the rest was made up by the school. Federal Liberal Member for Casey Tony Smith commended the school on raising much of the money, and said he was thrilled to see the impressive new classrooms. “It’s great to be here on this very special day in your history ... every time I come here

It’s all for our firies
Leave it alone
The state te of
affairs Brad Battin MP Member for Gembrook The fire services are an absolutely essential part of the community fabric throughout the Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Valley. While those on the frontline continue to turn out day-in, day-out to protect their communities, the management of our fire services is in a state of crisis. A Liberal Nationals Government, if elected in 2018, will conduct a Royal Commission into Victoria’s fire services. It’s time to take a stand and fix the cultural and operational problems that have become so evident. Over the past few years, we have seen the CFA Board dismissed and the MFB Board replaced, losing more than 100 years of combined experience in emergency services. We have seen a Minister resign from Cabinet, the resignation of the CFA chief executive Lucinda Nolan, a bitter and prolonged EBA dispute and serious allegations of bullying, intimidation, sexual harassment, and discrimination. The Premier has been indebted to the pow-
erful United Firefighters Union, which lobbied strongly for his government’s election in 2014. The union has since demanded that the CFA and its 60,000 volunteers and members be brought under its control. Just last month, the Andrews Labor Government scrapped funding for Fire Wise, a print and online magazine with a 50-year history of communicating with and connecting volunteers across the state. Its removal is a further step towards the silencing of volunteers. We cannot turn a blind eye to these serious allegations. There have been numerous inquiries and reports and in the past two decades, we have had three governments, six premiers, nine ministers and still nothing has worked - it is time to have a Royal Commission. Only a Royal Commission will remove the politics and provide considered, impartial and objective recommendations to fix our fire services. The outcome of this Royal Commission will be safer communities for all Victorians and a safer workplace for our tens of thousands of career and volunteer firefighters. We will protect those who protect us. We need our fire services to work well to ensure that people’s lives, homes and communities are safe for years to come.
On Saturday 18 November, I attended James Merlino’s unveiling of the 34ha Olinda Golf Course ‘secret’ precinct plan. I was angry! I believed at last James would display the plan on the Parks Victoria website and name the stakeholders. But, no; before me was a childlike colouring-in of abstract blobs of colour, devoid of development information. Quoting from an article in The Age (19 November), James Merlino and Lily Ambrosio “want to create a beautiful place, a heart of the community, bask in natural environment”. It already ‘is’ and we ‘already do’. You were beaten by the master creator 350 million years ago; what you call ‘vacant’ is full of beauty, flora, fauna and what money can’t buy ... solitude.

New home for good sports By Peter Douglas South Belgrave football and cricket clubs celebrated the highly anticipated opening of their new pavilion and clubrooms on Tuesday 21 November. The new facilities include a multi-purpose room, meeting room, kitchen, change rooms, toilets and umpiring facilities. In an indication of the level of joint commitment, representatives from all levels of government, in addition to numerous club and community representatives, turned out to mark the occasion. Football club member and project co-ordinator Ian Bakens was on hand to welcome the long list of dignitaries, thanking them for their contribution. “These kinds of projects can’t be done just on our own, we do need the help of everybody,” Mr Bakens said. “It’s that sort of project where everybody has got to dip in their hand and make it known we want to make it happen. “You’ve all been the club’s best recruits over the journey, though we probably wouldn’t want you out there playing games of football.” To get the multi-million project off the ground has required contributions from the Federal Government ($250,000), Victorian Government ($1 million), Yarra Ranges Council ($950,000) and the Bendigo Bank ($100,000). Also, eight member groups - representing more than 1000 locals across sporting clubs, the Belgrave South Primary School and community house facilities - combined to raise $150,000 towards the construction of the pavilion. Among the guest speakers at the opening were Monbulk MP James Merlino, Federal La Trobe MP Jason Wood and recently appointed mayor of Yarra Ranges, Len Cox. Mr Merlino also acknowledged the team-
Jason Wood, far left, and James Merlino and Cr Len Cox, centre, with supporters of the project. 175427 work required. “To come here today is just magnificent. It must be a wonderful feeling for all involved to be here finally celebrating the opening of this wonderful facility,” Mr Merlino said. “Having been involved in a number of these projects, I know what a difference this makes to the community. “There’s been a lot of blood, sweat and tears, but what look what it has delivered. This will leave a great legacy for the community.” Mr Wood praised those involved for “keeping the faith when you have those knockbacks” and seeing the project through. Cr Cox spoke on behalf of ward councillor Mike Clarke, who was an apology.
“It takes a lot of work from so many people to do these sorts of things. If it wasn’t for volunteers, life in the Yarra Ranges wouldn’t be as good,” Cr Cox said. Also in attendance were representatives from the Bendigo Bank, as well as the Eastern Football League and the Ferntree Gully District Association. Australian Test cricketer and home-town hero Glenn Maxwell also slipped in to make an appearance. Meanwhile, Sport and Recreation Victoria’s investment is also funding the development of a playground at the reserve, which is anticipated to be completed by mid-2018.

Easy planning goes online The ‘friendly’ loan scheme By Peter Douglas After eight years of providing invaluable community assistance, the Cockatoo and Hills ‘No Interest Loan Scheme’ (NILS) recently celebrated its 1000th loan. At the Ash Wednesday Bushfire Education Centre in Cockatoo, staff, volunteers and supporters gathered on Wednesday 15 November to mark the milestone. From small beginnings in 2009, when five loans were approved in the first year, the program has grown considerably stronger. NILS now works with 10 client support programs throughout the southern metropolitan region and approves close to 50 loans per month. Manager Sue Barbieri said the program filled a great need in the community. “Our program gives many clients the opportunity to feel a great sense of pride and satisfaction, knowing that their loan has been
repaid in 12 months and they now fully own goods such as refrigerator or washing machine, or they have been able to cover the cost of undertaking a training course that has led to employment,” she said. “One family recently made contact when they needed to get the family car on the road. They had two rental contracts out on furniture they were purchasing and it was borderline whether they would qualify for a NILS loan. “The assessment committee decided to approve his loan and his car was repaired and registered. “The loan was paid off without one missing payment and the family was proud to have accomplished this.” To celebrate the 1000th loan, Ms Barbieri and Cardinia Shire councillor Leticia Wilmot cut a specially decorated cake. *If you are on a low income and need a loan of up to $1500 to cover expenses, contact Ms Barbieri on 0427 895 596.

on planning applications. Lodge will enable the community to lodge applications electronically, using online payments and a customised checklist showing all the information they need to provide for applications, and will be launched early next year. Yarra Ranges Council Director of Social and Economic Development, Ali Wastie, said the update to ePlanning services would make the planning process easier. “When planning out a project, it can be hard to navigate the zones and overlays to know whether you’ll need a planning permit for your property,” Ms Wastie said. “Enquire will remove the guesswork and provide advice 24 hours a day, reducing the time it takes to put an application together.” Residents can access ePlanning at yarraranges.vic.gov.au/track or yarraranges.vic.gov. au/enquire and customers without computer access can use computer terminals at all of Yarra Ranges Council’s Community Links.

Yarra Ranges residents are now able to easily find out if they need a planning permit for potential developments on their property. An expansion of council’s online service, ePlanning Enquire allows residents to enter their address and their proposed development to receive advice on whether a permit may be required. Details on what developments can and cannot go ahead can also be sourced. Enquire will provide advice on which zones and overlays are applicable to properties and the reasons why the need for a permit may be triggered. The service can also provide a list of what documents and information you may need to provide when submitting your application. Yarra Ranges will be the first Victorian council to offer all three ePlanning modules Track, Enquire and Lodge. Track, which was launched earlier this year, allows residents to view, track and comment

FAMILY VIOLENCE HAS NO GOOD DAYS. Family Violence stems from men who think they are better than women. Men who exercise control, and misuse power. And they might think it’s only their wife or partner they’re harming, and that their children are fine. But they’re not. In fact the violence their children are witnessing or hearing is just as damaging to them, their futures and their future relationships. Turn back the clock North Melbourne champion Michael ‘Spud’ Firrito is set to turn back the clock, signing on with AFL Yarra Ranges team, Gembrook, for season 2018. In a major coup for the ‘Brookers’, the dour defender will return to his home club and add to his tally of senior games for the club. Firrito made his senior debut in the premiership-winning 2000 season. It was the only time he would run out alongside his older brother, Carl (a former skipper at the Brookers) in the same team. Battle bubble One of Australia’s most important military campaigns has been marked with the completion of drinking fountain upgrades at the 1000 Steps Kokoda Track Memorial Walk. La Trobe MP Jason Wood, along with Liberal candidate for Monbulk John Schurink, were on hand to officially unveil the project, which delivers 12 drinking fountains and eight refill stations along one of the Dandenong Ranges’ most popular tourist spots. The $50,000 project, which was made possible through federal funding, aims to support the around 800,000 visitors who enjoy the 1000 Steps annually. Mr Wood said the project fulfilled an election commitment and was a coup for regulars and visitors alike. “The fountains are already in constant use, demonstrating the value of the project to the community,” he said. “They will also reduce litter associated with empty water bottles being dumped along the track, as well as providing easy access for visitors who need to remain hydrated while walking the track.” Local resident John Schurink praised the project. “This is a great initiative, which is not only good for the park and the environment, but also an important support for visitors in the coming months,” he said.

NEWS
Gender eye Yarra Ranges Council staff have shared their experience with gender equity and stereotypes as part of the 16 Days of Activism campaign to prevent men’s violence against women. 16 Days of Activism is a campaign that runs from International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (25 November) to Human Rights Day (10 December), encouraging action to end violence against women. Yarra Ranges Council CEO, Glenn Patterson, said council would hold sessions with staff to empower them to continue championing the message of gender equality. “We know that violence against women is wrong, but many people may not know about gender inequality and the ways it lays the foundations for that violence,” Mr Patterson said. “Having gender equity and equal treatment between men and women will reduce the underlying causes of violence against women, which includes disrespect and stereotypes that portray women as less capable. “It is our responsibility at council to role model positive behaviours and challenge gender stereotypes, to highlight the root causes that lead to violence.” School focused youth service co-ordinator, Anita Holman, said that for her gender equity meant learning how to be treated as equals, regardless of gender. “It means that I will challenge assumptions,” she said. “I try to push back when men do not take me seriously and I also try not to be derogatory toward men; I think we have great things to learn from each other. “I deserve to enjoy the same opportunities that are enjoyed by a man.” Indigenous Development Officer, Garry Detez, said his views on equity were formed growing up in an Aboriginal family and community.

Branching out into bundles “Gender equity to me means equal opportunity and equality of responsibility,” he said. “It also means the joy of regarding the opposite gender as of equal intellect and valuing their judgements, values and views as no less valuable than that of any male. “I seek to live in a society where everyone is valued and respected.” Council’s organisational development support officer, Dale McConchie, said challenging gender inequality in the community could be as simple as not putting up with sexist or demeaning jokes, language and behaviours and calling out inappropriate behaviour. On Tuesday, 21 November, council hosted family violence support service EDVOS CEO, Jenny Jackson, for a keynote speech at Box Hill Institute’s Lilydale Lakeside Campus. For more information, or for support, visit edvos.org.au or call 9259 4200.
Yarra Ranges residents will be able to get fire ready and save on dropping off green waste, with council’s bi-annual bundled branch collection starting on Monday 27 November. Council will be collecting up to three cubic metres of bundled branches from properties over the coming three weeks, with the first week’s collection starting in the Yarra Valley, followed by council’s urban area and then the Dandenong Ranges. Yarra Ranges Mayor, Len Cox, said that, while clearing properties could be hard work, it could make the difference during the upcoming fire season. “Small branches, along with bark and twigs, make up fine fuels which can burn quickly in a bushfire,” Cr Cox said. “By taking time to clear up now, residents can make their properties safer in the event of an emergency and get rid of branches around their property for free.
“Residents will have a second opportunity to get rid of bundled branches with a second collection taking place alongside our annual hard waste collection early in 2018.” Up to 20 bundles of branches may be placed by the roadside, at a maximum length of 1.5m long and 20cm in diameter. Cr Cox said that residents could add $79 or $85 to their annual rates to receive a 120-litre or 240-litre green waste bin to dispose of soft green waste, such as plants and weeds, which is collected every fortnight in eligible areas. Council fire prevention officers will be inspecting properties across the municipality over coming months as part of Council’s Fire Hazard Inspection Program. For more information about what can and cannot be collected, visit www.yarraranges.vic. gov.au/bundledbranches. To find out your collection date, visit www. yarraranges.vic.gov.au/myneighbourhood.

Bakery taste The Cuckoo Restaurant is today a renowned smorgasbord restaurant receiving visitors from all over the globe.
Cuckoo’s fine fare A hills curiosity with a rich history, The Cuckoo is a traditional Bavarian restaurant. It was pioneered by Willi and Karin Koeppen. As The Cuckoo history goes, the once-modest refreshment stop was named after Karin heard the sound of a cuckoo calling during the night. Nowadays, The Cuckoo seats 450 people in three separate dining rooms and is renowned for its smorgasbords. And as assistant manager Simone Gordon explained, with a warm, ambient atmosphere, The Cuckoo advocates family togetherness
and does its best to provide an experience where people forget their troubles and have fun. “We are a strong, generational restaurant that is tried and tested over many years,” Simone said. “We have the winning combination of family, fun and audience participation, which creates the magic that attracts people again and again.” Drawing visitors from all over the globe, The Cuckoo combines excellent service and an all-you-can-eat policy for all food buffets, with traditional Bavarian entertainment.
“We offer value for money where you can eat as much as you want while enjoying the music and floor show,” Simone said. “But our focus is to combine being a part of people’s happy memories ... we want to create experiences where customers feel compelled to come back and experience the magic.” The Cuckoo Restaurant is located at 508 Mount Dandenong Tourist Road in Olinda. The local icon is a great place to consider over the Christmas period, too. For more information, phone (03) 9751 1003 or visit www.cuckoorestaurant.com.au.
Whether you’re a local or just passing through Healesville, you’ll never be disappointed with a visit to the Beechworth Bakery this festive season. The bakery has a long and proud history of serving high quality baked goods, as well as supporting the local community. Originally established in Beechworth, the Healesville bakery is one of six that are located in Victorian towns. Now a Healesville icon, the bakery combines old-fashioned service with modern facilities. Manager Kylie Bray says that customers are drawn to the personal touch provided by the employees. “We offer great customer service and enthusiastic and friendly staff to cater for our customers’ needs,” she said. Open seven days a week, from 6am to 6pm, the bakery is in the perfect location on the Maroondah Highway in Healesville. It caters for groups of all sizes and offers a huge car park, capable of holding anything from motorbikes to caravans.

The pair has also seen a return in customers making sure their gutters are cleaned well in time for fire season. “It is vital that people don’t leave it till it’s too late and we understand that a lot of people are hesitant to get up on the roof to clean their gutters out,” Beth said. “We are more than happy to take the pressure off and get it done for them.” The Henkes are all about achieving what the customer wants and state they are willing to go that extra mile to make sure customers are satisfied. “We value our customers and the opportunity they give us to help make their house a home,” Richard said. “We have a long list of repeat customers who have become like extended family and

ENTERTAINMENT
Musician on a high By Peter Douglas Maggie Alley is a young musician on a mission. The Monbulk College Year 9 student, who has the singing voice of an angel, is determined to tour Bolivia next year with World Challenge, an organisation that sends dedicated students over to developing countries for four weeks of volunteer work in communities. Previously, Monbulk College has helped facilitate trips to Nepal and Mongolia, and in 2018 is planning a South American sojourn, where Maggie hopes to sing for the people of Bolivia once she hits their shores. To raise funds for her goal, Alley has been playing a series of house concerts around the Dandenong Ranges and surrounding areas. Maggie has also headlined Melbourne venue Bella Union with her band, The Rosebloods. The committed student says she’s focused on performing her way to Bolivia, with her target of $9000. “I need to raise another $4000 by March to get myself to Bolivia with World Challenge. I’ve raised most of my target through busking and gigs so far,” she said. “House concerts are great, lots of people are forming online groups to host them - like House Concerts Australia on Facebook - and I can play afternoons and early evenings, then get my dad to drive me home ... he’s my roadie!” The young artist plays 45-minute house parties with voice and guitar for $100, with all funds going to her World Challenge campaign. Concerts can be booked at boliviahouseconcerts@gmail.com. To visit Maggie’s fundraising page, visit www.gofundme.com/buskingtobolivia.
Vanishing a class act The Vanishing (M) Starring Gene Bervoets, Johanna ter Steege and Bernard-Pierre Donnadieu The Vanishing is a riveting Franco-Dutch thriller from 1988, and was screened at the Healesville Memorial Hall by the Yarra Ranges Film Society on 21 November. The film initially follows a close Dutch couple, Leo (Gene Bervoets) and Saskia (Johanna ter Steege), on holiday in France, only for Saskia to disappear. The opening act establishes how devastating Saskia’s disappearance is for Leo, but the film soon switches perspectives, and the viewer becomes deeply invested in the life of Saskia’s abductor, who is quickly identified to us as Raymond (Bernard-Pierre Donnadieu), a French chemistry professor and sociopath. In following Raymond’s often grimly funny experiences, we find ourselves almost liking him. He is considerate and good-humoured, and devoted to his wife and children. He lives by a perverse yet elegant moral philosophy, and his earnest, bumbling enthusiasm as he rehearses his kidnappings is strangely endearing, just as it is profoundly unsettling. In the entrancing slow-burn of the narrative, the heavy tension isn’t just derived from Leo’s burning obsession to learn what happened to Saskia. The suspense of The Vanishing is amplified from within ourselves - in Raymond, we are confronted with a reasonable monster. We are simultaneously intrigued and repelled by him, and disturbed by our own reactions to him. The YRFS screens an acclaimed classic or foreign film every month at the Warburton and Healesville cinemas. - Seth Hynes

Centuries to pair of bats FTGDCA Knoxfield put together a sizable target in their encounter against Belgrave. The Magpies made early breakthroughs to remove the openers to have the Knights at 2/14; however, Trent Scholfield (129) and Tom Boxell (135) combined with centuries each to set a tough task at Carrington Reserve for the visitors. Luke Manion chimed in with 3/87 with the pill for the Magpies. Johnson Park clicked into top gear against Mountain Gate, with Julian Whetstone producing a classy century. Whetstone led the scoring against the Gators with 113, Andrew Devenish adding 83 also as the Sharks set 296. For the Gators, Luke Turner provided return
with the ball with 5/68. Matt Mulcahy led the way for the Tigers as Upwey scored 256 against Knox Gardens. Mulcahy notched up another century with a superb 120, Lachlan Jansen providing support with 37. For the Falcons, Matt Young claimed 4/41 to help limit the Tigers. The Basin posted 9/232 in their match against Eildon Park in a team-effort batting display. Jake Sherriff led the way with the willow, highest scoring with 46 with assistance alongside Blake Walter (35) and Jayden Turcinovic (34). For the Panthers, Nathan Caton-Robertson (3/33) and Monto Perera (3/30) were amongst the wickets.
Ferntree Gully batted all day in their derby encounter with Upper Ferntree Gully. Jayden Bradbury posted 82 as the Blues set the Kings 206 next week. For the Kings, Todd Burley (4/50) and Jarryd Roleff (4/26) ensured to keep the batsmen working hard to remain at the crease. In Decoite Shield, Monbulk set Ferntree Gully Footballers 9/250 in their crunch match. Jason Fraser continued his form streak with 84, Tom Watson chipping in with 60 also. For the Griffins, Nick Bogar (3/59) and Tharanga Lakshita (3/63) provided return for their efforts in the middle to limit the Hawks. South Belgrave had their innings cut short, however, are still well placed in their encounter with Rowville, with 4/216 on the board from 59 overs.
Jordan McDermott posted a century, while Darren Ray tallied 70 - an innings in which Ray passed 10,000 career runs with South. Louis Holmes toiled hard to return 3/50. Knoxfield made first use of the facilities in their match against Olinda. Jayden Scanlan (71) and Adam Maloney (42 not out) led the way as the Knights continue their innings, currently 4/172 from 59 overs. St Johns Tecoma closed out the day’s play in 68 overs with 9/161 on the board against Lysterfield. Special thanks to Monbulk Bendigo Bank, MADCOW, MRE and Monbulk Rotary for their ongoing support. Thanks also to the Monbulk Produce Market and the Belgrave Big Dreams Market for their stalls and adding to a great morning. MOUNT EVELYN CRICKET In the top division of YVCA, Mount Evelyn leaders Kane Jones (3/46) and Gareth Fraser (3/28) did just that, led a solid all-round fielding display from the Mounters. The visitors left with a chase of 154 off 55 overs. The chase was always on track with Daniel Giblin controlling the contest with a free-flowing innings of 61. Three consecutive sixes from the bowling of Mark Sandfort had the Mounters racing to victory. With Smith removing Giblin, the third wicket of the innings, as he had total control of the game, the innings slowed against some excellent bowling from Seville captain Matt Hadlum (3/51). Add to that a rain delay, and things tightened. Unperturbed, Kane Jones (44 not out) and Troy Hancock (20 not out) continued their measured approach to the innings until the end was in sight. With a flurry of boundaries, the target was reached with six wickets in hand. DJ Strachan Shield and RA Finger Trophy Seville 153 (L. Aitkins 52, L. McGookin 43, M. Smith 20, G. Fraser 3/28, K. The littlies enjoyed a fun night of Twilight athletics on Friday night. After a fantastic warm-up led by Brayden, Noah and Tayleb a club versus club shuttle relay was held. Athletes then competed at a range of events with their fellow clubmates, which was thoroughly enjoyed by athletes and parents - until the storm came. The next round of Little Athletic athletics is the Multi Event round. Be there early for set-up and extra events. Bring a friend if you want!

Summer fun MONBULK RANGERS SOCCER The inaugural 5-a-side summer competition at Monbulk Rangers Soccer Club has been fiercely competitive, with more than 100 junior players relishing the chance to play outside the traditional winter season. The small sided games are played on the two sub junior pitches at the club’s brand new $10-million dollar complex in Old Emerald Road. Junior coordinator Ewa Wallis says the competition has been a great success. Eighteen teams from Under 10 to Under 15 play against each other in two separate age groups for 10 weeks, culminating in finals to be held on Thursday 14 December. Ms Wallis says the club is also having its first registration day for players to sign up for the 2018 winter season on 14 December, so they’ll be able to see some great soccer. “Everyone who comes to register for next year’s season will be able to watch the finals between the top teams in Group 1 and the top teams in Group 2, and we’ll also have a fully operating canteen and the uniform shop open on the day,” she said.
