Parking a circus A concern over limited car parking for the Wonderland Spiegeltent in Barwon Heads this summer has prompted Barwon Coast to remind event goers of alternatives. The Spiegeltent will set up on the foreshore at Lahey Square, near the bridge, from Boxing Day to 28 January. The Wonderland Spiegeltent, a 1930s nostalgic wooden mirrored and antique travelling European circus tent, is a major coup for the region. Car parking and traffic congestion in Barwon Heads was described by many as a nightmare last summer after the introduction of two pedestrian crossings on Hitchcock Avenue and Bridge Road. Barwon Coast said Wonderland Spiegeltent patrons could consider other travel options.
Those attending matinee shows will be most affected by low car parking availability. “There are excellent coastal trails leading straight to the Wonderland Spiegeltent site, so why not put on a pair of walking shoes or ride your bike to the show? Bike parking will be available onsite,” Barwon Coast general manager Gary McPike said. “Perhaps you could convince a friend to drop you off and walk or catch an Uber or a taxi home. Car-pooling with friends is another great idea to reduce the stress of finding a car park.” Barwon Coast runs a small shuttle bus over the summer months between Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads, which is an option for matinee shows, but it will not be operating for the evening performances.
McHarry’s Buslines also run from Geelong and other areas of the Bellarine to Barwon Heads, see www.mcharrys.com.au for timetables. For those who are driving, parking may be found at a number of sites. Suggested spots include the carpark on the end of the Ocean Grove spit at 20W followed by a short walk across Barwon Heads Bridge, carparks in the Bluff Road precinct, within Lahey Square itself and along Flinders Parade.

Night of cocktails and care
Glenn Skipper started and finished his boxing career on a high. 175797
Two for two By Justin Flynn Glenn Skipper decided that he needed to get fit as middle age took its toll. The Ocean Grove bricklayer paid Purist Boxing in Leopold a visit and started a fitness regime, which included learning how to box under the tutelage of professional boxer Jack Light. A bicep tendon operation was a major setback, but undeterred ‘Skip’ got ready for a tournament in Caloundra, Queensland, where he fought twice for two wins in the 51 to 55 age group and 85kg to 91kg categories. “I was always the small guy in the photos at school,” he said. “I thought I’d join for the fitness side of things.” At 51, Skipper had never boxed before. Light took him under his wing and in an astonishingly short period of time, he won in a technical knockout in his first fight and won his sec-
ond bout on a points decision. “The fighting is the easy bit,” Skipper said. “All I knew before the fights was the name of my opponent. It’s just a name - you don’t know their background or where they’ve come from. The unknown is the scary part. “There was panic beforehand, but I’d trained right and was confident in my ability. Once I’d done a proper warm up there were no nerves.” So what now? “Retirement,” Skipper laughs. “I’ve done it now. I went from not knowing a thing to winning two fights. That’ll do I reckon. I’ll keep surfing and visiting Purist Boxing one night a week. I enjoy watching the kids from gym. It’s like a really close little community down there.” Skipper said the guidance he has received from Light, 22, has been immense. “He’s like family - I love him like a son,” he said.

“Members have dined there and had highly recommended it as fitting for our special celebration,” she said. “Committee members were inundated with positive feedback from members expressing their delight of the venue, the wonderful food and appreciation for a wonderful night of fun, friendship and fund-raising. “Our program officers were much appreciative of the efforts of Barry and his staff to ensure all went smoothly and that we all had a wonderful time. Nothing was too much trouble to them. Who would have thought that we could have so much fun raising money for needy children?” 360Q owner Barry Iddles said he and his team were delighted to be part of such a brilliant fund-raising initiative. “The Ocean Grove Evening VIEW Club is a wonderful group of women doing something incredibly generous for local kids who need some assistance,” he said. “We were thrilled to host them and donate $100 voucher to the cause.”

A very special Christmas gathering at 360Q has raised $2000 to help eight local disadvantaged children and their families. The Ocean Grove Evening VIEW Club, a volunteer group which raises money each year to fund education programs run by The Smith Family, held its annual end-of-year cocktail party on the Harbour at Queenscliff. The club raised the $2000 through a $5 additional fee on their tickets, $805 via a raffle and $765 through the sale of Christmasthemed decorations hand-made by the club’s craft interest group. Each year the club funds eight children in Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula by donating an annual amount to cover schooling costs and excursions that their families could not otherwise afford. They also give the children two $50 gift cards for their birthday and at Christmas, and the club periodically funds individual programs run by the Smith Family, such as therapeutic art classes. The donations are made anonymously, although the group is sent progress reports for each child with information about how the programs are helping them. Publicity officer Annie Webber said raising money, which the group does in various ways throughout the year, is very rewarding. “It is incredibly satisfying to be able to support disadvantaged students when statistics show that 1.1 million Australian children are living in poverty and one in seven children need our support to make the most of their education,” she said. “As well as the educational aspect, the program helps children develop confidence and overcome the feeling of being 'different’ because of their circumstances.” Annie said the club has 150 members and 85 attended the Christmas party. They chose 360Q because it is a local venue in a great location and with plenty of ambience. And she said they weren’t disappointed.

Gold from gardens Surfside Primary School won its second Best Edible Garden prize at the Victorian Schools Garden Awards. The school also received an award for the south-west region best garden for primary and special schools with more than 280 students. The 40th Annual Victorian Schools Garden Awards were held at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Melbourne and the award was
presented to Surfside Primary by Paul Crowe (OAM). School representatives and Rachel Ford (The Kitchen Garden Specialist) accepted the award. That makes three years in a row that Surfside has won two awards for its vegetable garden, which is used as part of the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden School program.
The school received $1350 in prize-money, after a long process in the selection criteria and categories. The school plans to purchase equipment that can be put back to maintaining and upgrading the garden. Next year, Surfside plans to introduce beekeeping to the garden.

Lana McLachlan and Stella Courtney are two young gymnasts on the rise. 175743 12372825-LN49-17
Two young local gymnasts are fresh from a successful competition campaign that resulted in them competing in the State Titles. Lana McLachlan, 13, and Stella Courtney, 9, were initially selected to represent Geelong YMCA to compete at the South-Western region qualifier for the Victorian State Women’s Artistic Gymnastic Finals. At the qualifier the gymnasts finished first in their team event which included four other team members. As individuals Lana qualified overall first in her age group on the four apparatus consisting of the floor, beam, bars and vault. Stella also had success, qualifying second overall in her age group. The gymnasts then participated in the Victorian State Final Geelong Arena, where they competed against all the other regions in Victoria. Lana, Stella and their team performed well amongst tough competition where placings often involve the smallest of margins.
Generous locals flocked to The Mex to support one of their own, Amelia Banks, an Ocean Grove mum fighting brain cancer. As a sell-out event, over 120 local women spent the afternoon enjoying a drink and nibbles while listening to Sam Hanson and shopping in the pop-up store. To raise money, local businesses and individuals generously donated goods and services that went into special boxes to be sold on the day. Organisers, Nikki Filia and Kara Maguire, were overwhelmed with the response from the community and over 110 boxes were filled, with all money from the sales going to the cause. The boxes were a huge success, selling out in the first hour, contributing to the total raised of $7000. Half of the money raised went into Amelia’s team fund for Walk for Brain Cancer and the other half was donated to the Banks family. They have decided to use this money to go on a family holiday to New Zealand, to make beautiful memories with their kids. The organisers would like to thank everyone who donated, attended and helped. It was another example of the beautiful spirit that exists in our community. To donate to Amelia’s cause, head to http:// www.mycause.com.au/page/165474 Amelia was overwhelmed with the support, expressed in the following letter. “Ollie and I have been totally overwhelmed by the love and support shown by our friends and our local community. Our goal to raise $5000 for brain cancer research has been smashed and never in our wildest dreams did we think we would get the chance to take our boys on a family holiday as well! It brings tears to my eyes to think we can make some special memories with our boys because of you. Thank you for giving us hope and strength for fighting this horrible disease and a massive thank you to Nikki and Kara for spending weeks organising and hosting this wonderful day. And to The Mex for sharing your awesome venue for the event. You truly are amazing people.” - Ollie, Amelia, Harry and Teddy Banks

The awards were presented to: Firefighter of the Year - Eliza Carlon. Encouragement Award - Colin Bridges. Captain’s Award - Libby Burnett, community safety co-ordinator. Ocean Grove Barwon Heads RSL Sub-Branch Annual Award - Helen Wood, captain. Barwon Heads Fire Brigade captain Helen Wood said the annual dinner and awards night was a chance to recognise the effort made by members to help keep their beloved community safe. “Our members don’t seek the limelight nor do they believe in the individual, as the true testament is how well we work as a team. However, we have had the tradition of annual brigade awards in place for many years as a way to thank members who go above and beyond,” she said. “It is particularly thrilling to see the female members of the brigade recognised for their contribution, proving that diversity is integral to the success and longevity of our brigade and the CFA as a whole.”

Ingrid’s big writing efforts are on song Ocean Grove Primary School student Ingrid Salla has won third place in the 5-6 category of the Australian Children’s Music Foundation’s National Songwriting Competition, with an original song titled Rainbows. Ingrid is tutored by acclaimed local musician Andrea Robertson and initially started because of the Rotary Junior Youth Awards that she opted to be a part of.
“Singing and songwriting was what our focus became," Andrea said. “We worked on a couple of original songs that Ingrid had written, gave them a bit more form/direction, worked out some harmonies etc and then when I found out about this songwriting comp I encouraged her to consider applying for it." Andrea and Ingrid then made a plan to record two of her original songs at Andrea’s home studio
so that the songs would be ready to submit prior to the cut off date. “I was so thrilled when I got a message from her mum to let me know she’d been shortlisted, and then to find out she came in third place in her age group was even more exciting," Andrea said. “Ingrid has a lot of talent and I’m so proud of her and how far she has come this year."

Bombers are set to fly in By Mark Heenan Essendon Football Club will hold a four-day training camp in Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads in February. The Bombers will arrive on 6 February to focus on pre-season training and team bonding. Around 70 staff including the entire Essendon playing list, coaching staff, sports science personnel and members of the football department will spend up to four days on the Bellarine. Essendon game performance coach Mark Neeld, who coached Ocean Grove to senior flags in 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003, said it would be a huge boost for the local area. “We have had some positive feedback from the council and we’ve been overwhelmed with the welcome from the Ocean Grove Cricket Club and the local community,” Neeld told the Voice. Neeld encouraged locals to attend Essendon’s main AFL training session at Ray Menzies Memorial Oval at Shell Road in Ocean Grove on Friday 8 February, which is open to the public. “That Friday training morning session at Shell Road at 9am will be an open session, we want as many people as possible to come down to watch the boys train afterwards and say hello,” he said. “With the proximity to a couple of the local schools we are hoping we can get lots of kids down there and have a look at the boys train - there will be an opportunity for whoever comes down to chat to players and grab some autographs.” In recent weeks a few Essendon staff including Neeld, who grew up in Ocean Grove, inspected the modern Shell Road sports pavilion facility and its playing surface. “Ocean Grove Football and Cricket Club has just been upgraded - it has got an amazing
The Essendon Bombers are coming to Ocean Grove for a pre-season training camp. new facility - what a great facility that is for local sport,” Neeld said. He praised Shell Road co-tenants Ocean Grove Cricket Club which use Ray Menzies Memorial Oval as their training base across summer for its support. “The Ocean Grove Cricket Club could not have been more welcoming - they have been absolutely fantastic,” Neeld said.
Ocean Grove Cricket Club president Peter Hart said it was a terrific boost for the sports focused region. “It is not about cricket as such versus footy, it is just about the community,” Hart said. Neeld, a former Melbourne AFL coach who played 74 AFL games with Geelong and Richmond, said players were spoiled for choice to take part in outdoor activities which show-
cased the Bellarine. He said there were numerous surfing and golf enthusiasts within the Bombers' playing group. “The camp itself has been designed to offer choice for the boys which effectively means there is going to be a large block of free time - there are some keen surfers in the group and there are also some very keen golfers in the group,” he said.

Beach fun is open to all One of the more uplifting events on the Ocean Grove calendar, Disabled Surfers, has set its 2018 dates. People with a disability will get the chance to ride a wave on 4 February and 4 March. The goal for Disabled Surfers is to provide an inclusive experience for all people with any disability to experience the rush of riding a wave. Ocean Grove has world class beach facilities that help make the experience be as inclusive as possible and volunteers are always welcomed, in fact the program would not operated without them.
Facilities include: special needs changing/ amenities; wheelchair ramp access from the car park all the way to the sand; specialised beach wheelchairs (to suit adults and children). Specialised beach wheelchairs are available for use along the Bellarine and Surf coast free of charge by the community at any time by arrangement. This enables a person with special needs to experience the beach at any time with family and friends all year round. There are also grants to support travel and accommodation costs over a 12-month period for athletes, coaches, officials or teams that are required to travel to train or compete - whether it’s their local competition or an Aboriginal sporting festival. The new Aboriginal Participation category is specifically working to break down barriers and make it easier for Aboriginal Victorians to get involved in grassroots sport. I would encourage all clubs to at least consider these grants and for more information or to apply online, visit sport.vic.gov.au Portarlington Harbour completed On Friday 1 December, I was very proud to officially open the newly completed Portarlington Safe Harbour. The State Government invested $15 million to develop the harbour which included two rock breakwaters, a new 190-metre long concrete commercial berthing area and 27 commercial berths serviced with water and electricity. Besides being the home of the ever popular Portarlington to Melbourne ferry service the harbour also provides all weather access for commercial fishing, recreational vessels and a range of marine industry access facilities. With the outstanding success of stage one of this project, I have now asked Parks Victoria to commence community consultations on a prospective stage two of the project. Welcomed grants for Bellarine Landcare groups
I was recently pleased to announce that a number of local environment groups had received $17,000 in funding as part of the State Government’s Landcare Grants program. Funding is distributed through the Corangamite Catchment Management Authority, which supports local Landcare groups carry out environmental projects to improve regional waterway and land health. The Bellarine Catchment Network received $5000 for the publication of the third editions of their very popular and informative Bellarine Coastal Flora and Fauna booklets which are used extensively in schools, community groups and by landholders across the Bellarine. The Bellarine Landcare Group received $12,000 for their Bellarine Koalas Corridor project. This important project aims to identify koala hotspots on the Bellarine and then engage and recruit locals to support the koalas. Such support will include participating in the onground revegetation of the known habitated areas. Importantly the grants program highlights the great environmental outcomes than can be achieved through co-operation between the Corangamite Catchment Management Authority, environment groups and local communities. For more information on the grants contact the catchment authority. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year As we quickly head towards the festive season, I would first and foremost like to acknowledge and thank all those police, firefighters, lifesavers, SES and coast guard personnel who over the summer months do an outstanding job in looking after not only locals but the thousands of visitors who flock to the Bellarine. I would also like to wish everyone a very merry Christmas and happy but safe New Year. As always, please don’t hesitate to contact me by email or call my office if there are any matters that I may be able to assist you with directly. Surfside Primary School held a PJ and pancake day for the Evans family.
Flippin’ out for school fund-raiser By Allie Hines and Abbey Evans (students of S12) Surfside Primary School had a pyjama/onesie day and a pancake breakfast. All money raised was donated to the Evans family, who sadly lost their house and all of their belongings in a fire. Surfside Primary School has been doing their best to support the family at such a tragic time. All ingredients for the pancakes were donated by the students in S12 and their families including eggs, flour, sugar, milk and toppings including maple syrup, jam, whipped cream, chocolate sauce, lemons and sprinkles. S12 made at least 30 batches of pancake batter in their kitchen time. Almost 700 pancakes were sold to students and families. The students and parents of S12 organised the pancake stall in the morning. We were extremely proud to make $2600 and support a member of our class. This money will go towards helping the Evans family get back on their feet. Thank you to the Surfside Primary community for their support. We couldn’t have done it without you.
Seasonal notes from community group Geelong Council elections The Ocean Grove Community Association congratulates all the 11 new councillors elected and specifically our three Bellarine Ward Councillors. Traffic issues VicRoads has commenced the planning/design process to duplicate Grubb Road, which we believe will entail community consultation. Next year and leading upto the 24 November 2018 State elections, we will commence lobbying the State and Federal governments for the funds to actually duplicate Grubb Road from the Bellarine Highway to The Parade. Any such duplication will be on the basis of maintaining and enhancing the native vegetation along Grubb Road
and installing all power lines underground. Our aim is to have construction works commence in 2020. We have a traffic meeting with VicRoads and the council in early December, so let us know if you have any other traffic issues that you want us to raise.
The committee meets at 7pm on the first Wednesday of each month at the Ocean Grove Bowling Club Board Room. You are welcome to attend one of our meetings prior to becoming a committee member.
2018 community forums
We thank the Voice for publishing our newsletters and supporting Ocean Grove and keeping us all informed on local issues.
We want your suggestions as to what community forums you would like us to organise in 2018. Some suggestions have been: Developing Walking/Bicycle tracks within Ocean Grove and connecting to other towns. Establishing Cultural/Education facility. So let us know your ideas.

The 2017 Melburnian of the year Susan Alberti rolled into Ocean Grove with local author Stephanie Asher to promote ‘The Footy Lady’ book signing at Bookgrove on 2 December. Asher, a Bellarine Ward councillor and professional writer and speaker, took part in an open Q&A session with Alberti in front of numerous local book enthusiasts at the popular Ocean Grove based store. Ms Alberti AC was honoured for her lifelong work to help find a cure for diabetes, a condition that claimed her daughter’s life 16 years ago.
“She has turned into a positive, turned an incredibly tragic situation into something really valuable,” said Asher, who is the Ocean Grove Life Saving Club vice-president. “Sue is actually internationally renowned as well with her work.” Alberti, former vice president of the Western Bulldogs AFL club, is the driving force behind the establishment of the AFL women’s national league which held its inaugural season in 2017. Alberti said she was impressed with the growth of AFL women’s in the wider Geelong region, including Ocean Grove.

FREETIME
THE VOICE GUIDE TO ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT
Music flowed at festival All good things must come to an end, and the Queenscliff Music Festival wrapped up for 2017. Like any good 21st birthday party, there were plenty of beers, cheers and even a few (happy) tears. Music lovers from all walks of life were treated to three days of sensational sounds from all corners of the country and a smattering of artists all the way from the USA and Canada. The festivities kicked off with an ABC Melbourne live broadcast of ‘The Friday Revue’ from the Uniting Church, hosted by Brian Nankervis and Richelle Hunt. The two-hour show featured interviews and performances from The Teskey Brothers, Mia Dyson and Allysha Joy - all of whom played to adoring crowds later that day - and the muchloved quiz was hosted by honorary local Bob Evans. In the festival arena that evening, artist and activist Xavier Rudd capped off the first night on the popular Lighthouse stage. Saturday gave punters plenty of eclectic options to cram into their first day, plus the opportunity to get aboard the Blues Train featuring performances from Didirri, Hat Fitz and Cara, and Freya Josephine Hollick to name a few. As the sun began to go down, a new-look line-up of Yothu Yindi and The Treaty Project attracted a mammoth crowd. Dhapanbal, the daughter of Dr M. Yunupingu, made a late announced special trip to Victoria to perform with the group - her first as part of this project. Bernard Fanning followed up with a full house, treating fans to a setlist of old and new numbers as well as a medley of classics from late greats Prince, Bowie and Tom Petty. Sunday, as is often the case, was the day for festival-goers to catch acts previously missed or highly recommended. Mama Kin Spender’s show - complete with a choir that made them a

shoe-in for the biggest band at the festival - saw both the audience and almost every member of the 40-plus ensemble reduced to tears of joy and exultation. Australian music stalwart Russell Morris played the festival out in spectacular style on the Hippos stage, while hit-makers The Temper Trap simultaneously wowed the crowd over on the Lighthouse stage. Surprise fan favourites from the weekend included the Hot Potato Band, which had audiences jumping for joy to their six-piece horn
section and big band charm, and Perth’s The Southern River Band blew the roof off the Pavilion stage with their shirtless, sweat-soaked set of good hard rock ‘n’ roll. Warm weather and mostly blue skies had punters swarming the festival grounds from stage to stage and out to the markets and beyond, enjoying incredible local food and beverages along the way. The relaxed festival vibe plus over 250 shows across 15 stages had audiences spoiled for choice over the weekend.
Bob Evans. Festival director Andrew Orvis said: “Our 21st festival exceeded all expectations. A fantastic weekend with many musical highlights. The sun stayed out, the storms went either side of us, and the weather was perfect. Many thanks to all of our wonderful supporters, particularly the 400-plus volunteers who helped put on such a wonderful show. See you all in Queenscliff next year, 23-25 November.” 12372822-RC49-17

THE LOCAL GUIDE FOR DINING ON THE BELLARINE
Old favourites and more The Piping Hot Chicken Shop and Burger Grill has been Ocean Grove’s go-to place for serious comfort food for decades. It still is, and new owner Tami McAdam promises all the old staples, but also some new surprises. “We’re trying to do modern take-away that’s moved with the times, but we’ve kept the stuff that people have loved over the years," she told The Voice. The chips and gravy are still there, and still the most popular item on the menu. The famous burgers are still there, but there’s now a Korean and Mexican version to tempt your hunger pangs, and there are heaps of gluten-free items to choose from. Rains are a healthy sign There’s been some lovely spring rains over the last week, which will help keep the waterways and dams healthy during the summer months. Once again I’ve been busy with end of year, work and school functions, so have not been able to get out and about as frequently as usual. I did go to Wallington to once again photograph the beautiful scarlet honeyeaters, and they are still around in good numbers, which is great. While there I spotted the brown goshawk with the lack of primary feathers again - I hope it’s not eating the scarlet honeyeaters! I participated in the Latham’s snipe count on the weekend of 25 November. I walked around Blue Waters Lake for more than an hour and did not spot one Latham’s snipe, but read that there were 54 snipe seen at Jerringot in Geelong, and a whopping 98 at Begola Wetlands. That’s great that Begola provides the appropriate habitat to allow 98 snipe to visit from Japan over the summer. I think that there’s too much water in Blue Waters Lake this year for the snipe, as they hide on the bank of the lake, and there’s not as much bank at the moment. I was driving home from work at 2200 hours one night and did spot two tawny frogmouths flying along Lake Road, Connewarre, and further along the road, high in a gum tree was a barn owl which was calling. It was heaven. Speaking of tawny frogmouths, I received an email and some photos from Ian who saw a family of two adults and one young tawny in Old Ocean Grove. Before I had a chance to see this family for myself I received an email from Sue, who lives in the same street, and she had very unfortunately found a deceased tawny at the end of her driveway. I went over and met Sue, and the tawny was a young bird and it looked like it had been hit by a car. The parent birds were nowhere to be seen. Thanks Ian and Sue for letting me know about another family of tawnies in Ocean Grove. On a happier note, David, who lives in
Red-necked stint at the Barwon River Estuary, taken by Kevin.
Woodlands wrote to me to tell me that the tawnies in his garden are sitting on a nest for the second time this season. The red-rumped parrots that live in my garden have produced two offspring, and they are flying very well, so have not been killed by my dog Max this year (thank goodness). I also have a house sparrow nest in the same tree as the red-rumps, and the little sparrows are such diligent little parents. I hope that the collared sparrow hawk that I saw two weeks ago doesn’t come back to my garden in the near future. Speaking of sparrows I was having a very
pleasant coffee at the ’Cheeky Cow’ the other day when there was a commotion outside and I saw a pied currawong catch a male sparrow, and all the other sparrows were obviously most distressed. My coffee didn’t taste as great after that. I received an email from Kevin, who photographed a flock of red-necked stints on the Barwon River Estuary. Thanks so much for the photo Kevin. Enjoy the beautiful spring weather and the beginning of Christmas spirit. - Jen Carr, jennifer.carr6@bigpond.com

Surfing’s good to the last After a week of fickle weather surfers were blessed with sun and surf for the last Southern Ocean Union of Longboarding (SOUL) comp of 2017. The final competition for the year was held at Boings beach break along 13th Beach Road. The Boings beach break has long been one of SOUL’s favourite locations when the conditions are favourable for longboard surfing. As the sun rose the car park was quickly occupied and the smell of bacon and eggs filled the air. A bit of slip, slop, slap and the comp was underway with the promise of a cracker of a day. The morning's incoming tide set participants up with semi-clean one to three foot waves. A little bit of easterly swell produced
left and right peaks offering something for everyone to surf their best. Once again the frothing groms put on a magnificent display. With mums and dads in the water with the micro groms, a bit of a push they were up and riding catching tons of waves. The SOUL club is a great family club that encourages and welcomes individuals and families at any level of longboard surfing. Whether you are new to the area or have been here a while why not get down to the next comp and see what it’s all about. Dates for 2018 season will be posted in due course. Weather plays havoc with results Wet weather played havoc across the Geelong Bowls Region on Saturday as rain-affected greens cancelled several matches. With a ruling which requires three out of the five scheduled matches in a round to be completed, clubs were keen to get games finished. At Ocean Grove the consistent drizzle ended the hopes for Division 6 and 8 as their matches ended at half time. Playing on the synthetic surface Division 1 and Division 3 went into the break with healthy leads. Division One in a battle with sixth placed Drysdale got a big jump early whilst Division Three against Belmont were keen to keep the game rolling. The weather was on and off for the rest of the afternoon which was enough to see Belmont pull the pin and hand the Grovers the points whilst the battle in the Ones continued. Shane Thorley lead the way for the home side playing consistent lead bowls with Jackie Webb, Terry Brady and Michael Allen in full flight against Drysdale’s John Fry. The Michael Allen team was too good on the day 29-17. On the adjacent rink Grove’s consistent Elaine Price laid the platform for the Chris Deppeler team getting them off to a great start. With the most capped player at Ocean Grove, Norm Thomas, following Price and Terry Thomas in the third position they proved to be too strong for Drysdale’s Danny Williams winning comfortably 32-9. Manager Alan Callow survived the pressure of not only skipping his rink to a one-shot win against Drysdale coach Cal Inderberg but also having the added pressure relating to the conditions and decisions that had to be made. In a neck and neck battle all day with some great bowls played, Andrew Wright, Steve Parry and Peter Jolley along with Callow prevailed 21-20. Luke Benson returned to the skipper’s position and guided his side of Garry Redford, Peter Uthmeyer and Warren Davis to a 24-21 win against the enigmatic Brad Prior. Going into the match in third place and the top two sides in this division both Highton teams winning, it was an important match for the Grovers to firstly complete and then the added bonus of clean sweeping all match points. All players involved deserved a pat on the back, despite some testing times with a few interruptions the game was completed as all matches in that round were also finished with a result. Captain of the Division 4 side James Rogan took to the green for his 500th appearance in the Ocean Grove colours. The side made sure their was something for Jim to celebrate at the end of the day getting the points in a wet affair at Belmont. Muriel Williams, Andra Kuschert, Terri Rudge and Bill Ryan delivered the goods 29-20 and Brian D’Elton continued his run of good form to win 22-19. Sitting atop the ladder after eight rounds was deserving of a 500th game beverage for the Captain. The only other team to get their match completed was Division 7 in their battle at Geelong. John Forde, Bob Bone, Pat Culton and promoted skipper Peter Townsend dominated to ensure the points returned to OG with their rink 32-14 winners. Alby Touwslager 2524 and Harold Curwood 26-19 delivered the goods to add 16 points to the seasons total. Midweek Division One lowered their colours in their away match at Leopold last week but were able to salvage two rink wins and four points. Sitting second on the ladder behind Queenscliff the Grovers will need to fire all bullets oceangrovevoice.com.au

as their round 11 clash with in form Torquay turns to a must win. Grove’s second Division One team returned with the points against a struggling Portarlington side on the turf at home. Marianne Rogan, Jean Luke, Shirley Olsen and stand in leader Kevin Beardsley dominated the contest winning 30-12. Just as convincing was Val Cook as she skipped her team to a 33-11 victory. Jim Rogan rounded out the clean sweep of points finishing 27-21. For the first time in 2017-18 both Ocean Grove division three teams celebrated success. The third side escaped with a four-shot win against Belmont at Belmont whilst the fourth side an eight-shot win against Geelong Cement at home. Lyn Stonehouse, Nancy Quinton, Kerrie Simpson and skipper Peter Corcoran made every bowl count as they made sure the Grovers would win their first match of the season finishing 32-17. Peter Eberle keeps enjoying his role of skipping along with Sandra O’Keefe, Elaine Hager and Barb Nicol they demolished their City of Geelong opponents 35-14. Harold Curwood knows how to win at the moment and his 2319 win provided the double.
The Sixers continue to fly the flag for the Grovers as they sit second on the ladder with 7 wins from 9 matches. Victorian Open 2017 Ocean Grove players stood proud on the greens at Shepparton last week and featured heavily in the business end of the week long championships. Marg Carroll and Faye Richardson capped off a tremendous week of bowls earning themselves a Victorian Open silver medal in the Ladies Pairs event. Carroll and Richardson played great bowls in the lead up to the main event but fell at the last hurdle to local Shepparton Park pair skipped by Bev Cahill. Defending Men’s singles champion Matt Flapper was again on track to replicate his performance from last year. Meeting with last year’s finalist Tasmania’s Lee Schraner in the semi-final this time Schraner proved that bit more consistent and advanced to the final beating Flapper 21-14. Flapper also made it to the quarter final of the Men’s Pairs along side Altona star Dane McKinnon and quarter final of the Mixed Pairs along side Leopold’s Nicole Shortis.

Win puts 17s back on track OCEAN GROVE Under 17: Ocean Grove 160 def St Albans/ Breakwater 60 and 5/88 Ocean Grove had a strong win in their Round 5 away game against St Albans/Breakwater. After winning the toss and deciding to field first, Ocean Grove produced an excellent bowling performance that was backed up by good fielding and catching. St Albans/Breakwater were all out for 60, with the wickets shared between Matthew Stanic (3/7), Nathan Scarpa (2/4), Noah deBruijn (2/7), Bailey LeMaistre (2/17) and Will Richardson (1/6). The fielding effort was highlighted by a spectacular catch by Noah deBruijn at mid off. In reply Ocean Grove compiled 160, highlighted by a partnership of 86 between Harry Tregenza (47) and Noah Cunningham (22). They were well supported by handy contributions from Noah deBruijn (22) and Brad Walder (18), enabling the team to establish a lead and push for an outright victory. Ocean Grove applied pressure in St Albans/ Breakwater’s second innings, but were unable to bowl them out for a second time, with the match finishing with St Albans/Breakwater on 5/88. Harry Tregenza (2/18) led the bowling, with the other wickets to Noah deBruijn, Will Richardson and Rory Monteith. Overall it was a much improved performance by the team as they start to get their season back on track. COLLENDINA The Under 15 Cobras made the trip into Geelong to take on the Marshall Cricket Club in this Round 5 two day game. Collendina Captain Xavier Norman won the toss and elected two bowl. The bowling effort was solid with the wickets being shared around. Diesel McNeil and Sam Donegan were the standouts with two wickets apiece. McNeil finished with the figures of 2/13 while Donegan took 2/17. Nick Gibbon 1/12, Spencer Bryan 1/11 and Baxter Stephensen 1/11 also bowled well. Marshall finished with a score of 8/139. Xavier Norman and Izaack Terhorst got things off to a solid start with an opening stand of 34 when Terhorst was dismissed for an aggressive 22. Sam Donegan (18) was next to go with the score on 87. The Cobras were on track to chase down the Marshall total. Gibbon made a fine 14 while Norman carried his bat for a great 46 not out but the Cobras lost wickets at regular intervals to be all out on the last ball of the day to finish with a score of 132.
Noah de Bruijn made 22 and took 2/7 for Ocean Grove. 160939 Wednesday, 6 December, 2017

Surf offers swell results With the prediction of a dropping small swell, things didn’t look good for the third comp of the 2017/18 season for the 13th Beach Boardriders, sponsored by Rip Curl. However the early morning surf check revealed contestable waves in the 1.5 to 2.5 foot range at Golfies. The call was made and the comp was on. First to hit the water was the Cadet Division who revelled in the small conditions displaying excellent skills and really pushing their boundaries. Jack Bassett, Charlie Mahoney and Isaiah Norling took out strong wins in their heats and progressed through the semis and then to the finals where they were joined by Charlie Farrer. In the Junior Division, fresh from his trip to
Hawaii, Kian Major showed great power and flow to win his heat and Charlie Farrer backed up his great form in the Cadets to win his heat. The final was a tight affair with less than two points separating first and third. The Open divisions had difficulty in the small inconsistent surf and many competitors spent much of their heats chasing waves. The best heat of the day was the Open A Final where there was a fierce battle between Shaun Todd and Todd Sopovski in which the lead changed several times and went right down to the buzzer when Shaun found a couple of great waves and ripped them to shreds. Open B was a tight contest, with Marcel Laidlaw convincingly taking out his first Open event.

Rain, rain just go away! By Mark Heenan Ocean Grove Cricket Club coach Paul Jubber said the rain abandoned match against Anglesea was unfortunate. Chasing 217 for victory, the Grubbers were 0/2 at stumps on day one at Anglesea. All BPCA A Grade day two fixtures were abandoned due to persistent rain on 2 December. “Really disappointing not to be able to have the opportunity to chase the runs,” Jubber told the Voice. “As a collective we were excited and confident to chase down Anglesea’s tally.” The A Grade Kangaroos were bowled out for 217 from 70.4 overs largely thanks to some great performances from Ocean Grove’s bowlers. Dangerous left arm fast bowler Dan Roddis (3/29) continued his strong form in recent weeks to finish with a three-wicket haul. Talented all-rounder Sam Jubber made some positive inroads with the ball and mopped up Anglesea’s tail with 2/22 from 8.4 overs and three maidens. Grubber spinners Thomas Kent and Paul Jubber combined to bowl 44 overs for the visitors. Kent picked up 2/52 from 20 overs and dismissed key Anglesea opening bat Ned Cooper for 49. Jubber finished with 2/63 from 24 overs and claimed the prized wicket of Anglesea playing coach and star all-rounder Dale Kerr (9). Third-placed Ocean Grove (3-1) faces a crucial two-day game at Ray Menzies Memorial Oval at home which begins this Saturday. Barwon Heads, last season’s A Grade grand finalists are in sixth spot after five rounds. Rain saw the cancellation of Ocean Grove’s B Grade two-day clash against Anglesea on 2 December at Ray Menzies Memorial Oval.

The game at Ray Menzies Memorial Oval was ruined by constant rain. 175831 Pictures: JUSTIN FLYNN The visitors bowled out the Grubbers for only 149 from 69.4 overs, while in reply Anglesea was 0/1 at stumps on day one. Grubber Lindon Giuffrida (28) top scored with the bat. The drawn result left Ocean Grove in second position in the 14-team B Grade competition after five rounds. In C Grade, Ocean Grove won on first in-
nings in its two-day game against Anglesea. The Grubbers dominated on day one to claim six points, bowling out the home side for only 75 from 31.1 overs. Ocean Grove bowlers Callum Docherty (3/32) and Lachlan Murnane (3/21) each claimed three wickets. In reply the Grubbers dominated with the bat to finish at 2/190 from 28 overs.
Players wait for a break in the rain. 175831 Gun opener Zac Henderson smashed eight boundaries and hit one six in his innings of 72. Greg Scarpa remained unbeaten on 41 while Bradley Walder (37) and Ben Hanson (25 not out) made valuable contributions The D Grade Grubbers (1/137) defeated Wallington (121) by nine wickets at Ocean Grove Memorial Recreation Reserve in their Round 7 clash.
Showdown result dampened as bad weather rolls in By Mark Heenan Ben Ricardo believes the Cobras top bowlers pitted against Drysdale’s gun bats would be exciting viewing for a Bellarine A Grade cricket competition. The mouth-watering Hawks and Cobras top four showdown never eventuated on day two on Saturday after rain forced the cancellation of the Round 5 clash at Drysdale Recreation Reserve. “Obviously our strength is our bowling, their (Drysdale) batting is very strong and I think they have got a couple of players to come into that side,” Ricardo told the Voice. Ironically play between Collendina and Drysdale had been abandoned on day two of their home and away fixtures for the last three years running due to weather. “I spoke to Drysdale’s Jason Malcolm about that ... he goes ‘Next year we might have to organise a one dayer if it is fine on the first day’,” he said. “It is not good after that usually it rains or we get heated off.” Ricardo was brilliant on day one against the Hawks after he scored 129. Collendina built an imposing first day total to finish at 8/307 from 75 oversr. Ricardo’s batting statistics across the last four seasons are incredible. He has amassed more than 1300 A Grade runs. In the last four seasons Ricardo, 32, an Collendina A Grade player since he was a teenager, has racked up nine half-centuries including two scores in the 90s and three hundreds. “At my age I try and play a bit like a veteran - these days I put a bit more value on my wicket,” Ricardo said. “When I was younger I was a bit blase and played my shots a bit earlier than I should have.” Fellow Collendina batsmen Nathan Walter (20), star teenage wicket-keeper Max Sutton (22) and Richie Peters (20) provided good support to Ricardo. Earlier on day one, Cobra openers Kade Norquay (46) and Corey Walter (41) shared in a 80-run first wicket partnership stand. oceangrovevoice.com.au

Season to suit Grubbers By Justin Flynn Ocean Grove Football Netball Club president Tony Potter has welcomed the 2018 Bellarine Football League fixture. The Grubbers will continue their recent tradition by hosting Newcomb Power under lights at Ray Menzies Oval in round four on 21 April, starting at 7.10pm. “We asked for, and got, the Easter game and a night game against Newcomb on Anzac weekend. As the BFL gets stronger, all games will be challenging and the club is looking forward to challenging itself from the very start.” The Grubbers open the season on 31 March with a home clash against Portarlington before travelling to Geelong Amateur in round two.
