The editor’s desk The seat of Noosa has had its swings over the years and this election is no exception as Independent Sandy Bolton looks set to take the reins from LNP’s Glen Elmes whose rule began in 2006 when he won the seat from Labor’s Cate Molloy. It will be the first time an Independent has been voted in making it a significant upset for the major parties - and brings with it the possibility the new MP will hold the balance of power in the state, which is what has been tipped throughout the campaign. Since 1989 Noosa has bounced from Liberal Party’s Bruce Davidson in 1992 to Labor’s Cate Molloy in 2001 to Glen Elmes in 2006. The LNP has shown its popularity in neighbouring electorates with Dan Purdie looking set to take over the new seat of Ninderry and Marty Hunt in Nicklin replacing long-term MP Peter Wellington who retired at this election. Interesting times in politics. ● - Margaret Maccoll

THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT… BIG PARTIES LOSE FIGHT Independent Sandy Bolton got straight to work this week relinquishing her roles on various boards while she awaited the official count for the Noosa electorate with cautious optimism. Ms Bolton attributed her anticipated toppling of long-term LNP incumbent Glen Elmes to identifying the community’s long-term problems and showing people she could deliver. “Together with hundreds of amazing supporters, we took the fight up to the big parties with a really spectacular grassroots campaign,” she said. “The vote of the major parties declined dramatically in Noosa. “It seems clear that, without fundamental change, they will continue their decline in the electorate.” If the count goes her way, Ms Bolton has plans to change the way electorate offices operate.

Election night celebrations for Sandy Bolton and her campaign team.
“We want a dynamic team and we’re looking at developing a model to take the whole community along for the ride,” she said. Ms Bolton said as a councillor she made use of technology such as Facebook to host forums and establish
groups and hoped to do something similar in conjunction with using traditional forms of communication. While the counting of postal and preferential votes may continue until next week, there were indications on Saturday night a change was imminent.
PARKING WOES COME TO A HEAD Hastings Street Association (HSA) president Shane Harvey said staff parking was not a new problem. It was an issue he discussed with all staff prior to employment. “This has been going on for a long time at Noosa. We’ve just started to address it.” This month Noosa Council responded to requests from the association to introduce three and four-hour restrictions from 8am-5pm at parking areas at Noosa Heads Lions Park and next to #2 Hastings Street, which are regularly used by local employees. Mr Harvey said his 30 employees used a combination of mopeds, public transport and ride-sharing and parking in Noosa Woods. While his staff may be happy with the arrangements, many others have taken to social media to vent their anger and councillors have weighed into the online debate on Noosa Community Noticeboard Facebook. A petition set up by employees has gained almost 200 signatures protesting the parking limits. Councillor Ingrid Jackson said the new parking restrictions followed a survey conducted by HSA showing 120 to 200 employees parked daily in the Hasting Street precinct and introducing time limits would allow parking for 400 or more cars. Glenn Zerafa said it was interesting that having identified via a survey that

Cr Jess Glasgow said he disagreed with the implementation of parking restrictions without first consulting employees. Deputy Mayor Frank Wilkie said he welcomed the business-led initiative aimed at freeing up Hastings Street’s limited parking for residents and visitors. He said it was in keeping with council’s Noosa Transport Strategy which, among other things, aimed to encourage residents and visitors to walk, bike, scooter and use public transport, instead of driving cars and manage traffic and transport better to reduce traffic and parking congestion. “Although the 3P and 4P signs are
The ABC’s election analyst Antony Green called the election for Sandy Bolton in the evening. Ms Bolton’s supporters, including some Noosa councillors, celebrated at Zabe Espresso Bar at Tewantin while a sedate group of Mr Elmes’ supporters watched the televised election coverage. On Saturday night, Mr Elmes thanked his long-term campaign supporters, his staff and family who stood by him during his 11 years in office. “I’ve put my family through a lot the last 11 years,” he said. “I just want to say how grateful I am for their support and love, I really do.” This week, Mr Elmes was not taking phone calls. His office staff were clearing out the office, and said he was awaiting the results of the election count and might or might not release a statement. ●
now in place, an amnesty applies until Boxing Day to give Hastings Street workers time to adjust to the changes before they’re enforced,” he said. Council expects the changes to boost public transport use, particularly highfrequency buses running between Noosa Junction - which has all-day parking - and Hastings Street. “Change is always difficult. We’re urging community patience as we implement these changes, and other measures to be introduced over the coming years as we strive to preserve the things we love about Noosa in the face of increasing pressures.“ View the Stop taking all staff car parking petition at https://www.thepetitionsite. com/750/461/355/stop-taking-all-staffparking/?taf_id=45939812&cid=fb_na ●
The new seat of Ninderry is set to welcome its first MP with former police officer LNP’s Dan Purdie stepping into the role. This week, while he waited for his position to be officially announced, he was “getting his affairs in order” and coming to terms with being “no longer a copper”. “It hasn’t really sunk in,” he said. “I got into my business clothes and said to my wife, right, what do I do now? Then I got hundreds of calls. The police force was wanting my resignation. The clerk of Parliament was on the phone. I don’t have an office or staff. It’s a new seat and I’m a rookie MP. I’ve got a lot to learn.” Mr Purdie said he would be hitting the ground running and was already establishing a listening post for his constituents to contact him. On Tuesday, he met with LNP Leader Tim Nicholls and Deputy Leader Deb Frecklington along with other new likely MPs from Pumicestone and the Sunshine Coast seats including Nicklin’s Marty Hunt who is likely to claim the seat from retiring Speaker Tony Wellington. ●

COVER STORY
IMMIGRANT TEACHER TURNS PROLIFIC WRITER F BY HOLLIE HARRIS
ar away in Scotland the lure of an advertisement to ‘Come and Teach in the Sun’ showing a man in budgie smugglers, a gown and mortarboard caught the eye of a young primary school teacher. Maggie Christensen took up that invitation and set off to Australia to escape the cold, damp climate she grew up in and began teaching in the Western Suburbs of Sydney. In the years to come, Maggie would complete several degrees in Education, move on to teach in tertiary education, meet the love of her life and eventually become a manager for a Learning and Development unit in a Health Service, where she also managed a state-wide Registered Training Organisation. It was around this time, that Maggie began to write her first novel.
“I wrote The Sand Dollar over a number of years,” Maggie said. “It was something I’d always wanted to do, but never made time for. I ran an education department in health, like Jenny (in The Sand Dollar.) I faced a redundancy, and like Jenny I spent time in US while negotiating the redundancy,” she said. She went on to publish Band of Gold, a story about a middle-aged English teacher living in Sydney and hasn’t stopped writing since. “I love to create characters who my readers can relate to, who appear in future books like old friends,” she said. With an ever-growing base of loyal fans that enjoy reading about mature women living fulfilled lives, Maggie now lives here in Noosa with her husband Jim, who is also an author. She has just published her seventh novel. Maggie says that Australian publishing houses are rarely
interested in books about older protagonists, considering them too difficult to market. “Many readers are over 50. This was the generation that spawned Young Adult literature and are now baby boomers. A reviewer said (about my books) that it is refreshing to read about women who aren’t twenty-somethings and wanting to have babies,” she said. Her novels portray mature women in life-changing situations. They are heart-warming stories of second chances about women in their forties, fifties and sixties. “I believe that older women and the events which impact on their lives are often ignored in literature. Life for older women presents similar and different challenges to their younger counterparts,” she said. Rather than conform to publishing trends, Maggie stayed true to her genre known as mature women’s fiction, boomer lit, seasoned romance or life lit.

Inspired by authors Lis Byrski and Hilary Boyd who also write about older women, Maggie explores issues which only emerge over time, such as ageing and death of parents, retrenchment, retirement, downsizing, grown children, grandchildren, widowhood and the empty nest syndrome. “More and more social media groups seem to be setting up to feed this genre which is mostly peopled by indie authors. “I’ve chosen to be an indie author (selfpublish) because I’m a bit of a control freak. I don’t want to have to change my story or the title and I want to choose my own cover - one which suits the story and with an image that looks like the character in the book. I want to set my own deadlines. I think I may be too old to work to someone else’s deadlines,” Maggie said. Maggie's love for books began as a young girl in Scotland. Growing up in a house full of adults, she became an avid reader. “I loved to lose myself in a book. I remember long warm summers when the
daylight seemed to last forever, and icy cold winters with snow and frost,” she said. “I always wanted to write, to see my books in bookshops and to have a book launch. My first book launch at Annie’s Books on Peregian was a dream come true.” Like a young Maggie, many people tend to imagine the life of a writer to be romantic and glamourous, but there is an intense process behind a finished novel and a great deal of dedication. “It takes around six months for the first draft. Then there is a lot of re-writing and editing before it goes to my critique partner, then my beta readers, then my editor. “I have a goal to write at least 1000 words before I go out to meet friends for coffee, do my volunteer work with Friends of Noosaville Library. I select and deliver books to a woman who is housebound or catch up with any other chores. I can then go back to my writing later in the day.” “It is hard work, and I’m very good at procrastinating. But it’s a wonderful feeling
when the words start to flow and the characters take over the story. I do confess to hating the marketing that must be done when I’d rather be writing. “I love becoming lost in another world with the characters I create, and I feel a thrill when readers tell me they love my writing.” “It’s worth it all to see your words in print and to find people who love what you write,” Maggie said. Maggie looks for inspiration everywhere. She has written books set in Scotland, America and even right here in Noosa. “My husband and I were walking along the Noosa River one Sunday morning when we saw a woman sitting there with an empty bottle of wine. I knew there had to be a story in it, so I began to write Rosa’s story,” Maggie said. And Champagne For Breakfast came to life telling the story of Rosa Taylor celebrating her 50th birthday with champagne by the river on her own. After
finishing a six-year long affair with her boss, Rosa is desperate to avoid him in the workplace and determined to forge a new life for herself. “My latest book is set in Scotland. I’m often asked why I haven’t set a book in Scotland so, when writing Broken Threads, I gave one of the minor characters, Bel, an ageing aunt in Scotland. I had an aunt who loved to tell me stories of her own ill-fated romance when I was a child and teenager and had always planned to write her story, but wasn’t sure how. This is it.” Maggie's advice to a budding writer? “Keep writing, keep reading and never give up." Meet Maggie Christensen and grab a copy of her latest novel The Good Sister at River Read this Friday 1 December 10amnoon, and at Annie’s Books on Peregian on Saturday 9 December 10am-noon. ●

OPEN FOR SURF CLUB VIEWS A new Facebook group, Peregian Surf Club Supporters Group, formed by active members of the Peregian Beach Surf Lifesaving Club is set to reflect all community views about a renewed surf club at Peregian and share information transparently. The Peregian Surf Club Supporters Group has been established by Peregian Beach lifesavers Leigh and Rob McCready who are “strong supporters” of Noosa surf club’s proposal, and say there is much support for it locally. Leigh said while they were members of the Peregian Beach Community Association, they did not share the association’s call to redevelop on the current site. “We’ve been involved in the local community for a long time, and over the years we have been members of the Peregian Beach Community Association as well as the local traders association, Community House, kindergarten, school and tennis club. We know how important a vibrant and sustainable surf live saving club is for our community,” Rob said. Rob said the Peregian community including Peregian Springs now contained more than 11,000 residents compared to almost 7500 in 2011 and the new proposed building at 1060sqm was smaller than clubs at Coolum or Noosa. “A new clubhouse would attract new members who would bring their friends and
Leigh McCready with her son Jake, 8, and mother Di McCready. families; our nippers could train at Peregian again, and we could begin to re-build the sense of community which has been hard to maintain with no central meeting place," Leigh said. “What needs to be understood by the Peregian community is the alternative if the proposed new club does not generate clear
community support. Noosa SLSC will have to walk away from their 'caretaker’ role, and the club will be handed over to Surf Lifesaving Queensland for administration and storage purposes. There would be no volunteer surf lifesavers on Peregian Beach, no nippers, no school kids and young adults training and competing, and an outdated
clubhouse building that may never open again.” The Peregian Beach Community Association (PBCAI) president Barry Cotterell said Peregians needed a modest surf club consistent with the size of the community. “It does not need a monster megastructure overlooking the dunes, three times the size of the existing club house,” he said. Mr Cotterell said moving the club seaward was unsafe and Noosa Council had advised the Noosa Club that any development application outside of the existing lease area would be unlikely to be approved. “The Noosa Club have ignored the loss of open space and parking, the obstruction of residents’ views and the impact of noise. Peregian community is opposed to pokies or a casino to fund the surf club” he said. “We are a smaller community here. But rather than using their huge membership numbers to impose their will on Peregian, we urge the Noosa Club to work with the community and the council to build an architect-designed club in scale with the village on the existing site.” For more information, visit Peregian Surf Club Supporters Group Facebook on https://www.facebook.com/groups/ PeregianSurfClub/ or text 04000 53444 to be added to the newsletter distribution list or visit PBCAI on https://www.facebook.com/ PeregianBeachCommunityAssociation/ ●

A year on from its introduction, the Vulnerable Persons Unit is under review by Noosa police, but confidence in its effectiveness in combating domestic violence has led to its staffing for next year. The unit, which has officers from Noosa and Coolum, targets first or second time high-risk domestic violence offenders using support and referral in a bid to halt further occurrences. Noosa Senior Sergeant Ben Carroll said officers attended court to explain orders granted by the court in a bid to reduce possible breaches. “We’re getting on the front foot, trying to nip it in the bud,” he said. The unit also works with support organisations across Noosa to assist with families with emergency accommodation, food and security. Snr Sgt Carroll said a lot of police time was spent dealing with domestic violence matters and there was support to assign officers to the specialised unit. He said the review was important to ensure their responses were accurate. Saturday 25 November marked White Ribbon Day that highlights the campaign calling for men across Australia to speak

BIG PUSH AGAINST COLTON MINE BY MARGARET MACCOLL The protest against the New Hope Colton Coal mine gained considerable backing on Sunday when one of Australia’s leading nature conservationists, John Sinclair, announced his support at an anti-mine concert at Noosaville. In 1971 Dr Sinclair founded the Fraser Island Defenders Organisation (FIDO) and headed the campaigns to cease sandmining, gain World Heritage recognition, stop logging and improve recreation management on Fraser Island. On Sunday, Dr Sinclair said the mine’s open cut method raised concerns about the leaching of acids and heavy metals from a water-filled mine cavity into waterways and food chain, and the potential effects on the surrounding area including the Mary River and Sandy Strait. “After the mining stops, the hole will still
be there,” he said. Dr Sinclair said protests had led to a Federal Government review of the project, but he called on people to support the campaign by raising money to fund research to provide strong evidence on the mine’s potential effects and to raise public awareness of the environment. The New Hope Group gained Queensland Government mining lease approval for its Colton coal project in May. The project is located on undeveloped State land 10km north of Maryborough and west of Hervey Bay, and lies within the Susan River catchment - a tributary of the Mary River. New Hope Group’s managing director Shane Stephan said the approval, “provided after thorough review of potential impacts demonstrates that the environmental credentials of the project stack up”. ●

RESEARCH ON TRANSPORT SAVINGS Researchers have provided the most detailed map of routes and costings across Australia’s entire agricultural supply chain, potentially saving the industry millions of dollars annually. The CSIRO researchers have applied the logistics tool TraNSIT (Transport Network Strategic Investment Tool) to 98 per cent of agriculture transport across Australia including commodities such as beef, sheep, goats, dairy, pigs, poultry, grains, cotton, rice, sugar, stockfeed, horticultural and even buffalo. The information was presented in the final TraNSIT agricultural report, released last week. BALLET SENSATION MAKES THE CUT BY MARGARET MACCOLL At just 13 years of age, junior ballet sensation Scarlett O’Rielley has her life mapped out beginning with moving to Melbourne next year to take up a coveted place at The Australian Ballet School. “It’s my dream to become a dancer, and for me to get into the Australian Ballet School it was making it a reality,” she said. “I was very overwhelmed and excited at the opportunity.” Scarlett auditioned in 2015 for the school’s interstate program, and gained access to classes in Melbourne on a parttime basis. Scarlett auditioned again last August and recently received a letter of acceptance to their full-time program which involves moving into the boarding home for dances and splitting her days between dance classes and school. Scarlett said the move away from home was “a little scary” but the boarding home looked “amazing” and was a place she felt very comfortable. The Dance Centre Peregian Springs principal Deborah Preece-Brocksom said it would be sad to farewell Scarlett after nine years at the school, but she had worked so hard and deserved her place among the best ballet dancers in the country at the Australian Ballet School.
Good Shepherd students performed their Christmas concert last week. Scarlett O'Rielley, centre, with cast members from The Tales of Beatrix Potter ballet. Scarlett will play the lead role, Beatrix Potter, in the centre’s 2017 concert. Miss Deborah said The Tales of Beatrix Potter was a delightful ballet for all ages and included many much-loved characters. The concert will be held at Matthew Flinders Performing Arts Centre on Sunday 3 December at 4pm. ●

CHRISTMAS TRULY COMES ALIVE BY HOLLIE HARRIS The spirit of Christmas arrived early at Good Shepherd Lutheran College last Thursday, when students from Prep to Year 5 put on their end-of-year Christmas concert in front of a captivated audience of more than 1000 family and friends. The audience were given a magical train ride aboard The Christmas Express, and
with the aid of their cheeky conductor, their mission was to help a group of children who had forgotten the real meaning of Christmas find their way to believe again. At each stop along the way, the children helped their passengers rekindle their belief, and by their final destination, they were once again able to believe in the true meaning of Christmas. ●

HALL REBUILD NEARS COMPLETION BY MARGARET MACCOLL Cooroy’s memorial hall rebuild is structurally sound and well ahead of schedule, with the association hoping for a Christmas completion. Cooroy Memorial Hall Association building supervisor Phil McGrath said their builder, Harry Kirk, and volunteers had been over every inch of the building to ensure it was sound. “The hall’s sub-floor has been packed and supported, and every antcap inspected and fixed,” he said. “We had to crawl over a lot of broken glass under the building. Mr McGrath said the flat-pitched roof over the hall’s dining annexe had also been removed, and would be replaced with a new, insulated zincalume roof, while new gyprock would soon be laid over the existing ceiling. Noosa Council has offered to engage consultants to look at ways of improving the hall’s ventilation, so it was not too hot in summer, he said. Inside the hall, work is progressing on a new kitchen and toilet facilities. Vinyl flooring, including slip-resistant vinyl for the kitchen, has been chosen and will soon be laid. Donations or volunteers to assist completion of the work are welcomed,
Cooroy Memorial Hall. and council is matching donations and voluntary work dollar for dollar. Bookings for the hall are not yet open, but the committee is happy to receive expressions of interest from people and organisations interested in using the hall in 2018. NOONAN CONCERT SHOWCASES YOUNG TALENT The Eumundi School of Rock, created by award-winning songstress Katie Noonan, will celebrate the end of their three-month program with a concert on Sunday 3 December. The night will include performances by Katie Noonan and Abby Dobson (formerly of Leonardo’s Bride) as well as showcasing 20 young musicians from Years 3 to 8 who have been musically trained and mentored in a range of musical disciplines from drums to bass, keys, brass, guitar and vocals. All artists performing at the end-of-year concert will be performing for free, with the profits going directly towards keeping the program free for the community in 2018. This year’s event will also feature a mini documentary screening, showcasing the program. The School Of Rock Program exists to give local kids scholarships for mentoring by some of Australia’s best musicians. This year’s tutoring team includes bassist/ trumpeter Owen Newcomb, guitarist/ vocalist Shannon Sol Carroll, drummer Alice Jones, vocalist Clint Francis, pianist Andrew Szumowski and National Jazz Award-winning Saxophonist, Zac Hurren. Katie Noonan said while the many benefits of music education had been well documented, it had been beautiful to see this in action - “happy kids with increased self-confidence and self-awareness who sound seriously RAD and rocking to boot”.

PATTEN PUSH FOR BRISTOW BARROW BY MARGARET MACCOLL The Reason Party’s Victorian MP Fiona Patten was in Noosa supporting local candidate Robin Bristow after last week taking part in the marathon effort to push through the Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill that she initiated in May. Fiona said it needed an Independent Member to put forward the motion for the Bill as “a party wouldn’t have done it”. The bill was decided after 61 hours of debate over several days on a conscience vote and passed, with amendments, 22-18 votes in the Upper House. Because amendments to the bill were agreed, it returns this week to the Lower House for ratification before becoming law. Once passed, it will give patients suffering intolerable pain the right to choose a doctor-assisted death from 2019. Fiona said personal experiences affected people’s decision, but she’d like to think it was the 75-80 per cent of people surveyed to be in favour of it that made a difference. “For the premier, I think it was the death of his father. He said it would have given his father greater peace of mind,” she said. Fiona said she hoped other states would follow Victoria and might take advantage of the study done on the issue through the Parliamentary Inquiry.
RURAL FIRE SERVICE BOOSTED BY RECRUITS About 20 new Rural Fire Service firefighter recruits were officially welcomed during a presentation ceremony on Sunday. Many of the new recruits signed up after witnessing the Coolum and Caloundra bushfires earlier this year, and the intake was one of the largest seen on the Coast for the Rural Fire Service in recent times. The new recruits will be spread across the Coast, including at Noosa North Shore. There was also a special presentation made to Noosa North Shore Rural Fire Brigade First Officer Michael Hancock, whose home burnt down on 19 August when a large blaze kicked off. ●

More than 224,000 people have signed petitions from multiple organisations calling for the end of deforestation in Queensland, the single greatest animal welfare crisis in the state. Wildlife and conservation organisations including the RSPCA are calling on the next Queensland Parliament to end the horrible slaughter of millions of native wildlife that die every year from deforestation. RSPCA Queensland spokesperson Michael Beatty said four years ago RSPCA Queensland’s Wildlife Hospital
was dealing with about 8500 native animals and birds per annum. It now deals with close to 23,000. Deforestation and tree-clearing kills 45 million native animals every year, including koalas Australia is now the second worst country for species loss, according to a recent study published in Nature. Petitions have been set up by WWF Australia, The Wilderness Society and Rainforest Rescue. ●
BLACK SPOTS TARGETED Wide Bay MP Llew O’Brien said new mobile towers or upgrades are scheduled next year for Boreen Point, Cootharaba Road and Pomona Kin Kin Road as part of the government’s Mobile Black Spot Program. FIRST PAST THE POST What a shemozzle this election has been! The Queensland style of election is an insult to the principles of democracy. So confusing. The politicians - from the premier down - were confused. The commentators on all channels on Saturday night tried to hide their confusion behind ‘clever’ kerfuffle. By the end of the night the electoral commission took the cake and stopped counting in confusion. The voters are to be forgiven for their confusion - they have been misled before. So let’s burn all the ballot papers and start afresh: one voter - one vote. First across the line wins. Simple. Joe Konrad, Peregian.
LENSCAPE
JUST IDIOTIC My question is not rhetorical. Whose idiotic decision was it to grant permission for road repairs/upgrades on Gympie Terrace/Gibson Road/Eumundi Road to be carried out in the middle of the night? For 10 nights, local residents have been tormented by unacceptable noise from jackhammers and heavy equipment. If roads can be closed for sporting events, why was it not possible for roads to be closed, allowing these roadworks to be completed during the day? As I said - an idiotic decision and totally unacceptable. Name withheld, Noosaville.
KILL 'EM YOUNG This afternoon, while walking through Pinn-
Eric McCarthy took this beautiful shot of one of the Noosa River locals. If you would like to send in your lifestyle or wildlife photos, email newsdesk@ noosatoday.com.au aroo Park, my wife and I saw swarms of tiny toads. It would be good if council could take action to eliminate these baby cane toads before they grow and become a menace to the area.

HIT IT ON THE HEAD An article with Barry Cotterell’s overview of Noosa Heads Surf Club’s push to relocate the
Peregian surf club has well and truly hit the nail on the head in every respect regarding Noosa Surf Club’s total disregard for what is required in our village. Noosa Surf Club’s questionnaire was so slanted to get the response they wanted, it counts for nothing because they deliberately left out the question to ask the community if they wanted to have the new building on the current site because that’s not what Noosa Surf Club want to do. They just want to hear what they want to do. The current site has served the community well for the past 40 years and will continue to be adequate for another 40 years plus. Noosa Surf Club is saying that they need to put the club in this new location because they need a ‘view to safety’. Since when are lifesaving duties carried out on the deck of a building? They are carried out at the lifesaving tower which is located on the dunes with ocean views and good beach access. Then there’s the skate bowl issue where they want to build the new surf club. Parents can take comfort in knowing that their children are playing there in a safe environment. Move that skate bowl somewhere else and it could be a different story. No matter which way Noosa Surf Club spins this, it’s all about wanting a water view and not building on the existing site and having a park view. Be wary Peregian residents because Noosa Surf Club is well and truly trying to get what they want. M. and S. Barnes, Peregian Beach.
A HAND TO WRAP, PACK AND DELIVER The Sunshine Coast Basket Brigade is packing, wrapping and delivering food hampers and presents to hundreds of families on the Sunshine Coast this Christmas, but need some help to do it. “We had a great time last year preparing 200 hampers,” volunteer co-ordinator Petra Westphal said. “It’s a fun and rewarding day. Being surrounded by like-minded people and being able to do something special for a family who is doing it tough this year is an amazing feeling.” This year the Sunshine Coast Basket Brigade have committed to delivering 300 hampers. “It’s a big undertaking, and we need some
more support to deliver everything on time,” she said. If you have time on 9 December, registration starts from 8.30am at the Noosa District State High School, Tulip Street, Cooroy, to help wrap, pack and deliver presents (you can choose to do all or some of these tasks). We would love to hear from you. To register, you can go straight to our link https://goo.gl/ forms/mky9L0nAMCoR1NSr1 or you can send Petra an email at sunshinecoastbasketbrigade@ magicmoments.org.au and she’ll get the information to you. ●

POPULARITY OF NOOSAVILLE BY JACOB MAY, BASE REALTORS YOU only have to walk down Gympie Terrace on any given afternoon to see how popular Noosaville has become. Lined along the foreshore are groups of locals and visitors enjoying a glass of wine or beer as the sun goes down. Noosaville is the location for those who are looking to live a life of convenience in a picturesque environment. With easy access to Gympie Terrace and the Noosa River foreshore, Noosaville has the appeal that is attracting more and more interstate buyers and retirees. What we are seeing is the increase in townhouse living that is attracting baby boomers looking for a practical lifestyle. To put this into perspective, 1/12 Albert Street, which is going to auction on 10 December, is attracting a huge amount of traffic and has had more than 70 groups through in only a couple of short weeks. The demand is still there for this type of living, and it does not look like it will be slowing down any time soon. With the market slowing in Sydney and Melbourne and people selling their homes for large sums, they are looking for a place to live where they can purchase outright, have money in the bank and live a life focused on lifestyle rather than career. Alongside townhouses there is an abundance of apartments and resort-style living complexes that can be attractive to investors. The lifeblood to this type of investment is tourism. Tourism in Noosaville is strong and is proven by the range of restaurants and bars that run along Gympie Terrace. People don’t just come to Noosa to stay close to Hastings Street anymore; there is a lot more on offer in Noosaville these days and when it comes to heading

INTEREST RATES TIPPED TO HOLD With positive labour market developments and the expected expansion of the economy at a solid pace over the next couple of years, among a range of other factors, the Reserve Bank of Australia has signalled interest rates could stay low. The RBA’s quarterly Statement on Monetary Policy predicts core inflation will stay below its two per cent to three per cent target next year and will not exceed the bottom of the range in 2019. At its recent meetings the Reserve Bank Board judged holding the cash rate at its current level of 1.5 per cent would be consistent with sustainable growth in the economy and achieving the mediumterm inflation target. ●

AFFORDABLE HOUSING PLEA PEAK bodies representing Queensland’s property and social service sectors have called on the incoming government to commit to boosting the supply of social and affordability housing across the state. Property prices in the Noosa Local Government Area are among the highest in the state, and with the rental market remaining tight, tenants face high prices with few rental properties at their disposal. To put downward pressure on housing stress, the Queensland Council of Social Service (QCOSS) and the Property Council of Australia are challenging political leaders to sign up to deliver 38,000 new affordable dwellings and 15,000
new social housing dwellings throughout Queensland during the next decade. The affordable housing target equates to 10 per cent of the total number of dwellings that the Queensland Government’s Housing Strategy estimates will be required to accommodate population growth over the next 10 years. QCOSS chief executive officer, Mark Henley, said 47.6 per cent of Queensland’s low-income households were experiencing housing stress. “Low-income households in South East Queensland and most major regional areas are spending more than 30 per cent of their income to afford the average rental property, and that is not sustainable,” Mr
Henley said. “Housing is a core human right, and is critical to the social and economic participation of all members of our community. “It is critical that the state take action to improve the affordability and accessibility of housing in Queensland.” “Setting a target to deliver 3800 new affordable dwellings and 1500 new social housing dwellings every year for a decade is a necessary first step for policy makers to make a meaningful impact on this problem.” Property Council Queensland executive director, Chris Mountford, said nongovernment organisations and the private
sector could work together to make a positive impact on housing affordability and accessibility. “There’s no silver bullet to the complex issue of housing affordability, which means it is often put in the government too-hard basket,” Mr Mountford said. “Ultimately, the solution lies in basic economics; we need to match supply with increasing demand for housing.” Noosa councillor Ingrid Jackson recently told Noosa Today the provision of affordable housing must be a key consideration for Noosa’s next town planning scheme. ●
SHIRE ESTATE AGENTS SHINE BY TESSA MAPSTONE NOOSA shire real estate agents have been marked out among the top performers in the state as the Real Estate Institute of Queensland released its finalists in the 2018 annual Awards For Excellence. For Cooroy’s Countryside Realty, one of the town’s longest-running agencies started by Robyn Kildey and her business partner 15 years ago, becoming finalist in the Small Residential Agency of the Year category was a thrill. “We are, of course, absolutely delighted to be recognised for all the hard work that we do for our clients,” Ms Kildey said. “As always, our primary focus is servicing the local area that we live and work in, we believe that the coverage we will achieve having been nominated for such a prestigious award will only help to strengthen the community that we all aspire to build and develop.
“With our agency receiving so much attention, naturally so does the area we service, driving more people to the hinterland buying real estate and also for tourism or leisure.” Also shortlisted in the awards was Laguna Real Estate Noosa, with a presence in three categories including Large Residential Agency of the Year, Community Service Award and Residential Property Manager of the Year for Kellie Drinnan. The winners will be revealed at the awards ceremony in Brisbane in March. ●
The team from Realty were thrilled to be named finalists in the REIQ Awards for Excellence.

FOCUS ON … Christmas in Cooroy
OH CHRISTMAS TREE! Cooroy’s Christmas decorations are something to behold. There are decorations on the roundabout, rooftops, street poles and of course the magnificent Cooroy Christmas tree. They are lovely to look during the day and at night. It’s hard not to get in the Christmas spirit when you visit the town. The town officially turns on the lights on Friday 1 December, starting at 6.45pm. The Four Corners Quartet, made up of four talented youngsters will be performing Christmas songs to welcome people to town. The centrepiece to the town’s decorations, the Studio Steel Christmas tree is lit up about 7pm. Each year a local child who has experienced some difficulty in the year is chosen to do the official job of switching on the lights on the magnificent tree. This year it is Grade 6 student Anjali, who had a stroke earlier in the year. Anjali has been recovering well over many months and her role in the Christmas celebrations has encouraged her rehabilitation further as she’s set herself a goal to be able to walk on the evening. There is also a weather forecast of 100 per cent chance of snow, so it looks like Cooroy will have a brief white Christmas on the night! There is something about twinkling lights and snowflakes gently drifting to the ground that creates a sense of wonder and the smiles on everyone’s face is
a beautiful sight to see. Lots of places decorate for Christmas but the thing that makes the Cooroy decorations extra special is that they are all done by community volunteers and are funded by 10 local businesses: Cooroy Chamber of Commerce Inc, Cooroy Pest Control, Cooroy Community Bank Branch of Bendigo Bank, Cooroy Supa IGA, Cooroy RSL, LiveLife Pharmacy Cooroy, Hinternoosa Real Estate, Sunshine Mitre 10, Studio Steel and Action Traffic! There are also 23 businesses that have decorated their windows for the QMP Shop
Some of the wonderful volunteers who make Christmas in Cooroy possible. Window Trail which delights both young and old alike. Plus you can vote for your favourite window throughout December for a chance to win a $100 Cooroy Supa IGA voucher. There were approximately 30 volunteer Christmas elves who spent their Saturday morning decorating Cooroy with lights, tinsel, garland and baubles. They were treated to coffee and cake to give them
energy throughout the morning, thanks to Richies Bakery and Fox and Hound Espresso. Noosa Care Inc sponsored volunteer shirts for them and others who are volunteering for Christmas in Cooroy which they all wear with pride. If you see someone wearing a Christmas in Cooroy shirt around town, thank them for their efforts that keeps the community spirit of Christmas alive in Cooroy ●

NOOSA TODAY 29
FOCUS ON … Christmas in Cooroy
PARADE USHERS FESTIVE FUN The Christmas in Cooroy festival firmly marks the start of the festive season in Noosa, and one of the main attractions is the Bendigo Bank Street Parade. The theme for this year is ‘Stories, Books and Authors” and the some of the organising committee got together with Geoff Edwards of Cooroy Community Bank Branch of Bendigo Bank to try out a few costume ideas. Each year, around 30 community groups and businesses come together to produce a huge array of decorated floats with costumes galore. “The Bendigo Bank Street Parade is truly spectacular, and over 10,000 people line the street to catch all the fun. There are always lots of giveaways and lollies handed out to the crowds, and people of all ages are just amazed at how great the floats look. “A lot of people don’t realise that everything at Christmas in Cooroy is free including rides, face painting, Santa visit, entertainment and more. That just couldn’t happen without fantastic sponsors like Cooroy Community Bank Branch of Bendigo Bank,” event manager Danielle Taylor said. Cooroy Community Bank Branch of Bendigo Bank have sponsored the event for 10 years, and they always eagerly participate in the parade. “We are always pleased to be involved with Christmas in Cooroy as it’s so much fun and it really showcases Cooroy’s
amazing community spirit. Volunteers, community groups and businesses all work together to produce something quite special. The event has a wonderful community atmosphere, too, which is why we have supported the event for the last 10 years,” Cooroy Community Bank branch manager, Geoff Edwards said. Cooroy loves a reason to dress up, so much so that often the crowd gets in the spirit too also turning up in costume. This really is a parade not to miss, and the rest of the Christmas in Cooroy festival is just as special so definitely get down there and grab a space to see all the fun of the parade this Saturday! The Bendigo Bank Street Parade starts at 5pm, but the main street of Cooroy, Maple Street is closed from 4pm, so it pays to get there early, get a car park and find a position along Maple Street to watch all the action. That way you’ll also get to see the madcap fun of the Noosa to Hinterland
Fun for all ages, the Bendigo Bank Street Parade is a family favourite. Great Santa Race where about 50 Santa suitclad runners race up Maple Street to raise funds for the Leukaemia Foundation.

FOCUS ON … Christmas in Cooroy
CHRISTMAS THAT GIVES BACK Christmas in Cooroy is unique in so many ways and one of those ways is the myriad of ways that it gives back to the community. We aren’t just talking about the fact that it’s a free event which is a great gift to the community thanks to all the sponsors and volunteers, but also that it gives back in many other ways too. The Noosa to Hinterland Plumbing Group is a big fund-raiser for the Leukaemia Foundation with a couple of thousand dollars raised each year. This year the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce decided to purchase the orange bollards that are needed for the street closure. These bollards have been increasingly difficult to source over past years and so the chamber decided to purchase them this year rather than hire them each year. But they also thought it was a bit of a shame for them to sit in storage for 12 months so they approached Cooroy SES to see if they had use for them throughout the year for traffic closures and other events. SES will also store the bollards so they’d have easy access when they needed them. It’s a win all around and a great example of how this event gives back! Christmas in Cooroy is also a fund-raiser for many community groups like Rotary Club of Cooroy and Cooroy Pomona Lions Club that have food stalls. Other community groups and businesses gain valuable exposure by having a float in

The event also supports community groups like Noosa District Pipe Band and Cooroy SES with donations for their volunteer efforts at the event. It also has economic return to local businesses. The decorations also bring lots of people into town throughout the festive season that shop locally to buy Christmas gifts for under their trees and food for their Christmas table. Last but not least, is the community spirit
that this event generates. It is absolutely joyous to see the smiles on faces, the pride that volunteers take in the event and the way that the whole community pulls together to produce something spectacularly special and just typical of Cooroy’s abundant community spirit. ●

TAKE A GAMBLE
ON MIA BY HOLLIE HARRIS
Award-winning Australian singersongwriter Mia Dyson is thrilled to unveil her new single 'Gambling’. She's announced an Australian headline tour in support of the new track, with a string of dates around the country including a gig in The Brewery at The Imperial Hotel Eumundi on Saturday 9 December. ’Gambling’ is the first taste of her brandnew album, due out early 2018. “The thought of choosing to be noosatoday.com.au
vulnerable is scary before I act on it. And, being vulnerable is the most fulfilling way I have found to live. ’Gambling’ is a reminder that this moment is the chance to either live life on life’s terms; or to let the chance for an experience slip away in positive or negative fantasy," says Dyson of the new single. In January 2017, Mia headed to legendary music mecca Muscle Shoals, AL to record a new album with Ben Tanner (Alabama Shakes, St Paul and The Broken Bones) behind the controls. Joining her in the studio was longtime drummer Erin
“Syd" Sidney, original 'Swamper,’ David Hood on bass, and John Paul White (The Civil Wars) on background vocals. Dyson, who currently resides in Los Angeles, will return to Australia this November for an extensive run of shows along the East Coast in addition to her festival performances at Inland Sea Of Sound Festival, Bitter and Twisted Festival, SS&A and Queenscliff Music Festival. Mia Dyson has toured with the likes of Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt and many more. A multiple ARIA and APRA award-winning
artist, Dyson was recently named one of Australia’s top 25 guitarists of all time. Her albums have been widely praised. The Moment received four stars in Rolling Stone Australia, while Idyllwild was hailed as “brilliant" by Daytrotter, and debuted in the CMJ top 100 in the US. Mia also scored a win as Double J Radio’s “Artist of the Year”. TICKETS: Pre-sale $25 (plus booking fee) through Oztix or at the Imperial Hotel (phone: 5442 8811). $35 at the door 4pm on the day. $15 at the door. Doors open 7.30pm. ●

The Man Who Invented Christmas Cast: Dan Stevens, Christopher Plummer, Jonathan Pryce, Miriam Margolyes
The Christmas Fix, by Lucy Score
Rose, by Jessie J
When a late season hurricane hits Merry, Connecticut, city manager and single dad Noah Yates has to inform the already devastated residents that there won’t be a Christmas Festival this year. No festival means no tourism dollars. A disaster of epic proportions for his hometown. But when home renovation expert slash smoking hot reality TV star Catalina King shows up with a camera crew and a budget big enough to put the town back together again, Noah balks. Hard. The last time Cat was in town she stirred up trouble everywhere she went. Cat is ready and willing to put Merry back in Christmas mode with a holiday special that will leave everyone believing in miracles.
Jessie J has announced details of her new album. The singer’s fourth studio album is called R.O.S.E, which she revealed in a video on her official website is named after her mum. “My mother is called Rose, she gave me the gift of life. A rose is at its most beautiful when budding." I rose above the pain. R.O.S.E is Jessie J’s fourth album and arrives three years after 2014’s Sweet Talker, which peaked at number five on the Official Albums Chart. All three of the star’s albums have reached the Top 10 in the UK, while she also has three number one singles to her name, including Price Tag, which was the fourth biggest selling single of 2011.
Whimsical, slightly melodramatic and Dickensian, The Man Who Invented Christmas is one of those little Christmas treats at the bottom of your stocking - hard to find but worth the wait after you’ve opened the bigger flashier presents first. Based on Les Standiford’s book of the same name, this is the story of how Charles Dickens (played by a delightfully manic Dan Stevens) revived the interest in Christmas in the 1800s by self-publishing his novel A Christmas Carol. It’s a production that captures both the real world and the world of Dickens’ characters with Ebenezer Scrooge (Christopher Plummer) joining him on most of his journey.

SUPER-SIMPLE MEXICAN CHICKEN PIES
These pies can be made ahead. Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two days or in the freezer for up to two months. Reheat in a 180 degree Celsius (160C fan forced oven) for 15-20 minutes or until crisp and warmed through. INGREDIENTS 200g roast chicken, chopped. 425g can Old El Paso Mexe Beans, rinsed, drained.
60g roasted red capsicum, cut into thin strips. 2 tablespoons chopped fresh coriander. 3 green shallots, chopped. 100g grated 4 cheese melt. 485g packet Old El Paso Fajita Kit. 60ml (1/4 cup) vegetable oil. 2 tomatoes, cut into wedges. 1 avocado, cut into wedges. Sour cream, to serve (optional). METHOD 1. Place chicken, beans, capsicum, coriander, green shallot, half the cheese, two tablespoons mild Mexican salsa and a tablespoon of fajita spice mix in a bowl. Stir to combine. Divide mixture into eight portions. 2. Heat two tortillas in the microwave on high for 20 seconds to soften. Place a portion of
chicken mixture in the centre of each tortilla. Carefully fold edges in, overlapping to enclose filling. Press down gently to seal and flatten. Place, folded side down, on a tray. Repeat with remaining tortillas and filling. 3. Heat the oil in a non-stick frying pan. Working in batches, cook the pies, seam side down for a minute and then turn and cook for a further minute or until lightly browned and crisp. Drain on paper towel. 4. Preheat the oven grill on high. Place the cooked pies on a baking tray. Top with the remaining cheese. Cook under the grill for 1-2 minutes or until the pies are golden and cheese is melted. Serve with tomato, avocado, the remaining salsa and sour cream, if you like.

TRY THIS … Stress-free Christmas
ENJOY A BUDGET CHRISTMAS December tends to put a lot of pressure on family budgets. Is it possible to get through the silly season and actually save money this year? Uniting Care Queensland Child and Family Services has released its list of financial tips to help families keep debt under control this holiday season. UCQ Statewide Manager Financial Resilience and Wellbeing Service Jodie Logovik said feeling the pinch at Christmas time was not uncommon. “We always say, try to keep in mind that Christmas is just one day of the year and it’s about sharing time with family and friends, not feeling pressured into buying lots of things. “There are several strategies people can employ this Christmas season to keep their spending in check and some great steps on how to still enjoy the festive season without taking on additional debt,” she said. “You don’t have to buy someone a gift, make them a voucher for babysitting, mowing the lawn or washing the car instead - gifting your time can be more valuable than purchasing an unwanted gift. “Setting up a Secret Santa within the family and buying non-perishable food items early will all contribute to creating savings at Christmas time but most importantly budgeting early will result in the biggest cost saving during what is a very expensive time of year,” Ms Logovik said. UCQ Child and Family Services
THREE … Debt help strategies You are not alone - debt and financial hardship happens to people from all walks of life and there are many situations outside of our control such as job loss, sickness or relationship breakdowns that can quickly impact finances. UCQ Child and Family Services Strategies to help with Debt:
Financial Tips for Christmas: · Think forward to February and how it feels to have not added to existing credit card debt. · Remember, Christmas is about sharing time with family and friends, not gift giving. · Plan ahead and early - creating a budget and following it will bring the greatest reduction in financial costs this Christmas. · Consider starting a money plan and saving a small amount each week for next Christmas. · Make a list of all the people you intend to buy gifts for and allocate what you can afford to spend on each as well as listing costs for food, travel and other expenses. · Set up Secret Santa wherever possible or
combine with others to purchase gifts, this will reduce the number of gifts you have to give. · Give the gift of time - make a voucher to babysit, wash the car or mow the lawn. · Set aside an amount for Christmas lunch and then ask all family members to bring a plate of food to share. · Pay an extra $5 or $10 per week on your rent throughout the year, that way when Christmas comes around you are a week in advance and can use the extra rent money for presents. Call Queensland’s National Debt Helpline on 1800 007 007 and speak to a UCQ Child and Family Services financial counsellor or make an appointment for a face to face meeting if you need advice about your financial situation. ●
1
Start by acknowledging that the debt exists and then create a plan to work towards paying it off. Be kind to yourself and remember it took time to grow the debt, it will take time to pay it off.
2
Cancel your credit card redraw facility and ask to be switched to a low rate card.
3
Put your hand up early for help, call 1800 007 007 and speak with a financial counsellor at UCQ who can look at your financial situation and assist you with strategies to get back on track.

ALL YOUR HEALTH CARE NEEDS
MAGIC VEGGIE'S AN ALL-ROUNDER BY HOLLIE HARRIS Here are some of the reasons you should make sweet potato a regular staple in your diet. Beauty food In addition to vitamins A and C, sweet potato also contains vitamin E, which is excellent for the health of your skin. It can improve your complexion for flawless skin. Cures dry and cracked heels If you have dry and cracked heels, use the water in which you have boiled sweet potatoes to soak your feet while it is still warm. This helps in curing cracked heels. Heals dark eye circles and eye puffiness Take two slices of sweet potato and keep them over your eyes. This can help in removing dark circles, wrinkles and puffiness of the eyes. Maintains the elasticity of your skin Vitamin C is found in high quantities in sweet potatoes. This is great for the production of collagen, which can help in maintaining the elasticity of your skin. Boosts immune system
Vitamin C present in sweet potato has antioxidant properties, which make it great for improving your immune system. As a result, you suffer less from common cold, cough, flu, and other diseases. Good source of iron If you are anaemic or your body becomes deficient in iron, sweet potato is rich in iron and increases the production of red blood cells, thus preventing anaemia. It can also improve the resistance power and immunity power of the body, and reduce stress. Promotes metabolism and treats premenstrual symptoms Sweet potatoes contain manganese, which is great for improving metabolism and maintaining a healthy balance of the blood sugar levels in the body. It is also good for suppressing your appetite, thereby preventing you from overeating. As a result, you can lose weight by including this vegetable in your regular diet. It is good for anaemia and for treating severe premenstrual symptoms as well. ●
THREE … Ways to supercharge your eating Snacking on a handful of berries or including a piece of broccoli with dinner may provide you with a range of antioxidants, but it’s not going to provide everything you need for optimal health. Instead of focusing on superfoods, eat a range of wholefoods. Stock up on:
1
Grains - Linseeds contain three heart friendly nutrients and Oats contain large amounts of the soluble fibre beta-glucan, making it heart friendly and improving bowel health.
2
Fresh superfoods - Broccoli has a bounty of health-promoting properties, adding tomatoes to your pasta sauce is a great way to boost your antioxidant intake and blueberries help protect memory and cognition.
3
Asian style - Salmon is a great source of omega-3 fats and protein, as well as a source of vitamin D; ginger helps protect against cancer, particularly bowel cancer, as well as boosting immune function and green tea has shown to improve blood flow and lower cholesterol. noosatoday.com.au

NOOSA TODAY 43
AROUND THE GROUNDS
A TOUCH OF FINALS’ ACTION BY RON LANE The weather was kind for the Junior Touch Football summer season finals. A warm and sunny afternoon led to an afternoon of top notch junior action. The Under 10s began the proceedings with Ball Girls and Piranhas entertaining in a tight tussle. With many of the Ball Girls playing in their first season they showed great determination in pushing the more experienced Piranhas for the entire match. The Piranhas held on to take the result by a couple of touchdowns. Fast and Furious lived up to their name against the Touch Nuts, showing their attacking flair. Touch Nuts never gave up and will be back bigger and better next year. The final between the Colour Bombs (girls) and Pirates (boys) turned into an absolute heart stopper. After an outstanding match with end to end action, the score was dead locked at the full-time siren sending the game into a dreaded drop-off to determine the winner. Most of these young players had never seen a drop-off before let alone participated in one and all the players should be proud of how they played. The Colour Bombs had first use of the Steeden and scored a team touchdown in the corner in the first set of six. The Pirates had one set to level the score, but the girls successfully held them
Touchdown. out to take the honours. Player of the Season - judged for the right attitude towards team mates, opposition and officials - went to Lily Geary and Atticus Richter. The Under 12 division saw two finals played, both at great pace and with great skill on show by all teams and players. The ‘A’ final saw the Daredevil girls against the Noosaville boys. This match was touchdown for touchdown for most of the match with Noosaville holding on to take the trophy by a couple of touchdowns in the end. In a game that was affected by the lack of player availability the Banana Splits had a tough match up against a combined team of Mad Dogs and Diamonds. Whilst the Mad Dog/Diamonds combination proved to be successful on the day, which was impressive from these players for working together for the first time, Banana Splits were named the winners. Dakota Pohlner and Josh Palmer were recipients for the Player of the Season.

A spectacularly successful 2017 year has seen Coolum Croquet Club win two out of the five Sunshine Coast Croquet Pennants and runners-up in a third. Club players won the Nell Hass Shield for ricochet, making this eight wins in 13 years. Coolum also won the Bray Shield for Division 3/4 Association players - this was the fourth win in six years. Coolum were runners-up in the Golf Shield, their best golf croquet result since 2012. Well done to all 17 players who participated in the winning teams. Coolum players also competed in the Lockwood Shield for Association players and the Golf Pennant. These results are excellent given that they are one of the smallest clubs on the Sunshine Coast with only 34 playing members. In March, member Wade Hart, placed second in the Southport Shield (Association Croquet). Coolum also had two first ever wins in the 26year history of the club - Coolum Club Captain George Oliver, teamed with Wade Hart to win the Croquet Queensland 2017 State Ricochet Doubles at Nambour. Heather Smith became the first female player this century, to win the prestigious “Golden Oldies” event at Headland-Buderim Croquet Club. This is a handicap event for men and women Association croquet players over the age of 65. In May, George and Wade were also successful

In June, George Oliver won The Nell Hass Memorial Pre-Drawn Swiss Event for Association players, an open competition held at Headland-Buderim Croquet Club. ● noosatoday.com.au
LIFE OF BRINE
PHIL JARRATT
Streets original Corrimal factory.
I HEAR THAT TRAIN A’COMIN’ BY PHIL JARRATT
When you read this I will have just completed one of the great train journeys of the world, on the luxurious Indian Pacific from Perth to Sydney, a three-and-a-half day marathon across the harsh country of the western wheatfields and the Nullabor Plain. But right now I’m in a hotel in Perth, about to board in an hour. Not that I’ll be doing it tough, as I have on previous journeys across this stark landscape. I’ll be watching it roll by from the air-conditioned lounge of Australia’s best tourist train, in between gourmet meals paired with the wine of the land. But none of this has happened yet, so we’ll get back to the future next week. For now let’s focus on current realities, which include (as I write) the strong likelihood that Sandy Bolton will become the independent member for Noosa. While I couldn’t support Sandy for mayor against Tony Wellington, her campaign then, and now, showed a lot of common sense and a feisty spirit with Noosa’s best interests at heart. She’s a can-do gal and I’m sure she’ll make a great representative for us, with considerable clout on the cross benches in a precarious parliament. Regardless of your political persuasion, I think it’s important to recognize the contributions of a good local member, some one who walks the walk while talking the talk. And in my experience Glen Elmes was just that, a good man who worked tirelessly for his community and with distinction as a minister. I don’t know if he’ll draw the curtains on politics, maybe a reprise of his great career in radio beckons? But whatever is next, Glen, thanks for your support and for your hard work over many years.

Crossing the Nullabor on the Indi
Go Sally, go! The women’s world title decider is on this week at Honolua Bay on Maui, and as much as I’m a huge Tyler Wright fan, I’m hoping this is Sally Fitzgibbons’ year. Sal’s been such a great ambassador for women’s surfing, and is such a great competitor that it feel like it’s got to be her time. But in order to win, she has to perform really well and hope that Courtney Conlogue and Tyler Wright can be held at bay. Sally comes into the event in first place on the Jeep Leaderboard after a season of consistently good results, reaching the quarterfinals or better at every event and winning the second stop on tour, the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro. The 26-year-old started her CT career with three straight runner-up finishes (2010, 2011, 2012) and is chasing down her maiden WSL title. Sally has made the final once in Maui in 2015 and needs a win this year to be sure of clinching the title.
She said pre-event: “I’m feeling super comfortable right now with the Jeep Leader Jersey on my back,” Fitzgibbons said. “Whatever the result, it’s a great feeling to know that I put myself in this position by elevating my surfing. To have the title on the line here and be in the company of these contenders is a humbling and amazing experience. Whoever wins will be really deserving.” Summer ice cream disaster averted With summer arriving tomorrow, it is with great relief that I can report here that we seem to have avoided the catastrophic consequences of a summer-long boycott of Street’s Ice Cream. You heard me right. No Magnums, no Gaytimes, no Paddle Pops! That was the very real threat as the AMWU threatened a national ban at the Sydney Street’s plant unless their current enterprise agreement with multi-national Unilever (which owns Street’s) was extended. Fortunately, common sense prevailed

and the ban was lifted. I take this very personally, since I grew up within earshot of the knock-off whistle of the first Street’s factory at Corrimal on the south coast of NSW. We grew up on a diet of banana Paddle Pops and tubs of Street’s vanilla for tea if we were good. Dad was a mate of old Ted Street, who founded the company back in 1924 and started churning ice cream in his back shed, just a few blocks from where my father would set up his business 20 years later. Dad and Old Ted worked together in community groups and for various charities, including the annual Corrimal Parade, in which floats for Street’s Ice Cream were considerably bigger and fancier than the ones for Jarratt Electrics. By the time I came along, Old Ted Street had long since stopped pulling his ice cream cart along the main street behind a one-horse motorbike. Streets had become a mega-brand, but for me it will always be “the cream of the coast”. ●

NOOSA TODAY 45
SPORT TODAY
WEATHER A GIFT FOR BEN BY RON LANE It is now eight years since the first ever Noosa Gift was cancelled because of intense rain. “I will never forget the date,” said a laughing Michelle Smith. “It was the tenth of the tenth 2010 and we even tried mopping the water off the tracks with towels, but nothing worked; it was an absolute mess.” Not so this year; for the Gift which was run at the Girrwween Sports Complex at Noosa on Saturday, the dedicated team work of Noosa Little Athletics officials, was as on previous years dry and well run. One of the officials also responsible for the success was announcer and President of Queensland Athletic League Bruce Duncan. Bruce’s encyclopedic knowledge of all contestants is without doubt a major contribution as it keeps both coaches and spectators fully informed. The major event the Noosa Gift, sponsored by the Noosa Surf Club was won by Ipswich 15-year-old school boy Ben Thomas in a time of 11.31sec. In second place was Jarrod Whittaker and third saw a dead heat between Ben Hayward and Pat McCarthey; for Whittaker it was his second consecutive year of taking the silver medal. “This is absolutely unbelievable,” said Thomas. Running off a handicap of 6.75 metres this 11th grade St Edmonds Ipswich College student is coached by Vic Pascoe also of Ipswich. “I came to Noosa mainly to get a few races and gain more experience,” he said. However earlier in the year he won the Australia Day Gift on the Gold Coast and also following this, he won the Under 16 100 and 200 metres sprints at the Queensland Titles. “This is his first year of serious competition so we will see what happens in the future,” coach Pascoe said. ●

First place winner Ben Thomas, second place Jarrod Whittaker and third place tie between Ben Hayward and Pat McCarthey.
Noosa Gift Primary School Relay winner was Tewantin State School, followed by St Thomas More and Good Shepherd for third place.
KARATE SKILLS ARE DEEP IN THEIR BLOOD BY RON LANE On Friday evening at the South Pacific Resort all members of the Sunshine Coast Martial Arts Karate Budokan International, gathered for the 2017 Karate Awards Dinner. Hosted by Senior Instructor/Director Sensei Bryan Dukas, he acknowledged the fact that with so many parents in attendance it was indeed a good indication as to the strength and success of the club. In his welcome address, Bryan introduced special guests of the evening, parents Michael and Marion Dukas who were visiting from South Africa via Japan. This announcement was well received for apart from being the father of the host, Michael had the very rare distinction of recently being upgraded to the very high level of 8th Dan, by Japanese Senseis during his recent visit to Japan, for the World Shotokan Karate Championships and training seminars. In his response Michael jokingly made reference to his journey from the grade of Black Belt 1st Dan to that of Black Belt 8th Dan. "It is something of which I am naturally very proud but, this rare distinction took no less than 43 years and 2 months," he said. Further to this he added that to his knowledge it was the first time that a father and son had on the same occasion had been 46 NOOSA TODAY

Michael Dukas with son Bryan and wife Marion and daughter-in-law Anita. graded to the upper ranks of 8th Dan and 6th Dan respectively in Japan. Following the presentation of club awards, it was announced that the Budokan International of Noosaville, has been named the Queensland Club of the Year. In a sport in which code of ethics, selfdiscipline, respect for elders and non-violent way of life is strictly adhered to, this is indeed an outstanding achievement. ●
A CENTURY AND A WIN! BY RANDALL WOODLEY NOOSA CRICKET Two of the club’s experienced cricketers, Andrew Kratzmann and Craig Moore steered their teams to victories last Saturday. Kratzmann scored a 100 at Read Park and Craig Moore his 99 at Burpengary. The nailbiting match at Read Park was witnessed by a good crowd with many juniors there to support the team. First Grade: Playing a 50-overs match with a white ball and black sight screens, the team were decked out in their new maroon outfits with personalised numbers. With two of the team’s best players away with the representative Sunshine Coast side, captain Ben Gear won the toss and sent Caloundra into bat. His gamble looked like paying off as Robbie Payton snagged an early wick to have the Lighthouses 1-2. However, their batsman knuckled down and the next wicket did not fall until the 25th over. Being two bowlers short, seven TNT players were called on to bowl and wickets started to fall. Jacob Dennien took three, all caught on the boundary by the reliable hands of Andrew Kartzmann. Then the Caloundra middle and late order batsmen unleashed and put on 116 runs in the last 15 overs to give TNT a formidable target of 263 (8 wickets) to chase. Jarrod Officer took 3/55 and Lachie Gunner picked up the other wicket. TNT opened cautiously with Dennien (19) and Tristan Griffin (16) putting on 30 before a wicket fell. Ben Gear strode to the crease and was soon joined by Andrew Kratzmann. Slowly but surely, these two batsmen chipped away at the target but then Ben was run out for 52 (3/151). Jarrod Officer was next to go after scoring a quick 25. At the end of over 40, TNT still needed another 76 runs to win; at over 45-40 to win and at the beginning of the 49th, 14 runs were needed. Andrew Kratzmann was nearing his ton and the team were eight down. Teenager, Darcy Morgan faced the first ball in the last over and smacked a 4. Next ball he repeated the shot for another four and then a single had him at the other end. He finished on 14 not out. Two balls left with three to get. One ball to be bowled - the scores were tied on 263 and Andrew Kratzmann on 99. The large crowd, swelled by a number of junior cricketers were hushed. Then the ground erupted as Kratzmann scored the winning run and reached his century. What a day, what an innings! Kratzmann - ever humble - was congratulated but commented that it was an all-round team effort with every single player contributing to the great win. ● noosatoday.com.au
BETWEEN THE FLAGS
RON LANE
KEEN LIFESAVERS READY FOR PATROL There were three events on the weekend that indeed makes us feel very confident about the progress and future of lifesaving within our community. Two were at Sunshine Beach club and the third was on Noosa's Main Beach. At Sunshine a bronze squad of 20 members finished their final assessment; they are now qualified to take their place on the club's patrol roster. Club captain Ross James welcomed the new members into the club. “With Christmas season starting this influx of new members couldn’t have come at a better time. All indications are that we are in for a very busy season.” The other good news at Sunshine was that a team of eight qualified for their IRB certificates with some passing their drivers and others their crewies. Sunshine is very open with many kilometers of lonely unpatrolled stretches of beach, well outside the patrolled areas. Add to this the very dangerous and unpatrolled Alexandria Bay just north of Sunshine and the importance of the IRB teams cannot be emphasised enough. With the big seas that constantly roll into the bay, the quality of those who volunteer for the IRB crews (as well as the jet rescue ski crews) must be of the highest standardproud dedicated and above dependable. Our third event which pointing to our future, occurred on Noosa's Main Beach on Sunday morning when some 450 little Under 8s and Under 10 Nippers assembled for a Sunshine Coast carnival. With a small wave that was perfect for the little ones to

This was supported by a large number of adults that turned up to officiate. This was also a learning curve as some were also starting their careers as beach officials. A very big well done to Noosa's JACs chairperson Sam Smith and her team; to run a carnival with so many little people in attendance is no easy task. Regarding our future with so many Nippers (and remember this was only two
age groups) on our books it is now up to us to ensure that a good experienced structure is in place to ensure that we maintain a large percentage of these little people; hopefully they will eventually move up into the senior club. Once again it is time for the big event of surf boat rowing - the Navy George Bass Marathon - the longest and toughest surf boat race in the world; and this year Noosa Heads will be entering a crew. The race is over a distance of 190 klms with an expected

JACK MANGROVE
TROLLING LURES SNARE MANGROVE JACKS We are seeing numerous anglers from amateur to expert landing some fantastic fish this week, with the low light periods proving to be the perfect time to plan a fishing adventure. The highly prized mangrove jacks have started to make their presence felt, with some nice fish taken from between the lakes. Trolling lures along the drop offs and floating baits around structured areas are proving to be a great way to tangle with these hard hitting beasts. The Gympie Terrace stretch of the river as well as the Frying Pan has been producing great numbers of whiting and exceptional bream, with prawns, worms and yabbies’ all popular baits, poppers and surface lures in the 50-70mm range have also been working well with the River2sea Bubble Pops one of the standouts. Woods Bay has again provided anglers with some brilliant trevally catches in the early mornings. Golden trevally, GTs and Queenfish have been reported throughout the river. Best baits to use have been prawns, pilchard and yabbies. When lure fishing try using Strada Virals, 2-3” curly tail grub style plastics and gladiator prawns. Better numbers of mud crabs are showing up now, with a lot of them being caught along the mangrove edges up at the lakes and around the jew hole, on mullet heads and or frames for bait. Off the beach at third cutting toward Teewah, Sunshine and Castaways have been producing good numbers of small dart, noosatoday.com.au
time of seven days. The race starts on Sunday 31 December at Batemans Bay and finishes at Eden on Saturday 6 January 2018. The crew - which is made up of eight rowers - will be under the control of experienced sweep Shane Rodovich. Rodovich has won this race on two occasions while sweeping other clubs. Next week we meet the people involved. This weekend the Noosa boat crews will contest Round 3 Navy series at Kurrawa. Good luck to all. ●

Stann Anderson with a quality offshore jew fish. whiting, flathead and bream. The rocks around Noosa National Park are providing a few snapper on the top of the tide using Z-man 7" Jerk Shad soft plastics and ganged up fresh flesh baits. Offshore has been a bit patchy for reef dwellers such as; snapper, sweetlip and trout, try using the addition of burley which will greatly improving your chances of getting more fish. The pelagic action is starting to improve with the mackerel and
tuna starting to make an appearance, a great technique that has been working well, is trolling a number of different depth lures to see what level of water the fish are sitting at. With the relentless south easterly trade winds over the last week has made it very bumpy for the offshore anglers, so ensure to take care if you are thinking about heading out. So on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures! ●
