Flooding was felt By Derek Schlennstedt and Peter Douglas While it wasn’t the rainfall of epic proportions as predicted, the Yarra Valley region did experience a significant deluge, resulting in disruption to services and events. Over the predicted high danger period, from Friday 1 December through to Sunday 3 December, a combined 82.2mm of rain was recorded at the Yarra Glen weather station, according to the Bureau of Meteorology. This three-day rainfall figure eclipsed the 2017 November rainfall at the station of 68.4mm. The highest daily rainfall figure was also recorded for 2017, with 50mm lashing the region on the Saturday, more than the 35mm recorded on February this year. The Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe weather warning and flood watch for most parts of Victoria on Friday 1 December, warning of flash flooding, disruptions to main traffic routes, inundations of buildings and impacts to basic services such as public transport, sewerage, and power and water supplies. A moderate flood warning was also issued for Yarra River in the Watts River catchment, which received rainfall averaging about 102mm since 9am Saturday. Lilydale SES Deputy Unit Controller, Shaun Caulfield, said the region had heeded the warnings and prepared well, taking advantage of sandbag collection points at Healesville and Lilydale. But Mr Caulfield said it was a typically busy time for the unit, with over 60 call-outs. “We had 63 calls for assistance, most of those were for either leaking roofs or water coming into the building through the gutters we had quite a lot of trees over roads and onto buildings,” he said. In Healesville, unit controller Geoff Stott said they had a number of streets flooded and SES member Olivia Madigan said much of that flooding came on the Sunday. “Had quite a bit of flooding and a few trees across road,” Mr Stott said. “The main flooding was on the Saturday night around houses - a lot of people had been

Storms lashed the Yarra Valley over the weekend, and while it wasn’t the deluge emergency services anticipated, it was still enough to cause a number of areas to flood. Picture: YARRA RANGES COUNCIL working through the day to get rid of it and when the heavier rains came they needed help with sandbags,” Ms Madigan said. Between Healesville and Lilydale SES over 3000 sandbags were given out, though there were still reports of floods on Beenak Road in Wandin North, Melba Highway between Coldstream and Yering, and on River Street in Healesville. Ms Madigan said that despite signs warning motorists to not enter flood waters, they still had several people attempting to drive through them. “There was a lot of debris in the water around River Street - we pulled out a gas bottle - people driving through it wouldn’t know

what they were driving over,” she said. Yarra Ranges Tourism noted many events were cancelled over the weekend which, it said, would impact on local operators. On Sunday, Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews was forced to defend emergency warnings as he visited what was meant to be the flood’s epicentre, in North-East Victoria. Mr Andrews told other media the Bureau of Meteorology could only use the data they had available, but implied they could be working on their phrasing. “We can look back on whether some comments were words I would have used, but ultimately the bureau and emergency services, myself included, we’ve been very clear with the

Victorian community,” he said. “The total of rainfall was absolutely accurate - the intensity of it was different and the exact location of it was a bit different, that’s something we all should be happy about.” Yarra Ranges Council chief executive officer, Glenn Patterson, had also encouraged residents to heed the warnings issued and steer clear of floodwaters. Council said residents whose houses suffered major structural damage should contact their insurer and the relevant council. Council added if the house had suffered major damage, council would complete a building assessment and provide advice on whether the house was habitable.

Plea to remove rubbish By Derek Schlennstedt A fire in the Yarra Glen area on 23 November has prompted emergency services to remind residents to clean-up their properties, and remove any rubbish. Yarra Glen CFA Captain Bill Boyd said crews had to attend a grass fire which had the potential to become much more serious. Though, Captain Boyd said that was the least of their concerns, when, upon arrival, they found various items of rubbish strewn over the property and noticed the smell of burning plastic in the air. He said something needed to be done about the location which he described as be-

coming a “tip”. “We attended a fire last week ... what was concerning is what we found under the grass,” Captain Boyd said. “All the rubbish we didn’t know about plastics and flammable materials, which create toxic fumes and can affect our firefighters’ health and the health of the community,” he said. “When you get called to a paddock that is supposedly just a grass fire, and you turn up and it appears to be a tip, it makes it very difficult.” Eight CFA appliances, including trucks from Yarra Glen, Dixons Creek, Healesville and

Coldstream, were called to the incident. It is alleged that the occupier of the property in Yarra Glen was burning off, when a gust of wind blew embers from the fire onto the grass and consequently caused a fire that resulted in two acres of the farm property being burnt. Though the fire was easy to get under control, Captain Boyd said it could have quite easily escalated, and noted the proximity of the property which he said had large piles of rubbish to the Yarra River-only a few metres away. “We’re more concerned about what we don’t know what’s in there when we turn up- we had potentially 20 odd firefighters and who knows

Heartbreak as disappearance resolved

what risk they’ve faced here ... a lung full of smoke from plastics and toxins?” he said. “We also had reports come in of people from the school, who could smell the plastic burning- that’s a kilometre away.” Captain Boyd appealed to property owners to follow the proper procedures when burning off, including contingency plans, and access to a water source as well as registering their burnoffs on the CFA website. “We’re appealing to people to clean their properties up, but in this case it appears it’s falling on deaf ears,” he said. Yarra Glen crash

The week-long search for Badger Creek man Matthew Fitzpatrick has ended with heartbreak for his family and many friends. Matty’s body was found by a search team on Sunday morning, 3 December, on the Lower Link Trail in Mt Stirling. Matty, 33, left Badger Creek early on Saturday morning, 25 November, to go horse riding in the High Country. An intensive search was mounted when he did not make contact and intensified when his car was found on Tuesday morning in Mount Sterling. The 33-year-old grew up in Healesville, played football, cricket and bowls, and his disappearance drew hundreds of messages of support and concern for him and his family on a Help Find Matthew Fitzpatrick Facebook page set up by the family. Sadly, on Sunday morning the family confirmed their worst fears. Matty’s dad John said the horse riding venture was a gift that he was looking forward to, but didn’t get the chance to enjoy. They believe he got lost, perhaps trying to find the horse trail. The family, John, his mother Tiss, sisters Tam and Jacki and brother Andrew, are devastated at the loss of their beautiful son and brother, and have thanked all those who helped in the search and supported them over the past week. “We wish to sincerely thank all who gave so generously of their time and hearts during the search for our beautiful Matthew,” they wrote on Monday in a letter to the Mail. “Although the search ended in tragedy, we shall never forget the love and support that we received, and as a family we will be forever grateful. “It was due to the enormous effort of family and friends that we could bring our boy home. "We would also like to thank the owners of the Merrigig Motor Inn who went above and beyond in their support for us as a whole. “We especially would like to thank the Healesville community for their overwhelming support and community spirit.” Among many messages of condolence to

Just after 1pm on Friday 1 December, an 18-year-old Healesville man had a lucky escape when he lost control of the vehicle he was driving along the Healesville-Yarra Glen Road in Yarra Glen. Yarra Glen Sergeant Richard Coulson said the vehicle passed onto the wrong side of the road and rolled twice before colliding with a fence. As a result of the collision, the youth received minor injuries and was conveyed to Maroondah Hospital for observation. Sergeant Coulson reminded motorists to ensure that they drive to the weather conditions.

Silly season warning Acting Sergeant Fereday of Lilydale police is urging drivers to consider alternative transport when planning on having a celebratory drink this festive season. Over the month of November, Lilydale Uniform members conducted in excess of 1200 preliminary breath tests. As a result, eight drivers were over the legal limit, and they will face prosecution, loss of licence and the associated consequences. There were also another six drivers processed for driving while suspended or disqualified. Lilydale police are committed to reducing road trauma within the Lilydale Response Zone, and drivers should expect to be breathtested at any hour of the day in the lead-up to Christmas. "At the end of the day, nobody wants an empty chair at the table this festive season, and if we can achieve that, it would be a great result for all,"Sergeany Fereday said.

Tributes have poured in for Matty Fitzpatrick. the family, Matty has been remembered as “a kind and friendly person who always had time for people”. “You were a great guy, always so friendly

THE LOWDOWN Q&A

with Christine Cafarella-Pearce, Healesville artist.

What is something people don’t know about you? I’m passionate about God and an active member of Liberty Family Church. What was your most memorable moment? When my granddaughter had got a new heart. Ten years on, she is a budding little artist herself, an athlete and has a wonderful attitude to life. What would your final meal be? My favourite - my mum’s or dad’s traditional Sicilian spaghetti bolognaise and meatballs. What event, past, present or future, would you like to witness? I would like to see an event, truly multicultural in heart and spirit, where every culture was shared and embraced by all cultures - all pulling together.

What is your favourite television show? Football. I’m an Essendon supporter, but I love anything to do with sport. What is your favourite book? The Bible; it’s the most read book. What six guests, dead or alive, would you invite to a dinner party? My family. What was your first or best art exhibition? I think my first, Palettes and Pals at the Montrose Community Centre in the early 90s. I shared it with three artists and two potters, all friends. What are you working on right now? I’m a behind-the-scenes organiser for Healesville Community Carols, helping out where needed for the carols on Saturday, 16 December.

THREE ‌ Things Christmas

1

List it Make a list... and check it twice. It’s easy to be tempted by beautiful things once those Christmas carols start ringing in your head. List each person you want to buy for and how much you have to spend. Keep your receipts in case you need to return an item.

2

Avoid the credit card This is a bigee! Buying on credit card not only creates an illusion of having more money than you actually have, or can afford, with interest, it’s buying at a premium. A bargain bought on credit quickly becomes an expensive gift or indulgence. If you do fall into the credit card trap, think ahead and start a Christmas Club account so you’re not caught out again in 2018.

3

Factor in the extras It’s often not the big item gifts that blow the budget, but the ‘incidentals’. Have I got enough baubles for the Christmas Tree? Yes you have! Do I need enough party food for the entire street? No you don’t. Be realistic about what you need and don’t buy on impulse. But, for those things that you do need, Kris Kringles, Christmas donations, extras for the office or street party, make a list and cost it.

They’re the real bottlers By Wendy Williamson A red wine from Yarra Valley winery Oakridge Wines has taken top honours at this year’s National Wine Show of Australia Awards. On Friday November 24 Oakridge Wines’ 2015 Local Vineyard Series Shiraz, Oakridge Vineyard, was awarded Best Shiraz, Best Red Wine and then Champion Wine of Show at the National Wine Show of Australia Awards dinner at the National Arboretum of Canberra. “It’s fantastic,” said Oakridge Wines chief winemaker David Bicknell. “Shiraz is the most widely planted variety in the country, so for this wine to be chosen is a real achievement, particularly from a little area like the Yarra Valley.” The National Wine Show judges and celebrates the best Australian wines. All have qualified and won awards through regional and capital city wine shows across the country. Having its wine selected as Champion Wine of the Show was yet another industry accolade for Oakridge Wines in what has proved to be a hugely successful year for the local winery. Among the many industry awards it has collected in recent months are Most Successful Exhibitor Yarra Valley Wine Show and five gold medals at the Royal Melbourne Wine Awards. David Bicknell, who has the distinction of being named 2017 Gourmet Traveller Winemaker of the Year, commented: “Oakridge has celebrated its best year in wine in its 39-year history. The team is always looking at ways to improve in every aspect of our craft, so it is great to see this attention to detail and creativity reaping the rewards. It’s a very exciting time to be making wine in the Yarra Valley.” Oakridge Wines is a spectacular spread beside the Maroondah Highway at Coldstream. Visitors enjoy wine tasting in a stunning architect-designed building, where they can purchase the prize-winning wine and gaze out over the vineyards which produced it.

Help ’em to handle heat

Too much tolerance

We’ve put together some top tips for beating the heat. Have fresh, cold water available at all times; Ensure your pet has shade at all times or bring them inside into a cool room; Wipe your pet down with a cool, damp towel or leave wet towels out for them to lie on; Wet your dog with cool water several times throughout the day; Consider buying a wading pool for your dog; Place ice blocks in your pet’s water bowl; Place ice in a pillow case and place it near your pet’s bed; Consider having your dog clipped if their coat is long and thick; Never leave your pets in a vehicle on a hot day; Avoid exercising your pet between 10am4pm on hot days, wait until the weather cools even to go for a walk; Take note of the surface your pet is walking on, if it is too hot for your bare feet it is too hot for their paws; and Think about your pet’s skin, pink noses and pale coats may need to have extra sun protection, pet friendly sunscreens are a must. Keep your pet in mind when the mercury rises and you and your furry friends will have an enjoyable and stress-free summer.

Animal

· · · · · · · · · ·

aid Mark Menze Animal Aid CEO Make sure your pet can handle the heat. It is so important to be mindful of the summer heat and to prepare for your furry friend’s health during summer. Hot weather can be distressing for your whole family, especially the four-legged members. Whether pets are at home with you, relocated during high fire risk days or brought along on holidays, we need to be sure that our pets are able to handle the heat. When your pet is unable to maintain their normal body temperature on a hot day, they will experience heat stress. On all hot days, especially days of Severe, Extreme or Code Red fire danger, keep your pets as cool as possible. They will be relying on you to help them manage the heat. “In cases of severe heat stress or heat stroke, pets may stop panting and vomit. If this occurs consult a vet immediately. It’s important to keep your vet’s contact details on hand,” says Dr Carolyn Warburton.

Warburton, a ‘tourist town’, has developed a tolerance to selfish cyclists over the years. I am not aware of any being hit by cars, despite their ‘cavalier’ attitudes, which shows great tolerance and cautious driving by locals. The Della Girro Donna event last weekend (not the first and intended to continue) exceeded my tolerance, and the tolerance of many natives. Closing roads and promising an escort to residents who needed to get out for work or other reasons, but not providing a phone number to enable this, is very poor form. Riding three abreast in bunches in Warburton’s single lane main street is probably illegal and incredibly arrogant. Takings from businesses were down - locals could not get out due to road closures, tourism was impacted due to lack of parking.

It appears that on-site catering was provided, which means local food outlets were not being supported. Last year’s legacy was Donna Buang Road being left littered with energy drink bottles and cans. The straw that broke the camel’s back was the 6.30am to 7am Sunday commencement of the amplified broadcasting, which carries across the river and up the surrounding hills for kilometres. A surprise and unwelcome awakening for many locals. There is not inconsiderable cost to attend this event and one must wonder who benefits from this and at what cost to locals. I, for one, see it as an assault on the town, with no apparent benefits. Julie Gason, Warburton.

Every year HICCI send out 200 hampers to help those in need of some Christmas cheer and this year they’re calling on residents to help them fill those hampers. “We give out approximately 200 hampers every Christmas to people who might be doing it a bit tough and need a bit of Christmas cheer,” emergency services manager Sheree Lauman said. “Any Christmassy items ... food, non-perishables are better, we often get Christmas cakes, custard, chips, anything that’ll help make a nice Christmas meal for Christmas day.” HICCI is a network of Christian churches in the Healesville and Yarra Glen areas providing practical services and friendship to local community members and offering practical help and friendship to individuals and families in times of difficulty and crisis. HICCI executive officer Alison Gommers said that last year HICCI had 4730 occurrences in the 2016-’17 financial year where they helped individuals and families, with food parcels making up 1873 of those incidents. Ms Gommers urged anyone going Christmas shopping to spare a few dollars or buy a new toy. “We prefer to give new toys than secondhand ones, as it’s always nice for kids to have something new,” Ms Gommers said. Market beats rain By Derek Schlennstedt The storms may have postponed it, but the Warburton Valley’s Handmade Night Market has established itself as an enduring part of the Warburton township and will still go ahead. Now in its sixth year the event, changed to Friday, 15 December has become a popular Christmas celebration encompassing a community picnic with fresh food, information stalls and entertainment. This year’s market is shaping up to be the biggest so far, with a multitude of local groups coming on board to share the Christmas cheer and spirit. The Yarra Valley’s most creative and talented artisans pull out all the stops to stock the Waterwheel complex with an amazing range of unique, quality gifts for the night market including toys and jewellery to clothing, books by local authors and illustrators, cards, home decor, soap and candles. The emphasis is on quality and design, and the inspiration is to shop locally, Handmade organiser Suyin Chan said. The waterwheel deck will be bustling with all sorts of stalls, including food fund-raisers from Koha Community Cafe and Warburton Primary School. Most importantly though, this year’s night market will see two iconic Warburton markets come together to celebrate Christmas, with both the Handmade Night Market and Warburton Summer Produce Market sharing the waterwheel location, being held on the same night. There’s expected to be more than 40 stalls on the night with face-painting for the kids, and plenty of stalls to find the perfect trinket or treasure for Christmas gifts.

Best you’ve heard on air By Effie Caloutas The AFL Yarra Ranges Football Show has received a nomination for AFL Community-Best Radio Football Show. Hosted by Warburton Millgrove’s Liam Barnard, and co-hosted by sports media graduate Effie Caloutas, the show will come up against high-profile shows such as The Wash-Up K rock 95.5, Live Mixx FM, Under The Pump 2017 Fresh and FMEDFL Tonight Essendon District Football League. Producer of the show, Rodney Ball, says he is excited about being a part of the team nominated for Best Radio Football Show, and believes it would be nice if the show was able to win the award. “It’s exciting. All the work we have done in the past six months has been recognised by the AFL on a state level,” he said. “It would be nice to be receiving the chocolates on this occasion.” Ball says he has enjoyed being a part of the program for the past six months and meeting diverse personalities from the Yarra Valley. “I like the stories, the people and the characters in the Yarra Valley, as well as pushing the buttons to add humour to the program,” he said. Host Liam Barnard says it is great feeling to be a part of the team this year and speaking to all the best players in the valley.

Lucy Genate, Graeme Edwards, Liz Lucas, Kate Baker, Suyin Chan, Lana Emmerton, Lavinia McEwan and Rachel Hughes will all be taking part in this year's Homemade Night Market - the biggest one so far. The market is a wonderful opportunity to meet local artists and makers of Warburton Handmade in the shop, the gallery and on the deck, and to find those special items and gifts you wouldn’t find in the big chain stores down the line.

If you can’t make it on market night, pop in to the Waterwheel any day in the lead-up to Christmas. The night market will be open from 5pm to 9pm at the Waterwheel on Friday 15 December.

This ride was memorable By Derek Schlennstedt

Social with the bat Social cricket program ‘Social Sixes’ is teaching women basic cricket skills from 6-7pm on Tuesday nights until 12 December, thanks to a partnership between Cricket Victoria and Yarra Ranges Council. Designed for women to learn cricket skills in an informal setting, the program will consist

of four Tuesday evening sessions held at Lilydale’s Melba Park. Yarra Ranges Council Director of Social and Economic Development Ali Wastie, says the cricket sessions will enable women to build their social skills while staying physically active.

“VicHealth has identified that regular physical activity helps people to have better mental health and social connections, along with more energy and health benefits,” Ms Wastie said. All equipment is provided at the sessions, costing $10 per person. To register, visit www.socialsixes.com.au.

The family of Anne Jones has celebrated another successful year of running the annual Ride to Remember-Yarra Valley event, which took place on Sunday 19 November. Aiming to reach $25,000 for Alzheimer’s Australia Victoria, the family well surpassed that, raising over $26,000 since the ride's inception in 2013. Bryn Jones and Daughters Kylie and Kirsty started the ride on the first anniversary of Anne’s death in 2013 from Lewy Body disease - an illness that causes the degeneration of nerve cells in the brain. Each year the ride has become more popular and Kylie said that this year was also one of the biggest they’d had. “We are over the moon to tell you that we exceeded our fund-raising target and officially raised $5219 - this brings our total amount raised over five years to over $26,000,” she said. Despite a slow start to the registrations, 80 people took part in the ride including 18 children. The ride involves four separate distances along the picturesque Warburton trail, and Kirsty said it was great to see people of all ages taking part. “We were looking really slow to start with this year, but it all came to a rush in the end we had over 80 participants, including 18 children,” Kylie said. “Very pleased as we had the most children attending ever ... it was really great to see the kids getting involved with their parents.” Each year the ride is organised by Kylie and her family, though she said it also relied on residents and various local community groups and businesses who helped to make the ride possible via support and donations. Kylie said they were humbled to have received such support and said there was no doubt in her mind that next year’s ride would go ahead.

Rotary’s beautiful numbers By Derek Schlennstedt Students at Badger Creek Primary have received new maths equipment as part of a donation from the Healesville Rotary Club. With the help of various maths apparatus; from calculators and abacuses to a measuring wheel, no math equation will be too hard for the students to tackle. At the school assembly on Friday December 1, Principal Scott Crawford unveiled the table full of equipment and said that it was only a small taste of what else was to come, with more equipment to be donated from Healesville Rotary. “We have so much measurement, shape and maths gear for you all to use and it’s all thanks to Rotary,” Mr Crawford said at the assembly. “This is just a small taste of what we’ve got two more packs still to come.” The Mail spoke to Assistant Principal Sue Hartley who said the packs would help improve their applied maths program, which had recently undergone extensive changes and required better equipment. “We had limited material for the kids to use, and so we’ve gotten two kits for each applied maths area ... it’s really boosted our maths equipment,” Ms Hartley said.” “It’ll make lessons more hands-on and it will bring higher engagement for the applied maths program that includes measurement, shape, and space.” “We’ve been working hard on our maths program and have had great results in the students' growth and learning ... the maths equipment will enhance the program even more.” Graeme Chester, vice-president of Healesville said they were glad the maths paraphernalia component of a $3000 grant from Rotary would be put to good use, and improve the students' education.

THIS CHRISTMAS, YOUR DONATION CAN MAKE WISHES COME TRUE. For most, Christmas is a time for giving and celebrating with loved ones. But for around 105,000 Australians, including families and 17,000 children under 12, it’s a time when fulfilling even the simplest of wishes, like having food on the table or a place to call home, will be a struggle. Take Ollie and his mum, Sharon. All he wants for Christmas is to stop moving all the time and for his mum to finally be happy. When you donate to Vinnies, you’re making simple Christmas wishes like Ollie’s come true.

Healesville Sanctuary's newest addition finally poked his head up recently, just in time for the Sanctuary's newest exhibit opening.

Welcome to the family By Derek Schlennstedt Healesville Sanctuary has welcomed its newest member to its burgeoning koala family. The little male, born to mum Emily and dad Dindi is only seven months old and has only just begun to peek out from inside mum’s pouch. Born in April during a thunderstorm, keepers watched the jelly bean sized joey make its way to mum's warm and cosy pouch. “He was no bigger than a jelly bean; pink, hairless and tiny,” Amie Hindson, senior koala keeper at Healesville Sanctuary said. “We watched him make his way from the birth canal to the pouch completely unaided,

relying on his already well-developed senses of smell and touch and an innate sense of direction.” “Once inside the safety of the pouch, he attached himself to one of the two teats.” From then, we’ve been waiting and watching her pouch grow.” Since then there’s been very little movement, with the joey growing up almost completely within the warm confines of mum's pouch. Though only a few weeks ago the joey emerged from the pouch and keepers believe he should be riding upon his mother’s back in time for the opening of the new Kangaroo Country exhibit on 20 December.

Mellanie joins the team Having recently joined the Get Well Clinic team, Dr Mellanie Lloyd will work with her fellow GPs to continue to provide friendly and professional medical care and advice to local residents. Mellanie brings experience in family medicine, women’s health, children’s and adolescent health and a special interest in autism spectrum disorders which complements the existing special expertise offered at the clinic. Although having only been open for a year,

Get Well Clinic has attracted a strong following from clients in Healesville and surrounds. “I think that’s for a variety of reasons,” clinic practice manager Julie Grant said. “We present spacious and modern facilities, we’re friendly and helpful and our doctors are really up to date with their treatments. “But the main thing our clients are telling us is they notice how we really do care about their well-being. We’re proud of our ability to diagnose and manage complex medical problems, alongside providing medical care for the

Our doctors and nurses love working with the students.”

Open seven days a week, from 6am to 6pm, the bakery is in the perfect location on the Maroondah Highway in Healesville. It caters for groups of all sizes and offers a huge car park, capable of holding anything from motorbikes to caravans. While sitting outside, visitors to the bakery can enjoy great views of the mountains from the relaxing outdoor setting. The grassed area allows visitors to take in the beautiful park bridge, as well as making for easy access to the park. Inside, the bakery has a friendly and relaxing vibe. It boasts an open-seating plan, plenty of tables, a play area for kids and couches for the travel-weary. Kylie says the bakery sells a great range of products, including the classics that have made it so renowned in the area. “We sell various pies, our famous bee stings

and vanilla slice,” she said. “We also have an established range of gluten-free products. “We have something for all ages. “For the kids, we have zoomers and shortbread biscuits.” The bakery offers all-day breakfast, lunch, early dinner, vegetarian delights and catering for groups of all sizes. Perhaps it is the homemade touch that makes the pies so good, with pies proudly made by Beechworth Bakery employees. Among its many specialties is the bee sting - a sweet bun lightly spread with apricot jam, filled with the creamiest custard and topped with toffee almonds. It has proved a must-try for the many visitors to the region, who have flagged the bakery as a good stopping point as they make their way to Eildon or the alpine area, or as they tour wine regions.

A hills curiosity with a rich history, The Cuckoo is a traditional Bavarian restaurant. It was pioneered by Willi and Karin Koeppen. As The Cuckoo history goes, the once-modest refreshment stop was named after Karin heard the sound of a cuckoo calling during the night. Nowadays, The Cuckoo seats 450 people in three separate dining rooms and is renowned for its smorgasbords. And as assistant manager Simone Gordon explained, with a warm, ambient atmosphere, The Cuckoo advocates family togetherness and does its best to provide an experience where people forget their troubles and have fun. “We are a strong, generational restaurant that is tried and tested over many years,” Simone said. “We have the winning combination of fam-

ily, fun and audience participation, which creates the magic that attracts people again and again.” Drawing visitors from all over the globe, The Cuckoo combines excellent service and an all-you-can-eat policy for all food buffets, with traditional Bavarian entertainment. “We offer value for money where you can eat as much as you want while enjoying the music and floor show,” Simone said. “But our focus is to combine being a part of people’s happy memories ... we want to create experiences where customers feel compelled to come back and experience the magic.” The Cuckoo Restaurant is located at 508 Mount Dandenong Tourist Road in Olinda. The local icon is a great place to consider over the Christmas period, too. For more information, phone (03) 9751 1003 or visit www.cuckoorestaurant.com.au.

PROPERTY NEWS

REGIONS UP ON RENTAL INCOME IN the year to 30 September, new REIV data shows every property type in regional Victoria recorded a higher gross rental yield than in metropolitan Melbourne. Two-bedroom properties in regional Victoria delivered the strongest returns for investors, producing a gross rental yield of 5.1 per cent for units and 4.9 per cent for houses. For those considering investing, the yield reflects a property’s annual rent as a percentage of the purchase price with the ideal investment property combining a low purchase price and a high weekly rental. With a median house price of $120,000 and a weekly median rent of $193, twobedroom houses in Morwell recorded one of

the state’s highest returns at 8.3 per cent. This was followed by Wangaratta in Victoria’s north-east, where the same property type achieved a gross rental yield of 7.6 per cent. Strong returns for two-bedroom houses were also seen in Echuca (6.9 per cent), Mildura (6.8 per cent), Traralgon (6.7 per cent) and Wonthaggi (6.2 per cent). By comparison, in the sought-after Melbourne suburb of Albert Park, the gross rental yield was just 2.2 per cent on a twobedroom house because, despite a weekly median rental of $650, the $1,535,000 median price held down the yield. Meanwhile, three-bedroom houses also delivered solid returns for investors across

the state, at 4.7 per cent. Churchill produced the state’s highest rental returns for the typical family home, at 7.8 per cent, while Red Cliffs near Mildura also delivered a high yield of 7.6 per cent. Other towns recording high yields for three-bedroom houses include Myrtleford (7.5 per cent), Mooroopna (7.2 per cent), Stawell (6.7 per cent) and Horsham (6.5 per cent). While a high yield does not guarantee a property in a particular area will continue to perform well, it provides a useful guide for investors when deciding where and what type of property to buy. ENTERTAINMENT

Opportunity of art shown By Wendy Williamson TarraWarra Museum of Art continues to provide vital opportunities for important Australian artists to be showcased. Newly opened at the Yarra Valley gallery are two exciting exhibitions which share a landscape theme. ‘Rosemary Laing’ is an exhibition of the works of one of Australia’s most significant and internationally-renowned photo-based artists. Born in Brisbane and based in Sydney, La-

ing has worked with the photographic medium since the mid-1980s. The exhibition includes 28 large-scale Laing works selected from 10 series over a 30year period. The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalogue authored by Judy Annear, who writes: “How to make sense of what humanity does in and to their environment regardless of whether that environment appears to be natural or made? What is the spectrum, the temperature of that activity? Laing is an artist who grapples with these questions and how

to reflect and interpret the times in which she lives.” This exhibition, which is the first largescale showing of Laing’s work in Victoria, will be accompanied by an exhibition of works by one of Australia’s most important landscape artists, Fred Williams. ‘Fred Williams - 1974,’ curated by Anthony Fitzpatrick, highlights a significant year in which Williams explored a new method of painting and a new palette. “Beginning with the large-scale work ‘Lilydale Triptych/ 1974’ in the TarraWarra Mu-

seum of Art collection, this exhibition brings together several paintings from 1974, a period in which these new approaches coalesced and found full expression. Patrick McCaughey describes 1974 as ‘one of the most turbulent and productive years Williams had ever known’,” said the curator. Both exhibitions run until 11 February 2018. TarraWarra Museum of Art is open Tuesday to Sunday, 11am to 5pm at 311 Healesville-Yarra Glen Road, Healesville.

Get amongst a classical mix By Derek Schlennstedt

Join Orchestra Victoria at the Healesville Memo for a mix of classical songs.

It’s a Wonder all right Wonder (PG) Starring: Jacob Tremblay, Julia Roberts, Owen Wilson Wonder is a charming and engrossing (if slightly disjointed) family drama. After being home-schooled his entire life, August 'Auggie’ Pullman (Jacob Tremblay), a bright young boy with a facial deformity, must endure his first year of school. Wonder is a wholesome and deeply authentic film with natural performances, lavish cinematography and delightful visual gags symbolising Auggie’s active imagination. It’s deeply gratifying to watch Auggie find friends, gain confidence and triumph over other challenges, and the film illustrates how everyone has trouble fitting in at school. Wonder is refreshingly even-handed in its portrayal of Auggie’s life and condition. Auggie’s precocious, cheerful genius makes him instantly endearing, but the film openly mailcommunity.com.au

acknowledges the drawbacks his condition means for his family, including his mother Julia (Julia Roberts) putting her academic life on hold to care for him and his older sister Olivia (Izabela Vidovic) being deprived of attention. Having received such intense care throughout his life, Auggie now gradually learns to be more selfless, just as the kids around him steadily drop their own prejudices. As such, Wonder has solid internal and external conflicts. The only problems with Wonder are some jarring shifts in perspective and a somewhat overlong run-time. Friendships are restored and bullies are redeemed by about two-thirds of the way through, but the movie keeps going (although Olivia’s theatre sub-plot is beautiful). Wonder is an uplifting film with quirky visual style and great character development. - Seth Hynes

Join Orchestra Victoria to close out the year with a final concert in the Five on Fridays series at The Memo in Healesville. To capture the festive spirit of the holiday season, Orchestra Victoria’s Acting Concertmaster Roger Jonsson has curated a program of chamber music he says is sure to delight audiences no matter your age. “I think we have worked really hard, it’s a full crowd-pleaser - romantic tunes, it is a very broad mix,” Mr Jonsson said. The one-hour concert features a variety of classical melodies that cater to a broad range of ages. Piazzolla’s Winter, based on Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, produces vivid images of wild winters in Argentina, while Ralph Vaughn-Williams’ Piano Quintet in C Minor takes the audience through lyrical English landscapes. Back on local shores and the orchestra celebrates the favourite Australian drama The Doctor Blake Mysteries with its haunting and mysterious theme written by Melbournebased composer, Dale Cornelius, specially arranged for this performance. The reason I included the Dr Blake series is I like it and people that enjoy the series ... hopefully they can enjoy the concert and get an interest in classical music and explore it more." Mr Jonssonn said he had arranged and included music that would cater to people from all walks of life and said that audience members didn’t have to classical music savants to enjoy it. “It’s a little bit under an hour ... you don’t have to sit too long and we created a relaxed atmosphere that everyone can enjoy. “You don’t have understand, you just have to come with an open mind.” The concert will take place on Friday 8 December from 7.30pm and Yarra Ranges Council encourages under 26-year-olds to enjoy this great concert series with a free ticket. To find out more information or book a ticket, ring 1300 368 333.

Friday grand final planned By Peter Douglas AFL Yarra Ranges is set to cash-in on the AFL grand final long weekend, revealing the Division 1 grand finalists in 2018 will play on the Friday public holiday. In an attempt to address a decline in grand final attendances, AFL Yarra Ranges will become one of the first leagues in Victoria to move away from the traditional Saturday afternoon timeslot. The league failed to maintain a strong attendance this year for the league’s premier match, played out between Olinda Ferny Creek and Woori Yallock, with the league citing the popularity of the AFL preliminary final and other local grand finals held in the region. AFL Yarra Ranges general manager Aaron Bailey said the move showed the league was being pro-active in its attempt to draw bigger crowds. Mr Bailey hopes the change will see the league’s showpiece clash become a major event for the Yarra Ranges region. “We want to make the AFL Yarra Ranges grand finals a key event on the football calendar in the eastern region; the move to the Friday public holiday is designed to create a showcase of our premier competitions,” he said. “In 2017, we saw a decline in our grand final attendances through a contribution of factors, including the AFL preliminary final and other local grand finals in our region. “Given the AFL Yarra Ranges is a progressive organisation ... the opportunity is there to be the first competition to trial this. The commission and staff see this as a meaningful move for 2018.” Mr Bailey said the change aims to create opportunities for more of the football and netball communities to be available to attend. In 2018, the grand final will be held on Friday 28 September. This season, Olinda Ferny Creek defeated Woori Yallock in the Division 1 grand final, claiming its first premiership in the top division, winning 18.17 (125) to 3.6 (24). Meanwhile, the Division 2 grand finals will take place the weekend before, with this year’s decider to be played on Sunday 23 September. All Division 1 finals will take place on Saturday (except the grand final), while all Division 2 finals will be played on Sundays, including the grand final. In announcing the 2018 fixture, Mr Bailey said the Worksafe Community Championships will be held on 19 May, with AFL Yarra Ranges taking on South East Football Netball League. The splitting of senior divisions’ final rounds will again occur on the weekend, with the AFL Victoria Community Cup (Country versus Metro) to be played, providing all Division 1 clubs with a bye

Perfect score for Winters at Woods Point By John Wood At the Woods Point Gun Club in November, even though it is nearly summer, a winter storm descended on the shooting grounds and its name was John Winters, who had a day of shooting to remember. But first to the Eye Opener, where Don Rhodes won AA Grade, 30/30, Daniel Chinn and Daryl Ewert shared A Grade, 30/30, and Tony Armstrong won B Grade outright also with 30/30. C Grade was an easy win for Winters who also scored a perfect 30/30 for a good start to the day. The first of the President’s Championships was 25 targets Double Barrel sponsored by David and Kathryn Frazer. Daniel Chinn, Trevor Ewert, Jim West, John Winters, Phillip Desmond and Andrew Estcourt went into a shoot off for the Championship sash after scoring 25/25 each. Fourteen targets later Estcourt from Warrnambool took the sash 49/49 and the AA Grade prize as well. mailcommunity.com.au

Phillip Desmond won AA Grade 2nd with 48/49. Jim West 27/27 was successful in A Grade with, 27/27, from Chinn 26/27. Club Secretary, Laurie Poile won B Grade, 26/27, Tony Armstrong runner-up, 25/27, while in C Grade Winters’ 25/25 easily won the prize, Peter Lang second 25/26. The main event was the 45th year of the President’s Trophy sponsored by John and Annette Wood. The tension was palpable as a new perpetual trophy board, made by Greg Shahin was revealed. Poile, Chinn (D) and Winters, all 25/25, went into a shoot off for the engraved clock personal trophy and to have their name engraved on the perpetual trophy. Poile and Chinn let the nerves win and both lost their first target, leaving Winters to break his target and become the 2017 President’s Trophy winner, 26/26. Poile’s 26/27 gave him second place, Chinn third, 25/27.

Shawn Wood won fourth place, 29/30, after a shoot off with Peter Lang, Matthew Ewert, Trevor Ewert and Matty McLachlan. Trevor Ewert sponsored the final President’s event, 25 targets Tower. At the end only Trevor Newman and Phillip Woods shot all targets to battle for the sash. Seven targets later Newman was the the 2017 President’s Tower champion, 32/32, Woods second, 31/32. Daryl Ewert, Trevor Ewert, Jim West, Ken Skinner and Phillip Desmond, all 24/25, competed for the minor placings with Ewert (T) taking third, 43/45, Skinner fourth, 42/45. The overall Vice President’s High Gun sash sponsored Peter and Ellen West was presented to Trevor Ewert with 73/75, John Winters just one target behind, 72/75 to finish an extremely successful day. Anne Skinner made sure the troops were well fed while Kirsten Chinn was a ball of energy, referring, scoring, selling raffle tickets and gener-

Mount Evelyn is reigning By Chris Anderson With persistent rain putting a halt on all cricket this weekend, it has left local cricket fans pondering what has happened thus far this season. The season started with a restructure to the Yarra Valley’s top grades, DJ Strachan Shield and RA Finger Trophy. With the number of teams dropping in the top grade, scheduled crossover games between the grades were implemented to give added interest. At the top of the Strachan Shield table, there is hot competition for finals positions. Mount Evelyn sits atop the ladder with just one loss thus far. The Mounters have been consistent with both bat and ball; and without dominating their opposition, they have chalked up the wins. With the bat, their top three - Daniel Giblin (329 runs), Jesse Fraser (269 runs) and Gareth Fraser - have led from the front, consistently giving their team a solid start. The opening partnership of Giblin and Jesse Fraser are combining for an average partnership of 55 runs which puts the pressure back on their opponents from the beginning. This has led to consistent scores where their bowlers have combined to keep their opponents contained without any standouts. Their loss came to their grand final nemesis Warburton-Millgrove, continuing their hold on contests between the two teams, a slight concern for the Mount Evelyn hierarchy. Perennial finalists, the Mounters will again be around the mark, the question will be on whether their big guns can fire at the pointy end of the season. Yarra Junction are hot on their heels; and considering their offseason departures, would be well pleased with the way the 2017-‘18 sea-

son has started. The Eagles’ season has been built around their bowlers dismissing their opponents for paltry totals; then making short work of the chase. Their challenge thus far has been setting a total. The bowling line up is adept a strangling their opposition into submission. Nick Bark, Nick Lawlor and Jesse Cook provide the grunt up front, whilst opposition batting line ups struggle to gain the whip handle against the miserly slow bowling of Kevin Bomford, Pat Ford and Terry Ottrey. Their big star, however, is Andy Taylor who is performing with both bat and ball. The strong top order bat has been the main pin in their batting line-up and a surprise with the ball. Yarra Junction possesses the consistency with the ball, and will hoping that English import, Andy Wear can continue build his season with the bat, and they can become a real threat. Yarra Glen are another team who will be priming themselves for a big run at the finals. After electing to take the big plunge and jump two grades to challenge the competition’s best, the Riverpigs’ experienced top order bats, and contributions from their young stars, see them right in the mix. John O’Donnell (231 runs) and David Brambilla (211 runs) are providing the team with the perfect starts, whilst Brendan Ricci and Andy Cowan have capitalised on their openers good work, and consistent scores have been achieved. Early in the season, young leg-spinner Jimmy Lusk (16 wickets) led the bowlers, but, as the opponents have become tougher, his wickets have dried, and this poses the biggest challenge for the team, getting enough wickets.

While their guns fire with the bat, they will score enough runs to challenge, but do they have the fire power to throw back at the competition’s best. Time will tell. Rounding out the top four are reigning premiers Warburton-Millgrove who have been motoring along quietly in the shadows. Back to back losses to Yarra Junction and Coldstream provided an early season stumble, but four consecutive victories, including the one against competition leaders Mount Evelyn, has the Burras rolling along in premiership form. Their bowling has been well led by their experienced spinners, Adam Humphrey (14 wickets) and Daniel Lever (13 wickets), while David Lever has toiled manfully with the new ball. Their premiership last season was built on their batting depth; and although it is yet to really be challenged, it still poses a major threat to their opponents. Sean Humphrey (208 runs @ 52) has been the team’s most consistent, and that record could be more impressive considering he hasn’t been dismissed in his last three innings. His efforts have been well supported by a host of others at the top of the order. If reigning THR Drummond Medallist, David Lever, and brother Ben can both fire at the top of the order, the Burras will be tough to chase again. Experience and skill are a dangerous proposition, and that’s why the Burras are still the team to chase, despite sitting fourth on the ladder. Sitting outside the top four are Healesville and Seville. Both sides are within striking distance of finals cricket if they can string some wins together, but there will need to be some significant improvements on their performances so

far, particularly with the bat. Healesville have the experience and some emerging talent, but it is yet to click for the Bloods. They have been able to challenge opposition batting line-ups, and they can be confident of containing their opposition to a manageable total. Kasey clinches on last lap By Dean Thompson

A Grade Junior Sedan winner Kasey Garlick from Lilydale. the outside and drove around the two of them and came off with speed out of turn four and raced to the line to win by just 0.316 of a second from Cornwall, Gorski, Harris and Ally Morrison. Garlick on her way recording a new one lap track record for Juniors of 22.674. Also competing was the Street Stocks with a handful of cars, Collin Tate ran particularly strong through the evening and recorded a win in the feature from Wayne Sheerman and Lee Beach. The next meeting at Alexandra is 9 December, with a big Holden versus Ford Street Stock feature set to attract 40 cars to compete, another event not to be missed especially with the summer closure of Alexandra Speedway following and the club re-opening in March.

Sports Sedan winner Damien Miller and member of the Alexandra Club.

1187559-RC24-15

Alexandra Speedway played host to Victoria’s best Sports Sedan racers on Saturday 25 November with almost 30 competitors arriving to do battle in the quest to win the Sports Sedan Rumble. Later in the night, it was Alexandra member Damien Miller who went on to win the big feature while Lilydale youngster Kasey Garlick made a last lap outside pass around two cars to take the win in one of two Junior Sedan finals. Nine qualifying heat races for the Sports Sedans began with local Alexandra resident Luke Fallon taking the win in the very first event of the day. Leigh Bourke, Brad Warren, Miller, Matt Nelson, Steve Kershaw, then Brad Warren again, Nelson with a record one lap circuit of Alexandra of 20.553 and Miller all doubled up with wins in the final round. A handful of competitors had crashes or break downs along the way and missed or didn’t finish the feature event. Morris Ahearn had a big crash in the first round and his meeting was finished right there and then with front end damage and a possible hurt engine that the team didn’t not to risk. Marcus Reddecliffe, Nathan Shortis and Shane Kruger young drivers working their way up the ranks in the class and seasoned campaigner Lucas Conder also had mechanical issues finishing their nights. In the final Nelson, Warren and then Miller all had their moments to shine, with Miller passing Warren for the lead with around nine laps to go. Miller stretched his advantage to some distance and went on to record the win ahead of Warren, Fallon, Kershaw, Bourke, Dale Smith, Andrew Jordan, Steve Akil and Nathan O’Brien. The Junior Sedan category this season is separated into B Grade Developing and A Grade groups. In the B Grade, Todd Moule from Pakenham took control of the car his sister Jade drove all last season and recorded a half lap victory ahead of Rhys Meakins, Breanna Simpson, Bradin Claridge and Chloe Sheerman. Moule had lapped Sheerman and was chasing down Claridge when the race finished. Kilmore’s Aaron Meakins set a new eight lap race record as he went on to defeat visiting driver Tim Hutchinson and Victorian Champion Warrick Howie, Liam Powell and Cory Horter. Meakins won by a few seconds over Hutchinson. In the A Grade Juniors, the eight lap final was a terrific battle between Ricky Cornwall, Tim Gorski and earlier in the race Ryan Harris from Bega in New South Wales and Garlick. Harris was issued a rear of field penalty by the Stewards and had to fight through the field at a re-start and Garlick started to reel in Cornwall and Gorski ahead of her. On the very last lap, on the outside of the leaders, Cornwall and Gorski, Garlick went to
