FOCUS ON … CHRISTMAS IN HEALESVILLE

There'll be music aplenty By Wendy Williamson Coming together to sing Christmas carols is for many people one of the joys of the festive season. There will be plenty of opportunity to do this in the next few weeks as local churches and businesses partner to organise community carols. The annual Healesville Community Carols will take place in Queens Park on Saturday 16 December. Major sponsors are Liberty Family Church and YV Financial Services. This is a free event for all ages, with food, coffee, face painting and lots of music. Comedian Mark Trenwith will be MC. The headline act will be Melbourne-based a capella quartet ‘On Church Street.’ This fabulous foursome has an extensive repertoire of everything from gospel to jazz, but on this night all their music will have a distinctly Christmas flavour. Other musical acts will include Tin Man, Old Smokey and the Raven, and Roy Best. Badger Creek Children’s Choir will provide preshow entertainment. Feel free to join in the singing or just lie back on your picnic rug and listen. The night will begin at 6.30pm, but it may be a good idea to get there soon after 5.30pm to select the best grassy position you can. If 16 December is too long to wait to exercise your vocal cords, you may be interested in attending the LMC Christmas Carols on 10 December. Life Ministry Church at 15-49 Old Melbourne Road, Chirnside Park, will be the venue for these carols, which will begin at 7.15pm.

From left, Mel Searle, Jonny Newton-Howes, Andrew Bird and Amy Horneman of a capella group 'On Church Street' will be the headline act at the Healesville Community Carols on 16 December. 175549 Entry is free, and the evening will include a spectacular light show, sausage sizzle and activities for children.

On Sunday 17 December Lilydale Baptist Church will host Carols on the Lawn from 5.30pm. This inter-church event will include

a free sausage sizzle, jumping castle, face painting and, of course, plenty of Christmas carols.

FOCUS ON … CHRISTMAS IN HEALESVILLE

Santa soon By Wendy Williamson The busiest night of the year is fast approaching for Santa Claus and his little helpers. The jolly man in red will soon be gearing up his sleigh and coming to town, but not before he has replied to thousands of Santa Mail letters from children across Australia. Australia Post is urging children to post their letters early to ensure Santa has plenty of time to reply. “Christmas is a very special time of year at Australia Post, and it’s also our busiest as we send thousands of letters to the North Pole,” said Australia Post Head of Media Michelle Skehan. Ms Skehan recommends writing a letter to Santa as an easy way for children to practise their letter writing skills and how to address, stamp and post a letter. “If you get stuck, Australia Post has some helpful letter writing tips and templates on our website,” she said. To ensure Santa and his helpers receive your letter, send your letters and wish lists to Santa, North Pole, 9999, with a 65-cent Christmas stamp on the front of the envelope. Don’t forget to write your name and return address on the back of the envelope so Santa knows where to send his reply. Letters received nice and early with names and return addresses clearly marked on the back will receive a postcard reply from Santa. Santa Mail letters can be placed in either a dedicated Santa Mail box found at most post

The Staff at Mark Gunther First National would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Safe and Prosperous 2018 Writing a letter to Santa may be a great way to get on the 'nice' list. offices or any red street postbox. Children can pick up free Christmas postcards and write to Santa on the spot at selected post offices. This year, for the first time, children can track the progress of their letters online via the Australia Post interactive Santa Mail tracker at auspost.com.au/santa-mail.

FOCUS ON … CHRISTMAS IN WOORI YALLOCK

Put a smile on their faces By Wendy Williamson Christmas is a time for loving and giving. The Woori Yallock Primary School community takes this message to heart with an annual collection of gifts and food items for distribution to local families going through hard times. “Our school community continues to amaze me with offers of generosity and thoughts for our families who may have a challenging Christmas season,” said the school’s primary welfare officer, Andre Campbell. The annual Christmas Gift Drive is co-ordinated by the welfare team at Woori Yallock Primary. The school is going one step further this year. In addition to the Christmas Gift Drive, it is participating for the first time in the Christmas Wish Tree campaign run by Eastern Domestic Violence Service (EDVOS). In the office area of the school is a beautiful little Christmas tree. Parents and friends are invited to take a gift tag from the tree and some time before the school year finishes on 20 December purchase a gift for a child of the age and gender specified by the tag. EDVOS will then distribute the gifts left under the tree. EDVOS is the specialist family violence service in Melbourne’s eastern metropolitan region. It focuses on supporting the safety of women and children and the accountability of perpetrators. By providing gifts during Christmas time, EDVOS aims to reduce stress, promote positive experiences and bring happiness to children’s lives. Relying exclusively on donations, last year EDVOS provided gifts to over 200 children. “This is one way in which we can support families during what can be a very stressful time,” Andre Campbell said. “The receipt of a gift lets the recipients know that they are not alone, but part of a caring community.”

FOCUS ON … CHRISTMAS IN WANDIN

How lovely are thy limbs By Derek Schlennstedt When I was younger, the third most exciting day of the year was the point in mid-December when my parents would finally relent and we would go find the perfect Christmas tree. It was only from that point onwards when the smell of pine needles would fill the house that you could really get excited for Christmas - for what is more synonymous with Christmas than an intricate ornamentally decorated Christmas tree. Though there are those who may choose the plastic fantastic, neon coloured, put-in-abox type Christmas tree, nothing can compare with the traditional pine tree, and in the Yarra Valley that tradition continues to be celebrated. In the lead-up to Christmas, you can find hundreds of Christmas trees lining the outsides of community groups and CFA stations. But as Warren Smith, owner of Yarra Valley Christmas Tree farm said, there was still something very special about walking through rows upon rows of pine trees in search of that perfect tree. And with 15 acres of Christmas trees to choose from, Yarra Valley Christmas Tree Farm on Clegg Road in Wandin certainly offers trees of all sizes and shapes, all at a flat rate of $60. “Christmas trees have got that lovely smell to them which reminds people of Christmas -it’s the smell of Christmas,” Mr Smith said. “You can come and choose it and we’ll cut it down for you.” Of course as with any living plant, they require maintenance and to ensure yours didn't wilt or go brown before the special day, Mr Smith said it was vital they got a lot of water. “Make sure you keep it out of direct sunlight and keep it watered,” he said.

Though there are those who may choose the plastic fantastic, neon coloured, put-in-a-box type Christmas tree, nothing can compare with the traditional pine tree, and in the Yarra Valley that tradition continues to be celebrated. “It’s got to have plenty of water - they can drink litres of water when first cut, and if they run out of water the bottom seals up and they

can't take water, which means it will dry out and you need to cut it off again.” In the lead-up to Christmas, Mr Smith said

By Wendy Williamson Christmas is still a few weeks away, but excitement is already mounting among the residents of Estia Health Yarra Valley. The residents of the aged care facility at Yarra Junction were recently treated to horse and carriage rides around the town. The rides, which were enjoyed as much as if they were taken in Santa’s sleigh, were followed by a scrumptious Devonshire tea for everyone. “It was all part of ‘creating happiness’ which we ensure we do each month,” explained the facility’s lifestyle co-ordinator, Bronwyn Walburg. As the countdown to Christmas continues, there will be plenty more festive fun for the residents in the weeks to come. Each Thursday morning, there’s a sing-along at Estia. All through December the singa-longs will continue and they’ll have a Christmas theme. A couple of locals who love singing are already regular participants, and any other community members are welcome to come along

and join in. Scheduled for 4 December is a visit from the Cire kinder kids. They will bring lots of Christmas cheer and no doubt light up the faces of their audience as they sing an assortment of Christmas carols. There will be more young visitors on 8 December, when it will be the turn of the children of St Joseph’s Primary to entertain the residents of Estia. Christmas decorations, which the residents have been helping create in recent weeks, will go up shortly, adding to the festive atmosphere. No fewer than four Christmas trees are promised. “We’re going all out this year!” Ms Walburg quipped. The celebrations at the facility will culminate on Thursday 21 December. Residents, along with their families and staff, will sit down to a slap-up Christmas barbecue lunch.

FOCUS ON ... CHRISTMAS IN SEVILLE

Dazzling displays worth it By Wendy Williamson Decking their houses with Christmas lights has become an annual activity for many creative homeowners, providing a source of immense pleasure for people driving by. An after-dark cruise of the streets in the weeks leading up to Christmas can be richly rewarded with some amazing sights. Contrasting with the occasional restrained display of twinkling fairy lights are jaw-dropping displays which put the flash into flashy. Laser lights dazzle, Christmas trees sparkle

and giant inflatable Santas and sleighs dash across the rooftops or through a winter wonderland on the lawn. You can find Christmas lights all over Australia. Those for whom touring the lights has become a tradition probably know the best ones around, but if you want some inspiration have a look at the website www.christmaslightsearch.com.au. Listed are several homes in the Yarra Ranges area which have been jazzed up with Christmas displays in recent years.

Already confirmed for this year is a house in Patrick Street, Millgrove. Then there are others which have not yet confirmed their displays for this year, but could be worth trying: Number 54 Don Road, Healesville, has “between 2000 and 7000 lights, including moving features, nativity scene, inflatables and roof display”. A house in Miriam Drive at Yarra Glen features inflatables and a roof display. Homeowners invite visitors to show their appreciation with a donation to the Royal Children’s Hospi-

tal and “those children who are unable to make the drive around to houses with their families”. A box is out the front for generous donations. Mentioned at Woori Yallock are properties in Keelah Street and Glenwright Avenue. Undoubtedly there are more. Most light up from 1 December and run for a month - plenty of time for you to go in search of a dazzling display near you.

Festive spirit By Derek Schlennstedt There’s no better way to get into the festive season than a night of carols at the Water Play Park in Seville. Christmas isn’t complete without traditional carols, and this year the annual Seville Carols at the Water Play Park will see the community come together at the Seville Village Green to celebrate Christmas and all the songs that accompany it. Santa will make an appearance being chauffeured to the event, not by his reindeer but rather by a red fire truck. Activities start at 6.30pm - just be sure to bring a rug and your best singing voice for a great night organised by Seville CFA and Seville- Wandin churches. The carols will take place on Sunday 10 December from 6.30pm at the Seville Recreation Reserve - next to the Seville Water Park.

Santa will be dropping in to the carols to check that everyone is on the nice list.

However, for Bayley, the pain was even more obvious,” Walsh said. “(But) just under 10 months later, ‘Fritdog’ ran into Walker Reserve in Mitcham with 23 of his mates beside him and his close friend in his heart to compete against the previously unbeaten Ferntree Gully for a premiership medallion. “With so much to play for the result was a given - Coldstream was holding onto their first piece of silverware since 2001.” Interestingly, Eastern Ranges team-mates Joel Garner and Sam Hayes could run out on the field together as early as next season, with Port Adelaide nabbing the talented duo. Yarra Ranges continues to be a draft haven for AFL recruiters, with an incredible four players finding homes at the top level on Friday 24 November. At the AFL draft in Sydney, Bayley Fritsch (Coldstream), Joel Garner (Wandin), Jaidyn Stephenson (Ferntree Gully) and Sam Hayes (Ferntree Gully) all found their way to AFL clubs, fulfilling long-time dreams for the recruits. During their draft year with Under 18s TAC Cup team, Eastern Ranges, Stephenson, Hayes and Garner had all been touted as potential top 20 draftees. Though, Fritsch travelled the more difficult path, impressing recruiters with the Casey VFL side this season, fighting back from injury worries to compile a stunning 2017 season and 42 goals. From those drafted, the super-quick Stephenson was the most highly rated, yet the discovery of a minor heart condition just last week threw his potential drafting into chaos. Thankfully for Stephenson, Collingwood were satisfied with the medical checks on this condition, picking up the excitement machine at pick No. 6. Stephenson told the Magpies he was confident he could perform at the highest level. “The heart issue actually came up when I was 16. They (doctors) knew about it but I’m not really in a diagnosable area for the disease, or whatever it is. So, they said ‘you can play, no worries’,” he said. “My sister also plays a high standard of sport and she was borderline as well. “I’m on some medication, so I’ve just got to make sure I take that but also be careful about what I put in my own body, which could affect the condition. It certainly doesn’t affect my performance in any way.” Meanwhile, Melbourne showed faith in 186cm forward Fritsch, which already enjoyed a close look at his talent through VFL affiliate, Casey Demons. Upon Fritsch’s drafting, Coldstream Football Club president Paul Walsh posted a heartfelt tribute on the club’s Facebook page, outlining Fritsch’s incredible journey. Walsh noted Bayley’s father was a 360-game player with Coldstream, with Bayley starting out playing Auskick with the club. But Walsh said it was far from smooth sail-

IN BRIEF

Get cider inside ya By Derek Schlennstedt Since its inception, St Ronans Cider has continued to grow in popularity across Australia and after winning awards at the Cider Australia National Awards on October 27 is undeniably qualified to take its place among the best ciders produced in the world. From small beginnings in the Yarra Valley, St Ronans burst onto the scene with a gold medal for their Methode Traditionelle Pear Cider in both the 2012 and 2013 Australian Cider Awards. In addition to these awards, winning the People’s Choice award in 2012 for the Methode Traditionelle Pear Cider cemented St Ronans place in the league of serious producers. This year against what has been considered one of the strongest line-ups ever, St Ronans has continued their winning streak, being awarded the Best Traditional Cider and winning the the big one - the Best Australian Cider or Perry. Chief Steward of the Cider Australia Awards, Nyall Condon, commented on the close competition and said it was amazing to see how far the awards had come in just a few years with a record 250 local and international entries (25 per cent more than last year) and a big step up in the number and grade of medals being awarded. The St Ronans flagship cider, the Methode Traditionelle Heritage was the big winner on the night taking out both awards. Troy Jones co-owner and cider maker at St Ronans said that the whole team was stoked with the result. “Really stoked, when we first released our Methode Traditionelle pear we got the same sort of accolade at the very beginning with our pear, he said. “It’s nice to follow this up now with some fruit from our orchard and some heritage cider

Racecourse burglary Police are investigating the theft of 75 Jim Beam slabs that each had 30 cans inside as well as the theft of 100 picnic packs from the Yarra Glen racecourse. Police allege that offenders have broken into an area of the racecourse, and used a black trolley to transport the alcohol. The theft occurred between Thursday 16 and Monday 20 November, and the stolen items have been valued at 10,000.

Yarra Glen fire On 23 November, in Yarra Glen a fire started and burnt an area of two acres. It is alleged that an occupier of a property on the Melba Highway in Yarra Glen was burning rubbish, when a gust of wind blew embers from the fire onto grass and consequently caused a grass fire that resulted in two acres of the farm property being burnt. Eight CFA appliances were called to the incident including trucks from Yarra Glen, Dixons Creek, Healesville and Coldstream. Yarra Glen Police Sergeant Richard Coulson said it had the potential to be worse, and reminded residents to do their research before burning off and have a contingency plan should the fire escape. “It’s a timely reminder that people burning off any items, need to refer to the CFA website and ensure they have suitable measures in place to extinguish or control any fire as conditions can invariably change rapidly, and this situation certainly had the potential to spread if it hadn’t been for the rapid response of attending CFA units, Sgt Coulson said.

Grass fire under investigation From Left: St Ronans co-owners and cider makers Philip Egglestone, Troy Jones, and Eric Driessen with the award-winning tipple. variety which is pretty unique and attributes to the quality we’re creating. With a focus on making ciders that are unique in Australia and produced from locally sourced fruit from their orchards, St Ronans offers something very special for your glass.

That something special can be clearly tasted and shown by their recent accolades. Troy said their secret ingredient was simply making ciders that they all enjoyed to drink. “Stylistically we’re making stuff we like to drink - that’s the essence of it, he said.

A fire that started on the medium strip along Old Healesville Road is being investigated by police. The fire started near Long Gully Road on Thursday 23 November around 12.15pm, and was quickly attended to by CFA services and extinguished. Emergency Services said the fire burnt an area of 30 by 10 metres.

orama and Mount Evelyn are a step closer to receiving improved mobile coverage, Mr Smith said. Locals are only too aware of the coverage issues; so now it is up to the telcos to put up their best tenders, he said. So far the Coalition Government has committed $60 million to address 106 priority locations across the country that have been identified as having poor or no mobile coverage, on top of the 765 locations already being addressed under the first two rounds of the Mobile Black Spot Program. Minister Fifield opened the priority round today, calling on telecommunication companies to participate in a tender to build new towers and improve coverage in these locations. “The Coalition continues to deliver more coverage to rural, regional and remote Australia, Minister Fifield said. “We’re already delivering 765 towers which will provide coverage for 32,000 homes and

Plans for improved mobile coverage in Chum Creek, Kalorama and Mount Evelyn are underway after the Mobile Black Spot Program identified them as priority locations in the Yarra Ranges. Minister for Communications, Senator the Hon Mitch Fifield, and Federal Member for Casey, Tony Smith, have announced three new locations in Casey under the Priority Locations funding round of the program. The news comes after earlier government funding delivered an operational tower in Steels Creek. Following funding in round two, planning and preparatory works are already currently underway for towers in East Warburton, McMahons Creek and Reefton. Mr Smith said it was great to see these areas receive improved mobile coverage especially in areas which were so isolated and bushfire prone. “It’s fantastic to see that Chum Creek, Kal-

Fuel not cool

Branching out, to help out

Mail readers might want to have a look at these photos of fuel prices on Thursday 16 November in Lilydale and Yarra Glen (pictured). How can they justify this ... 18 cents more expensive in Yarra Glen compared to Lilydale. You would have to wonder, to see the two service stations in Yarra Glen both having the same price and leaving the suburban fuel price cycle. Last month I was in north-west Victoria; and on that day, I could have bought fuel north-west of Bendigo cheaper than I could have in Yarra Glen. This is a disgrace ... I now travel to Lilydale to get my fuel at the cheaper price, but what about those that aren’t able to do that? Barry Sheffield, Yarra Glen.

“By taking time to clear up now, residents can make their properties safer in the event of an emergency and get rid of branches around their property for free. “Residents will have a second opportunity to get rid of bundled branches with a second collection taking place alongside our annual hard waste collection early in 2018.” Up to 20 bundles of branches may be placed by the roadside, at a maximum length of 1.5m long and 20cm in diameter. Cr Cox said that residents could add $79 or $85 to their annual rates to receive a 120-litre or 240-litre green waste bin to dispose of soft green waste. For more, visit www.yarraranges.vic.gov.au/ bundledbranches. To find out your collection date, visit www.yarraranges.vic.gov.au/myneighbourhood.

Yarra Ranges residents will be able to get fire ready and save on dropping off green waste, with council’s bi-annual bundled branch collection starting on Monday 27 November. Council will be collecting up to three cubic metres of bundled branches from properties over the coming three weeks, with the first week’s collection starting in the Yarra Valley, followed by council’s urban area and then the Dandenong Ranges. Yarra Ranges Mayor, Len Cox, said that, while clearing properties could be hard work, it could make the difference during the upcoming fire season. “Small branches, along with bark and twigs, make up fine fuels which can burn quickly in a bushfire,” Cr Cox said.

Easy planning is online Yarra Ranges residents are now able to easily find out if they need a planning permit for potential developments on their property. An expansion of council’s online service, ePlanning Enquire allows residents to enter their address and their proposed development to receive advice on whether a permit may be required. Details on what developments can and cannot go ahead can also be sourced. Enquire will provide advice on which zones and overlays are applicable to properties and the reasons why the need for a permit may be triggered.

The service can also provide a list of what documents and information you may need to provide when submitting your application. Yarra Ranges will be the first Victorian council to offer all three ePlanning modules Track, Enquire and Lodge. Track, which was launched earlier this year, allows residents to view, track and comment on planning applications. Lodge will enable the community to lodge applications electronically, using online payments and a customised checklist showing all the information they need to provide for applications, and will be launched early next year.

Yarra Ranges Council Director of Social and Economic Development, Ali Wastie, said the update to ePlanning services would make the planning process easier. “When planning out a project, it can be hard to navigate the zones and overlays to know whether you’ll need a planning permit for your property,” Ms Wastie said. “Enquire will remove the guesswork and provide advice 24 hours a day, reducing the time it takes to put an application together. “This will also reduce our environmental footprint by moving away from paper-based processes through ePlanning.”

Council will save an estimated $10,000 in printing costs annually. Residents can access ePlanning at yarraranges.vic.gov.au/track or yarraranges.vic.gov. au/enquire and customers without computer access can use computer terminals at all of Yarra Ranges Council’s Community Links.

Eye on gender equity in Yarra Ranges which includes disrespect and stereotypes that portray women as less capable. “It is our responsibility at council to role model positive behaviours and challenge gender stereotypes, to highlight the root causes that lead to violence.” School focused youth service co-ordinator, Anita Holman, said that for her gender equity meant learning how to be treated as equals, regardless of gender. “It means that I will challenge assumptions,” she said. “I try to push back when men do not take me seriously and I also try not to be derogatory toward men; I think we have great things to learn from each other. “I deserve to enjoy the same opportunities that are enjoyed by a man.” Indigenous Development Officer, Garry Detez, said his views on equity were formed growing up in an Aboriginal family and community.

“Gender equity to me means equal opportunity and equality of responsibility,” he said. “It also means the joy of regarding the opposite gender as of equal intellect and valuing their judgements, values and views as no less valuable than that of any male. “I seek to live in a society where everyone is valued and respected.” Council’s organisational development support officer, Dale McConchie, said challenging gender inequality in the community could be as simple as not putting up with sexist or demeaning jokes, language and behaviours and calling out inappropriate behaviour. On Tuesday, 21 November, council hosted family violence support service EDVOS CEO, Jenny Jackson, for a keynote speech at Box Hill Institute’s Lilydale Lakeside Campus. Yarra Ranges Council staff have shared their experience with gender equity and stereotypes as part of the 16 Days of Activism campaign to prevent men’s violence against women. 16 Days of Activism is a campaign that runs from International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (25 November) to Human Rights Day (10 December), encouraging action to end violence against women. Yarra Ranges Council CEO, Glenn Patterson, said council would hold sessions with staff to empower them to continue championing the message of gender equality. “We know that violence against women is wrong, but many people may not know about gender inequality and the ways it lays the foundations for that violence,” Mr Patterson said. “Having gender equity and equal treatment between men and women will reduce the underlying causes of violence against women,

Michael Smith As we welcome in another summer period, it is also a good time to reflect on the passing of the spring season in the Yarra Valley. Many wildflowers did not fare so well; almost certainly due to the dry period in early spring. This affected two of my favourites in the region, the small spider (Caladeniaparva) and Rosella spider orchid, as their flowering population was down in comparison to last year. Late spring, however, did provide consistent downpours of rain. As a result, bulbous wildflowers - such as golden lily (Bulbinebulbosa), milkmaids (Burchardiaumbellata) and yam daisies (Microseris lanceolate) - could be seen in large patches. Perhaps, the fantastic season last year also allowed for some species to stock up on their carbohydrate supplies to fuel their growth in 2017. Lasioglossum bees (the largest bee genius in the world) could be seen brushing up against the furry stigmas (female pollen collecting part) of Bulbine Bulbosa and collecting pollen from yam daisy anthers (male pollen producing part). Some of these bees from this species can look very much like honeybees, but the Lasioglossum bees are smaller in size and often have black and white stripes on their abdomen. In comparison, honey bees have yellow and black stripes on their abdomen. Eucalypt trees do not flower every year. Hence, it is a joyous occasion to see and

smell the flower heads when they do choose to blossom. The extra nectar and pollen provide a nutritious food source for insects and nectar feeding birds. The congregation of insects also provides further food for insectivore birds such as thornbills. Scarlet honeyeaters have been filling our forests with their red chests and mating calls since October. The nectar supplies for the scarlet honeyeaters has decreased due to a dry period further north in Victoria, and this has resulted in them flying further south to take advantage of the red box flowering this year. Although the red box trees are no longer producing new flower buds, yellow box (Eucalyptus melliodora) began blooming in November, and will hopefully continue to feed animal species for months to come. It was also a fantastic year for indigenous Acacia species in Melbourne. Golden wattle (Acacia pycnantha), silver wattle (Acacia dealbata) and blackwoods (Acacia melanoxylon) could be seen flowering in many forests. Acacias do not have a nectar supply, but instead hold a sugary substance in nodes along their leaf stems. Small insects such as thrips feed on the sugar. Predatory insects then feed on the thrips, which, in turn, attracts insectivore birds. If you get a chance, take a close look at the flower balls on the black aattle (Acacia mearnsii), which is flowering as we speak. Soon it will be time for other wildflowers, which can handle warmer temperatures, to flower. Keep your eyes peeled for the vanilla lilly (Arthropodium milleflorum).

Call goes out for drivers By Derek Schlennstedt Healesville Interchurch Community Care Inc (HICCI) is seeking volunteer drivers to help with the volunteer social transport service they offer. The service seeks to help individuals who cannot drive and are unable to catch public transport. Volunteer drivers are able to provide assistance by transporting clients to health appointments, day centres and a range of social activities within the community. Available to anyone with a full driver’s licence, the program offers locals a fantastic opportunity to help individuals who are unable to transport themselves to surrounding areas. All associated costs are paid for by HICCI and volunteers are provided with a company car, or if they prefer can use their own vehicle. “All you have to do is come in,” Alisson Gommers, executive officer at HICCI, said. Drivers can nominate what times best suit them and Ms Gommers said that feedback from the drivers showed that they really enjoyed building a relationship with the clients. “Every volunteer is part of the HICCI team and they're always made to feel part of the team." Particularly with the drivers they get to build some really nice relationships with the clients and the feedback we get is that they really enjoy that time," Ms Gommer said. Peter Hall, a driver with HICCI for over eight years said he found the role extremely fulfilling and enjoyed helping and driving others around. HICCI advises the drivers on when, where and how long the expected drive and pick-up will take. “We get the name and the time and the destination before accepting so we know what is going on,” he said.

Picture: ROB CAREW

Bill and Pearle Gamble with volunteer driver Peter Hall (right). 175156 “Initially I thought it was a good opportunity for doing something effective but I find it very fulfilling and for me being new to the area, it's great learning all about the history of the place, one of the best organisations ever worked for and they are very caring.” With flexibility to choose your own days, hours and times, even drivers with limited time availability are able to take part. For those who rely on the drivers, HICCI is

a godsend, allowing them to travel to vital appointments. Bill Gamble is one of the users of the service and said he didn’t know what he would do without them. “I’ve personally used HICCI several times now ... I don’t know how some people would get on without them,” he said. “These drivers do a fantastic job for very little.”

Despite the fantastic job drivers do, HICCI is struggling to meet the demand of patrons who rely on the service and asking for volunteers in the area who might have some spare time. HICCI is also in dire need of receptionists to help at the front desk. If you’re interested in becoming a volunteer, simply call 5911 600 or visit the HICCI office at 231 Maroondah Highway, Healesville. 12369297-EPJ48-17

Motors runnin’ for toys By Derek Schlennstedt Thousands of motorcyclists will gear up for the annual Melbourne Toy Run motorbike ride on 10 December, delivering charity and Christmas presents for those who need them most over the festive season. Last year the Melbourne Toy Run attracted more than 1000 bikers who began their journey from Victoria Park, Abbotsford, in a loop that also took in a long part of the Eastern Freeway, Yarra Boulevard and Johnston Street. This year, motorcyclists from the Yarra Valley can begin their journey from Healesville and ride as a group to the special event at 1-11 Wharf Road, Port Melbourne. Heather Ellis, motorcyclist from Healesville and co-organiser of the Toy Run said that last year the run raised over $15,000 in donations along with plenty of toys and food for those in need. “Donations of new non-fluffy toys, new clothes and clean blankets will help - so will non-perishable food including tins with ring pulls, long life milk and toiletries and new towels,” Ms Ellis said. “We’ve been doing it now since 2013 - it’s organised by the independent riders group that represents riders who aren’t in a motorcycle club,” she said. Heather said that every years the run got “bigger and bigger” and invited all riders to come along. “The great thing about it is you get all sorts of people on scooters, trikes, sport bikes, everything and they’re all riding to donate items.” At the event location prizes will be awarded on the day for best decorated motorcycle, sidecar, scooter and trike as well as best dressed male and female riders. Riders will depart from Healesville at 9am for the Toy Run venue at 1-11 Wharf Road, Port Melbourne. The event runs from 11am to 2pm.

Beechworth Bakery's Kylie gets into the Christmas spirit. 162861

Bakery taste The Cuckoo Restaurant is today a renowned smorgasbord restaurant receiving visitors from all over the globe.

Cuckoo’s fine fare A hills curiosity with a rich history, The Cuckoo is a traditional Bavarian restaurant. It was pioneered by Willi and Karin Koeppen. As The Cuckoo history goes, the once-modest refreshment stop was named after Karin heard the sound of a cuckoo calling during the night. Nowadays, The Cuckoo seats 450 people in three separate dining rooms and is renowned for its smorgasbords. And as assistant manager Simone Gordon explained, with a warm, ambient atmosphere, The Cuckoo advocates family togetherness

and does its best to provide an experience where people forget their troubles and have fun. “We are a strong, generational restaurant that is tried and tested over many years,” Simone said. “We have the winning combination of family, fun and audience participation, which creates the magic that attracts people again and again.” Drawing visitors from all over the globe, The Cuckoo combines excellent service and an all-you-can-eat policy for all food buffets, with traditional Bavarian entertainment.

“We offer value for money where you can eat as much as you want while enjoying the music and floor show,” Simone said. “But our focus is to combine being a part of people’s happy memories ... we want to create experiences where customers feel compelled to come back and experience the magic.” The Cuckoo Restaurant is located at 508 Mount Dandenong Tourist Road in Olinda. The local icon is a great place to consider over the Christmas period, too. For more information, phone (03) 9751 1003 or visit www.cuckoorestaurant.com.au.

Whether you’re a local or just passing through Healesville, you’ll never be disappointed with a visit to the Beechworth Bakery this festive season. The bakery has a long and proud history of serving high quality baked goods, as well as supporting the local community. Originally established in Beechworth, the Healesville bakery is one of six that are located in Victorian towns. Now a Healesville icon, the bakery combines old-fashioned service with modern facilities. Manager Kylie Bray says that customers are drawn to the personal touch provided by the employees. “We offer great customer service and enthusiastic and friendly staff to cater for our customers’ needs,” she said. Open seven days a week, from 6am to 6pm, the bakery is in the perfect location on the Maroondah Highway in Healesville. It caters for groups of all sizes and offers a huge car park, capable of holding anything from motorbikes to caravans.

Hit TV show: our actress By Derek Schlennstedt Homegrown Healesville talent Senie Priti was a recent addition on the TV finale of the ABC’s Dr Blake Mysteries. The daughter of local restaurateur, Antar Firak of The Bodhi Tree Cafe, recently appeared in the ABC telemovie, alongside veteran Aussie actors Craig McLachlan, Nadine Garner and John Woods. In the dramatic season 5 finale to the hit TV show, Senie played Peggy Allen, a vengeful character who has been scorned by a man she once loved. “I played Peggy Allen, she was a family friend of the Tynemans, John Wood being the patriarch of the Tynemans,” Senie said. “My character and Edward Tyneman were once betrothed to each other, and the idea is one day they’ll grow up and get married, but that doesn’t go to plan, and he’s not very kind to her.” “A lot of her storyline is dealing with the repercussions of that ... It was a great experience playing Peggy, there’s a depth and complexity to her story.” Senie has also worked on a number of award-winning short films, including Daughter (2016), starring alongside Katherine Langford (13 Reasons Why).

Though this was Senie’s first time featuring in a TV show, she said it was extremely interesting to see what occured behind the camera. “Super fun, so much fun, it’s quite fastpaced because you don’t have much time to do everything, you have to be there and get it right, right away, it’s exciting, fun and fast paced,” Senie said of her time on the show. “The cast and crew were an absolute delight to work with.” The much-loved period crime show The Doctor Blake Mysteries on the ABC came to a close in September, though those who missed the finale ‘family portrait’ can watch the show and Senie’s portrayal of Peggy on ABC iView.

Healesville actress Senie Priti appeared in the much-loved '60s crime show The Doctor Blake Mysteries on the ABC.

Deck the Heales-ville for Christmas By Derek Schlennstedt This Christmas deck the Heales-ville and help beautify and decorate Healesville Main Street. Healesville Lions Club and Rotary have once again partnered up with Yarra Ranges Council to bring Christmas cheer to all who travel through Healesville. The competition, which last year invited businesses along the main street in town to illuminate their shopfronts with lights and decorations, is being run again this year. Lions club president Lindsay Frost said that there had been a few changes from last year, mainly to the number of prizes they were giving out, noting that there were so many worthy winners last year that it was hard to choose. The competition will now have 11 prizes in total - a first prize of $500, five second-place $200 prizes and five third-place $100 prizes. “The big change there is that last year we had less prizes, and it’s almost unfair to say

you came second or third - when there were so many worthy of it.” “We’re spreading the love,” he said. Mr Frost said 2016’s competition saw 22 entrants, which he hoped would increase this year, and urged businesses to take part in the Christmas cheer- even those not on the main street. “The idea is to have windows decorated so people can see the decorations leading up to Christmas,” Mr Frost said. “Essentially a main street business focus, the whole idea behind it was to decorate up the town.” “Silver mist studio is always very creative and we also encourage people at Monda Lodge to have a go - we certainly encourage that and can go jump in the cars - doesn’t have to be all main street.” Mr Frost emphasised that the change in prizes was due to the difficulty in judging the competition, which he said was always very

close - last year the top five were judged within four points of each other. Judging the tough competition this year is Kath Gannaway, Fiona McAllister and two member of Rotary, along with another two from the Lions club. Mr Frost said judging usually came down to the wire, but said it wasn’t always about the biggest or brightest, but that which had the most love and effort in it. “People do put in some sensational efforts,” Mr Frost said. “Judging is based partly on feelgood elements, the structured part of it - in terms of usage of materials, usage of lighting, and a few things that go into making up the structure.” Mr Frost encouraged businesses to sign up for the competition and to brighten the town, which he said was appreciated by tourists and residents. The competition is for Christmas decoration treatments that are visible at street level,

The Vanishing is a riveting Franco-Dutch thriller from 1988, and was screened at the Healesville Memorial Hall by the Yarra Ranges Film Society on 21 November. The film initially follows a close Dutch couple, Leo (Gene Bervoets) and Saskia (Johanna ter Steege), on holiday in France, only for Saskia to disappear. The opening act establishes how devastating Saskia’s disappearance is for Leo, but the film soon switches perspectives, and the viewer becomes deeply invested in the life of Saskia’s abductor, who is quickly identified to us as Raymond (Bernard-Pierre Donnadieu), a French chemistry professor and sociopath. In following Raymond’s often grimly funny experiences, we find ourselves almost liking him. He is considerate and good-humoured,

and devoted to his wife and children. He lives by a perverse yet elegant moral philosophy, and his earnest, bumbling enthusiasm as he rehearses his kidnappings is strangely endearing, just as it is profoundly unsettling. In the entrancing slow-burn of the narrative, the heavy tension isn’t just derived from Leo’s burning obsession to learn what happened to Saskia, or Raymond’s cat-and-mouse manipulation of Leo’s grief, as Raymond promises to reveal what he did to Saskia while still holding all the power. The suspense of The Vanishing is amplified from within ourselves - in Raymond, we are confronted with a reasonable monster. We are simultaneously intrigued and repelled by him, and disturbed by our own reactions to him. The YRFS screens an acclaimed classic or foreign film every month at the Warburton and Healesville cinemas. - Seth Hynes mailcommunity.com.au

HOME FOCUS

YARRA VALLEY RURAL PACKAGE HERE is the ultimate small farm package

(25.1 acres, 10.34 hectares) lying in Wandin East in the heart of the Yarra Valley and well within the eastern suburbs commuter belt. It is currently a small commercial cherry and apricot orchard but possesses the land, water and excellent infrastructure to suit a myriad of small farm applications. It could be used as an orchard, or for berry growing, wine production or those with interests in horses. Stunning views from all front windows, out over the three-quarter verandah and cherry trees, now in full fruit and then out to the mountains and beyond. The home is of a typical Australian colonial style, almost entirely surrounded by wide timber-decked verandahs, but a look a little deeper reveals this was not an inexpensive build, with ornate architraving, Tasmanian Myrtle flooring in the kitchen and lounge and beautiful American Oak kitchen cupboards complementing dark granite benchtops. Four spacious bedrooms and a large open living style family room help create two defined living areas, together with a genuine “parents retreat” with ensuite, large walk-in robe and separate private study, located at the other end of the home. Just add to this the benefit of costsaving solar power generating about 5.4kva through 22 panels and year-round heating and pleasant climate control assured through a combination of a central Coonara wood heater and a ducted electric split-

the property. Water is in abundance here with a huge domestic supply (180,000 litres) to tanks provided from large roof areas and the home and shedding. All improvements are in excellent condition and are of a “top notch” standard and a real feature is the huge 20m x

system with LPG furnace back-up. Outside it could be argued there is much more of this property to see, with rich volcanic red soils gently sloping to a permanent creek and a large catchment dam within the title, providing supply for its 10-megalitre irrigation licence pumped through underground mains to all areas on

30m (600 square metre) industrial-style warehouse/packing shed which can have so many alternative applications. Well-fenced paddocks provide pasture for stock and a grove of scattered mature gums will ensure a virtually limitless supply of firewood. ●

Rain hampers some results By Chris Anderson YARRA VALLEY CRICKET ASSOCIATION With day one significantly hampered by a stormy interlude, the big question going into day two with most Round 7 clashes was could either side press for victory with the time remaining in the contest. Some positive cricket ensured most games did indeed end with a result. In DJ Strachan Shield action, Yarra Glen entered day two of their clash with WarburtonMillgrove in the driver’s seat, sitting comfortably at 1/93. A lot would ride on their experienced top order if they were to remain in the driver’s seat. Brendan Ricci (88) and Andy Cowan (42) to pick up where they left off on day one, heaping the pressure on the highly fancied Burras to take quick wickets to make a play at victory. Ricci and Cowan batted a significant amount of time, taking overs and time away from the visitors. Cowan’s dismissal gave Warburton-Millgrove an opening at an inexperienced middle order, but John O’Donnell (71) recovered from an innings stalling injury last week, strode to the wicket and continued the dominance. Classy half centuries to Ricci and O’Donnell gave some substance to the score, while their determination ensured the home side would leave no bonus overs for their opposition as they consumed all of their allotted overs. A score of 5/234 was going to prove a tough task for the visitors, but there was enough time for both sides to press for victory. Unfortunately for the contest, rain again intervened at an inappropriate stage of the match. On the back of a swift partnership from Sean Humphrey (30 not out) and Liam Barnard (26 not out), the score had rattled on to 1/73 inside 15 overs. The rain, however, would not abate in time, and stumps were drawn on the match when it was poised for a great finish. Although disappointed with the game finish, both sides would be pleased to gain some reward for their efforts. Mount Evelyn remain at the top of the ladder after manufacturing a victory against Seville, despite being behind the eight ball after day one. Seville resumed at 2/111 and with great determination to bat their overs, Leigh Aitkins and Marcus Smith made an assured start despite some tidy bowling from the visitors. Aitkins brought up a fighting half century, but a loose shot soon had him walking back to the pavilion, and that’s where the procession followed. The Blues lost 8/25 in a calamitous 17-over period handing the visitors an achievable target, while throwing some bonus overs into the equation. Mount Evelyn leaders Kane Jones (3/46) and Gareth Fraser (3/28) did just that, led a solid all-round fielding display from the Mounters. The visitors left with a chase of 154 off 55 overs. The chase was always on track with Daniel Giblin controlling the contest with a free flowing innings of 61. Three consecutive sixes from the bowling of Mark Sandfort had the Mounters racing to victory. With Smith removing Giblin, the third wicket of the innings, as he had total control of the game, the innings slowed against some excellent bowling from Seville captain Matt Hadlum (3/51). Add to that a rain delay, and things tightened. Unperturbed, Kane Jones (44 not out) and Troy Hancock (20 not out) continued their measured approach to the innings until the end was in sight. With a flurry of boundaries, the target was reached with six wickets in hand. Yarra Junction made sure Mount Evelyn wouldn’t skip too far away in the rankings as they disposed of a disappointing Healesville outfit. Resuming at 3/68, and the experienced Ash Hamer and Brandon D’Amore at the wicket, the Bloods still had direction of the game in mailcommunity.com.au

their hands. That was quickly erased as Nick Bark (5/29), and his offsider Nick Lawlor (2/30) made short work of the Bloods middle and lower order. Lost time from day one soon became a nonissue as the home team lost 7/16 to be all out for a deflating 84. Yarra Junction had a few wobbles upfront in their chase, with Dermott Fry (3/29) removing three early wickets, giving his team and outside chance of challenging the Eagles. However, the paltry target proved an easy chase, as British import Andy Wear (44 not out) and his crew secured a comprehensive sevenwicket victory. In RA Finger Trophy action, Coldstream and Gruyere fought out a thrilling draw, fitting of a grand final rematch. Coldstream batted on with their experienced top order in the shed as young stars Daniel Sharp (48) and Michael Pezzimenti (44) ensured the Crocs scoreboard would continue to tick over. Regular wickets kept things in check, but a final total of 205 would prove to be a handy one for the visitors. Gruyere took a positive approach to the chase with some free flowing batting, but rain, regular wickets and a determined Coldstream attack ensured they would be fighting to get to the target. Club stalwarts Jared Carroll (36) and Sean Lowe (26) gave the innings some substance, but with the score 7/127 when stumps were drawn, the Scorpions could consider themselves a little lucky to escape with a draw. Coldstream maintain the spot a top the Finger Trophy ladder, but with the draw, the challengers are closing. Woori Yallock moved within half a game of the Crocs with a solid victory against Launching Place. Batting on, the Tigers reached 7/193 courtesy of some middle order runs from Stephen Morgan (45). A tight display from the Launch bowlers, led by Andy Vandervlught (3/20) ensured the innings wouldn’t get away from them, and the target loomed as achievable. Stuart Parker put his head down, determined to give his team their first taste of victory, and produced a brilliant unbeaten innings of 72. The problem for Parker was he lacked partners to give the chase a decent shake. Added to that the fact that they only had nine batters on the park, and it added up to 68 run loss to the home side after they were bowled out for 125. Playing against his former side, Lochie Winter-Annette (3/32) led the wicket takers in an even performance from the Woori bowlers. In the final game of the round, Wandin produced a memorable victory against Hoddles Creek to turnaround a recent run of outs. Sitting at 6/111 overnight, Wandin were precariously placed. Would their innings be swiftly rounded off, or could they muster enough resistance to add some beef to their total? David Wallace (59) and Lachlan Sinnott (27) ensured it would be the latter as they dug in and added valuable runs in a significant partnership. In the end, the Bulldogs were able to bat out their allotted overs and push their total out to a challenging 8/187. Liam Rowe (3/64) and Stuart Simmonds (2/15) were the pick of the Wombats' bowlers. With the momentum well and truly in the Bulldogs' camp, Sinnott gave them the perfect start with a couple of early strikes removing the experienced Warwick Weir and Simmonds and the ball was rolling for the visitors. Luke Hetherington provided some stability at the top of the order; but despite some lusty hitting from Will Trotter and Daniel Rowe, the Wombats always seemed to be fighting a losing clause with regular wickets falling. In the end, they were bowled out for 119, handing Wandin a moral boosting 68-run victory.

DJ Strachan Shielf and RA Finger Trophy Yarra Glen 5/234 (B. Ricci 88, J. O’Donnell 71, A. Cowan 42, J. Nelson 2/37, N. Andueza 1/21) drew with Warburton-Millgrove 1/73 (S. Humphrey 30*, L. Barnard 26*, B. Styles 1/25);

Turn back the clock North Melbourne champion Michael Spud Firrito is set to turn back the clock, signing on with AFL Yarra Ranges team, Gembrook, for season 2018. In a major coup for the Brookers , the dour defender will return to his home club and add to his tally of senior games for the club. Firrito made his senior debut in the premiership-winning 2000 season. It was the only time he would run out alongside his older brother, Carl (a former skipper at the Brookers) in the same team. Silver club’s new sparkle

HEALESVILLE BOWLS Healesville 1 travelled to play Ringwood 3 on their grass green on a very humid day. Ringwood held sway at the break, leading 50/36. It then settled down to a tense struggle, with Healesville pegging back their lead and getting their nose in front towards the end. Only to be overrun in the last few ends, going down 72/79 in a close-fought loss. Healesville 1 - 4/72 lost to Ringwood 3 - 14/79

King of the greens seen

Yarra Ranges Athletics were represented by 17 teams at the Eastern Metro Region Relay Championships on Saturday. All teams ran exceptionally well with some outstanding performances, a result of all the training. The club finished with three silvers, one bronze and a whole lot of smiles.

Well done and thank you to Malcolm and Sophie for coaching, Michael, Trish, Katie and the many others for support on the day. The seniors competed at various venues on Sunday with many going to either Frankston or Aberfeldie tracks. Results are not yet available. The littlies enjoyed a fun night of Twilight athletics on Friday night. After a fantastic warm-up led by Brayden, Noah and Tayleb a club versus club shuttle relay was held. Athletes then competed at a range of events with their fellow clubmates, which was thoroughly enjoyed by athletes and parents - until

Zac and Maddie Under 12s 800m. 175581 the storm came. The next round of Little Athletic athletics is the Multi Event round. Be there early for set-up and extra events. Bring a friend if you want! The seniors travel to Ringwood (or Doncaster) on Saturday afternoon for Round 7 of AV Shield. Four club athletes will be representing Victoria at the Australian School Track and Field Championships in Adelaide next weekend. Georgia Laven (800 & 1500), Tayleb Willis (200m Hurdles), Maddie Laven (800) and Indi Linde (1500m). Good luck all of you! Stroke and M. McGrann ‘Bag-day’ play-off: Jason King has won the bag with 96/67 round. Well done, Jason. But, the daily winner was Tex Van Der Kooi with 39 super-impressive points. Runner-up was evergreen Ossie McClay with 38, on a countback. Balls got down to 34. NTPs went to Ian Garside (3rd) and to Old-Man-River Hubbard (10th). Twilight: This week’s winner was Bruno Kennedy, with 22 impressive points, on a countback from John Hall. Balls extended to 18, also on a countback. NTP winners were Sean Kennedy (15th) and Neil Leckenby for a super second shot on the 11th.

SATURDAY Stroke and final round of our club championships. A Grade went to Ben Lord with a great Nett 66. The best round of the day - in fact for the week - was scored by Ralph Logan, with an incredible Nett 64, to earn him the B Grade voucher. Great work, Ralph! The ball rundown extended to 70. NTPs were won by The V man (3rd), Luke Patrick (5th), Andy Lockey (9th), Alan Johnston (12th) and to Adam Patrick (15th).

Club Championship Over the three weekends, the club was lucky to have fairly good golfing weather. Numbers

were pleasing as over 60 of members contested the championships. The Open male winner was President Williams, who ‘came from the clouds’ to pip Junior Cross by two strokes. Andrew shot a great 70 in the last round to snare his sixth title. Jon had a great tournament just falling at the last hurdle to the experienced ‘Willo’. Seven-time winner, Paul Mason, claimed third, just two strokes behind Junior. New member, Clint Toohey, proved with his four round total, that he won’t be in B Grade much longer, as he romped away with that title by a dozen shots. Another new member, Vahagan Sargsyan, also performed steadily to be runner-up. Young tyro, Angus Smith, grabbed both third and the Junior title to underline the enormous potential he has in the game of golf. The C Grade champion is the wily old campaigner, Kevin Kane. He won by a steady 16 shots, showing all his vast experience. Kevin is well into his 70s now, but shows no signs of his scores deteriorating! Andrew McMath came in second, after a couple of great scores. Numbers were down in the Ladies Championships. This meant it was always going to be a ‘walk in the park’ for the hugely talented Kim Kennedy to become the Open Champion. But, she was ’pipped’ in the Elva Eddy Nett event by Lynda Dickson. Lynda played close to her handicap in all three rounds - a super effort.

MOTORING

Bumper to bumper looks Toyota’s all-new Camry sedan, launched this month, has undergone a dramatic redesign from bumper to bumper that results in a premium, high-quality car focused on performance and technology. The latest Camry is built on a new platform that underpins more emotional styling, new powertrains with higher power and better fuel economy, a revamped chassis that sharpens driving dynamics and advanced new safety technologies. Eighth-generation Camry represents a new era for Toyota in Australia - the first time in 30 years that Toyota has offered a fully imported Camry range to the Australian market. The new model is produced in Japan. Camry is the first sedan to adopt Toyota’s New Global Architecture (TNGA), which has transformed the way Toyota vehicles are designed, engineered and packaged. TNGA enables greater freedom in design, resulting in a more athletic profile with a lower roof and bonnet, a better driving position and improved dynamics due to its lower centre of gravity and greater torsional rigidity. Two new powertrains are offered - a redesigned hybrid system with a new direct-injection four-cylinder engine that delivers more power, flexibility and efficiency and a stunning new V6 engine with direct-injection technology and an eight-speed transmission. There are a raft of Camry firsts: direct fuelinjection engines, fully independent rear suspension, 19-inch alloy wheels, drive mode select, LED headlamps, an electric parking brake, 10-inch head-up display and a segment-first opening panoramic roof, plus across-theboard adoption of active cruise control and a pre-collision safety system with autonomous emergency braking. Toyota’s senior divisional manager sales

The stylish new Camry. 175555 and marketing Sean Hanley said the new range represented the largest generational change for Camry since the nameplate was introduced in 1983. “All-new Camry builds on the car’s proven reputation for quality, durability, reliability, space, comfort and safety while injecting greater visual appeal and a fun driving experience with rapid acceleration and crisp handling," Mr Hanley said. “Sharp pricing adds remarkable value to an all-new Camry that looks great while offering an unprecedented level of driving enjoyment and improved fuel economy," he said. “New Camry has all the ingredients to continue as Australia’s best-selling mid-size car, a position it has held for the past 23 years in a row."

Toyota has adopted new grade names: Ascent and Ascent Sport (4-cylinder petrol or hybrid), SX (4-cylinder or V6) and SL (all three powertrains). Prices have been reduced for six of the nine new Camry variants while increases on the other three are outweighed by additional features. For the new hybrid powertrain, with combined power output rising to 160kW, prices have been improved compared with the petrol variants and the market. Camry SX and SL with the new 224kW, 362Nm V6 engine are just $4000 more than their four-cylinder siblings. Camry comes with Toyota Service Advantage at just $195 for up to the first five services - now with 12-month intervals.

Sure to please, the Toyota Camry. 175555
