By Luke Voogt Former mayor Darryn Lyons has urged the State Government to make Geelong’s floating Christmas tree the world’s biggest after City Hall touted its recent success. “We have to keep building it bigger and better each year,” he said. “It has to become a major event for Victoria, simply because of the amount of money that flows in from across the state and the country.” The tree was fast becoming a Geelong tradition according to a recent online survey by City Hall. About 30 per cent of this year’s crowd of 15,000 attended the previous year’s ceremony, up from 17 per cent in 2015 and 24 per cent in 2016. “I was told there were over 15,000 mobile devices measured,” Mr Lyons said. Elderly and younger attendees without phones would likely have made the number even greater, he explained. The City surveyed 250 people from the crowd online, with 93 per cent saying they would return in 2018. Continued to page 6

Anger as NBN sites ‘giant green boxes’ By Luke Voogt NBN Co marked hundreds of locations for “atrocious” green boxes without consultation this week, angering Geelong residents. East Geelong pensioner Pam McGarigle was furious when she discovered subcontractors marking an area outside her heritage-listed home on Wednesday morning. “I don’t want a giant green plastic object sitting outside my house which is going to attract graffiti and looks atrocious,” she said. The Telecommunications Act allows NBN Co to install fibre to the node cabinets without the consent of the landowner, which is Geelong council. It requires the NBN Co to consult council, but not nearby residents. “Where has our consultation been?” Ms McGarigle said. “I think there are other residences experiencing the same indiscriminating legal vandalism.” She and 520 other people had lodged NBNrelated complaints or inquiries with the office of Corio MP Richard Marles since November 2015, a spokesperson said. Subcontractors marked out a square on Normandy Street for the cabinet, outside her heritage-listed home. The Geelong stonemason James Drew built the house in 1908 and the City of Greater Geelong had recognised it as historically significant. Ms McGarigle approached the subcontrac-

She said another option for the cabinet had been outside a nearby church. “Why does the church carry more weight than me? Our house is heritage listed and the beautification of our street is magnificent.”
Ms McGarigle, who is member of the Australian Labor Party, said she had no intention of connecting to the NBN. “That’s the joke of it,” she said. The node cabinets serviced 250 premises each on average, according NBN Co Victorian manager Russell Kelly. “There are hundreds of nodes constructed or planned in Geelong,” he said. “The vast majority are constructed without incident or comment from nearby residents - in fact people living near a node have faster internet speeds.” The Telecommunications Act requires NBN Co to provide notice of proposed infrastructure activity near the landowner. NBN Co would soon engage with Geelong council to notify it of its intention to install the cabinets in various locations, spokesperson Kasey Ellison said. “This has not occurred yet. “As the rollout of the NBN network in East Geelong is in the preliminary design phase none of the infrastructure locations have been confirmed yet.” Ms Elision said only the City of Greater Geelong could formally object to the final location. “However, as part of our commitment to community consultation, we will drop flyers to local residents as we progress the design work,” she said.
IN BRIEF Boozer busted A female driver who blew five times over the limit on Torquay’s The Esplanade has prompted police to warn motorists about drinking and driving during the festive season. Police said the 34-year-old had her licence suspended and would be summonsed to court after recording a blood-alcohol level of .251 this week.
Kitten con Geelong detectives have arrested convicted fraudster Con Petropolis, 55, at his East Geelong home following allegations of animal mistreatment. Animal welfare officers assessed 32 animals on the property, including four dogs, two cats and 26 kittens.
Healthy result Barwon Health has revealed a “turnaround financial surplus” after finishing $13 million in the red last year. New chief Professor Ruth Salmon said the $1.2 million surplus was “largely due” to the efforts of staff, who had worked “incredibly hard”.
Awards named Geelong Business Excellence Awards has officially welcomed a new naming-rights sponsor, according to the event’s organiser. Geelong Chamber of Commerce said Deakin University had agreed to the “exciting new partnership” after record entries for the 2017 awards.
Crash bail Whittington teen Zachary James Watkins was on bail when he injured a 72-year-old man in a car crash, Geelong Magistrates’ Court has heard. Magistrate Michael Coghlan rejected Mr Watkin’s bail application on Wednesday, ordering the 18-year-old’s return to court at a later date to answer a series of driving, theft and assault charges.
Cats’ loss The Geelong Cats have posted a $446,000 loss for the 2017 financial year despite home-game attendances rising almost 17 per cent. The club blamed the result on a depreciation charge of almost $2 million following the completion of four redevelopment stages at the Kardinia Park stadium.

DOUBLE TAKE
Books in the black By Patrick Laverick The $45 million redevelopment of the Geelong Library and Heritage Centre has paid off, with a huge surge in visitors. The centre averaged 4000 visits a year before the works and on Wednesday it welcomed its 100,000th visitor after opening two years ago. A class from St Mary’s Primary School were the lucky special guests, with the class receiving a surprise present for their school - a collection of children’s history books. The schoolkids were thrilled as CEO Patti Manolis presented the books to them and started to read them straight away. The books included the Big Book of Australian History, Mary’s Australia and a story about Dame Nellie Melba. Geelong Regional Library Chair Councillor Margot Smith said the new centre had encouraged a lot more school groups to visit. “Visitation to the Heritage Centre by primary and secondary school students has increased significantly since the Heritage Centre relocated to its new premises in the Geelong Library and Heritage Centre.” After moving all its records into one place and opening its doors to a wide range of special events, the Heritage Centre has revitalised itself. Last month the centre hosted the Word for Word Festival, a writer’s festival dedicated to nonfiction which attracted some of Australia’s bestknown writers and journalists. This month the centre has turned on the Christmas spirit, hosting a storytime event and Christmas crafts as part of the Central Geelong Christmas Trail. The story time session is on Monday to Saturday, at 2pm until Christmas Day. Staff members at the library are collecting non-perishable items for the Geelong Food Relief Centre through their Food for Fines fundraiser. The library is waiving book fines in exchange for food donations with expiration dates of May 2018 or later.
A group of Sacred Heart College students earned some laughs this week with novel research into the naming of residential streets. The ABC gave widespread coverage of the schoolgirls’ study that tested adult attitudes to “silly” actual street names in Victoria such as Butt Street and Wanke Road. The point of the girls’ work was to find out how the names affected property prices. According to the findings, residents of Beaver Street will be disappointed to learn they face losses of up to 20 per cent compared to nearby counterparts of streets with less Benny Hillesque names. Ouch. Just imagine the hit on Grogan Court! Still, it could be worse - North Geelong’s De Stefano Drive was, and still is, named after a former Geelong mayor who subsequently ended up in jail for stealing $8.6 million from clients of his accountancy company. But there’s nothing funny about that! Meanwhile, 23 Geelong governmental and welfare-sector bodies have signed a “Statement of Commitment” against family violence. Everyone from Barwon Water to City Hall and Worksafe put pen to paper on Thursday morning, acknowledging that “family violence is unacceptable” and pledging resources to spreading the message. Without downplaying the terrible scourge of family violence, the average punter might scratch their head wondering why anyone would need to condemn it with a Statement of Commitment. To the rest of us it’s a given that family violence is “unacceptable”. Or were the 23 previously indifferent to the problem? What about child labour, arson, sex assault? Have they signed commitments against those as well? If our righteous 23 need to sign a Statement of Commitment to condemn evil then they’re going to need a lot more paper!

Pool vapour scare for 16 GOBBLE GOBBLE: Happy Talkin’ Turkey winners Laura Johnsey and Tom Bliss with cat Ayah. 175700 (Rebecca Hosking)
First turkey for Indy winner By Luke Voogt Newtown 31-year-old Laura Johnsey has “never had a real Christmas” - or the turkey that comes with it. But all that changed after she became one of this week’s Talkin’ Turkey winners. “Omg I’ve won a turkey!” she said when the Indy’s Christmas correspondent called. Laura grew up in a “broken home” and her mother struggled with mental illness. “I got through that and got myself through uni to do the work I do now,“ the youth worker said. She and housemate Tom Bliss were making up for lost time preparing a traditional Christmas with the newest addition to their household - GAWS rescue cat Ayah. “What better way to celebrate this year than
with a turkey, my cat and my new housemate they’re like my adopted family,” she said. “Ayah’s such a good, loyal cat. She’ll probably get half the turkey.” Last week’s turkeys were in the advertisements of The Joker Shoppe, The Big Shed, Geelong Wheelchairs, Chef’s Essentials and Toyworld. The five turkeys are hidden in separate ads again this week. To go into the draw, entrants must supply their name and phone number along with the business names of the five advertisers with a hidden turkey each. To enter email indy@geelongindy.com.au, leave a message on Talkin’ Turkey hotline 5249 6721, or lodge in person at the Indy’s office, first floor, 74-78 Moorabool Street, Geelong

Some parents chose to take their children to hospital for further assessment and advice.” Mr Spiller apologised for the worry the incident caused parents or children. “We would all prefer that such incidents never occurred,” he said.

A vapour scare forced the evacuation of small children from Leisurelink Aquatic Centre at Waurn Ponds on Wednesday night. Paramedics rushed 16 people, including children, to hospital after they reported breathing difficulties. City Hall investigations on Thursday revealed that the swimming centre had experienced a power outage for 30 minutes just before the incident. “When power was restored, the plant room resumed injecting disinfectant agent (liquid chlorine) into the pool water,” the City’s spokesperson Geoff Russell said. “This caused a natural chloramines reaction, which resulted in an elevated odour, especially in the children’s pool area. We believe this odour led to some breathing irritation for some of the children in the pool at the time.” The pool’s staff evacuated about 100 people and called emergency services. Paramedics took 12 people to Geelong hospital and four to Epworth Geelong in Waurn Ponds. Barwon Health urged locals to only go the emergency department for serious or lifethreatening conditions in response to the incident. “Due to an incident at Leisurelink Waurn Ponds, the University Hospital Geelong Emergency Department is at increased demand,” the authority posted. Barwon Health later said the patients appeared to have avoided serious injury. “These individuals are currently under observation in our short stay unit and are showing no signs of illness,” it posted.

Revitalising Central Geelong this week announced the Laneways Street Party for 8 December, to celebrate the city’s newly upgraded ‘west end’. Geelong mayor Bruce Harwood invited locals to come enjoy the new trees, public art, alfresco areas and street furniture. “It’s time to celebrate the completion of this key Revitalising Central Geelong project. It’s an opportunity to enjoy a catch up with friends and family and experience what the revitalised laneways have on offer.” Businesses in Little Malop and James streets and adjoining laneways will serve after- work drinks and dinner. “I encourage you to come and support local businesses while enjoying the vibrancy of the ‘West End’ of Malop Street and adjoining laneways,” Cr Harwood said. Free champagne will flow in Geelong’s laneways as the city celebrates its newly revitalised centre in an all-ages street party next Friday. The celebrations kick off with The Gordon’s Waiter’s Race along Little Malop Street at 3pm. Party goers will be the true winners as the finest local waiters battle to impress and earn the title of Geelong’s best. The celebrations continue with free champagne and cake for the first 300 people at 4pm. Family fun around every corner will include special guests Norman the Unicorn, Geelong's Magic Meter Elves and a Piano Bar Prince and Princess singalong. Pop up shops and photo exhibitions will fill the laneways, while live music, street performances and carnival sideshows will carry on into the night. The city will also launch its Live Music Action Plan and Chrissy Amphlett mural on the night.
From page 1 The average crowd member spent more than $40 on the night with 83 per cent buying food and 26 per cent shopping whilst in Central Geelong. But the former Geelong administrators only guaranteed the tree’s future until next Christmas, when they voted to continue the $400,000 annual spend. An economic analysis by consultancy firm IER found the tree brought $2.16 million to Geelong each year. My Lyons said the State Government needed to take over the tree to make it even better, especially “considering the amount of money they’re wasting on White Night.” He added the majority of money from White Night celebrations would go to companies in Sydney. “I do think it will become an election issue.” Mr Lyons hoped the 25-metre structure would eventually eclipse Brazil’s 53-metre high Christmas tree in Rio De Janeiro. “The tree needs to go up a couple of storeys and then a storey every year,” he said. Mr Lyons congratulated City Hall adviser Kelly Ivens on this year’s addition of lighting the Christmas tree’s star for the first time. “I think it I was an incredible success,” he said. “It’s a bit like Kylie Minogue. You’ve got reinvent it every year.” Geelong Mayor Bruce Harwood said keeping the tree as a “much loved Christmas tradition” was a priority for council. “It’s great to see such strong community support for the lighting of Geelong’s floating Christmas tree,” he said. “The tree brings people together to share the spirit of Christmas; it increases trade for local businesses and it’s fast becoming an icon of our region.” Mr Harwood said council would consider applying for state funding for the tree.

Grovey girl’s in top shape By Luke Voogt Grovedale “everyday woman” Hannah Smoorenburg overcame her body image struggles to make her catwalk debut yesterday. The 25-year-old joined four women from across Australia embracing their bodies in time for summer. “I’m not a model at all,” she said. “It’s all about embracing who you are and what you’ve got, and having fun with it.” Hannah recently completed a swimwear photo shoot as part of a Victorian company’s search for five women of all shapes and sizes. She joined the women, aged 20 to 53 and sized 10 to 20, on the runway at a summer launch party in Melbourne. “It was such a fun adventure,” she said. “Everyone’s just so inspiring.“ “It’s so great to be surrounded by that energy and that vibe - it’s contagious.“ She will feature in the company’s summer advertisement campaign after modelling alongside her fellow first-time models. “I think when I see a picture of myself in the store that will be really exciting,” she said. “I think it’s the smart thing to do. At the end the day we’re the consumers - if we don’t see ourselves in what we’re buying, how can they expect us to buy their products? “It really showcases that we all come in different shapes and sizes. It’s such a good message.” The influx of Photoshopped and filtered bikini images on social media in summer put pressure on women to have the “perfect body”,
Hannah said. “Even when I was a teenager, we had My Space and I was just coming onto Facebook. I can’t even imagine the effect it’s having on young women today.” Hannah hoped to “inspire girls who aren’t too confident with themselves”. “I’ve struggled with body image in the past but I’ve sort of learnt to embrace my body,” she said. The avid boxer and runner said focusing on her health and looking after herself changed her perspective. “I haven’t always been confident but becoming physically active helped me overcome my insecurities and love my body for what it can do instead of how it looks.” Swimwear Galore partnered with the Body Image Movement for the I Will Embrace Summer promotion. The promotion aimed to throw out the “myth of the bikini body” and encourage women to embrace their curves, stretch marks, cellulite and scars during summer. Founder of the Body Image Movement Taryn Brumfitt said Australian women were tired of seeing only “one type of airbrushed model” when shopping for swimwear. “There’s a direct correlation between the way the media portrays women and the way women report feeling about their bodies. “With the rise of social media, we’re finding that apps like Instagram negatively impact a woman’s body image.”

FAMILY VIOLENCE HAS NO GOOD DAYS. Family Violence stems from men who think they are better than women. Men who exercise control, and misuse power. And they might think it’s only their wife or partner they’re harming, and that their children are fine. But they’re not. In fact the violence their children are witnessing or hearing is just as damaging to them, their futures and their future relationships. If you need support, talk to a friend, or go to vic.gov.au/familyviolencesupport or call Safe Steps on 1800 015 188.

Wicked win at our Oscars By Luke Voogt Two witches in a local production of Wicked left their competition green with envy after sharing one of Geelong's top Oscar awards. The judges couldn’t decide which witch deserved Best Female Lead more, splitting the award between Newton’s Sophie Collins and Morgan Heynes. Collins played good witch Glinda while Melbourne counterpart Heynes played the evil Elphaba in the same production. “It’s amazing to be recognised,” Collins said. “She was slightly disappointed she wasn’t able to be there on Sunday night. But it was well deserved and she was as excited as I was to receive the award.” More than 200 local theatre stars and glitterati gathered at Drysdale's Potato Shed on Sunday for Geelong Theatre Awards' first presentation ceremony. “That’s an awful lot of people in this industry working hard to produce exceptional quality theatre for our local audiences,” Collins said. “It’s an event that I hope will grow.” Collins, or “aunty diva” to her five nieces and nephews, grew up in Geelong and played her first role in Annie at age 12. She played a small role in Neighbours and worked in England before returning home. “I’ve never looked back because the quality of theatre here is of a professional standard,” she said. The 42-year-old won a Music Theatre Guild of Victoria award for best supporting actress in 2016. She and Heynes will contest for best lead actress at the awards on 9 December, where they will perform a segment for their toughest critics yet. “We’ve got our fingers crossed that we take home some more trophies from that event as well.” The Geelong Theatre Awards have run on-
DOUBLE TROUBLE: Newtown's Sophie Collins shared the Best Female Lead with Morgan Heynes for their roles as witches in Wicked. 175694 line since 2009. “But last night was the first we got everybody from the Geelong theatre community in the same room,” explained Entertainment Geelong’s Colin Mockett. “We set records for champagne consumption.” Wicked also took out the best musical, while a Geelong production of Pygmalion won best show. The play used scene changes, normally theatre “dead time”, to create a “delightful piece of
theatre”, Mockett said. “In my years of reviewing I’ve never seen this particular system of scene changing.” Director Alard Pett said his cast were thrilled with the award. The inspiration for innovative scene changes came from wanting to use people as part of the set, he said. “(I wanted) to utilise the talents of those who were playing minor roles.” Pygmalion was Pett’s first show as director for Geelong Repertory Theatre Company after
15 years of acting and set design. Newtown’s Ben Mitchell won Best Male Lead for his role in Pygmalion, one of 22 awards on the night. Geelong’s 33 theatre companies presented 60 plays during 2017, generating more than $2 million for the local economy, according to Entertainment Geelong. The Geelong Oscars are named for Oscar Ashe, who grew up in Geelong in the early 20th century before becoming an international star on London’s West End.

LETTERS Take the power back As no-one has supported or rebutted my recent letter regarding power bills, I would like to add a bit more to the equation. In recent days and weeks we have seen businesses going to the wall simply because they cannot afford massive price rises for their gas and electricity. This being the case, I find it impossible to believe that people can idly sit by watching our economy crumble. And for governments to sit by while businesses go broke is an absolute breach of contract - the constitutional contract for “peace, order and good government” - and is a momentous disgrace. If the case is that foreign-owned companies blithely send our businesses and employment prospects to the wall, then nationalisation of gas and electricity utilities is a good or best case. In 2013 the Australian Tax Office (ATO) chased these same companies for some $750 million in unpaid taxes while one company’s failure to maintain assets in bushland led to bushfires that killed 170 Victorians, including the much-loved news presenter Brian Naylor. As we all know, the fire started with a fault in a powerpole on a semi-remote road. Easily fixed, but not done. The ATO settled the tax matter for $80 million some time later. Whatever, this government-made power mess needs fixing, as the governments’ main claim for the need to privatise was more competition and reduced prices - a fallacy and lie on both counts. This mess needs fixing, quickly. Gary Oraniuk Geelong West

amused to learn that, according to Mr Lipka, “thermal coal is not dispatchable". What is not and never will be dispatchable is wind and solar PV power. “Energy prices are expensive," Mr Lipka tells us. You bet, but they were half the price before renewables were forced onto the grid before that coal gave us all the power we needed at a lower cost. And yet, as Peter Rees points out, people who should know better say “more renewables will reduce prices". Flying pigs indeed! Tim Saclier Leopold

Germany better than here All our power stations are rapidly moving toward the end of their lives with clapped-out machinery . When anything is privatised a 15 per centplus profit is mandatory immediately on the investment, plus a tax concession for depreciation of all equipment. That can be about 20 per cent on top of the expected profit. Solar panels have virtually no maintenance and windmills have only one slow-moving part per turbine. In Europe there is no bickering about what has to be done. They have been at it for over 40 years already. Take Germany, which has achieved over 85

The bit I really like is the power grid, which is underground and fed directly with power generated anywhere - there are no high-voltage powerlines running across the countryside, no transformer power stations spoiling the views. I would rather a windmill than a power pole carrying over a dozen wires in front of my place. Pigs might fly on renewables Climate alarmists, through lack of research, take so long to wake up to the scam they’re promoting. Derek Lipka (Letters, 24 November) is worried about the heat, which so far is about .8C higher than it was at the end of the Little Ice Age. Where would the temperature go from there but up - a gentle warmth that is greening the planet. According to Mr Lipka, Peter Rees and I “should know that Hazelwood was closed because it was worn out." Not so. It had decades of life left, but was uneconomical to maintain for four reasons: the millions of taxpayer dollars poured into promoting renewables, mainly wind, and forcing that power onto the grid destroyed Hazelwood’s baseload capacity; the Victorian Government trebled the royalties payable on Hazelwood’s coal; the government raised the renewable energy target to 40 per cent; and Hazelwood’s owner, Engie, was well aware of the government’s determination to abandon its coal reserves. Alan Barron (Letters, 17 November) will be
Derek Lipka cannot go unchallenged. Why label those who oppose global warming theory as “dinosaurs” and “deniers”? It’s reminiscent of schoolyard bullying rather than rational discussion of the veracity of global warming claims. Mr Lipka said sceptics should check the facts. We have, that’s why we are sceptics. All his claims were highly contentious. Many scientists who have worked in the field of climate change with the IPCC, CSIRO, NASA and CRU have raised serious questions about the methodology used, including its overreliance on homogenised data and computer modelling. Most of the warming in the past century is not due to rising CO2 levels, but largely to reworked homogenised data. Saying the last 17 years were the hottest on record is dubious because official recordkeeping only began after 1920. Mr Lipka doesn’t think coal is suited for dispatchable power. To paraphrase John McEnroe, he can’t be serious. If all our fossil-fuel plants closed tomorrow and Australia attempted to run on mostly renewable energy there would be massive power outages and the economy would collapse because renewables can’t supply power 24-7. Coal-fired power is cheap, efficient and provides reliable baseload power day and night. Renewables only work with fossil fuel back-up. I challenge Mr Lipka to debate these issues with me at a public forum in a place and time of his choosing. Alan Barron Geelong Climate Sense Coalition convenor
Apologies for data In my haste preparing a letter published in last week’s Geelong Indy, I relied on memory when writing that Australia’s coal generation capacity had shrunk from “20GW to 15GW over the past six years, while China’s is over 2000GW and rising”. It should have read: “Australia’s coal generation capacity has shrunk from about 28GW to 23GW over the past six years, while China’s is over 1000GW and rising”. I normally thoroughly check my data references, so I apologise to readers. Peter Rees Bell Park

Home care to suit individual circumstances Kellie says that she provides a wide variety of services, depending on what each customer requires. “Everyone’s Home Care Package is diferent. A lot of people need help with housework, while others are quite capable of doing that themselves but might need assistance with their medication. As much as possible, we provide whatever is necessary to allow people to keep living in their own homes.” Kellie says that helping people to socialise and connect with the local community is a common part of the support that Baptcare provides. “I take my customers out to all sorts of places. It might be to the opp shop or the cricket, or just for a nice drive. Whatever they want to do, we try our best to accommodate it.”
Having locally based workers makes a big diference to people in Geelong, Kellie says. “Our customers feel that they know the people who are looking after them, so it’s a more personalised service. But it’s also reassuring for them to know that their carers understand the Geelong area, including other local services they can access.” Another important aspect of Baptcare’s home care service, according to Kellie, is that every person’s care is overseen by a Care Coordinator with healthcare qualifications. “All our Care Coordinators have a nursing or allied health degree, which is a great advantage. It means they have more insight into our customers’ needs, and can bring in the right people to help when those needs change.”
Caring in more ways than one Kellie says that Baptcare is more than just a service provider. “Baptcare is a truly caring organisation that goes out of its way to make sure older people receive the best possible care. This is not just a job for me – I do it because I love it. And it really means a lot to me that when I visit someone, it can make their day.”
Baptcare provides a wide range of home care services, both through government-funded Home Care Packages and as self-funded services. These include: > Transport to social events or appointments > Social support groups > Day/overnight respite > Meal preparation > Home maintenance, vacuuming, changing sheets, cleaning, gardening > Help with daily tasks such as showering or dressing > Nursing and allied health.

View driving leads Geelong real estate agents are beginning to see results from their industry’s new property listings website just months after its relaunch. Real Estate Institute of Victoria rebranded its website as View.com.au in July, with an emphasis on driving referrals to participating agents. The site continues to list thousands of dwellings for sale, but traffic has skyrocketed as users flock to its Property 360 tool, offering free data on more than 10,000,000 properties around Australia. Property 360 provides current valuations based on each property’s previous sales prices and the value of nearby listings with similar features. The tool also allows users to update property details with renovation additions, such as extra bedrooms or larger garages, to obtain revised values. Agents subscribing to View.com.au can take advantage of Property 360’s referral option, with users’ contact details forwarded when they ask for a “local expert” to conduct an appraisal. View.com.au’s James Strahan says Property 360 has so far generated 16 referrals in Geelong on the back of 6300-plus local visits since the relaunch just a few months ago. The fast growth in traffic is bound to send the figures consistently higher as more users discover the free tool, he says. View.com.au has now established itself as Australia’s third largest property website with the participation of interstate real estate institutes. The site achieved 2.2 million visits nationally in October, up around a third since the relaunch. The site gives real estate agents a chance to take back control of their industry’s online
Mick Alexander Davidsons Finance Services director Davidsons has appointed Mick Alexander as director of the company’s new finance services team, which has expanded the business’s services from personal lending to leasing and commercial lending. With previous experience working with a company offering similar services, new team leader Mr Alexander has brought to Davidsons Finance Services more than 20 years of knowledge from working in the industry.
Michelle Lee Davidsons general manager HOT PROPERTY: View.com.au is set to draw in keen home buyers after it saw 2.2 million visits nationally in October, up by about a third since its relaunch. marketing amid ongoing complaints about the two existing dominant players’ rates. The Geelong Indy has been promoting view. com.au since the paper’s parent company, Star News Group, became a partner in the website. Indy managing editor Tony Galpin says view.com.au has arrived at an ideal time for prospective buyers, including a recent influx of investors in the Geelong region. “The ability to look up the prices and previous sales value of as many properties as you like for free is a real advantage,” he says. “Market insights such as this often come from other companies at a charge per property, so it’s a great way to do your homework
without accumulating big bills.” Property 360 is also invaluable to anyone wanting to sell their home or find out the previous and current selling prices of other properties for comparison purposes, Mr Galpin said. “Even if you’re not selling or buying it’s just a lot of fun looking up all the figures on any home you choose. It’s certainly entertaining, with useful information, too. “And if you are in the market for a new home, view.com.au has lots of local listings and rentals as well. “It’s a complete real estate website with the added value of Property 360.”
Davidsons has also welcomed Michelle Lee, who has been appointed as the company’s general manager in Geelong. Ms Lee’s role includes overseeing human resources, finance, information technology, marketing and business development. Shee brings extensive experience from previous roles in industries such as building, hospitality, finance and banking. More recently Ms Lee worked in legal-sector in general management roles for over 15 years.

FINALLY FRIDAY
Theatre classics on stage Geelong Performing Arts Centre (GPAC) has unveiled next year’s theatre season, featuring a swag of contemporary Australian works alongside two great classics. Hundreds of theatre lovers turned up to GPAC’s season launch last night to see what the centre had on offer for 2018. Award-winning comedian Denise Scott hosted the launch, giving locals a sneak peek at Geelong’s on-stage line-up. GPAC will present a nine-show season featuring some uniquely Australian stories, that promoters said would challenge and inspire audiences and take them on unexpected journeys. The season will begin in February with A Little Night Music, an award-winning Sondheim classic starring Nadine Garner. Garner, well known for television roles including the ABC’s The Doctor Blake Mysteries, joins theatre veteran John O’May (Cabaret, Phantom of the Opera). The play, which debuted on Broadway in 1973, tells the story of jaded lovers and scandals in Sweden during the turn of the 20th century. Then in April, the circus comes to town. Nationally and internationally renowned Brisbane circus troupe Circa will head south with its new work Peepshow. Later in the year, new Australian drama The Bleeding Tree comes to Geelong for the first time. The award-winning production, from Sydney’s Griffin Theatre, begins with a shot shattering the quiet of the night. A mother and her daughters have just welcomed home the man of the house ... with a bullet. The only issue left is disposing of the body.
HARD-HITTING: Action-packed play Prize Fighter brings the best in Australian inring theatre action to Geelong in 2018. (Dylan Evans)
The company will return later in the year with a second work direct from its Australian premiere, The Almighty Sometimes. Local choir Raise the Bar will feature in The Events, a powerful new play by David Greig starring Catherine McClements. The chorus features the Geelong Youth Choir’s adult singers including alumni and family members of younger singers in the group.
From Tasmania comes a must-see Australian production The Season featuring charismatic Trevor Jamieson in a laugh-out-loud comedy about family and culture. The family theme continues with Red Stitch Actors Theatre’s recently commissioned drama Jurassica. State Theatre Company of South Australia will return to Geelong with its adaptation of a literary classic, Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen.
Rounding out the season is Prize Fighter, an action-packed production from La Boite Theatre and Brisbane Festival that combines engrossing storytelling with the visceral thrill of live boxing. Nine and five-show theatre season packages are available with significant savings on single ticket prices. For details and bookings go to gpac.org.au/2018

FINALLY FRIDAY
Icons raise their voices By Luke Voogt
SINGH ALONG: Taxiride front man Jason Singh and his bandmates will play alongside the likes of John Farnham and Kate Ceberano in Geelong.
12371486-ACM47-17
Melbourne pop rock band Taxiride will join Australian music icons John Farnham and Kate Ceberano in a first-time concert at Geelong Racecourse next weekend. Singer and lead guitarist Jason Singh was keen to get on stage with The Voice again after playing alongside him earlier this year. “It’s a great honour,” he said. “Anyone who’s heard Farnham in the last 40 years knows he’s the best voice Australia’s ever produced.” Singh grew up idealising Farnham and remembered him coming into his parents’ Melbourne restaurant when he was a child. “He kissed one of my sisters on the forehead and she still tells that story to this day.” Since February Singh had played alongside Farnham with Taxiride and in “intimate” solo gigs. “I know him and he knows me so it’s pretty amazing,” he said. Singh said the Twilight at the Track on 9 December would be his first local gig with Taxiride since moving to Ocean Grove. He moved to the town in May 2016, seeking a ‘sea change’ with his wife and two children. “Why would you want to live anywhere else?” he said. Taxiride will play the hits many locals grew up to in the '90s, like Get Set, Everywhere You Go and Creepin’ Up Slowly. “We’ll get strung up by our ankles if we don’t play those songs,” Singh said. “They’re the songs that people know and the songs that people want.”
Singh was excited ahead of playing with all the “great acts” like 1927, Richard Clapton and The Black Sorrows. “And it’s only 10 minutes up the road,” he said. “It feels like I’m a part of this town now. There’s so many good things coming to Geelong and it’s great to be a part of it.” He had played alongside some of the bands already this year, he said. “We tend to bump into each other each weekend." The Indy last spoke to Singh in 2015 when Taxiride had just reunited. He has since released new solo albums, but playing with his bandmates was more about returning to their roots, he said. “So far it’s been more about paying homage to our incarnation - so to speak.” The band split in 2008 due to the pressures of its rapid rise. “We went from relative nobodies to the top of the tree really fast,” Singh said. “When you’re in three different countries in one day, that sort of takes its toll.” But Singh said it “would have been a crying shame” if his bandmates had remained apart. “We had all these amazing experiences and saw the world together, but weren’t talking to each other.” So Singh jumped on the phone to his bandmates and “sent 150 messages” to guitarist Tim Watson. “I was going to keep calling him until I died,” he said. “I just started hounding them.”

The Ponds Hotel is the perfect place to stop for coffee or breakfast on your way to the coast with its new cafe. The hotel has sold quality, affordable meals since the 1970s and has now added premium Julius Meinl coffee to the menu. “It’s a good atmosphere, you can come in, sit and relax before shopping,” says hotel manager Margaret Spence. The new cafe stocks all the favourites, like home-made muffins, fresh water creek sponges and fuchsias - with gluten-free options available. Since the cafe opened a month ago it’s served breakfast every Saturday and Sunday from 8.30am. “There were often people in the car park waiting for the hotel to open before we had the cafe,” Margaret says. The cafe has options from a traditional English breakfast to a simple muesli to give coastal drivers energy for the day. The hotel is already a gateway to the coast and Margaret says she gets plenty of people on a trips. “Particularly if the weather’s nice - it’s always nice to hear what they’re up to.” A long-time Geelong resident, Margaret has 20 years in the business and enjoys managing both The Ponds and Norlane Hotel. “It keeps me busy,” she says. Her friendly and competent staff make the Ponds Hotel the ideal place to stop, freshen up, stock up or just relax. The Ponds Hotel is located 10km from Geelong CBD at 1154 Princes Highway, Waurn Ponds. The cafe opens at 8am and closes at 3.30pm each day.

Residents enjoy a fun and interactive Dancercise activity for residents which encourages creativity and self-expression.
Moving time familiar music. The Dancercise activity is a collection of guided exercise and dance movements with residents contributing to the choreography as the activity occurs. Dancercise offers residents the option of an accelerated exercise routine that involves more rapid movements in sequence with the tempo of the music. “The activity has become a great success with our residents” Liz said. “We have observed a noticeable increase in participation as residents remark how much they enjoy the high energy of the movements with the unfamiliar and contemporary music.”

Homestyle Belmont Grange Residential Aged Care Facility has recently introduced a new dimension to its monthly exercise program. The Lifestyle team has developed a fun and interactive Dancercise activity for residents which encourages creativity and self-expression. Dancercise emerged from a conversation with some residents about the different types of dancing they had been involved in. Lifestyle co-ordinator Liz Toffoli did some research on dance movements and saw the opportunity to create an alternative exercise routine that continues to promote the value of movement and inspire an appreciation of un-
Fortunately, missing teeth can be replaced.
A fit for tooth replacement Those who have missing teeth may be all too aware of their importance to looks and dental health. Teeth are designed to work together to help chew, speak and smile. When teeth are missing it is difficult to do these things. Even the loss of back tooth may cause the mouth to shift and the face to look older. Fortunately, missing teeth can be replaced. The following are three options a dentist may suggest, depending on needs. Replacement teeth should last for years at a time, so it is important to choose the correct treatment. 1. Implants: Many patients choose implants to replace a single tooth, several teeth, or to support a full set of dentures. Implants are posts that are surgically placed in the upper or lower jaw, where they function as a sturdy anchor for replacement teeth. geelongindy.com.au
They are made of titanium and other materials that are accepted by the human body. 2. Fixed Bridges: Another tooth replacement option is a fixed bridge. This is a restoration that fills the space where one or more teeth have been lost. A fixed bridge is bonded or cemented into place. 3. Removable Partial Denture: As a name describes, a removable partial denture can easily be taken out of the mouth for cleaning. Partial dentures usually have replacement teeth fixed to a plastic base that matches the colour of gums. The plastic base may cover a metal framework. Partial dentures often have some form of clasp that attaches to natural teeth. Book a free dental implant consultation with Dr Rashi Gupta at Norlane Dental Surgery on 1800 246 247. Grief at Christmas One support network available for people in the Greater Geelong region is Tuckers Funeral and Bereavement Service. Since the late 1970s Tuckers has been offering additional care to the families it serves through its Bereavement Care Program. Grief can be a confusing experience and grieving people are often misunderstood because their world has been literally turned upside down. It can show itself in many different emotions and behaviours and is experienced differently by each person.
Tips for coping with grief during the Christmas season. Acknowledge that the coming holiday season will be different, perhaps even challenging. Make plans, but keep them flexible. Discuss plans with other family members in advance. Decide which traditions the family wants to keep or those that should be changed. Accept that everyone grieves differently, even within the same family.

The summer holiday season is just around the corner. For most people this is a joyous time, traditionally sharing gifts with loved ones and sharing happy times with families - and eating too much! However, for some the holiday season can be daunting. Each year there are many people who face the holidays for the first time since experiencing the loss of a loved one. Regardless of age, grief can come to people in many forms and often the most difficult is the loss of a loved one.

Having a car serviced can be inconveniencing – especially for busy CBD workers. Dropping off the car, getting to work on time and getting back to pick up the car later can be troublesome to say the least. So how much easier is life when the mechanic is in the city, too? And how much better for the car – and its safety and reliability? Matt Henderson and partner Glenn Campbell at Motors on Malop have decades of solid experience in servicing and repairs. Matt served 15 years with Mitsubishi, Glenn put in 10 with Honda and they’re amply capable across all makes and models. “We have free all-day parking. Customers can just leave their car and walk to work – we’re just near the corner of Malop and Bellerine streets – then pick it up when they’re ready,” Matt says. “We do air-conditioning, tyres and wheel alignments, steering and suspensions, logbook servicing. We can do new vehicle servicing and save customers money. “We offer free advice and quotes and our same-day servicing. With parts and replacements close at hand, waiting time is reduced.” Drivers planning holidays should ensure their cars have been checked. Why not book your car in for a safety inspection with us before you go. “It’s important to know your car is in good order, especially if you’re taking the family,” Matt says. “We’re right in the city, so it’s much easier than people think to make those important checks.” Motors on Malop is at 213 Malop St, Geelong, phone 5222 1028.

Drop the Toyota down a gear or two, give it a bootfull and enjoy the ride. Because there's no turbocharger and the engine responds virtually instantly. Love it. The engine has a nice sporty note that’s most pleasing to the ear, noticeably better than the sound from the earlier models. You do need a lot of revs to get the best from it - which is exactly how it should be. Gear changes are slick and easy and the short throw lever is in just the right place. Handling is exceptionally good and the LE’s new Sachs system is even more responsive than that in the others in the 86 range. Think what you want the car to do and it seems to get the message from your brain rather than simply through your hands and feet. Clever design means ride comfort doesn't really seem any different from the standard Toyota 86. We weren’t able to do a back-toback with other variants, but will see if we can manage that some day. The front sport seats provide good support but aren’t too aggressive in the shape of the side bolsters. Nevertheless if your legs and back are not as young as they used to be you may struggle to get in and out. Noise from the tyres is generally subdued, but some harsh surfaces, particularly concrete and coarse-chip, do increase sound intrusion. Though this isn't likely to faze a full-on keen driver may we suggest you check this for yourself if harsh roads are part of your - and other occupants’ - lives. At $41,490 the Limited Edition 86 costs significantly more than the $36,490 GTS on which it's based, but in the world of high-performance that's the penalty you have to pay. Would I buy an 86 LE? Most certainly, the appearance and excellent on-road performance make it something special. Then again, if I was tight on money the $5000 offers a big saving.

By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring In a world that's moving at breakneck speed a five-year-old car like the Toyota 86 needs a serious freshen-up to keep it in the minds of potential buyers. A clever marketing move is the introduction of limited editions - not ‘special’ editions which can be moved off the showroom floors in volume and soon fade from the mind. Limited editions take on an aura of exclusivity hence the Toyota LE. Only 60, all in a wild orange shade, came Downunder a couple of months back. We’ve just spent a most enjoyable week in one. It's not just a fancy new colour, Toyota 86 has plenty of other changes under that stunning skin. Genuine sports changes by way of a stiffer Sachs suspension and larger Brembo brakes (four-calliper front, two-calliper rear) than those on the 86 GTS on which the LE is based. Toyota tells us the styling of the 86 was inspired by the 1965 Toyota 2000GT, a sports model that's already being auctioned for over a million dollars. Did we mention the colour? Of course we did, but it's arguably the biggest feature of 86’s LE so it deserves a place in the Styling section of the report. Tagged Solar Orange it's only offered in the LE so lesser 86s have to make do with Velocity Orange. The black details on the LE set off its wild paint brilliantly. A different design of 17-inch 10-spoke alloys ties in nicely with the body colour and makes it easy to see the big Brembos. Inside, the 86 LE there's a suede dashboard with - of course - orange stitching. The seats and steering wheel gets the same stitching treatment. The Toyota / Subaru 2.0-litre flat-four engine was revised in late 2016, lifting it from 200 horsepower to 207 bhp (152 kW if you like metric engine numbers). If you don't want a six-speed manual, tough luck - that’s all you get in this cool little sports machine. At the same time as the 2016 upgrade the differential ratio was reduced to get grunt to the road by way of having the engine at higher revs for the same road speed. More about this in the Driving section.

Cats on rise with an amazing run of wins LOCAL CRICKET Jim Timberlake Geelong Cricket Club has continued its amazing run of form, winning both of their T20 games last weekend, and in the process, consolidating their spot in the top eight. On Saturday, the side travelled to Toorak Park to take on Prahran without in-form captain Eamonn Vines, who was rewarded for his excellent form with a call-up to the Victorian side. Unfortunately on this occasion he was asked to perform Twelfth Man duties, but there is no doubt a first-class debut is not far away. In his absence, the side was asked to bowl first, and restricted their hosts to just 8/100, Brenton McDonald and Nathan Alexander both taking three wickets. In reply, the Cats cruised to victory, Angus Boyd (32) top scoring, while Tim Ludemann (20) was the next best. At home on Sunday against Footscray, they were again asked to bowl first, and a disciplined spell from Josh Cobb (3/13) saw Geelong restrict the visitors to just 5/116. Josh McDonald (52) opened up for the Cats in their run chase, and ensured that his side not only took the points, but also moved up to sixth spot on the ladder. Tomorrow the side travels to Shramms Reserve to play against fourth-placed Fitzroy Doncaster, knowing that a win would go a long way towards a possible finals berth come season’s end.
Jim Timberlake The Geelong Cricket Association starts round six tomorrow, and a mouth-watering top of the table clash awaits, when North Geelong, the only remaining undefeated team, takes on second-placed Geelong City at Richmond Crescent. The Magpies have been in outstanding form so far this season under the leadership of new coach Nathan Fitzpatrick. With so much depth at his disposal, the Bendigo recruit has all the tools needed to put fear into any opposition. With the likes of Damian Vassilou, Andrew Fergusson and Tom Mathieson all in fine early season form, they will take some beating.
The Sharks are building a formidable record of their own though. There is no doubt that they rely heavily on star batsman Richie Oliver, but their next tier of players are beginning to fine-tune their roles within the side to perfection. This game may well come down to a toss of the coin, as all visiting teams know the importance of batting first at Richmond Crescent. Murgheboluc v SOUTH BARWON, Geelong City v NORTH GEELONG, EAST BELMONT v Newtown and Chilwell, St Josephs v LARA, Leopold v GROVEDALE. Division two also has a top of the table clash to look forward to when Bell Park hosts Marshall this round. The Dragons have swept all before them so far this season, easily accounting for Manifold Heights last round, Shane Lymer (76, 2/29) one of the many stars to enjoy a solid game. Marshall also have been in sparkling form, although they probably haven’t had it quite as much their own way, particularly last week when they played in a thrilling tie with Bell Post Hill. That tight match might actually hold them in good stead in the long run however, as a side can learn more about itself when it has its back to the wall. The Bears will be keen to test themselves here, but Bell Park won’t lay down without a fight. ST PETERS v Manifold Heights, BELL PARK v Marshall, Torquay v HIGHTON, BELL POST HILL v Newcomb and District.

Olympics-ready Martin’s the wheel deal By Luke Voogt Breakwater’s Martin Dunn is aiming for Tokyo 2020 after surging up the wheelchair tennis rankings, two years after an accident left him unable to walk. “Six months ago that was a dream and now it’s slowly getting closer,” he said. ‘Marty’ will be one of hundreds enjoying Geelong’s free International Day of People with Disability celebrations on the waterfront on Sunday. the Australian open wheelchair division, after hitting a brick wall while riding at South Geelong on 15 November, 2015. “The last thing I remember was jumping on a bike at my friend’s house,” he said. “Then I was waking up in hospital.” Marty still regards himself as “rookie”, despite making the semi-finals of recent competition in Sydney and his Paralympic dreams. He played tennis constantly until age 13, but had hardly picked up a racquet after giving it up for football. But a wheelchair tennis coach visiting the

hospital got him back into the sport. “I picked up the racquet and played like it was yesterday,” he said. Marty can still move his legs and hopes to walk again. But wheelchair tennis had helped him recover mentally and travel the world, he said. “The world’s still my oyster - I do everything I used to do before the accident.” People with disabilities will share their stories at Eastern Beach from 11am to 4pm. Locals can have go at wheelchair tennis and modified versions of cricket, golf and soccer.
Lines, reels running hot ON THE BITE Adam Van der Lugt Some of the warmest November days in recent memory resulted in fantastic fishing over the past week. Snapper were the main target inside Corio Bay, with anglers finding fish to 5kg - just out from Clifton Springs and around Wilson Spit. According to most reports, the average size was around the 2kg to 3kg, with silver whiting and fresh squid the favoured baits. Anglers fishing baits for snapper in these areas should also try throwing around soft plastics for few flathead, which are in good numbers at the moment and can save the trip if the snapper don’t bite. The inner-harbour fished well for flathead on bluebait and soft plastics. The Gulp Turtleback worm rigged on a 1/8oz jighead and worked along the bottom is the most-productive method, with snapper, pinkies, trevally and pike possible bycatch. The squid fishing was exceptional along the Bellarine Peninsula from Clifton Springs to Queenscliff last week. Size 3.5 jigs in blue or green colourations worked best. Fishing offshore from Barwon heads and Breamlea was productive on the clam days. Peri and Fez launched at Barwon Heads over the weekend, finding flathead around the 50cm mark, snapper to 2kg and both arrow squid and calamari on the bite in 50m. Catching fresh slimy mackerel for bait was a great idea, with each drop producing a fish. Williamstown Sport and Game Fishing Club ran ANSA’s Port Phillip Bay convention last weekend, with the boundaries encompassing the bay and its estuaries. Competitors weight in many great fish, the standouts including a Frank Aarsman’s 2.8kg flathead and Frank Naylor’s 5kg gummy shark - both taken in Swan Bay - along with Danny Sparks’ 1.8kg Australian salmon from The Rip. Two kingfish to 2.5kg were also weighed, one caught at Portarlington and the other at Bell Reef. Local freshwater fired up with redfin in the Barwon River and local lakes. Fishing small minnow-style lures around Queen’s Park was a good option, accounting for fish to 800g. Anglers fishing the same area with corn or bread for baits tangled with carp to 5kg. Lake Purrumbete was back on the radar with brown trout nudging 10lb caught on Tassie Devils and mudeyes. Working the north and north-east corners of the lake on sunrise and late afternoon produced the best results. Lake Tooliorook and Deep Lake remained hot spots for brown and rainbow trout on trolled Tassie Devils in pink or yellow winged frog patterns. Land-based anglers fishing baits didn’t need to walk too far from their cars, with the boat ramps at both lakes providing ideal bases for casting out Sherbet Powerbait or mudeyes.
