Record rainfall By Peter Douglas While it wasn’t the rainfall of epic proportions as predicted, the Yarra Ranges region did experience a significant deluge, resulting in disruption to services and events. Over the predicted high danger period, from Friday 1 December through to 3 Sunday December, a combined 144.8mm of rain was recorded at the Ferny Creek weather station, according to the Bureau of Meteorology. This three-day rainfall figure eclipsed the 2017 average monthly rainfall at the station of 116.31mm. The highest daily rainfall figure was also recorded for 2017, with 89.6mm lashing the region on the Sunday, more than the 55.2mm recorded on 6 February this year. Last November, just 87.4mm rain fell on the region, less than Sunday’s figure. The Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe weather warning and flood watch for most parts of Victoria on Friday 1 December, warning of flash flooding, disruptions to main traffic routes, inundations of building and impacts to basic services such as public transport, sewerage, and power and water supplies.
Emerald SES Unit Controller, Ben Owen, said the region had heeded the warnings and prepared themselves well, taking advantage of sandbag collection points at Clematis Hall and at Lilydale. Though, Mr Owen said it was a typically busy time for the unit, with over 100 calls for assistance. “We had many call-outs where trees were down over houses or had caused disruptions to traffic,” he said. “Two of our volunteers headed out to help at Euroa, staying there over the weekend. But there were call-outs most nights here.” Among those calls for assistance included to a tree on a car port in Kallista and a tree on a house in Menzies Creek. In addition, there were many call-outs to trees on roads, including along Avon Road, Cockatoo, with the road closed for several hours. Mr Owen said, much like bushfire warnings, it was important for residents to remain vigilant and don’t become complacent, despite the impact being less than predicted. On Sunday, Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews was forced to defend emergency warnings as he visited what was meant to be the flood’s epicentre, in North East Victoria.
Mr Andrews told other media the Bureau of Meteorology could only use the data they had available, but implied they could be working on their phrasing. “We can look back on whether some comments were words I would have used, but ultimately the bureau and emergency services, myself included, we’ve been very clear with the Victorian community,” he said. “The total of rainfall was absolutely accurate - the intensity of it was different and the exact location of it was a bit different, that’s something we all should be happy about.” Yarra Ranges Tourism noted many events were cancelled over the weekend, which, it said, would impact on local operators. Meanwhile, Monbulk MP and Emergency Services Minister, James Merlino, cancelled an appointment on Friday to help spread the message about the potential impact. “It’s going to be a challenging three days for our emergency services, with severe weather predicted across the state with risk of flash flooding and riverine flooding, he said. “Everyone should carefully plan their activities today and into the weekend. Postpone non-

Council said residents whose houses suffered major structural damage should contact their insurer and the relevant council. Council added if the house had suffered major damage, council would complete a building assessment and provide advice on whether the house is habitable.

NEWS IN BRIEF
Demolition put on hold By Derek Schlennstedt The demolition of the former Montrose Maternal and Child Health Centre (MCHC) has been put on hold after Councillor Noel Cliff put forward an alternate recommendation at the 28 November council meeting. The recommendation to demolish the building at 4 Leith Road, Montrose, to create more parking spaces was contested when Cr Cliff threw a self-described “spanner in the works,” and suggested that it instead be used as a site for social enterprises in the Yarra Ranges. “I’d like to move that we defer this item tonight,” Cr Cliff said. The alternative recommendation is that the space be utilised by social enterprises in the area. One specific example that he selected was the use of the site by social enterprise Tasty Az, a local community social enterprise specialising in catering and hospitality services. Though, what is unique about Tasty Az is that they offer young community members living with a disability support in the form of jobs, traineeships and work placements in the catering sector. Unfortunately, Tasty Az can no longer stay at their 111 Mangans Road Lilydale building, and Councillor Cliff suggested that the empty building, due to be demolished, could be a good location for them to utilise. “Julie from Tasty Az does truly wonderful things - but she’s got a problem, where she stays is going to be closed in the middle of next year, and she’s desperate for somewhere to go. “I would like us to look at the feasibility of turning this facility into a kitchen for Tasty Az.” “Today, I went down to the former centre, and I have to say it is a tremendous building
Paying price for bald tyres
Coming into the festive season, police are reminding those holding parties to consider neighbouring houses. On Sunday morning at 7.30am Emerald police were called to a premises on Henry Street, Kooweerup for loud music. The party holders were handed a $1800 fine for failing to obey police direction to abate noise. Emerald police Sergeant Dave Calkin reminded residents to be considerate of neighbouring houses. “As we are coming into the festive season - if you’re having parties at home be considerate to neighbours ... keep the noise down after midnight, and if a direction is given by police to abate noise, then follow it, otherwise it is a fine,” Sgt Calkin said. “A popular misconception is that just telling your neighbours you’re having a party is a licence to make as much noise as you like for as long as you like.” Failing to obey police direction to abate noise is a $793 fine.
Police are reminding drivers to ensure their cars are roadworthy following a two-car collision on Belgrave-Gembrook Road near Mary Street. On Sunday 2 November around 2.30pm, a blue Ford Falcon XR6 travelling towards Cockatoo from Emerald lost control, hitting a roadside barrier and then colliding with a Mazda 3. Following investigation, police determined that the Ford Falcon had two front bald tyres which had exacerbated the likelihood of losing control in the wet conditions. Luckily, none of the occupants of the two vehicles was injured. Emerald police said the male driver from Narre Warren was given two penalty offences for the use of an unsafe vehicle and careless driving. Emerald Police Sergeant Dave Calkin urged drivers to ensure their cars were maintained and roadworthy. “Both front tyres on the offending vehicle were unroadworthy ... this especially affects a vehicles steering and as a result you are much more likely too aquaplane,” Sgt Calkin said. “While we haven’t had rain for an extended time during this weekend, we received a lot of heavy rain which makes the road extremely slippery, but this is only exacerbated when you have bald tyres.” “You’re not only a danger to yourself, but also to other road users when you choose to drive an unroadworthy vehicle.”
Silly schoolies
- it’s got buses going to the trains, across the mountain through Olinda all that area and goes down to Croydon and Lilydale connecting with trains. “The facility is really in good nick; I’m amazed it really is a well-looked after building. Julie won’t have massive problems setting up as a kitchen, but the most important thing is it will enable her to employ lots and lots of people with disabilities.” The alternate recommendation put forward by Councillor Cliff was also supported by Councillor Tim Heenan, who urged other councillors to look inside their hearts and give it a chance. “This has come out of left field tonight. I had no knowledge of Cr Cliff’s willingness to put in a completely different alternate recommendation to the one we had in relation to this item,” Cr Heenan said. Nevertheless, I am aware of the predicament that this wonderful enterprise is in, and Able Bakehouse is in a similar space - they’ve been trying to find a brand-new space, too.” “Councillors, I urge you to just search inside your hearts, to give this a little bit of a chance of being investigated. “It’s not something we need to demolish straight away, and perhaps there could be some really exciting good to come out of this for those people less fortunate or people unable to find mainstream employment." The two options originally tabled in relation to the demolition including the demolition of the Maternal and Child Health Centre building and attached public amenities, while a second option retained the public amenities. All councillors voted to defer the subject to complete a feasibility study in the possible use of the former MCHC building for community use as a social enterprise.
At 1.40pm on 30 November, Bass Coast Highway Patrol members intercepted an overloaded car in Thompson Avenue, Cowes, Phillip Island. The Holden Colorado ute had four people in the cabin and another three in the tray. A 19-year-old male driver from Monbulk was interviewed and will be summoned to attend court for carrying unrestrained passengers in a cargo area. The vehicle will be impounded at a substantial cost. The three unrestrained 18-year-old female passengers travelling in the cargo area have each received an infringement notice with a $317 penalty.
Spate of Scout Hall burglaries Police are investigating a series of targeted burglaries on Scout halls within the outer eastern suburbs since 23 November. Six Scout halls have since been targeted. These halls are in Ferntree Gully, Bayswater, Heathmont, Belgrave and Mount Evelyn, with cash and electronic items stolen. If you have any information about the offences, contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Help ’em to handle heat
The editor’s desk If you think about the significant fire events that have taken place in the hills over the past few decades, the Upwey Fire Brigade has been at the coalface of them all. But then consider all the challenges the brigade, and its many volunteers, have faced over what will be 100 years in February 2018. Impressive notion, isn’t it? Fittingly, the Upwey Fire Brigade Centenary Festival Committee is set to mark this milestone, with a range of activities and commemorations planned over the weekend of 24-25 February. You can play your part, too, with the committee seeking help in gathering items for their memorabilia display. Members of the community may have items such as newspaper clippings, CFA equipment, or even could just share their own memories. So, let’s help make the event a huge success. If you have a small piece of memorabilia, not matter how big or small, please consider allowing the Upwey CFA to show it off for a few days. Also, if we consider for just a moment that many of these firefighters are volunteers, who dedicated their time to protect both ourselves and the communities in which we live, there should be ample reasons to support their cause. Simply, they give so much and ask so little, it shouldn’t be too much effort to give something back. They mightn’t always ask for a pat on the back, but the local volunteers – and the deep history of this CFA brigade – surely deserves a little recognition from time to time. If you have suitable items available, please contact festival committee member, Peter Marke, on 0427 037 839. Peter Douglas
Animal
aid Mark Menze Animal Aid CEO Make sure your pet can handle the heat. It is so important to be mindful of the summer heat and to prepare for your furry friend’s health during summer. Hot weather can be distressing for your whole family, especially the four-legged members. Whether pets are at home with you, relocated during high fire risk days or brought along on holidays, we need to be sure that our pets are able to handle the heat. When your pet is unable to maintain their normal body temperature on a hot day, they will experience heat stress. On all hot days, especially days of Severe, Extreme or Code Red fire danger, keep your pets as cool as possible. They will be relying on you to help them manage the heat. “In cases of severe heat stress or heat stroke, pets may stop panting and vomit. If this occurs consult a vet immediately. It’s important to keep your vet’s contact details on hand,” says Dr Carolyn Warburton.
We’ve put together some top tips for beating the heat. Have fresh, cold water available at all times; Ensure your pet has shade at all times or bring them inside into a cool room; Wipe your pet down with a cool, damp towel or leave wet towels out for them to lie on; Wet your dog with cool water several times throughout the day; Consider buying a wading pool for your dog; Place ice blocks in your pet’s water bowl; Place ice in a pillow case and place it near your pet’s bed; Consider having your dog clipped if their coat is long and thick; Never leave your pets in a vehicle on a hot day; Avoid exercising your pet between 10am4pm on hot days, wait until the weather cools even to go for a walk; Take note of the surface your pet is walking on, if it is too hot for your bare feet it is too hot for their paws; and Think about your pet’s skin, pink noses and pale coats may need to have extra sun protection, pet friendly sunscreens are a must. Keep your pet in mind when the mercury rises and you and your furry friends will have an enjoyable and stress-free summer.

Steer clear of flood waters: Take the advice of Healesville SES Unit Controller, Geoff Stott, who urged residents to stay off the roads during floods. “Don’t drive through water, even 15cm of water and the car will float,” he said. “You also don’t know what’s underneath the water.” The SES’s advice is: don’t drive, play, walk or go into floodwater; you don’t know what you’re getting into.
2
Sandbag your property or business: Sandbag collection points were announced as the potential severity of the weekend’s flood events became known. Lilydale SES became a designated sandbag collection point, open all weekend.
3
Keep an eye out for weather warnings and updates: Visit the Bureau of Meteorology or VicEmergency websites. For more information on what else you can do to get ready for storms and floods visit www.ses.vic.gov.au/ get-ready. For assistance from the SES, call 132 500. If it’s life threatening, call triple-zero.

The Stop Adani Belgrave group last week revealed the results of a community survey to La Trobe MP, Jason Wood. Group member Emmanuelle Emile-Blake said the results were clear - the community did not support the development of the mine in North Queensland. Ms Emile-Blake said 280 of the 281 people surveyed declared their opposition to the mine, statistics she relayed to Mr Wood. “We also called on Jason Wood to take a stronger stand in support of the reef, farmers and the environment, and to protect Australians from the changes to our climate that burning the coal from the mine would cause,” she said.

Emerald Tourist Railway board member David Eaton on Thursday 23 November won the gold in the ‘Outstanding Contribution by an Individual’ category at the Victorian Tourism Awards. Mr Eaton first started work at Puffing Billy in 1989 as the marketing manager, a role he held for 20 years. During this time, he developed and managed campaigns that saw passenger numbers grow by 69 per cent, from 180,000 passengers per year in 1998 to 260,000 in 2009. He has played a vital role in transforming Puffing Billy into one of Australia’s most highly visited tourism attractions, which now contributes an estimated $47 million to the local visitor economy. Mr Eaton’s outstanding service was recognised with a life-membership of the Victoria Tourism Industry Council (VTIC). “I am very honoured and humbled to win this award and join a list of tourism icons who have won the award in the past, many of whom are good friends,” Mr Eaton said. “The Victorian tourism industry is a vital part of Victoria’s economy and I am proud to have played a small part in its success.” Puffing Billy Railway chief executive officer John Robinson said he has known David since he first started with the local icon. “David’s contribution to Puffing Billy has been significant and ongoing over a 30-year period, and his passion, dedication and knowledge has helped to shape the railway into one of Victoria’s major tourist attractions,” Mr Robinson said. “David volunteers hundreds of hours every year, supporting the Victorian tourism industry, and has done so throughout his entire career.” During his 30-year career in tourism, Mr Eaton has been an active member of 12 differ-

Their victory By Effie Caloutas Upwey South Primary School’s volleyball teams have won a swag of medals in the inaugural Volleyball Victoria Primary Schools Cup. Upwey’s Grade 5/6 boys, Grade 3/4 girls and Grade 3/4 boys took gold, while the Grade 5/6 girls took home silver. Volleyball coach and PE teacher at Upwey Tecoma Primary School, Steve Hall, says he is proud of the students’ achievements. “We should all be very proud of our volleyballers,” he said. “Not only did they present a shining example of what can be achieved when everyone works as a team, supports each other and tries their best, but their behaviour supporting their
team-mates off the court and their general sportsmanship were equally impressive.” Upwey’s students started in a round robin tournament, where each team played and won challenging round robin matches against top quality teams from around Victoria including Billanook. The teams went straight through to the semi-finals and then into the grand final where all teams came home with a trophy cabinet full of medals. Mr Hall says it was great to see the family and friends of the students supporting the teams. “No team can be successful without a great deal of support, so a big thankyou,” he said.

The muchloved brigade’s Centenary Festival Committee is in the middle of planning a fitting tribute, which will take place throughout the weekend of February 24 and 25. Just some of the activities planned to date include a fire vehicle procession and, potentially, a vintage aircraft fly-over. To help mark the occasion, festival committee member and former brigade captain Peter Marke is calling on the community to provide any memorabilia that could go towards the many historical items that will go on display. Mr Marke hoped the community would embrace the event. “We are hopeful that our proposed activities will complement the already successful annual billy cart race event on the Sunday and, together with our events, Upwey will feature a major celebration weekend,” he said. Also in the pipeline is a commemorative centenary book, which is being written by local historian Arthur Winzenried. The Upwey brigade has been at the coalface of many of the significant fires in the region, both directly fighting fires and providing support for nearby brigades and their volunteers. Just one of many examples is the 1997 fire that swept up to Ferny Creek and Sassafras. In that incident, three lives were lost, 45 houses destroyed and many more damaged. Though, there are countless stories of skill and bravery in the face of adversity. For more details, or to donate memorabilia items for the centenary, contact Peter Marke on 0427 037 839.
By Derek Schlennstedt Councillors at the Yarra Ranges Council meeting on 27 November moved to support the centenary of the Upwey Fire Brigade. That support will come in the form of a $5000 sponsorship grant for the celebration of the Upwey CFA’s 100th year of operation. Celebrations are planned for the weekend of Saturday, 24 February, which will coincide with the Upwey Billy Cart Festival. Commemorations include the publishing of a book, participating in the billy cart festival, and open house and reception. Lyster Ward councillor, Mike Clarke, supported the proposal for the sponsorship of $5000 and said that Upwey CFA crew were an enduring part of the hills community and deserved to be recognised for their work.

Ben’s beard goes away for the healthiest of causes By Peter Douglas One of the hills’ most recognisable beards is no more, with Emerald SES Unit Controller Ben Owen braving a big shave, all in the name of men’s health. Fulfilling the ‘man-scaping’ duties was none other than men’s health advocate and Gembrook MP Brad Battin. The local MP joined in many supporters of the Emerald SES to witness the occasion, with Mr Owen saying there was an important message to share. Mr Owen’s own father was diagnosed with prostate cancer, but got on to it early and now has a clean bill of health. “It hits everybody in some way or another, men’s health. So if you can take anything away from this ... encourage your dads, or your hus-

Emerald Secondary College has announced a partnership with Born to Soar, which will see the establishment of a new Centre for Gifted and Talented Education. To start in term one of 2018, and located at the school, the initiative aims to support students in their academic endeavours. The partnership includes numerous courses aligned to the Australian curriculum, initially offering a pre-secondary schooling Year 5 and 6 Entersoar program. This collaboration will allow Emerald to become the first secondary school in Victoria to utilise the experience of Born to Soar to develop one-day gifted education courses for Years 7 to 10. College principal Jodie Doble said it was an exciting period for the school. “Emerald Secondary College is very excited to be able to offer students in our area an opportunity to be a part of this gifted and talented educational opportunity,” she said. “The association with Born to Soar will allow Emerald Secondary College to expand our successful extra curriculum programs for the benefit of all participating highly able students in reaching their full potential.” According to Born to Soar, Emerald Secondary College has a strong history of academic success, with a high proportion of students being accepted into tertiary institutions. The ‘One Day School’ located at Emerald Secondary College will shortly open for enrolments for term one. Boarn to Soar Chief Executive Officer, Angus Giles, said this partnership underlined the trust between the new parties. “In addition to our courses, Born to Soar will be delivering valuable professional development in gifted education to the Emerald Secondary College in order to build on their successful teaching foundation within the school,” he said. Meanwhile, the college will be included on the www.giftedschools.education website. This initiative offers support to parents who are searching for schools that cater for gifted and talented students in their area.

Expert help for needy feet Feet are vital for mobility and balance, they are the basis of most of physical activities, so it’s no wonder problems and pain are common. Heel, arch, ankle and knee pain are the most common, affecting both children and adults. Left untreated these types of conditions can have a significant impact on your activities and mobility. However, as Wantirna’s Foot and Leg Pain Clinic’s musculoskeletal podiatrist Tim Kirwan explained, with the correct diagnosis and treatment, most foot and leg conditions are quite easily managed. “People often endure foot and leg pain and concerns for far too long, often because they are misdiagnosed and so receive inappropriate treatment or because they simply don’t know who to go to for effective treatment,” Mr Kirwan said. “This is really concerning and unnecessary because most foot and leg conditions can be easily overcome, thanks to the latest medical research and treatments.” While there are many doctors and health professional’s available right across Victoria, Mr Kirwan said that one of the issues facing patients is deciding who to go to for specific problems. “At Foot and Leg Pain Clinics we see so many people who’ve previously been to see multiple health practitioners without having found a long-term solution,” Mr Kirwan said. “This can be extremely frustrating for the sufferer and can lead to problems progressing further than they need to. “If you suffer any foot, leg, knee or hip pain, regardless of age, you should always seek ad-

It’s all for the community
The Emerald Market is an Emerald Community House initiative and operates to support and benefit the community.

A vibrant and colourful event, the Emerald Market features an abundance of locally made products and home-grown produce right in the centre of town. Throughout the market visitors can expect to find a variety of goods including preserves, cakes, hot food stalls, local specialties, vegetables and plants, jewellery, clothing, food, lifestyle products and massage stalls. But as Emerald Community House promotions and program co-ordinator Phil Byers explained, shopping at markets can not only provide delicious produce and beautiful gifts, but also assist the local community. “Local markets benefit your personal finances and the local economy,” Phil said. “(So-called) 'fresh’ produce at supermarkets can take weeks to get to you, but fresh producers at local markets often pick it that morning. And it’s often cheaper because they don’t have to charge for transport and intermediaries. “When buying from supermarkets, profits go to large corporations thousands of kilometres away and only a fraction goes to producers. When you buy directly from local producers they get 100 per cent of the profit. They reinvest much of this into their local economy, so local markets actually benefit local shopkeepers and service providers as well.” Emerald Community Market takes place on the third Sunday of each month all year around, unless cancelled due to severe, dangerous weather. The January market will include a Solar Expo courtesy of Dandenong Ranges Renewable Energy Association. Visitors are invited to head along to taste a cake baked in a solar oven and discover what else is possible using the energy produced by the sun. The Emerald Market is located at Emerald Marketplace on Kilvington Drive in Emerald. For more information, visit www.emeraldcommunityhouse.org.au.

Designed for women to learn cricket skills in an informal setting, the program will consist of four Tuesday evening sessions held at Lilydale’s Melba Park. Yarra Ranges Council Director of Social and Economic Development Ali Wastie, says the cricket sessions will enable women to build their social skills while staying physically active. “VicHealth has identified that regular physical activity helps people to have better mental health and social connections, along with more energy and health benefits,” Ms Wastie said. Nomination for radio prize By Effie Caloutas

The AFL Yarra Ranges Football Show has received a nomination for AFL Community-Best Radio Football Show. Hosted by Warburton Millgrove’s Liam Barnard, and co-hosted by Sports Media graduate Effie Caloutas, the show will come up against high-profile shows such as The Wash-Up K rock 95.5, Live Mixx FM, Under The Pump 2017 Fresh and FMEDFL Tonight Essendon District Football League. Producer of the show, Rodney Ball, says he is excited about being a part of the team nominated for Best Radio Football Show, and believes it would be nice if the show was able to win the award. “It’s exciting. All the work we have done in the past six months has been recognised by the AFL on a state level,” he said. “It would be nice to be receiving the chocolates on this occasion.” Ball says he has enjoyed being a part of the program for the past six months and meeting
It’s a Wonder all right Wonder (PG) Starring: Jacob Tremblay, Julia Roberts, Owen Wilson Wonder is a charming and engrossing (if slightly disjointed) family drama. After being home-schooled his entire life, August 'Auggie’ Pullman (Jacob Tremblay), a bright young boy with a facial deformity, must endure his first year of school. Wonder is a wholesome and deeply authentic film with natural performances, lavish cinematography and delightful visual gags symbolising Auggie’s active imagination. It’s deeply gratifying to watch Auggie find friends, gain confidence and triumph over other challenges, and the film illustrates how everyone has trouble fitting in at school. Wonder is refreshingly even-handed in its portrayal of Auggie’s life and condition. Auggie’s precocious, cheerful genius makes him instantly endearing, but the film openly

diverse personalities from the Yarra Valley. “I like the stories, the people and the characters in the Yarra Valley, as well as pushing the buttons to add humour to the program,” he said. Host Liam Barnard says it is great feeling to be a part of the team this year and speaking to all the best players in the valley. “It’s great to get a nomination. After all the time we put in on Friday nights it is good to be awarded with the nomination. It is great for the team,“ he said. “Working with Rodney and Effie is great fun. “Also, speaking to all the best players in the competition is also enjoyable for me because I love to talk about football in the valley.” The enthusiastic radio host is backing the show to win the award come Friday. “I think with Rodney’s work behind the desk we have a chance because of his professionalism.” The winner of the award will be announced at a special luncheon at Ikon Park on Friday 8 December.

acknowledges the drawbacks his condition means for his family, including his mother Julia (Julia Roberts) putting her academic life on hold to care for him and his older sister Olivia (Izabela Vidovic) being deprived of attention. Having received such intense care throughout his life, Auggie now gradually learns to be more selfless, just as the kids around him steadily drop their own prejudices. As such, Wonder has solid internal and external conflicts. The only problems with Wonder are some jarring shifts in perspective and a somewhat overlong run-time. Friendships are restored and bullies are redeemed by about two-thirds of the way through, but the movie keeps going (although Olivia’s theatre sub-plot is beautiful). Wonder is an uplifting film with quirky visual style and great character development. - Seth Hynes mailcommunity.com.au

The Cuckoo’s rich history A hills curiosity with a rich history, The Cuckoo is a traditional Bavarian restaurant. It was pioneered by Willi and Karin Koeppen. As The Cuckoo history goes, the once-modest refreshment stop was named after Karin heard the sound of a cuckoo calling during the night. Nowadays, The Cuckoo seats 450 people in three separate dining rooms and is renowned for its smorgasbords. And as assistant manager Simone Gordon explained, with a warm, ambient atmosphere, The Cuckoo advocates family togetherness and does its best to provide an experience where people forget their troubles and have fun. “We are a strong, generational restaurant that is tried and tested over many years,” Simone said. “We have the winning combination of family, fun and audience participation, which creates the magic that attracts people again and again.” Drawing visitors from all over the globe, The Cuckoo combines excellent service and an all-you-can-eat policy for all food buffets, with traditional Bavarian entertainment. “We offer value for money where you can eat as much as you want while enjoying the music and floor show,” Simone said. “But our focus is to combine being a part of people’s happy memories ... we want to create experiences where customers feel compelled to come back and experience the magic.” The Cuckoo Restaurant is located at 508 Mount Dandenong Tourist Road in Olinda. The local icon is a great place to consider over the Christmas period, too. For more information, phone (03) 9751 1003 or visit www.cuckoorestaurant.com.au.

PROPERTY NEWS
AN IMPRESSIVE RESULT FOR AN IMPRESSIVE PROPERTY - THE TOP END OF THE MARKET LOCATED at the highest point in Narre Warren East and at the very high end of the property market for the area, this amazing 21-acre property has just been sold for an impressive price by MRE Property Marketing. “We knew the property was unlikely to be purchased for the home alone, so we needed to focus on the quality of the land, and make it stand out from all others to achieve a sale at that kind of price point,” agent Michael Licciardi said. “Right from the get go, Michael’s focus was 100 per cent on the marketing of the property and where we could find the niche in the market that was looking for my type of property. Throughout the campaign Michael kept me informed of all feedback from potential purchasers, and I always felt he was being 100 per cent honest with me, which is rare," vendor Alan said. “With persistence he managed to achieve an excellent sale for me, in the most professional manner possible. I will be recommending Michael and MRE Property Marketing to all my friends, as was done to me. “Thanks again Michael for all your help. Cheers Alan.” So if you have a property to sell and are seeking a personalised, professional real estate service, and don’t want to feel like “just another number” through one of the large real estate firms, give the guys at MRE Property Marketing a call on 9756 6011 or stop in at their office for a chat at 59a Main Road, Monbulk. ●

“Glenview” Parklike rural holding only minutes to town
Retirement Living without the “Tannochbrae” - sitting in the retirement village & an income!!! Northern Sun!
Located on a seales no thru road, “Glenview” offers the rural lifestyle seeker the best of both worlds. Only minutes to town, with the peace and tranquillity only acreage can offer. Surrounded by magical gardens, the generous family home offers loads of space for the family to spread out over many separate living zones, as well as some lovely character features such as high ceilings with some ornate plasterwork, beautiful hardwood floorboards and a stone surround fireplace. Outside there is a generous covered timber deck for year round entertaining and lovely outlook over the magnificent garden. Add to this loads of shedding, parking area and a beautiful circular tree lined driveway. Did I hear you say WATER. Try 170,000 litres of storage plus a dam of some 2700m2 PLUS a bore !!!! If living the rural lifestyle is your aim, but you aren’t prepared to compromise on the inconvenience and isolation which comes with it, then you must inspect “Glenview”
If you are nearing that age or would prefer to plan ahead because you are aware how few properties in the Dandenongs are suitable (flat & close to shops) for retirement living, then seize this opportunity and take control of your future. This genuinely rare property is 2 units in one! One end of the building houses a larger 2 bedroom + study (or 2nd living area) unit with double bedrooms and also received a renovation by the owner approx 15 years ago when she moved in. The larger unit benefits from a lock up garage with remote door and internal access. The second unit at the other end of the building is a smaller 2 bedroom with its own driveway and yard. The best part of all is it is a mere 83m level walk to the Shops!!! Thats right 83 metres, some people’s letterbox is further to walk than that! With both units separately metered, separate driveways off different roads and completely separate garden areas this property is the perfect place to retire in the Dandenongs and provide yourself with an income all at the same time! If you are planning to invest in the short term and move in later, you will be happy to know you will reap a very healthy rent of approximately $37000 to $40,000 p.a (1 tenant already in occupation). Find another one like this, we challenge you!
Facing almost due North on approx 1.5 acres with views over The Patch valley, “Tannochbrae” is a property suited to those that recognise the foundation of good house design, orientation! As is with good design, the home’s living areas all face north and boast views from every window. The bedrooms and utility rooms are located on the south side of the home, perfect for those lazy Sunday’s when you just want to sleep in without being blinded by the sun! The home itself comprises 4 bedrooms, ensuite to the master, Study or formal dining, 3 living zones, ducted heating, split system cooling (x3), solar power (with generator plug), wood heater to lounge, polished floors and plenty of space for the entire family. Outside dad will love the asphalt driveway to his separate “shed” and a second shed for mowers/motorbikes etc. Mum will love that she can pull up into the carport or garage attached to the house with everyone in the car and get to the front door without getting wet! For a more healthy family lifestyle visit “Tannochbrae” this weekend.

Friday grand final planned By Peter Douglas AFL Yarra Ranges is set to cash-in on the AFL grand final long weekend, revealing the Division 1 grand finalists in 2018 will play on the Friday public holiday. In an attempt to address a decline in grand final attendances, AFL Yarra Ranges will become one of the first leagues in Victoria to move away from the traditional Saturday afternoon timeslot. The league failed to maintain a strong attendance this year for the league’s premier match, played out between Olinda Ferny Creek and Woori Yallock, with the league citing the popularity of the AFL preliminary final and other local grand finals held in the region. AFL Yarra Ranges general manager Aaron Bailey said the move showed the league was being pro-active in its attempt to draw bigger crowds. Mr Bailey hopes the change will see the league’s showpiece clash become a major event for the Yarra Ranges region. “We want to make the AFL Yarra Ranges grand finals a key event on the football calendar in the eastern region; the move to the Friday public holiday is designed to create a showcase of our premier competitions,” he said. “In 2017, we saw a decline in our grand final attendances through a contribution of factors, including the AFL preliminary final and other local grand finals in our region. “Given the AFL Yarra Ranges is a progressive organisation ... the opportunity is there to be the first competition to trial this. The commission and staff see this as a meaningful move for 2018.” Mr Bailey said the change aims to create opportunities for more of the football and netball communities to be available to attend. In 2018, the grand final will be held on Friday 28 September. This season, Olinda Ferny Creek defeated Woori Yallock in the Division 1 grand final, claiming its first premiership in the top division, winning 18.17 (125) to 3.6 (24). Meanwhile, the Division 2 grand finals will take place the weekend before, with this year’s decider to be played on Sunday 23 September. All Division 1 finals will take place on Saturday (except the grand final), while all Division 2 finals will be played on Sundays, including the grand final. In announcing the 2018 fixture, Mr Bailey said the Worksafe Community Championships will be held on 19 May, with AFL Yarra Ranges taking on South East Football Netball League. The splitting of senior divisions’ final rounds will again occur on the weekend, with the AFL Victoria Community Cup (Country versus Metro) to be played, providing all Division 1 clubs with a bye.

Club marking 125 years By Peter Douglas One of the oldest sporting clubs in the hills is preparing to celebrate its biggest milestone to date. Emerald Cricket Club will celebrate 125 years in 2018 and will hold a commemorative match against traditional rivals Upper Beaconsfield on Saturday 20 January, the date of the club’s inception. Some entertaining cricket and various activities are planned for the big day. Past players, administrators and supporters can roll up from 3.30pm and catch up with old friends and team-mates. Former president and club stalwart, Brad Wynd, said it was a great club to be around and the community had embraced it over many years. “Although we haven’t been hugely successful, in terms of winning premierships, we’ve always had no trouble fielding sides,” he said. “Presently, we have four senior teams, oneday teams, six junior teams, a Milo cricket program and veterans’ teams.” mailcommunity.com.au
The club is on the look-out for more memorabilia. 175729
From left, Gary Santini (life member), Kris Strong (president) and Allan Chandler (life member) with a 1949 team picture, Grand Final balls from '46-'47, '47-'48, '48-'49 and team caps. 175729
Mr Wyne, who started with the club around 1981, said it was the people that made it a great club, which was why people stuck around and often returned to the club. Emerald Cricket Club moved into the West Gippsland Cricket Association in 1997, which Mr Wynd said had helped the club flourish off the field.
He also paid tribute to stalwart Alan Chandler, who helped to provide the land for their home ground, Chandler Reserve. Mr Chandler still drops in most weeks to see the how the club is faring. While Emerald is finding the going tough in A Grade this season, the one-day team has re-
corded four victories and sits third on the ladder. The club is on the look-out for anyone who can provide memorabilia for the day, such as old photographs or club caps. Anyone with memorabilia, or who would like more information, can email bradleywynd@gmail.com. Tuesday, 5 December, 2017

Rain washes it out For the second round in succession, play has been abandoned on day two of Round 6 due to weather. Rain was persistent around the area across the Friday and Saturday, leaving most grounds unable to conclude the current matches in progress. In Norm Reeves Shield, Knoxfield leads proceedings from The Basin and Ferntree Gully, with Upper Ferntree Gully in close proximity. Knox Gardens heads up the chasing pack with Belgrave, Upwey, Eildon Park, Mountain Gate and Johnson Park completing the tight competition. Decoite Shield sees Ferntree Gully Foot-
ballers and Monbulk both undefeated, with South Belgrave and Rowville fighting for third and fourth place respectively. Lysterfield is within striking distance of breaking into the four, while Olinda, St John’s Tecoma and Knoxfield round out the field. Meanwhile, congratulations to Jake Sherriff (The Basin) and Jack Taylor (Knoxfield) who have both been selected in the VCCL squad for the upcoming 2018 Australian Country Cricket Championships. The team will play five Twenty20 and five one-day matches against last year’s overall winners Queensland, NSW, South Australia, Western Australia and East Asia Pacific.
Victoria finished runners-up to NSW in the one-day matches last season but struggled in the Twenty20 section, finishing fifth, ahead of Western Australia. The ACCC will be held in Geraldton between 3-14 January.
Mount Evelyn ladder leaders in cricket MOUNT EVELYN CRICKET With persistent rain putting a halt on all cricket this weekend, it has left local cricket fans pondering what has happened thus far this season. Mount Evelyn sits atop the DJ Strachan ladder in the YVCA, with just one loss thus far. The Mounters have been consistent with both bat and ball; and without dominating their opposition, they have chalked up the wins. With the bat, their top three - Daniel Giblin (329 runs), Jesse Fraser (269 runs) and Gareth Fraser - have led from the front, consistently giving their team a solid start. The opening partnership of Giblin and Jesse Fraser are combining for an average partnership of 55 runs which puts the pressure back on their opponents from the beginning. This has led to consistent scores where their bowlers have combined to keep their op-
ponents contained without any standouts. Their loss came to their grand final nemesis Warburton-Millgrove, continuing their hold on contests between the two teams, a slight concern for the Mount Evelyn hierarchy. Perennial finalists, the Mounters will again be around the mark, the question will be on whether their big guns can fire at the pointy end of the season. Monbulk 2 took on neighbours UpweyTecoma and won by 4 shots 68 to 64. The winning rinks were Dick Coppin by 14 shots and Graeme Goller by 5 shots. Eric Furby went down by 15 shots. Kasey clinches on last lap By Dean Thompson
A Grade Junior Sedan winner Kasey Garlick from Lilydale. the outside and drove around the two of them and came off with speed out of turn four and raced to the line to win by just 0.316 of a second from Cornwall, Gorski, Harris and Ally Morrison. Garlick on her way recording a new one lap track record for Juniors of 22.674. Also competing was the Street Stocks with a handful of cars, Collin Tate ran particularly strong through the evening and recorded a win in the feature from Wayne Sheerman and Lee Beach. The next meeting at Alexandra is 9 December, with a big Holden versus Ford Street Stock feature set to attract 40 cars to compete, another event not to be missed especially with the summer closure of Alexandra Speedway following and the club re-opening in March.

Alexandra Speedway played host to Victoria’s best Sports Sedan racers on Saturday 25 November with almost 30 competitors arriving to do battle in the quest to win the Sports Sedan Rumble. Later in the night, it was Alexandra member Damien Miller who went on to win the big feature while Lilydale youngster Kasey Garlick made a last lap outside pass around two cars to take the win in one of two Junior Sedan finals. Nine qualifying heat races for the Sports Sedans began with local Alexandra resident Luke Fallon taking the win in the very first event of the day. Leigh Bourke, Brad Warren, Miller, Matt Nelson, Steve Kershaw, then Brad Warren again, Nelson with a record one lap circuit of Alexandra of 20.553 and Miller all doubled up with wins in the final round. A handful of competitors had crashes or break downs along the way and missed or didn’t finish the feature event. Morris Ahearn had a big crash in the first round and his meeting was finished right there and then with front end damage and a possible hurt engine that the team didn’t not to risk. Marcus Reddecliffe, Nathan Shortis and Shane Kruger young drivers working their way up the ranks in the class and seasoned campaigner Lucas Conder also had mechanical issues finishing their nights. In the final Nelson, Warren and then Miller all had their moments to shine, with Miller passing Warren for the lead with around nine laps to go. Miller stretched his advantage to some distance and went on to record the win ahead of Warren, Fallon, Kershaw, Bourke, Dale Smith, Andrew Jordan, Steve Akil and Nathan O’Brien. The Junior Sedan category this season is separated into B Grade Developing and A Grade groups. In the B Grade, Todd Moule from Pakenham took control of the car his sister Jade drove all last season and recorded a half lap victory ahead of Rhys Meakins, Breanna Simpson, Bradin Claridge and Chloe Sheerman. Moule had lapped Sheerman and was chasing down Claridge when the race finished. Kilmore’s Aaron Meakins set a new eight lap race record as he went on to defeat visiting driver Tim Hutchinson and Victorian Champion Warrick Howie, Liam Powell and Cory Horter. Meakins won by a few seconds over Hutchinson. In the A Grade Juniors, the eight lap final was a terrific battle between Ricky Cornwall, Tim Gorski and earlier in the race Ryan Harris from Bega in New South Wales and Garlick. Harris was issued a rear of field penalty by the Stewards and had to fight through the field at a re-start and Garlick started to reel in Cornwall and Gorski ahead of her. On the very last lap, on the outside of the leaders, Cornwall and Gorski, Garlick went to
